Here’s the yearly back and forth with Hank at GoMightyCard. My answers to his questions will be up at his website shortly.
1. When Mike Bloomgren left, quarterback coach Tavita Pritchard was elevated to offensive coordinator. There didn’t seem to be much of an external search, and most observers were a bit disappointed, thinking that Pritchard didn’t seem to have the résumé to warrant the promotion. We can never really know what’s going on in the coaching offices, but the speculation is that Pritchard is a figure head and that David Shaw is actually in charge of the offense. Shaw has said in the past that he leaves to the play calling to his coordinator, but that he takes over in the red zone. There has never been a public delineation of how the work is divided, but it’s been a huge source of contention in the fanbase. The other area in which Bloomgren is missed is the offensive line. He was in charge of that unit from 2011 to 2017, a stretch of time when Stanford football was defined by offensive line success. Since his departure… that hasn’t been the case. Stanford is currently dead last in the conference in rushing offense, something that would’ve been unthinkable five years ago.
2. No one, it seems, is lukewarm on Shaw. Discontent has been building for two or three years, and what once were whispers are now full-throated roars. What’s interesting is that many of your complaints about Jonathan Smith, specifically the aversion to risk on 4th down, are things we hear about Shaw. (It’s my guess that not even Smith is willing to punt from inside his opponent’s 30; Shaw is.) People are tired of Shaw’s conservative nature, and there’s a growing belief that he hasn’t done a good job managing his coaching staff. The mark of a good program is that coaches are routinely hired away by teams looking to replicate that program’s success. (Look at how Alabama cycles through coordinators.) While it might be difficult to replace quality coaches, the upside to that carousel is that new ideas come into the program. None of that has happened at Stanford in quite some time, and some fans are wondering if the current swoon might be because this staff, from to top bottom, isn’t properly preparing these players for success. There has been some inconsistent recruiting, but there is far too much talent on the offense for them to be performing as they have been. (In fairness, the offense is currently decimated by injuries, but that wasn’t true earlier in the season.) Just as many Oregon State fans were pleasantly surprised to see Smith firing a coordinator this week, many Stanford fans would be thrilled to see Shaw clean house a bit this off season. The next time he fires someone from his staff, however, will be his first. So we’ll see.
But to get back to your original question, Shaw is in no danger. Zero. I’d like to see him make some changes, but I’d also like him to be the head coach for the next twenty years.
3. Saturday’s loss to Utah was awful, certainly the worst of Shaw’s career. If you’re an optimist, you can convince yourself that this was a young Stanford team missing its starting quarterback and top three wide receivers. You’ll remind yourself that the team is incredibly young, particularly the offense. You’ll tell yourself that things will be better next year. But if you’re a pessimist — and there are LOTS of pessimistic Stanford fans right now — you’re convinced that the last ten years were a fluke and that Stanford football will never see the top half of the conference again. I’m an optimist. I’m not sure we’ll see another four-year stretch with three Rose Bowl appearances, but I still have faith in Davis Shaw, and I still believe things will be better next year.
4. The three best Stanford players this year have been quarterback Tanner McKee, tight end Ben Yurosek, and cornerback Kyu Blu Kelly. The problem for the Cardinal is that two of those three (McKee and Kelly) likely won’t play on Saturday. Kelly is definitely out, and McKee has been described as somewhere between doubtful and questionable. Given Shaw’s conservative approach to discussing player injuries, that means there’s about a 1% chance that McKee plays. In perhaps the most stunning personnel decision of his eleven years, Shaw announced that true freshman Ari Patu would start this Saturday if McKee is unable to go, a surprising acknowledgement of backup Jack West’s struggles against Utah. If Patu knows what’s good for him, he’ll be looking for Yurosek, who’s developing into Stanford’s next great tight end. Yurosek is a difficult cover for a linebacker, and if the Stanford offense is to have any chance at all of being effective, he’ll have to be heavily involved in the game plan. Aside from Yurosek, I don’t see any matchup advantages for Stanford on either side of the ball.
5. Given the recent struggles of the defense and the fact that a true freshman will be starting at quarterback, I just can’t imagine the Cardinal winning this one. I obviously hope I’m wrong, but this feel like a 27-10 Oregon State win.
What are the questions?
From answer #2, I think he misunderstands Jonathan Smith. JS doesn’t have an “aversion” to risk, he has an addiction to it!
Yes I think he misunderstood my comments about Smith. Next time I’ll just say “he’s a degenerate gambler” because that kind of bluntness is hard to mistake.
We have to understand that JS was coaching under Chris Peterson, gambling plays but better players
Stanford will have no trouble scoring even if they decide to run on every play. That what I’m expecting. Tree 31 Beavs 28.
