    • Good teams have depth. We’ll see in the next two weeks if the Beavs pitching can hold up.

After wsu they play two vs grand canyon and then ASU at home. So two mid week games and down two starters. No update on Mundt but doesn’t seem likely he’ll appear anytime soon. Have to assume the others who have not made appearances are injured and out as well. So that’s a lot of innings to fill. Guys will have to extend their outings and hope for the best. Kmatz should be kept at a pitch count to make sure he makes it through the season.

      • Yeah, Dorman will need to earn his pay. Some guys may need to go short stint on short rest to get through; as said before, offense has to do their part.
Would you start Pfennings in a mid-week contest instead of vs Tree?

        • Depends on how he looks in bullpens. Does he need to work back into shape or is he in good form? If he’s limited, they may go with a weekday start to give extra rest. But if he’s back to 100%, no real reason to hold him back.

FWIW (nothing) CFB Twitter seems to be supportive of Daniels to OSU. Lots of “he would do great in that offense” comments.

    • “he would do great in that offense”

They need to narrow down the best receiver rotation, the run game effectiveness can be fairly called into question with a new starting RB, and Daniels still needs to win the starting job.

  2. Blitz writer on likely O-line: Levengood-C, Kipper and Fuaga on the right side, Grey and Brewer on the left side. All this with a caveat from coach M:
“You really don’t even want a depth chart in spring,” … “You want guys to go compete. We’re moving guys to different positions, having them do different things, and trying things.“We’re rotating guys all over,” … “We’re moving guys in and out. Jake Levengood took snaps in pass rush today at tackle, guard, and center.”

  3. Josh Worden tweeted the following vid. Right out of the Mitch Canham heads up baserunning text. Ole Miss leadoff hitter steals 2nd, 3rd, and home! Gets credit for only one stolen base. Coach at 3b should get an assist.
Check it out while you wait for the Beavs – Cougs game which is to be livestreamed by WSU at 3 today.

  4. This dopey Coug fan on the hot mic is pretty funny. Dropping F bombs towards the home plate ump left and right amd getting picked up pretty clearly on the audio feed.
Beavs just dominating early, 6 runs in the first with 2 out and 2 on currently. Bazzana already on his 2nd at bat.

  5. Hjerpe goes out for the 6th, having thrown 99 pitches.
Gotta wonder if this would be the decision if not for the injuries…….or the 7 run lead.
    It’s all on Dorman.

    EDIT/ADD: 2 pitches, OK Dorman.

  6. Another solid win for the baseball team but Hjerpe going 5 1/3 made the bullpen have to throw longer than they should have. Kmatz starting tomorrow means the bullpen will have to fill about 4-5 innings again.

    • I think Hjerpe went long enough today.
It’s a balancing act which I expect we’ll see more of; bullpen short outings on short turn around.
Three bullpen arms went today, their number of pitches was: 17, 10, and 23. Compare that to Hjerpe throwing 101 and, importantly, the chances that in the long run he’s gonna be more effective later if he stays under 100-110 now.

I’m more concerned that Ferrer didn’t look like the same guy as when he faced the Anteaters.

B3, good guys up 2-1. Logan nails a coug on attempted steal, close play, I’d like to see a replay. Anyway, that helps Kmatz’s pitch count.
After 3 innings Kmatz is at 45 pitches…….dare we hope for 6 innings from him?

  8. Dorman decides 77 pitches is enough for Kmatz, 5 full. Apparently not concerned with conserving the bullpen; he coulda got another inning from Kmatz, IMHO.

      • Wonder how Forrester likes hitting immediately after Melton? Keeps getting up after the bases get cleared.
And with how often Forrester gets walked, maybe he should get in ahead of Melton to add an extra base runner?

        • Really not a bad idea. Wheeler, Boyd and Melton all hit a lot of extra bases. Forrester is having a slow start but he still has the best obp of any regular starter (.524). I wouldn’t mind seeing Meckler, Forrester, Bazzana, Melton one of these days. Pretty high chance of Melton seeing the plate in the 1st inning with guys on base.

