Home Football Signing Day(early) – Class of 2024

Signing Day(early) – Class of 2024

754

Starting a new thread for the first signing day under coach Bray.

Last I counter there were about 9-10 2024 commits who should be signing.

(Freauff, Foster, Ayers, Hawkes, Haberland, Durant, Hatcher, Gutridge, Sikorski?, Allah,

I’m assuming the kicker, Connington, will flip to MSU.

Hopefully some new names will be announced, like Anderson and/or a transfer QB.

For the first time in awhile, signing day is a bit of a mystery which could be a good thing or a bad thing.

Feel free to compile any news of the day in this thread. I’d imgine things will get rolling around 5:00AM(I’ll be sleeping)

  1. I figured sappington was going to msu. That would suck to lose our kicker and our high school guy. I really hope they land Anderson and we get another surprise or two that we’re holding back til signing day to announce. No inside info just wishful thinking.

  2. It seems AT LEAST this class is better than Gary Andersen’s first effort where we ended up with kids he’d normally get at Utah State.

    • I think the HS recruits have high upside. It will be interesting to see how they develop over the next few years. In the coaches to have them reach their potential.

  3. I think that Jordan Anderson kid must be on twitter’s shit list. Only explanation for all the deleted tweets. I’ve seen a few get through briefly, but then they always get deleted. But it’s nothing controversial.
He does have a message on his profile that says “old twitter hacked”, so my guess is he did something to get banned, then tried creating a new account but twitter is limiting him

  4. It appears we’ve hit a lull

This DE Kinilau Fonohema is supposed to announce where he’s going today, between OSU/BYU/Utah
Since he’s from the state of Utah, I don’t really like our chances, but we’ll see.

    https://twitter.com/KinilauFonohema

Haven’t heard anything from Freauff, Durant, Hatcher, Allah, Connington
Not really concerned with Freauff, Hatcher or Allah, who all seem locked in.
Durant seems to be solid too, though I don’t know for sure.
Connington I expect to decommit, though that’s not 100% either.

    Anybody I’m missing?

  5. What WRs do the Beavers have for 2024 to help entice a QB to commit?

Card? Valsin? Noah? Hatten? Wells Jr? Did Reddicks leave?

There won’t be a lot of experience to sell, plus likely a new offensive system (hopefully just evolved, not completely replaced).

Hunter Haines goes to WSU. Was a silent commitment to Oregon but decommitted and went WSU. We didn’t offer him at all from what I can see yet he was one of, if not the best defensive player in Oregon. Curious why we didn’t offer? Sounds like ability to play sooner than what he would at UO was part of the decision. Considering we have a lot of opportunity in the secondary it’s a bit weird we didn’t at least offer. Seems like our ST coach who was also a HS safety in Oregon would’ve been all over that? Also, isn’t his brother on the team?

“We’ve hit a lull…” meanwhile Nike keeps opening the checkbook to buy more 5* and 4* star athletes to try and buy Uncle Phil a championship before he passes from this earth.

Countdown to “No Natty Day” is a yearly thing and this year will be no different..imagine if the ducks were in a similar situation as the Beavs currently. How would they go about dealing with the present circumstances if there was no Nike $$$ to toss at any player to make a headline? I expect the Ducks to have another star studded roster of underachievers who melt once adversity hits them.

    • He got his bag though. And if he plays well he can go get another bag after that coach gets fired. Not a good system but a good strategy for the kid.
He was fun to watch and certainly has some moxie.

  8. Following up on my Hunter Haines comment and curiosity of why Beavs didn’t offer, Nemec (threw up in my mouth typing that) posted that OSU was at 1 time his dream offer and that they never did. Best defensive player in state and a top return guy with 4.4 speed. How the hell can Cookus not offer this guy?!! Played the same position and could be a huge asset on ST at the very least. Love it when former studs come back to coach but dam it hurts when they turn Traitor on you (JS) or seem completely out of their element. There were a few bright spots for Cookus but outside a good return game (thanks Bolden and Gould!) ST was always a weak spot for the most part.

    • Hard to believe anyone when they invoke “my dream school” these days. Not a knock on that kid but in general, candidness, loyalty and honor are declining concepts that in our society seemingly.

    • Why do we keep finding out coaches neglect our own state, every time they leave?

That’s one of the ways the hoops team degraded. HS coaches start to not trust you, because you passed on other kids who had all the tools, but we wanted turnkey prototypes instead.

You don’t find the JJ Watts of the world by recruiting them by star ratings or who has offered them. You study their games, their vision, their motors. And then you build the car on that chassis. And then every year you refill the cupboard.

I’m dying to know the S&C hire.

I’m not worried, because we seem to have an excellent history of choosing excellent coaches at that position. I’m just intrigued at what direction we take in the hire. There are so many more than competent candidates out there.

  9. So the signing day news is over and no Durant signing? ANy others delayed or uncommitted that were on the list?

Are the replacement finds on par or are we losing quality overall form the original class JS had been working on?

Does Bray get a high grade for holding everything together to this point?

Beavs to WCC for basketball the next two years. This is actually more manageable than MWC, which would have just been embarrassing for MBB.

    • 1
      1

      *basketball and every other sport

If the argument was about minimizing travel and emphasizing student wellbeing, this is a better solution than MWC would have been

      • Doesn’t appear to be a consensus on baseball. Some saying independent some saying WCC for everything not football. Feels bad for our good sports programs like gymnastics, wbb, etc but men’s basketball has to be doing backflips knowing they have a chance to win a couple of conf games. Baseball would be better served going indy if they can manage…has to be a better strength of schedule by doing that. I’m sure it’s a scheduling nightmare.

      • I’d prefer the WCC over the MWC for most Olympic sports, so I like it. A quick glance tells me that the WCC conference doesn’t support Wrestling, Men’s Rowing, Gymnastics or Track and Field. Will likely need some sort of an independent schedule for those as well.

Does anybody know if WSU is following suit in heading to the WCC for Olympic sports?

    • 6
      1

MWC (because they have a good commissioner) wants a lot of $ and guarantees for all schools to be involved in an eventual merger with Pac2. Don’t want to get used by OSU/WSU to prop them up for two years and then gutted and left for dead like the t10 did us, so I understand their strategy.

WCC probably saves OSU/WSU a ton of money for Olympic sports over 2 years that don’t generate much revenue even when compared to MWC and their media rights deal (which sucks).

Don’t think Murthy/Barnes and Schulz/Chun are plotting a course in a vacuum either. They’re trying to find the best (and most economical) path to 2026 while the legal proceedings play out and the drama unfolds with what might be happening with B12/ACC/PAC merger.

  11. Actually, being Big 12 in the big sports and WCC in everything else makes a ton of sense as a long-term plan, too.

Seems like this would negatively impact recruiting (though MwC would have, too).

  12. Where’s blitzes flip? Was it just a flip to see where they were going for lunch? Or complete bullshit like everything else they post?

  13. So I’m maybe overly sensitive given the defections and uncertainty but I found the wording of Skyler Thomas’ response to DAM Nation NIL post on X a little odd. Perhaps it’s nothing but it’s worded in past-tense. Might be nothing since I don’t know what he gains by delaying a xfer portal announcement given he’s injured and can’t play in the bowl but why the past-tense?! Lol

“@DamNationNIL Thank you for everything you guys have done, you guys always did the right way, it has been a pleasure working with you. GO BEAVS!!”

  14. Well, Durant hasn’t signed yet but MSU has already done the class of ’24 graphic so it doesn’t seem likely he’s getting pulled over there. Wonder if there’s still last minute pushes being made?

    • There are late announcements in our classes every year and Durant’s 7v7 coach is our new RB coach’s brother. Probably no need to panic.

  15. @MHver3 posted an update:

Had to delete it. Don’t want to cause any issues with the talks.

Two entities that will remain nameless are looking into funding a B12/ACC/PAC merger. Could help close the gap with SEC/B10. That’s all you’re getting from me on it for now.

      • 1
        3

Yea, the rumor was TKO and an “unnamed entity” that many were speculating could be the Saudi PIF (LIV Golf). Pretty sketch if true I have a hard time seeing that many university presidents signing off on getting into bed with the Saudi regime for sports and money. They’d have to deal with lots of on-campus activism at the least.

Turns out the PIF is trying to get into college football though, Athletic article from back in June laid out how they were trying to take advantage of the realignment turmoil to buy their way in:

        https://theathletic.com/4647551/2023/06/29/college-football-saudi-arabia-pif/

  16. Asst. S&C Marco Candido promoted to head role.

Bray so he’s pretty certain Cookus will be retained, but likely in a different role.

  17. Notes from Bray interview:

-QB, TE and DB remain portal priorities
-Staff learned from their first year at OSU not to fill a class just to fill it (remember the weird last minute in-state offers that year?)
-Seemed to highlight Allah as a guy who was under the radar due to some teams being portal-happy and someone they were happy to get. McShane had been targeting him when he was at Northwestern.
-Talked about our guys continuing to be under threat of being poached (which is hilarious because it’s supposed to be against the rules)

  18. So signing day ended with a whimper…
Has there been any updates on Freauff and/or Durant?

And all Jordan Anderson can do is post Joker cards. Good times.

