  1. This is the Bowl Game for the Beavs. Go out on a high note. Need Jefferson to play and Chnace to continue the growth from last week and take care of the football. Defense needs to force a turnover or two.

  2. Have no idea who is out for ASU, but OSU has sone pretty significant players out this week. Especially on defense.
Didnt the like the matchup anyway, so now I’m even less optimistic.
    ASU 34-24

    • ASU in the past few visits to Corvallis had struggled but with so many players out for the beavs, this will be a tall order. The leading tackler in the conference, the leading and best RB in the conference if he doesn’t play, one of osu’s best receivers, etc, etc, etc. Playing ASU with our best players would still be tough to win but w/out these guys it’s really a tough ask now. I’m sure JS will have them ready to go just like he did in the civil war game but maybe someone else will step up and fill those glaring absences. Sure, every team has injuries but typically it’s not their best offensive and defensive players. I hope at least Double J is able to go at 80-90% but if not, BJ baylor is a nice backup.

    • Wright Brothers are out at CB. Jayson Grant could move to CB or they may use more reserves. Wright has been a good physical corner even though he has dropped a couple potential pics.

Think Jefferson is real key to if Beavs have a 50% chance to win. If he plays, they have enough pieces to have a real shot to finish the season on the win assuming Chance plays well and defense hangs tough. Avery Robert’s leading tackler also out as he broke his arm near his wrist last week.

        • Jefferson is currently thought to be 50% chance to play. I think he will play and will hopefully be at 85-90% of his usual self. Never know but just my hunch. Think will be good game but give Beavs about 40% chance to win. A few different guys have to step up big to finish season on a high note.

          • The best players on the team and most likely the conference offensively and defensively in terms of leading the league,in tackles before his injury.

        • Lmao. Nashon is the best CB they have by far leads the team in ints and is 3red in tackles with a sack fumble to boot. What’s with all of the hate? Rejzohn has hardly played this year so that’s just throwing out an assumption with nothing to base it off of

    • Flemings and Bradford are out. Plus Taylor who retired.

Will be curious to see if they incorporate lowe into the offense. Was a 4 star recruit in high school. Small and fast.

  4. How does the American conference end up with a Saturday 8 pm EST time slot for its Championship and Pac-12 has to play on Friday night? If these were reversed and Pac-12 played in Vegas they could get so many more fans at the game, hype and positive perception from a Saturday night main event. Larry Scott is the worst.

      • Yes, for atleast the next two years but will still be a stupid Friday game. People will just be getting off work to even watch the start of the game. Works better in Vegas where you can make a weekend of it but Saturday is miles better. Reason why SEc, B1G, Big 12 and ACC would never consider a Friday championship. Its JV. American conference took the same timeslot on Saturday that should be reserved for the Power 5 conferences. Now many think of the American as more P5 than the Pac-12. It is ridiculous how stupid and amateur this conference has been.

  5. Despite all the talk that there isn’t much at stake here, I think this game is actually pretty important to the JS narrative.

A loss gives you an undeniably worse season than last season and makes the rebuild story much harder to sell recruits. Much like the slow start in 2017 killed GA’s momentum (on the field), I think it will be difficult to turn things around going 2-6 in conference after doing better the previous year. Hard to bounce back from that psychological blow and losing some of your best offensive players.

    • 2-5 if we lose today. 3-4 if we win. But point taken. Agree is important for Smith to show team on cusp of bigger things. 3 losses in a row at home after Oregon would be deflating for the off-season. Probably slow and lessen West-side renovations also. Preferable to build when things are improving and there is genuine excitement for the program. Can get that with a win today and recruits like Damir Collins on their way.

      • This is a very unusual season so to put too much emphasis on records, I think a lot of kids realize this season isn’t a strong indication of progress of regression for any program..after all, js is only 31 games into his tenure and this season was really more of an exhibition season than anything else. This team could easily be 4-2 or 5-1 or 1-5. for that matter. The beavers were in virtually every game down to the wire….utah, Stanford, Washington….

        • All about closing out games though. You either Win or you Lose. Got to get better at Winning. Smith now has had enough time where he should be getting his team better at it. Am positive on next year but today will do alot to set the tone of this year. Successf with closing win over ASU and beating Oregon or much more deflating because you lost 3 straight at home to end and couldn’t even win 1 of 3 to close.

        • Eh I doubt recruits see it that way. Think of it this way: if we had won the division, would we be saying people won’t put too much stock in records this year?

    • I’m not saying to try to lose but with the eligibility rules and newer redshirt rules I think getting experience for some of the promising young guys to have real game experience to analyze and digest through the off season might be almost as close to as valuable as the win.

  6. Wazzu killing Utah and playing with their hair on fire. Forcing turnovers. Up 28-7. Impressed with how strongly they came ready to play. Game on FS1.

Let’s show those ten million plus Chinese watching the game today on Tencent streaming what the Oregon State Beavers are about. They are watching to see Jackson He who became first Chinese national to score in FBS. Great chance for Beavs to form an identity of aggressive play and being winners if they can beat ASU. Beavs are America’s team today. Got to be the better team.

    • This roster appears to be solid and if they can get the bats going,, it could be a fun season…i like the pitching staff and you know this team will be solid defensively. Hopefully, they get all their games in.

  8. I’ll stop engaging our resident troll after this but I’m thinking over his question of if OSU got 2nd in the North but won the title game we’d seriously be hearing from Duck fans about the asterisks for like a decade or more. And Beav fans would probably be like “put an asterisk next to that championship, luck o da Beavs”

    • Exactly….spot on….he epitomizes hypocrisy. always has and always will. The entire season has an asterisk attached to it. For gosh sakes, on TV right now is Utah 2-2 and WSU 1-2 and that’s their final game of the season. The entire season including the beavers win over Oregon was nothing more than exhibition games.

Hard to believe you’re still crying. Lmao. So disingenuous too. Everyone know beaver fans would be wearing their black and orange today and buying out Walmart if they had been the Pac12 Champs. But alas, no. 2020 has been bad to osewe. Ducks are your 2020 Pac 12 Champs, men’s hoops just torched Portland by 39 (you remember them right) and beav women just lost to a Pac12 bottom feeder. Wheels are falling off in Cornvalley. Oh my

Swammidouche. You can’t just keep beating the same team every year. Ever taken and statistics and probability class? Flip a coin 12 times and it won’t come up heads 12 times. I guarantee it. The biebers will win one occasionally but I like the odds of them not. Look at the history against nearly every team in the Pac12 if not all of them. Do they lead in a series against any team? They don’t belong in the Pac12

      • 1
        1

We will just go ahead and add an asterisk to the beav baseball title where the poor Arkansas kid dropped a pop up a 5th grader catches every day. Essentially handed the trophy to them. It certainly wasn’t earned. Jimmy Lake disagrees with you about who should be Champions. Asterisks are for the have-nots to whine about. This is sports

        • This is similar to the beav whiners who try to discredit the multiple track and field titles as if those people aren’t somehow athletes. Ridiculous and loser logic. Lmao

        • This isn’t the same thing. You mention ridiculous and loser logic, but then you bring up an illogical comparison.

Reason it’s not the same is the Beavs had the best winning % in their conference when they won that title, and an opponent dropping a ball isn’t the same as covid shortening the season (i.e. incomplete sample and no chance for the law of averages to play out).

Totally different. If you feel good roll with it. I’m not acknowledging this one, though, and I have no problem acknowledging the Ducks.

          • Then acknowledge that they played well last night and their defense was outstanding instead of trying to discredit them. The game was won on the field. Everyone was in the same Covid situation. Some teams handled it better and were more regimented in their approach as Cristobal mentioned last night. Maybe Lake and his staff weren’t? Good luck, bad luck. Who knows

          • I didn’t watch a second of the game, so I can’t say if they played well. Will take your word.

But to the larger point, I’m putting the * on this because I don’t think a team should be 2nd in the North and get into that game. At that point it was illegitimate to me.

          • In a normal I totally agree. But you react to the situation you’re given. The athletes put in the time, do the work. It’s not their fault

          • Washington/Cal should have made up their game. Whatever the Pac had to do to make the title legit they should have done, but having Washington sitting above Oregon with a better win % and then not getting to that game just looks awful.

If Oregon won after all that, then good for them. But as it went it doesn’t sit right with me. Again, if it does with you, then enjoy it.

This is a huge get. Player who many thought could have been one of the more talented freshman at Georgia. Win today and I am feeling pretty great about team’s chances to make strides next season.

    • Dad is Reggie Tongue, former OSU safety under Pettibone. Wasn’t surprised that his kid went SEC seeing as they live in Louisiana and he’s very talented. Am extremely surprised that he’s transferring to OSU. Massive pickup.

      • We Corp is going to be outstanding next year. Harrison is a stud, Beason is going to be great. Add tongue and than might have Bradford back, flemings…

Offensive weapons with Harrison, Tongue, Beason at wr. Te both back, Jefferson (maybe) Baylor, plus we should be seeing Lowe next year.

Depth at qb with Nolan and Gebbia back. All online back – maybe lose Eldridge if he decides to move on?- but offensively this team is going to be really really good next year and have depth too

        • Lindsey could be back too. When he has been in this year, he has made an impact and connects well with Chance. Who will be the qb next year? With Gebbias injury I could see both starters from this year sticking around until a starter is named for Fall.

