Utah @ Oregon State (Game Week)

Below are my thoughts from the comment section of the prior thread. Nothing has changed, so I’ll post them here.

Didn’t get to see Utah last night, but under KW I just assume they will be well coached, disciplined, and physical. Has anything changed? If not, then they have the advantage. Always assumed this was a loss. I think we can be in the game and possibly steal it, though, given October in Corvallis has a feel to it and there should be some electricity in the crowd. Just not sure the Beavs know how to stay in a game like this and ultimately finish it if they do have a lead. Beavs seem on par with the PAC physically at this point, but mentally what I saw vs WSU was weakness. Next step is overcoming that.

I’m going to say Utah wins by 17. Something like 31-14.

Go Beavs.

    • Good assessment. I am siding with you on this one. Seems to me that either we lose by a couple scores, or we get the USC-Nolan and can pull off a close win. Likely the first case, but I guess you never really know with Nolan, so far. Was the USC game an anomaly, or was it a preview of things to come? I’m leaning on anomaly based on the last 2 games, with a hope the run game can click and Nolan can connect over the top

  1. I think this is a game where the defense should load the box and play man, and force Utah to beat us with the back-shoulder throw, at least for the first half. If they burn us, fine; switch to a zone in the second half. They’re going to score, but I’d rather take that chance.

Hopefully Lindgren/Smith learned that Chance is a game manager at this point and will call plays where he doesn’t have to sit forever in the pocket. Utah will be coming after him and that pocket will collapse pretty fast.

  2. 3
    2

Utah looks like the best all around team in the Pac right now. They still have a few deficiencies, but at the moment everything is clicking.
Beavs lose this one because our DBs cant cover their receivers and Rising pulls off multiple deep downfield back breaker type plays.

  3. Utah is a physical tram that plays a little on the filthy side. JS is not nearly as intense as KW or at least doesn’t appear to be. I think the beavers make a game of it, but in the end utah gets the win something like 37-24. Given how unpredictable that conference is this year, I suppose anything is possible but I think JS and his staff gets out coached and out played again.. I hope I’m wrong but I don’t think so. Go beavers and let’s not attempt any fake punts unless we have to.

  4. Utah looked bad on offense to Start the season. Now they are clicking with rising at qb. Just like wazzu, Beavs don’t seem to match up well against a team like Utah. If Nolan is going to have success, he is going to need some big plays by receivers. Unless JS used the bye week to whittle down his receiving rotation, I don’t see why things would change. I agree with you angry. Read that again. Beavs lose 34-17.

    • Beavs match up pretty evenly with Utah scheme-wise. It starts with the run for them and we’ve been effective shutting it down this year.

      • I agree. Both teams match up much better than last year when Utah had the obvious advantage, and we had a chance to win it on a last minute drive.

The coaching advantage skews heavily towards Utah, however.

  5. I’m not ready to write Nolan off as a game manager. Drops and WRs not getting open have been a huge problem. For me the the biggest key to the pass game isn’t Nolan but consistent play from his weapons.

What I really want to see is consolidating the offense around fewer guys, and the ones that have demonstrated reliability. Dial in our chemistry and make the plays easier. Bench Musgrave, Beason, and Champ. Build around TQ, Gould, Harrison, and Lindsay/Bradford.

    • I think that our low-volume pass offense is a really bad match with playing 10 wide receivers. So many different WRs doing different situational things, it’s no wonder that there are mistakes and miscommunications. Get half the guys off the field and let the other half get comfortable with Nolan and I think we can dial in with an efficient pass game.

  6. I agree with consolidating players but mainly because it would allow you to play with tempo. Every defense is going to slow things down and substitute D lineman when you rotate WR and RB every play.

Was planning to watch this at a friends house, and we usually go with drinks to match the theme of the team we’re playing.
Finding a good Utah themed drink isnt easy though. Any suggestions?
    Near beer doesnt cut it

  8. I would like to see Gould get more opportunities in this game and not just situational one and done plays. Also would like to see a 2 back shotgun option formation as well with Colletto as the option QB. Using more of Colletto in the FB position would be good in 2nd and long or short yardage situations.

I don’t see the defense sliding backwards anymore than they did last week. I see more of a 28-24 type of game. With a BYE week, Nolan has been out of the news and able to focus more on his mental aspect of the game. I see him having a performance like the USC game. Defense will get 2-3 turnovers and a 4th down stop when it counts. Special teams will have a bigger impact this game as well I feel. We cannot gamble with not punting the ball midfield. Force Utah to go the length of the field to score versus gifting them 25+ yards of field position.

    Beavs win 28-24

    • Yeah, I’d have Gould or Irish run a go route and let Chance throw it as far as he possibly can at least once a game. The both have 4.35 speed

      • “…let Chance throw it as far as he possibly can..” that might result in an INT. :)

But seriously, I agree the deep ball has to be used once in a while, but it has to be a valid threat or it won’t be respected. As an opposing D, there’s little reason to treat it as authentic outside of the USC game. It needs to be set up, in terms of the play(s) before it, and putting the personnel in to execute it. I’m all for Tongue, Harrison, Dunmore, and Lindsey getting those kinds of opportunities.

Other plays I’d like to see:

Lowe or Baylor as the “FB”, getting the quick handoff up the middle off a quick count. (a la Quizz Rodgers v. USC)
Lowe or Lindsey lining up behind a blocking back, and getting a pitch. (a la James Rodgers @ UW)

  9. PFF matchup scores:

OSU passing game vs. Utah secondary: 70-64
    Edge to OSU

OSU pass blocking vs. Utah pass rush: 64-65
    Even

OSU running game vs. Utah run defense: 75-65
    Edge to OSU

Utah passing game vs. OSU secondary: 67-72
    Slight edge to OSU

Utah pass blocking vs. OSU pass rush: 54-62
    Edge to OSU

Utah running game vs. OSU run defense: 65-60
    Edge to Utah

I know there are some holes in my methodology, but just based on performance thus far, the Beavs appear to have the advantage. It looks like both teams should be able to run the ball effectively.

      • They need to UNDERSTAND they can compete with them and beat them. Since Andersen, I’m not sure a staff has been of that mindset, and it affects the players.

OSU has the talent and the physical ability to play with and defeat Utah, but if they don’t understand it, they likely can’t. Another long losing streak that needs to end.

It will likely be competitive (at least Smith teams are) and usually interesting, but ultimately disappointing for self-inflicted reasons.

        Here’s an interesting graphic:

Utah always has five or six 25 y/o 385lb Polynesian DLs, so we might not be able to run on them. Game will be on Nolan and the passing game. Therefore, I’m not overly optimistic. KW is the best coach in the conference. Hoping for the best and maybe a letdown from Utah. Hopefully the Beav’s did some intense self scouting during the bye week.

    • Not always, this year Utah appears to have only one starting DT over 300 lbs. They did lose another big boy to season ending injury and have a few who have not yet played.
I expect coach M’s boys to be able to open holes for Baylor/Fenwick….even Nolan/Colletto.

Utah rushing D giving up 30 more yds per game than the sometimes maligned Tibs Boys.

      5

He seems depressed and/or very tired…seems to not want to answer questions, especially about injuries. I get the sense he hates the media.

        • 2
          2

Odd that both of those questions were from Mama Machado. She must read AB.

Also funny that her question were the ones he seemed most annoyed with.

          • I’m glad she reads the blog and asks the questions people pose here. They are relatively specific which Smith may not want to give answers that are revealing to an opponent.

          • 1
            1

Yeah Angry, he seemed tired to me. Then he was asked difficult questions. To me I was happy with his answers. He basically admitted that things have to change, he didn’t sweep it under the rug. As Bill mentioned he can’t give up what they are gonna change. It remains to be seen if we see it in action though.

          • Not really since they have the lodge on her site and their fans I’m sure are asking her to ask those same questions. Same with Daschel. It’s a pretty obvious question about 3rd down D.

I’m sure smith is tired of answering the Gumbs question by now. It doesn’t sound like he’ll play this year. Hopefully it doesn’t mean forever.

          • It seems like a few years back it was pretty common for a HC to say a player was suspended and keep it at that. Smith won’t even go that far. I guess it’s his prerogative, but it would be nice to know something with a key player like Gumbs unless there are legalities involved.

      • Can’t blame him for feeling tired, what with recruiting trip and juggling schedule. Players can get rest and catch up with school, coaches probably work harder on bye weeks. Just guessing.

