It’s sadly time to stop discussing trannies and penixes and instead to focus on da Beavs. Here’s my game by game breakdown.
Boise St – W
Fresno St – W
Montanta St – W
USC – W
Utah – W
Stanford – L
Washington St – L
Colorado – W
Washington – W (and a broken Penix)
Cal – W
Arizona St – L
Oregon – W
So I have the Beavs breaking through this year with a 9-3 record. Last year I was spot on with a 7 win bowl team. Smith of course is the wildcard again this year. If he goes for 4th downs at the same pace, I think he costs us at least one game. Last year that figure was 1 game per the math, but if you watched the games it was at least 2. This year I do think he has slightly better talent so maybe one or two of those 4th downs go our way this year that didn’t last year.
Something else I’m going to be looking for is the Beavs finally winning those “if only he made that catch” and “if only he actually caught that interception instead of batting down the ball” type plays. I feel like we finally have the players in the system to complete plays. Those plays are the difference in games, and thus they become the difference in seasons.
Possible outcomes +/- 2 games due to Smith and the “if only” plays. In other words, I have the range of outcomes as 7-5 to 11-1, so I’m settling at 9-3. The brutal (and key) part of the schedule is Utah, Stanford, Washington St. On the road at Utah = physical game. Then they have to go play Stanford on the road. Physical game. So I think that makes Stanford a definite loss. Same reason I think Washington St is a loss. They likely won’t be recovered from that rough stretch until the following week. It makes winning the first 5 games key to the season. Falter there and again we could be looking at that lower end of 7-5 or so.
Let’s hear your predictions, etc.
Dam, that’s pretty optimistic. Hope youre right.
I’m looking at ASU as being the biggest dumpster fire in the league this year, so I have them, Stanford and WSU as Ws, along with Boise, Mt State, Colorado, UW and Cal plus 1 from the remaining teams in an upset as a possible bonus
So 8-4 (with a shot at 9-3)for me plus a bowl loss.
I mean you say I’m optimistic then have the same 9-3 as your second most likely outcome…
9-3 is more my glass half full best possible outcome.
But I’m saying you’re optimistic because you have Utah/USC and Oregon all as Ws, plus both of the Mountain West non con games. All 5 teams are preseason top 25 or at least received votes.
Ah gotcha. I feel like this is smiths best team…if he doesn’t mess it up.
I feel like this is the year he can step back and let the players play and the coaches coach. Going for it on 4th down versus punting or taking a delay of game then punt will be the difference. I honestly believe he did not have confidence in Tibs defense to get the ball back if the team is pinned back deep. If the Beavs get the 1st down, then they still have the ball. If we don’t get the 4th down at midfield instead of pinning the opponent deep, then at least the opponent will score quicker and take less time off the clock. e.g. Purdue game. I don’t see us needing to have that mentality/philosophy anymore unless the coaches game plan to use 4 downs to get a first down(rare and should not be part of the game plan IMHO).
Captains announced. Gebbia is one, despite Daschel saying he’s not in the 2 deep.
Weird to not have the starting QB as a captain again.
https://twitter.com/Coach_Smith/status/1562226817552904192?t=wzTV4C1WUV6-9K5N3-vLhA&s=19
Gebbia must be the absolute MAN to keep ending up as a captain. He’s like the Ryan Gunderson of the Smith era.
Angry if we win the first five games, we’ll be bringing a top 20 ranking into the Stanford game.
I’m thinking either a loss against Boise or Fresno. Losses against USC (mobile QB) and Nikeand one more surprise loss. Everything else is very winnable. Utah is going to be better later in the year because they’re breaking in so many new guys on defense. I’m going with 8 wins total.
Overall this team just seems solid, but not spectacular. I feel like we’re back in the Riley days where we know we can hang with anyone, but we also know we’re never really going to be dominant.
I will say it still feels like the conference is up for grabs this year. Utah and Nike are both making huge changes. USC will score a lot, but can they play defense?
How many chances to win the conference will the Beavs squander before the conference just folds?
USC has a lot of distractions and it’s at home. Should win.
Who was the last running QB we beat, though? Williams is one of the best I’ve seen in a long time.
Daniels.
Williams is more of an improvise for his life type of guy. Reminds me of recent Russell Wilson. Sometimes tries to do too much and it costs him. I’m hoping a good defensive scheme will confuse him leading to costly turnovers.
Son went to OU (U of O this year) last year so I watched all their games and family weekend in person versus West Virginia. As a freshman Williams was special. He is a play maker who can run like no true QB in the PAC 12 in at least 20 years.
I think we have better athletes now. Stopping running QBs is a function of scheme and athletes, and I think we have both. Bray could be a big deal in that regard.
Agree. Bray will have ’em playing fast and not overthinking their roles. More positives than negatives to that approach, IMHO.
“How many chances to win the conference will the Beavs squander before the conference just folds?”
One.
Last year was a major wasted opportunity
Yep. All on Smith’s calls.
MBB beats a third division Italian team by 50 points. You have to like seeing that when we’ve struggled against NAIA competition in the past.
Marial still playing and still healthy!
Apparently they had something like 23 steals. With that Mississippi guard having 4 I think. Got some guys that are committed to the defensive side of the floor it looks like. When a Tinkle coached team is committed to defense we win games.
I said 6-6 a few weeks back, but I see 8-4 or 9-3 now. The secondary and DL rotation is much deeper than last year.
I don’t see wins @ Fresno, @ Utah, or @ UW. Utah and UW will have punishing run offenses this year.
Oregon’s a toss-up because their defense is much improved.
Holiday Bowl vs. Miami
UW’s rush o was terrible last year.
How do you know Oregon’s defense is much improved? They lost 2 of their best players. Just because they hired a defensive coach it automatically makes them better in year 1? He’s a first time HC if I’m not mistaken what if he just can’t run a program?
UW couldn’t throw the ball so everyone stacked the box against them.
UO’s defense wasn’t very good last year outside of a few good players. 35 ppg given up over the last 5 games. Not difficult to improve on that with the talent on that roster
True but lost a lot of production as well.
Is there reason to believe that people won’t be able to stack the box on UW again?
I doubt UW will lose their top four receivers in the first game of the year again.
Definitely would have picked Oregon if it were in autzen but I think we can eek out a win at home. I’m not sure who they play the week before but hopefully someone who dings them up.
Utah lol
Utah didn’t ding them last year, they DONGED them, twice.
Good example of Angry’s point about the lack of transitive properties, pretty sure OSU scored more points in one win over Utah than Oregon scored in two losses.
And also, UO beat Ohio State and OSU, and Utah lost to Ohio State….
Haha Oregon plays Utah in Autzen the week before the ucks go to Corvallis for the Civil War.
The first half of the schedule is pretty brutal
Boise St – L
Fresno St – L
Montanta St – W
USC – L
Utah – L
Stanford – W
Washington St – W
Colorado – W
Washington – L
Cal – W
Arizona St – W
Oregon – W
So, you’ve got 7 wins; that’s enough to beat Vegas’ 6.5 line and payoff for this old beav.
I agree with most of your picks, but think there’s a W between Boise St and Fresno with an offsetting L possible vs WaSt.
Really like the optimism so far, when was the last time Whiskey and angry predicted a W vs quack and 8+ wins was a common theme??
I’m not sold on Lanning and UO at all. Yes they have talent but Lanning and his staff are going to have to prove it on the field.
I predict they’ll be game for UGA. And lose. Due to the familiarity but UGA has way better talent. And everyone will buy in to the quack hype.
And they’ll finish with 8-9 wins.
The interviews are up for today’s practice. There are like six but worth checking out. You get a feel for the players mindsets.
Some notes.
– Gould calls the receiver room playmakers.
-Fisher says with the DL new techniques it helps them a lot.
-Fisher was a former OLB so he says it helps him with his pass rush. That definitely showed up on film.
– Supposdely the DL is getting into the backfield much more.
– Overall theme is knowing your role and owning it.
Gould could be a killer for opponents and really open things up. He hasn’t been used enough.
Agree! Seems really chippy and fiery which is good to a point. He was the first 1 in on the fight to backup Harrison in the civil war. I wonder if that’s been a part of why he hasn’t played more.
Harrison and Linsey are inconsistent as hell with way to many drops. I would guess head cases. I would start Gould, Bolden and Valsin. They have been impressing in camp and no baggage. They also have big play potential on deep balls, screens and catch and runs. Musgrave I would have on short lease for drops and penalties too. We need fewer mistakes this year to reach 8-9 wins.
Here’s what I have in my mind right now; which teams are returning HC for their 2nd season or more on the schedule? 7/12. 5 teams with new HC. Now is that a recipe for wins? No, but it does bode well for a team that has stability and is trending up. Here’s the list of coaches:
Boise St – Returning 2nd year(7-5 last year)
Fresno St – 1st season Jeff Tedford(remember 2007 #2 team in the country and lose in the red zone in 4th quarter at home)
Montanta St – Top ranked FCS coming off championship game
USC – 1st year HC Lincoln Riley
Utah – returning HC
Stanford – Returning HC
Washington St – 1st year HC
Colorado – 2nd season HC
Washington – 1st season HC
Cal – Returning HC
Arizona St – Dumpster fire returning HC
Oregon – 1st season HC
With that said, here is my predictions:
Boise St – W
@Fresno St – W
(N)Montanta St – W
USC – W
@Utah – L
@Stanford – W
Washington St – W
Colorado – W
BYE WEEK
@Washington – L
Cal – W
@Arizona St – W
Oregon – W
Ya I think that a lot of people are overlooking the continuity thing and new HCs.
I agree with you that others are looking at the talent of players on the roster instead of coaching changes and getting players to “buy in” to the the new coaches philosophies. It has taken Coach Smith 5 years to go from 1-11 to a potential 8+ win season with more wins than the previous season. We cannot have a regression year if recruting is to be improved(which i believe already has improved year over year).
UW has a bye week the same week the Beavers do. I have this as a flat let down game on the road, similar to the CAL game on the road last year. 10-2 is what I have currently, but there is the 4th down attempts by the river boat gambler. I want to see us take a penalty and punt when we’re at the 50 or more. 45-35 with a 4th and 2, and the offense has the defense on their heals from pounding the ball, ok I can see going for it. Otherwise, punt, pin em deep and let your defense make plays.
I’ll only give you a half for Tedford at Cal since he was previously a head coach their recently.
Look, I’d love to be wrong. But I’ve been a Beav fan long enough to not get my expectations too high anymore.
If they go 7-5? Well then they met my shitty expectations. Anything more is gravy.
I know some will think my line of thinking is part of the problem. Expecting mediocrity. Ask yourself. Is Oregon State ever going to be anything other than mediocre at best? Especially considering the landscape going forward?
I highly doubt it. I’d love to be wrong.
As I stated. Enjoy these next two seasons. Because I don’t see it getting better going forward.
Bray factor anyone? This is the biggest change heading into the season and will definitely decide a lot of games. Remebember us wanting the players to be more hyped well I think we’ll get that with Bray. I think Bray will bring energy, aggressiveness, hard hitting, and turnovers. With Bray at the helm last year I don’t think its Crazy to think he could’ve been the difference in 2-4 games. I look at WSU, Colorado, Purdue, and maybe Cal. I think Bray’s D will bring those plays that angry mentioned above. That pick instead of deflection, strip sack instead of the ball being thrown away, the big stop on 3rd or 4th down. 2 of those 4 games were 1 score games and I think he’s at least that much better than Tibs.
Energy and enthusiasm aren’t enough. I like the mix of 3/4 and 4/3, and keeping it simpler and faster, but i want to see how well he diagnoses the opposition, game plans, and makes in-game adjustments.
And will the Beavs finally NOT get embarrassed by FR and first-time-starting QBs?
I’m afraid the D was so bad under Banker and Andersen’s D Coordinator that Bray may be benefiting from recency bias.
I need to see something very good from Bray to have confidence in the D after the bowl game.
Bowl game was an anomaly and was not Bray’s defensive schemes. Bray’s defense is 180 degrees from what Tibs defense was the last 5 years. Tibs was sit back, stay in your area, don’t drape yourself over the WR on a pass route, etc. I have followed Bray’s career as a LB coach at Oregon State, then at Nebraska, then back at Oregon State. Nebraska fans said Bray was the only Mike Riley assistant that had the best position group on those Nebby teams. I am all in with Coach Bray.
Agree on Bray being a big upgrade, but why wasn’t it his scheme in the bowl game?
Look at the DL/DE play as well as the CB’s. DL were reading run/pass like a LB instead of stunting, breaking off the block to work towards the play. CB’s were not bumping or up near the LOS, but 8-10 yards back. Also, switching defensive scheme for 1 game is going to make your players question themselves, but at the same time, the players had to change their mentality from “Stay assignment sound” versus just go as Sandburg said in his interview. The defense will appear faster, and more cohesive than what we think of the beavers defense. I see and hear the players in their interviews and they sound, behave, and look different. This is our year, it just feels right. This team, season, etc just seems like the best product Oregon State has had in a long time. If they go 7-5 or even 5-7, then it will be because of injuries or poor QB and OL play. This team is not “Loaded”, but it’s as deep as it has ever been at all the positions. OL, DL, LB, CB, S, RB, WR, TE(?), QB.
I would say that there wasn’t a fair amount of time to install his defense and truly get people in right positions for that defense. Might not have been a 3-4 def3nse anymore but to say a team would be competent and stellar with a month of a new defense and against a bowl caliber team is not realistic. Honestly, he should get a pass this year at a minimum based on time and the players brought in for a totally different scheme. However, if the offense can keep pace with their performance from prior years I think even a minimal increase in the defense gets them a win or two that they haven’t gotten previously.
I’m surprised that Nolan is not a captain and yet 3rd string Gebbia is. QB is my biggest fear for this year. Will Nolan have his breakout year? Can he LEAD the offense? If so then the team wins more games this year. If Nolan hasn’t improved then I think we are headed for another frustrating let down season. I’m hoping for a Super Nolan to arrive this year! Go Beavs!
Another note with 6 captains instead of 4 with a 5th being rotated each week makes me think the players are indeed stepping up as leaders.
Imagine if Nolan approached the level of Aaron Rodgers when he was at Cal…
Probably not, but unless he has a learning disability or something strange like that, you have to assume he’ll be much better with a few thousand more reps under his belt.
Levity, equity, and justice returns to NCAA football as Saban is again the sport’s highest paid coach. For now.
Highest paid public school football coaches in annual compensation for 2022 season
Nick Saban, Alabama: $10.695 million
Kirby Smart, Georgia: $10.25 million
“Saban will make $10.695 million in 2022 in base salary, talent fee and completion benefit. That does not include incentive bonuses.
…
Saban’s contract stipulates that he and/or his representation meet with Byrne every February to look at marketplace trends.
…
“We want to make sure coach Saban and Miss Terry are very happy with our level of support,” Alabama athletics director Greg Byrne told The Tuscaloosa News in June. “That has been the case in the past, and that will be the case in the future. So we have ongoing conversations to make sure that’s appropriate.”