  9. PHIL STEELE REPORT:

Last year on senior day for Oregon State, Jake Luton threw for 288 yards & 4 TD. RB Benjamin had 312 yards vs Oregon State in 2018 but 70 here. Oregon State got a TD with :33 left in the half to lead 28-21 & led 35-21 late 3Q. Down 35-28 Arizona State fumbled at Oregon State’s 1 with 10:14 left then went 90/11 for a TD with 1:40 left but went for the win and the 2 point conversion was no good. Oregon State on 4th & 2 at Arizona State’s 44 with :42 left got a pass interference first down and Oregon State got the upset 35-34 (+2). The home team is 7-1 SU but just 3-4 ATS in the series. Oregon State is a scrappy team that got back RB Jermar Jefferson last week after he missed the Utah game. Stanford was still homeless and practiced in Corvallis all week and was without WR’s Wilson and Wedington. Oregon State led 14-9 at halftime, and 21-16 after 3Q. Stanford went 90/13 for a TD, Oregon State drove 67/13 for a 26 yard FG to make it 24-24 with 7:18 left, Stanford drove 62/10 for a 39 yard FG to retake the lead 27-24 with 1:48 remaining. Oregon State drove 49/9 and on 2&10 Nolan ran 11 yards to Stanford’s 16 but fumbled with :13 left. (Oregon State 458-408 yard edge). A lot has been made that Oregon State is down to its backup QB but Chance Nolan has a 4-1 ratio while Tristan Gebbia only had a 3-3 ratio in two more starts. Oregon State already upset Cal and Oregon at home this year and in their last 3 losses had the ball down by 6 or 3 at the end with a chance to win. Arizona State lost to USC giving up two late scores then had 3 games postponed and were rusty in a loss to UCLA. Last week Arizona State got a Taylor 105 yard KR TD to open then after a fumble got a TD and led 14-0 :56 into the game with 4 yards of offense. Arizona State was +7 in TO’s and at halftime led 42-7 despite Arizona having a 260-241 yard edge (14-7 FD) with Arizona also being stopped on downs twice! Arizona State won it 70-7. While my computer has Arizona State by 5 it has Oregon State with a 408-389 yard edge! Arizona State is just 2-7 ATS as a favorite the last 2 years playing a lot of close games and the Beavers are on a 9-2 ATS run as a dog with 5 outright upsets. Last week’s results give us line value here and I will side with the scrappy home dog to pull the upset.

Looks like the Beavs are becoming the sloppy seconds of football transfers.

But seriously, Beavs have been and should continue to be beneficiaries of the transfer portal especially if players are given a one time transfer waiver. With the program in its current state, the Beavs won’t be landing top guys in the near future. Just can’t keep up in the arms race but JS has shown this is a good place for second opportunities.

Gebbia, Roberts, Eldridge, Kipper, Harrison, Lindsey all have come in and at least have been average to above average players.

The recruiting strategy should result in no more low hanging fruit and few if any JC transfers. Fill positions of immediate need with FBS transfers. Those guys will have much more upside and few if any will be academic casualties. This route raises the floor of the recruits coming in and hopefully leads to better on field results.

    • The game experience could be good. This would be a money loser, right? I can’t imagine most of these bowl games will be profitable with no crowds.

        • Probably but in 2 weeks everyone will be immune from antibodies. It will be the Herd Immunity Bowl brought to you by Pfizer and Moderna.

          • If Beavs beat ASU tonight, teh Pac-12 won’t have 3 bowl eligible teams total that haven’t declined a bid. So only way to fill that Armed Services Bowl for Pac-12 would be with a waiver. Get reasons not to do it, as kinda CBI like to be a losing team and go, but Colorado would now go to Alamo Bowl and Armed Services bowl is yet to be decided who will play. Hopefully won’t be cancelled.

  11. Kill some time before kickoff with the latest episode of The Payton Years, the only podcast in existence dedicated solely to Oregon State men’s basketball. This week Sam and Andy discuss an unimpressive win over Texas-San Antonio, the news of Xzavier Malone-Key’s transfer from Farleigh-Dickinson, and take a look at where the Beavs stand in the latest KenPom rankings. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-payton-years/id1536831436?i=1000502880461 (Note: The news of the removal of Santa Clara from the schedule was announced just minutes after the episode’s release, so that is briefly discussed as well).

  12. Tongue scouting report on 247 makes him sound like a good athlete destined for defense that wants to play WR instead. “More quick than fast…good ball skills would translate well to defense…thick enough to play safety and possibly grow into LB.”

  13. San Jose State with a convincing win to clinch the Mountain West.

Wardaddy Anderpants is shittin himself watching his assistants beat BSU (which he’s never done)

49-31 asu. This game will see if Beavs are really growing as a program. I’m not convinced we have the depth to deal with who’s out. If Nolan can take another step and Jefferson plays a close to 100%, we have a chance but that’s a long shot. Regardless, I’m not sure we’ll get off the field much

  15. The Rose bowl game has been moved to Arlington, Tx per ESPN. They had asked the local health to allow fans in the stands but were turned down. They will allow fans in Arlington.

  16. 1
    2

Hey nice called Lindsey. I’m sure people will still pretend he sucks since I like him and he’s producing.

Called out Smith game 1 for playing chumps over him.

  17. Beavs defense is so bad. No qb pressure. Can’t cover anyone. Tackling has been an issue for years and hasn’t gotten better. Offense definitely struggling. And special teams just made another dumb penalty on the punt…loomkng like a jv squad. Wtf.

  18. So this season went from awful to promising to awful. 2-5…yuck.
Maybe a little progress overall but totally unable to play a full game in all facets, finish games, come back, string together winning streaks, etc.

  19. This is getting tougher in fans to stay upbeat. Snith’s record is not good for P5 even with some progress over last couple years. Besides Oregon, game itself, could call this season mild regression. Hope they start playing better as all games have been close this year. Let’s atlesy maintain that trend and not revert to being OK with losing by 14+ points.

Expected crisper play from OSU tonight and hope they can start to turn it around here quick. Looking like pretty poor football out there so far.

  20. 2
    1

This team has not improved much from last season. They have lost several close games in both years! This is a complete sloppy overall showing! That last TD by ASU was an obvious Sudden Change situation (where ASU was going to take a shot) and I’m not sure what the hell the Beavs we’re running there but they had a single safety and they were running zone. That shouldn’t happen, EVER!

    *SP Teams is shit!
    *Mental errors in all phases!
    * Lindsay is Bolden 2.0!! Drops, can’t make the first person miss, straight line speed only!

You can sugar coat this shit however you want but the Beavs are the worst team in this terrible league!

    Go Beavs!

  21. As poorly as OSU had played with the two TOs resulting in gifting ASU 12 points and all of the penalties, they’re still in the game for now but injuries continue to pile up.

  22. Lindsey needs to be benched. So soft and goes down at the smell of a defender. Let alone not getting out of bounds when you need it. Seriously, how was that guy a 4-star?

    • Even with Lindsey’s stupid play, why wouldn’t Smith call a timeout and take a shot downfield? 30 seconds is plenty of time in college football. FG makes it a one-score game. Consider all of his “gambling” that sequence seemed oddly conservative. Very Riley-espque to take a timeout with you into halftime.

      • Agree, was shocked they didn’t try to do more. I do think Smith was nervous to give ASU a shot at a field goal of their own and really didn’t want to punt. Still if Lindsey goes out of bounds you have more time, but even if he doesn’t you could take it down to 22 seconds or whatever amount you want and then try a 3rd down pass to pick up first down. Then you have 17 seconds or whatever for a couple of throws to get into FG position.

  23. Nolan has played well. Lindsey is a mess today… why isn’t Harrison playing more? He is by far our best receiver right now.

Overall ugly half, but 11 points with the ball after half is not as bad as it seemed

  24. Watching game with wife playing animal crossing game next to me and she says out loud “oh I caught a football fish.” To which I responded you catch better then Oregon State University.

      • True- he didn’t help at all, but the two PI calls in the endzone on 3rd down were real momentum killers, too. If we could have kept them to field goals or stopped them on 4th down, it might have been a differnent story. Not real happy how this season went at all, probably would have ended up 4-8 if all games had been played. It is hard to get mad at the QB when the supporting cast other than JJ and a couple of others is not really good or up to par with the other teams in the PAC.

  25. Heavy dose of Jefferson and Harrison, with a few Nolan scrambles and hopefully steady play from other receivers when ball thrown their way is only chance we have to come back.

  26. 1
    1

Nolan has to understand when he throws downfield, he needs to step into the throw to get velocity on it. The ball went the distance he wanted but it floated allowing for the pick.

  27. Surprised Jefferson not doing so well with ball security tonight. Knee looks like it might have been down but they may not reverse call.

  28. Another TO leafs to another score. Yikes on the poor attempts to tackle. Still think it was bad play calling in the last pick. Beavers got greedy when they didn’t need to. Keep making mistakes and ASU will win going away. I still like Nolan’s game and he’ll get better with more time.

  29. I wonder if the Beavs will take a bowl invite? They haven’t said no and the pac12 may need to fill spots. Even with a turd of a team right now, couldn’t hurt in terms of experience.

