Oregon State @ Arizona State / General Thread

357

I’m putting this up early due to obligations later this week. Feel free to go general until the weekend.

Game times are as follows:

May 14 (Fri) 6:30 PM Away Arizona State Phoenix, AZ

May 15 (Sat) 6:30 PM Away Arizona State Phoenix, AZ

May 16 (Sun) 12:30 PM Away Arizona State Phoenix, AZ

It’s been an up and down year for Mitch, and I think poorly of him for that decision not to walk the bases loaded, but with a .667 winning percentage this year, he’s right at Casey’s career mark (though, Casey’s final teams when he left were much higher). Someone asked what OSU standards are these days. 2 out of 3, as always. Casey nailed that for decades and established it. Mitch is meeting it as of today, though he’s been more shaky than Pat.

In other news, Vidlak looked great in his early throws in the scrimmage. He looked poor later in the game. It’s hard to say why given the footage. Smooth and looked mentally ahead of where most would expect as a freshman. Anyone go to the scrimmage and have more data?

I mentioned it in the past thread but I looked at the rosters and I’m really happy with DL progress. In 2020 we had 3 active DL over 270 (not really counting Whitley, Shippen or Reichner). In 2021 spring we have 9. That’s a great sign for the strength/conditioning and diet help for the program.

I’ll also say that as of spring the players look much more on the fit side than big side.

Assuming no big transfers our front 3 will average about 280 every down. That’s not perfect but a heavy step in the right direction.

    • Agree with that assessment, and think it’ll be critical for our success this year. I had the same thought at the spring scrimmage- thought the DL looked good.

Anyone have any insight as to why Whitley is transferring? It seems like we could have really used him, and his farewell post doesn’t make it sound like there are any hard feelings at all.

Was Reichner over 270# last year? Currently I believe he’s the lightest D-lineman on the roster at 253 or so. Maybe with COVID and the skipped year his conditioning suffered?

      • He was listed at 274 before the injury last year. He doesn’t strike me as a lazy guy at all so maybe it’s intentional? With the injuries it might just be a better weight for him to play healthy. If he can play fast at DE at mid 250’s and make an impact I don’t see a need for him to force on weight. The only other DL under 270 a Broski (266) and Lolohea (253).

        • The weight thing is a real head scratcher too. I think last year hodgins came in lighter to be more effective at pass rush but seems to have put on weight again this year. Reichner I would guess is under the weight that they would like him. I could be wrong but that’s really light for a 3-4 DL. I think I remember him being 1 of the better run stoppers but that will be hard at that weight and I don’t remember him ever being much of a pass rusher.

          • I think under smith there is more emphasis on good weight. I think part of last year’s losses was focus on conditioning (cardio) and building muscle weight over flab. Hodgins essentially weighs the same as he did two years ago this year but he looks far more fit imo. This could also explain why the biggest guys like Bennet, Skelton and Anderson have been fairly stagnant with weight the last three years. They are changing their body composition with healthy eating, cardio and lifting. Most of the bigger 3 star guys will come in pretty flabby from high school and a good strength/conditioning/nutrition program will get to work converting that flab to useful weight and increasing endurance.

I think i’ve been seeing it across the board for the last 3 years (minus covid making it weird). Could be totally wrong though!

    • Agree as well. Whitley isn’t a big deal. We’ll be okay and likely replace him with someone better via transfer.

I saw Michigan already offered Whitley – why?

      • I’m really not sure. He was very explosive when he was on the field though. I really hope he gets to a healthy playing weight and gets a shot to move past the tumor.

Didn’t he decide [or physically was only able] to give effort like every other play? That’s my memory of watching him.

      • Disagree I think he was a big part of Rased’s success and lack thereof. He could push the pocket into the QBs lap and force him out where Rashed was waiting. I can remember at least a handful of times where it wasn’t Rashed beating his man but the QB running to where he had contain. Also not sure they will get anyone better with the luck they’ve had to this point. Whittleys problem was his conditioning which I can see having a tumor on your heart impacting that greatly.

It will be interesting to see if the line really is bigger overall if that makes up for not having a big space eater in the middle.

        • I don’t think it will make up for it. An explosive NT with 315+ to ensure the online knows he’s there is undeniably a huge part of a 3-4. I just think we’re in better shape than last year. We do have 2 guys around 300 lbs and I do really like what I saw from Evan Bennett last year buuutttttt it’s just not the same. I think the DL will be much improved but without a huge body that can play 50% of downs we will not have an elite defense.

Canham has the most uncomfortable .667 winning % I’ve ever seen. I think this has to do with being 1-5 vs the Ducks, head scratching moves that lost games, and what seems like a different unit (pitching, hitting, or defense) not showing up on any given night. Seems like we rarely play a complete game. Win % winds up good due to our talent level, but how we get there looks like a mess, which reflects on the manager. I think this is what’s happening. It’s not just where you are but how you got there.

    • I see a team that is consistency away from a regional host. That’s exciting to me because the one thing in sports that is 100% learnable is game management and consistency by players. I don’t know if Canham is good or not but I think we will have a great picture after next full season. If they clean up then it’s going to be a very strong program.

Watching some games this year though, it’s college baseball and the quality isn’t the highest. No disrespect to the game but there are many errors and head scratching moves by all teams. I mean the Beavs basketball team just made the elite 8. That’s how crazy college sports are.

      • I agree with that 100%. Great teams usually have atleast 10 losses on the season. Mistakes will happen but hopefully they will review them and correct them over time

        • Not only that but it is baseball. The sport where the worst team has the best chance at beating the best team compared to any other major sport. It can be a flukey game. The difference between a line drive double and a line drive double play can be inches. Tons of dumb luck in baseball.

Angry, is it possible that you have decided that you don’t like Canham’s style even prior to this year which makes the borderline look worse than they would? I think bias is a tough thing to overcome when trying to give an opinion. Subjective vs objective is tough when you have little data to pull from. This is the same reason that I wish college football would wait a few weeks into the season to have their first round of polls. So often the preseason polls linger in the benefit of the doubt when a team is just not good but has a good history. I think Pat Casey was a great coach but if you were to cherry pick bad decisions that he made over his career you could easily find plenty of head scratching decisions.

