Home Football Fall Camp 2022 Is Here

Fall Camp 2022 Is Here

432

Another Fall camp is upon us.  This might be the least tuned in I’ve been during a summer off-season, so I really don’t know what to expect out of this group this year.

On Offense:

Returning QB (but may have already hit his ceiling)
Replacing a couple OL
Replacing RB1
Most productive WRs are returning.
Replacing TQ

On Defense:

DL should be stronger
DBs should be stronger
Replacing ILB1
OLB should be stronger
New DC

What are you hoping to see out of this camp?  What are your expectations for the season?

Also, sounds like we should have a few more verbal commits in the month of August.

I’m hoping to enjoy another month of Summer before really getting into football season. Hope that’s not OSU’s approach.

Go Beavs!

It’s crazy to me that so many tickets remain for the game up in Portland vs Mt State.
Providence park is much smaller than Reser. Tix are as low as $7, and Mt State usually travels well.

Given the reasons above, why are so many tickets still remaining? Is it poor marketing? or the fact that they’re only available via SeatGeek, which most people may not be familiar with?
If we can’t fill this stadium up, there really is no reason to finish the missing side of Reser. Just set up a row of folding chairs on the sideline and be done with it.

    https://seatgeek.com/oregon-state-beavers-vs-montana-state-bobcats-football-tickets/ncaa-football/2022-09-17-3-30-am/r/5601322

    • Maybe just because its Montana State in Portland, time TBD? I don’t feel motivated to go to Portland to watch a game they SHOULD win and would regret the opportunity cost (travel time plus game time) if they have an embarrassing loss.

But I live in NE Oregon, have little interest in Portland, and have only traveled to Corvallis for conference games. I’ve also run to Pullman for a few games OSU/WSU games.

    • Seems like OSU “retired” the bulk of its ticketing department last year for something “new.”

Heard the news of Scully’s passing and immediately wanted to hear Mike Parker’s reaction – he was calling a Corvallis Knights game. To say it was moving, doesn’t do it justice – and in true Scully fashion, he gave this tribute without missing a pitch and keeping the game (10-0 at the time) in the forefront. A great tribute. I hope it will be made available widely.

NW PDX is a crime-ridden shithole now.
It’s so bad, store owners have banded together for security because the PPB is non-existent:
      https://www.koin.com/news/crime/nw-portland-businesses-hire-armed-security-amid-rising-crime/

Most folks who would go to this game don’t live in Portland. It’s a hard sell to convince people to either:
      1) Make the drive and park –> risk getting your car stolen or your catalytic converter jacked
      2) Take the Max –> See people shoot up, get harassed for money or straight up assaulted

Well, i’m in the stadium right now. Parking wasnt sketchy. Downtown was clean. This is in SW rather than NW PDX. Stadium is nice. Hasnt felt very shit-holey….

North of 26 but west of the Willamette is considered NW. South of 84 but east of the Willamette is considered SE.
It might be clean’ish now – wait until school starts.

I mean, the concerns over NW(specifically Chinatown) are legit. I’ve taken my family down there a few times recently to see the Chinese Gardens. The garden is an oasis in a sea of crackhead zombies. That area has always been bad but is worse in recent years.

But NW also includes the whole Pearl area which is totally fine, and the area around Providence Park is also clean and safe.
If you’re too scared to visit the stadium for a football game, that’s pretty soft.
I’ve felt less safe visiting Corvallis on a game day, but continue to do so.

          • Those gardens are definitely worth seeing. The juxtaposition of looking from inside the garden, through the “windows’ in the garden’s walls, out to the crack zone, is sort of other worldly though.

  2. First (you can’t be first if you also start the thread, sorry, thems the rules)

I haven’t bought tix for Portland, but did for the first time ever buy season tickets.

  3. I’m excited about our o-line this year. Always under-appreciated but oh so valuable. I see Brewer going to the NFL.

“– Oregon State offensive lineman Marco Brewer has been named to the watch list for the Outland Trophy… Brewer, a Corvallis, Ore., native, played in 11 games for the Beavers in 2021, making five starts. He was part of an offensive line that paved the way for B.J. Baylor to rush for a Pac-12-best 1,337 yards. That offensive line was also recognized as a finalist for the prestigious Joe Moore Award.”

    “Most productive WRs are returning”

Unfortunately, this is definitely not true. We’re losing our most productive WR from last year by a significant factor(Bradford, 42rec / 631yd), as well as 3 of the top 4 most productive guys (Bradford, Harrison, Flemings, and Beason in that order).

That being said, I think you’d have good reason to project improvement with who’s left and I think the way that we deployed our players last year was highly questionable/stupid. But actual production? It’s mostly gone.

    • In more detail:
I actually like Bradford a lot and think we’ll miss him more than a lot of people seem to realize.

I was pulling my hair out with how many opportunities Flemings and Beason got last year. Flemings is just physically limited and Beason was a total headcase last year…can’t say I’m going to miss either.

Harrison is really good and I’m glad he’s back.
Gould looked awesome whenever he got a snap and it seemed confounding that he didn’t get more chances. He seems poised to shine.
Lindsay is OK but needs to take a big step forward in consistency (and not playing soft).
Hoping that between Dunmore/Tongue/Bolden/Irish that someone is able to step up.

And most of all, hoping that we firm up a better depth chart and don’t play our WR as a constant revolving door every play. Was maddening and I think really hurt Nolan’s ability to build chemistry and the players’ ability to get comfortable with what they were doing.

      • I’m thinking about guys who were consistently more productive with the touches they got, vs guy who produced the most yards.
Like Beason, targeted so many times and dropped balls so many times. May have gotten high yard totals but it took way more reps than it should have.
Gould was much more productive. Lindsay was productive but limited due to injury. Harrison was productive.
Agree that Bradford will be missed

        1

Flemings knew the playbook, and was a good route runner.

The players who should have taken Beason’s snaps were Gould and Irish.

        • Flemings was more priductive than he should have been. His size was a liability though, given he had no shot at blocking downfield effectively against anybody over 150lbs.
Will be good to finally have D1 size across the board in our WR group. Hopefully Dunmore and Tongue have learned routes and how to catch.

        • No downfield blocking ability AND no real contested catch ability. He had to be wide open to compensate for the height and size.

Plus, with Nolan’s accuracy being suspect last year you want a guy with long arms, better able to adjust to errant throws- pretty poor fit overall.

Agree he was a good route runner and not a terrible player but as mentioned, he had very real physical limitations.

  5. OL is going to be ok. Fuaga and Brewer are beasts. They may not be a top 5 unit again, but they should be top 25.

WR will be fine. There’s tons of talent there, Coach K just needs to put the right guys out there.

TE will be fine. There’s lots of talent there.

We need a new RB to step up and be the man.

I don’t see much drop off this year, but it’s hard to see huge improvement in the record unless the defense takes a huge step forward. The offense was pretty dang good already. Unfortunately, I’m not sure Nolan is going to get any better on deep balls. Hopefully he proves me wrong.

4 keys… Nolan, injuries, DL, beat MSU.

I think Nolan will have a great year with 3 seasons under his belt plus his ability to run helps a lot if he can learn to protect the ball. If not, bring on plan B immediately. Smith has to have short fuse on QB play.

Got to stay healthy at key positions… OL, DL, DB, RB… maybe QB too

D line needs to get pressure on opposing QB… minimum 2.5 sacks per game.

Got to beat Montana State… losing sets a bad tone… it’s simply not acceptable period end of story.

I think we’ll hit on 3 of the 4 listed above with biggest doubt on DL. Injuries are impossible to predict. If the stars align and we hit on all 4, this team has Rose Bowl potential. It’s also extremely possible this team is a dumpster fire.

    • Montana st is a good team by all accounts, for a fcs school, but losing to them would be worse than losing to eastern Washington and possibly worse than losing to sac state

  7. Eggers looked at the schedule for September and called it a “land mine”, said the Beavs would be OK if they go 2-2 during that period.
While he said Montana St would not be a gimme, I’m surprised nobody has mentioned Fresno St; are y’all conceding that one?

  8. Does anyone know how badly hurt Fuaga is? We signed two JUCO tackles (Gonzales and Johnson) really late in the process. Not sure if that is a sign that the injury is more severe.

My yearly overly optimistic prediction for OSU football:

Beavs have the best mix of talent, coaching, experience, continuity and confidence outside of Utah. Utah will have pressure, USC will have a lot of pressure to win, but OSU will still be overlooked.

I actually expect a 3-0 start and a win over USC in Lincoln Riley’s first conference game. Beavs have a legitimate shot at 9 wins and an outside shot at 10 or 11.

JS has been building the talent base, explosive athletes in skill positions, Bray will be an upgrade and the defense should thrive with a fully healthy secondary. Nolan ought to have the game slowing down and be much more settled this year. Running back group will surprise.

I expect a loss at Utah and a toss up in Civil War but all other games are winnable based on the above reasoning.

