  1. Run the ball and then run some more! I guess the Beavs are 2nd in the nation in line yards. They should be running it as much as a triple option team. Nolan should throw about 15 times after they have established the run. If landman is out it should be a blowout.

    42-21 Beavs!

  2. For shit’s sake, it looks like Arizona is going to beat “Cal Light”. Up 10-3 with a minute and a half left with the ball. Timing is everything in life! Luck O’ The Beavs.

  3. Wow, missing some players or not, Cal losing to UA 10-3 after nearly hanging 40 on the Beavs last week isn’t a good look for the Beavs. Zona only gives up 30 total rushing yards to the Beavs like 280. Good work Tibs!

  4. Should be able to run their base offense and defense right at them and win by 2 scores while in control of the game for the duration. If it turns into a defensive struggle where they somehow abandon the run or a shootout and they’re getting torched and exposed (again) in the secondary they earn 100 more #FireTibs points.

Shenault back. Can we contain him? Can we get pressure on the QB? Can we be better than 50% on 3rd down? Will our coaches see success in the run game then decide that it’s working too well and start throwing deep routes only? How many fake punts or 4th downs will we go for? So many questions!

  6. Just got home from lady beavs as WW. 30 point win but WW not a bad team…jalena metrovic is going toake big contributions this year.

  7. I will never understand why we insist on dropping 8 and only rushing 3 on 3rd and long. We get absolutely no pressure and then they find the soft spots in the zone. And because we are below average on defense, those soft spots always open up. I don’t understand the thinking of continuing to play that way. It’s not like we’re shutting down the pass or anything.

  8. Jim Wilson was criticizing the missed tackling on the first play; Austin and some other guy. And then the dumb ass long pass on our first play of offense, that wasn’t within 10 yards of the receiver notwithstanding the idiocy of calling a long pass; followed by too many men the huddle. What a shit show.

  9. Wow. Good thing we don’t like to run the ball. Looks like we’re trying to outsmart ourselves again. Is there something in their contracts where they get a bonus for having less than 6 wins?

  10. We might end up winning this game but it seems this coaching staff has a hard time getting the team ready for the start of the game.

  11. Sounds like it’s going to be a long afternoon, even if Beavers win. Wrong play calling, executing poorly this late in the season against a team this bad?

  12. Announcers said at start the Beavs had bad practices before Cal and it carried over to game. But supposedly a good this week. We’re they talking about the kick off squad?

  13. If they don’t come put running the ball next possession Tibs might not be the only one that needs to be fired. Is Langsdorf in the box with lindgren?

  14. 1st and ten; run gets 9 yards. next play. first down. coaching staffs outsmart themselves with astonishing regularity, especially in Corvallis

Smith will start his press conference talking about the slow start, the penalties, the missed assignments. Then he will talk about how they really need to look at those things and make some adjustments next week. I can’t wait.

Just pass every down, who gives a shit at this point. We get zero help from the defense. We might as well make this a complete cluster fuck instead of half of one.

  17. Hmmm…. I’m not a highly paid defensive coordinator… but, maybe we shouldn’t have linebackers covering WRs all the time.

    • Also comforting to see how hapless Colorado is after a missed fg. Just run the ball and stop fooling around with Nolan passing for a while. Baylor outside, Baylor inside, Gould fly sweep please.

  18. They need to figure out a bribe or something for players to get sacks. Its like they’re just going through yhe motions. I was watching a UCLA game and they come hard on the blitzes.

  19. I’m so sick of Nolan and passing the ball. Lindgren is fucking this game up. All they need to do is run the ball up the middle everytime.

  20. I wish we would quickly run a play on these close calls. Seems like we prefer to wait and give them plenty of time to decide to review further. And then follow that with a pass into double coverage.

  21. I’ll go in the booth and call only run plays and and we’ll win by 20. Nolan sucks and never looks at his crackdown. Wide open Lowe. Put in Noyer and run the ball.

  22. Bring in Noyer for the 2nd half. He’s not as bad as he was in the Purdue game and he is probably motivated for this game. He looked good with Colorado last year. Just run the ball with a few occasional PA passes.