        9

Anything is possible, but since I said I’m willing to change my mind and also just said his .667 lives up to expectations, I don’t understand why you’d conclude I’m inflexible on him.

        • I didn’t conclude you were inflexible, I said biased. I think your bias clouds your assessment and even when you point out positives for Canham it seems to come with a “but”. You are certainly welcome to an opinion and I’m not sure how much I think Canham is the perfect manager for the long term. However, I do think he was probably the best choice to follow up a legend.

I think baseball is such a different game than football or basketball in that the x’s and o’s change by each situation and pitch. The manager gets too much blame or credit for in-game management as execution is often as much mental as anything else. That is why baseball has gone so heavy to analytics. The real measure of a baseball coach is how mentally prepared the team is to get the job done. That is a bit of my concern with Mitch and Dorman in the number of walks/hbp coming from the pitchers. The second measure is recruiting and so far that seems to be good with the advantage of being a national program. He will have to create his own success to keep that rolling.

I’m not ready to form my opinion yet on Canham but I have enjoyed watching a bunch of their games this year.

Must be a slow night in sports. Oklahoma and okayState on tv right now. Neither has a winning conference record. Lots of fans in the stands, not a mask in site! Testing out broadcasting from a host site?

    • Good for you!
If you are able, please post observations of “little things”…….signs of team attitude/spirit/focus, interaction with staff, etc.
The involvement of players when not on the field and the actions of coaches when out of the spotlight are of interest and not often available over radio/TV.

Creative. Lots of frauds in the government. Just connecting the dots that he was part of the funding for the lab testing where covid started. He seems to be having trouble answering if he did/does provide any funding. Doesn’t matter what side of the political fence one is on, this should concern everyone. This will be replicated, look at how easily the world was disrupted.

  4. If you’re following the twitter feed, you’ll see a tweet from a Rivals analyst answering fan questions regarding Jay Hardy(Auburn DT transfer)
He makes it sound like UNC are favorites but OSU is making a “serious push” for him.
Hopefully it’s more than a push and they get the job done. I didnt get the impression that Hardy had much interest in OSU, but maybe that has changed since last week?

    • Speaking of the feed, is there an issue with it? You said Twitter did something to make it more difficult. What happened?

      • Twitter went through several “updates” recently. Among the changes they made was the method they now use to display “following/followers” of accounts. Instead of chronoligical listings shwmowing most recent activity, now they show popular accounts first. It just really screws with some of the tools I’ve counted on for years .

I’m currently signed up for access to twitter api and have installed Python/Tweepy on my desktop. Going to attempt to write some programs that will make life easier. I guess this forces me to do some kesrning about coding, which isnt a bad thing. Just wish I had more free time to put towards it.
Was hoping to connect with coders who have used these tools to get some tips for solutioning the problem.

    • One of the teams I thought could be in the lead for Hardy was Tennessee. They were needing a DT transfer, and the former Auburn DL coach moved to Tennessee this offseason. But they picked up Kansas transfer Dajon Terry this week, which helped open the door for OSU.

  5. Hey guys. We have rain in the forecast for 7 straight days, yet I have my seedlings ready to plant (was growing them indoors for a month now)…afraid of over-watering/saturation, yet they have to get in the ground soon. What do you think?

    • How much rain? An inch or two? go ahead and plant. 10 inches, I’d wait.
Are they getting to big for their containers? If you have to wait to plant you could always temporarily transplant to a larger container.

  6. We’ll be getting an official visit June 11th from a 3*/4* C who decommitted from another Pac12 school earlier this year. I’m not posting a name now because he’s announcing his visits on May 31st.

      • So here is the scoop on Schad. I think it is a transfer based on getting significant playing time to increase exposure for a try at the NFL. A couple frosh played last year and were more explosive and with more upside. Fleck hit a couple home runs in the transfer portal getting a DT from Clemson who was a 4 star and team captain. Looks like he was getting displaced by some 5 stars….must be nice. MN also brought in a three year starter at DT from NC State. So the talk all winter was a six player rotation at DT, meaning a lot less PT. Schad is a solid player, but not a difference maker. If he ends up a Beav, I will be happy. Bummed he is transferring. Supposed to be a really good kid and should help our run D.

        • What’s up with Minnesota hoarding all of the DT??

Looks like you had another JC guy transfer out, Royal Silver. One of the OSU coaches started following him too, but his twitter acct is private so I cant do any viewing of his activity unfortunately.

          • I don’t want to tarnish Silvers reputation…..
Medically retired in 2019 and I thought he stayed in school and graduated. Great name! OK player. Regarding the DT’s, more beef and depth needed to stop and beat our two rivals that are NFL O line factories; Wisconsin and Iowa.

  7. Seems like they’re getting quite a few visits from quality players. Always is a big help to get the recruits on campus.

    • Blitz posted a handful of new names that weren’t on my most recent June visitors lists, so I’ve updated those plus added some new names without dates yet. A few guys are still up in the air if they’ll even visit, but I’ll leave them in there.
Lots of guys coming in June, with some pretty good names in there. If i find time later tonight i’ll try just posting them all here.
And yes, Dylan Lopez was the OL I hinted about earlier. 247 went ahead and posted his name.

      https://mobile.twitter.com/BeavRecruiting/lists

      • I use to doubt our chances to land a Florida guy but not anymore. When is the last time we landed a true center? Do we typically get an offensive lineman and develop him into a center?

I lived in Seattle back when the Mariner’s tied the total wins for one season record. They didn’t win every game, they mostly won every series. They weren’t the best team in Baseball but they were consistent and great fun to watch. Mitch is doing better than most 2nd year coaches. These are not the games we should be worrying about. It’s more about what happens in 3 – 5 years. Hopefully Mitch becomes a better coach, continues to recruit elite talent and keeps Oregon State as one of the best baseball teams in the US. GO BEAVS!

