Forget the stupid fake field goal attempt against Arizona. There was a whole other half to play well and win. The difference just happened to be 3 points. Not enough running, too much,’let’s let DJ try again.”

Anybody want to do another deep dive discussion on that play. Let’s have a milli-second by milli-second breakdown of where the play broke down, then cause-effect analysis on the season, ramifications and what to talking more about can do for our psychological stability. ;)

  2. Beavs may have a fake fg hangover but the Prime Buffs have a jewelry hangover. They have been more occupied by their collective stolen gold jewelry than figuring out how to block d linemen.

My optimism says big focus bounce back by the Beavs leads to a 48-24 win.
My skeptical side says JS hasn’t learned anything and we are in for more heartburn 45-42 Beavs
My despairing aide knows it could easily be a defensive call lapse by the Beavs and the game gets out of hand by halftime…45-28 Buffs

I’ll go optimistic but cautioned by my skepticism

  3. Get through this week with a W, and I’m still somewhat confident we can go into the Civil War with a shot at the PAC-12 title game. This has been a completely different team on the road compared to home over the last 3 years.

    • It’s very possible.

But some decisions make it sketchy, if the coaches continue them.

We need to march into the stadium with control, and then we need to back it up.

My crystal ball says the Beavs D will get into the backfield a lot today, but they will over-pursue and let Sanders pick up big chunks of yardage with his legs. Buffs D will stack the box to prevent the run, and of course we will submit and force DJ to win with his arm, but the altitude fucks up his accuracy. Beavs lose another winnable game on the road and drop out of the top 25. Beaver fans are slapped back into the reality that the MWC is our destiny.

    Prove me wrong, Beavs.

They need this win so badly tonight. I seriously doubt a win vs UW (despite being in Corvallis) and Yucks will score a lot with bucky and Franklin.

    • Sounds like Dabo’s rant got them fired up. They’re not a bad team, they played FSU tough. It just wasn’t all DJ’s fault that they are no longer a playoff-caliber team.

  5. This game will be a real test for the program. The psychological damage from the AZ debacle is significant IMO. Beavs do still control their own destiny though so the season is still salvageable. If they don’t get the win tonight though, I think we’ll be approaching full meltdown mode.

  6. Just run the ball and it will all work out. Play like you expect a shootout and that’s what you will get. No less than 30 running plays with Martinez getting 20-25 touches.

    • We’re big USC, UCLA, and Utah fans. If they can take out Washington, Oregon, and Arizona down the stretch and the Beavs win out, they’ll end up in the P12 title game against USC or Washington because of tie-breakers over Utah/UCLA.

  7. Last week threw me into such a bummer. I’m just not confident with this team even though I believe they have the tools to succeed. My concern for tonight is we never seem to do well against a good QB threat. I’ve watched Sanders this year. I think the kid is legit and is why they have had any success this year. He takes a beating but keeps on going. The key tonight is to take away his options then put a spy on him to stop him from running away from us. The game rest on our defense.

    • I know he’s mobile and been sacked a lot but he’s still about negative 86 yards on the season. I haven’t watched them hardly but seems more of a threat to run but not actually run too much but that is just off of stats.

  8. 2
    3

Wouldn’t we rather want UW to beat USC rather than USC beat UW? If UW wins tonight, and we by some miracle win out, then we’d rematch them in the conference title game.

3 teams ahead of the Beavs already lost today: NotreDame/Mizzou/Oklahoma

Either Alabama or LSU are also guaranteed to lose. Beavs could puck up 4 spots potentially with a convincing win today and be around 12.
Gotta keep winning for bowl status

  10. I didn’t get to watch last game (why we lost). Looks like Smith’s terrible fake Fg call and field position were the differences in the game. I could only watch the highlights which don’t tell the story but I saw multiple punt returns to set them up with a short field. I saw the bad roughing the passer call. The fake fg play was a wasted good play that would’ve worked in the right situation. Instead of using it on a fg try that isn’t the last play of the half and with appropriate distance to the first down marker he calls it way to far and is the last play. It’s just and inexcusable call there that cost them the game. Looking at the stats we should’ve won.

Moving onto Colorado I hope we see them bounce back like they did against Utah. Im more nervous about this game then I should have to be. The coaches need to get out of their way and put them in the right situation to win. I hope to see a lot running especially from Martinez. Also lots of short crossing routes that other teams have used very effectively against them and their man defense. With our speed at receiver if DJU can hit them in stride they can get a lot of high percentage chunk plays possibly more.

Any news if cooper or Thomas are going to play?

    • 2
      1

Yeah. I’m not sure we appreciate the gravity of that play call yet. It literally has the potential to impact Smith’s career. If the Beavs end up with 4 or 5 losses I think it really can be traced back to that call and his stock will have dropped massively. I’ve said multiple times that I believe Smith is a top 10 coach in terms of scheme and player development. But he made a decision that could potentially lose a locker room (on top of multiple questionable in game decisions over the last few seasons). IMO it isn’t hyperbole to say it has the potential to cost him millions of dollars.

