Hey all.
Well, things are pretty slow. And it’s looking more and more like no season, given what is going on MLB today.
If you have anything interesting worth discussing have at it.
Hey all.
Well, things are pretty slow. And it’s looking more and more like no season, given what is going on MLB today.

All others following are #2 or lower….
…But I FEEL like I’m #1, and surely that counts for something . . . ?
Angry, I’ll email you soon about the wild mushroom seasons out where you live, which will be coming with the “monsoons,” in case you might be interested in a supplemnt to gardening.
Don’t worry… we all get a trophy these days… we are all number 1.
Seen reports of people already finding chanterelles in the coast mountains. Been a wet spring in northwestern Oregon. I always keep an eye out when biking. Found some queen boletes last year on the McKenzie River Trail… was shocked no one else had raided them first.
Some people on the Central Oregon Mushroom Club page had found chanterelles in June while out looking for morels and spring boletes–a strange year. I’ve found them in the Coast Range in July, when there’s rain–actually a different strain, smaller, firmer, tending more to be in groups–and tastier, in my opinion, a reward for battling the spiderwebby woods that time of year–lot of swearing involved when finding those. The July Coast Range chanties are more like the variety you find in summer in the Rockies.
I’ve never found the queens, I envy you.
Angry, you asked a thread or two back about how people were drinking more (or less) given the situation. Strangely enough (or not), my wife and I cut our wine at dinner consumption in half. We find we’re not missing the larger amount as much as I thought we wood. The secret seems to be smaller glasses. Just like smaller portions of whatever you want to eat works to lose weight. We got out the smaller glasses, take sips not gulps, and are generally quite satisfied at the end of the meal. (Mind you, there are times I’d like to have the whole half bottle for myself, but not often)
Edit: make that “would”
PS: Saves money too.
Nice work.
I’ve been doing much better, too. Ironically, as depression kicked in, I drank less. I like to drink when happy/in a good mood. I only drank 1 day, having 2 drinks each time, the past two weeks. It’s way down.
The depression is getting better now that there’s more socializing on the horizon for me. That was brutal. I’m not super social, but I like the option to see good people if/when in the mood, and that’s been missing. Hopefully that doesn’t equate to more drinking. It’s weird but in the mountains I feel like the buzz is not as good, so I should stop for that reason alone.
Good job losing weight. Been trying to do the same myself. I’m within 5-10lbs of ideal BMI now.
Not trying to be flip, but why are so many professional athletes testing positive? I’m guessing they’re not putting on a mask and heading right back to their room after a game or practice?
It’s probably because they have larger than average social circles.
But I think the rate of positives is very low compared to the nation. And they get all the publicity when a positive result comes back.
Ladies of the night…

“Guys, I go there for the wings!!”
From the Washington Post, “ESPN reported that Williams told NBA security that no entertainers were present during his visit to the club… “Ask any of my teammates what’s my favorite restaurant in Atlanta is,” Lou Williams tweeted Friday. “Ain’t nobody partying. Chill out lol. “
Of course, that’s the same WaPo which, along with CNN, just settled a $250 mill defamation suit brought by the kid in the MAGA hat who they said was harassing an innocent old Native American. Turns out film of the entire incident shows the kid was on the receiving end of the harassment.
They settled for the same or less than what they’d have to cough up to pay lawyers through the process. Basically the maga poster boy lost his case.
“Catfish nuggets” are a thing?
Yup, and farm raised as well!
Oh shit. As I was saying…
So I just read where the Minnesota Vikings COVID infection control officer tested positive? All is lost!

From the prior thread…still waiting on an answer.
Where’s that guy who was mocking me (“shiny rock”, yada yada) for telling people to buy gold at 1250?
Another critic who left with their tail between their legs…
Wasn’t it angry@angry? I doubt he would be interested lol
No, it was that guy who kept saying it was a tin foil hat shiny rock…I think his name was “takemetoyourleader” or something like that.
Maybe he got taken away by a UFO

Headed to Wallowa Lake. Anybody been to the area recently? Looking for ideas of things to do with the kids. Last time I went i was about 10. Been a while, but I remember liking the tram ride up the mountain.
I was up there recently. Still a lot of fun; swimming in the lake, hike opportunities, those pedal/paddle boats, go karts, mini-golf, the tram. Very kid friendly. Some of the activities were a bit disconcerting to me when I was there, so many people, most without masks, thinking about the go karts with the seat belts and all the surfaces that SHOULD be cleaned between rides but are not….
If you have not been there in a while you may not recognize Joseph main street on the way. Lots of nice bronze work, and a very “walkable” – and walked – downtown. There’s lots of restaurants and even clothing shops, a gourmet chocolate shop that makes chocolates on site, I think they’re open 7 days a week; serving “Stumptown” coffee from Portland. While its nice to see restaurant options, I can see Joseph reaching that tipping point where the tourists begin to detract from the original draw. I think its a tough dynamic for any rural community to manage; you have a beautiful place, want jobs, want to attract people, how do they not love it to death and take away from the original attraction? My favorite place is the Joseph Fly Shoppe.
There is a pizza place on main street in Joseph that is very good, and very good about COVID adaptation, outdoor seating, spacing, employees wearing masks.
Enterprise has some places to eat that are still more local, and have great service and very good food. Terminal Gravity has some good beers, a nice atmosphere, but may be crowded. Food is just ok. Beer, sitting outside is the real draw there.
Used to frequent Enterprise and Joseph for work a few years ago and I second the pizza place on main street. They make their pizzas in a old school wood fire oven. Definitely the best pizza in eastern Oregon.
You guys are making me hungry.
You speak of a tourist tipping point. Thats exactly what happend to Sisters and Cannon Beach, two places I frequented as a youth. Its super sad to remember when they were just little one horse towns.
Don’t know about Cannon Beach, but you are spot on re: Sisters.
Remember, fondly, when it was not much more than the bakery and a small store.
I thought Joseph was pretty much a Sisters that didn’t suck… awesome little town. The guy that runs the marina at the lake is an OSU guy… though I don’t think he graduated… lol
Wife and i were up there couple of years back. Thumbs up for Terminal Gravity. Had a great lunch with an excellent couple beers.
I looked up pizza in Joseph, and of course they have 2 on Main Street, about a block from each other. Was it Embers or Gold Room that you liked? (And why do Joseph pizzarias use strip club names?)
Thanks for all of the info. Looking forward to getting out there. Sounds like we’ll be getting some serious thunderstorms one of the days, which actually sounds kindof fun
The Gold room The one with the wood fired pizza.
How do YOU know what names strip clubs use?!?
I live in Portland, where strip clubs and weed dispenseries are more common than churches.
You’ll love the pizza in the Gold Room. I hear the pie is even better in the VIP lounge in the back though…
NiceBeaver goes there for the wings!!

Last chance U final season on Netflix. One of the featured players is Rezjohn Wright.
Nice.
Is the coach insufferable and all about them again? Stopped watching at season 3 for that reason.
Not so far. Only on episode one. Much less dramatic than last few seasons and he jokes around with the players rather than degrading them. Shows his bro too and mentions the beavs several times.
Watched episode 1 just now. Havent watched past season so I can’t compare, but I really enjoyed the show. That WR Dior Walker-Scott is a guy to pull for, some other interesting guys on the team too. Coach Beam seems like a good dude who cares about the team and his job. Rezjohn so far seems like all talk and hasn’t looked very impressive in the 1 game they showed. Hope that’s just being played up for dramatic effect.
Thanks for the reminder. It’s cool to see Nahshon’s and Rejzohn’s relationship being featured along with Oregon State.
The Nationals players voted not to travel to Florida.
How is MLB not cancelled yet? Manfred is a disaster.
So who gets the W for the series? Anybody, or do they have a make-up window towards the end of the season to play missed games?
I don’t know of any make up date. The only games I know that will be made up are like the Indians/White Sox last night where it got rained out, they are playing each other today, so they’re doing a double header. The season has to end by Sept 27th. I don’t see how they’re going to make up all these Corona cancelled games given they already have a compressed schedule with fewer off days (6 total). There are more tie breakers, so they will probably institute those to find a “winner” for these games…ugh. Disaster.
They’ll have to move to neutral site games is my guess.
This issue overshadows the earlier disputes over money. Players should end up with much more leverage in the spring to negotiate the cba. The covid issue is on the owners by deciding to play in home cities and choosing not to play in some kind of controlled environment.
Could’ve played a single division at one or two sites but the owners bet on greed. They bet they might be able to get fans in their own stadium at some point.
Maybe mow down some cornfields in the midwest…
Goss Satdium at Coleman Field?
Ohio State has announced to fans how they plan to handle home games this year.
20% capacity will be allowed to attend in person(still bigger than a Gary Andersen era home game for Oregon State)
No tailgating, no pre-game pep rally, masks and social distancing required at the stadium.
https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/29553289
I’d be more interested to read how they plan to handle lawsuits when students get it from football players traveling around the country.
a GoFundMe legal campaign from alumni who live vicariously through a bunch of 20 years olds?
They’ll probably get season ticket and/or seating preference for contributing….
I doubt those kinds of lawsuits stand up in court. Don’t see how a community transmitted virus is a schools liability.
That seems a bit of a stretch, even for these times.
Make them sign waivers and go at their own risk. I’m all about selective reduction at this point. Overpopulation is a problem that needs to be addressed somehow lol
A good lawyer could definitely argue they were compelled. I doubt they keep scholarships if they refuse to sign.
I wasn’t referring to players. That’s a whole different question and I definitely feel they deserve protection (from scholarship loss, etc…)
Comment was for fans who choose to attend the games.
Ohhhhhh! Yeah that makes way more sense!
I wasn’t talking about fans, but students on campus with these guys…
Getting it in the classroom, etc. Def will be lawsuits.
Sorry to burst your bubble, but no lawsuit of this sort will stand up in court. People will try but no one will be successful.
I could see employees suing employers successfully but not students vs universities.
Didn’t you also say we’d definitely have a Fall season…?
No tailgating… good luck with that