“Yurosek is a difficult cover for a linebacker.”
So we’re screwed unless Bray can fix Timmy’s mistakes quickly.
6-5 MacCartan would probably be the best matchup if he was healthy, but we may have to rely on Grant or Hughes-Murray. Might be a game similar to the USC one where one guy has a career day, but that’s their only viable option.
A view of the weekend’s MBB opponent from their local paper:
“It was, at times, an understandably sloppy performance from a team with seven newcomers and a true freshman point guard, but there were also bursts of strong play to suggest this team will be capable of achieving program milestones beyond the stopping 18-game losing streak from last season that finally came to an end in Otzelberger’s debut.
The evening’s positives include Iowa State unquestionably getting stronger as the night went on, evidence that freshman Tyrese Hunter is up to the job at point and that Iowa State has some scoring punch on the wing.
On the other side of the ledger, though, the Cyclones were plagued by turnovers, Hunter was waylaid by fouls in both halves and the 3-point shooting was inconsistent.”
22 turnovers at home against Kennesaw State. Our defense should be smelling blood.
Yeah, “Freshman point guard” should have them smelling blood as well. This is also an Iowa State team that snapped an 18 game losing streak. So they are definitely in full rebuild mode. That being said, road games are always tough, but lucky for us defense always travels.
I may try to drive down. Forgot they were playing in Ames
BTW, I didn’t catch basketball last night. Our starting 5 seems okay. I don’t know many of the bench guys…any of them stand out?
Sounds like Rand’s D and energy stood out (though in only 6 minutes). Davis played a ton and filled the stat line, but shooting % was poor and it sounds like he’s still adjusting to D1 game speed.
The team has more depth this year. But tinkle will need to be careful not to overextend minutes to guys who are good in bursts. But each guy showed potential to be pretty good. Tinkle mentioned his rotation will be 7-8 guys but it seems like he can go to 9.
Davis has the most potential. Ability to run the offense while able to score at a decent rate. Good fit on defense. He may be the answer in the search for a true point guard.
I’ll say tinkle stood out in his coaching. When Silva and andela were struggling on offense, he pulled them quickly and kept them on the bench. Also the defense played well, got better throughout the game.
One thing that will be different this year is that the beavs can run different matchups that opponents will have to adjust to. When they have size advantage they can go with Silva and when they want to go smaller, they still have Rand as a rim protector. Nice change to be able to dictate matchups.
As the play by play guy mentioned more than once last night, we didnt get to see heralded recruit, Glen Taylor Jr. If this kid can knock down the three and be productive, that would give the beavs another weapon. No one seemed to iknow why no PT so no explanation given last night as far as i know.
He’ll get time in a game where they are winning comfortably. Wasn’t a great time for him to make his first appearance.
Davis is a guy that contributes in all phases and is a menace on D. He will see a lot of playing time. Tre Williams seems to have a good veteran presence. Overall, Oregon State has done a tremendous job bringing in guys that take pride in their defense and give maximum effort. We are going to force a lot of turnovers this year. Even Lucas had 3 swipes yesterday. It is good to see the team already leaning on what got them to the Elite 8 last year and that is consistent defense and deploying guys that create problems for teams on the defensive end of the basketball. I think we have yet to see one of their best newcomers in Glenn Taylor Jr. Shocked he didn’t see playing time. He is super talented and a lot of what I have read says he can guard multiple positions on D. I see Rand becoming what Kylor Kelley was his Junior year. 15 or so minutes of just swatting the hell out of people and having thunderous dunks to swing the momentum. I would not be surprised to see Rand at some point this year have a 10 block double double. I think what I like about Williams and Akanno is they look like role/spot players that can provide us with an occasional spark offensively which is what we need from them. But the best part of last night is the veterans in Calloo, Alatishe and Lucas all looked like they decided to carry on what they were doing at the end of last year.
We’re no longer relying on Zach Reichle to defend a position for 30 plus minutes. His occasional hot shooting may be missed, but it really shows on the defensive end. Guys are selling out, diving for loose balls, quick hands creating steals, quick traps, lots of blocked shots. The defense is fun to watch. And there really isn’t a drop off when we go to the bench on that end.
The offense needs to improve. They can get open shots, but we dont have anybody who you would consider a dangerous shooter outside of Lucas/Calloo in spurts, and then Alitishe looked very solid offensively(even hit a 3)
Lots of putting the ball up around the rim without much control, hoping it would fall in.
On the plus side, the offense did improve in the 2nd half as guys settled down a little.
Free throw shooting was terrible. Hopefully that is fixable though. I think the players had so much adrenaline running through their veins they couldnt relax to make shots. I think it was Davis who missed 2 straight, but got an extra attempt on a lane violation, and missed the 3rd attempt too.
