Well, somehow the Pat Casey Head Baseball coach has gotten the Beavs into the PAC Tourney. What of it? A chance to rebuild momentum? A historical opportunity to win another banner? A possible 6th game vs quacks?

The tourney schedule is linked below, who do you want to see matched against the Beavs? What should the rotation and overall strategy be? Who should be given AB’s to get ready for the NCAA’s?

GO BEAVS!  (leave the black jerseys at home)

  1. At this point I’d like to see them go for it, as long as they can keep there starter on regular rest for the regional. I don’t think they are a lock to be a national seed if they lose to Washington

Football single game home tickets just went on sale this morning. Might be a good idea to jump on them early with the reduced seating this year. I picked up 4 pretty good USC seats, don’t even know if the date will work, but figured I can unload them pretty easily later if it won’t.

Anybody know when the Montana St game goes on sale?

    • Should be soon. Season ticket holders have bought their tickets. Once they allocate the tickets, then the rest should open up.

Learned that the Portland game vs Montana St will be sold exclusuvely via Seatgeek. Not on sale yet and no date known yet either.

          • Surprisingly, the USC game was just priced as an average Pac12 game. I guess because we have Oregon at home too.
Also, only Civil War seats for sale were the club seating area.
I wonder if the student area is being reduced to make room for more paid seats? Would be too bad because the students are the only ones whoncam be counted on to bring energy to the stadium

      • Actually applied for season tickets and paid for the seats but still haven’t heard a peep from the ticket office. That place is all around not run like a business, more like a group of people trying to keep it all together with no clue.

    • Per Daschel in an article last week:
The Sept. 17 game vs. Montana State at Providence Park is not part of the season ticket package. But season ticket holders are currently able to purchase tickets for the game. Tickets will go on sale to the general public June 3.

From Bill at the last of the previous thread:
“Sort of off topic. Two candidates to become the next president of OSU are on campus today. Both are dean’s at other schools, haven’t been president’s before. No experience with dealing with athletic departments.”

I thought Ed Ray was a great President for the University and did wonders to expand OSU’s Academic footprint in the State and garner National and International recognition in certain Academic fields. With that being said, he could have cared less about the Athletic Department and left that up to the Athletic Director. While ultimately the Academic side of the University should always come first, I think F. King Alexander would have paid more attention and helped the Athletic side more. He really got the shaft and I think would have made a great all round President for OSU. Unfortunately, I don’t think we will be getting a President of Ray’s or Alexander’s experience or caliber. Scott Barnes will still have to steer the Athletic Department. Barnes has surprised me though. He still comes across as a used car salesman and I truly didn’t think he’d stick around this long but he has gotten the expansion of Reser done and a number of other lesser projects. GO BEAVS!!

      • After watching Barnes interview on blowing up Reser I wouldn’t be shocked if he either started more renovation projects or moved on to be ceo of a demolition company. He really really enjoyed pushing that button

My theory as to why baseball has more superstitions surrounding it is because of the slow pace and dead time during games. The brain starts to wander about odd things like how socks carry magical powers that influence the game.

    • It’s an exacting game where pretty much everything matters. Humans are built to break complex things down into simple ideas and to find patterns. Superstitions in baseball and all sports are exactly that. Get 3 hits when you do the same thing each time or wear a lucky jock, now it’s a part of getting hits.

Just sitting down to watch it on the dvr. Don’t spoil it!

Breaking Bad was without a doubt the best show I’ve ever watched. This show is up there too.

  5. Beavs are offering quite a few 2023 guys from Texas the last couple of days. Wonder if this is the Robert Cole Moore connection (new recruiting coordinator we hired away from U.Texas recently to replace Yray)

  6. Won’t see Hjerpe the first game. More than likely Hunter will start and the mid-level pitchers from bullpen will pitch later innings. This will save better pitchers for later games. Unless we get in trouble the first game.

Hitters…. who knows… Team has 3 or 4 consistent hitters, after that very sporadic. Depends on who shows up.

    • Congrats to Jacob and well deserved. But how the fuck was Forrester a first teamer and Justin Boyd honorable mention? Boyd left off the first team is a slap in the face.

I’m not convinced Logan should be a first team selection either. The rest of it I agree with.

    • A surprise to me but Hjerpe does not win pac12 pitcher of the year.

Williams from Stanford wins it. Based on conf stats, he earned it.

Stanford nearly sweeps all individual accolades. Pitcher of the year, freshman of the year, defensive player of the year and coach of the year.

  7. “We hadn’t gone through any adversity all season,” assistant coach Darwin Barney said. “This will be good for us. The guys will learn from it.”
As quoted by Eggers, this too:
“Garret flew out deep, went in and had a peanut butter-and-jelly sandwich, and then he hit the next one out,” Canham said with a smile. “He’s squaring up balls. He’s getting good pitches to hit and taking good passes at them.”

    https://www.kerryeggers.com/stories/postseason-starts-wednesday-for-beavers-who-made-the-regular-season-a-special-one

    • So we have scientific proof that if he eats a peanut butter and jelly sandwich he will hit a home run! Why would he not eat a peanut butter and jelly sandwich before each at bat.

  8. Aiden childs picks up more offers. Beavs leading the pack again in offering someone then bringing in the others. Cal, Oregon, UW, WSU, Kansas State offered recently too. Hope we have a few back-up options in the back pocket.

    • Recruiting isn’t even worth watching anymore until the last 2 months before signing day. It used to be fun, now it’s just another version of watching us lose.

      • Haha, this is so true. Even the last 2 weeks are going to be filled with L’s and then we’ll flip some kid from Colorado School of Mines and look for ways to call it a W.

        • Colorado School of Mines won all but one of their conference games and two championship games for. CSM won mostly by lopsided scores and mostly over schools you’ve never heard of; lost a close one to Valdosta State (Georgia) in the playoffs. Maybe there is a hidden gem there!

    • Just waiting for a school to give him an NIL deal and we will finish 4th place in his recruiting. Maybe we can make his top 5 or something cool like that.

    • Nm. Parker just said on the air Bazzana hurt his wrist sliding against Ucla. Could be back by Saturday if the Beavs stick around. Should be good to go for the regional.

  9. Bases loaded balk and a fielders choice. 2-0 good guys after 2. They’re making Engman work. Almost at 50 pitches already.

I am not real well versed in the balk rule. My only understanding is you have to step off the pitching rubber before making a throw to an occupied base. Bill? Can you explain what Engman did wrong there?

    • At least 3-4 years ago college baseball banned the fake to third and throw to first move. Think MLB did as well. If a pitcher steps off with a runner on third and moves toward third, they have to throw it or it’s a balk

      • Engman moved towards 3rd and then faked a throw to 3rd.