Because no one said anything about Boise State, I’m compiling a few links for convenience:
https://collegefootballnews.com/2022/08/boise-state-broncos-preview-2022-season-prediction-breakdown-key-games-players/amp
Last year their D allowed 19 ppg and had more INTS (13) than passing TDs allowed (12):
https://athlonsports.com/.amp/college-football/boise-state-football-broncos-prediction-preview-2022
https://amp.idahostatesman.com/sports/college/mountain-west/boise-state-university/boise-state-football/article263644288.html
And don’t forget Oregonian QB Sam Vidlak is on their bench! Boo! Sam shoulda stayed!
Given Oregon State may end up in the mountain west conference, this game may be of particular interest. BSU hasn’t had a losing season since 97 or 98 and is typically picked to win the conference.
Some notable predictions from beat writers in SEC country….and ND:
https://collegefootballnews.com/2022/08/college-football-expert-picks-predictions-week-1-saturday-2022/16
Preseason schedule is no joke. MSU and Fresno St scare me. Any P12 appointment on the road is tough no matter what. Seems everyone likes Beavs to beat USC… very unlikely the Beavs win vs Trojans IMO.
Prediction
1-2 Nonconference
1-3 P12 road games
3-2 P12 home games
If Nolan progresses and takes care of the ball plus D is top 5 in P12 in takeaways and sacks, I say 10-2 is ceiling… but I just don’t see this D being that good when it really matters. Feel pretty good about Nolan though
The latest Colletto interview is great. He could probably do telecasting if he wanted to.
I keep mentioning we have better athletes now that can maybe swing some of these 50-50 plays, and some key guys in that regard are a healthy Julian, of course (I had him as a high 4-star right off the bat), Chatfield, and Mathias Malaki-Donaldson. The latter won defensive MVP of practice last week. I also had Valsin as a high 3-star and an “answer to our small WR problem” in my notes, and he’s apparently making a huge push. Elite speed in Gould that actually might get opportunity. Etc. But anyway, I think people are sleeping a bit on the level of athlete we have now.
I haven’t follow closely this camp, so I’m not sure how every guy I like is doing, but having bodies like that is huge.
It’s the Beavs….with a tough schedule.
6-6
Seems more realistic.
This one is great, too. Better players but also smart players. You can tell by the way they talk.
He brings up a good point that I forgot, when people are saying USC will beat us at home…we went undefeated at home last year with inferior players compared to what we have this year. Undefeated. This is a mentality shift. I see a lot of fans still stuck in the past in this thread. Right above is one “It’s the Beavs….with a tough schedule. 6-6” – that is true 10 years ago under Riley or GA. Definitely a different athlete now and definitely incremental progress, though this year is looking more like a leap due to bodies filling out, more intelligence in the program, attitudes changing, and better coaching (bray). I feel like Lindgren might be a weak link, but he’s okay…Smith’s gambling is the other weak link.
Fisheralso brings up Easton Mascarenas. Forgot about him. Just so much more depth…depth is so huge. D could be really really good.
Good points! Stanford has very smart, level headed players, leads to fewer dumb penalties and a well oiled machine — not the end all be all, but probably adds two wins to the win column. I’ve seen enough of the river boat gambler to take away at least two of those wins….and just a lot of very tough road games this year.
We have really good players. The best since 2006 at least, and maybe the best since the Fiesta team. Having really good players helps deal with tough schedules. The toughest part of the schedule I marked down the losses. We might even have the depth to deal with that part of the schedule, though…will have to see in the first few weeks how some of the younger guys step up and if they can provide even more depth.
I’m trying to find a weakness in the team. Maybe Levengood. No real evidence of issues, but maybe just due to lack of experience at C. Maybe Everett Hayes being somewhat unreliable. I don’t see much else. Who are our backup center and kicker if these guys can’t get the job done?
Agreed that talent is solid across the board, but we don’t really have any standout players. If you look at other programs, solid talent gets you to 6 or 7 wins, but it’s the gamebreaking plays that take you to the next level. Those don’t have to come from superstars, but they usually do.
We really need a breakout season from someone like Gould, Lowe or Martinez on offense.
I think Gould and Martinez could break out. People are sleeping on Musgrave. He is huge and could dominate. I think it’s more accurate to say we don’t have any obvious superstar right now, but we probably have some lurking on the roster. My O candidates would be Musgrave, Martinez, Harrison, Gould, and even Nolan if he makes one more step, and if Nolan does that, it makes all of these guys even better.
I don’t think a team needs superstars, though, if it doesn’t happen. I think very good players across the board is a fine strategy.
Ever heard of Mike Hass, Jonus Newton, James Newson, Mitch Meeuwsen, Lyle Maoveo? Ya, those guys were “solid” and not deemed standouts either….no one has touched Mitch’s Interception record at OSU.
Exactly. Superstars have a way of just appearing.
Sometimes little things tell a lot; class move at about 4:04. His mama would be proud and he kept focus on the interview question as well.
Fisher is refreshingly articulate. Explaining his development both outside and inside LB and how they complement each other…none of the usual “flying around making plays.
AND: “We’re changing the narrative!”
Woo-hoo! What players say THAT? Now I’m excited for the season.
I really liked Fishers speed in the ASU game and look forward to him being out there more. He also mentioned Easton’s intelligence, his understanding of the D, and his ability to now play fast. Going to be a fun season!
They should’ve have sent Colletto and Fisher to media days.
Yeah Fisher is a new favorite. Clearly an intelligent guy, passionate, and well spoken. Looks completely ripped and ready to have a big season, too.
Something else I think makes for great teams are the bit players who make big players to ignite the team and rally around. Colletto is a perfect example. Kord Shaw, who I think is the next Colletto, could be another to watch. I think any of the TEs behind Musgrave should fall into this camp, too.
BTW, it looks like Atticus Sappington and Josh McCormick are our alternatives to Hayes. Can’t say I know much about either, but it’s nice having options if Hayes continues to kick at a mid 60% rate. That’s just not good enough.
I’m surprised Dunmore and Tongue haven’t been in the starting WR mix. Maybe they evolve over the course of the season via injuries or something, but it seems natural it would be their time now. Both legitimate 4-star talents. Anyone know the issue with those guys?
Interesting write up regarding Lindgren interview:
https://democratherald.com/corvallis/sports/beavers-sports/football/osu-football-beavers-close-training-camp-turn-focus-to-regular-season/article_4e226452-232b-11ed-a9aa-d765fe435eb1.html
Dunmore’s rating seemed to be based mostly on speed and camp performance. He’s probably not at a different level than someone like Irish or Gould, just managed to get higher profile camp looks and ended up at Penn State.
Tongue wasn’t considered a WR by Georgia and that’s why he transferred. Maybe they were on to something? Seems like a tweener WR/TE type and they wanted to convert him to safety.
I thought our usage of WR last year was highly questionable. I think we did a bad job of putting the best guys on the field, and there was way too much subbing and rotation. Guessing that’s mostly the WR coach though surely Lindgren was involved…but all that to say, I share your concern that Dunmore and Tongue aren’t involved.
Though with Tongue specifically it seems like he’s been injured nonstop since he got to Corvallis, so maybe that’s the whole story there.
There have been some positive practice comments about Tongue. Not so much about Dunmore, though Daschel had him in his two-deep.
Constantly injured.. so you’re saying Tongue can’t take a lick?
Fun fact: Marco Brewer was statistically the #1 offensive lineman in the entire Conference as ranked by profootball focus.
Fuaga was top 5, too, IIRC. OL should be very good again.
I think we go 10-2
Boise state W
Fresno state L
Montana state W
USC W
Utah W
Stanford W
Washington state L
Colorado W
Bye week
Washington W
Cal W
Arizona state MAJOR DUB
Oregon W
Games I could see going either way Utah, Oregon and Washington state.
And yes I’m hopping on the sunshine wagon but for once this year I think it’s the right wagon to be on.
I guess another weakness that’s not any position group per se would be the deep ball. Gulbranson should probably be QB #2 for this reason. If Nolan can’t complete passes over 20+ yards with consistency might have to make that change. I like Gebbia still, but it’s clear that injury messed up his trajectory, and he’s never really taken the leap.
Musgrave has to step up and help there, too. He’s poised for a huge season.
Some notable stats from Beav basketball’s dominant win in Italy yesterday:
Tyler Bilodeau: 19 Points, 8-9 Shooting, 7 Rebounds
Jayden Stevens: 17 Points, 4 Rebounds
Jordan Pope: 10 Points
Chol Marial: 8 Points, 7 Rebounds
Dexter Akanno, Dzmitry Ryuny: 9 Points
Glenn Taylor Jr., Nick Krass: 4 steals
It’s obviously better to win these than lose, but my question is how much it really matters given the level of competition. 24 steals is like a Globetrotters vs. Generals-level mismatch.
Yeah who cares about a basketball game in Italy…we suck at basketball, and it was a game in Italy.
While I understand your frustration with the basketball team, we are still only a year and a half removed from a conference tourney win and an Elite Eight appearance. I get what you are saying, it is a mostly meaningless game half a world away and while last year was awful and tough to watch, there is hope for a Tinkle coached team when they are committed on the defensive end of the floor. So while we can’t really glean much from these games, they do still provide some sample of what to expect.
You lost me at “…there is hope for a Tinkle coached team…”
This argument doesn’t work when he’s made multiple tourney appearances with completely different sets of players.
It does work based on actually watching how poorly he coaches.
Making the tournament is not that hard. Equivalent to a low level bowl game. Yawn.
Haha
Lost in the shuffle a bit has been Isaiah Newell’s apparent rise up the RB depth chart. Sounds like we’ll be going with Fenwick, Martinez, and maybe Newell as the main 3. Griffin has been nursing an injury and Lowe will probably end up as a situational guy like last year when we need his speed.
There is no indication Newell is the 3rd. Most likely Fenwick and Martinez with Lowe as a 3rd down back than probably Giffin. Wouldn’t be surprised if Newell announces a transfer soon.
I lean more in the 7 wins this season, but I easily see why others are as strongly behind a better finish (the 8-10 wins potentially some have put out). That’s a very different feeling-wise than before!
A season can always turn sour quickly, ofc that can happen even with very strong programs.
But it feels at this point in this program’s tenure there should be *expectations* i.e. the bar, and less over whether fans are being more or less optimistic.
To be fair, the players have raised the bar, not fans. Fans are feeding off of players’ confidence in themselves(at least I am). Let down’s happen when teams give up on themselves or don’t believe in themselves.
Or Like Mike Tyson said, “Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth…”
I’ve heard every GA team come out of fall camp saying the exact same things as these guys are saying and GA praising how much bigger faster stronger, off-season hard work paying off etc.
I have already predicted an 11-1 Rose Bowl run, but I’m hoping to see it on the field not in interviews with tired cliches.
Those GA teams were so weak and slow
But they wore big boy pants.
And brought their, “eh?” Game?
Oh, yes. It’s why I vibe with the sentiments that are more positive? In the past, when any one boasted the Beavers would finish with a great record (9-10+ wins and /finally/ to the Rose Bowl) 90% of the time it wasn’t even considered serious i.e. pie in the sky and all that.
Even people who weren’t as versed in football could watch recent games from the last couple of seasons and find aspects of what players were doing that were good, compared to before. That stands out for me, at least.
“The brutal (and key) part of the schedule is Utah, Stanford, Washington St. On the road at Utah = physical game. Then they have to go play Stanford on the road. ” I like this analysis.
Does anyone know if Smith previews the season with the team, points out these kinds of issues and considerations, and starts preparing them mentally for the SEASON? I know the popular cliche is “one game at a time,” but I think if you want to have a special season, you’d have to look at the whole season, provide some context and considerations for the team, then address match-ups and strategy week to week. I don’t expect Smith to say “..so that week should be a loss…” bur rather just pointing out that kind of context to help them prepare.
That is an excellent point. Hope he does, but I doubt he does.
So i think a few things are key for this team to take the next step.
1. They need to stay healthy. This is true for any team but to make a special run its definitely important. This team is deeper than its been in a long time but there are key positions where they cant afford an injury or more than 1. T on offense is scary to me. i dont trust Morano or Spencer to come in and be able to start at a high level just yet. C the same thing I dont trust Miller i feel like he is very undersized. I disagree with angry here I think Levengood is very good and can be all pac 12. I imagine if any of these injuries occur there will be some shuffling instead of putting these guys in. CB, safety, ILB, DL all cant afford more than 1 or 2 injuries before we see a big drop off IMO.
2. Qb play. Chance needs to show marked improvement. His deep ball needs to improve obviously but he also needs to do a better job of checking it down. He started to do a better job towards the end of the year which is why Lowe was able to start impacting the game much more. There would be many times when Lowe would be sitting wide open in the flats and Nolan would force it somewhere else. He also needs to take care of the ball better especially with fumbles.
3. They need to play much better on the road obviously. If they did last year they wouldve been 9-3.
4. Hayes needs to make 80% or so from 35 and in and make all his PATs.
5. Turnovers. they need to make the plays when theyre there like angry said. Also need to take care of the ball. This team isnt good enough to turn it over and win. also cant beat themselves with penalties.
Never said Levengood wasn’t good. In fact I implied the opposite. Just has lack of experience at C that could be a concern.
So, play best football of their lives, play clean games, and don’t get hurt. That about sum it up?
Not at all. Their college players so they should be playing the best football of their lives each year or something is wrong tho. Basically need to stay healthy at key positions and don’t beat themselves with penalties and turnovers. Make the plays that are there, like gimme field goals, easy receptions, hit open receivers etc.
Are there any betting sites that have the Beavs with a 5.5 O/U for wins?
I’m hesitant to play 6.5, but would be all over 5.5.
Last year was the year for betting on Beavs imo
I love the optimism! I’m only seeing 3 blood bank guarantee wins Montana St, ASU, and Colorado. NO WAY the Oregon State Beavers start this season 5-0.
Angry you’ve gone mad I tell you, MAD!
Covid.
But seriously, I just think this is Smith’s best team. If they’re not then I’m wrong, but I’m not afraid to put thoughts in writing like many who show up to criticize after the fact…
Respect sir, the biggest ? for me is the RB position. Huge void back there and not a lot of proven horses back there. I’ve always referred to OSU as running back U, somehow there always seems to be a stud in the backfield for us. I haven’t looked into much tape on the freshman. Does anyone have good info for which one looks promising?
Have you watched Martinez’ film? It’s excellent. Newell has stepped up. Fenwick was good. Lowe…we also have the 4-star transfer from GaTech. We’re actually stacked there.
You lost all credibility there. The backfield is loaded plus Colletto.
Baylor stepped in nicely when Jefferson left. Coach M we trust
This year reminds me of Quizz’s freshman year. We lost yvenson, but his backup was coming back as well. Not saying Fenwick isn’t good, just saying we are loaded at running backs this year. Martinez is the future, but will the other transfer backs be better with their experience? Lower will most likely be used as a possession receiving back for 3rd and short situations.
Fenwick was good situationally last year, he just doesn’t seem explosive enough to make big plays. Lowe is better as a receiving option so he got the passing down snaps even though he’s a terrible blocker (PFF pass blocking score of 1 on a 1-100 scale).
Fenwick was good situationally last year, he just doesn’t seem explosive enough to make big plays
Sounds a lot like Baylor a few years ago. Also sounds a lot like Jerome Bettis. The reality is things change and all of this stuff is fluid. One of these guys will step up and be great. I have zero doubt or concern about RB.
Based on film/potential or past production, my order would be:
1. Martinez
2. Fenwick
Lowe as the passing game back. Colletto at the goal line. I’d give Newell 3-5 carries per game to see if he’s a gamer and his rise is legit. He has really nimble feet on film. Give the GaTech guy mopup duties and see what he can do there, then constantly reassess until you find the ideal.
Continuity, consistency, and also play your best player. Rotating RB’s in and out after a big gain has always made me mad. If your RB needs a breather after a 20+ yard gain, then you need to do more conditioning IMO. You don’t do that for a WR after they run a 20+ yard route they ran, but didn’t get the ball thrown to them.
With that said, there are different packages you can use now that there is depth! Short yardage, Red Zone, 3rd down, power, etc:
Every down back:
1) Martinez
2) Fenwick
3rd down short:
1) Trey Lowe
2) Fenwick(experience with picking up the blitz)
3rd down long:
1) Fenwick
2) Martinez
3) Lowe(screen pass or flat catch option)
Short Yardage:
1) Colletto AND/OR Martinez(Colletto as Wild Cat OR FB)
2) Colletto AND/OR Fenwick(Colletto as Wild Cat OR FB)
Red Zone:
1) Lowe
2) Fenwick OR Martinez
Goal line 5 yard line to endzone:
1) Colletto
2) Martinez OR Fenwick
Zero carries for Newell? I think he’s earned a few this Spring. He has amazing feet. He might make a really good short yardage guy with those feet. The guy runs like Nijinsky.
Could be a weapon in the flat like Harrison is on screens. Give him the ball and let him just make a few guys miss.
Crap, forgot about Newell! lol Ya, he definitely deserves carries. I would say if we can take care of business during the Montana State game, I would say he gets playing time against them. Could only see Martinez in 4 games and split reps with Newell and in the other 8 games Newell isn’t splitting reps with Martinez. Newell can catch out of the backfield as well, so maybe he’s the second 3rd down back?
RB room is so DEEEEP this year! so many different skill sets. This will be a fun season to see what packages Lindgren and Coach M can come up with this season.
Yeah…really strange people are concerned with RB. It is probably the deepest position on the team.
Could this be a year where the offense is more run heavy? So many good backs. Taking the ball out of Nolan’s hands and letting the defense rest could really control the game if the o line is making holes. Smiths offense is creative enough you could keep the opposing defense on their toes.
As defenses load the box quick out to Harrison or leak out a TE. Keep it simple!!!
Yes. Smith does like to pass, tho…I see the run game dominating, and then some back breaking passes setup off that.
We have bodies on D and don’t really need to rest them via the run game like in the past, but it would play to the team’s strength.
long sustaining drives versus fast paced, quick hitting plays in space seems more of what this offense will attempt to accomplish this season. I don’t see the need to try to find big explosive plays to score TD’s this season. I predict we will have one of the top 25 Red Zone offense efficiencies in the country this season. I also foresee this team having a better 3rd down defense as well. “Bend don’t break” was Tibs’ defense. Bray’s defense will be “break their will before they break yours”.
I think the motto for this D will be “disruptive”…also, I think we will see them finish a lot more plays. That’s why I stressed the 50/50 plays that change games, and thus change seasons, in the opening post. The trajectory is that we finally have guys who have filled out and were legit 3+ star talents who are ready to complete plays.
Nolan is good within 25 yards, so keep the passes there. An ideal strategy would be using all of these backs and our very good offensive line to control the trench, then break their backs with passes inside 25 yards. Musgrave will be the big target in the redzone. He has to step up and be a game changer. He’s one of the KEY guys on offense. Some very good backup TEs, too, who might chip in if he doesn’t take that next step. I view Colletto and Musgrave as our best redzone players. Our WRs will be basically working between the 20s catching balls off play action that break the opponent’s back. I don’t think we have a WR who will get more than 5TDs receiving. Musgrave should have ~12TDs receiving if they do this right.
We have to also remember Nolan can run. He will break opponent’s will with his legs a few times. Gulbranson should be #2 for the same reason – good runner. But he can actually get the ball downfield, too. Gebbia just didn’t pan out (injuries and strangely batted balls), but he’s a leader and could still play a part in certain situations.
One week+ until the fun begins.
I think establishing Nolan as a run threat could help compensate for his lack of range. Designed run him a few times and green light him to go whenever there’s easy yardage. Make every defense have to account for him.
Totally agree, and for me this is a major X-factor for the season. Really hoping the obvious coaching prohibition on runs last year was just a function of lack of depth.
Though he does have to get smarter about the running too. Slide or get out of bounds, don’t take a hit or fight for yards. You’re not a RB dude.
I just hope I don’t have to yell. “RUN THE DAMN BALL!!” at my TV this season. If that doesn’t get uttered, then we will be significantly better. Otherwise, there is enough body of work where Lindgren has hit his ceiling of trying to show recruits “See, we need you so we CAN throw that deep ball!” We now have the QB recruits who can throw the deep ball(Gulbranson, Throckmorton, 2022 recruit Aidan Chiles); there is no reason to show we need a QB who can throw a deep ball and is mobile. Now we need to play to our strengths and who we have on the roster. The 25 yards or less passes need to be the cutoff. Throw maybe 1 or 2 deep balls a game to keep the defense honest(rather have 1 or 2 over thrown deep balls that go incomplete than 50/50 or short thrown balls deep by Nolan where they get intercepted.
Rumor has it Vidlak will start in Reser for Boise State. Get ready for a break out game.
We know how that story plays out, so this will be interesting to see if anything truly is different.
No it isn’t. Don’t buy that trolling angry.
Ah! Covid brain got me again.
PS. Covid sux
Brain fog is real. I slept 20 hours straight when I had covid and symptoms subsided, but the weakness and lack of appetite sucked.
Lack of appetite got me pretty good too. Had to pretty much force myself to eat at the end.
I lost 10 lbs in 5 days with lack of eating. I had to force myself to eat as well.
Seriously? Must be amazing to beat out Bachmeier. Douche
Beavs offered Al Afalava’s kid… watched Afalava when I was kindergartener and now his sons being recruited absolutely mind blowing
Isn’t he a CAL commit?
What position is he playing?
here is my table of predicted outcomes. I haven’t studied recruiting or what other teams are up to a lot, so for the most part I’m relying on trend analysis.
Boise State–W
@ Fresno State–L
Montana State–W
SC–L
@ Utah–L
@ Stanford–L
WSU–W
Colorado–W
@UW–L
Cal–W
@ ASU–W
UO–W
So Jack Colletto has his new line of Jack Hammer apparel up for sale now.
I’m holding out for the Milf Hammer designs though.
https://twitter.com/Jackcolletto/status/1562498400435572738?t=-r1AncxQ9aojONtMLBkCEQ&s=19
Maybe he should do one with cards on it…”Jack of All Trades” a card with him at LB, one carrying the ball, one throwing the ball, one interviewing with a female reporter? This season: quick kick?
Jack “Hammer” Colletto punt!?
Noticed this handy little schedule W/L tracker tool making the rounds today. Lets you pick all conference games and track how every Pac12 team stacks up in the standings.
Helped me realize just how weak UCLA’s schedule is this year, with Bowling Green, Alabama State and South Alabama as their non con games, and no Beavs or WSU. OSU should schedule like that
https://playoffpredictors.com/CFBFootball/Pac12/SchedulePicker/68EFB771-B6CB-462E-A994-C32824229DBF
Hit reset before using. It might load with my half-assed picks
(OSU went 11-1 and Utah undefeated. With CAL and UCLA coming in 3rd/4th)
Yeah we’ve been making life harder than it needs to be for decades now. This message never seems to get through to the AD. Only positive is we won’t be soft (TWSS)
Lights are on at Reser, temporary lights have been installed on the new side. Looks bright enough to play under. All 7:30pm home games, here we come!
Sure, but what’s the over/under on the new video board being ready to serve up big advertising for the first game?
Here’s an interesting tidbit from the Boise State scrimmages:
A week after the Boise State offense started hot in the first scrimmage of fall camp, it was the defense that got off to a strong start Saturday in scrimmage No. 2.
But the offense rallied, scoring on a 75-yard touchdown run from George Holani in a back-and-forth affair that left coach Andy Avalos pleased afterwards.
-On the backup quarterback battle between Taylen Green and Sam Vidlak, Avalos said both had their moments on Saturday.
“Both guys did some really good things,” Avalos said. “The strides we’ve seen from both Taylen and Sam have been huge, both in the run game and in the pass game. Those guys have a lot on them. For them it’s going to be the continuation of how they continue on the next week with the opponent scout reps and how they handle their preparation.”
https://www.bronconationnews.com/defense-starts-strong-offense-responds-in-back-and-forth-second-scrimmage-for-boise-state-football/
Sounds like they have an explosive back if he gets free in space. Bosie State spreads the CB’s out wide and leaves it up to the DL, LB’s and S’s to stop the runs. Boise also does spread option where they use a mobile QB.
With Sam Vidlak as a scout QB for their prep against Oregon State, he has an inside view of what Lindgren wants to accomplish. So I can understand why Lindgren isn’t giving a definitive answer on run game dominant, balance, or pass heavy. Also sounds like Boise State’s defense will be an unknown until they play. Beavs and Boise State had opposite camp results. Does this mean Boise State has an elite offense and their defense is average or their defense is mediocre which makes the offense look better than they are perceived by outsiders? I think the -2 is low for Oregon State and +3.5 is low as well. I would think -/+6.5 for this game.
Consensus opinion has been BSU’s defense will be good because that was their strength last year and Avalos is a defensive coach. Offense was hampered by injuries and poor line play last year. Here’s how the offense looks:
QB- Bachmeier scores similarly to Nolan overall. He’s somewhat mobile, but won’t kill you. Not as accurate as Nolan, but a little better on the deep ball. He was much better in the second half of 2021 than the first half. Actually played better on the road than at home.
RB- Holani is solid and a big dude. Behind him is a freshman who is undersized, but quick and shifty. Not a ton of depth here from what I can tell.
WR- This is one of the weaknesses for BSU. They lost their only good receiver to the draft. It’s a decent sized group (all 6’1 or 6’2), but they don’t have anyone that is an established threat. They’re all good run blockers, which could be important.
TE- Neither of the top two guys were really consistent threats last year.
OL- A real mixed bag here. They have a new starter at C. Guards are a mixed bag with one guy who was a dominant run blocker and terrible pass blocker and another guy who was bad at both. Tackles are a transfer from WSU who was a G there (good pass blocker, below average run blocker) and a returning starter from last year who was good, not great and more of a pass blocker than run blocker.
BSU passed more than they run last year, but it seems like the run game is the part to worry about here. Then again, we have a strong track record of making MWC QB’s look good.
Overall, the defense looks above average, but not spectacular across the board. Secondary is better than the front 7.
DE- A few new faces here: transfers from NIU/JC and one guy who was dominant at Weber State last year, but is listed as a backup on the depth chart. Other than that, PFF scores were good not great (similar scores to our guys).
DT- No real standouts here. All returners from last year.
LB- No real standouts here. All returners from last year.
Secondary- Probably the best positional group. All returners from last year. Pretty good-sized group who are good in coverage.
If we can play our game on offense and establish the running game, that should help neutralize their biggest defensive strength, which is the secondary. Overall, I think we match up well against BSU. I was nervous about this one until I looked into it. They’re a good team and our offense is going to have to come to play, but I think we match up well on offense. This is going to be a good early test of Bray’s defense. I expect a relatively low-scoring game with their strength being their defense and us needing to commit to the ground game to win.
hmm…looks like their strength is their passing game. So we get a pass rush, limit their catches in space, win more of the 50/50 plays(like Angry has said) by getting takeaways, and limiting the QB scrambles/designed draws from getting first downs seems to be the recipe to win. The Boise State run game won’t be a “test” for the beavers defense, it will test our pass defense primarily.
I’ll toss this out for the record:
Boise State–W
@ Fresno State–L
Montana State–W
SC–L, spoiled children could be imploding at this point but can’t count on it
@ Utah–L
@ Stanford–W, still rebuilding
WSU–W
Colorado–W
@UW–L, toss up
Cal–W
@ ASU–W
UO–W
Is anybody else being requested to submit a password when signing up for the CBS pool?
Had somebody on twitter asking for the pool password, but I thought it was set up without one and I dont know what the PW would even be.
And of course the CBS site has no user friendly way to resolve this.
No p/w to open the pool, but p/w needed for individual player to log in. Here’s the link I used:

Oregon are +17.5 underdogs? That seems like easy money.
Oregon is going to get CRUSHED!
Hope so. I actually think Oregon wins so +17.5 seems nuts.
To think Georgia doesn’t have depth and aren’t reloading with talent, that’s nuts. They’re competing with Alabama for supreme supremacy. GA has 14 True Seniors on the roster. 5 on defense, 1 kicker, 1 labeled as “SN”, the other 7 are on offense. Georgia is loaded with talent. My bias says +21 is more accurate. For wanting to back the pack, I would say +8 is more likely to happen.
I don’t doubt that Georgia has serious talent, but no team can shed 15 NFL players in one season and not go through major adjustment pains – especially to start the season. If nothing else there are communication/gelling issues that will take a few games to work through.
14 true seniors – point being that they were good enough not to redshirt but now have a lot of experience? And yet most of them weren’t good enough to start last year.. I don’t know man. As far as I’m concerned, until they’ve showed it on the field against real competition, talent is theoretical. Production tells the story, guarantee there are some busts and practice heroes in that crew.
Oregon has elite talent and Georgia’s DC. That’s all we really need to know. Oregon wins this game, most likely, but at worst they cover that ridiculous spread. I’ll shut down the site if I’m wrong on this one. I mean it is a no brainer.
Aren’t you forgetting how great that walk-on qb Stetson is though?
And the Ducks may be meeting their match for hubris and entitlement for a program…
Not very often the disciple defeats the mentor in the first meeting either. Which also points to a respectable loss but not a blowout for the Ducks. Smart won’t just keep pummeling and pile on like he has no class. I’m guessing it will be a 14-18 pt margin.
Shit I thought the games were straight up. Lame
Yeah I’d take that for sure. Looks like some classic SEC bias. I mean Oregon getting blown out is certainly in the cards but:
-UGA just lost an INSANE amount of NFL talent last year…15(!) total players drafted with an NFL record 5 (!!) players taken in the first round. That’s a whole lot of reloading. 15 players is almost 75% of your starters gone in one year…and obviously top tier starters
– Lanning knows their scheme; they don’t necessarily know his. That’s a big deal.
– Oregon’s always got the talent. Obviously last year GA had insane talent- don’t know if anyone knows if that’s true this year.
So yeah give me Oregon +17.5 all day.
When was the last time Oregon got blown out in an early-season nonconference game? It doesn’t happen often
The Beavs are -3.5 favorites? I’m surprised. Vegas is on to what I’m smoking.
I’m going 31-20, Beavs.
This feels like the Purdue game to me where it’s a pretty close matchup, but I think we have the edge in roster talent. Feels like a single digit margin game to me, something like 24-17 Beavs.
Last season, outside of Utah and Utah State Bowl game, If the Beavs defense allowed 30+ points in a game, they lost. They allow 29- they won.
Also, when the Beavs scored less than 14 pts in the first half, they lost the game. Every game they won, they scored 14+ points in the first half.
The only game they were behind at halftime and won was Utah. The only game they lost when they had the lead was Washington State. Utah halftime score was 24-14 Utah. Washington State halftime score was 10-3 OSU. Otherwise, if they had the lead at halftime, they won. They were behind at halftime, they lost.
Not sure what these stats mean, but it appears, the Beavs need to score more than 10 pts in the first half and have the lead at halftime to have the best chance of winning the game.
28-17 Beavs
Some good stuff by Carter (he’s overall excellent) for those of you who want opinions from people watching the Beavs every day. Mamma Machado does a decent job, too.
https://www.youtube.com/embed/78IM6jgG2YA
https://www.youtube.com/embed/2CH0UwonyX8
Listening to the Carter podcast I’m now even more lost as to what OSU’s wins and loses will be this year. :) I think it is fair to say that the Beavs are the hardest to predict team in part because of their hardest schedule.
Here’s the defensive take by Carter and Mama:
https://247sports.com/college/oregon-state/Article/Oregon-State-Beavers-football-2022-Dam-Podcast-season-preview-defense-192069965/
Oooops, takes ya to the same podcast as posted below by angry.
Never been impressed with him. Seems like he’s just regurgitating the same info everyone else is most the times. Then he’s called physical players more finesse types and vice versa where he’s just totally off. I know angie is just repeating what fans are saying in her lodge.
I listened to all of the offense podcast segment and about a 1/3 of the defensive segment. I am surprised they both think WR depth is questionable along with guys able to get separation? If the Beavers defense is that much improved in the secondary this fall, then wouldn’t that mean the WR and Nolan are getting different looks than last fall camp? So it makes sense the offense is behind the defense. Having one dominate the other in both scrimmages is not ideal, but splitting both 50/50 is ideal. The offense did that in the second scrimmage per coaches in a closed scrimmage.
If the QB(whoever it is) can’t throw accurate clean balls consistently, then yes, you will get more drops. If the WR is not confident or detail oriented e.g. looking where they are going to go before making the catch, then you will have more dropped passes and hurt WR’s. Nolan, if the starter, needs to throw the ball deep out of bounds and not try to force a pass if the receiver is covered on an out, go. Curl, or slant route. Also, how is the WR run blocking on the outside? These are my questions. Defense should be above average to sneaky good.
After listening to Carter and Angie talk about the defensive depth at LB, S, and CB is a common theme….depth! Not just warm bodies either. The two deep some places 3 deep has talent where they can start. GO BEAVS!
MBB loses final game of the Italian Job by 4 points. They went from playing tier 3 to tier 2 competition and couldn’t pull out the tier 2 win. I guess we know what league they’ll land in once the PAC-10 folds.
In all fairness, today’s opponent is a fully professional team
In all fairness, it doesn’t matter.
I felt like 85% over Covid so I hopped on my bike. Got 3 miles…lol.
BUT…I did notice a lot of leaves already changing…
BSU- W
FSU-W *
MSU- W
USC- W *
Utah-L *
Stanford- W
WSU- W
Colorado – W
UW- W *
Cal- W
ASU- W
Oregon- W *
* Pickem game could go either way
Of the 6 games that seem close to call, 4 have new coach/ new qb, FSU has new coach/experience QB,
Utah is steady and experienced.
OSU has a real shot with a tough schedule to make some noise nationally with lots of experience all over the place.
I think it will be Nolan’s year to excel and the Beav defense becomes top half of conference.
The Charlie Brown rule says we get enough succes to see it all collapse but the JS teams have been very resilient and I hope it goes next level this year and we don’t see the collapse.
Bray and Coach M will be key to the season with improved defense and another strong running attack.
Rewatch last year’s USC game and see how many times the Beavs were on the ropes early but the running game took over and USC wilted. I expect this often again but Nolan will be more effective in play action downfield. His jc Coach said he had the best touch on deep throws. I hope to see that this year as the game will slow down and his confidence will elevate his grasp of situations.
11-1 Regular season
12-1 Beat Utah to Win the conference
13-1 Beat Alabama in playoffs
14-1 Beat Ohio St in National Championship
Best season in OSU history!
Mock if you dare but it is still August, August is the Season of All things are possible! Go Beavs!!
I want a rematch with Notre Dame this year! That would really solidify the JS era! Can we go 3-0 in the modern era against Notre Dame and embarrass them on national TV once again? I’m not ready for Bama, GA, Auburn, Ohio State, Penn State, Michigan, etc. Give me Nebraska, Iowa State, Kansas State, West Virginia, UCF, BYU even. We need a top rated QB and a few play maker WR’s with swagger height, and speed to compete with “the big boys”. This season i would say Rose Bowl or another New Years Six would be a magical season. Alamo, Holiday, Vegas would be more probable.
I’ve thought OSU should seek a 3-game deal with ND, with one at Reser. “Let’s see who can take best of 5.”
I think we can take Penn State
Penn State would rather play with South Carolina
Boise St – W
@Fresno St – W
(N)Montanta St – W
USC – L (not in coaching disarray this season, loaded with talented free agents who’ve had 3 games to warm up, and a coach who can apparently lead. Beavs lose a close one. Damn.)
@Utah – L (tough crowd environment, physical, Utah coming home after a relaxing beat down of Sun Devils in Tempe, and Beavers may have hangover from “coulda won” the week before);
@Stanford – W (OSU’s fast, deep LB corp and experienced secondary pay off)
Washington St – W. Before going to Corvallis, Cougars host Oregon, Host CAL, play @ USC, then @ OSU…..That’s a pretty challenging month with a short turnaround from So Cal to Corvallis. Which doesn’t even have an airport.
Colorado – W. Corvallis is only 235 feet above sea level. Colorado, drunk on oxygen, stumble through a beat down. Colorado coach takes extra day to acclimate team, but players just drink more Block 15 beer.
BYE WEEK
@Washington – W – This environment will be challenging. UW will be fresh off CAL, OSU fresh off a bye week, and UW will be at ORE after hosting OSU, so hopefully looking ahead. UW lost by 3 to OSU last year, won prior two games by 6 points each. The series is trending towards competitive!
Cal – W
@Arizona St – W
Oregon – W
More so than games being “physical,” (Beavs can play physical now with a good OLine, deep RB room, deep LB corp) I think if Smith makes strategically bad calls (4th down gamble on wrong side of field, putting D in terrible position) it could affect in-game morale and carryover to subsequent game or game(s). Perhaps Bray’s energy can counteract that potential(?).
Besides seeing if Nolan can get more consistent at the deep ball, having him run more would be a real nice threat to take pressure off him, the run game, and the OLine. It would also likely build his confidence and help him loosen up on the deep passes. That seemed to be the case at USC where he had a few key runs and hit some key “deep” throws.
Gutting out a win @Utah could be important if Utah is a legitimate threat to take the league again.
Should be the most entertaining season since, well, last season, which featured some overdue, in-conference victories and an undefeated home record. This season I think a reasonable range to expect is 7-10 wins.
UW has a BYE week the same week the Beavs do. 10/22 UW plays CAL and then play the Beavs on 11/4.
Ahh, thx. Tough game.
It should be a really good low scoring game. Perfect for a Friday night Pac-12 after dark(should be Pac-12 IN THE DARK or Pac-12 at Dusk) after dark is called Dawn or Morning Lol
So much optimism going into to this years season. For those predicting wins in the 10 game range, just don’t see it. We finished 3-5 in last half of year which ended with a route by Utah state. Teams we beat last year were hollowed out shells of their usual selves. Stanford was playing their 4th team QB (walk-on) due to injury. UW and USC were their worst teams since who can remember. They will be significantly better. We have no speed on defense. The recruiting emphasis has been on length on defense, which is routinely mentioned as a critically important trait by coaching staff. They have been recruiting length and size and have been sacrificing speed. Did you watch this spring game? Those 6-5 250 OLB linebackers are not going to cover any one or catch any pac 12 level skill players in space. We know the ILB can’t cover anyone as evident from actual recent history. They are the opposite of our 2001 Fiesta Bowl team which had speed all over the field. We are big/lengthly and slow across the defensive line and linebackers. Against speedy receivers and (running backs coming out of the back field) we are going to get boat-raced like we did against WSU. Smith’s achilles has been his lack of recruiting/developing a QB and not understanding really anything about assembling a good defense (never has to-date). I think we will be brought down to earth and exposed early and often this year due to coaching staff deficiencies. Anticipating 3-5 wins as the realistic scenario, especially due to a more difficult non-conference schedule and improvement from others in the league.
As I recall that USC team included a number of players from a top 10 recruiting class. They weren’t lacking talent, but they were on an interim coach and a program in disarray. I don’t expect that this year.
UW is in a coaching transition. Could be an improvement, but the series has been competitive lately and I think continuity with Smith and OSU’s improved talent level and depth can result in a win there.
“We have no speed on defense.” We have no speed at the LB position, I can agree with that. The biggest weakness for this defense is the lack of coverage LB’s, a mismatch we have to live with. Bray will probably have Oladapo play a hybrid safety/LB role.
Keep in mind too that we have favorable matchups on defense, too, which compensates for the weaknesses. We match up well against teams like Washington, Cal, Stanford, Colorado, Boise State, Utah, and ASU. The teams we don’t match up well with are Oregon and Wazzu.
Fisher is fast
Not fast enough to cover a receiving back
If Bray has the D “attacking” and not “reacting”, how much of a problem will a mis-direction offensive attack present? Especially if a lack of speed cuts the chance of recovery?
Something to watch. I expect Beavs will get burned occasionally by misdirection; still think we’ll see an overall big step forward by the D. Bottom line……….Beavs D will be in top third of the PAC.
I see more big plays happening against this defense, but that’s the result if the defense makes big plays. Tibs was successful in limiting the big plays but his zone defenses never materialized to get coverage sacks.
So Banker defense? I don’t see that happening.
I think we are also assuming the O is as productive as last year, scores 30+ per game, while generally holding teams under 30. I don’t think anyone anticipates holding teams to low scores on a regular basis.
Meh. We should have been 9-3 last year if our HC didn’t “step on our own dicks” (haha new favorite phrase) and we have a better team this year. You guys give way too much credit to opponents. They have flaws, too. You act as if the Beavs have flaws but every opponent has a perfect team. Come on.
I believe people are skeptical to state the Beavers can actually play flawless most of the season. FYI, that will be the next step forward for this team; to be able to play mistake free. This team is better than last year defensively. Offense will require Chance Nolan to find his rhythm and be consistently good every game and not consistently sporadic. This team needs to find their MOJO for road games this year if they want to achieve a better bowl berth at the end of the season. First game against Boise State will set the tone for the season for home games and Fresno State will set the tone for road games. I’m personally glad this team starts at home first instead of being on the road like last season.
Lights are on at Reser again right now at 10 mins to 10 pm. Field is blacked out, but the lighting looks good for a night game. I hope ESPN will super impose the new side during broadcast at some point to show what it will look like on TV in the future and not just show the rendition drawings.
https://webcam.oregonstate.edu/reser
I think it would be sweet to use the construction platform for an upgraded fireworks display after scores. Make it look like its raining fire. Or drop a screen down and project fans or other messaging. Also – I’m guessing the visitors side will remain on that side of the field?
Strange, I have no taste today and feel worse than yesterday. This is disappointing. I thought I was over the hump and ready to enjoy a weekend.
My limited experience is that the symptoms don’t all happen at once. The come and go out of phase with each other. Don’t stress about it. It gets better.
This happened to me. I didn’t get brain fog until a week after I initially got Covid. Wait until the runny nose, stuffy nose, and congestion comes. Takes about 2-3 full weeks after initial symptoms/positive test occurs to start feeling normal. It will come and go.
Wow. This thing is more f’d than a Jack Colletto MILF.
Ya, it sucks if you get it, because you know you have to isolate(which you do when you get sick anyways), but the recovery seems to be longer than the flu or cold.
“Strange, I have no taste today…”
Mixing plaid with stripes?
Wearing Nike Duck gear?!?
Angry the bike ride probably set you back. I had foggy headache brain and no taste for at least two weeks. When started feeling better I went golfing… it kick my ass for 3 days afterwards. No taste is the weirdest thing… brush my teeth can’t taste the toothpaste. Coffee was like hot water. But any salt was immediately tasted and everything felt over salted. My buddy lost his smell a year ago and it still isn’t back.
I only got 3 miles, which is nothing on a bike, and I went so slow (8mph). I’ve just been so antsy to get outside. I hate my house/bed right now…I can’t imagine it did much damage given how easy I went. I felt pretty fine after. It was waking up this morning where things went South. That is awful about your buddy. Was that the first variant? I think this latest one should be lesser with those types of symptoms from what I read, but honestly I haven’t kept up, so maybe I’m wrong and that’s still a big risk.
Yeah he had Delta. Was almost hospitalized.
“I thought I was over the hump and ready to enjoy a weekend.”
Funny, this is exactly how I felt about Beaver football until I got pulled back in 2012.
Humps are a great way to enjoy the weekends! And weekdays!
PFF has Musgrave at #63 on their 2023 Draft Big Board. Dude has the physical tools to be a star and I’m glad he came back. I fully expect him to be a key part of the offense this year.
What do you mean come back? He wasn’t eligible. Hes a true junior this year.
Smith says Beavs will practice tomorrow at 7:30 at night to get the body clock set. Smart. Very smart.
My assumption is they will practice at night for most of next week as well.
Great. Smart. Wonder if Boise caught wind of it and will do the same, though. Maybe should have kept it under wraps.
SOP for most teams.
They may as well plan to practice at 7:30 for the entire season and then throughout the off season. Just get used to playing/practicing at night for the rest of your Beaver lifetime…
Haha! No kidding.
What is the Covid testing protocol for the team? If there’s any infection is there something in place to make sure it is caught immediately that day? Luck of the Beavs would be having their best team in 20 years and having Covid ruin it.
Beavs will fall behind early by double digits. Mount somewhat of a comeback, get the ball last with a chance to win and step on their dicks.
34-28 Boise State
Hope I’m wrong
No, you really don’t…
You have no rational for your opinion and prediction. I imagine it’s something Coach Riley did 15 years ago.
My prediction is Beavers win a close one because of the running game and a good enough passing attack. Defense will allow points, but with much better play than last year.
So you’re anticipating a game like Utah last year, but results in a loss. Yup, not buying this dumpster fire of an attempt at a hot take. Selling selling selling.
Going to copy and paste this from above.
You guys give way too much credit to opponents. They have flaws, too. You act as if the Beavs have flaws but every opponent has a perfect team.
I get we’re all traumatized as Beav fans. I get respecting opponents. I don’t get being afraid of every team and thinking we can’t hang and ultimately win games when we have a really good team.
Feel better Angry, feel better.
I got us at 9-3 and a dark horse chance to win the conference.
I think it goes without saying the Boise State game is important and expectations will drastically shift if we drop that one. But the game of the season for me is Fresno State. This team hasn’t won on the road against a Mountain West team since 2014 @ Hawaii. Losses to Colorado State, Nevada and Hawaii since then (not even including an additional home lose to Boise State in 2016). It’s not just another Mountain West team either, this is one of the best G5 teams in the country. They bring back one of the best QBs in the country. The Beavs just have not proved that they can consistently win on the road. The win @ USC last year was great. And then they followed it up with losses @ WSU, Cal, Colorado and Oregon.
For as high as I am on this team, I just don’t see how they’ll ever get over the hump until they start winning these tough road games consistently. If they go into Fresno and win and look good doing it, it doesn’t even have to be a convincing multiple scoring win, then all of a sudden I think the outlook and end goal for the season becomes much, much larger. The games will only get bigger from there and we will be set up headed 3-0 into a home game with USC. Win that, suddenly it’s a Top 25 showdown in Salt Lake City. When’s the last time the Beavers played in a game that big?
The elimination of divisions is slightly unfortunate timing, considering we know how to jockey with Utah, USC, UCLA all for a spot in the title game. The USC game feels like a must win to put ourselves in a position to make the conference championship.
Lose to Fresno, Utah, and probably drop another along the way between WSU, Washington, Oregon. I want to be proven wrong though. Consistent QB play and downfield passing and pass rush will get us to 8 or 9 wins.
I agree the Boise game is huge to Starr the season. I wish it was more of a cupcake just because it’s the first game but the continuity of the staff should help here. The Beavs have kept themselves in just about every game the last couple of years. I think being at home they’ll pull out a close one. If they do that then I think they’ll go on to beat Fresno if they lose I think it’s fairly likely they’ll lose to Fresno too.
Overall I think this team will be so much better under Bray just because it was so bad under Tibs. There are a lot of players poised for breakout seasons on defense and I think Bray understands his players strengths.
Smith presser. I guess Lolohea has been hurt which explains him not being on the 2 deep. Haven’t heard anything about Faamoe. He was a big time get with good size already. Kind of disappointing to not hear anything about him thus far.
https://youtu.be/BCKNt148-zE
Is Lolohea out long-term?
Kind of sounds like one of those things where he’s out indefinitely and then it ends up being half or the full season. Hopefully that’s not the case tho. If it is that’s a big blow I thought he could have a breakout season. Possible starter but definitely a rotation player.
That sucks. He’s critical.
How much better will the defense be if they can stop 50% more of the 3rd and long plays? Instead of giving up 15 yds on every 3rd & 8, they force a punt. That one area alone creates massive improvement for team morale, confidence, momentum and psyche. Bray has a lot of mentors going back to DE to seek out sound strategic options and I expect a quick improvement from the D.
Totally.
Just realized we wont have Champ returning kickoffs this year.
Not that he did anything terribly negative, but I feel like this team hasnt had a kickoff return past the 25 in 2 years. Guys wasnt big enough to break an arm tackle
Champ was basically the personification of taking a knee.
Who will be on returns? I vote for Irish and Gould. Though we have a ton of viable weapons.
He tried to run it out too often imo. Would usually get tackled before the 25… whoever we get back there will be an upgrade
I hadn’t looked in ages (since 5mil I think), but AB now has 8.3mil views all time. I bet we hit 9mil this football season given we’re going to the Natty.
REMINDER:
Thanks to NiceB for setting up the CBS pool again, looks like we have about 25 players registered.
FIRST GAME BEGINS IN ABOUT 1 HOUR, it’s TPB vs Northwestern in Ireland.
Hey there…I was able to access last year’s pool, and I play all sorts of CBS fantasy, but the only way I can “enter” is with a pool password. I tried the link you listed halfway above, but just took me to the pool password page. Any ideas?
For me, there is a list in the top right corner which shows the pool for various years. I click the 2022 and it works. That is after I give my password, no pool p/w required.
Thanks for sending the reminder OOB. I didnt even realize Nebraska played today rather than next weekend.
And for anybody having issues with the CBS site, wrlcome to the club. Its always glitchy, especially early in the season. Another reason i dont dare bring money into the equation.
Even as the pool manager, many of the links i try when managing the pool end up returning error codes or try again later notices.
Hope everybody got their week 1 picks in, but if you didnt, youre only down 1 game and have time to get the rest in.
Anyone know? https://twitter.com/angrybeavs/status/1563518427582836736
Husker defense is suspect and looks like they took pages out of Tibs’ playbook. I wish I would have taken Northwestern in the spread pool.
I’ll take everyone against Nebraska. Frost is so bad.
So is Frost Nebraska’s version of GA? Riley successor who comes in with a strong track record, expected to be the savior, and ends up just pooping the bed?
Nebraska hasn’t put on their big boy pants nor their ‘A’ game.
They put on their padded bras instead.
NW coach eschews the punt at his own 38, goes on to fashion a 3 pt lead at halftime………TPB’s
Frost is such a Neanderthal.
Jonathan Smith level stupidity on the onside kick.
That call might have lost them the game
Hence the smith level stupidity.
Nebraska hasn’t scored since and now down by 3. Just such a momentum killer. How many two point conversions will smith try next weekend?
Why are all the Nebraska players wearing padded bras? Solid D cups.
Brock Huard has to be the most bored-sounding color commentator on primetime football.
ILB isaiah Chisom is supposed to announce today. Top 5 of Fresno, Cal, USC, Utah and the Beavs.
Someone had a crystal ball for us, don’t remember who
Ya its the sole crystal ball. I think maybe Angie.
Greg biggins did as well. Smith with the dam right so timing makes sense.
Looks like Chisom will be a Beav.
https://247sports.com/player/isaiah-chisom-46132574/
Good get. Looks like another high 3-star or even a low 4 based on the film.
https://n.rivals.com/content/prospects/2023/isaiah-chisom-280344
Frost fired after this game?
Nah, they don’t gain anything by finishing the season with an interim coach. He’s gone at the end of this year, though.
Per Neb boards Frost buyout drops from $15mil to 7.5 as of Oct 1st. Hmmmm
So Frost will be updating his resume on Oct 2nd…
Right after they lose to Indiana on Oct 1st. Especially if they get smoked/boat raced out of Memorial Stadium against Oklahoma. “Thanks for what you did for us as a player Frost, but as a coach, your legacy is tarnished at Nebraska.
Watched the game with my Nebraska buddies. It baffles me how little they use the outside run/screen game, which was what made Frost so good at Oregon. Clearly Nebraska had the speed and size advantage on the edge.
Their offense was one dimensional and entirely dependent on the QB, so Frosty the Cornman had to bring in an actual OC this year to keep his job. Guy was at Pitt the last few years. He’s supposed to be very smart with a high IQ, but when he speaks he sounds like a total dumb ass and his coaching decisions seem to prove that point.
Big Red Overreaction should be solid gold this afternoon.
Frost’s ability to play in and lose close games is uncanny. I think it’s 22 of his 30 losses have been by one score.
Had to head over to husker board to soak in the schadenfreude, I missed the game but there was lots of hand wringing over an onside kick. #Glorious
See above ^ regarding the onside kick.
A friend sent me a stat that would say Frost would have to win 50 straight games to get to where Bo Palini was when they shitcanned him LOL.
Lol. I remember writing at the time I thought Pelini was a good coach and going another direction was a mistake for them.
Jim Mora Jr now coaching UConn doing what we couldn’t do, beating Utah State.
You really think this is an any way the same thing?
Um I don’t follow Utah state much so don’t know what they lost but UConn was really bad defensively last year. Guess Utah state needs to bring in the backup to light em up.
Chisom is a Beav! Best Mlb I’ve seen Beavs ever land. Recruiting is really really good this year, wow.
Composite ratings need to get with it and update a few of these players and increase the Beavers’ recruiting rankings. This is a top 35 class this year.
Better than Mascarenas?
Or Gordon, Speights, Roberts?
I honestly think so yes. All were really good but Chisom has more speed and same hitting/tackling
Could Dennis Erickson potentially be a secret recruiting weapon for us? JS supposedly talks with him frequently and DE would have had all sorts of experience with quid pro quo recruiting at Miami.
Daschel appears to have been following AB; predicts 8-4 with a chance at 10-2.
He says “Fresno State is the toughest road game of the year”………hard to argue with that.
Intercepted text:
Hey Mike…. How much do those POD thingies cost to rent? Scott
Ah, the deep pass on a rope. How nice it would be to see this happen this season.
Alabama St. Can get a QB who can throw a deep ball, but apparently we can’t?
https://twitter.com/SportsCenter/status/1563709159781982208?t=jFs0Sh99vajPx_cAloi2qg&s=19
I thought Gulbranson was supposed to have a pretty live arm?
Gulbranson can make that throw
What we need is a QB who can throw a 60 yard bomb on an arc
He does, but lack of experience, and innaccuracy issues are what’s holding him back.
Apparently he’s been throwing lots of picks.
Might be the funniest athlete I’ve seen since Pankey.
Like he was trying to LOOK like he was trying, but really wanted no part of contact…
He had to be thinking, “how can I salvage my lack of speed? Flail my arms like a windmill!”
Funniest Beav Athletes. Mine are:
1. Pankey
2. Ruben Robinson
3. Cade Cowdin
4. Inspector Clouseau (can’t remember the guy’s name, but a tiny white walk-on DB who Jack called Inspector Clouseau). GA era.
5. Krebs Brothers
-Scrambling Derek Anderson
-Darrell Garretson trying to pass. Didn’t he end a game with like 30 yards on 20+ attempts once?
Flailbacker U
Funny side note, Pankey and Hardin just posted in a Fishing FB page I’m on. Small Town.
Anyone remember the name of Inspector Clouseau, the small little white CB from around 2014 or so? GA era walk on.
I could’ve sworn Inspector Clouseau was a walk-on LB named “Henry” or something.
https://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/2015/12/david_henry_copes_with_the_end.html
David Henry?
That sounds right! Maybe he was a LB and not a DB. I think he made an INT on defense in camp film, and that probably tricked my memory into thinking he was a CB.
https://osubeavers.com/sports/football/roster/david-henry/2846
A bit on Bray:
https://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/2022/08/bill-oram-trent-brays-rise-at-oregon-state-is-a-great-story-will-this-be-a-great-defense.html?outputType=amp
I didn’t know Mark Banker was back in Corvallis. And he’s Bray next door neighbor. I hope Bray doesn’t take advice from him.
he’s Bray next door neighbor
Oh god…
Let’s hope if he asks Banker for advice, he is wise enough to do the opposite of what Banker says…
Ahhh the Costanza method. I love it!
TPB
A few things I’d like to see from the team this year aside from the obvious like wins etc
1. Pooch punts from the QB. With the way Smith likes to go for it it should be very effective. Nolan did it in the USC game and landed it at the 5. Its great because you don’t risk any return, and you can line up yo go for it and if the play isn’t there check to it.
2. More check downs from Nolan. Way too often Lowe would be wide open in the flat for an easy first down and instead Nolan would force it elsewhere.
3. More FB. Whether it’s Colleto or Horton or whoever I think it fits into the beavers playing style and teams aren’t used to defending it anymore.
4. More smoke routes/ WR screens. Harrison had some good success with this but they didn’t run much of these. It can be really easy yards and stretches the defense sideline to sideline.
5. More attempts at stripping the ball. Obviously want to make the tackle first but when he’s wrapped up by another player go gor the ball and make a game changing turnover. Tago and Taumolau were the last players that I’ve seen do this regularly and it worked.
6. When you get a chance at an interception, CATCH IT! I can’t remember how many times I saw a dropped pick only to see the opponent score on that drive (after picking up a 3rd and 17).
I think Wright is poised for a breakout season. He’s probably the best at making plays on the ball and could lead the team in picks. We haven’t had anyone that has forces lots of turnovers since chappell but his were mostly hard hits causing fumbles.
We haven’t had a safety who made plays to imtercept the ball since Al Afalava, Mitch Meeuwsen, Sabby Piscitelli, and Greg Laybourn. We need Jayden to step up at safety this season.
Reports are that Oladapo has been tearing up in camp, and Julian really seemed to be turning into a playmaker before his injury last year. Between the three of them hopefully they can start getting some turnovers.
Former Duck QB Akili Smith’s kid started as QB this season down in California. Looks like he has his dad’s athletic ability. Bet he’s a shoe in for Oregon, but would be nice to still go after him.
https://twitter.com/Akilismithjr/status/1563918042806947840?t=EnaVUsgiKgs2xENMb58qUg&s=19
So if you put a 100 on the Beavs to win more games predicted by Vegas what is the payout? I don’t really bet so I’m not sure I understand.
Depends on the odds
O/U is 5.5 wins. Over pays -160. $100 bet pays 162.50 or 62.50 winnings. Under pays +130 so 100 bet wins 230 or 130 in winnings. There’s a formula based on win probability that you can google to figure it out. Vegas sharks would take the under based on payout and perception the Beavs suck and the fact the schedule is so difficult.
Thanks. I thought it would be more since it was a whole season bet.
5.5?
All I’ve seen is 6.5 and even money at Bet MGM (ie: a $100 bet pays back $100+100= $200)
That’s easy money! may need to run to Iowa on Saturday. ;)
MGM actually has this at Over 6.5 at +105 meaning $50 bet = $102.50 payout or $52.5 winnings.
Oregon State winning the Pac-12 Championship is +3300 meaning $10 bet = $340 payout or $330 winnings.
Nick Daschel of the Oregonian wrote a piece last Friday and at the end of the article he had the following to say:
“Acclimating to Reser renovations: Oregon State has held several practices this month in Reser Stadium, which is undergoing a $161 million remodel to its west side. For the 2022 season, fans will be seated on the east side, plus end zones as the west side is under construction.
Smith said there have been some adjustments. The lighting is a little different, which he says is a factor for those catching kickoffs and punts. With the old west grandstands gone, Smith said wind is slightly different. Coaches will call games from a different vantage point, as the temporary press box is decidedly lower than the previous Reser location.”
https://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/2022/08/oregon-state-notebook-wait-until-monday-for-starting-qb-announcement-alton-julian-getting-closer-to-action.html
From the sounds of it, With the Beavers being able to practice at night and seeing how the lights and vantage points in the press box are different than in the past, may give us a bit of an edge and home field advantage. Then again, Boise State hasn’t played in Reser since 2016, so it will be a new experience for Boise State. Also, Hawaii is renovating their stadium currently and got blown out of their own stadium. Homefield advantage will be a crowd of around 26,000 mostly all on the East side and the endzones. Will be nice to see the East side be full for once.
Lots of cheap tickets still available, in the upper levels especially. Not a good sign theyre not selling for more given the small size of the stadium and opening day.
https://seatgeek.com/boise-state-broncos-at-oregon-state-beavers-football-tickets/ncaa-football/2022-09-03-7-30-pm/5601302
I wonder what hapoens this year when we do that Ooooo…..Ssssss….Uuuuuu chant. Do fans drop the U since we have nobody sitting over there?
Or does everybody chant all 3 from every side? Hope its the latter and that carries over after Reser is complete. I know that always bugged Jack and it bugs me too.
Aren’t those all resell tickets? Not sure why scalpers even try to make money off the Beavs.
Beavs website says there are 45 seats left.
Yes, they’re resell, but i dont consider those full seats when theyre selling for less than box office prices and there are large quantities still available.
My guess is theyre season ticket holders who paid a little less up front so they can afford to take the hit.
But where are all the Boise and OSU fans? Our stadium is small and this is one of the better week 1 matchups in the country.
I asked my dad that very question, his response, “We will see when we get there.” My guess is the normal fans on the East side will yell the “O” the endzone fans will yell the “S” and the West side people moved to the East side will yell the “U”. Then again, I would love the whole stadium to chant “OOOOO” “SSSSS” “UUUUUU” Would love to do this for 3rd down as well instead of the chainsaw. Chainsaw was cool at first, but now it’s become a curse on 3rd down it seems.
Chainsaw = cringe-worthy
I’ve said for years it sounds like a dying cow
They need to ditch the intro from the overplayed Back in Black to Jackyll’s “The Lumberjack”
What’s the point of a chainsaw if you don’t stop anyone on a third and a “fill in the blank “
Fresno State looks more like a loss every day. I didn’t realize how much they are returning on both sides of the ball.
Look at our Seniors and Juniors/RS-Juniors returning this season. We’re deeper at almost all positions than we ever have been. The only thing the Beavs lack is depth on DL if players get injured and a proven experienced possession WR with a QB who can throw them the ball accurately(Think Mike Hass, James Rodgers, Sammie Straughter, etc). There is a mix of youth and experience at the WR and DL position. Otherwise, everywhere else is experienced starters. I love the rotation idea where the 2-3 deep get chances to gain experience throughout the season. It will keep players rested(especially on defense), show recruits they will get playing time, even if they aren’t listed as the “starter” on the official depth chart, and lastly, it allows the younger players to gain the needed experience to replace the seniors that will graduate or those choosing to enter the NFL Draft after the season.
Compare the depth charts between the two teams and you’ll see that they have better starters at most skilled positions on offense and defense. They beat opponents by forcing defenses to run sideline-to-sideline for 60 minutes. Watching the Beavers try to defend the catch-and-run offense through the years has been infuriating and we don’t have the speed at LB to do it yet.
It’s certainly winnable. We have the decisive advantage on the lines. Strategy should be to control the clock and keep the ball out of Haener’s hands.
Their defense is bad, though. Returning starters is a negative if they aren’t good.
It’s not going to be an easy game, but declaring it a loss right now is overreacting. Let’s wait and see how we show up against the Smurfs.
Stats disagree. Good run defense last year, with an inexperienced secondary that outperformed expectations. Only question mark is their nickelback who’s out for the first six games.
“Fresno State looks more like a loss every day” didn’t say it is a loss lmao, quit overreacting
Look at the results game by game. Stopping Hawaii, SJSU, and New Mexico isn’t that hard. They did well against the MWC bottom feeders, but struggled against the rest. They allowed 32 ppg against the stronger half of their schedule. That’s higher than what the Beavs allowed against the toughest half of their schedule last year (28 ppg).
Adjusting for competition, their defense was probably about as good as ours last year, maybe a little worse.
Again, it is all about matchups. We match up well against them on both lines. We will probably stop their run game, they can’t stop ours. We will probably get more pressure on Haener, than they can pressure Nolan.
Their corners are better than our receivers, and their receivers are a bad matchup for our LB’s and safeties. Pretty simple. It will be a game of not getting behind the chains, draining the clock, and forcing a timely turnover.
Just watched a video of Utah State QB first career pass, you guessed it, a 62-yard TD against the Beavers in the bowl game, #3 trailing pinwheeling and flailing in pursuit….and it was a deep pass, not all YAC….
Haha…
Depth chart is out and Gebbia OR Gulbranson as backup which leaves Nolan as the starter. Other positions are as expected.
https://twitter.com/b_slaught/status/1564325100295692288?t=mYzwUePxpxiOYnAKuMw68A&s=19
We like our tiny kickoff returners. Went from a 140lb guy to a 150 lb guy in Bolden. Martinez as an “OR” on KR is unexpected.
I like Gould as a punt returner, but Irish has speed both should be good options back there.
Funny how Daschel didnt have Lindsey in the 2 deep, but here he’s a starter.
What’s the story on Lolohea? Heard he’s injured but any idea how bad it is?
“The only players among those potentially in the two-deep for Boise State who won’t play are defensive end Ryan Franke and defensive lineman Sione Lolohea. Franke is out for the season with a knee injury, while an unspecified injury caused Lolohea to miss most of the August practices.”

