Sunday Colorado Blues

Let me know if you have any questions for the Stanford blogger, Hank of GoMightyCard. We’ll be doing our yearly routine.

Some thoughts on last night copied from the prior thread, in case you missed these. They sum up my feelings at this point in the Smith tenure. Don’t get me wrong, I’m grateful Smith brought in legit 3-star talent and made us respectable, but I don’t see how a guy with that type of [poor] feel is going to be the answer.

People seem to be making excuses that we’re not that good, etc…well the entire league is not that good, and we should be 8-1. Think about that. With boring “conservative” coaching, we’d very likely be 8-1. Sure, we can’t know definitely that punts and properly management of 4ths would have resulted in wins, but looking at the games in retrospect, very likely. I don’t buy we don’t have the talent. We don’t have the coaching talent. The one thing Smith has done very well is bring in legit 3-star talent, so I disagree we don’t have the talent. The HC is losing the games with reckless calls. I saw this first at Nevada in 2018 and commented on it that game as something to watch because the management was so extraordinarily stupid. Sure enough that pattern continued, and I’d say last night it got even worse, because Smith now doesn’t go for two when it IS the correct move. It’s almost like he realized his stupid decision earlier in the game and was trying to self-correct there. That’s a HC way too much in his own head. Need a HC with “feel”…hard to explain what that is, but you know it when you see it, and Smith doesn’t have it.

Just to back up my comment (which I made well before the TD). You go for two for a host of reasons:

1. You were gifted a 2nd life with the 60yd FG…
2. Defense is awful and even more winded than usual (altitude!).
3. On the road.
4. Both teams have to go for 2 next time anyway, so front run that…
5. Crowd was into it…12th man. Refs were going to start wanting to go home…

There are more reasons, but those are obvious.

Run Colletto and take your chances. That was your best play to win that particular game. If the coach is going off a play-sheet and has no feel for that, then he has to go. Will cost you too many games. Smith built up recruiting and got us close, and now someone good but mature has to take over.

For the record, I want Smith to work out and see the potential. Problem is he’s getting worse. People used to make excuses that he was taking these stupid risks because he didn’t have the talent, yada yada. I saw these, properly, as excuses for a guy that’s “one of us”…it’s harder to break those family ties. I get it. So now in year four he does have the players, and his risk management and feel are worse than ever. I’d argue they actually got worse since he does have legit talent now and is still making the same boneheaded calls.

To me it’s a lot like when a girl is dating a guy she loves who is flawed, and she wants to fix him. That never works. Smith is the hometown hero everyone loves, and he has potential, but he’s self-destructive…there’s no “fixing” him. These conditional situations where “if he only did x, he’d be great!” don’t work out in relationships, workforce, or football teams.

The burden of proof has officially shifted to the Smith bulls. You guys have to prove with evidence he can change. We have a large enough sample now to say these are inherent flaws that will never change.

  2. Coaching staff has regressed, and now we are seeing the team regress.

I expect they will win one of the home games and get to a bowl, but it is tempting to begin rooting against their success just because the staff has created the problem and the staff needs a shake-up.

No post-game excuses or platitudes will do for this one.

    • I would love to see that, but I am hard pressed to see where we get the 6th win to become bowl eligible. Stanford? Maybe; they just got their **** pushed in by Utah and will probably be more incentivized to come out swinging. ASU? We have never defensibly done well with these mobile QB’s and that kid can be good. Oregon? Well, Oregon is Oregon as Jimmy Lake just found out. I don’t think it would have mattered if he’d kept his mount shut. Our two best opportunities were just squandered in Cal and CU.

I’m tired of seeing the team come out flat in the first 15 minutes – before you know it we are playing behind. Utah worked out, but not so for Cal or CU. We have to match the motivation and enthusiasm brought by the other team – I don’t see a lot of that on our sidelines; it might help if our coach got a little excited once in a while.

    • Yes, that’s awful, too. The problem I have with this argument is the defense was good enough to win 8 games if the HC got out of the way.

    • Hasn’t been an issue for him in 4 years as this isn’t something that just started this year. It’s been this bad since day 1. Hopefully he doesn’t want to go down with the sinking ship that is Tibs and makes a change, even if for nothing else but to perhaps buy himself more time.

Coaches typically improve and mature. JS has not. He needs to. Defensively hard to say the talent is there. Cal lights us up and scores 3 against Arizona. Colorado is crap and looks dynamic against Beavs. We have absolutely zero push at LOS. The margin of error for Beavs is slim and without sound coaching decisions and great QB play, we are not good enough to win even against bad teams.