    • Read a tweet that Cooper and Hodgins were participating in pre-game warm-ups. Looks like both will play. No word on Leavengood or Thomas

  11. FWIW: The USC band was just playing “Johnny Q ” by the Crazy Eights. Someone out there will remember them (former OSU band members).

  12. Official have the choice, call it a fumble and replay it, or blow it dead and dont call it a fumble and then replay doesnt allow you to show possession.
So of course they blow it dead.

    • Ya I was thinking the same thing. Martinez bounced outside what caused it but he needs to just let go and let Martinez make a play.

  13. Fenwick seems lost and Chiles looked a lot better than DJ…
Defense looks adequate so far though. Colorado will make big plays if you let them hang around though. Beavs need to be up 2 scores by halftime, which means it will be tied shortly.

  14. A big weakness offensively is the Beavers have no running back who is much of a threat in the passing game. They never replaced Trey Lowe and it shows. Throw was a little high but Fenwick should have caught it.

  15. Does Newell bang all the coaches’ wives and so he’s always in the dog house? How can a guy that scored 2 td’s in the most significant time he’s ever played to get that Civil War win never see the field? Fenwick looks like he’d rather be on the couch. Fumbles. Batted ball (not a great throw but definitely one most guys would catch). Ridiculous

    • I hate P-12 officials and their spastic knee-jerk calls. Take a close look, most of the contact was by the receiver. Stop inserting yourselves into the game and let the game flow.

      • That was clear pass interference once I saw the replay. He wrapped him up before the ball was there. On first glance it looked like BS.

  16. Colorado’s offensive line is pitiful. This is far and away the best the front 7 and the pass rush in particular has looked all season. If the Beavers don’t beat themselves the rest of this one, there’s no reason they shouldn’t win by at least 17

    • Am I the only one who thinks that Martinez has been a tick less explosive this year? Getting stopped a lot on tackles he would break last year?

  17. Just bench DJ already and play Chiles. I get why they don’t want to play Chiles since he is 100% guaranteed to transfer. Thus, we need to disband our program.

  18. What in the hell is Bolden doing there? DJ scrambling and he doesn’t fight to get open at all. Bolden and Gould when they aren’t open initially basically never fight to get open. They have got to upgrade the WR position. Chiles probably picks up 7-8 yards there cause he’s more athletic obviously but man, they got to get bigger and stronger at the WR position

  19. If DJ knows that a lot of blitzes are coming he freezes and doesn’t look downfield at all.
Martinez and Fenwick are both looking iffy. I wonder if Lindgrens insistence on balance is lost the fire for Martinez over the course of the year. He has great opportunities in some
Games to just run crazy but they haven’t tried it yet, so he loses interest.

    • Martinez has battled some injury issues all season. Has left games multiple times and you can see he’s not the same. I’m betting after the season they announce he played with multiple injuries. He’s definitely not healthy

    • He’s inconsistent. Some plays he processes super quickly, other times he stares down one receiver. If he ever gets his mental issues worked out, he’d be a great QB.

If anybody watched Levis on Thursday, it was an impressive showing, he makes his read and throws, doesn’t second guess it.

    • Feels like he’s still not 100% comfortable in the system and is thinking too many plays instead of just playing. But I never watched any Clemson so maybe he’s always played that way

  20. The field is crap tonight. Chunks in players helmets after plays and guys slipping all over. Wonder if a cleat change would help.

  21. These sacks are killing the offense. No idea why CU’s defense has been so disruptive, they haven’t stopped anyone all year. How embarrassing for the offense.

  22. I need to keep reminding myself these are 18-22 year olds. This is some sloppy football.
Oh, but go ahead and pass it to the RBs if it will be more like that

  23. 3
    3

Guys, I’m thinking we’re actually not a good team. Maybe avg? This is awful, awful football. Road games aren’t this hard. Sure, you’d rather play at home but road games aren’t this hard. We’re just avg. We play like this the rest of the year and we’ll be lucky to have 7 wins. Just garbage football. Bad coaching. Lingren is absolute garbage. So predictable. Throw on 1st. Run on 2nd. Then have 3rd and long. Someone needs to light the whole offense on fire during halftime and of not, start pulling guys and sit them on the bench. No better motivation than getting your playing time taken away and watching your replacement play their ass off.

    • I have a similar thought. Maybe a bit above average normally, with the potential to be good. But rarely meeting that potential.
The crowd as a 12th man at Reser really is a thing and helps the team.

      • The Buff’s offense has moved the ball most of the season, so it was encouraging to see how well the defense played in the first half, but then the offense lays an egg until Prime’s screw-up. Weird game so far.

    • We’re a decent team. Not good, just decent.

Losing two NFL corners, a third down back in Griffin, Lindsay/Harrison, and Speights really hurt this team. Lindgren isn’t using as much motion this year. The receiver sets looks predictable (no stacked formations). Newell and Noga are not getting snaps now.

    • We could do more creative gimmicky plays like usc. Those backfire every now and then. Are they worth it? Don’t we complain that we don’t run the ball enough? There are many average teams. It’s hard to be above average and win most games.