    • Agreed as Nolan just isn’t getting it done although lindgren is screwing up the play calling. The beavers must be the worst 5-3 team in the nation.

  23. Beavs are averaging 5.4 yards per rush. Why do the coaches move away from team strengths. That is what I loved about David Shaws good Stanford teams. He would run the same play over and over until it got stopped. We are trying to be too cute by half. Run the dang ball!!!!!!

  24. Might be the worst half of football I’ve seen in a long time. Just plain bad everything. Top to bottom. So lucky to be down 3, but lucky as can be that Colorado is so bad this season.

  25. Is there something special about the CU defense, that Lindgren can’t call a fly sweep? This game has been a WTF from the Beav’s first series on offense.

  26. Interestingly, all of our Pac 12 wins have been with 19 or less pass attempts. Losses have all been over 20 attempts. We currently are at 15. Baylor and Lowe both over 5 yd averages. Well so are colletto and Nolan for that matter. This is the 91st run defense in the country. Have no idea why we are making this so hard. Not sure how we got to 5 wins playing like we have recently. The team from the last 2 weeks might only win vs Idaho.

  27. Anybody getting worried Baylor might enter the portal and go run for a better coached team and a shot at a real bowl game?

Seeing his OC go away from the team’s strength @ WSU when it counted, and against one of the worst rush defenses in the conference, may make him consider other opportunities.

    • At some point the analytics will prove to Smith these are terrible 4th down play calls. We have plenty of stats from our own team this year to prove it

  28. Well, if they score on this short field, game over. Would have never gone for that at this point in the game. This is just awful. Beavers might not win another game all season.

  29. Dont mind the going for it on fourth but hate the call. Nolan is bad Nolan today and completely unreliable. Not that it was his fault on that 1. Lindgren calling a stinker.

  30. Daschle better hold Smiths feet to the fire at the presser. That was an egregious call to mow at that pony in the game. I can’t do this anymore.

    • The more significant question is why the lack of runs called.
Doesn’t matter, answer will be “did what we thought would give us the best chance to win”…….no follow up question will be takenl.

  31. I just remembered bowl eligibility is on the line….is that why this staff is puckering these last two games?

tisebar should be fired this week, Bray to serve as Acting. there’s a stadium renovation on the way, and you’re not going to sell those premimum lodge seass with these kind of shit shows. The AD needs to be willing to push Smith, hold people accountable and demonstrate there are expectations for improvement.

Hell, Smith ought to be intervening on Tisebar’s poor gameplanning (LBs on WRs again?) and Lindgren throwing too much. Don’t just sit there and be passive. Take action.

This is a pathetic showing, and I’m just looking at the boxscore and comments here.

  32. Bottom line the D coordinator is really bad. Smith I think is Riley and would never fire him. So bad. He cannot adjust at all. Obviously the whole league figured it out yet same stuff every game.

Second Nolan is not good. I was very fooled.

  33. And that’s the ballgame folks. Hope your happy Jonathon. Your fourth down gambles cost is yet another potential win. Man I am mad.

  34. Why don’t they blitz a young qb? I’m really tired of Nolan seeing blitzes and lots of pressure but Beavs rarely get to the qb anymore.

I won’t say game over, but I am beginning to wonder what is going on with JS and his staff. It looked loike the D just quit on the coach after that 4th down fail.

I need to dig up the 2018 Nevada game. I know in the comments I said Smith cost us the game with awful clutch decisions…think it was a 4th call or messing something up with the FG. Remember making a big deal of it because of how extraordinarily bad it was.

  36. It use to be the talent that held this team back. Now it’s the staff decisions/lack of adjustments from game to game. I’d rather watch a well executing team that loses than a team that just does dumb stuff. They should be way better at this point in the season.

    • completely agree krol; that’s what I meant up top about this reminding me of the late Riley era. we had talent; team was not well coached. That’s the difference with Anderson–he didn’t have any talent

  37. Our defense makes the opposing team’s running backs look like NFL talent. Announcer says offensive line “ just washes the defensive line.”

  38. Both teams look eerily similar. Decent running game hamstrung by horrendous passing after run gets momentum. Both coaches look awful!

