Baseball: Seattle and Irvine Series

327

Series begins tomorrow, but I’ll keep this thread up all week. If anyone can find TV for these please share in the comments.

Given the schedule so far, 7-0 is the start I’d expect if we’re still an elite program, so they have simply met expectations. Good job there. Jury still out on Mitch. Won’t know until we’re deeper in the PAC schedule if he’s improved or not. Watching games will help with that, too. Radio relies too much on the broadcaster’s opinion, which could be biased or simply unobservant. I didn’t hear any major managerial errors in the few hours I had to listen.

Seattle should be an easy win, so 8-0 is the expectation. Irvine being a CA school always has some legit players, though they don’t appear to be very good this year off to a 4-3 start. First tougher matchup on the schedule. 2 out of 3 is the expectation there. Let’s see if Mitch can meet them.

Go Beavs.

  1. New football roster highlights
Unexpected guys off- Shane Kady (only scholarship), Koby Moananu, Joe Jenkins, Ralph T, Dakota Napierowski
New Addition- Walk on WR from corvallis Walker Riney
    Martinez checking in at 228
Weight room positives- Kipper up 17, Collins up 13, and Saluni up 9
Negatives-Sio jumps up to 365 from 347(not sure how long he’ll stay on field (Aydon2.0?)), Irish down 17 pounds to 171

    • Sio – goal line packages only.

Irish – must have weighed in soaking wet last year or was a typo bc all his other years are in the 170 pound range.

    • Hope that 17 on kipper was solid. He is lined up for a 1st team all conference year. Him staying for another year was big for him and team both.

      • Spring weights don’t mean an awful lot, specially for big guys. Modern nutrition and lifting schedules have a ton of ‘bulking’ in the off season where the focus is on lifting max weights and eating shitloads of food. Many of these guys are actually getting pudgy on purpose right now so they can recover quicker and build muscle. In the late summer and fall the focus switches to cardio and endurance work. Most of the team will lose weight over the course of the season.

        • Thanks. I have a pretty good understanding how they train Im just hoping its all muscle as opposed to Sio who’s 18 pound gain Im guessing is not. Those big boys can pack it on quick. Have high hopes for Kipper.

          • Agreed, if things go right for Sio then in fall he should be rolling at around 350. He has an incredibly large frame and can handle playing very large.

  2. Saw that Colorado’s brand new DL coach, Vic So’oto(who i was bummed OSU couldnt snag this offseason) is already Colorado’s former DL coach. Was hired Dec 30th, and is now leaving to take an unnamed position back in SoCal for “family reasons”
So’oto was previously at USC and then let go when Lincoln Riley was hired.
I’m guessimg he’s headed to UCLA next, although that part hasnt been announced at this point.

    • And So’oto ends up taking the OLB job at Cal.
Sucks for Colorado. Cant be easy to find a new position coach now that most coaches have found a spot for next season.

  3. NIL greasiness: USC QB Caleb Williams gives USC WBB team members Beats headphones prior to PAC12 tourney, Beats apparently one of his NIL sponsors…

    • It was destroying itself for several years since the Rob Manfred era. Total disaster. Manfred’s obsession with speeding up the game killed the game.

Dang, just realized I’ll be in Reno later in the month and miss seeing OSU baseball there by 1 day. Bad timing.
Looks like the games got moved from the University campus site, to the mILB Reno Aces home, Greater Nevada Field, which looks like a pretty nice ballpark on the Truckee River in downtown.

    • Dang, that’s too bad. I have the week of the week before or else I would go. The Reno Aces stadium is AMAZING! Definitely the nicest non MLB stadium I’ve been to. Went to watch an Aces gm there one time and it was a great time. I wish I could go

  5. OSU announces today masks will no longer be required indoor or outdoor starting March 12 on campus. And effective immediately, no more proof of vaccination or negative covid test either.

    So….back to normal?
Just dont forget your clear bags.

