The NCAA moratorium on scheduled campus visits has ended. I don’t know the exact date, but when things shut down in March 2020, they have remained off limits until June 1st 2021.
With all of the 2021 class who missed out on visits, plus 2022 recruits finally able to hit campuses, this will be a busy month for OSU and every other team.
I’ll try to keep a running tab on updates as they come through this week. I wouldn’t read a whole lot into the unofficial vs official visits. Most local guys are coming on unofficial visits, only because it doesn’t make a ton of sense to use up an official visit when you can easily drive a few hours to see campus. This way they can save their official visits for further away locations, if needed. They also could still come to OSU later in the fall to catch a game on an official visit.
So far, week 1 visitors include(subject to change):
June 1st:
Demarcus Houston – 2023 CB from Albany, OR (unofficial)
June 2nd:
Kage Casey – 2022 OL from Clackamas, OR (unofficial)
June 4th – 6th:
Jerrale Powers – 2022 TE/WR from Duncanville, TX
Quincy Wright – 2022 DT from Duncanville, TX
Jimmy Valsin – 2021 WR Commit from Duncanville
Easton Mascarenas – 2021 LB Commit from Mission Viejo, CA (unconfirmed at this point)
Cole Prusia – 2022 WR Commit from Tualatin, OR (unofficial)
Jason White – 2021 OL Commit from Orange, CA
Dave Iuli – 2022 OL from Puyallup, WA (unofficial)
Hudson Cedarland – 2022 OL from Gig Harbor, WA (unofficial)
Jack Velling – 2022 TE from Seattle, WA (unofficial)
Mark Nabou – 2022 OL from Seattle, WA (unofficial)
Ian Hershey – 2022 K from Idaho (unofficial)
Please keep your comments recruiting related and use the prior thread for unrelated topics
Fat chance of that…this is AngryBeavs after all!
How come there are guys who have already signed coming for a visit? Is it because they hadn’t visited before?
Free vacation
I dont htink anybody from the 2021 class was able to have an official visit because of the Covid shutdown. Just my assumption, but I’m guessing the team is allowed to host visits for them still since they didnt use their allotment of 2021 visits.
I noticed yesterday that Jay Toia from USC said part of why he left USC is because he was never allowed to visit any of his top schools, so he committed to USC without really having a full recruiting experience. (That and conflict with the DL coach didn’t help). So now he’s getting out to see more schools.
This game is won in the trenches so I hope they can bring in more beef on both sides of the ball, but especially on defense right now.
2022 kicker from Idaho who visited campus today.
https://twitter.com/ianhershey10/status/1399816299245555712?s=20
One of the unofficial OL visitors who was supposed be here this coming weekend committed to UW today. Seems doubtful he bothers coming to OSU now.
https://twitter.com/mark_nabou/status/1399849197122113536
I should have known you were on it NB, my bad.
Another kicker who visited today. I know there was also an OLineman who visited. I believe it was Jacob Strand from Canby, OR but havent verified.
https://twitter.com/EthanMoczulski/status/1399892143334821888?s=20
Totally missed this last night. Confirmation that Jacob Strand was in Corvallis for a visit, as he picked up an offer too.
https://twitter.com/Jacob_Strand_/status/1399943753071136769
Also, I think this calls for a gut bomb. No idea what the timing will be, but I think Strand will be a Beav.
I really doubt Mark Nabou will be visiting now that he committed to Washington but I could be wrong. June is going to be wild.
“Lodi Dodi” on Twitter feed. Lol. Well done!
Second the big mother freaking tackle hahahaha
Ha, glad you liked it. Just messing around with this free animation program. It’s palate is pretty limited and there’s alot of trial and error. Writing a script using text to speech can be really challenging.
Spoiler alert. Today, Coach Smith will confront Mario Cristobal after he’s caught spying on practice.
Ha what?
There’s a new one today. I’m having fun painting Smith as the small tough guy. He bitch slaps Mario Cristobal in the latest episode.
https://twitter.com/BeavRecruiting/status/1400131059996512258?s=20
Hilarious. It’s definitely Coach Smith Time since Dame Time has ended.
Nice. Haha. But nothing about tartan endzones??? That’s our path to 5-star DTs.
I’ll need to incorporate tartan into the next one.
Whatever happened to the guy on here who named himself “tartan end zone”?
He was a bit nuts and was also Benny the Beaver (the actual mascot) in the 80s. I’m not sure what happened to him, but my guess would be he’s now in Q-anon and stormed the Capitol, possibly in his Benny suit.
We need pictures of that nightmare fuel super old school Benny storming the Capitol.
I know…I keep imagining it now that I wrote that, and it’s making me lol…that 1950s, raggedy, smelly suit storming the Capitol.
I’d put $$ on the spaz tartan guy being Swammi.
Haha…no doubt.
Is it worth it to subscribe to beavers edge for recruiting news?
No.
Nicebeav is ahead of them. They practically get their info from him.
I scheduled a Fort Worth Regional thread for tomorrow morning.
Fantastic new episode of Into the Woods speaking about Wetzler working with Greg Warburton. I wonder if Canham is using a counselor as well for players. Seems huge in a sport like baseball.
http://sportsenergygroup.com/sec/greg-warburton/
Aisea Moa out of Utah was on campus today for an unofficial visit. 2022 OLB/ATH with offers from Utah/BYU/CSU/UtahSt who is verbally committed to Utah currently. Was offered by OSU on his trip too.
https://n.rivals.com/content/prospects/2022/aisea-moa-246965
Maurice Calloo has entered the NBA draft. Dont know if he hired an agent or not
https://twitter.com/kylecohenNBA/status/1400174631429066756?s=20
As he should, to get an evaluation but he’ll return to school. I’ve always said he’s got the most pro potential out of any of the players. Big man who can run the floor, shoot from deep and a good free throw shooter.
I think Calloo’s future is playing pro hoops internationally. While he has size at 6’10”, he plays a lot smaller than 6’10”. Also, he doesn’t have the willingness to play D aggressively. The NBA is full of 3-and-D guys. Callao can hit the 3 ball, but he will really have to up his D to play in the NBA. His game seemed best suited for Asia where they jack up 3’s and don’t play much defense.
The guy I see as having a possible NBA future is Alatishe. His athleticism jumps off the page, even against high level D1 players. If I was him, I would be in the gym hoisting a thousand 3’s a day. He still has a super long ways to go in that respect, but he has up to two more years to try to add that to his repertoire. If he added that element to his game, he might land on an NBA roster given his athleticism and willingness to defend.
Ah, damn, Coolio!
He’ll be back, there’s like 300 guys who declared early. Add in seniors and international prospects. Only 64 draft picks each year, it’s easy math.
CO 2024 in state WR from Lakeridge WR Joey Olson visited was offered by us today. He goes to my HS and is best friends with my brother. Definitely someone to watch in the future as he can be one of the highest recruited players ever out of Oregon. We also could have a solid chance of landing him possibly. His other offers are ASU, Louisville, and Penn state.
He looks pretty good. https://247sports.com/Video/Joey-Olsen-Lakridge-OR-High-School-2020-freshman-season-10396155/
Oregon recruiting him? What’s his feelings about that program? Just based off his douchey face (no offense) I can see him going there.
He’s not douchey trust me lmao. Oregon has definitely had contact with him and I can probably see him going on a visit and offering soon. He does have connection with Bryce Caufield who is a 2021 TE PWO to OSU and they have apparently talked about him coming here but idk we still have a while until he makes a decision.
Remind your buddy how many WR go the nfl from osu. Quacks don’t develop talent as you know. Thanks for the info. Coach Smith will get him big numbers.
Really know how to attract recruits angry. Lol wtf
I said “no offense”…
With all due respect!!
It’s in the Geneva Convention!
Bless your heart
Mason Graham visiting June 25th. Defensive lineman who also wrestles. I believe he goes to the same high school Jake Overman went to.
https://247sports.com/player/mason-graham-46110532/
We only offered the #2 kicker in the country a PWO offer?
You only need kickers after you score…
that’s my thought too. make it an offer he can’t refuse and give him a scholarship. kickers are often the top point scorer on the team. If he’s that good, take the gamble and offer him now rather than making him show up as a PWO and risk not earning a scholarship, cause he probably won’t end up coming here on a PWO.
Didn’t Adam Vinatieri just retire as the all time point scorer in NFL history? Probably helps that he played for about 50 years, but still
Wasn’t choukair a top kicker coming out of high school? Didn’t work out too well for us.
So do you not want top prospects because you were burned by Simi Kuli?
The burn is so deep…
Didn’t say that. I just think kickers can be developed through repetition if they have a strong mentality. I wouldn’t be against offering him but could be a waste of a scholarship that other schools aren’t.