      • Seems the results haven’t changed but I’ve seen adjustments. Just to varying degrees of success and without an ability to put pressure on qb it’s really hard to be effective on 3rd down.

  4. It’s all a little confusing to me right now, I’m not sure if the Beavs do have the overall talent at all positions and the staff is getting outcoached against supposedly lesser opponents. Smith was quoted as saying teams have film now and P-12 coaches are good. Ok, so then where are the adjustments by Beav coaches? Three straight slow starts are also concerning as they’ve contributed to the losses.

Even the o-line was not as dominating, especially on that series where the Beavs were up 24-20 and looking for a game-ending drive. It seems like recruiting sold out for run stoppers on the front seven because the run D was so bad and now there’s no speed to get sacks or TFL’s. I also hope Gebbia heals and is back next year. I think he’s an upgrade, but if something doesn’t change with the defense this cycle is going to go on for years.

    • I’m not sure you’re ever going to have the overall talent at all positions. Even the great USC and good Oregon teams of the past had flaws. Beavs have legit 3-stars on this roster and some 4-star talent. They look bigger and faster. Pass the eyeball test. They’ve played well enough to win 8 games. To me that says they have the talent.

  5. Leach after his kicker missed 3 FGs.

“There’s an open tryout on our campus for kickers. Anybody that wants to kick or walk on and kick at Mississippi State, we’ll hold a tryout any time you can get over there to our building, providing you’re cleared by the NCAA.”

    • I know it’s “feel good” that Hayes made the 60 yarder and we can argue that Smith should have gone for two, but it shouldn’t be glossed over that Hayes missed a 38-yard fucking field goal when the Beavs had to have it.

      • I’d be interested to hear Smith’s talk with Hayes. I doubt it was anything like Leach’s statement. I like Hayes and again see the potential, but he has to perform. We’d have been better off if he made the more routine FGs and he missed the 60 yarder. That he did the opposite, to me, implies he has performance anxiety issues. With no expectations to make the 60yard he hits it, and with expectations he misses the easier ones.

        • I agree, it plays into the psychology of kicking when it’s obvious he has an elite leg. And I wouldn’t want Smith to go “Leach” on Hayes either, but with everything going on in that game, it’s getting lost that Hayes missed an easy try that would have changed the dynamic at least temporarily. Also, if Smith truly has the pulse of the team, maybe another reason to go for two in the first OT?

          • 3
            1

Sounds like we need a sports psychologist on staff…lol.
I know I’ve been harping on that since I started the blog, but given the Beav’s issues, I think it would be the best return on investment. I mean that 100%.

  6. 5
    1

Some of the issues are coaching, but I also think we are watching the Nolan that didn’t earn starter reps out of camp. No idea on Gebbia’s status, but I would support a change. There were multiple shots down the field yesterday and many had bad placement. Try Vidlak get him some seasoning.

      • I know the D is bad, but I really disagree with this argument because there are 100 plays per game or whatever that number is on D, and that quickly devolves into a state of high entropy that’s hard to predict. Which play exactly cost them the game? And can you really blame the D when the game can still be won if the HC simply punts? This is why it’s hard to blame the D, as bad as they are.

Whereas the HC making one bonehead call that has a clear and direct result is much easier to predict and control. Also, a HC is supposed to be a leader who puts the team in the best position to win. Smith is putting his players in the best position to lose, and worse, he doesn’t realize it (we know this because he never learns from past mistakes. We can only conclude he doesn’t view them as mistakes).

The D is pretty awful, but we could easily be 8-1 with this D if the HC made simple, correct calls.

Cal loss was simply Cal playing great. WSU and CO are both on Smith.

      • The first offense play of the game was a deep throw with low percentage of completing. Then two more passes and a 3 and out. In the 2nd overtime its 2nd and 15 and yet another deep low percentage throw that was unsuccessful. OC is obsessed with throwing the deep ball when that isn’t the Beavers game. then when its 3 and 15 they throw a short pass well short of the first down marker. Very little use of the fly sweeps that have been successful, and when used ran to the short side of the field where they have no room to go. Yes the lack of a good defensive scheme and execution has contributed to the losses but in the WSU and Colorado games the Offensive play calling also greatly contributed to the losses.

