  1. This will be an interesting matchup between the worst offense in the conference and the worst defense in the conference. I think our offense can propel us to a win here simply because Colorado’s defense is also really bad, but our offense is good.

How did Dorrell get another HC job? He underachieved with good recruiting classes at UCLA and spent the next several years as an NFL position coach. I hope he stays around for a while.

Hey Beaver fans! Took Timmy’s Tots trick-or-treating last night! (or, ‘Twick oh Tweating’ as they say!) Boy am I tired. The tots wanted to go as a SCARY Division 1 football defense, I said “Ok! If that’s what you lil’ rascals want!” The front seven were “sacking” their candy, ” Nashon Wright went as “a no fwy zone” and little Elijah Jones said he was “fiwst stwing wock down cownew,” they were intercepting snickers bars left and right! So cute! Everybody had a good time! Made me think about changing those cushions we play (the Tots call them ‘piwwows’ in practice cause they’re so soft). We’ll see. I see the Buffs nearly scored 30 on the Ducks. Well, any more busted coverages and missed tackles, I’m blaming it on too much candy and altitude! See you next Saturday!

    #Timmy’sTots

p.s. One of the Tots accidentally called me “Coach Timid,” instead of “Coach Timmy,” hope that doesn’t stick! Ha ha!

  3. Well, I felt confident in our guys last week and predicted a win, now I’ll predict based on the garbage I saw against Cal.

24-10, Colorado tramples our offense and defense thanks to a lack of heart and coaching brain farts.

    • Might send a message. Last Saturday was year 4, game 8, of Timid Timmy’s regime, bowl eligibility attainable, and the D played like year one, pre-season, w/recruits from a previous regime.

Not a fan of Bray as a permanent solution though. Did he coach under Banker at all? If so, then I’d say he might be retained as a position coach under a new D coordinator but some other perspective would be valuable. Don’t want somebody too steeped in the Banker/Tisebar loser culture as the next D coordinator.

    • I think he would be a decent DC.

OSU would have the money to then go get another position coach, preferably a safeties coach, and let Blue Adams focus on corners.

  4. I think the Cal game will linger and the team won’t perform again. Also Colorado got a little groove going? Apparently. So I’ll say 38-24 buffs

    • I hope you are wrong but after hearing smith disappointed in the Utah start then follow that up with the crappy cal showing I’m right there with you.

Beavers get a late 48 yd FG to win it 3-2. Colorado’s two points come from a 4th down and 4 conversion attempt by Smith at the beavers own 2 yard line. Smith calls for a statute of liberty play that is stuffed by Colorado resulting in the safety. The beavers trail 2-0 with just under a minute to go and one TO remaining. The ensuing free kick from the beavers at the 20, Smith calls for an onside kick that Colorado recovers at the 28 yd line.. Beavers defense holds and forces an 18 yd FG attempt by Colorado and the FG is wide right. Beavers final drive is successful as Smith is 4th and 10 from the beavers 28 and Smith calls for the ever popular fumblerooskie. The beavers catch Colorado’s defense by surprise and OSU right guard picks up the ball and rambles for a 72 yd score but there is an illegal block in the back on the 21 yd line to negate the TD run..3 consecutive passes into the ending by Colletto fall incomplete. Due to an injury, the beavers have a change in kickers and bring in of all players…yes, you probably guessed it….Gebbia for his first ever FG attempt. Gebbia kicked extra points in PeeWee football so he is confident he can hit the game winner. Gebbia amazingly gets off a pretty darned good kick but looks well short but at the last moment a strong gust of wind aided by the high altitude carries the ball just enough to hit the crossbar and dribbles over for the win. The over 8,000 Colorado fans in attendance are stunned by the loss. Smith in the post game presser was asked about using Gebbia for the game winning FG and his response was very short and to the point, “I thought it was a neat deal for Gebbia.” As a fan, it’s hard to argue with that kind of logic. Beavers are now in line to play in the inaugural Dunkin Donuts sponsored by Rice Kristie’s Bowl Game slotted in prime time just before the national championship game. The game will be played in McMinnville at the home of the Linfield Wildcats. Two cans of food will get you a reserved seat ticket for the big game. Go beavers. The opponent will come from the FCS division. An invitation to FCS powerhouse Sacramento State will be extended bit it appears the beavers might decline if SS accepts. I guess we all remember what happened the last time the beavers played SS. Go beavers…

    • There was just slightly under 4 minutes in the game when beavers took the final possession. Apparently, there was a malfunction with the game clock in my original play by play call. Lol

      • Smith used back to back timeouts to design the statute of liberty call. He made several personnel changes before settling on that play.. Mike Parker nearly had a coronary as he commented, “I don’t know what Smith is doing, but he apparently doesn’t either.” in the end, the beavers are still headed to the inaugural Dunkin Donuts sponsored by Rice Kristie’s Bowl Game…another neat deal for the beavers

  6. Yeah so I was at the duck vs Colorado game last week and the buffs are horrendous. Worst pac 12 team I have seen since Anderson left town. Almost all their points were in garbage time and they had 9 false starts. It was pathetic. Their offense is their pretty good qb running for his life and playing sandlot ball.

If we lose to them it may be the end of my fandom, a beaver can only take so much misery. Also watching two teams I don’t care about made me realize that football has gotten boring, I just love the beavs.