Fenwick 1A and Lowe 1B is interesting to me. Probably doesn’t mean that much based on depth chart vs. snap count last year, though.
Julian must still be recovering from his injury. Otherwise burying the guy who was our best all-around defensive player last year on the depth chart like that is a huge mistake.
Martinez as a possible KR also interesting.
Yeah some of these decisions are puzzling. Starting to feel like BSU will be a loss just to not having sorted out the best personnel. Hopefully they’re just f’ing with BSU.
The way I view this depth chart on defense and WR is rotations. If you notice, this is basically a 3 deep depth chart of players who will play or have the chance to play. It’s sending a message to Boise State of, “We have depth and we are coming to play, win, and win big.” Some of the return players may be there because they have better smarts of fair catch, let the ball go, or are patient enough to let the blockers set up for the return.
To your point, and say what you will about champ returning kicks last year, but I can’t recall a time where I was yelling at the tv asking Flemings what the hell he was doing.
There’s a lot more to being the return man than being the fastest man on the roster.
Which are puzzling?
I don’t recall anyone close to Lowe’s ability as a 3rd down back. I think that is what the OR is for. Lowe going to sub in on 3rd and long all the time, run with the 2 minute offense, and play a lot of time as the full time RB when the ground game stagnates. It seems to me like the workhorse role is fairly up in the air still. Maybe Fenwick found another gear but he struck me as JAG last year. Hope he took a big jump or Martinez is the real deal and takes that role over.
Julian HAS to be injury related. Guy will be the leader on D by example, decision making, open field tackles. I think he could really be the one to set the tone for the D.
Ha, UNLV has upped the turnover gimmick with a Turnover Slot Machine. I actually like it. Although the massive empty stadium doesn’t help.