And Alitishe missed a several. On one trip, his first ft missed and the 2nd one air balled. On tv you could hear a fan in the background groan “Oh my God…”
It’s an entertaining team to watch, you should tune into the next game
So this just tells me that the Beavs will spend all week game planning on the QB that has “a 1% chance of playing” and NOT focus on this Patu guy (which I admittedly, know nothing about, but wouldn’t be recruited to Stanford if he weren’t any good). However, if last year’s WSU game is any indication, where de Laura came in as the freshman QB and ran us up and down the field, Patu will probably have a PAC-12 player of the week sort of day.
I hate to be so negative, but it is what it is – the last two games have beat the winning out of this team and I don’t know where it gets back on track.
The strategy should be to keep their QB in the pocket and not allow him to escape.
That was the strategy against Colorado, too. Hmmm….
Yeah, and as far as Stanford’s O-Line, nothing is bound to get them more healthy than a game against the Beavs.
The strategy against Colorado was to keep him in the pocket and not blitz.
So we keep him in the pocket and release the hounds.
In the words od Al Davis… ” Just Win Baby “
In the words of a college football fan:
“Just win, don’t suck”
In the words of a Beaver football fan:
“Is it baseball season yet?”
Just blitz like crazy and spy with speights or colletto
Also, don’t send the DE’s way up field when rushing the passer.
Signing day today for most sports.
Baseball should sign a good class, just depends on who gets here.
Gavin Turley is the star of the class. Tremendous power. Potential first round pick. It’ll depend on how much money he asks for. Maybe they show him that he can win a title here and still be drafted in the first round.
Home run derby footage. Didn’t hit a ton out but very good for a high school player on an MLB field.
https://youtu.be/RSaFcCdMKb0
We’ve got several stars in this class. Reed was thought to be a guaranteed first rounder until an injury last year. Guerra was the top player in OR and considered a potential first 5 rounds draft pick. Then there’s the WA POY who put up insane numbers his senior year (his name escapes me).
Nice to have state POY’s from WA, OR, and NM in one class. Canham’s staff has been killing it on the recruiting trail.
It’s the 2023 class signing today. Reed and the others are the 2022 class and on campus already.
Former Beav Corey Benjamin’s daughter just unloads on a girl during a basketball game. Can’t tell what was said that lead up to this, but it seemed to be a reaction to Benjamin taking out the girls legs with an exaggerated flail. Apparently the mom was heard telling her daughter to “go ahead and hit her”.

Gotta love the hustle on offense leading up to that shot
That should involve law enforcement. Assault with intent to do harm.
Yup. Watched the video. Absolute thug behavior. Should be charged with assault and not allowed to play again this season.
I just watched it. It kind of reminded when Kermit Washington blindsided Rudy Tomjanavich back in the day…Both attacks wete just brutal anf if i was the player’s parent, i would pursue assault charges. She she should be kicked off the team and suspended from school.. That was a disgusting and unprovoked attack on a defenseless player.
I feel terrible for the girl that got hit, that’s a cheap shot from a girl who is at least a 150 lbs heavier. I also feel bad for the girl who threw the punch. Her parents are failing her and setting her up for a hard life. That’s learned behavior right there.
UW is apparently working on a buyout for Jimmy Lake(according to a former Husky player on KJR today)
https://twitter.com/JasonPuckett20/status/1458485087519924225?s=20
Yikes.
It would be great if he ended up as the new OSU DC. Dude is legit in that regard.
The real question is who the hell is UW going to hire as HC in the off season?
Wow, didn’t see that coming – but when your fan base’s expectations are a Rose Bowl or National Championship – every year – and you find out your not as good a team as the pundits thought, somebody is going to pay the price. Nobody will ever be the next ‘Don James’ these guys are looking for; Chris Peterson was close, but even he felt the pressure.
Let the turmoil begin!
There’s already turmoil. Things could definitely get worse, but Lake has been a blessing.
The rich kids are probably the least patient fan base in the conference. If he was winning they wouldn’t care but the shove is all the excuse they needed. The only fan base with more sway is USC.
If Lake did come to Corvallis as DC, would there be any current players who would transfer to Oregon State on the defensive side to play for him?
I’m not going to dig into rosters till we hear there is actually a chance of something happening in that regard.
I did look at Lakes contract. He has 3 years and about $10M left on his deal. I wouldnt mind getting him in here as a Defensive position coach for a few years on a low deal while UW has to continue paying him the next 3 years. Let him focus on coaching, rehab his image and move on when he’s ready.
Lake isn’t coming to Corvallis. Everyone needs to chill.