    • I thought their QB, Lewis, looked pretty good for a freshman. Not his fault the team had mutiple false starts. But he was good at extending plays with his legs and threw a nice looking ball. I could see him being one of the better pac12 QBs in a couple of years, if they can get some quality guys around him. Broussard ran pretty well too.

“ their QB, Lewis, looked pretty good for a freshman…good at extending plays with his legs and threw a nice looking ball.”

        Uh oh.

This game ought to be boring itself. Beavs should win, but it’s a bad D against a bad team overall. Anybody who bothers watching it should be able to shut it off by mid-Q3 at the latest, knowing it a Beavs win. If it’s a loss it’ll be less boring because of the frustration and disappointment. Even a close “exciting” win should be disappointing, because it shouldn’t be close.

My suggestion is to not watch it, but go do something and watch condensed highlights.

      • He was the only player that was any good. Zero support by the line or receivers though. Dude made 6 tacklers on one play and drilled the receiver in the numbers, across his body on the run, and the receiver dropped it.

  7. In the immortal words of Bartles and Jaymes, thank you for your support. Sorry no shitty wine coolers for y’all.

Re: Colorado, if the beavs can’t/don’t beat the bison, they have no business going to a bowl game, aside from some back handed pride moment and some more experience for the players.

Beavs by 10, so it is written, so it shall be done

  8. Colorado offensive line rankings:

T- two starters rank #25 and #26 in the PAC-12. No team has a worse pair.
G- two starters rank #12 and #18 in the PAC-12. Only two teams have a worse pair.
C- ranked #8 in the conference

Overall, they have the #11 OL in the PAC-12. If Timmy’s Tots can’t get a few sacks against CU, I don’t know what to say.

So our defense has been the source of the Beavs demise for a number of years now. How do we get Riley Jr to make a DC change? We have better athletes this year but still same problems.

  10. Cal had a once in a lifetime fluke game with zero turnovers and zero penalties, with a gifted butt fumble call to start the game….back to the mean….
    Beavs 41 – Buffs 32

  11. I think a lot of Beaver fans got a little ahead of themselves hoping the Beavs had jumped from bottom of the Pac12 to top tier in a couple years. In reality, they’re middle of the Pac, maybe upper middle with the help of a few teams that have trended downward. That’s still progress and consistent with realistic expectations. But Smith needs to realize that they will remain in the middle of the Pac if they don’t make significant improvements on defense. We’ll see how serious he is about “we ain’t done yet!”. If he doesn’t make any changes in the off-season then he can expect similar results next year.

Also, I expect the game against Colorado to be close. Our defense will be gassed in the second half and since Nolan’s passes tend to be high, he’ll really be sailing them in Boulder. If Smith and Lindgren continue passing unnecessarily, it will bite them in the ass.

    • Agree. There were people talking about the rose bowl and being mad that the Beavs blew it when they lost at wazzu after only two conference games.

    • Agree. Orange colored glasses and high hopes blinded many to the obvious fact that this team has significant deficiencies. At 5-3, I think we’re ahead of schedule. Also agree, Colorado won’t be a cake walk. We’re just not good enough along the defensive front and at QB position yet. Get off the field in 3rd down has more to do with our lack of talent along the D line than Tibs IMO… but still not a Tibs fan

  12. Just watched the highlights again. A few numbers, no names, of guys on defense that looked to be moving in quicksand or out of position regularly on third downs: 36, 21, 45, 34. I don’t know what these guys were doing to help based on the effort they show on replay on third downs. The linebackers were pretty much useless on any 3rd and long situation. At this point, Tibs should be changing to a full blitz package and press man coverage. If lbs can’t cover in 8 man drop with 3 linemen rushing, then create the pressure and take the risk. I’d say of the half the 3rd down situations, a late blitzer didn’t even get within 10 feet of Garbers.
Garbers is a bad qb under max pressure, but the game-plan was to play an 8 man zone and give him time to throw I guess, the worst way to approach a 6 yr senior qb.
A conservative bend but don’t break and soft 8 man zone don’t become ideal against an experienced qb.

    • I’ve been saying this ever since WSU. That 3 man rush is absolutely brutal. Dropping 8 is setting ourselves up to fail. Plain and simple. We get 0 pressure rushing 3 and we can’t cover well. Our LBs are horrible in coverage.

With the personnel that we have, we need to be way more blitz heavy. If our LBs aren’t going to be pass rushing they need to be off the field.

34 and 36 are Roberts and Speights. 21 is Hardge (S pressed into service with Julian out). 45 is Saluni (another young LB).

        • I think Grant was the nickel corner, but he moved to replace Julian’s S spot with Hardge replacing him. Could be wrong though, wish we published meaningful depth charts.

      • Hm, usually have been pleased w/ Roberts & Speights; perhaps a bad game in general? Neither are coverage linebackers though.

I haven’t been watching player statistics as close this season, so don’t know how well these two are doing compared to a season or two back.

  13. 100-50 not going to happen.. It’s an exhibition and im pretty sure your going to see the whole roster play.. try different lineups and such to see what works.. if your basing your expectations on a 100-50 score your going to be disappointed..