Bray better be hitting the portal hard to supplement. And with the 2nd signing day will need some more bodies added to the 2024 class

  19. 5
    1

    @MHver3:

My source telling me todays news of ORSU/WSU joining WCC for 2 years does not affect any of the current merger talks

    1. Main non-equity-funded merger talks were with ACC with Pac2 as a possibility.

    2. Equity funded merger of 3 conferences isn’t an overnight deal and finalization of actual PAC assets will take months.

    3. Pac2 have a very easy exit path from the 2 year deal with WCC in the event of being invited to a P5 or other circumstances like an equity funded merger

    4. Beavs and Cougs: don’t let the news get you down. It’s literally just a stop gap solution to keep your Olympics viable and reduce travel expenditures.

    • #3 is something MWC would never give OSU/WSU (and in their best interest shouldn’t without a very hefty price tag) for any kind of multi-year agreement, even just for Olympic sports.

    • 4 is duh… plus getting constant exposure in California.

In fact, I could have made this list. We already know we’ll be attacking from the badlands for a year or two.

  20. 11
    2

Barnes should not be announcing anything about joining any conference for any sport. The last thing OSU needs to do is get its own PAC 12 board seat revoked.

  21. 1
    1

Gotta hit up portal and grab a qb. If I’m Dutant I’m concerned about that too. Behind BG you have at least 1 walk-on maybe 2…not sure about Throckmorton. I’m also thinking the late offer to the local kid is more for damage control and coming up with 0 QB’s this year than him being a true target for the class. Hope he does develop and thrive but you have to be concerned if you’re Durant.

Hopefully the portal smiles upon us as this was definitely a thin class and we need some help.

  22. I guess the early signing period is 3 days long so we could see some new recruits trickle in before it’s over. Looking at you Jordan Anderson!

    • It doesn’t make a lot of sense. It’s not like the portal is adding players to the system. It just moves current players around. Sure, the upper tier teams are getting more transfers than HS recruits, but the net number of players going through the whole system is not affected by the portal. I would say the covid year caused a logjam and is more to blame than the portal.

      • 2
        1

The whole system is affected currently. Because teams were not made like this. And it’s a new thing, like first time universities deal with this and football teams specifically.

College football is absolute chaos currently. People think 12 playoff will fix it…. Not a chance, soon coaches will leave after spring camp, players that sign 3 months before will leave before they get 1 fall camp in(all kids somehow graduate hs early now). It’s a mess

  23. 1
    3

Saw a post that said Archie Manning made $3.1 mill in NIL money as the backup at TX. Lol. Holy shit. So yeah, it seems very plausible that Yucks would likely be forking out that much to get the 2 qb’s they got. Perhaps that # is higher based on his name but definitely backs up what Coach Rhule was saying.

  24. Colorado got a commitment from a 5 star OT who went live on FS1 with his commitment and said how players need to come play for Deion and 2 weeks later he didn’t sign with Colorado and is driving up the price for him lol. What a circus

    • Clown show. Colorado is going to absolutely TANK once Deion leaves next year because his team can’t win more than five games. He’s burned his program’s bridges with most schools in the area.

  25. 9

I appreciate these kid’s talent and athleticism but they are not pros. So why are they getting paid like pros? Man you got to wonder if college football has already driven by all the warning signs and the cliff isn’t to far off.

    • 13
      1

The moment the NCAA ok’d the NIL deal without caps or oversight was the moment it plunged over the cliff. And I don’t see a way to reel it back in. I feel sorry for coaches having to deal with the egos and drama associated with it.

  26. WBB up 21-8 at end of 1st qtr.
    Sound is first class tonight.
Callan, noting a player named Maupin on the TT team mentions that Oregon has a city named Maupin……says it’s near Dufur. Know ’em both, struck me as funny that he’d mention Dufur and not the Deschutes River or ??

    • Is this team going to be top 20 by season’s end?

They’re 10-0, haven’t gotten any votes yet. TVH and Beers seem to be pretty consistent.

I realize they haven’t reached the PAC league schedule yet, which is loaded with top 25 teams. But have to be developing confidence and hopefully a good sense of “team” (an odd thing these days in NCAA sports). Hopefully Gill is a homecourt advantage.

Man, Fentress went off on Duck fans. It’s pretty funny being such a Duck homer. In general he was protecting the job Helfrich did at Oregon and blasting people for propping some of these recent coaches up as being better coaches but yet them acting like the xfer portal and the mass amounts of checks people are writing to get these players and they still essentially have nothing to show for it. Lol. Literally the argument most everyone makes against Oregon but coming from one of their own is pretty funny.

    https://twitter.com/AaronJFentress/status/1737666580027449665?t=tucxm4RQbkJKvO_Fngudxw&s=19

    • 6
      1

First time I’ve seen a duck fan admit that most of their recruits are going to just end up in the transfer portal. I count 23 former 4-star recruits who have transferred out of their program last year and so far this year.

      • Need a new term for “commits.”

        Transient Athlete? “TA?” “Transient?”

Some of them sure aren’t “student athletes.”

“Rentals?” that might be appropriate. I think I like “Rental.”

      • This is the new model for elite programs. College football isn’t going back to what is was before and the programs that are adapting are enjoying the most success.

Coaches will talk about wanting guys that are committed and stay around because of course that means they have to do less recruiting work, but that’s just not a reality for programs that want to compete at the highest levels.

If Idaho can be decimated after a run to the FCS Qurterfinals, no one is safe.

        • I don’t understand why any top 10 (or so) NIL school would bother with more than a handful of high school recruits. Let the lower teams develop the talent then but it away when they are a proven quantity.

          • That’s exactly the model going forward.

Basically teams like Oregon State will be developmental programs for the big money teams. They’ll probably actually start to recruit “better” because there will be more highly rated kids not being pursued by the big money teams. But once they’re in the program and start to show promise here comes the bag.

  28. ND has announced there 20 player to opt out of the sun bowl. I think it’s 15 or 16 that saw significant playing time this season. Ouch.

  29. 3
    2

I don’t know if I should hate the WCC arrangement more than I should. Good hoops conference, good in non-revenue sports – just not great – and it will save on travel costs. One thing is for sure, I’m done givng school officials the benefit of the doubt until they earn it back after the Pac-12 fiasco. It’s pretty clear the Big 12 Four and the Big 10 Four had “back-up plans” going into the summer if they didn’t like the media deal Kliakov presented. The other four had no clue.

    • 13
      2

So acting in accordance with the bylaws they signed means they have no clue?

      That’s pretty laughable.

And the numbers don’t jibe for UW or the Phighting Phils, in terms of “liking” anything.

What does make sense is that they had been planning to destroy the Conference, all along, acting expressly against the bylaws they signed, and harming the economies of their own respective states to the tune of untold tens of millions, if not more.

  30. People reporting that FSU will file paperwork to leave ACC tomorrow. Apparently there’s an emergency board meeting. ACC implosion was just put on warp speed with FSU being left out of final 4.

    • Someone is going to have to explain to me how this fixes FSU’s problem. The CFP committee clearly stated that the injury to their starting QB is what caused them to be left out of the CFP. How does being in a different conference change that outcome?

Obviously next year there will be a 12-team playoff, so they’re basically guaranteed to get in if they go 13-0 in the ACC, even if they lost QB1 and QB2.

If money is the real issue then just say that. Not getting invited to the CFP is just a cover.

  31. 3
    2

Sounds like Florida State may really be hatching a plan to leave the ACC. Scheduled a board meeting tomorrow. I think that’s great for us because instability in the ACC would lead to UNC or Clemson also leaving which could mean Cal and Stanford come back to the PAC.

    • I don’t understand why FSU is leaving. I keep hearing it is because they didn’t get into the 4 team playoff but going forward it is an 12 team playoff and they would have been in it.

  32. 1
    1

Reading previous posts there are theories that pac 12 members had back-up plans or that the teams themselves wanted to ruin the conference. Florida now using not being one of the four or money is driving them to leave ACC. Although I agree with one of the post above that 4 schools in the PAC were clueless, OSU being one of them, I have a different conspiracy theory. I thing all of this is being navigated by the media companies who have been strategically getting in schools ears driving results they desire. Schools are ponds in the big media game slash power struggle being fought right now.

    • i don’t see what the downside of being independent for 2 years would be.
Hardest part would be finding a bunch of teams that need to fill non-conference series, but given the place OSU sits nationally, who wouldn’t want to play us? Would be good for any teams’ RPI (except of course the losing to OSU part)

      • Depends on how other conferences are scheduling their games. How many conference games do the SEC, ACC and BIG10 go to with that many teams? Can’t imagine they’d want to beat up on each other the whole year. ACC, SEC, and PAC12 played thirty conference games. ACC and SEC now have more teams. Could leave room for Beavs to pick up series here and there but not 30 games worth.