    • Not so sure I want to see this team on a national stage, haven’t we all has enough aggravation for one season…. besides, we need to keep all the recruits we currently have in the fold.

  30. I guess Colletto and his ability to pick upbshort yardage is just not very effective. Again, I don’t understand some of the play calling.

  31. 1
    2

Smith is definitely starting to look like Riley! We’ll see after this season! If he keeps all of this staff (especially DC and SPC), then very Riley-esque!

    Go Beavs!

  32. Not sure about Tibs. Will Smith’s record be 9-22 after this? Hard to win if our defense isn’t more stout. Our offense only gest so good at our best and just tough to win a very high percentage if our defense isn’t more stout.

  33. 1
    1

Is Tibs the problem, or our lack of talent on D, particularly DL? Both?

Who would be some realistic candidates to replace Tibs?

    • 2
      1

Seems like bad technique in terms of pursuit and taking angles.

Utah is able to consistently coach up 2 and 3 star recruits to be at least solid tacklers.

    • Both! Talent is a problem all around though! You should NEVER have a single deep safety and play zone underneath with no other deep defenders for one! For two, the lack of “contain” is very concerning to say the least!

      Go Beavs!

  34. 2
    2

2-5. SMH! And if you look at the Oregon game, there were a lot of self inflicted (Oregon) wound there. I keep hearing “well a lot of these guys are returning next season”! Well guess what, so are the guys for every other team in the PAC 12! And when you’re last place, not a great claim! BTW, I think J2 is gone! He should be concerned though. NFL defenders will attack that ball (tackling the football) a hell of a lot more aggressively than D1 collegiate players!

Smith should definitely be scrutinized though. This is not a good season by any stretch!

    Go Beavs!

  35. Wanted to see Colletto do his hammer run again and they try to get cute. Not the Beavs strength on 2 point conversions. Either hammer Colletto or realize our odds of converting are under 15%.

  36. Probably give Tibs another year since was a weird year. But I would start looking around and thinking about it if I was Smith. Best to be prepared and always should be thinking to yourself about various scenarios so you are prepared and not winging it.

Cory Hall maybe. Anyone out there with NFL defensive experience like ASU has in Marvin Lewis? Who is the San Jose State DC?

    • He did have a nice throw on the 4th down fake to the TE, but besides that he is dropping way more passes then he is catching. Most should have been easy catches.

  37. Beaver analysis 2020:
*Inferior talent on the field at most positions
*Coaching lacks in; game management, common sense (chasing points) and individual position techniques
*Schemes are flawed (especially on defense): you can’t have zero pass rush contain or run contain and expect to win football games
*Special teams lacks talent, scheme and execution

2021- Bringing in 8 recruits (or whatever the recruiting class is) is doubtful to make up for the major lack of inspiration/talent that is currently lacking on this roster! Any improvements made, will also be made be all 11 teams that finished ahead of this team in 2020! Tough to see a good season next season either!

    Go Beavs!

    • 2
      1

This staff does chase points too early. Has worked once and not worked 9 or 10 times so doesn’t appear to be a good strategy. Hurting them more than helping them. They would have more confidence if they scored TDs and 98 ercent of the tie. That meant they were getting 7 points. Games are a marathon, not a race. Dave the two point conversions for the 4th quarter when you really need them. Erickson dodn’t coach like this. We would run and be patient in 4th down cause he realized even 7-10 minutes was still a pretty good amount of time left in the game in 4th quarters.

  38. 3
    1

I think Nolan hasn’t had a bad game outside a couple new guy bad decisions. But he has no supporting cast tonight. JJ doesn’t look 100% and Lindsey 4 drops, Beason has had a couple, and I believe a couple more. Not the way to end the season.

    • Agreed as I posted earlier that JJ looked a step slow. I think he returns next year. Nolan has played well enough but way too many front line players are out especially on defense.

        • Are you asking me? Mechanically? Win/loss? Only Beaver opponents? Sometimes (and this qualifies) a guy looks a hell of a lot better against a majorly inferior defense (ie: Beavs Defense!). ASU is was 1-2, don’t forget that!

          Go Beavs!

        • Me?

There are 2 argueably. Admittedly I’d say Daniels is the best, but I don’t think he is elite by any means. I’d say the given is Slovis, although as I mentioned I think Daniels is better. The wildcard is the wsu freshman. I don’t recall his name st Charles or something… but I do think that kid showed he is going to be a pain for any team the next 4 years.

That and although Arizona sucked the qb has the highest nfl potential. He will never win any awards but I think he is a Nick Foles esc type player

  39. Beavs have had multiple games this year where on scoring two consecutive TDs they only ended up with 12 points because they failed.on both two point conversions. What is their actually 4th down conversion success rate this year? 25% I would say at best. No way is this approach giving them the best odds to win games when their conversion rate at them is probably lowest in the conference.

      2

None of the strategy there makes sense. He went for 2 early in the game to be down by 11 instead of 12 lol! That makes no fucking sense. It’s like he’s consulting tea leaves or some other random, meaningless consult. Extremely questionable decision making.

      Go Beavs!

  40. 2

Not a good look for Smith. Not a good showing at home to finish the year. Won’t help recruiting. Won’t help confidence. Announcers have been saying for 3 years now “I think this program is heading in the right direction”. The obligatory “we feel sorry for them” statement. Year after year, same old shit. Lmao

  41. Gulbranson had a dropped ball by Harrison that could have been a TD with about 12 seconds left or so, but then on final play of game with no time left Beason was able to tale a corner floater out of the hands of ASU defense and finish the game with a TD. A mild note of positivity that I think actually has some importance cause team had their worst outing of the season.

  42. One Old Beav where you at? You’re one of the few on here I actually enjoy reading their posts!

What do you think about this season? Do we give Smith a “free pass” and just say that this was all meaningless? Or other? Is the Great J Smith reminding you at all of M Riley? Or do you think he is unique?

    Go Beavs!

    • Smith already has his free pass. He’s safe as long as Barnes is AD, much like Riley was always safe with BDC running the show. no accountability.

I think the big let down for me was how the defense did not improve when that was all the talk before the season. The lack of sacks, pressure, and TFL’s was Anderpants like and puzzling. The team speed on defense needs to improve and also depth. Without Roberts, they were a mess tonight.

    • that was the worst on field performance since UW blew them out back in 2013 or thereabouts. Even Riley was exercised about that “deal”

  44. Arizona State opted out of any bowl invites.
Pac12 teams not wanting to draw the short straw to bring a small amount of extra revenue in for the conference.
Merry xmas oregon. Thanks for sharing that Fiesta Bowl $ with everybody.

Angrybeavs is the only thing the kid has going on in his life. He’s the equivalent of the village idiot but has yet to realize he’s ion the wrong village. I suppose that’s bc even his own village has disowned him..Hes got nowhere else to land and he knows it. People lacking social acumen and self awareness are completely ignorant of their poor and inappropriate behavior and that is what motivates this kid. He’s searching for validation and acceptance in the only way he can get it….being rude and obnoxious. I feel kind of bad for the kid bc he obviously has serious issues that remain unresolved. Angrybeavs is his therapy and without it his life lacks meaning and purpose. He’s just ask harmless and helpless soul that seeks attention….good or bad it makes no difference. He’s like the stray dog you find on the street….afraid and alone….so let’s be compassionate and offer him some hope and throw him an occasional bone.

You waste so many letters on me yet sound so dumb. I think it’s your life’s calling. Must be a Biden supporter I assume. Demented sheep mentality. I don’t post anything that isn’t true. You just can’t handle the truth. That’s a you problem. Probably should have thought of that the decade of years you were flaming on the Duck side of Olive with your constant passive aggressive jabs and disparaging remarks towards players, coaches and fans. You orchestrated this. Now you’ll deal with it. Or don’t. I don’t really give two fucks about your whiny posts. Lmao

        • And yet you spend your time reading each and every post I make. It sounds like I’ve angered and frustrated you as well.. You couldn’t care two effs abouty comments but here you are day I’m and day out slobbering all over yourself as usual with your boorish and juvenile comments…You’te a stalker so consumed by everything beavers that you allow it to control your life. Seek some professional help and counseling. As you can see by several of the comments below, you’re not welcomed here but yet you persist…a glutton for punishment is I suppose. What will you do now that Angry has exposed you for the fraud that you are as Beaversblow and the Turdman which I already knew anyway. It sounds like you’re on thin ice again on this site and your dreams are once again on the verge of being shattered by being banned…some people never learn and you’re the perfect example. 41-38 Sally…..you’ve been owned again!

I literally stop reading your posts after the first sentence because they are all the same. Bahahaha. Enjoy your 2-5 record, yet another losing season, your embarrassing men’s and women’s basketball programs and no baseball season. Hopefully the PAC’s best RB when healthy (CJ Verdell) will get to play in a bowl game. Don’t forget to watch! We know you will. He didn’t play much against ospew, only one or two carries against Cal and didn’t play at all against 5-0 USC. Turns out they didn’t need him. 2020 Pac 12 Champions figure out how to get things done. Best defender in the conference and future top 10 pick saw to that. Kayvon the beast!!

