I’m going to be out and about today so I’ll put the game thread up early.
Gooo Beavs!
Final prediction: 49-17 (Original score adjusted for Smith’s overly aggressive coaching errors)

First!
Bitches
Hoping for a shutout, but we should hold them out of the endzone.
52-6
damn this prediction was crazy close!
I’m just looking for great swammi’s sign in the student section. Better shotgun that beer
I’ll be in one of the bougie new WEST SIDE suites, drinking all the free liquor I can get my mitts on, I will be looking for my kiddo in the student section, I’m absolutely certain there will be no sign from swammi. I will report if I am wrong, but I won’t be.
#GoBougieBeavs
Going big! Jealous
I’ll wave to you from the old, semi- bougie club section. Go Beavs!
You see it??? My vision was blurry, too many touchdown shots
Strangely, no, no fucking sign to be seen. Stadium upgrades are fucking awesome though
Running clock: 45-10
55-0
You all realize Davis hasn’t scored on us since 1927… no?
Playing for pride today
May SEC and BIG teams lose today and may Comcast also give ESPN/Disney the middle finger.
63-3 today with a big f@#k an A!!!
Nebraska plays defense. Low key rooting for the huskers here.
Yeah, I hate to say it but I’m kind of rooting for #TPB today. I think maybe they’ve suffered enough. Matt Rhule may finally be the coach they need.
Not for long. He is always looking for something better.
Nebraska can’t get out of it own way. Their defense is playing tough.
Yeah, my comment hasn’t aged well after a couple of hours. Nebraska is just plain inept.
Beautiful day at Reser? Happy tailgating, reports from Reser appreciated!
Here’s hoping Gulbranson gets at least one quarter of PT…
Got my “Oregon Stater” yesterday (yeah, hard copy in rural eastern Oregon).
They made some last minute edits based on recent developments, opening statement very critical of “that school down south” and other deserters.
“Traditions Issue,” nice read
From USAToday:

Good fortune continues for the conference this week, currently constituted as the Pac-2, but for the next 10 months known as the Pacific-12. The league’s six ranked teams (Utah, Southern California, Colorado, Oregon State, Oregon, and Washington) should all win their games Saturday, while five others have at least a fighting chance with some intriguing non-conference matchups. Stanford is playing USC and is a four-touchdown underdog, so they are exempt from the previous sentence. With the number of outstanding quarterbacks in the conference, the Pac-12 can at least keep afloat in the national title picture, well into October. ”
Remember, Smith’s goal when he started? Make Beavers football nationally relevant.
Baylor playing like they have a defense again. Lead Utah 10-3 with 3 minutes left in the half.
Utah looks like garbage and Nebby needs a qb badly.
TPBs haven’t changed.
Really struggling against Charleston Southern. Yikes.
Well, I was referring to the Huskers. Are Clemson the new TPBs now?
Yes. Time to move on from Nebraska, I say.
Colorado fans rush the field after beating an unranked opponent as the home favorites? Has it been so long they don’t understand winning?
2-0 was not expected pre season….
Pac-2 + degenerate defectors + Utah are 15-0 against nonconference opponents
52-3 Beavs!
From my coug buddy.

Yesterday afternoon I had an interesting conversation over an after-golf beer with a big Mutt booster/Tyee club member. He told me one of the main reasons that Jen Cohen wanted the USC job because she has kids about to enter college and that private universities offer free tuition to the children of certain level of employees. USC told Cohen after her interviews) she would get the job, but only if she could help facilitate both the UW and Oregon to join the BIG10. This Mutt booster emphasized this scenerio was a condition of USC agreeing to hire Cohen.
While a person must always take everything said by a Mutt with a big grain of salt, the timing of this lines up with Cohen leaving the UW a couple of weeks after the Mutts and Oregon bolt for the Big10. If this sequence has any truth to it – does this constitute collusion? If yes, and it leads to damaging WSU and OSU – how do the attorneys get copies of all correspondence between the USC parties and Cohn/UW wi directly filing suit against either or both ent
Pretty funny state of affairs for Disney. There are games I would actually like to watch today, but I can’t because I don’t have access to ESPN. I can’t imagine how many other people are in the same boat.
Seems they’ve been caught offguard by the speed at which people have cut the cord.
still gotta write those fatty checks though LMAO
Sportssurge.net
51-3
I wonder if studentbeaver aka greatswammi thinks that Miami vs Texas A &M should be a sellout…not even close based on the tv shots.
IMO it has been underdiscussed how little GenZ cares about sports compared to past generations. While they’re in school, kids may go to games for the social event aspect. After they graduate all bets are off. We’re starting to work our way through that first batch of post-college GenZ’ers in their early to late 20s. This will only continue.