          • This would be the hard part. Weekend series are likely scheduled so it’d be a lot of mid-week type stuff? Seems hard to do for baseball and the amount games played. I think there’s a reason football tends to be the only independent sport…scheduling those 12 games is tough enough.

          • 1
            1

That’s just it, we always played 1 or 2 non con weekend series sprinkled into conference plau.
Nevada and West Carolina last year.
            Long Beach in 2022
            UC Irvine in 2021

It’s pretty common to have mid season non-con weeken matchups in baseball.

We could put together a much stronger schedule than a WCC or even Big12 schedule and really sell those high profile games to recruits.

          • 1
            1

I looked up the 2024 Pac12 Non-Con weekend series that happen after conference play starts next year.
I was thinking the Pac may be a little unique in that they have to have these non-con series all year since Colorado doesn’t have a baseball program and the number of baseball programs is uneven, but I saw similar scheduling going on in the Big10(13 teams) and Big12(9 teams).

So i guess from that standpoint, joining the Big12 would be the easy route, since we’d be that team that helps them even up their conference, but then WSU would have to go be part of the Big10 to balance them out.

March 8th-10th – Oregon State vs Cal State Northridge
            March 15th – 17th – UW vs Texas
March 23rd to 25th – Stanford vs Creighton
            March 29th – 31st – Oregon vs Seattle
April 5th – 7th – Utah vs Cal State Northridge
            April 12th – 14th – Arizona vs La Tech
            April 19th – 21st – USC vs Sac State
            April 26th – 28th – WSU vs Fresno State
May 3rd – 5th – UCLA vs Cal State Fullerton
            May 10th – 12th – Cal vs SJSU

          • But if OSU is a top 10 program, why would any of them help us and want to slide us into their schedule rather than a possible sweep of another club?

This is the danger of going independent in reality. If you are bad-you get body bag type schedules, if you are good-no one schedules you and if you are Notre Dame, everyone wants to get the exposure of playing against you. Beyond ND, independent sports will be disastrous.

          • I think on balance most decent baseball programs would lean towards the RPI side..

I think OSU could make a schedule. Sounds like WSU goes with OSU though and think they’d have more potential issue.

  33. Also, Greg Biggins saying Jordan Anderson deciding between Beavs or SDSU. Seemed like the 2 most likely but didn’t think it had truly been narrowed down to the 2 of us. Might wait until Friday for commitment.

  34. 1
    2

I looked at the WCC for baseball. Historically they’ve gotten 1-2 bids per year with 2 bids only a few times.

That’s the math. In both routes, the early season non conf would be the same as prior years. Should be able to get quality opponents every weekend and enough weekday opponents.

If they join the WCC, they’d have to finish 1 or 2 to get a tourney bid. WCC finished as the #12 conference in RPI last year. Would go higher with the Beavs but not close enough to warrant multiple bids. Easier route but little room for error.

Go independent, try to scrape together a schedule that’s gets the RPI up near the top. It’s been done before, Dallas Baptist was independent for while.
It would be much more difficult to get to a hosting bid this way. Tougher route but higher reward.

  35. 1
    2

Well, I had posted earlier who you thought the portal QB would be and why it would be McCoy…and it’s McCoy. Lol. Glad we swung for the fences and I wonder what happened to the Mizzou xfer? There was like 0 momentum on that outside the 24/7 guy. This feels like year 2 or 3 of the rebuild where we could actually talk to good recruits but ultimately land the G5 guys.

  36. The only reason to take three QBs is if BG or Throckmorton has said they are done after the bowl game or next fall. Want four or five scholarship QBs each year. But if they have indicated they are staying, then QB recruiting is done this year.

And if anyone suggests Montiel, they have not been to a game and watched him throw in pregame.

    • When BG was asked about his future after the bowl game he went right into coach speak about “being focused on this great opportunity with this team” and sure felt like he knows he’s gone.

    • Stack up the position of need and see what comes out. I don’t know if they’re done. Probably see Murphy as a one and done with today’s portal. Right now nothing has been shown to suggest Ben comes back. The fact that the coaches and media have pretty much moved past throckmorton makes me uncomfortable with relying on him. If Ben stays I could see and battle between him and McCoy but if not they need another transfer.

  37. 7
    2

Oh this is big!! I think a settlement in Pac is achieved.

Departing schools have agreed to forfeit portion of distributions over remainder of this year and provide specific guarantees against potential future liabilities. Conf retains it’s assets and all future revenue.

    • Okay how big of a slice did we get? $100 mil? 200? 300?

Good deal about assets and future revenues.

I assume this means the PAC 12 Network kept all the rights to everybody’s game tapes?

    • I had no problem with the Traitorous 10 getting their bowl shares and NCAA tourney money they helped generate – but other than that – Nothing. Funny how OSU and WSU at least for now, are looking at a better financial outlook than any of the 10 in the short term outside of USC and UCLA, given the diminished media rights deal they had agree to.
And I know these universities are probably not accountable to anyone really – but how some of these schools’ trustees haven’t resigned in disgrace is beyond me. You fail to protect the school by protecting the conference, do a shotgun marriage with another conference with diminished revenue (if any revenue at all) and then have to eat the Pac-12 moneies you would have been entitled to by leaving. An absolute embarassament of incompetence and neglect.

  38. 3
    1

Settlement puts OSU/WSU in a good position to get involved with a potential B12/ACC/PAC merger if that comes to fruition as the dominos fall around FSU.

    Updates from @MHver3:

“Trying to answer a lot of ACC contract questions I’ve been getting with this thread: ESPN contract can get reopened by the network if the ACC falls below 14 schools. Hence the additions of Calford Express.”

“The problem is if more than 3 teams leave the ACC has to backfill again and they have to be P5 schools (SMU was brought in to pre-backfill so they are now considered P5). Theres only 2 P5 schools left that would be available ORST/WSU”

“ESPN only had prorata increases for 3 schools in the ACC deal (1 was supposed to be for ND if they joined-it’s gone now). So more backfilling isn’t an option at this point.”

“If the ACC loses 4 schools (assume NC/FSU/UVA/Clemson) then espn can open the contract and renegotiate for the updated worth. This is the death blow that will cause additional ACC schools to leave to B12.”

“ESPN can control who B12 takes and choose who they want to pay for and trim the dead weight (in their eyes). So BC, Wake should be most concerned.”

“This is why Phillips has been very involved with BY regarding merger/alliance options. ACC could very well be 2023 PAC 12 2.0”

“ACC dominoes will fall slower than Pac12 did. The grant of rights and tv contract length/stipulations will gum things up a little longer. This will take at least 2 years to play out fully. Maybe longer.”

“My source has just told me that in a year or two Grant of Rights will be as worthless as the ink they were signed with. FSU has their loophole.”

The terms of this settlement sure make it sound like discovery was pretty damning and the 10 didn’t want that bad publicity.
There no way they agree to take 2023 revenue cuts as well as agree to take on future liabilities unless they knew this was going to get ugly for them.
The talk of future potential anti-trust litigation doesn’t seem all that far fetched now.

    • 3
      2

I like that this gives us firm definition on our future assets and allows us to have substantial discussions with the Big12/ACC. That’s a big deal given how much the landscape is changing right now.

    • I read it differently. The revenue that is given up will be used for settlements in the cases against the PAC12/NCAA and not separate items. Could be wrong but we’ll see when the details come out.

      • 5
        2

“The departing schools have agreed to forfeit a portion of distributions over the remainder of the 2023-2024 year and provide specific guarantees against potential future liabilities. ”

I’m going with the “AND” meaning in addition to forfeiting a portion of 2023/2024 revenue, they’re also conceding they will be liable for certain future conference liabilities (like pending lawsuits)

If McCoy is the only portal QB we get, we truly are a MWC level team. It’s interesting to me that he tagged his agent in his commitment tweet…there was clearly some NIL discussion involved.

Based on the skill set of the QB’s we’re targeting, I have a hunch someone on the current depth chart is going to be gone and we’ll need to take another. We’ll see.

    • Tale of the tape from PFF below. I’ve seen enough film and I think others have seen similar things that tend to align with my view that he’s a smart QB and decent runner, but his arm talent is mediocre. From watching his games (against high quality FCS competition) I don’t see the QB the stats below portray.

      -#4 rated passer in FCS
-#6 rated passer on deep routes with 20 “big time throws” and 0 turnover worthy plays. This is actually a really impressive ratio. Kind of an obscure stat, but this ratio tends to correlate really strongly with who the big time draft prospects are.
-Adjusted accuracy on deep routes was 45% (compare to DJU at 47%)

-Faced the third most pressures in FCS (bad Idaho OL) and had the third most scrambles
-64.7% accuracy under pressure (compare to DJU at 52%)…McCoy’s number would have been middle of the pack in the P12

      • He did play two games against FBS teams: Nevada and Cal.