  39. That Harrison play, fly sweep, screen, bootleg, and Baylor are there all day! But, let’s keep passing downfield into low percentage….

  40. Alumni need to pay for a Texas Holdem or Rooulette table he can run over and get it out of his system between plays….he absolutely can’t resist. Beavs have left about 5 wins on the table because of him.

  41. A bit strange to watch a team where the players have a better understanding of their own team identity than the coaches.
You watch Lowe, Gould, Bradford, Harrison and Baylor during this game and they just keep grinding despite JS.

  42. Wright giving wayyyy too much room there. Big chance for him to INT or at least make Colorado pass to the corner of the end zone.

  43. I don’t want to hear any of the vomit from smiths mouth during the press conference. He put his tenure there back to square one with these last two losses. Is it worse to suck and lose or to beat Utah and usc then lose to weak teams? Embarrassing.

  44. who was it, up above, that said Hayes may be the best kicker of the modern era? Or more to the point, the person who thumbed it down?

    • 3
      1

Agree. Colletto has been getting monster yards when he runs it. But they don’t like the easy plays.

What does smith say after this one? We ain’t done yet making dumb plays…we can still lose the next 3. Let’s do it boys!!!

  45. I’ve been a rah rah Beaver fan my entire life, but I just can’t mentally or emotionally do it anymore guys.

Legitimately worried about not making it to 6 wins this year with this defense of ours and the bipolar play calling.

Wish I was wrong, but this team had beat the optimism out of me.

  46. 11

Just to back up my comment (which I made well before the TD). You go for two for a host of reasons:

    1. You were gifted a 2nd life with the 60yd FG…
    2. Defense is awful and even more winded than usual (altitude!).
    3. On the road.
    4. Both teams have to go for 2 next time anyway, so front run that…
    5. Crowd was into it…12th man. Refs were going to start wanting to go home…

There are more reasons, but those are obvious.

Run Colletto and take your chances. That was your best play to win that particular game. If the coach is going off a play-sheet and has no feel for that, then he has to go. Will cost you too many games. Smith built up recruiting and got us close, and now someone good but mature has to take over.

    • 1
      2

You would have roasted the shit out of him had he gone for 2. Plus they get a chance as well. Say your second offense on field I would agree. Players look bad, defense absolute 100% players coaches scheme look horrible

    • 1
      1

I agree with most of what you have to say but you seem very reactionary. Smith is making strides and developing culture. His gambles although not always wise will pay off with more talented teams in the future. My biggest problem with this game is passing the ball too much. Nolan isn’t great but we all know that why doesn’t Lindgren?

      • We pass it too much but a hard disagree on games on our own 40 starting to pay off and that ever being a wise strategy for OSU. Noone is going to convert a higher percentage of those than Colletto, yet Smith and Lindgren are reluctant to even use him on 4th and 2 when in oppostions side of the field. They use him about 85% of the time when is 4th and 1 or less than a yard and a half. He runs for 3-5 yards on 70% of his runs yet they only trust it for 1.5 yards at most for some reason.

I could have lived with Colleto on 4th and 2 from the 41, even if I don’t think it was needed or smart. But running him is twice the odds of success on 4th and 2 of any other play I have seen all season. What we called was 35% odds at best and I think his odds there would have been 65% atleast. Had we used him on the 2 point conversion I think odds were about 55-58% he makes it from 3 out in that situation. Only reason to extend to 2nd OT is if you think you have a strong chance to make a 3rd OT where he would have been our advantage. Odds of getting to 3rd OT though weren’t as good as Colleto winning it in the 1st. You give it to him and give him the chance to be hero. More likely than not he’ll find a way into the endzone.

  47. What a complete collapse. Hope none of you planned to go to a bowl game because it just got kick through the uprights in overtime.

  48. “We actually get paid to do this” one of the announcers said,
Sadly, I wouldn’t take a dime to watch this horseshit!!!!
    Goodnight!