That was awesome!
Yes, sisters was a quaint town to drive through back in the early 70s. Now it’s a sprawling arts-based tourist trap, that takes over 30 min
to just drive through the town’s main drag, from the HS to the ranger station. Redmond was a cowboy town. Now it’s almost completely
connected to the N. side of bend. Bend itself back then was still a ski bum’s destination. Get a little job waiting tables, washing dishes, save your $ for the winter season while getting by in a 1 brm. apt. for $ 70 p/mth. John Denverville, people dressed like backbackers without the pack: down vest, hiking boots
and plaid shirts. What a place it was.
Born and raised in Redmond, it was NEVER a “cowboy town”
Never, at least not going back to the 1980’s.
No matter how much you want to believe that and if it takes you 30 minutes to get through Sisters you need to learn to take other roads, never takes more than 5 minutes if you are a local and know which roads to take.
and just to be clear, Redmond is a total shit hole that I wouldn’t live in if the rent was $0, but it wasn’t a cowboy town. Redmond was more of a buttrock/tweaker town.
Seriously, turn right at the gas station guys!
Prineville was a hard working, hard playing town of loggers and cowboys. Longhairs were harassed and sometimes driven out of town.
There were no less than 6 full time mills going. A good dozen lively drinking establishments, crook county roundup was a huge deal,
and only 60 yrs. or so prior to that they used to hang horse thieves from the wooden tressel bridge that crossed the crooked river on
the town’s west end. Deer hunters would pour into that country from the west side. From certain high points you could see a steady stream
of trucks, trailers and campers at night several days before opening morning. Like a slow moving stream of silver lava coming from afar.
I love Prineville.
Since it seems unlikely we’ll have a football season this fall, and with that discussion about Smith’s 4th down decisions, I thought I might return to an old favorite–
In today’s WSJ, one Jame Metzl, billed as a former State Department staffer during the Clinton administration and a WHO advisory committee member, addresses a topic I introduced to this forum last February–the origin of Corona. Here’s a digest:
” . . . evidence grows that the deadly Covid-19 pandemic may stem from a Wuhan virology lab’s accidental leak.”
“The closest known relative to SARS-CoV-2″ [the novel corona virus] is a virus sampled by Chinese researchers from six miners infected while working in a bat-infested cave in southern China in 2012. These miners developed symptoms we now associate with Covid-19. Half of them died. These viral samples were then taken to the Wuhan Institute of Virology–the only facility in China that’s a bio-safety Level 4 laboratory. . . . Wuhan is more than 1,000 miles north of Yunan province, where the cave is located. If the virus jumped to humans through a series of human-animal encounters in the wild or in wet markets, as Beijing claimed, we would likely have seen evidence of people being infected in China before the Wuhan outbreak. We have not.”
“The alternative explanation, a lab escape, is far more plausible. We know the Wuhan Institute of Virology was using controversial ‘gain of function’ techniques to make viruses more virulent for research purposes.” [My source indicated that the Chinese were not only developing their own but stealing it from others, such as Canada.]
Metzl continues: “Suggesting that an outbreak of a deadly bat coronavirus coincidentally occurred near the only level 4 virology institute in all of China–which happened to be studying the closest known relative of that exact virus–strains credulity.” He goes on to describe how Beijing “suppressed essential information and prevented WHO investigators from entering the country while samples were destroyed,” and the silencing of Chinese biologists and the disappearance of journalists.
Wrapping up, Metzl muses over “why so many people outside China are stepping so gingerly” around the obvious, offering “China’s outsize global influence” and the sourcing of “critical medical supplies.” He also offers that “Many progressives are also seem to be censoring themselves” [for reasons as readily conceived as expressed.]
Still no BG? :(
No – worrisome.
It looks like my fear Trump won’t leave is becoming true as well. Today he says we should delay the election until it’s safe….
Tweeted 30 minutes before the economics report was released. Shocking coincidence.
MAGA
Next up….declatation of Martial Law.
https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2020/09/china-ai-surveillance/614197/.
“Xi’s pronouncements on AI have a sinister edge. Artificial intelligence has applications in nearly every human domain, from the instant translation of spoken language to early viral-outbreak detection. But Xi also wants to use AI’s awesome analytical powers to push China to the cutting edge of surveillance. He wants to build an all-seeing digital system of social control, patrolled by precog algorithms that identify potential dissenters in real time.”
“Uighurs who were spared the camps now make up the most intensely surveilled population on Earth. Not all of the surveillance is digital. The Chinese government has moved thousands of Han Chinese “big brothers and sisters” into homes in Xinjiang’s ancient Silk Road cities, to monitor Uighurs’ forced assimilation to mainstream Chinese culture. They eat meals with the family, and some “big brothers” sleep in the same bed as the wives of detained Uighur men.
Meanwhile, AI-powered sensors lurk everywhere, including in Uighurs’ purses and pants pockets. According to the anthropologist Darren Byler, some Uighurs buried their mobile phones containing Islamic materials, or even froze their data cards into dumplings for safekeeping, when Xi’s campaign of cultural erasure reached full tilt. But police have since forced them to install nanny apps on their new phones. The apps use algorithms to hunt for “ideological viruses” day and night. They can scan chat logs for Quran verses, and look for Arabic script in memes and other image files.”
Herman Cain dead of corona.
Didn’t he recently say people are fed up with masks? I thought he once was part of the hoax camp, too, but I’m not sure.
Yes he was. He was hospitalized 10 days after he attended the Tulsa rally.
I keep visualizing Canzano’s office with Larry Scott stuffed and mounted on the wall. Not sure if this is a bigger indictment of Scott using six-figure consultants to come up with the idea or the LA Times. Would have made more sense to roll all of that money into a comprehensive sports website with contributions from the league’s SIDs, interns and perhaps a national name or two looking for safe landing spot. I know more than few Pac-12 writers who would be great in the role.
https://www.oregonlive.com/sports/john_canzano/2020/07/canzano-amid-crisis-pac-12-signed-agreement-to-fund-news-coverage-from-los-angeles-times.html
Greed, love of money, and power have taken control of college sports… the only difference between the conferences is the PAC-12 doesn’t do good business like the other mob families.
As I understand it, the university presidents have control over this operation?
That’s the way I get it as well.
One question is, What will F.King bring to the table?
Canzano mentioned in an earlier story that almost all of the college presidents who hired Scott are now retired or doing other things. So few are personally invested in Scott’s success. Scott’s had a 10-year run, which is decent for a well-regarded commissioner. My guess is that he holds on to see the conference through pandemic and a “normal season” then announces he is stepping down.
And just to be clear – I don’t count Scott as a “well-regarded commissioner.”
‘through pandemic and a “normal season” then announces he is stepping down.’ Too dubious and possibly too long.
Yes, and it’s worth noting that Dr. Ray, a big Scott supporter, is now replaced by a guy who has seen the SEC operation up close. Real question is whether or not F.King will step up to the opportunity here.
Potential o lineman recruit Many I’ve league offers so fits the criteria of an under the radar guy for smith.

