Miiiiiitch…………….!

Time to get back on track, boys. Final tuneup. Final chance to be playing their best ball at the right time. I’m concerned this team might be too inexperienced to handle the mental pressure that’s building. We shall see.

Go Beavs.

  1. Flavio OL juco was a nice addition for ‘22. Lee golden and tay Lewis up next. Let’s keep getting the juco guys and let them be angry and aggressive ?

  2. Sounds like 2023 Brady Nasser was blown away by his official visit last weekend. It was his first, but sounds like OSU set the bar pretty high for him.
Wonder if this is a sign of things to come with our new recruiting staff in place? Or just a product of Nasser not having any similar experiences to compare this visit against yet?
Anyway, sounds encouraging. And Nemec wrote the article, so even more impressive that it came off as glowing. I kept waiting for the wet blanket closing statement

    https://news.scorebooklive.com/recruiting/2022/05/18/3-star-edge-rusher-brady-nassar-on-oregon-state-beavers-official-visit-i-loved-every-minute-of-it

    • Any worry of the current 2023 guys decomitting? I keep seeing offers coming in for those guys even though they are committed.

      • Not unusual to keep receiving offers. I’m sure there’s always worry, but that comes with any verbal commit until signing day. We also keep offering players, so it cuts both ways.

Also, seems more and more unlikely Aidan Chiles will be the OSU QB for this class. After UW and Oregon offered him, he seems much less interested in the Beavs, after initially being very high on us.
Things change quickly and everybody wants what they think is best for them and their career. Hope we can wow him on his visit the way we did with Nassar. Of course he’ll be comparing against a UofNike visit, so will be tough to out schmooze that.

        • Sadly I called this several threads ago right after all the initial visit hype. Said Beavs found another one and it’ll be a matter of time before the others start offering. Long way to go obviously but kinda sad how we can’t grab our top qb choices.

          • Only chance is if his mom really wants him to go to OSU. Not saying she does but she seems very involved in his recruitment.

          • As far as education goes, he says he wants to study Zoology, so OSU makes sense.
But then Oregon offers and they don’t have a Zoology program, but he says he’s still considering oregon despite not having much to offer him academically.
I think that could be where mom steps in and helps keep him focused on his education goals, if he truly is passionate about that career path.
My guess is oregon will drop him as soon as a Jaden Rashada, Dante Moore or any other top tier QB gives them some hope that they’ll land one of them.

  3. Does anybody subscribe to the comments from AB posts to have them automatically pushed to their inbox?
I used to do that, but seems like the option isn’t available anymore as of last week. Or maybe I’m just not doing it right?
There used to be a “subscribe” button I would check

        • Probably similar to the current model. Play all of the north teams and all but 2 of the south teams if you’re in the North. Flip that for the South.
The chance to catch Colorado and Arizona in the same season rather than Utah and USC could be really impactful though. Why are we in a 12 team conference again? Trying to figure out what the benefit actually is vs the old Pac10 model.

          • Because base 10 numbers are for scientists and euro trash. We are Americans and imperial system rules all! Inches or death bitches!!

    • The headline directly below that article made me snort…
“Alabama’s Nick Saban goes in-depth on out-of-control NIL: ‘[Texas] A&M bought every player on their team'”

        • NIL may kill sports programs like OSU but that dude is completely laughable considering he had this to say about Bryce Young: “He hasn’t even played yet. Hasn’t even started … It’s almost seven figures. And it’s like, the guy hasn’t even played yet. But that’s because of our brand”

So out of one side of his mouth ‘our brand will earn you NIL money’ and out of the other ‘waaa, someone else is getting NIL deals for their players too’

          • All of a sudden Saban is all about the kids, what a hero…”We probably have 450 people on scholarship [in total] at Alabama. … Non-revenue sports [athletes] that have for years and years and years been able to create a better life for themselves because they’ve been able to get scholarships and participate in college athletics. That’s what college athletics is supposed to be. It’s not supposed to be something where people come and make money and you make a decision about where you go to school based on how much money you’re going to make.”

          • Coming from the SEC, that’s fucking gold.

            Pot meet kettle.

In principle, he’s not wrong. Some of us have been saying that same thing for decades. Buuuuuut,

Saban is pissed because NIL took away the SEC Super Nintendo cheat codes.

            What a douche.

Meanwhile the sisters of the poor get left further behind.

  4. Game day bishes!

Idk much about Ucla other than they’re wildly inconsistent. 2 weeks ago they got swept in Seattle. Last weekend they swept WSU in LA.

They, much like Tennessee haven’t played a ton of road games (18) and are .500 in those games.

I like the Beavs chances of a bounce back tonight with Hjerpe on the bump at Goss. Last weekend probably didn’t sit well within the program.

Hopefully Justin Boyd is back in the lineup.

What I know about UCLA is also lacking. Here’s what I got from their schedule, they look alot like the beavs but less polished. They have lopsided wins and losses and tight games. They can lose or win any day of the week.

The only real trend I see is when they play error free they are dominant. Well that’s more like a global ‘no shit’ of baseball.

