Once again we're reminded what a week and a win can do. Today, nobody is writing "fire coach xyz"…I must say, it makes our message mixed and weak when all it takes to placate the fan base is one win versus a lousy squad. The fact is these coaches never have or will take the Beavers above a third place bowl. Time keeps chugging by, but their resumes remain the same (or worse). But, okay, we can put that on the back burner and be glad about the win. If we're going to criticize when they do wrong, we have to praise when they do well. It's also exhausting to write the same, negative things over and over. I get it.
Bottom line: A win is always good, but let's not ignore the big picture trends. Riley & Co. have to silence critics via results, not excuses, justifications, hopes, etc. As long as we don't lose sight of that, I'm fine celebrating this win.
Moving forward, the BYU game has a "one step forward, two back" feel to it. Even though BYU is an average squad, I see the Beavers tripping up. I'll go into the reasons why more on Wednesday, but in the meantime discuss anything you'd like and/or ask me any questions you have.
I cringed/chuckled when Riley said “the coaches have done a great job…” during his post game interview, to loud applause of course. Ugh.
Yeah, I keep thinking about the reaction Nebraska fans woud have if Pelini would have said something like that (he wouldn’t have) after going 0-4 then finally beating someone like Purdue. I’m guessing there would be no clapping and not much praise. It would be more matter of factly that they beat a team they were capable of beating and took a step forward, but it all means nothing if they look like crap again next week.
Just Win Baby! I think Sean Mannion is growing into an effective leader who has a bright future at OSU. We need the team playing with purpose and to regularly have as many good performances as we did last week. We won’t get the same breaks on the road.
I think we edge out BYU in a very good game. I think the team has much better energy. Win this one and we will be in a much better mood for the majority of the remaining season. Lose it and we could easily be back in the doldrums.
I think that we’ll win the game, because of this:
Passing Offense:
Oregon State – 30th
BYU – 61st
Rushing Offense:
Oregon State – 104th
BYU – 98th
Total Offense:
Oregon State – 65th
BYU – 93rd
Rushing Defense:
Oregon State – 47th
BYU – 63rd
Passing Defense:
Oregon State – 94th
BYU – 30th
Total Defense:
Oregon State – 65th
BYU – 43rd
Turnover Margin:
Oregon State – -2
BYU – -4
So, if Mannion keeps getting better and throws less INT’s along with us establishing a running game, I think we will win.
We knew a month ago that RB Chris Brown was looking hard at us. I have to think his trip for the Sac St game didn’t scare him away, because his LT, David Keller, decommitted from Fresno and announced that the Beavs and Wazzu were his new favorites… even though he had no offer from the Beavs. Well now he does.
This is the first I’ve heard of both Brown and Keller since they were visiting Fresno on Oct.1. They seem to be looking for their school together, but I don’t know if they’re acting as a package or just out of convenience and familiarity.
that would be sweet to pick up a RB and stockpile another O-lineman. It is too bad though that we wont see the fruits of the increased O-line recruiting for another 2 or 3 years though.
Hey, I was afraid you might be getting sidetracked there, Angry. Good to see the old Angry back even if only in a mild form.
Yes, we hardly saw a perfect game, but the fact that they opened the playbook a little, shows they arent totally brain dead.
I suggest that unless we go back to the old multiple blown play dufus mode in the next game, the players should have a better image of themselves and higher expectations. This win should help hugely in moving the team ahead.
Just the defense going up against a strong offense and doing well is a huge plus. Seven of the AZ points were from one interception.
Its up to Riley to keep the pressure on his coordinators — we will see.
Haha. I have been sidetracked. Also, it is hard to care too much about the Beavers.
Idiots will show up and say “bandwagon fan!”, but I’d retort “Exhausted with the Beavs’ same ol’ routine, and I have a life.”
Nattering nabob of negativity. Don’t break a leg falling off the bandwagon.
Why reinforce the idiot slot opened by angry’s comment? And why quote a lying crook who was usually 100% wrong when using his dumb little phrases?
That can’t help your argument.
Unless it was meant to be funny, and I read it wrong. Then have at it. I believe the crook also said something about hopeless hypochondriacs of history, or some such nonsense.
This week’s game against BYU is exactly the kind of game that should serve as a measuring stick for this coaching staff. A – It’s extremely winnable. If they play at a level equal to how they played against AZ it’s a W. B – Two in a row is a momentum builder into another winnable, albeit on the road, game against WSU.
A decent coaching staff will build on this win and have the team ready to defeat a mediocre to poor BYU squad at home.
A team with a poor coaching staff will regress or come out flat and continue to make the mistakes that led to losses against UCLA and at ASU.
How the Beavers play on Saturday is an excellent indication of the ability of Riley and crew.
Indicator, not indication. Forgive me.
Hes been here for nine years not counting his two year stint before he left and youre going to base your opinion of riley and his staff on the outcome of this specific weekend? i understand your point and i agree that its up to the coaching staff to keep this from being an isolated occurance, but how about putting some of the accountability on the players? to me this game is an indication of where exactly they stand, not an indication of the coaching staffs ability. definitly a winnable game though.
Cliff says that RR was healthy. Yet Michael Doctor started against AZ, played the whole game, and performed well.
Have the coaches finally realized that Doctor should be playing and that RR should be sitting?
I wonder if they weren’t using Rueben in order to get Doctor to better fill his role. Similar to what Chip Kelly is doing with Cliff Harris. Harris is the better athlete but he is always out of position and takes too many risks. So instead of playing the superior athlete he plays the guy that will play in the system. Now Doctor is no Harris but he has been out of position in the past.
Harris is a horrible CB who will get a jump right every now and then and get a pick-six. But he can’t cover a receiver to save his life.
Jordan Jenkins is horrible. Seriously, how do you even put that guy on the field? It’s hard to believe that is Mike Riley’s best option at RB. I don’t think I’ve seen a slower tailback play at this level.
Well what we needed at that time was a guy that could burn some clock and not lose the football. Stevenson was out of the game and Ward was not an option for ball security. Jenkins is not a bad RB if he is just in there to block and act as a check down but I agree he is a pretty bad option as a ball carrier. I hope we can get Agnew and Javon healthy and get Ward to hang on to the ball.
Q: Seriously, how do you even put that guy on the field?
A: He didn’t fumble or have a pulled hamstring or a concussion.
He also has decent speed on passing plays, I think he probably isn’t that agile but fast once he gets moving. He is a nice 3rd down back when Stevenson isn’t available.