I would have thought after the pre-Rueck wbb troubles – the AD would have installed some system for players to report abuse. Roster turnover is always a huge red flag for a program. And it isn’t like the vb team’s “success” justifies the treatment.
Get that coach out of there. Don’t care about wins and losses. Don’t need that treatment for players.
Pretty heavy accusations. Sounds like a coach losing control of his team. Season going bad, coach pushes team way too hard and doesn’t get the results.
From my experience, these types of choices don’t work very often. Only result is it unites the team in hating the coach. It’s a trauma bond, not a team bond.
He had one good season and failed to build on it. Didn’t get the players or establish an atmosphere to keep it going. That’s all on the coach.
fire him
You don’t see it as much in the non-revenue sports, but I’ve always felt that those “Farewell Beaver Nation” tweets from players leaving the program, thanking the coaches and teammates etc. are dubious at best. We’ve seen a dozen or so out of the men’s hoop squad since Tinkle came aboard, a lot more than Robinson had.
A few months back I questioned whether Ionescu’s game would translate to the WNBA – I was a damn fool. 33-7 and 7 is a hell of a line wherever you play.
https://thespun.com/nba/golden-state-warriors/steph-curry-reacts-to-sabrina-ionescus-2nd-wnba-game
I don’t really follow the WNBA but it seems like you don’t really ever get the college stars that flame out in the pros like is common in the NBA
You don’t – but what I saw of Ionescu in college was that she was very effective in creating mismatches to her benefit and cleaned up a lot of rebounds etc. which I wondered if she would be able to do as well in the WNBA where the rebounding is better and fewer obvious mismatches.
Angry, whats your thoughts on this? I could see it going to $2500 maybe, but this seems to be more speculation to drive demand like they have been doing to robinhood traders the last 3 months.
https://www.cnbc.com/2020/07/28/gold-prices-could-hit-3500-in-two-years-analyst-says.html
My thought is the dollar is toast, so anything is possible. To back all dollars would be 25k gold as of today, but figure they will never do that. Say we have to back 1/4th – that puts us around 6.25k. I think a 1/4th backing is the most likely scenario, so in that sense gold is still super cheap. Depending how bad things get, we might have to do a 50% backing, which puts it at 12k. You also have to keep in mind supply might dwindle as other Countries’ citizens buy gold to protect themselves from those currencies (it’s not just the dollar that’s toast – it is all of them), so a demand shortage could put a huge premium over that 6.25k number. For that reason you can get a price much much higher than anything that supports M2 or any other money supply measurement.
I expect this all to play out over the next ten years, so it’s not something I expect any time soon. For me the next target and timeline is 2.5k by next June. If the government continues to hand out enormous checks that timeline moves forward as does price.
I’m not buying gold here, and glad I got mine long ago. I will be looking to buy gold miners on any significant dip.
Your point they’re trying to goad in Robinhooders could be true, but in general CNBC hates gold, and they don’t want people in it.
We just saw why AMZN has been my highest conviction stock for several years.
Hope some of you guys banked off my list from March.
Something that I found to be interesting:
Guest Post by The Zman
Last week, the Wisconsin athletic director sent out a letter to supporters that the university would lose 60-70 million dollars this year due to the reduction in football games being played in the fall. If the season is cancelled, the losses will top 100 million just for the fall. That may be an exaggeration, but there is no question that a cancellation of the college football season will cost the big-time college programs tens of millions in revenue. It is a billion-dollar industry.
ZeroHedge pointed out that ESPN has a billion dollars in ad space to sell for this fall’s college football season. They also have ad space for other sports as well, but college football is the prime mover of ad space. It is unlikely that ad buyers will want to buy ads when ESPN is running replays of card games this fall. ESPN’s primary income stream is mandatory cable fees, they net close to nine billion in fees every year, but a billion dollars in ad revenue still counts for something.
Of course, everyone knows no one is watching ESPN at the moment, but that has no impact on the cable fees. The way it works is a service like Hulu of Comcast pays ESPN nine dollars per month for each subscriber to their service. These deals are not contingent on viewership. As ZeroHedge points out, the language in these deals does not require the content provider to deliver particular content. As long as ESPN is beaming something, they get paid for it.
Even so, the mass disruption of sports is going to have an impact on the economic model of professional sports. Out of work people will begin to look at that cable bill and wonder if it makes sense. Cable providers will begin to look for ways to get out from under their ESPN deal. For its part, ESPN will not be paying the leagues for content when the leagues are shutdown. Like the economy as a whole, professional sport is about to experience an unprecedented jolt.
Way back when the lock downs were on the table, the sober minded warned that you can’t lock everyone in their homes and not have consequences. The modern economy is a highly complicated balancing act that has evolved to produce increasingly efficiency, along with the retail excess. Even small disruptions can upset the balance within supply chains resulting in unexpected outcomes. Start turning off large bits of it and before long the whole thing starts to crash.
The first glimpse of this may be what is happening with sports. Major League Baseball is the first to re-open, but it is quickly becoming a disaster. The empty parks make the television product less than compelling and now games are being cancelled as players test positive for the virus. The NBA is struggling to keeps its knuckleheads inside the compound where they plan to play their games. The NFL is seeing droves of players sit out the upcoming season for fear of the virus.
The thing no one dares mention is the impact this lock down is having on interest in spectator sports. Being a sports fan is like being a smoker. Part of the dependency is the ritual and structure of it. The smoker takes a break every hour to smoke, collect his thoughts and get the nicotine hit. The football fan has their weekend in the fall, where they have scheduled social activities around games. Like the smoker, the sports fan builds their life around the habit.
People who quit a vice like smoking or drinking note that they also quit the social scene that goes with it. They lose touch with Sally from accounting who they used to take smoke breaks with every day. The people at the bar are no longer a part of their life. That’s what will happen with sports. Those weekends in the fall will be filled with other things and after the withdrawal pains subside, the habit will be lost. People who cut cable know this experience. In time, you don’t miss it.
I stopped at zerohedge. Sorry, but you won’t be taken seriously ever using that shit page as a reference.
So you made a judgement without reading the content.
Yes. Just giving you feedback as to whether you want to be taken seriously.
From Nemec
“Oregon State, once a leader in Gregg’s recruitment, has fallen in recent months due to a sudden lack of communication.
“They were my leader, but I think after this high school season… I had a pretty good year and some other schools saw me and watched a lot of film on me,” Gregg explained. ” A lot of schools are recruiting me more than they were before the season. I just think (Oregon State) thought I was already locked in with them and they thought they had me and could kind of stop talking to me. It’s kind of weird. They’ve said I’m the top guy on their board and I know they want me bad, but they haven’t really been showing it as much anymore.””
Seriously? If our coaches are not trying hard to recruit 4/5 star kids from our own state, that’s malfeasance.
It’s a two way street. Coaches would not stop recruiting if they still thought they had a shot at him. Sounds like an opening though.
Did you read the quote? “They were my leader”. Obviously the Beavs had a shot.
Who is Gregg?
Ryann Gregg, daughter of Corvallis local and former MLBer Kevin Gregg. She was a big name in state, All-State, big hitter and well recruited. She ended up as a Pilot. I thought that was strange. Another local from the same class at CHS, Nevaeh Bray, had committed to OSU then she ended up at Portland too. I asked my daughter who is friends with both of them but she didn’t know what the situation was.
Oops, reading that I thought it was related to the VBall hooppla. Derp.
Wonder why Gonzaga didn’t even offer him? That was also an odd but of info.
Wonder if there is any relation to Kevin Gregg? Tinkle seems we’ll liked around town and seems like a genuinely good dude but you got to actually be good at your job to keep it IMO… sorry for stating the obvious.
Apparently Pat Bailey isn’t getting his contract renewed. Gipson will take his place.
(From Beaverblitz): Canham’s cursory statement about Pat Bailey. And, Gipson’s ability “to design and implement high quality systems.” And, (paraphrase) ‘letting him (a player) think about it for a while’ after a misplay. Hmm
Figured Bailey was there to help with the transition more than anything this year. Season being toast probably confirms that – as well as Gipson perhaps having more tread on the tire. Honestly, being a volunteer assistant at a top school like OSU has to be ridiculous. Maybe an alum hooks you up with a sweetheart gig where you clear high five figures while focusing on baseball, but still.
A few questions:
-Who will take Gipson’s volunteer position?……..some speculate a “big name”, but is it more likely a veteran of a Casey team?
-What’s Bailey’s likely future?…….I doubt he needs the money, and he has a lot of wisdom to give. Maybe a private HS?
-Anyone heard comments on the move from former players?
-Why is the local beat reporter for the GT often caught flat footed while a national guy like Kendall Rogers gets the scoop?
-And, why, even after 24 hours, does the local “beat” reporter merely publish the announcement which was put out by the school?
Oh, and helmsley’s mention of “let him (a player) think about it for a while” after a misplay seems to have been a Canham trait from the get-go. It’ll take a year or more to see if it works.
Go Beavs
I’m uncertain as to what it is to ‘design and implement high quality systems’ in baseball. Is it something more than pitch, catch, field, hit the ball, slide, bunt, run, etc.?
I don’t know, maybe organizing training/practice routines?
Volunteer assistants are usually younger guys who are starting out. Paid via summer camps. I’d imagine someone from a more recent year vs canhams era.
Bailey is done unless he’s feeling like local high school ball or join a sports performance center.
This seemed like the plan all along. Bailey gets a final year and then retires. Seems like Canham kept him as a favor to Casey.
Canhams style is looking the opposite of the volleyball coach. Instead of pushing harder externally, he’s looking for the player to push internally first. It’s a new day, new styles of coaching.
Bailey always got a lot of credit (from Parker) for the positioning of outfieldsers. If true, isn’t that a function of knowing your own guys and having a “book” on the opposition? Doesn’t seem like that knowledge carries over much from season to season; so, no big loss in that area?
What do ya think IS the biggest area of concern with this change? Recruiting? Dugout atmosphere? Something else?
And I surely agree on your opinion of Canham vs the VB coach.
Yeah Bailey always positioned the outfielders. I saw him signal them nearly every at bat, he literally did have papers on him. Fun teaching people what his signals meant.
I would say the biggest change would be recruiting. Not in a good or bad way, just a change. It was a big age gap for Bailey to the current generation of players. And now that will be closer. On the otherside, Canhams staff will be younger than most parents for a bit, so the job there could be tougher. Bailey was seen as an experienced steady hand by parents.
“Bailey was seen as an experienced steady hand by parents.”
And a man of character who, like Rueck, makes no bones about his Christianity.

