Jonathan Smith demonstrated the backbone Riley never had, sacks Tibesar.
Sunday evening Smith makes the move for which many here were pleading, names Trent Bray to the interim DC job.
- What immediate changes to the on field results do you expect?
- What scheme changes can realistically be expected before the CW?
- What does Bray have to do to have the “interim” removed?
- Thoughts on how you expect the rest of the staff/team to react?
- Who can Bray change into the next Vontaze Burfict?
Have at it, a much more positive thread than the previous (very well named) Sunday Blues!
Feel free to go general……as always…(as if you degenerates need to be told)!
Expectations and accountability.
I’m impressed by JS.
Bray still has Legi on staff which in my opinion is the biggest hurdle keeping the defense from having success. Fix DL recruiting and play, develop a pass rush, and clean up CB play(no more sagging 5-10 yards off the WRs)
In a way I feel a little bad that Tibs is going to take the brunt of the blame for yesterday’s game and Smith/Lingren will get a pass. That loss cant be pinned entirely on Tibs. The offensive gameplan was garbage and that 4th down call leading to a short field/quick score for Colorado was the game defining moment.
Statistically our offense has over performed the last 4 years. Defense not so much.
I’m just talking about yesterday’s game at Boulder.
True that the defense has always been sub par while the offense has had it’s ups and downs.
Agree, JS and Lindgren will be off the hook for the debacle in Boulder. Not likely to face the music this season.
He wasn’t sacked because of one game though
Agree NB. You have to play complimentary football. That was a bonehead(Pettibonehead?) decision.
I wouldn’t be shocked to see Suiaunoa “not retained” after the season. It took a catastrophe for this to happen when it did, but I guess it’s the bright spot of losing to Cal and CU.
Inoke Breckterfield would be the perfect replacement. OSU alum that played alongside Smith, and coached Aaron Donald at Pitt and TJ Watt and Wisconsin.
THIRD
My guess is there has been tension, players sensed it and either picked sides, played safe, or tried too hard (got out of position) to try to save their coaches, and it blew up in 2 really bad losses.
JS may have given the season new life by simply clearing the air of what could be a fractured locker-room between players/coaches and offense/defense.
Bray may be the guy, but if Wilcox, G Patterson, or Lake are willing and available, I’d take any of the 3 before going with another unproven DC.
Now, run the ball with purpose and see how the defense will respond. I think the defense also knows that a run heavy, run first offense is vital to success for this team.
Perhaps Vidlak sees the field on Saturday as well, Gould gets 80% snaps, and many other requests from AB posters
In a refreshing sign of a “tight ship” organization, I see the OSU website already lists the coaching changes. Now, if JS and Lindgren can tighten up their in game adjustments………hmmm.
There was a firing… but, was there a cannon?
A bit of one
I posted this on the other thread, but Lindgren’s contract ends a few months after the regular season(January/February). So my thinking is, if Smith is wanting to make changes at the OC and DC positions, DC first to let Bray have a few opportunities to prove himself and clear the locker room like @ohiobeav stated above; then at the end of the season look to find a new OC since no one on staff except Smith could or would want to gameplan and call plays. I don’t see Lindgren being retained at the end of the year.
“albeit nowhere near as well as Lindgren has this season. Lindgren is due a hefty raise. His current contract expires just a couple of months after the end of this season.”

Bray’s dad was defensive coordinator for 2000-2002 Beavs….hopefully that includes the Fiesta bowl swagger in his genes.
Maybe this means I can re-subscribe to Sling after cancelling last night?!?!?
We need to offer this kid!

That kid stiff armed 5 other kids half his size. That looked like 4th graders to me. The dad laughing was the beat though. Kid keeping his balance at the end was the most impressive part though. He was not going to be denied.
That was hilarious! Must be a record for most stiff-arms on a run.
Kid is a beast!
Nah…his name is too political.
Kyrie Fisher seems to approve of the firing, haha. That’s pretty harsh. Hopefully its more just about support for Bray.

Carlos Mack one of our DB commits appears to be visiting this weekend per your tweet link.
Looks like my “No news out of Corvallis” comment didn’t age well ?
I’m still shocked you are alive after Utah.
What I wrote Saturday night:
“Yeah, but you could fire Timmy tomorrow, make Bray the DC, and send a signal that an inability to learn, adapt, and improve are unacceptable. Bray wouldn’t change the scheme, but he could at least NOT put LBs on WRs so often, blitz, and make some line up changes. …With OSU up by 4, and CU facing 3rd and 15, it was Timmy Time, and CU gets a 16 yard TD….There is no good reason or probability that keeping Timmy is the best answer for the remainder of this season, or for next year and beyond. None.”
Hell, I’d better ask for other, more meaningful things.
Well, good luck to Tisebar. I expect he’ll catch on as an LB coach somewhere.
I think this will be a wake up call for the D, and may help get out of the funk of the two losses, including overcoming a 2OT loss, and STILL trying to get bowl eligible. Absent some strong signal from the top, I think OSU would have responded poorly this week.
I suspect Smith is probably thinking of a lot; Tisebar had time to demonstrate progress, their bowl season looks to be slipping away, he’s probably not seeing Tisebar as long term solution anymore, and there has to be some extra pressure given the stadium expansion. A bowl game would be a sign of progress and help generate interest in season ticket holders, especially if OSU could close out strong.
Hell, Bray might dial up some blitzes, and the D might have fun. Wright and Jones might get some opportunities for press coverage. I’m good with that, as long as they get to turn and look for the ball.
Or, Bray might fall flat on his face and the D come out flat and give up for the rest of the season. I doubt it. But at least OSU won’t be sticking with something they know is not working.
What a pleasant surprise this is.
With the stupid tik-tok videos going around…it appears you understood the assignment needed to be made by Smith. Next up is Lindgren or Legi?
I would think Legi before Lindgren. I suspect Smith is more hands-off on the defensive side of the ball, and while Smith may not interfere much with Lindgren, Smith DOES make the decision for fourth down, correct? So he’s more complicit if you will with the offensive mistakes, and I suspect more willing to move a D line coach whose unit doesn’t seem to get any pressure or push.
Bray’s assessment of Legi and Bray’s input should be important to Smith at seasons’ end if he is serious about making him Interim.
I’m not convinced that we should be getting rid of Legi just yet. DT is the hardest position to recruit in football especially now when everyone is in demand for that nose tackle that can blow up the spread offense. The TFLs have been up since 2019 and that’s in part due to some improvement on the D-Line. If Hodgins gets healthy I think the unit will play a hell of a lot better.
I want to see Bray call a lot more blitzes. Honestly, how many D1 teams can get home rushing 3?
With the write-up from above being so prophetic, do you have any numbers for the MegaMillions I could use?
What immediate changes to the on field results do you expect? – Less of LBs covering WRs, more blitzing, improved emphasis on tackling (“with violence” i think is what Bray says). More of Jones? Less of Grant? I suspect Julian’s absence will limit his options some.