    • “ Immediately after the loss to the Golden Bears, Smith gave a lot of credit to his team’s opponent for playing a great game and outperforming the Beavers in multiple areas.

Upon watching the film from Saturday, that sentiment remained the same. California simply played the better game.
“I thought Cal played really well,” he said on Monday. “We really just got beat. The quarterback executed for them. Defensively, they created some turnovers and stops. They created the game-changing play on special teams. I give those guys credit again.”

    • “One of the aspects of the defense that the Beavers’ staff will work on ahead of the matchup against the Buffaloes is avoiding mismatches.

“An example was the touchdown throw,” Smith said. “We’ve got a receiver getting covered by Avery Roberts, which again was a great call (by Cal). Defensively we were zone pressuring, matching up Avery on the receiver. That’s not a great matchup. Better play call by Cal, not as good by us.”

      • Yep. And in every game on every opposing team’s third down everyone of us sits there with fingers, legs, and balls crossed hoping that this time we can actually get a stop. Third downs as a beaver fan when our defense is on the field are gut wrenching.

    • I think daschel reads the blog. I have been harping on the third down defense for at least two years and he’s been on that story for a bit this year.

      • Well it was a huge problem last year along with run D and turnovers. They had made improvements on the latter 2 until the last 2 games. He had mentioned it quite a bit last year too. It was a pretty obvious problem that they were supposed to try and figure out. It seems like now the fact is that they just can’t.

Oh yeah. Lake would fix OSU’s defensive problems in a season.

Still, reminds me of Cory Hall’s “fuck the ducks” chant, and we passed on retaining him. That was a mistake

        • If you want an emotion focused staff, then JS isn’t your HC.
Sure, emotion is necessary but smarts count for a lot too.

It doesn’t really take much smarts though, to see the 3rd down problem and the poor use of Avery in those spots. JS isn’t dumb, just slow to get into Tibs area. Too slow.

            1

I feel like there has to be some balance though. Maybe it would be beneficial to bring in a little bit more emotional motivation in for the defense?

          • “Just bring in change… how ever that looks!”
An understandable position, change for change sake…….but it’s not unusual at all for teams/organizations to get burned by that approach.

Is there anything in Smith’s history to indicate he’d ever pick, as a coordinator, someone at the other end of the spectrum? (the spectrum spanning from quietly competitive, cerebral, little visible emotion all the way to lots of visible emotion, reactive to the short term)

I see Smith as competitive, but more of a builder and long term thinker. Wonder if he’s more likely to have vocal guys as position coaches (Blue/Bray?) rather than coordinators. I suspect (hope) he’s had some serious discussions with Tibs, probably not as early as he should have.

Thoughts? Insights from someone with connections to team members?

          • I think emotional coaches work better on the defensive side of the ball than offense. You need aggression and fire to be good on defense. Offense is more calculated and composure.

I’m sure Smith has been talking to Tibs. Smith protects his players and coaches in front of the media so we aren’t likely to hear about his displeasure and what he’s actually thinking. He tends to take the blame for things in front of the media and that gets you respect from players and coaches.

          • This feels like one of those situations where we all want to see what’s behind door #2, and when it finally happens we all go “oh, it was as good as it gets.” Just seems like Tibs can’t be clueless about third down and still have a job.

    • I’m sure there’s a chance, and it wouldnt make sense to stop recruiting one of your top targets even if he’s 110% committed somewhere. There’s always a chance till signing day is over. And even after that there’s plenty more opportunities to get a guy to transfer

  14. Depth chart: Fleming still going to return kicks, Austin looks ahead of Jones…Lindsey/Bradford/Beason…wasn’t Beason the one w/the drops?

    • Link? And yes Beason’s been a disaster this year. Most snaps of any WR on the team. Not open often, pretty sure more drops than catches (two became picks) … really really bad.

Lindsay’s has some drops too but I think he’s our best WR at getting open. We should be playing Bradford/Gould/Harrison with some Lindsay mixed in (but not on 3rd down).

Beason can try again next fall camp.

      • Agree Beason has been awful and adjustments should be made. Aside from his supposed great camp he’s shown nothing that deserves starting. I think it’s a little premature to say that Gould should be starting over Lindsay. He just has such a little sample size and most of that were runs outside of a game vs. A bad Hawaii team. I think he has earned more time tho and if he continues to play like he has when he’s had a chance I wouldn’t mind him sliding into a starting spot. Probably over Harrison at this point tho. Lindsay has been the most explosive of all the receivers.

        • Lindsay’s been the most explosive but he’s had some drops… kind of a mixed bag imo. Hard to trust on 3rd down.

Gould had been excellent on very limited reps. He had a huge, clutch conversion on 3rd and long (17?) vs Washington during our last scoring drive. I’m not sure why he’s not on the field more but he has yet to show me a reason why he doesn’t belong there.

I’m kinda of hoping that Oregon wins out and remains at #4 and gets matched up against Georgia.. That would be an epic a$$ raping. On the other hand, I don’t think Oregon wins out and will lose to either WSU or Utah. I just don’t think that the beavers can beat the ducks this year but I hope I’m wrong…it would be great to see the beavers knock the ducks out of the playoffs but I just don’t see that happening.

    • 10
      1

I really don’t want Oregon winning out. If they do, there’s no way OSU gets fair calls in the CW. I’d rather see UO lose to UW, Utah, and even WSU, be out out it, and OSU go in and win the CW.