A 4 run b9 at Sunken Diamond isn’t enough for Stanford to avoid a second loss to the quacks. Tree commits 5 errors and gives up 4 bb, 2 WP, 2 HBP and leaves 11 on base in the 16-13 loss.

Fifth loss for tree, pre-season coaches poll had ’em on top of the PAC. Doubt quacks are that good, seems they are catching tree at a good time. Still expect an exciting series when tree visits Goss at the beginning of April.

Nike has lots of young talent after a few great recruiting classes. If they’re hitting their stride, they can compete for the conference title.

      • 6
        1

IDK, seems to me quack has benefited from flaws that tree may correct. Tree gifted them 6 errors in two games along with 3 WP and 3 HBP.
Quack, OTOH, also plunked 3 batters, committed a balk, a WP, and gave up 12 bb in the two victories.

Free bases were a weak spot for the Beavs last year; seems this year it’s someone else’s turn.

  10. 3

First spring scrimmage with live tackling sounded decent, with the defense in control, and allegedly improved energy and tackling, with few missed tackles. DB Ron Hardage noted for “textbook” open field tackles, so that’s nice to hear. Nolan with an INT to McCartan, Martinez with some nice runs.

    • 9
      1

If I learned anything last year it’s to ignore 99% of practice reports because they have no correlation with game performance

    • Any chatter if Mascarenas could start this year? He was killing people on special teams. Need more speed at the linebacker spot to help with coverage. Not sure if that’s him or not.

      • I think his longest outing at OSU is 1.33 innings. Idk for sure but he may just be one of those all gas and no breaks pitchers at this point, his pitches and angles are extremely nasty but he may not be able to keep it up for long at this point in his career.

I’d like to see him as a closer if he doesn’t have the longevity for 2+ innings in relief. His stuff is nastier than Verbergs imo.

  11. Now you can stop holding your breath; Verburg comes in to close the b8 with a GO and K.
    8-7 good guys.
Impressed that Verburg does that well, having seen so little game action.

    • 4
      1

There was a ton of errors too. I would put this one solidly on the players laying off the gas. They got a big lead early and got sloppy.

  12. 17 hits is a bit rough. Couple HBP. Not gonna be top tier all the time but I think we can see that our relief pitching outside of 4 or 5 can be dicey. What’s the thoughts on Verburg? That’s 2 blown…don’t have stats in front of me so perhaps wrong.

    • Honestly I like Lattery as a closer more than verberg atm. Also Verberg can go 50+ pitches in relief, he has quite a few times.

  13. Not to be chicken little, but it’s hard to overstate what a lost opportunity this was. The chance to sweep a conference series can’t be taken for granted; gotta take care of business especially vs teams ranked in the bottom half of the PAC.

Certainly winning any series beats the alternative, especially on the road. But, it’ll be hard to offset this lost opportunity with a series sweep vs the likes of zona, UCLA, and Stanford.

    • It’s the next man up scenario. Someone who was slotted for the bullpen is going to have to step up into a full time starter role. One pitcher I am curious about is Boisvert. Has not made an appearance and haven’t seen any news on his status. He was a guy supposed to help in the bullpen. Wonder if he is hurt.

    • I hear you, don’t want to be too critical, but no way around it….this was a bad loss against a middling opponent. Eight runs should win the game. Hopefully, it end up not mattering much in the long haul, but one never knows.

    • 4
      3

It’s baseball. We’ll be ok. This team is hard to beat. We’re not going to win them all but over the course of the season, it’s hard to see this team losing more than 10 games. Win 90% Friday night games and mid week games, 80% of Saturday games, and 60% of Sunday games.