    Postmortem for football:
Year three is supposed to be “win close.” We lost close.
Smith is overcompensating for shortcomings with his team and his own psyche. His aggressive “go for it” mentality is based on a lack of confidence.
That ultimately affects your team. Opposite of what Kelly did at Oregon.
The go for two early is a manifestation of that. Beyond that it is stupid mathematically.
Ultimately, this team does not have the quality depth to withstand any significant injuries.
Tibs is trying to play a style of D without the horses to do it. That is a sign of a average to bad coach. Great coaches adapt to their players.
We don’t have the huge DL guys to eat up blocks and let the LB’s make plays.
The frosh QB last night has a great arm.
The Civil War win is the only thing keeping the season from being an unmitigated disaster.

    • In short, we’re a year behind. No?

If we’re not winning close games next year it’s time to talk Smith firing. The thing is, we should have a handful more wins. Smith has cost us at least five games. So I’m not sure how to factor that in. Ideally he’d have learned from the first blunder. But he didn’t, so now we’re stuck with this catch-22 where he’s the guy getting us to the precipice of winning close games, and he’s the same guy blowing those opportunities with bad management.

      • Being a Beaver “legend” he is good for at least 2 more years given the strangeness of this season. He beats the zero’s again in one of those 2 years then you can figure 3 more.

        • 1
          1

That’s true. Covid probably makes this year a mulligan.
I’ll be ready to pick up the “fire” chants if he’s this bad at in-game management next year. Hopefully he reads some books on probability in the off season.

        • 1
          4

That is such flawed logic but so beaverish. Beat a young Ducks team and he sticks around two more years. If you can’t see that THAT is the whole problem with beaver football you absolutely deserve the same misery year after year. Sumlin just got fired after 9-20 and I guarantee they will be better than osu next year.

      • the team made a little progress, on what I would call the grit and determination front (which is institutional culture), and was steady on the offensive play calling front. D did not improve. No horses on the line and at DB

      • To me, this team/players need to learn how to win. That was the problem with the last multi-decade losing streak; the players were so used to losing, they didn’t know any different. It took Dennis Erickson and guys like Smith, Simonton, TJH, Chad Johnson, etc. to come in and stop the bleeding and injhect a new attitude into the team. Winning is infectious; i think we are all tired of the ‘moral’ victories where ‘we should of or could of won if it hadn’t been for X or if X had occurred’. The Beavs need someone to step up and say this crap stops now, no more. I have to say though, even Smith’s body language on the sideline is tough to interpret; does he ever show any emotion or get fired up? Watch the ACC or SEC coaches, they are always jumping around and getting excited. Even Sabin will get on a coordinator if he F’s up – yesterday was a prime example when Florida gashed Alabama on a drive for a TD and Sabin bent down and ‘talked’ with the DC and probably asked what the F just happened! Except for that damn chainsaw, not much coming off the sidelines of this Beaver team and that needs to change.

        • Yes, exactly. This may be why we always play better in the second half. The team just doesn’t seem motivated or inspired. It takes being down 17 points to kick them in the pants.

          JS may be too mild-mannered.

    • The offense is good enough for us to be where we want to be at this point in JS’s tenure. The defense is not. Defense has a talent issue and probably coaching issues.

DL talent is obviously not where the coaches want it to be, as evidenced by the string of JC guys that we missed on and didn’t effectively backfill (Moore, Lemon). DB talent is obviously not where it needs to be based on game performance. Grant made some impact plays, but no one else really did.

      • Agree, DL and DBs are biggest concerns this offseason. Sounds like Grant will be back for his 2nd senior year, thankfully. Not sure what was up with Morris this season. Cant seem to get fully healthy.

Did anybody else notice that Moore ended up signing with Marshall this week? Wonder what happened to cause him to leave? Seems like a situation where the coaches must have removed him from the team.

On offense, i thought Overman and Gulbranson both showed some ability. Overman actually caught his passes. If he has good hands, I dont see how they cant play him. Musgrave and TQ dropped quite a few balls this year.
Gulbranson has the best arm in the QB room. He just made most of his passes look so much more precise in his short time on the field.

      • I’m leaning toward thinking the secondary problems are more coaching than anything. It’s not a lack of athleticism, so it’s either technique or schemes.

Jonathan Smith tries low percentage plays with a group of low football IQ players, which further reduces the percentage. It appears more desperate than aggressive. We need a veteran coach to st him down and talk some sense into him.

    • That’s exactly how I see it, too. It’s weird because he emphasized recruiting smart players.

For whatever reason, the Beav players always seem to play with anxiety and tension, and opponents always seem loose. Still think we need a full-time psychologist on the staff.

      • 1
        1

Did you see the replay on the blocked punt? The Beav linemen were in bizarre positions, allowing inside leverage. Would a smart punter call timeout there? Chance made a savvy play on the trick double-pass by not passing it again, but then what the hell was he looking at on his interception? The double coverage was not even disguised.

    • 6

I love JS to death and will always be appreciative of what he did for the program, but in reality, he proibably needed 5 or more as a coordinator and a head coaching job at a lower tier D2 or D1 team just to get his feet wet. He was thrown into the fire here and was expected to perform miracles after the program had been decimated by Andersen. The last thing this team needed was to hire a coach and have him ‘learn’ OTJ. I’m not certain that this team has the ability to ‘coach up’ the 1-2 and occasional 3 star players we get, which was Riley’s forte’. Would love to se a winnning season again before I leave this earth, but not certain it will happen again. It may be just enough to know that I got to see and attend some of the best games in the programs history during the ’00’s.

  48. 1
    2

Something I noticed late in the game, as a play was in progress, was how much bigger the ASU players seemed to be compared to the Beavs. I think it was our offense on the field at the time. Made me wonder if that was a factor in our losses.

    • Our Line really isn’t undersized. Pretty average. Backs are a good size. Our wideouts are not very big but TE are average. Defense is super undersized on the line. We also pine up EDGE LB against linemen which makes it look worse. Our starting DBs are quite large.

        • Speaking of DBs, there’s a speedy grad transfer CB from Kansas I’m keeping an eye on. Kyle Mayberry. He also has a brother who plays DB at Kansas.
I know grad transfer CB doesn’t appear to be a huge need right now, but I keep seeing his name pop up, so my gut tells me we are trying to land him.

      2

There may be something to the players being bigger, but considering the color schemes of the UNIs. White makes you fat and black is supposed make you look skinny….correct? Maybe the contrast between the two colors exaggerated the waistlines a bit.

I think it’s time for “Swammiturd” and his gang to go dark for awhile. I like how after the Civil War win, he didn’t post for a week, but soon after the Beav loss, he was back. I know Angry is patient and anti-censorship, but he also doesn’t put up with IP address shenanigans either.

Angry already banned this douche bag last March or April. In response, the kid who claims to be a coach for a girl’s basketball team and a former ducks basketball player, saved up enough cash in the past nine months to buy a new device with a new IP address and then registered with multiple New user accounts. Now Angry has exposed him although I already knew he was BB and Turdman….now he’s on the verge of being banished yet again…some people never learn. Angry will probably terminate this douche bag again and rightfully so. Once a douche bag, balways a douche bag is his motto.

What’s odd is Atomos generally has reasonable posts about the Beavs, although he is a bit loony with his Alt-right crap. This could imply some type of mental disability that would lead someone to create three accounts, and accounts as a Duck and Beav.

          • Maybe that is part of the act, the Duck trolls tales are over the top dumb sometimes, maybe it is more a parody of an over the top Duck fan? Like the comparison of a 3-2 2nd place Duck team winning a P12 title to a 8-1 CMac led Stanford that happened to lose to the Ducks in the regular season is still making me scratch my head.

It’s Luck O’ the Beavs that this guy can’t find solace in a Duck site. There probably aren’t any that offer healthy critique, just more delusion regarding national championships.

          • Ean, you remember this kid from the other site that shutdown last January. His problem is he’s the joke and punch line and hasn’t figured that out after all of these years. It’s kind of sad IMO. i’m not sure why a duck fan would want to spend time on a beaver blog anyway. He’s a glutton for punishment I guess.

My posts are reasonable about the Beavs too. Haven’t said a single word that isn’t true about the coach, players and program in general. That’s as reasonable and truthful as it gets. Unfortunately, in this new snowflake world we live in, the truth doesn’t want to be heard by most. It upsets them

      • They all could be using the same brand of VPN and be in similar locations which would put them all on the same server. Although I am sure swammiturd and Beavsblow are the same guy who lives in his moms basement.

  49. Our problems on defense are the DL. A 3-4 will not work if the line can’t consistently tie up 4 blockers. IDK if it’s a different story with wshippen and reichner playing this year. We need talent or size not heart.

    • 5
      1

Even my 14-year-old budding linebacker said they don’t have the personnel to run a 3-4. Yes, they need a strong, space-eating NT, but I thought the linebackers looked a step slow all year. Lots of tackles, but five yards down the field. Something is wrong with Rashad too.

      • 1
        1

For 3-4 to work you either need freak athletes or a bare minimum of 900 lbs on the line. We only have 5 players on the roster that are close to the right size. I think what they are going for is 6’3+ at DE and 6’0-6’2 at DT. This may show in the recruiting too. They may be recruiting DE who they want to convert into aggressive DTs much like Wisconsin/Iowa converts big framed TE into Olinemen. If it works its a good way to avoid some of these crazy recruiting battles.

        DE (280-315): Shippen (287), Sandberg (278)
        DT(295-340): Whittley (358), Bennett (296), Skelton (290)

I am also not sure where Reichner (6’1-271) will line up. He is pretty short for DE in our system.