Nevada was his best game of the season statistically (despite being pressured on half his drop backs!) Against Cal, he put up a very mediocre 67 PFF rating and his second worst game of the season (similar to his rating against Albany, the top FCS defense he faced all season). Again, he was pressured on almost half his dropbacks against Cal, too. Hopefully he’ll benefit from better protection at OSU!

The first half he came out and lit up a Wilcox defense on the road for 17 points in the first few possessions, then Idaho didn’t score the rest of the game. Watching more of his highlights, he’s a little bit like a mobile Kellen Moore-type. Doesn’t have great size or arm strength, but his decision making is really good and his accuracy looks really impressive (at least on the highlights).

  41. Looking over last season’s stats for McCoy he seems to be accurate but throws more picks than you like. I think some of that might be out of desperation and trying to make something happen but I don’t know. Not a big runner but has the mobility to hurt you or to evade the rush and move the chains. Solid pickup but would like to see another qb transfer.

    • For reference, Idaho was one of the worst pass blocking teams in all of FCS, but still managed to have a top 10 passing attack. You can do the math on who gets the credit for that.

Also impressive is if you look at turnover worthy plays per pressure, he was the third best QB in FCS, meaning he didn’t do stupid things under pressure. He only made a turnover worthy play on 5% of pressures (which is better than the same stat for all three Heisman finalists). He’s also not just playing it safe across the board, though, as he was a top 15 QB in FCS in “big time throws.”

      • Johnson is the only one that left that makes sense. McCoy wouldn’t leave a starting role to come somewhere he thought he was going to be a backup. Johnson still needs another year or two before he’s a starter.

          • A) there’s probably a reason he left Missouri. If they thought he was ready to start or compete for QB1, they would have told him that.

            B) it’s still not common for redshirt freshmen to start

            C) This is what I’m telling myself because I’m hoping we still have a chance at landing him

    • 4
      3

Who? That unprofessional Duck homer Geoff Schwartz? He actually uses “we” when he talks about the Quacks on his show. He sounded like he was on the verge of tears when they lost the championship game.

  42. Current QB room looks like this, yes?

    Gulbranson R-So
    Throckmorton R-Fr
    Montiel R-Fr
    McCoy R-So
    Gutridge HS

I mean, clearly it seems like this would be a battle between Gulbranson and McCoy – I feel like we would be fine with either against next year’s schedule. Not sure we are as desperate for another transfer QB as some think. Wouldn’t be the worst thing if we ride or die with BG/McCoy for this season, and then give Gundy a full year of recruiting to find additional talent next offseason…

    • 4
      4

Not a good QB room to have. Need a QB that offers serious upside next year. Hopefully the staff is still pursuing another QB

GB is who is he is. Any upside is unlikely.
Throckmorton is an unknown but has never been reported to challenge for the starting or backup spot.
Montiel is a walk on for a reason
McCoy is a good FCS QB. I don’t think it will translate to FBS success.
Gutridge is a long term project with unknown ceiling.

      • Maybe Guttridge is the freshman we all have dreaded over the years. Lot of moxie, no fear, elusive and accurate, mature beyond his years and a winner who is a local kid and develops into a top 10 qb over the next 2-3 years. Kellen Moore/Matt Moore mixture…

        • Possible. From far away, it looks like he didn’t get much looks as basketball seemed a more likely college option. Will need a redshirt year where he gets his weight up to 205 -210 and then go from there

          • Do trust the assessments you mention here; it’s been fun to peek how current starters were “graded” originally when they first came out of high school or even JUCO — some were in the low “80s,” “high two star to low three star,” or barely cracking “5.0” (out of 6) — I wouldn’t place them in that range now.

  43. Florida State just live streamed their board meeting. They are going to sue the ACC, claiming the $500 mil exit fee is not legal

  44. 6
    10

Probably an unpopular opinion but the moment the news of Smith leaving broke, a large amount of energy/NIL should have gone into retaining DJ. Despite his flaws, I think he’s just about the best we could expect to get right about now, and he would surely improve with another year on the team.

It’s possible we lose the Cal, Colorado and maybe even the UCLA game without him making some big throws. With DJ, I would feel very confident about next year’s schedule outside of the Oregon game.

    • 9
      1

DJU would dominate the MW teams if he came back. But he’s not and no one player should get the bulk of the NIL funds raised.

I’ve always said I’d take him back. He’s a good QB, just not the dominate one that Clemson and OSU fans imagined.

      • I would question his instruction this past year.

He’s going to learn a new system wherever he lands.

I really like Gutridge, and I think BG is more than capable of running a well oiled machine. I would love for the coaches to realize what kind of machine it is.

    • Is there any way to know how much NIL money is being spent and on who?

I agree with Bill. We don’t have a huge and sustainable amount of NIL. Spending the bulk on a single player could screw us for other position needs.

The whole NIL connection with the AD is a mystery to me. I have to assume the coaching staff influences or ultimately decides what players need to get the deals and for how much, but it’s not the school’s money, so do they have to negotiate with the collectives?

      • Rivals transfer page shows DJ “intends to enter transfer portal” so perhaps he isn’t officially gone?

I expect him to go but perhaps he is a change of heart and stays. I’m not sold on him coming back even though he could dominate the schedule.

          • It seems like DJs main transfer targets have already got a transfer QB (Louisville) or already are planning on taking Cam Ward instead (FSU). I imagine DJU is looking for the biggest bag possible and there may not be a big bag available. I would definitely take him back next year if he doesn’t find a new home.

          • I’m hoping that we still have Gabarri Johnson on board and that means McCoy is the bridge guy. DJU is a great locker room guy but I think we’d be better off for the future to run with what we got considering we can grab Johnson.

      • You can figure out who by seeing who is doing promotions/appearances etc. How much is unknown. Jerseys with player names on them are a good indicator. It was mostly DJU and DM this year. Last year it was Colletto. I don’t think the AD plays much role in the decision making. Maybe indicates x player is worth more than others.

I am not sure if the Beavs collective sets up the opportunities or connects the athletes with partners. Might be both. Some athletes would be more marketable than others. Like a DJU who had a deal with Beats but that was before he came to OSU.

It would seem for the typical OSU athlete, they would have to make appearances around town for charity or some kind of event.

    • 3
      2

Personally I think DJ was gone whether smith stayed or not. He’s looking for big bucks and we aren’t willing to pay, and rightfully so.

      • Agree. It is obvious he doesn’t have a long run in the NFL ahead of him, so he is chasing whatever cash he can right now due to the NIL rule changes allowing it. He took a chance to come to OSU and revive his image nationally but JS leaving and the PAC12 circumstances threw a monkey wrench into it all.

        • If Mannion and Luton can stick around on the fringes of the NFL, so can DJU.

For some QBs, the path to the pros might be through the XFL.

    • 2
      1

Starting QBs at top 5 programs, with security in their position, are in the portal; I don’t know any amount of NIL would’ve helped in DJU’s case, esp. with the added burdens of a new OC/QB coach.

Very much, “if I have to spend another season learning another system, I will go to a place that offers additional benefits besides playing time,” I think.

  45. Per Canzano

    Beavs and Cougs split –

Exit fee for the 10 – $65M total
Future revenue – $190M (Rose Bowl payments and NCAA tourney credits etc)
    All Pac 12 Assets

Have a guarantee to split liabilities equally with the 12

  46. 1
    1

Apparently this was very close to being done for Months but two of the 10 (not identified) pleaded poverty and wouldn’t sign off and then relented when the Supreme Court ruling came down.

      • And Ca/UA are schools that we often recruit against for California/Texas athletes. They likely used the murkiness they caused as negative recruiting fodder too.

If the settlement had been agreed to 2 months ago, would JS still leave? I think he still would have and would’ve looked even worse than he already does.

        $265m isn’t $400m but it is a start for 2 years.

        • That figure is just future revenue plus the exit fees, but doesn’t include the value of the Pac12 assets. I think that’s where the $400m estimate came from

          • That should be plenty of coin to sustain the athletic department for 2-3 years. Enough time – hopefully, to get into a long term deal with. P4 conference or to rebuild the Pac back into a P5 conference.

I still think there will be one mega football conference for the blue bloods. Will be interesting to see what happens to FSU and the ACC.

    • 6
      1

      Classic Pac 12 leadership.

How did we ever keep it together for so long?

It’ll be fun to not do that anymore.

The next Conference by-laws should include a clause that only OSU and Wazzu can decide by consensus to dissolve or sell the Pac Conference. Next time they have numbers in a similar situation, they’ll remember this.

      • guys like that Tony Altimore character on twitter kept talking about how the previous bylaws were written by UCLA lawyers and left intentionally vague, as a sign of next level genius. As if they wrote them in a way that the 10 would be given an escape clause because of the vague bylaws.

        Whoops!

    • 3
      2

There should be quite a few options such as rebuilding the conference or using it as a bargaining chip to join another conference.