MSU- neutral field, Beav defense tested but offense saves the day for the win
BSU- Avalos has the Broncos running on the fumes of past reputation, Coach Petersen isn’t there anymore and Beavs get early lead and grind a methodical win
Fresno- Tedford is back as the pinch hitting coach, not his team and they miss the fire from last year. Beavs defense gains confidence in a convincing win
USC- Trojans seek revenge and play an emotional early game but it doesn’t provide for lack of team chemistry. Too many me first guys still in that locker room. Beavs hold on for a high scoring win
Utah- Letdown game and similar to the loss at Utah 2 years ago
Stanford- Beavs bounce back with a dominant win over a fading Stanford, Shaw considers NFL options after this loss
WSU- Cougs new qb struggles and Beavs run over WSU defense for a convincing win
Colorado- Redemption from last year as Beavs offense rolls to a big win
Washington- Beavs off a bye week and the defense swarms on the road to win a close one
Cal- Bears can’t move the chains with young qbs but Beavs offense keeps making big play’s downfield in a lopsided win
ASU- Sun Devils are in disarray and leaderless as Beavs running game controls the line of scrimmage for a comfortable win
Oregon- Oregon hopes to play spoiler but Beavs play steady under pressure and the Dline controls UO for a win and rematch with Utah.

11-1 regular season, beat Utah and go to the Rose Bowl

Can they shake the slow starts this year? Some opponents will be too good to come back from a slow start, that is my biggest concern. There were times smith made decisions on offense because they were chasing. We know how that goes with him. He should have more confidence in the defense this year. The team needs to start every game with a confident mindset.

    • 7
      3

11-1 with that resume puts a team in consideration for a playoff spot. But this is nowhere close to a playoff team, haha.

      • It’s more likely this team only wins 2 games vs 11 games. My orange colored glasses says 9 max. I’d say 7 is a reasonable expectation… if they go 2-1 on non conference.

        • 4
          1

Did you notice the disclaimer at the beginning? I know it’s pie in the sky but I’m going to keep hoping for this to be the year every year until September destroys it by week 3…
What if the Beavs could actually have a year of supreme overachieving and all the breaks go their way? I realize those are the circumstances required for another magical year but perhaps JS and crew have all the intangibles, talent, experience and we get to see a true miracle run this year after being so close last year.
As for the “resume”, it isn’t the SEC we are playing each week. This is still the up and down PAC12 filled with new qbs, new coaches and 7:30 pm starts. I think the Beavs are ready for a breakout 2022 season and I stick with 11-1 until it all collapses.:)

Wow I want whatever optimistic hish hash ohiobeav is smokin!

Here’s my predictions and I’ll eat crow but whatevs..

      MSU-L
      BSU-L
      Fres St-L
      USC-L
      Utah-L
      Stanford-L
      WSU-L
      Colorado-W
      UW-L
      Cal-W
      ASU-W
      UO-L

3-9 and welcome to the Mountain West?

  10. BASEBALL:
Anyone know much about Jack Noble, RHP transferring in from the Dirtbags?
9-6, 3.12 with 123 K in 112.2 IP the last two seasons for the Dirtbags making 20 starts in 29 appearances.

  11. Thoughts on the roster and potential.

At QB there are 2 guys with starting experience that have shown they can win at the pac12 level. If Nolan can improve his deep ball and cut back on his turnovers this offense will take a big step. How healthy are Gebbia and Gulbranson. Overall a solid situation here.

RB is 4 deep and should pickup right where Baylor left off.

I think this OL can be really good if they can stay healthy. I think kipper’s move to guard is good as he’s struggled with pass pro. He’s a much more physical specimen than Nous. IMO levengood can be as good as Eldridge. I watched the Colorado game last night and both Nous and Eldridge struggled. Eldridge got dominated a few times.

At TE TQ is a big loss in the run game. Musgrave is a better athlete and I think he’ll breakout this year but he’s not close to the blocker that TQ is. Overman has been good in limited snaps. Who will be the 3rd TE? Will they use Spencer as a 3rd in short yardage?

WR is addition by subtraction imo. Harrison is dangerous with the ball in his hands and we should try to get him the ball in space on screens and such. There are 4 former 4 stars on the roster and it’s time for them to step up.

On the defensive side of things I think Bray will be a big improvement with aggression and lots of different looks not chaining himself to the 3-4.

DL is probably the deepest it’s been since smith has gotten here. I don’t expect them to be great but should be solid against the run and get enough push to help the blitz get to the qb.

At LB it’s looking pretty strong. Fisher has looked really good and is much faster than Roberts was. Mascarenas looks good as well and really hit people on special teams. Biggest question is Chatfield as good as advertised and can he be a difference maker?

Secondary is also probably the deepest since smith has been here. I think wright and Austin will be a very good duo and if Julian is healthy they should be very good.

Special teams should be good and without flemmings they can put someone back there that doesn’t go down by a pat on the shoulder. Hopefully Hayes can be more consistent.

    • There’s an incoming FR LB whose name i can’t remember that could get spot duty, even if in 4 games or less to preserve redshirt. If used near the end if the year to give him some development time, he might turn into an effective, complimentary pass rusher. I think he was Angry’s top rated 2022 commitment.

      • Malaki Donaldson? They’re definitely stacked at OLB and then have a solid 2 deep at ILB.

Probably my biggest concern with this team is at the backup C and T positions.

    • Nolan will benefit from being pushed by competition throughout the season. I would guess he’ll run more because JS knows he actually has depth now and can take a few more risks with his QB (and we know he loves taking risks).

  12. Noticed Jeffrey Manning Jr is still on the Montana State roster this season.
Crazy how long some of these guys have been playing college ball. I think I read Jaydon Grant will be entering his 7th season.
He had 2 separate redshirt Sophomore and 2 separate redshirt Junior seasons. Was class of 2016

  13. Jake Luton had an off night for himself only completing 58% of his passes in the hall of fame game. Thank god Angry is playing chutes and ladders with his in laws or I would not hear the end of this.

    • 2
      2

If he did that vs the 1’s and 2’s on D, then you’d have a legit argument.

Scrugs vs Scrugs = who cares

        • 1
          1

In HS we called them Scrugs.

Or bench warmers if you’d prefer.

Rather than answer the question, you’d rather keep riding Luton’s mangina?

          • So you gave a lot of scrugs in high school?

            Scrug – Urban Dictionary
When a female scratches a male’s balls while simultaneously tugging on his penis. So I was giving my bf a scrug last night and he loved it. … Get the Scrug mug.

I’m guessing the napkins were soaked in bodily fluids more than whiskey back then.

          • Dick post above on my part so I apologize to Whiskey. When I said he completed 58% of his passes I considered that subpar for the NFL, but it sounds like he wasn’t terrible. I thinks he’s playing for his job right now considering few teams keep 3 QB’s anymore.

    • From what I watched he actually looked pretty decent and made some good throws. May have had a better night but there was a costly fumble from one of his receivers and Jacksonville’s D couldn’t really stop the Raiders.

  14. 3
    2

Martinez been getting most the 1st team snaps at rb. Could be a very promising room right there. WR room looks really solid on paper but we need a consistent deep ball to really let these guys shine and open the field up. From what I’ve seen Gulbranson has the best arm strength but hasn’t had the playing time to really make a serious run at Nolan or Gebbia. Seems like combing Nolan and Gebbia together would make a good qb. Squints can’t hit an open receiver more than 10yds away but gebbia can’t throw it far enough despite being more accurate (imo) and has better decision making. Really hope a local optometrist signs Nolan to an NIL deal and gets the kid some contacts. Personally, I’d like to see Gulbranson play but with the game experience of Gebbia and Nolan that’s not an option I think you can seriously consider in a year that they could be somewhat successful.

Excited for the defense. I don’t think they’ll be great with how little time they’ve played under the Bray system but this team was so close to so many wins the last few years that even a mediocre defense would’ve allowed them to win. With how good the offense could be, I don’t even think we need a “good” defense but getting to the middle of the Pac would likely result in 1-2 more wins.

A lot to be excited about, as every year begins with unbridled enthusiasm, but honestly I think some of the same concerns from prior years still hold true. Can D Line improve enough to make a difference? Can Smith and Lindgren get out of their own way on the play calling? 1st quarter, 4th and 20 on our own 25…let’s go for it! We’ve just ran the ball for 40 yds on 3 plays…let’s do 3 deep balls by Nolan or a triple reverse hook’n’ladder. Or completely abandon the run for 3 or 4 series. Sigh. Unfortunately, I don’t see that changing as it’s been a staple for the entire time this staff has been here but we have more talent on the team than in recent history so hopefully that helps overcome these weaknesses. Let’s hope we avoid those major injures and start this season healthy.

    • I don’t get the constant knocks on Nolan. he had the second highest QBR in the conference and was second in yards per attempt. His completion percentage was middling, yes. But QB’s TEND to play better with more experience under their belt, especially in college. I personally think we will all be pleasantly surprised with what we see from Nolan this year. Or maybe I’m wrong, but who cares. People are wrong all the time yet no one ever owns up for it.

      • He couldn’t hit a deep ball to save his life.