What scheme changes can realistically be expected before the CW? – I don’t expect major scheme changes. Could they run some 4-3 occasionally? Probably. Effectively? What line ups would he use for four man fronts? There’s no Stephen-Paea-like DT on the roster…
What does Bray have to do to have the “interim” removed? – Demonstrate the ability to correct Tisebar’s flaws, improve third down defense, more consistency in TOs, sacks, demonstrate in-game adjustments, retain recruits and/or improve recruiting.
Thoughts on how you expect the rest of the staff/team to react? – Staff know its a business judged by performance. There may be some frustration about Smith/Lindgren putting the D in difficult positions, but I think Tisebar’s overall body of work speaks for itself. The offense HAS improved now in the fourth year, was the highest scoring team in the Pac and the best rushing offense. The D? Some improvements in places, but overall, not the kind of competitive growth of the offense. The team – Likely some shock, as most of them have not seen this before. I think most players feel like what happens on the field is their responsibility, not the coaching staff’s. It would be interesting to know how many feel strongly loyal to Tisebar, or how many them were frustrated with his approach?
Who can Bray change into the next Vontaze Burfict? Hopefully no one. I’d prefer the next Michael Doctor(s).
For me, success by Bray is having the defense ready to play from the first defensive play. More hair on fire balls to the walls hard hitting swarming defense. Don’t rely on other players to make a play. Get in there and make a play. We had that at the beginning of the year…where did that mentality go?
It’d be nice if the corner or safety doesn’t get out flanked on a read option by the QB. That’s happened to Austin at least three times this season.
Good! Fuck Tibesar. Tired of seeing a defense that is horrific against the pass and on 3rd down.
He can take Lindgren’s pass happy ass with him too. After that first series against the Buffs that included a long pass and zero runs? Aren’t the first couple of series scripted plays? So that was the plan all along? Fuck Lindgren.
Unlike Simple Jack, Smith had the stones to make the move. But only about two years too late. So fuck him too.
And those of you wishing for Lake, Patterson or Wilcox as DC? You really think OSU is gonna pony up for a defensive coordinator? Lmao!
Get real.
Well damnit, the season got interesting again. I was going to pass on the remaining games. I’ll still skip Stanford, but ASU and UO could be interesting.
Oh, and BTW, oob, don’t be taking the Tibs Train out of town now! Stay here!
Definitely a needed move and hopefully can give this team a much needed emotional boost.
People talking about getting rid of Lindgren are being a little ridiculous. I agree that playcalling has been bad especially last game but you don’t fire yhe OC of the best offense in the conference. I think the Colorado loss was mostly on him and not running the ball tho. You know what you have in Nolan and his limitations yet he let him throw 38 times. Nolan didn’t execute but I think all of us know he can’t carry the team and they have a very strong run game use it.
Like nicebeav said about Legi I’m not sure he should be retained. DL play and recruiting has been a weakness of this team. How much of that falls on him? This is why im advocating for them to hire Oregon’s DL coach. He’s a great recruiter and will improve the talent there, should improve the performance of that position, it will hurt the ducks, and it’s a realistic hire unlike a lot of the other names being floated out there. It would be a bit of a gamble since he hasn’t been a coordinator before but I think the risk/reward makes since.
If Bray does well and gets the DC position does Smith let him pick his staff? I think that makes since. I’m an advocate of continuity but when the results have been awful a shakeup is needed. The DL and secondary have been pretty bad and might benefit getting some new faces. If they get rid of Lego I think they meed to really consider bringing in another Polynesian coach to help with recruiting those athletes.
I don’t know that there will be an immediate boost simply because there are problems all over the defense. Do the coaches know the root problems of the defense? If they fix one thing, does it create another issue?
The pass rush is non existent. Is that scheme or talent? Seems like a combo.
Because the pass rush is non existent, the secondary gets exposed faster. The breakdowns in coverage look like a coach’s issue. Sure the players made the decisions but clearly were not coached up enough.
The main thing for me is the scheme and play calls. It’s very clear now that offensive coaches on the other side are seeing tells in the Beavs defense.
And Bray can’t earn the job in the last three games. I would advocate for an overhaul on the defensive side. Bring in a new coordinator and let him make his hires. Bray likely gets to stay as he is the assistant head coach plus his strong ties to JS. Maybe he gets the run d coordinator title next year. Fresh blood is needed.
We need to be blitzing on pretty much every down if we’re going to run a 3-4 without a true monster of a nose tackle.
Nailed it! Linebackers are lethargic because they aren’t blitzing gaps and are basically playing a safety in the box position instead of LB. That’s not defense, thats prevent us from winning defense.
100%. If the MLB aren’t blitzing send safeties and corners with creative zone blitz schemes. I’d rather we play aggressive and risky than prevent on every freaking down. Yeah we will get burned more but we will also pressure offenses out of comfort zones. Great QBs can rip that kind of thing to pieces but then it’s a shootout anyways. Might as well have a shootout with turnovers and tfl
If nothing else, tge upcoming teams won’t know Brays tendencies
Omar’s mom seems pretty happy on Twitter as well due to this change. Obviously there’s likely to be some division on who supports the change, etc but I’m wondering if a good chunk of the players weren’t digging Tibs either or maybe he lost their trust by continually putting them in positions they weren’t comfortable in, lack of adjustments or something else totally behind the scenes. I can’t imagine Roberts likes to play every down and being matched up on slot receivers or the RBs when he has to know he’s not great in coverage to begin with and is likely gassed. Be interesting to see what type of energy this team comes out with vs Stanford and do we maybe see more rotation at the LB spots to keep players fresh or play more to individual players’ strengths a bit better. At the end of the day, there can’t be much farther to fall from a defensive stats perspective so not really much to lose by shaking things up a bit.
There seems to be more to the behind the scenes story, based on her response:
“Is it wrong to be Happy…nope, no, no it’s not!!!! I am so happy this morning, I am still trusting in God to deal with what was done. But @Coach_Bray you got this!!! I love this!????????”
Yes, God is very concerned with sports.
Funny how this reads when the text is pasted into wordpress. Those “??????” arent really question marks in her post. On twitter they show up as little heart emojis.
At some point the defense lost faith and trust in Tibesar. Seems like the defense will rally behind Coach Bray and play as a team. Wont happen immediately, but I do think Bray has been preparing for this for awhile.
Wonder if this affects Andrew Chatfield’s decision to transfer? Pretty sure Tibs was the main recruiter there. I think he has started classes already, so he’s sortof stuck unless they allow another period of transfers with waivers this year.
I was wondering that too as well as some of the other commits mostly the OLBs. I really hope not. I know the reason why Gumbs came here was Tibs scheme.