        • Also, there’s rarely been any separation from the WR’s on those streaks/go’s or whatever you want to call them. Wide-open pass plays have been when the TE sneaks out and Nolan missed an easy TD yesterday.

    • There was a play late in the game, might have even been in OT, where the TE was wide open deep and he threw short. I think it was a 3rd down and we didn’t convert because of it. What was so frustrating is that the short receiver was literally right in front of the deep guy, so it’s not like it was a different area of the field. He should have seen both. I was pulling my hair out. Nolan is a very nice backup. A very meh starter.

Agree we at least understand now why he wasn’t named the starter out of camp. We can at least absolve Smith of that.

      1

In 2019, the Beavs almost got to six wins with a crappier defense because Luton did not turn the ball over (three INT’s all year). The margin for error is slim with a bad defense, Nolan makes some amazing throws, but the bad turnovers have also contributed to the losses.

  7. Brought it up in the other thread but my endurance is pretty much dead. I have been a fan since the first game of the 1994 season when I was 5. My lifetime fan record is 149-159.

If you are one of the old farts thats been a fan since Dee Andros Idk how you are even alive through all the pain. 240-436. Holy shit yall.

    • I was born in to this. Both of my parents are OSU alum, I lived in Corvallis and played football at Parker stadium in middle school. My dad took me to Gill to watch Charlie Sitton and AC Green. So it’s been since day 1. These last few years I decided I’ve had enough of putting in any effort or money in to this team. My weekends are much better being spent at the river or up the mountain, I’ll pull up the game tracker and follow AB comments to get a feel for what’s happening. Not paying for TV or tickets.

      • So was I…Dad graduated in ’56, but my Uncle and Aunt also went there. Grandparents on Mom’s side were U of O graduates, so there was always the rivalry factor going on and the angst was always especially high during the Civil War. I got to OSU in ’79 and, by some miracle, graduated in ’84 – but went to every home game during that awful stretch, with the only bright spot being the win against Stanford when Elway was QB. Was in Husky Stadium for the miracle win there in ’85 – the silence was deafening in Husky Stadium! It was even better as the Huskies had been one of the teams that had been advocating that the Beavs get kicked out of the conference – as bad as we ever were, we never went 0-12.

It wasn’t until the late ’90’s when Riley became head coach and a spark was seemingly lit and we discovered the Beavs could win in the PAC. The Fiesta Bowl against Notre Dame was another highlight. Still want to see a Rose Bowl, though.

    • I’m one of those, but fortunately was out of the country for several of the down years- listened to the great game against Notre Dame on a stream on my computer in New Zealand. The best part of that was that the announcers were ND students who were going nuts about how ND was being handled. Retired in Oregon and was hoping for great things after Riley left, but…

  8. After a night of rest here is my 2 cents worth. JS is young and occasionally pretty dumb but the potential is there and proof of it shines at times (pass to Gould then 60 yard field goal – great coaching move). So I’m willing to give more time to see if he will mature in his first HC gig.
BUT: He really has come to the end of the Tiny Tim experiment. He needs to change that immediately for JS’s own good. Part of maturing and surviving as a HC is making the hard decisions all leaders must make… if you don’t you won’t be leading long.
I hope he does the right leadership thing.

  9. Wow our history is insane. Smith is #11 out of 17 by winning percentage with .350. Anderson is 13 of 17 with .223. Hall, Avezzano and Fertig are under .200. Holy balls lol

  10. Damnit, this is why I wanted DE to come back for 3 years and groom Smith. DE was pretty conservative on offense and recruited hair on fire speed on defense. DE wanted to come back, but was ignored!

  11. Angry you can’t say you see he has potential but there’s no fixing him. If he can’t be fixed, what’s his potential? Pick a side.

    • He has potential, but he repeatedly decides to throw it away with reckless and I’ll conceived forced play calls (most often on bad 4th down decisions in own territory). Whether it is based on dumb ego or junkie like tendencies doesn’t matter much as he has been so stubborn and you can see him basically refuse to change and choose to make the same mistakes that put the team behind the 8 ball and increase odds for losing close games.

Beavs are going to be in quite a few close games so this is a very costly makeup for Smith as has cost us coming out on short side of stick on many occasions and will continue to do so unless he allows himself to adapt and grow. He hasn’t to thus point. The small amount of improved success is mostly just to some better athletes on the team and offense having some capability when Smith’s head scratching decisions don’t get in their own way.