BTW, I forgot to mention I found this last week on the rule changes for 2021 and came across this…

“An illegal pitch or quick pitch with the bases unoccupied cannot be made by the pitcher or else a penalty will be called.”

        https://thebaseballguide.com/ncaa-baseball-pitching-rules/

So, I was wrong and you were correct on the Verburg pitch against Arizona

  10. Didn’t feel great about the Beavs chances in this one with Townsend as their main long option out of the pen. He is bad. Conference tournament format really isn’t all that beneficial for the top teams. Just hope they don’t blow through their arms trying to come back and win this tournament if they lose this game with regionals next week

    • I’m not conceding defeat. Yet. Other than 2 guys the huskies pitching is trash. This could end up like the Friday night game in Tucson.

However, UW is on fire and a confident team right now. So there is that.

      • Not conceding is a good move given that Dernedde is able to knock out the huskie starter with a leadoff double in the b4
        Even Parker is brightening up.

  11. Outside of Ferrer, Ryan Brown and maybe Verburg are there any other arms in the bullpen you’d trust?

    • I feel like Boisvert has pitched fairly well but I’ve only seen him a few times so perhaps I’m wrong. Definitely hasn’t had enough time this season so not sure I’d be going with high pressure situations. Sebby? Lattery? Not sure really…was mostly a strong suit of theirs for like the middle of the season but to start and the last 3 series they haven’t been great in general.

        • Thought I heard Canham say on the pregame show he’d been hurt and they were bringing him back slowly?

Something along those lines. I was only half assed paying attention.

    • Sebby has been pretty good. It’s a pretty small group of trustworthy arms though. Carpenter either looks good or is a complete disaster. That’s why their 3 weekend starters have got to be good in the postseason cause bullpen options are limited

  12. 6-3 now. 1st and 3rd, nobody out. UW going to the bullpen again. At the very LEAST the Beavs need to get another run in this inning.

  13. This is the best the lineup has looked in a long time. Not sure there has been a bad at-bat yet. They look pretty locked in. Showing some serious mental toughness to come right back

  14. Dernedde hits into a bases loaded double play. Disappointing but important to get back in this game and take the lead. Could be a lot of runs tonight.

    • Probably gonna take at least 10 runs to win this one.

Beavs need to have a lead late to avoid facing Raeth.

      • Yeah Wash pitchers struggling with walks, definitely take the pitch and put pressure on him with bases juiced. Did Washington a huge favor there.

  15. Fuchs really just only provides the occasional walk. He’s really not bringing anything else with the bat. When Bazzana returns, he should not play. Trosky is pretty obviously better. He made the switch to Jake at third and come regionals, hopefully he makes the same switch with Trosky at DH.

    • You’re right, but still that 2 out single by Fuchs adds pressure to huskie arm, Duckart seals the deal with his third hit; now Trosky has a chance for a 2 out RBI…or more off of a new arm.

  16. Ride Ferrer as long as possible. If he falters go to Ryan Brown.

Hopefully the Beavs can tack on a few more runs.

  17. Forrester finishes a P-B&J, comes up with Meckler on 1st, nobody out. b7
And……..BINGO, 2WP’s and a sac fly makes it 11-8 Beavs!

  18. Both teams have just burned through their bullpens tonight. UW moreso. Parker said on the radio broadcast that Cal/UCLA cannot start after 10pm. Nit sure if that’s true or not but would benefit the Beavs if those teams would have to play 2 games tomorrow.

  19. Wasn’t easy and the Huskies were a tough out. 13-8 final. Another bizarre game in Arizona, but stay in the winners bracket.

    That’ll do Beavs, that’ll do.

  20. What an ugly win but a win is a win. Hope Melton is ok and no other injuries.

Really need Hjerpe to go deep into the game tomorrow. I would say Verberg and Townsend would be available tomorrow. This would be for tourney experience, throwing back to back days. Even it’s for just a batter or two. Guys who haven’t done it before tend to struggle when they are asked to do so.

  21. Verburg picks up the win, that’s baseball………at least the third win this season in which he really didn’t perform like a winner. Not sure he is really back, hope to be proven wrong over the next few weeks.

  22. Beavs should absolutely be a national seed after tonight no matter what happens.

Hopefully Ferrer, Bazzana and Melton are ok.

If not. Lose and regroup for the regional.

    • RPI 2
      SOS 13
If that isn’t the record of a national seed………….well what does it take?
I don’t see another 40+ game winner with a SOS better than 35

      • RPI 2
        SOS 13
If that isn’t the record of a national seed………….well what does it take?

They don’t play in the SEC or ACC.

Texas A&M has worse stats and they’d be a national seed because they won their division in the SEC. How is it that 8-12 teams from a 14 team conference can make the tournament? Are they that good beating up on each other? Or is the deck stacked against everyone else???

Honestly, right now I’d like to see how the Huskies would fare against a middle of the road SEC or ACC team. Unfortunately, that won’t happen. Something does need to change.

  23. As written after the Beavs fell behind 6-2. Beavs outscored them 11-2 after that.

I’m not conceding defeat. Yet. Other than 2 guys the huskies pitching is trash. This could end up like the Friday night game in Tucson.

However, UW is on fire and a confident team right now. So there is that.

  24. 4-0 Cal after 5 innings. I don’t get it. At all. UCLA looks like a completely different team than the one that won a series against the Beavs this past weekend.

  25. Assuming the injuries aren’t anything serious I think this was a solid win. UW was desperate and threw the kitchen sink at this game. Beavers were looking ahead and planning for the entire tourney. Only real bummer was running Browns pitch count up a little high but maybe he is good for one more outing in addition to the championship game should we make it that far.

  26. FWIW:
D1 has Beavs hosting Gonzaga, Grand Canyon, and North Dakota State.
    Stanford also hosts.

Also in their field: UCLA, Arizona, quack

  27. The Melton injury is a hamstring thing that apparently has been lingering per the linked tweet above in chat. If true, as much as you’d like to bring your best out there, perhaps sitting Melton might not be a bad thing? Even if they don’t win the tourney you’d think the rpi and schedule would still warrant them being a top 8 seed.

    • Conference tournament is proving to be a crappy idea.
Injuries to key players. Scheduling that has teams playing till 1:30am.
What are the positives that come from all of this?
Maybe Cal making the tournament if they stay hot? But that would likely come at the expense of lower seeding for the other Pac teams. Yay?

      • Besides, I guess TV money is the only point of these tournaments (even basketball) to give non-playoff teams one last chance to qualify? We Beav fans were the beneficiary in hoops two years ago, so sometimes there is a payoff, but for a lot of teams it seems pretty pointless and as others have said comes with risks.

          • Right, they’re paying themselves to run Pac12 conference ads after midnight. Probably costs more just to keep the facilities open all day and pay people to staff everything.
And only around 2k people in the stands to watch games. A good chunk of that is family getting their tickets comped.

          • I’m not sure how they make money since most of the ads are pac12 related. I guess the fees from cable companies is significant enough to not need advertising dollars.

          • I think it means very few advertisers are willing to pay for advertising on the network, so they’re forced to play filler spots to fill those empty gaps.

  28. Beavs game will probably get the super late start tonight. Winners get a valuable day off.

I think Mitch again will play to win tonight to get that day off. Hjerpe as long as he can go. Then Sebby and even brown to close out if needed.