  24. 2
    1

I don’t have many complaints about the in-game coaching in this game. It’s been a well coached game. Mostly just been players not executing but they gotta find a way to get the players ready to go in these road games cause they should have won last week and should be up big in this one. Colorado’s O-line stinks but really encouraging how well the defense has tackled in space and covered. Just catch the damn ball and not gift them turnovers and this is a win

    • Ya it’s the players just not making plays. That punt return by Gould where he caught it with his knee down is a perfect example of how they’ve been playing.

The defense has been playing good. I think I saw that their offense averages like 34 points a game. We just never can put all the facets of the game together at once.

  25. Fuaga got a hold call for being better at football than the D-lineman for Colorado lol. Absolutely terrible call

  26. The Arizona loss hurts because of the recency… but that’s a good football team. WSU may be on their way to 8 straight losses and 4-8. That is proving to be one of the worst and most devastating losses in Oregon State football history…

    • Anything can happen early in a season. Opponents are healthy, they haven’t quit on their coach yet/coach hasn’t made it clear and obvious he’s leaving, etc. etc.

      • But it was the very next week that their season went into the gutter. They haven’t looked remotely competitive since they beat us. That’s why it’s so, so painful.

          • Wisconsin is 5-4. That UCLA game was not as close as the score indicates. They were outgained 471-216 and had 4 turnovers. 10 of their points were gifted from Moore INT’s (one was a pick six at the goal line)
They’re simply not a good football team and it was a bad loss. I knew it at that time and it’s even more evident now.

          • It wasn’t a bad loss, in that they played out of their minds in that game. If Kelly drops just one flying one-handed off-hand bomb, we win that game.

    • Someone has to check Trent Bray’s cash app for that performance. Suspiciously, Wazzu hasn’t come close to that effort offensively since

  27. 7
    1

Fuaga gets a holding call for simply rag-dolling his defender.

    Such a ridiculous call.

Meanwhile, we seem to be grinding, which is noted by the announcers, because it looks like football, and it’s easy to call.

  28. 3
    2

JS cannot be sought after by anyone.
Been watching football for decades and haven’t seen this ridiculous decision making…ever.

    • I have, watch Oregon or in the NFL with the Chargers. Shake my head every time they lose.

To me, I hate that they disregard momentum. We had all the momentum and now we just gave it back to Colorado with that call. 2pts doesn’t do us any good.

    • A nice 7.5 minute drive for 6 should have been a back breaker, but then scratch ticket strikes and now Buffs have life. BIG JIM and Parker can’t believe the call to go for 2 when 1 was already on the board.

  29. 3
    2

What the fuck is wrong with Smith???? If you look at your numbers sheet, there is no fucking difference between an 18 or a 19-point lead.

  30. Probably won’t matter this game since Colorado is a Mountain West team, but Smith continues to embarrass himself. I’m very dubious that he’d get an offer from another major program now.

    • Strategically it makes no sense, so it’s just bizarre. Angry is right it’s some kind of mental thing and he just can’t help himself.

    • Colorado would have needed to get at least 2 TDS and 2 two point conversions to go with a field goal to tie it. From the 1 1/2 yard line, I get his thinking

  31. Chomping at the bit to get that two point conversion called?
Was that one on the ply sheet and we needed to get it into the film?
Can Cookus stop asking to do these horrible gambles
    On special
    Teams?

  32. Boosters need to hire a guy to stand next to Smith and absolutely bitch slap him every time he gets the itch to roll the dice.

  33. 8
    4

I called this shit 5 years ago. It was bad then. People made excuses that it was because we had no talent, no kicker, etc. It turns out I was correct we just have a degenerate John madden football playing gambler.

    • 5
      1

Still rather have him than any other coach we could have got. He’s turned us into a contender. Would you rather have Riley or Andersen back? I hope that’s not what your saying.

  34. These are the momentum swings that just kill this team. It’s ridiculous. I don’t understand this staff. If the coaches won’t learn from their mistakes, how can you expect and demand your players learn from them? I just don’t get it

    • You know they are already practicing them. No one can imagine what they will come up with next.

The onside kick at Cal was concerning but he has backed it up with 2 more puzzling calls all by special teams trickery/fails. It needs to be pressed by reporters to get an explanation.

  35. 2
    1

Man imagine if this team was firing on all cylinders. Instead defense plays great and offense shits the bed. Life of a Beav.

  36. In a weird way, is it actually good that Smith is doing all that dumbass shit, thereby crossing him off as a candidate for bigger programs? On net, he’s probably better than any other coach we’re likely to get and is also more likely to stay after having success than others would be.

    • 7
      1

Part 2 is the truth. We can bitch all we want, we are lucky to get Smith even with his warts. No different from Casey. I’ll take it any day, name a better OSU football coach.

      • 1
        1

Haha! I like how you ignored my point. No one is happy with the gambles. But I’d love to hear who we could have got that is better than Smith.

  37. It’s also amazing that CU is just rolling up the score on us.

    Their O is so impressive.

They have so taken advantage of our edge D.

We need to find a solution.

  38. If JS hasn’t lost the locker room after
The recent gambles and DJ is speaking for everyone when he says they love JS and 100%behind him, then it leads one to the conclusion that JS is simply willing to try crazy plays that no one else would consider and the players buy into it as a team. Perhaps it is like a great chess player amusing himself with poor
Moves to see how he can get the advantage again.