It’s interesting people think 2k to 3k is a big jump. It’s only 50%. I’ve seen bread go from $1.5 to $3 in a couple years. I’ve seen Tesla shoot up 500% in a few months. What’s 50% when they’re printing this much? It’s really nothing.
I closed my bank account earlier this year, and use bond ETFs for my cash reserves now. It’s riskier, but the FED is to blame for pushing people out on the curve. I’m just doing what I’m incentivized to do.

I was going with #2009 Traffic Orange until I compared to a couple Beavs hats; Pure Orange #2004 matches best (on my screen with my eyes). Your mileage may vary.
Thats what I was thinking. I even thought there might be a middle ground between those two colors thats perfect. And there actually is 5 more orange shades between them but I’m not getting crazy and ordering samples just for fun. Thanks for the help.

That’s on the league for the poor setup. Could’ve done a bubble…
NBA looking good to get through their season. NHL likely as well. WNBA too.
Are we all just kidding ourselves? Seems like the only thing working with sports is a bubble environment. MLB is a disaster because the players can’t follow safety protocols. Maybe the college football players can be protected, but they’re still traveling.
I’ve seen MLB players sitting on the bench with no masks breathing all over one another…
I know, even on opening day, I was watching and thinking WTF, where are the protocols? Either they don’t care or they can’t break their habits. I think some of the players are still partying after hours and that’s where they are contracting COVID. There was a story in one of the papers somewhere alluding to players not doing their part. I don’t see how the NFL will be any different?
FB SCHEDULE:
Seems to set up pretty well for Beavs; 3 of first 4 at home, bye EXACTLY at the halfway point, and catching ucks early with their new QB could be an advantage.
Who knows how many (if any) will be played, but aren’t the first ones the most likely?
Question, which game is the most likely to prevent a 4-0 start?
Isn’t it the luck of da Beavs that the game formerly known as the civil war will be played at home with no fans? Complaining aside, I just hope the game is actually played.

Recommendation, please. What, in your opinion (s) is the best streaming option for watching MLB this season, such as it is? I prefer watching it on an internet laptop, rather than phone or android device. I don’t plan to use the stream for anything else. Much like shopping, I zone out after looking at more than a couple of choices.
I have MLB.tv subscription (free for T-Mobile and Sprint cell phone users); $59.99 otherwise I think. I watch games on iPad and PC pretty easily. Could probably figure out how to get it on my TV if I ever wanted to.

Any of you guys have a good road bike recommendation? Thinking of getting a new one instead of tuning up the old one (16 years old now)…they want $200 to tune it up and fix some broken components, so not sure it’s worth it.
Max budget probably ~$1,500.
Strictly road, or a “gravel” bike? Touring? Racing? Or mainly a comfortable road bike?
Given your in Colorado, have you considered a mountain bike? I finally updated my very old mountain bike a few years ago. A full suspension bike is amazing; the descents you can make, and the climbs. My front shock has 6″ of travel and just eats up the rough stuff and even large rocks. I descended a washed out, rutted, forest service road that had large rock in it and I couldn’t believe the speeds I could acheive. Its a blast.
I’d like to get into Mt biking here at some point, but for my entire life I’ve been BMX (as a kid) and road (as an adult), so I just want to maybe replace this one. So strictly road for now. Do you guys think spending $200 for a tuneup and parts gets to the point where buying a new bike is the better option? Just seems a lot to repair this one (1/6th the cost of a good new bike just for a tune up seems stupid).
Always did my own wrenching, and haven’t been serious in years. Probably want new tires at least, which would run $70+. Is your old ride nice, got a good feel? I’d get fond of my old rides and have a hard time letting them go.
The tires are fine still.
I had a spring break on the gear shift thingy, so I’m stuck on the largest gear, making hills a nightmare. I have no clue how to fix bikes. I’d like to learn b/c it would make this easy. I’d just repair it. I just am not inclined with bikes at all.
Yeah I have nearly 8k miles on this bike and am fond of it, so that’s an issue.
Mmm. The shifter or front or rear derailleur in the drivetrain? Might be able to find an exact replacement on eBay or Craigslist, that would probably be easiest.
It’s a shimano part, but that’s about all I know. The spring in it failed on the big gear where you pedal. I’m so ignorant with bikes…lol
Took a look at my own bike… the front derailleur, which shifts the front gears on the crank where you pedal, has what appears to be a non-serviceable (riveted) return spring that would pull it down to the granny gear when the shift cable goes slack. If you took your bike in, the shop should be able to sell you a proper replacement front derailleur (there are many sizes and configurations). Getting the new one on and adjusted could be a little tricky. You’d need to get it positioned up/down and aligned with the chainrings on the crank to assure the chain doesn’t rub as you go thru the rear gears and there isn’t any interference with the moving parts. There are two stop screws which limit the low and high gear movement to prevent derailing. Finally, it must be snug enough not to get caught in the chain an rotated forward into the chainrings when pedaling.
Or you could juice like Lance and just mash the big ring all the time…
Or you could juice like Lance and just mash the big ring all the time…
Haha.
Been doing that all summer. Turning into a LB with these thighs…
I was going to get it fixed, then covid hit, and then I just got used to it. But now it’s getting old.
A schwinn stingray with the banana seat always served me well.
Angry,
Have you checked into any e-bikes as those are right in your price range.
I just bought two Schwinn 21 speed hybrid bikes normally around $500 per but got them for $430 each. Nice bikes if you want to do a combo road and light trails but it’s not a mountain bike.
why in the world would someone down vote my above comment. Schwinn makes a very nice bike although it’s not a high-end bike but it’s not a cheap one at $430 either. It’s a nice bike that is affordable and will do what it’s intended to do and do it very comfortably.
Spend the $200 and keep it as a spare and go ahead and buy the new one you’re actually lusting for? :-)
Haha. I’ve had this one forever, and it works, so that’s good enough for me. I really don’t lust after any objects (except guitars)…. :/
I’ll shop around for more quotes next week. If I can find someone to repair it more reasonably I’ll go that route. But I was just wondering if anyone here was a hardcore cyclist who knows good road bikes in that price range. I can ask reddit or something if it comes to that.
People like the lower priced Giant road bikes because the frames tend to be better quality than other brands at the same price.
Here’s an article on decent bikes at the more affordable end and they go through some of the differences in components, materials, etc.

I would check with renowned bicycle expert Mike Riley. Don’t forget a little basket in the front and one of those little bells you can activate with your thumb.

Funny someone above thinks this doesn’t lead to lawsuits. Going to be major lawsuits. Just look at the wording in that document.
They’re right that they shouldn’t be asked to play and risk their lives so idiots like Larry Scott can get rich. I’m not sure what the answer is, but probably some type of bubble where they aren’t on campus all year and the college buys them a top notch health plan.
I’m gonna assume the ncaa is going to allow an opt-out option that won’t count against their eligibility soon. They Lmost have to at this point.
Its starting to get real..wsu players that support movement have been asked to clean out lockers.
https://twitter.com/PeteThamel/status/1290048107837714433
Universities can just tell players they aren’t forced to play. They can choose to not play and still retain their scholarship. That’s how the Unis avoid having to give in to players’ extra demands and avoid lawsuits. If enough players opt out then there is no season. So essentially the players will determine if there is a season.