Can he hit 50+ consistently and kick it out the back pf the end zone?
Pretty much any P5 kicker is considered a 5* kicker by the sites that rate that position. They use their own scale.
5* is something like “P5 kicker”
4* = G5
3* = FCS
It’s dumb. So if somebody says we’ve signed a 5* kicker, take that with a grain of salt. Means he’s a P5 kicker because we signed him.
Choukair was a 5* kicker, but he wasn’t one of the top 5* kickers in the country. I think his family name helped boost his stock a little.
I’m not going to post it publicly, but let me tell you, animated Jonathan Smith doing his rendition of Cardi B’s “W.A.P.” is pretty freaking hilarious.
2022 local OL Kage Casey was offered a scholarahip by OSU on a lengthy unofficial visit today. OSU is his dream school and has been for a long time, so I like the Beavs chances here. We seem to be doing well at identifying OL who fit the system this year. We’re not wasting as much time/emergy chasing after the instant starter type 4* guys, who we eventually lose anyway.
I think it’s gut bomb time. I think Cage Kasey to OSU will happen. No timeline yet
Must really like what they see with Casey. Unless his measurable are higher now I want would have thought PWO. That said if there’s a place I don’t mind a smart developmental player it’s line.
Hopefully this means they’re taking the volume approach to linemen.
I hate this take, would rather not go after local 2 star kids. Would rather go for some actual good players.
sorry?
It’s not like we’ve abandoned 4* OL kids all together. We have several visiting campus this month.
We just don’t seem to be spending as much time/energy chasing after the national recruits that the perennial powerhouse teams land.
Does your gut tell you he’s a legitimate, DI, P5 athlete?
I haven’t seen him up close, but he was invited to campus and run through a private workout with the staff before they decided to offer him. So they must think he’s a legitamite P5 athlete.
One other question I forgot: Do you know if he has any experience on the D Line and could he have a role there for the Beavs?
6’6” is a legit D1 frame. It says he is 250 but I wonder where he is at now. If he is up to more like 270 that might be well on the way to the size needed after a redshirt season.
There’s a 2022 3* DT from Arizona who will be making the trip up North and taking in an unofficial visit/workout with OSU around June 9th. Daniel Santiago, has offers from Arizona, Army, Airforce, Yale among others. Smart kid, who’s traveling up to visit campus on his own dime.
https://n.rivals.com/content/prospects/2022/daniel-santiago-271977
Any reason we haven’t offered him? He’s got good size for a high school kid, could play DE or DT for us.
He wasn’t really on our radar until this week, until he showed interest in visiting campus for an unofficial visit. He’s being proactive about his recruitment and getting himself in front of teams, rather than waiting for them to find him.
A lot of important prospects visited today. Hope they went well.
Hopefully we see it pay off.
Dave Iuli, #8 OG in the nation from Washington, seems to have really enjoyed his visit.
What’s the context of the recent tweet?
Nvm duck BBALL game
Any news from the visits NB?
Not really. Guys enjoyed their visits but it’s so early in the official visit period, i wouldnt expect any news immediately from this group.
Good to have Prusia in there doing some peer recruiting.
I knoe the sexy story is “Dave Iuli really enjoyed his visit!” because he’s a 4*OL, but he still has a bunch of visits to take to schools we dont traditionally beat in recruiting. We’ll be old news in a few weeks.
One thing i see that’a interesting today is Colorado QB Sam Noyer entered the portal today. A couole of the first coaches he followed were Coach Lindgren and Coach Smith and Lindgren reciporicated immediately. Where there’s smoke….
Makes me wonder if our QB room has someone preparing to leave?
Quote from Noyer on the CBS college football site:
“So now I’m looking forward to a new opportunity and a fresh start, a place where they need a veteran quarterback who has the added experience of playing on both sides of the ball.”
Wonder how OSU fits that description unless somebody is leaving or maybe Gebbia isnt progressing as well as hoped?
Noyer would he a 1 and done transfer wherever he lands. Played really well for Colorado last year
Nolan probably isn’t feeling like a lock
I really want to see more of Gulbranson. Nolan is serviceable, but I don’t think he has the passing ability our offense needs.
It’s too bad he missed the Spring game.
Lindgren was Noyer’s first QB coach when he originally went to Colorado too, so they have more than a little familiarity.
I doubt he comes into a situation like ours with heavy competition for the QB job, including an incumbent starter.
Ronald Lewis, 3 Star OSU DB target has been CB’d to Colorado after his visit. He’s visiting us soon so we will still have a shot at him.
One of our upcoming official visitors, CB Ronald Lewis, has committed to Colorado.
https://twitter.com/chaamp7/status/1402046913134858240?s=19
The 2 guys who visited last weekend who have been the quietest seem to be the ones with the most likely chance to become Beavs.
Hudson Cedarland, OLB with a WSU offer.
Jack Velling, TE with Michigan, Minnesota, Utah, ASU among others.
Lots of recent activity with our coaches following these 2 guys in particular after the visits happened. Could be worth keeping an eye on.
Originally I was thinking it’s just too early for guy to be committing in June, with multiple remaining visits to take. But one thing i wasnt considering is how Covid and the transfer portal have cut back on the number of available spots this year, coupled with a larger than normal pool of candidates trying to take those spots. It could get competitive this year and guys may elect to commit early, if only to have a backup plan reserved while they continue to go through the recruiting process with other schools. Wouldnt be surprised if we see alot of players flipping as we get closer to signing day. Not just at OSU, but everywhere.
I moved this thread ahead of baseball. If you still want to discuss baseball, please do so in the prior thread.
Season’s over…let it go.
Election’s over…let it go.
You’re losing it, dude!
This guys seems to think there’s a good chance Noyer ends up at OSU. Really just an opinion because of Noyer and Lingren’s history.
https://twitter.com/oregonsportnews/status/1402339644944097285?s=20
I don’t see how he’s a good fit. We have plenty of options ready to perform in a few months.
Edit: looks like he thinks he comes in as a backup. That makes sense. NB, you said Noyer was good last year. Looking at his stats, 6TD and 7Int. What am I missing?
Yeah, after i said that i saw the 7 picks in his stats. Was basing my thoughts more on Colorado having a successful season with him leading the team.
Their offense was successful because of their running game. Definitely not their passing game.
He did mention in that CBS article yeaterday he was open to playing defense. Wonder if he can play Safety, or…. DT???
Another possibility would be grad assistant. Have seen quite a few examples over the years where coaches bring in players from programs they used to work at to come in as a GA. Our current TE coach Wozniak is here because he came in as a GA after playing for Gary Andersen at Wisconsin.
Give him a walk on spot but that’s it. Basically the reason he comes there is the relationship
With lindgren, the only guy to see his “talent” from the conference. Well, looks like the talent wasn’t enough to keep a starting job at Colorado so no need to take up a scholarship with the Beavs.
Got confirmation on of one of the next wbb coaches….
Just not sure if I can/should mention who at this point.
Please let it be Mandy!
Sorry, but at least we have more than 1 position open
You’re so cruel…
Gotta trust Rueck, but man, this is taking sooo long.
email me at the Beavrecruiting gmail account OOB, and I’ll pass the name along.
I can’t find your email
Beavs will be getting a visit from 2022 RB/Slot Javen Jacobs later this month. Don’t have the specific dates yet.
Offers from Colorado, ASU, CSU, AirForce, among others.
https://n.rivals.com/content/prospects/2022/javen-jacobs-250872
Not sure what to make of this quote:
“The 23 schools that responded by publication time have committed nearly $1.9 million to contracts that range from Oregon State’s five-year, $216,000 deal with Opendorse to the $10,000 one-time payment Arizona State made to the company for providing photos athletes can use to enhance social media posts.”
So does this mean Oregon State is ahead of the curve and outspending other teams because they see an opportunity to attract recruits through endorsement deals? Or does OSU soend more than other schools out of neccesity, because the OSU brand alone just isn’t going to cut it in the new recruiting climate?
https://apnews.com/article/college-sports-business-sports-a6ff5fd0069ec73ee30db158b1b75b59
Interesting, thanks for passing that along.
From the piece: An outside company could help a school monitor NIL deals athletes are making and assess market value, but what if the final version of whatever law that comes out of Capitol Hill prohibits schools from doing that?
“I wanted us to know what we needed first before just going to the market, because they’ll sell you everything,” Pittsburgh athletic director Heather Lyke said.
I wonder if schools like USC/UCLA will find that picking up scholarship level athletes on non-scholarship offers will happen more easily, if they can show that kids going to school in the LA market can average a certain level of income almost guaranteed.
Like why go to OSU on a scholarship deal if you know you’ll make more money as a walkon at USC, because of their connections and just general big market location?