    • I think of it more like Smith is taking the lowest risk opportunities to practice something necessary in high pressure situations. In essence, getting reps for when the game will truly be on the line. Where of course it finds itself more often because of the extra risks taken in general.

  39. Newall leads DJ towards the end zone but acts like he is a ball carrier and not a blocker; avoided hitting any buffs on that one. Sheesh!

  40. That was an odd red zone series, at least they kicked the FG, and made it a three-score game, which is what the extra point would have done a few minutes back.

    • It was already a 3 score game at 20-3. Going for it there after getting the penalty actually isn’t that horrific. The execution definitely was though haha.

        • Colorado scoring the 2 points on the return got them the 5. Of course Beavs never expected that would happen. 999 times out of 1000 the Beavs would have just either converted there or not, and it would have still been a 3 score game.

          • That was a classic case of a decent process and the result being the single worst possible outcome and making the HC look brain dead lol. It happens. Outside of the fake FG last week, I feel like JS has okay process, he just might be insanely unlucky. Dan Lanning with similar issues. Must be a state of Oregon thing

          • This is true.

This call is different than not taking points. It was situationally fine, but unlucky.

The fact that many ST plays have been unlucky, situationally appropriate or not, might need some discussion.

          • The point is that there is no difference between an 18 point lead and 19 point lead. You gain virtually nothing by getting the 2. Instead, the unthinkable happens and it’s a two score game. The logic before the play even happened is worse than the actual outcome.

          • Actually there is. If Colorado is down 21-3 and scores a TD to make it 21-10….That means they can tie with a TD, 2pt conversion and a field goal. If it was 22-3 then Colorado needs 3 TDs

          • Uhhhh…. No.

            22-3 = 19 point lead

            2 touchdowns and 2pts = 16
Therefore a field goal makes it 19

So there is no difference between 18 and 19. If it was a difference between 19 and 20 then I understand because then yes, it would be three touchdowns.

          • Addendum….I’m an idiot haha. Few too many beers have impacted my math skills…..Going up 19 would make Colorado need 2 TDs, 2 2pt conversions, and a FG. So I guess it provides a very slight extra advantage, also considering the Beavs only needed a yard on their try……After all consideration I still think is wasn’t the worst call. Just funny how it worked out.

  41. Now Colorado is allowed to hold for the comeback? Obvious holds just about every play. Dline is probably getting gassed.
This needs to be an 8 minute drive to end the game with a score. Put it on the oline.

    I’ll
Be waiting for the refs to call back a nice gain with a holding flag
    On Fuaga again.

  42. I wouldn’t mind seeing if Chiles can catch. He could make a nice extra receiver on occasion woth his speed and height, although I’d hate risk injuring him

  43. Clock just needs to keep running and we need about 3 yards, so naturally we call a dangerous RPO play that could have been picked and also stops the clock.

  44. OSU is “physical” but opts to throw into triple coverage on 3rd and 3.

Listen, I understand if there are six or seven in the box, but this isn’t the NFL. Run the ball and DRAIN THE FUCKING CLOCK

  45. Be interesting to know what DJ thought he saw there, he cannot throw that ball into that coverage. Another questionable Lindgren pass call, 3rd and 3 just run the ball. Even if you don’t get the first down another 40 seconds runs off the clock and maybe you go for it on a 4th and short play and get close to sealing the game. I don’t get it.

    • The University of Phil is the more likely to do it, since it’s down here, but you apparently have not been watching the puppies.

They’re on intravenous fluids, at the moment.

  46. 1
    1

Don’t turn this game off yet. We’ve got an onside kick to recover. If we do recover, I’m sure we’ll throw it 3 times and then punt.

  47. Interesting scenario. Colorado has timeouts so Beavs can’t just run the clock out with running plays. Meaning……they can either just run it and try and get the first down, but at least force Colorado to use the timeouts. Or……They could take the riskier route, attempting to pass for a first down. What will Smith do?

  48. 5
    1

I don’t know that it would ever get called, but it sure looked like Hunter was holding down Olodapo’s arm when the ball was in the air.

  49. We play to the level of our opponents, meaning we will look like dogshit at home against a bottom feeder Stanford, and then look top 10 against the dawgs

    • Need to watch out for a trap game against Stanford. They have at least one really good receiver. UW will have another tough game next week against Utah so they may be a little banged up coming in in 2 weeks. Definitely beatable. The most likely outcome though is an 8 win season without any particularly impressive wins.

      • 3
        3

Based on how we’re playing, that’s not a trap game. That’s a “lucky to get a win” game. This was maybe the ugliest win we’ve had in the JS era. We should’ve steamrolled Colorado yet it game down to a 1 score game. Stanford is likely the last win on the schedule.

  50. That was stupid also, why shotgun snap it, and why run it backward? DJ didn’t even take that much time off the clock. They could have just done victory formation, right? Am I missing something?

          • They certainly were.

UCLA will be USC’s fourth Conference loss, most likely.