    • 3
      1

I would like them to lose all of their remaining games and show the nation that their chance at being a national contender left with chip. They backed into a bs conference championship last year and I don’t want to see the same this year.

Beavs can definitely win this year but the good Beavs need to show up. Nolan and the team are very streaky.

  16. Curious what some of you QB film evaluators think of this kid?
Dom Montiel out of Marshfield HS(Coos Bay). Same school as Cory Stover, I believe.
He came into the season with a little buzz over the Summer and I just now am following up to see how his season is going.
Has been putting up pretty big numbers this year and Marshfield is currently undefeated. Makes some pretty insane throws and has a cannon for an arm. He scrambles on mearly every play and is pretty creative with some of his throws. If nothing else, he’s entertaining to watch.

    http://www.hudl.com/v/2GG2jP

    • What year is he? He definitely has an arm but it’s 5a level and Oregon is not a hotbed for FB talent. Do you know how big this kid is. If he’s 6′ or taller, probably worth a look and definitely puts up big #s, Derek Anderson also came from a lower division school in Oregon, scapoose I think, and he turned out to be a pretty good QB.

        • His HUDL says 6’2 190, the 247 profile says 6’3 185lbs. So somewhere in that range.

          Stats so far this season:
          9-0 record
          2,456 yards (273 ypg)
          37 passing tds
          3 rushing tds
          152-230(66%)
          6 INTs

          • With that size and arm strength, he’s worth a shot…mechanics can always be refined with the right QB coach…remember that Derek Anderson had some mechanics issues too but had the arm strength and size.

          • Also, a player with winning experience and mentality and extreme competivieness are good additions to a program that’s been losing for several years. I don’t mind all the crazy arm angles because he’s trying to make something happen and he’s competing and winning. 37:6 is a plenty good ratio.

    • 3
      2

Throws from some crazy angles he won’t be able to get away with in DI most of the time…decent size, mobility, good arm. I’d say offer him, and worst he ends up on the three deep. Or WSU will and he’ll beat the beavers as a freshman….

    • He’s definitely got good arm strength with the ability to side arm it with a flick of the wrist. Looks pretty accurate but they’re highlights so it could be misleading. Great TD to int ratio and good size. Wouldn’t call him fast but maybe Gebbia speed or slightly faster but pretty quick and agile. Looks pretty raw but seems to have a playmaker kind of ability about him with the ability to make unorthodox throws and plays. Does he have any offers yet? I would say he’s definitely at least worth a PWO.

      • 1
        1

Portland State and Western Oregon are all I know about so far. Marshfield is so out of the way, hard to say if he’s just overlooked or if that is about the level he would play in college.
4.0 student as well, so grades arent an issue

    • The good – He has great touch, throws it to where his guy can get it. Can throw from multiple arm slots. It’s good arm strength which would get better bc his mechanics are not great.

not so great – while he can run away from the high school guys, he’d be a pocket passer at the next level. Won’t be able to extend plays like he does now. Level of competition certainly makes him look better.

He’d be a project and worth a walk on offer. The big question is what’s his ceiling? Not sure any team is willing to use a scholarship on him and wait 3-4 years to see what happens. He’d be a pretty good FCS player if he goes that route.

    • Has some gifts and some severe need of a good qb coach. Really strong arm, can throw from many angles. Decent touch and obviously can move.

Really needs to work on mechanics, reading the defense (averaging 6 seconds before decision in video), and what throws to make. Quite a few of those throws would be knocked down or intercepted at FBS level.

I think he could be great if he’s willing to sit and learn for 2-3 years in a good program.

  17. Anybody seeing any definitive status for Colorado LB Nate Landman for this weekend? He sat out last week vs Oregon and their defense definitely took a hit. Saw he was listed as “doubtful” vs Oregon State this week. Beavs should be able to put up pretty big offensive numbers this week if he’s out, which should help hide the Beaver defensive lapses

    • Same as you – saw he was “doubtful” per their HC. Mentioned wanting to be cautious as he has a promising NFL career ahead of him. Another OLB is out who seems like a good player for them as well.

She silt will return at WR for them this week. He was suspended due to a violation of team rules.

    • One obvious difference for the Buffs was the absence of inside linebacker Nate Landman. The All-American candidate was injured in a 26-3 loss to California on Oct. 23 and it’s unclear if he will return this season.

Head coach Karl Dorrell said Landman, a senior, is feeling better, but the future is a consideration, as well. Landman is hoping to get selected in the NFL Draft next spring and may not want to risk further injury by playing in a season that has derailed for the Buffs.

“We want to do what’s best for Nate,” Dorrell said. “He has a potential career beyond here, so I want to make sure that when he’s ready to play, he’s ready to play.”

    • Seeing what you’re seeing. “Soft tissue” injury to the lower leg, coach wants to hold him out until healthy, but says Landman would play with one arm if he could. I’m going with: he plays. Also, CO gets WR Shenault back from suspension.

        • Never mind Alic Baldwin I think you’re referring too. I don’t think smashing a car into someone while your drunk is quite the same, but to each their own

          • 5
            3

Being in control of a firearm that kills someone and wounds another qualifies. Regardless of how many people may have touched the weapon, it was not checked by the person who pulled the trigger.