  6. OT: Smith says Alton Julian is coming along great, but won’t do much in spring…

OLB Chatfield: “Explosive. Had a good offseason. Continued to change his body. He’s one of those guys that has a true opportunity now, and hopefully he can help us affect the quarterback.”

Addison Gumbs: “No current update.” Hiw us thst? Seems like one of the stranger player and information management examples from OSU football.

    • 1
      1

Seems pretty similar to the Aquino situation. They’ll never disclose it until the athlete says why. Basically just shouldn’t count on him ever playing.

Chatfield is the guy who needs to be a wrecking ball. He’ll be in rasheds former spot. Likely a LB on early downs and rush end on passing downs. Saluni too since he’s up over 270 now.

      • I was told by someone who is a degree removed from the situation that it had something.to do with Covid and hesitency to get vaccinated and/or play last year. No idea how accurate that is, but fits with why they team hasnt commented but the player is seemingly healthy enough to play.
So who knows, maybe if they drop all vaccine requirements, things could chang next season and we get more than 1 game?

  7. Sounds like a duck football coach had a heart attack tonight. Don Johnson, the former local high school coach at Portland’s Madison and Jefferson HS.
Hope he is able to recover ok. No idea how serious it was

  8. Anteaters come up with a somewhat sloppy win vs SDSU, 3-2.
    ‘eaters with 3 errors, 2 HBP, 5 bb, 8 k’s.
Only 4 hits (one of which was a 2 RBI HR), 11 LOB.

Tonight was not really typical of the ‘eaters this year, still looks most likely the Beavs take 2 of 3 but a sweep isn’t out of the question.
Forecast for the series shows little chance of rain at Goss.

  9. WBB start Pac12 tournament play today vs the Realtor and ASU at 2:30.
I havent watched hardly any WBB this year. No idea if we have much of a shot at the NCAAs?
Not a good sign that we’re not one of the 1st round bye teams.

    • They have to win a couple to get in. It has been quite a disappointing year for WBB with all the talent they have. And it’s not like they have a lot of close losses either. 6-9 in conference play and only one of those losses was close.

      • 1
        1

Figured as soon as they lost their veteran leader, Jones, it would turn into a development year.
Hopefully she comes back strong next season, should have a pretty talented team on paper next year with the incoming Beers and Gardiner too.

        • 6
          4

Losing Sasha Goforth in transfer portal at the end of last year had a significant impact on this team. Combine this with losing Jones and I’m not surprised with the struggles we’ve seen. They’re not as talented as some may think and really struggle at both end of the floor.

          • 2
            4

They still started 4 players who were 5 star recruits in the last game. Three with significant game experience. Shouldn’t be struggling at all.

          • 2
            4

Ha! Yes, stars mean everything. Rueck is a horrible coach and this team should have competed for a championship.

          • 1
            3

I mean yeah, he should be competing for championships. PAC12 championships and national championships every single year. There should be no low expectations or excuses for this team with the amount of talent they have.

It’s ridiculous to have a losing conference record too.

  10. Tough game to watch. Beavs relying on streaky 3 point shooting and can’t rebound. Luckily ASU started cold from the field. Beavs should have a larger lead than 16-11 though. Was 13-3 a few minutes ago

  11. Beavs had a pretty comfortable lead here in the 4th, bit have given ASU some life with sloppy ball handling and ASU finally hitting a few shots.
The inbounding amd back court ball handling have alot of room for improvement.
Mack has picked up scoring slack.
    52-45 Beavs with 2:20 left

    • 1
      1

And another backcourt turnover leads to an easy ASU shot. Followed by ASU 3. 52-50 Beavs with 1:13. Just an epic collapse here by the Beavs.