Gumbs also only had a few options because of tining. He waited till right before the season to transfer and OSU was one of the few remaining schools that hadnt started it’s fall term. If he had gone ti most other schools, he would have had to sit an additional year.
But either way, he’s pretty much had to sit 3 years at this point
This is what a competitive coach does when the program isn’t meeting its expectations. This move will buy some good will from the fans and by all accounts it looks like those closest to the major players on D (Omar’s mom is an example) seem to like the move as well.
As for what I expect of Bray? Nothing, as I’ve written off this season after Colorado. However, if I were Bray I’d go balls out with all the blitz packages that this defense had (did they really even have any?) on first and second downs. On third downs, Bray needs to have the DBs jam those fucking WRs.
Can’t get worse than what we’ve seen before. I personally think you’ll see a much sharper game plan from Lindgren after this firing but if the people offense flops during the remaining games then we might see the same result.
I’m a little sad because the Timmy’s Tots joke was one of the best memes of the season.
Good to see that JS has the guts to make the right call here. It kind of feels like he was waiting around to see if we became bowl eligible and with CU being our best chance, finally made a move because we have to scramble to salvage what was once a promising season.
Bray is definitely going to make some changes because he’s been given this position with that mandate. I think we all know what the obvious ones are. It’s unreasonable to expect anything too major.
Also, Tibesar was still one of our top recruiters, so this isn’t purely addition by subtraction.
Where does the narrative that Tibesar was one of our top recruiters come from?
Top 10, maybe?
He’s listed as one of the recruiters for several of the top recruits I see in C/O 2022
I see his name as a co-recriuiter for Donaldson and Jordan, but As the DC, you’re going to always be listed as a main recruiter simply because you oversee half of the team. Those are both Trent Bray recruits in reality. I wouldnt say most of the players were coming to OSU because of Tibs.
I’d list the following ahead of him in terms of pure recruiting ability(no particular order):
Smith
Lindgren
Wozniak
Coach M
Kefenseh
Doctor
Bray
Adams
KVA
Lose
Cookus
and maybe even Steward for the extra Texas connections.
Tibs did have a big hand in getting Chatfield and Schad to transfer here, so he wasnt worthless, but I never considered recruiting a strength of his.
Coaching either. Basically his strength was he filled a role and stayed out of trouble while filling that role.
Fair enough and good riddance
Jimmy Lake has been suspended by UW for 1 week from all football activities and without pay.
Not sure how you can withold 1 week of pay and bring a head coach back. It’s basically a temporary firing.
Comment from their AD:
“AD Jen Cohen: “While we do not believe that his actions were intentional or deliberate, we can have no tolerance for a coach interacting with a student in the manner Coach Lake did.”
This is insane to me. No tolerance? He shoved his player away from an altercation that had a good chance of escalating. If anything, his intention was to prevent a worse outcome. Is he supposed to politely encourage his players to come back to their safe space on the sidelines?
The Lake train is about to roll into town!
He’ll need a quiet area to rebuild his rep. And he won have to face the heat of big city journalists.
Suspension seems heavy, he didn’t go all woody Hayes on the player. A fine would have seemed appropriate.
The stupidest part of that is the AD saying they don’t think Lake’s interaction was intentional. But they’re still going to suspend him for an unintentional interaction. That’s ridiculous.
Its called leftist woke mentality.
ok boomer
Ha sandy because you know it’s true.
If Bray isn’t promoted permanently, who would be a good listener of candidates?
UW defensive backs coach – $200k a year ttps://247sports.com/coach/Will-Harris-4090/
Ohio State Linebackers coach
https://247sports.com/Coach/Al-Washington-1764/
Keith Heyward LB coach @ CAL? $600k a year.
Stupid auto correct! List of* not Listener.
I dont love the idea of hiring more “OSU guys” who are already part of Smith’s inner circle. It could work out, and those are often the candidates most interested in the job, but it makes moves like firing a DC more difficult for Smith.
Tibesar was easier to let go because he had no connection to Smith. If he was Smith’s right hand man like Lindgren, there’s no way that firing would have happened yesterday.
Think of guy a guy like Cookus. Special teams havent been good in the last 4 years. We still run Champ and Colletto out on kickoff returns. We rarely fair catch and returns almost always result in a net loss. Our kicker was 1 for 3 in crunch time this week(although that 1 was insanely good). Blocked punts have hurt us recently.
But Cookus is pretty much never mentioned as a liability and I doubt Smith has any intention of moving him elsewhere or letting him go. #Family
I’m not a fan of it either, but Heyward seems to be his own person. He is an up and coming coach who will be given a chance at DC at some point. Can we hire a current coach making twice as much as Tibesar was making? My answer is no. We won’t be able to get a coach for more than $600k a year. So Heyward is not necessarily the top choice.
That’s true. Never really considered that aspect when I have advocated for Heyward or Breckterfield.
Maybe OSU could look at poaching a very successful high school coach in the Portland or Seattle area.
Heyward was also a recruiting monster at UO
I like Kurt Mattix at SDSU: https://goaztecs.com/sports/football/roster/coaches/kurt-mattix/742
Or if you want a fast-rising winner, Matt Coombs at UC Davis: https://ucdavisaggies.com/sports/football/roster/coaches/matt-coombs/3966
Ummm, Kurt Mattix, fat guy in sweats, with a mullet, that learned from Brady Hoke. No.
Sure, let’s judge a guy on how he looks instead of the fact he ran the nations #3 defense last year and #11 this year, even after losing 3 starters in the secondary.
From what I’ve read, seen and heard…I’m not sure a Vontaze Burflict style player would be a good thing.
Hopefully UW doesn’t go after Lindgren.
Seems unlikely to me. UW fancy themselves a Big Time program and grabbing a “lower tier” division rival’s OC isn’t Big Time.
I doubt Lindgren leaves to work for a HC on the hot seat.
If I’m wrong, then I know Niner can hire a great replacement or be more involved in the offense himself.
Nice. On a side note…I like to cursory follow alternative sports, and Kitco had a headline this morning “E-sports is now bigger than movie and music industries, and there’s ‘no limit to it.” A while back I said all the pro leagues are destroying themselves, and eventually e-sports would take over. We’re not far.
The gaming industry has been steadily passing the movie industry for years. My buddy told me when GTA5 came out it set huge records on its opening release far surpassing any movie ever. That was like 10 years ago. Some games are like movies you can play now and a far more entertaining. Should’ve been a video game designer. Lol
Theyre still repackaging GTAV and selling it 10 years later. Not to mention all of the in game purchases gamers make to customize their existing games. And online play has become a huge social outlet for many.
There really is “no limit to it”
Never underestimate the power of stealing a cop car and running over a hooker.
The Last of Us (series)
As a medium for story telling, they’re comparable to movies.
In a world of unlimited choice, the end game is fragmentation. We’re going to have the same institutions of entertainment, just smaller and with more competition.