  10. New Pac-12 commish suppose to be announced today. Luck no longer in the running. I had heard he was the leading candidate so something changed. No idea who I should be hoping for.

      • 1
        1

Basically the same type of candidate as Scott, only slightly more western US connections. Still not a west coast guy or college sports guy. Apparently the draw was “experience leading an organization successfully through major change” which is obviously on the horizon for college sports.

Part of me thinks going with a long-time college guy would have been myopic given the major changes that are coming. I’m indifferent on this until we see the first year of results.

    • Well, we’ve already moved the basketball and football conference championship games to Vegas. Might as well make the Pac12 even more Vegas-y and bring in the guy who runs spirting events for the biggest Casino group in Vegas.
What are the chances Nevada and UNLV become Pac12 teams down the road? Do they even qualify academically? Where’s Jack?

    • @George Kliavkoff has been named the new leader of the league, a 54-year-old sports and entertainment executive with no college sports experience. He comes to the conference from MGM Resorts International, where he was the president of the company’s sports and entertainment division.”

  11. New MBB transfer from Marquette is 6’4 RS FR defense-first PG Dexter Akanno. Marquette fans got excited about him after video surfaced of him looking like he belonged playing pickup with half the Utah Jazz…then he failed to do anything during the COVID year (he did have COVID early in the season, which may have something to do with his lack of playing time).

Not a highly touted recruit initially. Looks like even more guard depth to replace the outgoing transfers.

    https://painttouches.com/2020/06/19/dexter-akanno-shows-out-in-scrimmage-against-nba-players/

    • 1
      1

Definitely a project. See some garbage time in the upcoming season and then compete for minutes the following year. He’ll be 21 this fall as he played at a prep school following high school. On track to be a 25 yr old SR!

Wonder what this means for Malone-Key. His transfer still hasn’t been announced.

      • Stuff from Wilner on the new commish:
He has a 5 year contract but dollars have not been made public.
From his first media session: “We have to get the Pac-12 Network distributed on every place, on every platform.”

He plans to relocate to SF, but that could be temporary, Oregon prez Michael Schill (head of the CEO group) says, “We don’t feel strongly that it (HQ) needs to be there.” On future rent/lease expenses, new commissioner George Kliavkoff says, “We will be returning money to the schools.”

Kliavkoff is a board member at Bet MGM and has served on the WNBA’s Board of Governors.

    • I decided to watch an interview with him from when he arrived at WSU from WVU. They asked why he left WVU and he said he didnt like the scheme, playing in a 3 man front.

      Welp…

  12. I’m seeing a lot of “middle of the order potential” tweets about baseball commits. Is this typical, or do we actually have some good bats coming in?

    • There’s bats and heat coming in. Doesn’t seem to be a drop off in recruiting. If Canham can get Reed on campus next year, that would be huge!

    • I feel like that was Pat Casey’s bread and butter. Great starters, a shallow bullpen, and lots of mediocre bats. Then every once in a while guys would pop off and be legit clean up type hitters. But the emphasis was always on starting pitching.

  13. New from Nemac on his podcast: “Oregon state is going to get a starter caliber player Tomorrow from the transfer portal for football”.

    • Thanks for the link.

““Structurally, we also need to review and address non-conference and conference scheduling, game times and any other competitive decisions made at the conference level. Everything is up for review to make us more competitive. I want to be clear about that.””

Those 8pm starts in football a thing of the past? I think I love this guy if that happens.

  14. Still not sure who the transfer will be. HS players are so much easier to predict. Transfers tend to play things close the vest and nobody ever leaks info on them.
    So we’re left to guess.
    A few potential options:

Lamonte McDougel(DT)- fits a need, and maybe he was hinting at it when he retweeted that measage earlier? A DT who already has seen the Pac12, even if he didnt play at WSU.

Keionte Scott(DB)- offered by OSU the other day. Has received several new offers today. Perhaps because he told teams he was about to make his decision tomorrow? not sure if JUCO even counts as a “transfer portal” guy either, so if Nemec specifically said transfer portal, this guy wouldnt totally fit his story.

Jay Hardy(DT)- only because of that rivals analyst saying OSU was making a serious push for him.

Derrick Tucker(S)- was told he plans to visit OSU. With Jonathan Riley out with ACL surgery, we need a safety pretty badly.

Josh Rogers(DT)- Also supposed to visit OSU in June.

Jaddarius Perkins(CB)- My off the radar choice. Nemec knows him well and has followed his recruiting closely, because at one point he was a duck favorite. But he committed to Mizzou instead, but left Mizzou during spring, before ever playing. Amd when he left, Nemec was one of the first people to comment on it. So makes sense of Nemec knows about it before anybody else in OSU media circles.

Akayleb Evans(CB)- I think it’s too soon for it to be him. We offered today, as did several other teams.

Bydarrius Knight(CB)- wouldnt surprise me, but i didnt get a strong sense he’ll go to OSU. He did follow back some of our local media people yesterday, and usually transfers dont follow media people to frequently.

So, my best guess right now is one of McDougel, Knight or Perkins. But I dont have a strong feeling about any of them at this point.

      • Both Hamilcar and Avery Roberts showed him some encouragement to come to OSU back in April. He’s been pretty quiet since. Our coaches were onto him pretty early and he follows Nemec. His cousin is Stephen Paea. Just alot of dots connecting on this one. Plus Michigan was Jordan Whitley’s first offer? It’s the wife swap of DTs.

      • If he couldn’t get any playing time at Michigan in 5 years, I doubt he’d be thought of as a “starting caliber” transfer.

        • I listened to the podcast segment last night several hours after ConnorJJ posted about it above.
What i heard was Oregon State is going to pick up a “potential immediate impact player” from the transfer portal. And later Nemec says he’s a guy who could/should play for OSU next year.
So not sure that really specifically means starter calibur, but it still could. I’d contend that any DT will make an immediate impact if theyre in the 300lb range, because we just dont have that type of size on the roster right now.
Guess we’ll find out soon enough

          • Was it a backhanded compliment like should play for them because the rest of the guys are 2 star recruits with only 1 power 5 offer?