If he can’t hit those the defense doesn’t have to back off and respect it.

I’m not anti Nolan. I want the best guy out there to win games. Pretty sure that’s what we’d all like. I don’t care who that is.

        • He hit some passes of decent depth against USC, even w/pressure, but he sure didn’t continue it and build on it. It suggests to me one of his problems is over-thinking it.

I’ll be surprised if he’s markedly better and suspect the play calling will have to account for his weakness.

  15. 12
    5

New thread yet? I prefer Jack ranting to himself. The kid has likely heard and endured everything you think is original and a lot more material that you haven’t thought up yet. I actually admire him for making it to D1 level given the obvious taunting and immature name calling he likely faces wherever he goes. I’d think it would be easier to just be off the radar of public life rather than strive for fame and NFL career because of his name. Give it a rest, move on to actual sports if you don’t mind.

  16. Interesting stat…beavs were 4th in the country facing 9 defenders in the box. A few reasons this is important. 1st, the o line and blocking scheme was/is really good. Still ran the ball extremely well despite teams loading the box. 2nd, this reiterates the lack of downfield accuracy by the QBs, primarily Nolan. We had speed at wr with Gould, Harrison, Irish, etc to get open on deeper routes. Imagine how good this offense could be if defenses had to at least respect the deep pass. Hopefully there’s been growth in this area during off-season.

  17. Most plays run facing at least 9 defenders in box last season (Power 5)

    1. Wisconsin 142
    2. Stanford 140
    3. Utah 131
    4. Oregon St. 129
    5. Minnesota 120
    6. Iowa 118
    7. Baylor 106
    8. Illinois 104
    9. Cal 103
    10. Iowa State 97

    Nolan should have better numbers.

    • Yeah, thanks for posting. Not hating on Nolan just a big weakness of his game last year. I think gebbia is more accurate but he lacked arm strength too. Got to make some progress in this area of the offense.

    • Interesting to compare the stats by qb for those teams:
      1. Iowa St -Purdy: 3,188 yds, 19 tds, 8 ints
      2. OSU- Nolan: 2,677 yds, 19 tds, 10 ints
      3. Cal- Garbers: 2533 yds, 16 tds, 8 ints
      4. Utah- Rising: 2493 yds, 20 tds, 5 ints
      5. Stanford- McKee: 2327 yds, 15 tds, 7 ints
      6. Baylor- Bohanon: 2205 yds, 18 tds, 7 ints
      7. Minnesota- Morgan: 2044 yds, 10 tds, 9 ints
      8. Wisconsin- Mertz: 1958 yds, 10 tdfs, 11 ints
      9. Iowa- Petras: 1880 yds, 10 tds, 9 ints
      10. Illinois- Peters: 1170 yds, 7 tds, 4 ints

By comparison based on the numbers Nolan did pretty well. But we all saw it with our own eyes and he could’ve far exceeded what the final numbers show. Most of those teams are notoriously run heavy and lack the ability to balance the opponent stacking the box. Stacking the box happens less often when qb can recognize the blitz etc early and check into a quick play. They said this is Gebbia’s strength more than throwing downfield against a blitz. We’ll see if it matters either way.

Let’s start a new thread…beating Penix into the ground and cumming to a conclusion is tiresome.

    Off topic: it is tiresome.

  19. 5
    4

In other conference news, it sounds like Brack Huard has been the best QB in Husky camp this weekend, while Penix has looked a little limp.
Hopefully not because of something he read online that has the blood rushing to his head.

  20. Not football related – but anybody ever listen to 620? For some bizarre reason they are re-airing Blazer call-in shows from 30 years ago during drive time. Steve Jones interviewing Mike Dunleavy Sr. about the team, complete with phone numbers with a “KEX” prefix. Really weird.
Canzano – on 750 – was taking about the need for the team to be sold, and will anyone want to outbid Phil Knight? I understand Knight probably low-balled the value on his initial offer, but is there anyone who has more credibility in the region (and the money)? If its someone else, they’ll immediately encounter a disappointed fan base and I can’t believe Allen’s foundation needs any more zeros to fulfill his will. Unless Allen and Knight were sworn enemies and Allen told his sister to not sell to Knight no matter what. If the Blazer’s broadcasting operation is any indication, the franchise is running on autopilot.

  21. nicebeaver, whats the easiest way to get noticed by baseball coaches, friend of friend, he lives in san diego. He’s already visited cal, and he’d like to look at osu

      1

It’s down to him and CJ Beathard. Unless Luton can go practice squad he’s going to have to win the QB2 battle to remain on the roster.

Fortunately he’s got the support of Beaver Nation behind him. Or at least a fraction of it. A lot of Penix heads rooting against him though.

    • I’m not sure what you mean; These are the deadlines for roster cuts in the NFL:
      1) Tuesday, August 16: cut from 90 to 85
      2) Tuesday, August 23: cut from 85 to 80
      3) Tuesday, August 30: cut from 80 to 53

  22. This Lindsey interview is interesting. He’s brutally honest. At least we know why he’s underperformed now. It sounds like he gets it now.

    • Interesting comment about lack of player leadership last year. Probably a side effect of your captain QB not being your starting QB. Will we see that again without a clear cut starter at QB?

        *Breaking News*

Jonathan Smith has announced the team captains for the 2022 football season.
        Everybody’s a captain!
“We have decided there’s no better way to spread the blame when things go wrong than to blame everybody. Coin flips will be interesting this year”

  23. I love this interview. It explains a whole heck of a lot in regards to why the team has struggled in the past. If the TEAM as a whole doesn’t buy in to what the TEAM needs, then the season will be a bust. Thanks for finding this and sharing Angry.

Beav in OH, a leader doesn’t have to be a starter to get guys going during practices. What I took from the interview was no one on the team was taking ownership of being a leader off the field. For example, putting in the extra work by learning the playbook, hitting the weight room(outside the designated workouts), hitting the practice field after practice and/or before practice with your teammates i.e. Gebbia throwing balls to Beason or Lindsey on their own time, keeping yourself in check to make sure you get enough sleep regularly, etc. It was the little things and getting other players to join in and buy in the importance to do these things the moment you step onto campus, not when it’s your last season on campus.

    • NP. I love it, too. The brutal honesty and self-reflection. He’s not cliche like most.

What’s fascinating about it is he’s understanding and being motivated by the pressure of time. I think everyone can relate to that in some way. He thought he had forever to figure it out, and suddenly it’s his last chance…

This kind of mindset can really put a fire under a team. Hopefully he’s talking to everyone and telling them it’s now or never.

  24. MLB notes:
Kwan is above .300 and Adley just hit his 6th home run. Beavs representing well in the majors this year. Cleveland and Baltimore are going to be fighting for a wildcard spot…

    • Man, Sandberg’s interview at the end is making me excited for the season! When he stated everyone on the team talks to one another, the team has a ‘we all make each other better mentality, player lead rooms, etc’ meshes with Tyjon Lindsey and Coach Blue in stating the players set Thier own goals if they want to, otherwise, go out and play football. Play loose and aggressive. I am so excited for this season!

Miiiiitch (The Pat Casey Head Baseball Coach) is now the third highest paid of the PAC’s public schools.
Contract runs through 2029 per Daschell tweet.

    • I think that’s genuinely good news.

Every team Smith has fielded has been way, way better on offense than defense. We’ve had good to very good offenses but the best Smith D has still been pretty terrible. I trust we’ll find a way to be at least competent on O- D is an open question.

Plus, the defense should have a leg up in camp when they know the playbook..

      • Agreed. In years past circa 2000-2010, defense has always been ahead of the offense in fall camp. You want your defense to be more noteworthy than your offense.

          • I wouldn’t say the OL struggled per se. I would say the defense is able to read and react to plays faster than in years past. Our OL looks different this season from last season, but it’s not without veteran players. Last few years, offense has been able to run all over our defense, this fall camp, the offense appears to be “struggling” on short yardage.

I also read the offense had a lot of procedural penalties as well; which caused them to have 3rd and long situations. The offense doesn’t even have a named starter at QB, RB, or WR(x,y,z positions) for that matter. Coach Smith was also on record stating the scrimmage was more to give everyone reps and see who has progressed from day 1 of Fall camp up to the scrimmage. I mean, Isaac Hodgins even played in the scrimmage on defense. So there are guys who are shaking rust off their game and others who are vying for a spot in the #2 slot on the depth chart. There is still this week and next week of Fall camp before they start game planning to play Boise State. Remember last season when Noyer was the named starter against Purdue? Look how that turned out for the offense. Some players are practice players, others are game players. Rare IMO is to have both practice and game players to start the season on Offense anyway. 8-4 at worst, 10-2 at best is my prediction for this team.

          • Good points here. I’m just not that confident in Nolan keeping us from have a couple of losses due to his inability to get the ball down field. He won’t be the only really for those losses but sure would be nice to have the full playbook available on offense.