A big part of the defenses downward slide is that they quit forcing any turnovers. They weren’t very good at the beginning of the season but they would get a couple of turnovers and that would be enough with the way the offense was playing. Another factor is I don’t think they were ever very good against the run but were playing mostly pass first teams at the first half of the year. Any team that dedicates to the run looks like they’ll have succes against them.
As far as Bray goes he won’t be able to do a whole lot to tighten up against the run aside from maybe playing more size. The pass on the other hand I think there are things schematically that he can do. He can consider press coverage, subbing out the Lbs, and blitzing more with different more exotic looks. Overall can’t expect wholesale changes but I do think he’ll get the team more fired up then Tibs ever did. Some guys were talking in a previous thread about coaches and how emotional they are. I suggested that the defensive side of the ball reaponds better to higher energy and emotional coaches. On defense I think its more important to play fired up and with aggression. Bray definitely coaches with high energy and I think the team will respond well to that. I’m excited to see how he does and gow they respond to him. Luckily they play Stanford for his first game and not ASU or Oregon. Stanford is still a very winnable game. Lindgren will have to do a better job helping out the defense. Stanford is terrible in run D and Lindgren needs to commit to the run instead of all of these cute deep balls with a backup QB.
This week’s bowl projections from ESPN:
December 18 (LA Bowl) vs. San Diego State
December 28 (Holiday) vs. Clemson
Let’s get 6…
Are my dreams of Vegas no longer a possibility? Not sure where that sits in the pecking order compared to LA/Holiday
My modem failed this morning so I’m way behind…Anyway, I can’t go back and read the prior thread. So if you asked questions for the Stanford blogger over there, please repost them below this comment. We want to get those in early this week.
Is Stanford missing Bloomgren? It seems like they haven’t been the same since he left for Rice.
The Tibs news erased any thought of Stanford.
I guess if I had a question, do Stanford fans care one way or the other that Shaw is the highest paid coach in the Pac? Do they expect more in return or are they just happy to have him, regardless of results at this point because his body of work has been above average?
What’s McKee’s status? What went wrong in their run D against Utah?
Nebraska is planning to keep Frost around a little longer, but on a restructured deal. And Nebraska is expecting some staff changes, but sounds like it’s mostly going to be offense related.
https://twitter.com/ESPNRittenberg/status/1457813743761494017?s=20
I know it’s been, what, 4 years? But Frost’s Nebraska feels like Smith’s OSU. Very close and able to compete with anyone, but without a killer instinct to win games.
If the Cornmen had a kicking game, they would have a few more wins.
Not just a kicking game, but a better offensive line as well. They struggle to open up running lanes and pass pro is suspect at best. If Martinez didn’t have to improvise 80% of the game, they would look better. We have an OL, just lackluster defense and an inconsistent QB.
Being so married to Adrian Martinez and not having anyone to lean on behind him has really hurt them too. He’s just bad. Great athlete that can make highlight reel plays, but terrible and SLOW decision maker. Maybe he can transfer to OSU?
I think the biggest thing to me was the fact that we would constantly rush 3 and be unable to cover with 8 dropping. This is unacceptable. If you have 8 in coverage, you have to be able to cover. When you drop 8 you have an extra guy to help cover their 3 best/toughest targets. Way too many coverage breakdowns dropping 8. The other thing is your two corners are both over 6-1 and pushing 200 pounds. they should be up jamming, harassing and disrupting routes more. They should be swapping between press man and a hyper disruptive cover 2 that they can blitz the corners out of. Especially with the physical safeties they have. Just my opinion.
I think to add to it. Another advantage of a 3-4. Is that you have 4 linebacker spots to blitz from. You can mix up pressure easier. Tibs seemed way too content to rush 3. Given the depth and players we have at Linebacker, we should be constantly bringing heat from the linebacker level.
All that being said, I will finish by saying that Tibesar actually did a decent job getting our run defense to a respectable position. We just were way too conservative on 3rd Downs and it shows in the statistics.
The run defense stat was only better bc opponents saw how bad the coverage was. And then Colorado proceeds to run all over the defense.
Defense definitely rallies to the ball much better than they did when he took over.
But beyond that first step, we’ve not improved enough, especially when it comes to tackling and zone coverage. We saw progression in the angles players took, but that has regressed the last four games.
The swarming defense tapered off around the Wazzu game. They played Wazzu different than they did USC. Ya, we had a lot of secondary penalties against USC, but the defense was physical and fun to watch none the less. I wonder if Tibs was told to cut down on penalties and he took it as go vanilla and cut back on the physicality? That is the only thing I can think of as to why the defense hasn’t played with their hair on fire since the USC game. Utah was better, but it was still not physical like the USC game.
“The other thing is your two corners are both over 6-1 and pushing 200 pounds. they should be up jamming, harassing and disrupting routes more. They should be swapping between press man and a hyper disruptive cover 2 that they can blitz the corners out of.”
Right? Why recruit big and play them small? Do what you describe, and let them look for the ball at about 4 seconds.
Sure, they might give up some plays, but at least trying to change the course of plays.
ASSU game will be a 7:30pm start on ESPN.

Relatively direct, diplomatic intro RE Tisebar. Liked what I heard.
Am I correct that the media did not ask about the ridiculous fourth down call in the third quarter that led to a short field TD. It’s the decision of the game (and his horrible decisions on fourth down in other games) and did not even get asked. That’s terrible. I realize Tibs is the story but JS was given a total pass for his recklessness. How did that not get asked? This fourth down bullshit has likely cost the Beavs 5+ wins in the JS era. Also why does Gould get five snaps a game. That makes zero sense with Beason dropping passes right and left this year. Media needs to do better holding JS feet to the fire. That was disappointing. 1/2 credit to the reporter who asked if the game plan was for Chance to pass 38 times but no follow up on how that ended up happening when there. Game2as not being consistently stopped.
I don’t get the answer to the “did you think about going for two” question. His response that they have confidence in their red zone offense and that they had used their two point plays on recent downs doesn’t make sense. Bring in Colletto. They hadn’t stopped that at all. Great that you like your red zone offense. How about your red zone defense?? Definitely scenario where he/they over thought it.
He didn’t have a lot to say about how the players feel about Tibs in comparison to how they feel about Bray. Seems Tibs had lost the defensive side of the ball and it showed on the field.
Posted this after the Colorado game:
“After a night of rest here is my 2 cents worth. JS is young and occasionally pretty dumb but the potential is there and proof of it shines at times (pass to Gould then 60 yard field goal – great coaching move). So I’m willing to give more time to see if he will mature in his first HC gig.
BUT: He really has come to the end of the Tiny Tim experiment. He needs to change that immediately for JS’s own good. Part of maturing and surviving as a HC is making the hard decisions all leaders must make… if you don’t you won’t be leading long.
I hope he does the right leadership thing.”
Proud of JS – he did the right leadership thing here!
