Go Beavs? A program in decline…Oregon ranked #11 and OSU now not even ranked. Need a sweep here. Minimum 2 of 3. I don’t have faith in Canham managing well enough to get that done. Hope to be wrong. To me this seems like Ralph Miller transitioning to Anderson right before our eyes.

On a side note, OSU should never hire anyone named Anderson/Andersen.

Need a sweep. Won’t get one. I do predict a final series win though. Copy and pasting from the previous thread about hosting sites……….

    per Kendall Rogers…………

The NCAA will have predetermined Regional and Super Regional sites for the 2021 NCAA Baseball Tournament, sources told D1Baseball on Monday.

The move by the NCAA comes as no surprise to anyone who has been following NCAA championships so far during the current academic calendar. Though championships have varied in different Divisions, the one constant at the Division I level has been the presence of predetermined postseason sites.

That approach, with health and safety in mind, is coming to college baseball.

Article is behind a paywall and I’m a cheap bastard, so…….

I can guarantee with state restrictions in mind there will be ZERO host sites in Oregon, California or Washington. Arizona is probably a go.

You can bet your left nut that a fuck ton of host sites will be in the southeast.

    Don’t shoot the messenger.

  2. Mitch’s ability to continue recruiting at a high level is really going to be the ultimate decider. Casey had the allure of success and getting guys to the big leagues. Mitch has a small window of time where he can rely on the successful program reputation.

One thing that gives me hope: Mitch “recruits” (guys that he at least retained as commitments, I don’t know about his involvement in their recruitment) make up our 2 best hitters and arguably 3 of our top 5 pitchers.

There was a short time period though after the back to backs where PC started recruited higher talent but they didn’t have the attitude and work ethic. You saw him go back the grinders and that led to the 2017 and 2018 success. If guys didn’t like what was asked of them (Nick to play 2b) then they could leave. Mitch will have to find that middle ground.

Well, at least Anderson had one good year and a tourney bid thanks to having GP still for his senior season. If Canham doesn’t make the tourney, he will not even meet Jimmy’s dubious standard of one-year success before the shit-fest started (i.e step decline)!

  4. Next years group of freshman ranked #16 in the country. Probably will be some draft hits (Reed) but could have some immediate impact.

    • Beavs could benefit from the pandemic as west coast prospects didn’t get to play much in the past year. Less time for scouts to get out and see them, less chance of them moving up draft boards. Few played travel ball so there’s an increased chance of getting him to come. The unknown is what he wants to do. But I would say his chances of heading to campus are decent.

I still think Canham could be the guy. I agree through mismanagement we have lost a few games that should have been Ws. But he is coming from MiLB where winning is of secondary concern to developing talent. I think a full season or two to break old habits is acceptable. I feel like he has been pulling in decent talent. And as I have said in the past firing him now would make the OSU job toxic.

MC should get his butt into the dugout and stop coaching at third base. He needs to be interacting and keeping his finger on the pulse of his team. At UCLA his dubious decision “coaching” third cost us the series. I wish he had hired an older asst. coach who had previously been a HC in college; his own Bailey. Somebody not afraid to challenge or correct him if needed.

  7. Lineups posted, Casey the only left handed batter (.289) vs the trojan lefty.
Armstrong to leadoff, Boyd the dh. Gretler, McMahan, Jones the bottom third of the lineup.

This is probably the weakest team Abel will face the rest of this season, be nice to see him dominate for at least 5+ innings. At this stage it’s a “see it to believe it” kind of thing.

No word on if Canham will coach from 3b, nor any indication if he’ll be clean shaven either!
    Go Beavs!

  8. Lol I just checked the box score and saw Abel hit another batter. He’s consistent with that, if nothing else.

  9. Abel’s numbers: 6 innings, 6 hits, 4 K’s, 2 BB, 1 WP, 1 HBP
All this vs the team which ranks #9 in the PAC for BA and runs scored this season.

OK, he didn’t get run support and may have been pressing but we’ve seen this act before. How long is he the Friday night guy?

  10. Top of the order due up for Beavs in the b8, feels like do or die time.
Canham at 3b leaves someone else to calm/motivate/psych the Beav batters……..strange.

  11. Nice play in the clutch to steal a win there. You’re going to win many games with only 2 hits, but good teams find a way.