          • Nolan can throw a 20 yard pass, he showed the ability against USC. What will cause the losses to occur are as follows:

            1) Not tucking the ball in when scrambling
            2) throwing off balance when on a roll out or scrambling
            3) forcing passes into double coverage
            4) throwing over the middle without seeing the LB or FS within running distance to intercept the pass when thrown
            5) not throwing the ball far enough out of bounds(See USC game in first half in the red zone. Throws to the sidelines
short when USC defender clearly was in front of the WR, but Nolan threw the ball to the sideline just enough to
allow the ball to be intercepted.)

I believe Nolan did over throw several deep balls, but it could have been the WR’s letting up since they had no confidence in his accuracy once they got about 25+ yards away from the line of scrimmage. (Need verification on this before it can be stated as fact).

          • I think it fueled the defense more than hurt the offense’s morale. Last season was last season. The team now has the mentality and mindset of “Do better today than I did yesterday/last practice.” Soon, it will be, “Do better this practice than I did the last practice.” What I mean is, fall camp is the time to hone in your drills of hand placement, feet placement, etc. Also, do we know if the defense is running 3-4 exclusively, or are they mixing up 3-4, 4-3, 3-3-5, Nickel, Dime, etc? If they are adding multiple packages, this could also be why the offense appears to be “Struggling”. The different looks by our defense based on run or pass situation could be the reason they aren’t getting the short yardage. Which bodes well for our defense if they are versatile.

I am excited to see how the defense will look this season under Bray’s first full year as DC.

    • Thought the practice report i glanced at said Gulbranson and Montiel took the majority of the snaps, rather than Nolan and Gebbia.
Does that sound accurate? Because i really didnt read much on the scrimmage.
If so, not surprising the offense couldnt produce many results, but also why the f are we scrimmaging the #1 D against the 3rd/4th string QBs?
Maybe this is only referring to the 15 minutes or so that media is allowed to see?

I just saw the beavs win expectancy was 8-4 last year. Nice to see the math support that randomly going for 4ths was a net negative.

    • Coach #1: Who needs a kicker when you can go for it on 4th down?
Coach #2: Yeah but what if we look like bozos and don’t get every first down?
Coach #1: Good point, let’s not try too hard to get a kicker because then we look dumb for not using him.
Coach #2: Best kicker in the country is nearby…How about a preferred walk on offer?
Coach #1: Great idea, then we at least tried to get him and still get to go for it on 4th down.

    • We dont give scholarship to freshman specialists. We seem to prefer gethering walkons and waiting to see which one comes out on top before putting them on scholarahip.
In this case it probably means they know they have no shot at landing the kid, so no need to extend an offer anyway

    • I wouldn’t trust any Kicker ranking, they are more bias than ESPN. Recruiting for specialist is primarily based on paid coaches input. Outside of kicking offs to measure leg strength, the sample size in HS football is too small and snapper and holder is to big of a variable to really judge. We have family friends who son wants to be a kick and the coach in Alabama says they have a 98% college placement. If we true only offer PWO to specialist, I think that’s a good strategy.

It’s sad, OSU is now having to offer a 50% off deal to sell tickets to the Montana State game. And that game had mostly tickets in the $17 to $40 range in the first place.
On the one hand, I’m glad they’re finally trying to sell tickets, but they really shouldnt have to try this hard to sell out a stadium of 25k people that was already lower priced than typical Reser games.
Makes me wonder if the majority of OSU fans at Reser are really just students with free tix?

    • Just talked to a long time season ticket holder this last weekend. He had to be told by a buddy about tickets for this game. No email from athletics. He lives in the Portland area and had no idea there was going to be a beaver game there. Many factors but yeah it’s sad.

      • Communication is so poor.
They keep telling fans to call the Beaver ticket office for more info, but I keep hearing from people who say the tickets office either has a message that says theyre closed, or they tell people to call the Timbers/Prividence ticket office.

      • He definitely missed the couple of emails that I got and the notice when I renewed season tickets. Maybe he’s not the name on the account.

I believe osu said students would get the same allocation of tickets per game as last year.

    • If I still lived in Portland (or Oregon for that matter) I would’ve loved a Beavs game there. No I-5 traffic, Uber home, etc. Too bad. Looking forward to going to the game vs ASU in Tempe though. Thankfully it’s in Nov.

  30. I didn’t realize camp had started. Too much fun in the sun. I’m a little behind now.

Baseball off-season probably couldn’t have gone any better. Other than Frisch, no real unexpected losses. Great that Dukart, Fuchs and Gretler moved on. Opens up a lot of playing time for the young guys. Recruiting should pickup with that many guys getting drafted.

Turley coming is huge. Top 20 high school player who should be a starter on day one. Fall ball should be fun to watch, lots of competition. Only losing Gough to the draft is a win. If Reed is healthy, that’s an outfield with lots of potential.

Team is looking solid next year. Ferrer and Brown should compete for starting roles. Forrester can be an all american. A tournament team with potential to go further if incoming freshman can make an impact.

  31. 2

Beavs have 6th best conference champ odds and 3rd best in the North with UW and Nike ahead of us. North will be up for grabs again this year for sure. I’ve seen a few media takes that Nike is one of the most overrated teams in the preseason poll.

    • For one, there is no more North and South with the pac-12 going to best winning percentage for the pac-12 championship game.

With that said, I honestly believe the Beavs will go 3-0 to start the season. If they go 2-1 in non conference, they will most likely lose to Fresno State. This team has to get past losing on the road. If they can’t get over the road game losses, then we lose at Fresno State, Utah, Stanford, and ASU. And go 8-4. I don’t see this team losing a game in Reser for the second straight season.

  32. It’s seems like it’s been a fairly quiet camp. That seems like a good thing this year. Depth is the theme to me but the team needs intense competition to bring out the best. Need to be in killer/hunter mode in game one.

QB – Nolan seems to be the guy. His home/away splits last year were very different. Good QB at home, not a good QB on the road except for the USC game. Good season if he can improve his road issues and the coaches play into his strengths more. Or maybe start Gebbia on the road. Doesn’t appear to be a huge dropoff between Nolan and Gebbia.

RB – Looks to be a by committee approach. If Fenwick is healthy he’ll get the nod early. Lowe keeps his scatback role. Martinez and Newell will get carries early on too before they settle on a main back.

TE – Musgrave is all potential. He flashed it for one game last year. We’ll see if he’s got more. All other TEs just need to block.

OL – solid veteran group. Like Kipper inside, he’s a mauler there. Beef on the right side. Kipper and Fuaga at 320+.

WR – need someone to step up and be a #1 guy. On paper, this group has the most talent.

DL – veteran group but how will they be utilized?

LB – depth going two or three deep. Bray needs to find a good rotation. Chatfield makes or breaks this unit. Seems like he’d be a difference maker.

DB – need to be playmakers on the back end. But their success is really dependent on the pass rush. Does having another coach help?

Special teams – Hayes missed three from 30-40, need to clean that up. Inside 40 should be near automatic. Loecher can be a weapon to flip field position this year.

Coaches – I think this is the last year for Lindgren no matter what. Offenses become stale when ocs stay for too long. He’s due to be a head coach somewhere.

  33. Wilner’s story on tomorrows meeting of the UC regents and their discussion of the UCLA departure has a couple spicy tidbits.
Didja know the Bruins “reportedly will receive $67.5 million in a settlement with Under Armour, their former apparel partner.” or that, “Rutgers, which joined the Big Ten a decade ago, allocates $500,000 more annually to its football staff than does UCLA”?

And if anyone cares about student/athletes, “countless studies have connected extensive air travel to sleep deprivation and diminished cognitive function.” Bruin air travel will go up by 150% or so, with time on the road doubling.

  34. What would this look like then if the Pac-12 and the ACC were to have an Alliance with the new Media contract? An Alliance would mean teams play each other. If the ACC and Pac-12 came together that would be 24 teams(10 from the Pac-10 and 14 from the ACC).

Football buzz seems to be at an all-time preseason low on AB. Is the site just slowing down or has everyone’s enthusiasm for football just been zapped by years of mediocrity and the sport’s impending collapse?

    • No buzz?……wait till wannabeav and angry start discussing Scratch Ticket Smith’s fourth down philosophy!
Seriously, there’s a (welcome to some) lack of controversy over QB (Nolan taking 95% of practice snaps) and no injuries to headliners. Coaching staff stable too.
Not a lot to argue about and any hopes for the season are kept by fans to themselves-been let down too many times.
Things will perk up September 3rd.

    • I looked into the away schedule and broke down the last times the Beavs won on the road at each team. So, which teams are in down years this season?

True Road games we last won and the opponents end of season records in (_):

      Fresno State – none 0-6 – played in 2001(11-3) and in 2003(9-5)
      Utah – 2013 (5-7)
      Stanford – 2002(2-9), 2004(4-7), 2006(1-11)
      UW – 2004(1-10), 2005(2-9), 2006(5-7), 2008(0-12)
      ASU – 1969, 2009(4-8)

    • In the past there were guys that would attend practice and give reports. I don’t know if practices are closed now, but there’s not much to read about practice. The O and GT are either subscription now or just boring reads. So, imo not much to see or read, so not much discussion at AB.

        • That’s honestly something I miss about Riley. I’m skeptical whether closed practices is really any kind of advantage, but it sure does suppress excitement and engagement from the fanbase. I really miss the days of daily and meaningful practice reports- made fall camp an exciting time.

          • 1
            2

I like the closed practices with only media allowed for certain portions of practice. I can understand spring and spring game being open to the public, but during fall camp and throughout the season, I appreciate closed practices. Protects the players from fan scrutiny early on in the season. Riley teams always had “slow starts” in September. I wouldn’t say last season was a “slow start” in September, but the Purdue game was a slow to replace the starting QB.

  36. Transfer Golden already getting time w/1s on D:

“Golden, so new to OSU’s program that he doesn’t even have a picture or bio on the school’s football website, has quickly got into the mix. Golden, who transferred from Northern Colorado to Oregon State in June, played with the No. 1 defense during the opening series of Saturday’s scrimmage. Smith likes his size (6-6, 270) and range.

“He plays with effort and can be physical so he’s earned his way to be in that rotation,” Smith said.”

Hope that says more about his strengths than the D line’s weakness. Maybe he’ll turn into a very good find?

  37. up top, OOB has a link to a Wilner column about UCLA’s incipient departure from the conference including a comment about the effects of travel. Today’s WSJ has a whole article on this theme titled: “The Nightmare Travel Days Ahead.”

Here are the most salient paragraphs:

“The Los Angeles schools, located in the southwest corner of the Pac-12 conference, currently do not travel farther than about 1,100 miles and one time zone to play league opponents. When UCLA and USC join the Big Ten, however, the closest school, Nebraska, is located 1,500 miles and two time zones away. That’s to say nothing of Rutgers and Maryland, whose campuses are three time zones away and about 2,700 miles east. Even with the most creative scheduling models, which UCLA and USC say they are exploring, there is no way around the reality that Trojans and Bruins athletes are about to be spending a lot more time on the road. It comes with major consequences for athletes–both in the classroom and on the field.”

“There is evidence that long travel days spanning time zones have an adverse impact on physiological performance. In a survey conducted of Division I football and hockey players by Bowling Green State University sport management professor Amand Paule-Koba, most college athletes reported struggling with jet lag and ‘bus legs’ after long trips. From a performance, and just as a human standpoint, there really needs to be someone looking at this and saying, ‘Is this in the athletes’ best interest?'” Paule-Koba said. Especially if you have UCLA and USC flying across the country repeatedly.”

Another observer commented–“I just hope a lot of these kids understand what they’re getting into.”

  38. People who look at USC and UCLA’s move as a “boon” to the schools are kidding themselves. It isn’t the sign of a “healthy sport” when schools are faced with a choice of falling further behind other schools with TV money or sacrificing a chunk of their players’ athletic and academic performances and potential. And lets be clear – it isn’t like there are suddenly 10 percent or 15 percent more college football fans justifiying the economics of this. These schools are having to “dance faster to keep the music playing.”

This article by Gazette Times proves my point about Chance Nolan unable to really “Throw the ball into the stands” when throwing the ball away. He throws it to the sidelines in the area of the receiver and it turns into an interception. Between Nolan’s arm strength(or lack there of), and Lindgren/Smith’s desire to go for it on 4th down and “manageable”, this makes it a -2 win effect. I would start Nolan and have a very short leash. 3 and out, near interceptions, fumble, etc. pull him and put Gebbia in the game immediately. He has the same problems, then put Gulbranson in the game. Find a QB that will win the game that day. Next man up.

    • I don’t think that approach has worked anywhere that didn’t have multiple 5-stars on the roster.

To me, it comes down to how good you think your running game is going to be. If it’s like last year, Nolan is fine because he’s an elite game manager and will limit negative plays. If you can’t run the ball as well, you’re going to need to pick up more yards downfield and it’s worth the risk of having a guy that can do that more, but will also make more mistakes here and there.

Either way, the QB situation will be interesting. The staff made a bad choice last year going with Noyer out of the gate because Nolan didn’t do well in the fall. Do they now make their decision based on Nolan’s body of work from last year, or pin the competition on what happens this fall?

      • I equate a QB like a pitcher in baseball. If they aren’t throwing strikes and are missing their targets/spots at the plate after about 20-30 pitches, you pull the pitcher and go to the next pitcher depending upon how your bullpen looks. With football, you can sub players in and out throughout the game. Rhythm, feel, timing, and cohesiveness with the WR/TE/RB is very important in regards to the pass game. If Nolan is over throwing, under throwing throw aways, and the team becomes 1 dimensional where we have to beat teams with our QB’s arm, then go with the guy who can stretch the defense.

I also read Kipper said(paraphrasing), “Just because we were a running team last year, doesn’t mean we will be a running team this season.” Could be the offense is focusing more on the passing game in camp and limiting the runs to protect our RB room a bit more since they know the running game is there. The more passes you throw, the more likely you will have INT. e.g. Derek Anderson, Moore, Canfield, etc. I am not saying pull the QB on first INT, fumble, bad throw, etc. I am saying if they are not playing to their average and they are having an off day, for the betterment of the team, put in a QB who can make it happen. What if they had pulled Noyer in the 2nd quarter instead of at the beginning of the 4th against Purdue last year? That’s my point.

    • I’m not so sure about the short leash. He was able to engineer a comeback against Utah, and that was pretty impressive.

I agree that Nolan doesn’t have a strong arm, and the team needs a QB who can throw missiles 60 yards downfield to the undersized speedy receivers. Everything else (short/medium passing game, inside/outside run game, audibles) is there.

      • I’m not sold on Nolan. I am very curious how Gulbranson would do in a game situation. We’ve seen Gebbia and he’s not as mobile as Nolan, but can throw a better ball. Gulbranson seems like he has the ability to throw a deep ball, but how is his accuracy on those throws?

The goal for this team is to play/win the Pac-12 Championship. In order for that to happen, Lindgren better hope they game plan short passing routes and Coach M has the offensive line dialed in for the run game like they did last year.

Wait till the Pac12 makes their deal with ESPN and all future Beaver games are pushed down to ESPN+.

I didnt have many problems streaming the Pac12 network. Helps that I have a comcast account to log in through.
ESPN plus has been garbage though.

Probably moot, not that the Big10 has announced they plan to continue expandong and the thought is they will gobble up more West coast Pac12 schools to give USC/UCLA some closer travel destinations for games.
Oregon State and WSU are going to have to stream their weekly head to head matchups via some intern’s TikTok account

          • I seem to remember having to watch a wbb game via facebook once… nothing could be worse than that…except…

Possibly a tie with ESPN assortment of channels and their constant moving of games while games are in progress equally terrible.

      • I want to be able to watch OSU this year but the choices for doing so just don’t work for me. Man I wish the Pac-12 network had a subscription service direct and not through highway robbery outlets.

  40. Some of the major developments under Smith last year were an undefeated home season, and overdue wins against UW, Utah, and Stanford and ending a jurassic losing streak at USC. Given that set up, the losses to CU and Cal were maddening, and the flat performance in the bowl game was disappointing.

This year, road wins are necessary for improvement, as are not playing down to the competition. I hope the Beavers don’t show up flat in the non-conference games like they did the bowl game. I think the non-con games should focus on getting that O-Line on the same page and into form – if they can be as good as last year’s the rest can follow because the D will be improved and the RBs are there. For some reason, I don’t trust Nolan to develop a deep pass, nor the coaches to optimize a WR group and rotation.

Lastly, Smith needs to end the stupid play calling, there’s two games right there. And get a CW win. Time for that to become a rubber match again.

I think 8-9 wins is the top end given the schedule:

    https://osubeavers.com/sports/football/schedule/2022

    • I think the bowl game was a letdown from the collapse of the late season North title hopes. That whole game was such an anomaly in so many areas, that’s my only explanation for it.

It’s important that this team learned how to win last year. They know what being a favorite feels like and they know what it takes to win the games they should win (and what it feels like to lose them!)

Agreed on building on the OL and defense. I don’t expect the OL to be quite as good as last year, but if they are, all it will take is an improved defense and adequate passing game and we should be very much in the PAC-12 hunt.

Depending on how other games shake out, the USC game in Corvallis 9/24 could be a ranked vs. ranked game with national hype.

    • Interesting opinion on Smith’s play calling. He’s regarded as a very good offensive coach… do you remember John Garrett, Kevin McGiven? Just like at home, appreciate what you have. Grass isn’t always greener.

      • McGiven was known as, McGiven ’em the ball back OC. He was the GA era. John Garrett was the OC for MR’s last season in 2014. Garrett is now the Director of Scouting at Florida State. That explains a lot. “I hired the wrong F***ing guys!”

      • I was referring primarily to his fourth down gambling given context like field position and score. Overall, I really like this offense and with the right QB it could really hum.

      • Smith doesn’t call the plays – Lindgren does. The always go-for-it-on-4th down stuff is entirely on Smith though, as he gets the final say.

  41. Media hype heating up over UC Board of Regents blocking UCLA’s move to the Big 10. I still think this is just someone within the UC system angling to get more money thrown their way, but we’ll see what happens.