      • Are Smith/Lindgren students of Bill Belichick? That 4th and 2 call from deep in their own territory reminded me of that play against the Colts that failed also many years ago and then the undefeated Colts went on to score the winning TD with the short field. At least the Patriot caught the pass but was stopped short.

Alright, I’m headed out for a nice 30 mile ride on this lovely morning. Gonna do my best Riley impersonation and waive to the milkman and call him by first name.

  13. The crazy thing about being a Beaver fan, and it seems unique, is that we are constantly disappointed when our team looses games that they should win easily, but then they keep us hanging on by winning games that they shouldn’t. This may be related to the coaching, but they rarely do what we expect, so we as fans can never relax and have confidence in our team. I don’t think that’s changed the entire time I’ve been a fan and I don’t think it ever will.

  14. Does anybody expect this team recover well from a 2OT loss, plus AGAIN having the chance to become bowl eligible? They seem to pucker up about that.

The defense really appears to need speed, particularly in the front 7. That’s one aspect of the recruiting that’s been overlooked as the general narrative is that OSU is getting more legitimate size and better athletes. There’s no one that just stands out on the D for the quickness and speed.

  15. 19

    1. Don’t have the personnel to effectively run a 3-4 D. Been saying this for awhile. Ditch it.

    2. We really miss Alton Julian.

    3. Why are they rarely blitzing anymore?

    4. I saw this brought up that Cal only scored 3 vs Arizona. Not making excuses but Cal was down several starters including Chase Garbers. Luck o da Beavs.

    5. O line was down at least 2 starters last night. Probably what led to so many holding penalties and a less effective run game.

    6. Why does it seem like the receivers have hands of stone. I’ve seen so many dropped passes this year that SHOULD have been caught.

    7. I’ve seen enough of Nolan. He isn’t any different than former beaver QB’s that light up bad defenses and struggles against good ones. Problem is, he’s not lighting up bad defenses anymore.

    8. Opponents have figured out the Beavs. Slow down the running game and get pressure on Nolan. They’ve been doing that.

    9. I’ve seen enough of bad Nolan I’m ready for a change. Honestly I wouldn’t care if Noyer started against Stanford.

    10. I saw one fly sweep last night. And it was late in the game and a think to Silas Bolden? What? Why? Where were the outside runs last night?

    11. Going for it on 4th down early in the 3rd quarter last night was idiotic. CU’s only TD until their last drive to take the lead came when they were given the short field.

    12. I walked away with about 20 seconds left in regulation only to get a text out in the shop from the wife that said it was going to OT. I had given up. Colorado did everything by the book those last 25 seconds or so. 99.9% of the time that gets you a W.

    13. The wife was saying go for 2 after the first TD in OT. I disagreed. If they did and didn’t get it? Well, we’d all be screaming today it was a stupid decision.

    14. Hindsight is always 20/20 but I’ve changed my stance. Beavs should have gone for 2. Defense wasn’t stopping anything at that point. Win or lose it right there and live with the decision.

    15. How in the fuck do you give up a TD on 3rd and 15 from the 16 yd line???? Seriously? Go at least dime there and keep everything in front of you. Beav DB’s continue to look awful.

    16. If you lack talent it is your job to put your players in position to be successful. OSU coaches don’t do this.

    17. Colorado is bad. That was a horrific loss. Twice. Ever been kicked in the balls twice in a span of 15 minutes? Welcome to the world of being a beaver fan.

    18. Isn’t the definition of madness doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result?

    19. This team isn’t getting better as the season progresses. They’re getting worse. Telltale sign on a poorly coached team.

    20. Coaching staff needs a shakeup. Tibesar needs to be shown the door ASAP.

  16. 2
    1

So something else to chew on. Did you all happen to see the replays of Jimmy Lake smacking the Husky player in the head after breaking up a little scuffle?
Could be just enough for the Washington AD to suspend and replace. That old school helmet slap, by a coach, of which I received many in high school, doesn’t play in 2021.

Look it up yourself’s. I don’t know how to do the fancy embedded video stuff.

    • My Husky buddy said this morning, “Jimmy Lake is a complete embarassment. Horrible coach and horrible person.”

Hope we can get him as a DC!

      • How about kicking on 4th down with minutes left in the game and not taking your last, best shot? Even worse, seeing the ball sail over the punter and Oregon getting 2 more points? I know that had to frost the Husky faithful and there will be a lot of talk going on this week about this coaches future. I even cringed during that series as Husky fans are relentless – this is starting to remind me of the Willingham era, which I am relishing more than just a little.