They were both (at the time we kicked off) more solid defenses than anyone else we’ll face this year, by far. Their offenses are questionable, as well. But you’ve seen what Utah can do against USC–something UW couldn’t do.

If you want to neg on college football as a whole, that’s fine. There are glaring weaknesses to exploit on every team out there. It’s college football. But the focus on one team’s issues without the context of the whole of college football having all the same issues is pretty meaningless.

  51. 9
    1

Sanders is the worst coach in the conference and is a fraud apart from Sheduer winning games single-handedly.
Nice favor of Deion to make such obvious coaching errors to take some
Of the spotlight off of JS.
A win is a win…7-2 is good and it is tough to
To win on the road. So good job Beavs.

    • I don’t think Prime has a clue what he’s doing from the tactical side of being a head coach. That stupid decision at the end of the first half ended up being one of the differences in the game.

  52. 10
    1

That has to be one of the worst football games I’ve seen in a while.

If it wasn’t for Mascarenas and Chatman (and a couple others) being demons on D, it would have been a really boring game.

I’m happy to see Martinez with 20 carries. But that’s just a start. I’m blaming ball security issues on us just not running the fucking ball, so we’re not used to just running the fucking ball.

  53. Hoping for the best against Washington and Oregon but not feeling good about those games. And Stanford can ball at times so next week is no guarantee.

  54. Beavs D held Buffs to 13pts under their avg, so there’s that…..and 170 yds under their avg.
Also notable, Beavs D on the field only 24 minutes; may have offset the altitude to some degree….in other words, they looked gassed near the end, I’d hate to have seen them need to play another 6 or so minutes.

  55. The home field advantage against Stanford and UW will help. The fact that Lanning is just as stupid and prone to gambling is a factor that will help or may cancel out Smith’s questionable choices. I’m least confident about the Civil War but I do think we can beat UW and Stanford.

  56. 4
    1

With UCLA’s loss, the Beavers, despite two losses and looking overall very poor the last two weeks, now officially control their own destiny to make it to Vegas. They now get Stanford and Washington at home, a stadium they are 15-1 in the last three seasons. Beating Washington is obviously a tall order, but there is something magical about that home field advantage. They should be 10-0 coming in too, Reser will be juiced. College Gameday might even be in town. I don’t think there’s any chance they can win in Eugene, but just giving yourselves a chance for Civil War (maybe the last one for ??? years) with a PAC-12 title bid on the line? Can’t ask for much more than that.

    • Yep. As long as Beavs take care of business next week and stay healthy…..The UW game will be a close one. CW gonna be tough. Will probably be 14-20 pt underdogs. But stranger things have happened…..

    • What’s the tiebreaker if it ends up with UW in 1st place and OSU/Oregon/USC in a 3 way tie for 2nd? (I dont see that happening, but it is possible)
OSU would own the tiebreaker with Oregon.
      How does USC/OSU get determined?

      • It goes to multi team tiebreakers and Oregon State wins it because they have the win over Washington while USC and Oregon lost to them.

      • I don’t think there is a way for a 3 way tie without Utah. Oregon/USC will likely drop usc to 3 conference losses. If USC wins an OSU lose to Ducks then Beavs are at 3 losses.

        • There’s a 3 way tie with Oregon/USC/OSU if USC and OSU win out. It could be a 4 way tie as well if Arizona won out, even still OSU wins the tiebreaker because all 4 of those teams have played Washington and OSU would be the only one that beat them in this scenario.

          • Just kidding, that’s wrong. That would mean USC beat Oregon, so Oregon’s out. It doesn’t matter though. The point is that the UW win is the reason Oregon State would win all these tiebreakers.

        • Forgot Oregon/USC still have a head to head. USC is likely done, but you never know.
Beavs just gotta win out if they want any type of bragging rights.
Coulda/Shoulda/Woulda beaten WSU/Arizina if a few plays go their way. Too bad, this season had so much potential.

Wish we had DJ on last years team. That would have been fun

  57. Just realized Utah is our best friend the next 2 weeks.
If they can beat UW and Arizona in consecutive weeks, Beavs would be in the driver’s seat for 1st place overall.

    • Well, Dickert has been sniffing around for another job and the players are on to him; most of the good ones are most likely searching around for another home. I guess the WSU president sent out a letter basically saying that they were going to have to start cutting the athletic budget, the schedules are a mess, but that they should be happy that they were still a D1 school.

On another topic, how is the kid from CAL doing? I saw that play where he was trying to run it in for a score on the Ducks, fumbled the ball and essentially got blocked pretty hard with his head bouncing off the turf; looked bad in slow motion. The stopped play for quite a while and he was carted off, but no movement other than his eyes. Hate to see shit like that, but it is a violent sport.

  58. Smith, in response to the question about the two point conversion said,
“There’s an analytics chart and then talked about it and where the score …, I feel really confident on it. The 1 1/2-yard line, and double our points. And I think we walk in the end zone if we execute.”
Not the first time failure to execute has been blamed for the results of JS scratch ticket moves.

