Update: due to quick and generous donations, we’re in the clear. Big thanks to all. I was able to negotiate 30% off hosting rates, which helped us reach the goal faster.

If you still would like to donate and can afford it during these tough times, monthly, recurring donations are best, and they are much appreciated, as my time is limited these days.

We can now use this as a general thread.

Thanks, all.

  1. To break the ice and not talk about $, I think the momentum to play either Thanksgiving or at least by January might take on life of its own. Once you plant that seed in peoples’ minds, it’s hard to go back. The BIG 10 planted the seed. Maybe their getting assurance from the Govt that lawsuits will be picked up by them and/or thrown out? That’s the only way I can see it happening. Basically insure the Unis. Are you guys willing to have your public funds go toward that? And what are the players’ rights in that situation?

      Please.

      Calling bullshit.

The real reason is UConn left the AAC and is now an independent. No conference = no games.

Notre Dame was smart enough to partner up with the ACC. But they’re Notre Dame. And put eyes on TV screens. UConn? Not so much. They’re a CFB also ran who generates very little revenue. If they cancelled men’s and women’s basketball then I’d agree with their statement.

Using Coronavirus as a convenient excuse here. I’d be Willing to bet if they polled the players, most of them wanted to play.

When there is a college football season I’ll return and say I told you so.

There’s too much $ to be lost to not have one.

True. CDC quietly updates their stats to show that only 6% of coronavirus deaths are from strictly coronavirus. The other 94% averaged over 2 comorbidities and/or old age. That is around 9000-10,000 deaths strictly related to covid.

        • 6
          2

It’s been interestimg to see how quickly people have jumped on this “only 6%” topic this week.
As if the Covid19 death toll is inflated because people have concurrent conditions that have also contributed to their death.
I work with medical data all day. ICD10 diagnosis codes can take up multiple positions on a patient’s record. They’re not mutually exclusive.

People, please understand you can have a heart condition and diabetes simultaneously, and both can contribute to your demise. That doesn’t mean thay diabetes is getting all of the credit for your heart condition.

So when a person dies with multiple diagnosis codes attached to their death certificate, it means they died of a medical condition, and also were a Covid19 positive patient very recently, and that Covid19 contributed to their death.

It would be very rare to contract Covid19 and die of that alone. It’s most often the resulting pnuemonia that kills patients as a result of their body’s reaction to fighting Covid19.

I would even say those 6% of records that are Covid19 alone are likely missing some diag codes.
If you are perfectly healthy, you’re probably not going to die after a Covid19 infection. That is pretty common knowledge at this point.
If you have health conditions similar to those listed in the stastics as well as similar age ranges, you are more likely to have a rough time recovering.
So basically what you’ve been told from April on down the road is now supported by statistics that the CDC has compiled.

          • Yes, and now that we’ve established that healthy people aren’t dying left and right – the crux of the initial panic and freak out – we can being opening the economy back to normal. Those that are older and with health conditions should continue extra precaution. Where were you screaming for shutdown when the swine flu ravaged people with underlying illness and old age? Zero lock downs and mandates then.

          • Again, I ask knowing healthy people are fine from this: what is your arbitrary cut off for when we need to worry about non-healthy people? As above, we don’t care about normal flu deaths a year, or larger death waves like swine flu. So, don’t throw in this morality argument about “you only care about healthy people?!”.

  4. BASEBALL, darn, I miss it!
Here’s a piece on robot umpires; actually, a study by some grad students of the (in)accuracy of human umps. Blue doesn’t look too good.

Nearly 4 million pitches were analyzed. They found, “Between 2008 and 2018, MLB home plate umpires made incorrect calls over 12 percent of the time. “ That worked out to 1.6 mistakes per inning.
Additionally, “When batters had two strikes, the error rate for all umpires increased – incorrect calls happen 29 percent of the time, almost double the error rate when the batter had one or no strikes.”

I’m certain the numbers would have looked a lot worse had the performance of Greg Street or Mark Buchanan been included!

    https://theconversation.com/an-analysis-of-nearly-4-million-pitches-shows-just-how-many-mistakes-umpires-make-114874

    • But…the art of catchers framing pitches!
I’m a purist in many ways, but I can’t stand bad home plate umps. Put a human everywhere else, but home plate has to be a robot.

      • I agree. Athletes work extremely hard to hone their skills. And when they do everything right, and they are the better player (whether it’s the pitcher or the batter), they should get their intended result. They shouldn’t have it ripped away by a person in authority who made a poor judgement. It reduces the motivation to strive for perfection if your performance is being judged imperfectly.

      • You think so, huh? Let me ask you, ever put on the mask and been behind the plate to call balls/strikes? At the HS level and above?
That static “box” you see, filmed from 350 ft. away on TV, is just that. if you’ve ever umpired at that level, you already know
that the strike zone is a living, breathing 3 dimentional entity that cannot be analysed by mechanical means. Can a robot see and determine if a batter is assuming a “natural batting stance” at the plate? Or notice if an illegal or altered bat is being used? Will it see catcher’s interference?
Or have the mobility to adjust to the proper angle when the ball, runner, catcher and plate are all converging on a play at the same time?

        • When I say robot I’m talking about the current computerized strike zone. They can put an ump back there for the other stuff. But humans are awful at calling balls and strikes.

          • Like I said, the strike zone really is an area of some fluidity. Ballplayers, coaches and managers know
and accept that as part of the game. Questionable balls/strikes, yeah they happen. But you will rarely
see that come into play as far as determining the final outcome of a game.

          • Do you remember Greg Street!? He determined the entire CWS.

I watch a ton of baseball. Every game there are missed calls that determine the entire outcome…pitcher might throw a strike, ump misses the call, and next pitch is a hr. Literally happened in a game I was watching last night. Just rolled my eyes.

          • Do we want a level playing field or not?

Even if one accepts ochoco’s “Ballplayers, coaches and managers know
and accept that as part of the game.”
. The Greg Street example showed that teams with familiarity with the slant of a particular ump gain an unfair advantage.

As for Buchanan, who knew that fool was so sensitive??

          • Oh, for sure, guys like street are out there, how about don deckinger? Can’t say I agree with you, though, that every game,
missed calls WILL determine a winner or loser. Over the course of 9 innings, 1 team or the other is going
to outhit, outdefend, outrun and make fewer mental/physical errors than their opponent. And with few
exceptions, that team is going to come out on top. Mostly the fans want these changes, I don’t hear any managers or players calling for an “auto zone”.

  5. I updated the main post regarding the status, so you can read that update. Big thanks.

That said, I don’t want to go all Mamma Machado, but still do appreciate the monthly recurring donations – they help with time being money these days plus the website fees that pop up throughout the year. Appreciate the support. I bought a couple years because we actually had excess, and that’s what the donations covered, so we should be good for a few. Awesome.

    • That story was a little misleading. Those guys would have been cleared to play starting with winter term anyway, because they would have beem enrolled and completed 3 full academic quarters(summer doesnt count) to fulfill their 1 year of academic residency.
The question that hasn’t been answered is would they have been cleared to play fall ball if the Pac12 actually played fall ball? That ruling hasnt been made as far as I know, and it may be moot anyway.
I’ve seen several other players have their sitting period waived this year, but these guys may never know.

  6. Gotta live this new rule in college football this year, in the name of Covid safety.

“The change for 2020 would be to include only one Captain from each team and the Referee and the Umpire. These four individuals are the only essential people that can attend the toss, and these four individuals will be spaced out and will conform to social distancing guidelines.”