I know it is a sad state of affairs when your happiness comes from seeing your rivals melt down to compensate for your own teams lack of production.

    • 1
      2

I just watched the video, Lake can rationalize all he wants but he was acting like a raving lunatic. His “performance” is already under review by the administration.

      • 1
        1

That’s what I’m talking about, he’s running down the sideline like he’s possessed. That kind of emotion does not usually end well. No matter how hard he struck, it’s a bad look. Like someone who has lost it mentally.

      • 6
        1

I agree with you, but let’s be honest, it is Seattle and the U of W – the heart of ‘wokeistan’ in the NW: he can and most likely will be terminated for this. I can tell you that most Husky fans were/are looking for any reason to let this guy go.

But let’s not lose sight of the fact that at least Jimmy is ‘vaccinated’ – that’s what’s important!

        • 2
          1

They need to start suspending every football player who shoves another player after the whistle. Clearly they’re crossing the line into assault territory.

  17. Has anyone ever calculated the total number of points after Smith makes one of those crazy fourth down calls? It seems like everyone time, the game is close, we fail to convert, we give the other team a short field and they go an score a RD against. But what results afterwards is even more worrisome. It give the other team more hope, confidence and momentum. It seems like then after that, the other team goes and score on their next 3-4 drives (usually TD’s). Smith is looking at the odds for one play but is not looking at the bigger picture of what they may do to the team for the rest of the game.

  18. 11
    1

At least Mike Riley’s teams had a history of getting better as the season progressed(too little too late) but they usually got better. I know its early in Smith’s tenure but they have gotten worse the last two seasons as the season progressed. That’s coaches not adapting as the season progresses and opposing coaches adapting.

  19. I agree there has been an upgrade in talent, there is no argument to be made there. The reason Roberts leads the conference in tackles is because of the lack of production on the d-line. He is a solid LB but stacking tackles 5 yards past the line of scrimmage is where he gets alot of those stats. The D-line gets rag- dolled way to often and puts minimal pressure on the QB. IMHO thats where our biggest problem is personel wise on D. Add the Tibs factor of consistently getting out coached with zero adjustments every week, that I can see, and well, you have this defense.

  20. Funny how going for two is even controversial and Smith’s decision to opt for the extra point isnt.
Go back the the WSU game, OSU was driving for that final gap closing TD. They didnt quite get there.
But Canzano asked Smith after the game, “if you had reached the endzone, were you thinking go for 2 there?”

Smith replied “oh yeah, all the way”

But when faced with a very similar scenario last night(road game, tired defense, chance to tie or win) he opted for the tie? Scoring on Colorado should have been a higher perdentage try than vs WSU, so what changed?

    • Maybe Bradford is who we designed our best 2 pt plays around, and him being out influenced that call? Only thing i can think of that might make a little sense.(only a little)

  21. Serious question- who are the Beavs playmakers offense/defense?

Defensively I’d say early this year-rezjon, Julian, Robert’s, Hughes Murray.

Defense currently- Robert’s (3rd down pass liability). Everyone else disappeared.

Offense Baylor and Lowe-Lowe needs more touches.
    Harrison and Gould, Bradford.

Why the offense is still not playing Gould, Bradford and Harrison is beyond belief. The wr coach is really cute running 17 players out each week, but there is a reason no other team, pro/college, he’ll even high school does that. It gets rid of any rhythm.

Coach’s outsmarting themselves left and right on this staff.

    • The coaching staff reminds me of the water boy coach. “We’re gonna run a fake, no we’re gonna fake the fake, no he’s gonna think about faking”.

Eliminate the cute stories and the gambling and tight end sweep play. Stick with power running, run the fly sweep 3-5x a game, offensively. Defensively blitz the shit out of teams and make them beat you deep. We do that without the bone headed decisions we’re 8-1, 7-2 worse case.

And last comment. Personally this season has worn my fandom down. I’m a typical mid 30s, couple kids. Was a season ticket holder from 09-14. Gave that up when work was busy for wife and I.

Currently feel like I am about to give up fandom in general. So many interests outside of beavers football, and really I just don’t enjoy watching this team. Almost feel like the shitty Andersen years was easier.