          • Could be, but dont think that was his intention.
But he does often say things like “he’d be a good get for oregon state..” as if to say any other team he’d be just average for.

I thought we were the only ones who could make snarky commenta about OSUs recruiting?

        • A monster would be great but unlikely. I would.just hope for another 290+ so Bennett and Skelton can rotate out.

  15. Just looked at our visitors list and saw how highly rated David Bailey was. Any more info on this guy? Cause if we were to land him he would be the best guy smith has got by a long shot in recruiting rankings wise

  16. What are people’s expectations for a DT? Imo it’s unlikely we land a transfer who has the size, motor and talent to consistently require a double team or push the pocket around. For me min expectation is someone who can hold his running lane consistently and help with rotation of Bennett and Skelton.

I just don’t see a monster DT transferring as they are likely a starter already and if they did transfer it’s probably not to chill in Oregon when every school offers them.

    • I’m of the same thought. Seems most transfers dont even want to play in a 3 man front. I’ve already seen a few potential candidates specifically say that.
So 3 man front, at Oregon State cant be high on the list for most guys.
I wish for a disruptive 300+ lb dude who can put pressure on the QB, but I would expect a big body who basically fills a gap amd occasionally helps push the pocket, but regularly holds his position.

      • Yeah the more I watch the recruiting on DTs I think we’re going to have to develop players internally. I can see us getting high school kids with the frame or huge over weight guys like we have had in the past. Give them acouple years to develop in the conditioning program.

It reminds me of the perpetual.issues we had under Riley with offensive line. I will definitely take issues at DT over OLine.

We are getting decent talent and size at DE and EDGE/OLB now though which should take.some pressure off.

        • I’m wondering if faamoe can’t add the weight to become a DT. We definitely could use more since shad only has 1 year. Are Anderson and skelton seniors?

I would like to see them bring in guys as walk ons at the position to see if they can’t bust their ass and develop into solid rotation guys at DT.

          • I think he definitely can. He’s a tiny bit short compared to our DE guys and if his weight was accurate at 255 junior year he put on 21 lbs in less than 2 years without college program guidance. At the spring game he looked fit to me, no big gut really.

          • The polynesians tend to have large frames so that’s why I was wondering. Lolohea did look pretty big as well. But I think he is a better fit at DE. Also saw that Saluni is 6’3 270 now. That’s a huge OLB. I wonder if he makes the move to DE especially since stover moved to OLB. Maybe he’s just out of shape from his mission tho.

          • Agreed. I think Lolohea is really good in the DE spot, he’s just got that natural aggression that is great on the edge. Also agree that Saluni needs to move if he is in shape. From recruiting it looks like the coaches really want height on the line. The DT are 6′-6’5 and the DE are 6-2′-6’6. OLB are the same height as the De but 215-240.

          • I didnt realize Stover was an OLB now. I really liked him out of HS. I was picturing he and Lolohea as the syarting DEs when they’re Jrs

          • Skelton and Anderson are RS JRs just looked it up. I wonder if Hennessy is ready to contribute? I see that he’s up to 280 now.

          • I would be surprised to see Rawls play at DT as there are guys that seem like a more natural fit and size. We now have schad, Bennett, Hennessy, Anderson, and Skelton. There are also guys like shippen and Sandberg that are in the 280 to 290 range.

          • I only say it cause he rotated in at DT last year when he was significantly lighter. Just ball parking about 1/3rd of his downs were at DT

          • Oh I didn’t know that. I thought they were saying he was more of a pass rusher. Maybe he’s a passing down DT.

  17. Was told there’s a poster on blitz who is predicting Paea this morning. Wonder where that idea came from?
Like I said, we’ll find out soon enough. It could be anybody, but Paea is my best guess right now. But just a guess.

If I learn anything this morning, I flush that one away and post a new gut bomb, but I need to get some actual work done today.

  18. If it is Paea, is swapping Whittley for him a good exchange for us? Is it a talent downgrade but less unknowns around health & availability?

  19. I’m flushing the Paea prediction and going with Keonte Schad now.
Hopefully no more changes this morning. This has been a tough one.

  20. Another(unrelated) gut bomb. Had a big breakfast this morning. I predict the Beavs will be adding TE Gabe Milbourn to their 2021 class in the near future.

  21. Division I Baseball Committee announces championship host sites
Arizona, quacks, Stanford all among the 20 sites from which 16 will be selected.
Oh, and Gonzaga also deemed worthy.

  22. I dont know that they’re totally done with the DT transfer recruiting, but I think the next area you’ll see activity is transfer Safety. Need to backfill now that Riley is down.

    • Yeah…safety was rough last year. And rough for a long time, really. We could use an impact player in a big way.

I’m guessing expectations were high for Riley, but he hasn’t played a snap for us yet, has he? All projection?

      • No he hasn’t played he opted out last season. He was one of four DBs from the JC ranks that were supposed to come in and contribute. The other 3 seem to be doing well from what I’ve read so far.

      • Will Moku Watson ever play? Listed as a safety. Had a couple of other Pac-12 offers out of high school. I never hear about him though other than I think a practice squad stand out a year or two ago. Redshirted the last two seasons but played in 9 games in 2018.

        • He wasn’t good in limited action. Must not care too much about football and playing otherwise I would’ve thought him to transfer or at least move up the depth chart. Seems like this system must require a different kind of safety from the old scheme as just about all of them transferred. Manning and cotton both had other power 5 offers if I remember correctly and Moran was a fairly highly rated safety as well.

  23. Saw that schad was an all academic bug ten. Hopefully that translates to him learning the playbook quickly as that would be the only thing keeping him from starting or significant playing time. It would be nice to get a guy with 2 or 3 years eligibility to add as well.

Tracy Smith has been ejected from tonight’s game after arguing a foul tip was actually a swing & miss. Bench and fans have not been too kind to the home plate umpire so far this evening. Oregon State leads 6-4 heading to the bottom of the 5th.