And now that you’ve had the coin toss, go bash the shit out each other for 3 hours, safely of course!

  7. It probably is. Hadn’t really thought about that angle, where everybody is saying they’re concerned for player safety. Some of the refs you see out there have co-morbidities up the wazoo.

  8. This is interesting and something I havent seen before. Not sure how it is treated regarding NCAA recruiting rules.
A local player, Keenan Speer-Johnson from Tigard, posted this. It’s his birthday today. Often times teams will send a graphic to a player that says “happy birthday”, which is totally acceptable.
Oregon ups the ante by sending a video message to him, and then the player posted the video to social media.

Nornally, a team cannot talk publicly about a player they are recruiting, but since it was originally a private message that the player himself made public, I guess this is ok?

So then it makes me wonder what’s to stop a team from sending videos of them gushing over a player and having the recruits post that stuff? Seems like a grey area that could go either way.

    https://twitter.com/_KeenanJohnson/status/1301216973674680327?s=20

      • I dont know. Main difference is I’ve never seen a coach mention a recruit by name, so it’s just strange to see video of that happening now. Conceptually, it’s similar to sending mail but I dont know if the rules changed recently since on campus visits arent happening? Why havent we seen video like this before?

  9. Angry, thanks for the surprise kickback from AB for the recruiting twitter stuff. It paid for my new favorite hat, the Block O Oneoldbeav special(it’s a really comfy hat Oob, I love it)

Anyway, just a big thank you to you both and to the site contributors. Stay angry, my friends.

  10. Ochoco makes some good points above regarding the robot ump topic. So nice to be discussing (arguing?) sports rather than what has dominated the site in recent weeks.

Regarding Greg Street, here is what angry said back in June of ’17 in a post titled: GREG STREET – WORST UMPIRE EVER
It’s hard to understand how an SEC umpire is behind home plate in an LSU/OSU game. But anyway, this guy was the worst ump I have ever seen…
I am making this post in the hopes he never umps again. When other people Google this ass clown, they hopefully see there’s a track record.

My search engine had that post the #2 item when I searched just now; guess angry has success at more than growing old tomato seeds!

Oh, and as for the ultrasensitive Mark Buchanan, how many here remember him?

  11. I’m seeing a fair number of Bills reporters/fans predicting Hodgins doesn’t make the final roster. Sounds like they’re pretty happy with him, but it’s a crowded depth chart. If true, decent chance he lands on another team with more options for upward mobility. Downside though is he’d have to start over and learn a new system right before the season starts.

Hope he doesn’t get stuck in practice squad purgatory.

  12. Watching the Reds/Cards game. Card pitcher in the 9th just threw 2 of 4 pitches for strikes, all called balls. Winning run on base. Again, every game umps are deciding outcomes in ways that seem innocuous but are a huge deal. We’ll see if the guy scores…

  13. Researchers from the State University of Londrina found that people who reported “antisocial traits,” such as low levels of empathy and high levels of callousness and risk-taking, were less-likely to comply with Covid-19 prevention measures, such as wearing a mask and social distancing.

In this case, “antisocial” refers to traits that are typically present in people diagnosed with antisocial personality disorder, which is defined as “a chronic and pervasive disposition to disregard and violate the rights of others,” according to the American Psychological Association. It is characterized by common behaviors such as repeatedly violating the law and exploiting others, and traits such as deceitfulness, impulsivity, aggressiveness, reckless disregard for the safety of self and others and irresponsibility, according to the APA. People with the mental health condition often lack of guilt, remorse, and empathy.

The disorder is also referred to as “dyssocial personality, psychopathic personality and sociopathic personality.” Antisocial personality disorder occurs in about 1% of the U.S. population, and is more common in men.

“These traits explain, at least partially, the reason why people continue not adhering to the containment measures even with the increasing numbers of cases and deaths,” the Brazilian study authors wrote.

  14. I’m actually a bit concerned I have Covid. Last night started a weird, dry cough.
I can’t imagine how I’d have gotten it. Haven’t gone out, and when I do I wear a mask. I did have a guy install a central air (A/C unit) last week. He wasn’t wearing a mask. Hope it’s just allergies or the fires lately.

    • It’s usually accompanied by other symptoms like appetite loss, chills/shaking, fatigue/tiredness, mild nausea, throat issues, headache, fever. If some of those other things start to develop, give your doc a call.
Hopefully it’s just that new cold air from the AC unit

  15. CJ, speaking of guitar picks, my favorite ones just shot up from 4.95 for a 3-pack to 8.94 for a 3-pack. No inflation, though, according to the FED.

  16. CBS hasn’t started a college football pickem yet, but they do have a Football parlay pool now.
I started a Beavrecruiting group is anybody wants to join. I think you can technically win money, but would have to place nationally to do so. Entry is free.

      • “Most people with myocarditis recover completely, either with or without treatment, and have no lasting symptoms or complications. For example, if it is caused by a viral infection, the myocarditis may get better as the person’s immune system fights the infection and they recover from the virus.”

        • Also to note it is common with the flu:

“Acute myocarditis is a well-known complication of influenza infection. The clinical expression varies from asymptomatic to fulminant myocarditis, which can result in severe hemodynamic dysfunction, necessitating high-dose catecholamines and mechanical circulatory support”

          • Angry, I’m just reporting further information. I don’t know as much as anyone if we should be playing; and I definitely never said it was low or otherwise.

          • WTF???

            Thanks for answering.
If 4%-14% of student athletes are due to die of cardiac arrest after developing Myocarditis, I don’t think schools are being too cautious.
Especially if 1/3 of Big10 athletes who’ve had Covid19 also develop Myocarditis.

          • From the same article:

“ Myocarditis is the reason for sudden cardiac death in 5-14% of athletes < 35 years of age. For prevention of myocarditis and sudden cardiac death it is recommended to stop elite sport for 12 weeks after suspected myocarditis.”

          • Which means if you are the unlucky 33% you will be out for the whole season. This figure may be higher or lower with a larger sample size of positive athletes.

          • Two stated facts here are not agreeing with each other.

            – Myocarditis is a common flu complication
            – 4-14% of athletes with myocarditis will die of cardiac arrest

Clearly this is not the case, right? People get the flu all the time, athletes often play through it, and young athletes dying of cardiac arrest is extremely rare. So one of these facts is completely false.

It sounds to me that the stats are most likely being misinterpreted. It’s not that 4-14% of young people being physically active with myocarditis will die; rather, it’s that 4-14% of young athletes that die of cardiac arrest can trace the cause to myocarditis.

          • Right, I’m not an expert on this. There are levels and different causes for Myocarditis. My understanding is that if caused by virus it is typically less severe and subsided after symptoms/ few weeks. And, the percentage caused by flu is upwards of 11% at most whereas this doctor claims around 33% from COVID.

  17. Interesting note: OSU was one of only ten P5 schools to completely release data about test results and protocols for an ESPN survey. Obviously, we’ve had very few positive tests, so I can see why they’d be forthcoming with data that makes them look good, but it further emphasizes how well OSU has done vs. peers.

  18. College Pickem Pool update.
I think I found the CBS pool setup. They had it buried withing the more general “football pickem” screen this year, which is usually for NFL games.
They wont start picking matchups till week 2, so this pool will coincide with the NFL schedule.