Anyhow just venting, but I’m all seriousness when I think of my kids, I’m super stoked for them to go to a different university so I can become a fan of another team too. Just my two cents. Beavers fandom has felt like more a curse than blessing. Although the baseball run was epic and basketball last year was great too

    • Son goes to University of Oklahoma. Watch all their games but still Beavers #1. On Family weekend got to go to OU vs West Virginia. 85,000 people but I felt that 45,000 in Reser is loader. Autzen and Husky stadiums blow it away. I did fully enjoying sending my Duck friends a picture of the front of the stadium that says 7 National Championships, 50 Conference Championships and 173 AA saying this is what a Football Power House looks like.

Bottom line OU Blue Blood, OSU in my blood.

  23. 13

I feel bad for the players. Smith, Lindgren, and Tibs are letting them down.

I am hoping for a win next week against Stanford so that the players get to the postseason. They deserve it.

  24. If they came out and ran the shit out of the ball they win this game. The team has been very effective when they setup easy and short 3rd downs if they even get them and then you might have a 4th and 1 which Colleto always seems to get. Nolan threw the ball 38 times! That’s bullshit! He should throw it about 15. He makes terrible decisions and rarely checks down so the defense doesn’t even cover the check down. Every drive I was telling my buddy they just need to come out and run the ball 3 straight times and what does Lindgren do? He throws a deep ball on first down which of course is incomplete and sets up 2nd and 10 and puts them behind schedule to make the first.

    1. Need to just run the ball.

    2. Fire tibs!

    3. Should’ve went for 2.

    4. Hayes a headcase?

    5. Use the Colleto fullback packages more.

    6. Beason needs to sit.

    7. Why is Bolden playing over Gould?

    8. Passing should’ve only been taking place on 3rd and longs until they show the inability to run it.

Like I said before go after the Oregon DL coach. Great recruiter and can bolster the weak link on defense.

    • I read today can’t go for two on first OT. I was thinking the same thing though. Beason had a nice block on Harrison TD run. Receivers can’t get a rhythm going with all the subbing.

      Stop throwing deep fade passes.

      Number 7, yes.

Softy is saying there will be some news coming out of UW later this afternoon. If they fire Lake today, does Smith make a quick move to bring him in as a Defensive consultant(Or DC if we grow a pair and can Tibesar?)
I’d say our chances would be better if UW buys out Lake’a remaining contract and OSU doesnt have to worry a long term deal. Might be a good thing if Lake is considered toxic after last night. Give him a low risk option to rehab his image.

    • I couldn’t care less, but if Lake is fired for what he did, it’s going to be a bad look for OSU to offer him a job right away. They would likely work something out behind closed doors for next season and let it cool down.

    • Someone in an earlier thread said that Smith and Lake did not get along well at UW. Not sure if that would be a good dynamic (at all) if that was the case.

    • ^^^This sounds like a great option B to keeping Tibs around longer. Lake and JS know each other and maybe could collaborate and rekindle something similar to the UW Peterson era. Bring Chris Petersen as the advisory role….

    • Those guys at KJR have a real ****on for Jimmy and want him gone before it gets really bad – like Willingham bad. I think the real problem was that there was never a real coaching search, Lake was anointed by Peterson as his successor. We know how that works out and it is never good. The Ralph Miller hand-off to Jimmy Anderson was one for the books and what I really think set our BB program back literally decades.

  26. Looks like the U of W’s offensive coordinator was fired – John Donovan. Jimmy dodged a bullet and this was the sacrificial lamb to appease the masses. There was just as much vitriol for Donovan as there is for Lake. He was also a target of the KJR ‘Husky Honks’.

  27. Nobody’s talking about it, but WSU has a decent shot at winning the Pac12 north.
Coming off a bye week, they travel to oregon for their main remaining test. Coming off a bye should help.
Them they have Arizona at home and the apple cup on the road.
Oregon’s path after hosting WSU this week is Utah on the road and OSU at home. The head to head winner this week will likely be the north champs.

I’d take Lake down here for DC.

I also wonder if the Beavs might give Noyer a series or two. Nolan deserves a lot of credit for what he’s done, but it’s clear the receivers can’t get to all his passes. Don’t know if the coaches went with Noyer to start the season due to experience or what – maybe he and Nolan were more or less even. I do know that the offense seems to be as out of sync as it was early in the Purdue game, and perhaps another look at Noyer is warranted.

    • At this point, why not give Vidlak some run. Noyer coming in doesnt benefit anybody. His career is over in a few weeks. Might as well give the future some experience without risk of burning his redshirt anymore.