    • 5
      3

I’d prefer to rebuild a 10 max football member PCC but I feel like I’m in the minority. Be creative in finding a streaming partner but also seek out a TV deal, call The CW, it’s in every market they’ve shown an interest (ACC games).

I hate the idea of joining a mega conference.

Cal/Stan are gonna be back on the market soon. I think eventually this all collapses back to regional leagues and getting ahead of it makes sense.

        • I said they’ve shown interest, I’d assume they’d up production value as a primary product. ACC contract is overflow games (and I’m guessing is ACC TV production) and LIV pays all the costs.

In it pretty much every home was the point. TBS/TNT could be an option.

I just don’t like the idea of joining a coast to coast and waiting for the next collapse.

        • I remember about 15-20 years ago the CW would show the P-10 game of the week. It was one of the ways I could still see the Beavs when living in Utah, so I’m cutting them a little slack!

    • 4
      1

      screw that noise

Not sure what everyone is in love with the Big XII for, but their best team will be Utah.

And they literally helped to dismantle the Pac 12.

They can kick rocks, unless they come with some better ideas than us slumming with a glorified MWC, with more travel.

  47. 7
    2

Beavs offer Idaho transfer LB Xeree Alexander. As a true freshman, he was Idaho’s top defensive player. Had Arizona and ASU offers out of HS. Not sure how he ended up at Idaho, but looks like he would be a good get.

  48. 4
    2

I’ll hold back on feeling really bad about Chiles leaving unless or until he turns out to be a star at MSU. Despite all of the hype around him, he is still quite unproven and in the times that we did see him, he showed that he was still quite unpolished. Even with Smith leaving, I feel like it was a dumb decision for Smith to Chiles’s redshirt. It seems like he could have really benefited from an extra year putting on some weight and fine tuning.

    • I think someone said that Johnson is FSP too. Idk if that’s true but would give us another angle for him as I think Gundy formerly recruited Johnson.

      • Johnson is FSP. As is Malachi Durant. As is the Idaho LB that entered the portal today named Xe’ree Alexander. Oregon State lost a LB to Boise late in the day on Wednesday. Wouldn’t be surprised if Alexander would fill that spot.

      • Supposedly not a top target at qb. I wonder if there are other targets we don’t know about. At this point I would be very happy with Johnson.

  49. So I guess Anderson is going to announce in two days which means he won’t be able to sign. With the way he’s been I wouldn’t trust a commitment from him too much heading into the next signing day.

  50. 12
    1

Noticed one of Gabarri Johnson most recent (if not the most recent) followers and follow backs is Director of Player Personnel Todd McShane.
    I’d say that’s a good sign there’s a visit coming up.
I’ve been asking around for a week and can’t get anybody to say anything about him.

    • This would be a good way to wrap up the QB class. Get a guy with game experience (McCoy) and a guy with potential (Johnson), and let them battle it out.

      • I hope they get him. I would be happy with the 3 we picked up. Definitely adds some much needed depth. If Johnson can prove he can pass well and adjust to d1 football he could be a star with our schedule. I hope bray would have a competition at qb and let the best win.

  51. 12
    2

Hey, before I forget – Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, Happy New Year everyone. I really enjoy a place to commiserate and celebrate the Beavers as their fortunes dictate.

I’d love to see Oregon State and Wazzu do something very creative and outside the box with their new status as the “Pac 2” – somewhere between being an “outlaw league” or one of those crazy independent minor leagues for baseball. Whatever the college football equivalent of the Portland Mavericks is – that would be great. Grant eligibility to players who left for the NFL, but still have college eligibility. The NCAA doesn’t seem to care about anything but screwing over Michigan these days.

If Oregon State has Tier 1 media value, as Florida State’s lawsuit claims, then so does Washington State.

    • Interesting or odd that the author doesn’t mention the Big West, maybe that is off the table or was never on the table. Seems like the best fit.

      • Beavs would be at the mercy of the other conferences schedules and I don’t think Canzano looked at the other conference’s teams.

BIG10 will have an odd number of teams so a team will always be looking for a weekend series during conference play. BIG12, ACC and SEC will have an even number of teams playing baseball so no help there.

Big West has an odd number but would expect USC and UCLA to fill that gap. MW has an odd number of teams but you’d only want to play the good ones.

Going independent is looking pretty tough to get an at large berth.

Will need to schedule 54 games and get the RPI high enough to be equivalent to a major conference team. Looking at this year and last year’s schedule, you’d want an equivalent to 30 conf games plus 12 good out of conference play. Then 12 mid week games.

I think the WCC might have to work and then schedule very tough early in the year.

Man this bowl season sucks. Used to watch and pull for all the Pac12 teams to win in order for the conference to be successful and respected.

Can’t stomach to watch any of the former teams play and now I hope every single one of them get blown out.

    Go Beavs

I’ll never watch the traitorous 10 again. Well… I am considering going to the 0regon- MSU game just to boo Smith and crew.
If someone was to throw a dildo at Smith during the game, would that be a get kicked out of the game thing or a get arrested thing? Asking for a friend

      • Just make sure it’s a green dildo. Then head for the nearest exit (no pun intended).

This will raise even more questions.

How should OSU use its settlement funds to improve its solvency for the long term? Anyone know how the stadium is financed? Seems like that could become a real liability if they don’t get included in the next round of conference realignment?

I think it would be kinda cool if they used Smith’s $3M buyout to build up the NIL collective…

    • The stadium cost was $150 million. $100 million was paid upfront. The other $50 million has been financed over the next 40 years (I believe). Barnes has stated with the stadium upgrades the net cash flow increase to the AD will be between $1-$2 million. They did a great job making sure the stadium would not be a burden on the AD budget.

      1

Can’t use athletic funds for NIL. That’s all private funding.

Reser debt payments are under $3M per year. Majority of the funds were donor contributions. So it doesn’t appear that it will become crippling debt.

Apparently USC is trying to poach Aidan Chiles before he officially transfers to MSU.
Would love to see it happen and see Smith get fucked over

  56. Xe’ree Alexander, the Idaho portal transfer LB, has been offered by Beavs, Wazzu, Cal, Kansas, Minnesota, Montana State, LaTech, UCF, and Washington.

  57. It looks like yesterday was Gabarri Johnson’s birthday. I noticed one person who posted a Happy Birthday message to him had a video of him at UW. I don’t know if the video was shot yesterday, but if shows GJ running through the stadium tunnel and onto the playing field and you can almost make out a message on the junbo tron that says “Happy Birthday” on it.
But the video is so shaky it could be something different.

Anyway, would make sense he’s being recruited by UW as well considering he’s from Tacoma and he wanted to play closer to home.

      • Doesnt mean he 100% going to either school. The path to a starting job is clearer at OSU. But I couldnt blame the kid for wanting to play close to home and for a playoff team, even if it means sitting.

      • Cool, good to know. How did you figure out when it was taken? He did seem more youthful in the video. Like I wouldnt think a transfer would get much joy from running onto a college field.

There was some other video from a trainer who appears to be Malachi Durant’s dad. You can see GJ throwing to Malachi in the video

        • I didn’t realize the number of QB’s that Lavelle Durant works with. Saw a couple of pics of LD working with Aidan Chiles in the IPF, and in Reser. Also saw a short vid clip of LD and DJU in Reser.

    • Montiel over Throckmorton. Interesting.

What ever happened to Jason White? He was a highly touted OL, but has never cracked the two-deep.

    • OL looking rough. Strand, Stark, levengood, Miller and Morano. 2 normal starters, Stark rotated during season and 2 guys that got little to no meaningful snaps to my knowledge.

    • Looking like a 3-0 type of game. Defense should be able to fly around.

Interior OL looks ok, tackles are thin. I’ve always had high hopes for Morano, he has the frame and ability, but had not been able to add the weight needed to play more.

Good to see Tufaga on the two deep. Wonder if he is healthy.

ND is just going to try to run at the Beavs. They won’t throw very much and the Beavs secondary will get some opportunities if they do.
ND is basically playing their entire second string on offense and several DL guys already opted out. ND honks say this was ND deepest team in years and expect a really lopsided game.
They are of course ignorant about anything OSU related and consider the Beavs an easy win since DJU and Chiles are already gone and Martinez is out.
Limit bad turnovers and stuff the run, let Bolden make some plays and go with the same playbook from last year with BG and a stout defense should get another nice bowl win for OSU.

      • 10
        1

These non-playoff bowl games are so worthless.
Everybody’s B or C team facing off to prove which conference is mightier.
People were getting on Utah’s ass for not having a good offense yesterday, even though they were down to their 4th string QB and several other players have hit the portal from a team a team decimated by injuries all year.
It’s not even worth watching most bowl games anymore.