I think OSU is in trouble. The only thing helping them from a marketing standpoint is being in a P5 conference. “Best college town in the Pac12” doesnt put money in your pocket.
Could be a rough calculation: Ego-Playing Time-Money in the future
How is a walk-on going to make enough money to cover school at USC?
Shorting bitcoin?
24/7 recruiting analyst Biggins quoted on OSU QB commit Throckmorton:
“ Just from a physical tools standpoint, he’s probably the most gifted guy Oregon State has brought in in a few years, I think,” Biggins said. “Think of a guy who is 6-foot-1 1/2, maybe pushing 6-foot-2, with good pocket mobility, throws well on the run, lightning-quick release, accurate down the field and plenty of arm.”
Throckmoton was tops in an accuracy drill in an Elite 11 camp and Biggins suggested w/a good senior season could be on 4* bubble.
Jay Toia has committed to USC, just like all of the USC fans were predicting as soon as he decommitted.
At least he didnt waste one of our official visits like he did for Michigan.
*UCLA
thanks for catching, UCLA
Thanks to all. Some milestones today: https://twitter.com/angrybeavs/status/1402636516019499012
Nice Beaver: I know this is a visit list, and not a list of all recruits, but only one on the D Line? Surprising. Any idea how many D linemen they’re after?
That list was only for week 1. There are several more clusters of visitors coming each week in June.
I know today, Daniel Santiago is going to be having an unofficial and private on campus workout, and could very well earn an offer by the end of the day.
Andrew Sacaiinaea visiter already this week and has an offer.
Sterling Lane and Mathias Malaki-Donaldson are both DEs official visiting June 18th-20th.
Mason Graham is a DT official visiting the last weekend in June.
Those are the only DL guys I know of currently in the visit plans, but you can bet more will be added.
Found a summary of our baseball recruits. Surprisingly difficult to find info on baseball. Curious to hear who will be going MLB (Reed?) from those who follow this more closely.
http://www.orangemedianetwork.com/daily_barometer/oregon-state-baseball-2022-recruiting-class-preview/article_4694cc08-514e-11eb-b454-cb21bd63806a.html
Looks to be one of the best recruiting classes in quite a while, and my guess is that all these guys make it to campus. Tyree Reed has been falling compared to a 1-2 years ago when he was projected to be a 1st rounder. He’s #167 on MLB’s latest top draft prospects list.
Looks pretty decent to me. If two of those guys can translate their hitting to over .330 in the college game our offense gets alot better. Average obviously isn’t everything but having more guys 300 would mean less guys left in base.
.400 = Melton
.350 = No one
.300 = Froemke, Claunch, Meckler, Boyd, Forrester (.299), Armstrong.
.280 = Ober (.279), Dernedde,
.250 = Casey, Gretler, Dukart
.200 = Jones, Fuches, McMahan
I would look at OPS because it’s a better predictor of run production. Most of the teams advancing to Super Regionals had one or more guy over 1.000. We had Melton and that’s it.
Contact rate (K%) is also a good one to look at because putting the ball in play is better than not. Compared to the rest of the P12 leaders, we were average to below average as a team and didn’t have any stand out guys (unless you count Casey, who was a standout in a bad way). That needs to improve, too.
Agreed. It was just the easiest. Here are some other ones. I don’t have a source for collegiate contact. I threw in 2018 as a comparison of what GREAT would be. Not I am not putting on anyone who started less than 5 games.
OPS 2021:
1.000 = Melton, Froemke
.900 = Forrester, Dernedde (.895)
.800 = Meckler, Ober, Gretler, Boyd
.700 = Boyd, Claunch, Armstrong, Fuches, Dukart, Casey
OPS 2018:
1.100 = Rutschman, Larnach
1.000 = Claunch
.900 = Nobach, Madrigal, Kwan
.800 = Malone, Grenier
.700 = Armstrong, Jones, Taylor, Anderson
OB% 2021:
.450 = Dernedde, Froemke, Melton
.400 = Forrester, Gretler
.350 = Meclker, Boyd, Claunch, Dukart, Fuchs, Armstrong
.300 = Casey, Jones
OB% 2018:
.500 = Claunch, Rutschman
.400 = Kwan, Larnach, Madrigal, Grenier, Nobach, Malone
.350 = Gretler, Anderson
.300 = Armstrong, Jones, Taylor
I think it’s most helpful to exclude the low PA guys like Froemke and Dernedde. I doubt Froemke has a 1.000 OPS over 100+ PA’s.
We really only had two regulars over .900 (Forrester and Melton) compared to six in 2018.
Dernedde and Froemke are both about 30 AB. Fuches, Boyd and Mcdowell are about 70. Gretler, and Melton are about 100. McMahan and Jones both had 115 or so (damn they ate up a ton of AB).
I would just * all the guys under 100 AB i guess. Too much work for me though!
I’m not a big baseball stats guy. Wondering, is there a stat that represents “positive impact per at-bat”?
For instance, a sac bunt may not get you on base, but you’re at least advancing the runner, which is a plus.
Same with getting on base by any means possible is a plus. Is there a measurement that includes all of the above?
WAR?
Not exactly what you describe, but that’s the closest I know to what you’re looking for.
Dernedde
Fixed, im never gonna spell it right first try though.
Prospects Live had him at #58 last week, then he fell out of their top 60 in the most recent mock draft that included “input from MLB scouts.”
Apparently he missed the whole Spring circuit for “unknown reasons,” so that couldn’t have helped. He also hasn’t put anything OSU-related on Twitter for a while, despite being fairly active.
He still seems like a longshot to me.
Guerra would be a fringe draft guy based on talent, but I don’t see his name getting as much buzz as it was over the winter.
If everyone ends up on campus, this looks like a really solid group.
NB, any thoughts on Karon Prunty? CB trans from Kansas, had offers from VaTech, Tenn, +
And when you gonna fill us in on Rueck’s choice? Maybe a hint?
That would be an awesome get! Freshman all American I believe. Have a Kansas portal guy already so hopefully he’s doing some peer recruiting.
Prunty is interesting. A 2* recruit who transfers after his Freshman all-American season at Kansas, and now everybody wants him. Including Ohio State?
Rivals lists him as a 9.3 out of 10 on their impact scale “Very high impact player who should start the moment he steps on the field and will change the outlook of a program immediately.”
Most of our transfers fall in the 4-5 range
Sorry Oregon State, you’re not getting him.
Send me an email regarding the coach question. I can’t find yours
Need to tell him he could be picking off UH passes at 1 am eastern time in the OSU Beaver home opener…that will sway him!

Sid is reporting Casey to LSU official.
Casey taking over a super regional SEC team…baseball just got harder yall
If true, will Mitch Canham still be the Pat Casey Head Baseball Coach Mitch Canham?
Then, would Joe transfer to play for him?
Might be his best bet. Hes the most likely guy to lose playing time to guys on the roster and freshmen.
Will his LSU salary be immediately transferred to the OSU HC endowment?
Weird. I thought Casey retired because he was done. He built a no name program into an elite program (OSU) and gained a fan base that loves him. Why leave that just to go to the cut-throat SEC where boosters totally run the show. Head scratch-er. I guess he figured retirement wasn’t in his blood and didn’t want to shove Canham out.
https://pamplinmedia.com/nbg/145-sports/447141-363179-pat-casey-enjoying-the-retirement-life
FYI, angry, “warriors” actually appears to be a Pat Casey word. That’s how he describes Canham.
I don’t see how its a big deal. Athletes are always compared to combat references. Combat sports and actual combatants (like war) require focus, training and execution. Thats pretty much the basics of any sport too.
Can we undo the Casey for F. King trade? Maybe throw in OSU’s AD?
Watch Casey win two CWS in a row and retire after 10 years as LSU’s AD
Weird relationship w/LSU: lose to LSU by 1 on Serna’s kicking, take their president, get rid of him, have former 3X Championship coach sign there…what’s next?
Don’t forget losing in the Baton Rouge regional in 2012
The TCU coach hired at LSU. WTF is Sid Finch? Has he ever been right about anything?
I was just wondering that…
He got something right one time, what was it?
That’s SIDD to you!…….and even a busted clock…
TCU coach is going to A&M. LSU is still very much looking for a new coach.
You all do realize Sidd Finch is a fictional character
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sidd_Finch
Yes of course. But what does that have to do with anything?
Anyway, the Sidd in question used to post here. He approached me privately to be a source. He used to work in the athletic department, and in theory, should be a good source. The problem is that many of his contacts are from the Riley era. IMO he should give up with the predictions, which appear to be more like guesses at this point.
Banner day for former Mariners getting hired to coach college teams.
Willie Bloomquist to ASU, Jose Cruz Jr. to Rice.