The previously discussed exit payment to Cal seems like a reasonable endgame.

  42. Per ESPN:

According to the final preseason SP+ ratings I will release Sunday, there are 19 teams with at least seven games projected to finish within one score (~7.5 points) and seven teams with eight such games. These are chaos teams of a different sort. You will want to be watching at least the fourth quarter of many of their games this year.

    • 8 tight games: Arkansas, Baylor, Kansas State, Northern Illinois, Oregon State, TCU, Western Michigan

      1

Meanwhile, Kyle Bonagura and Paolo Uggetti’s article about the Pac-12 and who to watch for this season listed Oregon State as a “quiet sleeper” in the only sentence in the whole article about Oregon State. The team is on literally on the precipice of being middle of the Pac like last year, to getting over the proverbial hump of getting 9+ wins and competing for the Pac-12 Title. This is honestly why there was a quip about Coach Smith saying, “This could be a magical season.” and multiple players like Tyjon Lindsey bring up playing in and some saying winning the Pac-12 Championship. Could this be THE year, the Beavers get to the Grand Daddy of them all, The Rose Bowl? If they do go to the Rose Bowl, you better believe I’m getting on a plane and going to that game when it does happen.

Luck o the Beavs, they sweep the non conference and also finish the season atop the Pac12 north, but 2 south teams(USC and Utah) end up with a better conference record despite losing some non con games and get into the conf championship game/Rose Bowl

        • is it overall win% or the conference win% that determines the Pac-12 Championship game?

Also, is there a CBS AB’s college pick ’em this year? I would like to participate this season if that’s still happening.

  43. No word yet on FB Horton? Kid was recruited as a FB, and this will be his third year in the system. Obviously has to wait behind Colleto, but he ought to have the system down and be in shape after a couple of seasons of the training table and weight room. Maybe he’ll get some time in non-con if there’s a blowout victory.

Given the depth at LB, I expect Colleto will get more diverse looks in the offense, and maybe to help out the blocking with a developing O-line.

    • I dunno, you could be right about Colletto. Noticed a report that he fumbled once in practice mid-week.
He certainly has the mentality and physical ability to be a good blocker, question for me is “will he throw a few passes” (at FB receivers, not MILF’s!).

Clarification there= an attempt to stay ahead of angry and BG

Lindgren is pretty creative. I’m sure with the closed practices they’ve been cooking up some fun stuff and we’ll have an interesting surprise or two in the Fresno game.

    • Horton is still a RS Freshman, but only weighs 225. Way too small for a FB

I’m thinking Overman takes most of the snaps at FB this year

    • I’m starting to see articles pop up saying Adley is already the best catcher in baseball, also a lot of Buster Posey comparisons. I’ll think he will match or exceed the hype. Kwan turned on what looked like an unhittable inside pitch for a triple yesterday that helped the Guardians come from behind. I’m glad Madrigal is healthy and getting the starts.

I rewatched the OSU @ Utah OT win from 2013. Our defense that game in the second half resembled last years defense. The adjustment by Utah in the second half on offense was run speed option out of shotgun and have the QB Travis Wilson keep the ball. Defense couldn’t stop it. Then Utah dialed up more blitzes and stuff the middle since the only runs to the outside by OSU were jet sweeps. The one tangible that I noticed was how good Mannion really was/is at the QB position. His deep balls to Cooks were tear dropped in over the shoulder in stride and caught by Cooks. If the beavs this season had the QB to connect on the deep ball, and have a QB run threat, the hype would be insane.

Another thought, most college teams try to find “their QB” and build their class around it. I would say Oregon State first worked on groups they wanted improvement on and are working on finding “their guy” once the OL, TE, WR, RB group is established. I honestly feel Aiden Chiles will be that QB to launch us to the next level. Think Rising for Utah or Kellen Moore with Boise State. We have Gulbranson, Throckmorton who are Smith recruits and now we have a 3rd QB in contention. How many times have we heard Riley sa, but not do? Get a QB in every recruiting class. Smith has been able to do that thus far.

      • Definitely has been getting QBs but I don’t think any of them have been the “1st” choice. Would like to see them hit on their 1st choice soon. I like what I’ve seen about chiles so far for sure. Interesting to see how this season goes for him and to stay healthy.

        • That’s my point though. They have their pecking order of who they want, but based on the recruiting classes, they pursue and keep relationships going with guys that want to play football and are wanting to go somewhere more “remote”, where the coaching staff is stable, or perhaps want to go somewhere they can relate to the coaches where it feels comfortable.

It starts with OL, TE, WR, and RB. Oregon State is known for their Running backs consistently. OL has been hit and miss, but more hit the past few seasons. If you can get big tough TE’s, then you can open your run game as well as your passing game so long as the TE’s can catch the ball.

I was never recruited out of HS, but I’ve had friends and family who were recruited by smaller colleges like George Fox, Carroll College in Montana, etc. Look at academics amd see if they have your major. They do, then look at the coaching staff(stability, reputation, likability, etc). Then you look at if you can succeed on the field with who they have on their current roster and recruiting class. I don’t look at stars so much as game film. I am excited for Gulbranson, Throckmorton, and soon Aidan Chiles since those QB’s have the ability to scramble and throw deep balls. Just need more experience and time with the offensive playbook. I would not be surprised to see the coaching staff get “their #1 guy” at QB in the next 2 recruting classes.

Real talk: Should we really be expecting much out of OSU football this year? I realize it’s a much better product than
Andersen’s teams. But in all reality, it feels like a lot of hopes and dreams about to be crushed by having a mediocre qb and head coach.
Maybe just line up Colleto as a starter and just go 3 yards and a cloud of dust. I’d actually love watching that.

Avereage qb? He had the 2nd qbr in the league. Average coach? We’ve improved every year since being here why should this year be different? Not to mention he called the plays for a team that went to the CFP with an average about.

      • Well, not dogging on the guy but let’s be real, once the pac12 hit he was avg. Awesome in USC game, good vs Stanford and Utah. Had some real bad games though, especially Washington and Washington state. He threw for under 200 yds and had 3 picks just in 2 games combined. If he could develop a deep and mid-range passing game, he could be really good and propel this offense and team to a new level. There’s a reason that the beavs were 4th in the country facing a 9 man defense box.

        • Saw an article where Nolan talked about his goal of playing in the NFL. Not dogging him either, but that seems unrealistic even if he does have 2-3 years to play and develop.

        • Weren’t both those games where Beason tipped the balls up and and they got picked? And the pass blocking was horrendous in both as well and Washington’s pass D was 1 of the best in the nation. His mid range game is too I think people just say that because of his terrible deep ball. I don’t think he’s great but if he continues to grow from where he started the year before to last year he could be pretty good.

          • Yeah, Beason had a drop but the wr also bail out the qb with catches on bad throws so can’t really play that game IMO. He’s got potential for sure but my point is that rating was largely earned early on but game stats would show he’s very average thru the pac12 schedule. He’ll be qb1 to start the season so hopefully he’s made progress this off-season.

  45. Basketball team won handily in Italy. Sounds like the newcomers were all over the box score with Glenn Taylor being the focal point. I have liked what I have heard from all the new players. More of a blue collar attitude. Sounds like they have more consistent shooters as well.

There was some commentary up above about ESPN. The Wall Street Journal had a major story in today’s paper titled “ESPN Faces Questions About Its Future.” The principal context is that its “subscriber base is eroding,” this in the face of so-called cable-cutters and the market shift to streaming services. Nonetheless, only Fox News attracts more prime time viewers, according to Nielsen.

The key paragraph in the story, it seems to me, is this one: “Pat Crakes, a sports-media consultant and former Fox Sports executive, said Disney needs ESPN and other cable assets to fund its streaming business’s losses. The company’s TV networks generated $2.5 billion in operating income during the most recent quarter, more than its thriving parks division, which brought in $2.2 billion Meanwhile, Disney’s streaming services–which includes Disney+, Hulu and ESPN–lost $1.1 billion.”

It seems to me that ESPN’s flame out in the Big-10 negotiations is the probable life-line for the preservation of the Pac-10 conference. (can we start calling it that again?) What is the network going to show in the early evenings in the East (last afternoons in the West) after their 3:30 East/12:30 Pacific SEC game of the week? Sure they could run a host of SEC doubleheaders once that new contract starts, but even those games, starting at 8 East (with actual kickoffs at 7 Central) will be over in the early evening here. They have two networks to feet at night (the main channel plus ESPN2 and ESPNU), so expect to see a lot of Pac-12 after dark.

  47. A pass dropped that ends in a int is way more detrimental than a receiver making a good catch is beneficial. We shall see. In the post scrimmage interview Smith didn’t make Nolan a starter either.

    • He said they need to watch game film before they can assess the scrimmage to solidify starters, but he alluded to Chance getting the most reps with the No 1’s. They still have 2 fall camp practices tomorrow and Tuesday. They will be off Wed and Thurs. then have practices to start preparing for Boise State on Friday and Saturday. Monday Aug 29 will be a night practice.