Back from 5 days at the Wallowas and almost zero cell service/wifi, both of which were great breaks from the day to day.
Anything noteworthy to catch up on regarding OSU athletics? I’m almost totally out of the loop.
Angry looking to buy or not buy a trail bike. That’s about it.
I think sports might be over in America.
Unless you consider my thunder thighs powering up hills in 3rd gear a sport.
“Unless you consider my thunder thighs powering up hills in 3rd gear a sport.”
I do not. I suspect the viewing public, and advertisers, do not.
I need to “mash the big ring” myself, try to grow my legs. I was improving my mountain bike climbs March – April quite a bit, but have ridden much lately….
But seriously, you think they’re over? Major sports have survived world wars and depressions before. I think they’ll be back, but their longer life may change in terms of which sports stay relevant and are watched by younger people.
Hey NiceBeaver, how was the trip? Its still a great part of the state isn’t it? Did you try the Gold Room?
Maybe not over, but people have realized they can get on with life without sports. The longer this goes on, the harder it is to pull them back in. On the margins of course.
Hey Objcritic, trip was great. We fit quite a bit into our 5 days. Took the gondola up to the top of Mt Howard for some hiking.(they say they’re sanitizing each gondola between users on their website, but didnt see that happening at all, just a heads up to others considering this excursion)
Rented a boat at the marina for about 5 hours on the hottest day of the year. Worked out well as we tied up to one of the private docks and just floated on inner tubes and had lunch out there. Kids drove the boat a little, which they loved.
Drove up to Hat Point the next day and hiked some more. Fit in 2 mini golf games between activities. BBQd at the cabin most nights. Swam in the lake at dusk most nights. It was a pretty full week.
Only downer was yesterday we were hiking around hurrican creek and i was crossing the creek on some rocks and I hit a slippery rock. Completely lost my feet and fell back into the water and hit the back of my head on a large rock. Was a little worried for a period that I was going to end up concussed, but didnt show any signs. Just shaken up by the fall and soaking wet. On the plus side, it caused us to take our tine leaving town, so we decided to get pizza at the Gold Room for lunch. It was great, thanks for the recommendation.
Today, back to work, with a really stiff back/neck. Back to reality blows.
Also, Joesph and Wallowa Lake areas were busy, but didnt ever feel overrun with people. Not much mask wearing going on around the area, except shoppers in Joseph. Its easy enough to stay distant from people though.
The marina guys were great. Gave me a “GoBeavs” every time they saw me and they all seemed like pretty good dudes.
Glad you passed concussion protocol and got back out there.
That pizza may be my favorite now. I love the “Jersey Pie” at Double Mountain in Hood River (speaking of overrun….), and they also do the 700 degree oven thing….but that Gold Room pizza has a better red sauce.
Also glad to hear it wasn’t overrun. As I said, I think its approaching that point. My understanding is that two years ago was the first season all camp sites at the end of the lake were booked every weekend of the season.
Totally agree. I live within walking distance of the Double Mtn in Portland so we eat there pretty frequently. Jersey Pie is my go-to also.
The only other local comporable pizza(style and quality) I’ve found is Gladstone Pizza in SE PDX. Highly recommend it if you’re ever in the area. They’re still pretty under the radar, for whatever reason.
Funny thing I noticed with the state park campgrounds this Summer. Almost all of them have their playgrounds closed due to Covod concerns. But at Wallowa Lake, that playground was swarming with kids and adults, and not a mask in sight. Not sure how 1 staye park campground is so different from the rest I’ve seen.
We also passed that Lighthouse Pentacostal church in Island City that was responsible for the big Covid outbreak in June. Looked pretty closed yesterday.
Some 250 members of the church tested positive as of June, in a town of about 1000 people total, because they didnt shut down service during April/May. Would suspect that area has already reched herd immunity. We decided not to stop for gas in that town, to be safe.
There’s a lot of people in rural eastern Oregon that seem to be ignoring the notion of masks. A friend of mine was in a hardware store recently getting supplies for home improvement projects, was one of the few, if not only people wearing masks, and he was laughed at by other customers for doing so.
There’s also been outbreaks in Malheur county which puts them in the dark red on the map.
Nicebeav: We tried to grab Gladstone the other day and they’ve chosen not to reopen and their answering machine says they may never open again…. Bummer.
And It’s pretty crazy how politically polarizing the mask thing is. Scientifically it’s very simple but has turned into: “you liberal pussies are ruled by fear” and “you’re not tredding on my rights!”. Making decisions out of spite instead of what’s right…..
One of my best friends (and about the biggest Beav out there) moved to Germany for a masters degree about 4 years ago (funny cooincidence on timing.) He said it’s mind blowing how selfish US citizens appear after living overseas and gaining new perspectives. The majority of people in his new circles have a much higher concern on their list of proorities for the greater good then the me me me thing we have going on over here. That’s not just a statement on masks: but most facets of society. Not saying I’m ready to pack up and roll out as they have their own issues and we have great things too, but the amount of narcism we have here is not going to lead to a better future.
I know as Americans we weren’t always like this, but it’s going to take some sort of catastrophic shift to get back….. Personally I think we need to break up as a country into several smaller ones (or some sort of territory system) at this point as we’re too far apart on too many things. Let the Deep South have there anti-abortion, gun toting, religion over science policies and let’s see where it goes. On the west coast we can have our pot, give out free health care, and change the way we police and see where that gets us. This isn’t a statement on right or left so don’t go sideways MAGA folk. Just a general honest look at American society these days and how too many want to make national law for everyone according to their own personal beliefs.
Really hope we can come together and change as a country, but what do they say: hope springs eternal. In that spirit Go Beavs lol!
That’s sad to hear about Gladstone. Was one of our favorite places. I like the adjoining bar too, St Pizza Lounge, which will probably go with it.
Was definitely tempting to turn east on I-84 instead of west when we got to LaGrande today. I’m thinking about getting an RV and letting my daughter distance learn from some real distance this fall since schools in Portland are going full-time virtual. Might as well make the most of this time and see some more of the country.
NB that’s an awesome idea.
We’ve got the option of half time or full time distance. I’m still on the fence.

It’s going to be a piece meal approach for sure. Not every conference is going to do the same thing. I would guess the sec will just push through until someone dies.
Historical perspective with direct correlations. College football has been through this before.
https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/29565241/football-historians-talk-game-previous-pandemic
I would honestly say, if the playoffs and bowl games were cancelled, teams should play every other week. Have two weeks between games to test and isolate players. Outbreaks could be contained faster, players testing positive would likely miss only one game.
Just a thought:
What if all teams began immediately issuing HCQ+zinc as a preventative measure and let the college landscape prove HCQ+zinc efficacy (or lack of) on a visible scale for the public to observe? Those who are pro-HCQ say it is the best preventative, so prove it. At least it is a proven and safe drug since the 1950s and can be administered by the team physicians as well. If it worked and college football was back, I’d be happy about it. If it didn’t work, oh well, the athletes are ready for malaria when they travel.
It’s not the best drug for a healthy person to be on. There is no conclusions that it works to mitigate or stop infections.
Zinc is a good idea though.

Oops. Looks like I’ve waded into YO territory. I don’t fantasize about changing your mind, or really arguing for that matter. The heritage foundation is linked to the Koch’s et al. Koch’s have a major interest in fossil fuel revenue. Remember when crude futures went negative? US energy use hit a thirty year low around then. Any red herrings (hcq) that give the general public a false sense of security enables them to return to business as usual, like traveling (using oil).