Can somebody try this link to see if you can join the Beavrecruiting group?

    http://beavrecruitingnfl2020.football.cbssports.com/e/302fb44a6f1909a8cad482f9c8ef01c9a3060b73e624329fe83c8be8442b07d1

    • They have several customization options. If it’s wanted, we could do a combination of college and NFL games, or jist college. Personally, I prefer college, but will let you all decide what you’d like.
I can also decide how many total games(up to 15) get included and can either choose the games each week, or let CBS just dictate the games.
The most simple setup is probably jist letting CBS pick their top 15 games, so we dont risk having a week where I dont select the games on time.

I traveled to Denver on business for 10 years. 21 inches of snow in a couple of days when I was there once in October (I think it was 1997). Even in January, you get a 10-degree day and two days later it’s 60 degrees out. Crazy ass weather.

    • I’ve seen some 60 degree swings, but this is the first time I’ve seen snow in Summer…ever…anywhere.
      Well I haven’t seen it yet. Hoping I don’t.

      • 15 years ago I went camping at summit lake(high cascade lake) im Oregon on the 2nd weekend in August. It was 80degrees with a few high clouds when I got there. By nightfall it had cooled to 60. Woke up at 2 am to rain and 40degrees. Went back to sleep. Got up at 8 am to 5 inches of snow and 30 degrees. Needless to say I packed up and went home. That was the biggest temperature & weather swing I’ve ever witnessed. It was wild and I wasn’t at all prepared for it

        • That makes sense in the mountains, but this is in the city proper. It’s incredible. My parents are visiting the next day..was hoping for good weather. Speaking of which, I might be ghost for a few days hosting them, NiceBeav and OldBeav, if you guys want to start up a new thread. That will be Wednesday through Sunday.

When I lived in SLC, I heard that in the late 60’s it was 100 degrees on I think June 27th and on June 29th they had measurable snow at the airport. It’s the high elevation and lake effect there.

    • There is the theory that purchasing a new central air conditioning unit will cause extreme weather changes, angry’s recent move is probably responsible here.
BTW, how’s the “weird, dry cough”?

      • I think that cough is due to the fires here in CO. They’re awful. I notice it picks up when I take walks.
I feel fine otherwise so it must be air quality.

        • I got to the point where I got a prescription for singulair for fire season. Never had athsma but the last 5 years fire seasons have been ridiculous and I start to wheeze.

  21. Looks like Luton, Nall, & Hodgins make their teams. Unfortunately Pierce was cut but expect him to be picked up by another team or make the Bears practice squad at worst based on his camp. Practice squad limit has increased from 10 to 16 this season which helps too.

Edit: Togiai did not make the Eagle’s roster. Expect a similar path to Pierce.

Another edit:Brandel DID NOT make the Vikings squad

    • Isn’t luton the only back up?

Anyway, good for those guys. This was a weird year to enter the NFL. Rookies had a hard time making the cut on rosters due to lack of preseason games and known commodities being given the benefit of the doubt. Draft status and good camps were about the only way in from what I’ve read.

  22. What better way to liven up a slow weekend than mention of Mike Riley?
An outfit called “Stadiumtalk” is out with a ranking of the 50 most overrated College FB coaches and smilin’ Mike is second only to Lane Kiffen on their list!
    Some tidbits:
-In 18 seasons he had a .531 winning percentage and NEVER won a conference title.
-But, “While Riley is overrated, he’s one of the good guys. Which we can’t say for most of the dudes on this list.”

So, there you have it. The “nice-guy” image always gets a mention.

BTW, the article shows a different, but similar, “block O” hat to the one we’ve dubbed the Ericson Lid. Far too cluttered to be a classic!

    https://www.stadiumtalk.com/s/overrated-college-football-coaches-8fc867a7fdc940df

  23. I guess Kirk Herbstreit had an emotional plea on Gameday. Anyone see/hear it?
I heard some of the audio and it sounded simultaneously heartfelt and cringe-worthy. I didn’t hear it all so I’m not making a judgment but wondered if anyone else has comments.

  24. Luton makes the Jags roster, Glennon gets cut, so Jake will start his NFL career on the same level as Herbert.

Both should have fine careers as QB2.

  25. Regarding covering the garden, we’re going to get 25 degree lows and 3 to 5 inches of snow. Wouldn’t plastic or a sheet collapse under that weight? I think we just got hosed (hey it’s 2020) and will lose a productive garden a bit early. But for year one we’re happy with the production we got. It was incredible, actually.

    • Yes its a PITA to set up coverings a fully grown plants. Calling it a season is the easiest route. Just pick everything you can as it starts snowing. Id assume your area gets its first frost around the first week of Oct anyway.
Did you find that home grown veggies taste better then store bought? I notice when cooking with home grown veggies things tend to taste better. What bias is that?

      • So much better…everything has robust flavor. Store stuff is okay, but it’s bland relative to the garden.
Yeah, I think I might just call it a season we have a ton of frozen squash and tomato sauce already. I’ll pick the remaining peppers and green tomatoes and fry those. Thanks, man. I’m just stoked we had this much success year 1. I think Oct 15th is normal freeze, so this is over a Month early. Sucks! But the snow should put out the fires.

Luton won the backup job in Jacksonville? I thought his ceiling was a backup in the Pac 12. 90% of the posters here look like damn fools now.

    • Kudos to him. I’ll fess up to doubting him for 3 years. Hope he can stay healthy and save some of that NFL dough for later in life. Jags are going nowhere fast so he may get a shot to see the field after Minshew gets leveled a few times.

    • I didn’t think he’d make it that far ever but really did anyone? No one predicted he’d get drafted when the season ended or even get a training camp invite.

I figured XFL was his ceiling. Really hoping Smith can parlay this into getting a big time QB here. If he can get a guy who ran a wing t offense in high school to the NFL, what could he do with better talent?

      • I have said for a while he is Eli Manning lite. Give him an all-pro O-line and talented skill players and he can move the chains. Give him crap protection and a few huge hits and he will throw it away every chance he gets. I mean lots of QBs out there like that that could be serviceable in the right situation, only a handful of people like Russel Wilson that could make any situation work.

      • Ummmm, c’mon Bill, lets not dis the winged T !
Great training for a young QB and it’s gonna return to favor at schools like OSU………one day.
        NFL……..not so much.

        • I really do like watching the wing t with all the deception and creativity. Shame it doesn’t work consistently at higher levels of football.

          • Agree.
I had (almost serious) hopes that Jonathan would see his rich RB stable and a chance to use an offense that opponents don’t often see as right for a little winged T.

      • One person here predicted his NFL future but then got banned for it. Angry and Antifa seem to have a lot in common. The only correct view is their view. Much love all. Be safe. Equality for all and let’s hope to see the Beavs on the field again soon.

  27. Not much Conforto buzz on here, but the guy is third in the majors in batting average. Nice to see Beavs not just playing, but thriving in MLB. For a while, it felt like all I read about Beavs in the majors were the random “another poor start from Matt Boyd” headlines.

    • The articles about Jacoby making millions to rehab have stopped too… lol. Conforto is making it less and less likely he gets an extension with his play. Wonder what team takes him from the Mets. If he keeps going he could make 300 mil or in that neighborhood next deal.

      • Yeah, it’s super lazy this year. They’re not including lines. I have the option of change the rules and adding my own custom lines, but that’s too much work for me to bother with.

        • I’d guess we’re all going to have the same picks in any game with a wide spread. So the winner will be the guy who picks the winner in games that have a tight spread. I don’t see many of those this week.