  14. Nemec saying there is “growing buzz” that OSU may have a new commitment.
Keeping in mind we had Jayden Daniels and Jam Griffin both visit the past 2 weeks, as well as had a new 2022 kicker offer go out this weekend. Those would be my 3 most likely candidates

    • Only the coaches disagree:

      Current (Previous)

      Baseball America: 3 (8)
      Collegiate Baseball: 3 (4)
      D1Baseball: 5 (7)
      NCBWA: 5 (6)
      Coaches: 6 (6)

  15. Good pac 12 series win for the Beavs! Looking like a fun year for baseball. Remember it’s all about series wins in baseball. Sweeps are nice but they don’t happen often. The offense is legit and should keep us in many games. Pitching will be the biggest question in regards to the ceiling. Either way this is a VERY good team, I don’t know how anyone can say otherwise.

    • Doesn’t overall record matter for conference stadings?
I seem to remember a year where OSU had more series wins than Utah. But Utah had a slightly better overall conference record and they got into the postseasin while OSU got left out.

      • I do think it’s overall wins but winning 2/3 consistently should generally translate to better overall record as well. But, i do think against the bottom tier teams in the PAC we should be getting the sweeps. Losses are obviously expected but you’d hope that 8 runs would be enough to win games. These 2 losses feel bad considering they had the chances to win.

        • I guess my point is don’t panic over two close losses. Those both were close games and ones the beavs very easily could have won. They have been competitive in every game they’ve played this season. That’s the marker of a good squad. I don’t see Texas panicking with their 4 losses. We are first in the PAC 12 with the best overall record. I see a lot of overreacting and it bothers me because it reminds me of Duck fans and their football team.

When I was reading up on Griffin’s lack of playing time the past couple of years, what stood out is he was playing behind 2 guys who entered the NFL draft this year, plus another who transfered to Alabama.
That and his RB coach took the USC job with Luncoln Riley.
So my orange colored glasses view of Griffen is that he’s untapped potential who was stuck behind some pretty talented players, and then now that his turn is up at GT, his coach taking off made him want to looks fpr a team that was ready built to showcase him.
He’s built like a tank at 5’10” listed height. He’s pretty thick, looking at his video here.

    https://twitter.com/Tyrone_Griffin1/status/1503468658378555393?t=txwENO8NerV00moIDar_DQ&s=19

  17. Griffin’s highlights from last year. Looks like a good pass catcher and runner with a low center of gravity, but lacks breakaway speed in this film.

    • They’ll need to go long other wise the weekend series could be a wild one. I would hope for 5 innings, then 2,1,1 by the bullpen. Maybe get verberg in for a non pressure situation.

Lucky for this mid week series, grand canyon has even less pitching and the ones they have left aren’t that good. So beavs get the bats going early, maybe it’ll demoralize their hitters.

    • Man if Lattery can pitch at the level he has been for 40+ a series he would become one of our top relievers. He’s a tall dude with weird angles. He reminds me a lot of Mundt and I think they have the same pitch repertoire.

Saw an article that Deshaun Watson rejected trade to Seahawks. Hilarious, a millionaire QB that needs to pay for massage room handjobs won’t play for SEA. SEA lucks out on a OR nightmare.

Should have fired Carol, hired Bienemy from KC, tried to restructure Wilson….and realky reboot the franchise.

A common theme I’m seeing with JT Daniels and his various stops along his career: His dad is VERY active in what happens with his son. He’s a big personality too. Wouldnt surprise me if he is the unnamed source in Canzano’s piece today. Also wouldnt surprise me if he is the reason Smith knew to follow JT early on, before he ever hit the portal. And Smith was the only cosch I saw do that, which makes me think OSU has the inside track, as long as JT thinks he will take the reigns from Gebbia/Gulbranson/Nolan.

So the question is, do you want that big personality coming in and potentially shaking things up in the QB room and hurting team chemistry?
Personally, yes, I think it’s the type of bold move Smith needs to show OSU can pull off and prove that OSU can be a destination for talented players looking for an opportunity.

    • 1
      1

What does a team w/a likely 7-8 win cap really have to lose by taking a flyer on TJ? Gebbia leaves for one year of opportunity elsewhere?

