  1. Just for context, last year’s team started 10-1 with a plus 50 run differential.

Current year team has a plus 42 run differential through 4 games.

If you want to watch, you have to pay for the subscription to flosports or whatever its called.

    • In a conference series it would be hjerpe but looks like they want him on a full weeks rest early in the year. So it’s a bullpen start today.

Pressure is off with the offense staying hot. Gus can throw free and easy.

  2. Beavs with 69 runs in 5 games and Forrester hasn’t even been able to drive the ball much yet. This is a crazy offense. Melton reminds me a lot of Larnach but a significantly better athlete. Special talent.

    • Didn’t know he was hurt but that explains his absence.

Here’s the guys who have not made appearances yet,
      Frisch
      Mundt
Boisvert – had a great summer with the knights. Had high expectations here.
      Cope
      Stuhr
      Nelson

There’s another lefty on the roster now. Van Larson, pretty sure he wasn’t there two weeks ago.

  3. Beav WBBall drop a much needed win on the road at Utah 70-58. Have to win at Colorado, plus a couple conference tourney games at this point to make the tourney

  4. The nba is so painful to watch. Well worth it though to see EUBANKS with the put back jam! Reggie Miller referred to him a rookie though..

MBB is now in double OT with USC. Should have won the game, but they are 8-18 from the line so far including two Silva misses in the first OT.

  6. Does anyone know if Dashawn Davis can transfer without sitting out a year? Not sure how the rules apply to JC transfers. Can’t imagine him sticking around next year. A PG who can facilitate as well as score when needed would be highly sought after.

    • I would doubt he transfers. He is becoming the pulse of this team. Plus there will be no pressure of expectation coming off such a down season. I could be wrong, it just seems like it would be a silly move. He is the guy here. Can’t be guaranteed he will be that elsewhere.

      • Guess it just depends on if he wants to be the guy or part of a tournament/winning team. Have zero faith WT will do anything next year to improve his staff, the talent on the team, or himself.

Here’s a theoretical basketball question – what if Beavs put it together again and win the Pac-12 Tourney. Would they actually get the auto bid to the NCAA’s with such a terrible record?

      • On to the t6, still only one hit. 2-0 good guys.
Hjerpe 78 pitches through 5 full, 7 k’s, 1 bb, and NO HBP

EDIT/ADD: Hjerpe after 6 full has thrown a 94 pitch shutout, no reason to extend him further, IMHO.

        • Agree. No reason to risk injury to him this early in the season. He’s performed great but now it’s time for the bats and the bullpen to step up and finish this game.

  8. Logan to Wheeler pick off, second (at least) nice play from the C position in the last couple games.
Lots of credit to Wheeler on that one as well.
On to the b8, 5-0 good guys.

      • Could be. Not preseason but Long Beach state may be the hardest on the schedule. They took the series against Mississippi State.

        • Still, after what I witnessed in 2014, and keeping in mind last April when the ‘eaters took 2 of 3; I believe it’s a mistake to doubt Beav in OH when he says, “UCI is going to be a tough team to sweep”

Lookin’ forward to next Friday, I’ll be there with my rain jacket!

          • I don’t think it won’t be tough just not sure they’re as tough as years past. I would say any decent team is tough to sweep. Bats or arms can get hot or cold too easy. If the Beavs continue to play like they have so far they should sweep them tho.

          • If the Beavs continue to play like they have so far they should sweep them tho.

In a classic example of “small sample size”, Nolan today predicts a Beavs sweep of the series vs ‘eaters by a combined score of 28-10.

This isn’t the same ‘eater team as years past but, as you’ve said, Beavs need to continue to play like they have…

Right now I’m guessing the Anteaters will not win more than 1 of the 3 next weekend.

  9. I was curious so I went digging for MLB prospect rankings.

Current roster: Hjerpe has been slotted at both #52 and #95. Frisch at #119. Melton at #210. Frisch and Melton could easily move up based on their performance this season.

C/O ’22 commits: Turley (OF) #78, Gough (P) #241, Kennel (SS) isn’t ranked anywhere, but I see him listed as a sleeper.