      • Beavs hang on 59-54. Such a sloppy finish but they get the W. Stanford tomorrow, so unless Stanford sits several players, that’s probably it for the season

        • They almost lost it to their forever nemesis – backcourt pressure. Charley whatever-her-name is likes to taunt Rueck’s teams with it. The Beavs survived this time – good thing they had the early big lead. Revenge for the earlier game where the Beavs were ahead and it was ruined at the end with Rueck getting thrown out and lots of free throws for ASU.

          • Rueck has been at OSU for 12(?) years and, during that time, have all the wbb teams routinely had trouble with back court pressure and tallied minuses in points after turnovers?

        • 3
          1

I read a couple of days ago that they are likely a high seed in the WNIT tourney. I’m assuming Rueck will accept a bid, so maybe the season is not quite over yet.

  12. 1
    2

No Frisch or Pfennings this weekend. Yikes. Getting a series W would be huge given the starting pitcher shortage. Need Hjerpe to pitch to late innings and help save the bullpen.

  13. 1
    1

Is it just me, but to the Beavs have a history with early season pitcher injuries? Maybe its just a “baseball thing” and pitchers ramp up too quickly – or haven’t done enough work in the off-season to keep the arm fresh and loose. Seems to happen in the MLB as well.

    • More of a result of youth coaches over throwing kids at a young age and kids wanting to throw harder than their bodies allow. Partly driven by kids wanting to get a scholarship. Can’t hold back.

  14. A potential DE transfer I’m keeping my eye on. Dontae Myrick out of Montana State. 6’7″, 235 lb DE played HS in Portland(Jefferson) with Damir Collins. I had been hopeful OSU would have grabbed him on a PWO offer that year but he ended up getting the scholarship offer to MSU.
    He’s in the portal now.

    • Donate has a good motor and puts in the work would be a nice addition. Nathan (Damir Collins other buddy) who committed same day went to
Oklahoma but he’s definitely homesick. Expecting more transfers as the spring rolls along. Now we wait for mama machado to share news about Gebbia and Big Ben trying to over take Nolan

      • 1
        1

Did he get a scholarship from Oklahoma, or was he a PWO?

I can understand living in Oregon, moving to Oklahoma, and thinking “Why did i do this?!?”

But then i’m biased to Oregon’s and PNW’s outdoors. I wouldn’t feel comfortable in the mid-west or east.

        • Nathan Rawlins-Kibonge was a 4* scholarship guy at Oklahoma. But could understand him wanting to leave since his coach took off.

Could see him landing at oregon though. Where his HS cosch Don Johnson works.
(Speaking of Johnson, havent heard any updates on his status after the heart attack this week)

      • 258 according to the teams website, if he can put on 30 pounds during the summer he might be a Dustin Stanton 2.0 type player

      • Go to the athletic website and the football roster and select the player. On it has a historical tab with his history.

Other way to do it is the site has historical rosters going back a number of years.

    • Not surprising with the way the market is in Phoenix area. Highest home valuation year over year gains for the last 8-10 years running. SHe probably has a bunch of new build buyers lined up and waiting for their perfect opportunity and her side gig as a wbb coach was cutting into her commissions.

She was a fierce coach though.

      • Didja know that she played 3 seasons at Tree, for Tara?
She’s got a BA in psychology and Masters in education, she’s no dummy!
Fierce coach for sure, her gals always played physical (sometimes more than that!).
Rueck says her teams made his teams better and that she welcomed him to the PAC.

    • Her hair at the game yesterday was wild. Like she just woke up from a nap where she had been sleeping on the side of her face.

Beavs down 44-29 to Stanford with 2:28 in the 3rd. Beavs just dont have the horses to compete with Stanford. TVO hasnt been scoring like a #1 option. A few role players have stepped up a little to help make up for that, but just nowhere near enough.
Wish we had a Kat Tudor out there.

      • Haven’t followed the women’s team much since Wiese graduated – what’s been the story this year? Not as strong outside shooting? Injuries to key players? COVID?