        • You must remember if SEC teams lose it is because they either were disappointed at the matchup, too many guys on the team declaring for the draft or the gap between games is too long.
All other conferences are just bad teams getting exposed as not deep enough to deal with bowl challenges

        • 5

The only way to save the college football postseason is a college basketball-like postseason tournament. 12 team playoff is nowhere near good enough. All 9 conference champs with an auto berth next season. Then hand out 39 at-large berths. Top 16 seeds with byes to round of 32. Largely eliminated bowl games and puts an end to the transfer portal in December and conference chaos becomes a significantly less impactful. Seems pretty easy to do and they’d make a lot more money just off selling tickets

        • 1

Ummm, in case you weren’t paying attention…..

Bryson Barnes wasn’t the 4th string QB. He started and/or played in most of the Utes games this season.

          • The way he played yesterday, he may want to re-think going into the portal! Hopefully, it will be a hard no for any Beav coaching staff interest!

          • Ummm….I was paying attention as much as I needed to.
Brandon Rose was the favorite to backup Cam Rising during Spring ball and was battling with Barnes and Johnson during Summer but had a season ending injury in August. Barnes and Johnson were viewed as 3 or 4 coming into the season. You’re right, Barnes played the majority out of those 2, so he was their 3rd stringer rather than 4th.
Point still stands, Utah was a shell of a team in their bowl game(and much of the season)

Malik Murphy to Duke…per ESPN. I don’t know if it was posted already.
So Beavs are no longer chasing Thompson from Oregon either but may be down to Johnson from Mizzoo? And only the local kid from Portland area and McCoy already in as a transfer?
Any other qbs in n the board?

    • I’m sure they’ll move down the list if we don’t land Johnson. There are plenty of guys out there and if Montiel is truly our #2, we’re going to need to add someone else’s.

      • 7
        3

I’m pretty disappointed if Thompson was willing, and we just ignored him.

I would take him over Johnson. But I’m good with Johnson as well.

I still expect BG to be starting next season. And I figure the QB room will learn from him. And I’m good with that.

    • The 247 account of events doesn’t convey the full extent of Apple’s enthusiasm for the deal. From the original in the Seattle Times we see:

At 9:06 am of Thursday August 3rd “Kliavkoff tells Cauce that Eddy Cue, Apple’s vice president of services wants to talk to her about ‘linear,’ that is regular TV, as opposed to streaming.” [My guess is that Cue was going to tell her that the current cable/linear deals were not replicable or that maybe Apple could provide some games on linear as well as their streaming service.]

At 2:51 pm that Thursday “Kliavkoff emails all the presidents saying Cue wants to share some news.” [Also curious, since the original proposal had been tendered and discussed two days earlier. My supposition is that Cue wanted to expand on the streaming/linear nexus he proposed to Cauce.] “Cauce responds to the group: ‘All ears.!!!”

At 9:59 that night “Cue forwards all the Pac 12 presidents an announcement highlighting that Apple now has 1 billion paid subscribers around the world. ‘I run all of Services at Apple and I thought our last quarter results just announced shows what we can do,’ Cue writes. ‘I really appreciate the time we have had and the more I go through the opportunities the more confident I am that together we will offer the best college football product in the world.'”

[Precisely: which is what alarmed FOX and spurred them into turning Cauce’s head. The Seattle Times story is interesting but by focusing on the personal (Cauce’s departing note to Schultz and Murthi and their responses, as opposed to the double dealing, corporate intrigue and missed opportunities represented by the streaming deal), the story misses the main point.]

      • PS: At the same time Schultz, in the wake of Cue’s enthusiasm is telling the group (including Cauce) “We look forward to building a world-class partnership” Cauce is texting back and forth with her AD, Jen Cohen (who has already been interviewing with SC for that job) after the UW board meeting that night.
Cauce: “we’re in this together” [a doubly interesting observation given Cohen’s incipient move to SC]; Cohen: “we got this!” [meaning the move to Big 10.] Completely unethical all around.

  59. If Jordan Anderson does commit to the Beavs, early signing period has passed yeah? So we’d be hoping he stays committed until the Feb signing day? Definitely would like to see a high star recruit still come to the Beavs but call me skeptical that a guy that already decommitted from 1 school would still hang tough with us for 6+ weeks. While I do think Bray and staff have done the best that they could given the circumstances, this period has had the runner-up status for us once again. We were invited to the ball but the shoe didn’t fit. Anyway, have a great Christmas everyone!

  60. 10

here’s another candidate for OSU’s “financial angel”—Rajeev Badyal is head of Amazon’s Project Kuiper (low level satellite) program; who got Musk’s Star Link off the ground previously. Badyal got his master’s degree in electrical and computer engineering at OSU.

  61. 10

Looks like this the coach Ford connections will pay off in more ways than Johnson

“And yet another connection is Malachi Durant- the Beavers’ highest rated pledge in the 2024 class and Johnson have grown up together, while Durant’s father has been Johnson’s private quarterback coach for years.

Durant is expected to sign with the Beavers in February.”

    • 11

Yep, I think this solidifies Durant. Huge news for the Beavs. I like this move for sure. QB room looking solid for the next few years if peeps stick around and can develop

  62. 18

Funny thing is our QB room is more talented on paper than it was any year of the JS era except last year.

Gundy is already a better recruiter than Lindgren was.

  63. 2
    26

I’m curious what’s in this for Johnson? Why would he want to go play in the WCC?

Is our goal to remain the PAC-2 and play WCC schools? Sorry, been super busy might have missed something, but that’s what it looks like.

  64. So KHJ just posted after the Raiders win…”Next stop – Go…”

Seems like an indicator that he’s ready to officially join Beavs soon.

  65. Glad we landed Johnson. Should make for a competive camp next fall fornthe QB1 spot.
McCoy has more experience, along with BG. Johnson to me is a shorter version of Chiles. Very mobile and quick burst, plus a strong arm and can make the deep throws. My only concern is size and balls getting batted down by taller D-Linemen.

    • I am glad Johnson is coming too. I think Johnson coming means BG or Throckmorton is planning to move on. That would be 5 scholarship QBs in the room and 6 with Montiel. Maybe they ask Guttridge to grayshirt.

It would be nice if BG stayed and tried to win the job in spring and fall. Though would not blame him for deciding to move on and pursue his academic goals. We’ll see after the bowl game.

        • 12

He’ll likely become a doctor, maintain his health, and have good career earnings…

          He’s a STUDENT athlete.

Hope he has a great game, and either he or Fen get the MVP…would love to see Fen have a big game.

          • He’ll probably be the MVP, and then Notre Dame will poach him.

Then he’ll go on to two consecutive national championships… as a game manager who just fucking wins games.

      • I’m guessing Throckmorton is gone if he is behind Montiel on the bowl game depth chart. Taking both McCoy and Johnson suggests at least one guy is leaving.

    • Pretty quiet press given he was a 4* with offers from UW, UO, many others….hopefully it’s a function of announcement timing.

But a 4* commit is very good signing, particularly in the current context…

      • Think announcing on Xmas has a lot to do with it. Also, 24/7 had him going to Beavs the minute he entered the portal so perhaps the lack of a “chace” also played into it.

  66. So the raiders are pretty much not making the playoffs right? Seems there is like a sliver of a chance but I’m not sure because I don’t really watch the nfl anymore. Would definitely be nice to get him on campus sooner than later. Afraid of a luck o da Beavs thing of them offering him a promotion or a raise or even someone else coming in and swooping him up.

  67. How do quarterback gurus compare our top three QB’s? I would really like to see BG stick around next season. He has the best experience of our QB room and actually had a better record than DJ the previous year. I think McCoy looks good on film and is proven at the FCS level. But he was throwing to a big tight end target and a big receiver with a wide catch radius. He could have beat Cal if he had better players around him. Would like to see those two receivers transfer as well. Gabarry seems to have a strong arm and good wheels. Reminds me of Sanders from CO, 5′ 10″ 193 pounds gonna get beat up a lot if they can catch him.

It’s that time every 3 years…AB hosting renews in 29 days, so we need to determine the fate. If you are a reader who hasn’t donated this year please do at this time as it will go towards this (lucrative) hosting fee. They almost doubled it to $539. Biden!! I’m going to try to talk them down. The donate button is at the top of the page under contact/donate. If you are someone who donates already then please don’t do it again.

    • 5
      1

Received a $100 donation for this already (Thanks, George!). So it looks like the path will be to keep AB up and running. Keep them coming until we hit the target, guys. I am more than happy to keep AB up, but I don’t want to pay out of pocket and take a loss doing it.

I’m talking with the hosting company now, and they make some legit points about why their fee is higher than others. We do have good speed and no down time, and we have unlimited email accounts. Anyone who makes a donation: i will make you an email account with an angrybeavs.com extension if you want one. Just write me and ask.

    • 2
      1

I talked them down to $350, so we need $150 more to cover this. This is actually a pretty good deal given the service we get. Again, anyone making a donation, if you want an at angrybeavs.com email address in return just write me privately with the username you’d want, and I will set that up. You WILL need software like Thunderbird or MS Office to access it, and you’ll have to know how to enter POP/email information into that software.