  29. Ok, this Oklahoma State slugger. Dude has hit some serious moon shots this year and just went to the upper deck at the Rangers’ stadium last night. The sound it made off the bat with the dome ceiling shut was loud. Lol.

Good, I noticed how the announcers were still pumping Quack regional hosting during the Beavs game last night. Must be some announcer prerequisite to work Oregon into any P-12 game. I would think two and out would put that to rest.

  30. Ucla didn’t start their Friday guy today or yesterday. They aren’t exactly super secure if they go two and out. If other conferences steal bids, UCLA might be bumped out.

  31. This UCLA/UW game is only in the top of the 8th.

Doubtful that Stanford/Arizona first pitch will be at 4:45 as scheduled. That’s gonna push back the Beavs game further. Depending on how long they go, Beavs may be looking at a 9:30 start time. Or later.

Hope our boys slept in today, cause it’s gonna be a late night. Winner gets tomorrow off.

    • Positive is that it’ll be cooler. Players may not cramp up as much.

Trainers need to have the players drink a cup of Gatorade between innings. Keep them hydrated and prevent cramps. Once the cramps hit, they don’t go away.

  32. Leg humpers peeing all over themselves. Now down 13-7. Bases loaded and Nobody out in the top of the 8th.

Pretty sure their pitching staff is shot between last night and today.

  33. Stanford today’s PAC-12 version of the ‘90s Atlanta Braves. Lots of league titles but disappears in the NCAA tournament. Would be nice to see Beavs and Cardinal in the CWS.

    • Stanford went to the cws last year. Which was their first since 2008. So your statement does have some merit.

      • Yeah it was a stretch comparison. The Cardinal don’t have the “magic” like the Beavs do — am I the only that thinks this, or am I comparing the programs with their own history too much?
Different year, different teams I get it, but Stanford will have a lot to prove me wrong….would be nice to see them eliminate a couple of SEC teams in the tournament.

        • For about a 10 year period until last year? I agree. They always seemed to flame out…..

          2010 – 0-2 in Fullerton regional
2011 – won Fullerton regional, lost at UNC in supers
2012 – won Palo Alto regional, lost at FSU in supers bigly
2014 – won Bloomington regional. lost at Vandy in supers
2017 – Lost to Fullerton in Palo Alto regional
2018 – Lost to Fullerton in Palo Alto regional
2019 – won Palo Alto regional, lost at Mississippi St in supers

  34. Lineup is posted: Logan goes again at C, Melton resting leg is DH, Fuchs in LF, Dukart/Trosky/Dernedde same as last night.

  35. The beavs are better than Cal in every statistical category except home runs and slugging %. Don’t give up the long ball tonight and they’ll win.

Need Hjerpe to go 6-7 innings.

  36. Mercifully the game finally ends. Stanford wins 15-8. Game ended at roughly 9:30. Beavs and Cal first pitch will be roughly 10:15.

  37. Boyd starts it off with a single. Beavs visitors so things will have to move along if Cooper is to get those 3 K’s by 10:30.

  38. Warriors back in Finals. Will GP2 have luck o’ da beavers and miss the finals?

I wonder how many father/son combos have played in the finals?

  39. That smile by Hjerpe. Lol. Dylan Beavers had already struck out about 6 pitches earlier.

Wasn’t a strike but probably a make up call. Take a seat Bubba.

  40. Cal is fouling off a shit ton of pitches tonight. Hjerpe already at 74 pitches through 4 innings. Tied at 1

  41. You wonder if they’ll let Hjerpe go longer tonight since he’ll get an extra day rest before regionals. 74 pitches through 4. Normal week he’d be on track for 5 maybe 6 innings with his pitch count up.

  42. There we go! Boyd doubles off the wall. Meckler brings him in with a triple to the gap.

2-1 good guys, top of the 5th.

  43. Hjerpe been walking the tightrope all night. Gets out of a bases loaded jam but at 103 pitches through 5.

Gotta give credit to Cal. They’ve been battling and fouling off a fuck ton of pitches tonight.

  44. Hjerpe’s night is done. Reid Sebby in to pitch.

And gets 3 outs on 6 pitches.

3-1 good guys heading to the 7th.

  45. Excellent job out of the bullpen by Reid Sebby. Player of the game. 4 shut out innings and only allowed 1 hit.

Beavs win 3-1 and get a well deserved day off.

    That’ll do Beavs. That’ll do

    • Great! I fell asleep Beavs up 3-1 in 7th and woke up to shitty 12 best UNike football players on PAC-12 Northwest…..yuck!

  46. YES! Was more worried about extras than a loss. Almost wonder if you call it “good” at this point and start mixing in some other players to give the starters more rest with at least two more games to play. Even playing at night, four games in four days in 90 degree heat will wear you down. Next game will start noonish, going to be brutal. Then a potential rubber match to get to the final on Sunday.

    • Beavs are in good shape to reach the title game. Still have Kmatz and Pfennings.

Ucla and Cal will have to play another game burning through arms.

No matter what happens Saturday and Sunday the Beavs have a national seed locked up.

    • First game I missed this year. Something about 10:15 midweek starts is just shit?

I say we start twittering to have Goss and PK host the tourney next year. Good weather, full stadiums, two parks so all games are prime time. All the money stays in conference.

      • Threat of rain delays probably won’t allow it, but 2 stadium model does make the most sense for this many teams.
They were saying on the broadcast last night the Big 10 tournament went even later, luke around 2:00am. Also they were playing at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, which seems like a bit of an unfair advantage, giving their teams time to acclimate to that field before the world series starts.

      • Yeah, desert baseball makes sense in the spring. Too hot this time of year. Of course memorial weekend in the PNW can be hit or miss. San Diego is probably the best bet.

        • 2 stadiums and good weather or covers is a must if they actually want people to show up. I think you should also be hosting in a baseball city where people will go for fun.

San Diego, Bay Area, LA would all work. Scottsdale blows and in late May its death.

          • Well, I live here and it’s definitely starting to get a little warmer but as far as facilities go, there’s so many options for spring training facilities but I suppose it’s spendy to try and grab 2 of them vs utilizing 1.

    • Very Pac12. It’s all about the kids, I’m sure.

These pac12 dumbbells can’t seem to get out of their own way.

One park, 100+ temps, >10pm start times, holy shit what a cluster.

  47. Let’s be honest, I don’t think they would have to turn away many fans at any of the Pac-12 venues given the tournament attendance – biggest problem is hotel rooms for the teams.

    • 2
      1

That would almost make it worth attending this gates of hell tournament. Having to abuse the roster and follow up with the zags would further show the idiocy of the pac ‘brain trust.’

    • Brutal indeed. They need to send Grand Canyon to a Texas school regional at least for the sake of variety as GC has already played OSU, ASU, UA, and Stanford and a large number of West Coast teams (UC Irvine, San Diego, Cal State) w a 5-4 record against the PAC. Texas would be much shorter distance to travel for the kids — isn’t it all about the kids and needing time to focus on their studies?