Whatever, beavs are back in their town with their fake field and gloomy weather. Pitchers are gonna be pissed AF and defense will be sharp or we’re going to see a lot of new bats starting.

Beavs sweep it and lock down the conference championship score 18-23 over 3 games and giving up less than 10. Atleast 28K and 2 or less errors.

I feel like Nostradorkus now so let’s go with we sweep Arizona in the super regional and beat standord twice in Omaha before a 2-1 3 game series victory over TN ending with a Bazzana walk off grand slam after an incredible and heroric 8 inning 0-0 pitching duel featuring Jake Pfennigs, Sebby Reid and Mitchel Verburg.

      • LOL I like the new Nuc…sounds like most of my football preseason predictions over the last 10-15 years. I think Mitch will have them reset and ready for UCLA, as for the rest of the prediction, here’s hoping you are 100% accurate.

        Go Beavs.

If I’m right I’m an immortal wizard. If I’m wrong nothing changes and I’m still just a middle aged dork posting on a sports blog!

  5. In reading OLive’s series on the different position groups, it’s interesting that the Outside LBs are 10 to 15 pounds heavier than the Inside LBs. I wonder if this is a conscious choice to fit Bray’s scheme or just something random.

    • From the snippets I have heard and the spring game OLB are going to be doing a whole lot of pass rush. MLB/ILB will still be in gap control and run support.

Bray is going to go to a high pressure scheme mixing up formations between 3-4, 4-3, 4-4 and 5-2. All of those are going to be hybrid with the personnel we have but it the main theme will be lots of large fast dudes trying to get in the backfield.

I’m glad our secondary is going to be decent because they are going to be isolated a lot. Should be fine aslong as we are coming in quick.

      • Thanks, the OLBs blitzing a lot was kinda the only thing I could come up with scheme-wise. They are all well over 6 feet so they may be able to knock down a few balls as well.

        • I think it’s funny that our recruiting is essentially looking for tall athletic dudes who want to come to the mid valley and run with their arms sticking up at top speed. Freakazoid style football!

    • OLB can be heavier because they will switch into DE during passing situations. ILB have to play sideline to sideline so they’ll be lighter and faster. I think during passing situations, an ILB will be subbed out for a nickel back.

  6. One of the few 2023 players who had the Beavs in their “Top __” list committed to UW today. 4 star WR Rashid Williams from Pittsburg, CA area. He was supposed to visit OSU in early June but instead pulled the trigger on UW after visiting there recently.

  7. Big area for me this series is how much the 5-9 and bench players can help offensively. Great to have Boyd back…all the top guys have to produce for us to win games and UCLA doesn’t give free bases. Hopefully defense is tightened up again…runs could be scarce.

  8. Tennessee scores 21 thru 7 innings tonight. Stanford up 2-0 early. Beavs no hits and 1 error. It’s early but damn

  9. Did they find Frank Drebin for tonight’s home plate ump?
Every strike call is delayed, I can almost hear him say “….strike??…”

  10. They’re making Rajcic work. Almost at 90 pitches in the 5th. He’s starting to have trouble finding the zone and falling behind hitter. He’s not gonna last much longer.

Hopefully they’ll get to him or the bruins bullpen soon.

  11. Both pitchers grinding it out with not their best. The difference is Boyd not being able to field the ball off the wall clean.

  12. Well, it must be super hot in Corvallis too. 1 hit so far tonight. Feel sorry for Hjerpe. He has to be flawless to get a win. One would think giving up 3 hits in 5 innings you’d be out performing your opponent but sadly that’s not the case.

  13. Unfortunate. Bases juiced with 1 out and Beavs managed to plate just 1 run. Their starter has control issues and 116 pitches, had the opportunity but Fuchs strikes out to end the inning. Logan had fielders choice to score the 1 run. Offense is pretty stale.

  14. Beavs with 2 hits thru 7 full. 6 outs left. We’ve got a real murder’s row at the bottom half of the order. Fuchs at .248, gretler at .167, dukart at .244 and Dernedde at .205. Ouch.

  15. I’m kind of at a loss why you bring in a pitcher with a 6.64 era in a one run game in the 8th.

    You had other/better options

Kinda feels like ball game now.

  16. Dagger. UCLA knocks in another run in the 9th. 3-1 Bruins. They’ve scored more runs than we have hits. Just stole another base. Base hit scores that stolen base. Wow. The Beavs of the last 3 games might be lucky to beat a middle school tee ball squad right now.

  17. The Beavers are playing like #2, if you know what I mean. All UCLA runs coming from Beaver mistakes. UCLA looks like the better team tonight. Arizona was the better team last weekend. Perhaps their lofty ranking is not well deserved.

  18. Beavs apparently prefer to avoid the #1 ranking at this point, no need to create additional pressure now.

More errors and more walks, losing the discipline of earlier series wins at the worst time.

  19. Limping into the postseason. It seems like they’ve made more errors and hit and walked more batters than they have all season.