Further proof that Coach Smith reads AB
Any more questions for the Stanford game? If not I’ll fill in the rest with my own.
Where do they see their programs trajectory? Do they think they’ll rebound or has Shaw lost the magic?
I don’t post much and I do enjoy the site.
I would like to complain that they are not giving tickets to vet this year for the game after Veterans day. I have ticket and have so for the last13 years. But I do find this disappointing regretless.
Airborne!
Yep, I was just a cook in an airborne unit loved jumping, most of it that is; the stops could be hard.
Indeed they could…I bounced a few times as well. I spent most of my time in the 82nd Div Arty.
The school sent out an email saying tickets were available to vets for several events this upcoming week including the Stanford game through vettix.org.
Not bad mind you. You do have to pay a small fee it is not bad at all but still. Also you have to sign in with your ID.me account from the VA. To me if you are going to give ticket away do it on your own like they did form the 9/11 game. I must have not been on that list as I’ve called the last two Mondays. Like I said I’m good just a disappointment sorta like the DC ;)
Big picture – what defines success for JS at Oregon State? I’d say it’s simply going to the Rose Bowl. He’ll either eventually get fired, leave for greener pastures, unexpectedly pass, or retire as the best coach in Oregon State football history… assuming he’s got 20 years left. If he makes the Rose Bowl, he’ll never get fired and will have the choice to retire as a Beav or cash in on a more lucrative opportunity. Whatever the case, he’ll always be considered a success as Beavs HC. We’ll forgive him for his boneheaded 4th down decisions and trust he knows best with personnel choices. Firing Tibs is a sign that JS understands the moment. He understands how important it is to make a bowl game this year. If we don’t, the chances that JS can turn this program around are severely reduced. The program is more important than his loyalty to Tibs. Almost everything rides on this season’s success. Win and the momentum can build on itself. The talent level increases with better recruiting and the ability to attract better coaches/recruiters. All of a sudden, we have difference makes on the DL and we’re getting TOs and sacks on 3rd and long. Then when Smith decides to go for it on 4th and 2 from our own 42 early in 2nd half, we get the first down and JS is a genius. Even if we don’t get the first down, our defense holds. Next thing you know, in 2,3,4 years, the stars align and we’re in the Rose Bowl.
Anyhow, not sure we’ll get another win this year or not, but I’m glad JS recognized the moment and that gives me hope. Just wish he recognized the moment in OT when he should have went for 2.
Gotta get to the postseason and give players that extra month of practice. That’s step 1.
I think a couple of other coaches should have pretty warm seats as well. Hynson, Legi, and Adams should all feel a little heat IMO. The position coaches are responsible for deciding who plays and how often. I think the biggest head scratcher as far as personnel goes is WR. Flemings playing way too much, Beason still starting and playing a bunch after being terrible, the little Gould has played while producing every opportunity he gets, played Bolden last game who had a drop, the few opportunities that the big name transfers have gotten. I know that being highly rated doesn’t mean they’re necessarily good but Beason and champ haven’t really done much. At this point Lindsay, Bradford and Harrison should be the starters or maybe even Gould. DL has really been a disappointment since this staff has been here but you could definitely argue talent isn’t good there. How much of that falls on the position coach for recruiting. I know the coaches have areas that they recruit instead of just solely recruit their positions. Adams is still relatively new here and they looked improved at the beginning of the year but have really fallen off. They’ve had injuries there and Julian looked like the most improved. Robinson sounded like he was playing great before he was lost before the season started. Just seems like there are way too many blown coverages. How much does he get to decide if they play press or not? I would say he gets a pass this year because of injuries, being new, and Tibs defense.
Overall I think you need to let the new DC pick his staff if you expect him to make big improvements. Hopefully a shakeup on staff doesn’t cause them to lose a bunch of recruits. I wonder how the defensive recruits feel about Tibs firing. It would suck to lose some of the talent that they have coming in on that side as they look to be some future difference makers.
A few thoughts here. On the defensive side in regards to recruiting: yes, each coach has a designated area, but it is the HC and defensive coordinator that pick the type of player they are recruiting for the defense being ran. For instance; a 3-4 is going to have more LB recruits than a 4-3 or even a 5-2. So DL has not been an emphasis with Tibs defense, LB’s and DB’s has been the focus.
With regards to Champ, he made a critical catch last game to get a first down because he was lined up with I believe a LB. He’s faster than a LB. So really, it’s Chance finding the open receivers and Lindgren picking the right plays to call based on personnel packages they have dialed up. So for instance, Gould may not run the same routes as Beason does when he’s in the game. The rotation or packages for Harrison, Bradford, Gould, etc are designed for the group, not the individual. Also, I could be wrong, but I don’t think Lindgren wants Nolan to rely on certain receivers and never target or throw to others based on reliability. He won’t go through his progressions by having that mentality of locking onto a receiver.
As for position coaches deciding who plays and who doesn’t, that is worked out with the DC/OC respectively as well as the position coach and HC. I really feel Smith is so hands off in regards to personnel starting and playing to where he leaves it up to his assistants to make that determination. We had 1 coach fired/let go, we don’t need to start panic firing the whole crew when the person steering the ship was not steering the ship in the right direction. Start with getting defense prepared for the next 3 games then worry about what the next DC will and won’t do for assistants.
On the offensive side of the ball, I would be curious if Lindgren game plans differently the next 3 weeks knowing the mindset of the defense should be better and has different leadership. Wait and see. Can’t get any worse than it has at this point, right?
OT: Angry, my 17 year old has recently begun playing guitar and is looking for an acoustic that is solid but not extremely expensive. Any thoughts would be appreciated?
I really like the Art and Lutherie in that range. I have an old one of their parlor guitars, and it’s very nice for the money. I’m not sure if they still make them to such quality, so look into the reviews, but I think they’re a good lead. Eastman are also okay in that range. I’d avoid the Yamaha in that range. People always recommend them, but they’re very tinny sounding. Also, if they’re just starting out you might want to consider a smaller body guitar like an OM model over a dreadnought, too.
I’d second the Art & Lutherie guitars, they’re made in Canada by Godin of all domestic materials and they really are a step above anything else in their price range. I have one of their parlors also and a cherry dreadnought and they both play great.
I’d recommend looking into Ibanez Performance series. I have one with a matte finish on the soundboard that provides for a nice, full sound.
https://www.musiciansfriend.com/ibanez-performance-acoustic-guitars
If you could find a used one in good+ condition, you could save money if it turns out to be something he’s not really going to pursue longer term.
Thanks guys
Meant to point out the Ibanez is really pretty easy to play with the fret hand, which is encouraging for someone starting out.
The nut should always be brought down on cheap guitars. They’re always tough out of the box. Same with the saddle. A little sandpaper is all that’s needed to lower a nut the easy, cheating way (i.e. sand the bottom).
I had to sand the saddle on my A&L cherry. The parlor was good to go.