        • There should be several different responses here to your question.
I’ll begin with the loss of Taylor Jones to injury, that’s the most obvious.
Some may not agree, but it seems to me that the three “one and done” transfers have been slow to find their roles in Rueck’s system, all talented gals but sporadic playing time has done them no good.

CORRECTION: make that 2 “one and done”; forgot that Ellie Mack played last year.

  15. Oregon state had its first practice. Nothing major as far as news goes.

    Starting O:
    LT- Levengood
    LG- Brewer
    C- Espinoza, Miller
    RG- Fuaga
    RT- Kipper
    RB- Martinez
    QB Nolan, Gebbia, Gulbranson
    WR Harrison, Beason, Gould
    TE Musgrave, Overman
Pretty much what you’d expect aside from LT hopefully Gray is healthy. C seems like it could be an issue. Miller was very light last year and a former walk-on and not sure who Espinoza is but could be a little alarming if those are the best options. Irish, Bolden, and lindsay also took reps. Hopefully we can see Tongue and the penn state transfer get into the mix more this year. Will Valsin contribute this year?

  16. Quitoriano was rated the ninth best TE prospect by nfl.com. His rating put in an average prospect category. Measured 6’6” and 256 lbs. Has some of the smallest hands for the TE group but had above average arm length. Second best with 22 reps on the bench press at the combine.

    • There were 11 TE’s drafted last year, so if he really is #9, he has a decent chance of getting drafted.

Even Togiai, who wasn’t drafted, has bounced up and down between practice squad and full roster for a few years. TQ is a better blocker.

  17. UC Irvine has suddenly become a much tougher series with the pitching injuries.

The offense will need to stay hot for the Beavs to win the series. Depending on how long Hjerpe can go, it’s going to be a lot of innings to fill by the bullpen. I’d guess Kmatz is limited to 80 pitches for his outing, don’t want to blow his arm out. The bullpen will need to string together some good outings. Don’t really expect any of the rest of the guys to go more than 3 innings so almost everyone will throw.

    • Spot on.
This will tell us more about Dorman; he seems to have coached the staff away from the HBP trend, now, will he ride a hot bullpen arm or stay with the one inning apiece we’ve seen lately. His management of the pen will be just as important as the performance of the players.

      • Feels like we’re not trying that inside pitch as much and pitching to put ball into play. Trust the defense. Staff pretty young, will be interesting to see how they respond!

  18. Beavs mbb lost by 4 to WSU last night. Late game, camera panned the stands to a lone gentleman in an OSU jacket. So there were at least 2 OSU fans watching, one at the game and me online. Shorthanded again, Lucas played all 40 minutes. Reasons for this season’s debacle aside, I didn’t think the team ever gave up. If only . . .

3-28? How does Tinkle survive that?

Get him out asap, and hire the latest Gonzaga assistant…

OSU athletics is just a blind squirrel looking for a nut anyway. Time to start taking high risk high reward moves in major sports before it all implodes.

Who is heading the Esports division of OSU athletics anyway? Maybe that is the best place to win.

    Football- disappointment this year
    MBB- dumpster fire this year
    WBB- disastrous by comparison
    Baseball- hopeful start

Not a good year for OSU sports, I hope next year has some better results for all programs.

    • 4
      2

Too harsh… mbb just setting up for a run though the post season. Go to the NCAA with 7-29 record (auto bid for wining PAC-12 Tourney) then straight to the Natty! Win it all with a record of 13-29! Tinkle gets lifetime extension.

    • I thought football making a bowl was better than the shit that’s been happening since the Alamo bowl. Should have been better, but better than expected for most.

      • 1
        1

I guess my expectations were too high to think they actually had a shot at the Rose Bowl if the coaches don’t blow 3 games…I will contend that they had a real shot at the North until WSU, then they choked against Cal and CO, all hugely disappointing losses which were avoidable. Smith waited to long to cut bait on Tibs and probably jumped too soon with Bray. We shall see going forward but I don’t think there is much argument regarding the arc of last season and a huge missed opportunity.