Looking forward to watching ASU squash Oregon this week. The combination of no LaMichael James, plus having a revenge minded assistant coach for ASU in Robin Pflugrad, Erickson should have the necessary pieces to upset. Pflugrad worked as wide receivers coach for Kelly a couple years ago. You’d have to think his knowledge of the system can help Erickson gameplan. ASU almost beat a healthy duck team last year, with almost no offensive game. This year the ASU offense should be enough to pull it out.
I’m just looking forward to a chippy ASU team in Autzen for a late game. ESPN will be all over town on Saturday, and the world will get to see the only fandom keeping Fresno State’s off the bottom of the cesspool.
Did I miss something? Robin Pflugrad is listed on their site as head coach for the U of Montana Grizzlies (Jonathan Smith is his OC). I don’t find Robin listed on the ASU site as being on their staff now.
Robin’s son, Aaron, is playing for the Devils, maybe he can channel some of his dad’s inside knowledge!
At any rate, the ASU/Oregon game should be fun to watch, not so sure ASU will “squash” the Ducks but one can hope.
You know what? you’re totally right and I’m totally wrong. For some reason I thought WR Aaron Pflugrad went to ASU to follow his daddy, but they never ended up hiring his dad. Wouldn’t be the first time I spoke before researching. Either way, Aaron Pflugrad knows the Kelly system as well and will still be an asset in the ASU gameplan. Now if only Amanda Pflugrad made an appearance at the game to distract the Oregon players……
Nothing like having a slut for a daughter, Mr. Pflugrad must be proud.
http://www.google.com/search?q=Amanda+Pflugrad&hl=en&rlz=1C1GGGE_enUS398US425&prmd=imvnso&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=9siUTpugFcPViAKgnomBBQ&ved=0CCMQsAQ&biw=1096&bih=719
I’m not sold on ASU, we really should have beaten them and while James is a very good back, the Oregon system is what breaks those long runs – not LaMike. I hate to say it, but I think ASU loses due to lack of discipline. I would love to be wrong.
I have a pretty strong feeling that Oregon’s only losing one more game this year, and that is Nov 12 on the Farm. Other than that they are FAR superior to their other opponents. Like the rest of Beaver Nation, I would love to be wrong. Particularly about November 26.
I think ASU and USC matchup better than Stanford. Stanford is overrated and way to slow to contain Oregon.
Oregon isn’t as good as last year, so anyone can pick them off, but I think ASU and USC have the best shot. Washington will have an outside shot at it, too.
While one win is not a trend, this one seemed especially important in that it was close to a complete game and with some enthusiasm. I really like Halahuni’s attitude toward Hall, and Rileys terse support below.
“I just didn’t appreciate how he was talking to my teammates,’’ said Halahuni, who had asked his coach before the game whether Hall was playing. “A couple times he was in somebody’s face, I was kind of sick of it.”
Oregon State coach Mike Riley was asked whether he was privy to any of the conversations.
“I know the history,’’ Riley said.

I want answers on McCants. What’s up with this dude and was #19 highly recruited? How many stars?
Mccants should have changed positions and contributed to the team 3 years ago when he lost his job to Quizz.
Sorry to keep bringing up the Huskers, but I go with what I know. Due to obvious deficiencies this year, they have moved a couple guys around. They really want to get the athletes on the field. A key INT was made vs. tOSU by a converted WR who has been practicing at DB for 3 weeks. They had a former LB that converted to DE go back to playing a LB position in the game as well because they wanted more beef on the field. They have another converted WR to CB that actually started vs. Wyoming.
I think you gotta get kids on the field. But…maybe McCants isn’t that kind of kid. Basically won’t give you a good effort regardless of the position he plays?
And one of their starting WR’s is a true freshman that played QB in HS. But he’s an athlete and they moved him to WR. They’ve got a WR that moved to RB at well.
Jovan was a greyshirt the same year Quizz came in (entered Winter of ’08-’09 season). He redshirted last year due to a shoulder injury. I don’t believe he was that highly recruited but he ran for something like 2000 yards in Arizona in two years.
Stoops fired apparently, according to canzano
Wikipedia confirms that Mike Stoops was fired: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Stoops
(Note: it appears that this Wikipedia entry for Mike Stoops was just updated within the past hour…)
Beg to differ… There’s lots of firing coach xyz here in Tucson. Good work Beavs!
Under the general discussion tab:
My keg of dirty blonde ale was a huge hit at the tail gate out at the fairgrounds… until all 5 gallons were gone.
Working on a coconut porter now.
I enjoy the games so much more when I go to them with a negative attitude and low expectations, then get proven wrong instead of vice versa. Therefore I will be expecting a loss against the fighting Joseph Smiths this weekend.
HI BN: Your friend the old coach here. You can all relax. I was contacted and have turned down the Arizona job. My plans are still to reclaim my rightful position as Head Coach of the Beavers! I can’t wait to get started. I’ve refined the offense. You won’t believe your eye!
Lets restore the 2 win glory years! I can help. Call me!
PS: I heard that Parker is now Reser. Is that after the guy that made all that crummy potato salad? That stuff always gave me the trots.
get a fucking life asshole
Thank you for the kind words of support. Autographed picture in the mail to you! JB
Pettibonehead is pretty funny.
Thank you for your kind reply. Autographed picture in the mail to you! JB
“Automated response please do not reply”
How’s Shanda? She was hot in high school!
I think he is kind of funny too. At least the guy knows his Beaver history pretty well. My guess is that he has lived in Oregon for quite awhile.
I agree that he was creative on his flaming. If this blog had an ignore button, I probably wouldn’t have used it on him. However, there is a shelf life and his material has gotten old and stale. I would now click the “ignore”.
Hi Mr. Slamadan
As a retired english teacher Jerry asked me to look at your work. First, it is a nice complete sentence with subject, noun and verb in their correct order.
Your punctuation however needs work. Try capitalizing the first word in your sentence. In this case it would be the word “Get”. When your sentence is finished you signify that with a period. Its that little dot like thing below the greater key. OH… just in case you also have math deficiencies the greater key looks like this “>”. Its in the lower right corner of most keyboards.
Warm regards.. Susy Pettibonehead
I did not know Jerry was a retired English teacher. Thank you for letting us know.
OH… and that sign you call a “greater than” sign is actually called a strict inequality. The one you point to has a meaning of “greater than.”
Thank you for your kind words of support.
I’m assembling a staff and I have a few questions for you. Consider it an interview of sorts.