    • 1
      2

I think big personality is fine but more importantly a leader. I heard last season this really was lacking from Chance. Need someone to rally the troops and lead the offense. It can’t be an offensive lineman or a wide receiver. He would be 1 and done, correct? Good points NB. Hopefully a young qb like Gulbranson sticks around and is ready to take over after next year.

      • He actually has 2 years remaining due to redshirt and Covid year saving a couple years for him.
I’m guessing he views this as a 1 year tryout to get ready for the NFL draft though

Prediction: JT Daniels will be the starting qb for 2022 and Beavs will be an altogether different offensive team due to his downfield throwing ability. Gould will be the main weapon due to breakaway speed and downfield accuracy which we haven’t seen from Nolan.

Beavs will have a legitimate shot at winning the north based on qb play alone, and Rose Bowl is in their sights if Bray can establish a consistent approach to the defensive side, and effective DL play.

If JT Daniels signs, it will be 3 impact players all at once in qb, rb, and Chatfield at DE. I like it and have high hopes until early October comes around to inevitably dash all OSU football hopes and dreams.

  21. I also think the fact that he was part of a national championship team, even as a backup is to the Beavs benefit and advantage. He has shown the ability to be a team guy, stay involved and not rock the boat even when things didn’t go his way after injuries. I think he is looking for an offensive opportunity to put up big number s and showcase his skills for a year maybe 2 before his NFL shot. He may not be as fixated on finding the glamour program ot get to the playoffs, but he may actually be able to lead a less than premier program into those big games if things fall right

Also, he has been throwing against the best secondary in the country for 2 years in practice and any PAC12 defense would be a downgrade in his own competitve experience and less concerning.

  22. Carpenter quite an attitude. K the side in t9.
GCU batter slow to head to first on the third strike that got WAY away from Smith, mental error for sure.

Beavs to the plate for a walk off. 8-8 tied up.

  23. Bullpen today: 4 relievers saw action, 2 each gave up 3 hits. Only Verburg and Carpenter pitched no hit ball, faced 7 batters between them and K’d 5.
Ferrer didn’t look too sharp, 28 pitches; the other three relievers threw 21 or less.

So, still some gas in the tank to back up AJ tomorrow.
Did someone say GCU’s staff wasn’t that great? They’ve had good Tuesday performances so far this year, and looked solid today, maybe less talent on the mound tomorrow?

    • Nemec leaving The Oregonian a couple weeks after Canzano isn’t great – though this is as close as you get to an “off-season” in recruiting.

Another baseball announcer who sounds even older than his actual age is Aaron Goldsmith.

  24. A follower pointed out to me we may have a couple more open scholarahips than being reported because a couple guys from the Fall roster who had eligibility left are not on the Spring roster.
    Ralph Taufa’asau and Shane Kady

We’ll know JT is in when Nolan hits the transfer portal…or maybe JT is why Vidlak already left. I think Nolan would be a great backup to a 5 star talent, but not sold that Nolan is a difference maker for the program. I’d be willing to bet that JT Daniels has some moxie and his presence in the locker-room alone will manifest a different level of confidence throughout the team.
Daniels will have a chance at redemption, Rose Bowl, Best conference newcomer, Offensive Player of the year and legend status at OSU. If he has downfield accuracy, this offense will be next level and elite. He has to see the oline is there, the running game will support him and play action downfield will create highlight plays all season. Nolan couldn’t see the open man, and couldn’t make the downfield throws.

Lindgren needs to be recruiting his tail off to get this guy into the fold. JT will get Lindgren his next big contract, it is in Lindgren interest to go all out to get Daniels.

Seven pitchers, and NONE of them could get a K
A 13-7 loss is usually called a laffer (laugher?). Not sure that applies today, we’ll know more if the Beavs aren’t able to sweep an ASU squad which comes in with only a .444 winning percentage.