I dont have strong feelings one way or the other about the drug. But this guy was tweeting support for it while on death’s door(or his ghost writer was) which doesn’t give me a ton of confidence in it.
https://twitter.com/THEHermanCain/status/1278977542808977409?s=20
Shes not saying how many studies and papers show the opposite. Just do a Google scholar search for Hydroxichlorquine and covid and you will see that the top
20 most cited papers are roughly evenly split between good, bad, no effect. Even the conglomerate results of know studies are like that. So yeah when there’s no real consensus then the evidence isn’t currently easy to evaluate.
Most the stuff I see lately in favor is to put people who are put in the ICU on Hydroxichlorquine as part of a combination treatment. I see almost no support for it to be used as a ptreventative measure for healthy people.
Here is one you’ve probably already seen, seems pretty even handed to me and concludes:
Hydroxychloroquine is dominating the news again for many reasons, not the least of which is that results from several important studies recently have been released. But the angst, the controversy, and cynical politicking around the drug is completely unwarranted.
We don’t know for certain if, and in what manner, hydroxychloroquine works. We should trust clinicians to review the data for themselves, and it would behoove the media, the politicians, and the public to let the science play out.
https://www.dailysignal.com/2020/08/01/hydroxychloroquine-covid-19/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=hydroxychloroquine-covid-19?utm_source=TDS_Email&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=MorningBell&mkt_tok=eyJpIjoiTm1VeE9XUTFNakU0TW1NMSIsInQiOiI1a3poVGJqaTlRSXA2KzBWeEVWSktqekxiemd4YnA3WmFLMDdZWnZjWkJvWWJ5SmxYTEhSK2g5dklrWXhjMTRJMElBU0RsZElxVkI2a21DT2NSRzhxZkU5M0dMSGxZZCswV2VFN1laR09sbFdaYnhuSHRqWmxPd3hKSU1PXC93QWcifQ==
Nothing to argue with there. Enabling experts to gather and evaluate data is how science and advancement works.
…Enabling experts to gather and evaluate data is how science and advancement works.
Yup, but hard for the general population to understand due, primarily, to 24hr media with conflicting political agendas and little hesitancy to twist information.
Better idea,
Have all the MLB players entered into the vaccine testing. Not in a bubble, guys traveling at least once every two weeks. Clearly not following the rules. Perfect test subjects.
May save baseball’s season.
Someone on HCQ needs to be monitored for a lengthening of the QT interval as this is a side effect of the drug. Some people are prone to a condition where the heart’s electrical cycle is elongated and they get into a situation where the heart is trying to electrically discharge while it’s trying to charge back up. The result is a dangerous EKG diagnosis called “torsades de pointes” (or multimorphic ventricular tachycardia). Their heart his being chaotically and not in an efficient matter. This often degrades into ventricular fibrillation (VFIB) where the heart is just kind of vibrating and not pumping at all. CPR or a defib is now necessary,
So in a nutshell, HCQ will kill otherwise healthy people when administered prophylactically to large groups without medical oversight.
..without medical oversight. ??

https://youtu.be/zaaTZkqsaxY
Lol. And ol joltin Joe is still waiting to find out who he picked as his VP.
Quality post as usual. This had nothing to do with Biden. Try actually watching it and giving an informed opinion.
You can watch a dozen Trump interviews and come away wondering what did he mean? Trump is no smooth talker. Pretty established that he rambles and says off the cuff things that makes people cring. Myself included. There is your “informed” opinion. As for the post, i made it about Biden also because it was my reply. You want to bash Trump? Have at it. Until told differently, I intend to have a say about Biden.
That’s not informed at all. It’s just trolling and comment hijacking also known as being an ass
Still voting for Trump.
Make America Great Again? Since he fucked up so much in the first four years…