The top end of this recruiting class is shaping up even better than last year’s (which was ranked #6). Hopefully it’s just as deep.

How can the US just stand by and let Ukraine get wiped out? I am curious of other perspectives. At least Ukraine has a real leader who will stand up for his country even if it means death. I may get called out for this but I hate seeing other people suffer and other people just vicariously watch.

US leadership is afraid of Russia using nuclear weapons, which means Russia would have to have breached what was a clear boundary before the conflict for their to be justification for US troop involvement. They still have to make it clear they’re playing by the agreed-upon rules between Russia and NATO because Putin will clearly act aggressively if he sees the rules have been compromised/forfeited.

The perverse thing is that from a geopolitical standpoint, the US wants a land war in Europe to strengthen its NATO ties and prove to Germany, etc. that they are still essential protectors.

      • Yeah I heard a report Putin is mentally ill and not making sense, so the threat of nuclear war is real. I’m not sure if that should stop the US from getting involved. Tough call there. I mean all any leader has to do is bluff using nukes, so it sets up a moral hazard/bad precedent. If Putin wasn’t mentally ill I think calling his bluff was the move, but here it’s 50/50.

Russia just took about 10 steps back on the Global stage, and sanctions do have to get harder. I think tougher sanctions is the move from now. Kick them out of Swift now.

        • I think people are overestimating how much this is hurting Russia’s global image. India, China, and UAE all abstained from the UN Secruity Council vote to condemn their actions. India has been moving toward Russia under Modi and has not condemned the attacks at all.

Russia’s image in Europe is definitely taking a hit, but Russia still has a lot of control over them due to energy exports.

Only USD-denominated lending to Chinese firms buying Russian commodities. They can still lend in Yuan. This is just part of China’s gradual push to de-dollarize global trade.

As long as the world is dependent on Russian energy and agricultural production, Russia’s economy can keep humming along. The only way to truly punish them economically will be to bite the bullet and except measures that will lead to more inflation.

Putin may be mentally ill and not making sense as you said, we really have no idea. But honestly, have you looked at our “leaders” lately? Biden hardly inspires confidence that he has any idea what may or may not work in regards to Russia or much of anything else. We still buy 22 million barrels of oil from Russia a month and with oil over 100 dollars a barrel Russia is sitting in a good spot. A year ago we were energy independent but yet everything that made us independent has been shut down hurting us where it matters most- in our wallet. Again, it makes no sense.
          https://www-independent-co-uk.cdn.ampproject.org/v/s/www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/ukraine-russia-oil-gas-prices-b2022026.html?amp_js_v=a6&amp_gsa=1&amp&usqp=mq331AQKKAFQArABIIACAw%3D%3D#aoh=16458933905771&referrer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com&amp_tf=From%20%251%24s&ampshare=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.independent.co.uk%2Fnews%2Fworld%2Famericas%2Fus-oil-russia-ukraine-gas-prices-b2022630.html

          • I guess we’re just going to have to figure out another form of energy and faster than we planned. It’s a good thing long-term; we need a fire under our asses to get off carbon.

Putin is mentally ill. Real Vision posted the story, and the guy speaking had connections directly in the room with Putin. Unless they’re lying for some reason, that’s a good source.

          • All for new forms of energy Angry. But right now wind, solar, and electric cars are not going to replace what every country runs on- fossil fuels. The US has the 11th largest oil reserves in the world just behind Nigeria and the 4th largest natural gas reserves. By a large margin Russia is #1 in natural gas reserves and # 6 in oil reserves. They are sitting in a good spot. Incidentally Iran is top ten in both those categories also and we are soon to be lifting sanctions on them. Wait till they start making 100 + dollars a barrel. The US could help its own citizens if along with Canada they flooded the oil market but our bottom line doesnt seem to be of any worry to the ruling class.

          • 7
            7

Shouldn’t you be happy? We just stopped buying oil from Russia. We’re independent again!!