          • I wonder what standard protocol is? Do most actors double check the gun if they are handed it and told it is either cold or loaded with blanks? I think that will ultimately determine if Baldwin is liable as the law typically relies on what a reasonable person would do.

          • I’ve been around and owned guns since I was a kid, I’ve never touched one that i didnt personally inspect for a live round, even after watching someone UNLOAD it. OCD isn’t just for lunatics

          • 1
            2

People that aren’t familiar with guns aren’t likely to know basic gun safety rules…seems obvious to you but that’s your background. Non-gun people with guns are very scary – out of pure ignorance.

Can’t imagine he’d be held liable. Only exception I can think of is if the movie held a gun safety training course that included him and laid out his responsibilities.

          • 2
            1

Ruggs is in a whole different universe of fault in my opinion. Flagrant, willfully reckless behavior with so many options available to him.

And I highly, highly doubt that actors are ever held responsible for accidents with props or equipment that they use. That’s why they have equipment teams with experts and professionals. If he just randomly grabbed it off a table and pointed it at someone and pulled the trigger that would be one thing, but failing to verify that it wasn’t loaded before using it like the scene called for? No way. No way they’d trust a rando actor to be safe, no way they’d hold them responsible.

          • This post is pure ignorance! It’s obvious that either you’ve never had firearms training or you don’t think it’s important enough.

          • Huh? CJ, are you saying my post is ignorance? In what way?

I grew up around guns. I am scrupulously careful with them, to a fault. I’ve also seen how non gun people act around guns, and they scare the crap out of me. Basic firearm safety rules are really ingrained for you and for me, but however obvious they may seem my experience tells me they are just not obvious for people that don’t have gun backgrounds. They don’t take them seriously. They treat them like toys. And most commonly, they just assume they’re not loaded.

Hence, I would never ever ever as a movie producer trust some random Hollywood actor to be safe with a weapon. Even if I put them through training I wouldn’t trust them. I would put the onus on my people that I trust.

          • 1000%, that’s what every person should do. Should is the key word. Point is that if you’re not a gun person, you probably don’t think to do any of those things. Out of ignorance, out of forgetfulness, out of complacence…I’ve seen it many times.

Again, non gun people with guns scare the crap out of me.

    • He was only going 156 with a bac of .16, we were all kids once, right?

      Fuck that guy.

As a raider fan I so wanted them to take lamb that year and instead they took this pos.

      Sad for the victims family.

  18. Men’s basketball xfer Marial Chol out indefinitely with academic issues. Guess it was a known issue when we pursued him. Might not play this year at all. Off to a good start!

    • It’s an odd thing as tinkles teams rarely if ever have academic issues.

It is a big loss as there is no other center on the team. Other front court guys will get looks now.

      • Yeah, we have the same front court we had last year. Marial wasn’t going to be healthy the first half of the year anyway, so this gives him time to get 100%.

        • Is he still injured? Sounded like he was practicing but maybe I was misinterpreting. Wasn’t expecting a ton anyway as he only played 28 games in 2 years. Avg like 6 min a game but can never have enough bigs.

          • He’s practicing in a limited capacity as of a month ago. Eggers wrote he wasn’t 100% and was still recovering. Everything from WT has indicated he wasn’t expected to play anything close to significant minutes in the first half of the season, if at all.

He wasn’t brought in as a savior, he was brought in as a high-risk, high-reward project.

  19. What are people’s thoughts on Rocky Long as potential DC? He was the only good coach we had during the Pettibone era. He is currently DC at UNM after being HC at both UNM and SDSU. He is a bit old at 71, but he defenses always seemed to play agressive which is the total opposite of what Tibs like to do with his schemes.

  20. Caught a little of the cal replay. It just seems like Nolan makes poor pre snap reads and is easily fooled. On the Beason throw and interception the guy hit Beason’s arm early and that’s why it was tipped. It should have never been thrown and was forced tho. It looked like they rolled the coverage to that side. QT was open about 2 yards short of the first and probably would’ve been able to get it and if not would’ve been 4th and 1ish. Lindsay also came open behind him for the first. He needs to make better reads and decisions when to throw it when to run and when to throw it away. Nolan will probably have a bounce back game against CU and leave is continuing to guess what kind of game we’ll get out of him.

The fact is, there’s really no other option at this point. Gebbia isn’t healthy and Noyer isn’t good. Vidlak has been deemed too small or too unfamiliar with the playbook.

This is Nolan’s team through year end.

    • Predetermining where he is going t throw it has been a killer all year. Any qb guys here know what changed in the second half of the Utah game? He couldn’t do much the first half but the second half he had decent numbers. Maybe he started looking off defenders to get guys wide open I don’t know.

  21. Gary Payton ii had himself a game tonight. Lots of love from the announcers. He made the warriors roster as basically the last man. Hope this performance gets him off that bubble and make some big dollars.

  22. 11

Basketball recruiting news which could be nothing, could be something: Beavs made Lamar Washington’s top 5.

He’s the top in-state recruit in the class of 2022 (though he moved to Compass prep in AZ for his senior year). 6’4, also a top LB recruit in football, averaged an insane 31.2 points, 10.3 rebounds, 5.1 assists and 2.2 steals per game in his last season.