    • I just started checking the stats so I didn’t see his performance before but to put 2 on with walks in the 8th when your leading by 1 is awful baseball. Its 1 thing to get beat but to beat yourselves is just terrible and it’s hard to watch as a fan.

  24. Beav bullpen is criminally mismanaged by Dorman. He has absolutely no feel for the internal dynamics of the game. Pulls the hot pitcher too soon, keeps a cold pitcher in too long, etc.

Didn’t mundt get a double play and a groundouts? I wouldn’t necessarily say he was dominating or anything. I wasn’t able to watch so I’m not sure how he looked but it’s not like he came in and started striking guys out. I would’ve been fine with leaving him in but at the same time you have the all time saves leader so in a way it’s a little crazy not to use him. Hindsight is 20/20 but I don’t think you could say it’s a bad idea to bring in the best closer in school history. Like I said hindsight is 20/20 but if mundt was left in you could argue why didn’t they bring in the top closer.

      • I was watching so thats why I said it. He looked dominant. No, he wasn’t striking its out but getting a double play I’d say is more impressive given the situation. I think he threw 5 pitches to get those outs.

        • “getting a double play” is one thing, creating and being a big part of that double play was beautiful!
I’m surprised there wasn’t more of a reaction here to that DP………it was, for me, a rare high point this season.
Certainly showed Mundt had confidence, maybe even swagger.

Stikeouts are great, but don’t ensure W’s (ex: Beavs lead the PAC with over 10 K’s/9 innings). Home runs are great, but not often the basis is a top level team.

          DP’s ……………gotta luv ’em, just because !

  25. 10
    12

I would expect Mundt to enter the transfer portal as soon as he leaves the locker room tonight…

Dorman can be shown the door asap. Abel couldn’t throw strikes and when he finally settled down, they pull him for the next guy who can’t throw strikes and leave him in 2 batters too long, the Mundt saves the day, so take him out too soon of course. Mully can’t start nor can he close this year. Yeskie was Mully’s secret weapon with the pitch calls and mentality. Mully has lost his edge and so have the bullpen as a group.
What a little league display of poor pitching and horrible mismanagement. It was pretty easy to see going into the 8th, and then expected the flameout once Mundt didn’t go in the 9th.

And for the loyalist who want to give Mitch a break all this year, “it’s only his first year, sort of…”- this game typifies the problems that aren’t getting any better. I’d say about 10 games this year have been lost just by coaching alone, many more because these pitchers all of a sudden pitch like they are 12 again. Are they overthinking and not just trusting their skillset? IS Dorman teaching them to out-think themselves thereby diminishing personal confidence in their “stuff”?

    • 1
      1

Agreed. Pitching mismanagement keeps happening. It’s like he’s operating on a theory and refused to adjust.

  26. 9
    3

What a fuck up by our coaches……..Again!
Don’t give me the “he’s learning” excuse. A decent little league coach could have managed this game better. WTF?
He’s not learning and making the same mistakes over and over. No feel for the flow of the game. Ugh.

    • 4
      1

It’s hard to argue against putting in OSU’s career saves leader to close out the game. IMO…this is on Mully not Droman.

      • I agree. You put him in thinking that he’s going to do what he has done historically. Sometimes they don’t have it or sometimes the other guys just make plays and you have to tip your hat to them. I don’t think you can say that putting in the best closer in school history is a bad coaching decision. That said I wouldn’t have minded him leaving in mundt. Who knows what would’ve of happened tho. I think I saw that those batters that mulholland faced were all above .300.

      • 2
        2

if it was the Mulholland of 2018 or 2019, I would agree with you. But Mulholland has been scraping by all year trying to get to the all time saves leader. Not the same pitcher. Canham puts him in there on reputation. Kinduva Riley thing to do. Same with starting Abel every Friday night. He hasn’t deserved that slot since mid March. Abel should be the Sunday guy you throw out there after your best two starters get a series victory in hand; Abel (again, 2021 version) hopefully can deliver a series victory or a series sweep. He has vastly underperformed this year putting the Beavs behind the 8 ball every conference series.

        • “Canham puts him in there on reputation.”
Entire comment is spot on, but that’s the heart of it.
I’ve been asking for most of the season “how long is Abel the Fri Night guy?”

Reputation and misplaced loyalty, probably in the case of Mully but for certain with regard to Abel. He obviously showed talent and went the extra mile in the CWS but he’s not the same guy this year.
Now, some have decried the lack of run support for Abel, that’s valid. But, if he is putting pressure on himself and not effective, then isn’t there a point where a decent manager puts him in a less pressure filled situation…like move him to Sunday starter?

  27. 2
    2

Can someone give me a synopsis of what happened? Was it on Dorman or Mitch, or both? Reading above it sounds like a pitcher was taken out too early again. Who makes those decisions ultimately? I’d think Mitch, but I don’t know their arrangement.

  28. 2
    1

Abel was wild most of the game until 6th when he retired the side for the first time.
Next guy struggled through the 7th, gives up a double and a run, yet came out in the 8th and promptly walked 2 batters.
Mundt came in in the 8th with guys on 1st and 2nd no outs. Turned a quick double play and struck out the next batter. Mundt looked like he was ready to close out the 9th with ease, actually throwing strikes and nasty vibe about him.
Mully struck out the first batter but also hit him and ump called hom out for leaning into a breaking ball, then Mully gives up 4 consecutive hits, no visit, no break of momentum, 3 run bomb and game over.

  29. 5
    2

Additional comment regarding Mundt vs Mulholland…Mike Parker was observing how the coaches had already gone with Mundt rahter than leaning on Mulholland either last week or the series before. Parker expected Mundt to start the 9th at least but Mulholland came in and wasn’t fooling anyone. Mundt maybe gets an out and then go to Mully but they did the opposite for the 9th than the 8th when the guy starting the 8th was already struggling. Mundt was dealing, at least let him start the 9th and get 1 or 2 outs. I think this is a reflection of the overthinking from the major league level going with right/left match-ups over the hot guy regardless of matchups. It is on coaching to me, not just the players, Mully needs to throw strikes, but Mundt was, don’t fix what isn’t broken in real time…

    • Seems wrong to me. In the majors all the pitchers are good and game ready most of the time, they don’t have as many bad outings. College you don’t have that level of pitching available.