So is it better to have continuity or impact newcomers? This feels like a very similar team to the one we fielded last year because so many of the new starters are guys that saw significant playing time last year. Chatfield is really the only new guy expected to make much of a difference.
Hopefully it’s a good sign that the highly talented signees are buried behind more experienced guys and will play, but deeper in the rotation.
Continuity of experienced players, especially with a changed/revamped defensive scheme. LB’s will understand the assignments best because they have been working with Coach Bray the last 1-5 years. they will be the leaders of the defense. Bring back Linebacker U and keep RB U.
Having Hodgins back on the DL is a bit like having an impact newcomer
No real surprises on the depth chart. Nearly every starter has started a game before. I think only Fenwick and Fuaga haven’t. So tons of experience. I would expect their games to be sharper than a normal start of the year. Meaning few procedural penalties.
Fuaga started last year.
Coach Smith press conference

Havent heard much about Michael Erhart since he joined the team a few years back. He and Franke were supposed to be the main LBs out of their class, recruited by Bray.
I know Franke is injured, but has Erhart ever played for OSU? Looks like he’s still on the roster
It’s bizarre nobody knows the protocols in place to deal with any covid outbreak. Even asked Canzano on Twitter. Given that it’s on nobody’s mind, I bet we see entire teams go down with Covid…
Its now treated as any other illness. Not life threatening to athletes anymore.
Yeah but it’s threatening to fielding a team and not having to forfeit. There should be something in place to catch it early, and it sounds like there’s not.
What’s the protocol if the whole team comes down with food poisoning from team meals the day of the game? There is no catching covid early because you need to have symptoms before testing unless you’re talking about catching those who may be asymptomatic….
I thought I read that the CDC ditched social distancing and quarantine requirements a few weeks ago?
It’s doesnt seem to be a thing anymore. No testing protocols, no quarantine, no social distancing.
I’d imaging it’s going to be treated on a case by case basis. If a player gets it, they likely will have to decide for themselves if they are going to not only test, but also sit out.
And teammates are going to have to decide if they want to sit out if they see an ill teammate crossing their path in practice. Similar to the flu in the past, players often play through it and nobody forces them to sit out.
How’s your covid going, by the way?
By simply “following the data” the real concern should be that so many athletes were forced to vaccinate last year and now they are more likely to have issues either new infection or vaccine related problems.
I know it is a can or worms no one wants to talk about but the evidence is mounting form Israel, Germany, Australia and UK that the vaccine push has been filled with unforeseen consequences.
What vaccine related problems are athletes having?
It’s shrinking their penix
If my memory is correct, Ohio Beav talks out his ass, but I may be wrong and he has scientific evidence about said athletes.
Heart inflammation/tissue scarring. It’s particularly prevalent in male athletes who take steroids.
Not a surprise; we’re all given the disclaimer prior to receiving the shot
OR, just get the infection and have a higher risk of myocarditis (inflammation). No surprises, indeed.
Cool. I hope this is the case. I’m finally over the hump for sure. Was out for an 8mile ride yesterday and will do over 10 today in a bit. Still have congestion in my chest, but I’m mostly just ignoring that. Smell and taste did come back already, though both are muted, but the fact they’re back makes me think at some point they will come back entirely. Thanks for asking!
Here’s how Boise State is handling Covid now:
“Players or coaches will be tested if they become symptomatic, a spokesperson for Boise State confirmed to the Idaho Statesman. If they test positive, they’ll be isolated and the university with follow guidelines set by Central District Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention….Players or coaches who were potentially exposed to the virus will be asked to wear a mask for five days and will be tested if they become symptomatic.”
https://www.idahostatesman.com/sports/college/mountain-west/boise-state-university/boise-state-football/article264615981.html
Seems like a reasonable course of action. Seems strange OSU doesn’t have a stated policy given the last two years of hysteria on both sides of the issue.
FWIW beans were the only team in conference to play all their games Covid year so hopefully they’re still diligent.
The bean is the state animal of Oregon…
ESPN has an article on the expected rise of USC. Lot of fluff, but I didn’t realize that USC has 40 new players the weren’t on the roster last year. Not sure how many are transfers but that seems extraordinarily high and should be to the Beavs advantage for an early season matchup before they gel as a team…
USC will be tough. They got the right transfers in. QB, RB, WR and head coach/new offense. Replaced the positions where they had the most issues or loss from the draft. They will be much better than they were last year.
Walk on QB Jake Blair has transferred out of OSU
As has Logan Horton
Wonder if it’s a situation where both were holding out for a scholarship at the end of camp but somone else got it? This is usually around the time of year when those announcements are made.
Also, we’re about a month away from fall term enrollment to close, so could see the potential for some transfer activity over the next few weeks
I know they had player coach interviews about where they stood in the program so this is to be expected. I think Dom is the better walk on anyways. Horton would’ve been nice to keep for fullback packages but they’ll probably just use colletto and then overman or another TE after he’s gone.
Who else is leaving, seems like you are in the know. Current student?
I’m not but gobeavs might be. Not sure who you were asking.
I am got 3 years left pretty good buddies with horton

I’m doing some writing…looking for a baseball term for a team that is in 1st place the entire season. Is it wire to wire? That doesn’t seem right…can’t think of the term. Covid fog!
“Sideline to sideline?” No…
“soup to nuts?”
Baseline to baseline?
I think it is wire-to-wire….
Is it? Doesn’t seem right, but if it is, it is!
People love to mix sports metaphors anyway…football offenses sometimes go for “the home run play!” What?!?
Not as good as baseball used to be with phrases like “A grounder with eyes!” or “He dropped in a dying quail for the hit!”
It is “Wire to wire”. As in “The 1990 Cincinnati Reds held first place from start to finish?becoming one of only three wire-to-wire champions in major league history.”
Mitch to Mitch?..
Actually wire-to-wire may be horse racing. I had COVID too….

I’m glad to see Anderson still on the team. He adds some solid depth and has a very high motor. I rewatched the usc game and he was the one constantly working to get pressure a lot of the time.
Coach smith said that sione is out a couple of weeks so hopefully he’ll be good to go by the USC game.
A lot of my prediction was based around Julian returning and Smith having the right players on the field. Seems like neither will happen, so I’m way less bullish and BSU now a possible loss.
Per Daschel
ALTON JULIAN STATUS
Smith said the 6-foot-2 junior safety, who hasn’t played since October after tearing an ACL in his knee, is expected to be cleared to play Saturday. Smith wasn’t certain if Julian would play.
“Let’s face it, he’s missed a lot of time. If we feel like he’s ready and cleared, there’s a potential,” Smith said.
https://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/2022/08/oregon-state-notebook-deshaun-fenwick-trey-lowe-win-the-battle-for-running-back-playing-time.html
Stop it… if they go 5-7 you got yourself covered. If they go 8-4, you can say I told you so. Weak
I predict 8+ wins, and if everything doesn’t go just right, 5 wins. I’m headed to Spirit Mountain to prove my point.
Julian is returning. Who else are the wrong guys?
Martinez should probably be the starting RB. Julian is the key, though. If he’s not an every down player it will cost us a win or two, and based on Smith’s comments, he won’t be for game 1. It also sounds like this could linger well into the season.
Yes I’d expect it to linger. ACL often takes 12+ months to reach full potential. No surprise.
Why would you start a freshman running back game 1 when you have a whole stable of them with experience and talent? Smith has the luxury of easing him into playing D1 and to see how he reacts. I think he’s talented enough to start but freshman make mistakes and none of us have any reason to think he should be the starter aside from HIGHLIGHTS and some camp reports.
As for Julian Smith expects him to be cleared to play but he just hasn’t practiced much at all. I suspect Smith just wants to be cautious and not use Julian unless he has to.
Besides Fenwick had a great YPC last year so I’m eager to see what he can do with more touches. Fenwick reminds me of Baylor waiting in the wings of Jefferson, biding his time to be the workhorse.
So who knows, maybe Fenwick will be the guy this year and maybe Martinez will share the reps with next year he will take the reigns completely.
I’m not worried at all about the running back position and I don’t think you all should be either. It’s one of the deepest positions on the team loaded with talent and I don’t think it really matters who gets to carry the ball, they will have success behind this offensive line.
I like Fenwick and everyone else back there. Julian is the bigger issue. I was basing a lot of my feeling of the D around him returning. Should be an improved D still, but this is definitely disappointing.
I understand the move of putting Olidapo ahead of Julian. Practice means a lot, especially coming off an injury. I guarantee, if Isaac Hodgins didn’t have a full fall camp to get back into the swing of playing, he wouldn’t be a starter either. I feel Julian will start for sure against USC. Winning the conference is the goal this year. Winning the Non-Conference games, especially the home opener is crucial for the players to get that loss at the end of last season(monkey off their back so to speak), but ultimately, the conference wins matter more to get to the Rose Bowl.
Olidapo has put in the work and has been practicing with the 1’s all fall camp. This is where continuity matters with knowing weaknesses and strengths to scheme. If Julian hasn’t been practicing, then the coaches don’t have a body of work to scheme/game plan for Julian to be in the game.
Or, this depth chart is to mess with Boise State to plan against a 3-4, but the team rolls out with a 4-3, 3-3-5(Nickel). Last 5 seasons has been primarily 3-4 with Dime coverages for every play.
Still have grant and oladipo as the safeties. Grant is better as a nickel but oladapo is a stud. Should be very good in the secondary even if Julian is slow to get involved the first couple of weeks
Time for Arnold and Robinson to step up
Worth mentioning that Martinez looked terrible in the spring game. Tentative and slow. Hopefully it’s more a mental / experience issue than a physical one, but it sure seems like the job was his to lose and he lost it.
I think one of Daschel’s reports said Smith rarely calls out players but said Olidapo had an outstanding camp. Julian would be great, but doesn’t make sense to throw in with minimal practices yet
The bright side is we could be looking at a pairing of Oladapo AND Julian in the next few weeks.
When did Quizz finally get his start at RB his true Freshman year?
Here are the game logs from 2008 from team and Quizz. Quizz didn’t get the job until 4th game against USC. Who is our 4th game this season? USC…hmmm….Pitre and Smith are easing Damien Martinez into the rotation. Is he also known for not fumbling like Quizz was?

After the Penn State game.
Okay, but you complain about the right players on the field every single season. And my problem with that is, you aren’t a coach. Does that mean we should have blind faith in the coaching staff at all times? Probably not. But just because YOU think players should be out there that aren’t and vice versa is not 100% correct and does not directly impact wins and losses. You aren’t practicing with these guys, you don’t see their improvement all off-season, you don’t talk to them and watch film with them. I remember how high you were on Gebbia, even comparing him to Aaron Rodgers arm talent. Funny how you’ve gone quiet on that now that he’s lost the job in consecutive seasons. Not trying to start a fight here, I just think your constant criticism of the staff is a little tiring and a cop out and cheap way to be, well, angry.
There is parody in College Football. This is the healthiest team Oregon State has put together in a decade or more. 3 guys are out. 1 out for the season and 2 are projected to be cleared and playing in 1-2 weeks. (Franke, Sione, Julian). Boise State has no injuries reported. They are 100% healthy.
I remember when there was a time pre-season there were at least 1-2 OL every year who had some injury or another. As well as DL made that list as well. We have talked and talked and talked about speculations. Now it’s time to sit back and wait 4 more days to see who this team will be this season. I would be shocked if the Beavs roll on Boise State and have less than 5 penalties total for the game.
Banker’s D was a parody of college football…Andersen’s teams were a parody of college football. I’m tired of parody and agree with Fisher that its time to change the narrative (long a call on this site).
Smith on the other hand is steadily building talent and depth such that the Beavers should be consistently competitive and entertaining. I still maintain he needs to get better at decision making so he doesn’t put his own team in a hole, potentially impact morale, and cost the team two wins per year.
To me deshaun Fenwick did excellent in the games he started in last year. If you combine that with him working on his burst of speed and lateral quickness I think he will be scary good this year. If he also is a better pass catcher and still the great blocker he was last year you can to do a lot of things on first and second down with him and involve him with pass plays which I think makes the offense scary to play against. We very much under value how good these two running backs will be with the pass game.
Trey Lowe will also be excellent he has put on weight worked on blocking better and fighting through contact. He is so so quick and will be such a good weapon to add with fenwick.
Is Martinez good? I’m sure he is!! He’s a true freshman vying for a starting position. Is he right where he should be yeah most likely.
Complaining that a true freshman isn’t starting and two running backs who did great when they played last year and improved upon their weaknesses, they most definitely deserve to start at this point.
I know I sound pessimistic, but I’m thinking 5 wins (MSU, WSU, CU, Cal plus one from BSU, ASU or Stanford). A lot of the Beavs winning 7 to 9 games depends on how much of jump Nolan takes over last year – and I just don’t know what to think at this point. The switch to Bray’s more aggressive D is the other big factor.
I don’t think we should be expecting a huge leap from Nolan. Reading between the lines of JS’s statements, they’re going with Nolan because he’s a good game manager and we’re going to be leaning on the running game again this year. I haven’t seen any comments about “Chance has gotten better at x”
“But at the end of the day, it felt like Chance gives us the best chance to score the most points and eliminate negative plays.”
“The fifth-year head coach said Nolan demonstrated comfort in the offense, showed improved accuracy and did a good job taking care of the football throughout fall camp.”
Then again, Nolan completely defied the expectations last year, so who knows? I’ll end with a paraphrasing of the man himself:
“Oregon State struggled at times throwing the ball down the field last season. Nolan said improving the consistency and accuracy of those throws was one of his primary goals in the offseason and he believes that has improved so far this fall.”
My optimism is solely on defense and how Trent Bray is instilling aggression and attack vs react and keep everything in front of you. Bray wants defense to fly around and be/play fast. With that said, the offense doesn’t worry me so much because they know Nolan’s strengths and should have had an entire offseason to scheme/game plan around the quick slant routes and less on the deep out routes. Think “Two Minute Drill”, but our normal offense.
What I am curious to see this year is if Nolan will check off plays and audible based on the package/formation they are in at that moment. Say they are in a 3 wide set, 1 TE and single RB. It’s 2nd down and 5 and the play called is a pass play, but the defense is spread out and a run play would give us a 3rd and 2 or a potential first down. Does Nolan have the ability to audible into a run or vise versa into a pass depending upon the look of the defense? This also might be why they are going with Nolan because he has had a full year with the offensive playbook and should be the healthiest and most experienced with it. Also, with the given QB depth, is he given more QB design runs or speed option plays? We will find out on Saturday, but let’s hope we don’t get vanilla offense.
First paragraph sums up my feelings.
I do think Nolan’s familiarity with the team/playbook could result in very good check-down decisions. Gotta wonder, though, if opponents will gain a little from all the film available on him.
The film last year will show he was inconsistent on the road, his tendencies of not checking down, ability to run when he decides to run(but not designed runs), will hand the ball off on read option plays instead of keeping the ball, is inaccurate on deep balls, etc. Things I hope he has fixed with Coach Smith harping the word “consistent” when it comes to practices and fall camp. Those who practice inconsistently seem to not be the players who will see game time. Those who work on being consistent in their play will be rewarded with game time. Aidan Chiles said the same thing in an interview that BeavRecruiting put out last week I think on Twitter. Aidan gave the advice to future recruits to “remain consistent and be consistent (when it comes to practices and game play)”. If a WR is consistently sporadic in dropping balls like last season, well, next man up who is consistent.
There’s no reason to think he won’t check out of plays as he did it fairly often last year. That is definitely an area that should improve naturally with experience and familiarity in the system.
OOB I was thinking about the extra tape on him too. Often times you see a qb breakout and then the next season struggle because teams have faced him before, have more tape to dissect, and have had a year to game plan for them. No else has seemed to mention this only that Nolan should be improved. I hope he’s improved enough to not have the same weaknesses as he showed tape. Let’s face it any smart coach would loud the box and be aggressive until he shows that he can hit the deep ball. If he can do that, check down to the RBs when it’s there, and know when to run better that would be huge for him.
So we have plenty of tape on Boise State QB. So the beavs game plan should be easier to game plan than Nolan because Boise’s QB is more seasoned and fine tuned. Having game film and recognizing tendencies is part of it, but its also the ability to recognize formations. A player moving from practice/scout team to backup or starter means they have to break away from their defensive habits of trying to stop the Beavers offense to stopping your opponents offense. I feel we have a few of these players on the DL, and maybe LB. I remember I went in as a backup DL in a game and I was given a wide open lane where I wasn’t blocked. I immediately thought “trap” then I realized I was up against a team who doesn’t run trap and was late to make the tackle for loss, but still made the solo tackle for loss by grabbing the back of the RB’s jersey and pulling him down. So ya, going from scout team to game is a different mentality.
Nolan probably is what he is at this point, but with a small improvement due to last season’s experience. I see us being very competitive, but I don’t see him being the difference maker in a close game. Hope I’m wrong though!
Well he’s a gamer, so they’re not going to see the progress in practice. There’s no way you take a few thousand more reps and don’t improve, though, unless you have a major learning disability.
Or you just can’t see…
Dooz for the win!!
I hope the designed qb runs are in the playbook this year. Nolan only needs to get 8-10 yds each time for it to be another factor for the defenses.
Remember how aggressive Chip was running Marriota and he didn’t really have a backup qb, but it was the difference for that entire offensive attack(plus wr holding). I’d like to see Nolan be even 25% of that threat to run.
Mariota was a heisman QB there isn’t any comparing them. He was built much more solid and was way faster than Nolan which makes him less likely to get hurt. Not to mention there was so much misdirection and tempo Mariota was in the open field instead of getting gang tackled.
What i mean by designed QB runs is a QB draw or an option play and he is allowed to keep the ball and run. The read option from shotgun rarely worked last season; if it did, it was because the DL/LB was held or missed the tackle. Most of the time, later on in the season, those were a guarantee lost yardage play.
Here’s my prediction for Broncos/Beavers game..
I don’t see the Beavers defense slowing down Boise St..
The Broncos have an experienced senior QB and a solid RB. They also have a highly touted Freshman at RB that should carry some of the load as well.
This is the biggest game on BOISE’s schedule and so they will try to make a statement as usual.
It’s the battle of “Blue Collar U vs Lunch Pail U”
One major advantage is Coach Smith spent some time coaching at the Smurf turf so he probably has some good intel from that.
However, I expect the Beavers to have a slow start offensively. They will find their groove but it’ll be too little too late.
I watched the film on our Freshman RB Martinez. I don’t know what all the hype is about. He doesn’t have elite speed. He does have good vision. Just a little bearish on him until I see him in action at the collegiate level.
Boise St 38
Oregon St 28
Go Beavs! Prove me wrong
If BSU puts 38 on Beavs this team probably won’t win 3 games. That would mean the D has regressed from last year
Agreed
Or the offense and/or ST got really careless with the ball…
This comment isn’t that bad but since you’ve shown up here you’ve seemed like a troll.