    • The committee tries to keep teams from traveling too far for regionals. So if there is no other host on the west coast, someone gets stuck with Gonzaga.

But if beavs take the title over Stanford, it probably would flip the seeds but maybe not where the zags go. But if they do take their tourney title and aren’t hosts, it’ll be hard to justify sending them to Corvallis or Palo alto.

      • Gonzaga/San Diego at 3:30 today. Winner is in the title game.

Would also like to see Grand Canyon win their conference tournament. Maybe move them up to a 2 seed instead of a 3 and send them to some other regional.

If both those teams do wind up in Corvallis the good news is they’d have to face each other first. There’s a good chance one of them would eliminate the other.

  48. Another big game to watch tonight is Virginia tech vs north Carolina. Winner advances to the acc semi finals. Loser is done in the acc tourney.

If the Beavs advance to the finals and v tech loses tonight, they’ll pass VTech in the national seeds.

    • Gotta love this time of year right? Even though these tournaments are horseshit, might as well accept it and enjoy more baseball. I’ll be glued to all of these games tonight!

  49. The Sunday final is THE final right, regardless of the number of losses? So even if Stanford plays the Beavs and both teams are undefeated, it’s only one game?

  50. 9

I have some tragic family news to share. One of my cousins has committed to play for the Ducks.

Please respect my family’s privacy as we seek healing and navigate this difficult situation.

  51. Zags lose to San Diego 5-3. They’ll have to come through the losers bracket.

Cal with an early 2-1 lead over ucla

    • Gonzaga now has to turn around and play Portland in am elimination game tonight. Winner will play San Diego tomorrow for the WCC championship but will have to beat them twice.

  52. 11

Softball is up 3-0 already. Stanford is batting in the bottom of the second.

OT- My oldest son signed an LOI/scholarship to play soccer for Clark College in Vancouver, WA. Never thought I would have a college athlete in the family. It will be interesting to see if he makes it to a four-year school. I don’t have to worry about him becoming a Duck unless they “suddenly” decide to add soccer based on the Beav Men’s success.

    • Congrats… When you consider the 1000’s of little kids that start any sport at 5 or 6, the number that make it all the way to any level of college is remarkably low. Assume you will be able to attend most of his matches in the fall.

      • Thanks, PBH. Yup, especially the Saturday matches. He was on the road to receiving an offer from a 4 year NAIA school but at 21k a year tuition and him not being sure what he wants to pursue educationally, he decided JC was the best place to start. The ironic thing is that he’s getting a better financial package at JC!

  53. Cal up 7-5 in the 5th now. I think we’d rather face the Bears again considering,

Max Rajcic has not pitched yet in the tournament. Guarantee he would start tomorrow against the Beavs. Their Saturday starter Ethan Flanigan started against UW yesterday and went 4-2/3 innings throwing 76 pitches. Their Sunday starter Kelly Austin also pitched against UW going 1-1/3 innings throwing 19 pitches. He also started tonight’s game and went 3-1/3 innings throwing 58 pitches. He likely won’t be available tomorrow.

They would def start Rajcic in a game 1 and piece together a 2nd game. We have Kmatz and Pfennings on a weeks rest for 2 potential games tomorrow. Cal does not have the pitching depth of UCLA.

    Agree? No? Thoughts?

    • Bad base running by the lead runner first and then the trail runner.

Lead runner got caught being aggressive. Smart play by the Stanford ss. Trail runner did what she was supposed to at first. If lead runner in a pickle, advance as far as you can bc most likely they will be out. Then trail runner got dumb and left to go back to second. If she stayed on the bag, only one runner would have been out.

All of this just says, where is the third base coach?

    • Lol! I was just thinking the same. I hope they play 17 innings and the game doesn’t end until 2am

  54. Gonzaga eliminates Portland. They will face San Diego tomorrow for the WCC championship but will have to beat them twice.

  55. And Grand Canyon loses to Abilene Christian. They’ll play again tomorrow with the winner advancing to the WAC championship.

  56. https://d1baseball.com/postseason/2022-field-of-64-projections-may-28/

No change in the projection today but the door is still wide open to move up a slot or two. Being the 2 or 3 seed would mean they’d be on the opposite side of the bracket from Tennessee.

I don’t think the Zags will host even if they win out now. The RPI just isn’t there. Needs a lot of help.

These teams need to lose to help a zags bid.
LSU, Georgia Southern, Oklahoma St, Texas Tech, and others who are on the hosting bubble.

  57. Here’s the ideal day today, it won’t happen but we can dream

Stanford loses the first game to Arizona in extras. Second game also goes to extras but Stanford wins.

Beavs beat UCLA in one game.

  58. Cats make it interesting and had the tying run in scoring position but Stanford holds on 5-4. They’re in the title game.

    • UCLA has not posted their lineup online but according to someone on twitter it is James Hepp getting the start today and not Max Rajcic. Unless they’re sandbagging.

Hepp has pitched all of 4 innings in May and has an ERA of 9.00

  59. Yep. James Hepp on the bump for Ucla. Freshman with only 4 innings total this season.

    Punish this kid, Beavs.

  60. I will never understand why they keep throwing anywhere close over the plate when ahead in the count….makes no sense!

  61. Is the P-12 Network truly unable to sell normal advertising space? I’ve managed and owned various businesses for over 30, I have no idea how they make any money? I’m now assuming they don’t.

  62. Fuchs has killed us. He swings and misses to much. He just swung at ball 4. I cant believe we cant put someone else in that produces
    more than Fuchs.

  63. 4 bases loaded walks = 4 unearned runs. FFS. Look I get that they’ll have another shot at it this evening if they can’t come back, but Boisvert and Lawson as the first two out of the ‘pen? Neither have been anything to write home about this year.

Who would start the 2nd game???

  64. This team is going to go 0-2 in the regional if the pitching doesn’t improve significantly from not just today, but the past few weeks. They don’t have the offensive firepower top-to-bottom for me to believe they can rely on outscoring every opponent.

  65. This ump is so inconsistent — seeing a lot of good pitches called balls for both teams. Wouldn’t be surprised if this game ended with 25-30 runs scored.

  66. …and commentators wondering why UCLA is pitching anywhere close to the strike zone against Fuchs….will take it! My goodness dumb pitching strategy on both sides of the ball right now.

  67. I’m sorry but Lawson is fucking terrible. There’s a reason why he’s pitched very little this season.

There’s a long way to go and this game is not over. At least give yourself a chance to stay in it.

      • Nope. Lattery coming in. See if he can fare any better. Probably the only off limits pitchers in this game are Hjerpe, Kmatz, Ferrer and Sebby. Unless you get to the late innings with a lead. I’d rather have tomorrow’s plan as Kmatz then Ferrer. Gotta get to tomorrow first.

    • “”It’s amazing,” Berg said in a pre-Supers interview. “They talk about the bad apple ruining the bunch, it really is true. You get rid of the negative people and bring in a good group of young kids who really wanted to change the culture, and that was one of the things that they said.