  12. might’ve have saved post-season prospects with that comeback. Not as gruesome a give away by SC as ours to UCLA last week, but I’ll take it as recompense.

  13. Much like the Beavs did last Friday night, SC gave this one away.

We’ll take it.. The baseball gods can be cruel sometimes. Go get the series win tomorrow.

  14. This new twitter update really blows. It pretty much makes it impossible to run some of the functions this recruiting account depends on to operate.

Does anybody know any python programmers who’d be willing to design a program for free for the good of the cause?

  15. In passing drills, most of Nolan’s passes over 15 yards come out wobbly and a little slow, while Vidlaks are more crisp and almost always perfect spirals.

    Shorter passes they’re pretty even

      • Did they show either 2 minute drill?
The Nolan offense started with an offensive holding call and had another false start. Then Nolan was nearly picked off by Grant on his final pass.
Vidlaks offense made it most of the way down the field. 1 negative yard running play. Most passes were completions. 1 throw away and 1 just over the TEs hands. Ended with a field goal.

      • 5
        1

And lame PSA or school commericials ad naseum because the P-12 Network can’t get legit companies to waste advertising dollars with them!

  16. Red zone drill.
Nolan needs only 1 pass for a TD across the middle to Musgrave. Musgrave was double covered but made a great catch.
Vidlak pretty much only passed to Champ. Several short completions but ends with a FG.
2nd Vidlak drive had a nice 25 yd completion to Gould I believe, and a short aFenwicj run but ended with a FG again.

Then my kids had to take a leak so i missed some action.

  17. Bradford only doing drills. No Harrison or Beason. Or the transfer from Georgia. Hard to gage the offense when missing so many pieces.

    • Is that how all of these are? This is the first time I’ve bothered to watch one. In my mind scrimmage means some sort of a game.

      • Part of it was due to lack of players at key positions.

Most spring games are situational games. Start at the 20, redzone, etc.

But with only two QBs it was impossible to do much.

      • There was an offense vs defense game that was the centerpiece- though the game was centered around red zone drills. Defense won.

I think they’d have done more with more WRs available. Pretty much all the catches went to Champ & some walk-on I’d never heard of.

  18. 4
    3

Vidlak looks like a legit prospect. We have options at the QB position.

It would have been awesome if the girl turned down the proposal from Hodgins!

  19. A couple of things I noticed in the edge write up. Not sure if it was a mistake but I think they said sione lolohea was starting DT. I feel like he was coming in light for a DE so not sure if he put on a bunch of weight or what. Also Reichner was the DT on second team and I think he was down to like 257 or something. Size at the DT position still probably the biggest question mark coming in or at least for me. Also I think semisi saluni was starting at OLB I think or maybe he was 2nd team. I feel like I remember him coming in weighing more than lolohea.

Overall looking at this team they should be better at every position with depth and experience aside from RB just because obviously Jefferson was a beast. The secondary is still a little bit questionable as far as starters go but I do think depth there is better. Seems like there is some good options to replace the corners lost with jones, Wright, Forrest, Austin, Russell, and Robinson. Safety is still a little up in the air with who can be the starter opposite of grant and fill in for him when he moves to nickel. Someone needs to step up there between hardge, riley, julian, Oladipo, and Arnold.

  20. Claunch earning his pay!
Especially on that third out, probably on the rundown as well…doubt throwing to Dukart would have led to a different outcome.

    • Got the feeling Canham wanted the L on L and would have pulled Hjerpe for the following right handed batter no matter what happened there.
Anyway, Hjerpe left after 82 pitches.

  21. Nice seeing the bats come alive some today. Meckler with the 3rd home run of the night. Beavs up 9-7 into the 9th. Mulholland comes in.

    • I’ve seen enough from Mundt that I would not pull him late in a game if he’s throwing strikes and getting outs.

Nothing against Mulholland. But Mundt is the closer next year or if Mulholland is doing his “fishing” for strikes.

Got the series win. Needed that. A sweep tomorrow would be gravy.

    • And yes you are correct. Mundt’s stuff was absolutely filthy and almost unfair in the 9th.

      Beautiful to watch that

      • Calm your tits.

ASU, Arizona and Stanford to finish the conference slate.

Not holding my breath for a good run these last 11 games. If they can manage 6-5 or 5-6 id call it a success.

        • 6
          1

I’ll keep them body temp. I’m absolutely fine with them splitting the rest of the games. 37-20 would be a fine result for me. That would be a great result for Canham’s first full year.