Went to check out Canzano’s reaction to Tisebar’s firing. He basically said it sends a clear signal that Smith expects more, and Tisebar had time to demonstrate what he could do.
He then suggested Smith give former Duck DC Nick Allioti a call and see if he’s available or at least get his advice.
Haha of course he would say that, he’s high on the ducks. I would call Nigel Burton, Dennis Erickson, or Mike Riley before calling Aliotti.
Never in regards to Allioti.
Allioti was the best part of the Belotti/early Chip years because you knew they would always be vulnerable on defense.
Check his column after the usc win. Tells you all you need to know.
Canzano = POS clickbait bitch
Ask him on Twitter how his ex wife is doing.
Some depressing PFF numbers nonsense:
-Nolan slips to #3 passer in the conference. Likely to head down further by the end of the year.
-Bradford solid at #2 WR
-Lowe and Baylor are the worst blocking tandem at RB in the country
-TQ #7 TE in the conference. Both he and Musgrave are back to respectable ratings. Utah has 3 TE’s in the top 6.
-Eldridge slips to #2 C in the conference as his pass blocking rating continues to plummet
-We have 3 G’s in the top 7 in conference. Levengood and Brewer are 3 and 4, but Brewer’s pass blocking rating is atrocious.
-Gray #3 T, Kipper #7. Pass blocking ratings continue to drop.
-Defense ratings are miserable
-We have no players in the top 10 at their position in the conference other than Julian and Oladapo
-Roberts is still the worst coverage LB in the conference
-Skelton/Rawls/Lolohea are solid at DT. Schad and Sandberg are less so.
-Hayes is #4 on kickoffs in the country. Not good on FG’s.
-Loecher is #7 punter in the country, top punter in conference.
Noyer still the second worst QB in the conference (just barely ahead of WSU’s QB4)
Ouch lol
How does Hughes-Murray do in coverage?
Average, which is better than Sharp and Saluni, who are both well below average.
Pickem games are up.
Bama vs New Mexico St has a 51.5 spread this week, so had to include it. With an o/u of 67.5.
13 games to pick but there is a setting only allowing you to pick 12 of em.
Sorry, i must have fat fingered an extra game. I just deleted the Clemson/Uconn game. Can you let me know if it’s acting normal now? Sometimes this CBS site is pretty unforgiving about mistakes and wont let me back out
All good now, thnx!
Those lines are so difficult. Wouldn’t be surprised if I go 0-12 this week!
Just wait till that borderline GA recruit Weston Eget takes over for the aggies.
Just a thought but maybe Barnes should reassign Tibesar to the soccer team. They aren’t allowed to tackle either.
Haaaaaaaaaaaaaa
I think you generally suck, but that was fuckin funny.
MBB opens tonight for real.
The goal is to make it back to the tourney. It’ll validate last season and continue to open doors on recruits/transfers. National pundits aren’t believers but the pac12 media is much higher on the beavs. The pac12 is going to be much stronger in the regular season than last year so the road will be tougher. But the beavs have the experience advantage vs tough opponents in win or go home situations.
My thought is that they’ll be on the bubble until the end. Hopefully won’t need a run in the pac12 tourney to make it again.
On to the players. The team will need to be 9 deep in the rotation. Not expecting marial at all.
Starting lineup –
C – Silva
F – Alitishe
F – Calloo
G – Lucas
G – Hunt
Off the bench
Davis
Andela
Williams
Rand
Johnson
Taylor
Akanno
Malone-Key
Cherry and Hobson are walk ons. If we see them it’s due to massive injuries or blowouts.
The team has the talent to get the job done. In the backcourt, Davis/Hunt are very capable of running the offense. Handles good enough to get up the court and beat any presses from opponents. Doesn’t matter to me who starts. In the front court, Alitishe and Silva should be able to put up better numbers, not from volume but by finishing at a higher clip. Silva might be able to stay in a bit longer this year.
Calloo and Lucas are the enigmas. Both are very capable of putting up a large amounts of points. But they need to do it at a better clip all year long. Or if one is off, the other needs to be on. The teams success will ride mostly on these two as the rest are fairly steady.
As for the rest of the bench, andela should keep up his job, rebounding machine and clean up around the basket. No need to get a jump shot. Williams looks to be the 4th guard. Hard to tell after andela how the forward rotation will go. Hope the competition produces a surprise breakout.
To make it back to the tourney this is what the beavs need to do,
1. No quad 4 losses.
2. Win road games
3. Win a couple quad 1 games.
4. Stay scrappy. Make opponents earn a win Last year the team rode the 3pt defense in the tourney. Need to keep that up. If a team beats the beavs they better shoot over 50 percent from deep on contested shots.
5. Good free throw shooting. It wins games! Need to shoot over 70 percent here.
The schedule is setup to come into conference play with only one or two losses. Then go .500 in the conference will likely get a team in.
This is the biggest year for Tinkle. Does he keep what worked last year? No suit, much more casual, letting the assistants do more.
All in all, the tourney seems very doable.
My expectation is that the Beavs make it back to the tourney and win in the round of 64. That would be a success.
I would even be okay if the team made it to the NIT.
Failure for me would be not getting into either tournament and not getting to the conference semi’s.
The one position I’ve seen the most recruiting activity for lately has been the DB group.
Beavs have been going after pretty much any transfer/JC DB who they can plug and play.
It appeara we have our foot in the door with a recent Alabama transfer, Marcus Banks, among several others. Just posting because he is the biggest name I’m seeing right now that we could have a shot with, but landing him wont be easy.
https://247sports.com/player/marcus-banks-46041877/
That would be awesome. Might be really hurting if Wright leaves. Wouldn’t mind seeing them grab a safety too.
Meanwhile in Nebraska, Frost takes a $8.5 Million paycut and fires 4 of his offensive coaches. It will literally be a dumpster fire by middle of 2022, if it isn’t already.
“That leads to the second big piece of the day, Frost parting ways with four men who he’s coached with for several years, at other places beyond Nebraska. There’s a relationship there, also a track record with Offensive coordinator/wide receivers Coach Matt Lubick, Offensive Line Coach/Run Game Coordinator Greg Austin, Running Backs Coach Ryan Held and Quarterbacks Coach Mario Verduzco. For the first time, he has had to cut professional ties with these men.”
https://www.wowt.com/2021/11/09/nugent-huskers-find-middle-ground-scott-frost-potentially-passes-85-million/
Nothing to see here, no panic. Business as usual.
Riley not looking so bad after all.
I thought he was the offensive genius. He should just coach all the offensive positions and hire more defensive coaches. He bet on the wrong horse with Martinez who has been a coach killer. Spectacular plays to tease and then always the critical turnover to lose the game. I wonder how it would have gone with Gebbia?
Matt lubick one of the coaches fired. If JS needs a change at wr coach, lubick would be a good option.
Wow, really throwing half his staff under the bus to keep his job.