  23. Catching up on some news from the Texas Longhorns staff over the weekend. Sounds like Sark’s special teams coach, Jeff Banks, had a Halloween incident at his house where a pet monkey bit a trick or treating kid, to the point where it’s jaws had to be pried off the kid’s arm.
But the story gets better. Apparently he has this monkey at his house because Banks left his wife and kids recently to start a relationship with a stripper with the stage name “Pole Assassin”, and the pet monkey is part of her act.

And then some former 247 analyst from the TexasA&M site posted this screenshot from a couple years back of Banks drunk texting him one night, thinking he was some side piece he was trying to hook up a booty call with.

Always good times on Sark’s staff

  24. Been awhile since i had a gut bomb.
I’m going with 2022 CB Edward Rhambo to the Beavs. Was just offered this week. Doesn’t really have any comporable offers and doesnt have a 247/Rivals profile(at least i dont think he does)
Should be visiting at one of the remaining home games although not sure which one yet.

  25. Hey, Marquez Beason has finally entered the portal. Not sure if the Beavs will still pursue him, but fits a need since we’re looking for transfer/JUCO CBs. But he had Illinois move him to WR last season so maybe CB isnt part of his plans anymore.
Also has had injury issues which have prevented him from getting consistent playing time the past 3 seasons.

  26. After last weeks game, we’re going to make CO look like a top25 team! I figure we win 2 of the last 4, somehow. We used to play well on the road and suck at home, that kind of got flipped this year. So I figure we end up at 7-5 and back into a bowl game: Sun Bowl in El Paso – with another president kicking the bucket and the funeral blacking out 3/4’s of the game….. with the score being 3-0.

That’s my prediction and I hope I’m wrong!

  27. Tinkle and crew pissing into the wind against Sain Martin’s. How the heck are we going to lose a Season exhibition opener after making the Elite 8? Only Oregon State.

    • Not too worried about an exhibition. St Martin’s shot lights out; 15-30 from 3. Lucas having 0 points on 0-5 shooting does concern me because he’s a difference maker.

I will be shocked if they lose to Portland State.

      • Was tied with 25 seconds left when OSU turned it over and St.Matin’s got to the free throw line. Their guy missed both and Davis made a 3 for OSU with 2 seconds left. Hunt steals in bound pass and Beavs win a scare fest 83-80. Not off to a good start. Have concern going into season opener vs PSU.

        • After one game, an exhibition at that, and you’re worried already? As I recall, the beavers were 11-11 late in the season last year and got hot at the right time. The season is a marathon not a sprint. If that was the tenth game of the season, I’d still have the same opinion…Teams except blue chip teams run hot and cold for the most part to let’s let the season develop before jumping to any major criticism.

  28. Can’t get too worked up about an exhibition game that saw us go 12 deep in minutes played, and deep in the bench in the first half. 8 guys have double digit minutes. Lucas and Silva played half the minutes they averaged last season and combined to go 0-6… doubt that happens in a game this season
It is a glorified practice. Sure, stuff to take away, but lets not pretend like our starters went out and got rocked or we played a starting line up in the first half and only subbed late. Besides, they closed late.

  29. I certainly hope that Usman kicks the piss out of Colby Covington in their sequel this Saturday night. CC, an OSU wrestling great, but most importantly, he’s even a greater prick. On the other hand, Usman is a very humble man that that doesn’t rely on badass attitude. CC can take his greater than thou attitude and shove it.

    • Haha! You played right into his schtick. He plays a role on TV. If you ever met in person you’d have different view. And if you think Usman is not an actor, you really are buying what he is selling. Humble is not a word I would ever use to describe that man.

      • I understand his schtick and his on camera persona and he’s still an A hole. I understand they have to promote the fight to generate ticket sales but I just don’t like the guy. His first loss to Usman he wouldn’t give usman any credit but just whined about premature stoppage which he said he was easily winning until his lameass got knocked to the canvas forcing the stoppage.

        • Stoppages make a difference when your strength is cardio. Don’t you think Usman got some benefit when he got those breaks? He admitted that the “low blow” was him anticipating pain that never happened lol… his words at 11:42: https://youtu.be/vG3REG_RMpc Usman is fake and it’s trying to appear as real. That’s bothers me more than someone who is open about their act.

  30. This has been a frustrating season with missed opportunities, but this coaching staff has some overdue victories to end losing streaks to conference foes. UO last year, USC, UW, and Utah this year.

What’s your favorite victory of those? The CW is an easy one, but I’d probably go with USC and a LONG overdue victory down there. Seeing Baylor establish himself against all of those highly ranked USC recruits, overcoming all the BS calls (three D holding calls in a row?), the creative play calling (when will see that TD play call to TQ again?), Nolan making some nice runs and throws, INTS by Wright, Colleto.

Hopefully this Saturday is an in-control win against CU, then they finally break through and defeat Stanford to add to the list.

    • CW is an easy one.
After that I’d go with the win over Utah simply because of it’s significance in the standings and will look even more impressive after the Utes whip quack.
As for Stanford, it’s critical that the “good” Beavs show up to keep the PAC North within reach.