Into to the stretch run now. Can’t make a top 8 seed and only winning out can get a host bid but that may be too little too late with the ncaa announcing probable host sites soon. Outside of losing out, they should make it in.

BIG10 baseball is the equivalent to PAC12 football. Highest RPI is Iowa at 55. Ouch. Looks like a 1 bid league. But good for the PAC12. Should get 6 teams in. WSU has to win out to make it in.

The checklist to making it in,
Beavs can’t lose to Portland. Ranked 211 in the RPI.
Win at least one game in each series would put them in as a 3 seed.
Win one road series, puts them in as a weak 2 seed
Win the home series and lose both road series, puts them in as a middle 2 seed.
Win all series puts them in as a strong 2 seed.

    • I don’t really care what their record is or if they get a top whatever seed. I’d like to see more consistent hitting, Abel return to form, and Dorman/bullpen get a solid game plan. If these things don’t happen then they will lose out in the post season sooner than they should. It was great to see them win a game on Friday that they didn’t deserve to win. Gotta be able to win in different ways. And last night barely any offense and still had a great chance until the 8th happened. Pfennigs kept them in it.

    • Disagree. P12 gets 5 not 6 and if Beavs only win 3 more conference games plus beat UP, they’re on the bubble with 35 wins. 36 should get them in although I don’t trust the process. Win out and win the conference, should be good enough for top 8 seed… 41 win and P12 champs is top 8 seed especially considering they’d have to sweep ASU, UA, and Stanford… doesn’t matter because it won’t happen. Win 8 of next ten, should be good enough to host. 6-7 looking at 2 seed. 5 is a 3 seed. 4 and we’re out

      • Host sites are supposed to be named this week. It’s too late for the Beavs to be considered, the time to impress the committee was the series vs quacks, UCLA, and Anteaters. Eight of the last ten or ten of ten, there is nothing the Beavs do in the final three series that will change that.

Additionally, as someone already mentioned the State of Oregon’s restrictions for COVID likely eliminate any Oregon team from hosting, especially one not ranked in the top 10 or so.

At this point it’s all about getting healthy (Melton) and getting hot, both at the plate and on the mound. Once the post season begins anything can happen. As a two or three seed at a venue outside of Oregon it’s hard to see this team advancing but time will tell.

        https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/college/baseball/2021/04/06/ncaa-baseball-softball-regional-hosts-to-be-predetermined/115675000/

  23. If we’re still sitting around 20-25 in the RPI at the end of the year, I’d say that’s a successful regular season.

    • He’ll have to work to hold onto this class with two assistants leaving and they were good recruiters.

The 2021 class also gets a bump as they signed AJ Marotte away from UW when they fired their coach. Marotte is ranked #63 overall in ESPN rankings.

      • Three days short of a month since Brian Holsinger headed to Montana, any word on his or Katie Faulkner’s replacements?
Seems Scott would always have a list handy, seems OSU is a pretty good destination, seems the process is a little slow.
As said before though, Scott’s been through this kind of thing before.

        • This time it could take a little bit of time to replace two and I think Holsinger was his #2? I think it took a couple months to replace Mandy.

But he’ll need to take the same approach as Tinkle. At least one of them has to be a younger coach who can get out and recruit non stop. Social media savvy and able to travel a lot. The other can be a x’s o’s type coach.

          • Thanks, didn’t remember how long it took to replace Mandy.
Of course, some here (lookin’ at you angry) feel she was irreplaceable.

          • Tinkle needs someone to create a buzz because the program doesn’t speak for itself (although this past run should help a bit) Rueck’s program demands respect much like when Pat Casey was recruiting. It is important to be relatable but it is also important that they fit the program and can help develop the players in Rueck’s way.

  24. Hey Nice. You have any scuttlebutt or feelings for our chances landing Otton, Loveland or Velling?

Edit: wow that was some carnage on misspelling

    • I dont have a good sense for which TE we’ll land yet(assuming you mean, Ryan Otton, Colston Loveland and Jack Velling?)
      Lots of good options.
Loveland did have a radio interview about a month ago on the Andrew Nemec show. He sounded pretty impressed with Corvallis when he took an unofficial visit here, and his mom seemed to be a fan too. Reminded them of a slightly larger version of the small town they’re from in Idaho, plus being near the coast while still being somewhat close to home seemed like a plus. At the time, OSU sounded like a favorite, even with the Alabama offer.