1.) Do you post on any internet sites in excess of 20 times in any given 24 hour period?
2.) How many times per day do you wash your hands?
3.) Are the picture frames in your dwelling perfectly aligned? How often do you measure?
4.) Are you an “excellent driver?”
5.) Do you think K-Mart sucks?
If you answer affirmatively to at least three of the above questions I may have a sideline assignment for you next fall.
I insist on a tidy sideline area. You sound like just the man to keep the paper cups picked up, keep the towels folded and aligned and most importantly fill each Gatorade cup to exactly 2.5 inches and keep them in a perfect 10 X 10 pattern. Sound like fun?
I look forward to working with you next year at Reser.
PS: You may need to shed a few pounds. As I hear your are a “husky” fellow. The sideline can be dangerous as many of my plays go east to west, so the sidelines are always thrilling? JB
Hi Mr. JackBeav, its important to read all the material before you attempt the test or respond. Don’t be in such a big hurry.
It would appear that you have plenty of time on our hands.
Warm Regards, Susy Pettibonehead
Dear Jerry,
I’m not sure you coming back and replacing Mike Riley is a viable option at this point in your “career”. I am somewhat suspicious that you are even hireable anymore. You would think your old friend Rocky Long would have given you some token coaching job in beautiful San Diego, but even he apparently still hold grudges concerning your Flexbone obsession and how many solid defensive efforts were wasted under your tenure. Maybe your could hold Paul Johnson’s clipboard down in Atlanta and kind of let go of the Oregon St. fantasy.
Awww… I didn’t mean to hurt your feelings. I was just pointing out the horrible grammar in your grammar lecture. I’m just trying to help you man. Middle school is not far off.
I could have scolded you for not using a comma after the prepositional phrase you use as an introductory modifier to describe your subject (in this case Jerry). It is, after all, a parenthetical element. But I just decided to poke fun at your poor sentence structure instead.
Why is it that the grammar police are always the worst offenders?
Anyway, I’m sorry I made you go off the rails and become unfunny… and weird… and a little creepy. I promise to be a better pwner of you in the future if you promise not to fail miserably at correcting someone’s grammar.
Btw, what happened to you going to Parker Stadium, home of Beaver Football? Now you’re talking about being at Reser? Which is it man? It’s no fun pwning someone when they’re easily pwned by senility.
Aknowledge him and he gets what he wants. Let Petti-boner go….
Mike Stoops is fired! Wow!
http://www.oregonlive.com/pac-12/index.ssf/2011/10/arizona_fires_coach_mike_stoop.html
The Beavs were the final straw. lol
Watch them hire Leach…
Canzano was already jumping to conclusions that they’d go after Boise st’s Peterson. Every time a job opens, it seems like we hear the same 3 or 4 names. Wonder where Stoops will end up next? the guy didn’t help himself the last few years at Arizona.
Peterson will not go there.
I find it interesting and somewhat relevant (to our situation) that Arizona fired him due to losing 10 of 11. That’s not much worse than Riley…
People act as if you need to give coaches a long leash. I think Arizona saw Stoops had a cap, limitations, and wasn’t going to take the program where they want to go. It’s admirable they cut bait halfway through the season.
Like I’ve pointed out before being a nice guy and NOT being an asshole can go a long ways in covering up other “sins”.
I agree that Stoops being a jerk didn’t help him, but the buyout for him was also only 1.4 million.
Yeah, I saw that this morning, not too bad of a financial loss. Riley may end up working his way out of this slump, but Bobby D. should be smacked upside the head for the 2019 thing just because of how it hand ties the program.
Canzano was babbling about Peterson on his TV spot last night. It sounded like he had some inside info on Stoops. Peterson would be a fool, I would guess that Boise St. will be in a BCS conference when it all shakes out anyway.
I think the new coach will be either Bellotti or Leach.
I think neither would want the job. Kevin Sumlin is a name that has been mentioned and I think he’d be a good fit.
Yeah, Belloti’s name came up yesterday here in PDX. I think Leach would be good, but probably too great a risk considering that one of the reasons Stoops was let go was his meltdown antics on the sidelines every game.
If it is Belotti, that guy will be getting paid by Oregon and Arizona. He still gets paid around $400K per year the next 3 years as part of his “severance” package. What a crock..
I wonder if he waits for Kellys eventual dismissal and prefers to go back to Oregon though?
And watch some Leach QB go 50-65 with 500 yards against the Beavs in 2013 and win 45-35.
Stoops fired after the Beaver win! What does this say about our program? I am concerned that we are percieved as a patsy and that other teams see us as a pushover. Is that the perception. Frankly, this season has me feeling different emotions each week. Driving home on Sat. I really felt that we may actually get to a bowl game! Now I feel some real disrespect that a coach was actually fired after losing to us. Further, apparently losing to OSU has a higher consequence than losing to Sac St. Is my reasoning flawed here? Stoops had those guys in Bowl games nearly every year. Does Riley deserve to be coaching here? After all Stoops lost to the likes of Okla St., Stanford and Oregon, three teams that have shots at BCS bowls! Riley lost to Sac. St, UCLA and ASU (Wisc is good). Perhaps AZ just showed us the light!
Perception, I kind of think it became current reality once the team got rolled by Wazzu at home last year.
So are the black pants/orange tops OSU’s “Coach Killer” uniforms?
BTW, why use the “giant killer” uniforms in the football season ad campaign and not wear them at home?
More mixed marketing signals…
You’re being hypocritical. You ask how Arizona can fire Stoops when he consistently takes them to bowl games. Mike Riley also consistently takes Oregon State to bowl games and not too long ago Riley had us 1 win away from a Rose Bowl two years in a row. Last year we fell apart – which happens to the best of teams. This year is an obvious rebuilding year and Riley seems to be setting us up for another run at the Rose Bowl within the next 3 years.
Angry’s caution about complacency is well warranted. While its nice to see a win, it’s also unsatisfying to think that even if OSU pulled its head out for the last 2/3 of the season as it has in the past, and managed to get to a bowl game (e.g. vegas or other), everything would be allright again and another year would be added to Riley’s contract and the song would remain the same….
I’ve asked before and I don’t think I got any answers….How many losing seasons in a row is acceptable? More than likely there will be two for MR. If Riley has the same type of start in 2012 that Stoops had this year would it be time to part ways?
the wildcats should pick up rich rod.
Arizona thinks more of its potential than we do. They think a losing season is anathema. We dont (“we”, as in the powers that hire and fire).