I’m telling you, esports are an untapped market on the college level. And people will subscribe to stream it, which is also the future.
Where better to start that than where an Nvidia supercomputer is parked?
Facts. I can talk my kids into going with me on occasion but aside from the one still in school, none attend on their own.
45-9
Some good games going on/ possible upsets.
Austin peay is tied with Tennessee
App st. Tied with North Carolina
Lafayette down by 7 to duke
SMU down by 4 to Oklahoma
Damn, Jam can’t even get a single carry for Ole Miss. such a waste of his talent, hope it was worth the payday.
Oregon took a payday to become the Beavs. This won’t end well for them. 7-8 win team in a good year.
They look small and slow vs Texas Tech. That can’t bode well.
Well I jinxed that, but I stand by this take.
Washington is going to smoke them
Cougs looking good against Wisconsin
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!!!!!!!!
Beavs avg 64 yd/carry early.
7-0 Beavs
That’s how you capitalize on a turnover!
…HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
I don’t like that pitch play.
It was totally unnecessary
The whole “quick handoff after a huge play” doesn’t really work in the redzone.
Slow down, huddle, and give the linemen a breather.
HE’S A BEAST!!!!!
Where’s your sign? Huh?
Keep looking…
Here’s your sign
-Bill Engvall
Melvin Jordan getting some quality reps. We’re going to need him come conference play.
Did anyone see if Hart is still injured?
Martinez was such an under rated recruit only because we got him early. So happy to have him.
Hole struggling with the Texas heat…
ucks with 11 penalties for 99 yds through 3 quarters.
They’re getting COMPLETELY outcoached.
Lanning is a fraud
Their OL clearly misses Mario’s influence, too. Really all they have on offense is swing passes to the flat and Nix scrambling.
At what point do you put the backups in?
After halftime
Please Texas Tech beat Hole
6 minute drive by ucks gives their D some much needed rest. Down 2 with over 14 minutes to go.
Impressed so far, don’t know what to do with my hands……..
Always found the shape of footballs ? to be interesting
Hold your sign up
I like how Bolden always runs to the sideline on returns, even if he outruns his blocker.
Hole losing would make my day
Common Texas Tech……….
Wouldn’t it be ironic if the ducks lost to Tyler Shough?
Stupid TT call to go for it on 4th and 2 on their own 30. Probably just gave the game away there.
TEXAS TECH PLEASE HOLD!!!!
Lanning is so overrated, why did they even give him an extension already? He hasn’t done anything but lose to both Washingon and us so far……
Refs bailing out Nike hard here
Come on Texas Tech…!
Lanning is so overrated
Alabama defense is getting your tourched all game by Texas.
Aight. This wildcat is catching us off guard.
I feel better about our kicking game with Sappington. Addicus Great name.
Sappington better than Hayes
Chiles might get to play an entire half.
C’mon Texas Tech, beat the TRAITORS!!!!
Cougs Cougin’ it.
DJU inaccuracy warts showing more today, sometimes he’s all arm and doesn’t use his lower body so it’s all over the place, it’s what got him benched for Klubnik in the ACC championship game last season. Will hurt the beavs in big moments against good teams if he can’t figure it out.
Yeah, 8/13 not horrible but should be higher % against UC Davis.
It’s not the ratio, he hasn’t had much opportunity to get goin with the kind of blowout the game is. But the way he’s missed on basic routes (he did a few times at SJSU too). Not down on the guy just noting the wart. Hope he settles in.
At least three of the passes were just him throwing it away… smartly.
Not sure what there was to evaluate, given the small sample.
The good news is that he misses such that the defender can’t make a play on the ball.
Oregon gets lucky yet again
I’m sure your relieved, GL the rest of the season
Utes and Ducks both look beatable today and both should have lost, WSU looks dangerous but same old Cougs cant close the deal.
Beavs defense looking real good.
Fumble recovery by Cougs might close the deal.
Tech blew it, and Oregon has a good kicker.
Dan Lanning is the most overrated coach in CFB
Did you bring your sign today?
Yes
Lots of borderline calls against TT at the end of that game. Nike bailed out.
Cougs are going to pull out the win. Good for them.
Arizona has the first loss for the conference, against the SEC.
Arizona finally ruins the ex-PAC’s unbeaten streak. 2PAC looking good, though!
Arizona come on
Who the hell is Wells Jr?
One of the freshman WR recruits.
Newell is a punishing runner.
Put in Ben.He deserves it.
Auburn playing in Berkley is weird
I should have stuck with 56. No way these guys score 17. Shutout looks in the bag. These dudes are awful.