          • It seems like most years the best picker each week barely gets 50% correct anyway. I can try adding spreads next week. Just boils down to me remembering and havimg time to look them up and add them and still giving everybody enough time to make picks

          • I went in and added some point spreads for this week’s games. If you’ve already made picks, you will want to go back in and review.
Some spreads weren’t available on the Yahoo odds page so i just made a few up.

This is a politics related question. Feel free to remove it if it people don’t want to talk about it.
I have a genuine question I’m hoping someone can help explain for me.

It’s related to that PDX MAGA car rally from last week. Afterwards, 2 40-something guys are now dead. One, an self proclaimed Antifa guy apparently shot a guy from Vancouver who belonged to a group called Patriot Prayer. Then last week, federal agents tracked down the antifa guy and shot/killed him before they could capture him alive.

What I am trying to understand is why a Russian man from Boise, Idaho was the organizer for the rally? His online name is Alex Kyzik, but his real name is Alex Kuzmenko.
He is seen at the beginning of this video where he is filming himself at the staging area for the rally. Seems like a nice enough guy.
He also in a separate video makes very clear to the people attending the event that it is a “concealed carry only” event.

He then hands the camera to a couple of ladies who film the 3.5 hour events from their truck.
What’s interesting to me is the ladies speak very clear english throughout, but then around the 3 hour 17 minute point, they drop into Russian and are speaking with each other in their native tongue for a bit.(ok, to be fair I dont know for sure it’s Russian. Could be another Eastern block language.)

    https://youtu.be/W_wHeXZ3S98

My main question is why are apparent Russian people from Boise, Idaho organizing patriotic MAGA rallies in Portland, OR?
Maybe they’re truly pationate about Trump and the MAGA movement?
Maybe I’m being unfair in characterizing these people as Russian. Maybe they were born here and just happen to speak a foreign language fluently. But does anybody else find this just a little suspicious?
Nevertheless, 2 people have now died, and I would suspect that is only going to lead to more of the same. And most of the key players aren’t even from Portland(including Antifa dickwads), yet Portland has become the stage for all of this. Sad.

I’m not surprised at all that Russians are passionate about Trump. Trump is equally passionate about Russians, especially the head man’s bumhole.

Turd, there was a GOP led Senate Intel committee report just 2 weeks ago that confirmed it.

“It is our conclusion, that the Russian intel’s assault on the the 2016 U.S. election & Trump & his associates’ participation in & enabling of this Russian activity, represents one of the single most grave counterintelligence threats to national security”

NB…where is the COLLUSION? Did Russia mess with the election? Yes. Did Trump collude with Russia? No. It even says as much in your article.

It’s why all of Trump’s “associates” were charged with unrelated crimes…nothing to do with COLLUDING.

          • 6
            6

The Trump campaign coordinated with and participated with and enabled Russia to interfere in a US election, but didn’t actually “collude” because they didn’t have a written contract saying “we agree to collude with you guys”

            No collusion!

          8

          Can I choose neither?
At least with China I can vote with my dollar. With Russia, it feels like we’re openly inviting them to take control of our government from within.

          • The Chinese have already taken over the US government by economically castrating the country. The only advantage that the US has is military power. We have and are currently giving them our natural resources (timber, steel, sand, phosphorous) and our intellectual property. Pretty soon we will have no other option but to buy from China, as is the reality for US companies trying to acquire rare earth minerals.

Don’t get me wrong, Chinese people are some of the most genuine and smartest people I know. However their technocratic leaders are far more ruthless than Putin and his oligarchs. Absolute maniacs.

At least the Russian government cares about their people (only), and have learned the horrors of losing 60 million in a large scale war. Did you know that if a male person was born in the Soviet Union between 1919 and 1924, they had a ~20% chance of seeing the year 1946? Russia has a legacy population concern as a result that put a cap on what they can blackmail the US into doing without a massive war resulting; China doesn’t. China also has the added advantage of having an engineering/computer science base that is nearly as large as the working population of the US itself; they can easily shut down the country by targeting its financial institutions and permanently keep them down.

    • My 2 & 1/2 cents. Idaho has a lot of Russian folks living there(something in the water?). And that’s all I have to say! Oh wait, there’s more, there’s a Russian gal working at one of my local gas station/mini marts. Speaks perfect English but can drop back into Russian anytime (she’s teaching me to swear). Always asking me why Americans do this or that a certain way. I’ll tell you what she is absolutely beautiful too, if only carrots was about 20yrs younger! And that’s what I know about the Russians.

  29. I just heard about the gnarly weather from the fire happening in Oregon. Hope you are all staying safe. Hopefully things will clear up soon.

    • We drive home from Lincoln City to Portland last night in it. Now that route is closed because of a fire near Otis.
Was a strange drive. Warm but very windy and the wind carried smoke from the cascades all the way to the coast, so visibility was pretty bad and trees were swaying all over. Lots of debris in the roads including a tree covering a full lane that I almost didn’t see in time. Skies here are clear now, but still windy.
No major damage around our area, just general mess you would expect from high winds over a sustained period.

    • Its snow in Colorado and western oregon is burning down. 2020 can’t end soon enough.
I wish we could post pics. I got some similar to those lincoln city ones. 11:00 am in Stayton and it looked like midnight. Absolutely crazy.

  30. My county is under a level one evacuation notice. Topped off the truck after work and made sure the toy hauler was ready to go

    • Have some friends around Mollala who were under level 1 and them 30 minutes later they got a level 3 GTFO now message. Sounds like the stretch from Woodburn to Eatacada got the evacuation call. That’s a hige area. Hope you all are staying safe. Go North if you need to get clear air. Smoke line basically starts around the Milwaukie/Portland border and is starting to blow West from here. Everything North of here is looking pretty clear.

      • Also its smokey as shit here it was almost dark out at 5 pm. Put air in my airbags on my truck to (just in case). Man what a bouncy ride! Trying to get my shit together and feel bad because I can’t go help people move their livestock.

    • I’ve been listening to the Broadcastify scanner feed to Jackson County for 4 hours. Its the 1# feed in the world right now. One of the best scanner feeds I’ve ever heard basically nonstop info. Sounds like the SO fires might be arson, pure speculation but some OSP traffic came through during the middle of the fire fighting about reports of a truck throw what looked like propane cylinders with flares attach out their window on I5.

  31. Saw oregon has had 2 of their NFL bound upper-classman opt out for the upcoming Pac12 season, should a season happen. They’re choosing to use this time to prepare for the draft instead.
Penie Sewell and Deommodore Lenoir. And they’re still waiting on decisions from a few others(Thomas Graham/Jordon Scott/Austin Faoliu)

Haven’t heard anything on the OSU front and who could make a similar decision. Seems just Hamilcar would be the most at risk to opt out. Seen him projected as high as the 2nd round. Nobody else looks to be an NFL draft target at this point.

    • Damn that was one thing that I thought could make an interesting season. I don’t have high Hope’s for OSU basketball under tinkle unless they just play better team ball without the coaches son’s.

      • 2
        1

Once Gonzaga offered, it was all over. That was his dream school and they missed on their top target so they finally offered.

Would have been a big miss if he didn’t have the zags offer. I think Arizona was the runner up.

This year will be interesting with the team makeup. Only Ethan really a legit scoring threat coming back. Everyone else will have a lot of playing time to prove themselves. If the season happens, the PAC12 is expected to be pretty strong.