    • 4
      2

listening to Parker at the ninth half inning, you could tell he was silently praying that Mundt stay in there. Parker’s a company man, and he’s not going to say anything critical in public, but he has eyes and can see what’s going on. Atrocious line up making, pitching decisions, etc. all year.

  30. 10
    2

tonight’s lackluster performance shows how the team has become demoralized by the lack of effective coaching. Likely the same thing tomorrow. As noted above, Canham, who was in the MLB pipeline, has brought that playbook with him to Corvallis; match-ups, analytics, all that crap. He doesn’t watch the game in front of him, he’s too busy trying remember the stat sheet the analytic guys worked up for him before the game.

Canham would have pulled Abel in the 5th inning at Omaha in Game 3. Pitch count, you know.

  31. 4
    6

Must be hard for guys like Armstrong and Mulholland to go from the absolute top in 2018 to finishing out their careers in a shitshow season like this

    • 2
      1

I could see a luck ‘O da Beavs situation happening here. I hope for him he can be healthy and have success but it’s always tough to see that after guys leave.

Has any of the transfers in the last few years go on to be very successful? Is Petras a starter now? Always thought that kid could be real good. Might’ve blown it by flipping. He could be the starting QB this year at OSU.

  32. What could have been this weekend. Still time to blow the lead and get swept! At least they didn’t quit although winning yesterday would have really showed some cahones.

    • That’s the story of the Beavs this year. It’s nice to see them producing runs as of late. They just seem to not be able to put it all together. If the bats are going the pitching sucks or they’re making errors or what not. If they can put well rounded performances together to finish the season they could be a dangerous team. Hopefully they can figure it out and start clicking at the right time like the mens basketball team did.

    • Really they were one bad pitching change in the 9th from winning the series. Baseball is an annoying sport haha

      • They’re not a dominant enough team to overcome errors and poor management. It seems like when the pitching is on they can’t produce runs and when they score runs the pitching gives up way too many. I’m not sure if it’s true but it seems like if they could score at least 5 runs they would be winning most of their games.

        Is Melton back?

        • I think I saw their stats the other day for defense. They were in the top 10 in about 8 different defensive stats like ERA, fielding percentage, strikeouts etc. Lends to the thought that if they don’t beat themselves with walks, HBP, WP and get about 5 runs like I said they could actually be a pretty dominant team.

  33. 2
    5

Is winning only the third game equivalent to the football team losing the game in the first half and then making it close in the second only to lose by 13 points?

      • I can see that side of it. It just feels like after losing the first 2 games, since it’s baseball, you can’t win the series. Losing the series is like a loss overall (sorta like tennis maybe?) just a thought. If you only win 1 out of 3 consistently then you’ll have a terrible record. They are far from that.

      • I got into a little Twitter convo with Joe casey about mundt coming out Friday. He said people that are complaining about that are dumb. Said two Lefties were coming in to start the ninth for asu and mully was the obvious choice. Asked if a coach shouldn’t have used gunderson in that same situation.

        • Thanks fo the perspective! I’m a laymen for sure so it’s interesting. I guess I just don’t get it. If lefty vs righty matters so much why do starters play so many innings? It plays out in the analytics though. Hard to say how much of that is a mental edge due to cultural indoctrination. Is this a thing in other bat type sports?

          • At other levels (not sure about college), it’s common to have major lineup changes depending on whether the pitcher is a righty or lefty. Some batters have major split differences between the two.

          • I’ve always wondered if it would work to use 4-5 pitchers every game throwing 1-2 innings each. Seems like it would keep hitters off balance when they have to face a new pitcher every time (and it would make scouting more difficult).

          • I just wonder how many college teams have that deep and consistent of a bull pen. You have to assume even double A teams would generally be deeper than most college teams right?

          • If I was a lower level college team, I’d roll with no starter and sell recruits on saving their arms and showcasing their ability to throw from the bullpen to pro scouts.

    • Offer list is almost completely power 5. I’m pretty sure he’s the highest rated DT in our history.

Just above Thomas Molesi who never made it due to grades and finished up at Portland state.

    • We’ll see…Whittley has a ton of question marks and might never play another down. However as someone above mentioned, I could definitely see a Luck O Da Beavs scenario where he breaks out with a monster last season. High variation of outcomes. Real upside to his game.

Per BeavGoph it sounds like Schad is more solid starter than impact player. Upgrade for us and I’ll happily take it, but he doesn’t have the same ceiling.

  34. According to Daschel, OSU’s RPI moved up 5 spots to #19 after losing 2 of 3 to ASU.
    Those are some quality losses.

      • Good thing the series was on the road, not only is RPI now 19 but the SOS improved to 30.
Big test (after Portland, which is not an automatic W) coming next weekend at home. Arizona (and Yeskie) comes to Goss with an RPI/SOS of: 6/12. A series win would seem to really improve OSU rankings.

What tricks does Mitch have up his sleeve? Will he stay in the box at 3B? And, if Melton returns how long for him to return to form?

        • Seen a lot of talk here about this… a lot of college head coaches man the 3rd base coach spot themselves. As far as I know managers aren’t out there in the pros. I couldn’t tell you what the right choice is, there probably isn’t a right or wrong here

          • Agree, there is probably no universal hard and fast way to go.
Seems to me it depends on the team dynamics and results.

Canham is around the team all week and he does call more offensive TO’s than we are used to, still, IMHO he should be building his connection to the team. Being in the dugout during actual game time is a better way to do that than being in the box at 3rd.

If it works for him, great………results over time will be a good indicator but so far the question is worth asking.

          • To me a big factor would be being able to keep the focus and engaged. It’s not like there would be a dropoff having someone else at 3b. He already had that screw up with Forrester.