“We sat down September 15, when we’re allowed to start and said, ‘This is what we want.’ And I said, ‘Okay, then what is the culture? I have my idea what it is and what I think it should be, what are your ideas? And we just sat down there and we talked about it. I remember it being in our hitting facility and it being a really long conversation about this is what it’s going to look like and you have to hold each other accountable to it. Because you can talk it, but if you don’t live by it, it’s not going to mean anything.”

        • Quite a few players it seems as she ended last year with only 7 players on the team. Added 2 transfers and the rest freshman. Glad Hammoude and Mazon stayed.

Maybe Berg should chat with WT at the end of the year?

          • “Maybe Berg should chat with WT at the end of the year?”

No shit. Might learn something about team chemistry

  68. Gretler 2 RBI single, smart move by Miiiitch to bring him in to help out athlete the Bruins.
19-10 Good Guys, on to the b8

  69. Half surprised Pfennigs got the start today, probably means they are switching him to be the #2 guy and Kmatz #3.

Interesting by doing that, they are asking Kmatz to pitch in clinching games or to keep from getting eliminated.

  70. Errors up and pitching is baaaaad. Regression? Or just a bunch of third and fourth stringers going at it?!?!? Stanford gonna tee off tomorrow.

  71. I’m more and more impressed with Forrester as a team leader. Just watching his conduct at mound meetings and his interaction with the pitcher at the end of an inning is impressive.

    • Yeah, dude doesn’t get overly excited, just goes out there and continues to be a very hard out. He was slumping big time at the beginning of the year, and probably seeing the best out of all the hitters right now.

  72. DJ Carpenter is so bad. Ferrer, Brown and Sebby are the only reliable relievers right now. Lattery once he shakes off the rust too but Carpenter and Verburg just look like they belong nowhere near a regional right now.

That last walk was ridiculous right now though. At least 3 of the 4 pitches caught a lot of the plate. Ump changing his strike zone in the 9th is very cool

  73. I cannot fucking believe what I’m witnessing. You can’t hold a 9 run lead and get 3 outs you don’t deserve to win

  74. Unbelievably non-competitive pitching. Double clutched, bad throw. Logan hurt. Good Lord, you can’t make this shit up.

  75. I honestly say they ought to just bag this piece of shit of a tournament and forfeit. Between the heat, game times, absurd umpires, and players getting hurt….fucking just leave now!!!

  76. The chances of blowing a 9 run lead in the 9th is damn near impossible but they did it. Pitchers and Dorman can walk back to Corvallis after this tournament is over

    • It’s not all on them, this umpire’s strike zone is right down the middle of the plate, the size of a dime about 1 inch above the knees. If you try to paint the corners, you get nothing. Sure the Beavs benefited but this fucking game is the worst I have ever seen. You can tell when a dozen batters on either team pause after a normal would be strike, but realize it is a called ball. This umpire has had a horrible night, along with the pitchers on both teams.

      • I don’t know if you are watching the P-12 broadcast, but the analyst was starting the question the umpiring a few innings back and Roxy Bernstein started defending him, saying he is regarded as one of the best umpires in all of college baseball.

  77. Pitchers had been doing that step off the rubber and fake throw to 2nd the entire game. Please tell me there will be a different umpire behind home plate for game 2

    • The common denominator is that fucking horrible umpire. He let about 30-40 strikes go by as balls. Just the worst officiated home plate I have ever seen! Pfennigs had at least three pitches that would be strikes under 999 out of 1000 umpires calling it. Come guys, the pitching was bad, but this umpire forced the hand!

  78. 1
    2

That game was hilariously dumb. For those pulling out their fire Mitch signs remember that Jon Savage played just as shit a game as coach. Should UCLA throw him out?

That was the dumbest game and the irony that Kmatz starts in 35 is so hilarious

    • UCLA has absolutely nobody left to pitch, so I’m confident the Beavs will go up big but with basically nobody reliable out of the pen, it’s gonna be hard to watch late

    • 3
      2

More revealing than dumb… 13 runs in last 2 innings. UCLA has played one additional game, too.

Game represents a HUGE red flag for Dorman’s ability to develop competent pitchers.

      • No, this is about 75% on the umpire. Come on man, look at the stats! Nobody hits that good, even with shitty pitching….the umpire forced his tiny strike zone on this game, 25-22 says it all!!!

      • No it doesn’t lol. It was a ridiculous game. Those players will likely ever be in something that dumb again. It’s an outlier not a trend in any way.

  79. Per Bill an hour ago, …they are asking Kmatz to pitch in clinching games or to keep from getting eliminated.
So, do ya put him in that position in a half hour for the second game today? And deal with a possible game vs Tree tomorrow when tomorrow comes?
Whoever starts, they will be key; got to break Bruin momentum quickly. And, minimize use of BP.

Beavs home team for second game at 7:25pm…….put on the coffee (and whatever additives you prefer).

  80. I was in the pool here in AZ periodically checking the score. Wtf? Lol. Wow. Guess the bull pen is going to get some experience today.

  81. Worst part about the game wasn’t the loss but the Logan injury. Offensively the drop off from him to Smith is significant. If he’s out next week or longer, it’s gonna hurt a lot.

    • Fuchs-Boyd-Kasper in the outfield. Big park/less experienced players…….could see some Bruin Xtra base hits if Dorman’s guys don’t up their game.

    • Both teams are out of gas. It’s not like Beavs are the only ones with injuries and exhaustion.

Good thing us Debbie downers aren’t being called upon!

  82. 2
    1

some teams, coaches, programs never recover from a loss like that. Case in point: Mike Riley/OSU football after the 2009 Civil War. Program still hasn’t recovered almost 15 years later.

  83. At 2:28pm I said: “ This ump is so inconsistent — seeing a lot of good pitches called balls for both teams. Wouldn’t be surprised if this game ended with 25-30 runs scored.”
Boy was I wrong….47 runs for fucks sake!!!! I knew something was really wrong when Fuchs had that clutch base clearing double.

  84. So I haven’t been tuned in much today with other things going on but it kind of seems like Beavs are really beat up. Melton injury seems worse than was being relayed as he’s been playing DH last few games. No Logan. No Meckler. Pitching somehow regressed even worse than early season. Hope these things are minor but kind of stacking up to be an early exit from the post season. This offense runs through 4 players typically and if meckler and Melton are out or relegated to small contributions, it won’t matter if we’re a top 8 seed. Will save us from a long trip home I guess. Anyway, it honestly would probably be beneficial to lose this game and at least get another day of rest in.

    • Not that the four players mentioned aren’t the key, but others seem to be coming on: Fuchs 2 hits in early game, Gretler 3, Dernedde 2, Dukart some nice AB’s lately as well.
      Tryin’ to stay positive

  85. This tournament alone we have 5 injuries. Melton, Meckler, Boyd, Ferrer and Logan. In a tournament that wouldn’t help or hurt our chances of hosting next week.