  49. 3
    2

I’m not impressed with Oregon, Stanford, or ASU, so there’s still a good chance to make a bowl. Stanford probably the best shot. Even if they make one, the entire picture is clouded for me because of Smith. Can’t stand handicap coaches. One positive about GA was he wasn’t awful in this area.

  50. 5
    1

The one time I thought Smith would gamble and he doesn’t. I would have probably bitched if he went for two and didn’t convert, but the way this game went, it may have been the best chance to escape. My 14-year-old son was screaming go for two and end this thing!

  51. 4
    1

Beat USC, WA and Utah and lose to WSU, Cal and Colorado? Go figure….next up losses to Stanford, ASU and the Sucks! Smith costs his team another win as the game should have never gone to OT. I’m tired of Smith’s and his staff’s stupidity. I’m pulling my annual $10.00 donation to the beaver football program as not enough bang for the buck!

    • 5
      1

Disagree. Defense held them to 13 in 1st half, despite the offense showing no signs of life.
Then the offense gifted Colorado a short field early in the 2nd half with that idiotic 4th down play in our own territory.

Defense wasnt great by any means, but they did a good enough job to win this and the offensive coaches did not.

    • 2
      1

CU almost had 400 yards of offense. The P-12 announcers were babbling about the Beavs improved run defense, the stats are showing 155 yards rushing for Broussard.

  52. Also how the hell did the D give up 3rd and 15 on Colorado’s TD to take the lead with 2 1/2 mins to go? Our next two recruiting classes and our transfers should be 50% D Line.

  53. Since this team isn’t a road team, do we even want to go to a bowl game we will most likely lose because this team is inept with playing on the road minus USC.

  54. Smith’s too much of a liability. I doubt we win another game this season with him at the helm. We will play down to Stanford next week.

Never said this before tonight but Smith needs to fire Tibs ASAP, and if he doesn’t do it tomorrow, Barnes needs to fire Smith and make Michalczik the interim.

  55. 1
    1

Do the Beavs ever play zone? It seems like man to man makes it easier for these young QB’s who continue to have success against Tibs suspect defense.

  56. I’m done with Tibesar as D Coordinator. Bend don’t break isn’t a scheme that wins championships. We need to go back to a 4-3 and get away from the keep everything in front of you DB play. That defense is fine if you have breaking speed to make a play, this team doesn’t have recovery breaking speed to make the play. Also, Jones got burned on a double move early in the game. So that’s lack of experience and Colorado knowing that and taking advantage.

    • 1
      1

Hasn’t the lack of speed at linebacker become more and more of a liability with teams that spread the field? I guess in 2019 Hamilcar was the speed that offset the other linebackers. Is McCartan fast? I know he’s probably out for the season. They need to recruit for it ASAP.

      • LB speed coverage wise has been a problem for about 9+ years. With that said, DB is the issue. Corner blitzes used to be used in Oregon State defenses under Banker. Not saying Banker would be better, but Banker did have us as LB U for quite a few years at one point.

  57. 1

Usman please beat Covington to at least salvage the night for me. Sucks win and Smith loses the game for the beavers to I’ll settle for a KO of CC. Put him to sleep for good…..

    Post game thoughts:
Coaching staff should be reprimanded and publicly challenged for this debacle of the last 2 weeks. I think the entire program thought they were just going to show up and get 2 wins.
This must be quite a shock for them all now. They may still luck out if Stanford starting qb is out, but more likely the young guy is mobile and will be setting Stanford records for pass completions and rushing yards etc.
Tibs can get off the bus and drive about 40 hours east and never come back, take Lindgren with him.

Baylor isn’t getting as many chances as earlier and it is showing in the results for the team and him. He doesn’t look like he is enjoying it right now. He had a nice 1st down run, came out and didn’t get back on the field for a possession in the 2nd half. Not a good look for the offense. Lowe is doing great but not it can’t be at the expense of Baylor’s touches.