Anybody else seen the footage of this giant factory explosion in Beirut, Lebanon?
Seeing some people claiming it’s a fireworks factory. The 2nd explosion is just devastating. Several other camera angles exist online.
https://twitter.com/KyleKulinski/status/1290694053550596102?s=19
Looks like the explosions in the industrial districts in Tianjin in 2015.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iv5g2MhPT5I
Wider angle view of the main blast. That’s not fireworks. Amazing they would have something this explosive within a populated area.
https://twitter.com/IraqiSecurity/status/1290692458691670016?s=19
Pretty amazing towards the end of the video you can see the moment the shockwave hits the buildings in the foreground and the windows all blow out, just before the video cuts out.
Truly terrifying. How far away do you figure the buildings in the foreground are away from the blast origin? Looks like 8-10 seconds for the shock to hit the buildings and if the shock is travelling at the speed of sound that’s around 2.5 to 3.5km. Inverse square law would suggest something really big.
The only civillian structures, I can think of, that make explosions that large are fertilizer/chemical plants, natural gas storage and heavy carbon storage/refining (oil).
Could it have been large, pressurized water tanks that heated very quickly?
Might be a component but I don’t think so. Steam tends to condensate then dissipate like this one. This video isn’t super high pressure though, maybe 50 psi max.
https://youtu.be/OO_w8tCn9gU
The mushroom cloud is condensation caused by the low pressure on the back side of the shockwave.
Speaking of Trump, had a talk with my parents today…someone in their townhome found out they’re Trump supporters, and now he won’t say hello to them when walking by. It’s getting scary. That’s Nazi Germany stuff.
They used to be friendly and say hello every day while on walks. He started shaking his head this past time and said, “no no, I found out about you…” and walked away. Holy cow.
Many people I am friendly with are hardcore liberals. I don’t treat them any differently, but boy would the tables turn if I they found out I voted for Trump. Funny how that works.
My mom brought up that her neighbor across the way is a liberal and they have dinner all the time.
I voted Trump (won’t be this time around as discussed) and 99% of my friends are liberals. My friends all think I’m liberal — if they found out they’d actually probably be upset. I guess I will find out if they’re actually friends once I’m out of the closet!
Stay in the closet. Remember “don’t ask don’t tell.” Same applies here. No ones business.
Just shows how divided the country is; where both sides have a strong belief of moral high ground. Both sides get along just fine on a daily basis when politics aren’t openly known. However, my bias leans towards one side being inclusive until you have an opposing viewpoint.
Depends on what you mean by opposing viewpoint. A main sticking point is that Trump’s a bigot, so people who didn’t vote for him struggle with why others would. Trump voters replying with “well, he’s not a bigot” doesn’t really cut it.
I could go into all the other ways the guy is completely dysfunctional and an inept leader, but I’ll spare everyone the whataboutism replies, that I have TDS, and clearly I’m a sheep to the liberal media.
“A main sticking point is that Trump’s a bigot, so people who didn’t vote for him struggle with why others would. Trump voters replying with ‘well, he’s not a bigot’ doesn’t really cut it.”
I don’t think simply stating “a main sticking point is that Trump’s a bigot” cuts it either. The burden of proof is on the one making the claim. So, I think a response of “well, he’s not a bigot” is all that deserves.
I voted for him because he was critical of the FED/claimed to want to pop the bubble they blew. Stupid in retrospect…to believe a liar about a bubble that benefits him.
I don’t care at all about social issues and have the “live and let live” thing there. So, I guess liberal on that front, and conservative on the monetary side. Could explain my friends being liberal – they care about the former and like most have no clue about the latter.
Mammoth, I’ve gone through why I think he’s a bigot and it’s the same thing every time “that’s out of context” “that’s not what that means” “that’s not anti-Semitic” and then here comes the picture of him and Muhammad Ali.
If that’s true they were not and are not good friends. We have friends like that, ie voted for him, we share and enjoy what we have in common; kids, sports, food, wine and travel. We have more in common than differences.
PS: Almost all are done with him like Angry.
Him making fun of that disabled guy should have been a bigger red flag for me, in retrospect.
Think that was even worse than the comments about women, which could be “justified” as locker room talk/guys being guys. Hard to justify making fun of someone who is handicapped. It’s just ridic. I’m an idiot for my vote. Humbling in a way to realize I can be educated and still fall for things. Fell for GA, too. Two things that bother me and still trying to understand how they happened…
The tolerance of the left isn’t so tolerant.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paradox_of_tolerance
I’m a left leaning Independent (but hard left on social issues.) Treat all my maga buddies no differently as well. I can have a convo about anything and their/your opinion is not going to upset me.
That being said: there are a lot of very polarizing moral compass issues that come along with hitching your wagon to Trump at this point (I guess one could make the argument first go around that he could change and grow into the position, but eyeroll….) It’s been well know and heavily documented that he is and has been a complete POS of a human being since as early back as the 80’s. He has lied, cheated, manipulated, broke the law and gotten away with countless crimes against honest hard working folks regularly and sneaks out trouble by overwhelming them with high priced lawyers. He has been fact checked as being the most frequent liar to ever hold the seat of president (and I’d bet dollar to a donut more than any other public servant in the history of this country.) . Yes: he has tried to live up to some campaign promises, but aside from that it’s nothing but lies, winging it, and making himself (and the country) look like fools. He’s an awful, awful man. He has awful people writing policy for him (Miller is a white nationalist actively working to undermine diversity.) He is making decisions for the country by way of executive order based of increasing profits for the wealthy at the cost of the future of our resources and health of our environment/planet. So I can understand those who choose to cut people out of their lives who are cool with all of that. I would never do it, but I get it.
So next question is it depends on your rationalization for voting for him. If it was purely fiscal (getting off the fed, getting away from dependence on China, etc…) then ok I get it (but money should not be the be all end all…) If your thought process is Killary is the Devil (because you believe in a ton of ridiculous conspiracy theories) then ok I get it. If the thought process is you’re fed up with the system so you went for an outlier to see if it brought positive change, ok I get it. If the thought process is I hate liberals and fuck al the snowflakes, so I don’t care who wins as long as they’re republican: you’re not very bright but ok. But it’s hard at this point with everything that’s been done and said the last 3 and a half years to not judge a persons morality and character if they are happy with President Trump. Line in the sand shit. He’s a very bad person, doing a lot of bad things, working to further divide and destroy the fabric of our society. All for an ego stroke and more money for himself, his family and his buddies.
Again, I’m going to do my best to take every person I come across for who they are, and form opinions by actions and not politics. Have plenty of friends who voted for him (and some who still will) that hasn’t effected relationships. But Trump has done a real good job of enhancing (or at least exposing) the divide…..
Bravo!
Can’t we all just get along?
It’s been well know and heavily documented that he is and has been a complete POS of a human being since as early back as the 80’s. He has lied, cheated, manipulated, broke the law and gotten away with countless crimes against honest hard working folks regularly and sneaks out trouble by overwhelming them with high priced lawyers.
Plus 1 million if I could.
Hillary was the devil we knew. There is plenty of evidence of her lack of morals and self-serving actions. Trump was the devil we didn’t know (at least from a political perspective), and now we do. Either way, it was bound to be a shit show…
I was not a big Hilary fan because she didn’t come off as being very likable (Go listen to the interview she should have done during the campaign and finally did with Howard Stern and she might change some minds on that) and came with her own baggage. Some of it deserved, lots of it purely made up shit for sensationalized news ratings and playing to a base. I probably would have picked 10 other names before her for the 16’ dem nomination (I’m not a Berner.)
That being Said (As someone who didn’t like her and was mildly conflicted about voting for her) she is highly intelligent, and would have surrounded herself with a solid staff. She would have tighten the bond with Our European alloys Instead of fracturing many of the relationships. We’d still be viewed universally as the Leading nation of the free world. We would have had stability (instead of the roller coaster.) Maybe lower highs, definitely higher lows.
You also cannot ignore how it would have positively empowered Women in America, who have spent much of our history as second class citizens. It’s far past time a woman had a nod at driving the boat. They were also empowered by Trump: but it was to stand up to male Chauvinistic negativity instead. For that reason alone you could argue a Hilary experiment would have been better then another rich old white dude.
Biden sucks. He’s better then Trump but not by much. He would be my pick 18 of the 23 or so dems who originally threw their hats into the ring. There is a lot of young talent but Demo National party is a mess. It’s Very sad that these are our choices. Only positive about Biden is he has a very good pool of people to select for his cabinet from if he wins. Then hopefully he’s just a figurehead, and the younger smarter people do the work and make the decisions.
Next 6 months are going to be a wild ride my beaver brethren. Hope you all are well (regardless of this political stuff.)
Stop pretending to be an Independent.
I am. Repub party such a mess with the tea party crap it’s a non starter.
I vote for Kasich in a heart beat over Most of the demo field. I’d give Strong consideration to anyone that was right center. But they‘be only been providing hard right Candidates pandering to the extreme for a while now.
Can’t really consider 3rd party unfortunately this election.
Still voting for Trump.
As a famous person would twitter….So Sad
People voted for Trump for many different reasons, I guess. One friend of mine knows full well Trump is a POS, but he wanted to be sure any Supreme Court vacancies would be filled by hard core conservatives (he’s really annoyed that RBG just keeps on ticking).
That might actually be a good topic discussion: how was I/we able to see so clearly through Riley and fall for GA?
Charismatic leader?
Desperation for change in leadership, even if it means a net loss in overall leadership quality?
GA came in with good intentions at first, but think he was more confident in his abilities than he should have been.
Guess we should have known better based on the failure at his previous gig, but it’s easy to ignore the evidence as an anamoly when you want something badly enough.
When I say good intentions, I do applaud Andersen for his early efforts to push donors to raise funds for the Valley center project. Plus he worked with our AD to pivot on that project to modify the locker room area and make it even more player friendly than the original plans. He also put alot of effort into making the program more player friendly, getting Ipads purchased for the team, for example. Riley disnt have the energy for that stuff. I remember meeting Riley once during his final year amd he talked about “some day, we might have a locker room remodel happen in that valley center, wouldn’t that be neat”.
He didnt sound very confident it would ever get done, but when GA came in, the project took off immediately.
I also think he put so much effort into non-football coaching activities that he wasn’t as focused on football as he should/could have been. Spread too thin. And he relied too much on trying to make us a Utah carbon copy, rather than making this the best Oregon State program it could be.
Also showed he was pretty bad at player and coach evaluation, and when things started breaking down, he only made them worse with his knee jerk fixes(changing offensive systems every year, not knowing how to make the best of existing talent rather than running existing talent out of town)
For me, I was excited about Andersen because I had the impression he had high winning percentage at Wisconsin. Sure, there was talent at Wisconsin, and he “should” have been able to win, but he mostly did, and they had some very productive ground games. I also remembered that Utah Sugar bowl win against Alabama, and even though that was Wittingham’s team, the fact that Andersen was D coordinator and got it done in a legitimate bowl game, in the SE, was encouraging to me. I thought he was P5 legit, turned out he wasn’t.
I still think he has many of the characteristics of bi-polarity, and that limits his coaching ceiling. I base that on his crazy texts to Canzano (“going to keep grinding!/I hired the wrong fucking guys!”) and alleged involvement with college girls (a high risk behavior for a coach and married man) was another symptom if that alleged involvement is true.