  86. I can’t blame them for holding guys out. It was an exhausting game. Hopefully they are available for late game at bats.

  87. Fuchs a SacFly brings in Bazzana with the oven-mitt slide into home. Beavs up 5-0 after 2 innings……..got it made, right??

    note:Fuchs/Smith/Dukart account for 4 RBI’s out of 5

  88. B4 Forrester and Melton on 1&2 with no out, for momentum sake gotta get run(s) out of this.

Too bad, Fuchs, Kasper and Smith not able to bring anything in.

    • The same moron that thinks the rules don’t apply to them and takes Fido into Safeway, Home Depot or a restaurant. Been living in Oregon long?

      • Only 15 years. Yeah, here everyone is a moron dragging their dog everywhere, and while I almost had it out with a dude that had his dog at suds once, never have seen a dog at goss.

  89. Pretty ugly 1,2,3 inning there by Fuchs, Casper and Smith. Beavs up 3 but it feels tenuous at best. Been able to watch the last few innings and UCLA seems more confident and collected despite being down 3 runs. Hope I’m wrong but my gut is saying these 3 runs won’t hold. As I’m typing this ucla gets a leadoff hit by beating a throw from Dernedde. That was sharply hit…maybe he double clu5ched the throw? Anyway, stupid shit like that has plagued this team the last month. Wow. Now a sliding attempt at a fly ball in right and it goes to the fence for an rbi triple. Guess my gut was right.

    • Lol. Sadly what you say is true. Honestly, losing might be the best thing for them. Hate losing and you want positive momentum but I think this team vs Stanford tomorrow would get stomped badly. Last 3 weeks has been pretty rough.

  90. Tie game. Wow. Beavs look defeated. Wouldn’t be surprised if ucla hangs 4+ more runs before this one is over. Can you throw in the towel?

  91. Yup….hats off to what’s left of the team. This tournament fucked Em up. If Beavs lose I’ll be glad the shitshow is over….way passed time to move on….good night! Jesus Christ!

  92. There’s nothing left in the tank. Let the chips fall where they may because neither of these has any pitching left to beat UCLA. Unless UCLA decides to unleash Max Rajcic. I’m curious why he has not pitched at all this weekend. Saving him for the regional?

  93. Beavs have some serious question marks for the post season. We need more than 3 pitchers. Wtf did Dorman do to his staff this last month? No more juice? Hope we pulled our guys for health precautions otherwise this squad might not score any runs if Melton, Boyd and meckler can’t play. Logan was just getting hot too. Legitimately would have 7 guys in our starting roster batting below .250 if those 3 truly can’t play. Unfortunate when scoring 22 runs can’t win you a ball game. Lol. Yikes. Anyway, fingers crossed we don’t incur any more injuries over these last 2 innings and head back to colder weather.

  94. Gonzaga and Grand Canyon both lost today so neither will win their conference tournament. So it’s pretty likely Gonzaga winds up in the Corvallis regional as the 2 seed. Grand Canyon will likely be a 3 seed and will wind up in Corvallis, Palo Alto or in regional in Texas. Luck o da Beavs though they’ll probably also wind up in Corvallis.

UC Santa Barbara will most likely be the 2 seed in Palo Alto.

  95. So why wasn’t that a balk???? UCLA pitcher did the same thing Ryan Brown did in the first game TWO times before even throwing another pitch.

Answer? Because it wasn’t a balk. In the first game nor in this game

  96. It is what it is. Even if they lose 25-0 tomorrow. Welcome to the world of conference tournaments.

Give me 9 guys who can pitch 1 inning each at this point.

Stanford is certainly rested and the team to beat. If it gets out of hand early? Big picture and let it go. Beavs have a national seed locked up

  97. Well that was exhausting just watching one game. Good thing I chose not to watch the second.

On one hand winning really depletes the arms, but on the other hand, winning after that marathon was good. PAC12 might want to look into the acc model. Max 4 games for teams that make the final.

So I think Sebby gets the start tomorrow. Then anyone else whose arm is still attached. Lattery, Quinn, Grewe, Case, position players.

Mitch does not have to play to win tomorrow. Anyone with the slightest injury should sit. Try to save as many arms as possible.

  98. Playing devils advocate here, having to piece it together to get through this weekend might be beneficial going forward. Are the Beavs the only team that is having to deal games like this? Overused or tired arms?

    • If we’re gonna win it’s gonna be a messy bullpen and bats that do it. This is why we kept throwing sketchy arms all season, we would need them later

  99. I get on a plane in Hawaii, following the game on Twitter. We are up by 9 runs with 3 outs to go, it,s 21-12 and I go into airplane mode…

Landing in Oakland, I come out of airplane mode, we lose 25-22. Just catch the last part of game 2 on my Twitter feed driving home.
Unvelievable… What else can I say. We definitely need to rethink this tournament format.

  100. Here’s who’s likely available,

Multiple innings, max 40-50 total pitches.
    Sebby
    Hunter
    Quinn

One inning max due to usage on Sat.
    Verberg
    Carpenter
    Lattery
    Boisvert

Not sure who else made the trip but those guys would be available too.

Big key – They do not have to play to win here so that rules out Hjerpe, Pfennigs and others.

      • But did they make the trip? Announcers said the rosters were capped at 30 players. So 5 guys didn’t make the trip. I’m guessing they’d be all the injured players like Frisch, Mundt, etc.

        • Story was that the extra 3 (from 27 to 30) were all pitchers, it was noted that that was why McDowelll wasn’t a factor in the outfield lineup decisions because he wasn’t on the trip.
For sure the conference tourney needs to be re-evaluated, ACC model of max four games should be a starting point.

    • Degree of injury is probably suspect. Melton should heal up, Boyd was just tired AF, Meckler is tired and banged up but fine, Baz is good to go. Logan is the big one ans his injury might be bad. Haven’t seen a report yet but from where and how he was grabbing something in his crotch ain’t right.

Basically they played on concrete for like 10
Hours. Anyone who’s banged up should just rest. The game doesn’t matter and our pitchers are going to be batting practice. Play young guys and get them experience.

  101. Biggest accomplishment blowing a 9 run lead in the ninth and then losing or coming back to win the second game with a walk off?? I thought they’d lose the second game and once they gave up the lead I figured they had nothing left. Gotta love sports and all the chaos.

  102. Hated the conference tournament idea all season, and now I hate it even more. Only upside is bragging rights to winning the first Pac12 tournament if they actually win today.

    • 2
      1

Why is the tournament so terrible? I get the late games and all that stink. It’s been pretty exciting though. I’m guessing if you asked the players they’d say it’s been a blast. Isn’t this how kids grow up
Playing in tournaments all day every weekend? Pac-12 has been behind the times. There might be a year the Beavs need the conference tournament to get in.