Beason should not be back on the field.
Where is Gould? WHere is Lindsay? QUick outs to Harrison are gold, but only once a game ?
Defensive backs are atrocious and Grant should be off the field, horrible tackler and embarrassingly soft against the run.
Spieghts played like he was hoping not to get hurt rather than a physical beast like last year.
Dline gets zero push on pass plays, blitzers don’r come close to qb ever and whiff once he scrambles.
Lindgren only ran 1 fly sweep but to a tight end on a reverse. Horrendous play calling on anyu creativity in the run game.
It looked like Colorado had some tells, or reads on where Baylor was going, or their coaches need to play the lottery tonight because they were guessing correct each time.
JS cannot continue to give bad teams short field opportunities. Should have gone for 2 of course as well.
Nolan isn’t a D1 qb, he is missing guys wide open, and refuses to hit the check-down. Frustrating qb play makes everything much more difficult. Nolan cannot be the starter next year. I sort of hope he isn’t the starter for the rest of this year…

    • Someone said that Gould should be taking all of Flemings’ snaps. I disagree. He should be taking all of Beason’s snaps.

At least Champ doesn’t drop or fumble the ball often.

      • I can’t honestly think of a negative play from Gould this season and at least 7 or 8 negative plays/drops from Beason. Obviously the coach has an issue with him. Would not be surprised if Gould hit the transfer portal. He was a spark in the game tonight. AGAIN. Would love to hear a question from Daschel on why doesn’t get snaps.

        • 3
          1

Not to read too much into it, but doesn’t it seem like Beason has bad body language this season? Almost like he expected to be a star and he’s actually regressed.

      • I think I’m the one you were referring to, and I completely agree. My comment was just that Champ and Gould are a similar style of player, so it’s more a direct substitution. And my comment also included KR where Champ is worthless (and Gould could give a spark).

Beason has been easily our worst WR this year, and maddeningly he still is getting tons of snaps – 2nd on the team behind Bradford. Champ is just very limited in size and athleticism, BUT he’s reliable, has good hands, and might have better chemistry with Luton then anyone else on the team. He’s made some plays the last two weeks. That being said, if we’re going to play a 5’5″ dude, WHY are we lining him up outside?? Makes no sense.

Bradford, Gould, Harrison, Lindsay, Champ would be my top 5 in that order. Think I’d like Champ best as a 3rd down specialist.

        • Whatever passing game plan Lindgren comes up with is fucked. No one is getting any significant separation, besides Gould or Fleming on a drag route. It’s too predictable.

Just do what Wazzu did under Leach and make the mesh wheel combo the base play. We have the speed guys (Gould and Flemings) to run the mesh, Musgrave to run the go, and Harrison or Lindsay to run the post.

It’s all in Beason’s head right now. He was a great player for us last year, but he needs his snaps reduced significantly until he can reliably catch the ball.

          • Yeah, even on that first long pass play, which I’m sure was designed to fool Colorado, there was no separation. P-12 teams have been very disciplined in the secondary against the wide receivers. I don’t know why one wouldn’t start out the game with a couple of Baylor stretch plays and go from there. College games are long, there’s plenty of time to call a long pass play. I also noticed on some third and longs, Nolan stared down just one receiver and that receiver did not get separation, either that’s on Nolan or not great play calling.

  59. 6
    1

Regarding the defense. Is this the second straight game with zero sacks and zero turnovers? I’m not sure about the sacks, but it seems like it. Sad commentary.

  60. It’s not even worth my time typing up a game analysis and point out all the brain dead mistakes. Why should I care so much when clearly this team and coaching staff doesn’t care about winning right now.

Smith is now 0-4 with a chance to clinch bowl eligibility. The way things are going, he could be 0-7 in that department in 3 weeks.

My question is, what happens if this team actually does finish 5-7? The question is what will the university do? Not what do we as fans want, but what will they do? It almost feels like you can’t fire Smith, right? It’s possible that a move like that would make the wrong people upset (boosters, alumni, former players) whereas moves away from Riley and GA were almost unanimously accepted by most people.

I’ve seen this sentiment echoed on Twitter tonight, but it’s hard to imagine I will give this program any more of my money for the time being. Not when Tibesar is on the payroll. It doesn’t matter how this season ends, he needs to be fired. No questions asked. If Smith doesn’t have the stones to do it, Barnes should.