Suddenly, LSU fans have forgotten about the criticisms they lobbed at Casey regarding having Heimlich on the team here in Corvallis. Short memories
Many of them have not forgotten. I think there will be a lot of backlash if they hire Casey, in light of what they just went through with Miles and F. King.
Isn’t everyone in Louisiana married to their cousin? Who are they to judge!
How are Brenda Tracy and John Canzano not all over this? I’m actually being serious. This has been their meal ticket for 3 years, talking about OSU baseball first and LSU more recently with F.King. Those worlds converge and they’re silent?
Where’s the outrage?
Looks like Tracey is on it now. Imagine with the Catholic connection Canzano stays out of this one
You haven’t read any LSU message boards today if you think LSU fans are ignoring the Casey/Heimlich situation.
More from OSU on that topic i touched on yesterday, with their spending on a program to help student athletes maximize their NIL exposure. I haven’t read through it or watched it yet.
https://twitter.com/BeaverAthletics/status/1402724959722504193?s=19
Okay, that was smart of them to get on early. I haven’t seen this from any other major university yet.
More baseball recruiting notes:
-OF Tyree Reed’s HS team went 2-11 this season, with Reed hitting only .258, 7th best on his (very bad) team. That could explain the waning MLB interest.
-P commit Victor Quinn is apparently already hitting 97/98 with his fastball. He’s a recently converted OF who’s still learning the pitcher.
-Aussie Travis Bazanna is playing with Corvallis in the WCL and was the WCL POW this past week.
-C/corner IF Tanner Smith finished his HS season with a 1.200 OPS
-I didn’t realize we also have a commitment from the 2022 top Oregon player, Ely Kennel. He’s getting some top 5-round draft buzz.
Yikes. He should get his vision looked at.
I had a similar situation where my avg dropped to .260 sophomore year. Turns out I needed glasses. Hit .460 the following year. It was subtle where I didn’t even notice it in the classroom.
…I needed glasses…It was subtle where I didn’t even notice it in the classroom.
5 downvotes for what seems a reasonable suggestion, guess you shouldn’t have quoted batting average?
Boo! Glasses suck! Wear contacts!
Problem is I have an astigmatism that makes contacts difficult, although I did finally move to them this year. My vision isn’t even that bad, but the astigmatism makes near-viewing difficult with the contacts on. I have to hold objects at arms length to read them.
I want to get eye surgery, but I’m concerned with the astigmatism.
I honestly don’t care about whether you wear glasses and anyone who would downvote you for it needs to do some soul searching.
Yeah, I think we know who the downvoters are.
Sidd reporting we’re going to lose Barney to Texas A&M. Figures. The guy I like most on the staff…
Barney was a great player and had a (dare I say) a fiery warrior attitude. Haven’t seen that as a volunteer coach; in fact it was reported that Canham/Dorman wanted to light in to the players and Darwin said, “Let’s see how they respond on their own” (ie: without a tongue lashing).
I’m neutral on him moving on but do feel this might sway Canham to hang on to Dorman……..you know “for the stability” Poor thinking if it comes to that. There are possible reasons to keep Dorman, stability alone isn’t a good one.
I played with some real doofuses but me myself when I fucked up I knew it and beat myself up. If anything I would have performed better with a pick me up instead of a lashing after mistakes. I am sure some kids do need a good ass chewing but I imagine most of these guys are so hyper competitive the borderline verbal abuse is counter productive.
You could see the Pat Casey scenario coming from miles away. He stepped away for some time off to watch his youngest kid play a couple of years. The coaching fire was never extinguished. Now he get to poke OSU in the eye for not supporting his desire for the school to support Luke Heimlich.
In short, LSU does what OSU can’t conceive of doing: keep a top program going by getting an experienced top-level coach.
Footnote: True story: on Monday when Canham brought Salgado in to replace a pitcher who had retired the previous 7 batters in a row, and Salgado walked the first guy he faced on 4 pitches, I turned the radio off as I knew the game had been lost. Canham and Dorman have the king midas touch in reverse when it comes to managing a pitching staff: they turn gold to lead every time.
Beaver baseball: been good to know ya.
It was Rliey-esque, like the Alamo Bowl. Take your foot off the gas, get comfortable, let up, fuck it away.
Nothing yet from Eggers but Kendall Rogers says “multiple sources” confirm Casey is #1 candidate.
Ben Wetzler tweets, in response to Rogers scoop on Casey:
“I’m shook”
Boy would that be kick in the nads.
LSU puts out the $$$ for coaches. Their WBB coach got a big contract. Casey should cash in if he takes the job.
The Heimlich situation will nix Casey from the LSU job. Watch, by friday LSU will be denying Casey is a real candidate after the lynch mob gets rolling.
Exactly.
No I disagree. The Luke situation has zero impact on LSU hiring Casey. If Casey wants the job and the pay is high enough, he’ll be their manager… and probably win another NC soon.
In the end its optics. LSU has been given more then one black eye as of late (f king and les miles) they got raked over the coals for that and more. They’re not about to hire Casey and drag that all back up.
So then would Casey ever be hired anywhere?
I had no idea the Heimlich situation had (wrongly, in my opinion) tainted PC so much outside of Oregon until reading all of the LSU fan backlash the last couple days.
It’s vicious
Me either. I’d say it would be good for all if PC took the LSU job… maybe others (ESPN/SEC/LSU/etc) would take a more objective look at the railroad job Luke got and why PC wanted to stand by the kid. I happen to have some insight into situation… I personally know one of the prosecutors (now a judge) in the case and personally know some of Luke’s family. I live in Sumner which borders Puyallup. Anyhow, based on what I know, I’d say I’m 90% certain Luke did nothing wrong and based on poor council and family dynamics he made a poor decision to plead. To this day, I’m still confused why an investigative reporter hasn’t decided to dig a little deeper and present more facts to the public. I was thinking Danny Moran was taking a closer look… he reached out to me a couple times but I was never comfortable sharing too much with him because he’s a weasel and everything I know is second hand. Plus, I think the more Moran learned, the more uncomfortable he began to feel about breaking the story… and then the O asked that he leave it alone. Wouldn’t be surprised if that led to his career change. However, I don’t think it would be that difficult to get folks talking… especially now that time has passed. Would make a great podcast
You’re understanding of the case is exactly right. Nobody in the media has had the stones to reveal the truth in it as it’s not as sexy and they’re afraid to be seen as insensitive to the “victim”. All of this being pretty unfortunate for Luke. I’d wonder what his chances in a civil case against Moran/Oregonian would be.
Hard to say. The LSU job is just bad timing with everything going on there. If I was him I’d stay retired. It’s not worth the bullshit that’s going to come up outside of OSU.
This might not be a bad thing if Casey blamed OSU for the Heimlich stuff. It might be an eye opener to the tight rope the OSU AD had to walk.
https://www.theadvocate.com/baton_rouge/sports/lsu/article_87d65eb6-c976-11eb-b804-3b5aefe0dcf5.html
Its an interesting point, but sports is SO important in SEC. I won’t be surprised if they offer to make him the highest paid NCAA men’s baseball coach in the country.
Just read the replies here. No chance.
https://twitter.com/sheadixon/status/1402746868216520707?s=21
Didn’t even need to read it to know exactly what is being said.
Speaking of Ben Wetzler, he recommends this video (worth a chuckle):
https://www.espn.com/video/clip/_/id/31579096
That was hilarious, love his attitude haha.
Strange that Virginia has a 35 year old pitcher.
NB any news on Keith Olsen? I noticed he got rated up from 83 to 86 on 247. Also picked up a USC and BSU offer.
He’s currently playing basketball which had a late season this year. As far as I know he’a still visiting in 2 weekends. This weekend he’s having basketball playoffs, so he’s not doing any football related trips currently.
Update on Olsen. I see he has a trip scheduled to Utah this weekend. So maybe the playoffs are over?
OT: Athlon picks UO to win PAC N, projects Beavers as 6th in north with a D that has allowed 6+ yards per play the last 4 consecutive years, and doesn’t produce many TOs.
They favor ASU to win PAC south.
Just noticed Smith is 9-22 at OSU, Chip Kelly 20-21 @ UCLA.
No even close to apples to apples
Kelly’s record at UCLA is 10-21.
Wanna try again? LOL
Ha! Yes. 10 wins….typing on phone.
Pretty cool that Steven Jackson is playing a key role in the OSU athlete branding organization. I can’t think of many athletics alumni who would carry more weight than him.
Jenny Huth is the new women’s assistant basketball coach. Official announcement when all paperwork finalized.
Hey BG, she’s no Mandy…
Luck O da Beav’s!!
Lucky wit dat Beav.
This is correct, announcement will happen in the “next week or two”
I’ve got a buddy who is pretty well connected to the baseball program that says PC is not taking the LSU job.