  20. Gotta find some guys for the bottom of the lineup. I’d expect Trosky to be in there tomorrow. Maybe Dukart at third and Trosky at DH.

Gretler has to come out, the defensive drop off isn’t as large as the offensive one.

    • We don’t have anybody for the bottom of the lineup apparently. Would have to assume that we would’ve brought anyone with a pulse in with 2 guys under .250 and 2 at or under .200. If we do and coaches haven’t, have to wonder wth the staff is thinking.

      • 1
        3

Losing Wheeler really hurt. He was the missing piece that made the offense elite. Idk if will be back this season but I miss his early season bat.

        • 3
          2

Excuses starting up. We all know injuries happen for all teams and injuries are not an excuse, etc, but with Mitch fading we’re seeing that temptation to blame luck/injuries over our coach begin to pop up!

          • Not an excuse. First 8 games we averaged 11 rpg and against zaga 11.5.
After Wheeler was injured we dropped to 7.5 rpg and 7 vs zaga.

Guess we just don’t have the athletes to fill a 4.5 rpg gap.

Love to hear what other reason there is for the sudden and consistent drop in offense if the Injury isn’t key?

          • 3
            3

Not mentally prepared for tough teams and the pressure packed part of the season, likely due to a young team and Mitch “leading” by psychoanalysis. If you’re a Beav ballplayer here you are thinking ahead to the post-season, etc, and you’re beginning to see your collapse vs good teams and question things. It’s natural. Manager has to figure out a way to combat that. That’s his job. Everyone knows the best lineups, etc. The hard part of managing is the mental side. Mitch seems more interested in figuring out their childhood trauma and being a stand in dad instead of getting them mentally ready for this battle.

          • I think we’re just seeing how the Beavs stack up against higher end teams finally. The front end of the schedule was relatively easy compared to the back end. Stanford was the lone higher end early series and we lost that one too.
So top 3 finish in the Pac sounds about right. Will still land in that range, but the gap between 1 and 3 will be very thin.

          • He came back but I don’t think he was ready. Still hoping he can come back in the post season but his injury is a hard one and theres also a big mental aspect.

  21. Beavs saw their performance last weekend and says “hold my beer”. Well bottom of lineup was pretty terrible as usual but then the whole offense was. Kind of on fumes. Appears relief pitching is reverting to early season form…or at least Carpenter has for sure. He’s been pretty bad last several outings. Doesn’t seem like there’s any energy on the team. Maybe I’m reading it wrong but have gotten the “golly gee” kind of vibes from the team and coaches. Gotta step back and acknowledge that this team has won 40 games but man, playing like this is going to lead to a quick post season.

  22. 7
    4

Oh man Mitch lost 3 games in a row in a season we have had 40 wins and are guaranteed a post season. He sucks so bad guys, we should fire him. Did you know he only has the second highest winning percentage of any coach since 1921?!? FFS he has only gotten us to the post season 2 of his 3 years coaching. The fact that he couldn’t make the post season in the covid year really shows how bad of a game manager he is.

If we don’t fire him soon we’ll just keep fading away on the national scene until the program is shuttered and we’re just a funny footnote in the history of the college game. What an embarrassment to the legacy of Pat Casey.

If we don’t win another game this season well be tied for 8th most wins in over 100 years of baseball. Idk if I can even wait tell the end of this series to hurl myself off the slowly ascending towers of the new Reser Stadium, the only thing holding me back is I can’t figure out which one would be a better last view of the fallen Goss Stadium at historic Coleman field.

Y’all get a grip. We have lost 12 games and have 40 wins. Most of you spent the off season talking about Mitch’s ceiling and the inevitable fall into insignificance. Mitch is doing great, adjustments all season have been strong, we’re in the last grind of the toughest part of the schedule.

  23. 4
    1

“…the last grind of the toughest part of the schedule…” very accurate and everyone saw it coming on the schedule back in April. So why the panic? Nuc is spot on with the ridicule for those who are shouting the sky is falling.

Mitch has the program in a great spot and the future is going to be as good or perhaps better than Casey with Casey’s own guys running the show in his likeness. All is well in Corvallis, no panic in spite of a couple. of losses. Beav fans should have a bit more staying power than jumping after 3 losses…

    • 1
      3

Some real concerning offensive trends though that have been taking place over the last several weeks. Most the season people would be saying this is a high powered offense, etc but in the words of Corso…”not so fast my friend!” Currently tied for 3rd in runs with a 4(?) run lead over Cal. Another performance like last night and dropping to 5th is a real possibility. Hits: they’ve dropped to a tie for 6th. Doubles: 3 way for 5th. Homers: 8th. RBIs: 5th. Strikeouts: 9th. Batting avg: 6th with a .001 lead over Cal. They still lead in walks (by a decent margin but was much higher 3 weeks ago) and obs. 1st in obs but 5th in RBI? Ouch.