I was in hook line and sinker. His No nonsense tough guy talk made me want to suit up and go Hit someone as opposed to the aw shucks gee golly thing we heard year in and year out.
Plus he had a recently successful track record and was costing at a top 20 program.
Fool me once….
I didn’t fall for Andersen…..
Truth
No, but you had a boner for a guy that couldn’t even cut it as an OC at another PAC-12 school.
But yay for you!
Go find the thread where Andersen was hired and post everyone’s opinion.
I was on board with GA, but I was intrigued by the supposed “big name” former NFL head coach who was interested. I don’t think I was ever clear on who that was? Jack Del Rio?
I honestly think falling for Andersen is very similar to falling for Trump. Andersen was the anti-Riley. We were so fed up with the lackadaisical, golly gee attitude, that Andersen’s tough, no nonsense attitude felt like what we needed to right the ship. I think a lot of people voted for Trump for a similar reason. People were fed up with all the political correctness, social justice, and entitlement attitudes, that they saw Trump as the Gary Andersen for our country.
For me it was like when I was in high school and college when I fell for any girl that would go out with me because I couldn’t believe that one such could exist.
https://www.coloradoan.com/story/news/2020/08/04/colorado-state-university-athletes-say-administration-covering-up-coronavirus-health-threats/5572625002/
That seems like pretty bat shit crazy behavior in these times. Sort of stupid also, it’s not like CSU is any kind of football power.
I fell for GA. He built a program (USU) and had success at a bigger program. The big red flags were the bodybag B10 championship game and his Wisconsin exit always seemed a little fishy. I was more inclined to be optimistic because I was happy we finally got to move on from Riley. Plus the other names that were being thrown around were uninspiring (Mendenhall, Calhoun, etc.)
IIRC the national media all praised the hire, too. I think only Gary A and Barry A knew the truth going into the GA era in Corvallis.
Did you move, or are you on vacation?
We moved to be closer to family. Thank goodness for 100% WFH.
If anyone wants to hear stories from the real estate market right now, it’s crazy out there.
What are you seeing?
In both DE and our area of OH, houses were only on the market for an average of 7-10 days. We had 7 offers on our DE house in 2 days and ended up selling for over list price. The DE realtors I spoke with said there’s a lot of people moving down from NJ to get away from high taxes.
But…while looking for houses, we saw a high number of properties go contingent, then come back on the market after a few days. This happened multiple times for some houses. Talking to realtors, they confirmed they’ve seen an unusually high number of these situations. Sometimes it’s buyers not getting mortgage approval, sometimes it’s people just straight up walking away without giving any reason.
My take is that low rates and easy funding are giving people the impression they can afford their dream home, and COVID-brain is pushing them into making rash decisions. There are probably some who wise up and back out before making a dumb mistake, but many others are going to be stuck in a bad situation if the economy stays where it is. Realtor sentiment is that there will be a booming short sale market in a year or two.
To give you an idea of what kind of buyers are out there, all but one of the offers we received for our DE house were FHA loans and the buyer was asking for a sizable seller’s credit. Basically, they were putting almost nothing down, then asking us for cash at closing. This on a house that’s probably a step up from a “starter home.” One offer was for way above list price, then the buyer was asking for a very high seller’s credit to offset. I calculated that it would have ended up being a $0 net payment for them once you add the small down payment and subtract the massive cash payment they were asking for.
Also, we were approved for a $1M mortgage, which is entirely divorced from reality and in no way representative of our income profile. I was also told by multiple lenders that we were a “rare, no-brainer case” for them because we have good credit, put down a reasonable down payment, and weren’t pushing our debt-to-income ratio to the max.
If you really believe in inflation, have confidence in your financial situation and property values, it actually kind of makes sense to leverage this much. But I can guarantee you most of these people are not doing that, and that’s a pretty big gamble to take when you consider the other side of the trade.
we saw a high number of properties go contingent, then come back on the market after a few days.
Interesting post.
My mom was dealing with this when trying to buy a townhouse, and we think it was the seller getting better offers after agreeing to an offer, and trying to find a way out. Not sure, though. Maybe it’s a shady buyer pool who had financing break down.
We’re seeing homes move in 3 days here…last one went 26k over asking on a starter home. Starter homes are the place to be for now because they will rise the most in relative terms as the upper end compresses downward. I expect compression like that to continue until nothing is affordable. Just more distortions due to the FED, but the behavior makes rational sense. People are being incentivized to do this.
How long did it your transaction take to close? Is large volume creating backlogs at title companies and lending originators?
One of our kids needs to to pay us off on a five year promissory note in October. They have very good credit scores and a high verifiable twelve year income from the same employer. When should they start the process? Thx
No closing delays here. The realtors I talked to all recommended using smaller lenders because the big banks take longer and are known for causing delays. I don’t know if that’s market-related or just the big banks being less efficient. We named our closing date on both transactions and were able to close on the exact day we wanted. The title companies didn’t seem to have any issues.
My understanding is activity at banks has been slower as of late because they’re jacking up lending standards on most types of loans. I think they’re bracing themselves for the coming wave of defaults. Of course, the mortgage markets are different because the government will guarantee anything.
Has it been mentioned? Madrigal out of the game in the third inning with a shoulder injury on a slide into third base. He appeared to be in some pain.
Luck O’ the Beavs.
Anybody else watching Last Chance U?
I watched episode 2 and 3 tonight. It’s been a pretty good show so far. Wright’s family showed up in one of the episodes, having a backyard viewing of the OSU/Hawaii game last year. Kind of cool to see it from the family’s perspective, watching their son get burnt for a TD on national TV. Rezjohn had a pretty impressive pick in one of the games too. He talks too much, but you can see the talent exists for him to be a pretty good player if he can focus more and admit there is room for improvement.
I am up to Episode 7. Pretty captivating so far. Been focused on Wright. Talent is there but seems a bit too much into himself. If he is going to come in with that attitude, he is going to see why there a huge jump between a PAC-12 WR and a JUCO guy.
I might check it out since everyone is raving about it. If it’s that same coach (that jarhead/criminal guy) might not get far.
This season’s coach is John Beam, and so far he comes off as a really good dude. I didn’t see past seasons so i can’t compare, but I don’t think you’ll have any issues with this guy.
Oh sweet. Definitely will check it out then.
Gold and Silver price is going crazy. Has to have some sort of correction soon.
Hedge funds woke up to the dollar being toilet paper. It makes sense this would happen given only 5% of the population has any allocation to gold. So when then all realize they need it at once, you get this.
I don’t think we see a correction of any significance yet. 2k is now support. If it breaks that 1950 has a lot of support, which was the old high.
Yeah, there’s been a surge of notes from investment banks advocating for gold, as well as a rush of Robinhood daytraders into it.
The contrarian in me is leery of the idea that the whole world is finally understanding the value of gold…but we’re living in Bizarro Fed World now, so anything is possible.
I find it pathetic they advocate for gold now.
I was advocating for it at 1250-1300 when it was clear the base was in. How are they professionals?
They’re professional analysts. They tell you what their bosses have already done so they have someone to sell to.
Also, from a fundamental standpoint, the currency debasement was the big wake up call. It’s actually happening so it’s obvious today. Independent thinkers saw this coming years ago, but it’s near impossible to be a contrarian in corporate circles. Everyone wants to know what everyone else is doing so they can blameshift when they’re wrong.
Corporate groupthink is scary, and doesn’t get near enough scrutiny, IMO.
Your’e 100% right. As a corporate survivor can verify. We used to say “tell them what they want to hear and do what you want.” Corollary was; “you can have a short easy meeting or a long ugly one.”
Yeah I’m not sure I could ever go back into the corporate world, nor am I sure they’d want me. Independent thought is not welcome. I love the Woody Allen line that I wouldn’t want to be part of any group that wants me as a member…applies to the corporate world, too. What gets me most is their dialogue. I can’t deal with keywords, etc.
What’s particularly concerning to me is that everyone is listening to the same consultants and using the same (usually over-optimistic) economic forecasts. They’re all getting herded in the same direction, which proves dangerous when those decisions they’re making end up being bad ones.
We used to laugh at the “grab bag” of buzz words. It only took a few random slips of paper from the grab bag to create a mission statement. Empower, harness, facilitate, platform, synergy, users, clients, to name just a few. Try it out.
Kanban boards and Agile systems are all the rage right now.
Agile works well for some things. Many are trying to force fit it in situations where it doesn’t necessarily fit.
Guys, just a head’s up: you might see an ad in the next few days. I’m talking with a Beav who is a long time poster here. He has excess catch from fishing up in Alaska, and wanted to advertise selling it here to other Beavs. I’m fine with that; we’re working it out. Just a head’s up if you see an ad.
Rivals has the Beavs LB group ranked #2 in the nation. Surprising that they mention Hughes-Murray and Gumbs and don’t mention Roberts or Speights.
https://n.rivals.com/news/the-five-best-linebacker-groups-in-college-football
We coulda been contenders…
Hey….
That’s nice too see, for what it’s worth. I was really looking forward to watching the defense play this year….
UCONN has officially cancelled their participation in the 2020 football season.
https://twitter.com/UConnHuskies/status/1290986145065517056?s=19
Dominoes……….
Maybe we just wait for all other teams to call it quits and declare ourselves champs.
Please.
Calling bullshit.
The real reason is UConn left the AAC and is now an independent. No conference = no games.
Notre Dame was smart enough to partner up with the ACC. But they’re Notre Dame. And put eyes on TV screens. UConn? Not so much. They’re a CFB also ran who generates very little revenue. If they cancelled men’s and women’s basketball then I’d agree with their statement.
Using Coronavirus as a convenient excuse here. I’d be Willing to bet if they polled the players, most of them wanted to play.
When there is a college football season I’ll return and say I told you so.
There’s too much $ to be lost to not have one.
Not counting Notre Dame there are 5 other Independents also looking for games, worst case scenario play everyone home and home and you have a 10 game schedule. No way they couldn’t get at least 5-8 games scheduled just by playing other independents.
Being an independent isn’t why they cancelled their season.
Yet you completely ignore the logistics of said trips from Storrs, Connecticut to those locations.
In the name of health and player safety (allegedly), isn’t that a big reason non conference games were eliminated?
As usual, douchebag completely misses the mark.
Douchebag
So travel (not being an independent) is now the reason they cancelled their season according to you? Sure, I buy that.
It also isn’t what you previously claimed.
But whichever argument you want to make.
Insulting me makes you feel good about yourself doesn’t it?
FFS, I was responding to your stupid argument.
If you’re too fucking stupid to understand, that’s a you problem.
You’re still a douchebag.
And a fucktard.
LOL, okay,
Now do the Big Ten and Pac 12? Why’d they cancel? Too many Independents in each conference?
And honestly, every time you insult me it just makes me smile. Knowing you dislike me proves I am not a terrible human being like you.
Keep the insults coming, between your chores anyway. Don’t upset mom she might stop buying the Orange Soda you love so much.
The fact you don’t understand the difference shows how dense you are.
I’d explain it, but a simpleton like you wouldn’t understand and still think it’s correct.
I feel sorry for all the children you’ve touched in your life.
Good thing I avoid Bend(over) at all costs.
But keep up the resistance Corona bro!
Douchebag.
LOL, you are adorable.
Those who can, do. Those who can’t, teach.
That’s you.
Actually I have a better nickname for a dimwit like yourself.
Chicken Little
Cool story bro…
But seriously, your obsession with me is getting creepy. Luckily I know people like you, keyboard warriors from mom’s basement but in the real world scared of your own shadow.
You do you man.
Sqwauk sqwauk sqwauk.
It’s cute you think you’re important chicken little.
I don’t think I am important, it’s cute you think you aren’t the idiot here.
I am telling you I am not important, your obsession is as embarrassing for you as it is entertaining for me.
Sticking with a bit of a wildlife theme… any of you ABs see this? We should be able to do something with this:
