  1. The first game makes you think, do they over think things and start Hjerpe in the second game? Outside of Hjerpe and Kmatz, the pitching staff confidence is not high.

NMSU ran through their conf tourney so they are on a hot streak but they were 20-32 before the tourney started.

    • No, just keep the rotation. Our Friday/sat/sun starter are better than everyone else’s. If we drop one they still have to deal with Hunter and the bullpen.

I’d say save Hjerpe for Vandy match up in game 2, go with Pfennings on Friday and have Hunter at the ready for long relief if Pfennings gets into trouble, save Kmatz for the Sunday game, Verbug probably goes on Sunday game 2 if they need it.

Sebby, Ferrer are the only reliable arms in the bullpen, including Brown at this point. So really Hjerpe, Kmatz, Hunter, Ferrer, Sebby are the guys who will determine if the Beavs go far. Which also means staying in the winners bracket and keeping innings minimized for the bullpen.

Hopefully Boyd, Meckler, Logan and Melton recover from the concrete field and feel much better back at Goss by gametime next weekend. Go Beavs!

If WHeeler can DH it may be a huge upgrade, Bazanna is starting to hit again, Dernedde is a tough out, and I like the Beavs chances to get into the Super Regional.

Just get to the Super Regional first, but it looks like a great chance to get back to Omaha based on the bracket for OSU.

  3. This regional is all about the Beavs, if they just play to their season long norm even Mark Buchanan or Greg Street won’t be able to keep them from advancing!

A return to Goss should lead to a return to elite fielding, that and the usual bats (Forrester, Boyd, Melton, Meckler, Bazzana, Logan) can overcome pitching worries. These guys are in a good frame of mind, let’s see who has a breakout series……Dukart, Dernnede, Trosky, dare I add Fuchs?
On the mound it’s anyone’s guess as to who may provide a pleasant surprise, but it’s not gonna take much more than the season’s average pitching to advance.

Vandy looks to be going on their past reputation, may not be the most serious threat, they are 20-21 vs top 100 teams (Beavs 33-13) and lost their last two games by a total of 17 runs. In May Vandy is 7-8, Beavs 11-6. Still, probably best to save Hjerpe for them.

Is Vandy the group that pulled hotel fire alarms in Omaha?

After spending the weekend in Scottsdale, I’d be shocked if Stanford doesn’t make a run at the title this year. They are clearly the best team in the PAC and their pitching staff is the real deal.

So the Corvallis Regional is paired with the Auburn regional, which features UCLA as the second seed there. Hmmm.

  6. The USFL is still in business, on the cusp of being the longest lasting Spring league since the old XFL. And Riley clinched a spot in the playoffs with the NJ Generals. Didn’t realize Locey and James Rodgers are on that staff as well.

  7. Looks like SEC has 9 of their 14 teams (64+%)in the tournament(and people thought South Carolina got snubbed, coulda been 10)
Pac 12 has 4 out of 11 teams in (36+%)
And of those 4 teams, 1 is guaranteed to be eliminated by the super regional bracket of UCLA/OSU.

    • 5 teams made it.

More pac12 teams could have made it if they took care of business in non conf. Plus a lot less cupcakes on the west coast for mid week games.

      • …a lot less cupcakes on the west coast for mid week games.
The guys at D1 are amazed at the weight given out of conference strength of schedule this year, poor poor SEC with no choice but to play cupcakes mid week! LOL

    • SEC already talking lots of shit on their forums lol. Vandy fans are saying Beavs are just bloated by a powder puff conference.

Only team TN could meet before the final would be Oregon in early round CWS. It would be hilarious if Oregon beat TN and then got demolished by one of the P12 teams in the final

      • Not all Vandy fans are putting down the Beavs baseball ability, this from their site on SBNATION:
They’re the toughest team on the West Coast. Also, ever been to Corvallis? No. You would have literally no reason to go there. I would like to avoid them (please and thank you).
In a discussion of game times on the site it becomes obvious that they don’t even know what the time zone is in Corvallis.

A writer for The Tennessean probably likes Corvallis though, says, “One of Vanderbilt’s biggest problems this year has been allowing home runs. Home runs are more likely when the weather is hot and dry, meaning the Commodores may want to hope for a destination in colder or more humid environment like the Midwest or on the West Coast …

        • Ole Miss should not have gotten in. No argument from me there. NC State got screwed imo and deserved to be in.

Rutgers crying after only playing 4 games against top 50 RPI teams all season is a joke. You play in the Big 10. Non conference SOS of 264!!!! Schedule better in OOC games. They should know this already. If the Beavs played that cupcake schedule they’d probably only have 5 or 6 losses. At most.

Hell, Maryland getting a national seed imo is a joke. They only played 6 games against top 50 opponents all year. I do understand their argument though. How does Maryland get a national seed and they finished right behind them and get left out?

It doesn’t really make any sense. But when have NCAA committee decisions ever made sense?

Their change.org petition will change nothing. Which is why I said it was cute.

          https://d1baseball.com/team/rutgers/

          • I was wrong about Maryland. They were not awarded a national seed. Turns out the committee didn’t put much stock in their inflated record either and seeded them 15th

  8. NMSU by the numbers…………overall record 24-32, finished 10-20 in the WAC. Had an 8 game losing streak before winning 6 of their last 7 games.

Common opponents and their record against (but as we all know the transitive property doesn’t mean shit)

    Seattle U 3-3
    Grand Canyon 1-5
New Mexico 0-4 (and lost one of those games 19-2!)
    Arizona 0-2

Record of 6-14 on the road, RPI of 230. 22 of their 24 wins came against RPI teams over 100

They have five players batting over .300

    Their top 2 starters are…..

Ian Mejia – 15 starts, 6-4 record, ERA of 4.24 and opponents are batting .284 against him. This will likely be who the Beavs face on Friday night
Pablo Cortes – 12 starts, 4-4 record, ERA of 6.61, opponents are batting .318 against him.

Their lowest ERA is Rorik Maltrud with 4.11. He’s only appeared in 6 games and 5 of those were starts. Record of 1-2.

As a team they only have 2 pitchers with an ERA under 5.

The bottom line is they’ve played a lot of crappy teams and still have a losing record. Their 4 wins in the WAC tournament to win it were against Sam Houston, UT Rio Grand Valley, Sacramento St and Abilene Christian. Not exactly murderers row. The two best teams they faced the entire season were Grand Canyon and Arizona. They went a combined 1-7 against them.

NMSU can certainly hit. As a team they average .299 which is identical to the Beavs. Logan Gallina averages .333 and a whopping 21 HR’s. No one else on their team has hit more than 7.

The Beavs bats should feast on NMSU pitching. Their team ERA is 6.69. 2-1/2 runs worse than the Beavs team ERA.

Las Cruces sits at an elevation of around 3900′. Corvallis isn’t Las Cruces. Beavs play their game they should be just fine even if they decide to start Pfennings or Kmatz. Rain is in the forecast for this weekend so the ball won’t be flying out of Goss more than likely.

And for all of you crying that the conference tournament was a joke and should not be played?

If the Beavs had battled massive injuries most of the season and were around .500, but got healthy and hot at the end and won it?

You’d be rejoicing. Conference tournaments are designed to give most, but not all, a last chance. And there’s nothing wrong with that.

    • I don’t like it unless they change to playing games on multiple fields so teams aren’t playing after midnight. Also, would suggest rotating venues… Seattle, Portland, SF, LA, Phx. Would also go to single elimination which would probably eliminate need to having multiple fields.

      • Scott Barnes came on the air with Parker during the radio broadcast last night and brought up discussions that will take place after the season to improve the tournament. The late games being one of the issues and he even suggested having two venues.

Look, no one gets it right the first time. Yes there are things that can be done to improve the conference tournament. And I think some changes are certainly going to be in store.

Even the big west is clamoring to start up a conference tournament after only getting one team in.

Reality is that it’s here to stay for the PAC-12. I personally enjoyed it and there were some exciting games that had a playoff atmosphere. I’m even considering attending a future tournament in person.

    • Likewise, a conference tourney can really screw a conference if there are two bubble teams that go 0-2 and miss out on the tournament. Or, a great team could suffer a lot of injuries in the tournament and go 0-2 in the real tournament. Or, a good team on the cusp of hosting a super regional doesn’t make the tourney final.

We can play scenarios all we want, but there are more disadvantages than advantages. The conference should not be giving up any advantage when we know that the committee is heavily biased (wrongly) into putting more overrated SEC and ACC teams in the tournament.

I’m down for moving the tourney from Scottsdale to San Diego, making it single elimination, and giving the top three teams byes. Also, make sure the umpires are actually good.

  10. Beavs should handle NMSU. I’d start Hunter or phennings. Save Cooper for next game. I think USD will beat Vandy and will be a tough out. Overall, I like our chance and pray that Auburn can beat UCLA. If so, I think we’re headed to Omaha

    • I think UCLA is going to win that regional. A good hitting team like that in the hot and humid south?

UCLA will probably just bash their way

From Aaron Fitt regarding NCState Snub. More evidence that the committee isn’t even looking at the final day or two of the tournaments, and wait for it…..there’s bias on the committee….color me shocked!! AND, While we are at it, ANY TEAM WITH A LOSING RECORD SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO TAKE HOME AN AT-LARGE BID, PERIOD. I think there are four teams with losing records this year, PATHETIC! Of course if you must, send ALL of them to the Corvallis regional…. Thank you.

“There are always a few things you can nitpick with any NCAA tournament field of 64. We never agree completely with the Division I Baseball Committee, but in recent years the committee has done a generally solid job, without any exceptionally egregious blunders.

But every once in a while, the committee makes a decision that stops us in our tracks and knocks us off our feet.
NC State’s omission from the field of 64 is one of the most unexpected snubs I can remember in 18 years covering college baseball. Sure, the Wolfpack entered the week on the bubble after getting swept by Wake Forest in the final weekend of the regular season to finish 14-15 in the ACC regular season, but we figured a 1-1 showing in the conference tournament would still give them a solid shot to get in. Instead, they went 3-1, beating No. 6 RPI Wake Forest and regional host Miami in pool play before taking down Pitt in the semifinals, then falling to red-hot North Carolina in the title game.
A team with a winning aggregate record in ACC play (17-16) and a No. 33 RPI should be a no-brainer at-large team, if precedent matters. In recent years, teams with that profile always get bids, because the ACC is a premier conference, and handling that meat-grinder with an acceptable RPI has been enough. The Wolfpack wasn’t even close to our bubble discussion this weekend; we had it projected as a No. 2 seed, higher on the pecking order than at least 10 at-large teams that were also included in our field.

You can poke holes in NC State’s case and the committee surely punished it for a No. 189 nonconference strength of schedule, and for winning just four of its 10 conference series, including just one against a regional team. And those would be valid reasons to keep NC State out if it were on the bubble. But none of that should torpedo a top-35 RPI team that finished with a winning record against conference opponents in a league that ended in a virtual tie with the SEC for the No. 1 conference RPI.
At this point, it’s obvious that the ACC suffers from not having any representation on the committee, whereas the SEC (Mississippi State’s John Cohen), Big 12 (Texas Tech’s Kirby Hocutt) and Pac-12 (Washington’s Jen Cohen) all have a seat at the table.
“It’s what happens when you don’t have representation from your league on the committee,” said an outraged Florida State coach Mike Martin Jr at the start of his press conference Monday. “The ones that do have representation seem to get taken care of. … I feel so bad for [NC State coach] Elliott [Avent] and his tremendous ballclub that he has. There’s no way they shouldn’t be in.”
Two years in a row, this committee has done the ACC wrong, notably by denying Notre Dame a top-eight national seed despite winning the conference by a whopping 4.5 games last year, then denying the Irish a host spot after going 18-12 aggregate in the league with a No. 12 RPI this spring.

Again, the committee will point to Notre Dame’s No. 195 nonconference SOS, but that ignores the realities of scheduling as a Northern team, especially at an academically prestigious university with uncommon restrictions about missed class time factors that Division I Baseball Committee chairman Mike Buddie (AD at Army) acknowledged in a conference call with D1Baseball reporters. Weather forces Notre Dame to start the season with five straight weekends on the road, and then weather is always an issue when it finally starts to play home games in late March. Despite all of that, Notre Dame went 18-12 in the ACC, a league dominated by warm-weather powers, and finished 12th in the RPI. If the ACC got the respect it deserves from the committee, those two data points on their own would make Notre Dame an easy host.
Nonconference scheduling is tricky; it’s hard to predict just how good or just how bad an opponent from another league will turn out to be. NC State probably assumed scheduling a three-game weekend series against CAA power Northeastern would be great for its RPI, but the Huskies had a disappointing year, finishing just 31-29-1, and their early-March sweep of the Wolfpack wound up hurting NC State a lot but likely not as much NC State’s weekend sweeps of 15-33 Quinnipiac and 15-33 Radford. On the flip side, NC State won two midweek games against top-eight national seed East Carolina, an early weekend series win against a good Evansville team that finished second in the MVC (ahead of at-large team Dallas Baptist), and two quality midweek games against regional team UNC Greensboro.
It’s not a standout body of nonconference work, but it should have been adequate when paired with NC State’s RPI and 17-16 mark against ACC teams. History suggests a team with that profile is a lock. After NC State’s devastating COVID-induced “no contest” elimination from Omaha last year after winning its first two games, the Wolfpack had to replace seven of their nine position players starters, and then lost their preseason All-America ace to injury early this season, but still they found a way to grind into at-large position. They looked poised to cruise into regionals, where perhaps college baseball’s most famous current player the sensation known as Tommy Tanks would have been a marquee attraction.
All of which explains why NC State’s omission was so much more stunning than any of the other snubs and in light of last year’s unprecedented conclusion, it was that much more devastating. All of the upsets in conference tournaments this year left the bubble tighter than I can remember, and we had for more teams with worthy at-large cases than we had spots for. Today I feel for Rutgers, UTSA, Wofford and Old Dominion all of whom were right on the edge during our final debate last night. All of those teams had stellar seasons and constructed resums that would have made them all no-brainers in a normal year, with a more normal bubble size. You could make cases for all of those teams to get in ahead of some of the last four in, like Dallas Baptist and Grand Canyon and Ole Miss, but you can also make cases in the other direction. Pick any collection of those teams you like, and they’re all defensible.
But NC State seemed in a separate group entirely above this tier, which is why its omission was so gut-wrenching. Nobody saw it coming.
“We truly try to set the best 33 at-larges, and it was brutally painful, I’m not going to kid you,” Buddie said. “Not just NC State, but Rutgers and Wofford and Old Dominion and San Antonio, they were all still on the board for those last precious spots, and we made sure that we had a conversation. We took a break, had a meal and had another conversation. We kept coming back to it. We probably did discuss NC State any more than anybody else in those last four out, because it was, it was very painful. But we tried to compare ‘like’ team sheets, so Wofford and Old Dominion and Liberty and Grand Canyon are a little bit more easy to compare to each other, as well as Ole Miss, Florida State and NC State, a little bit more similar resums. … We revisited the NC State resum several, several times, including early this morning.”
And it’s particularly hard to construct a case for Ole Miss over NC State, considering the Wolfpack finished five spots ahead in the RPI (Ole Miss is No. 38), had a better record in a comparable conference (Ole Miss went 15-17 aggregate in the SEC, counting a midweek nonconference win against Mississippi State), and finished better in its conference tournament (Ole Miss went 0-1 in Hoover).
Likewise, I have a hard time justifying Dallas Baptist over Wofford, considering the Terriers won a road series at DBU, then ran away with the SoCon regular-season title and reached the conference tournament title game before getting tripped up by UNCG. The Patriots did some great things in nonconference play, as we have documented, and that’s what got them into the field, along with a No. 23 RPI. But usually performance in conference play outweighs nonconference metrics, and DBU was disappointing in MVC play, finishing 11-9-1 in the regular season, going 1-2 in the conference tourney, and winning just three of its seven MVC series. The Patriots finished in third place in the Valley, 4.5 games out of first place, in the No. 9 RPI conference but still got a bid at the expense of a Wofford team that won its regular-season title by 4.5 games, won a head-to-head series against DBU on the road, and had a perfectly respectable RPI. In sum, DBU had a real case thanks to its nonconference body of work, but it didn’t have a better case than Wofford.
This is not an exact science, and there will always be people who object to any field. I thought this particular field was more flawed than most, and I couldn’t help but notice that leagues without representation on the committee seemed underseeded. In addition to the NC State and Notre Dame cases noted above, it was also a bit of a surprise to see Florida State on the list of “last four teams in” the field, as we didn’t regard the Seminoles as a bubble team either.
Then there’s the Big Ten. Maryland deserved a top-eight national seed after going 45-12, winning the regular-season title and finishing No. 9 in the RPI no small feat for a Big Ten team. This committee seeded the Terps way down at No. 15, a sign that this group simply did not hold the Big Ten in high regard. The omission of Rutgers is another sign of that; the Scarlet Knights played a light nonconference schedule and lost series against the best teams in the B1G, but they still went 44-15 overall, 17-7 in their league, reached the B1G title game, and ended at No. 42 in the RPI. Big Ten teams with that kind of profile just about always get bids; but Rutgers was denied. The Big Ten, like the ACC, did not have a representative on the committee. That stuff isn’t supposed to matter, but it does. We see it every year.
I also take issue with the committee’s stubbornness with regards to making up its mind about regional hosts before all the conference title games have been played. Oklahoma should have been a host after taking down Texas in Sunday’s title game, boosting the Sooners into the top 20 of the RPI and giving them the Big 12’s best overall record, as well as serious sustained momentum down the stretch. The only reason to deny OU a host is because you made up your mind before that final game, when the Sooners were stuck in the mid-20s in the RPI.
Ultimately, the process is imperfect, and the end result will never be perfect because such a thing is not possible perfection is in the eye of the beholder. But I can only speak for myself, as one beholder, and I was disappointed with this committee’s work.”

    • “All of the upsets in conference tournaments this year left the bubble tighter than I can remember, and we had far more teams with worthy at-large cases than we had spots for”

I have no dog in that fight, but…..Be that as it may? NC State’s exclusion is inexcusable. They deserved to be in over the likes of Grand Canyon and Ole Miss. But allegedly the committee put more weight on non conference RPI and SOS THIS year?

If so, then there’s no reason a couple of SEC bubble teams got in. Some of their mid week opponents were an absolute joke. And their merit stood alone on the fact that they play in the SEC. Which is ridiculous in itself and contradicts what the committee said. Unless I am mistaken.

I’m fine with the omission of Iowa and Rutgers. As long as Maryland isn’t a top 8 national seed. But since they are it just further boggles the mind. I get they can’t get it 100% right every year. And there will always be a few if’s, and’s or buts. But I can point out a few admissions and the same number of exclusions that just don’t make any sense whatsoever.

I don’t have a solution for the bias. Or anything. Maybe add another 16 teams to the tournament and make them a 5 team regional and the 1 seed gets a first round bye. But that only creates more bias and slants regionals towards the 16 teams that are hosting as a 1 seed.

The human element will always be biased. If only someone could come up with a computer model that was unbiased. I’m betting someone can.

      I got nuffin.

    • The ACC is so overrated. I could care less about NC State. Every year ACC gets more than their fair share of bids and hosts yet almost never win NC. The biggest snub ever was the 2016 Beavs… a team that was extremely young and talented… shut out UCLA over 3 games to close out the year. I don’t remember Fitt raising a fuss about that other than a small footnote that Beavs should have been selected.

      • I don’t remember, did Fitt make a similar impassioned speech in defense of the Beavs when Meggs made sure we were sitting home? Let’s remember OSU were 35-19, 16-14 Pac-12.

And more from an article concerning the circumstances:
“Among the issues that vexed Casey: that Arizona State got into the tournament as a No. 2 seed, and that Washington was selected over OSU.

The Sun Devils had a 43 RPI, one spot above OSU, and were swept by the Beavers in March. The two teams tied with the same conference record of 16-14, while Oregon State had 35 wins to ASU’s 34.

“I’m not suggesting they should be in or out,” Casey said. “I’m just suggesting if they’re in, how are we not in?”

He questioned Washington’s place in the field over his team given that the Huskies were 55th in RPI and lost two of three games to the Beavers in April.”

Now let’s compare Apples to apples with NC State and see what’s “fair,” and what is “one of the most unexpected snubs I can remember in 18 years covering college baseball.”

I believe the conference tourney is here to stay and it’s probably good for the long term.

But tweaks will be need to be made.

Here’s the proposal I thought of. Taking the ACC model and the NBA play in game model and blending them together

    8 teams make the tourney.
First round is double elimination for the top 4 seeds, single elimination for the bottom 4 seeds.
    – Teams are matched up 1v8 7v2 6v3 5v4.
    – If the bottom 4 seed wins the first game, they play a winner take all second game. If the top four seed wins either game, the lower seed is eliminated.
Semi finals are single elimination – 1v8 winner vs 4v5 winner and 2v7 winner vs 6v3 winner
    Final is single elimination

In this proposal the max number of games is 4. A top four seed would only need three games to take the title if they win their first game. A bottom four seed would need to win 4 in a row to take the title.

Here what I think the benefits would be,
A top four seed would get essentially a bye for making it single elimination for the bottom four seed.
Regular season play has more weight because teams can earn a “bye” by finishing in the top 4.
Max number of games per team is 4. Total max tournament games is 11. Current model maxes out at 15 and a team could play up to 6 games. UCLA would have if they made the title game.
Pitching staffs could survive 4 games, no matter if one of the games was 25-22.
A bottom 4 seed that advances to the semis would get an RPI boost because they would have to win 2 against a better team and have a winning record for the week no matter where they lose after.
Could do a reseed for the semis so the lowest seed left really had to earn it. Another benefit for both teams. Regular season reward for the higher seed and RPI boost for the lower seed if they beat the higher seed.
One less day spent on hotel costs for all teams.

Disadvantage is only for the bottom 4 seeds. There’s no room for error if a team is a bottom 4 seed and is on the bubble. They’d also only get one game if they lose the first. The ACC model guarantees 2 games.

The schedule would go like this, Top 2 seeds would get a day off if they advance and there would be games every day.
First day – Top 2 seeds play their games and if necessary games
Second Day – 3/4 seeds play their games
    Third Day -Semis
    Fourth Day – Finals

    What do you think? Suggestions?

    • 8
      1

I don’t like the double eliminate format under any circumstances, to much stress on pitchers arms heading into the real tournament. If anything, invite all 11 and give the top 5 byes. Similar advantage as your suggestion for the top having to win 1 game vs bottom needing to win 2 games to get to the semi final. Losing 2 game has the potential to negatively impact RPI and seeding more than a single lose.

  13. JUCO DT Taylor Lewis committed to Arkansas today.
He’s the “man of my word” guy who visited OSU recently, but we figured would go elsewhere and he was just visiting because he didnt to go back on his word…..so we basically wasted an official visit

  14. According to Boyd’s World ISR San Diego should have slotted as a 2 seed and Vanderbilt should have hosted

Stanford has the hardest regional with ISR #9 ISR UCSB and ISR #12 Texas State both in their regional

Texas has the easiest regional with ISR #40 La Tech as the 2 seed and ISR #44 Dallas Baptist as the 3 seed

East Carolina, Maryland and Georgia Southern should be underdogs in their own regionals. Auburn and Louisville toss ups.

    • Honestly San Diego is the only team that scares me in this regional. I think they’ll handle Vandy.

I’d save Hjerpe for the Saturday game. Kmatz or Pfennings can beat NM State.

      • Yep USD is legit. Lots of capable arms and hitting. The committee wants P12 to earn a trip to Omaha. Arizona and Ducks have better draws than Beavs and Tree… and if UCLA and Beavs survive, only one can go to Omaha. I’m actually very concerned the Ducks will get to Omaha… I think they have the easiest road

      • From D1 podcast (no paywall) on pitching rotation:
“If you can’t beat NMSU with your #2 pitcher you probably aren’t getting out of your regional (anyway)”

        • Only reason Hjerpe should pitch game 1 is if weather delays the start of the regional and we end up playing a day late. Then i could see using him to give him ample rest time before the next round, should we make it.

  15. 1
    1

I’m way more worried about the potential SR matchup than this regional. I’ll be surprised if we do anything but roll through this first weekend…but the potential rematch with UCLA…they seem to have our number a bit and both teams look like CWS material. A shame we are bracketed up with them like that.

    • …surprised if we do anything but roll through this first weekend…
C’mon GWH, you’ve been a Beav too long to make that kind of assumption!
Sheesh, family goes to nike and then this…….hard to believe.

      • Have to wonder what turleys dollar figure is. If he think he’s a first rounder, does he come to college? If he goes lower?

Could be quite an outfield next year if Reed is healthy.

    • Sounds like that is his thinking. Per Carter Bahns:

“Beavers head coach Mitch Canham said today that he will likely return to his normal weekend rotation of Hjerpe, Kmatz, Pfennigs.”

        • I dunno, I can see both sides of the coin. If he has that much confidence in Kmatz, you win the first two and the other team has to beat you twice in games 4 and 5 and you just have to win one of game3/4

          • That’s why I posted the numbers about batting average.

I’m sure the coaching staff is looking at all of the numbers from each possible opponent and making the best decisions they feel will work out.

It’s possible NM State is the best offensive team of the 3. Their issue is that their pitching staff is mostly trash.

Of course since I say that they’ll probably win Friday night.

You gotta get to the Saturday night game first.

            Idk. I’m on the fence.

          • Reasonable argument.

Again, all things I’m sure this coaching staff is weighing.

We won’t know for sure until the lineup card is submitted.

I think Pfennings and Kmatz both pitching last Saturday may be what the coaching staff is weighing most. Hjerpe hasn’t pitched since last Thursday. Could explain why.

          • Would pitching Cooper game 1 make him a possible closer in game 5 if necessary? That might be one angle to consider.

          • Is game 5 on Monday? I think he would be good for an inning or two, usually that is when you have your bullpen session anyway.

      • Looking at the numbers…..

        Batting average for each team

        Beavs .299
        NMSU .299
        San Diego .290
        Vanderbilt.283

I know that isn’t the be all, end all.

But Corvallis isn’t Las Cruces, San Diego or Nashville. Weather is looking pretty crappy for this weekend. Ball isn’t going to be flying out of Goss.

        • But Corvallis isn’t Las Cruces, San Diego or Nashville…
HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE……….although Friday will be the least affected, and the least advantage needed.

          • I meant mainly due to weather and/or elevation. Those teams may bash at home. That isn’t going to happen here. I don’t see the long ball being much of a factor this weekend.

If the Beavs pitch and play defense? They’ll be fine. We shall see

  16. OT: i didn’t realize the PAC changed the process for determining PAC Football Championship game participants.

    https://pac-12.com/article/2022/05/18/pac-12-announces-change-football-championship-game-format?amp

“The Pac-12 could take additional strategic steps in the coming months, potentially eliminating the divisions altogether and reconstructing the conference schedule model — all with an eye on increasing opportunities to reach the playoff and winning national championships.”

    https://www.denverpost.com/2022/05/18/pac-12-adjusts-football-champ-game-selection-process-its-all-about-playoff-bids/amp/

    • The dumb thing about that statement for the conference is it is exactly what they said when they added 2 trams and went away from a true round robin schedule. As always tunnel vision unless someone else has an idea to follow about 3 years late. The Pac12 should’ve stuck by the Rose Bowl and kept to 10 members…The old commish was a money chaser and he wrecked a lot of sensibilities and traditions to show how brilliant he was a tennis guy at the helm of a major college conference.

The new commish needs to face the facts that the Pac12 is always getting crumbs from the SEC/ESPN table and it won’t change until the monolith of ESPN crumbles. I remember in the 80’s/90’s/2000s when the SEC wasn’t viewed as the dominant conference for most major sports, but that is what we get every day from ESPN.

I think the 3 conference alignment with BIG10/ACC/PAC12 was an idea of brilliance. The only way to topple the power structure at this point is to ice them ESPN/SEC out and force them to concede something to get back into the schedules for non-conference/post-season games against any of the teams from those 3 conferences. It is somewhat a “fixed” event as much in football as it is in baseball really for the SEC.

  17. Question. The local rag (gazette times) says that Vanderbilt leads the all time series vs the Beavs 3-2.

I recall the Beavs getting swept in a super regional matchup in Nashville. 2011 I think. Beavs returned the favor in the Corvallis super regional in 2017.

My question? When was that 5th game played? Or maybe it was the first time the Beavs ever played Vandy and before I started following in the early 2000’s?

    • Nevermind. Found it. Beavs played Vandy February 2008 in Tempe and lost 8-1. I honestly have zero recollection of that game ever taking place.

      Probably too many napkins

  18. Time to overthink Mitch’s decision to go with the normal rotation this weekend.

There’s always the thought, use what got you here and don’t change it.

Obviously matching up hjerpe vs nmsu is overkill. Seems like nearly all outside observers are questioning this decision. But it reduces the chances of an upset by a considerable amount. Hitting wise nmsu are no pushovers and after the pac12 tournament, Mitch isn’t about to take a chance no matter how small the risk seems. The bullpen ego may still be fragile after last week.

    • My hope is Mitch is playing the slow hand and will have Kmatz pitch first. Very naive of him to think he will keep his rotation intact throughout the entire tournament — he might as well start getting the strategic matchups now while he can control it.
On the flip side I understand that it may just come down to rest and timing.
NMSU pitching can’t be very good, ERA starts in the low 4.0s and goes way up fast.
Another argument for shaking things up is this team has been in a funk pitching wise over the past 3-4 weeks, and maybe moving the parts around will get em out it.
Agree that Hjerpe seems like overkill, and the Beav bats should take care of NMSU pitching, and should score between 7-10 runs easily.

      • If the tourney schedule is the same as last year, the super regionals for the #3 seed would be a Sat to Monday series. That side of the bracket starts on day two of the cws.

Delaying hjerpe to game 2 would put him on reg rest to open supers.

    • I only see two sound ways to do it. Pitch Hjerpe and leave the rotation in tact or treat Friday like a weekday and pitch Hunter on short rest with bullpen support. Moving around the order is just bad juju, didn’t work for shit in the P12 tourney.

  19. OT: RE NIL craziness, I Saw an article where Buckeye HC Ryan Day told Columbus area business leaders that Ohio State would need $13M/annually to keep its roster intact.

I guess the flip side of having a roster nobody wants is all you need is scholarships…

        • No doubt…[Ryan Day with powerpoint] “Based on our past costs, inflation, and increased competition in today’s market, as this graphic dramatically illustrates, our annual roster maintenance costs are projected to increase 40%! That’s where you, our business leaders come in. We offer a portfolio of tiered NIL investment opportunities that are GUARANTEED to increase your brand awareness, if not profits. Tier 1….”

  20. I get why they do it, but dont like that the only tickets for sale are “All session” only for the regional.
I’d buy a pair, but know i cant go to half of the games. And i dont want those seats to sit empty but have no idea how easy it is to transfer tix to another fan?
    So…..tv it is.

    • I’d guess close contact with COVID but testing negative. Keeping her away from the team until they receive conclusive negative test 3 days after exposure. Just guessing

  21. So I guess we had spots all along if we are able to take a transfer. Joey Golden, defensive lineman. Looks like he had interest from Georgia Tech and Charlotte.

  22. Adley struggling a bit. I kind of thought he’d take a year or two for his hitting to adjust to MLB levels but the 2 errors so far is a bummer.

  23. Latest forecast shows showers/light rain for the entire weekend, which of our visitors will be least impacted?
Does this make San Diego less of a factor?
Without the weather, I (and Beaverpride) had SD as the biggest challenge, still could be.

    • Good thing they aren’t the first matchup. So we’ll see what they have.

      Among common opponents,
Took 3 of 4 from Oregon.
Won 2 of 3 vs grand canyon
Split two mid week games with UC Irvine
Lost 2 of 3 vs Gonzaga in reg season
      Beat portland in conf tourney
Beat zags twice in conf tourney

Probably the most dangerous team but vandy has the most talent.

    • Sounds good to me. No chance Blazers leave the state no matter who buys them though. The NBA wants to add 2 franchises so they can get 3 billion per franchise. Moving a franchise doesn’t get them that.

What’s the news about the Blazers wanting Knight to “publicly disavow the University of Oregon before they accept his group’s offer to buy the team.”

  24. Been watching more than most Adley at bats. Good plate discipline so far, last night against Seattle in the tenth he smoked a ball right into the shift for the final out. Too lazy to look at stats, but what I’ve seen better contact left-handed. I think he’ll be fine…lot to learn when you catching also.

I wonder if the rain forecast will affect how Mitch selects his starters. Looks like Saturday could be a long delay or cancelled outright. Do you throw CH tonight knowing you will most likely get the game in?

Probably first time ever OSU has had two games on ESPN in a day.

  25. Is that bird shit behind home plate to the left of the beaver logo backstop? If so need to get it cleaned up between inning ASAP. Bad for our image as 3 time national champions and does not look good. Don’t think the pads are ripped. Looks like two large white stains.

Barnes better get this literal shit cleaned up ASAP!

  26. San Diego up 3-0 middle of the 4th, will have top of the order up in the t5.
No weather impact so far, listening on Vandy radio, no luck with ESPNU

  27. If you have access through your cable provider, you can livestream all the games on ESPN Watch. No rain at the moment. USD has done everything right so far.

  28. So far both of these teams don’t look like world beaters. San Diego has been the better of the two. I’m not impressed with Vanderbilt at all.

  29. 3-1 Toreros after 7. SD with only 5 hits, Vandy only 4 and committed a pair of infield errors that led to SD first run.

Beavs can beat either of these teams.

  30. Vandy hits another solo bomb. Now 3-2 SD. Cmon extra innings!

Toreros inexplicably pull their starter after only 75 pitches?

  31. Called the large bird poop stains on backstop behind home plate in to Beaver Athletics so can be cleaned before OSU first pitch tonight. Was told would be passed on to the appropriate channels.

Optimistic will be resolved before OSU game on National TV tonight.

  32. I honestly can’t see any games being played tomorrow. Corvallis is predicted to get almost an inch of rain.

  33. They cleaned the bird poop off the backstop. Nice to see that Beavers Athletics listens to concerns and has the organization and care to implement a quick remedy. Two thumbs up for rhe response.

    • Two K’s to end the inning; bigger question is When Are The Beavs Gonna Give Hjerpe Some Run Support?
      4 LOB in first two.

      • Pretty sure the plan is to get deep into pitch counts to drive their starters pitch count up and get him out of the game.

        NM State bullpen is trash.

    • I was so excited to see the bunt. No reason to take a big lead off 2nd there. Very poor decision. Should have been atleast a 2 run inning.

  34. Making this NMSU pitcher look all world with the whole team hacking away at balls left and right. Lots of swings at pitches outside of the zone, then taking strikes right down the middle. Beavs need a big inning quick or this thing is gonna get in their heads.

    • Yup. Top of the order coming up. Need some good AB’s

Beavs have been their own worst enemy so far.

    • Yup, this is NMSU pitcher’s World Series game, and he is doing the little things to get out of innings, and also getting a bit lucky with two or three line drives going right to a fielder. Need to open the can of whoop-ass in the 6th and 7th as he is showing signs of fatigue.

  35. Well, that was cluster F! The oversliding of the bag was bad, but the way Dukart took that pitch, it seemed like he didn’t know he had two strikes on him. WTF?

  36. What is Bazzana doing on the bases? Giving up prime position at 2nd base on consecutive appearances. Disappointing to see carelessness on the basepath.

      • I strongly disagree that this was a bad outing for Hjerpe. He pitched good tonight, not great. Had one bad inning, I am sorry that’s all you can ask from your ace. The mental errors on the base paths and the unpredictable ump has been the bigger problem, IMO.

  37. You could see this building through the game. Bonehead after bonehead play. They thought this was going to come easy.

  38. Hjerpe should have come out as soon as he walked the first batter. NMSU batters just sitting back and watching him implode. For fucks sake!

  39. 3 hbp and 2 walks. Leads to 3 unearned runs. NM St has two fucking hits in this game and a late lead?

As stated earlier. Beavs have been their own worst enemy tonight.

  40. Wild pitch. Beavs lead 4-3. Swinging at some pretty bad pitches though. Was a strike on a check swing by Logan.

          • Not unheard of. I recall just some ho hum pitcher for UW named Tim Lincecum throwing a 147 pitch complete game against the Beavs.

Mejia battled tonight and as stated was very good. The homre pcrowd acknowledged that and he responded. Pretty cool moment.

Be gracious in victory. Be gracious in defeat. Without the opponent there is no game.

But fuck that home plate umpire. Do better blue.

Ladies lose to Arizona 3-1. Tip of the cap to them as well for getting to OKC.

No one expected that. Young team that should be better next year.

    • 3
      1

This is on the players, they weren’t sharp. As much as baseball is a team sport, it’s about individual mindsets.

  42. What’s the saying?

    Fuck around and find out.

Beavs asses are skating on very thin ice right now.

    Dangerous bonus baseball……

    • Forrester and Melton didn’t look experienced. That kid with the 5.72 embarrassed them.

Beavers look self conscious, no confidence.

  43. Beavs bats need to be very aggressive next at-bat. First two pitches from NMSU have been consistently right down the pipe.

  44. I think he almost tripped on the second base bag, lost his balance, and made the shitty throw. Can this game get any weirder?

  45. Why can’t we throw to 1st anymore? At least 3 one-hoppers to first by dernedde and dukart. Some noodle arms out there.

    • I think I’m seeing some double-clutching throughout the night from the infield. Almost like they are playing scared, don’t want to make a bad throw.

      • Yeah. Dernedde definitely has double clutched a lot during this last month. Early in the season I was thinking his defense was worth the horrible batting avg but Trosky isn’t a drop-off defensively and has better at bats. Think he should be the full time guy.

          • In watching the team more closely these last couple of weeks, I’m not impressed by any of the infielder’s arms. Even Bazanna has made some sloppy throws.

  46. Good pitching there by Brown.

Cmon Beavs! Quit fucking around and giving them opportunities! Get tough and end this fucking game!

  47. How about the bottom of the lineup setting the table at least twice tonight for the meat of the Beav lineup and the hitters (outside of Boyd) just chilling with runners in scoring position. Melton really disappointing….love the guy, but he has swung at some serious dirt pitches tonight.

  48. Confused how the OSU twitter acct is ahead of my live stream by a good 5 minutes?
Ive disconnected and restarted and no change

  49. Sometimes wins feel like losses. This feels like a loss.

Dernedde can’t be in the lineup tomorrow. Sorry, Trosky gives competitive at bats and nearly the same defense.

    • Feels like dernedde is good for an error every other game and poor batting is the cherry on top…or is it the other way around?

    • “win feels like a loss”……imagine how Hjerpe feels, the lack of run support in several (5?) games this season is so disappointing. Gotta figure he keeps his cool only by focusing on the MLB scouts who are watching his performance.

    • Great win. Our F game beat their A+ game. Had to battle thru multiple mental errors to get W. I expect they’ll be much better tomorrow. Enjoy this win. Beavs have some glaring weaknesses and with baseball, weird shit happens. NMSU played a hell of a game. Beavs didn’t but still won. I’ll take it LOL

  50. 2
    2

They say “just win baby” but,……That might be the shittiest Beaver win I have ever seen. Good god nobody wanted to win tonight accept for the NMSU pitcher Mejia.
Don’t know what to expect against San Diego tomorrow….this Beaver team has some serious mental shit going on right now.

    • Yeah Mejia battled, thats a dude you can definitely root for.

The beavs are running deer in headlights mode aside from Forrester

    • I blame the lineup changes that happened the last few weeks of the season.
      Should Meckler/Bazanna/Boyd/Forrester/Melton and the rest

      • You want Forrester ahead of Melton? The first three are plus speed, but not Forrester.
Don’t get me wrong, Forrester is on a tear, just not sure you want him slowing up Melton on the basepaths.

        • I’d put Bazzanna 5th. He’s just not a top of the order hitter yet.

Fun fact – in conference play, Fuchs has a higher OBP than Bazzanna even though his batting average is 100 points less.

    • Mitch has to do something to get them fired up, this is a team going through the motions and believe they can show up and win based on pedigree alone. Seriously, get back to the fucking basics and don’t take anything for granted.

    • How does he get them to do a mental reset?………..for one thing, pull Dernedde, for a second thing, give Bazanna either a day off or a tongue lashing. Mitch is too patient to chew out Bazanna but Darwin might.

    • I know Mitch isnt or shouldn’t be Pat Casey, but Casey seemed to be constantly on his guys and getting at them over the small things….Mitch is almost too calm, steady coach, he needs to get some emotion going and get these guys pumped. Get red faced and get pissed after a fuckup!

  51. 2
    1

Feels like the Beavs stole that one. Worst part is they used their two best arms out of the bullpen. A win is a win but it’s gonna take a much better effort against San Diego whether that happens tomorrow or postponed until Sunday.

Gonna need a great pitching performance by Pfennings.

That won’t do Beavs. Clean your shit up if you wanna survive your own regional.