“I hired the wrong fuckin guys”
I wonder how much of the restricting was buyout based.
Now that is a GA quote to remember!
So did BDC!
Say what you want about Barnes, he has done a decent job so far with coaching hires…now that price tag…
I’d like to see the Beavs use more up-tempo on offense, and not just after a big play.
Lol!
You really want the defense to be on the field MORE?
Stanford starting QB might be out for the game. Shaw has indicated that FR. Ari Patu will get the start should Tanner McKee be out.
Is he a freshman running QB? If so, place your bets early for PAC-12 POW.
Shaw said he’s between questionable and doubtful. Sounds like he needs to make a miraculous recovery in the next day or so to get enough practice in. Definitely gamesmanship to make the beavs prep for two QBs.
It’ll be Patus first start. He saw mop up action vs Utah completing one pass for minus three yards.
Ah here comes the Freshman in his first start dominating the Beavs. A tale as old as time!
Been thinking about the structure of coach contracts. They should really have games won based contracts over the buyout mess. If they don’t meet blah blah blah expectations then buyout doesn’t apply. If they do then they can leave without penalty.
It would lead to good coaches leaving but that’s better than getting stuck with a turd for years do to a buyout. If Anderson hadn’t wandered off drunkenly into an alley wouldn’t the last year of his contract been last year?
Wilner has Lake as 99% to be fired after season end.
Don’t think it is quite that high. Maybe 80%. He thinks they might go after Wilcox. Also mentions they could have some interest in Smith.
In scenario where Lake is fired and they hire Wilcox, I think OSU should take a looknat Lake for DC. He will have some damage and would be ideal spot to recoup as a DC within the Pac-12. Don’t see him in much demand as a HC in FBS if UW releases him. He’ll have to repair his image first.
We’ll see if Bray is impressive enough that we prefer him as DC, but new blood would not hurt OSU on the defensive side and Smith and Lake have worked together effectively before. Probably can be had for a reasonable amount due to his recent issues.
Think Gary Patterson will be hired as a HC somewhere but I think we could be effective as a DC and lend a higher profile. He’s getting older so if he wanted 4-5 years as a DC and then retiring it could work in theory.
Lake knows how to develop safeties and convert them to hybrid linebackers, which is what Patterson did at TCU. It would fill a need to develop the worst performing position on defense (OLB’s).
That’s the old Dennis Erickson model.
Convert big safeties into fast linebackers. Big linebackers into fast defensive ends.
Patterson will go to Bama as an “analysis” for a season and get a P5 job or go to a smaller school as HC.
Lake tho; might be very interesting. Say what you will about Anderson, but KS made the most of it by going to BYU. MAYBE a similar situation?
I’d try and press hard for Tosh Lupoi. The stink is off him at this point and he’s a great coach/recruiter.
Listening to sports radio in Seattle today, I can’t imagine Lake makes it through the end of this week. Cohen has been too quiet and I think she’s get everything in order to announce he’s been fired. I think it’s a done deal. Also don’t think there’s a chance Lake is our next DC.
High chance Bray ends up DC imo. Upward momentum and 3rd down stops it is his. Can’t wait to see all the blitzing this weekend. I’d be down for Lake though great DC Smith wanted him amd he said no.
Kelsen Hennessey has transferred out, opening a scholarship spot. These mid season ones always have me thinking they encouraged someone to leave so they can bring in a transfer. Wouldnt surprise me if we announce a new transfer in the next week(not based on any inside info, just observation)
If you had to put your money on a name who would you go with?
Just based on timing and past rumors, I’d go with Beason first. But my confidence is still pretty low with that one. I havent seen any of our coaches start following him since he announced his intent to transfer.
My other thought would be a transfer Center. We’ve been going after a few lately. This dude from Cornell could be one of our top transfer targets right now.
Hunter Nourzad
https://www.dailyadvent.com/news/3539529034c06d5ecc9919e0bfde2fdc-2022-NFL-Draft-Prospect-Interview-Hunter-Nourzad-OL-Cornell-University
If we are losing a Hennessy, Remy Martin would be the perfect dude to sign. Is LaVonte Courvoisier in the portal?
Very good, beavergopher!
Cornell center was merely an above average Ivy League C, according to PFF. Seems more like a Heneli Bloomfield type transfer than a Nathan Eldridge.
Soccer ranked #1. Pretty neat!
Fuck ya
Pick’em
Cal/USC game postponed till Dec 4.
Maybe Nice can find another 50 point spread game to substitute?
Thanks for the heads up. I’ve gone in and replaced Cal/USC with Clemson/UConn. Only a 40.5 pt spread on that one.
If you’ve already made picks, I’d recommend reviewing yiur games one more time
Watching MBB vs PSU. Alitishe definitely has the green light on offense this year. He’s been really active on both wnds of the floor and has all 11 Beaver pts on 5-7 shooting.
Rest of the team is showing really good energy on defense and pretty good movement on offense. Just need to settle it down a little on O and they should take over.
Good game so far.
Too many turnovers…..sloppy with the ball but altishe is definitely everything we saw last year.
Beaverd look sloppy vs PSU and with the exception of Altishe, having problems scoring. Going to miss Ethan this year.
1-6 at the line. Yikes
Those who said the exhibition game against Saint Martin’s meant nothing as far as those struggles were wrong. Did mean this team is not yet in very good shape to start the season. I’m expecting this game to come down to the last few minutes. Hope we pull it out. Would be a bad look to lose to PSU in home opener.
The energy is there and the defense has been really good, but the shooting outside of Alitishe is just terrible. Lots of throwing it up at the rim and hoping it will fall. Plus how many missed free throws? A missed 2 handed dunk, airballed 3.
Sortof expect the shooting to be off early on, hoping they can reign in their energy on offense a little and show more control. Should be dominating the scoreboard if they start hitting just the easy ones.
I disnt realize that lucas has been out for six weeks with a foot injury. I dont think Silva has taken a shot and their offense isnt going inside out
Alitishe is a man among boys, but the rest of the Beavs are running around like chickens with their heads cut off. Lucas finally made a basket. Can’t lose these games to lesser opponents. Viking hits a half-court shot at the buzzer. Good guys are down 4 at halftime.
They are not getting the ball inside to Silva where he has a size advantage. Gotta go inside out to loosen up the perimeter defense and get some open looks. There is no flow to the offense.
Yikes, shooting is even worse in the 2nd half.
Alitishe even airballed a free throw.
They are getting open shots but are just missing them badly.
This team cant shoot fts worth crap. Beyond Altishe, not sure where points come from as offense is anemic.
Looks like a pickup game with lots of sloppy play. Beavers just cant put the ball in the hoop. This team looks like a work in progress…..
This is ugly.
Yep, but beavs defense is tough and creating opps for the offense.
It is now not as ugly. But holy F*ck can we make a FT
Did they win?