So far at DE Smith has favored big frames: Lolohea (6’3-250), Hennessy (6’5-263), Stover (6’6-249), Dawkins (6’5-267), Briski (6’3-265) and transfers , Shippen and Sandberg. Outside of the last two all of them need to put on 20-30 lbs to really be effective at DE in a 3-4.

At DT he has favored short guys with lower centers of gravity but not really enough size: Hodgins (6’0-265), Rawls (6’2-268), Bennett (6’1-296) and Whittley as a Transfer. My gut says Reichner also plays DT in this system due to wanting length on the edges.

In the 2021 class we have one DL Fa’amoe who is listed at 6’2-255 and could really go either way depending on what his body does.

IN 2022 we are targeting 9 DL so far and all of them are over 6’2. 3 are 240 lbs or less. 3 are 240-260, 1 is 270 and 1 is 295 (4 star DT so don’t hold your breath). The only way this makes any sense is if they are thinking long term. Fill in with transfers and hope that some of these guys can develop into tall 300 lb monsters by year 3-4 in the program. Its obvious that they are focusing on length and agility over size which is fine if you have the time to add the weight and their frames can support it.

If I go with that theory its mostly bad. Comparing 1st year stats to 2020 here is the weight changes [NOTE: second number is the number of seasons in the program]. Hodgins (+0#, 3), Briski (+33#, 3), Reichner (+1#,3), Dawkins (-20#, 3), Sandberg (+7#, 2), Rawls (+5#, 2), Hennessy (-12#, 2), Bennett (+24#, 2), Stover (+24#, 2).

So It looks to me like the tall guys are mostly losing weight and the short guys mostly gain weight. Either way we are very light.

        • Hodgins plays DE and said he lost weight to better rush the passer. This says to me as well as with the recruiting that they don’t think they need big monsters on the line. So far I think that has really hurt the team. Although I will say they have looked stout up the middle in short yardage situations. Off tackle is where they got killed consistently.

Hennessy and Dawkins are strange in that they’ve lost weight. I was really counting on those guys developing their bodies. That is probably from a bullshit measurement from when they were being recruited but IDK.

It’s strange but I don’t remember seeing shippen play at all. Did any of you guys? In camp he was supposedly playing well. Opt out?

Would having reichner and Whitley have helped? I would say most definitely. I think not having Whitley really hurt this team. He used to be able to push the center back and force the qb out and then there was Rashed. That’s why this staff’s recruiting is puzzling.

          • I think Whitley was intended as a plug & play for Elu Aydon on 1st-2nd downs, who graduated last year.

Did the Beavers even line up base 3-4 much this season? Or was it mostly 2-5-5?

    • Agree the D line size seems like a major issue, and one not clearly addressed for next year and beyond. Looking at the roster and recruits with the D scheme, I don’t see a lot of reason to expect major improvement next year.

The beavs were in most games this year except ASU. I thought Smith had the program trending in the right direction, and that is the narrative of the announcers and people like Canzano. I hope that doesn’t lead to the kind of complacency Riley enjoyed.

      • 4
        1

To me, the ASU game seemed like a carbon copy of the Oklahoma St. game, some 15 months ago. I know the players change, but essentially no progress.

We get gamed by smarter OCs. Our defense is kind of a one trick pony, we match up well against some offenses and like last night some good OCs adjust and we get blown out. How many big runs did they have last night? Several of 50+ with no one even close to the runner. They knew we crashed ends on certain formations and took full advantage of that. They just played us smarter and we (tibs) had no answer.
I’m on the fence but leaning fire Tibs.

      • Roberts being out had us very exposed. We have recruited some guys that should be stepping up as better backups next year. Walling, Miller, Mascarenas.

BCS computers are the most consistent and fairest system I have seen. Intuitively U thought it was extremely close between A&M and Notre Dame but in my deepest ponders I gave the slightest edge to A&M. True it was so close in my head I figured it could still go either way, but I felt the committee would favor Norte Dame a fair amount more than this and that didn’t seem right as it seemed over 75% thought Norte Dame would get the nod. Not as razor close as it felt and what I imagined the old BCS would say.

Well the BXS simulation using last formula was run and had the below.

    4th: A&M. .8335
    5th: Notre Dame .8334

Even though was so close in BCS, it doesn’t feel like committee had it this tight and that brings up questions of how they can be consistent and truly fair in their approach. I don’t think they can be, and I have no reason to be pro A&M or SEC, as they get enough pandering, but I do believe the BCS is the clear superior system to pick the top 4. Just is too arbitrary at the end and the computers knew Florida was still a quality team even with 3 losses. Committee overexaggerated that 3rd loss that was all but certain when facing Alabama, and then tried to make it like A&Ms best win wasn’t all that impressive anymore when it was good. Not related Dame never would have beat Clemson had Lawrence played, and was likely to have lost first match up by 14+ had he played. Impressive to still beat them, but computers would have weighed the intricacies better. My vote is an 8 team playoff with either the five P5 champions and next 3 at-large picks by BCS, possibly with one spot for G5 if they are in Top 10.

The dude from South Carolina is a grad senior and got benched yesterday. He was replaced by Lisk who has been with the program since 2016. Maybe neither are returning? Charlie Brewer has been decent at Baylor.

    • I saw that as well when reviewing the transfer portal today. Jackson was a Top-100 high four star recruit at Texas and Brewer has 9,700 passing yards in three seasons at Baylor. Utah also has Cameron Rising coming back from injury he suffered during first game of the year. So Utah should be stacked with depth at QB next year.

Congrats to sweatybeaver for winning the NCAA pickem contest! Finshed 11 pts ahead of 2nd place, BlackBandits.
    Nothing beats a sweaty beaver.

    • I did 10 second picks this year, it seemed to work as I didn’t go lower then 3rd overall. Congrats to sweaty for blowing us out the last 4 weeks. It was a horse race for second and OOB didn’t pick yesterday, what happened? And congrats to Hedberg for making a big late season run. If I remember right he embarrassed us all last season.
Maybe next season will be normal. Probably not.

    • I did it! I am the greatest!
I can’t take all the credit. You guys being so terrible at picks really helped out!
I will buy everybody a round with my winnings!

  52. Somebody needs to ask Tibs or Smith or both what they’re prototypical NT and DEs are? Because it seems like they’re not even trying very hard to get bigger guys. I think to all or most of us here don’t understand why. If they don’t want bigger guys do they not think that is why are run defense is so bad each year? If we know what they’re looking for then at least we could maybe understand their recruiting strategy. Also we would know if our strength coach sucks and guys aren’t putting on the weight they need to. That could go for Oline as well.

    • As far as the weight issue goes, im wondering if everyone just took a break after the season was canceled. Then got surprised by the return to action.

      • I wonder this too. Weight changes on the defense were really odd. Like they stopped eating constantly and just did a ton of cardio. Offensive line was the opposite. It was like they stopped doing cardio and gained weight.

        • So the weight part I know some of it had to do with COVID. They couldn’t keep the training tables out like they wanted to and have all the meals for the players. When players should have been adding in the off season they were struggling to maintain.

  53. In response to thoughts about a different d coordinator this was posted by a parent of players on Twitter:

“I really want to speak on what I think happened this year but I rather not go public with my theory so in short I will say whatever reason they gambled with not playing some of their players on the side line did not work out.”

        • Akili played in every game and was the #4 tackler. He changed his number to 0 this year which was confusing.
I think he’s talking about Cody Anderson who is a rs-jr DE?

          • Oh, I was just wondering if the parent above was maybe talking about Arnold playing maybe more than he should have. I could see a scenario where our staff might do that to help ensure Mascarenas didn’t end up elsewhere. Similar to Reichner, where signing him was maybe a reach, but landing Speights too made it overall a worthwhile path.

      • Not sure which players the parent was referring to. In a shortened season we really miss out on the players that start out 2nd or third string and end up first string after easing into things. Also new players and young players missed out on some developmental activities. Imagine the growth of coaches and players with 4-5 more games.

So were these parents saying that talent was left on the sideline this year for whatever reason? Could that just be disgruntled parents also? I’m sure it happens at all levels.

    • Sour grapes?! Unless their son was a 330 lb DT that could has amazing feet and is extremely athletic! LOL A DB that’s physical and can run like the wind would be possible too!

      Keep watching the transfer portal?!

      Go Beavs!

  54. Another tidbit sounds like the drops at the tight end could be tied to the lack of practicing on the jug machines in practice. I’m not a football guy so no idea if that’s a standard drill.

    • Really hoping TQ gets his ball skills figured out next year. It would be great for our team but also if he can gain 500+ yds and 5 td then I think he has the size and blocking ability to get a look in the NFL. Would be great for the program if we can send a local TE to the league who is a smith recruit.

I wonder if JS is guilty of what could be termed “The Bolden Effect”: having a guy perform really well in practice against his own teammates, but unable to translate it into real competitive sequences during the games. In regards to the ‘parent quote’ above, players know who those guys are also, even if the coaches don’t see it for what it actually is. And I would guess that coaches may have some of angry’s confirmation bias towards those guys they simply like as guys and this could be another chink in the armor of JS as a Head Coach. The staff needs an Alpha- (Will Muschamp?) to demand more than what they are getting.