I appreciate the difference since Riley’s Alamo bowl debacle.

    • My first call would be to Leon Rice at Boise State. Not that I’m confident he’d leave there for this tire fire program.

    • Gymnastics is having a good year, mens soccer. And the stadium reno. Football program has a pulse. Softball team is 14-3 with wins over Baylor and no. 17 Tennessee.

    • Looks like Big Tinks has somebody to commiserate with, I just read that Patrick Ewing is in the same boat at Georgetown. 0-18 in the conference (6-23 overall) after making the big dance last season. 19 straight losses, but the administration is keeping him for next season also.

  20. We’ve seen way more batting order continuity than last year. Another major strategy change. It feels like Canham and co. basically did a strategic 180 this season.

  21. Quick rundown of our starters hitting so far this year.

    Melton over .500
    Meckler, Boyd, Fuchs over .400
    Bazanna, Logan over .350
    Forester, Gretler, Dernedde over .300
    Zero under .300

    4 players averaging 1+ rbi a game
    2 players averaging 1+ walk a game

    • I’m watching at the link in the OSU baseball schedule and it’s working ok.
Although it can be glitchy when I switch to full screen

  22. Gotta love commentator talking during the 7th inning stretch and not realizing the telecast didn’t go to a commercial. He will be going to the bathroom soon if anyone is wondering.

    • Didn’t know anything about Ferrer but the announcers have been very helpful.

I figured all arms would be limited but his resume has him with a lot of innings under his belt in past years. So he’s looking like the long reliever and probably the weekday guy if Frisch and Pfennings are able to come back.

  23. I really don’t envy the coaches figuring out the batting order. No matter what you are leaving acouple better than average bat in the bench. Dernedde, Bazzana, Boyd, Gretler, Melton are must starts in my book. That leaves Meckler, Forrester, Wheeler, Fuchs, Logan and Smith in some form of rotation which is pretty nuts. 6 guys that would all be starting every game on lost rosters! That doesn’t even count some of the newer talent like Myros and Guerra.

    • Damn I miss edit.

I don’t even see it loosening up much next year even though I’d expect 4-5 of these guys to take a look at the pros (Melton, Fuchs, Gretler, Meckler, Wheeler).

      • Is softball expected to be improved this year? I noticed 13 straight wins and a 16-3 record. I’ve seen this to some degree before and then they get pounded in league play.

        • They did take down solid UT and Baylor squads as well as not get destroyed by Bama, yes that’s a good thing. Could be a middle of the Pac-12 season which would mean a tournament berth.

  24. 2
    1

UCI pulls ahead again. Beavs respond with 5 RBI including a 2 out 3 RBI homer by Jake Dukart! Not gonna lie I expected him to tap an easy one to short.

4-8 Beavs with 2 outs in the 5th.

  25. Almost odd that the hoops coach less likely to be in Corvallis next year is Reueck with a few plum jobs open and the Beavers short of cash.

  26. 4
    1

Mitch off to a nice start. I’d expect at least two losses ooc so this is a good sign even if they drop today. Offense seems incredible. Haven’t had time to watch yet, but I’m going to try today if the game is televised.

      • We sure are playing with lineups this pre-season. I like that the coaches aren’t afraid to lose if it gives us a better shot down the line. I could see plenty of coaches getting frozen when they are looking at 10-0

    • Hes just not a starter. Great to have a relief guy that can go 3+ innings but you are right, hes not at that level.

      • You picked a bad one to watch. Team overall not mentally sharp today, you do know that we don’t have the usual SS out there right?
No coincidence, the ‘eater pitcher today is one of the best we’ve faced so far this season.

I still think AJ Lattery will prove to be important, although not as important as Ferrer, really too bad you haven’t seen him.

  27. Didn’t realize Verberg still had eligibility left – seems he’s been in Corvallis forever. Last Casey player and link to the title team.