This was the tough stretch and I think people were expecting some losses but if we lose the Stanford series, the Zona series and UCLA series…what does that point to? We beat up on “inferior” competition but when we face “real” competition we lose? We swept the Ducks late season so that was a great result obviously but i definitely wouldn’t want to face Gonzaga again right now. Also, let’s not forget that every other team has had the same long season and had to play the same teams in conference so we’re not unique but definitely a rough stretch to have to go through.

So is it panic time yet, 3 games isn’t, but what about 4 in a row? Or 5? I’m also curious who steps up next year to be the offense for this team? 80% of our offense will likely be gone next year with Melton, meckler and Boyd leaving. I believe Forrester will be back as he has 1 more year of required time if I’m not mistaken. So Bazzana and Forrester will be the key. Trosky I think has had enough run time to see that he should be a solid .275+ guy but who else will make the step up? Fuchs? Gretler? Dernedde? All 3 have been…not great. Guerra shined in 1 game and not so much since then…limited opportunities though. Anyway, expectations are high for the team…as they should be for successful programs.

      • 1
        1

Check the schedule out. We stopped being high powered after game 8 when Wheeler went down. We have averaged 4.5 rpg less since then. Our offense is basically good/average now.

        • Yeah, I mean some drop off from early season to be expected since the runs were crazy high the first 3-4 weeks but some of the recent results are fairly eye opening amd it feels like the losses aren’t close. Seems to point out that we beat the mid to lower tier teams but when we go against good teams the results are, at best, middle of the road. I’m probably missing a team but Oregon and Zags are 2 higher clubs that we did very well against, although I’m glad we faced the Zags early as I’m not sure how a full 3 or 4 games vs them shakes out right now. Just think this is an incredibly important game for remainder of the season. A loss and I think they get swept. How’s the confidence going into Pac12 tourney on a 5 game skid and series sweep at home? Or even losing the series and you’re 2 and 4 over last 6?

      Thanks for this link krol.
Great read and makes me appreciate a down to earth guy like GP2 much more. He is a dramatic contrast to the entitled athlete, even though he grew up in an NBA household. Interesting how people are still just people with normal problems, thoughtful perspectives after all of the fanfare is set aside.

Now that we have some good data points for the year I want to explore the out athlete claim a bit. Lets look at the roster and where these guys came from. Is the current roster really just better athletes or are they being developed? I’ll list the details and you guys tell me who the athletes are and who got developed well. Note: 500 overall on PG basically means not in the top 500. They only do national rankings to the top 500.

    17) Jayce Easley SS, #245, Draft RD 5 2018
    18) Bryant Salgado RHP, signed 2021 draft round 14. Miss that dude.

There’s a bunch more in 2018 that transferred or no showed but you get the idea.

Overall I don’t think our roster is really that talented compared to other post season regulars. What do y’all have to say?

    • Gonna lose if we can’t bunt the back door slider into the with some force. We’ve really been hurt by fisting at the plate so hopefully Mitch gets that in check. Overall I hope to see plenty of beavs out on the field having a good time and not getting too wet. Oh and we need to really watch the spray charts to keep UCLA out of our vulnerable gaps.

  25. Krol, saw an article on current commit Dorian Thomas, relates to your question about possible decommits earlier in the thread.
Sounds like he’s still planning on an official visit to OSU, but also OSU coaches are changing up their offensive philosophy and how they intend to use him, so he’s giving a look at other schools that are interested in him too.
Namely the Arizonas and WSU at the moment. WSU hasnt offered but they are his childhood dream school. And he’s visiting Arizona soon.
So….good chance he wont be a Beav much longer

    https://247sports.com/Article/Pac-12-schools-still-pushing-for-TE-Dorian-Thomas-187730543/

    • Thank you for thinking of me.

Don’t we have two decent TE in that class right now?

They are changing how they use TE. Like they might throw them the ball more or even less???

He committed early so too bad, thought he was really in love with the program but things change.

  26. Wilson weber is the DH for this game. Freshman catcher from Gresham. Gretler and Dernedde at 3rd and short. Tanner Smith starting at catcher.

    • Weber is projected to be an absolute stud. Extra base boiler, high .300 hitter frosh/soph year but kissed junior due to covid and mostly did camps and stuff senior year. Some projected him as the starting catcher before he was injured. Smith and Weber coming in was a big part of the Nath for Claunch and Hamilton transferring.

This could be a huge deal for our post season but you never know until a guy has seen some D1 AB.

  27. Announcers also commented that there wasn’t any energy by the beavs last night. I said “golly gee ” attitude but no energy also works.

  28. UCLA pitcher at 56. His two biggest outings this season are 71 and 72. He’s a good pitcher so be nice to get him out.

  29. Oh goody. Another error. Throwing error by dernedde. Lead off runner goes to 2nd. On a positive note, we do have 4 hits tonight. But we’ve also stranded 4 so that hasn’t changed.

  30. Sorry, that was stupid base running. Where are the fundamentals? Two outs, you’re going to most likely score from second anyway.

  31. Forrester, a good ball player and leader; big mistake on the basepath! Out of character and out of the inning.
    Desperation setting in.