Biden is such a mess. He hasn’t even high fived Putin or withheld millitary funding to Ukraine yet to black mail them into investigating political rivals. What an old fart.

          • 7
            3

Because of our buying Russian oil we are essentially paying for the Ukraine war. Biden should be ashamed, impeached and expelled from the country!

          • 2
            2

The US government isn’t controlling oil production. We aren’t energy independent because the shale companies were massively unprofitable and when COVID hit it destroyed their business model. E&P companies largely shifted away from production growth and toward debt reduction/shareholder returns.

          • 10
            3

The government absolutely can control oil production and does. The keystone XL pipeline itself would bring 830,000 barrels of oil daily onto the market in a timely manner but it was shutdown by Executive Order. Specifically by Biden. Thats government control. So instead the Canadians are trying to truck as much as possible into the US. Anybody else see the irony here.? Shut down the pipeline over BS environmental concerns but truck it at 200 barrels a load. Burning hundreds of gallons a trip. The stupidity is almost breathtaking but you get what you vote for.

          • 2
            2

So you want us to buy more Canadian oil that gets refined in the gulf and then shipped to other countries which profits Canada and Corporations doing the refining while increasing the rate of environmental destruction.

You do know that Canada is not part of the US right? You were worried about our independence at the start of this now you want us to facilitate a pipeline that doesn’t even benefit the US economy?

            Cool

          • 3
            1

Jobs. I actually have to explain that to you? Why not buy it from an ally like Canada then countries that dont care for us much. Like Russia or Venezuela. Guess you like the price at the pumps when you buy gas.

            Cool

          • 1
            5

I don’t buy gas so it’s no problem. You should try it.

I also pay extra for electricity so I don’t use carbon sources.

You aren’t creating jobs with that pipeline. You are just offsetting domestic oil with cheaper Canadian oil and the number of jobs stays the same.

          • I live 10 minutes from work and use my old 93 Carolla that will still get me 30 on the freeway though I rarely use it on long trips. What is it you drive and how far can you travel before you have to recharge? There is definitely a place for electric vehicles though I do not expect to see electric semi’s weighing 80k any time soon.

          • Have you been paying more for everything at the grocery store? The cost of trucking, as in the cost of fuel to run that truck has much to do for why you are paying more for lots of things. The world runs on oil and literally thousands of products are made from oil. And all of those things are now higher priced because a barrel of oil is now $100+. So yep, much of the world does revolve around what you pay at the pump.

    • There’s lots of reasons and OH explained a big one. Another big one is we’re a democracy that is finishing up 20 years of war. The majority of the US doesn’t want to be in anymore wars (per polling) and we’re simply tired of conflict. In a democracy it takes political will and political capital to get a conflict going and it’s simply not there.

Ukraine also is not a part of NATO. We are under no treaty obligation to interfere. This is exactly why Putin doesn’t target a NATO country, Russia would get fucked sideways in an offensive ear against NATO.

They are hoping that the vast political backlash from the world and sanctions will destabilize Russia. It’s really not that stable of a situation. They use power and strength as their solution to literally everything. Ever wonder why the 2nd most powerful millitary on earth is using less than 200k soldiers to start WW3? It’s because they can’t pull more from all their militarized borders. Their best Allie among major players is China and their borders are some of the most militarized on the planet. They are Allie’s of convenience only, China already froze most lending to Russia after pressure from the west. This is probably the dumbest move Putin has ever made and he’s put his control in real peril for the first time in his rule. Russia has the 2nd most powerful millitary but the 11th biggest GDP. Average Russians are poorer than the average member of the EU. The money goes in elites pockets and to the millitary not the people. He’s playing with fire to show he’s a tough guy.

Nukes, Russia is happy to threaten nukes but if they ever use one the country is as we know it is done. Every nuclear power on earth uses it as a threat but no one wants to use them. All of them also have anti-nuclear weapons systems to stop nukes. If one is used the world will absolutely do everything they can to kill Putin the entire government power structure. That’s the best case, if they show willingness to nuke others the world may just decide to nuke them back. Russia can’t win a nuclear war. They would be getting shot at from every nuclear power if they break the truce. It’s a threat and power play period. Any country that ever breaks the nuclear truce will be quickly isolated from the world economy and leadership will be removed, period. That said until someone does it the chip is on the table.