Josh Worden does a really nice job with baseball. I’m guessing will have Parker back next week.

  28. Wasn’t in the cards today. Biggest stat probably 0-5 with runners in scoring position. Had the 2 chances in 9th and 10th. Big series win though with the injuries to normal starting rotation.

    • Yeah, that’s the positive for the offense. We generated plenty of baserunners, just couldn’t get them home. Some games are just like that. Over the long haul if you’re getting guys on base, you’re going to be successful more often than not.

  29. Beavs jump way up to #7 in D1 baseball poll. Gonzaga enters at #25. Need Gonzaga to keep it up for those wins to count big in the rpi.

Should be a unanimous top 10 team in all the polls today.

        • UCI is always good but I was surprised at the poor play by the right side of the infield last weekend. That’ll likely change as the season goes on.
I sat through 2 of 3 in 2014 and agree with you, wouldn’t want to face them in post season.

I have no problem with bat flip. He visualized hitting a home right there. Stepped up and almost got it done.
He obviously thought it was out thus flipped the bat. Tells me he has next level confidence in himself. He’s a future MLB player. Probably 1 of 4 on this team that has legit shot at time in bigs. If (big IF) we can get quality starters behind Cooper, this team will get to Omaha. It’s early but that’s my take based on watching this team in person and on-line so far this year.

    • I love the batter flip, I hate all the unwritten rules about celebration, act like you’ve been there before…etc. Now if you celebrate too early, then you deserve all the mocking you recieve.

  31. Beavs ranked #2 in Boyds World. Gonzaga is #9, and that doesn’t count them finishing the sweep vs Okla St today. UC Irvine is #28.

We’d probably would be #1 if Melton’s shot made it over the fence. We’re always high ranked in Boyd’s world. Always feels like Aaron Fitt doesn’t like us, ranks us lower than he knows he should. Fitt picked Irvine to win the series last weekend.

    http://www.boydsworld.com/baseball/isr/currentisr.html

  32. I didn’t listen to the content, but Canzano has this in a podcast:

“Dave Bartoo is an analytics expert known as “The College Football Matrix.” He joined me on Monday to talk about a variety of topics including why he thinks Oregon State’s Brian Lindgren is the best quarterback coach in the Pacific Northwest.”

    • Problem is he may be the worst QB recruiter in the the Pacific Northwest, which drops him down to just average overall.
Maybe getting this topic out there will help in that regard?
We really have no excuse for how poor our QB recruiting has been since Smith/Lindgren took over. Or maybe they’ve been great and we just had bad luck with injuries. But every year we strike out on our main targets and end up picking up players discarded or ignored by other Pac12 teams.

      • Seems that way, which is partly why i pointed this out. i hope this positive exposure helps, but tend to doubt it.

If Gebbia were healthy would on the field results have been better, and recruiting success following? I don’t know, seems possible though.

      • 5
        2

It’s also not good when you recruit someone, then tell their dad that they didn’t play their kid because they were scared it would look bad to the upperclassmen.

          • Sure, no problem with him being beat out by better talent. But why tell that to a players parent? It’s not like that stuff stays within one player either. The team hears about it. People talk about it and it’s not a good look at all. He’s not the only one that thinks lindgren is a gomer. But he’s a great qb coach so…

And wow redneck? Classy comment there. Pretty sure he was on scholarship and one of the higher recruits in that class.

          • I was being facetious about Lindgren bringing in Noyer and installing him as the starter even though he clearly sucks shit. That tells me everything I need to know about Lindgren’s QB coaching and eye for talent. I don’t blame Vidlak one bit for leaving for a better program.

And yeah, Vidlak was a 3 star scholarship guy. I hope he earns the starting job at Boise State and breaks the handle off in OSU’s ass this year. That would be the most OSU move ever.