Fire someone over not getting a shot that doesnt keep you from getting a virus that 99.7% of people recover from. What the hell we coming to as a country?)) Liberty? Whats that? Medical choice? Nope, do what your told. Constitutional protections be damned. Shame where we are headed.

I mean to go to public schools, you have to have several vaccinations. Polio, measles, hepatitis, tetanus, etc. Been that way for decades…

        • 24
          3

It’s a slippery slope for sure….I don’t agree with the mandates either, but I chose to get the vaccine to protect others. Makes you wonder when it will stop — whether if the tables were turned, if I would give up millions on the table to hold steady in my beliefs. I have family members who gave up their jobs, because they don’t want to take the vaccine. I’m also a hiring manager, and there are a lot of people who don’t want or need to take it for various reasons. This is a huge factor in the exodus from the job market we are seeing right now. Right, Wrong, or Indifferent, it needs to be an individual’s choice.

“What the hell we coming to as a country?” Seriously? See January 6th.

Once you lower the bar, its hard to ever raise it again, whether football (28 years of losing seasons, then Mike Riley as “the high bar,” and the subsequent false narrative you can’t do better than Mike, despite what Erickson proved) or Donald Trump as president.

We’re a young country (people forget that), and after over a 190+ years of aspiration and idealism and aspiration, we’re getting mired down in incompetence and fear.

            3

Oh, you mean the “insurrection” – I don’t think people have really seen anything yet; take a man’s livelihood away from him for no good reason, and see what happens. We have the ‘boiling water and frog’ analogy at work here and ‘they’ are trying to see how far they can push us. I think somebody said ‘when people have nothing to lose, they lose it’. I think we are closer than you think.

When some of these politicians begin to be held accountable for the decisions they have/are making, then maybe things will change.

The gravy seals are making their choices and now whining about the consequences??? Having to be responsible for your choices is probably a good reason to murder people in a great civil war or something though right?

            Pathetic

99.7% do not recover, more like 98.5% in the United States.

He’s a state employee and the state said get the vaccine or get fired. If he doesn’t like it he can search for employees Trent elsewhere. How is this any different than mandatory drug testing, morality rules or work place behavior compliance??

Liberty doesn’t mean you can do whatever you want without consequence. It means you are free to make decisions and live with the results. If you want liberty with no responsibility you are just a snowflake and not a member of society.

I’m kinda amused that people are up in arms on here now that it happened to a rich guy who will be totally fine financially if he is even just okay with money.

For 2 years people with compromised immune systems have been getting fired or given ultimatums to stop remote working. People who are literally being told to choose between seriously endangering their lives and the lives of those that depend on them or their ability to make money. I now know 7 people who have died in my autoimmune disease server and 4 of them contact traced back to work. The other three we just don’t have details on to know.

Now that it’s happening to people who just don’t want to on the basis of Facebook posts we better pull out the torches and start the civil war.

98-99%. Not a real huge difference. Surely not the global killer its been made out to be. But again lets just force it or fire them . How you support that is so foriegn to me but your medical issues that you have wrote about gives you a outlook I dont have. You have lost people you know with the same issues. Here is what I know about the shot. A guy i work with lost his Dad after the 2nd shot. Another guys daughter, 22, had seizures, blood clots and just got back home after open heart surgery. My daughter in law has had monthly cycle issues since her forced vaccination. I approach it from that angle as well as screw Kate and her total over reach. Top it all off with fact that the vaccine does not keep you from getting the bug anyway. It does keep many scared and many companies making a whole lot of money. So there is that.

          • 3
            10

Uhhh…99.7% vs 98.5% is massive? .003 vs .015. Thats five times more deaths dummy.

It obviously is a global killer since its killing people globally? Obviously you didn’t look at the Johns Hopkins link because the US has one of the lowest mortality rates. Some countries are nearly to 10% and global average is over 3% now. The conservative estimate is 5 million people dead world wide, I guess thats no big deal? Just more than the population of Houston and Chicago combined.

No vaccine keeps you from getting anything.

Heres the recorded stats on Vaccine side effects, deaths and the available data. You are awful at math but if you do some division and multiply by 100 you can see that the percentages are very little compared to even your made up figures.

            2

Well the point was the numbers given flucuate and no one including you know any different. I didnt market this as the end the pandemic vaccine. The pharmaceutical companies as well as the government and willing dupes did and still do. Slo joe himself said it the other day- get the shot to end the vacvine. Total BS. You want endless booster shots? Have at it because to stay “safe”, and thats what this is supposedly about than you and others can keep sticking out your arm.

          • 2
            11

Yes numbers fluctuate as you get more data, shocking. You work with the data set you have which has barely changed over the last year. Mortality in the US has gotten much better due to therapeutic techniques but it also fluctuates with ICU getting overwhelmed.

Almost all vaccines require boosters. Its rare to need more than 4 for any given disease variant. The Flu vaccine is literally a booster almost every year except when they add new variants. They rotate the variants on a 3-5 year schedule so if you get the vaccine every year you are protected from many variants.

So basically what I am getting is you are bad at math and too lazy or stupid to look at data and understand it when you can just let a pundit scream the truth at you. You can’t even look at links when they are dropped in your lap. Cool thanks for wasting everyone’s time again.

Your constant rude comments just lends more to my belief that your biggest issue is being told something that you don’t like to hear. Flatten the curve has morphed into this total over reach by the government. You think that is fine because your worried about getting the bug. Fair enough, I don’t want it but I’m not getting the shot and someone losing their job over refusal is wrong. Since you believe that all should get it answer me this- why is it only hard working and productive members of society have to get it but anyone on welfare or is one of the 10’s of thousands crossing our southern border are not mandated? Why are the state legislative and judicial branches exempt as well as the the same federal branches and staffs? As the paranoid germaphobe that you seem to be than why some and not other need to be vaccinated? Are you ok with that? If this is so damn horrible- why not everyone?

I’m rude cause you’re an idiot and you spew bullshit that gets people killed. Stop being an idiot.

Just what I expected. You cant answer because there is no reason why some have to get a shot and others dont. Im killing people? Whenever I see your name hear the term useful idiot will come to mind.

“But again lets just force it or fire them . How you support that is so foriegn to me”

Early on, it was advised that people socially distance, to wear a mask, to avoid attending large events and gatherings, to cleanse their hands regularly, and if you happened to test positive, to report your test result to local health authorities and follow up with contact tracing:

            * Folks chose not to socially distance

            * Folks chose not to wear a mask

            * Folks attended large events and gatherings, and attended small events and gatherings in their homes

            * Folks chose to fly on airplanes and traveled while waiting on the result of a covid test, and subsequently exposed others

            * When folks tested positive, they refused to report that positive test and refused to cooperate with local health authorities when they came to initiate contact tracing

            * Folks did not bother to wash their hands more frequently

These things subsequently were made into requirements when and where they could be, and folks balked at mandates because it somehow impinges on their sense of what their “constitutional rights” are.

Now, vaccines are widely available. The U.S. was among the first to develop and deploy them.

We’ve plummeted to > 40th in the world, in terms of percent population that is fully vaccinated. Peer nations who started much later than us, have now surpassed us.

Because their people, who are no less “freedom” loving or concerned about their personal rights than we are, dutifully chose to follow NPI guidelines, their healthcare systems are in a far better position than ours. Their local economies will benefit as well in the long run, as people opt to travel for vacation and invest their money there.

          • The concept of general accountability (applied to both citizens and government) has eroded to a breaking point in the United States. Not to sound doom and gloom but… look around. We can all improve substantially.

I called this as a potential distraction for WSU this season, here it goes. Also brought it up in the last thread and it was dismissed.

There’s something odd about Rolovich. There’s nothing wrong with being different, but he’s definitely different, and he made a choice. I’m not at all surprised by the outcomes. He’ll be fine financially, and he’ll get job opportunities.

      • Wazzu plays BYU tomorrow. Should be another good game this weekend.

As much as I don’t like BYU, part of me would like to see them throw the game and try to set an NCAA record of losing by more than 222 points to protest the AD.

If there’s ever an opportune time to do something that ridiculous, it’s now.

    • Agree, but seems strange he was cheerleading on the sideline a game or two ago.
Sure seems like long term discipline for something that hasn’t come to light…yet.