Was he ever offered the job?
Gut bomb steered me wrong. Kage Casey committed to Boise today. I guess OSU wasnt really his long time dream school?
https://twitter.com/KageCasey22/status/1403138919831531521?s=19
I hear one if you is posting my words on Beaversedge as a user named Nazarite.
At least switch the words around when you plagiarize.
I remember that name from when I was in school.
I remember that name from when I used to subscribe to Beaverblitz
Yep, same.
NiceBeaver, if only they had any info to steal we could send you over there incognito.
Trying to be cool like you and have the inside scoop. Sad.
rearrange that user name you get “A Near Zit,” sounds about right
Bad breakfast burrito…
Jaydon Grant with a Dam Right. Do players usually post the bat signal before coaches??
I’ve confirmed it is indeed a bat signal, but nobody is willing to spoil it. Was just told to wait and that i’ll be happy with it. Speculate away.
My initial guess is Sam Noyer, but it’s purely a guess.
It’s noyer
That doesn’t really excite me. Hopefully he is changing positions and we won’t know his impact until fall.
Let’s close some of these 22’ visits.
OT: New College Football playoff format proposed:
https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/2021/06/10/cfp-management-committee-consider-expanding-12-team-bracket/7640624002/
I like this.
Needs to be 8 or 16, no byes and conference champions all in. Want to go to the championship? Win your conference.
If they insist on this format based on rankings then they need to do away with preseason rankings and not release any until all P5 teams have played 2 conference games.
All the extras will be SEC teams.
And the media will talk about how dominant the SEC is…
SEC teams and Notre Dame every year. How refreshing.
“there would be no cap on the number of participants from one conference” that sounds like SEC influence peddlers.
Yeah, I like 8 teams with the 6 conference champions getting auto bids and 2 at large SEC teams. The format proposed with 4 SEC teams all getting byes is whack.
I’d write in the highest ranked independent or G5 team then one at large. Gives the Boise State types their chance too. SEC doesn’t need 3 out of eight every year. Send your best team and we’ll find out.
I was being facetious. I don’t even know anymore if there are 5 or 6 conferences that are considered power conferences. So auto bid to the champs, and auto-bid to the highest ranked non power conference team provided they are top 12 or something like that. Then the 2 highest ranked non automatics get in.
It’s unfair because the SEC plays 8 conference games, while the Pac-12, Big-10, and Big-12 play 9 each. Yeah, the SEC has the best teams in the land, but everyone needs to play an equal number of conference games.
It also doesn’t help that the SEC doesn’t play away games versus P5 teams. Seems like they’re always playing at neutral sites in SEC states. Credit Ole Miss for scheduling a home and home with the Beavs.
Agreed- I’ve always thought that an 8-team playoff with a guaranteed spot for each conf champion plus the top Group of Five team was the best way to go. The two wild cards they can fill however they want. That would be a huge win for OSU and other smaller schools. My nightmare is a dream season where everything comes together and we may actually be the best team… and we miss the playoff due to politics.
What’s with the politicians calling playoff expansion a “cash grab” and implying there’s no other reason for it?? That’s asinine. Huge implications for competitive balance. NCAA football’s postseason is uniquely terrible in sports and results in the same teams always being at the top.
And the politicians begin weighing in…Sen. Cantwell apparently wants a hearing with athletes as panelists.
https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/2021/06/10/college-football-playoff-expansion-criticized-senators-blumenthal-murphy/7647320002/
Who from the PAC will participate? Huskies? Cougars?
Good to hear infrastructure and other issues are taken care of so politicians can concentrate on college football.
Nashon Wright apparently doing fairly well early at Dallas. Some blog fodder tempered with cautious optimism:
https://www.bloggingtheboys.com/2021/6/10/22525341/nahshon-wright-may-be-on-his-way-to-stealing-a-starting-job-at-outside-corner-kelvin-joseph
I think we’re going to see an extremely focused Rezjon Wright this year, now that he sees how soon his life could be changing if he has a good year.
More positive notes on Wright:
https://www.dallascowboys.com/news/nahshon-wright-ready-to-carry-momentum-into-camp
Moving his feet more than in college?!? Hmmm. Didn’t realize Cowboy’s DC Quinn attended pro days in Corvallis. Quinn is a good bet to maximize his abilities.
Wright made some tough plays for us. Problem is making an exception play doesn’t make up for one blown coverage. Consistency is paramount to being a DB. But if he can find that consistency he is gonna stick in the league. Can’t teach that length and athleticism.
Visitor list keeps shrinking. Now Jaylen Lewis is announcing he’ll be in Memphis this weekend. And the other day Ronald Lewis committed to Colorado.
I’ll be away most of the weekend camping with no internet, although the weather may cut that trip short, we’ll see.
Also, luck o the beavs would have it that the 2 weekends they’ve been allowed to host visits in 2 years have been rainy. While pretty much every other day the past few months has been dry.
Have a good weekend NB!
thanksNuc.
comment editor seems to be on the fritz. i corrected a typo and it edited my post date to Dec 11 2018, which caused this post to end up at the top of the page. but now i can’t change it back.
well nevermind, now it’s back to the correct time stamp…
I saw it and changed it manually. For some reason this is a glitch with the comments. Haven’t been able to figure it out.
I got a message this morning asking if Jerrale Powers is visiting this weekend. Apparently that’s what Blitz is reporting in their paywall section.
Jerrale Powers visited last weekend. He’s not coming for a 2nd weekend in a row.
Time to ask for a partial refund on that subscription.
The way Nemac is describing this new commit coming soon I really hope it isn’t just Noyer
It’s noyer…..
I don’t get it…
We have two QBs with game experience and two underclassmen who looked good in the spring. Where does Noyer fit?
I take this as a sign that either someone is leaving, or they’re grooming Noyer to be a future addition to the coaching staff and dont want to see him go somewhere else. Or maybe both.
Seems like a crowded room unless he changes position. Maybe Gebbia isn’t healing on track? For someone with 1 year left, there’s gotta be some more opportunities for him to be a day 1 starter at another school.
His little edit pic says “quarterback”
He specifically mentioned having experience on both sides of the ball in his quotes. Maybe they told him he could compete for QB, but they wanted him to move to safety if he didn’t win the job?
Competition is good, but there are only so many reps to go around.
I fear a Gebbia set back as well. Has anyone seen an update on his recovery? I can’t find anything, just old articles about his injury.
Gebbia was running around at the spring game talking to different positions groups. I don’t see where a setback would keep him from being ready for the fall. Even if so, Chance and Ben would be ahead of this guy, right? I mean he had a decent year but was benched.
Cardinals off to a great start in their Super Regional game.
That’s good to hear. The only thing I can figure is that they want to redshirt both Gulbranson and Vidlak. Most teams want to carry three QB’s. It would make sense in this case.
On the Canzano, they made a point of mentioning repeatedly that he played safety at CO before coming back as a QB last year. But during the interview, Noyer said he’s ready to come in and compete and earn a spot in the QB room. So who knows. maybe he’s potential depth at both spots, but to me this just seems like he’s a guy they’re grooming to be a future coaching staff addition. he even sounds a bit like a coach in his interview
NiceBeav, if that’s the case, then I really like this move. We added depth on offense, defense, leadership, and coaching, with a single scholarship. Not bad at all!
Thanks for the extra information!
I interpret this as basically a lack of confidence in Nolan and Gebbia. With Gebbia the injury could be a factor, but maybe Nolan has just failed to impress?
Maybe they’re thinking Vidlak and Gulbranson are the future, but they want a bridge player while they develop. We’ve got a pretty stacked roster this year and perhaps they don’t want to waste it breaking in a fresh QB with no career starts.
I think I saw some video of Gebbia throwing recently on twitter, looked ginger and probably 30% up to speed. Must have been a real gnarly ruptured hamstring. My monies on Noyer signing meaning that they don’t expect Gebbia to be ready to contribute much this season, or at least not up to the level that they’d expect him to start. It’s a crowded room but bringing a guy in as versatile as he is that has proved he can compete in the Pac-12 (especially to himself) is a big win-win imo. Who knows on what might be going on with the QB room and lockeroom dynamics tho .
Maybe noyer will be collettos backup as a battering ram.
I don’t think they go after Noyer unless Smith/Lindgren felt like they needed him. My guess is they think he’s better than what they have for this season to get them over the hump and post a winning season.
“…has proved he can compete in the Pac-12 (especially to himself)”
Very good point.
Till now I was leaning Chance Nolan, but……….
Wasn’t his hamstring injured in CW, a cheap shot when he was already down?
Yes, yanking on him trying to pull him out of the end zone under the pile. They also botched the call and didn’t give him the TD (naturally). Nolan came in for his first play as a Beav and sneaked it in after.