      • They need to go to an 8-team single game elimination format. PAC not doing itself any favors by exhausting and injuring its own players for argumentatively a meaningless tournament for its top two teams. This tournament just proved what we’ve seen all season — Stanford is #1; OSU #2, a bunch of similar teams after (Arizona, UCLA, UO). Sure it was more exciting baseball, but I can’t say ANY team is better for it — if anything they are coming out worse. They need to decrease the number of games and aim to give at least a week off before the NCAA tournament to rest and heal.

          • If anything it puts the top two teams at risk of losing a seed, etc should they bow out of the tournament early — the risks outweigh the rewards.

        • But we were so excited when the basketball team won the conference tournament? I get that we feel
Differently because the baseball will get to the post season most years though. Also, I just don’t like the late night games. Single elimination sounds good. So that would
Eliminate a couple of games. These pitchers will be ready to go for the regional. I think Mitch Willa just his approach next year. There are teams holding out players in the conference tourney. He could have done the same.

How about Melton. Player of the year, will be drafted high. Getting it out and wins the game making it look easy.

          • Basketball was fun, single game elimination. Never been a fan of any of the tournaments, just another money grab for the conference and sponsors and again, does nothing for the top two or three teams but risk injury and lack of incentive to win it all playing more games to do so.

          • Yup, single-elimination, no climate issues. All teams participate. No chance of a game lasting five hours. I don’t see a need for a baseball tourney. I guess it gives a couple of teams one last hope, but that’s not much on the positive side.

    • Playing in AZ is terrible. 100+ degree heat and playing on concrete. No wonder there are injuries.

I’d be interested to see the attendance figures and compare them to Corvallis.

      • Where do you think some of these teams are going to be playing at next weekend? The weekend after? Omaha?

        Get used to it.

  103. So it appears the ladies will face Florida first in OKC

If ASU wins today the PAC-12 will be sending 4 teams to the WCWS. The Big 12 has 3 teams in.

  104. Tennessee 9 outs away from winning the sec tournament.

Making my first of two predictions look like ass.

  105. 2
    2

    I propose for next year’s conference tournament…..

4 days, all 11 teams, single elimination.

Top 5 teams get a bye. Teams 6-11 play on day 1.

Only day 2 would have 4 games.

    • Just scrap it and f thats the move. The only real use of the tournament, unless you get a birth from it , is preparation for the tournament. Single elimination wouldn’t prep them for anything, just more pointless games.

  106. I do think the tournament (particularly the double-elimination format) helps teams mentally prepare for the NCAAs, particularly those games that are nuts, when you’re depending on your sixth or seventh best pitcher to avoid elimination or pitch you into the final. Find those guys a bit down the bench that can deliver in the clutch – and figure out who you can’t count on.

  107. 7
    1

My conspiratorial gut thinks the conference tourney was a bit of a show from the new conference leadership, with a couple of obvious (to me) changes to attempt to boost interest and eye balls towards PAC12 baseball leading up to the real postseason.

    I wonder if :
1)the balls were juiced a bit,
2)if the umps were instructed to squeeze the plate,
3)playing field chosen was a vast expanse with huge space in the outfield, quite different than all conference parks
    4) playing surface was like a concrete infield which speeds up all grounders

The result was the games became 5 hour marathons with a lot of offense, a lot of arms used by every team to get through it, multiple games with one team scoring over 10 runs, In addition, apparently no one at the PAC12 offices live in Arizona in May-September with any experience in that kind of heat.

PAC12 has done a great disservice to all teams participating in this tourney, and likely have cost both Stanford/OSU any real chance to make a great run into Omaha. I think the teams have been placed into unnecessary situations without any real benefit to either team, given they likely were both top 5 seeds from the start. For UCLA, Cal, UW they have all played 3-5 extra games that may not change their situation either and will now go into regionals with bullpens full of worn out arms before the regionals even begin. UCLA may mash their way through at least.

OSU has no reason to even play today if the locations and seedings will be announced before 1st pitch. Pac12 commish needs to dump the idea of a conference tourney and preserve the health and maximize the opportunity for conference teams heading into postseason. Any comparisons to basketball fall short since the toll is on pitching more so than field positions players, but the heat takes a toll on those guys as well. Basketball doesn’t play in 102* heat mid-day for 6 hours 4 days in a row, or last until 2am into night either.

PAC has to hit the drawing board and reconsider the wisdom of this whole concept, late night games are a joke, no fans is a joke, the heat and conditions are a joke, and the supposed revenue stream from such a thing is probably non-existent. I don’t see a real advantage to it, less as each day goes by and the capper is the championship game isn’t even meaningful…except to the individual teams but no influence on seeding for overall tourney.

    • For UCLA, Cal, UW they have all played 3-5 extra games that may not change their situation

There is no situation for Cal and UW as their season is over. Neither team had anything to lose and winning the tournament was their only shot of qualifying for a regional.

For ucla nothing changes as they did not use Max Rajcic in the tournament. Unless he’s injured and that’s why he did not pitch. UCLA will have a week off before a regional.

For OSU and Stanford the best hope is that a regional doesn’t start until Saturday giving them almost a week.

Hjerpe will have at least a week off before starting the regional. He hasn’t pitched since Thursday.

This is it going forward. Regionals and if they get there, Omaha will be the same model.

Most other teams outside of the PAC-12 have been dealing with the same thing.

  108. I even thought the managers of the teams that are already in the playoffs were very casual and even blase in the countless P-12 Network in-game interviews. Nothing at stake, no stress.

    • Perfect example…When the cumulative ucla infield dropped that blooper Saturday night the next tv shot was their skipper laughing and shrugging his shoulders.

  109. Looks like Beavs will be home team tonight, per the layout on the Nolan RPI site.

EDIT/ADD: Nolan led me astray, Beavs visitors…….not ideal

    There’s your 16 regional hosts

    • Why not, I guess? a senior with little to no pro prospects after this year. He can throw his arm out. I hope he called for the ball, gives a little more motivation and leadership to the team.

      • Whoa, I doubt he is gonna be left in to throw his arm out. Pretty sure he called for the ball, listening to pre-game radio.

  111. I have the DVR set for 4.5 hours plus the next program until 12:30. I’ll watch it tomorrow in a couple of hours. Can’t stand live baseball on tv. Endless; walks to the mound, pitching changes, reviewed calls, ten pitch at bats, minor injuries etc. Adios.

  112. Carpenter looks to be 1st relief spot. Kids are really enamored with him. How tall are you? You throw gas? Lol. 6’8″ was the answer and “yes” to the gas.

  113. Three rough at-bats by the heart of the Beav order. A weird triple by Stanford. Verburg not fooling anyone. 1-0 Furd already.

  114. Hopefully the Beavers won’t need to go to Verburg in a big moment in the regionals cause he’s a complete disaster. If they got Hunter warmed up in the first, not sure why they just didn’t start him. Mitch and DJ are probably the 2 worst arms in the pen right now

  115. Looks as rough in person as it does on TV I’m sure. If the tree puts a few more on here early, I’d pull the starters

  116. I’ve just spent 10 minutes trying to explain to my 15-year-old son why the Beavers are playing in this tournament when the regular season is already over and they have a regional position sown up. I’ve given up.