I give the staff a mulligan for this season. I imagine there was a huge sigh of relief in the locker-room that this year is finally behind them. It should have been the year to take advantage of a lot of good fortune regarding other teams scheduling/illnesses/staff changes/home field games (5 btw) but a huge missed opportunity. However you look at it, JS seems to be jinxing his own efforts, and the lack of results or effort to bring in legitimate d-line talent will continue to be the achilles heel.

    Year in review:
WSU- huge disappointment that they still can’t figure out how to stop a mobile freshman qb. No excuse to lose that game out of the gate, lack of pressure on the qb hurt the entire game
UW- Until OSU wins big games, they will not get the benefit of the doubt. I sy if they had won against WSU, the UW spots would have been in OSU’s favor, but the WSU loss set in motion the rest of the season.
Cal- Gutty win and a lot of fight from the entire team
UO- Civil War win saved the season form total disaster
Utah- Luck o the Beavs that this was the game JJ missed. Should have been a win
Stanford- Stanford knows and expects to win games that Beavs aren’t sure they should win, sort of hope they can win, big disappointment to lose this one too
ASU- Beavs were looking at the calendar and mailed it in, instead they were looking for Christmas and family time again. ASU will win the South next year

Champ seemed to fit this mold perfectly. The staff couldn’t stop talking about him during preseason, he was named captain, then, as we all saw coming, he did very little in any of the games. To the staff’s credit, I believe his playing time diminished as the season went on.

Another big question I had all season: where were Irish and Gould? We heard so much about how fast they both are. It was obvious from watching them return kicks against ASU that they both should’ve seen the field more in some capacity. Yet neither guy could sniff the field all season. How did Irish go from being a guy that got spot duty and caught a TD last year to totally in the doghouse this year?

      • A lot of questions that haven’t been answered this year.
-where was Tavis Shippen(I really think he will be a big time player.
What exactly happened to David Morris(he was going to play, was contract traced, than never played.
Is Gumbs healthy and was this precaution to get him 100% for next year?
Is Trey Lowe injured, or did he just not get time the last 2 weeks?
Is Whitley going to play next season, or is it a cancer?
This season kind of led to a lot of unanswere, nor questioned, topics. I would love to know some of these answers, but than again whatever. Maybe we find out some insight down the road, or maybe not. Either way I do think this next season is going to be a fun year for the Beavs

        • We already talked about shippen and think he opted out.

Morris was hurt and they decided it would be best to hold him out til next season.

Gumbs was hurt and held out til next season.

Whitley is still a question mark but I think that’s the nature of his case and nobody really knows. Best wishes to him.
Trey lowe has played once he was cleared.

          • Unfortunately, I bet you most of those guys retire before next season. Morris has been out every year. Gumbs too (in a shorter stint).

I hope they all stay but realistically, it doesn’t look good.

            Go Beavs!

      • Good point on champ. Our DBs are generally very tall and champ would have had a big agility advantage. I think he would do well in the slot but have never seen him lined up there.

    • I absolutely hate “Would, could, should” have statements but something I would bet everything on, is that if the Beavs didn’t have J2 this season, they lose every game… probably badly! One one player is so necessary for a football team, that’s not a great sign (not saying it doesn’t happen but it’s obviously not good when they’re gone or they are back at less than 100%). So with that being said, how can we expect that next year is going to be better (when J2 declares for the draft)? The back-up RBs can barely last 5 carries before they’re dinged up! The only thing that kept Gebbia vertical (upright) for so long, was the threat and play of J2. That would have been brutal without him.

I’m honestly not trying to be negative! I want this program to succeed so badly (have for 4 decades) and in my honest opinion, it’s not going to happen with this regime (IMO). People keep arguing that we’re “competitive”?! We were competitive last year and lost a few close ones in that year (probably as many as we won-5). This year should have been improved, COVID or not, if you’re playing the games, there’s no excuses! They’re still losing the close games which has been more of a coaching issue, although they are lacking some horses but some of the game time, personnel, and playcalling decisions were ridiculous. EX: T Harrison is by far the best looking receiver prospect they have on the team! How is he not getting more plays, let alone targets? He’s a D1 (highly touted) player! If he’s still that much of a liability to have on the field, then that’s problematic.

Some possible issues for next season:
*If Smith still has Tibs as a DC still
*Does Lindgren go elsewhere? He’s had offers!
*Does O-Line (Coach M) depart for greener pastures?
*I think J2 is gone. Unfortunately, I think they’re might be a couple more surprises through retirements/ transfer, etc. Attrition always sucks but it might hurt the Beavs a little more than usual this year.
*Lastly, everyone keeps saying we’ll be better, “next year, next year, next year” (every year). The thing that sucks about this season is how down the conference was and the Beavs still finished right near the bottom (thank God for Ariz.). And now, you have 11 other teams, most of which finished stronger and ahead of Oregon State that are looking forward to being better next season too. The odds are not in Oregon State’s favor to surpass anyone above them next season, in my opinion!

Gonna be a LONG off season.

      Go Beavs!

  56. Through a 2nd hand source (nobody i personally know) it sounds like OSU is expecting to pick up a DT this week via transfer.
Reading between the lines, given that the kid out of Utah, Siaki Ika, has a “big announcement Monday”, I guess that is a decent possibility. He was previously showing as a 100% lean to Utah via the 2 crystal balls he had, but one of those predictors recently switched up their ball to say “undecided”.

Fits the body type NuclearBeav has been hoping for. Last played at LSU at 6’3″ 350lbs.
    247 says he’s now 372 lbs.
So keep an eye out for some hopefully good news tomorrow.
I’m making no predictions on this one.

  57. That would be great. Iij don’t think they need another aydon I prefer to see a guy between 315-350 unless they’re freak enough to move at 370 but we definitely need a guy like this. It’s good even if he only plays goal line and 3rd and 4the and short. It says in the scouting report he needs to trim down.

Maybe this why the staff hasn’t been recruiting guys like this out of high school.

    • IT would fit some of the theme I see. If nothing else our staff is proficient at getting guys fit. Aydon played 3/4 of the downs his senior year which is impressive since he only played about 1/4 of the time his Junior year. Weight change was only 1 lb but the guy had wayyyyy more stamina. We miss him terribly this year.

    • Whenever I think of Moran, I think about the time Angie Machado tracked down Moran and Chase Lucas at the airport for a TMZ style interview after their official visit several years ago.
Seemed weird at the time that an adult would think stalking highschool kids at the airport was a good idea.
“Welcome to Oregon State! We’re desperate for a 4* recruit, please talk to us!”

      https://youtu.be/fctN5ZJlPqU

    • Too bad he couldn’t embrace/adjust ala Jack Coletto. Speaking of which, I think I’m gonna start calling ol’ Jack “the Swiss Army Knife” or “Jack Knife”. S.A.K. seems to fit more with all of his multiple dimensions. The guy does deserve some recognition. Probably the most consistent rusher when called upon (besides J2), had a couple nice little throws this season and he may not be a great LB but he’s just trying to do his best when called upon! Can’t fault a guy for that.

      Appreciate the effort JC!

      Go Beavs!

  58. Just reviewed the transfer portal. Crazy how many guys have entered it recently. Probably more will do the same now that they are eligible to play immediately at another school.

Too bad there are not very many high-level DT’s available. Who knows … maybe another Charles Moore (or a version of Moore that actually attends classes) can be uncovered. Or maybe DT’s depart Arizona as that program looks in disarray with guys leaving and we can snatch somebody up.

  59. 16

Long time reader, first time poster. Some recruiting/roster thoughts, special teams questions and a thank you.

Saw the news about Mason Moran and I think the other name was Jackson Chryst today so far. I also remember Nick Moore, Connor Morton, Cameron Stoudamire, Charles Moore and Matthew Tago have entered the portal as well already. The only one that really hurt to me was Tago, loved the energy and how he played but the transfer makes sense given how little he was being utilized at the time.

With the promising limited action of Gulbranson, Nolan’s return, Gebbia’s recovery, Vidlak’s potential and Coletto’s Swiss Army knife abilities, our QB competition will be fun to watch. IMO better than where we were at in the beginning of this season, albeit hinging on health and development.

Are the above stated players the only transfer portals since Fall 2020 football started or am I forgetting some players as well? Like was Job Dockery, who I believe was a walk on, a transfer portal or just sitting out? Also I think Cam Stoudamire and Connor Morton were walk ons.

I am just trying to better understand how many scholarships we have potentially coming up/available. After reviewing the list of RS JR and SR, I hope the coaches are able to capitalize with the potential space they will get. It is my sincerest hope we start hearing about DT’s and playmakers coming to Corvallis in the like of Tongue.

I understand JCookus has a huge impact in the state of Oregon with recruiting and is meaningful to our teams history, but I am concerned by how many LS, K and P we have been involved in over what feels like the past two seasons, not including the transfers out ex J.Nelson. Makes we wonder if it’s an issue with talent identification or development.

Not the way I’m sure any of us wanted to end the season but there was development and growth to be proud of. We are winning recruiting battles we used to infrequently win and adding meaningful pieces to our roster. I appreciate all the BeaverNation posters here who helped keep me entertained during this Pandemic, helped make the quarantine less lonely. I hope you all are safe, healthy and enjoying the undisputed/unquestioned champions of the state of Oregon.