It’s way more likely he’ll go to a bigger program that loses their DC like Oklahoma. There’s no way we could ever afford to pay him. The only reason he would come is if he’s BFF’s with JS, but I’ve never read any evidence to support that.
We don’t accept those kind of pragmatic explanations on this forum
Yup. I would bet he’s going to SEC, Big ten or Big 12. He will get paid 600k+ as a DC and get another head coaching gig in the next 5 years.
Don’t these coaches all end up at Alabama so they can ‘rehab’ their image?
Right. Where behavior doesn’t matter. Rehab, move on to next big contract.
Watching the Frogger show with my kids and one of the contestants is a former OSU athlete. I looked her up online and it turns out she’s Seth Collins’s sister. Guess what sport she did at OSU?
Hurdles!
Disney missed earnings today. Always glad to see that from the company that ruined sports. ESPN+, unfortunately, saw an uptick. Not sure on regular ESPN viewership…their CEO has zero inner child in him, so a very odd pick to run Disney.
They also said in their earnings call they’re going to get more aggressive about connections to the gambling industry. Gross.
I saw that. Totally repulsive. And that CEO was giddy about the gambling…
Soon they’ll be dabbling in the porn industry with Disney character crossovers

Hearing conforto to Mariners has a high probability. That would be great.
Yes sir! And maybe Marcus Semien too! Heck we might even sign Seiya Suzuki. Give me a top tier starter, infielder, and out fielder. The sign a bunch of down year relievers for cheap and we are set. It’s gonna be a fun offseason for Mariners fans.
You want a .250 hitter with 150 strikeouts? Mets fan all my life, not sorry to see Conforto go, unrealized potential. Maybe he finds it with a new team.
Mariners? That’s where good players go to end up in obscurity….
If Lake does ultimately get fired, JS has to be the first to call Lake. Even if they don’t have a great relationship, even if Lake wants to see what better offers are out there, JS has to be first in case he says yes.
Agree. Lake would be a great hire as DC. Not sure if it’s gonna happen. Depends on trust/respect more than friendship/strength of relationship. Also it may depend on what JS thinks of Bray. If he thinks Bray is an up and coming superstar DC he may want to go that route before he loses him.
Smith tried to hire lake in the beginning, but uw gave him a raise
Eubanks with 18 and 6 in 24 minutes. 4-5 field goals, 10-13 from the line.
I could care less if we get Lake. I think he lands in a bigger program.I am interested in how Bray does and am hoping he is aggresive. JS will not consider him if he looks to be in over his head and there are good coaches out there wanting to get to a power 5 school.
The next 3 and possibly 4 games will be Bray’s opportunity to prove he can do the job and deserves it. Win the next 2 of 3 and show improvement, i think he lands the job. If not, i think smith opens it up. There is a big upside to promoting Bray….if you doubt the most obvious, read the recent article about Melvin Jordan and his commitment to the beavs despite the change. I guess the first evaluation flashpoint is Stanford. In fact, bray might secure the job if they look good and beat Stanford.
Stanford isn’t exactly some elite offense that nobody has shut down this season. It should take more than one game.
That is why I indicated he might secure the job with a win over Stanford. I sgree that it depends on the final 3 but i dont think they have to win out but just show some solid improvement.
Smith has always talked about continuity within the coaching staff and retention. I really want Bray to succeed and get the job. Tibesar was the LB coach at Wisconsin before Smith hired him as a DC. So Smith may think Bray is up and coming, but needed a few years to earn players trust to them be promoted. This is Bray’s job to ‘lose’. It will take a couple recruiting classes to get the right DE/DL, LB, DB’s to hopefully go to a 4-3. I don’t think the 3-4 works in this conference as a base defense. DE need to be more like a LB than an interior DL IMO. Bringing in a new coach as DC would be a learning curve in regards to recognizing the strength and weaknesses of this current team. Bringing in a new LB coach though who is a strong recruiter like Bray would be more ideal. Legi’s resume doesn’t impress me a whole lot. Oregon State is his first power 5 team. Before that was Hawaii as defensive coordinator and before that he was their DL coach. Before that he was in the FCS ranks. If we had more of an in with the Polynesian players/recruits for OL/DL, that would be a good thing too.
Has anyone noticed Lakes run D? Once he loses access to the elite level DBs UW has/gets I’m not so sure his D is going to be that great. He might be worth taking a risk on but not sure he’s any sort of a lock to be great at OSU.
Lake as a position coach would be great, but I don’t see him taking any position below D coordinator.
Will be interesting to see how the D performs the next 3 games (and hopefully a bowl) under Bray. I think it’s a situation where Smith wants Bray to succeed, but Bray is going to have to show he is the right person for the job.
Also, thoughts on WSU interim HC/defensive coordinator? Should we try going after him? The turnover rate seems impressive, and he is t exactly workin go with a bunch of All-Americans over there.