If this same defensive effort is displayed the next three weeks and he keeps a job, I will not attend a game until he is fired or shows he wants to be a competent D1 assistant coach. I will contact Scott Barnes or whoever I need to to tell them this as well. I’ve been to many games with teams a lot less talented than this, but I am drawing the line here.

I hope to see this program have a spine and do the right thing and fire Tibs.

Our only chance at a bowl is winning next week, in case that wasn’t obvious. But at this point, I’m fine with losing out if it means something gets changed in leadership.

    • I feel like Smith has done a good job rebuilding, getting better players, and starting to develop expectations of Bowl games which is impressive considering where Andersen left it. I give him more latitude.

I also think we caught a tough break with Gebbia getting hurt. He would make a lot of those throws that Nolan misses which would make the running game even more lethal.

But the defense needs to change. If we can’t get pressure on the QB with D Line then we need to blitz more. Roberts and Speights aren’t good in coverage anyway so send them after the QB. Both Cal and Colorado were struggling to get to 20 points most games. They have looked all world against us. Scheme needs to change or Tibs needs to go.

    • 7
      1

Didn’t Colorado fire their o-line coach a couple of weeks ago? Look at the improvement. If I remember correctly Sitake at BYU fired his d-coordinator midseason a few years back and it pretty much saved his job. When the results are not really improving with this big of a sample size something needs to happen. Remember pussy Riley wouldn’t get rid of Banker at OSU but when things got real for him at Nebraska he finally pulled the trigger (over the phone).

    • They won’t change the defense near end of the season. You make those big schematic changes after the season is over. Tibesar should change his defensive scheme for next year and if he says no, then he needs to go. I don’t blame position coaches because the players aren’t playing a pin your ears back defense. That’s not a Tibs defensive scheme.

      • Yeah, but you could fire Timmy tomorrow, make Bray the DC, and send a signal that an inability to learn, adapt, and improve are unacceptable. Bray wouldn’t change the scheme, but he could at least NOT put LBs on WRs so often, blitz, and make some line up changes. Time for Grant to sit; he’s getting by on that “best player who started out as a walk on” false narrative. Bray becomes DC tomorrow night, lets team know that players who want to start have to tackle.

Maybe OSU loses some dead money on Timid Timmy, but if the HC and AD don’t show they are serious about winning, then that Reser expansion is going to be pretty empty for this poor product. You can’t sell those expensive seats with this kind of product.

With OSU up by 4, and CU facing 3rd and 15, it was Timmy Time, and CU gets a 16 yard TD.

There is no good reason or probability that keeping Timmy is the best answer for the remainder of this season, or for next year and beyond. None.

  61. If the mods want to put up a post game thread, go for it. Else we’ll stick with this until Monday. I’m not going to be around until then.

  62. UTSA has a solid staff. If Smith wants to keep playing Russian roulette on his own 40 then he needs to realize there are options for OSU. We either win next week or Smith likely will be 0-7 with a chance to clinch a bowl spot. UTSA up 30-9 at half. Will be watching their defense in 2nd half to see if the defensive scheme is much more to my liking. Their team looks to be a legit Top 20 team at this point and have to admire how they play up to get in the national polls and rankings. Hiring away their D coordinator is something OSU should be capable of.

    • 1
      1

The state of Texas is rich with HS talent, especially on the defensive side of the ball.

I really hope someone poaches Smith this off-season and we retain Michalczik to be head coach. He is the run game coordinator and OL coach, which has been our most successful part of the team. Why wouldn’t we give him a shot? We don’t need a flashy hire to be a consistent 8-win team.

  63. 2
    2

So there could be some bitter irony here. A shitty ’18 Beaver team was Colorado’s easiest chance for bowl eligibility, but Legend Luton led that second-half comeback, and the Buffs never recovered or won another game to finish 5-7. Let’s hope the Beavs take care of business against Stanford.

  64. I really enjoyed the USC and Utah games after the past several years. I was 5 years old the last time Beavers won at USC. I also really enjoyed all the positive comments on this site, like we actually had a good team. Don’t know if they make it to a bowl this year as everyone has figured out our “identity” and made us lose it. Kind of think the OC and DC are sinking the ship and if JS pulls a Riley and supports his guys to the end, he goes down with them. Sometimes it seems that the OC/DC are watching a different game.