RESER EXPANSION
Eggers up with a piece, he still seems to be a MR fan. Thinks the new plan is too small, he writes:
I suppose the uncertainty about the future of the Pac-12 leaves OSU administrators relieved they were thinking small. Perhaps that’s prudent, but it’s also selling yourself short.
In 2005 and ’06, Reser Stadium capacity was twice increased, first to 43,300, then to 45,700.
Under coach Mike Riley, the Beavers played 63 home games over the decade from 2005 to 2014. They drew 40,000 or more 57 times. It was a given.
Quotes Tanner Sanders: “Straight line distance from a sideline view, I believe those (premium) seats will be closest to the field of any Pac-12 school,” said Sanders, recently hired as assistant director of development of the Longhorn Foundation, the fundraising arm of the Texas athletic department. “And one of the closest in the country, I know for sure.”
https://www.kerryeggers.com/stories/soon-to-be-coming-your-way-a-full-stadium-in-corvallis
Eggers is right. Beavs sized their brand new stadium based on ticket volume at the end of a decade of losing. SMH
New stadium capacity will be 35k.
Then again maybe they sized it knowing they were headed to the Mountain West. Barnes playing 3d chess…
The last I heard capacity will be around the 40k range. There is also room for standing room only tickets once the stadium is completed next season. Think terrace and balcony areas as standing room only areas.
The lower capacity is fine since there is still a chance to add an upper deck on the south endzone where the new video board is currently being installed if its needed down the road. Its honestly better to have a full stadium like Boise or Washington State size than a stadium with 4-5000 seats unoccupied.
Replacing bleacher seats and adding chairbacks/armrests is a big plus, but means less people can squeeze into the same footprint.
I’m fine with it. The old side was never full and the upper wings of the east side were often pretty empty, even for “sellouts”
I cant remember the last time I actually saw that stadium sold out, other than Civil War(thanks, oregon fans) games and maybe Wisconsin.
The Quizz game vs #1 USC had a ton of empty seats and we were playing the #1 team. The post Rogers brothers era hasn’t been kind attendance wise and fans have gotten used to not attending. Dont see that turning around any time soon. And football isnt like baseball or basketball where a no-name team can catch lightning in a bottle and make a deep run out of nowhere to bring lufe back to the program quickly
Having a 8+ win season consistently and winning bowl games will get butts back in the seats. I really want to go to a game at Reser next season to experience Reser completed! Been waiting for this day since 2003 when tbey announced the Raising Reser Project with Dennis Erickson! Very fitting to have the current Head Coach be the Quarterback who sparked life back into this program and see the stadium be completed and state of.the art with luxury premium seating so close to the action!
It’d be nice to have a big name OOC opponent come to Corvallis. Besides Texas Tech I think the next will be Ole Miss in 2030 lol
Next season’s best home games appear to be Utah, UW, and UCLA, in that order in my opinion.
With the Student Wellness Center – it really limits the opportunity to expand that end of the stadium. Only other option would be to do something new with the Valley Center.

Lots of attention called to the OSU Beavers baseball program. Nice!
Well, there’s a major error in the story, but they do pick BSU@OSU as one of the 10 best games this coming weekend:
https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/2022/08/30/college-football-week-1-schedule-ranked/7594822001/
We have a SELL OUT for the Boise State game! Scott Barnes is a genius! Lol 3D Chess? Let’s implode the old side eliminating half the capacity and we can get a sell out for all the home games!
https://twitter.com/BeaverAthletics/status/1564732742775951362?t=biAFjrs8PRIDKkjbRYLyww&s=19
Had to happen at some point
All it took was ripping out half the stadium and reducing the seat count. “Sell out” is not a sustainable status…
Interviews with Nolan, Steward and Musgrave. The Nolan and Stweard interviews help clear up a lot that’s been talked about here.
https://247sports.com/college/oregon-state/Article/Oregon-State-Beavers-football-2022-AJ-Steward-Luke-Musgrave-Chance-Nolan-preview-Boise-State-Broncos-watch-video-192322290/
Thanks for posting. Good interviews with Nolan and RB Coach. Both gave thoughtful answers to good questions. Not impressed with Musgrave. Just awkward. He worries me because I don’t think he’s super reliable. Talented yes. Good to hear the RB coach praise the D. When he says they’ll be good, I believe him. If we can commit to run, dink and dunk on passing game with occasional deep ball, and our D is legit… look out. BSU game will tell us a lot.
What was awkward about Musgrave? Seemed generic but fine.
Interesting Nolan says all the reps the game has slowed down. This is exactly what I was saying. Unless he has a learning disability, there’s no way he won’t be way better with all those reps. And he was already pretty good. I’m not sure he will be elite, but I think he could be a very good game manager who lets the guys around him maximize their talents. He could be elite if he develops the deep ball a bit more.
found an article where he says he kept putting too much zip on his deep balls instead of letting them float in the air and let the receiver make the play. He also said in the same article he can throw it 65-70 yards, but the accuracy becomes an issue with that distance. So yes, he’s not Sean Mannion or Derek Anderson, but if he can throw a 35-40 yard deep ball and connect, I would much rather have that than throwing 10% completion rate with 40+ yard passes.
Angry, haven’t you always said the Beavs would be better off with a game manager at QB than someone with Elite talent that can’t manage the game? I vaguely recall you saying something along those lines. Not trying to put words in your mouth or anything.
To me someone like Dan Lefevour was the perfect college QB. We talked about Kellen Moore a lot here, too. I don’t know what you’d call those guys, but they aren’t prototypical pro QBs. I really like efficiency in the college game. So, maybe that falls under game manager. Nolan has a bit of that. He’s not perfect like those guys, but he’s at least in that mold.
Per Carter Bahns on twitter:
Play-By-Play: Beth Mowins
Analyst: Kirk Morrison
Sideline: Stormy Buonantony
My ears are already bleeding. I will be tuning into the Mike Parker broadcast.
Sounds like something ESPN would do to us
Who is worse, Beth Mowins or Petro Papadakis? ESPN moved Beth from the 12:30 PM EST time slot to the 10:30 PM EST time slot. I guess they are trying to tell us something? Maybe Pac-12 will have an ESPN deal after all? Rumor mill is Pac-12 will go to an 8 game conference schedule and play 4 non-conference games 1 being an ACC game(my guess is it will be a home and home type scenario). Coaches and AD’s aren’t too thrilled with it because they say they have a hard enough time filling their future schedules. Beavs do have some interesting future home and home matchups:
2023: @ SJSU (WHY away game?!?!) UC Davis and SDSU(Home Game/possible future Pac-12 member?)
2024: Idaho State, @ Boise State, Purdue(home portion of the home and home)
2025: Portland State, Fresno State, and @ Texas Tech(intriguing)
2026: Sacramento State, Texas Tech, @SDSU
2027: Portland State, New Mexico, @Ole Miss(intriguing, finally get an SEC team to agree to a home and home)
2028: @ New Mexico(WHY?!) Open, Open
2029: Ole Miss(SEC team in RESER!), @ SJSU(Another Road game at SJSU!?)
2025 game against Tech is at Jerry World
debating on whether I can make it work to go to that game. I definitely want to go to the Ole Miss game both in Oxford and in Corvallis. Nebraska starts school in middle of August and ends middle of May. So they start school a month earlier than Oregon schools. So taking my 3 kids out of school for a day is frowned upon.
That is great, just moved to FW.
I have a hard time not thinking a few of these non-conference games will be conference games when they are played. And there are far worse road trips than going to New Mexico if you’ve never been. Santa Fe, old town, all the Route 66 stuff, White Sands. And Ole Miss has The Grove and Memphis nearby.
Why do we schedule games @Boise State ever? Tell Boise State if you want to play us, you get us at home. It’s just such a poor idea. Same with Fresno State this year. But do teams like Alabama ever play road games at Sun Belt schools? Heck no…
Or the 2 games @ SJSU without them playing in Corvallis!? Who came up with 2 road games that isn’t even a home and home at least?! That is Larry Scott bad right there.
Beth Mowins. I personally like Petros. He respects the Beavs and is well informed about the program when calling the game.
I don’t disagree on his smarts and such, but his voice. Grates my ears harder than a squeaky door.
For some reason I don’t see that home game against Ole Miss ever happening. Somehow they will have an ’emergency’ cancellation and we will be stuck scrambling for an Idaho State like team to fill the void last second and will have to overpay.
With the Student Wellness Center – it really limits the opportunity to expand that end of the stadium. Only other option would be to do something new with the Valley Center.
Lets actually show we can fill the new setup before we even worry about other expansion, haha.
I’d imagine it wouldnt be too difficult to extend the upper level seating on the new side though. Would rather see more sideline seating than endzone seating anyway.
https://spaces4learning.com/articles/2022/04/07/osu-reser-stadium-expansion-project.aspx?s=ct_nu_070422&m=1Wrong link. Correct one below:
https://spaces4learning.com/-/media/EDU/S4L/Images/2022/04/OSUReser_Stadium-Bowl_Populous.jpg
Agree NiceBeaver. Sell out the stadium consistently each season, if not consecutively, and if tickets are hard to come by on secondary markets, then look into expanding. I don’t see that happening anytime soon.
Also agree on sideline seating versus endzone seating, but, the corners of the West side would block the view of the valley. Hence, “valley view”.
Also – bad day for Beavs in the NFL, Mannion, Peko and Togai all released.
Baylor should have stayed another year
Roberts as well. Who the hell is giving these guys advice to leave early? Now what are they going to do?
Jefferson hung on at Detroit…not sure that’s better than hitting the FA route and getting picked up, but, he made the cut!
Seems like Togai could get picked up by someone..I think Mannion and Peko are likely done.
Bradford seems like a good fit at San Diego for a complimentary slot reciever, but they’re pretty set with WRs and he may not have NFL speed(?).
Hope he gets a chance. Think his special teams skills gave him the roster spot. That Lions RB room is stacked.
Togiai back on the practice squad in Philly. He’s been competing for a spot for a few years now. Seems like the end of the road may be close. Then again, Philly has injury problems and an unclear depth chart at TE, so he could still get his chance.
Read Mannion likely to join Seattle’s practice squad.
This is one of those striking examples of how things may not work out for highly rated college players. Offensive lineman at LV Raiders cut: “Leatherwood and the Raiders are splitting up after one season. The Raiders cut the offensive lineman after picking him 17th overall in the 2021 NFL draft.
Leatherwood started at tackle for the Raiders and then moved inside to guard. He never quite lived up to expectations at either position. The lineman gave up eight sacks and allowed 65 pressures as a rookie, according to Pro Football Focus. The former first-round pick will now search for a fresh start elsewhere.
Leatherwood was an accomplished offensive lineman at Alabama. He was a unanimous first-team All-American and won the Outland Trophy as the nation’s best interior lineman.”
Not often a team gives up so quickly on such a high draft pick. Wonder if he’s not bright, or poor work ethic, or nagging injuries, or a bit of everything.
It’s the Raiders. I’m sure he will be better on a different team. Winning the Outland Trophy is pretty darn good.
You haven’t watched him play. Poor footwork, poor hand placement, basically a hot mess. He managed to out athlete in college, NFL is too fast and players are too good. That ‘Bama uni helped his selection. Now his headed is twisted like a pretzel, a change of cenery will do him good, but he has MANY flaws, many of which were pointed out pre-draft.
Gruden and Mayock had a disasteroid run of picks for the Raiders. Damon Arnette, Henry Ruggs, Cle Ferrell, Leatherwood…all flamed out. I fucking hate Gruden, hated him before his second run, hate him more now, that dood can eat a bag of dicks.

Agreed — speed perhaps?
Only one Dick from last year’s team made a NFL roster this year… so much for “elite” talent lol

Article about Nolan and his recognition of holes in his game. Really good to hear this from your starting QB. Probably a big part of why he earned the job.

Havent heard from NucBeav in awhile. You still around Nuc?
He rage quit because I said I didn’t like Mitch. Lol. We’ll see. He’ll probably be back during the season.
He’s over on building the damn now… too bad I liked that guy, hopefully he comes back
He’s over on building the damn now
Safe space.
I liked him as well, but he definitely was a personality that needed a safe space.
Incorrect. I left because you are an engomaniac dick head. Don’t dox my email and name.
I still read stuff here as there are some posters that are interesting but I’m not going to contribute to your ego with content.
Didn’t dox anyone. You have posted your email here yourself.
Also, LOL. You left because I was critical of Mitch. Enjoy the safe space.
Yes I posted it. Not you.
The correct response is ‘sorry’.
How is it Doxing if you willfully posted your name and email in public on this site?
This is the definition of Doxing: search for and publish private or identifying information about (a particular individual) on the internet, typically with malicious intent.
I shared your email, that you have publicly shared, because someone missed you. Explain how that’s doxing.
Also, you left because I criticized Mitch, and you didn’t like how I evaluated players, after you asked me to give a methodology on how I evaluate players. And I have the ego?!?
Yeah I bet you searched the forum for it like a normal user instead of pulling it from my login information.
I left cause you are a narcissist on a non-functional platform begging for alms. Edit button still broken huh? Guess you are too busy to give a shit. Cya
Damn, you’re a pretty evil dude, huh? You play calm and reasoned, but you’re a freaking mess!
Anyway, I’ve spoken up here many times about anti-doxing, and the other admins know I go out of my way to be sensitive and/or remove information like that. So your claim is just absurd. And I did remove the email immediately after seeing you get upset about it, even though you fucking published it in public, and even though you’re being a huge dick. You’re welcome.
This site does not condone doxing of any kind, and if anyone ever thinks that is happening just link me to any info you want removed.
That nuclearbeav, idk what happened to him he used to be so reasonable.
Lay off the schrooms?
Did I mess up your safe space?
Whatever, dood. See you Saturday. If you couldn’t handle baseball season, you’re going to love football season.
Handle? You only listened/watched like 10 games.
We don’t read this to hear you argue. Just being honest.
@angry not nic, post stuff I enjoy reading
Bennyshouse. Not a fan of sbnation
My B! Hope you’re doing well buddy!
Glad you asked, NiceBeav?
Just checked back in. Sorry to bring up bad blood. Hope you guys can wipe the slate and start out clean again cause you both bring good content to the forum in your own ways, even if those ways dont always mesh.
Nuc, I cant say i ever saw the doxing incident you’re speaking of, but i can speak from my own experience where i’ve accidentally posted my own email on this site before years ago and angry instantly reached out to me via email and let me know about it and fixed it because he was concerned with my personal info getting into the wrong hands. And it happened on more than one occasion. He’s always been very protective of my data, which i appreciate.
Anyway, hope to hear from both pf you more throughout the season.
Hoping the Beavs give is more to talk about after week 1 than Penixes.
You’re fine. Not the one saying I’m not here cause I need a safe place. I wasn’t ambiguous when I left. The schtick got old. I’ll be elsewhere.
Enjoy the safe space.
I have no bad blood and hold no grudges. It’s all on this snowflake who can’t handle that I don’t like Mitch. Boo hoo. Nuc, if you ever want to resolve this, email me instead of bringing out your petty nature on the forum.
Thanks for confirming on the doxing, NB. No patience for it. Even the Michael Castori incident…
https://www.google.com/amp/s/fansided.com/2022/08/31/astros-rumors-michael-conforto-offer/amp/
Conforto has to sign today with whatever team to be eligible for playoffs
I was hoping Seattle would sign him
So I kind of was hoping the Beavs would switch sides this year so that the fans are behind the opposing team but I don’t think that’s going to happen. Also like has been said many times before keep our players in the shade.
Never will happen. Visitor locker room is now on the West side. I thought they scrapped the visitors locker room, but I’ve been gold from those who have toured it first hand that there is a visitors locker room. Last season of using Gill for visitors.
But they’ve crossed the field all these years with the visitors at Gill and standing on the west side. Why not keep that tradition alive and have them cross the field from west to east now?
Do you really want the student section to be right behind the visitor bench, taunting, screaming, getting into the opponents heads a bit? Cause we know that will happen. Also, do we know if they are putting more student seating on the West side on the sidelines or will those be reserved seat backs? hard to tell from the rendition models. If they are turning the first lower level into student section, then why not put the home team on the side of the donors and press box?