Back to the mean for Smith. Got the damn points and ran the damn ball, surprise surprise the win and beat an inferior opponent. He couldn’t hold himself back from just getting the xtra point and had to go for two, which ended up being a 3 point swing. They still don’t understand that when you have a running team it shortens the game, and EVERY point matters — games will be lower scoring.
Overall, Beavs are good enough to 5th place and lower but just not a good team — they may beat Stanford, but will end up 8-4

    • 11

8-4 and getting swept by the northwest schools.

Usually going 0-3 against your rivals is enough to warrant a coaching change. Not with Beaver nation apparently.

      • Yeah it certainly would be the worst 8 win season in school history. UW game is massive. A 9 win season including a victory over a top 5 team is lightyears better than an 8 win season and getting swept by the NW.

      • 2
        5

Love how it’s already called that we will be 0-3 vs nw schools. If they win 1 or both I’m sure you will be back with another horrible take. Almost all your replies are total garbage. Go to Eugene, find masolis grave, steal a laptop and use the webcam to record you killing yourself. J/k.

      Meh.
We have one more loss in us… maybe.

Your imagined angst hasn’t watched the crap product that is the rest of college football. You’re just focused on the crap product that is college football in front of you.

      • Oh my angst is very real. But yes! We never know how anything will play out now do we, Okie State beat OU, and KSU almost beat Texas…..I will be at the UW game, really hoping the home crowd pumps up the home team for the win. Away at Authenticator, don’t think the Beavs have a snowball’s chance….

        • 2
          1

Cal was pumping them until their O-line broke down, late in the first quarter.

We don’t go to Autzen and sling the ball around the yard, like we’ve been trying the last couple weeks. That game needs to be shortened and dominated in the trenches.

But the University of Phil is not as dominant a team as their scores would suggest. They simply prey on poor decisions. Crossing my fingers we don’t have any of them, but I won’t say it is impossible.

          • The problem is the Ducks have 3 major variables in their favor this season that they didn’t last year: 1. Home Game, 2. Extra motivation to avenge prior season loss, 3. Chance to make the CFP. There’s just so much more in their psychological arsenal this time around. One thing that could happen however in the Beavers’ favor……With CFP still on the line, and with the knowledge how embarrassing it would be for OSU to take a league championship opportunity from them 2 years in a row (and in the final year of the Pac 12)……It’s possible they come out playing tight. If somehow the Beavs can get a big turnover early or do something to reinforce the doubt……Could be game on.

          • you never know how injuries play out the next 2 weeks too. Last year Nix got dinged up vs UW. It did help OSU to have him less mobile. Hard to say how the USC game will go. You know Lincoln Riley and USC hate oregon, so it could get dirty.

  60. Rewatched game early this morning. OSU is in a catch 22. Our coaching staff is why we are a top 25 team but it is our coaching staff that is keeping us from being a top 10 team.
I think our coaches are very predictable yet reckless at the most random times. For instance. Everyone knows Chiles will come in on 3rd possession. Why? I’m all for playing Chiles and feel he is the better QB in the making. But why not move that time when he goes in around to throw off opponents and to play to the flow of the game? The gambling and coming to a game with a script that you stick to regardless of what’s actually happening in the game is not good HC to me. And for the haters I acknowledge that the Chiles script has been working but it still just shows me that JS has a script and regardless he is sticking to it rather then keeping his finger on the pulse of the game. I’d rather he let DJ play and if DJ is hot let him play, if not then pull him and let Chiles play.
With all that said I am very excited for the future of Chiles. I also wonder if DJ might be able to help our baseball team on the mound before he exits. If he were smart he would look at that because in long term it might be a better fit and path to professional sports payday.
Looking back that Coug loss really stings at this point. So does the gamble at Arizona although AU is a better team and it wasn’t just the gamble there. It was more what I stated above, HC script for a game without in game adjustments.
I watched both Oregon and Washington yesterday. Both are playing like top 10 teams and will be hard to beat. Just hope the Beavs home field advantage helps with Washington.
Go Beavs, I still love you, but please stop breaking my heart.

    • Agree on the Chiles point. It wasn’t so bad earlier in the season to get him some reps. But now we’re getting down to crunch time. Time to stop fucking around. Stanford game is not completely devoid of danger. Let’s play that straight up and not do anything to risk the offensive flow. To do it against UW or UO would just be crazy.

        • The script is important FYI. They are usually around 10-15 plays in order to assess how a defense has prepared for the game. You can glean a lot of info from running some mixed sets and see how the defense reacts. For instance what sets they set up in or shift to zone. It’s basically the road map for the game. Unfortunately Lindgren needs a navigation aid some times.

          • And having two QBs learn from that in serious time, as well as running two scripts, is invaluable.

It has not been a hindrance in any games, and it’s probably the least to think about, given it’s as deflating for the D to not be able to figure Chiles out, then get back to smashmouth… when we bother to smash mouths.

          • I actually don’t mind the coaches mixing it up, Chiles coming in did catch Buffalo flat footed (hoofed?). But the timing is getting very predictable….
Anybody think DJ looked extremely slow on some of his runs….yikes. Would be cool to get Chiles in there on some trick plays on a run option or fake.