Yup, today the scratch ticket failure was the TT coach going for it from his own 33………..wannabeav would be proud??
I want the shitout
Shutout*
Go eat some blackberries.
Prunes work wonders
I’m going to miss the PAC 12. SCREW THE TRAITORS!!!!
The MWC is so bad. If we keep winning this year does someone notice and invite us into a real conference?
First flag on Ivy comes with 9 minutes to play.
PUT IN BEN!!!!!!!!!!
Poor Ben…..
Beaver Joe, is this really you?
My money is on Chiles seeing some red next week. This Beaver team is good!
Pac 12 might have 8 teams in the Top 25 next week. Think UCLA gets in and I would think Wazzu earned a spot after beating Wisconsin.
Every conference game is going to be a dogfight, but this team will be a contender because of how balanced they are on offense and how well they tackle.
Beavs should be favored in every game until the UW game which is crazy to say but I really think it’s true if they remain healthy. Utah will be tough but it’s at home. Overall a coin flip but Beavs will likely be favored by a field goal. No self-inflicted wounds and the special season could be in sight.
We might be favored by Vegas but there are no slouches in this conference this year. Have to take it one game at a time.
Anyone catch home boys sign in the student section?
He told me earlier that he brought it but I didn’t see anything. Upload a pic bruh.
I’m sure he was in the student section, busily posting messages on AB while at the game holding his sign.
Ya, Way more fun than meeting chicks
I was not in attendance
Is anyone following the shit that is going down with Mel Tucker? Apparently, there has been an investigation going on for months as to whether that he had non-consensual phone sex with Brenda Tracy.
I thought for sure you were being sarcastic, but no, it’s actually real.
https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/investigations/2023/09/10/michigan-state-football-coach-sexual-harassment-claim/70679703007/
Me too. That’s crazy shit
Wow, yes Tucker comes off as a creep, but she doesnt come off sounding innocent either. Especially after they both deleted all of their text messages and it’s well documented that they both engaged in these conversations for extended periods of time based on phone records.
Do deleted text messages really no longer exist? I’m sure those messages could be retrieved if needed. Unless they used Whatsapp maybe?
Never thought I’d read about a college football coach’s “hard dick” in a newspaper story.
And then one of the people she confided in is dead, to top it all off?
I never believed her then and I don’t believe her now.
The police obviously believed her because charges were filed. There was a mountain of evidence. Charges ended up being dropped because she was too afraid to testify, which was not at all uncommon for women back then. She also had a boyfriend on the team which applied even more pressure not to testify and embarrass the team. Disgusting.
I agree, I thought it was odd that she just didn’t hang up on Tucker either. I dislike Tracy only for the fact that she went hard after Luke Heimlich without any knowledge of the facts or the legal nuisances of his case. She may be completely in the right here, Tucker seems like a dick (pun intended).
Left early,Not fun to watch a blowout in person.
Left early, sure thing
If you’re a student leaving a beautiful warm Summer evening college football game to go back to your apartment and write multiple Angrybeavs posts…I hate to tell you…you’re doing college wrong.
LMAO
Had to prepare for a after game party we were having. You might have noticed, not a lot of students left towards the end of the game.
I never comment here. But I read all the comments because I identify as an angrybeav.
However, if you are really a student, you have no idea how to do football games. The game is more important than the after party. The after party needs no preparation.
1989-1994 Beaver here.
What’s an unpopular dick like you doing having a party?
Was it boiling mushroom tea? Or perhaps pouring ever clear into a trash can of jungle juice? Trading mushrooms for cocaine with the road team players (first team All American and 10 year pro) after the game?
Not that I’ve done any or all of those things, but many people say it could happen.
I didn’t leave the sell-out crowd early.
What’s your problem?
He never even showed up
Had to prep at home for a party that was after the game.
Party of 1 needs no prep time
Sock puppet party!
Attendees: Kukla AND Ollie
So how much media attention will OSU/WSU get when both are ranked teams in a few weeks? Will ESPN and Fox just ignore it and let it get relegated to the PAC network?
Honestly, the coverage would be better on the PTN.
Wouldn’t surprise me if it does end up on P12N. The TV networks worked hard with the conferences to keep OSU/WSU out. Why would they want to showcase them now by putting them on national tv? lol
Week 2 and only one conference remains undefeated… let’s keep it rolling Pac2
The MWC is so bad. If we keep winning this year does someone notice and invite us into a real conference?
Go rogue
Well we now know based on common opponents that the ducks are approximately the same team quality as Wyoming.