    • 1
      2

My guess is still that it’s vaccine-related. It has to be something easily remedied for them to keep him at #1 on the depth chart, but not play him.

    • It could be something medical related that Smith is not allowed to be disclose. There has been similar cases in college for sickle cell, cancer and auto immune disorders. None of us have a clue so speculation is pretty pointless.

What sucks? He was paid $3M annually, his employer had conditions. He had a choice whether or not to comply with those conditions, like all of us that are not self-employed. He can go coach somewhere else and be happy, WSU can hire a coach who is willing to meet the employer terms. Too much is being made of this for the wrong reasons. He didn’t lose his choice, he kept it and exercised it. Good for him.

      • 10
        1

They changed the conditions of a signed contract – in the middle of it and changed the terms of his employment. I’m not a lawyer, but that is a big no-no. You can’t arbitrarily do that without any repercussions no matter what the asshole of a governor we have thinks. This will eventually end up costing the state of WA a lot of money, but Inslee had to make his point – nobody defies the dictator!

        • 7
          1

Was the contract actually changed? That could be a legal case then. But from what I hear the State mandated it, not the contract was changed. Also, there could have been clauses in the original contract for things like this. We don’t know without seeing it. Possible legal case if the contract was changed without both parties consenting, but I don’t think that’s what happened. I think the State law simply overrides the contract.

Angry stop being logical. We’re doing our best to figure this out with no details, expertise or materials to review. We’re literally make it up as we go man.

          • The ‘state’ mandated nothing; the governor did, using the excuse of an ’emergency’ that he feels has been in effect for nearly 2 years. (yes, he is trying to throw ‘climate change’ in there too to extend the ’emergency’). These emergency powers were always meant to be used on a short term basis – 30-90 days at most for natural disasters, etc. In order for the state to codify anything that has happened would mean that the legislators would have to develop a ‘bill’, meet in their separate committees in both the house and senate to discuss/make changes, hear testimony, pass it or not and send it to the governor for signature. None of that has happened – everything is being done by a ‘mandate’ by the governor. It is getting to the point for why even have a legislature – when you have a dictator that can make all the decisions for you. Say goodbye to a representative republic…

They’re being denied all across liberal states. Doesn’t mean it’s constitutional or that there isn’t precedent for winning a lawsuit over it.

            1

Its not constitutional. ORS431.180 reads -Interference with individual’s selection of health care provider, treatment or religious practice prohibited

            5

If Washington really wanted to, they could probably codeify it into law. The vast majority of public sector employees are complying with the governor’s mandate, so there’s no need to really do it at this point.

It would be a much different situation if the governor mandated booster shots, though. There would be mass civil disobedience and people would not comply. That would force the legislature’s hand.

          • 1
            5

It would be a much different situation if the governor mandated booster shots
Very little doubt it’s “if” but “when”. Governor will use same “logic” to mandate boosters.

Remains to be seen if citizens react differently to booster vs original jab mandates.

          • That case was about the constitutionality of the law. Biden and our dear leader Kate have issued executive orders which is a whole different animal. Jacobson didnt want to pay the 5$ fine that went with refusing the vaccine.

      • 1
        1

Actually since Valley Forge. It’s one of the oldest legal precedence Cree in the United States. It’s only about 100 years younger than religious freedom and justifying institutional theft by might equals right.

    • 5
      5

Why? He made a choice. There are a lot of jobs that have more requirements than getting vaccinated that pay far less. My friend just got a job as a River boat pilot. Pay is $500k per year but he’s almost alway on call, is away from family for long periods of time, must get vaccinated, is very dangerous, lots of responsibilities and stress, and he can’t drink alcohol. He hates that he is required to get vaccinated and would love to drink a beer and see his family more but chose this profession because he loves it and it pays quite well. He could always make a choice to do something else.

  13. The obvious reason for the terrible 3rd down defense is that our pass defense is horrible. You hold your opponent on the first 2 downs and then on 3rd they’re forced to pass and they can’t stop it. Rolo bailed out the Beavs a couple of times in the first half calling draws on third down which failed. Once he went away from that they were pretty much guaranteed to get it unless de laura made a bad pass.

The question is if there is a whole lot they can do about it or are the players just bad in coverage? I’ve watched them blitz and then they either don’t get home or the QB gets the ball out quickly. They drop back and the QB has all day to wait until he finds a receiver. I think it’s a combination of not having enough guys that can win 1 on 1 battles to get to the QB consistently and that too many players are a liability in coverage.

They need to put out all of their best pass rushers on 3rd down and 5 or longer to see if they can’t get better pressure without bringing too many guys that there is a guy wide open on an easy pass.

    • You’re probably right on scheming for a better pass rush.
Alternatively, what about using Colletto and McCartan on third and long to cover the short pass game? Use their height (or even Riley Sharp/Cory Stover)?

      • Well Mccartan would have to be healthy and if he was he might be better used as one of the pass rushers. I would say our best pass rushers are probably AHJ, Stover,Sharp, Rawls, Schad, Lolehea. Hodgins probably 1 of the better DL and Mccartan and Gumbs would be very helpful. It just doesn’t seem like anyone besides AHJ is consistently putting solid pressure on the passer. Might need to bring corners or safeties more often in these kind of situations.

I know a lot of people are putting the defensive struggles on Tibs which might be partly justified but I also think it’s more than just him. OSU hasn’t had a good defense for a long time spanning back to Riley including 3rd down defense. FWIW Daschel said that he’d talked to coaches in the pac12 and ex coaches and they said that it’s not Tibs scheme and that it’s more the personnel. Run defense is improved and turnovers have increased. They are a good pass defense away from being a good D.

        • Yeah, I realize McCartan has been out lately.
Share your frustration here, the lack of pass rush was especially disturbing vs WSU. Couple that with no “classic” sack vs a team that was giving up over 3 sacks/game.

FWIW, Utah has been giving up just 1.5 sacks/game, third in the PAC (Beavs #1 at 1.0 s/gm).

        • Personnel is mostly this staff’s now so if it’s not good enough to run his scheme that’s going to be a bigger issue. Also, I’d say that his lack of adjustments in game are concerning as well. Seems like each year there’s a new excuse for why defensive struggles are not Tibs’ fault but after awhile there is 1 common denominator. There’s definitely been some progress but is that scheme or a better athlete? Will be interesting to see how the 2nd half of the season plays out and if JS sees the need for change.

          • Yes but they are still young tho. We don’t generally get guys that are ready to contribute large amounts effectively right out of high school. Aside from transfers most of the high school recruits aren’t playing too much.

Look at the starters or big contributors on defense when recruited.
            Grant-walk on
            Oladapo-walk on
            Sio-walk on and former Oline
Sandberg- 1 other offer from some weird ass college
            Anderson-walk on
            Skelton-walk on
That’s a lot of guys that weren’t thought to have a lot of talent out of high school. I think they’re still trying to stock up talent. Especially at DL and secondary. But I hear what you’re saying. Not sure what to think quite yet because sometimes guys are put in the position to make the play and they fail to do it.

    • I’ve noticed that the blitzes seem “delayed,” maybe intentionally or unintentionally. Many times they are so close, I thought maybe they’d start getting there on time. But as you point out, the don’t, at least not often enough.

“They need to put out all of their best pass rushers on 3rd down and 5 or longer to see if they can’t get better pressure without bringing too many guys that there is a guy wide open on an easy pass.”

And as someone else pointed out, quit putting ILBs in pass coverage, and bring in a safety or two (Julian) instead.

      • 2
        1

I noticed people saying this but watching the highlights they had 5 or 6 DBs out there quite a bit. Lots of the times it was DBs getting beat in coverage. There were quite a few times I saw Hardge, julian, grant and the 2 corners out there. You have to remember that just because there are 2 or 3 LBs out there there can still be 5 or 6 DBs depending on how many lineman Tibs is using. Also I saw people complaining about the 5 wide but the 4 wide hurt us just as bad if not worse. They were hurting us running the ball out of the wide so taking out LBs would just make that worse. Not to mention the best pass rushers are the LBs.

        • Not true at all. Robert’s and Speights played all 71 snaps. Compared to 41 and 28 respectively for Julian and Hardge. Your point regarding LB presence entirely negates the premise of playing dime or quarters defense. You play it specifically to keep someone like Roberts (27 season long coverage grade ) out of coverage by taking him off the field and placing a bigger / more mobile DB in the box in their place. When the offensive personnel and down and distance dictates it.