    • I just got back this past Monday from a long weekend camping trip east of Glide at Rock Creek where my Sis-in-law and her husband own 160 acres of prime timber acreage. They left their beautiful new RV there with the intentions of coming back and spending more time at their campsite and so did a few of their friends. It’s all gone now except for a pavilion that somehow stayed pretty much intact. My first time camping there too and most likely, the last time. It’ll take decades for the area to recover from this devastating fire. We also drove up to Diamond Lake and rode our bikes along the lake shore. I guess Diamond Lake has fires going too. We left Monday morning so looks like the timing was just about right. What a colossal tragedy throughout the state.

      • I grew up in Glide. The first fire took out half of our former family ranch. The whole town was evacuated, and frankly missed total destruction by about one mile. Much of the area outside the town proper is wiped out. Five households of my family had to flee. Still under evac orders
There is nothing as surreal as going to bed praying your hometown will still exist in the morning…

        • I have lived in the county of douglas for 48 years, and there is something way out of the ordinary about these fires.
I’m convinced they were intentionally set, in some coordinated fashion. First, lightning did not play a roll. Secondly,
they all originated within easy road/cell reception reach. Third, notice that they all “popped up” and originated within 48 hrs, or less,
of each other? Yep, just like glide, then came talent, phoenix, ashland? Either near or within the city limits? There is no way that
a combo. of powerlines down, campfires, sparks from dragging chains, or discarded cigarettes could all occur within the same
timeframe. And BTW, these are speculated causes, because fire info. personnel, unless something new has developed, have
been silent as to the cause of any of the fires. Not even the standard, “investigators are looking into the cause”.

          • I mean it is possible they were coordinated and intentionally set but it seems more likely that they were of accidental human caused origin. A 60 mph near zero humidity hot East wind doesn’t need a whole lot for an ignition source to get whipped into a big fire real fast.

          • The main suspicious thing to me is pretty much every fire started to the east side of a populated area, so it would travel towards towns. Why werent there any fires on the west side of towns starting?

The wind is the biggest factor though. They were predicting it would be a terrible 24-48 hours for fire danger and were right. Could be some of it is foul play but some is just legitimate bad fire conditions and mother nature.

The fire near Mt Jefferson had already been burning for a few weeks. Saw it when i was driving past warm springs a few weeks ago for camping, right after a significant thunder storm. It was still burning and then the wind just made it grow like a mother fer. Not it’s nearly joining the clackamas area fire line

          • Look at the detailed spot fire maps for Portland over the last few days. Many were right in the middle of town. Chehalem mountain, hagg lake are to the west. The now santiam fire that linked up too lionhead yesterday was burning in extremly steep terrain since 8-16. The fires that burned through the santiam canyon were mostly started by several down power lines and some power line arcs that happened in several spots along hyw22. They burned uphill and joined beachie at the top of the ridges in the canyon. There is a real good chance the santiam fire will link up today with the riverside fire (Clackamas County fire) as they are only 4-5 miles from each other now (infrared makes it look about 1.5 miles).

  32. 1
    2

Maybe somebody was aware that only 1 fire, in that location and wind direction, is all that need be set.
No, these destructive fucks had a plan and executed it. These are not ecofrauds either, they wouldn’t
be in favor of the annailation of local forests just to make some point. Some FF resources were engaged in california.
Weather conditions were right. Toss in the whole covid situation, it was the right time to hatch this.

    • Whats the end game? Terrorism? For Terrorism to work, you must let it be known its Terrorism. A fire storm can easily be explained as natural, a bomb blowing up in a crowded mall isn’t natural. I have seen a shit load of reports over the last 3 days about 7 antifa members being arrested in the medford area for arson. Not one shread of evidence has been presented to make me believe its true. No arson arrests are housed in medford, eagle point, central point, ashland, grants pass, state police or Jackson County jails.
It doesn’t mean its not true, they did get a guy trying to be a fake hero for the west Eugene fire a few days ago. He started a fire and called it in then tried to put it out so he would be a hero. And another in Washington also a few days ago also. But thats it. Im siding with the arson explanation is bullshit until I see evidence to the contrary.

      • I’m pretty sure there were 7 arrests down i. The Medford area. I’m not looking g up for links but I know I’ve heard of arrests due to arson.

        • Its been more then 2 days since I’ve first started seeing that rumor and not one piece of hard evidence or article about it yet (medford fire). It maybe true but you would think some hard evidence would be out there especially since the fires now include deaths.

          • I checked every booking posted in Linn, Benton, Lane, Douglas, Jackson and Josephine Counties, no arson attests in the past week.
I’d love it to be true, I’d love to know there were arsonists and the cops caught them… but, it’s fake news.

      • There is also a Mini Cooper driving around lighting fires. They have a place number. It’s not the cause For all the fires such as the santiam canyon one.

        • 3
          1

By “they”, do you mean all of the bot looking accounts pushing the same message on twitter?
“Rural Oregon is again afraid with new Antifa danger. Claims are Antifa driving through rural areas in a black Mini Cooper starting fires.
Rural folks are banding together to keep watch, well armed watch”

Or is there an actual police report or news agency report that is claiming the same?
          Lots of disinforation out there.

          • 1
            5

Okay thanks for that NB. By they I’m mean bob and jim and sherry. Don’t be a prick. Many people are being displaced and public service workers are running out of resources. You’re right, lots of misinformation out there but from a non bot looking account there are people telling folks there is a level three evac going on so they can go in and rob them right after they leave. I never said antifa is tied to any of this. I can say there are arsons and looting going on. Mysterious fires popping up next to the roads. People are staying home because of the looting they were told about by the sheriff’s. First hand Information bud. Please take the time to research those “bot” accounts and get back to me.

          • Not being a prick. I searched on twitter for “oregon mini cooper” after you posted about it, hoping to find some news. This was verbatim the first message that came up, followed by several others with more or less the same words but in a different order. But I couldn’t find any police or news reports about the mini cooper. I genuinely wanted to know more about it but couldn’t find anything substantive, so asked where you were seeing it.

          • Apologies. Not my intention to cause friction. Just looking for something concrete. Twitter is full of garbage, especially the last 6 months.

    • Seems like every other year you hear about a wild land firefighter starting one of these to get a bunch of OT. But most of the human caused fires are just people being idiots. Not saying your theories aren’t possible, just seems unlikely.

  33. Listening to the Clackamas County fire scanner. These guys are so calm and proferssional. It’s pretty impressive to listen to them work. Wish I could somehow get out there and lend a hand. Not sure what else can be provided at this point without adding confusion to the situation. Any suggestions?

  34. Air national guard being activated to help with fires. About damn time. Maybe we can rethink forest management after this. Leaving giant slash piles and doing little forest management (Mother Nature will take care of it) is not working.

      • There’s a lot of experts on here that have no idea what actually goes on with a logging operation, particularly post harvest… Tell us more please.

        • Logging ops are the only sustainable forest practices that will work in the age of forest fire suppression. You cant have a healthy forest without one or the other.

          • Starker does a great job of growing actual forests instead of tree plantations but the coast mountains don’t have near the same fire risks. The fire that always amazes me is the Tumblebug complex fire from 2009. The private land is total scorched earth. The National Forest land got burned but big trees survived and it is actually thriving. The contrast is striking when you are in Paddy’s Valley and Chuckle Springs. Super pretty area.