Thats my hope. However it would be nice to rebuild pac IF and only IF it stays a power conference. Joining the mw is a death blow to all athletics
It’s ugly. Nevada lost to FCS Idaho by 27 effing points. Boise St. lost again. Hawaii barely beat something called Albany. Colorado St. is not competitive. Unfortunately, it’s not a good time to be joining the MWC.
Seems clear at this point the team views Chiles as the number 2. I wonder though if they stop trying to get him playing time with the idea of he is needed down the stretch they can still preserve the redshirt. Unless they think he is so good no reason to save it.
I used to think that way, preserve the redshirt and have him available for the stretch run.
Then, someone here set me straight by pointing out that he needs plenty of experience if he is gonna be #1 next year.
Add to that the notion that he’ll get to the NFL before his eligibility runs out.
I think we’ll see him in several games this season.
I agree to an extent but if he ends up playing in 5 or 6 games I’m not sure that is a ton more experience than the 4 with a redshirt. I don’t think it is a blunder or anything if they don’t preserve it but if Tua stays healthy I think there will be enough close games that you might as well preserve it.
Not sure why I said Tua, DJ I mean, was looking at my fantasy team
I think there is a significant difference in the teaching opportunities involved in 6 game appearances vs 4. Film to review and time to absorb and put into practice the advice from coaches.
Trick is getting him reps if DJU has things rolling and the game is tight.
Commentators mentioned during the game broadcast about how OSU should do some sort of package for Chiles this season. Bring him into games in certain situations.
I can’t think of a situation that I’d put 17 year old Chiles in instead of 250# DJ, all things being equal. If the game matters and DJ is in control he stays in.
I would not be surprised if they do not redshirt him, nor if he runs plays with the first team during games because he’s lethal in the RPO game.
He’s the next Dennis Dixon. That’s how good his running ability is.
I don’t think Aidan is thinking 5 years, so why redshirt? I’d be surprised if we get 4 from
him.
That’s actually a pretty accurate comparison. Dixon was pretty dynamic.
Will be interesting to see. He only gets 2 more games to play before his redshirt can no longer be saved. If they blow out SDSU this weekend does he play? If so that leaves 1 PAC 12 game for him to appear in
Burn that redshirt. Play like everything is on fire. It literally is. The future is no guarantee. If there ever was a year to go all in, this is the time.
Under normal circumstances I’d want to retain that redshirt at all costs, but fuck that at this point. Get him as many reps as possible this year.
It’s so nice to see a PREPARED team, that EXECUTES w/ CONSISTENCY in these nonconference games!
It wasn’t that long ago when we were not as confident this early in the season; it bodes well.
There will be challenges as always, but I believe in this team’s ability to place themselves where they need to be to overcome them.
I agree. It’s still hard to tell how good they are, but they’re definitely executing well and playing like a mature team.
Speaking of executing well, didja see the penalty numbers for swoosh yesterday?
124 yds. Undisciplined and unsurprising.
Kinda wish Ben got some reps. I feel he deserved a series or two considering he was 9-1 as a starter with us last year and this game would have probably ben (pun intended) his last chance to play this year barring any catastrophes with DJ or Chiles…..
He stayed here knowing this is how it would be.
Chiles needs to be ready and up to speed in case DJ gets dinged.
He was 7-1.
But who’s counting?
Eight Pac-12 teams in the AP Top 25
Since when did the CW network start televising P-5 football games again? I remember 20 years ago or so they had some affiliation with the P-10 because I could watch the P-10 game of the week on the CW network in Salt Lake.
Since Bally’s went Belly’s Up, and the ACC needed a quick landing spot.
So ACC affiliated, yeah it was the Pitt game that was on. Are they paying any media rights to the ACC?
I don’t think UC Davis is as good as San Jose but I feel like OSU, which didn’t have many cobwebs the first game, looked even less rusty in yesterday’s game. We looked even better on both sides of the ball. I’m very happy that second string got to play a half and noticed they looked really good too. Nice to see there is that depth. And the lawyer
It is just sickening to see the PAC as strong as it ever has been and OSU looking as strong as it ever has looked and this is the last year. Tragic.
*and the lawyer = my iPhone picking up tv in background lol. But with that go OSU / WSU lawyers!
UC Davis (which is a top 20 FCS team) would get killed by SJSU, as they are probably a top 3 MWC team this year. SDSU should be a bit of a step up, but similar to SJSU.
We’ll know for sure if this team is for real in a couple of weeks in Pullman.
I agree. That tip to Pullman is going to be a tough one. Just like Corvallis it’s a tough place to play. Just ask Wisconsin this season or Oregon and Utah who were lucky to get out of there with wins last season.
Thats one of those road game where you just do whatever you need to do to win the game. Doesn’t need to be pretty. Just win baby!!