    • 12

OC was certainly planning a different game. Starting the game with 3 passes is inexcusable with this team and the running attack, not just Baylor either.

I think the staff is plagued by 3 elements stemming from the first year of JS:

      1) Loser mentality regarding strategy- assuming Colorado would sell out to stop the run, so never try to establish the run
      2) Gambler mentality at the wrong time- JS is trying to be aggressive like Chris Peterson but he gambles at the worst times and with very bad consequences when it goes awry
3)Defensive scheme designed to bend not break seemed to originally be installed due to the lack of talent, perhaps there is still a lack of talent, but then the coaches are culpable for not being able to recruit the right type of player for the schemes

I think what disappoints me the most as this year continues is the resistance to embracing this team’s obvious strengths. Why is the staff blinded that this team has all of the tools offensively to be a ball control, smash mouth Stanford-like version of OSU football. Yet they continue to force Nolan into passing downfield or pocket passer out of the gate. Nolan has shown his best skills to be a designed runner, passing rolling out but not a drop back pocket passer. His rating is high but he doesn’t pass the eyeball test watching him game after game, unfortunately.

The team has regressed badly, JS and staff have regressed even worse because they can’t gameplan for the 2 worst conference teams on the schedule properly. Unbelievable.

This is one of those night when I wish I had never become a Beaver fan. It is maddening to be a Beaver fan.

        • I’m gonna turn into the hulk soon. I’ve seen 11 winning seasons in 26 years of watching. I’ve seen about 149 wins and 153 losses. Endurance is ending.

I don’t even want to know the record of you old farts that have been fans since the early 70’s instead of just 1994.

  65. Gould’s usage is mystifying. Whenever he’s on the field he’s making a huge or clutch play. Unfortunately he plays like 2 snaps a game. How is he not a full time starter?

Beason has been the worst WR on the team hands-down and yet he’s still seeing the 2nd most snaps behind Bradford. Doesn’t make any sense.

Champ is small and athletically limited but great hands, high football IQ, and seems to have the best chemistry with Nolan of anyone on the team. Seems like we’re playing him in weird formations (why is a 5’5″ dude ever lining up outside??) but he should probably have a role – at least on 3rd down. Need him off KR though. Total dud there.

Harrison and Lindsay are both up and down with big plays and then drops. Bradford is our clear #1 (except for possibly Gould?), so hope he’s OK.

  66. We had to attend a wedding, dinner reception the whole deal this afternoon/evening. Seriously who in the hell gets married during football season?

I set the DVR expecting to cruise though a relaxing route, per my 41-14 prediction this morning. I just finished watching what, I believe, had to be one of the worst Beaver performances since the 80’s. I saw the same things you guys did. Reviewed the comments above, so I won’t beat a dead horse. Just don’t get it. Night…Night

PS: I hear we have a good soccer team. Is it the men’s or women’s?

  67. Don’t think this team has 1 more win in them. 2 of the teams we still have on the schedule ran for 300 yards tonight against much better defenses than ours is right now. Sadly, we threw the ball 38 times with a 52% completion rate against the 91st ranked run defense. Something tells me that despite Utah running for 300 yds and 6 touchdowns this offensive scheme will be to throw the ball yet again. They just can’t get out of their own way. The goal should be to win the game so if that means running the ball 100% of the time, then run the damn ball 100% of the time. It’s almost like the game plan offensively is to have a 50/50 split and not to actually exploit weaknesses of the opponent or play to our strengths.

4th down call early in the game and on the wrong side of the field yet again comes to bite the Beavs in the ass. Stupid decision. Personally, I wasn’t totally against the PAT to tie in OT but I’m more surprised as that seemed like the 1 time where it made complete sense to go for it and he doesn’t. Baffling.