Roberts played the whole game. Every snap. Speights too. This is why they gashed us against the run. Our coaches left these guys in regardless of personnel so they were chasing slot Wr’s and or blitzing with the Cougs in 5 wide and empty back formations. They were gassed mid way through the 3rd quarter as evidence by the backup coug back carrying Omar for like 5 yards in the red zone. Sub Fisher and Colleto in for f’s sake.

Playing the ILb’s the whole game was Inexcusable against the Cougs when Julian is excellent in run support and also our best player statistically in coverage. The frustrating thing is We now have the personnel to match up against those Coug empty 5 wide and 10 personnel offensive packages and just never used it.

If we want to start getting off the field on 3rd and long obvious passing downs and against 4 and 5 wide sets our personnel Grouping should be:

DT: Rawls (best havoc rate from d linemen)
          Rush End: Stover
          Rush End: Sharp
          Olb: Hughes Murray
Olb: Lolohea ( second highest rated defender)

Lb: Speights ( he can blitz or be used in coverage / Spy) 60 coverage PFF rating not great but not Roberts 27 bad. You can rotate Roberts in here as well but ONLY to blitz which he is solid at.

Dime/ SS: Julian ( our top rated defender. Great in coverage and run D) Playing him at dime gives him flexibility to play in coverage but also be in the box for tackling support on any short pass plays or if the opposing team gets cute and tries a wr run or RB draw / screen play out of 10 personnel

          CB: Wright
          CB: Austin / Jones
          FS: Oladapo / Arnold
          Nickel: Grant / Hardge

          • Dude did you read what I wrote? I never said that Roberts didn’t play all game or say that julian or Hardge played as much as they did. I said you can run a nickel or dime package with 2 or 3 or 4 LBs on the field.

          • And are you calling DE in the 3-4 a rush end? Why would you have lolohea at linebacker instead of DE (his true position and which he has size for) and have stover DE where he was moved from. I think you’re agreeing with me tho that we need the best pass rushers on the field in 3rd and long situations tho. I would go with lolohea and Rawls at the ends and use Schad at DT. The DT is going to get doubled and I don’t know if Rawls would be as effective there but I get the idea.

          • Technically from a 3-4 standpoint, the D Line in general is there to clog holes and maintain gap integrity. QB pressure is mainly provided by the outside backers so they should be our best blitzing players and if both are being used then we get those mismatches with the inside backers taking on the outside backer pass responsibility. It’s not ideal to even have the outside backer having to take a slot receiver in a 4 or 5 wide set but definitely have a bigger mismatch if that ends up being the middle backers. We also seem to give a lot of cushion from a DB standpoint which is allowing receivers to run routes unimpeded and also allows even those shorter crossing patterns to turn into long gains. Believe 1 of the WSU tds was in that exact situation with a shallow drag, we were playing off as we did most of the game and wr had easy catch over middle and turned into a 55 or 60 yd td.

Defensively, there are some younger players in the secondary but the 1st string front 7, in large part, are mostly Jr or rs-jr and that’s with the free covid year so really they would be Sr or rs-sr. Lolohea definitely the youngest then I think it would be Omar next who is technically a Jr and in his 3rd year starting. At a minimum, not sure why Colletto wouldn’t be subbed in for Avery on those passing downs if they are intent on keeping 2 middle backers on the field.

          • It’s really difficult to jam in 4 and 5 wr sets if your playing man with pick routes and such. If the jam and drop into zone that’s a little bit different. With Colleto I’m sure that he couldn’t be any worse than Roberts in coverage and o think he has a better feel for where to be but I remember last year he looked slow on plays. I specifically remember wr screens 1 team was running and he was slow getting there to make the play and didn’t and people here were pissed and wondering why he was on the field. He’s looked better in the limited amount of snaps I’ve seen from him on defense this year and he has that pick.

I read in the local paper today that Oregon should reach herd immunity sometime in December. I’m guessing WA can’t be far behind. Could the Wazzu administration just hire Rolo back when mandates are lifted, say early next year?

    • 12
      4

Was thinking the same thing….lots of people waiting for others to get vaccinated, fly under the radar ‘til this whole thing blows over….makes you wonder if/when vaccine mandates will end, or if this is what to expect going forward….covid will be with us for a long time, it is the new flu, expect boosters to be around for a while, will employers mandate them too?

      • 3
        1

The mandates and everything being pushed on us will continue until we the people stand up and say enough is enough. This is 100% about controlling and dividing the people. I am not saying there isn’t a virus and we need to take precautions, but if there is so much unknown about what does and doesn’t work, where are the trial results saying this doesn’t work? Where are the numbers stating x # of people received y medicinal care while B # of people received C medicinal care and group D is the control group. If everyone gets vaccinated and gets boosters, there goes your control group for a trial. Everything for me comes down to trust. At this point, I do not trust those whom do not have access to my medical records to tell me what is good for me. I haven’t seen my doctor for an illness in over a year. I have been out and about without a mask on for almost 5 months now. I have gotten sick with colds, but tested negative each time I’ve tested for Covid. I’ve had an antibody test done…no antibodies. So if everyone like me is supposed to get Covid at some point, how come I haven’t yet? I’ve had a co-worker get it. I’ve had friends get covid. All of them recovered. Vaxed and unvaxed. Until I see the ramifications of the mRNA in the next 5-10 years, no shot for me or my kids.

My understanding of the religious exemption is that they can continue to work without the vaccine if an accommodation can be made where they can work without being in contact with others, such as from home or hidden in an office somewhere. I think there’s an option of going on unpaid leave if you get the exemption and then returning when the Covid smoke clears, but I’m not sure how that would work here.

    • 7
      2

So they think every “vaccinated” Oregonian will contract and survive C-19 so they have natural immunity/antibodies? Because that’s the only way to reach herd immunity with a “vaccine” that allows you to contract and transmit a disease.

        • 9
          2

Should have pushed therapeutics from the start. The Vaccines have overall been a failure but lots of money has been made for a certain few.

People die from COVID because of the inflammation that the virus causes, usually in the second wave. We knew this from the onset based on what happened in SARS-CoV-1 nearly 20 years ago.

It doesn’t make sense to not give some anti-inflammatories when people are just starting to get symptoms.

          • 5
            10

They have? They never stopped therapeutics. How the fuck is the vaccine a failure? Cite your sources and statistics showing that the vaccine does not work. Please show how vaccinated people are filling hospitals and dyeing at the same rate. For once back up anything you say with factual information.

          • 8
            1

My skepticism towards the mRNA and adenovirus vaccines pertain to previous efforts into making coronavirus (and general retrovirus, such as Dengue and HRSV) vaccines. I chose to get my shots because I am in a high risk group and the vaccines are successful at attenuating the symptoms of viral infection (I believe by almost a factor of 8). However, the main question is the one that the CDC and FDA has been asking for years:

What is the viral replication rate of someone who is vaccinated compared to that same person if they were not vaccinated? The obvious answer is: it’s almost impossible to tell. But the answer to that question is important to knowing where immune-escape variants such as R.1 come from.

          • Yup, thats basically the age old race against nature with all preventions in medicine.

There are legit questions with MRNA but I don’t think most people understand the biology enough to understand them sometimes.

            1) You are hijacking cells to manufacture proteins. Was that cell making something we needed? Theoretically if you deprive your system of enough proteins for a time you could spur autoimmune diseases. We are not even close to mapping the human protein genome or understanding what all of them do in different systems. Its a serious question that is mostly answered by doing trials and hoping it doesn’t kill a bunch of people or have serious side effects.

            2) We don’t know everywhere that the synthetic proteins interact in our system. You could create a protein that interacts with brain chemistry, endocrine systems, immune system or whatever. We just don’t know enough to be sure. Again this one is mostly answered by trial.

          • My stance was that the mRNA vaccines should be rolled out worldwide to the highest risk cohorts, while whole- or attenuated-virus vaccines were distributed to the general public (or, a peptide-based vaccine that has been proven to be safer for males 18-30).

Reason being is that, while the conventionals will not stop people from getting sick with the virus, it does prime their immune system for thousands of combinations of antigens, as opposed to just one for the mRNA. Herd immunity is likely to be reached faster in the general population. That way, we do not have to worry about spike-specific mutations like we may if the mRNA’s are distributed to billions of people (I emphasize may).