Very good call. I have been impressed with wsu defense this year. They’re slightly undersized but they sure seem to be playing fast and aggressive style of defense. Which causes turnovers and puts pressure on the offense
He seems like a head case. Pass.
Can you elaborate? Not challenging you, I just don’t know much about him outside of a high-level overview of his defensive style.
I don’t know much about him, either, which is why I used “seems”, but Smith didn’t get along with him at Washington, he hit a player, and he made those ridiculous comments about Oregon’s academics. That’s enough for me to want nothing to do with that guy. But then he punted to Oregon on 4th and 10 with 1:59 on the clock, showing that his decision making is even worse than Smith’s!
Oh I got you. I thought you were referring to Dickert at WSU.
Just read from Wilner that WSU’s D has forced 20 turnovers this year, most in the conference. If I’m Niner, I would take a hard look at him for DC if WSU doesn’t retain him as HC.
– familiar with P12 opponents
– emphasis on speed and creating turnovers for the offense
– seems to scheme based on the types of players he has available (I.e. not a bunch of 4* recruits)
“Smitty and I are very close,” Lake said. “He knows what I like. I know what he likes. It is definitely a fun competition and I’m expecting he’s going to have an extraordinary plan against us.”
From lakes pregame presser, doesn’t sound like any animosity remains if there was any.
I’ll give the guy a pass on the Oregon insults!
He’s right, but it’s still classless for a coach to say that and shows problems.
… they lost to Montana, at home. with superior talent.
Hard pass.
But the defense played well!
Perfect Game ranks our ’22 baseball class #27 in the country. Nike is the only PAC-12 team ranked higher (#24).
I thought i recently read where the beavs recruiting was ranked in the top ten, #6 i thought?
That was the previous class
Some comments from Bray in the GT this morning:
“Bray said the evident on-field deficiency in recent weeks defensively was physicality when trying to stop the run.
“That’s where it starts. Then we have to get off the field on third down,” Bray said. “And it goes back to my job, owning my role and making sure I take care of my responsibility on the field so we can get off the field.”
Oregon State is sixth in the Pac-12 against the run at 143.7 yards a game and sixth at 4.17 yards per attempt. The Beavers are 11th in pass defense (262.0 yards) and 10th in total defense (405.7).
OSU allows opponents to convert 50.7% of third downs and has been last in the conference in that category most of the season.”
At least Bray’s saying the right things. Tibesar spoke in an interview about how they were doing well in 3rd and short and 3rd and really long, his only concern about 3rd downs was 3rd and intermediate, 8-12 yards. And strangely he is gone. Hoping that increased physicality comes to play Saturday, I’d like to see if he is able to make half time adjustments as well, unfortunately I won’t get to the game until half time.
No mention of the anemic pass rush. Maybe he’s just trying to not call Tibesar out publicly for the poor performance of his position group?
We’re getting blown off the line on run plays and not shoring up gaps. Not going to win many games when first contact is made 4 yards past the LOS. Have to fix that first.
The defense has been bad in most areas. It’s just odd to see him only call out physicality in stopping the run.
He says it starts with that. I read that as there are other things he recognizes needs to change. Maybe his relationship with smith will allow them to be more candid.
Geez, no wonder the other team feels pretty confident when they have a 3rd and 15 – it’s like “hey, we have these guys right where we want them”!
They’re right
OT: Also in the GT, Rueck continues to deliver…
“The Oregon State women’s basketball program officially welcomed its highest-rated class of recruits on Wednesday.
Timea Gardiner, Raegan Beers, Adlee Blacklock and Lily Hansford signed their National Letters of Intent on the opening day of the signing period. ESPN rates Oregon State’s 2022 recruiting class as No. 3 in the country, trailing only Pac-12 rivals Oregon and UCLA.’
Apparently you can recruit to OSU/Corvallis, if you try.
If only we had an airport we would be #1…
I think recruiting in women’s basketball is just a little different than football. Having a successful program also helps some.
If you build it, they will come..
Rumors have Justin Wilcox and Tom Hermann in the mix for UW. Wilcox would be great, Hermann would be scary.
I’d love to think Hermann will get a better offer, but I can’t think of a job more in his wheelhouse that will be open. Maybe Michigan State or Penn State?
Wilcox would be smart to jump on that if they offer. Cal is a losing proposition.
Interesting interview.
He doesn’t seem super stoked about the change and clearly doesn’t want to get into any of the details of the internal dynamics (makes sense). It frustrates me a bit that the overall narrative is all about “energy” and “juice”, but it’s what you expect coming from a player going through a mid-season coaching change.