    • Who are the other qb coaches in the Pacific Northwest? Would that be the Washington schools (both new staffs), Oregon (new staff), anyone else? Smaller schools? Not sure that is really much of a compliment but it sounds good!

      • Good question. The tweet i saw said top in Pacific NW(OR/WA/ID), and #2 in entire Pacific region(add CA/HI/NV)
I think being labeled #2 in the bigger Pacific region carries more weight than 1st out of the NW

  33. Boyds world is doing softball iterative strength ratings. Beavs #8 there. Maybe they have finally broken through and get back to the days where they were consistently ranked.

    • Not sure if its just a coincidence – but 750 pushed his show to afternoon drive this week (supposedly to make room for the Grey/Perloff CBS Radio show) when he was doing it midday. Not sure where he was cashing a bigger check at this point – radio or the O. My guess is that he wasn’t upset about the time shift (works from home in any event). It will be curious to see how well his newsletter does with advertising.

    • AFC West is loaded at QB: Mahomes, Wilson, Carr, Herbert. I’m sure SEA wanted to trade him out of NFC if they traded him. SEA needs a lot of talent infusion. Wilson alone couldn’t likley get them through a competitive NFC west with Super Bowl champ Rams pretty set for the short term, and the Cards and SF being pretty competitive.

Oregon will be without Senior G Will Richardson for the Pac12 tournament. Beavs play Oregon first. I’m smelling another Tinkle extension!

    • UGA is on spring break this week so there may be some legs. But I doubt it’s Daniels. If it is a transfer it’s some other guy.

      • I did notice our new recruiting coordinator started following Daniels this week. And then our TE/OL JT Byrne also started following him in the last few days.
Figured there’s a chance coaches could have paired them up for campus tour stuff since Byrne is a Cali guy too? Or just coincidence.

I’ve got a few queations out, but nobody ever talks about transfers until they’re a done deal

  35. I am not eating again until we win a men’s basketball game! If they keep playing like this they could miss the tournament AND the NIT!!! At least we always have a spot in the cbi as a legacy team.

  36. So, anyone hoping that any of these players stick around? If so who would you like to see stay and who do you hope is gone?

Keep Andela, Taylor, Lucas, Davis, Rand. Add several pure shooters, grad transfer post, and serviceable backup PG. Clean house and get better assist coaches. Improve recruiting with increased focus on player evaluation and cultural fit instead of athleticism and star rating. I don’t think it’s that hard in college basketball to turn it around quickly but I have little faith Tinks is smart enough to develop and implement an effective plan… but we’re stuck with him. Pray for 10 wins in 2023

        • I think our AD needs to push him out before the PAC pushes us out. 3-29 after elite 8 is absolutely historic. He should be hiding in the forest and change his name to Sasquatch.

Altishe is in a tough spot, regressed, and then injured. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him transfer again. Tinkle is already calling the season a “blip”, but that’s two absolute clusters on his OSU resume now. He’s also playing the injury card again. All teams have injuries. Lots of teams win with 7-8 man rotations.

Happened to catch a bit of CAL/WSU game tonight. Jesus christ it was boring. Cal couldn’t buy a bucket and WSU carried the ball like a plastic grocery bag. I guess carrying is not called anymore by anyone anywhere…how is the viewer supposed to care about the outcome when the game is that bad?

  38. Pete Thamel confirms the Daniels visit rumors this morning. Says WVU and Mizzou are also contenders and that Daniels will decide after Spring ball and after he graduates from GA.

I’m guessing he’ll want to see how the QB room shakes out these next few weeks at each school to know what his competition looks like

    • I’m pretty surprised that he is considering OSU. I guess the early rumors were true that he was looking to move west and Smith had some back channel conversations and followed him before he entered the transfer portal.

Agree, he’ll wait to see how the depth chart shakes out after spring ball. He really only needs to beat out Nolan and Gebbia. WVU has a favorable QB situation. Mizzou has a returning QB but depends if they are willing to lose him if Daniels transfers in.