The dilemma we’re facing is that the time scales for how fast mutations generate (~25 min average) is too fast for Pfizer to roll out an updated vaccine (95 days) in the event that a deadlier strain surfaced. That might not be a huge deal now because the strains are getting less deadly, but it’s something to consider for future pandemics.

          • The roll out that way would be practical but never would have worked logistically or politically.

The J&J vaccine and the MRNA do the same thing. They prime you against a pathogen. The difference is the mechanism for how they accomplish it.

          • 1
            2

Clip 1: I don’t see the issue. Sounds like people just don’t understand what ‘effective’ means in relation to vaccines. Here’s the definition used by the CDC. Be warned it’s pretty long and complicated so I get why it’s not widely understood.

            https://www.cdc.gov/csels/dsepd/ss1978/lesson3/section6.html

Clip 2: the Stats he is upset about are mostly for 70+. That age group is more likely to die from anything even minor Covid. A 70 year old just going to the hospital is something like 25% more likely to die than a 20 year old (from memory). Most of the UK deaths he is talking about are in the 80+ category. Every single death rate is lower in the UK than in the February peak and total deaths are about 12% despite total infections being similar and delta being more deadly (per initial data).

So yeah he has a point that vaccinated people are still dying but again vaccines are not a cure just a very good tool. People will still contract and spread a disease on a vaccine but severity of disease, viral load and outcomes are significantly reduced. If he did a full comparison to February instead of cherry picking the data to support his argument then it wouldn’t look nearly as convincing.

          • Clip 1: I don’t think you understand what a vaccine was previous to the COVID vaccine and what the message has been from the start and how its constantly changing, but you dont even want to discuss those facts.

Clip 2: 70% of the deaths of all age groups are fully vaccinated. See issues with clip 1, vaccine isn’t working anywhere close to as promised. So yes, lets mandate it and force people to lose their livelihoods.

          • 1
            2

Clip 1: The biology has never changed with regards to how vaccines work. If you are uneducated and just listen to someone’s simplified definition instead of understanding biology then I can’t help you. Since the late 1500’s nothing has changed except mechanism. The concept of inoculation is you introduce a pathogen in a weakened state so that next time your immune system sees it it is ready. This was true of licking puss off someone’s arm and it’s true of MRNA.

Clip 2:Again almost the entirety of deaths in the UK are people over 60 who have higher death rates from any kind of infection. If you compare the death rates to infections of any age group to February then to now you will find a huge drop off. If you compare February rates to just current vaccinated rates it’s even more obvious. Not sure what you are having trouble with? Looking up the data? Doing the Math?

I’m happy to help but I don’t see what the challenge is here.

More Nike love: ESPN FPI currently gives the Ducklings the 17th best chances of making the playoff, behind obvious shoe-ins like Coastal Carolina and unranked Clemson.

  18. I didn’t realize LSU and Orgeron reached a separation agreement for the end of the season.

Hope they’ll consider relationship counseling, this could be so hard on the kids…

Seriously, it will be kind of interesting to see if the team responds to him or just kind of packs it in.

Just to lighten the mood this morning…..

My soon to be 15 year old was apparently complaining this morning about the odor from his face cleaning (oxy pads).

Son – “these oxy pads are irritating my throat”

Dad Whiskey – “Are you eating them???”

  20. OT: Big fast human Titans RB Derrick Henry:

During his 76-yard touchdown run Monday night against the Buffalo Bills, Henry reached 21.8 mph, according to NFL Next Gen Stats. That’s the fastest run for any NFL ball carrier this season and the fastest of Henry’s career.

    And yet …

“Still too slow,” said Henry after the Titans’ 34-31 victory over the Buffalo Bills.

Henry is 27 years old and about 250 pounds. How could he possibly be that fast?

“I’m from Florida,” he said. “Florida boys, it’s in the water. If you’re from Florida, you’ve got to have speed.”

Well that and maybe some PEDs?

I remember Brandin Cooks was clocked at something like 22-23 MPH when he played for the Saints. But he’s not 250 lbs…

  21. Back to the game, this game is squarely on Nolan’s shoulders.

Similar to the USC game, a lot will have to go right in this game for the Beavs. Nolan will need to be efficient and hit an occasional deep ball to keep the Utah defense from creeping up. Hopefully there are more sweeps and play action plays. Not sure how much of a leash he’s got but if Nolan is struggling, maybe Noyer can give the team a shot in the arm.

Last year the beavs ran for 133 yards but 40 of that was a run by Colletto. Avg 3.3 on the ground otherwise. This year the yards will be just as tough which places more pressure on Nolan to move the ball through the air.

Statistically the beavs have a decent run defense but as we saw vs UW there are holes. Most teams choose to throw as that’s the major weakness in the defense.

Utah scored on every possession in the second half vs ASU. Tibs will need to make the right adjustments this week. Obviously on third down.

Utah is on a roll right now after they switched QBs. Run and pass efficiently. I don’t think this is a trap game for them.

Should be a close game as Vegas is predicting. This isn’t the kind of game where the beavs can fall behind. They’ll need to score early and if Utah has the lead, can’t let them go up two scores.

Weather shouldn’t be an issue. Rain but no wind. Doesn’t provide either team with an advantage.

I don’t expect much increase in attendance due to game time and weather. Would be nice to see more people at the game though. Students should still pack the stands but if the game is out of hand by half time, they will empty out quickly.

      • Tibs will have to be creative with blitzes. As noted above, it does seem like blitzes are delayed or just slow. My thought is to switch out LBs for safeties and rush them in obvious passing downs. Even if they don’t get home, they could hurry the QB into a quicker throw. Julian is a great candidate for stuff like that.

If the d line can get pressure on it’s own, it’ll be a major win. The super majority of sacks and tfl are by the linebackers and DBs.

        • 1
          1

The blitz package against Utah last year was really, really good, after watching the highlights. We were consistently in the QB’s grill. The problem was missed tackles.

There were a few instances where, if a tackle was made, Utah would not have scored a TD later on in the drive. We cannot afford to have so many missed tackles this time around.

  22. 6
    1

I think you guys are seriously overrating Utah’s ability to stop the run based on past years rather than their performance this year. In every one of their games this season either the primary back or a running QB with significant carries has averaged 5+ YPC on them. ASU killed themselves with penalties, so I think that game looked more lopsided than it needed to.

Also, unlike past years, their DL does not have a size advantage over our OL.

Their MO this year has largely been outscoring other teams. Their offense is good, but our defensive strength matches up well with it. This should be a closely contested game like UW was.

    • 3
      1

Outside of the beating we took a few years back, most of our 5 straight losses to Utah have been close from a scoring perspective and this should be the same barring an utter collapse from either team. Biggest defensive concerns are the 3rd down issues and I can see Rising using his legs in this game and picking up some first downs that way. Pretty similar stats carrying the ball as Nolan but actually has a higher avg if I’m not mistaken. Always been an issue for us with the mobile qb. WSU didn’t need to use their QB mobility and with Utah running a more traditional style of offense, I can see more need for Rising to run. Think this game more than others so far this year will really rely on limiting turnovers and capitalizing points when possible.

    • I think the Beavs absolutely need to run the ball well. I don’t expect them to be able to run like we did on WSU tho so we can’t be 1 dimensional and rely on it. Another key factor will be containing rising and forcing him into mistakes. If they can keep him from running too effectively and get him flustered I think they have a really good chamce to win this.

Overall if they can go plus 2 in turnovers and control the ball and time of possession I think they’ll win this game. If they don’t win the turnover battle I don’t think they have much chance the way their offense is playing. Our defense just isn’t good enough to get stops regularly so the offense would really need to be clicking and scoring on almost every possession which we’ve seen at times but unless chance and the receivers get their act together they won’t win.

      • Yeah, turnover battle will be key in this game. Rising seems to be pretty good with the ball though…only 2 picks and I’m not sure about any fumbles lost. 2nd highest rated qb in the country I think right now. Definitely need to take care of the ball to be in this game.

      • If you take out the OSU game WSU had a top 3 pac 12 rushing defense. It ranked better than Utah’s. ASU ran all over Utah last week. As well as San Diego St and BYU. I don’t see this game being any different. OSU has the best rushing attack in the Pac 12. Teams stack the box and still can’t stop them.

    • WSU has long shown the only way they can win is by getting fast, undersized guys and designing an offense to get them in space and 1 on 1 situations.