  32. It’s astounding how bad at hitting the last 4 in this lineup are. Dernedde is one more out away from dropping below .200. Gretler batting .165. Smith .226. Can’t blame the new DH as he’s a freshman with 0 game experience but he’s 0-2. Like our lineup either bats above .300 or sits at .200 or below. Meanwhile UCLAs lowest avg is .260.

Also, I’d give dernedde another error as I’m typing this. Triple pumps on a throw to 1st and the runner is safe. WTF is going on with this defense?

  33. Oh lord. Townsend comes in and throws 4 straight walks. 2 on and 1 out in 5. Hope I’m wrong but I think UCLA opens it up here.

      • Took too much time to get back into the batters box. No idea if it was a good call or not. But that was the call.

  34. Speaking of out athlete good lord UCLA’s last class is loaded.

PG #24, #36, #43, #45, #81 (signed Rd 4), #164, #195, #211…you have to get to their 9th recruit to get to 500 overall. That doesn’t count some of the transfers they got like Kenny Oyama.

  35. Emmanuel Lewis strikes again

Stanford killing USC. Better figure out a way to win this thing tonight

  36. 1
    1

Wow, another swiped bag by UCLA. I don’t recall the last time we actually threw someone out. Seems like Zona and UCLA have taken them at will. And it comes around to score on a base hit. Brutal but on par with last 4 games.

  37. Was that play at first on the go ahead run Mitch’s chance to fire up the team by getting tossed? Replay looked like Forrester may have got him.

  38. to the 9th. Melton and Boyd will come to the plate in the last of the 9th. Gonna need Verburg to put up a zero first.

  39. Stanford absolutely buttfucking USC 16-1 in the 7th. These scores hold and Stanford clinches a share of the title and will be the 1 seed in the conference tournament

      • Not disagreeing. They’ve let it slip away these last 2 weekends.

Remember how some here said we hoped those 9th inning losses to bottom feeders ASU, WSU and Cal wouldn’t come back to haunt the Beavs? And were chastised for that opinion?

3 outs away from that becoming a reality.

    • If your hoping for a miracle in the 9th we have the right part of the order coming up. Wish they would just take advantage of the abundant chances though.

  40. Well we’re fucked! Nice time to get the hit by batter stat increased. Team is in full meltdown mode the last two weekends

    • Just too many walks, HBP and mental mistakes these last 2 weekends. Unreal and just I don’t get it.

Think I heard Parker say 20 free passes against UA last weekend. 15 walks and 5 HBP. WTF????

        • “all the stuff”……that’s the problem, having an off series in baserunning OR HBP OR fielding OR LOB OR whatever can be overcome, BUT falling short in several areas just cannot be covered up.

  41. Gonna be a sweep tomorrow. Beavs look defeated. This lineup has been atrocious. We’ve got 9 hits tonight and none are outside the top 4. We’ve brought 8 to 9 other batters to the plate and not 1 hit. I think that’s 2 nights in a row. I can’t bring myself to get the box score from last night. It’s got to be close to a statistical anomaly to have 13 hits in 2 games and they all come from the same 4 players.

  42. Team has played awful the last 2 weekends but a big issue that has finally caught up to them is how often for as good as they can be at times offensively, they have long stretches in games where the offense is nonexistent and it really is baffling. Just like tonight, offense starts fast and then just disappears. They got away with it for a while cause the starting pitching was as really strong when Jake came back but it hasn’t been the great last 2 weekends and the offense hasn’t locked in. Not a good look for Mitch either that when these guys have gotten punched in the mouth in games, they’ve had a tendency to wilt and show next to zero fight late in games when they’re behind

    • He just turned 20 so he will be eligible next year. Now we just have to hope they don’t get someone better.

Unless OSU really improves our batting next year Furd and UCLA probably are the front runners in conference next year.

      • I was thinking 2019 when the Beavs played like shit the last month of the season and went 2 and BBQ in their own regional. Yuck.

What looked great a week ago? Now looks like complete and total ass.

          • Yup last year we dropped 5 of the last 6 series against Furd, Zona, AZ State, Irvine and UCLA. All those teams were more talented than us last year except maybe Irvine who lost their regional to Stanford in 5.

  43. 1
    1

Welp, going into tomorrow here is how things look……..

    Stanford 20-9
    UCLA 19-10
    Beavs 19-10
    Oregon 17-12
    Arizona 16-13

Stanford has clinched a share of the Pac-12 title, has the 1 seed in the conference tournament locked up and can win it outright with a win or a Beavs loss. Beavs can no longer win it outright. Best hope is to share it with Stanford but would need to win and Stanford to lose at home tomorrow to last place USC. Pretty unlikely IMO.

Beavs and UCLA are tied for 2nd. Winner of the finale Sunday finishes 2nd and will be the 2 seed in the conference tournament. Loser is the 3 seed.

Oregon will be the 4 seed after winning the series against UA and the ‘Cats will be the 5 seed no matter what happens tomorrow. Those two teams better get used to each other as they will open the Pac-12 tournament against each other Wednesday morning in the first game.