There were so many tangible things under Tibs that were just so so bad for so long and obvious to even casual fans. Puzzling scheme and play-call choices, atrocious game-planning and adjustments, poor fundamentals (tackling/coverage). Getting them emotionally engaged and playing hard again is great and it’s always where the focus is and what is talked about during a mid-season coaching change, but it’s hard to gauge if any of those tangible things are being accounted for or if there has been any shift in focus on those things under Bray (I get it’s only been a few days).
It makes me wonder if there was significant internal emotional conflict and cliques forming (drama) between coaches/players around Tibs.
Yeah, meaningless buzzwords like “juice” harken back to phrases like GA would use. Either Tibs could not come up with a competent game plan and effective in game adjustments or the players weren’t executing on them. The next three games should tell some of the story.
I didn’t get the sense that he was disappointed in the change necessarily. Seems like he has a good personal relationship with Tibs which is different from a coaching relationship. Seems to me he didn’t want to compare Tibs to Bray on a coaching level and I don’t blame him because he likes Tibs. If he goes out and spews all of Tibs shortcomings then it might affect their personal connection.
Tibs was Hughes-Murray’s position coach, so I can understand some of the frustration.
Hank put up my responses:
https://www.gomightycard.com/2021/11/blogging-with-the-enemy-oregon-state-beavers.html
I like how he asked about our coaching change potentially affecting the game and you answered about Smith’s 3rd and 4th down decisions… which is not at all what he asked lol
He forgot to mention that Nolan is a four star
Watching Pittsburgh game. Smart, delayed blitz’s. They also use their TE for passing plays. Just brilliant.
I couldn’t tell if Timmy’s blitz’s were delayed, or just slowwwwww…
I was watching a UCLA game and their blitzes came so much harder and faster. When the RB would pick them up they were running into him full speed and blowing him back. They need to get these guys some more motivation or something to get sacks.
Watching the soccer game tonight and we’re leading #3 UW.
This goal is absolutely sick. 45th of his OSU career.

So PAC 12 champs?
Yes, champs.
Go Beavs!
Must br a dick fan with down votes. Seriously, why would any one down vote that.
Because soccer sucks and no one cares???
Time for bed, grandpa
Guess you’re no one?
Yet, you cared enough to leave a comment. Derp.
Looks like i was right about the downvotes beimg a dick fan.
You like the down votes!
So three P12 teams lose to small conference teams on opening night. Our PSU win is looking pretty good!

PHIL STEELE REPORT:
Oregon St has dropped 11 straight to Stanford (3-7-1 ATS) including the L/6 at home (1-4-1 ATS). Stanford was dominated by Kansas St in the opener but then upset USC and got coach Helton fired. They lost to UCLA at home but upset Oregon. That was followed by 3 losses both SU and ATS to Ariz St, Wash St and Washington. Last week they were missing QB McKee at home vs Utah and were outgained 440-28 in 1H as the Utes led 38-0 in 52- 7. Stanford allowed 441 rush yds, the most ever in 11 years under Shaw. Oregon St has had a good year, opened 5-3 with upsets of USC, Washington and Utah. Last week Colorado had 144 yds in 1Q and led 10-0 but in 2Q had 50 yds offense and 40 yds in pen’s. CU miss 35 yd FG but led 13-10 H. OSU SOD own 41 and CU 41/6 TD 20-10. 24 2:24. OSU miss 51 yd FG :32 left but all 3 TO and Gould 26 yd PR and 9 yd rec. Hayes 60 yd FG for OT at 27-27. Hayes miss 38 yd FG in 2nd OT and Buffs won 37-34. This one could be high scoring as Oregon St has allowed 358 ypg passing to the 4 top QB’s they faced. Stanford has struggled to stop the run all year allowing 306 (5.1) and take on a powerful OSU rush attack that is averaging 253 (5.8) at home, led by BJ Baylor (872, 6.7). Stanford has taken on the tougher schedule (#3 vs #52). This is a classic Green/Red matchup with the Beavers all Green (on Phil Steele Plus) rush offense vs the Stanford all Red rush defense. Oregon ST is +36 ypg and Stanford is -100 ypg (-156 ypg L4W). Oregon St is 5-1 ATS as a HF and Stanford 4-9 ATS as an AD and the Beavers need to win here to clinch a bowl with Ariz St and Oregon on deck.

So, we’re doomed. The Phil Steele kiss if death
The way I read Steele here, with his report, Stanford appears to, statistically, have the edge offensively and defensively in a majority of the categories presented, yet he picks the Beavs to win? Even the Vegas odds makers are in on it, too. Am I missing something here? This isn’t funny anymore. He picked the Beavs to win at Cal and Colorado, too, I think. He must be doing this to set us up for expectations that never materialize!