And yes, I suspect that if Riley were an ahole, he would be getting the axe as well, like was alluded to above.
For me, Riley has already shown that he isnt taking this program to the next level and never should have got that long term contract. But since we are stuck with him, its good to see that he is at least trying harder. The players may yet bail out his reputation.
Btw, what are your thoughts on a new logo? I seriously think the OS logo is a fail… operating system? If they’re gonna emphasize that, maybe incorporate the animal into it like Wazzu or VCU.
What’s ironic about it to me, is that in an effort to differentiate themselves from Ohio State, Oklahoma state, Oregon State dropped the “U.” In an apparent effort to distinguish themselves from Oregon, they went away from the single “O.” BUT – the interlocking O and S is more akin to the former interlocking U and O of Oregon as a design approach.
A duck fan told me several years ago that OSU was copying UO by using a single “O” on its hats, etc. I informed her that OSU had used it first, and long before. But the lack of any cohesive identity, and the variety of poor products out there with block “O,” or “OSU,” of “OS” has allowed Oregon to seize the single “O” and be associated with it. Now if Oregon State uses the single “O” on a “giant killer” or other uniform, the uniformed think they’re copying Oregon somehow. This despite Oregon’s use of the color black….
OSU, can’t beat UO on the field, can’t beat them in marketing….I’d be curious to see what Nike and Steven Jackson have come up with for the near future.
In the meantime, I’d like to seem the using the “giant killers” without calling them that (it only feeds the underdog/low expectation mentality) with some slight modifications – narrower white stripes on helmet, shorter height on jersey numerals. Then just wear ’em and call them home uniforms.
I’d kinda like to see a helmet with OSU written out how LSU does its with classic Benny below that just to see what it looks like. There should be a black and white version at minimum. I would be fine if orange was also done. I think that look would make OSU seem cool. We could stay classic and use Benny in a way where it would still have toughness because the OSU part would be done where it looks cool. Or we could redesign a Beaver to go below the OSU if we don’t want hime smiling as much or if we are not sure we need the Benny hat since the helmet will already say OSU.
I think our black unis are getting tired. They are copied too much and our best orange/black look we rarely use because we overuse the black look. I think it is silly that we won’t use the Giant Killer’s this year most likely as well. I would like to have a road version of those as well and use them once at home and once on the road every year. If you look at NFL teams they use alternate or throwback jerseys at least a couple times a year now.
I also wouldn’t be opposed to using a sail colored pant that fits our current look at home with black or orange tops. It probably would go better than a pure white. In the Capital One Mascat challenge a player wears a black top with white pants and I think it is fine for mixing it up more and not using the all black too much.
This is the helmet I want. The five panels (2 sides, front, top, back) can all be replaced by different colors. I love the solid panel look with the numbers only. Imagine this thing with black down the middle and interchangeable orange and white side panels. Slap OSU on the Bulwark nameplate on the forehead, and call it a day.
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=lukas/110113_bulwark_football_helmets
Scroll down the page to see the historical helmets. 1973 is close to what you’re looking for. It’s not an awesome look, but it is better than the accidental paint streak that is our current lousy look.
http://www.nationalchamps.net/Helmet_Project/pac10.htm
Question for everyone: Are the Oregon schools the only schools in the Pac to have colors on their helmets other than their school colors? That’s one of the things that bugs me most about our unis. They’re not just orange, black and white. They’re orange, black, white and brown… with an ugly, angry muskrat.
I wouldn’t mind an old school version of the giant killers (only with less striping on the jerseys) and the OS on the side of the helmet. ? Now at Okie State has gone the way of the Ducks (Pickens vs. Knight!) we need a clean old school look maybe.
I am comfortably secure the Beavs will lose one of their winnable games before Stanford rolls into town. I just don’t think its this weekend against BYU.
I don’t see ASU beating Oregon at Autzen. UO has enough RBs to overcome a temporary loss of James, and will have a chip on their shoulder with his absence. Erickson’s team is still sloppy, but its not great enough to overcome its lack of discipline. In the past, Erickson’s best teams always had so much speed and physical ability they could overcome some bonehead mistakes. This isn’t that kind of squad; especially not on a Saturday night big stage, not in Autzen.
Oregon does have depth at that spot, but the drop off in telent between James and any of the backups is huge. Have you watched their running game when they take James out for rest or when they have a large lead? Barner is hesitant and often stopped behing the line of scrimmage. Thomas is fast but weighs a buck fifty. Any contact and he goes down. Missouri St was stopping the run when James was out. Thomas is better in the open field as a receiver. James is superior because of his ability to absorb contact and bounce away. He’s great at keeping his legs moving forward. Against cal, the only good runs came from James down the sideline. James up the middle went nowhere.
One strategy I haven’t seen teams besides Ohio st and Auburn use against Oregon is to always hit the QB whenever the ball is handed off and the QB fakes carrying the ball. Isn’t the defense allowed to hit the QB if they are faking that they have the ball? I say any time Thomas hands it off but looks like a ball carrier, smack him. They’ll think twice about using him as a decoy if he keeps getting hit repeatedly.
I don’t know if the Stoops and Riley comparisons are great. Stoops is 41-50 all time at AZ. Riley is 69-58 all-time. Stoops best season was 8 and 5. I mean there is not a huge gap but there is a decent sized gap. Not to mention other high profile teams have come after Riley with big money and no one has ever tried to “steal” Barney Rubble from AZ. Also I would be willing to venture that AZ has several key recruiting advantages over OSU. Not saying we should be content with consistent losing season but I think Riley has bought himself enough rope for a crummy season.
Enough rope for two crummy seasons, but how about a third? I would like Riley to at least feel a little heat from the administration just on principle. I mean, there are not many BCS programs that could go 5-15 or whatever it was and not hear a peep from the AD about the disappointing on field results. OSU football is certainly a unique and sometimes weird situation.
Hi BN… Its me again the old coach.
I guess the word is out on my appearance on Saturday. I have to admit its a little scary to return to the scene of so many bad experiences. OH Well. I guess I’ll have to face my fears. Will there be many people there?
PS: To JackBeav.. I appreciate the offer to stay with you and your mom, your string collection sounds interesting, but I have made other arrangements.
Any time. I just didn’t want to hear you talk about your own mother with another fishy Meals on Wheels reference. You may think your mom is yummy, but it really doesn’t work that way. The door is always open.
Sincerely,
your pwner
“Old ball coach”????? Trust me, Jerry…nobody ever confused you with Steve Spurrier back in the 90’s!
Good news for OSU regarding Utah – unfortunately QB Wynn is out.
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/football/ncaa/10/10/utah.qb.out.for.season.ap/index.html?sct=cf_t2_a5
Just like a defensive genius (Kyle Whittingham) to run out of quarterbacks. I think the Utes are going to pay a heavy price this year for going all in on their injury prone sophomore.
Hmmm, looks like DJ Foster is scheduled to be at Autzen this Saturday. I am sure the ESPN GameDay presence and night time game won’t influence him….
http://oregonstate.scout.com/a.z?s=182&p=8&c=1&nid=4847767
Foster would be a good fit in that offense. He’s an edge rusher with speed.
But what’s he going to do when Chipster gets canned, and Nikegon has to look for another coach while facing sanctions?
I am beginning to wonder if Oregon will get any more than a wrist slap now…the cynic in me says money/influence is going to win out. The lack of critical thought and questions from Oregon media is startling too me; there’s still such a focus on the on-field results nobody seems to mind the off field behaviors anymore.
There are far too many obvious violations committed by their staff for the NCAA to look the other way. Add to that Lyles’ story and that the material they received for their cover up had already been received by them from Lyles’ previous employer (read: exact same material with some white out), and the NCAA would be made the fool for ignoring the situation.
They will receive at least the same sanctions as USC did when the NCAA believed a convicted felon’s story over the evidence provided by a regiment of highly paid lawyers. The question should be whether or not they get killed overall by combining the football and hoops investigations. The pay for play and academic fraud in hoops go hand in hand with the street agent pay, car benefits, academic fraud and dealings with Yelverton. And that doesn’t even touch on the tattoos and pot trades for game worn apparel that the medical marijuana grower crowed about to the wrong people.
tOSU will be first. If they don’t go beyond the USC sanctions, then we can expect that to be the bar the NCAA will set for punishment. If tOSU gets hammered far beyond USC-like sanctions, then it’s gonna be fun in this town for a while.
From your mouth to God’s ears, Jack.
Oregon doesn’t have more “money” and influence than USC and Ohio St. It won’t be good for them when the verdicts is handed down. beeleedat.
I get that Ohio State, USC, Georgia Tech, (and maybe soon Auburn and others) would say “You took it to us, you can’t let them of the hook.” But Knight’s brand is throughout college football and other collegiate sports. I recognize those are business deals, and Knight’s role at Nike is not what it once was, but to me that kind of relationship threatens impartiality in the situation in which UO finds itself with recruiting and other allegations. I don’t separate Knight/UO, and I’m wondering if NCAA will? And will the NCAA really go after UO for his activities, particularly if the basketball side is as bad as alleged.
Further, look at influential “news” networks like ESPN, some of whose on-air staff have Nike contracts. ESPN didn’t seem to objective in the Texas Tech/Leach case because of the Criag James link (ESPN is trash anyway). Message control is important, and Nike/UO are great at it.
Apparently before the NC game last year, UO did a laser projection of the nike symbol above an “O” on the landscape outside the city; they’re shameless about the connection between the two.
I hope you’re right and I’m wrong.
“they’re shameless about the connection between the two.”
That’s why I call them Nikegon. It’s not meant as a slight. It is precisely what they worked very hard for years to establish. And they would be the first to tell you that it DOES affect recruiting in a positive way for them. Well, they would at least nod their heads vigorously while saying, “no, I don’t think so,” to the question.
But their brand management is flawed for the long run. While they can control the message, they can’t control the truth. ESPN announcers can luxuriate in Nike riches all they want, but they will look more stupid than they did in the Feldman issue if they just ignore the truth and let other news outlets run with the story.
And there are real reporters who have real abilities but no apparel contracts. That’s where the schism occurs. Many real reporters dislike the culture of crash course commentators taking face time based solely on celebrity. They would love to even the playing field even if it’s only a little.
Anybody have any thoughts on Nigel Burton eventually becoming a Pac-12 coach? It sounds like he’s been doing a good job turning Portland State around and he supposed to be a good recruiter. I’ve seen him on tv and heard him interviewed on the radio a few times and the guy has a lot of charisma and is young and hungry. He’s been an Oregon State assistant before and is a defensive coach, but that’s about all I know about him. Does he have Pac12 potential?
For anybody interested in learning about college programs breaking rules or documentaries, it might be worth setting your DVR to record ESPN tonight at 5:00. Morgan Spurlach, director of “Super-Size Me” has a new doc premiering tonight about compliance in college athletics. Check out the link below for a video of former NFL agent Josh Luchs visiting UCLA’s campus.
http://www.sportsbybrooks.com/ex-agent-compliance-is-a-game-not-a-practice-29871
What is ESPN’s motivation? Are they trying to habituation fans to agents and pay for play? Seems so…
Luchs is suggesting the compliance departments at each school be put on the NCAA payroll instead of on each respective school’s payroll. I don’t know what ESPN will get out of it other than being out in front of the subject. They certainly have a schism within their organization when it comes to all that is right and wrong in NCAA sports.
Another interesting story is starting to surface about all these players who have cars. Apparently the NCAA thinks they’ve been getting a little help at the pump in order to take their road trips and get their speeding tickets.
Yeah, kind of interesting how they can make these four digit traffic fines disappear and they all have personal transportation. I went to U of O for a year (worse year of my life) and out of a group of 25-30 friends and classmates exactly one girl from Montana owned a car.
I know. I had a friend at Rice whose father was a big time oil exec, and he did have a car… a ’74 Nova with rusted quarterpanels. Another friend at OSU had a father who was/is John Edwards rich from suing corporations for their malfeasance, and he drove a 610 wagon. There were some girls who had some decent hand-me-downs from their daddies, but they never drove them because the price of gas was so high… pushing $1.00 per gallon.
I saw that earlier. I already have it set.
Hi BN.. its me the old coach again. Starting to pack and head to Corvallis, can’t wait!
I hear the lead candidate for the Arizona job is Marshall Sperbeck from Sac. State. Arizona fans are insistent that the new coach must be able to beat Oregon State, Montana and Weber State. He has accomplished all three so far this year.
As you know Marshall was able to overcome his brief stay at OSU and salvage a career in coaching. A remarkable comeback story…indeed. JB
How’s Shanda? Hey Pettibitch how about a pic of you and the fam for the fellas here on the blog. It’s been a while since we have seen your face.
Hey! I pwn him! Leave my dog alone!
Besides, there’s a certain art to playing down to low, stale wit. It’s a challenge not to bring up the obvious flaws in humor when going head to vacant head.