At the moment Cal leads Utah 11-2 in the 8th. That result holds and 6-8 spots in the tournament are locked up between ASU, Cal and UW. The only thing to be determined tomorrow is the order. ASU won both series against Cal and UW so they’d be the 6 seed tomorrow if they win vs WSU. Cal won the season series vs UW so they would win a head to head tiebreaker. However, too many scenarios to list them all and I’m too lazy tonight. But one of those 3 will be the Beavs first round opponent in the conference tournament on Wednesday. Beavs game will either be at 4:45 (if the 2 seed) or the nightcap if they lose tomorrow (45 minutes after completion of the 4:45 game).

Man, what a shitty last two weekends. Beavs better fucking man up tomorrow and salvage what’s left. Still in good shape to be a national seed. Will be a regional host no matter what happens.

    • Alright, fuck it………Cal leads Utah 18-2 now in the 8th. Pretty safe to call that one, soooooo

      UW 14-16
      ASU 13-16
      Cal 13-16

If ASU and Cal both win tomorrow, ASU is the 6 seed, Cal 7 seed, UW 8 seed.

If ASU wins and Cal loses tomorrow, ASU is the 6 seed, UW 7 seed, Cal 8 seed.

If Cal wins and ASU loses tomorrow, Cal is the 6 seed, UW 7 seed and ASU 8 seed.

If they both lose tomorrow, UW is the 6 seed, ASU 7 seed and Cal 8 seed.

      https://www.reactiongifs.us/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/everybody_got_that_spaceballs.gif

      • personally I want no part of UW right now. Despite the level of competition they’ve played. They win tomorrow they’ll be on a 12 game winning streak and have a sweep of UCLA in their back pocket to start said win streak. I’m not convinced the Beavs could beat them right now with the direction both teams are trending. Rather face Cal or ASU.

But, my drothers tell me it will be UW. Luck O da Beavs

    • I don’t understand why Canham completely changed the lineup and puts a freshman at dh for his first collegiate at bat in a game you need to win the title. Imo speaks to desperation on his part. And takes Barney off of first base for who knows what reason. One of the premiere programs in the country and they hire an unproven coach and it’s pretty evident that he’s in over his head.

      • The desperation was really evident putting in Logan to pinch for Smith. Weber is not ready to play behind the plate yet in his rehab. Having Logan pinch meant we were one injury away from having no catcher available at the end of the game. That was a really huge gamble.

They definitely don’t know how to win against better talent.

        • Does seem like guys have been playing tight. Couldn’t have a better option on a coaching staff for keeping things loose yet professional than Darwin.

  44. 5
    1

If UCLA wins tomorrow, we’ll drop to 3rd. Lol. Holy shit. Talk about an epic meltdown. Still might not be as bad as last year as that was more like 5 weeks of meltdown. Can we start a petition to shorten the baseball season to 2 months? That seems to be our sweet spot. Perhaps I’m too pessimistic but I’m not seeing anything here over last 4 games to suggest they’ll get the win tomorrow. I don’t think I’d want to play USC right now. Sad.

Definitely a little scared about this offense next year. Bazzana and Forrester can’t do it by themselves.

  45. The team needs to find another gear Worse than losing games, they don’t look like they can’t “take a punch” anymore. No expectations at this point – hoping they can hold on so they don’t have to travel to a super regional (if they make one).

    • Out athleted and shook. He’s a bad coach, only 40 wins.

I will say that his teams definitely can’t punch up yet when they are against equal or greater talent. Adversity coping ability isn’t there yet.

        • No, your claim all season is that they are elite athletes beating up on everyone. They aren’t and when they are up against greater talent they don’t have the scrapper mentality that comes with adversity.

From what you have been harping on Mitch does less with more when the reality is hes doing good with good. if you expect a coach with 2 years under his belt to have the same ability as Casey after a 12 years of struggle then you might as well not talk about baseball at all.

  46. On the plus side, softball won their regional opener against THE other OSU.

And men’s hoops picked up a transfer from Arizona State.

  47. and as of tonight the mariners are now 8 games out in the division. And it’s not even Memorial Day weekend. Looks like I could’ve predicted 15 games out by the all star break and trending towards being correct.

      • The division doesn’t matter. They weren’t gonna win that anyway. They are 4.5 back in the wildcard. That being said they will likely be 10 back in the wildcard by the ASG. I need to start rooting for other teams. Mariners sucks, Blazers suck, OSU sucks lol. Maybe it’s not Mitch’s fault and it’s been me the whole time.

        • Lol. No man. This is what makes the fans in the northwest a rare breed. The ability to keep taking L’s. It’s too easy to root for successful teams.

  48. Don’t know why they bothered with a seventh playoff team because of the lockout. In the AL that team is likely to have a losing record. Pretty fair bet in the NL as well.

  49. Hey Angry was Pat Casey a bad coach too? You hold Mitch to hire standards in his first 2 years than you did Pat in his 20th.