Honestly I feel like we haven’t even gotten a great look at what DJU and our 1st team can truly do yet so far, because our 2nd team and 3rd team players have been getting some significant snaps as well.
Glad JS is playing Chiles exclusively during mop up time. He’s clearly better than BG and earned the PT. Glad they are investing in future and not trying to keep everyone happy.
We’ve gotta hope a team like Michigan State doesnt throw around some crazy $80-100m contract offer to Smith and Co.
Somebody is going to try to poach him before the season is over. Wonder what the dollar amount is that he can’t ignore?
OSU marketing team needs to combine the “We ain’t down yet!” and “Launch it!” as the backbone to a hype video for the team
And the program overall in light of what has been happening to the PAC12.
I’d expect JS to leave in due time but I think he has some unfinished business before then.
too small time, they will after lanning, and bail out hole
wouldn’t be funny if msu hired prime
Smith will not leave in the middle of OSU’s darkest hour. That would be like Churchill fleeing England in 1941. He’ll ensure the program navigates this next phase, whatever that may look like.
The odds of Smith coaching the Beavs next year is sub 1%.
That’s if we’re in the MWC. If somehow we wind up in the Big 12 he’d stay.
Disagree. I’m sure he’ll receive offers but Smith has always seemed to me like a guy who values loyalty over money (rare I know…..). He already makes more money than any person ever needs. This isn’t to say I think Smith wouldn’t even consider bigger offers. I’m sure he will and I would expect anyone in his position to do the same. But leaving was always going to be hard for Smith. To do it now…..seems almost unthinkable.
Wager?
I don’t think it’s that he values “loyalty” above all else. I feel like its apparent in his comments over the years, however understated and private he comes across, that he values his relationship with his wife and family, nurturing his kids and their experience in growing through school and community, and ultimately, his relationship with god, above all other things.
I’m not saying he won’t take an opportunity to greener pastures and get out of the PAC-2 mess, I think he would feel comfortable and confident to leave the Beavs in Bray’s hands if that be the case. But, he’s not going to find a better opportunity in the country that will afford him the life-balance and ability to prioritize the things that are most valued to him than Corvallis, and I think he knows that very well.
Both Riley and Erickson publicly regret having left OSU so maybe Smith will think similar.
Angry really is going to push the whole “Smith is gone after this season” narrative this whole season, isn’t he? It’s getting old already and we are only 2 games into the season.
When it comes to football, I think he values competition more than anything else. There is no way he stays. The MWC is just a step up from high school football.
Well said
If he did move, nobody could fault him. And it wouldnt be just about him but also his assistants and their futures.
They’re busting their asses and performing at a high level and they’re not doing it just because they want to be part of a feel good story.
If you were really good at coaching college players, would you want to go backwards and coach glorified high school players? Of course not. And of course we can’t fault him for that reason. I’d almost feel guilty and bad if he stayed. He’d be putting his career in reverse.
In the most ideal MWC scenario (and also the most unlikely, I get that):
The Pac-2 are able to retain the Pac-12 assets and branding and are able to facilitate a “reverse” merger with the MWC with Gloria taking the reins, and they strike a new media rights deal as a newly reformed Pac-14 (Apple?). This likely increases the revenue for all incoming MWC schools by 5+ million (10ish million total), and also puts millions more viewers on their products.
For at least the next 2 years, this new Pac-14 retains “Power 5” status, even though the quality of football hasn’t and likely isn’t there from top to bottom in the near future.
This is extremely helpful for the deep stragglers like Nevada and Utah State (who had an 11 win season and beat us handily in a bowl game two years ago). This is how the “little guys” are able to “invest” in their programs and facilities and climb the ladder, just as OSU/WSU have done over the last decades in the Pac.
In this scenario, it’s a great opportunity for the strongest of the MWC to get stronger (Fresno, Boise, SDSU) and build their brands and recruit from a larger audience, and for those that are far behind to catch up (Nev, USU, SJSU, WYO), and perhaps even a sleeping giant to wake the F up and get serious about tapping into their potential (UNLV). Nevada might even be able to renovate their high-school looking stadium into something more… community college. Even still, they beat us fair-and-square just a handful of years ago.
It also comes with the addition of a world-class service academy with an immaculate campus and facilities (Air Force).
OSU/WSU get to be the biggest fish in the pond by a wide-margin and probably punch their ticket to the new expanded 12-team playoff for at least the next 2 years, but perhaps even 4-6, who knows? This of course, comes with a huge payout.