He forgot “the Smith factor.” -7
Makes it a pick ’em.
But on the other hand, Steele will pick U of W to win – no matter what!
I have a JUCO CB who I have a gut bomb for, but won’t be able to drop a name till Monday. At that point I’ll post that he is coming on an official for the ASU game. I’ve been asked to hold off a couple of days.
I don’t think he is juco but anything on karon Prunty?
Havent heard anything on him. Cant imagine he has much eligibility left, but havent checked. I’d think we’d mostly want guys with 2 or more years left, unless theyre a cant miss talent
Can you share your personal thoughts on if this is a good pick up or not? Only asking, as it seems like the coaching staff has been throwing a ton of offers out there for DB’s…
Stop doing stupid crap and just freaking win. I don’t care if it’s by 1 or 21 points but just freaking beat a bad Stanford team!
Your 2021 men’s pac12 soccer champs and #1 ranked OSU beavers. Congrats and now go get a national title for yourselves and Beaver Nation.
Anyone know our uni colors tomorrow?
I hope it’s the all black “Black Bandits of Benton County” outfit – haven’t seen that one in awhile.
Looks like all black

MBB with a good test tonight. At Iowa st. While they were bad last year, they’ve retooled and will be a much different team.
Beavs will win if they play good solid defense. Teams with a lot of change have chemistry issues early on. Good defense can disrupt any momentum.
Beavs will need to hang close at half and then make a run in the second and close out with good defense. And make some free throws!!!!
MBB game set for ESPN3
Meanwhile, WBB season opens at 8 tonight vs LMU at Gill. Livestreamed by the school.
Rueck has a deep squad this year, says, ” …It’s also a problem in some ways for a coach trying to divvy up minutes and figure it all out. But that’s the problem every one of us wants, I can tell you that much…”
Anybody know how to find the mbb game?
It says ESPN3, but i dont think that’s a channel, is it?
And the Watch ESPN app requires a separate subscription?
Not doing that
It’s only on ESPN plus. I luckily have it as part of some Disney crap my son has.
Fubo doesn’t have it –
ESPN+ and it’s a separate subscription for that. How trash. Gotta pay for ESPN channels but then they create another pay wall to watch games they make exclusive thru ESPN+?
Looks like ESPN3 became ESPN+ si that you no longer can access a bunch of games under your provider. Now they require a ESPN+ subscription. Lame.
Agreed. I already pay $231 month for internet and cable from Xfinity.
ESPN 3 is online.
You might do yourself a favor and not bother.
Iowa St isn’t that good and the Beavs look atrocious on offense. No continuity, extremely discombobulated, can’t shoot worth 2 squirts of piss and turning it over left and right.
They’re gonna have to improve a lot to achieve that 4th place prediction.
Right now they’re closed to a cellar dweller.
Beavs down 16-12 with about seven minutes left in the half. Playing good D and rebounding well. Shooting like crap. Rand in early, lots of energy. Shot a crazy airball from about 15 ft out.
Someone gave me a bootleg link. Use at your own risk, lots of popups. And like Whiskey said, may not be worth your time.
The shooting is terrible

Down 26-20 at the half, not sure if they shot 30%. Wonder why Rand is shooting a three?
Beavs down 14 with 12 minutes left. Discombobulated bricklaying, I think 2-17 from three-land. This one is looking like a “L”.
Beavs playing hard but offense is awful. 2-17 from the 3. Why not play Taylor?
Beavs lose 60-50, never made a run. Atrocious shooting again. 7-14 from the foul line. Created a lot of turnovers, but it didn’t do them any good when they couldn’t make a shot.
That was painful to watch. Poor shooting and bad offensive sets. Someone needs to take over the Ethan role as he could manufacture a basket or get fouled to get to the line when the offense stagnated. Maybe Davis can do that later, but he is trying to find his role right now.
UGLY Loss. Hunt and Lucas were bad. Beavs 3-22 from 3. Free throw shooting bad. Out rebounded 39-34. Calloo & Silva 1 rebound each. Taylor looked good in the little time he played.
Interestingly, it looked like Tinks benched Lucas after that airball three with about four minutes left. Lucas came back in with a minute left, but the outcome was decided. The offense could not generate open looks. Even Alitishe missed a lot of inside shots. I hope these guys can shoot and they’re just working things out.
College basketball is ugly. So many new players always to incorporate. Got to get rotations sorted out and figure out who the go to guys will be. Need leaders to rise above. How was tinkles demeanor on the sidelines?
They did not show a lot of him, it was an Iowa St.broadcast. One time he looked pretty pissed when the Cyclones went up double-digits, towards the end when it was obvious they were going to lose he was smiling or maybe smirking over his clipboard in a huddle.