    • I wonder if Nolan needs his contacts prescription adjusted. Everyone remembers him squinting so bad last year when he was trying to see the play coming from the sideline. Now it seems like he’s not seeing open receivers and checkdowns, and so many inaccurate throws. I just can’t imagine him not saying anything if his vision is being affected when it likely could be fixed.

    • Will we see more LB blitzes? 2 Standup DE with 2 hand in the ground DL and 3 LB? I am surprised Smith actually did what Riley failed to do and fire/dismiss a coach near the end of the season. Shake up can be good for a team.

    • Cant believe Smith did it. I’m all for it, but is that going to change the D-line play? Doubtful but I hope the scheme and adjustments change. Great opportunity for Bray.

  29. This shows me a lot about Smith. He had the guts to do the right thing. Super, super happy he made the correct decision. And that he didn’t wait until the end of the year to do it. If we’re lucky, maybe we can get Lake. I’ll honestly take anything else at this point. It’s a great day to be a Beav.

    • Our defense wasn’t healthy. If something turns gangrene, you amputate and adapt after the fact. Curioua how the remainder of the season will go. If Bray gets the defense to play like Utah did against Stanford, and does that consistently the next 3 games, does he get promoted to DC after the season? He’s a great recruiter and he’s been a LB coach for what seems like almost a decade.

  30. And he’s in the last year contract so no big buyout. Not that it was much to start but for a program like OSU, it matters. He was making 600k this year.

    • That probably played a part of why he never got a contract extension and why he wasn’t fired. AD Barnes probably gave the ok after crunching the numbers.

Good news and quite surprising actually. Good luck to Tibesar, he had a midwest pipeline for a few guys, and his initial 4 principles of defense sounded great after Klune’s debacle. But in game strategy and execution always has seemed baffling without the big space-eating interior linemen.

Tibs held to his scheme rather than adjust to his player/talent available. If you have a d-line with no push, it seems you adjust and get bodies on the line to confuse or pressure right away.

Bray may have his opportunity to shine, I hope he does. He may go all in on linebackers blitzing and bringing an attack mentality rather than the drop 8 man/zone mystery we’ve been seeing. I wonder if we see Roberts and SPeights out on 3rd and long. How fast is Franke? Mascerenes? DO we have a fast linebackers?

This may assure the Stanford game as a win, and JS winning back the locker-room type move. How can the guys be unaware of the glaring short-comings and not be wondering about some type of changes. JS gets a gold star for courage to do this while there is still time to salvage the season.

Go Beavs. Now JS needs to explain himself because Tibs doesn’e decide when to run, pass, or punt on the offensive side, which is also an area of concern.

Lindren better be on his game from here on as well.

  32. That 3rd and 15 TD against the shitty Buffs may have been the last straw. Here’s a conspiracy theory, Lake called Smith and said I’m gone at the end of the season, I’ll be ready to join you for next year.

    • That’s funny bc Lake was the first name that came to mind as a replacement for Tibesar before I even knew that tibesar got fired. I don’t think Washington fires Lake though.

    • No way Lake comes. Lake was an arrogant asshole to Smith at UW. JS doesn’t trust Lake and Lake doesn’t respect JS. It’s a bad fit

      • I am not trying to challenge you, but you know this for a fact or from a reliable source? I’m asking, because I’ve heard the opposite from online commentators as well. I’ve heard that Lake and Smith are actually quite friendly with one another and had a Lot of respect for the scheme of the other would come up with.

        • I heard from a neighbor friend who was a UW position coach that they were quite friendly with each other but that changed during JS last year at UW. Maybe it’s water under the bridge but I know there was some trust issues over the last year or so.

  33. I have a hunch that Bray will be hired as next DC. He’s got coaching in his blood. It will be interesting to see what he can get out of this D. At a minimum, he should be able to get a bit more passion and energy. I’d guess he takes more chances. But I’d also guess the results won’t be drastically different until they get the horses to pressure QB and a head coach that doesn’t consistently give them a short field to defend. If you look at Bray’s career, it’s time for him to prove himself as a DC

    • Passion and Energy……does the name Vontaze Burfict ring a bell?
If Bray can instill that kind of juice without the out of control/dirty stuff we’ll see drastically different results. Maybe in time for the CW.