Canzano had to have known about Noyer to OSU back when Noyer left Colorado. He instantly tweeted an old story about Noyer he had written last year as soon as he hit the portal, and now today he has him on his show at 1:00. Not to mention Noyer’s announcement came minutes before JC’s show, yet Canzano already has time carved out to cover the QB room topic at the lead of his show today?
Not saying there was tampering going on, but this wasnt a very well kept secret if Noyer had plans to join OSU before he even decided to transfer
So is Nolan moving on you think?
At 6’ 4” 220 lbs. he’d be the biggest safety wouldn’t he?
2nd team all-league. I don’t think we should write him off as QB1
I like what I see from Noyer despite the poor TD to INT ratio. I can see him beating out Gebbia and Nolan. Or being a nice plan B. Good add, though it complicates things. Should light a fire under the incumbents.
If Gebbia isn’t recovering as hoped, and they want to RS Gulbranson and Vidlak as suggested above, the Noyer signing makes a lot of sense. Plus, 6’4” 220, experienced, and in Lindgren’s system? Sounds good.
Letting Gulbranson and Vidlak RS would be great. Smith is doing well at QB.
I saw that Beavs will play Montana St. at Providence Park in Portland during the 2022 football season! I think this is cool especially that Resers capacity will be limited due to the renovations. I’ve always wanted to see the Beavs play in Portland. I was a toddler when they last played there in 86 so I can’t wait to watch this.
OT: Madrigal on 60-day IL w/hamstring. Boo.
Chi White Sox doing well. Hope he gets to WS.
Let me know when you guys want a new thread, and if there’s any topic you want it to be.
I’m most interested in football recruiting currently.
I’m with Ripper here, although there is a possible WBB story as Rueck still has to fill the “Mandy Close Attractive Assistant WBB Coach” position. It’s been endowed, right? (cue BG)
BTW: the lady he just hired brings 7 years experience with UCLA, she won’t likely be a step down for Beavs WBB.
That’s fine. When you guys want a thread say so.
Thanks dude!
I was reading Athlon’s College Football preview and of course, they have Evan Bennett highlighted as a “rising star”. Hard to escape Luck O’ The Beavs sometimes.
Eggers with some back story on the Casey to LSU matter.
Says, “Casey, 62, seems unlikely to coach again at the college level. He has one more year on his contract as special assistant to … Scott Barnes. I don’t see him staying in that position after the contract expires. Casey has plenty of money and nothing left to prove as a coach.
I could see him working part-time as a major-league scout or in some capacity at the professional level. “
https://www.kerryeggers.com/stories/covering-some-baseball-topics-pat-casey-friends-of-baseball-and-mavericks-independent-league
Thanks, oob!
In that article it said casey was intrigued to coach at lsu but didn’t want to move his family. So would he be willing to coach locally? I know he isn’t coming back to osu but feels like he could have stayed another 6 or so years.
Our friends from Arkansas lost to NC State yesterday. That would be a real shame if they lost the Super Regional…..
Not a fan of that university, but they have an electric baseball atmosphere. It’s nice to see a sold out baseball game.
Going through some baseball stats today and it stuck out to me that OSU was worst in the PAC-12 in batter strikeout rate. The HR or bust approach may work in the majors, but with less than stellar defenses in college, you want to put the ball in play. That number needs to improve next year.
Casey’s kid was the poster child for that. I wonder what dad thought abut that?
Did it improve at all at the start of the season vs the end?
Too many backwards K’s this season in important situations, too.
So which stat is the more concerning; Strikeout Rate, HBP, BB ??
Yes! All lead to loses
I think the idea is “control the zone” not HR or bust which comes from the Mariners farm system. Scott Servis explains the idea here:
“ in football, the game is won at the line of scrimmage. Over at CenturyLink, they control the line of scrimmage, they win the game… Where is the line of scrimmage in baseball? For me, the line of scrimmage in baseball is the strike zone. You have to control the strike zone, whether you’re on the mound or in the batter’s box. Controlling the strike zone, swinging at good pitches, getting deep in counts, walking maybe a little bit more. And on the flip side, controlling the strike zone, keeping the pitch count down, getting deep in the games, having a chance to win games as a starting pitcher, that’s where it happens, in the strike zone. So looking at the numbers, is there any particular number? Walks to strikeout. Pitching side, hitting side, that’s where the game is won”.
It all sounds great on theory but you do need players than can execute the strategy.
Strategy has really worked well for the Mariners.
From what I saw this year designing a team to make lots of contact and drive up pitch counts could be really effective. Stud pitchers are like DT’s in football. Super hard to get and even worse cause many of the best go to the pros and skip college. Seems like wearing bullpens out is a very smart move in college.
Definitely want to get to the bullpen in college ball, hell, Beavs won a lot of their games vs the lower quality teams in the 7th, 8th, etc. Guess my point is that using the Mariners philosophy might not be the route to go as it obviously hasn’t led to any kind of success for them. Maybe see what the perennial good teams are doing vs the basement dweller? And this pains me as a Mariners fan.
That last bit was heart breaking haha
HBP’s actually weren’t much worse than the average college team.
Not much worse than average? Really?
The way I read the stats, the Beavs tied for 10th most in the Nation. No other PAC12 team in the top 50.
For comparison, number 50 (Duke) had roughly 10% fewer HBP on a per inning basis. Couple hundred teams were even better than Duke.
We had what, like 70 hit batters going into the post season? Know we racked up several more during the tourney. Definitely was an issue along with the walks.
You’re right, I was thinking wild pitches.
HBP was higher, but in the grand scheme of things, I don’t think it’s so many additional baserunners that we still weren’t a top pitching team. Plus, Abel was the real outlier. Without him, it’s not really a staff-wide concern.
For more perspective, Abel led the conference in WP’s, HBP’s, and BB’s….and opposing hitter OBP. So as the biggest “command issue” contributor, he also happened to be the best pitcher in the whole conference at preventing baserunners.
Hjerpe was 5th in the conference in HBP and 4th best in opposing hitter OBP.
All in all, I think the HBP stat is misleading and only stands out to us because it’s typically a rare event. Its perception is probably more prominent than its actual impact on team performance.
One more stat: if you take the W out of WHIP, and just look at hits per inning, Abel is laughably better than everyone else in the PAC-12. That speaks to just how dominant his stuff is.
Nationally, the only SP’s within his range are Kumar Rocker, Jack Leiter, and Kevin Kopps (all 1st round locks).
Too Late Nate reverts to character in the second inning of yesterdays game. But, ya gotta admit, his guys are still playing!
And that guy Beck stays in character, pitching Tree to a win. How about a Zona/Tree CWS?
If Gebbia isn’t ready to go what are the realistic expectations for this team? Do we still have a chance at the north if Nolan or Noyer lead the team.
It’s been hard to gauge if Nolan has gotten any better. Noyer stats don’t look the best but I haven’t seen him play, gonna look up some games. Do we have enough weapons without an elite QB to win?
We don’t have a chance in the north regardless. Defense is still bad which limits what we can do. Sorry.. just being honest.
The defense should be better. We have more size and depth at LB. Injuries limited us last year but I think that group along with the DB’s can become a avg defense. Which would be fine if we had a killer offense. I feel like the pieces are there if we had a clear top tier QB leading the way.
However, I agree it’s not looking good but can we finish at least third?
With the addition of schad and added depth I don’t think there is anyone they can’t compete with if they stay healthy. Washington and Stanford have fallen off and WSU no longer has leach. They beat the ducks and Cal so I don’t see any reason to say they don’t have any chance.
Back home now. Any news i need to catch up on from the weekend?
Eggers weighed in on Casey/LSU, Rueck’s hire not yet announced formally, Stanford punched ticket to Omaha, AZ still possible for Omaha, Beavfan says Tibs D will still be bad and limits FB ceiling.
Recruiting?………..not plugged in
Welcome home, damp camping?
Thanks Oob
Rained all night last night, but wasnt terrible. A mess to pack up this morning and now i have to dry everything out.
Saw a 247 analyst has a crystal ball for Vincic to OSU, btw
Exactly why I like camping in theory, but hate it in practice…
If you stick to mid July or August in Oregon, you’re pretty safe. June or before- can be great but you’re really rolling the dice.
Love camping but it’s pretty miserable in the rain.
That would be a nice get.
OSU hasn’t recruited the Puget Sound area well and I saw one of the Husky recruitniks say they don’t think Lake is recruiting Washington well, so it would be great to get a foothold there.
pigs go downs
They started their closer, who pitched 8 innings and only gave up 3 runs. How are you the “best team in the nation” and don’t have a game 3 starter thsts worthy to throw out there just to eat up some innings…
Up vote for user name. Lol. Incredible come back for NC State after losing game 1 by 19 runs.