  50. 1
    1

Will the Beavers lose out on becoming a national seed and hosting a regional? Will they win another baseball game this season? How quickly things can change the last two weeks of the season!

  51. Some perspective on the late season swoon: In 3 of Hjerpe’s starts, Beavs have lost when he had a perfect game into the 7th (Utah), dominated Stanford for 10 innings, and allowed 1 run to UCLA through 6. Whether that is on the offense or not, I think it is somewhat “just baseball” to have 3 losses n those type of starting performances, My hope is the “just baseball” odds will begin turning towards the Beavs favor as they enter post-season. At this point, Pac12 tourney is not a priority, but they should be preparing for regionals/super-regionals and Omaha. Defnese and pitching hav ewon championships but the trend lately is poor defense and bad bullpen outings. FIx those things and the Beavs still have a great look at Omaha.

    • I’d agree for 1 game you might run into the opposing pitcher who’s also throwing a perfect game (exaggeration) but 3 times? Honestly though, I think he’s been lacking run support for a majority of the season. Kind of points to the offense not being great outside of 4 players. Our bench and bottom order guys are better than lesser squads’ day 2 and 3 people and bullpen but I think we’ve seen enough this year to know that they’re not better than even decent talent in the Pac. We’ve got starters and regular rotation players batting below .200. At least two players below the mendoza line. 2 others below .250. Its insane. UCLA for example, their worst hitter in the lineup is better than our last 4. Hard to fathom.

  52. Get your lottery tickets! Dernedde with a double. Would’ve been a triple if not for the open bullpen area in right field. Bottom 4 will not go 3 games in a row without a hit.

  53. Go back to the store and get more lottery tickets! We’ve got a Fuchs base knock! OMG. Change your shorts. Dukart with base hit. WTF?!! Hell has frozen over. We will need this to happen more often than the lunar eclipse but very encouraging to see the bottom half contributing. Can’t win without it.

  54. Sign of the times in the digital age. Orioles are printing up souvenier ticket stubs to hand out to fans exiting the game today, for Adley’s first game.
Not sure if I like the fake ticket stub or not

      • I just dont like the idea that most guys dont have ticket stubs, but then when the #1 pick makes his debut, everybody in attendance gets a keepsake that they’ll most likely hang onto.
Still would be cool to have one

    • And Beavs 2 losses to Stanford were both in extra innings, 1 point loss each…both teams won 20 games…pretty close season standings for 1st and 2nd.

Good Christ. Stanford with 41 runs in the series sweep of USC. Wonder if the USC coach said “Hey, what’s your deal?!?”

      • Not correct. The Friday and Saturday games were both extra inning, 1 run games that they split. They Sunday game the Beavs jumped out to a 5-0 lead and Stanford then scored 8 unanswered to win 8-5 and the series.

  55. Miiiitttch!!! Out athleting and psychoanalyzing this team into scoring 9 runs in this game instead of saving the excessive offensive output for next week. When will we he ever learn.

  56. WSU sweeps Sparky. That locks ASU into the 7th or 8th seed and UW into the 6 or 7 seed.

All depends on the Utah/Cal result. They are currently tied at 8 in the last of the 9th.

Wednesday opponent will either be UW or ASU

  57. Cal walks it off in the last of the 9th.

Cal is the 6 seed, UW 7, ASU 8. Tournament matchups are (in order)

    Oregon/Arizona
    Stanford/ASU
    Beavs/UW
    UCLA/Cal

Beavs will play at 4:45 on Wednesday.

  58. It is funny how the PAC12 isn’t acknowledged on ESPN but Beavs stay at #2 RPI after 2 weekend debacles, Tenn and SEC is still getting all of the attention and not much awareness of anything beyond SEC for most of the college baseball world.
Is it a benefit that Beavs are in PAC12 or is it residual program respect ala Duke/Kansas that Beavs are given the benefit of the doubt after such a horrendous closing week?

Casey is a miracle worker after all to create such a perspective nationally for OSU baseball…

    • Yes the Beavs are getting the “blue blood” treatment….it is nice for sure, but hopefully Stanford and UCLA pitching are that good, and Beav bats go bonkers in the big tournament.
Stanford has underperformed in the tournament over the passed 10+ years. Probably why they get overlooked too.

  59. Softball is up 5-1 in the top of the sixth against Ohio St. Win and at least it gives them a chance to take two from UT.

  60. New MBB commitment (ASU transfer) with an impressive offer list: “Florida, Oklahoma, TCU, Cal, Oregon State and Washington State, among others”

I’ve seen him alternately be described as a SG or a wing. Sounds like he is a scorer first and foremost, but has a well-rounded game.

    • And women’s golf just had their Pac12 tournament, so you were probably watching a rerun to boot.
      Pac12 Network at it’s best

  61. 1
    1

Well that was one way to go into the postseason. Don’t need to analyze much, the team shortcomings was mostly mental.

PAC12 tourney is a double elim format with a winner take all title game. Beavs are playing for seeding in the top 8 national seeds. Win the tourney or make the title game and it’ll solidify the #2 seed. Tennessee has done enough to hold the #1 seed no matter what they do in the sec tourney.