First, pretend you’re a Duck fan. Now say something. If it makes sense, then you’re not trying hard enough. Continue to pretend until you can hear the dog whistle emanating from the Casanova. Then, and only then, will you be able to understand the empty thought of my dog.
So long as you keep it to poor toilet humor and forget logic (and your own story), you may play with my dog. but don’t let me catch you trying to make him think again.
Ten-4 Jack. I as well like to have fun with little dogs.
JackBeav, I think it’s nice that you’ve rescued PB from the dog pound… or where ever you found the stray. Curious to know, since you pwn him, what does his current diet consist of? Does he still hear well? He doesn’t seem very obedient but at least he’s loyal and prompt.
Yes, he’s loyal and non-threatening. He can see and hear very well, but he has problems with clearly interpreting what he hears and sees. That’s why he seems fixated on a single message. Note how anytime he varies that message he just screws the pooch (figuratively… he doesn’t get any since he’s been fixed).
And, of course, his favorite meal is duck a l’Orange.
To me, the irony is that Pettibone was not even close to being the worst coach during the “dark 28”, but the moniker “Pettibonehead” is pretty funny.
Here are the Pac-12 Power Rankings, post Week 6:
STAN 147.50
ORE 145.50
AZST 136.83
UTAH 128.56
WASH 127.97
USC 127.49
WAST 122.92
ARIZ 121.80
ORST 120.67
CAL 120.39
UCLA 119.78
COL 117.13
A thought that has been festering in the back of my mind in the meantime, is there’s still a possibility that this team could finish at 6-6 if the chips fall right. The key is, they can’t afford to lose any more games except Stanford and Oregon. Obviously, that’s a far cry from acceptable, but considering how the season has started, it’s not inconceivable that Riley could pull a rabbit out of a hat again. Think about it: BYU, Washington St (neutral site), @ Utah (without their QB), @ California (see last few trips to Berkeley), and Washington has to come to Reser. Still could happen. I guess I’m just a positive thinker. Wait and see what develops.
Wynn wasn’t a very good QB. Do we know anything about the new guy? I don’t. Maybe he’s better.
I think California is the easiest win out of all the games you mentioned. Their QB is horrible.
I can understand why Tedford brought Maynard to Cal. He wanted everyone else Yelverton represented as well. But why does he put him on the field? The can’t hit the broad side of a barn. And I mean that literally.
He’s hoping Maynard gets injured so he doesn’t have make that choice.
He came to Utah this year after University of Omaha Nebraska dropped their football program. He is a mobile QB but does not have very much D1 experience. He was has thrown a few INTs in his game and a half of action.
I’m not much of a Norm Chow fan. I think the Utes were doing fine with the spread. Wynn fits a Chow offense I guess. I have never been impressed with Wynn, he has a weird throwing motion. I was surprised when they benched Cain last year.
The schedule sets up pretty nicely actually. Plus we play Stanford the week before they play Oregon, meaning they could be overlooking us. If we had won that UCLA game, I think we’d still be in contention for the Pac-12 North title. Only 1 team of Oregon and Stanford can finish the season with no Pac 12 losses. Standford has the upper hand in my opinion. I think Oregon loses to Arizona State this weekend which would mean 2 losses for them. If Oregon State can surprise Stanford @ Reser, this team will suddenly have some major momentum going into the Civil War.
No, Oregon State is not playing top quality ball right now, but they are improving and the learning curve is steep. The season is long and you never know how injuries will take a toll on other teams. They’ve taken their toll on us the last few years. We’ll see how Oregon looks without James this weekend and I don’t think it will be pretty. Imagine if Luck misses any games.
So we went from a sure 0-12 to “If we had won that UCLA game, I think we’d still be in contention for the Pac-12 North title.”??
Fans are schizophrenic.
Sure, OSU has improved as the season has progressed and as young players have developed. I think the hope and euphoria stemming from that improvement is now making you and others irrational in the positive direction. We were probably overly pessimistic earlier in the year. The truth is probably somewhere in between. OSU will win a few more games but is nowhere near a title contender.
Although they have played much better the last few games and even beat someone having more problems then they do it seems…I can say they ‘could’ win several games coming up. But I don’t think I’m ready to pick them to win. Not even next week. They win next week, and improve, maybe I toy with them beating someone of nominal skill level. Been burned too many times. I’m not convinced this is one of those ‘slow starts’ on steroids. Too many other issues.
Haven’t see enough yet.
I’m not saying we deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as Oregon/Stanford right now, one of them has to lose 1 or more games. An undefeated season is very unlikely for anybody. Oregon did it last year, but think about all of the breaks that went their way.
Think back a few seasons to 2008. We lost to a bad Stanford team and were embarrassed by Penn State to start the season. Everybody was ready to jump off a bridge and the team looked horrible. Suddenly, we find a running game and the season turns around and we’re talking Pac 10 championship.
This year we have yet to find our running game, but there is potential if Agnew and Stevenson can both stay healthy. If we had beaten UCLA and were standing at 2-1 in the Pac 12 right now, I’d say yes, we do still have a shot at the Pac 12 North.
Fans my be schizophrenic, but that is because the team is schizophrenic. We’ve seen the worst and I’m looking forward rest of the season.
If ifs and buts were candy and nuts we’d all have a Merry Christmas. OSU needs to spend all available energy trying to eliminate turnovers and penalties. Maximize production and eliminate mistakes. After that everything else is gravy
I don’t get it. Isn’t your first sentence an “if”? ;)
Agree….OSU doesnt deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as ANY top 25 football team. We have only ONE win, against a team that fired their coach after that win, thats how bad we are.
Yes, there is some kind of outside possibility that the team could go on a win streak and make a MEANINGFUL season out of it, but we arent going to challenge for the title — forget that.
We need to build on the confidence and playmaking of the talent we have and hope next year’s recruits make us a better team, one actually capable of being competitive for the title.
Thats what needs to happen, the rest of the season. Be competitive.
If we had continued in the mode illustrated in the first three games, we were almost surely an 0-12 team. No one is wrong to have considered that a strong possibility. But we didnt. We are in fact improving. The fans are right to now consider that if we CONTINUE to improve, we could make waves in the conference. Win a title….with UO and Stanford looming huge? IMO, if we beat Washington, Cal, and WSU we have done VERY well in a season that looked to be a total disaster.
I cant see the OL every being good enough this season to allow us to do something like win out….aint gonna happen.