Fun fact: OSU has 44 turnover in 50 games since Smith took over. That’s good for first in the pac 12.
Yeah, I never see complaints about lack of turnovers anymore, and haven’t since year 2 of Smith.
I see comments about Riley/Eggers above. Yeah, Riley would win 8 or 9 games here and there. A lot of that was on Jim Gilstrap, and Riley went downhill immediately after Gilstrap died and the players he found left the program. Sammy Stroughter was a great example. But if people want to give Riley credit, so be it. But anyway, Smith can do what Riley did and win 7 to 9 games, but Riley couldn’t do what Smith is about to do if he sticks around (and stops messing up 4th downs).
In other words, Smith has way more upside. This is what we wanted. I’m willing to give up good for a shot at great. Even if it fails.
Riley won 9 games late in his tenure with “his” guys. Should’ve been more than that, but it was the “I wish we had run more” era of playcalling.
He actually did a good job of innovating on offense and doing things others wouldn’t. He brought in the fly sweep stuff to utilize James R and he landed Quiz, a running back many schools thought was too small. He ran a countercultural offense that played into the defensive trends of the time.
Late-stage Mark Banker and the learning curve for QB’s in his offense we’re Riley’s downfalls in the same way horrible QB decisions were GA’s. Banker was a good DC for a long time, but he didn’t adapt to the read option so OSU could never get over the hump on defense and beat the Chipster. That meant that when we had lights out QB play every third year, we never had a defense quite good enough to support it.
Overall, Riley gave us a competitive program and some great players and moments. It’s fun laughing at the memes now, but he had a positive impact on the program in a major way.
I’m excited to see JS continue to grow as a HC. Bringing the program back to where it is after the GA disaster was already a huge accomplishment. Probably similar to Riley 1. The big question is can he surpass Mediocre Mike’s accomplishments?
As in 44 turnovers for the offense?
Yes.
Looking at Boise St the key matchup is going to be the defense vs BSU offense.
It feels like Bray is going to be more aggressive and wants the defense to fly around, similar to the style he played in. The downsides to this can be areas will be left exposed if the defense isn’t disciplined.
Boise St QB is experienced but does he have the weapons to do damage? He lost his top WR from last year. The next guys up didn’t have a huge amount of production. Also for what it’s worth, Vidlak got beat out for the backup job so he won’t be playing.
BSU running game is nothing to write home about. Pretty lackluster production. Last year’s longest run was 38 yards, and the QB is no threat to run. Avg 3.1 yards per carry. It’s the same starter as last year and there’s no backup with significant experience.
In the passing game, they lose their top guy Shakir who had 77 catches. Of the three listed starters, the top returning guy had 34 catches, next guy had 12 and the last one had 4. So it looks like an offense that is predicated on getting the ball to the top guy.
BSU OL starts 4 seniors and 1 JR. LT was all first team all conf. RG was second team all conf. Fairly experienced unit but not exactly making the offense go.
Key for the Beavs will be to stop the running game and then harass the QB into making tough throws. Hopefully Bray has gotten all of the Tibesar stink out of the players. He’ll need to be creative in how he pressures the QB.
Looking at BSU losses last year, a common theme was the lack of a running game. In all their losses last year, they were held under 100 yards rushing.
Looking at the Beavs defense, you have to hope for growth even from the veteran players. I don’t expect much from the DL since they just need to hold their ground and let the LBs fly around. LB is probably the most important position. I am surprised to see most OLB are around 250 pounds, in the past they’d be around 220. That would tell me they will become pass rushers on third down, don’t think they’ll drop into coverage much at that weight. The secondary is all dependent on the effectiveness of the pass rush. If Wright can turn into a shutdown corner, it’ll can open up the defense to really fly around.
For Bray, with a lot of depth, I do think there will be lots of personnel changes in the game. He’ll definitely vary up the looks. He will really need to pick his spots to be aggressive especially on third down. In his limited sample, the third down defense was ok outside the Oregon game. vs Oregon it was awful. 3rd down opponent conversion was 48.9% under Bray. If you take out the Oregon game, its a more respectable 38% (which would rank in the 60s last year). Beavs finished 128th in 3rd down defense overall last year.
The players came out with a lot of energy last year when Bray took over and had a really good game against Stanford. Can they channel that into the first game this year? I don’t think they’ll get all of the Tibs stink out of them quite yet. Some breakdowns are expected but hopefully they aren’t back breaking.
How to beat Boise St
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_tZhfqbtg0
Punch them in the mouth before the game instead of after the game? I’m still pissed at Blount coming back in during the Civil War that year. Had they not put him in, beavs would have won that game.
Hey Nuc and Nice (plus anyone else I missed in Bend)…hope you are doing well after last Sunday night. Brought some bad memories for wife and I. We appreciate the first responders, Mr. Surrett and others who went back in to help.
Sorry this is off-topic, kinda important to check in and be real.
Life is never off topic. If any of you were in the area of the incident, glad you’re safe. If you knew the people lost in the tragic incident, my condolences.
I’m not in Bend actually, but did see the news the other night. Terrible. Another nut case who’s toi cowardly to take themself out first.
Thanks for thinking of us Bend guys! It was crazy, my Ma and Cousin both live right off 27th. I’m in Three Rivers, (30 min south) but pretty surreal. Talking with them over the phone when it was going down, knowing there wasn’t much I could do. Thankfully they are all good. What the hell is going on these days?
I’m here too. Drove by late afternoon and couldn’t decide whether we were going to jump in to 27th or Westside Safeway. Fate can be fickle, I’ve had one amazing and one horrific.
We’re okay. We live half a mile from it so I could hear the high caliber shots from inside. Going to miss Dave, he was always nice and helpful and obviously a stand up guy. His family has a go fund me if you want to help them out with all the expenses.
It’s an awful thing for Bend to join so many other communities that have been hurt by this madness.
What happened?
Nutcase with guns shot up a Safeway in Bend
https://www.thedailybeast.com/three-dead-after-shooting-at-bend-oregon-safeway-in-the-forum-shopping-center
Interesting that the piece failed to include the praise for police included in the original statement by shopper Josh Caba, as reported in other media.
The entire incident lasted about 4 minutes from first 911 call to discovery of the perps dead body. LEO I spoke with arrived at about minute #2, much respect for the deputies, troopers and officers who responded so quickly and entered the store to the sound of gunfire.
I would love the Beavs to get consistent pressure with 3 to 4 guys!
I think the Beavs just need to control both lines of scrimmage, run the ball, don’t turn it over, control the clock and don’t allow any big plays. Do all of those things and they should win the game. This year it feels like we really do have the better overall talent than a mountain west team.
In this game I’ll be looking for a few things besides just a win.
1. How much has Nolan progressed? Deep ball, decision making like knowing when to take off and run? There were often times where he just needed to run and move the chains and he would force it instead. Can he protect the ball better both with fumbles and interceptions.
2. Can this line pick up where last year’s left off? Can they be dominant in the run game again and maybe even be better? Is Fuaga a better RT than Kipper? Can Kipper dominate at guard? Can Brewer keep producing at his PFF rating over a larger sample size although I think PFF is eh)?
3. Can this defense get good consistent pessure? I think Fisher is a huge upgrade over Roberts in the passing game. He was our best Blitzer when he came in and is much better in coverage. Can Chatfield live up to the hype?
4. Who looks like they’re going to be playmakers and breakout players? Oladapo, Wright, Austin, Fisher, Chatfield, Mccartan, Golden, Gould, Harrison, Bolden, Musgrave (c’mon finally), Overman, all RBs, Fuaga, Brewer,Rawls, Shippen? Many more but definitely these guys.
5. Discipline. Can this team avoid costly penalties? They were pretty decent last year but I’d like to see more improvement. Will they avoid blown assignments running the wrong route or play?
6. Special teams. Has Hayes improved his consistency/accuracy? Having a clutch kicker would be huge if this team wants to make a run. Can Loucher keep producing at an all conference level? Will this team finally have a big time returner? Bradford was pretty good on punt returns but no one else has done much for awhile.
Run the ball.
Man, that Kwan play up in the twitter feed is amazing. Ball hit to far left corner, apparently hits a wall maybe bounces around in the corner (bad angle), then he scoops it up and throws the guy out at first because the guy likely ran slow, thinking it would be an easy single…watch it.
Kwan caught it turned and hit the cut off man. The cut off man threw to first in time for the double play. Was an amazing play, display of teamwork, and heads up by the cutoff to just throw the ball to first and not eat it.
Dope!
Dline should be much improved with Chatfield arriving plus the return of Hodgins and McCartan from season ending injuries. Schad is the only guy gone from the main rotation right?
If the line can at least play even and not get moved easily, the lbs will have lots of opportunities and subs won’t need to cover for as much time.
I’m hopeful for major improvements on the defensive side.
Go Beavs
Someone on here brought up the attendance with reduced capacity from the 46,500 max capacity in 2010 down to between 34,000 and 39,000. In 2010, Oregon State attendance was averaging around 45,000 per home game. Grant it, with inflation, cost of living in Oregon higher than 2010, etc., they still should have planned seating on the corners of the upper deck on the new West side to bring capacity back up to the 45,500 range. This team is certainly trending up and inflation cannot stay stagnant and keep going on this trajectory. Then again, I’m no Economics major.
Here’s the data from 2010 showing the attendance that season, including road games that year.
https://static.pac-12.com/sports/football/stats/2010-11/HTML/OSU.HTM
I’m OK with a somewhat lessened capacity and more likely sellouts. A smaller stadium with proper accommodation for acoustics can still be plenty loud
“Inflation cannot stay stagnant and keep going on this trajectory” says who?
If inflation is stagnant, isn’t the trajectory flat?
No
I must have a different definition of “stagnant” and “trajectory” than everybody else.
CPI stagnation month-to-month doesn’t imply a 10 yr flat trajectory
correct. Right now the inflation rate is stagnant(everything has pretty much “stalled” at this point), but the trajectory is increase and then a crash; similar to the 2000 Y2K scare and the 2008 stock market crash(Thanks Enron insider trading). Also, more money the government “prints”/spends, the more inflation is going to happen.
A lot can happen in 10 years.
Not sure if any of you follow Dave Bartoo of the College Football Matrix. His site is basically a giant data model where he plugs in all sorts of factors about every team and applies different weights to how impactful those factors are to overall team success, as a sortof betting tool. It’s pretty interesting stuff.
Anyway, I chatted with him recently about the Beavs and he currently has them as a “wildcard” this season, winning 6 games. Although a weak north division and a positive coaching effect could push the Beavs over. So basically Vegas has it about right at 6.5 and this is likely a tough team to put money on.
Anyway, his site can get pretty interesting if youre loiking for an alternative way to follow cfb stats and data. Does require a small subscription fee.

Phil Steele’s brother?
He’s better than Phil Steele. He is extremely high on Coach Bray and Coach Smith. He is all in with Coach Bray is what he’s said on 1080 the fan a few weeks ago. He looks at the team as a whole and not just the past performance stats. He is able to project a teams win/loss based on their depth chart.
Well any credibility was just lost as there is no north and south in the PAC-12.
Not that it will matter.
Tom Fornelli with Sportsline has Oregon covering the spread with the under. Has Boise covering and winning as the lock of the week because he’s basing the bet on last b years defensive numbers. He has Florida winning by 3 against Utah which is Florida covering.
https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/the-six-pack-ohio-state-vs-notre-dame-georgia-vs-oregon-among-best-week-1-college-football-picks/
I would not trust this guy.
Yup, his entire prediction is based on the Beavs D of last season. No surprise, Bray is the biggest key to this game and to the hopes of an 8+ win season.
Crystal Ball for Roger Alderman to go to Utah. Darn.
I’m really high on this recruit though. I really hope we can land him out of the state of Utah. https://247sports.com/player/taliafi-taala-46115708/
Boise St preview by these guys. Haven’t had a chance to listen yet.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=93e4oOlbP8c
I listened to it….not worth your time. They start with the OSU roster for half the segment then the other half is BSU and all they’re talking about is history between the two schools, then they talk about the key to Boise State winning which is Bachmeier being the meter of how well BSU will do on Saturday. Then they talk about the OSU defense and how much pressure they will be able to get on Bachmeier. Can they stop him? That’s essentially the video. I won’t spoil their predictions at the 25 minute mark.
They say after watching a couple weeks of camp, they never really saw Nolan show the ability to connect on the deep ball still. Balls being batted away by the defense, or receivers not being able to catch up with the throw.
So.. more of the same we saw last year.
Hopefully the OLine is the synergistic unit it was last year. Their “highlight film” for the best OLine award was impressive, worked together so well. Have that with that deep running back stable, and let Nolan run some to keep the defense off balance. He might relax and connect on a deep throw or three.
CFN predicts Bachmeier will play great, BSU D will hold in for a 30-27 win.
Jefferson waived then signed to lions practice squad
WEEK 1 PHIL STEELE REPORT
Boise State has won 3 of last 4 SU vs Oregon State & have covered their last two road games vs P12 foes. Last time here (‘16) Boise State held Oregon State to 67 1H yds & used McNichols 208 rushing yds (4TD) to roll to a 38-24 win as a 13 pt AF. Oregon State leads series 5-4 but are just 2-4-1 ATS. Home team is 6-2 SU but 2-3-1 ATS with their last win (‘13) in Hawaii Bowl as 2 defensive TD’s led the way. Oregon State is 13-4 SU but 5-10 ATS in home openers s/’05. Oregon State has 15 returning starters and Jonathan Smith’s best team yet. Last year they were a perfect 6-0 SU in Corvallis with wins over Washington, Utah and Arizona St. Boise State is 33-11 SU on the road the last 8 years and 7-1 ATS as an AD in that span. They beat #10 BYU and #25 Fresno State on the road last year. Boise State is #11 on my Exp Chart and Oregon State is #22. Tough to go vs either of these teams.

One thing I haven’t seen mentioned is OSU’s terrible record when on national TV. Not only do they tend to lose but they’ve lost big. But this an entirely different team that seems mentally strong. Hopefully that can pull off the W. It’s definitely going to give the program exposure with the new scoreboard and the renovation taking place. With it being on ESPN I would think a lot of potential re fruits will be watching and will give the appearance of a team thats on the rise.
We’ve been so indoctrinated into the bullshit aw shucks Riley culture that’s it’s hard not to dwell on past failures. 9er is part of a culture change that takes time but you can see it in the interviews, especially with players. We expect to win every game.
Definitely a big opportunity to boost recruiting so hopefully a win comes to fruition. Last seasons stats on both sides of the ball for each team are almost even across the board. Just gotta force quick three and outs and smash them on the ground to control TOP. Their QB is solid. We need to pressure the shit out of him because they really don’t have a run game.
I guess re fruits will help boost recruiting and bring it to fruition.
On twitter, they have invited a lot of 2024 and 2025 recruits to this weekends game. I’ve seen a lot of HS kids tweeting out, “thanks coach for the invite!” Or ” Go Beavs can’t wait!” With a photo of a player in uniform flexing and stating “you’re invited to the home opener!” So we shall see who shows up this game. Not sure how many game invites they can give out a season for an official visit, but it seems the coaches want the home opener to be the show case game.
I think all of those are unofficial and are usually players that are close in proximity.
Here’s an example: https://twitter.com/CastexEzekiel/status/1565477487286464512?t=yAQGY_57C81Rbjp0BhxO2Q&s=19
Recruit from Elk Grove, CA.
Ya so I think that means the recruit has to handle their own travel and lodging etc. So its unofficial.
They are all probably west coast guys. I doubt anyone further is coming.
I’m going BG on this…big difference between recruits and refruits, just sayin’
Anyone else watching the Fresno State Cal Poly game? Cal Poly is still in this game. 7-21 Fresno State at half. Cal Poly has gotten off a few big runs and haven’t tried to pass further than 20 yards. Their execution is good, they have been able to get sacks on Haener as well. We will see what the second half brings. Fresno State will have 2 extra days of rest compared to Oregon State, but both will have the same amount of time for game prep.(unless coaches start looking at Fresno State game film tomorrow night….)
What. Channel?
Nm
We should be able to get pressure on Haener.
I like Kerry Eggers, but he’s wrong on this assessment.
https://twitter.com/kerryeggers/status/1565546544254033920?t=m_bfwrS8mRQ9Rx_sTSct-g&s=19
Correct. The fans would be farther away, not further.
I don’t think a 40K+ stadium would fill if/when Beavers are in the Mountain West. Maybe for the odd out of conference game, like playing the Oregon Ducks of the BIG10.
Their hearts would be further from the team, though
Oregon State is not going to the MWC. The more we talk about that being our landing spot, the more it solidifies it. STOP IT!!! Oregon State is no different than Iowa State Football and is better than Kansas football.
But play in a time zone the others don’t watch after they go to bed. So the value is maybe 1/3.
Other than that you are correct.
I forgot Fresno picked up nikko remegio. That guy always kills us.
Fresno State can’t stop a running QB. Tedford’s D looks like Nebraska Banker defense against Terrell Pryor.
Ya too bad their QB is a terrible passer. Cal poly wearing down which usually happens in mismatched games like this.
Not terrible. He has a strong arm, but tries to force it to his guys with no touch. Also, Haener will throw at least 2-3 picks against the beavs next week if he throws the same passes Cal Poly defensive players dropped tonight. Fresno State looks as good as a Mike Riley coached team from 2013. Take care of Boise State, then take care of Fresno State and stay healthy. This could be our season if Nolan can be more accurate and smarter about his throwaway passes.
You’d have to think he would improve on, decision making, ball control, reading defenses from all the reps. Even if he didn’t improve his accuracy everything else makes him a better qb.
Interesting crossover…Fresno State OC played WR 2 years during Jonathan Smith’s tenure at Boise State(2012-2013)
Then from 2015-2016, Kirby Moore became a Graduate Assistant at University of Washington. Same time as coach Smith was the OC/QB coach at UW. 2017, Kirby goes to Fresno State as the WR coach and 5 years later is the OC for Fresno State. So I’m sure this will be a fun match up for Coach Smith. Student vs teacher.
https://gobulldogs.com/sports/football/roster/coaches/kirby-moore/1151
MountainWestWire calls it 35-21 Broncos……..then again, they say, “Nolan is very mobile and is a consistent enough passer… to create problems. If he is allowed to get his rhythm going, the Beavers will likely be able to spread out Boise State’s defense to get the run game going as well.”
Umm, pass to set up the run??