  52. One last thing….

I can empathize with NMSU. We’ve been there. Two words. Greg Street.

Only difference is this home plate umpire tonight was equally bad for both teams.

    • Ferrer pitch probably called strike 3 to put NMSU on their last out maybe slightly over 60% of the time. The ball call gave NMSU life. Was a better pitch than Ball 3 by Bustamonte. Both were close and could go either way. Nothing like Greg Street. This ump wanted to see good pitches. Street was happy if the elevation looked ok and you could make contact with the tip of the bat leaning over.

  53. A lot of luck going both ways tonight. NMSU had the ball bounce their way more than once. How many unintentional sacrifice hits did they get?

Credit to their starter for giving a herculean outing and keeping his team in the game. He was still riding the high of his last two outings. Meija was pretty highly rated coming out of high school. #162 overall in the PG rankings.

They had to know once they went to the bullpen, problems would add up quickly. They’ll probably get clobbered tomorrow.

  54. 1
    1

I think it’s pretty apparent the damage the PAC12 tournament took on the Beavs. The scars of the tournament are still there.

They get a nice long rest before tomorrow night and maybe more if the weather doesn’t comply. Adding an extra day to the regional wouldn’t hurt the beavs that much. I am pretty sure they will be a sat-mon super regional.

According to boyds world ISR calc, the Beavs were expected to win that game 97% of the time. Nearly became that 3%.

  55. 4
    1

Win is a win. Good to get that stinker out of the way but still win. It will take a better effort against USD but I think we’ll bounce back and play much better from here on out. Still not sure if we’ll be good enough to get out of this regional but I’m confident we’ll be better. If you can’t enjoy a win in the post season then what’s the point?

  56. 5
    1

Feel like I keep seeing or hearing “glad we got a bad game out of the way and we’ll get cleaned up by the next one ” for the last month. This is a very different team in nearly all aspects since the start or May in comparison to the March/April team. Errors nearly every game. Mental lapses on defense and routine grounders I’m holding my breath now hoping we don’t one-hop it over to 1st. Pitching has essentially been reduced to about 4 guys…2 starters and 2 bullpen. Everyone else has been not so good. Going to have to take my Dorman props back that I begrudgingly was giving him in the middle of the season.

Survive and advance but this doesn’t build any confidence imo. This was a 16 seed nearly beating a 1 seed in March Madness terms. I don’t think we have the juice to go through a losers bracket so this was an incredibly important win.

    • Spot on! Pitching looks like Dorman’s previous years after what had appeared to be a miraculous turn around. Free bags from hitting batters and walks.

    • I am totally flabbergasted at how bad this team has regressed in all areas of the game. The only good takeaway was that the bottom of the lineup actually did a decent job of being smart at the plate and getting on base. Other than that, everyone took a turn playing like ass.
Gonna get killed against San Diego if the hitting continues to struggle with RISP. Gonna need at least 8 runs to win today.

Think I’d worry about NMSU first. I’m not convinced it will be as easy as we think.

Probably an angry quote but when you’re right? You’re right.

Despite the mostly shit performance? They’re only 4 wins from Omaha. A team that wins their first game in a regional wins said regional 92% percent of the time. The competition only gets tougher. We’ve seen these first game regional squeakers before. Tomorrow brings another opportunity.

    Sleep well Beavs and Beavettes.

  58. 6
    1

    Also forgot to add….

Very classy move by the home crowd at Goss to give Ian Mejia a standing ovation as he left the game in the 8th.

That dude battled the entire game. He was impressive and made pitches when it counted to keep his team in the game. Every time I thought the Beavs were finally going to deliver the knock out blow? He came right back and made pitches with ice in his veins.

The Aggies deserved to win the game just as much as the Beavs did. Maybe even more. That’s baseball.

Double tip of the cap to NMSU tonight. For a team that still has never won an NCAA baseball tournament game they were very close to winning their first one tonight. Beavs were lucky to survive. I’ll be rooting for them to beat Vanderbilt.

  59. 3
    1

Beavs still have to prove they can win a series against a top-notch opponent. Best they’ve done is sweep Hole.

Good news is that they don’t lose series to inferior opponents.

    • From that piece…
“I’m proud our guys came out on top, but you have to take a firm look in the mirror,” OSU coach Mitch Canham said. “We did not play well at all. It was good to get the ‘W,’ but we had a lot of jitters out there. Good to get them out of the way.”

Question is do they play looser or grip tighter?

  60. 2
    1

Anyone else like to see a players only meeting? Thinkin’ Meckler and Forrester could shake some guys out of their funk, more so than Mitch.

Or, maybe Darwin gets in a few faces. Word is he called for the move from 1b coaching to the dugout in order to have a greater in game impact.

    • The guy we went up against last night was their Sunday starter until injuries at the end of the season. The dude NMSU started today threw a high 80s fast ball and a high 60’s slurve. It was batting practice.

The difference between P5 and lower divisions is having atleast 2 high quality starters and a decent bullpen. You are already seeing the difference today with loser bracket P5 teams putting up gaudy numbers.

      • Good question. The NIL has trickled down to all D1 athletes in varying degrees depending on the school and sport.
In her case, as an Adidas school, she receives some of their non-school specific ladies wear, shipped directly to her home address. She also gets some coupons from local restaurants that support the athletic department. These would have been violations before NIL.

  61. Gonzaga staved off elimination today. Grand Canyon got sent packing.

Tennessee losing to Campbell 4-0 in the 3rd inning.

    • Losing game 2 or 3 is a big indication of bullpen strength. If you can’t win game 2 of your regional as a one seed you are probably in deep shit if you manage to get to the CWS.

  62. I’ve been watching some of this Tennessee-Campbell game, and Tennessee is the most arrogant group of pricks I think I’ve ever seen in college baseball. The bat flips especially are over the top, and the coach just radiates d-bag energy. There’s no justice in the universe if they win the CWS.

    • 2
      1

Think I’d like something in between that guy and Canham for demeanor. Sometimes I wonder if Mitch is awake or not. Would be nice to see some fire every once in awhile.

    • Substitute Tennessee with SEC and you’ve got it correct.

I have yet to see an sec team win or lose with grace.

  63. Auburn destroying FSU. Looks like ucla will play FSU again in the early game tomorrow. Auburn will be one win away from advancing.

  64. So rather than go away from a blowout in the 7th inning, Beavs game will start the broadcast on ESPNnews.

  65. Their pitcher is struggling. He has a fastball in the low 90s but his other stuff isn’t working for him. He already has 30 pitches.

  66. Dukart was on my list of guys who might have a breakout regional…….lookin’ good, 2 RBI triple. 4-0 on to the b1 (SD home team tonight).

  67. I had to go to “Schedule & Replays” and then choose the ESPN News Network. It says it’s something else, but it’s actually the beaver game.

  68. Beavs need to keep adding on. No sloppy at-bats. After that debacle against UCLA who the hell knows how many runs is enough?

    • Maybe Texas State is pretty good? Came back and beat UC Santa Barbara last night.

      Stanford is red hot too

  69. 1

Strikes a guy out and then they make a pitching change. At least let him close out the inning unless he struggles but you never know what you’re going to get from your bullpen. SMH

    • He looked shakey to me with the last few batters, but I’d have given him just a little more leash with the 6 run lead.
No more than finishing the inning though.

      • Agree. It just scares me sometimes when the starter is pitching solid and then you go the bullpen and don’t really know what your going to get.

  70. 3
    1

I know the softball team just got eliminated but any rumors about recognizing them at a baseball game this weekend or next? Seems like a good opportunity instead of waiting until football season.

  71. 12-3 final. Looks like the Beavs got those opening game jitters out of their system? Pitching was good. Townsend was good in relief. Bats came to life. Plenty of extra base hits.

Nothing really much to complain about tonight. In the cat birds seat now and one win away from hosting a super regional. Get it tomorrow (weather permitting of course).

    That’ll do Beavs. That’ll do.

      • He did he say it’s OSU or MLB for him. Who knows if that will remain the case or not. Hopefully if he leaves, Mitch realizes he needs to fill the “bad cop” role with someone else.

  72. 1

Beavs the only PAC-12 team staying in the winners bracket. Everyone else will have to go through the losers bracket.

    • “The Bruins will return to action at 11 a.m. on Sunday for another elimination game against the loser of the upcoming winner’s bracket showdown between Auburn and Florida State. If they were to win that game, UCLA would then have to win two Regional Final games to advance to the Super Regionals.”

“The spot in the Auburn Regional Final that was on the line was decided well before the game came to an end. Auburn’s (39-19) seven-run fourth inning paved the way to an easy 21-7 win over the Seminoles (34-24) at Plainsman Park in Auburn, Ala.

The Tigers’ 21 runs are the second-most FSU has allowed in a game in program history.

Now, FSU will need to make an impressive run with three wins over the next two days starting Sunday at 2 p.m. against UCLA or its season will come to an end.”

So UCLA and FSU back at it again tomorrow…

      • All elimination games early tomorrow (west coast times)

        Arizona/Canisuis 8am
        Oregon/Louisville 9am
        UCLA/Florida St 11am
        Stanford/UC Santa Barbara 1pm

  73. anyone have a link to a furd blog? go mighty card is football only. their game against uc santa barbara should be a good one. I’d guess u$c has probably contacted checkitts about HC.

  74. Weather for game one looks like it’ll be fine.

Hopefully game two will be played tonight as well. Potential huge advantage for the Beavs if the winner of the elimination game burns a lot of arms. Either way, both teams will have to throw their mid week guy or piece together a bullpen outing.

Feeling like Vandy will win. San Diego is essentially playing a 3 game power conference series right now. Don’t think they have it in them to win another.

  75. UNC athletic director “Bubba” Cunningham (no relation to Richie?) isn’t happy with a two game suspension of their HC over an infield fly rule non-call.

Sounds like the suspension was because the HC argued after being ejected. Head Coach Scott Forbes hung his jersey in the dugout for motivation the following game.
Google search shows that neither Mark Buchanan nor Greg Street was involved.

    https://www.yahoo.com/news/unc-ad-says-two-game-180134762.html

  76. Looks like Ok ST and Missouri St are looking to join the new west coast men’s softball collegiate conference. Score is 21-15 in the 8th. Joining charter members schools UCLA and Oregon St.

    Go Beavs

  77. Vandy up 5-2 after 4, their pitcher has gone all the way so far on 61 pitches.
SD on their 3rd arm, is home team so Vandy may still need to use a couple from the pen.