I’ve been saying for a bit that I think the squad wins 6 games. I don’t think they have a chance against Stanford and I can’t see them beating Oregon. However, BYU is a game the Beavers will win. BYU has more issues than the Beavers. I see the Beavers having a big day throwing the ball and they win. WSU is a win. Game isn’t in Pullman and the Cougars have a really bad defense. They let Kevin Prince throw all over them in the 4th quarter, that’s pretty difficult. Sean Mannion will have a huge day and the running game will be solid. The defense will be solid and the Beavers take care of business. Utah has a nightmare situation at QB. I can see the Beavers blowing the Utes out from the opening kickoff. The Beavers will force Jon Hays to throw the ball and I think they’ll get some turnovers and shut down the Utes offense completely. That would make them 4-4.
I think the Beavers hang with Stanford for maybe a half but Andrew Luck will be way too much for the Beavers secondary and Stanford wins by 17-20 pts.
Beavers then play Cal and will beat the Bears yet again. Maynard is awful, can’t even complete a pass to the flat. I think the Beavers will get a couple picks in the game solely cause he has no accuracy. The offense will play decently and they’ll win that.
Washington will be the toughest game remaining besides Oregon and Stanford. They have a really good offense and it will be a tough challenge for the Beavers secondary. However, Washington’s secondary is atrocious. Ranked 117th in the country, giving up 323 yards a game. They make the Beavers secondary look like LSU or Alabama. I think we will see a lot of improvement from Sean, he’ll hit some passes that he’s been missing on and will absolutely shred that secondary. I think he’ll have 350-400 yards passing if they choose to let him throw a lot. I think because it’s at home it will give the Beavers an advantage there and the secondary makes enough plays for the Beavers to beat the Huskies. That win would make the Beavers bowl eligible.
I think Oregon then beats them and the Beavers end the regular season at 6-6. I do not think that’s too much ask right now. I think they then get a berth in the Holiday Bowl or Las Vegas Bowl. I think they would play Texas in the Holiday Bowl, TCU in the Las Vegas Bowl.
Should say they would actually make the Sun Bowl, not the Holiday Bowl. They would likely play Florida State or Virginia Tech in the Sun Bowl.
I like your thinking 21, but I just think Riley will lose a game he should win somewhere in that patch of games.. 6-6 is a reasonable expectation, but what I don’t like is that the media will crown MR a savior once again when the team should have been 8-4.
Imagine Michigan without Denard Robinson…could be wrong, but I think they damn near lose out if he goes down…
Michigan would be bad offensively without Denard. He IS their offense. He’s the main reason I think Michigan has an undefeated regular season. He’s the biggest game changer in the college game. He makes them a top 10-ish squad. He’s gotten much better throwing and is the fastest QB in the nation. I would be terrified if the Beavers played Michigan right now.
I would counter the Oregon-ASU argument with this. If there was any place the Ducks could afford to take a hit, it’s at RB. Right now, Oregon has the best stockpile of RBs in the entire country, bar none, and I don’t like saying that, but I am also a realist. I think most of you will agree with that if you look at it objectively. The only team that can outclass the Ducks right now is the crew down on The Farm.
I have to give it to Kelly, he rarely runs Thomas anymore. I guess they learned from the QB injury carousel of the past. I couldn’t even tell you who their back up is. Would they be in big trouble if Thomas went down?
Thomas isn’t anything all that special.
I don’t think Kelly is responsible for Thomas not running. Those are read plays and I think Thomas doesn’t like getting hit. When he does keep it, it is usually successful. I was laughing all night as I watched the Cal game. James and Barner were getting popped in the backfield quite a bit because Thomas didn’t want any part of taking the hits when the OL crumbled.
I still think that is smart on Thomas’ part if he wants to stay healthy. He doesn’t seem to have any problem lighting up P-12 defenses in the passing game despite atrocious mechanics. Now SEC defenses seem to be a problem for him!
I’ll also point out that the Stanford game is in a perfect “sandwich” mode for the Beavers, as Stanford has a road game with USC the week before, and the showdown with Oregon the week after. I doubt the Cardinal will let down, but if there’s the slightest possibility of it… that would be the ideal situation for one.
Does anyone know why we don’t wear the orange tops as our primary home uni? It’s a much better uni than the black tops. I don’t like the white pants at all, except with the black tops. I would also like to see us wearing nothing but black pants. Or maybe some orange pants with the white or black tops?
But the worst look is the black on black, with white on white coming in a close second.
Yeah the orange tops with black pants are the best combination the school has. You can just tell good things are going to happen when they wear that combo. Totally agree that their standard away and home combos SUCK. More orange. I can even see an orange on orange.
Uniform combinations have never really been something I’ve ever been concerned with, as long as they’re not wearing those sportsbra tops from a few years ago.
I would like the helmets to look like fierce pumpkins with a sillouhette of Dee Andros in black on the side.
And “Dee Andros” in cursive font that relates to nothing else in the uniform design…
The current uniforms could be improved a bit by just eliminating the outlines on the numerals in any of the color combinations. The “giant killer” uniforms are simplified in this manner.
The other thing that OSU needs to do to improve them, and it sounds simple, but define one orange (hue, value, chroma), develop a swatch, and hold product suppliers to an empirical standard. There’s so many variations on orange – the uniform orange tops seem to have quite a bit of red in them for example. Fan merchandise is all over the place on this.
I’m not wild about any of OSU’s current uniform combinations. I was a big fan of last season’s Giant Killer Pro Combat uniform. I would love to see something like that in the future.
Actually, I really liked OK St. uniforms that it wore against Texas A&M.
I believe angry has asked for the cartoon Beaver logo to be retired. I’m starting to agree here. Maybe when they replace the field next season this will go away.
I liked the uniform that was characterized as looking like wearing a bra….didnt see it that way at all. We looked cool in all black in that old Fiesta Bowl…. Dont like the “Giant Killer” unis…very disrespectful to that great team… We should be undefeated before we can wear them.
OL Cory English has us in his top 2 and will visit this weekend.
Despite what Rivals says, he has an offer from Washington and Washington State as well.
http://rivals.yahoo.com/oregonstate/football/recruiting/player-Cory-English-124692
is he being recruited as a DT or O-line?
I *think* O-line, but with all of the prospects we have (4 in so far and 2-3 more that we have a good shot with) I think there’ll be some movement before all is said and done.
Daniel Tosh wore BYU gear tonight for his show. Wonder if that has been good luck or bad luck this season for the teams he’s worn?