More regression to the norm by Tinks? I’m shocked.
Lady beavs win 82-52 and this beaver team plays solid defense and tough to defend given its length in the front court. I fully expect in 2 0maybe 3 years, this team will be a Final Four team. If you’ve never been to a lady beavs bb game, you’re missing out…..great fun and great basketball.
SO TRUE: If you’ve never been to a lady beavs bb game, you’re missing out…
Lots to be excited about, again, this year. Blocked shots favored the Beavs by a 13:1 margin; rebounds 44:31.
AJ Marotte was a big surprise to me, freshman from Texas with a lot of poise. And then there is little Noelle, now on scholarship; always brings energy even playing few minutes.
Can’t wait for the CW.
EDIT/ADD: Found vid of AJ:

Absolutely!
WBB is a great ticket…Speaking of, we won’t be able to make next Saturday’s noon game…Our tickets are section 16 row 1 if anyone is interested, let me know. Also comes with parking.
Tinks has changed his demeanor during games. He now is less animated and let’s his team play. This started towards end of last year. It’s good to see.
What hasn’t changed is how incredibly hard he makes offense look. It takes this team a long time to get a good look at the basket and it has more to do with us than the opposing team.
I have high expectations for this team but major concern with our ability to shoot. Outside of Callou and Lucas, we don’t seem to have any shooters. I don’t think this will improve unless we change our offensive approach.
Coming into the season, I thought Hunt would be a solid point guard if he improved from last year. I’m not seeing any improvement and more of the same. He takes bad shots, makes bad passes and poor decisions in key moments, and struggles to get the team into it’s offense. He’s a good option in short stints but not dependable with extended minutes. It’s too early to tell what Davis is, but I think our season depends on Davis improving and taking over for Hunt because I don’t think we can win with Hunt as our starting PG.
On the bright side, we have a ton of athletes and potential to be elite defensive team
I was listening to Doug Gottlieb talk the other day about Steph Curry and how to become a great shooter. He said anyone can make an uncontested shot, but what Curry has always done is practice moving, contested shots that he expects to see in games. Later on that night, I went to the Portland State game and watched the Beavers put up brick after brick the entire 1st Half. Then when the players came out after half-time, I couldn’t help but notice that they couldn’t miss when they were all just standing around warming up. I don’t know what Tinkle works on in practice, but I think Gottlieb makes a good point.
I also agree that the team is athletic. I think Tinkle struggles in recruiting and often ends up settling for guys who have the body and athleticism to compete at this level, but not necessarily the basketball skills. It’s like they have the quickness to get to the rim, but they don’t know what to do when they get there. Other than that, I wouldn’t mind seeing Tinkle run more screens/picks etc. designed specifically to get Lucas free for some shots – as our most reliable outside shooter, he seems underutilized.
Is the Beavers offensive line at full strength today?
Run the damn ball!
Leavengood probably out
Good question. Concerned about Levengood, his absence may have impacted the run game lately…..said may
I believe he is questionable today, not sure about Kipper either. Both haven’t seemed 100% lately when they have played.
BIG JIM, at halftime of the WBB game, mentions play calls and personnel decisions as things he expects Bray to impact. (Could bode well for seeing more blitz’s and third down rotation at ILB)
Noteworthy, BJ has seen Shaw with his back to the wall and says you’ll see more changes/surprises from Shaw than Bray.
Expect some form of option running offense and an inexperienced freshman qb. Luck of the Beavs he is likely to break all freshman passing debut records for Stanford. Based on his hudl film, he looks to throw downfield and stares at the first option. Maybe Beavs can expect Stanford to open the offense up and go deep all game. I expect Shaw to do anything counter-intuitive just to prove how smart Stanford players are…either pass deep or triple option and Beavs won’t be prepared for either one. LOL sigh
Go Beavs 31-21 Beavs win though
As frustrating as the Beavs have been the past two games in their quest for bowl eligibility, things could be worse. FCS Samford has just laid 42 points on Florida in the first half! I hope firing the DC during the season works better for the Beavs than it has for the Gators! Florida may still win as they have scored 35.
Holy shit!
Looks like Florida’s D “improved” in the second half, they lead 70-52 with a few minutes left!
Beavs right the ship as Shaw stands like a statue and watches helplessly. Beavs.. 41-7. Defensive adjustment imperceivable because a bunch of us AB’s, except little Huge Toolius, could stop Stanford.
Tree up the butt! 31-27
Marahfield QB Dom Montiel is on visit today.
Along with quite a few other unofficial visitors.
No official visitors though
Beav’s win so as to lure me to coming out for the ASU game and inevitable letdown.
Game thread will go up in just under an hour. 1:30 pacific.