  35. Anyone going to do the beaver state tour tonight with coach Smith and barnes? You have to register but I guess you get to ask them questions. Could be a good opportunity to get some questions that we’ve had on here.

      • For me I’m interested if they want a big 315lb+ space eater in the middle or if they feel fine with guys around 290. Obviously it’s a hard position to recruit and they now have guys closer to 295 range especially with the transfer. Just seems to me a bit odd that they wouldn’t grab a 2* and try to develop if they can’t get higher rated guys and/or bring on some walk ons with a frame that could become that. Kind of reminds me how everyone saw the need for some taller receivers and they just now seem to be addressing it.

        • Their methodology for the line would be really great to get clarification on. Reading recruiting and such it just seems like the goal is most athletic and tall line as possible.

          • Well I mean all teams want tall and athletic players but I get what you’re saying. I would still think that a large space eater would be valued especially for goal line and short yardage situations. Even if they would only be used for like 20 snaps a game. I guess I’m just curious if they’re just striking out pr if they just don’t want another aydon or whittley.

  36. Bitcoin and Joe Rogan have fallen from grace, huh? I think the former still has a massive up move later this year. The latter, probably not.

    • I’ve never listened to him, but it seems like the death knell for Rogan was going exclusive with Spotify. It’s impossible to pass yourself off as an independent voice when you sign on with an establishment organization who censors your content.

Bitcoin has too much institutional momentum to just die on the vine now. Guys with a lot of money don’t like looking stupid, so they’ll do whatever they can to promote it and keep interest up.

        • Side note re: Bitcoin and electricity. A friend of mine from the squadron used to live down the road from me. I stopped by maybe 5 years ago and he had a server bank running 24/7 mining Bitcoin. I had no idea WTF he was talking about. Fast forward, I emailed him about a month ago to ask him how that all panned out. He said he ran it for about 6 months and couldn’t justify the $1500/month electric bill so they bagged it. He gave the servers and whatever coins there were to the dude that helped him finance it.

          So close.

Angry, that’s an interesting comment about Rogan. What would you call an average man today? I think that may be the issue right there.

Rogan speaks to anyone who questions things and doesn’t take it for face value. Not surprising he doesn’t speak to the average man but sad none the less. People now days just accept their reality and don’t realize the value of critical thinking. He doesn’t get crypto and doesn’t claim to be an expert on anything. The fact that people think that any podcast creator is an expert is alarming to say the least. What happened to folks thinking for themselves?

I think XRP will be the future at least for banking and has the most potential. The fact the govt is actively trying to disrupt it, tells you all you should know. Elon brought up the biggest thing in all of this and he is who crashed bitcoin. He brought up electricity use and environmental issues regarding bitcoin. XRP is one the most efficient and will become even more efficient once its implemented more.

If you are just talking ETH vs BTC, than I think ETH is a good option. That is assuming ETH 2.0 goes off without a hitch. Either coin will never lose value. BTC is kinda like gold in that it will always be a finite amount, where ETH has more real world application. If they work out making BTC more efficient, you’ll see even more growth.

Arguably the most important game of the year tonight. Must win at all costs. Loss here means they would need to sweep one of the remaining series to get off the bubble.

I learned this week that the big10 is only playing conference only which is why their rpi is so low. They won’t be a one bid league like I thought so the rpi ranking is a bit misleading.

  38. Projected football depth chart from Gazette-Times:

    https://www.gazettetimes.com/sports/beavers-sports/football/osu-football-predicting-the-beavers-depth-chart-post-spring-ball/article_7dda7796-5468-5d3b-aac5-3551f71ead0f.html

Guessing Gumbs will start if healthy, though all 4 OLB on the two-deep are pretty solid.
Hope that Tongue is able to work into the lineup.
QB really seems wide open right now, hard to project. I hope someone separates and really seizss the job.

    • I don’t really agree with a lot of these predictions. Its way to early to tell with all of the kids that missed camp anyways.

  39. Runners on first and second, no outs, in a game where you’re not hitting anything. Why wouldn’t you sac bunt the runners over?

    • The analytics say you should hit in that situation. I am not sure if it was here but I remember people calling Casey’s affinity for the sac bunt a “wart”.

      • “The analytics” couldn’t possibly have a universal prescription for that situation. It depends on the probability of the next few guys in the order getting hits, and the coach’s feel for how tuned in his guys are on that given day. We had the middle of the order up, so I understand thinking you should swing away. But everyone was having an off night at the same time, so you need to get yourself RISP (especially with K-machine Casey due up with a high probability of no contact).

Not that it matters, because the pitchers threw it all away, anyway.

        • I wasn’t saying if I agreed or not but I do recall people being critical of Casey for so many bunts and the “new school” tends to devalue the sac bunt. I remember Kwan would get on then the team would give up an out to move him to 2nd. With how solid the meat of that lineup was I’d say that was the wrong choice. But I also think Casey had his guys so dialed in on the small ball that the calculation changed some as the possibility of bunting for an out without advancing the runner was lower. I definitely want to see Canham get back to the basics, too many unforced mistakes for sure.