Angry and Nice, thank you for all you do for us Beav Fans. This site puts out the news first and has the best community insight on the program. I frequently see this site break news that somehow ends up in 30 minutes to 24 hrs later on BB, BE, AM, AN or various other “BeaverReporter/OLiveReporter” Twitter feeds and websites.

Side note worth mentioning, keep an eye out for OSU Wrestling, Coach Pendleton, Engel, IMar and Kosoy are building something great in Corvallis.

      • Nice and Angry,

Thank you for the welcome and the link.

I’d assume that two of the scholarships from that tracker will go to M. Brewer and T. Lowe, unsure if Harrison is on scholarship yet but that would impact that number. Also I think they may scholly Kitan/Walk On. Tongue and Taylor are basically a swap out. The timeline makes we wonder about the retirement being linked to freeing up a spot for Tongue, I may be way off on that but the timing is suspect.

In my mind that means we should have three scholarships or so right now before the shock wave hits us and we have more resources come available to improve, unless you both think we will stay fairly stable with minimal departures. We are almost to the very end of the stink of Anderson’s recruiting birds nest. There are still, somehow, 0 impact scholarships still floating around from that time ex.Wellsfry. I think we may lose one or two Cali/Non-Oregon players who miss their families that will hurt to see leave, but I can’t say I blame them at all for being closer to loved ones.

I just hope that the wave of players who do go are filled with players finding rosters and competition they can get on the field against at the appropriate level. Reviewing OSU’s RSJR/SR and RS senior classes it has its share of a tories about would of, could have, should have.

Here’s hoping that JS and his “Sharp Shooter” class of ‘21 are on target!

  60. The odd thing about Smith and Tisebar to me is that Smith should appreciate the value of a fast defense and a D line – at least DEs – that can disrupt. As productive as the O was when Smith et al went to the Fiesta Bowl, the D and the DEs were critical. Also, UW had some pretty good Ds when he was O Coordinator there, or at least some outstanding individuals that could make plays. Team D doesn’t seem to be the same anymore in the context of today’s offenses with more points and YPG, but a team still need players to disrupt, make plays, TOs, etc. so your own offense gets more opportunities, and you need that on the D line.

  61. 5
    1

Special teams play has not been good since Smith got here. Aside from a couple creative but turned out to be illegal plays there hasn’t been many positives. The punting game was a huge liability this year. The return game made bad decisions and often got penalties and the coverage team is good for giving up at least one big return a game. Kicking game gets a pass because of choukair and they did end up replacing him. Hopefully hayes will continue to get better.

Should cookus be replaced or at least on the hot seat? I would say yes. Special teams has hurt this team a lot but nobody has mentioned cookus. I hope he doesn’t get a pass because he’s a homegrown legend.

I agree with the general takeaway here on most points.

Punting was a shit show from the jump between Lightweight and LL Beanz. Neither demonstrated a firm command of what’s needed in that role. Whether it be poor execution by P, LS, blockers and coverage we were a heart attack waiting for ASU to show up. I do believe that weather may have aggravated that situation, but you cannot ignore a mid season, I believe, change at the position. The troubling part is we applauded Lightweight when he pulled off an And1 Streetball move to get that punt off early this season, little did we know that was out of necessity because JCookus had the boys trying block on ice skates.

Return game is another example of confusing decision making. For what feels like the past two season our return weapons have been:
-Champ Flemmings (First team in our hearts, honorable mention for LP toss due to sheer distance every time he has contact, kid averages like 4 yards in the air when he gets tackled but is flying the wrong direction)
-Trevon Bradford (Solid when healthy, not and advantage but safe option)
-J.Irish (STRAIGHT BURNERS but only in one direction, would like to see him further develop and evolve a lateral Juke package)
-A.Gould (Haven’t seen a ton, but from what I have I liked. He hits that extra gear when he has the ball, I have to believe he will compete for the 2021 spot for PR or KOR
-JJ (Shame we resorted to having JJ do this, we owed him better)
-Kolby Taylor (was a very safe option when he served as PR or KO, can’t point to the when it happened but feel like he has stepped in for us in the past)
-Treshaun/Trey/Tongue/Bolden (Great athletes and could factor return game in for 20201)

My personal feeling is we should have better options, whether JCookus makes the right call is TBD. My hope is AGould/J.Irish/TLowe take ownership of the role and move away from throwing a 5’6 human at 11 people who were that tall when they were 13-15. Those hits pile up and Champ’s been taking some shots this year.

Agree on kicking. I question JC’s ability to instruct and ability to execute. I think his seat is warm, but a strong outing early in 2021 will cool it off for awhile.

In my early post I refer to his connections in the state and recruiting relationships, I would think that is what is keeping his seat somewhat safe. And I will give him credit, the dude busts his ass finding players. I’m just hesitant at throwing congratulatory words when his impact is basically a carousel in the specialist room, local fringe 3 Star and down commits and local/regional PWO’s. I just appreciate the effort, hence we as fans being ok with that second/third chance for him.

In the spirit of OSU special teams,

    • Blocking and tackling on special teams is highly linked to team depth. We have legit starters in most positions but depth is miserable.

  62. Another upper classman CB the Beavs just offered today. Jaddarius Perkins (via the JC ranks)

Again, just not the type of battles the Beavs ever win. Expecting him to choose someone else when he announces Thursday. Recently decommitted from oregon but could still end up there.

Does show we’re at least trying to fill the CB spot with a player who’s immediately ready to go.

OT- “The Pirate” has no shame. Leach accepted a bowl bid with a 3-7 record. I think it’s the first team in bowl history at four games under .500. He can take his sword and shove it up his ass! Looks like bowl season is full of bad SEC teams.

    • 7
      1

I would take a bowl game for OSU. I would start Gulbranson to get him experience and see what he can do. Maybe a few other players that haven’t played much as well.

  64. Go get Gus Malzohn at a discounted price (sitting on a pile of SEC cash), and bring in a with some real recruiting chops for a 3 year run. Maybe he can do something similar to Leach and energize and be innovative with his offense compared to other versions of OSU.

    • 2
      2

Smith has 4 of the top 5 classes in OSU history and the top two. I think we can give him plenty of credit in that department.

      Edit – numbers were bad

      • I think a lot of that has to do with the way recruiting and rankings go as a business. The rankings are such a flawed system. I wouldn’t be surprised if one of the top5 is the class where riley had like 26 commits or even Anderson had some because his classes are 2and most current.

  65. Wonder how likely any of our staff get poached?
I would think Lindgren and Pitre could be guys that could be lured away. Not saying I want that. Just thinking about last year when Arizona tried to hire Lindgren and Barnes had give a raise

    • Pitre, Lindgren, and Bray would be the likely assistants with the best chance at receiving other offers. ILB play has been strong, and Bray is one of our better recruiters on D. No secret on Pitre, and Lindgren has earned a solid rep as a play caller.

Should be interesting to see what happens. I see Eggers opined that he doubts Niner will let anyone go, and that any staff changes will be due to assistants moving on to other jobs.

      • Good list of those who might be receiving offers. I’d add the possibility of Michalczik. He has a tendency to stay in one place for around 4 years so he may be ready.

    • Lindgren is the most likely coach to get offers but that wouldn’t be a huge loss since it’s JS system.

Wouldn’t worry about any other coaches. None are hot commodities.

I still hope js has the guts to move on from Tibs. He’s a great LB coach but just not there as a d coordinator.

    • Not sure any will get offers. After all, the Beavers went 2-5. It’s not like these guys are world beaters yet, but I think it’s coming in the very near future!

It’s nice to see Dominion and other companies who were slandered are going to sue OAN, FOX, and Newsmax. Funny how quickly two of the three have come out and said no fraud. Fascinating.

I don’t know how you can be a Trumper and see that and not admit you were totally played. But my guess is instead of admitting fault with self, people will say these entities are all involved with the deep state, and go further down the rabbit hole.

  67. Rick George, Colorado’s AD, channels Pat Casey when he responds to Larry Scott casting blame on Colorado for not scheduling a non-conference opponent when they were already on standby to step in for either USC or nike last Friday as well as Scott’s drivel about them having his “empathy”.

George said, “…we don’t need anybody’s empathy,,,.“We need respect, and we realize we’ve got to earn that.
“We had our eyes wide open …“We agreed to a set of protocols for the championship game,” George said, “and the conference followed the protocols. Could there have been a change? Yes …(after all) We were on standby. It made no sense to prepare for a third team…

We’ve kicked around the idea of Casey as an AD, and whatever warts one may think he has, you’ve got to know he’d stand up for his team(s) and not roll over for the likes of Larry. Thumbs up for George, somewhere Pat smiles.

  68. OT: went car shopping today. Any recommendations for a family car? If things go as planned, in about 7 months we will have three kids total all in car seats. Looking for third row and cargo space. Anyone made a purchase recently and have recommendations? This relates to football because I won’t have any time to watch games for the next couple of years unless there is a mini tv by the changing table.

      • Looked at the ascent today. Not much space back there for all the stuff we will be taking here and there. Much better looking than a van though!

    • Toyota Highlander has it all. I’ve owned three now, I just lease a new one every three years, and they are awesome. Plenty of room, third row of seats although limited but for small kids probably okay. They handle like a car, nice looking and great value. Go test drive one and compare it to the Outback or Ascent and IMO there’s really no comparison. The V6 295 HP provides some get up and go too.