Yes, 73-64 final
Sweet
Beavs up 50-47 with 9min left. Rand has been money on defense
Looks a lot like early last season, sloppy play. However, we have more talent and athleticism this season. We are in good shape (not physically that’s obvious lol)
Agreed.
Down the stretch, looks like Lucas getting hot with the 3’s set the tone for the rest of the team to start getting into a rhythm. They had a 12-0 run at one point to get the lead. 68-62 Beavs with 1:20 left in the game.
Welp, beavs played much better in second half and win it 73-64.
This team is deep. Gonna be very strong on D… with consistent offense and cleaner play we are gonna be a tough matchup for most teams.
Ahmed Rand was a defensive beast in just 6 minutes had 3 blocks and has had only one practice.
We don’t have a lot of guys I would consider ball handlers, similar to last years team, and we will have a lot of turnovers against good pressure teams.
But we will also force a lot of turnovers with our D.
I think Hunt and Davis have potential but I agree that slows down the offense. However, with this team we just need to make easy post passes and let our inside guys do work.
Hunt still makes me nervous every time he has the ball. I thought Davis got more and more comfortable as the game progressed.
I agree, Davis looks like a good get. Hunt just needs to slow down a step, he’s got a quick first step but out of control many times.
This team will substantially improve over the next four games. They are ferocious on defense.
They were sloppy but they played hard all game and Tinkle is going to have lots of options with this team.
They will probably lose games that they shouldn’t because they can’t generate enough offense. I would be shocked if they didn’t. They need to find a lot more offense from the transfer guys.
But this looks like a 20+ win team.
Calloo had a nice game also. He hit some key buckets in the second half and is money at the foul line. I think he had eight boards.
Yes, he looked good. Silva was invisible, however.
Hope Lucas coming down awkwardly in those last few seconds wasnt anything to be concerned with. Almost looked like he aggravated an injury or something. Kept grabbing his lower leg.
It was sloppy on offense like early sesson games often are, but this team has alot of potential. Being able to run 10 different guys out there without any drop off in energy amd intensity will help them wear down teams sortof how they did against PSU tonight. Gotta work on FTs and just overall offensive sets vs 1on1 play. Also were fortunate PSU missed the front end of pretty much every 1 and 1 they had, basically turning those possessions into turnovers.
Need to get Silva more involved down low. He was pretty much a non-factor tonight aside from a some decent interior defense.
Saw Cal and UW both lost as big favorites, and Colorado needed OT to get a W. So glad OSU got the win and move on to next week.
Did we know that Lucas had been recovering from a stress fracture for two months? I hope it wasn’t some type of reinjury.
Tonight was the first I’d heard of it
Beavs missed several freethrows too so both teams missed some easy points. Lucas had been on the shelf for six weeks with a foot injury so it will take some time to get into game shape. Silva looked out of sorts and so wasnt a factor. In Cali game, cali was without 4 players…
Good win. PSU was clearly hungry for an upset. Defense is what carries you in March. And ours already looks fantastic. Davis is a menace. Hunt is an all around fantastic defender. Rand is a catalyst and Alatishe is still Alatishe plus an improved offensive game. I am surprised we didn’t see Taylor tonight tonight. Sounds like he had a big impact in the exhibition. And I know Tinkle is high on him. Hopefully Tinkle can find ways to spread the love appropriately.
Is Malone-Key injured or just can’t crack the rotation? He was a decent scorer (double-digits) at his previous mid-major school.
Think he had an injury to start camp but I’m with you we could use another guard who can handle score and distribute some. That’s going to be the key to this years squad to get Lucas and Calloo some easier looks since neither guy is really adept at creating off the bounce. Davis Hunt and Hopefully Malone – Key can thrive in that roll to get shooters and guys like Warrith and Rand easier looks from the dunker spot.
He must not be 100 percent. He didn’t play in the exhibition either which makes me think he is definitely hurt.
He played 3min in the exhibition but that doesn’t mean anything.
Edit: his pinned tweet from November 5th
“crazy i was just laying in a hospital bed 6 weeks ago with so much uncertainty. God is Great”.
That was a bad game and they still won. They could have folded when PSU took the 11 point lead in the second half.
Of the returnees –
Alitshe showed what he can be. Deserving of the 1st team PAC12 preseason recognition.
Calloo and Lucas were slow out of the gate but showed that they can bounce back within a game.
Hunt showed off his handle but just didn’t take good shots.
Silva and Andela couldn’t get much going offensively and Tinkle was smart to hold them on the bench in the second half.
Johnson made some nice hustle plays
Of the new guys,
There were some clear issues on meshing with the new guys early on. But that should sort it self out in the next few games.
Davis is a good player. But he’ll need to adjust his game to meet the challenges of this level. His turnovers were on passes that may have worked in JC but players in D1 are just better. Shot selection needed to be better. Might get the starting nod over Hunt by the start of conference play. Good defense.
Williams played about the right amount, 11 minutes. If gets hot, play him more and if he gets cold, take him out quickly.
Ahmad Rand looks to be a spark plug off the bench. Andela and he will battle for minutes.
Akanno will battle for minutes with Williams and the only thing holding him back is himself.
Overall a win is a win. Plenty of things to clean up. Shot selection, reduce turnovers and make some free throws!!
I’ll take offense clean up all day over defensive clean up.
This^^^^
Anyone see the Texas DL coach comment to his players after the loss to Iowa State? Haha not sure how the players would respond to that at Oregon State.
https://www.heartlandcollegesports.com/2021/11/09/texas-defensive-line-coach-bo-davis-to-team-some-of-you-motherfkers-need-to-get-in-the-transfer-portal/
Haha that’s funny.
It takes a strong willed coach to manage those blue blood programs with rosters full of prima donnas. Ol Cutty Sark and his band of miscreants ain’t it.
New thread up.
That’s the kind of stat line we need from Calloo to have a good season. Glad to see Davis contributing across the line, too (5 reb, 4 ast, 2 stl). Hunt is a disappointment with 3 points in 28 minutes. Looks like we went small with Silva/Andela only combining for 23 minutes?
This is the kind of team we expected to have. We’re not putting up 85 points every night with this roster. WT has built the team to play suffocating D and the offense is going to be hit and miss. D and rebounding gets a lot of teams into the tourney every year.
All in all, we just need to avoid bad losses and we did that. Mission accomplished. #25 UVA lost to Navy. Cal lost to UC San Diego and UW lost to Northern Illinois. We’re in a better position than many.
It wasnt a very good matchup for Silva/Andela because PSU was small but quick. Silva played good interior defense early, but picked up 2 fouls and sat the rest of the half. Then he came back in and picked up foul #3 almost immediatly and had to sit again. Dont think he came back after that.
Andela was almost invisible last night. I barely remember seeing him play.
We’ll need those guys against the bigger teams we face, but against PSU it made sense to go with a smaller lineup