    • COTT right here by Beaverpride! 100% correct. I don’t see results changing, but I do hopefully see more chances with blitzing and inspired LB play. Bray definitely deserves a shot at DC. Clearly he wants it and has talked to Smith about it; otherwise he wouldn’t have been promoted to interim. Love this move by Smith! Shows he is aware of issues and knows what is needed for this team. Now offensively, we need to not go for it midfield on our side of the 50. We’re not Chip Kelly Oregon where we have the ability to make that automatic and break an opponent defensive will. So Lindgren needs to gameplan better too because he’s on the hot seat for sure. When is his contract up?

  34. Gonna take me some time to adjust to the reality that JS actually pulled the plug on Tibs mid-season. I thought that maybe things were getting to the point that there was a 25% or so chance that they would let him go in the off-season (and climbing), but never imagined it would be imminent or come during the season. That’s just so anti-Riley. There had to have been on-going internal tensions for some time for this to happen now. I have a hard time believing that there was enough pressure from administration or geezer boosters, but perhaps in combination with the on-going poor performance?

    • It’s anti Oregon state. When have we ever fired a coordinator or coach mid season. It’s a nice change and shows JS and Barnes are committed to winning

    • Very much so. Wish Tibs good luck, he seemed like a good guy.

Now Bray gets his shot to take the reigns for next season with a good defensive game plan the next 3 weeks. If he succeeds awesome, and we can go get a stud recruiter.

If things are ho hum, Jimmy lake or might even throw out Gary Patterson as a, not impossible but unlikely hire. Hell Patterson can keep the juices flowing, coach 1-2 years and move on to be a head coach somewhere else.

My favorite part of smith doing this is it seems he is as discouraged as the fans are with the defensive game plan. Not the players, as they can only do what their assignments are. Last week him talking about roberts matched up with the Clark kid in space. And how that was a bad decision. Probably more that we just dont know what the calls are/assignments.

  35. Cant help but to think this sends a message of accountability. I love the fact that J Smith released a sub performing coach mid-season, something Riley most likely wouldn’t have (did he ever? I have no idea) done.

Hope folks aren’t against this move and it doesn’t feel like panic to me – every other program sets the same standards for their coaching staff – why shouldn’t we? Good luck to Tibs, but this wasn’t working – looking forward to seeing Bray take over.

  36. I have wanted tibs fired for a long time now and now that it’s done, I will say best wishes to him. He’s going to catch on somewhere and do big things. As a linebacker coach. It just didn’t work here.

    • Yeah, seems like a nice guy. Was a good position coach. Just wasn’t working out as DC. Surprised this happened during the season though but guess Smith has brass balls after all.

  37. I think the circumstances led to the need for immediate change. Giving up 39 and 37 points to two P-12 bottom feeders with previous anemic offenses made it clear things were not going in the right direction for whatever reasons.

  38. Glad Bray gets a chance to run things for a bit. Probably not much he can do to switch things up at this stage but even if he can get some slight improvement that would show a lot. Bray will get an offer from somewhere so we might as well have first Crack.

  39. Today was moving day for a few programs,
    UW fired their OC,
    Beavs fired the DC,
Florida fired their DC and OL coach

All pretty similar stories. Guys who were hired were given too many chances and they kept failing.

and UMass fired their head coach too.

    • I’m sort of surprised Dan Mullen survived that debacle against South Carolina yesterday. I guess the coordinators were the sacrificial lambs.

  40. @angry, read today that teams can’t go for two on the first OT touchdown. I had similar thoughts about going for two as you did but wasn’t aware of that rule until today. Anyone else hear this?

  41. Angry must be 300mg deep in a gummy coma. Missed the best news of the day.

Also, McCarten’s IG post tonight makes it sound like he might be back on the field soon

  42. The biggest issue with our D line is the beavs don’t have a lineman that demands a double team…of course a dt creates a numbers mismatch in favor of the defense. Without that Steven Paea (sp) type defender, there isn’t a numbers mismatch and. the beavers do not appear to be as capable on their one on one match-ups. So, how do you solve that problem….that’s part of what I’ll be looking for in their remainsng games on defense. Promote from within breeds loyalty and commitment and once they see the commitment by JS to make needed improvements, loyalty to the new DC will follow. Plus, promoting and retaining someone lime Bray, would lessen recruits uncertainty about the change at DC. The right decision could be the most important decision for Smith’s future at OSU. the wrong hiring decision could also have a negative effect on JS coaching tenure. Hire from within and make Bray. I’ve got to think it’s a lot more challenging to replace a DC than say a position assistant coach to that’s another box to check in favor of Bray. Don’t delay, promote coach Bray. Thank you and you’re all welcome on advance.