Lindgren hasn’t shown he’s able to do that yet with probably the fastest roster we’ve ever had.

      • I have a friend that’s a WSU fan and he said pretty much that. Said it’s easier to recruit smaller quick guys and spread it out than it is to recruit big maulers that will manhandle guys. It makes sense if you think about it. We always talk about how hard it is to recruit lineman especially on the defensive side. There are plenty of fast guys out there that maybe aren’t true number 1s but could thrive in a spread out passing system. The defense held them back but let’s not forget that leach had an 11 win season there.

    • Interesting but not surprising I guess as he was linked to some other offers last year but I think JS bumped up pay a bit and he stayed. Could definitely see some shake up in the assistant staff this off season. Whether taking other positions or potentially JS making some changes on his own.

  23. People have been commenting about how close the Utah game was last year. If I remember correctly they kicke field goals in the red zone like 3 times on 4th and short. I was ecstatic each time they decided too as I thought they would’ve most likely gotten the first every time. So had coach W gone for it the game could’ve easily been a blow out.

  24. OLive had an article that suggested this should be one of the most anticipated OSU home football games since 200, given that Utah is in the lead in the Pac South, OSU tied for the lead in the Pac North, and most recent games having been pretty close.

This has the potential to be a close, competitive, and entertaining game. As much as Smith’s coaching gaffes frustrate, the team is entertaining and these players haven’t quit, though they may have been looking past WSU or thought it would be easier.

I hope it is well anticipated and well attended, and the crowd is loud.

Also, don’t know if you saw this or not:

“Elijah Jones, a grad transfer cornerback from Kansas, has seen limited action this season, but it’s not medical. Oregon State has given most of the defensive snaps to cornerbacks Rejzohn Wright and Alex Austin.

“We’re not down on EJ at all. It’s just the guys in front of him,” Smith said.”

i don’t know who is better, Austin or Jones, but I’d like to see more of Jones on the field opposite Wright this Saturday and see how he fares.

    • I don’t know who is better either because I haven’t really seen jones. Austin is at least a good tackler. A lot of people said that jones was listed as the probable starter before he got hurt and that’s not true. It was looking like Austin from all the reports as he was running with the 1s. Sometimes it’s easier to say its because the better guy isn’t playing I guess.

    • “We’re not down on Chance Nolan at all. It’s just the guys in front of him,” Smith said after naming Sam Noyer the opening day starter at QB.

Games are set. We have games on Wed/Thurs/Fri/Sat this week. So you have less than 24 hrs to get your first pick saved.

Looks like a good slate of games this week

  26. In reading an article in OLive about getting Nolan back on track and in “Hawaii-Idaho-USC form,” I’m a little concerned that they might go away from the run too much to try and do so. He certainly isn’t playing consistently up to his demonstrated potential, but the RBs are money and the receivers need to catch the ball.

“Nolan’s first Oregon State start was last December against Utah. It was a choppy performance, but Nolan had the Beavers in a position for a win before coming up short on a last-minute drive.
“He didn’t play very good in that game, and he’d be the first to tell you that,” Lindgren said. “I feel like he’s come a long way in just his knowledge.”
Nolan has plenty of motivation to bounce back. He hasn’t forgot last year’s game at Utah, or the recent performances.
“I’m excited with my knowledge and our playbook and having a second chance to go after the Utah defense,” Nolan said.”

Hopefully a well-scripted and executed first drive gets him into a good groove.

    • Playing same team/style of defense a second time will tell me a lot about Nolan’s potential to improve in the next year or so. Big game for Chance. Still thinking Utes roll

Rolovich announcing that he is going to sue WSU for wrongful termination. Sounds like he’s going to burn all his bridges and show everyone where the bodies are buried in Pullman. Interestingly enough, he’s not arguing against the mandate. Probably knows he’d lose that battle.

WSU might have to pay him off to keep what ever secrets they have kept secret. But rolovich may cost himself any chance at another high level coaching job with his threats to expose WSU.

Lots of visitors coming this weekend.
    Some notable ones:
Justius Lowe(local 2022 athlete who has been seeing his stock rise lately)
Rashid Williams – 2022 4* WR from Cali
    Tristan Davis – 2023 DE
Cooper Jensen – 2023 TE commit
Trey Leckner, Andre Jordan, Tj Crandall and lots of guys from the FSP 7on7 team will be in attendance too.

More to come. I’m checking on Nathan Elu, the recently offered OL from 2022 class.
And MBB has 2023 visitor, Nolan Winter

  29. OT: Anyone going to the game Saturday and interested in checking out Peavy, the new College of Forestry building, the forestry school is having a pregame open house. The invitation we received said there would be wine/beer and food, I wouldn’t count on any of that but it is an opportunity to check out the new digs. Registration/RSVP is required…https://events.oregonstate.edu/event/college_of_forestry_homecoming_and_open_house#.YXBIABrMKUk

    • Hopefully we don’t make it worse and promote a smaller time feel by showing new West side as TV angle with center logo as this image hints at. It would be less grand than the East side which has a bigger time feel and we wouldn’t even get to see the rowdy student section which provides the best atmosphere to be seen for recruiting.

Hadn’t seen this perspective of the new Reser Stadium West stands.
      Thoughts? https://t.co/0LIRt6Uk7t

Completely agree. Maybe I’m a sucker for symmetry but I feel like that should have been a top priority even if the east side design wasn’t great. IMO asymmetry here just looks shoddy and piecemeal.

          • 3
            2

It is piecemeal and looks like it. It looks to me like, in the rendering anyway, structure that is much less substantial and it detracts from the overall facility in a similar way to what it replaces.

“If you don’t do it the right way now, it’ll never be what it should be – and its there forever.” – Robert DeNiro

“never” and “forever” are slight exaggerations, but, point taken.

At least the forestry center is well done! Academics > sports.

Would have been cheapest to build it all at same time back in early 2000s. Certainly should have been done by 2012-2013 time frame. They expanded the South end zone to be ready for that, but think that was a mistake and more was done for scoreboard reasons. IMO tearng down the West should have taken priority and South Endzone could have been done then also if desired. They had mirror renderings around 2012-2013 so that was the hope. Program just never took off enough again to make it happen. No we are left with another mismatch for a long time that just is newer but not that great. Probably will seat 39K which is boutique but never allows for much growth in fanbase if if Smith does take us back to regular 8+ win seasons and is threatening to make a Rose Bowl.

          • It’s best they didn’t build the mirror side. The capacity would have been too much. I think the speculation was to get capacity up to 55k with the south end enclosed. Low 40k sounds about right with current trends. Unless Salem somehow triples their population.

          • If they didn’t double deck the south end zone, then a double decker West Side would have had capacity between 47 and 49K if they wanted. Could have been on lower side with more premium loge seats with a handful of them with firepits. Think it would have been doable for a mirrored look overall with some slight seating variance to keep overall capacity close to 47K. Probably didn’t quite need that but think there was a path had the program done better. Unfortunately been a bad last decade of OSU football with not many highs to keep fans more interested in supporting program in person.

          • Firepits. There’s something I never considered, are there examples out there?
I’m with Bill, low 40’s sounds about right, maybe even high 30’s.

          • Utah has some firepits now where you can sit with a group of 8 or 10 people in your premium loge seating. I expect capacity witt the West side as designed now to be right around 39K. Hoping is atleast 39.5K and 40K is most it will be from indications by Barnes.

          • I wonder what is the age distribution of season ticket holders? Not to sound morbid, but a lot of season tickets for the west side should likely becoming available within 10 years.

          • Here’s a question: why do we have such old ticket holders? People who went to school between 1970-2000 were in school for the most putrid period of school football history, and they would be in their 50s-70s now. You’d think that that wouldn’t be a very invested group on average. On the other hand the 2000s were a great decade for us, so you’d think we’d have a solid core of fans in their 30s-40s.

  30. They didn’t have to mirror the East side but they at least could have tied it together with the East side and the South end zone. It looks like each new section started from scratch with no effort to tie it in to the existing structure. I can’t believe they didn’t even attempt to wrap the south end zone into the new side.

    • True the seating isn’t tied together BUT the concourse does appear to be. I think something i read said you would be able to traverse the entire stadium, which would be an upgrade

  31. So for those saying that Utah’s run defense isn’t very good. First 3 games they averaged 160ish yds and the last 3 100ish yds. The fact of the matter is that utah is playing at a really high level on both sides of the ball right now. Utah leads the league in TFL and sacks. Beavs don’t give up many TFLs or sacks so that will be something to watch.