Zona now pounding Ole Miss 9-1
10-1
13-1
Down two LHP due to suspension, Too Late Nate betrays his moniker today. His two arms have limited Ole Miss to 3 hits/1ER through 7; oh yeah, they’ve tossed 1 BB, 1HBP, and 8 K’s
BG……..ummm endowed, get it?
15-1
Dogpile…….16-3
Young team, gonna be trouble next season in the PAC
Yup. Lots of young hi end players.
That Frosh RHP could be a dominant Friday guy.
Jonny Hekker doing his best to help recruit Luka Vincic on Twitter. Said the Bothel to Corvallis move worked pretty well for him.
Luka’s reply was pretty good too.
ASU hitting coach not staying with the team. Big loss there.
Can he join our staff? We never figured out if we have one!
Smith’s teams at Indiana could swing the bats as well.
Isn’t Barney going to Texas A and M or is that rumor just a rumor as well? Could be a paid spot open.
Folks sure don’t post with the same confidence when the news doesn’t come to fruition.
We should view the Mariners in context. They aren’t trying to compete right now, they are in a rebuild situation. In reality everything is going to plan (minus injuries). The Mariners have the 6th lowest payroll. They’ll evaluate the young talent and make some big moves when they feel enough of them are ready.
The control the zone strategy works. The Cubs used the same thing to win the World Series. Again, they have to get the right players in to execute this strategy. OSU is working on that now.
This was supposed to be a reply above, sorry
I hear ya, but they’ve been rebuilding for the last 19 years to even make the playoffs. I agree with the concept, but out of the new guys we saw, mostly Forrester was the one going deep in counts, getting walks, etc on a consistent basis. Hopefully it works out, they’ve got a lot to work on and definitely skeptical of using the Mariners as any kind of template for what works.
I think a lot people stopped following the Mariners when they had Jack Z who literally destroyed our farm system. We have had a new GM Jerry Dipioto. In the span of 6 seasons he has turned the farm system from a bottom 5 system to a top 5. We had the Al ROY last year in Kyle Lewis which was his pick. All in all his track record shows. Take a look at the Angels, since he left they haven’t been near as successful.
My whole life I have waited for the Mariners to make a run. They are finally trending in the right direction.
As far as OSU goes, this strategy will work. Now it’s on coaching/talent to execute. I think next year with no pandemic, we will finally see which direction they are trending.
And glad you mentioned Forrester. He was one of the few that could execute and look at what he did in the tournament.
As a Mariners fan, I’d love to see it. 19 years of irrelevance has been rough. We did get no hit 2x this year already. SMH.
Were you the guy who guaranteed the Mariners would make the playoffs this year?
I didn’t guarantee it. They had a good shot coming out of spring to squeak in. Unfortunately, Paxton got hurt right out the gate. So did Lewis, etc.
You certainly wrote it.

“I say all this to say this: The mariners will be a playoff team come October. Book it”
For all we know Angry edited that. He likes to do that :)
Yep I said if they lose three of their starting pitchers, their best hitter, and multiple other players. They’d be a playoff team. You got me lol…
Nice dodge.
So much for that “depth”
Just own it.
Whisky, i like it! Lol
Paxton hurt, Gonzalez has missed time, Lewis (ROY) missed time, came back and is now out again. France has missed time, Evan white is out but not sure that hurt anything, Haniger may be out again.
They’ve had an unreal run of injuries.
One could argue this years Beavs did not control the zone, despite Mitch coming from the Mariners organization.
OJ… that was a big issue if indeed this was the strategy. It take pitchers with command (we were short on that), and hitters with discipline and patience (we were very short on this). Hard to figure out if it’s talent, coaching, or execution. next year will tell us where we are trending.
Has anyone heard MC talk about his overall baseball philosophy in an interview? Not just his coach speak to reporters but something where he breaks down his approach to the game.
A little karma for DBU as Virginia hits a grand slam in the 7th to take a 5-2 lead. Anyone watched the series this weekend? Would the Beavs have matched up well against Virginia?
In other news, my wife went in for a procedure today to have the section around a mole removed that came back as cancerous. Luckily, she went in for a dermatologist appointment just because and they noticed the mole. I encourage everyone to get a checkup. She wears sun screen and isn’t in the sun a lot. They said if she had this for 5 or so years and didn’t get it checked, she would be dead.
Ian Massey, the JC DB who was just offered, is planning to visit this weekend.
This all developed today
8 tackles per game as a cb? I see we found some safety depth.
https://collegefootballnews.com/2021/06/oregon-state-college-football-preview-2021
Basically says defense sucks and that the offense needs to push the ball downfield better. Points out that they don’t have a big 300lber which we are all fully aware.
Has Eldridge as best offensive player and Roberts as the best defensive player.
Hard to argue with the points laid out. Defense, while better than before JS, still last in PAC 12. Personally think Tibs needs to go and I’d hope that if we stay as bottom dwellers after this season, JS would make that change.
I like tibs. I think it’s easier to rebuild offense than defense. Anderson left us in a horrible state with depth and talent. If you they make progress this year they won’t be the worst in the PAC. That said if they fall back then I would agree.
I disagree with this… Gary Andersen left us in a horrible state with depth and talent *on offense*. He had some good defenses. The 2016 unit was regularly hung out to dry by the totally inept offense, but it was legit. We lost a lot of games but almost all low scoring. Beavs beat the spread in 11/12 games that year, usually decisively. That defense was worlds better than anything Tibs /Smith have fielded.
Agree that the way Andersen left hurt the program on both sides of the ball, but there was still defensive talent there. I think it’s very fair to question schemes and approach at this point, especially with how ineffective we’ve been on the line.
It’s hard to be successful when half the guys playing are walk ones and consistently struggle to get a D1 DT. The exodus on yhe defensive side of the ball has been a lot especially at DB and DT.
I agree that improvement needs to be made I don’t think that’s up for debate. If they can get another DT transfer I expect improvement and there isnt any excuse for them not to be better this year barring injuries. If schad is the real deal and gumbs can stay healthy that should make a large difference. If improvements aren’t made then I wouldn’t be opposed to a change.
If talent is an issue, wouldn’t that also be a reflection on Tibs? 3-4 years to get players and hasn’t been able to? Seems like an issue to me if he isn’t able to help get the pieces he needs for his defense to work. Granted, we’ve had injuries (but every team has them) and some xfer away (so does every team) but it’s all part of th job.
Depends partially on who has position coach responsibility, right? They’re just as responsible for recruiting as the upper level coaches.
I felt like the defense has improved every year. Not only in talent, but performance. To me it’s night and day from year 1 and I haven’t seen them take any steps back. That tells me our coach is making an impact. We can talk about the rate of development being an issue and of course recruiting but this D isn’t worse by any stretch.
Well now we know why there was a new QB signed for this season.
Daschel is reporting Gulbranson is out with a shoulder injury.
On the plus side, at least he’s not transferring away.
Just saw that too. Hope for speedy recovery and def glad he’s not transferring out. Like what some of our young QBs have to offer.
Ya definitely glad he’s not transferring. The kid has the best arm except for vidlak which I just haven’t seen enough from him to make a judgment call at this level. His lone drive was very impressive.
Fyi jump to bottom is gone on mobile.
On computer too
All avatars are missing too for me. Some other stuff seems different also.
Should be good now.
Thanks! You have saved my thumb!
Watching these supers, I don’t think the Beavs would’ve been able to hang offensively. HR fest by most the schools that advanced and lots of them have line up with 4 – 6 dudes with double digit HRs.
Yeah probably not. We’re still a few parts from ready for a big run.
If our starters had been on their A game, we would have been able to keep it close, but I agree. Especially without Melton, we didn’t have the firepower.
We need Tyree.
Wow, ND 1st baseman just hit a hr that left the stadium. Might still be going.
They lost…
Too funny.
Came across this remark in a Louisiana paper, talk about limited world view. Regarding Casey to LSU they say:
“In Casey’s 24-year coaching career, the sordid Heimlich affair was isolated, but it would have followed Casey to LSU, which already is dealing with a sexual misconduct scandal. Still, had there been no Heimlich situation, Casey would likely not be coming to LSU. He was never offered the job. He was never a top candidate. He remains in the mix, but barely. A coach trying to regain energy and decide if he wants to coach is not ready for the SEC.”
The last part got me, they don’t know Casey like we do.
https://www.theadvertiser.com/story/sports/college/lsu/2021/06/11/lsu-baseball-coaching-job-board-2-0-ole-miss-mike-bianco-louisville-dan-mcdonnell/7651560002/
Oh well, their loss.
Comical take – imagine writing that any coach with 3 national championships on his resume might not “be ready” to play in your conference. Delusional.