  78. Oregon sent packing. First PAC-12 team sent home.

UCLA beat FSU 2-1 and will play auburn in the regional final but will have to beat them twice.

    Arizona also staved off elimination.

Stanford losing 4-3 to UCSB in the 6th.

Vanderbilt leading San Diego 7-3 in the 7th

  79. Vandy up 14-4 in the 9th. Pretty safe bet the Beavs will be facing them at 6.

Ole Miss beats Miami. Arizona will play the Canes at 4:50 in another elimination game for the Cats

  80. What channel will Beav vs Vanderbilt be on? Lots of regional final games tonight and I can ESPN having an SEC jerk fest.

    • my comcast guide says the espn2 is the only network carrying a game starting at 6pm and beavs/vandy is the only 6pm game.

I would think they would choose Beavs and Vandy as they are two blue blood programs and winners of 2 of the last 3 national titles.

  81. Beavs will be the away team for the potential clinching game. They would be the home team in the winner take all game on Monday.

This will be a very tough game. Vandy didn’t blow through their bullpen in any of their games. Not sure who they will start but their offense is rolling along. Kmatz has his work cut out for him. He’ll need a good amount of offensive support tonight.

    • I’m nervous. I’m hoping that SD just didn’t have much quality left in their bullpen. Beavs bullpen is pretty fresh. Townsend probably the only bullpen arm unavailable tonight. Need To get 5-6 out of Kmatz. I think Sebby should be the first arm out of the bullpen when that time comes.

  82. I’m too lazy to go look at who posted it, but I just saw a replay of the Drew Gilbert home run against Campbell yesterday…..

He hits it, starts walking up the first base line admiring it, then turns and looks at the pitcher and flips his bat several feet in the air before he starts trotting to first.

First class dickhead. If I were Campbell the next time he got in the box id have thrown it at his head for those Bush league antics.

    • That’s a combination of shitty parenting and shitty coaching.

And yes, he should take the next pitch off his helmet.

  83. I know two out hits cannot always be counted on, but it was a missed opportunity to start the game with pressure on Vandy.

  84. 1
    1

Time to take the freshman pitcher out I think. Beavs down to install a 15% chance to win this game already. Not sure we even escape this Regional unless we pull it together quick.

  85. Out of the 2nd down 3…………the importance of getting at least a run in the t3 cannot be understated. Top of the order due up.

  86. 1
    3

Wow. Getting spanked. Also, rest of America will be pissed at the Beavs if Vandy advances and they have to listen to the whistler.

  87. How can you regress so badly on defense? How long is Dorman going to let Kmatz get shelled? Seen 1 blooper that scored a run but otherwise they’ve been all over him. We just giving up this game and trying to save arms for the elimination game?

  88. So, Dorman is gonna pull AJ after 48 pitches. Brings in Boisvert…….given history I’m really not sure he is throwing in the towel, probably so.

  89. These guys are mentally shot and definitely not gonna out-athlete anybody anytime soon. Mighty SEC kicking everyone’s ass!

  90. Beavs looking like they are fine being skunked tonight. Such a lackluster outing. Can’t string together hits and way too many mistakes throughout. Vandy rolling…

    • That’s right.
Still, good to see Meckler make that catch to finish the 6th…gotta fire up the team………for tomorrow.

  91. 7
    3

We all knew in the back of our minds this team just doesn’t have “it” to win it all, unfortunately I think they know it too now. Hope I’m wrong, but I don’t see them winning tomorrow. You can’t get runs against Vandy’s third or fourth string starter, then you don’t belong in this tournament. They’ve skated by on their athleticism, but they are not going anywhere without their heads in the game and certainly not without Melton showing up. Sucks but Dorman is not the answer, he doesn’t have his pitchers prepared at all — certainly has had these guys looking a 3-seed since we’ll over a month ago — since the competition just wasn’t that good. Gonzaga, Oregon, UCLA, and even Stanford not as good as we all thought.

  92. 1
    1

Well glad we got the bad game out of the system. Lol. Team looks out of gas. Wish Trosky would get playing time. Dernedde not even that good defensivley the last month not sure what you lose by playing Trosky. Melton injury definitely seems worse than what they’ve been saying. I wasn’t expecting this team to win it all, not even sure about Omaha, but I was expecting to make super regional. New day tomorrow but wow, this team seems out of it.

  93. Auburn rolling ucla. So either they’ll host Vandy or come to Corvallis SR.

Arizona eliminated host Miami this evening and will have to beat Ole Miss twice tomorrow.

Stanford leading Texas St 5-3. They need to hang on to force a decisive game tomorrow in Palo Alto.

  94. Just like the game vs San Diego, it’s gonna all be about the first two innings tomorrow. Gotta dampen the spirits of Vandy early.

  95. DP to end the b8, just like Meckler’s nice catch at the wall this will help Beavs spirits and knowledge that they can prevail Monday. Just need to play the kind of D that got them here………..well that and get some runs.

  96. Every time I pay attention another Beaver is hitting an infield ground ball. Regroup for tomorrow is all that’s left.

  97. Stanford wins and Auburn/UCLA was suspended in the 6th inning with Auburn ahead 9-0. So tomorrow…………….

Auburn/UCLA at noon (resumption of suspended game)
Ole Miss/Arizona at 9am (Arizona will need to win to force a decisive 2nd game)
Beavs/Vanderbilt at 1pm (regional championship game)
Texas St/Stanford at 7pm (regional championship game)

11 regionals will be decided on Monday

Teams that have already advanced to SR

    Tennessee
    Notre Dame
    Virginia Tech
    Texas A&M
    Texas

  98. Which one of you AB degenerates is gonna head down to the Vanderbilt team hotel and pull the fire alarm at 2am????

  99. 1
    2

Vanderbilt pitching hasn’t allowed more than 4 runs in a game, and is scoring 11 runs per game on average. They are playing with house money and Beavs are playing tight — expect a little bit better game on Monday, but not enough to overcome beating yourself and the other team.
Vandy 8 – Beavs 5…. Beav reputation takes a hit, as the same nagging problems persist during this month of .500 baseball.

  100. Just being a realist — People forget this Vandy team has 6 position players and 3 pitchers leftover from last year’s CWS runner up — they know how to win in this tournament.
If Vandy does win I hope they go on to kick Tennessee in the teeth — at least Vandy is half way classy for an SEC team.

    • They’ve got all the confidence in the world right now. All the pressure is on the Beavs tomorrow.

For some unknown reason? I think the Beavs get it done tomorrow. Hunter will start. Sebby and Ferrer should be available to eat the middle innings. Ryan Brown to close it out. We shall see.

    • Agree, Vandy does seem to be half way classy for an SEC team.
The same unknown reason Whiskey mentioned is lurking in the back of my mind, I’m not counting Miiiitch out.

We’ll know by the end of the second or third inning, Beavs not built to come back (especially with Melton in a funk) and Vandy will come in with confidence.

  101. 2
    7

Why dh Guerra against a lefty and then hit for him with Dukart against the same lefty?? Canham has no idea what he’s doing. I see a loss on Monday and another disappointing season.

      • Out athleting with who? I laid out every single dude on our roster and it is not an elite roster at all. Who are our elite recruits?

          • The issues are mental. Walks, errors, and HBP’s that were virtually nonexistent until mid May are now happening with regularity.
They were out executing teams and not beating themselves. Teams is not peaking for the postseason, in fact doing just the opposite. That is on the coaching staff. The defensive miscues are the most inexcusable.

          • Definitely some serious mental issues. At-bats have regressed, watching middle-of-the-plate pitches go by, then swinging at junk. Add base-running errors to the list. The team has not been sharp fundamentally the last half of the season. It is a big contrast to Casey’s teams.

          • 1
            1

I was in the middle of my long winded write-up when you wrote this, so excuse the repetition. Yes absolutely mental shit going on. We were all that age once, trying to figure out ourselves and our place in life. Really looking forward to Mitch maturing as a coach too. Sucks that we all bought into the hype due to pedigree and these guys may not be any further than they were at this point last year. Circumstances are different, and if anything more frustrating now they are seeded and playing at home, putting too much pressure on themselves. They matchup really well against Vandy if they can get it together as a unit and just kick some ass like we know they are capable of.

          • Agreed for the most part. The players still have to execute, but the coaches have to coach-up a bit and shake some cages when the player(s) get rattled — probably too late if we are having this argument in the postseason. But for argument’s sake, if players are used to a coach being stern with a steady hand, not berating, but emphasizing the details in fundamentals with a toughness approach, then the players would already know by now that the little things do matter. Bazzana over running bases and getting picked off tells me this team has a discipline problem, not in the sense that this team is egregiously fucking up with attitude issues, just that Mitch hasn’t set clear boundaries for his players. It is not always about win-win-win and swing for the fences, it is about discipline at the plate and not swinging at dirt balls (Melton) and take the ball call and let the next man up get his pitch. I am seeing a bit of lack of discipline and selfishness because Mitch hasn’t set firm guard rails for these guys to stay within. I’ll put it this way, having the autonomy to do whatever you want is great whenever things are clicking, but it is clear to me that we have several players playing selfishly putting way too much pressure on themselves to do too much. The walks, HBPs, and passed balls and leaving as many runners in scoring position that this team has over the last several weeks tells me they are playing as individuals and not as a team. There are only three players playing consistently outside of themselves right now — Meckler, Boyd, and Forrester — the rest are a bunch of head cases, and that’s on the coaches.

          • 2
            1

Yeah the mental stuff is on the staff. A big criticism of mine from the start was Mitch wanted to play doctor and pretend he’s a psychologist and dad to these players. Well, a head coach who thinks he’s a psychologist yet has zero training isn’t a great asset going into a series when mental toughness is the most important trait. I noted about a month ago as the pressure was building the guys seemed to be collapsing under that pressure. This is on the staff for overthinking things, playing doctor, etc. It’s ridiculous to have a HC who wants to take on those roles just so he looks smart and create an images to distinguish himself from other coaches. Hire outside help, an actual sports psychologist, for that. Ironically, he looks stupid to anyone who understands what’s going on there.

          • It’s not. He has some very impressive recruiting classes for 2022,2023 and 2024 because he is a good recruiter.

The 2020 was barely Mitches and it’s best recruit Mike Abel went in the first round. 2021 is very solid except Weber and Reed came in hurt and haven’t been able to play much at all. From that class we have Bazanna, Trosky, Smith and Kmatz who were National recruits (outside of Baz) and have done really well this year. Guerra and Quinn are also in that class and have put in some time this year.