Nice to see people finally getting off the Tibs train as it’s been a little lonely the last 3 years I’ve been saying he needs to go. Lol. Not sure anything else needs to be said there. Bad scheme. Bad preparation. Bad adjustments (if making any). Feels like the defensive players are already thinking about Christmas break and have mailed it in. I knew we were in for another stellar performance from the 1st play where the TE juked and sidestepped 3 Beavs on his way to the 20 yd gain. Watching that play I was hearing the Chris Berman “whooop” “whooop” (not sure how to spell that sound he made) as our guys kept flying past the lumbering TE.

I’m also disappointed in the complacency of a lot of the fan base. So many “golly gee what a hard fought game” or “you’re not a real fan if you criticize the team” or “well at least we’re not getting blown out anymore”. I just don’t understand it. Why don’t you want, nay, demand, better from your coaching staff? You spend money on tickets or merchandise. Most of us have spent lots of money on tuition. Or maybe you donate your time or other resources. Regardless, you have skin in the game and the complacency is why we had 28 years of losing records and on the verge of 9 years with no bowl games.

    • My response to the “at least were not getting blown out anymore” comment is that very soon they will be if they’re complacent with losing games like this. These are games where players lose faith in their coaches.

You don’t have to look further back than 2017 to see OSU completely imploding. Tibs is just as bad as Clune was then.

  68. Thank you Usman for kicking Colby Covington’s a$$. It took some of the sting out of the beavs loss at Colorado to an interior opponent. Right now I think the beavers are staring at potential 5 game losing string and another losing season…This year has just regressed back to its old losing ways. If they can turn it around the last two of three, great but I don’t see that happening. Between the horrible defense and the pathetic play calling and coaching, that’s tough for any team to overcome. If Smith isn’t careful, he’s going to gamble away his HC job as a beaver. I’ve been a strong supporter of his from the get-go but at some point you have to take a long hard look in the mirror and ask yourself, “what the Fuck was that?” I’ve reached that point as a fan and supporter of Smith but have concluded that he might not be as smart of a coach as I originally thought. His bad coaching decisions have cost the beavers at least two games this season, WSU and CO. The beavers can’t continue to give games away and expect to win..At a minimum, Smith needs to cut bait on Tibesar and the rest of the defensive coordinators and rebuild yet again. On offense, beavers need much better QB play and that starts with better evaluation of QB position. This team continues to disappoint this year and the coaches too. We must be the worst 5-4 team in the country especially on defense. Stanford and ASU certain look beatable and are at Resers but unless Smith and his staff get things turned around, I wouldn’t expect wins. I hope I’m wrong but my eyeballs tell me otherwise. Well, at least the WBB team showed some promise earlier against western Washington.

  69. Disappointing lose but not surprised. The talent especially on d and qb is not there. Nolan is ok but not great. He’s not progressing like I’d expect. Tibs takes a lot of heat but I’m not convinced there’s a lot of d coordinators that could do better with the lack of talent especially in the trenches. To complicate matters, JS has consistently made critical mistakes that have hurt his teams chances. Against Purdue, WSU, Colorado his poor decisions may have cost us. And I 100% think we should have gone for 2 in first OT. Colorado had to be relieved to see our extra point team. CU had burned their TO and I immediately thought that JS would have said to Lingren, “after we score, we’re going for 2. Have your best play ready to go.” Without a TO available, CU would have been screwed

  70. 3

People seem to be making excuses that we’re not that good, etc…well the entire league is not that good, and we should be 8-1. Think about that. With boring “conservative” coaching, we’d very likely be 8-1. Sure, we can’t know definitely that punts and properly management of 4ths would have resulted in wins, but looking at the games in retrospect, very likely. I don’t buy we don’t have the talent. We don’t have the coaching talent. The one thing Smith has done very well is bring in legit 3-star talent, so I disagree we don’t have the talent. The HC is losing the games with reckless calls. I saw this first at Nevada in 2018 and commented on it that game as something to watch because the management was so extraordinarily stupid. Sure enough that pattern continued, and I’d say last night it got even worse, because Smith now doesn’t go for two when it IS the correct move. It’s almost like he realized his stupid decision earlier in the game and was trying to self-correct there. That’s a HC way too much in his own head. Need a HC with “feel”…hard to explain what that is, but you know it when you see it, and Smith doesn’t have it.