  48. Link to join the Beavrecruiting pickem on CBS.
There are no games to pick yet, so you can only set up your acct at this time.
I’m thinking about tweaking the rules slightly. They have an option to put higher and lower weights on certain games which might make it a little easier to make up ground if you have a bad couple of weeks.
Thinking 12 games each week. Pac games first, and then filler games to get us to 12.
Only games with point spreads are allowed, so OSU vs MtState wont make the cut in week 3.

(Ignore this link, use the college one below)

    http://beavrecruiting2022.football.cbssports.com/e/302fb44a6f1909a838e2e7dd2dd5b831b4b31096f507517a3087d8968a32794b

    • So Frosty the Cornman didn’t sell him on his comment about all his O linemen puking 15 to 20 times at practice? How could a kid turn down a sales pitch like that!

      • I’m starting to think there may be an opportunity out here in Nebraska to try and find the under the radar kids who are stuck on losing teams, even if they have the talent. This OL does chip, he explodes off the ball, but my main beef with this highlight reel is 90%+ is either pancake blocks or him falling to the ground. Not once does he look to block a LB or see the blitzes coming. He’s hyper focused on the guy in front of him. Also, seems like he hasn’t taken the opportunities early in HS to go to camps or get his name out there. He has the size of an IOL if not Center. I have the knowledge of OL, but lacked the size to play beyond HS.

  49. Well damn, I got Covid. I was at the doctor’s office on Thurday and some asshole walked by and coughed like right on me. What a fucker. It has to be from that asshole.

    • My wife, kids and me got covid back in July the day before we were supposed to fly back home from visiting family in Oregon. I was pissed, but my manager was cool about the situation and luckily we were in an airbnb already and it was available for the days we needed to isolate and recover. Took 5 days to be able to fly home and two weeks later I got my smell and taste back.

      Hang in there.

    • You made it pretty long without getting it. I still havent had a positive test and neither have my wife/kids, but there’s no way we’ve never gotten it.

        • I’m on day 6 since I first tested positive. I had mild symptoms a couple days before that. 3 days where I felt pretty awful; mostly like I’d been hit by a bus. No real respiratory issues or fever. Lost taste for a day or so. Still isolating in my home office and WFO. Don’t want to get my wife or kids sick although I should be able soon to interact while wearing a mask.

  50. Nick Daschel has his 2 deep, based on observing all but a few practices.
Who is Cooper, the starting Nickel? Never heard of him, haha
Defense looks pretty solid, especially when Julian is back at full speed. Except we still dont really have a nose tackle other than Sio on 2nd team. Looks like we’re relying more on mobility than big bodies to clog lanes.

    https://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/2022/08/oregon-states-projected-2022-football-depth-chart-for-final-days-of-preseason-camp.html

    • Mobility worked well when we had the Presidents in 2000 DeLawrence Grant and LaDarius Jackson. That defensive line was quick/fast with Dwan Edwards on the inside. Quickness will help against mobile QB’s.

    • Tyjon Lindsey as second team is interesting. seems like the Nick Daschel is projecting the 2020-2022 recruits are finally vying for playing time.

    • My guess is Grant moves to NB when Julian is healthy. No way they keep him off the field. With Oladapo and Julian, we have one of the best S combos in the conference. It’s been a while since we could say that!

      Other surprises:
-Gebbia not QB2. I wonder if this is a lingering injury issue? If not, he’s going to transfer for sure.
-Bolden as a starter? He didn’t do much last year and I haven’t seen him mentioned much.
-OL depth is a concern. Surprising given how many highly rated recruits we’ve had there the last few years. Where’s Jason White?

      • -Agree with Grant moving to nickel.
        – There are player coach meetings Wed Thurs to discuss roles. Expect a lot of players to hit the portal shortly after.
-Bolden was a true freshman last year so I didn’t expect too much from him. Not sure if they were able to red shirt him. There has been a lot of hype about him in camp. There is a lot of speed with that starting receiving core including Musgrave.
        – A lot of those 2nd team guys are undersized I feel like Especially Miller.

I’m not so sure how close the media has been with their starters aside from the gimmes. Surprised that Lolohea wouldn’t be on the 2 deep. His 2nd team DL is much bigger than the first. If the DL can play well I really like the rest of the starting line-up. I feel like Bray’s scheme will play better to the DL strengths as well as the other players.

        Who is Jack Kane?

        • Kane was a PWO from one of the bigger Cali HS programs…can’t remember which one.

Agreed on Lolohea. He was really good last year in rotation duty and should definitely play a bigger role this year. Is he injured?

    • Also important to remember we’ll likely be playing more 4-3, so Sio and Shippen should see the field more (as long as they’re in shape!)

Last month, Action Network reported the Big Ten would expand beyond 16 schools and was targeting Notre Dame, along with Oregon, Washington, Stanford and Cal from the Pac-12.

Those plans have not changed, sources said last week.

Regardless of whether Notre Dame joins the Big Ten or remains independent, the league still wants to add more Pac-12 schools to help reduce potential travel concerns for USC and UCLA, sources said.

If Oregon and others from the Pac-12 leave for the Big Ten, the Big 12 has targeted Arizona, Utah, Colorado and Arizona State as potential members, sources said.

While all this is ongoing, the Pac-12 is trying to acquire its new media rights deal, starting in 2024.

    https://www.actionnetwork.com/ncaaf/oregon-big-ten-preliminary-expansion-discussions?utm_source=Twitter&utm_medium=Social&utm_campaign=BrettMcMurphy

Enjoy these last 2 seasons of Pac-12 football folks. I fully expect OSU to be in the Mountain West to start 2024.

    • If Big Ten takes those 4 Pac-12 teams, they will end up with 20 or 21 if they get Notre Dame in their conference. Big 12 takes 4 remaining Pac-12 out of 6, they will have 16 teams vs 18 if they take Oregon State and Washington State. The SEC then will have 18 teams and the ACC will have 14 teams or 15 if they get Notre Dame. So I honestly see Oregon State and Washington State if Big Ten gets what they want. I personally think the UC Regents is stalling to get CAL reviewed by the Big Ten so then that announcement can be made all at the same time and the UC of regents won’t have to make a ruling that contradicts by-laws.

OSU and WSU to the Big 12 will compete with Big Ten west coast teams and have the mountain, desert, midwest/south Central teams. Baseball and basketball would be competitive along with football. I will blame OSU president and Barnes if the Beavs get left out in the cold with realignment. Who knows, maybe Oregon state doesn’t want distractions and we end up being a package deal with Oregon?

      • Seriously? This is all $ driven. Oregon State provides nothing to the B1G, SEC or Big 12 if they even survive this realignment BS.

You can dream but it doesn’t change reality.

        • Oregon State is very similar to Iowa State in academics and athletics.

Iowa state doesn’t have the following men’s sports, but Oregon State does:

          Baseball, Rowing, soccer

Oregon State doesn’t have these men’s sports, but Iowa State does:

          Track & field, Cross Country

Women’s sports Iowa State has, but Oregon State doesn’t:

          Swimming & Diving, Tennis

Oregon State women’s sports that Iowa State doesn’t have:

          Rowing

So, Oregon State does fit the Big 12 mold. Does Washington State though?

  53. I see the Vegas point spread has gone from OSU -3.5 to -2.5 vs BSU.
Will it matter? Can Bray’s squad pull out a 2 safety win?

I watched the Manti Te’o documentary on Netflix tonight. That dude got royally screwed. Society is pure evil with the memes and shit. He should have sued that ego-maniacal tranny, too. Clear financial damages. Anyway, worth a watch, though you will probably be very frustrated with the tranny.

    • Is it worth the watch?
I need to catch up on the last few episodes of Better Call Saul but need a distraction between episodes.

Been watching The Offer on Paramount. It’s loosely based on the events and people around the making of the original Godfather movie. So far it’s been entertaining.

Also watched a Pearl Harbor doc series on netflix that was pretty informative and well made

        • That thing looks great! Nice work by the team that restored it.
Were the PT Boats the ones that fired back at those mini subs prior to the attack?

          • Come see us, we are there most Mondays and Thursdays, info on the website.
Not sure about mini subs, PT’s fired at first wave of aircraft for sure.

          • I do.
Job security, we’ll never be completely finished. Spend most of my time keeping Packard V-12’s running, amazing pieces of engineering. We’ll be hauling out the boat for hull maintenance in a few weeks. Boat and small museum open year round.

          • That is so awesome. Do they pay you or is it volunteer work? When I worked for the Park Service in NYC I’d get sent to Floyd Bennet Field occasionally, and I’d always talk with the guys restoring aircraft there. The hanger was amazing and so were the people restoring the aircraft. They’d invite us in and show us all the work they did. They were volunteers. Check out their site. It’s a really cool thing to visit if you’re ever in the area.
            https://www.facebook.com/HistoricAircraftRestorationProjectHarp/

I’m planning a bike trip to the PNW next Spring. Maybe I’ll stop in.