      Stay with me…

Wife just bought a 2015 GMC Yukon Denali.

420hp V8, 8 speed auto, 4wd. Suburban size, big fucker.

Literally every creature comforts anyone could ever think of and room for our 4 boys age 10-18, and then some.

Goddamn thing gets incredible gas mileage for what you’ve got wrapped around you. Must be the engine management plus the 8 speed trans, we put premium in it but it seriously gets low-mid 20s and we don’t have to stuff in to some shitbox.

Plus I’ll take it in a head on collision over any minivan on the road.

      • Own a Yukon. Watch out for rust and the engine management can screw up your your oil pressure due a stupid extra filter that probably costs a buck. Keep up and or do extra oil changes. You’ve been warned.

        • No rust here on the left coast, the oil pressure sensor filter screen can be a problem for any of the new generation AFM LSx motors. I’ll swap it out if the sensor shits the bed.

    • We’ve been looking at the Kia Telluride. I’ve never owned a Kia, but the reviews are great, and it’s amazing all the options you can get for less than $40,000. Warranty is really good too. Definitely worth a look.

    • Our Toyota Sienna handled the three car seats phase well. I was against a minivan until begrudgingly test driving them alongside SUV’s with similar capacity. The nice thing about minivans is that they’re designed with younger kids in mind. Auto sliding doors that you can open from anywhere, door buttons that are easily accessible for little people, the ability for the little people to easily walk between rows of seats, virtually everything being removable so it can be cleaned…it’s a long list. Unless they’ve changed SUV’s a lot over the last few years, it felt like SUV’s were designed more for having a family that’s totally out of the car seat stage (or fewer than three kids).

    • We have a tacoma 4 door pickup that we use as a family car. It actually works pretty well. There’s a canopy on the back, so all of the gear can get thrown back there. And then you still have a truck for whenever you need to haul something. The 3 carseats could get a little tight though since they’ll all share 1 row, so I could understand your desire for the extra row of seats. Good luck!

    • I hope Arizona does hire Brennon. I know everyone believes he’s this amazing coach but the league he’s in is horrific. Even Boise St was terrible this season. Good for him for doing what (they: the team) did this season but I think it’s a major reach to say that he is a PAC 12 caliber coach (just based off of a good year in the Mountain West), what about the 3 previous years? Please, hire him UA!

      Go Beavs!

Super dumb move for him. No way he gets drafted after this season…whatever was up with him this year he needed to prove he’s past it. He’ll be lucky to land an UDFA gig.

      1

      Productivity will be scrutinized!
Upside: Length, Lean frame (with room for additional mass), Athletic enough to compete, had a monster junior season

Downside: Undersized (needs more mass), Can he disengage with NFL blockers?, huge production drop off with loss of key DL, injury bug, will he be able to last

If he is drafted, it would be late (7th rounder) or just an Undrafted FA. The only thing that would move him up is a killer combine showing.

Routing for him but not seeing anything beyond this.

      Go Beavs!

      • He seemed to have caught lightning in a bottle last season. I don’t think he was even a consistent starter his sophomore season. I’m dubious of the boards that have him second or third round. Who knows, maybe some NFL organization can tap his potential.

  69. Anyone see the “Reverse Flea Flicker” in the Nevada/Tulane Bowl game? Good wheel route and delivery there. OC Matt Mumme (related to Hal Mumme- Air Raid guru). Not a big fan of Nevada’s HC though.

    Go Beavs!

  70. There’s a vague reference on Kerry Eggers Twitter account about JS and making changes. I don’t use Twitter, nothing specific at all and maybe he’s reposting from a follower?

    • He clarified that he has no inside info, just a hunch. Then Dan Rothwell chimed in and said it’s a talent problem, not a coaching issue.

    • I think you guys are misinterpreting Eggers’ tweets. He does not have “a hunch” that any assistants will be let go. In fact his tweet 2 days ago said “My guess is, any changes will be because an assistant leaves to take another job. I don’t anticipate Jonathan letting anyone go.”

Head’s up, but that new stimulus bill they passed makes streaming a felony. Hey, at least we know what people will be spending their $600 on…ordering Comcast.

Dude he’s been our best corner since he arrived. Not even a question. Why do you hate on him so much when he constantly produces?

          • Absolutely not true. He had a diving pick in the endzone and was able to stay in bounds to save a td. Had a strip sack against Stanford. And he was number 3 on the team in tackles. Hmmm. Your hate for him is very illogical.

          • I don’t hate him at all.
Think we can find a guy who makes plays on the ball, though, instead of letting lobbed passes fall into his lap.

          • He’s literally the only one who makes plays on the ball. All of the other guys get pelted In the back of the head. I know of at least two of his picks were because he actually looks back at the qb and came off his guy to get the int and that’s why the ball looks like it went right to him. Being in the right position is part of football IQ. You’re faulting him for catching easy picks when the rest of the team has routinely dropped them aside from grant. You didn’t address the fact that he’s the best tackling DB on the team as well.

He’ll probably be drafted higher than Rashed.

          • Bleedorage – Wright will not get drafted. Can put that in stone. Why? Pure effort. He doesn’t put in effort on every play. The film won’t lie and NFL coaches aren’t going use a draft pick on a guy who tries to arm tackle.

Best tackling DB and overall DB on the team is Jaydon Grant by far. Dude plays hard all the time.

    • I remember way back when Bradon Browner left early for the NFL, I thought he wasnt close to being ready either. But then he went on to have a pretty solid NFL career, before he got popped for that whole attempted murder thing.
Hopefully Wright stops short of that.

        • He got picked up as an undrafted rookie but broke his arm. Then 4-5 years in the CFL before Seahawks picked him up.
CFL doesnt pay well, but it’s makes for viable career option for a guy who may not be getting much out of a college degree, and sometimes leads to an NFL gig

    • I think Wright will have a decent pro career. Main reason is he is 6’4” and that would tie him with Lenny Wells and Brandon Browner as the tallest corners in NFL history. Both of those guys have relatively lengthy NFL careers. Wright won’t fit all systems. He doesn’t have the speed or hips to play in aggressive man cover schemes. However, he is ideal for a Cover 2 scheme. His ball recognition are decent but more importantly, he is a very willing tackler, and that is what you need is a Cover 2 scheme. Out of all the DB’s, he is the one that screams out pro prospect. That is weird to say since he isn’t even the best DB on the team. That would be Grant, but Grant won’t even get a sniff of the NFL because of his size limitations and lack of speed.

      • Couldn’t agree more. I could see him as a Sherman light version.

Although if Morris is ever healthy, I think he could have pretty decent pro potential. Huge if though

          • Richard Sherman bro.

He wasn’t by any stretch a home run draft pick. He was late 5th round (which I think Wright will be similarly)

Just saying Nashon has a lot of natural talent and in the right system he could be really good.

Just my opinion and I said “light” as in not as good but similar body makeup etc..

    • Dumb move by him too but…I’m confident he’ll garner more interest than Reshad. Man, both guys would benefit a lot from another year (for different reasons). They really are getting bad advice.

You should go early if you’re secure in the 1st round or if you’ve shown all you can reasonably show at the college level and your limitations are purely physical. Does not remotely apply to these two.

Nashon has shown flashes but he’s still raw. Could see him really breaking out in another season. Hamilcar is a weird case of an amazing year and then an absolutely terrible one. He needs to prove that last year was a fluke.

    • I think most people are tired of the political talk. Im one of them. I’ve never had a Facebook or Twitter account and its still annoying.

    • You know that’s exactly why the country is so divided. I’m not saying it’s your fault far from that, everyone is at fault. Both sides (well there is more than that but I digress) are sitting in their echo chambers not wanting to hear a different view. Every side has their own news outlets that blast what they want to hear and believe. If anyone challenges that, they just dig in stronger and hold onto what they believe.. I mean whatever happened to having an open mind and considering things. You know what I mean? I think social media has played a huge role in all of this too…

Beavs behind 58-57 now to PSU. Vikings about to try to complete 3 point play after commercial break. Hoping they lose, because there i no way in he’ll a P5 Pac-12 Head Coach should survive after losing back to back against Portland and Portland State. All time high levels of ineptitude there. Ridiculous. Tinkle has to go.

How embarrassing. Lose to UofP (Ducks beat them by 39) and almost cough one up to PSU. Much like Smith, terrible game manager, recruiter and motivator

  74. Beavs won but primarily because a BS blocking call against PSU down 1 with 13 seconds left. Player was completely still on a screen and Ethan ran into him and got bailed out. PSU didn’t get to run their set play to try to win the game at the end. Just before that Beavs also were lucky as Reichle had a pass blocked and PSU was looking to recover and they called a somewhat questionable foul there for OSU to maintain possession. Super ugly game though. Tinkle can’t coach. Barnes needs to start the search.

Sources: Auburn is narrowing in on hiring Boise State’s Bryan Harsin as its next head coach. A deal is expected soon.

  76. I think it was Daschel who was asked on one of his forums, “what is it going to take for WT to get fired”?….his smug answer was something like…maybe a six-win season, which won’t happen. I’m looking at the P-12 schedule and I’m not sure where this group of dysfunctionals gets two wins in league play?