I’ll bite.
Who?
Tosh.0 on comedy central, he really is pretty funny.
And he looks like Page Hamilton.
I’m not a big Helmet fan. They kinda put me to sleep.
Helmet is one of my biggest influences, but you definitely hafta dig the heavy repetitive riff. Their great songs are epic (unsung, wilma’s rainbow, milquetoast) but their filler songs are marginal. They never did have a Master of Puppets/Colour and the Shape type of album that was great all the way through.
Page is from medford, and he is super cool. I shot the shit with him briefly when they played the WOW hall a couple years ago. Gotta give it up for the crew cut/shorts/tshirt/vans anti-rockstar look in the early 90s too. The look and sound was such a breath of fresh air in the gunsnroses and jackyll heyday.
Tosh.0, tv show comedian pretty funny!!!
Tosh.0*
Hmmm… gotta respect someone who counts the days to his early retirement for all to see.
http://danieltosh.com/
But why does he wear college swag not from Central Florida? Does he do the Cosby thing with college sweatshirts?
That reminds me of something:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-De2xm16l80
http://www.kicksonfire.com/2011/10/11/air-jordan-9-oregon-state-teaser/?utm_medium=twitter&utm_source=twitterfeed
Now that’s the O they should be using as the main logo. Screw the OS or OSU.
I like the OS. I also like just “STATE” in orange. Those Jordans are awesome, wonder if our bball team will be sporting those? I really miss having a hard hittiing saftey, it’s been a few years since we had someone of that caliber. I felt like for years we could count on that. We need that fire we used to have. We need the motor of Wynn on all 11 players on D.
“We need the motor of Wynn on all 11 players on D.”
Doubtful that any college team has ever fielded such a D. Wynn’s motor is rare.
But the good news is that Wynn revs up his teammates to play harder and faster. Wynn’s energy and attitude inspire the players around him. This is at least one reason why OSU’s defense is playing better these days….
Hi Beaver Nation, Its me again the old (former) coach. Finishing up my packing and heading to the bus depot. Thanks to the BASF for the generous round trip tickets! I realize that it represents a significant percentage of their annual giving.
The bus stops in Boise so I will be making a guest appearance at the Boise State practice. It looks like they could use some offensive help. I didn’t actually speak with Coach Peterson but as long as I stay behind a chain link fence they say I’m welcome. Wish me luck!
I will be bringing a surprise to Corvallis. Remember the bronze beaver? I’ve been lugging the damn thing around for the last fifteen years. I’ll take it out to mid-field when I present the game ball. The crowd should go wild! Remember how well it worked for my great teams?
As a special treat I will be at the Bob’s Hamburgers on 9th St, 7:00 Friday night. Stop by and say hello… I have a ton of glory days memorabilia available at very reasonable prices. Autographs start at $1.00.
This will be my last post until Sunday night. I don’t have one of those fancy email phones.
See you all at Parker… opps… Reser on Saturday! JB
PS: JackBeav I noticed that you posted at least 20 times in the last 24 hours. You might want to call 1-800-639-7462. They work miracles.
There’s my dog.
Everyone… Shhhhhh!
Let’s see if he notices we’re here.
And Bob’s! There’s a shot from the past. Only there was one on 5th and one on Kings, not 9th. Everyone knows this except my little dog? You’d be closer if you were talking about Eugene. There was a Bob’s on 6th and one on 11th. Nice try, but a major fail.
I could go for a Big Brute right about now. I found the recipe for Bob’s sauce long ago, and I think it’s the only recipe I have that uses Miracle Whip.
You can’t get Fulton Meats at any stores, but they do supply all the Burgervilles, McMenamins and Bon Appetits out there, along with a couple other chains like Ruth’s Chris and McCormack & Schmick. And you can buy Country Natural Beef at all the Whole Foods and New Seasons markets out there… as well as places like Capellas here in Eugene. But if I’m headed to South Town to get meats, I’m just going to Long’s.
Unavailable: I am enroute to Corvallis to receive my long overdue apology from Beaver Nation. Let’s hope for a new car or a dream vacation. Will have a trip update on 10-16. Be patient!
Automated response: Please do not reply
Good ol Bob’s barfburgers. When my Dad was in college in the 60s they used to go to Bob’s before they’d go out drinking so they’d have something to puke up.
Bob’s, that is a blast from the past. At one point Rick Barry was a part owner. I remember he did a free throw shooting promotion at Valley River Center for Bob’s. There used to be one in Lancaster Mall in Salem, curiously they never made it up to Portland.
Nice comments from Mannion on the Portland Tribune site:
“Quarterback Sean Mannion seems to have a sixth sense about avoiding pass rushers and preventing the sack.
“It’s something you can always work on,” Mannion said. “But if you can just move a couple of feet, you can extend the play a half-second longer. And that can make the difference.”
• Mannion smiled when asked if the Beavers have “arrived” after the Arizona victory.
“You can’t think like that,” the redshirt freshman said. “You can’t stop because you get one win. That’s not who we want to be. You have to keep working to get a bunch more. We can’t let up at all. We have to keep working even harder. That’s our focus.”
from CBSsportsline:
Thomas firing leads to first recruit loss
DB Leo Thomas, from Sam Houston High (San Antonio) decommitted after the firing of coach Mike Thomas, he told the Sporting News. Thomas is a three-star recruit by Rivals.com, Scout.com and 247sports.com. Many of Arizona’s 16 other committed recruits have said they will take a wait-and-see approach.
Might be a good time to poach some talent?
we need more DB’s
Yes, we do. But I think Thomas is a S, not a CB. Still, we could use talent.
Unfortunately, guys who committed to Mike Stoops seem more likely to be looking for either A) nice weather or B) a firebrand of a head coach. We have neither.
OL – Zach Hemmila would be a nice one to get as well. We were at least on his radar for a while, but he is an Arizona kid, so maybe he just wants to stay close to home.
We also had an offer out to WR Julian Brooks, though it seems like we’re pretty stocked up at WR at this point.
C) They want a coach that will stick around through their college career. Oregon State will have Riley in place through 2019 at least.
I disagree. Stoops was on the hot-seat when these kids committed…so it would seem as if the coach’s job security wasn’t really a factor.
I’m just saying if they’re already leaving, prior to seeing who Arizona picks up as Stoops successor, stability might be one of the factors they’re looking for.
From the outside world’s perspective, Riley is on a bit of a hotseat as well.
He damn well should be…!
But obviously for this year, he isn’t on the hotseat.