  26. I don’t like losing, but I do think its good to get as much of an opportunity to see more players in game action early in the season to figure out who to go to – and who to stay away from – when a key game is on the line.

    • I couldn’t find my comments about him, but from memory I said he came off as a selfish and narcissistic douche in interviews.

My lady might have nailed it even better. She said:

he looked like the type of guy who would sleep with a player’s girlfriend, yet we hear all his teammates hate him and he has a kid. I told her that, and she said, “the mother is probably one of the players girlfriends.”

She was spot on! People bashed her for that at the time, too.

  27. Missed the mid week games but it seems like pfennigs can’t come back fast enough. Kmatz is a great addition but losing Frisch/Mundt to injury, Burns/Watkins/Abel to the pros and, Washburn to transfer we lost a lot of experienced and talented arms.

Early season experience should help in the long run but we might need the offense to carry us more than I like this season. Good thing our offense is absurd.

For guys who have seen these guys pitch what’s the word on Grewe? Jorge Reyes was his high school coach and he had absurd numbers his senior season. Has a fastball in the low 90’s. I know every frosh can’t come in and be a dominant starter but he’s had a rough start.

    • This was kind of my expectations going in to this season…we only had 6 or 7 guys with any real experience for the Beavs in that pitching staff and that was before Frisch and Mundt were out. Some of the new faces have definitely helped out like Kmatz and Carpenter but otherwise this staff is clearly very top heavy. GCU is a good team so splitting 2 mid-week games isn’t the end of the world but to record 0 strikeouts? Given up a ton of hits recently too. Only 2 stats (walks and HR) in the top 5 of the conference and k’s they sit in 8th. Seems like a total shift from last year where k’s were school record #’s but walks and HR were extremely high. Lots of season left obviously but it’s just going to get harder from here on out. Be good to see how they bounce back for this weekend.

  28. Pretty sad that the team “hosting” the Portland regional only managed to win 3 games all season. Most of these teams have won 3 games in the last week

    • Especially after reading last night that he’s visiting WVU and Mizzou the next 2 weekends. Have Smith/Lindgren ever closed on a guy who took other visits after OSU?

      • 1
        1

Their co-eds get to make the last impression….

Seriously though, are either of those programs at a point where TJ Daniels might take them to another level in their conferences, and therefore have a chance at decent bowl games? I suspect Mizzou is not in the SEC (pkus ge just left there). WVU in theirs? I don’t think so. I think at OSU he has a better chance to make a move in a conference w/a lot of change and overall likely lower quality than SEC and B12 (Baylor, Oklahoma).

          • Our only chance is if he really likes the offensive coaches with OSU more so than the others. Too bad we weren’t the last visit.

          • Plus west coast ties and his family being able to see him play. Also if he wants to play behind a good run game with a pretty good Oline.

          • He wants to be on the west coast and no one is more west coast than OSU, Mizzou and WVU may be the smokescreen to look like he is being deliberate rather than desperate. Call me Charlie Brown Beaver fan at this point. lol

For the sake of team chemistry he should be on campus asap. It would be ideal if he could be part of spring camp and fall camp. But I think it is a given he is on campus by late June. My guess is he has the playbook for the spring and summer, is preparing to be the starter already and will come into fall camp ready to play. Hopefully his presence in the locker room will be a dynamic shift in confidence and attitude for the whole team.

My hope and fandom wants JT Daniels to be the next great college story for OSU, but I acknowledge it is indeed the perfect set-up for the Charlie Brown/Lucy trick of all tricks. And he likely ends up at Oregon holding a clipboard and collecting $500k from Nike NIL deals…

    • What option is this QB?
      B, c, d, e?

The qb that was offered yesterday had a nice offer sheet, child’s offer sheet is not as robust

      • Prior to Dorman there were several “A” offers.
Dorman I would consider to be our “B” offer.
And these guys would be in the “C” tier.

You never know, a B could still fall into our lap sortof like how Gulbranson did. Or we could end up down in the D tier if none of the new crop pan out.