  32. This might have been covered in the past couple weeks. I have not looked at anything Beavers since the last few plays of the WSU debacle. Couldn’t believe the pass plays at the end, given how well the run was. It appeared to me that we had a lot of guys in coverage on defense, but UW and WSU receivers had lots of separation. When on offence, seemed a lot of stacking the box by UW & WSU for the run and limited dbs but our guys couldn’t seem to get any separation. Most of our passes the past two games have been with a defender hanging on. IS USC that bad that Chance looked legit?

    • I’ve noticed chance doesn’t like to check down and I wonder if defense’s are seeing that too.the last play on the WSU drive is a perfect example. Lowe was open on just about every play and when he finally threw it to him they needed 19yds and got 18. This offense needs to stay on schedule and he needs to take what the defense is giving him. He needs to do a better job of reading the defense and getting it to the open man. There have been a lot of those times he throws it to a guy with a man all over him but another man is wide open.

        2

I think part of this is a scheme issue. The primary routes are typical slow developers that require a good read from a qb. Not a big deal for a good NFL QB but a bit of an ask for a guy with 8ish P12 starts.

I think he’s taking to long to make reads but I also think they need to dumb down the routes a bit.

        • Seems a smart guy like Lindgren would “dumb down the routes a bit” this week, at least for the first couple series just to give Chance a chance to regain his confidence.
That and stopping the carousel of WR’s, settle on just a couple to allow chemistry to build.

        • I don’t think they take any longer to develop than any other teams routes. If the That’s kind of my point that if it’s taking too long or pressure is coming check down to the RB or a TE. 2nd and 7 is a lot better than 2nd and 10. Sometimes the deep routes aren’t there or the defense has the right call on. I think he could do a better job of working down the line of scrimmage to put pressure on the defense and giving him the option of running or passing and letting the receivers get open. Sometimes it seems like he just decides to tuck it and run it and puts his head down and ends up running into a lineman. Rising does a good job of knowing when to scramble and when not too. He scrambles to pass instead of just running. A few times Nolan should have just ran it on a scramble but instead forced it. Like the pass on the first Washington drive to Musgrave and the interception right before halftime against WSU. If he could do a better job of knowing when to run and when to just scramble to pass he would be very dangerous. It almost seems like that’s been a lot of his problem the last few games.

    • Yes, SC’s pass defense is worst in conference; around 110th in the league. In yards/a pass D, UW is 3rd, Utah is 20th, WSU is 47th. But he shouldn’t be like a light switch. His passes were often wobbly and dropped of course. I think UW messed with his head.

    You were warned:
I notice some of the CBS pool leaders didn’t get picks in for the game now in progress between Coastal Carolina and App State. Angry, sweaty, sexy, and adam giving the rest of us some charity?

I’ll take it!…..need all the help I can get.

  34. NBA starting this week.

Payton II and Eubanks on Warriors and Spurs. Kylor Kelley is on the Spurs G League team.

ex beav – Jaquori McLoughlin is playing for the rockets.

Stevie and Tres are playing in the Italian League. Ethan was on the Bulls preseason roster but didn’t make it and he’s not on the gleague roster for some reason.

    • Funny, i almost gut bombed him today, but since he wasnt planning to official visit till later in the season I decided to hold off.
Beavs have 4 solid OL building blocks coming in this class.
Seems like we’re usually holding out for sloppy 3rds and 4ths right before signing day when it comes to OL recruiting in past classes

      • Yeah it’s very encouraging to see them getting solid guys in the trenches. 3 solid DL although Hickel and Donaldson are more edge guys but you never know how their bodies might develop. Next on my list wishlist would be another true DL and a star DB maybe in the transfer portal.

        • Front 7 looks pretty good for the next few years.

At some point, we have to improve HS recruiting in the secondary. It’s still just plain abysmal.

But, that’s what happens when you’re at a program with limited resources.

  35. 15

Elu would get constantly flat backed against inferior competition, got a long ways to go / big project here. The 295 is probably 65 lbs to heavy for his weird slow twitch frame. Prone to holding when beat and lacks explosion and competitiveness. Coaches and teammates question his work ethic, nobody trusts him. Well documented issues with authority and accountability. Made our evaluation difficult by routinely hiding and no-showing for media availability. Cut form the Ben Symonds / Kyrie Irving / Cole Beasley cloth. Hates healthy communities.

    • Lol. Ya that coach Michalcik doesn’t know how to evaluate OL at all. He probably can’t even teach a team to run block or prevent TFL.

      • “ More important than Elu’s offer sheet, however, is the fact that Michalczik watched him in person and immediately knew he was the right guy.

The relationship took time to develop, but the commitment from both parties happened quickly.

“I’ve been with coach Michalczik for awhile now… for a couple of months,” Elu said. “We started talking in the summer and I really appreciated that he stuck with me. He came down to watch my game and that was really stressful for me. When he came down it was really special to me. It felt like he really cared. The day after the game he offered me, and that was a great day for me. I love OSU.”

        From OLive…

      • He’s the starting LT on the top team in what is probably the best HS conference in the country. It’s good to get guys that know what it takes to win.

        • After years of 250 lb lineman projects I’m happy to get a dude this size even if he is a project. From his tape and the conference he plays in I would say he was just missed. Expect us to play defense on him.

          • My thoughts exactly! That’s why I commented on his size above. I’m sure he will need to change his body composition, but we have a great strength coach who will help transform his body.

This is a bit easier in some cases than trying to get a kid to put on 50-60 lbs.

I liked his film. In particular, how he finished his blocks to the whistle. He may have a bit of nasty in him that you just can’t teach.

          • Also shows he’s not a sheep. Cause only sheep would cover their mouth when sneezing.
Although I dont know that a sheep would have the ability to cover it’s nose, because of the hoof and limited arm flexibility, so that shoots holes all over that theory.

          • Who was the last OL that they gave a scholarship to that was that small who wasn’t Morano? I feel like they’ve been getting some big guys the last few years like buckles and darling. Also isn’t that 1 of the things michalcik likes to do is get athletes that have a good frame and coach and bulk them up?

          • Ya that’s old I think somewhere he’s listed like 30lbs heavier. That’s another kid he had do a private workout and offered him.

          • Yeah, you can’t teach quick feet. Morano has the frame and feet, just needs to bulk up. Guys who played te in high school make the best tackles. Already athletic, just add bulk. Downside, it takes a couple of years.

Leavengood was listed around 260 coming out of high school I think.

          • Was he a Smith guy? He was brought in as a grey shirt so nothing wrong with being that weight if they’re willing yo grey shirt.imo IMO

          • Technically he came in on the 2018 class which is Smiths (kinda). He was definitely an Anderson grey shirt but smith retained him and he stayed so I would give Smith credit for his success.

    • Looks fine on tape this year. You sound like the Yelp of recruiting evaluation or maybe a spurned lover. “Take my offer or you will be destroyed in random internet blooigggsssss”.

6′ 5″? Gentleman, we have our Isiah Hodgins replacement…hope his short area burst is adequate, catch radius looks decent. Doesn’t look like he’ll go down on first contact (the anti-Flemings).

    • 6

Oh I’ve heard even worse scouting reports about him. He doesn’t chew with his mouth closed. Doesn’t hold the door open for elderly people. Drivers 25mph in a 20mph zone. He once ate the last slice of pizza without asking if anyone else would like it also. He always forgets to put the twist tie back on a loaf of bread. He doesn’t cover his mouth when he sneezes. He uses his speaker phone in public. Terrible just terrible.

    • Kinda makes sense. Wins always make recruiting better and frankly the west coast is one of the better places in the country to be a lady from a cultural perspective.

    • 6
      1

Winning and general support from the school are better out west for women’s sports. It’s why the PAC 12 is the conference of champions and will be for a while. Just not in football.

Osu being able to offer keys to a dedicated gym is a huge advantage. Very few schools have that.

  36. Regarding the critical post above about our new recruit Elu. It’s sure funny to me 8 hrs after that post, A-nemic from O-live posts an article about teams negatively recruiting against us. I wonder if Andrew was deep in the bottle last night and spying on Angry. He puts up a post which inspires the article he wrote today lol. I mean it takes a special person to write all that nonsense above, but Andrew is one I could picture doing just that.