  117. Dorman’s pitching moves all tournament long have been hard to understand. Mitch has struggled almost all season and has been getting smacked around in Arizona and Hunter has the better pitcher for the last 2 months. Makes no sense to go Verburg to start the game off when Hunter could go 3 innings or so at least and set you up better with your pen as the game goes. Winning or losing isn’t a big deal in this one but it’s just another move that really makes zero sense

  118. That was big to get out of that inning. Playing with house money. Good to see some guys performing well under pressure.

  119. Mitch is definitely relaxed and comes off well in these interviews. I don’t think he cares whether they win or lose this one. What was needed has already been accomplished.

  120. Beavs hitters looking pretty tired. Stanford pitcher rolling but more of an issue of the Beavs looking spent than him being dominant. He only has the fastball going and thrown a bunch of hangers but they ain’t locked in. Not a surprise. Good to see Jaren Hunter throwing well. He’s getting a lot of swings and misses. He’s gonna be a big piece next week

  121. Smith throws a guy out at 2nd, Hunter throws strikes…….good experiences that will pay off.
Now, isn’t 3 innings and 54 pitches enough from Hunter for today?

  122. The pitch clock is causing way too many problems. Guys just aren’t used to it.

BUT if this something that is enforced in the tourney, best get used to it now.

  123. Home plate ump is terrible. Fuchs has more watched 3rd strikes than any player ever. Why not Trosky or Casper or anyone else.

  124. Fuchs currently at .235 for the season. I get he’s a senior but we really can’t bring in a DH that can do better than that? This bottom half of the lineup is atrocious.

  125. Beavs still in this even with all of the freebies given to Stanford. E and HBP ended up scoring….seeing this trend the last couple of weeks — errors and HBP way up, not good.

  126. AJ scuffles through the b6, still Beavs down only 1 run. Expect AJ to get another inning.
    Meckler, Forrester, Melton due up.

  127. There have been some crappy at-bats in key situations. Furd is trying to give the Beavs an opening and they aren’t taking it.

    • I think he’s trying too hard to create something that isn’t there. He is/was the hottest batter in the lineup, and he knows it too.

  128. Ever since Bazzana got benched for a couple games while slumping, he’s probably had the best at-bats on the team. Took a horrendous call from the home plate umpire for him to not get his 3rd walk tonight. Hopefully this is the last game this season where Fuchs is in the lineup. Can’t be many options worse than him

  129. Nice walk by Fuchs. Why anyone wouldn’t lob balls up there to a guy hitting in the low 2″s is probably giving the pitching coach heartburn. Tie game.

OT: No football bowl for the Beavs, that’s the prediction from College Football News. Good sign?……under the radar?

    • Eh, we can hope. Honestly, if the March/April Beavs show up then they’ll advance and could make the final 8. If the May Beavs show up, I don’t think they make it to round 2. We’ll see what the draw is but if true what was posted above, UCONN and Zags definitely have more than enough ability to bounce them out even when playing top ball.

Hats off to Beav baseball. Gave Stanford a solid battle. Lots of fight in em after creating a lot of drama for themselves. Need to clean up ALOT of things before the tournament.

This week is hopefully a good lesson for the Beavs that they cannot afford to find themselves playing out of the losers bracket. Not enough arms

Well that’s probably ballgame right there. They’ve kept it closer than I thought they would considering the pitching situation. Stanford is good. That’s gonna be a tough team to beat in the post season for anyone.

Regroup, rest up, heal and get ready for the regional.

  134. Tough loss. Team battled but was running out of gas after yesterday. Sebby wasn’t sharp with the breaking ball and Stanford isn’t missing on mistakes right now. Hopefully Logan is ready to go by Friday. Recharge for next weekend and get an Omaha run started

Good work by the Beavs to get to the final. Maybe I’m overly pessimistic but I’m not sure they make it out of first round playing like they have the last month. Too many errors and defensive lapses. They need more than 3 consistent relievers. They need the bottom half of the lineup to do something. They don’t need to be Allstars but dam, we’ve got 4 every day players well below. 250. That’s crazy and not sustainable for making a run in a tournament. I’m actually a little worried about Melton. Has a Kwan feel to it where the hammy wasn’t a big deal but then he played like 1 game in Omaha. Melton has DHd the last 4 games. A side issue from that, meckler not looking comfortable in right field so you’ve got people playing out of position. Hope they can recover and make some moves.

A couple of the regional teams coming to Corvallis won’t anywhere as good as the upper half of the Pac-12. I think they’ll be fine in the regional. They certainly are capable of getting to Omaha. But this team isn’t going to win it all.

  136. I posted something erroneous earlier.

ALL regionals will start on Friday. Super regionals are split. 4 start on Friday and 4 on Saturday.

    • Of the teams we kept seeing connected to the OSU(Airforce, GCU, Gonzaga) all 3 have already landed in other regionals.

  137. Regional Opponents – Just the numbers

New Mexico State (24-32, 10-20) – 231 in RPI, #197 in Boyds world ISR, #190 in warrennolan elo ratings, won their conference tourney to get in,
San Diego (36-18, 17-10) – #48 in RPI, #28 in ISR, #41 in elo ratings, won their conference tourney
Vanderbilt (36-21, 14-16) – #6 in RPI, #16 in ISR, #22 in elo ratings, #8 seed in SEC tourney went 1-2,

None are ranked in the Top 25 polls.

    Hot take,
I think the Beavs got a fair shake here. Got a cupcake in NMSU. Did not get Gonzaga or UC Santa Barbara which would be tougher matchups than San Diego. Vandy is a fair #2. Up and down year but only 10-17 vs Q1 opponents and they have to make the long trip to Corvallis.

    • About as good as could be expected. Did not think they’d get the #3 overall. And the cupcake NMSU 1st game is a bonus.
Beavs reputation helped them this year(that and having the conference tournament last night after these selections were probably already set helped keep the Beavs and Stanford close in the overall seeding.

  138. Can the backup catcher dh instead of Fuchs for a game or two just to see if we can get some production there? Assuming Logan is back starting. Anyone heard what’s going on with Wheeler?

  139. I watched quite a bit of baseball over the last 5 days and have to say I’m not a big fan of the PAC 12 tournament as it did absolutely nothing to change the regular season final standings – but may have exhausted some of the teams for the regionals this week; maybe even hurting the Beavs chances of getting to Omaha. First off, the scheduling by the PAC 12 was terrible – should be 2 games each day: one in the morning, one in the evening – no team should be expected to play 11 hours of baseball or well into the early hours of the am. Arizona is hot this time of year, no question, and coming from Oregon and Washington, you could tell the kids were affected by it. How many pitchers were used by the Beavs on Saturday; heat was a factor for sure? Maybe have it in Vegas or Norcal?

Again, maybe I’m splitting hairs and just another old guy complaining, but we’ll see what the last few days of baseball have done to the Beavs chances of getting out of their own regional.