And then in 2027 when the B1G and SEC break apart from the rest and leave their stragglers behind to form the new football-only minor-league NFL conference that competes for it’s own national championship and the rest of the college athletics world has to totally re-invent itself, the Pac-14 is well-established and ready to lead in that new reality with a strong regional conference with shared values and culture, it’s own Network, and a forward-looking media rights deal.
MOST of that probably won’t come true, but even if only some of it does, it isn’t THE WORST outcome for OSU/WSU. It could actually be seen as a massive opportunity and windfall, especially from a group of coaches like what JS has assembled at OSU that cares so much about things not football (family, quality of life, church, etc).
We will probably know another piece of the puzzle tomorrow depending on how the courts react to the the restraining order.
Persistence, patience, and a forward-looking perspective is key for all involved (even fans).
It could happen. We have to see what opportunities pop up after this season. Michigan State will likely be looking for a new coach.
I don’t think he would jump to the NFL.
You’ve been riding Kellen Moore’s jock for years and now he’s a MW high school player?
My guess is JS would have some quality talks with DE and Chris Petersen if an big offer came.
Peterson went from BSU to UW. Down-grading to MWC isn’t going to be a career ender.
Lol, he’s not going anywhere.
His buyout is a paltry $6m as well. When I saw that last year I couldn’t believe it.
Was the defensive line a little more tough than SJSU? Seemed like Beavs had more issues getting through. DJU getting tackled for loss. Just seemed at times Beavers couldn’t punch it through.
Anyone know when the speakers on the new side will be working. At least on the top level, they were not. The speaker setup at the end zone gave base in the music and such, but could hardly hear anything the announcer was saying. Kind of made for a less appealing live game experience. Everything else about the new side was amazing.
I dunno but the light shows after the touchdowns and between quarters were cool. LEDs are kinda nice.
Yes the lights were awesome.
How were the acoustics? Was it loud?
Elcano said on Twitter tbd
Beavs open -21.5 over SDSU. I’d bet they cover that. Aztecs are not very good.
They have significant QB issues. Beavs 38-13
If they have significant qb issues, I’d hope we are looking at another possible or near shutout. 13 points means 3 scoring opportunities for an inept offense. I don’t see it happening with this defense.
Beavs should roll again 45-3
The TD will come against the second stringers
They do have a mobile qb that’s very fast unless he got hurt. I could see bray using a similar game plan as the one used against sju.
Odds of getting a TRO tomorrow?
Very high. 90%
Genuine, honest question: am I the only one who hasn’t been overly impressed by the team so far? I said that by the end of the SJSU game I was feeling good about this team, but I’ve taken a step back in confidence after UC Davis. I know that sounds stupid considering how easily the Beavs handled them, but there are certain things that have me concerned, especially on defense.
Even though they had, what, a dozen TFLs, the front seven still looked to me like they lack explosiveness and speed. They dominated and contained the line of scrimmage and edges well against an FCS opponent, but I’m still not sold they have the athleticism and speed to do that against PAC-12 teams. The DBs have been solid and are the group I feel best about, but again, I’m not sure if they’ll maintain their level of play in conference.
I think yesterday showed glimpses that OSU not getting a big time WR transfer in the portal was a huge miss. Bolden and Gould are great, but when you takeaway one, the receiving corps is very limited. I’m surprised DJ didn’t throw to the TEs more. Hopefully the lack of WR depth doesn’t haunt them in conference play. Speaking of DJ, I think we saw a bit of when he isn’t “on” his game. Some more missed and overthrows that should’ve been completed. The good thing is that when DJ misses his WR, he also misses the DB. Those misses probably would’ve been INTs by Beaver QBs of the past several years. The O-Line and run game are still great, so no concern there. Just hoping the inconsistencies of the pass game don’t bite the Beavs in big situations.
Seeing how well the mid and upper teams in the PAC have played so far for the most part, has me doomering that this will be a 7-8 win season. Like people have already mentioned, there aren’t going to be any easy games. I think even Arizona and CAL on the road will be challenging, not to mention Wazzu and Colorado. I know it’s only been two games, but I’m not feeling as good or hopeful as I was before the season started. The over all progression of the team, so far, hasn’t been as much as I expected, while other teams in conference have taken a larger step forward than I thought.
I’m hoping I’m completely off base and being overly pessimistic by underrating OSU’s play/ability and overrating the rest of the PAC’s, and they’ll put to rest many of my concerns starting at Wazzu. GO BEAVS!