What in the hell is going on with the Beavers? They load the bases against a kid that has a 13.50 ERA and four times as many walks as strikeouts and make him look like Roger Clemens!? Walking away from a bases-loaded-with-one-out inning, an all-to-frequent problem for the Beavers, is just inexcusable against a team struggling to reach .500 in a weak conference. For God’s sake, this is OSU baseball, the most accomplished program for the past two decades with three national championships in 12 years!
The mental outlook that Canham has instilled in these guys, that if they just stick with the process and practice plate discipline regardless of the count or the score, is not serving them well right now. There has to be a point where they decide to battle each pitch, challenge pitchers early in the count and get on base no matter what it takes. There also has to be a point where the coach lays into a player, or his pitching coach, when they are not getting the job done.
I’ve never witnessed an OSU team that is so complacent, so unable to get fired up for a game, as this bunch. That has to come from the top — either Canham is not properly preparing these guys mentally or they have decided collectively that these midweek, non-conference games don’t matter. Well, they matter a lot because by the time this evening is over Oregon State will drop from a tie for fourth-place to sixth, see its RPI dip back down after they just got it somewhat respectable and set themselves up for failure this weekend against one of the most potent offenses in all of college baseball.
When this season ends with the Beavers either not earning a tournament bid or bowing out of the tournament early despite being matched up with the Saint Mary of the Valley girls field hockey team or some other poseur, there needs to be some serious soul searching by the coaching staff, school administration and the players that will return next year.
They have some promising recruits to fill the spaces by departing players like Armstrong, Ober, Pfennings, Verburg, Mulholland, Abel and others, but the coaching staff is going to have to decide whether they are going to continue this failed experiment based on analytics and MLB-style play or return to good old-fashioned OSU baseball concentrating on small ball, elite hitting and defense, and using intellect and a feel for the game in deciding who is going to pitch, when and against what competition.
God I miss Pat and Nate!

      • Not excusing that loss, but……

Please explain how losing a non conference game will drop the Beavers out of a tie for 4th place in the conference down to 6th?

        • When multiple teams have the same conference record, then the NCAA starts looking at other metrics to determine where a team finishes in conference, such as record against those other teams. OSU lost their series against UCLA and Arizona State and their overall record is inferior to the Bruins and Sun Devils too.

“ I’ve never witnessed an OSU team that is so complacent, so unable to get fired up for a game, as this bunch.”

So you didn’t watch Beavers football?

  41. On the bright side all of us being upset because we expect wins and not losses from Beavers Baseball makes us a fan base who is used to winning… something I have never experienced being a Beaver fan before… it is kind of weird.

Saw Jacob Melton is being shut down for the remainder of the season for shoulder surgery.

Should be a pretty brief post season.

    • I hope they get in so they have more practices and games to figure some things out. A year of ups and downs. You make the tourney though and it can carry momentum into the next year plus get some guys post season experience. It could be interesting to see them play out of conference teams to see how they do. Oh wait, we just witnessed that….

  43. It’s funny right after our crypto talk, the market crashed. For anyone who hasn’t got in… This is a good as a time as any. Crypto to me is a long term hold. If you have a few bucks to throw at it, you’ll get an amazing return

    • No, it was already crashing, which is why I talked about it…
Hence “Bitcoin has fallen from grace”…not sure what you’re seeing.

Agree on the returns. This is a big washout of leverage and nothing more. Still this this Fall it’s much higher than the recent highs. Though, it is possible the halving cycle is broken. We shall see.

      • It has really fallen today, not just Bitcoin … Alt coins, ETH, and everything else fell today…. will be buying in cheap… patience will pay handsomely

        • Agree. It’s healthy. And it’s still almost exactly correlated to past cycles, so in a few months we should have the blow off top. I know that seems hard for people to grasp after the past few days, but it’s the likely outcome.

  44. Yeah I’m a little late to the party but I’ve been throwing a few bucks at the different cryptos. Nothing more than a long term gamble, it’s not a lot of $$ to put in in the grand scheme but it could pay off down the line.

I’ve got a couple of customers, younger guys, that bought in to Doge about 5 years ago. I don’t think I’ll get that lucky but it’s certainly paid off for them recently.

    • @NB, those gut bombs are pretty accurate. Did he play this year? Maybe he missed out on offers due to Covid. I don’t really see the point in taking him though.

      • He played, although his season was late in the Spring. There’s film for his games in his HUDL link.

He looks like another Luke Musgrave type guy to me. And Musgrave and Teagan Q wont be around much longer, so you need depth behind them. Only other pass catching TE we have right now is Overman. I dont see anything wrong with him, even if the offers arent top tier. He’ll see playing time in a year or 2. It’s not like we just started recruiting Milbourn. His offer came in March of 2020. He just waited till he was able to visit campus before signing.

          • He’s being used as more of a blocking TE. Not much of a pass catching threat.
JT Byrne is more of a pass catcher, so I could see some duplication there.
But if Teagan Q or Musgrave or both declare early for the draft, you wont have much depth in 2022.

      • We would have been jazzed about this guy under Riley or Anderson. If nothing else Smith et al are much better recruiters. Even the ‘projects’ come in with good size.

  45. In transfer portal land, an interesting name I’ve noticed popping up lately, with several OSU coaches making connections.
    Ohio State Safety Tyreke Johnson.
Was a 5* safety in the 2018 class, with offers from everybody.
Entered the portal about a week or so ago. Hasn’t been able to crack the rotation at Ohio State, so seems to be a case of searching for more playing time.
Oh, and OSU needs immediate help at Safety especially with Johnathan Riley out all season with that knee injury.

    • Looking a little closer at him, I’d call him a corner rather than safety. Sounds like ue tore his meniscus at the start of year 2 at Ohio State and when he came back from injury, he was buried on the depth chart. Must not have had a very optimiatic outlook after spring camp if he decided to leave just recently.

        • Go west young man! Follow the Oregon Trail to the Willamette Valley, settle in the confines of a half-finished stadium! PT awaits you!

        • Based on him being previously rated a 5* recruit, and how many teams are pursuing him, i wouldn’t put our chances as very high. Plus he’s from Florida originally. but it’s good to see we are in the conversation at least.

  46. Regarding Bitcoin…the charts are scary. 20k in play. Be careful. It’s unlikely but possible now that everything has broken. Still think we see 100k+ in the Fall, though.

Whittley committing tomorrow morning. He will choose between the two offers he received: Michigan and UAB. I wonder if Michigan feels they reacted a little too quickly. Seeing the offers or lack there of makes me feel a little better about him leaving.

    • He commuted to UM. Better exposure for him with a team desperate for a NT. With UM taking a chance on him, I wonder if there were serious disagreement between him and team doctors around his diagnosis or treatment of his heart tumor. Basically, the team won’t let him play, but UM will as they won’t just wait a scholarship on him even for just a year. Was if the same will happen with Aquino with the WBB team.