  35. It’s all pretty messed up right now. My folks live in Clackamas County and they’re not in immediate danger at this point, but the level 2 boundary is creeping slowly towards their location.
Several friends who live near Canby and Mollala have already received the Level 3 “go now” alert and had to leave everything behind that didnt fit in their vehicles.
I’m at the border of clackamas, just waiting to see when Multnomah county decides to start implementing warnings. These are some pretty heavily populated areas they’re starting to evacuate. Hard to know what to do with myself, just feels helpless and hopeful those men and women on the frontlines are able to tackle it.

    • @nb I’m seeing some drop site locations being advertised down here by the canyon for supplies that can help fire fighters Such as gloves, masks, etc. There are also food trucks serving fire rescue folks. Maybe there are some things like that up there. We Venmo’d some money to the foos truck owners.

  36. If you have Facebook look up
Rebecca kuenzi. Just did a live video talking about her husband catching two guys driving a maroon Lexus trying to light a hay bail
On fire in a field next to their house. The took off driving towards silverton. Tried the same thing near Scott’s mills yesterday. Arson is happening.

    • 2
      1

FYI it was released that the police did grab those kids. They are videographers with no affiliation to ANTIFA that had camera equipment and were out taking pictures of the fire. They’ve been documenting everything going on in Portland for the last 100 + days.

The fear mongering is next level. Would be nice if people listened to Sherriff’s offices instead of spreading non-verified facebook posts. Unless the Sherriff’s are working with the Fake News Media as well…..

Some Arson has contributed in Cali and Washington (fires that were quickly extinguished). No conformation of anything in Oregon other than rumor and hearsay. There were more pallet fires started by the agitator/ass hat segment of the protests downtown and in NE, but those aren’t connect to wild fire.

      • So the ones in Scott’s mills were the same thing? Curious, if they were taking pictures/video why didn’t they Talk to the person when they were questioned? He didn’t have a gun.

Also, there were propane cans found in a field By land owners near Canby area. Why were those there?

Sure there are videographers going site seeing right now capturing footage but if you heard about the houses being robbed down here and suspicious vehicles driving around you would be suspicious too. Just wait until you have to leave your house and worry about getting robbed.

This is not my statement, but from a friend of a friend in Canby. Pretty level headed articulation to the situation at hand:

I believe the majority of false information being spread is by well intending people who are so passionate about their beliefs that they form opinions about things and THEN actively look for information that reinforces their opinion. It’s backwards! Imagine if scientists approached theories that way! Obviously, we should actively look for valid and true information and THEN form an opinion. But people are so desperate right now to validate their “side” of things, they become agenda warriors instead of truth warriors! Not everything is wrapped in conspiracy or part of a slippery sloped, ulterior motived, big picture, devious plot! Sometimes it is! But sometimes things just happen because things just happen. Today was a frustrating example for me of both sides yet again taking turns digging their feet so deep into the sand they may as well have their heads buried in it! Truth is truth, wherever it lies, regardless of personal preference. Sometimes it lies on an extreme, but often it’s somewhere in the middle. For example, many people believe Antifa is an opportunistic & dangerous extremist group with destructive & malicious intent. But this opinion is not dependent on them being responsible for contributing to the fires. Maybe they are? But maybe it was different anarchists & arsonists or mentally ill or a combination of all of it? And on the other side, just because some may be concerned about Antifa’s potential involvement possibly impacting a few people’s political slant heading into the election, that shouldn’t require getting defensive and aggressively discounting even the possibility in order to still be passionate about the right to peacefully protest against racial discrimination. Things are too often looked at through an “either or” or an “all or nothing” lens. But that’s not reality. In other words, people’s beliefs & values do not hinge on extracting validation from every single topic. If everyone sought after truth with the same passion & fervor as they do trying to score another point for “their team”, and kept an open mind instead of always being married to a position, and listened a bit more, considered other perspectives a bit more…..imagine what a different world this would be? As for the fires, I have no idea the amount or level or organization any intentional acts contributed. That’s not my main concern. I’m mostly concerned with safety and whether houses, including my own, will still be standing 48 hours from now. I agree that should be the focus and people should stop forcing agendas that distract from the main objective. But I also think some important, valid & potentially life-saving information could be discounted if it’s automatically lumped into that category. That’s when people can go too far the OTHER way and possibly miss things out of assumptions of agendas. Crazy times!! Be safe out there everyone!!

          • Cool story. Also have a friend that lives outside of Canby off the hw. He believes there are some nut jobs (who knows if they are connected to a group) doing shady stuff Backed by fa fans found infields by Markum area (previously said Canby). I never thought people would be so sick to start fires or steal from those that already might lose their house. Its reality so yeah Im going to have those thoughts. My uncle went back to his house last night because of looting down the road from Him. Too bad everyone isn’t as pure as we hope. I try to see the good in people. My thoughts formed after hearing these stories. I hope they stop if they are going on and these fires somehow slow down for the sake of everyone.

Actually they were wearing gear marked as “press,” which doesn’t really mean anything but they were taking video. Also, according to them, they did say what they were doing. ALSO, the people that stopped them DID have guns so all of that rhetoric is BS.

          https://twitter.com/R3volutionDaddy/status/1304148135288221696?s=20

Look, I’ve lived rural. I’ve had people set up picnics in my pasture. I’ve had people demand a right of way through my property unjustified. I’ve had people scope out my house at 10 at night when we were in bed with the lights off, they thought no one was home. All were met with me and a Sig 226 on my hip.

I’ve had to evacuate my house on numerous occasions because of fire threat. Fire three different years was within a mile of my home and property. Not once did I or any of my neighbors take up arms, vigilante style and decide who was allowed on public roads. These vigilante assholes are not making things better. Fuck, them.

          • 2
            3

Well with the amount of looting do you blame them? The guys who were caught yesterday coming out of santiam canyon were seen all the way up by Detroit then again in mill city all with a heavy police presents at entry points into the area. Resources are stretched thin and police are getting BS calls all over the place. Yesterday I started see posts about the Proud Boys lighting fire and looting in the beaver creek area. Its turning into a complete shit show from one end to the other.
And if I’m not mistaken those pics you posted are of guys on dead end road stopping people they don’t recognize trying to get into an area they don’t belong. I have zero problem with that. If they were doing this when there was no emergency then I would have a problem.

          • ‘Multnomah County SO

Deputies have contacted several groups of residents in Corbett who have set up checkpoints and are stopping cars. While we understand their intent is to keep the community safe, it is never legal to block a public roadway or force other citizens to stop.

This type of action increases the risk of injury to everyone at one of these roadblocks. We have had extra deputies patrolling Corbett all day and will through the rest of the weekend. Please report suspicious activity to us and do not take action yourselves.’

            https://twitter.com/MultCoSO/status/1304631505314930688?s=19

So much for following legal orders of law enforcement, I guess

      • In the future if you plan to take video footage don’t go onto someone’s property. We get out of Townera all the time wanting to stand in fields and capture photos in cover crop. They ignore trespassing signs but yet if they get shot at or harassed they will go cry.

          • Conforto will be making a lot of money for the next 5 years. Though pandemic will dent it a bit.

Likely making 10+ mil next year in arb. Then a 4-5 year deal in FA or 5 year deal buying out the last year of arb. At least 15M per year easy.

It’d be smart for him to move to a team with a park that benefits lefty hitters. Parlay that into one final big contract. Maybe the AL too with the DH so he can play all games.

  37. Good news from the east side. Smoke started rolling in at 4 am and we’re at extremely hazardous already. That’s good because it means the prevailing winds have shifted and the fires in the Valley should start blowing back on themselves.