          • DJ is slow, and looks even slower because of his size and stride. But he does seem to use his momentum, I don’t remember him falling backwards when hit.

When you rewatch that 2nd half scoring drive by OSU(with the botched 2pt) it sure does seem like the refs didnt want OSU to score there.
They called a hold on Fuaga where the replay didn’t show anything remotely close to a hold.
They called a DJ run dead on forward progress while he was pushing 4 or 5 defenders into the end zone.
The next time DJ ran it in from short, they didnt signal the TD even though DJ was clearly across the line. It was the most deleyed TD signal I think I’ve seen after a play was dead, and thos one wasn’t even questionable. Just a weird series of events that are forgotten because of the botched 2 pt conversion. I know Pac12 refs are terrible, bit thos really feels like deliberate fuckery.

      • I remember that “waiting for the TD” signal happening to the Beavs a couple of times in past years (once against the Quacks I think). Maybe it’s just P-12 officiating incompetence, but I watch a lot of college football and don’t see it much. The announcers were shitty again too. Notice how they made no comment on the replay of the Fuaga hold? And nothing on the Hunter offensive pass interference. The quality of ESPN announcing has gone to shit, I wonder if they’ve “hired cheaper” after all the firings/lay-offs.

For me the issue isn’t Chiles personally. IMO it’s poor tactics to risk messing with the offensive rhythm in a must win game against a high quality opponent. I do think Chiles has shown enough however that if DJ isn’t playing well then it would be fine to pull him. I guess that would be the argument for getting Chiles the early season reps. I just think at this point…..If DJ actually is playing decent…….Don’t mess with it.

Maybe those big wide receivers from WSU will transfer to OSU after Dickert goes to Mich St.
Are there any other WSU players we could bring over and form a PAC2 dominant all star team? Perhaps their dbs and safeties since we have a triage unit covering wide receivers right now?

    • I don’t think Sanders is much of a tactician and it’s becoming more obvious every week. He had much better athletes at the FCS level and still lost both championship games. I guess he’ll get by with strong recruiting for a while and a weaker B12.

  62. 2

Are fans supposed to feel good after this win? To look at the stats and the game flow, the Beavs were in control the entire way. Never trailed or not in any real trouble. It was a solid win but the stink of last week still lingers over this team. Not sure if it ever goes away.

    Random thoughts,
Chiles is earning some NIL dollars next year no matter where he plays,
Finally had a drive where the Beavs just ran the ball. Something they should have had in prior games.
Maybe changing the OC mid year was a mistake but I like Deion is not afraid to make a change when it’s needed. Tibs lasted a year longer than he should have.
Finally DM got above the 20 carries mark. He’s the closer that you want in at the end
Fumbles are becoming an issue, that is something that needs to be fixed
    Tackling still a problem
Anyone think DJU knew the intentional grounding rule? How many people really knew that the passer needs to be under duress for the penalty to apply?
Chatfield is playing up to his recruiting ratings out of high school. Was a top 200 in ESPN rankings.
    Zero 4th down attempts
On the third TD, not sure why the refs called DJU’s forward progress to be stopped on the prior play when he was still moving.
Watch the replay on the two point conversion and look at Bloomfield pull for a block and absolutely blows up Terry. Sent him flying. Friendly fire

    • The forward progress call pisses me off because the refs didn’t blow Caleb Williams down last year when he was stopped on that 4th down.

      • I hate that new Bush Push rule. Like you said it’s an easy way for officials to favor an opponent, they can either blow it dead immediately (like a they should be) or they wait around til the entire team wanders in and starts pushing for extra yardage. It’s fucking annoying.

        • They should have at least waited for someone to wrap him up. He had just bounced off a defender and was just starting to push back, when the whistle blew.

      • Or they wait long enough for a strip fumble to take place, or it becomes a flag for unsportsmanlike on the oline driving in after the rest because no whistle yet.
I’ve also seen where the whistles don’t blow until the running back is tossed backwards about 15 yards. Depending on who is playing it is an unsportsmanlike or no call. So easily subjective reffing to influence the game flow.

  63. No matter the emphasis about playing the game and not having control over decisions in which they have no part, the players are in tough spots. They do have to worry about where they might go and/or do next. They committed in good faith to OSU. They know it isn’t the school’s fault but that doesn’t help with looming choices they have to make.

    • Right? All you have to do is look up Omar and Jam. Left a good situation for a bag. Now you’re asking kids to stay in a precarious situation and turn down a bag

I’m thinking best case scenario is we finish 3rd in the conference, with one of either Oregon or UW going to the playoffs, the other team getting a NY6, and us getting bumped up a bowl tier due to the CFP spot, which would likely put us in either the Alamo or Holiday Bowl. Would prefer Holiday Bowl at Petco Park even though Alamo is technically the “better bowl”.

By running it right at them.

They’re not a team focused on strength, and their depth hasn’t really been tested, yet.

Run them into the dirt, then run over them.

Not sure why this is a hard concept to grasp.

          • Obviously, but I’m not really trusting of Smith to stick to that plan. And, I really don’t think our defense will be able to keep up with their offense on the road.