The world knows Russia can’t afford this war if it drags out at all. Between an economy that can barely support its millitary spending, corruption and sanctions its simply not viable long term. It absolutely is heartless and fucked but at the end of the day allowing Ukraine to suffer while supplying support but not troops is the best move for the powerful people doing the math. Full scale defense risks nuclear war. Helping Ukraine setup a successful insurgency and bleeding Russia is the safe bet. Honestly I wish the world would just take out their whole upper tier with some nice wet works. The fuckers making the decisions that hurt average people deserve death, that goes for the US too.

      • “…Russia would get fucked sideways in an offensive ear against NATO.”

Exactly right. People who think Putin is trying to “resurrect” the Soviet Union right now are completely insane. The US Air Force would obliterate Russia if they stepped a foot in the Baltics, and Putin knows this.

The only concern for nukes are the unaccounted-for suitcase bombs. About 100 were reported as missing from Russia’s stockpiles. This, and massive cyberattacks, are really the two biggest concerns for escalation.

        • 100 is probably a huge over estimation. In fact there is no confirmed public intelligence that a suitcase nuke was ever developed. The smallest acknowledged nuclear device is the W48 artillery shell developed by the US and it had a yield of 72 tonnes of TNT. Nukes that small and light are just incredibly impractical and are just not that useful. For instance that she’ll weighs 120 lbs so the yield is 1300 lbs of tnt per lb. RDX is about 1.5 lbs of tnt per lb. This seems huge but the cost of a lb about $100 and the W48 would cost around $42000 per lb.

Here’s a list of all know broken arrows. There’s about 30 but I think only 6 are unaccounted for. Intelligence officials are pretty sure that 3 of the 6 were sold to China and Iran. The other 3 are just somewhere in the ocean.

    • US is apparently offering to evacuate Zelensky and his family. I imagine that could be logistically very challenging and would certainly anger Putin. Zelensky has thus far chosen to remain in place.

    • 1
      5

Russia does not have the capability to occupy a country of 40 million. What they are doing is wiping out Ukraine’s most valuable military assets because they know Ukraine can’t afford to replace them, even over the span of decades. Ukraine’s navy, air force, anti-air defenses, and radar stations are all destroyed. Bridges, railyards, and oil storage units are next.

Next, Russia will encircle Kyiv and trap Zelensky and his cabinet. Putin will give them an ultimatum: surrender and expel these X number of people, or the air force will level your cities like what happened to Grozny in the 90’s, shut off the electricity, and cripple food supply chains. No further action is needed as Ukraine descends into absolute chaos, like what the US did to Libya. SWIFT won’t do much because Russia already has huge reserves of gold, silver, and platinum that they can give to China in exchange for tech.

This is a no brainer for Zelensky. Surrender and agree to net neutrality. It’s not worth putting your citizens in harm’s way. The sooner, the better, because it would be a huge blow to NATO if their weapons shipments end up in the hands of the Russians. Based on how quickly Ukraine got invaded, it is clear that a huge portion of his military doesn’t believe in him. I can also guarantee that Russian soldiers don’t want to fight people they share a cultural connection to, but they have no problem destroying valuable shit.

Also, the US is hugely vulnerable to cyber attacks. The US economy was on the verge of collapse during the Colonial pipeline fiasco because refineries almost ran out of diesel.

  11. Something I noticed in the highlights from yesterday. Dernedde is really showing decent power this year. He had a homer and a triple yesterday. Did he show that kind of power last year?

  12. Are we a softball school now? Saw the Beavs took down a ranked Tennessee followed by Baylor in a double header yesterday, at the Mary Nutter Classic in Palm Springs, CA.
(Not to be confused with the Merry Nutter Classic, a Christmas themed adult film festival in Simi Valley, CA)

Exactly. Everytime a major carbon supplier pulls this shit it pushes the world towards renewables faster.