Our best players on offense are Melton who was a complete unknown transfer, Meckler who has been dropped from the team twice, Forrester who was a regional talent and Boyd who is probably the highest ranked recruit of the current fielders and he was ranked 337 nationally.

Our roster is not elite at all. It’s promising young players and a load of transfers and guys that stuck around through the transition. Go back and look at the breakdown post or do your own research.

          • 2
            5

When I asked what Mitch was good at, everyone unanimously said “elite recruiter”…you can’t change the narrative now that his team is choking.

          • Look at the recruiting classes and stop being lazy. His 2022, 2023 and 2024 class are elite. Current roster is still heavily Pat Bailey and Casey except for the sophomores, frosh and transfers. 2021 is way above average. Smith was the second best catcher in the class and is budding star. Baz is lights out for a frosh. Trosky is probably the starting SS next year unless Dernedde gets a hell of a lot better at the plate. Kmatz has started all year as a #2 or #3 as a frosh.

Again I ask where are the athletes that are elite and winning the games despite the coaches. You never answer, you just deflect or ignore the post.

          • Who said it was an elite roster? It’s heavily tilted toward the younger guys (i.e. Mitch recruits) and there’s really good talent on the top end. The classes we have coming in are great. But there’s basically no seniors because the ‘good but not good enough to get drafted’ depth guys all left. So our depth are the talented, but inexperienced guys like Trosky and Guerra.

It’s been well known all season the bullpen is thin. We’ve leaned heavily on a freshman and inexperienced sophomore to take a bunch of starts.

Seems like the pattern of this season is exactly what you’d expected from a talented, but inexperienced lineup: hot out of the gate, but sputtering toward the end of the season when focus and discipline become challenging due to fatigue.

          • What’s a little scary is where the offense comes from next year. You have bazzana and Forrester but I think everyone else at the top who actually produces will be gone via draft or eligibility. There needs to be some serious growth by the bench and regular rotation guys right now if this offense is going to do anything next year. No Boyd. No Melton. No meckler(?). That’s like 80% of the offense. You’d think if we had some really good young offensive talent that they’d have been getting some real playing time since we have 4 guys batting .250 or worse (much worse). I’m sure someone we’re not expecting will take some steps forward during summer leagues but it’s a little concerning looking at things so far.

          • @in OH. Angry has claimed we are out athleting people all season and lose because of Mitch.

I agree with what you are saying though. We have lots of young potential but it’s really young. If Trosky, Baz, Smith and Guerra can develop as well as Meckler, Boyd and Forrester were looking at a very dependable batting order.

  102. 2
    1

I can stomach the occasional error, but crap like jogging to a loop single allowing it to become a double is inexcusable. That kind of crap would never happen on a Pat Casey team. These guys look uninspired at best.

  103. ESPN currently shows our game, with a PAC12 team as the host and home team, being broadcast on the SEC network. WTF? I’m sure it be shown on ESPN somewhere, but to have that as the default is seriously f’ed up.

  104. Regardless of half this board thinking we shouldn’t even show up at Goss…I mean what’s the point?

Vandy has to win four straight-tough ask. I think the Beavs bounce back.

  105. FYSA – If anyone is interested in buying OSU vs. Montana State football tickets, they go on sale today at seatgeek.

Hope some other degenerates will be in attendance.

  106. Which team do we get today? Jekyll or Hyde? Can we play defense? Can we actually get guys on base and move them over? Do we fold like a table cloth or we bounce back and act like a top 8 seed?

  107. The Pac 12 hosting a post season elimination game that is only broadcast on the SEC network is right on par for the Pac12

  108. 1
    2

Can we send the bottom 3 or 4 guys out there without the bat? Or they still going to swing on those pitches in the dirt?

  109. 2
    1

Hunter starting to fade a little bit. 57 pitches. Leadoff walk in the 4th. Gives up 2 run Homer next batter. Dorman gonna wait until we’re down 5 runs again or make a move?

  110. What is Dorman doing? A teachable moment for Hunter? This is a do or die game….should be all hands on deck, no more runs allowed.

  111. Surprised vandy made a pitching change. Starter was at 70 pitches. I’m not able to listen to the game so maybe I’m missing more to the story? Only gave up 2 hits. Seemed to have been in a decent groove. Relief pitcher has a 4.2 era so not too shabby.

      • Fait, but he hadn’t given any indication he was even close to trouble. Lol. Dorman waits too long, this guy jumps the gun. It’s not a science I guess.

    • Robbery! He’s had a couple really impressive catches today. Robbed the Beavs of 2 runs so far. Out athleting the shit out of the Beavs

  112. Their pitcher throws hard but other than that not too impressive. Beavs are getting some good contact off of him.

  113. 1
    1

Dernedde almost becoming a liability at short. Where the fuck is Trosky? Better bat. Definitely not any worse on defense. Dernedde has benefits having serious problems throwing the ball any farther than tosses to 2nd base.

  114. Boy we are good at killing momentum. Really good unfortunately. Can you bet on these games? Maybe Derneddre needed one more for Vandy on his ticket.

  115. Sebby gets out of it with a K.

Gotta piece together 2 innings to get to Ryan Brown.

And add a few more runs.

  116. 1
    1

I get most catchers aren’t the fastest guys on the team but dam, watching Logan run up the line on that grounded was painful to watch.

  117. our baserunners have been terrified to run from 1st to 3rd all series. Paul Bunyan in right field must have a reputation of gunning guys down.

    • I think it was yesterdays game announcers were saying he showed that arm strength on a play where our runner wasn’t even attempting to go to third and he apparently gunned in there anyway must have put the fear of god in the boys

  118. No one more relieved to win then Dernedde.

This game probably doesn’t have the dramatic finish without that error.

I’d almost forgotten how these postseason games are not good for the old blood pressure.

Stop it Beavs! Last thing I need right now is a heart attack.

    Bring on another SEC opponent.

    • Dernedde should take the first game off at the Supers — that dude is swimming in his head right now. Let him gather himself from the bench and take a day off.

  119. It will be interesting to see how the rotation is get up for the Super. Don’t have much confidence in anyone other than Copper and he won’t be able to start until game 2.

    • 2
      1

Pfennings will start game 1 on a full week of rest since the SR won’t start until Saturday. Hjerpe would start Sunday, Kmatz on Monday if neccessary

      • I like the way that sets up. Glad we started Cooper vs NMSU… I initially questioned Mitch’s intelligence with this decision until I realized it would allow Cooper to close out a game 7… and then it played out perfectly. Got to give Mitch credit for this strategy. It may have been the difference considering how poorly the Beavs played in this regional.

        • 2
          1

Yup, if you can count on Mitch for one thing it’s to think a whole bunch. Worked out fantastically in this one.

Hunter with Ferrer, Sebby and Hjerpe in relief is just nuts. The only reason the game was close was fielding errors. If Dernedde fields that one cleanly the beavs put Sebby in with a commanding lead.

  120. Gotta give credit to pitchers and Dorman tonight. Seemed like every middle inning (2-7) pitchers got out of some nasty jams with minimal damage considering the errors, etc. Got to get the walks down a bit, but overall a step in the right direction.

  121. Arizona getting blasted by Ole Miss. Stanford is the only other Pac-12 team that can get to the SR

Teams that have advanced to SR

    Tennessee
    Notre Dame
    Virginia Tech
    Texas A&M
    Texas
    Louisville
    Auburn
    Southern Miss
    Oregon State
    East Carolina

  122. 6
    2

Vandy is a solid club. 9 returning players from 2021 CWS team. Speed, power, solid pitching, well coached, classy. Beavs played like ass and still advanced. Regional report card…
    NMSU – F
    USD – B
    Vandy – D minus
    Vandy – C minus
Hoping for our A game vs Auburn
    Go Beavs!

  123. Add Ole Miss and North Carolina as SR participants. 4 spots left. Oklahoma leading Florida 5-3 in the 9th, Arky up 5-0 on Ok State in the 6th and UConn leading Maryland 10-7 in the 7th. Texas St and Stanford first pitch at 7

  124. 18

Miiiiiiitch! Big win for the Beavs and a big step forward for Canham reaching the supers. Even Dorman made great decisions in an elimination game.

    Angry must be sad…

  125. Told ya’ll the Big ten and specifically Maryland wasn’t shit and had an inflated record because of their conference. 3 seed UConn wins that regional

    Maryland? Suck it
    Michigan? Suck it
Rutgers and their crybaby fans? Suck it

  126. Super regional update……all games now final except Stanford/Texas St and they are tied at 1 in the the 4th. Super regionals are shown with their potential opponent in Omaha. Ex, the OSU/Auburn winner would face the Southern Miss/Ole Miss winner in Omaha. If they both make it, Stanford would be on OSU’s side of the bracket but they could not potentially face each other until the 2nd game or later.

    Bracket 1

    Tennessee hosts Notre Dame
    East Carolina hosts Texas

    Virginia Tech hosts Oklahoma
    Texas A&M hosts Louisville

    Bracket 2

    *Stanford/Texas St winner hosts UConn
    North Carolina hosts Arkansas

    Oregon St hosts Auburn
    Southern Miss hosts Ole Miss

*I think Texas St would host UConn if they win tonight as they are the higher seeded team and their stadium holds more capacity. But I could be wrong.

    • Rooting for Stanford, every other pac team but beavs being bumped lends to the the false narrative that sec/acc is the be all end all of college baseball

    • Great to check in and see the Beavers won. I didn’t get a chance to watch today so just saw the good news here this evening.

Meaningful progress for the coaching staff and team.

  127. 10

A lot of people might be bemoaning the Beavers play, but the fact they won the regional not really playing their best ball is a good sign. Not to mention the responded in a big way after getting gut punched by a hot Vandy team. Also, are there any more Gretlers coming through to carry on the family legacy of being clutch as hell for Oregon State baseball?

    • 3
      1

I’m not sold on that narrative. They’ve had four straight weeks where they have struggled in more games than what would be expected. It might be their new identity.

      • PAC 12 regular season runner up, advanced to P12 championship, top 3 National seed, advanced to super, 47-16 record… not playing to there full potential. I’ll take it. This team has a lot of strengths but their weaknesses and mistakes have been huge. The fact they’ve been able to overcome is extremely encouraging because even at their worst they can win. If this team can get to Omaha, the pressure will lift and they could easily get hot and win it. The last few weeks of adversity will help this team IMO

  128. Auburn has played 59 games this year and only 18 were true road games. 10-8 record. These SEC schedules are really something.