  31. My take on the Buffs…
This should be a victory if JS does not outsmart himself. My Gophers delivered a 30-0 beat down of the Buffs in Boulder in mid September.
The recipe was a determined run game with selected shots in the passing game. CU’s run D was pretty bad and their line was totally dominated by our O line.
Both Rodent teams are built the same with very good O Lines. Gophers ran all over them with their All American RB out with an injury and ended up playing the second through sixth string backs and all were effective.
Beav’s need to play complimentary football. D needs help by being kept on the sidelines with ball control offense. If JS stays the course with the run game we should be able to put them away comfortably in the second half after the O line wears them down. Go Beav’s!

    • First i’d hear of this. Texted my buddy just now cause his son just started at UofO this year. Said it was at a different dorm, but the guy of the couple who were kidnapped are his son’s good friend from HS. Glad everybody came out of it ok, what a nightmare

  32. PHIL STEELE REPORT:

In the last meeting (‘18), Colorado led 31-3 3Q but matched their biggest blown lead in school history as OSU rallied with a TD with :29 left to force OT and win 41-34 in OT. The Beavers are in their 2nd straight road game and traveling to altitude. Those are the only real positives for Colorado. Colorado was picked last in the South and opened the season just 2-5 with only a close loss by 3 to Texas A&M and the wins were vs NColorado and Arizona. Last week CU was without AA LB Landman. Oregon scored TD’s on first 4 poss then a 27 yd FG at :00 and led 21-0 then 31-14 H. OU open 2H with 2 TD’s to lead 45-14 but CU went 67/17 and after an int 65/9 for TD’s 45-29 6:03 left. Oregon recover onside and go 46/8 for TD :40 left and won 52-29 at home with 568-341 yd edge. Oregon St was picked last in the North but opened up 5-2 SU including impressive upsets of USC, Washington and Utah. Their first loss was vs Purdue with Sam Noyer at QB but they switched to Chance Nolan after that and his only loss was a close one at Wash St. Last week OSU had 3 TO’s and had a punt blkd vs them. They fumbled on first play and Cal 22/8 TD. Down 17-3 OSU 72/7 TD :55 17-10 H with 11-10 FD edge. Cal open 3Q
TD and 39/8 FG 24-10. OSU 70/7 TD but Cal blk punt 38 yd TD pass next play 31-17. OSU 75/6 TD and 2 pt 31-25. Cal 75/11 TD 5:36 left 39-25. OSU deep pass int’d and Cal 74/11/5:19 run out clock. OSU
can pound the rock and is rushing for 253 (5.8) in Pac 12 play and the Buffs are allowing 196 (5.6). Colorado is putting up just 19 ppg and 260 ypg total offense in Pac 12 play. My AGG has Oregon St by
11.7. The Beavers are just 1-6 ATS as an AF the last 11 years. Sam Noyer’s presence does give Oregon St some intel on the Colorado players. I thought Oregon St would beat Cal last week so I am a
little down on them but they should be able to run the ball and get a solid road win.

  33. Beavs 42-31. We still can get off the field but our running game should carry us to victory. 6-3 and bowl eligible would be nice.

  34. Tinkle in the GT on the exhibition which bothered some here::
“In my estimation it couldn’t have gone better for us,”…“They came in here and played their tails off, gave us all we wanted. We showed some early signs of getting off page a little bit, not playing with the amount of urgency that the Beavers play with. But then we found a way to pull it out in the end, had some guys really step up.”

    • “Oregon: $16.5M. Thank goodness for Nike. Showing Mike Bellotti and Mark Helfrich the door cost the Ducks more than $12 million.”

      Drilling down in OSU:

“OSU: Craig Robinson: $3.8 million – In Robinson’s six seasons in Corvallis, his teams were never invited to the NIT, let alone the NCAA tournament, and he was fired in 2014 after a 16-16 season. The Beavers went 94-105 during his tenure.

$1.2M LaVonda Wagner Basketball (W) head coach
$473K Kevin Clune Football assistant coach
$414K T.J. Woods Football assistant coach
$347K Kevin McGiven Football assistant coach
$345K Rod Perry Basketball (M) assistant coach
$310K John Garrett Football assistant coach”

And no surprise the SEC has the most dead money, $123M to dismissed football coaches. Pac 12 second at $85.3M.

“The financial records did not include payments for many of the coaches who were fired during or after the 2020 football and 2020-21 basketball seasons. In football alone, FBS schools committed another $107.6 million in severance pay before mitigation to fired coaches and their staffs in 2020.”

  35. 11

OSU Men’s Soccer secure at least a share of the PAC-12 Title:

“The No. 2 Oregon State men’s soccer team edged past San Diego State, 1-0, in San Diego, Calif. to clinch a share of the Pac-12 title on Thursday. The Beavers improve to 12-1-2 (7-0-1 Pac-12) on the season. Earlier in the season, the Beavers shutout the No. 13 Aztecs, 2-0, in Corvallis.

The Beavers will have the opportunity to claim the title outright in their forthcoming games against UCLA and Washington.”

Be sure and support OSU alum Colby Covington, for his UFC title fight tomorrow night. He represents us well ;). He’s a +250 underdog, so money to be had when he comes away with the title.

  37. It’s great to hear everyone giving up on the basketball team already. Just like last year, I was so happy that I kept following them. It ended up being a very fun season. Patience is a virtue! Especially when you are an OSU fan.