I’ve actually never done this for anyone else, so I’m not entirely sure it’s possible. But I think it would work if you have a host software – that’s how I access mine, so I don’t see why it would be different. Don’t hate me if it doesn’t work, though.

Two $50 donations came through from Marco and Gene. We only need $50 more. Great work, dudes. Sorry, Nuc, but it looks like you will have to have high blood pressure for another 3 years.

    • Honestly the easiest is auto deduction $x amount per month via PayPal. Set, and go. You won’t miss 5-10 a month and better value than a fake rumor site like Angie’s list.

Thanks to David, Sean, and Stephen. We’re now covered for the next 3 years. That was fast and painless. Thanks, guys.

If anyone wants to make a donation on top of this, I will split the remaining with OldBeav (OOB) and NiceBeaver as they do help with administrative/recruiting stuff, and it’s always nice to give out any windfalls.

    • Thanks everybody!

I’m curious what people think of our new QB room?
With BG, Gevoni McCoy and Gabarri Johnson likely in the battle for top spot come Spring camp.

      • I like the room. Better read on BG after Friday. Do we get Civil War BG or Bowl MVP BG? He had a great game vs Florida last season, however I think he’s gone after this season from reading his interview earlier in the year. Hopefully we blow them out and the coast kid gets some reps.

      • 1
        1

Like I said above, I would really like to see BG stick around next season. Reminds me of Sanders from CO, 5? 10? 193 pounds gonna get beat up a lot if they can catch him.

    • If the Beavs don’t address the needs they have in the trenches, they’ll struggle to win 7-8 games next year. Bray has done a great job building a good staff and filling some key positions but if he can’t get a couple difference makers on DL and OL, it won’t matter. This is where I’d spend NIL

    • Scratch out Gray, he’s leaving. If he came back it would be his 6th year and he walked on senior day.

These guys walked on Sr day so most likely not coming back.
      Erhart
      Spencer
      Stover

Add Hayes. He’s on scholarship at kicker.

      • That is flipped around in my mind. Hayes is a senior according to what I can find unless he somehow used a redshirt this year (?), and Joshua Gray is with the team in El Paso (despite not playing the bowl game), so I still consider him likely to use his 6th year.

        • Hayes qualified for a redshirt this year. Only played in 4 games so he’s eligible to come back with the extra covid year. And he didn’t walk on sr day.

Gray would be a big surprise if he came back. He signed in the 2018 class.

Great to know we are funded for another three years!

    We’ve got lurkers and writers,
    newbies and old farts
    analysts and observers
    calm souls and cranky ones
those who study and those who fly by the seat of their britches

But we’re all interested to see how these next years go for our Beavs, landscape is gonna change for sure.
    GO BEAVS !

  71. 11
    2

Even sweeter to poach Anderson from the Ucks, lol. For all the turmoil, I feel hopeful about the program. Obviously we haven’t seen the new product on the field. Recruiting under Riley was atrocious, so for some reason this feels good to not take a step back after losing Smith.

  72. 13
    2

Btw: AB is about to become 15 years old in a week. With the new 3 year extension, that will put us at 18 years! If we make it to 20 we should definitely do a get together somewhere out West. Maybe at a Wyoming game. ;)

  73. 11

Been a few years since I donated.

Hopefully that puts us over the top or close.

    Stay degenerate ya filthy animals.

    Go Beavs

  74. 2

The Pac dying is probably a good thing for men’s hoops since this conference has become such a joke…….

Latest ESPN bracketology only has 3 teams in (it’s says four but I’m obviously blind), Arizona as a 1 seed and Colorado and Utah as 8 seeds.

    https://www.espn.com/espn/feature/story/_/page/bracketology/ncaa-bracketology-2024-march-madness-men-field-predictions

I haven’t watched one iota of men’s hoops this year so maybe they have a punchers chance since the conference is so bad.

  75. So Anderson did sign. Looking at all the players coming in this year it’s a total of 24 players including transfers and the three verbals. I wonder how many more players they’ll end up taking.

  76. Some hints on the offense from Anderson’s commitment interview:

“Coach Gundy has been around some good offensive minded coaches and it sounds like he wants to be multiple and run a lot of different things.

    ?
“I know he wants to pass the ball and that’s exciting. He’s a former quarterback and a smart guy so I’m confident the offense we’ll run will be an explosive one.

  77. One positive benefit that can help with the remaining units that need players:

They’ve landed their “big” commitment from the early cycle, and currently have a full QB room in Dec.

All that makes it easier to persuade players they want to come.

  78. So how would everyone like this roster to be filled out?

I would like to get an experienced wr in the portal. I think we have a lot of unproven talent that can be very good but they’re still unknown and I don’t know if anyone can step into a number 1 receiver. I think bolden is good but his size doesn’t really allow to be the guy.

Bray said he wants a TE. He said they were moving terry to lb so I wonder if they’ll still do that. If so we should definitely get a starting caliber TE in the portal.

I think the interior offensive line is looking pretty good experience and depth wise but we need guys that can be a starting tackle. Not sure if we can count on tank. Strand was getting bullied in the civil war. This is probably my biggest concern. If we can’t protect the qb it’s not going to matter who’s back there. Definitely think we need a transfer that can compete for a starting job. Hopefully De van has his eyes on some quality guys.

Seems like another DL or two would be helpful but we do have that guy from Minnesota that I forgot about who will be ready to go this year. I’m really high on some of the young talent here tho.

I think they’re still looking for someone at ILB. It would nice to get that guy from Idaho. He’s been getting a lot of good offers I guess. Not sure how much we still need at OLB. Seems like they’re pretty good there and I think stover is coming back but I could be wrong.

DB they’ve done a good job there so far but we don’t have much proven talent at safety. Hopefully Julian is back and they move him back to safety. Kane has been pretty good in limited time but I think he’s a walk on so definitely need someone to push him but maybe he’ll be the next great walk on safety. Having Thomas back will be huge but idk where they’ll play him. Hopefully heyward can grab a guy or two.

Kicker and punter is kind of an unknown. Does Hayes have anymore eligibility and do we really trust him? Hopefully someone can step up like sappington did. We need a new punter as well.

These are just what I’m thinking. I’m most concerned with OT for both starter and depth. If they don’t have two solid guys there that could really hold the team back.

    What do y’all think?

    • A few guys who i think we’re still pursuing in the portal.

Cashius Howell – Bowling Green OLB
Jahmal Banks – Wake Forest WR
      Jeremiah Erby – Cal CB
      Benjamin Yurosek – Stanford TE
      Anton Juncaj – Albany DE
      LaJohnTay Wester – FAU WR

Not a complete list by any means, but what stands out to me are WR/TE/OLB/CB are positions we seem to be focused on

        • I’m getting that sense, too. Based on matchup advantages at DL most opponents next year aren’t going to run a lot of tight formations with 12, 13 personnel. Air Force, Oregon and Purdue are the exceptions.

So, they’ll try spread formations and make us play nickel or dime. Probably need a coverage outside linebacker who can convert to a strong safety if needed. Another experienced corner would be nice in case we have to play a team that requires quarters coverage.

      • I’d hope we went in on Erby. Think we were in final few before he chose Cal. I think I’m good with WR actually. Hopefully East takes a step forward being a JUCO guy, Valdin and Bolden would be those 3/4 year guys next year. We never got to see Valdez due to injuries but he was very productive, albeit at a lower level. Another LB couldn’t hurt to help the depth out.

        • Ya I think there is a lot of good young potential at wr but I guess it’s a matter if you think someone will step up or want to grab a proven guy. I think one proven wr transfer would be good. I also think Valsin is good and hopefully Hynson has a good feel for the room. Haven’t been too impressed with them but someone made it seem like he wasn’t allowed to play whoever he wanted.

      • Good info thanks! I was thinking about yurosek that would be a huge get imo. Have you heard anything about the Idaho LB? Seems like a logical transfer given the connections.

        • I should have included the Idaho LB in that list. Though I haven’t heard anything specifically about him other than we offered him pretty much immediately after he hit the portal.
As with many of the guys on that list, they may not be coming from big name programs, but these are all very productive players at the collegiate level.

  79. In honor of AB’s 15th Anniversary: who was the most talked about player in the history of the site? Not necessarily the best, but the most prominent?

  80. 1
    2

Some of the more hilarious players: Pankey, Kreb brothers, Cade Cowdin, Wilder McAndrews. These were all Riley’s best efforts once Gilstrap passed (the true brains behind the Riley era). Then that little safety Jack called Clouseau. I forget his name. Very early in the GA era. He made an INT in a scrimmage and looked hilarious, falling down as he caught it, etc.

  81. 18

I think Jack Colletto is the hero of AB for all time. He went from an awkward throwing qb (aka Crazy Legs Colletto) to become the true image of AB and OSU- JackHammer, as well as wining the hearts and minds of multiple female sport’s journalists over the years.

Colletto should be enshrined in OSU lore and the HOF for how far he excelled as a Beav during his 6 years.