Lazy reporting
My thoughts on the season going in after looking at the schedule and using power ratings:
Games you have no business losing based on your level of talent:
Montana State, Washington State, Colorado, California
Games you are favored in (but not gimmes):
Stanford
Games you are a dog in (but it’s close enough that it’s not undoable):
Boise State, Fresno State, USC, Washington, Arizona State, Oregon (maybe!)
Games you are a major dog in and will probably need some help from the other team to win:
Utah
Utah will be tough, but they shouldn’t be better than last year. They have to replace some standouts on D and their positional strength is shifting to the secondary. That matches up well with what I’m assuming will be our strength on offense.
That game is on the road, Vs the conference favorite, and they will be playing with a legitimate revenge factor. It’s by far the most difficult test on the schedule, and I expect to be double digit dogs. That being said, we all really need them to beat Florida this week, the national value of the conference almost depends on it.
video board was up and running yesterday, lots of testing
If you click the link here https://webcam.oregonstate.edu/reser and start from the beginning of today’s stream, you will see the different color lights coming off the new video board. Looks like they may have entered into a new era for night games of dimming the stadium lighting and using different color lights for touchdowns?
It is very bright. I don’t think they changed out the lights to be LED throughout the stadium. They should because would allow them to do more things. Gill had LED lights that lets them do the lighting effects.
Hmmm. What about generating light that makes the opponent’s jersey look like crap on TV?
Oregon doesn’t need lights, they look like crap regardless. Although, their uniforms this weekend aren’t gaudy and it will be easier to watch their game this weekend.
Has there been anything new on the renaming of the “Rivalry Game”? or are they waiting to see if it will still be played in the coming years. Would have thought the Kalapuya Kup – sponsored by Spirit Mountain Casino would have been a no-brainer. Make the trophy a canoe paddle.
Seems like a low priority vs trying to stay in a major conference to survive.
Don’t get me started on this one. I get both arguments, but it’s not “The American Civil War”. They should rename this the “Battle for the State” or “The Battle Royale” or “Battle in the Valley”?
They should literally name it “The best rivalry game in the nation”, I would love to hear television announcers have to say that repeatedly, haha.
it’s always gonna be the civil war but if they have to change it to something else it should be the 40 mile conflict
It’s the Civil War.
Just saw that Utah State opens at Alabama. Go Aggies!
Utah State opened at home against UConn.
It’s strange that Utah is favored at Florida. Oregon line is also strange. That Northwestern game was a layup, too. San Diego State looks like a pretty decent bet. Some interesting parlay opportunities. Wish gambling was legal……………freaking “free market” republicans!
not legal in Nebraska, but it’s legal in Iowa….
Thank George Bush.
Why Utah is ranked 7th Florida isn’t even ranked? If u want to bet I’m sure u know someone that can put it in for you. I’m in Hawaii where gambling is illegal but my brother is putting the conference championship in for me and he’s in Oregon. My friend is putting the over on 6.5 wins and the win for OSU and he’s out here in Hawaii.
I just don’t trust any sporting event enough anymore to trust that I’m betting on true competition. Watched the Tim Donaghey documentary on Netflix last night. They don’t come out and specifically say they NBA is corrupt and complicit with the game fixing, but it’s very strongly implied. And honestly it makes sense. Why wouldnt they want every playoff series to go 7 games and/or favor teams that bring more eyeballs to the game?
Same applies to college football. Of course they want more playoff games. More opportunities to generate revenue. And why wouldnt they want the traditional blue bloods to stay on top? More eyes on the games = more revenue.
Add to that how much money is being generated by betting as well as the shady characters who get involved in betting and trying to influence the outcome in their favor. So many opportunities for corruption.
CFP to expand to 12 teams…in 2026. This would include six conference champs and six at-large bids.
Who knows what the conferences will look like then, but this is a positive development for the PAC-10.
Up next: the NHL model where like 80% of teams make the playoffs. Lol. What a joke.
I actually think this is a good development. Full disclosure I’m a WSU fan with lots of Beavs in the family, so I root for both. IMO, we’re both screwed as far as the Pac-12 goes and are headed to MWC. We can dominate that conference though! It will give us a great shot at the playoff under the new format. Sure we won’t be playing for nattys but will have a much easier path to big time meaningful post season games than we do currently. For me, the biggest turnoff of College Football recently is the transfer portal. Don’t care about NIL at all, just hate the lack of continuity with all players being free agents pretty much. If they can get that system fixed and make players commit for multiple years we could have the best of both worlds. We’d get to watch our players develop over their whole career which maintains the emotional connection and would also have a great shot to make it to some big time postseason games.
Short term gain only.
It only assures 1 PAc12 team but likely insures 4 sec teams no matter the year.
Rich get richer
1 team each- SEC, ACC, BIG10, BIG12, PAC12, MWC(?)
6 at large- 3 Sec, 2 BIG10, Notre Dame
Guarantee this is the expectation for all involved from SEC, BIG10, ND
All other conferences have been thrown a lifeline with “certain strings attached “…
As it is now Pac isn’t even getting a shot. One shot is still better than zero.
Ya but the best teams win the cup
CFP Board comes out and states they are opening discussions to creating a 12 team Playoff with 6 of the top ranked Conference Champions get automatic bids into the playoffs and then the remaining 6 are “At Large” bids. So this may bode well for keeping the Pac-12/10 intact. I can now see 3-6 MWC teams added to the Pac-12/10 and maybe even SMU? Adding in some of the top MWC teams may implode the MWC where teams like UNLV, New Mexico St, Utah State, etc may not survive as a G5?
How?
ESPN is the driving force here and couldn’t care less if the Pac survives.
6 “at large” teams. Anyone with a functioning brain understands this is just a ploy to add more SEC teams into the mix.
If the Pac survives? Cool. We get our one token opponent in each year to lose in the opening round.
If the Pac doesn’t survive? It’ll just add another SEC into the mix.
Nah, if you go 12-0 or 11-1 in the MWC you’ll have a great shot to get in as long as the non-conference schedule isn’t all cupcakes. Say we drop to MWC but maintain the CW rivalry game. Win that, plus other non-conference wins over like a UCLA and Baylor its easily a top 12 resume.
Welcome to the site, BTW. Saw you are new and just joined today.
Thanks!
WSN has the true assessment of any future football development. All decisions made or announced should be understood through an SEC centric lens.
The goal is always to increase SEC benefit and dominance. BIG10 doesn’t yet realize they are the Washington Generals, although more competitive. BIG10 will not surpass SEC, but BIG10 in the pursuit of that goal is now destroying all stability in the entire college football world.
Rose Bowl, Pac12, MWC, Big12,ACC are all casualties in the aftermath of big media using SEC/BIG10 arms race to attract viewership and alliances from Fox/ESPN.
The last card to be played is Notre Dame.
10 year multi-Billion dollar contracts cannot be sustainable in a changing tech environment, and demographic shifts. These companies and schools are actually stuck in some kind of alternative reality where they think the golden goose only lays bigger eggs as you poke/disrupt it at regular intervals.
Angry predicted a long time ago that this whole thing isn’t sustainable-
Agree that the system is designed to benefit the already powerful (Just like everything else in this world, haha), but it does also give Tier II schools an opportunity to earn a seat at the table. And if you make it there, you at least have a puncher’s chance regardless of the odds. Under the current system, even if the Beavs had their “magical” Pac-12 season and finished 10-2 with a CW victory, it still isn’t enough to make the playoff. It’s unfortunate that the Rose Bowl has lost so much prestige but it’s already been watered down for years. If the hypothetical magical season were to occur where the Beavs go 10-2, win the conference and get to a non-playoff Rose Bowl against Iowa, is that really that satisfying?
You mean it gives the entire SEC a chance to feast at the table.
That is mostly what it does, but I just don’t see how that’s drastically different from what we’ve had for years. SEC is just more invested than we are emotionally and financially. At least now we’ve gone from literally no chance to…….”So you’re telling me there’s a chance!!”
That’s a pretty good assessment.
What’s funny is Oregon thinks they deserve a seat at the table.
From a marketing standpoint? They have some relevance. From a revenue standpoint? Minimal at best.
Washington fits this mold even more so.
Notre Dame is a big piece of the puzzle. But as of right now they don’t want to share their pie with anyone. Until someone comes along and offers them one piece of pie that is worth more than their entire pie? It’s not happening. If NBC ponies up? They’ll stay independent. If not? All bets are off.
The one thing intriguing in these moves is something Wilner touched on. West Coast eyeballs on the networks. At 7pm west coast time all the games are over except west coast games. USC and UCLA can fill that void. But only for home games once they make the move in 2024. Ask yourself. What game would have more eyeballs at 7:30 west coast time? Indiana at USC or Oregon State/Boise State in Corvallis or Boise????
When you’re small potatoes, reality sucks.
I look at it in 2 ways here. There are 10 FBS conferences. 6 highest ranking Conference Champions are automatic bids. Eliminating a P5 conference then elevates a 2 Group of 5 conferences. So essentially, the MWC is competing with Sun Belt, American, MAC, and Conference USA for the final 5 and 6 conference spots and in turn creating more chances for those teams to make the CFP as conference champions. The other 6 “At Large” would then be the top 25 CFP ranking teams that are not conference champions.
2021 as an example year:
Automatic Bids:
SEC: Georgia
Pac-12: Utah
ACC: Pitt
B1G: Michigan
Big12: Oklahoma State
American: Cincy
At Large Teams:
SEC: Alabama
IND: Notre Dame
B1G: Ohio State
Big 12: Baylor
SEC: Ole Miss
B1G Michigan State
This is based on Week 15 rankings from 2021 and conference champions in 2021.
3 SEC, 3 B1G, 2 Big 12, 1 Pac-12, 1 ACC, 1 American, 1 IND
No MWC teams would have made it into the CFP in 2021. So, by eliminating the Pac-12 as a P5 conference, by Week 15 rankings, you would have had # 23 Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns as the final #6 Automatic bids in the CFP instead of Utah or Oklahoma State if Utah goes to the Big12. So effectively taking away the Pac-12 will knock out a current Pac-12 school’s chance of getting into the CFP by switching conferences. Bye bye USC and UCLA dominance hello MWC teams joining the Pac-12! This is probably why USC and UCLA wanted to leave in the first place. They didn’t want to play against MWC teams that will join the Pac-12. The Pac-12 will expand now, not dissolve.
I hope the current Pac stays in tact and adds teams, but am already resigned to UW, UO, Stanford and Cal jumping ship to the Big 10 when given the opportunity. The Big 10 really does need more west coast teams to balance out the travel and expand regional dominance further.
Ok, so they need more teams. Would you want to play Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State, Purdue, Rutgers, Nebraska, Maryland, etc just for a money grab and have a higher hill to climb with playing those teams? Texas, California, and Southeast states have the top recruits. I would think adding SMU would be a better option to add to get into Texas. If I were Oregon and Washington, is it money grab and sniff the conference championship every 10-20 years or a chance at it year in and year out? By being in the Big Ten, they will be deemed a “tougher conference” than the Pac-12. What will drive this is the TV deal $. That will be the deciding factor. I don’t see the Pac-12 dissolving and I don’t see teams making the jump for a money grab.
“Ok, so they need more teams. Would you want to play Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State, Purdue, Rutgers, Nebraska, Maryland, etc just for a money grab and have a higher hill to climb with playing those teams?”
As a fan? No. Guess what. We fans aren’t driving these decisions. Follow the money and you’ll find the answer.
So refreshing. Good points. Welcome and good luck.
“This is probably why USC and UCLA wanted to leave in the first place. They didn’t want to play against MWC teams that will join the Pac-12. The Pac-12 will expand now, not dissolve.”
You can’t be serious.
UCLA and USC are leaving because the $$$$ they can get from the B1G is substantially more than anything the PAC can offer.
It’s as simple as that.
Nice to think there will be six football conferences when all the realignment ends. My guess is that a lot of the conferences being raided finally realized this was the only play to stay relevant and perhaps keep some teams from jumping ship. Also probably makes it less likely for an antitrust lawsuit against the SEC and Big10.
There’s what, 120 teams in FBS? That’s 22 teams per conference with FBS schools, where 1 conference would have 21 teams. So ya, I could see 6 super conferences where each conference champion gets an automatic bid and then the “at large” is the runner up teams. So Pac-12 merges with B1G and Big12 elevating MWC, top ACC teams get taken by SEC. Meanwhile, Sun Belt, MAC, American, and conference USA will all be dissolved and merged together with remaining ACC teams to make the other 2 conferences? This would give a fair advantage to all schools to give them a chance at playing for a chance at the CFP. I honestly see this whole thing as a positive. Not a negative.
Still prefer a 64 team playoff.
I want to see Oregon lose to a triple option team like West Point.
Anyone else watching the Va Tech @ Old Dominion game? Start of the second half….20 minute delay because Va Tech coaches were stuck in the elevator going up to the press boxes. Glad we’re upgrading the West side before we had that problem with an old elevator.
It’s on ESPNU Old Dominion 10 Va Tech 7
Won’t be a problem this year, the coaches can walk down the stairs!
It’ll be interesting this year since the coaches haven’t sat that low to the field since high school.
They can walk down to the bench and yell at players if they wanted to between possessions. Lol
Another fun game
Old dominion takes the lead with 37 seconds left.
Nm review said he was short so ran it in with .33 left

What is the good steaming site you guys use.?
I use streameast.xyz. Most of the games are there
Colorado sucks
Because they were stupid enough to hire the ex offensive coordinator at the University of Minnesota from last season. He absolutely stinks. Total lack of creativity in play calling. The only two only three teams rather that ran more than Minnesota last year with a service academies! What a stupid hire. It’s the good old boys network in action.
Their defense didn’t do too bad; just got worn down. Their offense is abysmal. How did we lose to them last year?
Our defense was abysmal.
At Colorado, you’d think the road team would have the athletes who would look gassed in the 2nd half, but noooooo.
Another year of the Buffs looking like dog shit.
Let’s not give them one of their four wins this year….
Spread down to 2 points. I think a lot of bettors are basing their bets on what Boise St was in the past and recent seasons for the Beavs. In the past they hired all offensive guys, this time they went defense and ended with the worst record since 1998.
I don’t think you’ll see the usual creativeness on offense, the OC doesn’t have a great track record.
It’s his first job as OC. He was a receiver at Boise when Smith was there.
Fans decide MLB is boring, decide to do something about it:
https://www.sfgate.com/athletics/article/Oakland-As-sex-act-investigation-17413309.php
There are probably 100 people shitting on sidewalks in the Bay Area at any one time and the police are obsessed with a couple getting down at a boring A’s game?
New thread prior to game time?
?
Clay Millen, who we spurned in favor of Vidlak, starting as a frosh for CSU at Michigan
Lost my avatar for a while, just figured out why…not so smart lately, err maybe mostly.
Go Beavs!
I’m thinking the Beavers win one that is closer than I’d prefer. Competitive game, points in the 30s. Beavers will need to take care of the ball and lead the TO differential.
I’m predicting blackened, elk burger nachos for a game snack.
Beavs lose 28-24. It’s a season opener, so what else do you need to know?
They will find a new and creative way to blow it that will give us plenty to bitch about next week.
Well, if they’re new and creative, that’s progress. I thought they’d exploited all of the means over the decades.
RE the Ducks: Can an emotional tribute to Spencer Webb, and Marcus Mariotta’s honorary game captains status overcome Bo Nix’s poor track record against GA? Can UO offense offset the loss of its RB who signed with USC? Can GA at least adequately replace its former and now NFL players and overcome the loss of their D coordinator?
I’m guessing its competitive but Nix can’t get it done.
Likely have an extra club leave ticket to the game today. Let me know if you want it.
I wonder how much BSU has tapped into Vidlak’s knowledge of the Beav offense – and how much impact (if any) this type of thing has. Anyway, Odd Shark has a consensus score of 30.2 to 29.8 Beavs, so that’s my prediction. Go Beavs.
As much as they can. I expect he was the scout team QB(?). Plus, BSU’s HC worked with Smith previously.
Maybe this is the season for OSU to switch sidelines? There will be no fans behind BSU today. I don’t know if students are on campus, so there may not be a lot of them at this game, but this seems like a good year to put the opposing team next to the fans, and in the heat (if there are any early season game days), and see how it works out.
Maybe make it permanent? Then fans on the new side “closest in college football,” would be close to Beavers. That side is typically quiet anyway…when they join that great beaver in the sky, maybe more active fans will be on the west side in the future.
This was discussed above. Basically it’s never going to happen. But I would like to see it.
Here’s another view of Reser progress I hadn’t seen:
https://webcam.oregonstate.edu/reser2
Ducks look pretty bad so far.
NC State did everything in their power to give away their game to ECU in the last 10 minutes. EVERYTHING.
If ECU had a kicker worth a shit. That is not the 13th ranked team in the country.
JS, take note. Going for it on 4th down from the 1 yard line up by 7 in the 4th quarter isn’t the brightest of ideas.
All those 4/5 star blue chip recruits for UO look sloooooooowwww compared to the backups from last years NC team.
OT, Bo Nix married his fiancée Izzy Smoke over the summer. Izzy Smoke? I’ll take girls who have a future career in porn for $800 Alex.
Ducks are in decline. Now I understand the line. This coach is even worse than Mario Crystofraud.
Game thread set to go up at 5.
Can we call him Bo Pix?
Bo Knows Interceptions
Something tells me we’re going to see Ty Thompson this year for Nike
What the hell was their plan, to grab a coach and qb from the SEC and think that means they skip steps and win a title? They are always trying to use gimmick moves to skip the final steps in program building.
It is kind of insane how good Georgia is though lol. Literally every skill position other than QB is an absolute behemoth.
They missed out on all of the other coaching candidates because they aren’t the destination they thought they were. You end up with co defensive coordinator who really wasn’t calling the plays.
UCLA struggling with Bowling Green. Only up 7 at the half and tied most of the first half.
That +17 may not be enough to cover for the yucks
I just think there is no comparison between recruits that go to a National Champion SEC team and ANY Pac12 team. Couple that with the continuity that Georgia has from last year, and you have a major mismatch between GA and OU.
*UO
Duck head coach is in over his head and it won’t end well for him.
Ducks have some talent but their identity is gone. The gimmick of Chipster, the Macho of Cristobal are in the rear view mirror and now they are simply a prop for ESPN. Lol
This looks accurate. I don’t know much about this guy having only heard of him in the title game last year, but it seemed reactionary to get him just because he was involved with Georgia, and Georgia won the title. Weird first-level-transitive thinking. That’s why it looks especially gimmicky, even for Oregon.
Still too early to tell at least as the Pac12 goes. Game 1 with 21 transfers will always be tough. This game is reminiscent of that time USC opened against Bama and lost like 55-3 or something.
Ya, Dan Lanning seems that he came from a National Champ team and it may take a year or 5 to get the mentality of a championship team vs. “We can play with anyone” mentality like Boise had, and look how that turned out for them. I wanted the ducks to lose respectfully for the sake of the conference, but now their brand and stock is in jeopardy.
The hire has been gimmicky for awhile, it is finally catching up to them with reality. Their biggest chance at the national championship was against Cam Newton against Auburn.
Glad I picked the Beavs over Oregon this year. These guys look like total bozos. Look uninterested, undisciplined, and slow. They’ll probably bring in some 4 or 5-star QB at some point and start to look like a different team, though. This QB is awful.
So far we know these teams are middle of the pac-12 to bottom feeders:
Arizona(putting a good showing on the road. Didn’t realize they had de Laura and a 4* WR) middle of the pac good little team again.
UCLA- overrated and struggling at home in front of a crowd less than what Reser will have tonight.
Colorado-dumpster fire of a team.
ASU-Jury is still out, but upper middle of the Pac
Cal- currently struggling against UC Davis at home bottom of the Pac
UofNo O- struggling to do anything offensively against UGA. Their defense is keeping them in this game by limiting big plays, but Bo Nix should be Nixed. They have talent for Pac-12, but they would struggle in the B1G like they are today against GA. They will be a challenge this year against the upper Pac12. Bo Nix locks onto receivers and telegraphs where he wants to go.
So far, if Utah can take care of business against Florida, they are the favorites in the Pac-12 right now.
Pac-12 is not the conference it was in the early 2000’s.
Just like how the Florida schools have suffered from their in-state talent being raided, California/west coast schools have, too.
Not all kids want to stay near home. If they’re good enough and get an NIL deal, they can pay for mon and dad to fly out. Also, are HS kids wanting to go to a college town, good size city like Eugene, or a major city like LA, Seattle, etc or are they wanting to go to a storied program like Alabama, Ohio State, Texas, etc?
It’s just different from how it used to be. Supersized recruiting budgets and a more business like approach to the game has changed recruiting and eliminated the regional advantage certain programs used to have.
Dux defense keeping them in this? Lol are you watching the game?
Their defense wasn’t giving up big plays and now they’re gassed. So ya, this is now a blowout.
They haven’t punted all game though. They were working this defense from the get go.
Lolol….
Iowa beat South Dakota St 7-3. No touchdowns were scored in the entire game. That doesn’t happen very often.
Two safeties in the game?
Correct

I’m pretty much with angry with the floor and ceiling. I honestly believe they can win any game on the schedule but just don’t think the team is there mentally to bring it week in and week out so I think they’ll drop some. I wanted to go 10-2 but I just figure they’ll drop a winnable atgame at Fresno or against USC. I could see them losing to Oregon but my orange blood won’t let me pick that. After watching the first half of the Georgia game lanning could lose this team by the end of the season. I put a 100 on the Beavs to win the pac, 200 on the over for wins, and a 100 on this game. We’ll know a lot more about this team after Boise that’s for sure. Hopefully they can just play clean enough to squeak out a win then they can clean things up and take the momentum to Fresno.
Can’t lose any of the first 3 if this is going to be a special season. Those are just not programs a legit contender should lose to. The USC-Utah back to back will be tough but no reason Beavs can’t win out after that. I guess UW is a question mark, there is always a chance they’ll be good.
Not only that, but husky stadium is a tough place to play.
Who do you have for Colorado?
Whoops. I have a win there.
42-3 now lololol.
Yep natty contenders they are
Phil Knight picks up the lifeline phone…..”hello, SEC?”

Beavs should finish above Oregon this year.
UTEP currently doing better against Oklahoma than Nike against Georgia
Oregon is ranked 11th.
That’s the joke
Nebraska struggling with North Dakota. ND about to tie it up in the third quarter.
Unfortunately, didn’t happen. Nebraska looks to be in command at 31-17. It would be nice to see Frost put out of his misery though. I like how the stupid Nebraska fans are cheering like they’re beating Alabama. Delusions of yesteryear like the Quack fan base.
No, they love their team no matter what. That is one thing I will say Nebraska has right. They will pack that stadium and yell Go Big Red til they are blue in the face as long as their team is winning the game. The Ohio State game I went to when Riley was the HC that stadium was quiet by halftime. They are there to support the student athletes and give them a crowd no matter what, but they are questioning Scott Frost and he’s losing the fan bases trust in him.
Wow, when was the last time Oregon played in a game the backup QB for the opponent comes in to play in the 3rd quarter to rest their starter? That just happened today.
GA backup QB in now, oh boy. GA needs to stop playing cupcakes.
Hilarious to see distraught duck fans who just spent several thousand $$ to travel and witness that debacle. Welcome to reality duck fan, start getting used to the feeling because the mystique is gone. I doubt this is the last time they get boat raced this year.
4 of Oregon’s last 5 games they have been absolutely buttfucked. Twice by Utah, Oklahoma and now Georgia.
How does it feel duck fans to finally be an also ran?
It would not surprise me in the least to see BYU go into Eugene and win next weekend.
It would surprise me. I’ll
Bet you $1,000 byu won’t lose to oregon next weekend.
Considering they play EWU I’ll pass. I found this out shortly ago
I will hedge that bet and bet Oregon will not lose to BYU next weekend.
Eastern Washington next weekend. BYU in in 2 weeks.
B1G to Phil Knight after today….
“Hard pass”
Phil Knight – “but we look good getting embarrassed on national TV every week”
B1G needs a couple more patsies, this may be Oregon’s invitation to join
Look weak when you’re strong and look strong when your weak? I’m not buying it.
How bad must the other duck qbs be if they don’t switch qbs at this point just to see how he does?
Transfer portal will heat up by the time they get to the Atlanta airport….
I’m surprised Thompson hasn’t already transferred with Moore coming in next year. No real path for him unless Nix becomes a complete abomination. It just seems so pointless for Nix to be playing at Oregon right now lol. It’s a patchwork season where they won’t be playing for anything. It’s the epitome of why the transfer portal is such a joke.
Oregon has done this over the last decade.
Did Nix have an issue with Bryan Harsin? I know Harsin was a clusterfuck last year and probably should have lost his job. It seems like some of these higher-profile players transfer just to transfer. All it’s done is piss off some younger Quack QBs who may have talent that they will not be able to show in Eugene.
Reminds me of Noyer last year. Has a relationship with the OC, but didn’t perform in 3 quarters of work, pull him, not keep him in the game!
So #11 gets completely cornholed by #3? I won’t be surprised though when the media starts writing excuses and has them at #12 next week.
What will the excuse be, that they didn’t land as many 5-stars as Georgia?
Wow, during the Beav’s halftime highlights they said “Georgia just has better players”…………….
Well that was fun. Dan Lanning is making Mark Hlefrich look like a genius.
This Houston vs. UTSA game is crazy. Heading to ot
Double
3rd now. This game is nuts!