OPEC pulling their shit 4 years ago created the biggest solar boom in world history.

There are some new photos of Putin, he doesn’t look well. I thought his face looked bloated. Maybe he’s dying of something and doesn’t give a fuck? That would at least explain his bizarre behavior. It’s too bad, that there was not a large investment in Ukraine’s air force and anti-missile and air defenses, they would probably be winning this war if they had stronger capabilities there. It’s odd also that Putin has only invested about a third of his forces, they seem to be attacking on the ground in pockets and getting stopped. Ukraine has a fairly big army, numbers-wise as long as they are willing to fight and that appears to be the case. Javelin missiles are helping with the tank defenses.

Technical details of booting Russia from Swift are underway and it’s been agreed to in principle. This is a 3-5% hit on Russian GDP which is massive for a sanction. Typically sanctions are effective at around 2%.

  16. Pfennigs left in the 3rd with a possible injury. Kmartz has came in and been nails. Offense chipping away for 3 runs. Not 5th 2 on, 2 outs. Wheeler up

  17. Kmatz pitches 3 and a third. Ferrer comes in and cleans them up quick. Bot 6th.

Offense has been incredible this year but im very impressed with the pitching this year too. So far dorman has really cleaned shit up.

We’ve only given up 16 runs in 7 games and in an astounding shift only 2 HBP.

  18. Yes, pitching has been much improved, not only HBP but bb as well.
However, Carpenter just gave up a 3 run HR, Sebby now comes in with a 1 run lead, t8 with 1 out.

It’s all in the plan. No one will see us coming in the tourney and we will set a record for worst record of any team to ever make the NCAA tourney. #TinkleSprinkle

Pathetic interaction on the Beavs bench, tweeted by KEZI9 reporter:
Jarod Lucas gets subbed out after a bad couple possessions.

Asst coach Kerry Rupp gestures for him to take the sit near coaches.

Lucas ignores him. Says “I’m done”

Rupp responds “that’s the f***ing problem. Right there.”

      • He can go sell some more high school jerseys and move on if that’s the attitude. No reason to suck that bad no matter the talent. If they aren’t coachable then bring in other players. Really missing upper classman leadership this year.

      • 6
        1

Wow, but not surprising. Real uninspired performances by both hoops teams today. Not sure what’s wrong with the women, the victory over the Quacks delivered zero momentum.

  19. Good win for the Beavs. Not good hearing Pfennings was hurt. With Frisch already out, it really stresses the rest of the arms.

Hopefully all the injured guys can make their way back quickly.

    • It’s interesting how much goodwill an amazing three-week run can buy a coach. This guy had four top 100 players on this roster at one time and the most he could get out of them was a .500 record. Take away coaches’ sons and GP-2 and what has he done? I also think he’s thought of as a “good guy” because the media continues to defend him (although Canzano is finally asking questions).

        • Don’t know and it’s happened twice to Big Tinks. The other time he had his son’s injury has his excuse/protection, but the rest of the team was D-2 talent.

          • Unfortunately He will be allowed to keep his job. Probably 95%+ other P5 jobs his ass would be fired.

            But this is Oregon State.

Never in my wildest dreams did I believe this shit would happen after that last years run.

Every single returning player has horrifically regressed.

Lucas attitude yesterday if what I read is correct is pure shit. He shouldn’t be allowed to play again.

            Good riddance.

As far as I’m concerned most of them can hit the bricks. Coaches included.

          • The problem with Tinks is he’s a poor game coach that doesn’t prepare his team in practice and struggles to make in game adjustments. He is also a poor talent evaluator, motivator, and recruiter plus fails to develop talent. Other than that, he’s a great coach.

          • I was listening to the radio broadcast at halftime, I felt sorry for Mike Parker. You could hear the suffering in his voice, trying to remain professional while watching a slow motion train wreck in front of his eyes.

          • I like knowing that I can listen to the emotion in Mike’s voice right when I turn on the game and know if the Beavs are winning or losing in four seconds or less.