      • Was just reviewing the timeline of events from January.
Looks like the first notice of Smith/Yray following Daniels was Jan 13th. Then around the 17th rumors started swirling that Daniels was going to enter the portal. Not sure what day he officially hit the portal was, but it came even later. So Smith did appear to have a heads up about him and has been at least showing interest well ahead of other teams. And since cosches cant contact players prior to the portal, gotta think there was some back channel convo going on somewhere, maybe with family or some other representative. Or maybe Smith just wanter to pusruse an NIL deal?
The thread has it all. JT vs Jayden Daniels confusion. Dorman/Lindgren’s on again off again relationship.
The west coast rumors might be true, and if they are I dont see how Mizzou and WVU factor into this.
So maybe it’s not as important of a factor as just flat out playing time and offensive roster makeup.

  39. Time to forget basketball, both men’s and women’s.

Back to the currently winning team,

Stats wise the series vs WSU shows a clear advantage to the Beavs but it’ll be a tough series. It’s a conference road series, and the Beavs are down 2 starting pitchers. Lots of arms will throw again this weekend. Bats need to come through to take the pressure off the pitchers. It’s wsu first home series of the year so they’ll be pumped up a bit.

If our competition for Daniels is WVU and Mizzou, I like our chances. Neither is a super attractive destination, so it’s not like we’ll be losing out to a premier program in a premier location, and OSU has the west coast location going for it. You could argue OSU will be the most competitive in their conference next year out of those 3, as well. USC obviously looks scary, but the North should be wide open again.

Orange-colored glasses notes the following factors that work to our advantage:

      1. QB developers in Smith and Lindgren (even if their recruiting is lacking)
      2. Returning OL and Coach M leading the group
      3. Pro-style offense to prepare the QB for the next level
      4. Strong run-game to work PA
      5. Solid core of experienced wide receivers

I don’t know much about Missouri or WVU, but getting him on campus is a huge step.

    • Perhaps Matt Moore can offer some free advice to Daniels. A little surprised he hasn’t landed anywhere yet. Most people I heard talking about Georgia thought he was the more talented QB on the roster.
I have to think landing him would improve the position, and hopefully get other QB prospects to look to Corvallis. Remember when Smith came on as a player, he was a walk on and took over for a JC transfer, but the Beavers did well enough that they they got Anderson, Canfield then Mannion.

    • Griffin is intriguing. Was the 2018 Gatorade POY in the state of Georgia. Played sparingly in 2019/2020 and redshirted in 2021(appeared in only 4 games). So should have 3 years to play 3 I believe.
Not a bruiser like Fenwick, but makes up for it by being slippery and having good escapability. Teams seems to have a tough time getting a hand on him. Also doesnt gave the top speed of Lowe. A little like Quizz in that he doesnt have that standout physical attribute, but still makes good things happen.

Not sure why he only appeared in 4 games last year(injury or just depth chart?) Will need to read up on that. Sounds like Tech had the deepest RB room in the ACC last year which is leading to him transferring.

Luke Musgrave is a new follower of JT Daniels.
Probably would love to have a QB who can throw an accurate ball. Figure this will be Musgraves last year here and probably wants to help his draft stock

  42. Somebody asked earlier in the thread, the recruit Bam Afalava from viaits last weekend is only distantly related to Al Afalava. Like 3rd level cousins or something like that. They are not close though.

  43. Several more Beavs players following Daniels on IG since Mushrave did earlier.
Also, for how stagnant recruiting had been this offseason, it seems like the hiring of Robert Cole Moore to the recruiting staff has been a catalyst to really get things moving again. Just seeing alot more activity, offers, player engagement, as well as the recent visits of course. Should be more visits this weekend. We seem to be funneling more players onto campus than previous spring periods.
I read that Friday practices during spring camp are kept light because the staff wants to also spend alot of their Friday time hosting players getting them exposed to the practice and team environment.