For one, what they’ve showed on offense is vanilla. No need to show more. So, I think you’ll see more creativity and use of TEs and RBs in passing game. I think our WRs are going to be really good. OL will make DJU better with pass protection and ability to run ball to get in short yardage 3rd downs. On D, we’ve also been very vanilla playing base schemes and sets. DL is playing to contain and stop run. I think you’ll see Bray begin to mix it up more once league play starts. I’m not concerned about our D although it may be a slight drop off from last year. The WSU game is going to be a huge test but I actually think the Beavs are good enough to dominate the cougs. Beavs should score at least 30 points in every game this year and I doubt the cougs can score 30 on Beavs. Season will come down to staying healthy and winning close games. Since the conference is so strong, I’m predicting 10-2 but the team is better than I expected based on 2 games. I all goes well, I think this team could go 12-0.
Question, if Beavs go 12-0 and lose to 12-0 USC in P12 championship, do they have a shot at CFP? I’m guessing any 1 loss team from SEC, ACC, or B10 would get the nod over Beavs.
Zero percent chance the Beavs get a CFP invite with 1 loss. They’d take a 2 loss SEC/B1G team or Notre Dame.
I haven’t seen anything to be concerned about, but I also haven’t seen anything to be overly optimistic about. It’s really hard to judge when they play significantly lesser competition. I also think it trips you up a bit when you practice against highly skilled players and then play a less-skilled team because you’re anticipating moves, speed, strength, and decisions that don’t actually occur. We won’t really know what we have until we go to Pullman.
I had the same feeling to a point. Going to a lower level team you presume the talent goes down. There were times I thought we should have done better. Maybe UCD has a better defense than CSUS. In some plays the Beavs had trouble with tackles in the backfield. Will be interesting to see San Diego. Seems like last 2 games we were running up the middle a lot. Maybe some more runs around the ends. Hopefully, the coaches fix all the little things before the conference. I’m just glad we haven’t played anyone like Michigan or Ohio State.
I’m wondering if the current polls influence the playoff polls. Because we have been put in a tough spot. If we were to win out at this point, our highest rank would be #6.
If we played a team and the game was still in question the playbook would be opened up. Until then there’s no reason to think this team isn’t very good. It’s a good thing to see that they haven’t had to do so and it just helps them down the road because of it.
Thanks, that’s a good point.
I haven’t watched a Colorado bison game but at the suggestion of someone here, I started watching the prime experiment while at jsu. In the 2nd episode they are playing gambling I think their second game and the game is close at the half, Dionne tells his coaches to open the whole playbook. The whole playbook gold nothing back. Different league and circumstances but seems like a strange thing to do, made me wonder if he has overplayed his hand with the bison. And appreciate how conservative niner is while working through the early games.
There are currently 8 teams ranked in the PAC 12. OSU plays 6 of those teams. Not counting PAC 12 Championship game. Trust me, if OSU wins out, they will be higher than 6th.
The speed on defense (or lack of) does concern me. The physicality and tackling is there. We’re just gonna have to wait and see.

Hearing is supposed to be finished by 2pm and the Comcast debt is apparently $50M, which would nullify the NCAA tourney credits.
Also, SEC commish Sankey says the NCAA rules for conference size, eligibility, etc don’t necessarily apply to the CFP
If they pull that shit sounds like another lawsuit. I wonder if the strategy will end up being, be a big enough pain in the ass through litigation and bad PR that the powers that be quietly move us to the BIG12 to make this shit show go away.
The Comcast payment should not nullify the NCAA tourney credits. One is a payment due immediately (or soon) pro rata by all 12 current conference members. The other are staggered, multi-year payments owed to the conference (and thus to its members) at the time of receipt, at which time 10 of the current 12 members will no longer be part of the conference and thus shouldn’t be eligible for said credits.
The Comcast debt sounds like it’s owed by the conference, not the members. If 2PAC vote out the others, they would be stuck with the debt.
He’s just saying that the dollar amounts offset, so there isn’t equity to distribute. We’ve yet to see a formal financial statement for the conference but I’ve always been dubious that the conference had significant Net Assets (Wealth) after all Assets and Liabilities are accounted for.
So you’re saying we should get to keep revenue earned by all 12 members but we shouldn’t have to pay debt accrued by all 12 members?
That definitely won’t be happening haha.
A revenue stream that will get paid out 5+ years from now should be paid to long-since-departed members? No. And I’d be surprised if there’s a precedent for that.
IIRC the verbage is payments are received by the pac conference and distributed to it’s members. With 10 teams leaving there are only two members to receive such payments
The two have nothing to do with each other.
The Comcast debt will be withheld from their distributions to the conference by the end of the contract.
Hard to tell with only pancake opponents. WSU looked so good against Wis but maybe it was the level of competition
Wisconsin isn’t good. WSU is better than average, probably a 7-8 win team, but their MO is the same. They simply don’t beat quality teams that play power football well.