  20. Next weekends opponent UC Irvine took 2 of 3 from Grand Canyon U. Looks like it SHOULD be a series win but you never know. UCI has a Tuesday game vs SDSU. I don’t expect the Beavs game on Tuesday to happen with almost an inch of rain expected each day through Tuesday night. As I write this it’s fucking pouring outside.

Remember Long Beach State? Ranked #12 after coming off a series win at defending champ Mississippi State? Swept at home by Sacramento State.

The Hornets are now 7-0. They might be pretty good?

Stanford shutting out #2 Arkansas in the 9th.

    SEC! SEC! SEC!

I think we know Stanford is good this year but they seem to underachieve every postseason.

    • We have a series against Grand Canyon too so this will be a good measuring stick as the season moves forward. If we sweep UCI it will be pretty impressive.

      Go Sac?

    • From Saturday morning:
“In a classic example of “small sample size”, Nolan today predicts a Beavs sweep of the series vs ‘eaters by a combined score of 28-10.”

Now Nolan says Beavs take only 2 of 3 by a combined score of 19-10. He’ll likely revise that after Tuesday’s anteater game.

As mentioned, it is hard to sweep against decent teams, seems to me the most likely outcome is 2 of 3 for the Beavs, 9 and 1 to start conference play (assuming rainout tuesday).

What would that say about the ’22 version of Mitch vs the ’21 ?

Might also be worth asking if that record tells us anything about Dorman’s approach; the reduction in “free bases” has been a bright spot. FWIW: the per inning HBP rate has dropped from .15 to .03 and the bb rate from .44 to .37.

      • The change in plate approach and pitching approach so far has been pretty remarkable.

We were one of the worst BB/K teams on offense last year. So far, we’re the only PAC-12 team with a ratio over 1.

Not many coaches will get the opportunity Wayne Tinkle is tasked with – rebooting your own program. Obviously last year’s run was fluky given the larger trend and it got him a contract extension that gives him security for the time being – but dang.
Should be an interesting off-season after the worst season in school history. Maybe they’ll finally get a real point guard?

      • Are you talking about Riley 2.0, or after the 3-9 season when they went to the Alamo? The point stands – Tinkle’s tenure at OSU has been bad. Most coaches would have been gone by now, but he has to stick around and fix the mess of the program that he has overseen. This isn’t one bad year – its been a trend – with a weird streak at the end of last year. They weren’t great prior to the Pac-12 last year either. How do you get the players you need to improve to come here?

Listening to the Josh Worden podcast from the 2018 season, the Beavs really tried to blow the CWS. When Casey retired I thought of him as having such good sound teams. The 2017 team choked and the 2018 team basically did as well other than the Arkansas dropped fly ball. More terrible ump calls just like in 2017. It’s really easy to forget how lucky Casey was to have a third CWS title. Mitch has a long ways to go and the competition so far this year isn’t anything to brag about. The mental toughness will be what determines how far any Beaver team goes because the 2018 team had a ton of talent but they really were underachieving in the CWs (errors, lack of offense in some games). If you haven’t listened to the podcast, lots of good player interviews.

    • 2017 hinged on Casey not asking for review against LSU. 2018 was aided by Arkansas but that was far from routine and I’d say the team was pretty clutch after Arkansas left the door open. To win a championship, you have to be lucky and good.

    • It was an uncharacteristic Casey team outhitting everyone, not relying on small ball — absolutely loved it. Every team in that tournament including Arkansas has luck to go that deep….Arkansas was not the best team to win it all and would have been unlucky for the Beavs, to lose to them. Beavs proved they were the best hands down. I think multiple trips to the CWS in of itself showed how good this team was, the missed fly ball wasn’t luck, it’s just baseball.

      • Agree here with you guys. I guess I sort of saw Casey at another almost untouchable level but he too had his moments. Good to remember moving forward. Obviously he was an outstanding coach and mentor.

By the way, is NIL very common with college baseball? Moving forward, I could see it becoming more popular than college basketball for the entirety of the season. Maybe football too if it’s going to keep being the same 6 teams taking turns in the CFP.