For those of you in Central Oregon try to avoid going outside and seal up your homes. If you have spare filters or damp towels install them on the discharge side of a fan and it will help filter out the air inside. If you don’t have fans I don’t have any good news for you, as of 9 am all of the box stores were sold out in bend, you may try getting to bed bath and beyond or best buy right when they open. Costco also might have some for a minute.

    • That legislation would be meaningless from both sides of the argument. A majority of oregons private fire crews are in California at the moment under contract. There is no one to help fight fires when everyone is already fighting fires. At least Brown activated the NG yesterday, only 3 days late. They could be on the line if she would have activated them Tuesday when everything was burning down mostly away from populations.

      • 1
        1

There was no fighting the fires on Tuesday or Wednesday no matter how many people or pieces of equipment you have available. A 50 mph East wind is going to lead to a fire running its course. Only thing you can do is get people out of the way. Clearing brush and setting hose may save a few structures but short of that the crews aren’t gonna do anything meaningful.

        • The fires rolled Monday night and Tuesday. It takes 72 hours to muster the NG to full strength and move them into position. So instead of a Tuesday muster call and them getting to lines today. The call went out yesterday and Sunday they get to the lines. Right now is time to be on the attack. No new evac, slowing fire activity. They could have been cutting lines and hitting hot spots today, along with structure protection. An extra 150-200 bodies would make that much easier.

          • I wish there was a way to mob out private contractors. NG are bodies but there are plenty of companies around sitting on dozers that could get a whole lot more done.

          • The restriction they put on private fire fighting equipment is completely insane. About 5 years ago I looked at buying some water tenders with the idea of leasing them to the forest service or private team(whoever needed them really). The licensing, inspection and associated fees are crazy. You also have to upgrade almost everything to make them fire proof (I expected that). It was total not worth the hassle even if you could clear $25000 in a bad fire season.

      • It’s not about current fires it’s about forest management and future allocations. The point is to prevent this situation from happening.

        • They strictly limit salvage logging, cut fed land logging to almost nothing. Limit slash burns, and there are no more pulp mills left to take slash. Until the above is changed this will happen forever. The point is, either let it burn or try to mimic a forest fire as much as possible. Its the only way the forest can be truly healthy.
And you can thank Henry Graves and Gifford Pinchot two bureaucrats that refused to listen to boot on the ground after the Big Blowup.

          • I also am not so sure how much salvage logging helps. The lily lake fire started in what I think was a 1996 scar north of Waldo Lake that was never salvaged. It had winds behind it and didn’t spread much at all.

          • On the east side we have made some.prwtty impressive defense rings and we are constantly thinning and burning. In mountain areas we also use goats to cut out the under brush.

I feel like other parts of the state have been lax for a very long time since rain and prevailing winds keep things pretty tame. Things are gonna get hotter and dryer so preventions need to happen. These fires are going to cause billions in damage to structures and good timberland. It really should not be a partiadan issue, we need to get a forward thinking plan in place and start executing it or we will be paying for it in money and health. Idc what people call local reps to suggest they just need preassured to get shit done.

  38. I side with the representative from Grants Pass. Her plan is definitely not enough. 300,000 acres a year should be more like 3,000,000 and needs to incorporate logging. This should be a five year max plan, not 20.

Southern Oregon has swaths of forests that are ticking time bombs because of the heavy underbrush.

      • Won’t happen unless logging occurs. Logging will not occur on BLM lands unless environmental laws are changed. Environmental laws will not change so long as Democrats control Salem.

This chain has been the crux of the issue for many, many years.

          • Its that or fire. So use it or lose it.
It comes down to forests that aren’t allowed to be log and the land cleared then replanted. Much like a fire would do.

Not really. Once a timber stand reaches 20-30 years of age in western Oregon a fire won’t destroy the logs and they can be salvaged. Once a stand reaches 80-100+ years many of the trees will survive a fire. The older the stand the less underbrush there is which makes for cooler burning slower moving fires. The thing I have noticed with a lot of timber industry people is they are real smart and good at what they do but their experience is predominantly with tree farms not in forests.

          • The mill i work at runs the burnt logs every time there is a fire. They can get the logs on the cheap. Alot of them don’t have to be barked. The lumber requires hardly any kiln time to dry. Yes there is more waste cutting off the burned parts but overall it’s more profitable than running regular green logs

          • You guys realize I never said we can’t log. Why can’t we thin, log, prescriptive burn, send in goats. It’s not a this or that we need to do everything. Logging isn’t gonna do shit in a 15 year old completely cluttered forest cause no one wants useless 15 year old trees. Stop standing on a pedestal screaming you are right when there is many right answers and no reason you can’t do them all except allocation of resources.

  39. This map has proven to be pretty useful for tracking current fire activity vs fire activity that is no longer active.
Before using it, go to the Layers tab and select “fire activity” and choose “google hybrid” from the map pull down.

Yesterday, much of that yellow section around the West sude of the Clackamas fire was red(active in last 12 hours)
Orange and yellow indicate activity from 12 to 36 hours ago.
There has been a significant improvement in red areas reducing along that west line. Same with down towards Mollala, which was rapidly advancing westward yesterday.

    • That’s a good one, somewhere there is one even more detaild but I’m having trouble finding it. It took 5 minutes for it to load on my phone from wifi.

    • Should keep improving for awhile. Wind should continue blowing in the normal pattern (west to east) and getting that sweet moisture off the ocean. Might be smoking for awhile but the firefighters are gonna get it done.

  40. 19 years ago today….

Where were you when the world stopped turning on that September day?
…Did you shout out in anger
    In fear for your neighbor
Or did you just sit down and cry?

…Did you burst out with pride
For the red, white and blue
    And the heroes who died
    Just doin’ what they do?

…Did you call up your mother
And tell her you loved her?
Did you dust off that Bible at home?

…Did you lay down at night and think of tomorrow
Go out and buy you a gun?
Did you turn off that violent old movie you’re watchin’
And turn on “I Love Lucy” reruns?

Did you go to a church and hold hands with some strangers
Stand in line and give your own blood?
Did you just stay home and cling tight to your family
Thank God you had somebody to love?

Thoughts today for those who died and those left behind. God Bless America.

    • Thank you for that. We almost lost a country that day.

I do my own personal tribute to the victims and 1st responders who made the ultimate sacrifice on that terrible but
historic day. With signs and pictures in public. As freedom loving citizens in the greatest country around, we need to
      remember 9-11.

    • I dont see you, if you’re using “jockitch” as your name.
Make sure you join the “Beavrecruiting2020” group.

It’s hard to know from my side what it looks like on the user side, since I’m viewing as the Pool Manager

What is the fires were started by QAnon followers so they could spread conspiracy theories? Everyone arrested so far looks like one of these Q people so that is pretty much proof.

Bummer to see Big 12 playing and no Pac12. The Wuhan virus is now behind us according to the death rate, hospitilization rates and even cases per population rates. College football should be bringing some relief from all of the events of the past 8 months.
Prayers for everyone going through the fire evacuation and loss of home/property etc in. OR.

  43. Just a heads up, noticed a late addition to the pool, K Sund, doesnt have any pics in for today’s games. You still have time to pick a few of the games that havent started yet, to avoid having this week be a total shutout.