In essence, they ‘coug it’
Wisconsin is moving from being a dominant run team to an air raid offense which is a completely different thing from what they’ve done in the past which is kind of puzzling. They just don’t have the roster for it yet. That being said I agree they’re probably a decent team that are going to have a lesser season than they’re used to because of scheme change. No one really knows too much until conference play starts.
I think the hand-wringing over some elements of this team fall back to Riley PTSD.
We all got used to Riley needing to play starters for the entire game against these types of teams and still barely winning such games or losing a few. Riley’s early season non conference record is disastrous and the season was often lost by conference play. I remember far too many seasons with early games essentially being the time to figure out who is even going to be key contributors.
What JS has been able to do is completely discard the Riley approach. JS has been able to establish culture/identity/1st, 2nd, 3rd string all ny the end of camp. His approach to these games has been to get true game experience for starters and run basic stuff at real game speed and tackling, then the 2nd and 3rd string guys are all getting plenty of reps beyond simply garbage time which was often all the Riley eta accomplished. JS is in the process of developing experienced backups across the board, including Chiles.
No worries and I’m Bray we trust!
Have their been any sightings of our transfer OLB from Wyoming or the Juco WR Jamai East?
Has either played?
East had a catch I think.
https://osubeavers.com/sports/football/stats/2023/uc-davis/boxscore/19937
Has the list of which guys saw action in the game. Omotosho did not play. East with one catch for 10 yards
I saw Omotosho posted something the other day, like an hourglass emoji and a message “…been here before…”
Wonder if he’s injured or something?
Ya I was waiting to see him. It’s kind of hard with not knowing everyone’s number yet. Saw that Takari hickle got a sack or was in on one.
East had at least one catch in the game vs UC Davis
I happened to be right near the Cal Davis campus yesterday while the game was going on up in Corvallis, so ended up listening to the 1st half on their local radio.
Was pretty interesting to hear the game from that perspective. Their radio team was gushing about how great of a night it was up in Corvallis and how great the atmosphere was there. They were very complementary of the team and the crowd. It was almost like they were OSU fans and just happy to have a chance to play against OSU.
Game review
– Did not see a studentbeaver sign at all in the student section.
– All the tickets were sold but at least 10% didn’t show up
– New lights shows will definitely result in a seizure for someone. Still needs some work on sequencing but that’s a minor complaint.
– Pre 4th quarter song needs work, the back in black is fine but it’s best to follow up with the fight song or the osu fight fight fight chant instead of the jamming together pump up songs.
– New side is very nice. What’s with the one escalator though?
– Did I miss a bigger men’s bathroom? The one I went into was the size you’d find in a restaurant, not a stadium.
– Still working through all the food options but the ones I had were good.
As for the game
– Why the game feels a little disappointing? Beavs outmatched them at every spot. Felt like they should have scored at will. Two 3 and outs by the starters was not a great feeling.
– Obviously a very vanilla playbook. Seemed like they were testing things out.
– Kicked the FG where I think they would go for it in a conference game
– Watched Sappington warmup. Saw him leave a couple 45yarders well short but then drill a couple through. The difference was the trajectory. Not sure the ones he made would clear the line by that much. So maybe the coaches know his longer kicks are more susceptible to blocks. His longer kicks did go through with a lot of room to spare.
– DJU looked a little tight, missed a couple throws. Nothing to be very concerned about. Did see him warmup before the second half, just tossing 50 yard missiles. Most QBs throw out to 20 yards or so.
– Saw DJ carrying and using a clipboard as backup QBs would do in the second half. Just a fun image.
– Chiles made the most of his half of work. Looked exactly like he needed to. Competent. JS did say Chiles got in over BG due to the circumstances. If the game is on the line and DJU is out, I’ve said and still believe BG would get the call first.
– Oline had a surprising couple of miscues resulting in a sack and another that DJU was able to flip a completion.
– Tongue could be a nice weapon. Seems to have settled into his new position pretty well. Has ability to be a speed rusher and an above avg cover LB.
– Always fascinating to see which players don’t get action in these games. Says a lot.
Vegas now realizes the Beavs are more than expected with the -23.5 line. That’s a healthy amount of respect.
Expecting more of the same vs SDSU. Bludgeon the team with physical play upfront. Vanilla play calling again
Which ones didn’t get playing time? Omotosho was suited up but I didn’t hear his name on radio, and Gould was out
If the game is on the line, and DJU can’t play, Chiles will get the call. No doubt in my mind.
Top 5 defensive players by PFF grades this season:
Hickle (low snap count)
Oladapo
Robinson
Arnold
Tongue
We had a lot of first-team guys play surprisingly few snaps against UCD.
Lol.