I think the beavs should approach this no different than a week with a mid week game for pitching. Meaning Hunter starts the first game followed by the regular rotation on Thurs, Fri and sat. If they make the title game coming from the winners bracket, they can start pfennigs on sun as the team that wins it’s first three games gets Saturday off. If coming from the losers bracket, throw whoever is left.

All but one team will be going into the regionals with a win but the beavs can’t go in losing two in a row.

Min expectations is to get at least two wins.

Many of the top 8 contenders have to play each other in their conference tourneys so it’s hard to see 7 teams pass the beavs for a top 8 seed since some will be eliminated early.

    • I don’t know. The Beavs should be top 8 seed no matter what. If they win 1, it’s a lock IMO. Win the tournament and it top 2

    • I don’t THINK the Beavs need to win any more games to be a national seed.

      No 2 Overall RPI
      No 13 Overall SOS
      No 1 non conference RPI
      no 9 non conference SOS

I know those numbers aren’t the be all, end all but looking at the top 12 teams, I’d say it’s almost a lock. But to be safe? Beat UW.

    • Just for fun…….

Of the top 14 teams RIGHT NOW, looking at the numbers here are my own personal observations of the top 8 national seeds……(In no particular order)

      Locks

      Tennessee
      Oregon St
      Miami
      Virginia Tech

The other 4 based off numbers

      Louisville
      Stanford
      Auburn
      Southern Miss

I struggled with the last one (Southern Miss) but would gave it to them based on the following comparing their numbers to the last 6 teams considered,

No fucking way should Vanderbilt even be considered for a national seed. Losing conference record and 9-16 record against Quad 1 opponents.
No fucking way should Maryland even be considered for a national seed. 101 SOS, 127 non conference SOS and only 7 games against Quad 1 opponents (3-4 in those games). Inflated record playing in a garbage 1 bid conference.

Can’t justify Dallas Baptist since they finished 3rd in their conference and overall record of 33-20-1
Georgia Southern, 6-11 against Quad 1 opponents. Finished 3 games behind Texas State in conference.
Georgia has strong numbers across the board but that .500 record in conference play makes them a no
Wake Forest also has strong numbers but there’s already 3 teams ahead of them in the ACC pecking order for national seeds.

  62. Looking at the numbers………

Currently the ACC (11) and SEC (9) have 20 teams probably safely in a regional. There are 31 conferences (31 auto bids) which leaves 33 at large bids. Take away the 2 conference tournament champions from those 2 conferences and 18 of the 33 at large bids would come from the ACC and SEC.

20 of 64 teams from those two conferences. Almost 1/3 of the field.

  63. Curious how Beavs can be so high in SOS, RPI, both no-conference and overall, but still be “exposed against the better teams in conference. I think if those SOS/RPI numbers have any legitimacy, the Beavs are in great shape for seeding and prepped for post-season success.

I’ll hold out hope for a focused turnaround from what has been the last couple of weeks.

  64. D1 baseball has a new field of 64 projections out. Still have the Beavs as the No. 4 national seed. Stanford is No. 3. Also has Oregon hosting a regional and paired with the Corvallis regional. Wouldn’t that be fun if that came to pass and both teams made it through? A civil war super regional???

They project North Dakota St, North Carolina and Grand Canyon in the Corvallis regional. UNC comes to Corvallis? The beavers love ending the Tar Heels season. Granted they’d have to beat Grand Canyon first and that’s no easy task.

UCLA a 2 seed in the South Bend regional and Arizona a 3 seed in the Louisville regional.

    https://d1baseball.com/columns/2022-field-of-64-projections-may-22/

I think D1 will start doing a daily projections starting this week

    • and they finished it. 3-1 final. Tip of the cap to the Lady Beavs for coming out of the losers bracket and winning the Knoxville regional.

  65. 10

I didn’t realize they’d already beaten Tennessee back in February. Took 3 of 4 from them for the year. Guess that turned out to be a good draw and they certainly did not fear UT.

    Congrats Ladies. Beat Stanford.

  66. Ending up in second place in baseball is a huge disappointment after being in first place the entire season. I know the goal is Omaha and a national championship, but it’s nice to have one of those conference championship banners to hang on a wall to help impress future recruits. That was an epic meltdown at the end of the year. Hope they got that out of their system play well in Scottsdale and kick some ass in the NCAA’s

    • They picked the wrong time to lose four straight games for sure. Be nice to see them win the P-12 tourney and get the momentum going again.

  67. Things that would be nice to see this week,

Gonzaga – Win their conference so they have a shot to host. The more west coast teams hosting means more east coast teams having to travel a long ways and also possibly sending previous reg season opponents like Grand Canyon to other regionals.

Top BIG12 teams losing early in their conf tourney. Helps Gonzaga’s cause to host.

  68. Sort of off topic. Two candidates to become the next president of OSU are on campus today. Both are dean’s at other schools, haven’t been president’s before. No experience with dealing with athletic departments.