  44. Ugh, my brother has been infected.

Texts me to tell me about his friend in Carver, OR caught a suspected antifa guy on her property with matches in his hand, so she held the guy at gunpoint till the police arrived to apprehend him. Won’t tell me the friend’s name because “she’s been getting death threats from the antifa bros ever since”.

So I tried finding any local news about this incident, hoping to find out which friend.
Searched for “matches gunpoint” hoping to find the story.
Instead I find the same scenario played out in Mollala, OR according to someone who saw it on facebook. (Mollala is nowhere near Carver and no link)
Next person claims their friend in “Washington State” caught a guy on her property with matches and held him at gunpoint.
No actual substantiated claims. Just stories people said they saw on facebook. And there are more with the same story.

So either there are bunch of badass ladies out there catching guys with matches on their property in every community….or
people don’t know their geography….or I dont know what else to think.

  45. In positive news, helped set up a relief supply station today near the bottom of the canyon. A guy showed up to help and I didn’t recognize him from the area. Turns out he drove down from Seattle to help out after hearing about the fire. He is originally from Texas but is stationed near Seattle. He brought two cases of water and helped unload trucks for a few hours. Shout out to that guy. I wanted to buy him a meal or ask where he was staying but he took off before I noticed.

    • Is there any drop off points for supplies in bend that get trucked over? I’ve got a good amount of supplies I can spare and refurbish later. I’ve been helping people jimmy rig filters all over town for the last two days and I’m kinda out of the loop.

      • I don’t know about the bend area. United way brought out a truck and couple of local fire stations brought supplies they had collected. Maybe check with local fire stations to see if they will be sending a shipment anywhere to help.

I changed my filters today and put a towel over the exhaust for the gas fireplace we never use (nice hole on exterior wall). Any other suggestions?

        • Oh for sure. If you have any fans (box is best) use your old filters, or any new ones you can get, to build a little cardboard box around the discharge so the air is pushed through the filter. Make sure the filter surface is at least 6 inches from the fan blades to limit blow back. You can do the same thing with a wet blanket or towel, fleece works pretty well even if you don’t get it wet. You can move those around with you to sleeping areas, also much better than nothing for people who don’t have central air.

Seal up any penetrations in your house with plastic film of some sort (even garbage bags) if possible. Moving tape doesn’t work great on walls so if you can get a hold of some of the good painters tape you can make a good seal. Bathroom fans are a big leaker in any house that is negative pressure (most houses are). I have a piece of plastic I can pop on and off when the fans not on.

If you are not sure where the smoke is coming in you can use a colored smoke or thick smoke like incense around the seals around windows to see if anything leaks in. Doesn’t work great on a windy day obviously! I figure when in doubt just seal it up.

  46. Got another arsonist in dexter yesterday, started a fire in the park and 2 citizens put it out. If those who don’t know were this is, it would have been a bad one if those people didn’t get it out. Surrounded by firs and Oakland along with many homes.
    https://www.registerguard.com/story/news/2020/09/11/springfield-man-charged-starting-fire-near-dexter/5770484002/

Also a fire started just south of Brownsville well to west of the current fires raging. They are pretty sure it was also arson according to neighbor who is LCSO.
    https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=3592294620789361&id=149679131717611

    • Good thing these assholes arsonists are dumbasses. They didn’t get the “bright” idea until Wednesday or Thursday. An arsonist with foresight Monday night could have burnt a couple million acres.

  47. For anyone still paying attention to the fire progression. Check out the map that nicebeaver posted above and look at Ollalie lake and Butte right now. Its a fricken fire storm. The shading around the red asterisks is the heat intensity. The area south of the butte burned in 2010 with lots of standing burnout and lots of fuel. It’s also making a run into the north end of the B&B complex fire from 2003 right around the south end of Mt jefferson. There is a unbelievable amount of fuel in that area because its wilderness so nothing has been salvaged out of it.

    • Got another human caused start just south of the lionhead fire by Mt jefferson. Its just south and east of the mountain and started yesterday. Look on this map of that area zoomed out and you will see a small black box on the map and click on it. That area has been shut down for over a week no access because of the lionhead fire. I know that area well its mostly snowbrush and burnout from the B&B fire.
      https://maps.nwcg.gov/sa/#/%3F/%3F/44.5319/-121.7277/10.

        • All these fires are human caused. Pretty rare for a fire to be anything other than human caused without lightning. Though human caused could be power lines, train cars, campfires, dragging tow chains… or arson.

        • that area has been closed to the public for at least 10 days if not longer. There was a burn on green ridge to the east of that spot last month and im sure it was in the closer zone but cant be certain.. Im not sure if they have any authorities posted on the road or not. And fires have been no bueno for a month. It could be an arsonist or it could be some dickhead camping and not drowning out there fire they shouldn’t have had in the first place and it taking off later.

      • So much manzanita too. That is a fairly sappy plant, you get it burning with a wind and you can get some heat. I don’t think the lack of salvage logging is a big factor though, the bigger logs won’t burn through. The 1996 scar north of Waldo has a ton of dead wood and the lily lake fire didn’t grow much at all.

    • Saving that link, what a tool!

Not pleased that the fire is ripping through so brutally in that area but its good to see that the populated areas are looking much better. That area should end up better off for making regrowth if the r-eburn can clear out all that fuel right? Better this than having a bomb sitting around for next season.

      • Yes it will make it less prone to explosive fires like your seeing now. The fire headed south of Jefferson is a really good thing, that area is almost impossible to go cross country hiking in with the amount of blow down it has. It also has a ton of standing dead trees. The only bad part is it will kill one of the biggest patches of mountain huckleberry I’ve ever seen. Not kidding 500-600 acres of them and hidden right off the PCT.

          • They are 7.5 miles behind a trailhead, its a fairly easy hike with a decent water source halfway in.
Its in the middle of the B&B fire. I was surprised to find it, and whats crazier is it didn’t look like any black bears had been in any of it. Which is strange because that area has one of the highest black bear counts in the state.

          • That’s amazing. I have some native friends on the columbia that will get me about a lb a year. They have secret and ritual brambles all over. If I could have continuous access to peach huckleberry pie I would weigh 1200 lbs.

    • Check out the south flank of the Holiday Farm Fire. It appears to be advancing faster on the clear cut private timber land than the more mature national forests

      • Lots of slash still left in those cuts I’m assuming. Growth has slowed almost everywhere since the winds stopped, except now up on lionshead

        • Yeah who knows the exact reasons just found the satellite heat data to be interesting in that area when lined up to the aerial imagery and forest boundary. Topography could be a factor too.

          • It is steep stuff on the north end of the burn. I haven’t been up the mackenzie river highway in 25 years, i can’t remember what it looks like.

  48. The obenchain fire is now 30,000 acres. It has taken several homes along Butte Falls hiway and continues to push south east. At this time Shady Cove looks to be in good shape as the west side of the fire is barely moving and is better contained though they still are at a level 3. Wind is possibly going to be an issue today. They are escorting people into Talent and Phoenix that haven’t lost their homes and giving them 15 minutes to do whatever they need to do. All areas that have burnt are off limits while the investigation/recovery continues. Because of my job i was able to drive through both towns the day after, unbelievable devastation. Authorities did let people walk into the burnt areas to see if homes had made it through. People just walking down the sidewalks crying, groups of people standing together crying. Pretty rough to watch. Many mobile and manufactured home parks were destroyed and many that had little now have nothing.

    • I hope things work out for them. I remember a restaurant there that served greats steaks many years ago. I used to go hiking around the Summer Lake area when I was younger.