          • Surely there must be homeless people living in it or using it for their toilet if it’s in Portland.
How many times have you had to replace it’s catalytic converter? ;)

      • Yeah, I think it’s worth the watch. I’m not really into stuff like this and found it interesting, though a lot of the intrigue is recreational outrage, so go in knowing you’ll be mad. I never knew how little he had to do with the entire thing and just how badly that event destroyed his career (he wound up having paralyzing anxiety, etc).

      12

Consider me triggered, but why use the “tranny” slur, dude? I haven’t watched the documentary, but if the “bad guy” in the film is transgender, what does that have to do with them being a presumably manipulative, exploitive POS?

      • 10
        2

I’m 100% against the trans movement, and this after Trump/(R) are so bad he/they moved me off the moderate perch and slightly Left. These are men. They’re playing female sports, injuring actual females, and getting access to female locker rooms. If they continue to play sports it will result in deaths, as it has come close several times already. There is no way I’m going to call them transgender and legitimize that. The tranny in this Netflix was no different. It was all about them with complete indifference for the damage they caused. I’m 100% for pouring public funds into getting them therapy.

I’m mostly against male trannies, if that helps. Female trannies are much less damaging to society. Why are you for all of this? I get “live and let live”, but they are treading all over others lives, injuring people, getting into female locker rooms, etc.

          • 4

What is ridiculous. Use Google, man.

            https://denvergazette.com/news/nation-world/watch-transgender-rugby-player-slams-female-athletes-coach-says-three-injured/article_abab2f3b-91b2-5fce-82d3-b2cfa64c8162.html

            https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/weekly-standard/transgender-athletes-are-challenging-the-definitions-of-sports

etc etc. There are hundreds of cases like this. There are also hundreds of cases of them being perverts in locker rooms.

Let’s hear your argument how male trannies punching women in the face is legit. Sadly, someone is going to have to die before there’s a huge backlash against this, though the backlash is growing even in “progressive” circles as they see the danger.

These people should have their own leagues and their own locker rooms, bathrooms, etc. That would solve most of this and make me not care either way about them.

          • 5
            1

I don’t get how “progressives” can support this stuff and simultaneously say they support women’s rights and female empowerment.

If gender is purely a matter of choice, then it ceases to have any significance. That then flies in the face of over a century of progress in women’s rights and female empowerment. “Trans women” don’t have the same experience as women, nor do they face the same challenges. The institutions we’ve established specifically for women don’t make sense for trans women.

          • 1
            1

I like to keep this stuff simple. Like instead of handing women jobs because they’re women, just hand the job to the best person, and if they are a woman, then great. My issue with the women’s rights movement is they don’t want equal treatment in the things that suck that men do. Men get treated worse in a lot of professions and a lot of social outcomes (e.g. child custody, etc), and they don’t care about it nor do they want equal rights. For me, the tranny problem would be solved if we give these people their own sports leagues, their own bathrooms, their own locker rooms. Let them compete against one another instead of against females. It’s very simple. I don’t care about all the gender stuff. People can add or subtract dicks and cunts and tits all they want so long as it doesn’t tread on others.

I know the Left and Right both have gender critical factions. I think mine might be a Left leaning perspective, because I think the Right actually thinks men are born with male brains, women are born with female brains, yada yada. Kind of like their distorted view on gays. I don’t share any of that. It’s about safety and minimizing perverts for me, with trannies.

Tying this back to OSU, my big issue with Riley was his nepotism. He did NOT hand jobs to the best qualified people, but instead handed jobs to his friends. Again, I support this type of thing in no way whether male, female, a friend, family, etc. If we had the best person for every job society would be much better overall.

          • Gotcha I interpreted that wrong. I thought you were saying my point was ridiculous. But anyway, I did want to add to the comment so I did.

          • 7
            1

“I don’t get how “progressives” can support this stuff and simultaneously say they support women’s rights and female empowerment.”

Yeah it’s pretty mind boggling isn’t it? it’s amazing that so called progressives believe these notions are somehow liberal. Female is not a feeling. Female is not about liking pink, having a “lady brain” or liking makeup and dresses. And vice versa. If a woman is a tomboy, likes sports, doesn’t like dresses….how in anyway does that make her more of a man than me? Fundamentally, gender ideology is about regressive stereotyping about what it is to “be a man” or a “woman.”

“If gender is purely a matter of choice, then it ceases to have any significance. That then flies in the face of over a century of progress in women’s rights and female empowerment.”

Absolutely correct! It also eliminates the entire notion of women as a distinct sex-class where we are often oppressed by the reality of our bodies (sex-based oppression). Just look at the entire Roe discussion online. Liberals telling women they can’t name themselves as women for the sake of “inclusivity”. Instead we are reduced to “birthing bodies”, “pregnant people”, “uterus havers”, “menstruators.” Fuck off to all of that.

“‘Trans women’ don’t have the same experience as women, nor do they face the same challenges.”

            Exactly.

And then of course there is the entire other issue of Trans-identified people eroding homosexual folks’ boundaries and insisting they sleep with them lest they be labeled a bigot. So many problems with this entire “movement.”

            2

In my opinion, both sides are captured by their own cults. MAGA on the right, Trans Ideology on the left. But I don’t want to do a “both sides” here, I do think the MAGA cult is far more dangerous than the trans cult by a couple points.

          • 3
            2

What I hate about MAGA is they think they’re for individual rights, yet they constantly trample on other’s rights as a sign of freedom. They don’t seem to understand that boundary that yeah, you have rights, until your rights infringe on mine, and then you have no rights unless you want the consequences (prison, censorship, etc). Basically they don’t understand you can’t yell “fire” in a theater (and it’s not censorship), which is a concept as old as civilized societies. It’s maybe the confusion of a “right” with a “privilege” that’s causing this indignancy that then leads to extremism.

I guess this is what is happening with “Trans rights”, too, which is a confusion with privileges. It seems both extremes stem from a confusion of rights vs privileges.

Well said Angry! There are quite a lot of similarities between MAGA and TRA cults:

-Violence, threats of violence, and verbal abuse can be justified if you don’t get your way.
-their rights are more important/matter more than others.
            -constant victim mentality
-demand total compliance from others/try to control other peoples’ behavior
            -perpetually enraged and fearful
-infiltrating levels of government to enact policy changes that suit them
-purity mindset of the in-group (who are the best and most virtuous followers?)
-excommunication/shaming of members who leave or are critical of the movements
-each group “drowns out” more moderate voices (AKA they are both loud minorities)

I’m sure there’s probably more similarities!

#2 is the biggest one, because it leads to everything else. Feeling indignant is very powerful because it leads to righteous causes. That’s why both the Alt-Right and Regressive Left feel like cults.

It matters quite a lot actually. Part of the motivation for his entire catfishing attempt was that he got a thrill of being “perceived as a woman”, and it was a way to live “the life he really wanted.” At the end of the day he was a closeted gay man who wanted to date a straight man. So instead of accepting reality, he did what he did. The level of selfishness was off the charts.

I also got the impression that the documentary tried to portray him as a sympathetic victim because of his trans-identifying status. the dude had absolutely no accountability and did not come across as remotely remorseful.

This is all spot on. The “trans athletes” (i.e. male athletes) should simply form their own leagues if it’s truly about competing in sports. I don’t think anyone on either side would complain about this since. But that they don’t even discuss doing this implies it’s about something way darker (closet gay, dominating women, locker room access, etc). It’s something bad. Sports are the socially acceptable front. Freud called this sublimation. If you want to play sports, form leagues and play against your peers like everyone else.

          • Having their own leagues or playing with men wouldn’t be validating though! In order for them to achieve validation, they demand total access to women’s spaces and anything less than them getting total compliance is tRaNsPhObIa.

It’s also a lot like how so-called transbians (trans-identified men who are attracted to women) who constantly harangue actual lesbians for not sleeping with them. So you’d think, well hey, trans women are women right as they ALWAYS say? Why not date each other then? but of course they won’t do that…

They could make another league for trans athletes who also happen to be obese.

            Trans-Fats?

I worked with a trans woman several years ago(former man who transitioned to woman) and they were dating a lesbian woman. Wasnt any of my business but definitely was hard to keep everything straight(no pun intended)
We were pretty good friends actually. Interesting and thoughtful person. Just….different…

          • Ah yes the spicy straights/straight with extra steps!

Amazing in this day and age a garden variety straight/heterosexual relationship could be seen as “queer” or part of the LGBTQIA+++

I’ve never understood how trans people got lumped in with the LGB crowd. Trans folks may be either “straight” or “gay/lesbian” right? If I was gay I’d be pissed that they’re considered part of my community.

      • He had 3-4 good years in the NFL. He was a team captain in San Diego, but injuries kept him from getting consistent playing time most of his career.

        • Really? I wouldn’t consider any of his time in the NFL good. I think he maxed out at like 60 tackles and had like 1 career sack. You should watch the documentary. He’s good in it. He’s open about the anxiety and trauma the incident caused and how it effected his play on the field. The way his teammates treated him was also shocking, in a bad way. Machismo needs to go away. Horrible trait.