  82. 1
    1

OT- I didn’t realize Big Tinks lost out on Marty Maurer’s (former Beav TE great) 7’4″ son. The 4-star recruit is going to Grand Canyon over the Beavs. Geez!

  83. I’m really glad we don’t try to get Purdue qb transfers.

Brohm is either a genius Coach or the ACC was dreadful this year because there is no possible way that qb could legit win 10 of 12 games.

    • Louisville beat Notre Dame with that dude at QB although Louisville ran it 40 times and only passed 24 times in that game. Maybe we should do the same vs ND.

  84. What’s the latest with DJU? Is Florida State still interested or is it Cam Ward for them? Is DJ going to have to turn pro to save face?

  85. anyone else notice Caleb Williams trying to hog the spotlight, or at least reflect in the glory of Miller Moss’s performance, after SC won last night? or am I just being too cynical and the guy was just happy for his teammate?

    • I’m going to guess that no other school in the country has the HC, OC and DC positions filled by alums. This is going to be an interesting experiment.

Much of the pressure is going to be on Gundy to produce a good offense. Defense looks to be in good hands. I figured the hire would be a DB background to even out the strengths of the staff.

One spot to fill, Cookus has not announced his decision.

          • No idea. But I’d assume one or two of the coaches would divide it up. One guy takes punt, kick, XP/FG. Other guy takes punt return, kick return.

            Heyward- DC and Safeties
            Perkins- Corners
            Tuiaki- DL
            Cooper- ILB
            Huppert- OLB

            Gunderson- OC and QB’s
            DeVan- OL
            Boyer- TE’s
            Ford- RB’s
            Hynson- WR’s

You only get 10 assistants. And if people don’t think Huppert is the OLB coach then they better check his social media headers.

          • The Beaver Football Twitter account tweeted out 9 assistant coaches with similar-styled graphics as each one has been hired; There has been no tweet about Huppert.

  86. Cashius Howell – Bowling Green OLB- 73 PFF grade, a few years of eligibility left. Looks solid.
Jahmal Banks – Wake Forest WR- 78 PFF grade as a starter in the ACC. 6’4. Yes please.
    Jeremiah Erby – Cal CB-
Benjamin Yurosek – Stanford TE- had one good season in 2021, was average in 2022/23
Anton Juncaj – Albany DE- 91 PFF grade playing FCS competition. Idaho guys just played against him not long ago. 6’3 273 seems like tweener size.
LaJohnTay Wester – FAU WR- 83 PFF grade last season. Another little guy at 5’11, 164

  87. Just saw that the Beavs are the visiting team. Curious about our uniforms. Team has been practicing with orange helmets. Maybe white pants, white jerseys and orange helmets?

  88. 2
    3

Hayes confirmed in an interview that he’ll be back next year. Wonder if the kicker commit goes elsewhere now or maybe he’s promised the scholarship once Hayes is gone.

  89. Snap judgements on new coaching staff, they are better recruiters but the old staff was better at player development. Defense concepts and strategy should be same. Offense TBD. In game coaching should be better. Hope Gundy as good as Bray with halftime adjustments.

    • DeVan has the most important challenge of the whole group.
Gundy has an advantage because Lindgren was getting pretty stale and his goal should be more than “balanced offense”. How about developing an offense that can attack a defense and be successful based on the flow of the game and circumstances?
As far as player development, if guys buy in and out in the work, how much is learned technique and how much is simply maturing physically, mentally, emotionally and experience playing that becomes player development? I think Jayden Grant is an example of a guy who just matured and eventually it all clicked for him. I’d guess a lot of guys who must work and grind will grow/develop if they stay the course.
Don’t count Bray out as a great developer of talent given his personality and example.

    • DeVan is the one who needs to really come through on the development side. Coach M set a very high standard. The drop off at all the other spots are fairly non existent.

    • How can you say the old staff is better at player development if this staff hasn’t even had an offseason with the team yet. It’s definitely wait and see on that aspect. I think they’ll do just fine. Bray has said that they want to be a developmental program.

      • Yeah, TE and OL seem to be the biggest areas that we’ll have to prove. We’ve had a different RB coach just about every season and kept 1 of the secondary coaches. Not sure how great Lindgren is as a QB coach. Suppose he elevated Lutton but definitely didn’t do much with Squints and DJU.

        • 1
          3

Our TE success under JS was due to talent, not development. Togiai, Musgrave, and arguably Velling all underperformed in college.

OL, QB and CB were the positions that consistently exceeded expectations based on recruiting vs game performance. All three incoming coaches at those positions have pretty thin track records and a lot to prove.

  90. Astros center field prospect Jacob Melton was a hot commodity on the trade market at the trade deadline this year, as noted by Chandler Rome of The Athletic. Rome relays comments from Houston GM Dana Brown who told a podcast run by the Astros that Melton was “the one guy [he] was afraid to give away” but that he was asked after in “almost every” trade conversation last summer. Rome goes on to note some officials in the organization internally valued him more highly than top prospect Drew Gilbert, who was part of the package the club dealt to New York to re-acquire Justin Verlander. Melton, 23, was the club’s second-round pick in the 2022 draft and slashed .245/.334/.467 across 99 games split between the High-A and Double-A levels last year.

  91. Not sure if it was mentioned but Beavs lose 2025 4 star TE commit naone. He is the #1 player in Oregon in 2025. Said the Beavs aren’t eliminated but he wants to get to know the new staff. Hopefully Gundy and Boyer are on him and can bring him back. Need to keep the top in state guys home.

  92. Keith Brown is in the xfer portal. Was the highly rated LB from Lebanon who went to UO for 1 year then xferred to Louisville. Has 2 years left. Beavs were in the mix with him…wonder if there’s interest there or not. Doesn’t look like he got much playing time last season but perhaps he was injured?

    • I’ve heard he was pretty lazy in high-school so who knows now, maybe he’s matured. My understanding is he has the tools to be an absolute animal.

    • I watched several of his hs games in person. Honestly I didn’t come away all that impressed with his skills as a LB.

Thought he was better as a RB

    • Wonder if it’s just a coincidence that he entered the portal the same day one of his former coaches, Heyward, was announced to OSU? Not to mention we have been offering JUCO ILBs lately.

      • Yeah, Beavs seem to be falling apart after leading by nine in the first half. No halftime adjustments by Tinkle of course. Would be a nice and rare conference win, but it feels like it’s slipping away.

        • Beavs had a shot but the way the game is officiated was gonna make it very hard to win and that was before Jordan Pope playing terribly. UCLA grabs and holds on every single possession. Beavs are a far more finesse team. Refs not calling anything the first 30 minutes of the game on UCLA turned the game around. The refs also called Oregon State for a foul every single time UCLA flopped. Beavs obviously aren’t good but would have been nice to see them beat a team that’s been really good the last few years

    • Beavers also offered NMST safety Jeremiah Vessel. And he’s got a visit planned to Corvallis.

Also- offer out to Aiden Sullivan. LB from Butte JC.

  93. 1
    2

Man, MBB went from up 9 to down 14. Lol. UCLA is 5-7. All these 1 point wins vs far lesser competition gave a lot of people false pretense that they’d be something in conf play.

    • Did they? They got blown out by all the major conference teams they played. They have a 200+ NET ranking. Did anyone actually think they were good?

      • Not so much on AB, but there’s enough peeps on the socials really talking them up. Not to mention those wins were all at home. Think it’s a slightly better squad than last year but I don’t see them winning more than a couple conf games. P12 isn’t super good this year but the beavs are still a terrible team unfortunately.

    • Neither team is good but the Beavs do stink more. It’s also maddening how bad of a talent evaluator Wayne is. KC Ibekwe has played major minutes in a relatively close game and is just getting destroyed by UCLA’s front line. He’s just not a rotation level player at this level. Against good or better big men, he’s always the worst player on the floor. Never have understood how he gets minutes at this point.

  94. Was there ever any reason as to why Green, Hodgins, and Hart aren’t playing? I think they are out of eligibility and not really NFL prospects. I didn’t hear anything about injuries.

  95. 1
    2

Looking at tomorrow and it looks like this will be a tough game for Ben. Missing a lot of key pieces on the line and Martinez, Gould, Velling. Notre dame is number 3 in the nation for opponents passer rating and 4th in completion percentage. Hopefully the guys on the Oline can step up and get the run game going and give Ben some time on passing downs.

    • The five and seven step drop backs aren’t going to work today. Receivers need to win at the LOS and create separation, and BG needs to get the ball out quickly

  96. Turnovers seem like they were key in a lot of their games. In their three best wins (usc, duke, nc state) they had a 7-0 interception advantage. In their three losses they had a 1-5 interception deficit. Run the ball, don’t throw picks.

  97. I’m prepared to see a whole lot of OSU. O-Line penalties today. Just dont see them pulling it together with this skeleton crew. Sold out stadium full of noisy Notre Dame fans wont help.