Otton and Loveland both have official visits scheduled. Velling I havemt checked on yet, but ai would assume he’s coming too. Dont sleep on Jacob Newell though. He will have an unofficial visit in June, but it’s essentially an official visit. It’s only unofficial because it doesnt make sense to use one of your 5 officials when your travel is about a 40 minute drive.

      Link to Loveland interview:
      https://www.audacy.com/1080thefan/podcasts/recruiting-with-andrew-nemec-20364/colston-loveland-4-te-out-of-idaho-364923279

    • Fits with what I was seeing last week, with the increased activity around DT transfer recruiting. Figured it was a sign Whitley might not be available next year.
Even though he says he is leaving, i wonder if it’s more a product of the team politely saying he’s not going to see the field next season and if he wants to play, it will need to be somewhere with lower demands for his playing time?

      https://angrybeavs.com/athletics/16184#comment-350433

      • Maybe he’s not entirely medically cleared? The OSU athletic dept does not take heart issues lightly ever. Can’t have another death. Chai Baker never got cleared at OSU, Aquino looks like she won’t ever get cleared either.

Good info NiceBeaver! Thank you for sharing. It stings to lose Whittley, but I’m glad to hear how active we are on the DT transfer portal. I know it has been said hundreds of times, but it would be HUGE to add a DT transfer or two

        • If I had to rank our chances with some of the recent DT transfer portal options, I would say Josh Rogers from a&m is at the top, with Lamonte McDougel out of WSU in 2nd.
I dont think Jay Hardy from Auburn has any interest and I dont think Phil Paea from Michigan has enough experience to be more than a backup this year.
Totally out are Jacob Noble (already committed to Syracuse) and Tony Fair (has a top 3 that doesnt include OSU.)

          • Jacob Nobel is a typo, should read Dajon Terry to Syracuse.

2 other possible DT transfers, both from Minnesota. Keonte Schad and Royal Silver.

    • Great, so we are thin at DT, so he leaves? I would think it has to be medically related. Even if he sees transfers coming in he could still play a good amount. The staff better than a couple coming in that are ready to play NOW. The way the offense looked Saturday and unknown at rb, need the defense to play an equal part in keeping the team in games.

I saw earlier today California is running a 38 billion surplus. Is this due to the weed tax? So much for that narrative that they’re a failed, bankrupt welfare State.

    • 11
      1

Nope, this is all thanks to the Fed and the K-shaped recovery.

      Courtesy of the NYT:
California relies heavily on income tax, as opposed to property or sales tax. The vast majority of the state’s income tax revenue comes from California’s wealthiest residents. (Almost half of the personal income tax the state collects comes from the top 1 percent of the state’s earners.)

Wealthy Californians, by and large, haven’t stopped making money during the pandemic. They have benefited from a soaring stock market and an I.P.O. boom.

Ask the not super-rich people leaving the state what they think of California.

      • We just had a discussion about if Comrade Kate is intentionally prolonging the Rona shutdowns to get as much fed $$ as possible to dump into the tier 1 PERS black hole. Last I looked it was in the neighborhood of $28 billion unfunded and rising.

    • 1
      1

Fed prints money…sends some to states….market goes up……..and you have budget surplus at the state level.
From the WSJ editorial last Feb:
“Add the $350 billion windfall that will soon flow to state and local governments from the $1.9 trillion Biden relief bill, and the states will be swimming in cash…”
“…California already has tax revenue coming in above its pre-pandemic level, thanks to a buoyant stock market and capital gains. But it will receive another $27 billion from federal taxpayers, or 17% of the state’s entire general fund revenue…”

So, as long as federal taxpayers continue to bail California out with inflated currency, no failed welfare state….

  26. Somebody was kind enough to take the Pac12 Spring game broadcast and edit out all of the commercials and interviews. You’re left without about 3+ minutes of offensive plays and Isaac Hodgins proposing to his finace. Total run time is less than 5 minutes. amazing how much filler they crammed into that broadcast. what garbage

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HLtHT23B5i4

  27. Just looked at our visitors list and saw how highly rated David Bailey was. Any more info on this guy? Cause if we were to land him he would be the best guy smith has got by a long shot in recruiting rankings wise.