It may be that he isn’t “ready” (or willing) to deal with the SEC’s ridiculousness
Any thoughts on the speculation that conferences will do away with divisions once the playoff expands to 12 teams?
The way the P12 currently sits, I think this will be neutral for us, aside from meaning we occasionally play current North teams a little less often. The divisions are currently pretty well balanced.
And keep a title game with just the top 2 teams? I don’t like it. Too much advantage to teams that avoid the top teams.
Very slight increase in Beavs exposure to So.Cal and AZ? Very slight advantage for recruiting?
Probably goes without saying, feels like the next most likely commit for OSU will be the JC DB, Ian Massey.
Yesterday morning, he didnt have an offer and wasn’t even sure if OSU was interested in offering or having him in for a visit. Then Coach Blue called him and offered and extended a visit invite. It’s his best offer currently and he visits in a few days. Seems like he’s ready to pull the trigger soon.
It’s odd, I could swear I just saw a commitment tweet from somebody that said something like “OTW Home”, but as soon as i clicked on it, it disappeared from twitter, like whoever put it out there deleted it.
Haven’t heard anything about an upcoming commitment today, but maybe we’ll see a Dam Right tweet?
Well, not really a commitment post. Original edit that was posted had the wrong class listed so it had to be re-edited to fix that.

What’s his star rating? If this is the same guy, it looks like he has no rating. Couldn’t find a prep profile, either.
https://247sports.com/Player/Ian-Massey-92235/
No profile really. That link is his prep profile, but he went the JUCO route so he never got rated.
Here’s his current JC hudl, but he doesnt have a 2021 profile on any site yet.
https://www.hudl.com/video/3/13062469/607a144d1763531850ecf85a
He had 80+ tackles and 2 ints in 8 games. At the least we know he hustles.
ASU in hot water. Before this came out, I had heard it’s somehow related to paying players via crypto currency, but have no idea how true that all is.
https://twitter.com/ESPNRittenberg/status/1405178123931488257?s=20
Again, what’s the difference between paying the players in cryptocurrencies and compensating the players with gear and promises of future employment, endorsements, etc. I know you don’t make the rules but I’d like to ask the NCAA this question. Sure, there can be separation with facilities and coaching budgets but some of these schools are getting the edge in recruits by compensating them in ways that creates inequity. They can’t come down for one thing and not the other.
Here’s their contact info.
http://www.ncaa.org/about/contact-ncaa
What’s stopping AD’s from creating their own cryptocurrencies with which to ‘pay’ players? It’s not legal tender.
“Come to OSU and you’ll get 5000 BeaverCoin per year!”
Tyree Reed rocking oregon state on his graduation cap. Hopefully he makes it to campus, suppose it depends what round he’s projected at.
Seems all over the place based on the most recent prognostications.
I read recently that he had an injury in 2020 and that could have been to blame for his poor performances this HS season and at other recent events.
Nobel Thomas will be making his college decision June 30th.
He still has one official visit to Boston College(assuming it’s still scheduled)
Besides OSU, he has also visited Iowa State.
Mississippi State, UConn and W.Virginia were also among his top 6 recently.
Given the timing of this update, and the fact that he and his dad both seemed to enjoy their recent OSU visit, I would have to say the Beavs are the front runners here.
Hey nicebeav always appreciate your info and updates. If it’s not trouble could you add the star ratings for the recruit assuming it’s easy and you’re already of what it is? If it’s a pain don’t worry about it but I think this helps everyone know if it’s a big deal or a meh.
The rating is 3 stars for almost all of our recruits. Atleast on 247.
I assume as much I meant high or low or notable offers. Didn’t mean to sound needy or overcomplicate things.
I’ll link 247 profiles when he drops names. Easy peezy
Was just going to say the same. You can pretty much assume every guy is 3* when talking about OSU. On the rare occasion a guy is 4*, I’ll try to mention it.
I dont tend to focus on stars because unranked guys always get ranked up to 3* after committing to OSU. And 4* guys have been known to get ranked down to 3* after committing to OSU(Omar Speights, Easton Mascarenas come to mind)
It’s a waste of time. I’d rather list competing offers
Collins

Nemec is reporting that there’s likely a commitment happening this weekend. Wonder who?
My best guess is that new Juco Safety Ian Massey
Good call. That makes sense. We’ve gotten a few safties from xfer portal and JUCO. Not sure any of them have yet to play any meaningful minutes.
Correct
Basically since nicebeav pretty much already said that.
This is not going to end well for ASU
https://sports.yahoo.com/sources-ncaa-investigating-arizona-state-football-for-recruiting-violations-194707554.html
Crazy thing is it sounds like Pete Thamel was forced to go early with his story because the Athletic scooped him on it. But the Thamel story, when finished, will be much more comprehensive. We’re at the tip of the iceberg currently.
There’s even allegations of coaches sleeping with a players mom.
I dont care for George Wrighster, but his show has a pretty good recap of what’s coming up on this podcast. First 30 minutes are worth a listen
https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/wrighster-or-wrong-with-george-wrighster-and-ralph-amsden/id1434205566?i=1000525788756
That certainly gives new meaning to the old “my mom loved the coaching staff” trope.
Herm Edwards always seems a bit off to me so its not surprising ASU may go off the rails. It is a bit satisfying though.
“You play to win the game”
Why wouldn’t you cheat at this point? Nobody ever gets meaningful sanctions. Look at Ohio St, they won a title like 2 years after all the stuff with Maurice clarett and many others.
Finally we agree on something.
Thing is, they’d make a lesser school like Oregon State an example knowing our luck.
Exactly. Oregon State is small potatoes. Would get hit with major sanctions.
Money talks…..
Cal’s class so far is interesting. 2 DTs and 3 DEs and that’s it. Assuming they will lose QB Justyn Martin to Michigan
Isn’t Michigan also pulling that QB from Fresno? After landing a 5-star in the previous class?
Martin still showing love to Cal recruits on Twitter. Obviously a Michigan offer is tough to ignore…interesting to see what happens there.
What QB thinking about their future would want to play for Jim Harbaugh? He runs a boring offense and he’s developed exactly 0 QBs into NFL-caliber players.
Yes, he recruited Andrew Luck, but he was top-5 QB in his class and he is a certified genius, so of course he was going to Stanford.
What’s your deal?
Too be fair, Colin Kapernick and Alex Smith are good QB’s Harbaugh developed too. Although, I do agree, he hasn’t done well at all at Michigan.
I was speaking more to his time “developing” QB prospects at the college level, but I would also argue that Smith and Kapernick only developed when they had Greg Roman as their offensive coordinator, who has been known to be great for mobile/athletic quarterbacks (now with Lamar Jackson’s success too).
Program prestige also makes an impact on recruiting so there’s more than development going into a recruit’s decision. Some players would rather go to Michigan to play in front of 107k people vs 64k at Cal. Much more visibility as well. Obviously Harbough hasn’t been super successful but there’s more than qb development that might make the Michigan offer more attractive.
I’m just saying I dont anticipate Martin sticking around Cal. Still collecting offers, took a visit to Miss State recently. He doesn’t seem totally content with his Cal commitment
NiceBeav, I read your comment as exactly that. I think MisterBlack thinks Harbaugh is overrated and I agree. None of this is directed at you, I don’t believe. We appreciate the info…
Creek water, spot on, the prestige carries him and I am sure he has a good line to explain his shortcomings. He’s a charismatic person and that goes a long ways with recruits.
Exactly. It was a commentary on not understanding why a 17yo QB would be more attracted to play for Harbaugh than a pass-heavy West Coast team.
Also, there’s been generally poor television exposure for PAC teams compared to other conferences, so maybe that’s a factor.
PAC12 after dark! Lol. As if being late isn’t bad enough, PAC networks aren’t even available with some providers. Hopefully that’s something the new commish can fix.
Jimmy Kimmel LA Bowl to feature #1 MWC v. #5 PAC, Dec. 18, SI-FI stadium.
Saw the Las Vegas bowl got changed up to include a Pac and Big10 team now, and moved to December 30th, at the Raiders new stadium.
So I guess the Jimmy Kimmel Bowl is the old Las Vegas Bowl.
I actually hope OSU gets into the Vegas Bowl. Been wanting an excuse to go check out the new Raiders home.
LA weather should be better that time of year, though
B10 opponent would be better. Lotsa fans would stick around for Vegas-style New Year’s debauchery…
Thought i posted this earlier but i guess it didnt work.
Nemec has 1 extra visitor listed I wasnt aware of. 4* Cb Zeke Berry out of DeLaSalle in CA.
Initial win totals from Vegas are out, and Beavs open at 4.5 wins (-120 over). Over should be a good bet to take.
I started a new June Recruiting Part2 thread because this post was starting to get bogged down
