Twas the night before scrimmage and…something is rotten in the State of Denmark?
- Max Johnson is backing up Kahut. He's a walk-on, freshman place kicker from Astoria who has ~35 yard range and 50% accuracy. So remind me again: why is Trevor Romaine grey-shirting while Connor Hamlett is on scholarship? One would think the coaches, at the very least, would red-shirt Romaine so he's prepared next year. Further, why is nobody asking this question?
- Michael Phillipp is running with the 3rd string. I realize he was hurt, but if he's well enough to practice with the 3's he should be practicing with the 1's. Is this staff actually considering playing Wilder McAndrews over Phillipp?
- If the above scenario does play out and McAndrews takes over for Phillipp, the offensive line would consist of 4 walk-ons. To be blunt: what the hell is going on here? Is this an offensive line or a mutiny of the downtrodden?
This is one of the worst camps I can recall due to these confounding personnel moves, the lack of intensity, and the feeling this team is once again ill-prepared. Everything out of TCU camp says that they're running the ball well, hitting every short to intermediate pass, and are essentially ready to play a game today. OSU, meanwhile, can't even figure out their best lineman is Michael Phillipp or that they need to groom a kicker this year for next year. This is highly frustrating stuff for a team that is supposed to be preparing for the game of their lives versus the #10 team in the land. What is surprising about the Beavers starting slow is that anyone is surprised that the Beavers start slow.
People say this site is negative. Really it's just an exercise in logic and efficiency. If the coaches did things that made sense questions would never be asked.
Travis Rice on Beaver Blitz says they are starting to get a bit ‘chippy’ in camp. Maybe they have turned it up a notch on the intensity levels as we get closer to go time?
I’m not too worried about camp. History tells us that our real camp starts September 4th this year – with three “live scrimmages” over the next month that will teach us “who we are” and “what we are made of,” and allow us to “improve every week.”
We are not going to win a NC this year. Our best-case scenario is 2-1 coming out of September…and 1-2 is worse-case. Then on to P10 play where we’ll string together some W’s and need a team to lose at the end of the year and need to beat O to go to the Rose Bowl…which one of the two (or both) won’t happen and we’ll head to El Paso for the Holidays.

If this is the best Angry can come up with i think we’re in pretty good shape. Flame away.
Some of it could do with having so many veterans. It seems lax because they’ve been there. I think it will turn up a notch and they’ll be okay. I think they’ll find that intensity, as much as a Mike Riley led team can. Cav, Banker…those guys will turn it up.
Plus, stay healthy…injuries all over the country it seems…with the depth that OS usually has, they need to stay healthy.
sigh….
Angry common sense question. There are what 120 (give or take) D1 football teams in the US. Of those, how many do think have TWO scholorship place kickers on the team? Probably not many. Why? It’s a wasted scholorship. I’d bet anything OSU is no different then any other team out there. Have one guy on scholi and another 1-2 walk-ons in the event #1 gets injuried.
I have no doubt OSU offered Romiane the chance to come up this fall and be a walk-on and redshirt. Good chance though, he couldn’t afford that (being out of state) so he opted to greyshirt knowing he wouldn’t be playing at all this year. Smart finacial move on his part.
The reason no one is asking the question why, is because there is no need to.
You continually act like OSU does things 180 degrees different from the other programs around, but the fact is they don’t. OSU, just like every other school has 85 scholorships to give out. And kickers are usually not at the top of that list, especially a #2 kicker.
Next years starting kicker should be in camp now.
-the end.
And if he were here, you’d be complaining that Riley wasted a scholorship on the #2 kicker.
-the end!
“And if he were here, you’d be complaining that Riley wasted a scholorship on the #2 kicker.
-the end!”
That would negate the whole premise of the argument at hand. It’s like telling someone who argues for increased funding for soup kitchens that, if they got it, they would just whine about soup kitchens receiving more money.
Most people make fools of themselves by speaking before thinking. Do you realize that you are writing this stuff down and physically submitting it for the review of others?
I know you are smarter then that, and understand perfectly what my point was. However, I’ll clairfy for you.
Angry is a not a ‘realist’ as he claims, he is a very negative and pesimistic person. It’s his nature, it’s who he is. I am sure its how he is outside of this website. He’s going to find the negative in something when it comes to OSU’s athletic teams. So yes, I have zero doubt that if OSU had two place kickers on scholi he’d complain. His track record shows that. Look no further then this site for proof.
-the end
If you look around you’d be constantly proven wrong. I’ve predicted many wins…heck I predicted OSU would sweep the Ducks in the middle of their miserable/frustrating baseball season. I write what I believe will happen, and sometimes it’s negative and sometimes it’s positive. You remember the negative because it bothers you the most.
I understand precisely what you’re trying to say. You’re saying that, despite all evidence to the contrary (including direct statements), you believe something imaginary. And you’re the one who made it up.
I couldn’t care less what anyone claims they are or are not. I couldn’t care less what others claim they are either. I look at what’s said, and I speak to those points directly. I don’t form some imaginary concept in my head, project it upon my adversary and pretend that I made some point.
I’m not always right, and I’m not always wrong. But I own my ideas. I don’t pretend to own yours. Then again, that would be impossible. You’re so stuck in your imaginary ‘angry head’ that you don’t even have your own ideas.
Good talk.

You guys are a bunch of douches. Clearly Wilder needs the intense reps to develop depth while Michael needs to take it easier.
Jack, your posts are getting worse and worse, get your nose out of angry’s ass for a while. Anti has had some great points you tools.
Same IP as antiangry. How’s that Prozac treating ya, fellow?
You might want to check those IP’s a little more closely. Or you have a serious issue with your website and how it monitors IP addresses.
He’s right, it’s not the same IP. That was a joke.
It’s the same IP as another troll, though.
anti, if you would like readers to take you more seriously try writing a little better. For example, you spelled scholarship as ‘scholorship’ at least 3 times. Just a thought :)
anti-angry, a true gentleman and scholor.
There is nothing on this site to be taken seriously. Why in the world would I care if you, angry, or Jack take me seriously?
the real question is, why, did they fire ungerer who attracted quality kicking recruits and had successful special teams prouction two years ago. Why do they have a kicker in camp who cant hit past 35? Why would a pac 10 school offer a kicker (romaine) who wasnt rated in the top 50 kicking recruits in the country last year? Thats wasting money if you ask me. Nothing they do in beaver special teams makes much sense, riley is butt buddies with read and read doesnt cant formulate a sentence let alone produce a positive outcome in the kicking game.
Romaine is a top kicking prospect.
3-stars is about as good as it gets for a kicker. He was also 9th best kicker (nationally) for 2010. So I’m not sure what you’re talking about.
well maybe you shouldnt listen too closely to the biased pro osu reporting in the portland papers. i think if you researched it more deeply you’d find it interesting that he ever received an offer from osu. Check out this link to the national kicking combine by nike. the walk on kicker who left osu last year actually ranked above romaine in the standings. According to sailer, who is the premier source for kicking talent, romaine was only a division 2 quality recruit. He ranks 50th. http://www.chrissailerkicking.com/top-recruits/2010.html
He also has Ryan Allen as the 4th best punter.
Romaine put up great HS numbers and is ranked 9th. He’s 29th on Sailer’s list, and 4.5/5 rating. How is that DII?