          • How many years have we seen the weather get cold right around the Civil War game and the duck players wilt? So many things can happen between then and now.
If they matched up tomorrow, I’d say oregon wins by a decent margin. But there are still 2 other games to get through for both teams.

It means respect. Last year when we were 6-2 we were ranked #24. This year when we were 6-2 we were ranked #16.

Also we’ve been in 16 straight AP Poll rankings which I don’t think has ever happened.

        • No, Beavs might have the worst case of the two loss teams right now. WSU loss is looking really bad now. Most of the 2 loss teams lost to other current top 25 teams.

          • 2
            1

Yes it does. However, I think the Cougs played a great game against us. Great throws and catches all over the field. Not sure what has happened to them. I bet if we played them now we beat them 20.

      • Strange how public perception changes things. Usually our computer rankings from Sagarin, Massey, Colley are better than our poll rankings but it is the opposite this year. We are currently #17 in Billingsley, #19 in Sagarin, Massey and ESPN FPI, and #26 in Colley Matrix.

I think more of the voters are watching Beav games because of the DJU storyline, and many of them see a team that has won really ugly at times but is 6 points and some coaching miscues on the road away from being 9-0.

It doesn’t really matter at this point, easy to see that this team could either finish 7-5 with three ugly losses down the stretch and limp to a LA Bowl in what would go down as a disjointed and down year as compared to last years team, or they could get their shit together and win all three in boring 24-17 kinda fashion off the running game and aggressive Defense and end up 11-2 in the P12 title game and the story of the season is a continued ascension in spite of the realignment drama.

Please, just stop with the incompetent “ultra-aggressive” and “analytics” driven decisions. Someone stage an intervention, bring in Dr. Phil and have a special episode on the P12 Network or something.

    A couple questions:
Grinch has been fired at SC, will this have any impact on the game in Eugene next Saturday?

And, this from Wilner, “Congrats to Washington for scoring 3 more points on USC’s defense than Cal did”, make ya think better of Beavs chances vs Dawgs?

I know this would stunt Chiles growth and may lead him to transfer but I think DJU needs another year in this offense. Hard to believe that he would be drafted before the 5th round.

      • I think possibly for both. Usually qb’s thrive in their second year of running the same offense. Agree that the job should go to the best player who can successfully run the offense. My comment was made based on that I thought DJ was hopeful to play one year and the enter the draft. I don’t think he will go that high based on his performance to date.

  67. 5
    5

It is not OSU’s responsibility to prepare DJ for the nfl draft. It is only OSU’s responsibility to prepare him to run the Beaver offense. Any mention of DJ’s plans indicated he wanted only a year, but that is irrelevant. Chiles will be out the door in a flash (assuming he wouldn’t be anyway) if he thought he had to wait another year.

  68. 7
    4

DJ will go into the draft after this year because he has shown his ability to understand defenses and operate in a pro style even if it is only for 11-12 games. MFL will see his arm talent and say he can be the next Culpepper or something like that and they will move him up the draft board.
If the Beavs can actually win out and get into a NY6 bowl on merit and not leaving it to the rankings, which means winning the next 5 games, we will all be wishing him well as he moves onto the NFL.

Chiles is electrifying when he is in and I sort of wonder is Chiles is JS’s ultimate gambling move for the Civil War. Give the Ducks just enough to prepare for both, expecting DJ to start but Chiles comes out with swag experience and leads the Beavs to another Covil War win at Autzen… Zone read, RPO, Pro style drop back, play action stretch run, design qb keepers, all the frustrating calls that Chip used with Marriota can be finally repaid on the Ducks with Chiles. Or so it seems
I’m the dream stages of the gambler!

    • DJU isn’t listed on most draft boards. Probably seen as an average QB but with a big arm. Needs to show up in the next few games if he wants to be drafted high if at all.

      • 2
        1

Just like knew JS would never onside kick in the first half on the road of a game he just went up 2 scores? Or we would never see a fake fg attempt by our kicker from 20 yards out and 3 seconds left in the half? Or like we’d never see a 2pt conversion imploded and returned for 2 pts by the opponent when the game was well in hand? Or any other mystifying play calls which are simply unaccountable in JS repertoire? In light of these decisions, I wouldn’t say it will never happen…

  69. 2

It is good to have Utah still in the running which means Penix will get a lot of pressure and many hits by Utahs frontline this week.
As for USC, do they have any pride left and will their defense actually give max effort to stop the Ducks? I tend to think Bear may get a few cheap shots on Nix before he gets tossed.

Stanford is streaky but Beavs at home will be the best medicine for OSU to get settled and ready for the stretch run. Beavs 40-17

    • Hopefully USC’s defense responds similar to how OSU’s did when Tibbs was fired. They’ve got the athletes to cause some damage, just not the scheme or effort.

      • Their S&C coach is the next target, from what I’m hearing.

He apparently knows how to create muscle mass without increasing strength.

  70. 2
    1

Win the next three, and we may get a NY6 spot regardless of whether or not the team wins the conference title. If we win out in the regular season, we likely rematch UW in the title game, and if they win they may still get a CFP spot as a one loss conference champ, if we win well we obviously get the NY6 spot anyways.