    • It’s a bad look, but the sky isn’t falling. If anything hopefully it’s a wake up call. I like that Davis hit the clutch shot. If he’s confident to start the season and things are clicking, that bodes well.

    • 3
      2

It was an exhibition. There are no takeaways other than it was good to get the team some run in a game setting before the season starts and no injuries.

      • Haha! It was just like Groundhog Day… same thing I heard last year until February came around. The team isn’t going anywhere, fire Tinkle, etc. It’s good to hear there is still some supporters out there. Most of the negative comments last year were from folks who watched one bad game and never watched again. There is plenty to criticize but please at least watch more than one game if you do.

    • There are many examples of D-1 teams falling flat in their exhibitions against inferior opponents…Syracuse/LeMoyne comes to mind. Not to mention, the Beavs getting shellacked by Western Oregon a few years back and still having a surprisingly successful season. It takes time to jell. I am genuinely concerned that ET is not going to be as easy to replace as some think. He had a unique skill set. I wish he would have stayed one more year and earned his third Ph.D. or whatever. This team with ET would have been a contender!

  38. Reminder to select your pickem games. 1 game tonight.
Also, it’s sad that the #4 team in the country is only a 6.5 favorite vs UW.

    • Kinda unreliable but it’s an attempt to break up rb vs OLine in the run game. As far as I understand it’s how many yards a rb gets before he has to make a move or makes contact. There’s also an interpretation that it’s how far the OLine pushes on each play. Both have problems.

  39. Still early but Utah running all over Tree, bodes well for Beavs, I think.

Actually, the scheds for quack and the Beavs really seem to favor Beavs right now; we will be facing ASU and tree both of which look much weaker than at the start of the season. And quack will face Utah, along with WSU, you might say they both look stronger than earlier.

  40. Utah currently leading 35-0 at Stanford with still some time left first half. 403 total yards so far in the first half for Utah with 323 rushing. If I see us throw more than 15 times next weekend, we’re doing something wrong.

  41. Infrastructure Bill is on Biden’s desk. If you haven’t gotten in on any of the stocks that will be booming with lucrative federal contracts you might want to take a peak. Major items in the bill.

    Roads and Bridges
Transit (busses, railways and such to low/zero emissions)
    Water and Waste Water
    Airports
    Internet Access
    Electric Charging Stations
    Electric Grid (super vital)

Holler if you see any good companies poised to grab a contracts.

    • Sounds like Caterpillar. I bought Nucor at $39 during the pandemic…been a great buy, and still super cheap despite the huge run up. Southern Copper and Freeport could catch bids, too. Already have EV tailwinds, but this should add to that. I like TAN and FAN for renewable plays…too hard to pick winners so it’s the best method imo.

      • Nucor is a neat story because they’ve established themselves as the biggest American steel producer by going all in on recycling scrap metal, whereas Portland-based Schnitzer mostly just sells it to Asia.

    • 6
      8

Yep, what’s a couple trillion more $ made up out of thin air – I really feel for you kids. It will be hard for some of these ‘federal’ contractors to fulfill any of these contracts when they can’t supply the workforce. Let’s go Brandon!

    • You can’t even get people to work at Chipotle for $19/hr. How are they going to find people to work on these projects?

      I’m predicting major budget overruns.

  42. Did anyone know that Drew Eubanks is starting for the Spurs? Shocker.

I like GP2 fitting into the Warriors rotation. He will excel as the lockdown off guard for Curry. And he actually is more athletic than most guys on their roster. SHould stick for a nice run with them.

    • Another efficient night:

      G. Payton II 17:33 17 PTS 7-10 FG 1-3 3PT 2-2FT 2 ORB, 4 DRB 3AST 0 TO 1STL

“Payton, gaining a bigger role in the Warriors’ rotation, had seven points in the third and a handful of crowd-pleasing dunks on the night.”

  43. 2
    1

Note in the twitter feed today’s gameday graphic prominently features Colleto.

Utah with a ridiculous 441 net yards rushing in their 52-7 beatdown of Stanford. Utah gets another warm up game against UA before hosting Oregon. I actually find myself rooting for Utah, a rarity. UO @ Utah ought to get a lot of media coverage and good time slot, and Utah’s crowd should be loud.

Will Stanford come into Reser extra focused, or still beat down?

  44. Last week was typical for an up and coming program. It’s bound to happen with peaks and valleys through a steady upward trajectory. Beavs right the ship 42-14. Tibs pressure recedes with a near shutout. I know it’s the Buffs but still P-5.

  45. Cal will be without several starters for Saturday’s game at Arizona after the school previously announced that “multiple” players were in COVID-19 protocols and would be unavailable. The team’s availability report did not specify which players were out due to injuries as opposed to protocols, but the list includes starting QB Chase Garbers, offensive linemen Matthew Cindric, Ben Coleman and Will Craig, defensive end Luc Bequette and kicker Dario Longhetto.

    https://theathletic.com/news/multiple-cal-starters-including-qb-chase-garbers-unavailable-vs-arizona/kYQFA3QFHxKI/
    Luck o beavs

  46. TPB’s nearly made the quack win over tOSU look cheap. Game showed what pressure on the QB will do. Not a husker fan here but props to their work today on D; the buckeye QB felt the rush on most plays that I saw………Tibs, take notice!