    • Pretty simple equation for the beavs. The bats show up and produce we win. Unless it’s UCLA. Thank the universe we don’t have to play them again.

        • Exactly. Great game to watch btw.

The point being, we like to say the sec is over represented and pac is difficult to get through yet only one maybe two will make the supers

  129. Dernedde has to be on a short leash. Since the regular season ended, his fielding percentage is .837. 7 errors in 9 games. He netted out to zero today but he has been a big net negative on the teams results. If he hits a little bit and makes no errors, this team is making Omaha. It all does seem like it’s between the ears.

  130. The Beavs will need to pitch well, too. Auburn is a good team.

Today was encouraging because only five hits were given up. Reducing the walks and HBPs will improve our chances.

  131. Texas state pitcher has gone a full 7 innings, 101 pitches and held Furd to 1 run. Hot damn that’s impressive

      • Yeah I saw that. The “leftovers” of the West UCSB, and a red hot Texas State team, while other regionals get Alabama State, Canisius, Wright State, Columbia, etc teams getting 20+ runs on them.

    • Stanford with some arrogant play early on not respecting the TS outfielders arms, and pitchers mouthing off to the TS players. Perhaps Stanford deserves it.

  132. Hmm a very fun super regional to watch. UNC vs Arkansas. I wonder that they have in common? Oh yeah, they don’t have any national titles because of the Beavs.

  133. Initial thoughts after looking at Auburn stats………………AS a team they average .292. A little bit better than Vandy. Their best hitter is Sonny DiChiara with a .397 average and 20! HR’s. No one else on that team has hit more than 8. They have 6 guys batting .300 or better. They can hit that’s for sure.

Beavs team batting average is .298.

Pitching wise, they aren’t as good as Vandy. Team ERA of 4.47 which is just over a half run worse per game (Vandy was 3.95). Beavs team ERA is 4.19.

It appears looking at some of their box scores they’ve gone with a couple different guys on Friday nights and sometimes it’s been by committee.

Trace Bright (4-4, 4.80 ERA in 15 starts), Joseph Gonzalez (7-2, 2.90 ERA in 12 starts), Mason Barnett (3-2, 4.13 ERA in 12 starts) appear to be their 3 main starters. Hayden Mullins (2-1, 3.63 ERA in 8 starts) is another option. He may have started some conference games or mainly been a weekday game starter. Honestly I have no idea. Just going off the stats here. The closer is Blake Burkhalter with 13 saves, and 4.02 ERA in 27 appearances. They have a few other reliable arms in the pen. Their two most reliable arms are Chase Allsup (2.67 ERA in 21 appearances) and John Armstrong (2.76 ERA in 16 appearances).

Fielding the teams are identical. Each has committed 41 errors on the season.

Shapes up to be a good SR. If the Beavs have a couple clean games? Well, they should win. If they throw the ball all over the place, miss routine grounders for 2-3 errors a game, continue walking and hitter batters? They could just as easily lose this series.

Lastly, Auburn took 2 of 3 at home vs Vanderbilt in early April.

    Should be fun.

      • Shit, that was actually easy. Their stats are sort able on their website……

        In conference play

Batting Avg is only .267 (Beavs at .273 in conference). DiChiara’s average falls down to .337 with 11 HR’s. Blake Rambusch actually has the better average at .347.

Gonzalez and Mullins are their only 2 pitchers with an ERA under 4. Team ERA jumps up to 5.85 (Beavs at 3.47 in conference). 29 of their 41 errors were committed in conference play.

As a team they average just over 5-1/2 runs per game (5.58). Beavs average over 1 run better per game in conference play at 6.63.

Now could some of those numbers be inflated due to playing in the south??? Maybe??

        • from my previous post……….

“Gonzalez and Mullins are their only 2 pitchers with an ERA under 4. Team ERA jumps up to 5.85 (Beavs at 3.47 in conference).”

The Beavs have 7 pitchers with an ERA under 4 in conference play. Ferrer 2.13, Pfennings 2.37, Hjerpe 2.53, Lattery 2.77, Brown 2.84, Sebby 2.86 and Kmatz 3.53.

Gonzalez is at 3.20, Mullins at 3.29 and Chase Allsup at 4.50.

Beavs have 6 pitchers with better numbers than their top 2 pitchers. What does it all mean? Probably jack shit but the Beavs do have statistically better numbers in conference play. Albeit in different conferences and different climates.

No way to know except to put em between the white lines and let them play.

      • To Add……for comparison only…..

        Vanderbilt in conference play stats

Team Batting average .269. Spencer Jones was their best hitter in average and HR’s. I think we all saw that this weekend.

Team ERA 5.44 and averaged 5.93 runs per game.

Statistically speaking? Vanderbilt had a little bit better numbers than Auburn did in conference play.

  134. Waiting on the super regional schedule, I was looking at past brackets. I thought each side of the bracket would play the same super regional schedule so that they would have the same number of off days going into Omaha. That has not always been true so the Beavs could open Fri or Sat. Friday might be better since Auburn has to travel so far.

ESPN time slots on Friday are 9am, 12:30pm, 3pm and 6pm.

    Sat is 8am, 8:30am, 9am, 11am, 11:30am, 12pm, 2:30pm and 6pm.

Beavs or Stanford are getting that 6pm time slot on Friday. 3 supers are in CST, don’t think they’ll want to start at 8pm local.

  135. Forgot to add…..

Parker said on the post game show that Hank Haeger informed him this will be the first ever meeting in baseball between Auburn and OSU.

Hopefully Goss is loud and gives the Tigers a proper welcome this weekend.

  136. Last post of this late night……….

Beavs advanced to their 8th super regional

2005 – Beat USC in Corvallis super regional
2006 – Beat Stanford in Corvallis super regional
2007 – Beat Michigan in Corvallis super regional
2011 – Lost to Vanderbilt in Nashville super regional
2013 – Beat Kansas St in Corvallis super regional
2017 – Beat Vanderbilt in Corvallis super regional
2018 – Beat Minnesota in Corvallis super regional

6-1 all time in super regionals and have never lost at Goss. Only loss was in Nashville in 2011. Good Juju

So where we at on Mitch today? Admittedly he’s not perfect but should we still be looking for a new coach? Are we still sliding into irrelevance as predicted? Does he finally cave next year when all the Casey/Bailey super athletes move on like Meckler, Gretler, Dukart, Melton and Logan? I am disappointed in the pitching staff, they only lost 9 contributors in the off season.

    2020 – 5-9
    2021 – 37-24 lost regional in 5
2022 – 47-16 won hosted regional, hosting SR. (Final results pending)

He’s hovering at 64% wins and hasn’t missed a post season. Not bad for $375K a year.

    • I’d say he’s met expectations this year. Minimum expectations are making the tourney every year. Supers and Omaha are expected depending on the roster.

Only one person is not on board with Mitch. Mitch is getting fired if he misses two tourneys in a row. So he’ll be around for a while.

      • Bill how do you rank this Roster? To me they have been punching above the talent belt in quite a few match ups if you look at recruiting rankings. I think we are good at finding missed talent (who was recruiting Baz? Forrester only got 1 D1 offer, Melton was at freaking Linfield) but I see this roster as more of a transition roster still than solidly a Mitch recruiting roster. Much like smith in year 3 they are looking pretty good but still reliant on young players and transfers.

        What’s your take?

        • Bazzana was pure luck. No one scouts Australia for college talent. And I think I read somewhere his dream school was OSU.

I don’t think they are out performing their talent. They’re really just a veteran team that had time to develop. The covid year probably helped them.

      • My expectation was super regionals once it was known that Mundt would be out for the year.

With him I’d thought OSU would be a lock for Omaha.

    • Casey finished at OSU 900–458–6 (.662) with warts, so Canham either:
      •has more warts,
•is still riding the Casey good vibes wave,
•doesn’t count because time span isn’t long enough,
      •too analytical,
      •not analytical enough,
      •too calm,
      •poor recruiter,
•too good at recruiting/out athletes comp
      •all of the above

      ??

    • Game 1 – Saturday at 7:30pm on ESPN 2
Game 2- Sunday at 7 pm on ESPN 2
Game 3 – If necessary on Monday TBD

      Go you Beavs!

      • Not that surprising really. Not 100% sure but Sunday would have been his bullpen day anyways. A starter like Hjerpe would throw 20-30 real pitches. Rest doesn’t mean they don’t throw at all. Hjerpe basically did his bullpen session on the field but added in 4000 insane fans, a crap load of adrenaline and fully flexed his massive legendary balls.

  138. Quick glance at Auburn’s win over UCLA appears as if Auburn mashed their way to victory 11-4, but the stats tell a different story. UCLA appears to have run out of pitching and costly errors (2) led to a couple big innings for Auburn. Auburn had only one home run, but had several doubles after UCLA had walked (7 total) and hit batsman (5). Credit to Auburn for taking advantage of UCLA’s anemic pitching, but the game was only 2-0 Auburn after 3 innings. In that stretch, UCLA starting a new guy (I assume) with a 12.0 era, walked and beaned a guy before throwing several guys in the mid 4s era. UCLA hitters had 4 walks themselves. Difference in the game being the huge difference in free bases (12 for Auburn, 4 for UCLA), and errors — Auburn playing a relatively clean game.

    • It’s the main thing I don’t like about the NCAA baseball post season. Teams having to play 5 games in 3-4 days. I get that they want to reward teams for having a deep bullpen, but for a sport with only 11 scholarships, that’s pretty difficult for any team to build up that type of depth.
So it comes down to either overusing arms, or throwing an untested freshman out there and hoping to avoid damage.
And most of the season, you’re playing 3 games in a weekend, rather than 5. The regular season doesn’t prep teams very well for these 4 team double elimination series.

      • Yeah I read a Twitter comment somewhere….”this is the time of year we find out who will and who won’t blow out their arms for their team….” LOL

      • It’ll get better in the next couple years. With the major leagues reducing the number of minor league teams and the number of rounds in the draft, more fringe high school guys will come to school. Overall quality will be get better and deeper.

    • I only made it about a minute. They don’t.

Look at any stat that matters and they are worse than us. Filter for conference and they get worse (we actually improve in conference). Their bullpen is bottom half of the SEC.