On that subject, Union Mezcal is legit. If you want to write like Andrew just pick ya up a bottle of that!

  37. Thanks to the guys that sent links for team stats. A few keys that are really hurting Oregon state aside from 3rd down defense which we all know is terrible.
    1. They are tied for 12th in takeaways but tied for 83rd in giveaways. Chance needs to take better care of the ball. He’s throwing way too many picks for how many attempts he’s taking.
    2. Way too many penalties per game but this is probably inflated by the USC game because aside from that game it doesn’t seem glaring.
    3. Pass defense all around. Even though they get 2.2 sacks a game they have a sack percentage that ranks 102nd in the nation. Teams have been passing against the Beavs a lot but they don’t get home often. They’ve played a lot of pass happy teams but because the Beavs can’t stop it teams are encouraged to keep going to the well. Part could be that the offense is good and teams are playing from behind and maybe that the run defense is good. Ultimately the Beavs allow 7.4 yards per attempt. That’s horrible and it’s no wonder they can’t get off the field.

Let’s hope this staff has done a good job of making adjustments in the bye week and can come out ready to take care of business in the 2and half of the season. The easiest fix is the penalties and Nolan taking better care of the ball. Pass defense isn’t quite as easy of a fix but they need to try or do something different because what they’re doing clearly isn’t working and is holding this team back.

  38. Way OT……just a diversion to kill time before kick off:
The critical thing about our commit, Elu was worth a chuckle and brought up a question. So, he leaves the twist tie off the bread wrapper huh? Makes me wonder, what ever happened to bread boxes?
The old “twenty questions” game often involved asking, “Is it bigger than a bread box?”…..everyone had one on the kitchen counter.
    Thoughts?
    Or down votes?

    • We have a bread box on our kitchen counter. If you need to do any size comparisons, send me your measurements and i’ll let you know if it’s bigger or smaller

    • Plastic becoming normalized as a container for bread. It does a better job than Han a bread box. Perhaps we should head back that direction though.

  39. 4
    5

When I’ve picked against us this year I end up being wrong, so my prediction is 56-28 Utah based on the following factors:

    -Utah’s discipline on defense
    -Utah’s improving offense
-Lindgren’s apparent lack of concern where Nolan’s struggles are concerned.
-Smith’s staff being pretty retarded with their personnel (Colletto needs to be on the field more)
    – more Nolan picks (I predict 3)
-no improvement on 3rd down D
-more really stupid 4th down calls.

Let’s hope the trend of incorrect predictions comes true.

  40. Quotes from the GT:
Julian, “I don’t think we came out in the second half like we came out in the first half. So I think we’ve just got to keep the pressure on. If we get off to a good start, we’ve got to keep going,”

Tibs on the bye, “They got a little bit of a break and then come back and (had) great practices this week starting on Sunday, after a little bit of time off, which is not always the case. You give football players a couple days off, often they come back, it takes two or three practices to get them going again and that has not been an issue”

  41. CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State men’s soccer team resumes Pac-12 action this week as it hits the road to clash with No. 1 Washington in Seattle, Wash. on Friday at 5 p.m. The match will be broadcasted on the Pac-12 Network. The Beavers are 8-1-2 (3-0-1 Pac-12), second in the Pac-12 standings, and are ranked No. 8 in this week’s United Soccer Coaches rankings.

  42. PHIL STEELE REPORT:

Series is tied 11-11-1 but the Beavers have lost the last 5 (3-2 ATS). Last year Chance Nolan in his first start threw for 202 yds and OSU was without RB Jefferson. Utah scored on 5 of first 6 driveswith 1 punt in 1st 3Q’s and led 30-10 after a 54 yd PR TD. Utah had just 21 yds in 4Q and OSU went 65/8 and 61/9 for TD’s (5:07) then were SOD at 31 (2:47) and 4&8 SOD at 36 :34 left, 30- 24 and the cover (+11’). Last time here (‘19), OSU suffered its worst home loss S/’91 in a 52-7 blowout (+14’). Utes have won the last 3 in Corvallis (2-1 ATS) and Utah is 11-7-1 ATS as an AF the last 6 years. Oregon St opened the year with a loss at Purdue but switched to Nolan at QB and he led them to a 4-0 record including wins over USC and Washington. In their last game OSU on 4&19 pass got 18 yds and was SOD at 5 with :33 in a road loss to Wash St 31-24. Utah opened slow at 1-2 with losses to SDSt and BYU and trailed Wash St 13-7 in the 3Q. The next 6 Q’s Utah was dominant with a 17-1 FD edge to finish off the Cougars and then dominated USC on the road. Last week I used them as a Best Bet and ASU open 75/12 TD Utah open 75/11 TD 7-7 but ASU led 21-7 at half. Utah had 4 2H drives and went 75/9, 68/6 67/11 and 82/12 all for TD’s with ASU punting twice and having a 51 yd FG blocked in 35-21 Utah home win. The situation really favors the Beavers fresh off a bye and at home with Utah off B2B huge games vs Pac 12 South foes. The talent edge favors Utah as they look like the best team in the Pac 12 and they are playing their best ball of the year and Whittingham is 9-2 ATS on the Pac 12 road and Jonathan Smith is 2-9-1 ATS as a HD.

  43. These Phil Steele reports always seem to say “all data and signs point to Team A winning, so our model predicts Team B will win”

  44. I think this team should consider increasing their TOP even more. Generally with their run game they usually control it but it might help to try to go even slower and more methodically. A few reasons I think it could help.
    1. It’s very demoralizing for the opposing defense.
    2. It’s very tiring for the opponents defense.
    3. It gives the Beavs defense a chance to rest.
    4. Allows the Beavs to make adjustments on defense.
    5. Limits opponents possessions and outside the pressure on them to score.
    6. Potential to lull the defense to sleep to increase the effectiveness of a big PA deep ball to mix it up and keep them honest.

Just think it’s a dumb boring game. I know very popular the world lives it.. blah..blah…blah.
Couldn’t wait until my kids gave it up and moved on to football, basketball and baseball.

          • Funny, my wife tells me all the time to keep our kids interested in soccer so she doesn’t have to watch another little league game in her life.

          • I hear you. My wife feels the same way. I had soccer sort of forced on me as my 18-year-old is a good player and I must admit a least the games go by quickly. My 14-year-old plays baseball and my wife does everything she can to get out of going to the games!

          • Agreed. Soccer sucks. Zzzzz

My wife also hates baseball. Specially a pitchers duel that ends 1-0 or 2-1.

Think the men’s soccer team has more wins this year than you did your entire career coach.

Huge win for men’s soccer. #1 in RPI now and will surely move up in the polls and playing for a top seed.

    • Idk. UW is 2-4 and moral must be pretty low for the dawgbois. UA doesn’t have anything to lose; figured they would win at least one this season.

How did we lose to WSU?

The little I caught of that game tonight, neither team looked very good.

Is Oregon St really back? Or is it a case of how terrible the pac-12 as a whole really is?

      I’m leaning towards the latter.

OSU could be very good if they didn’t have the bonehead Smith calls (4th down) or putting the best players on the field and if they could learn to play D on third down. The players are there (except for maybe DL position group) for the first time in a long time.

        • Nothing I disagree with.

Play to their strength (run game) and they can beat anyone in this conference.

Can they? Absolutely. Will they? The jury is still deliberating.

    • Doesn’t really matter for the CFP at this point. Only Nike has a chance and…let’s be honest, does anyone think they really have a chance?

      • There’s not much in their way, so I’d say they absolutely have a shot.
They should be heavily favored against Colorado, UW and Rolo-less WSU. So UCLA, OSU and Utah are the last remaining tests(as well as the South winner if they get that far)
I still think they’ll stumble at some point, but they have a decent shot of winning out just by showing up, running the ball and playing defense.

  45. Interesting watching this Kansas-Oklahoma game. Kansas lost momentum when they got away from running the ball down OU’s throat. Reminiscent of Lindgren ignoring what works and losing tempo in the game throwing away drives.

  46. Herbstreit realizes the Quacks are a very average team, right? Trying to figure out why he goes orgasmic for them on almost every play.

  47. How does the UCLA punter just drop the snap, lol.

And then he gets his helmet ripper off by the duck defender. What a terrible series of events for him. Probably costs UCLA any chance to win this game.
