  1. That is one lucky punt. How many times do you see a ball bounce like that? Beavers backed up now. They need to get a long drive going here.

    • The Beavers are much more effective running stretch plays then just plain runs up the middle cause they can’t block straight ahead on dives. In that regard Langsdorf’s hands are tied play calling wise.

  2. Well I’ll be damned. I’ll take that back. The re-run clarified things. There was not much blocking by the OL but the play was set up so that 2 Beavs hit Mannion in the behind and pushed him forward.

  3. Wow Mannion looks so good! There were multiple plays on that drive where he showed why he’s better than Katz. He did an excellent job of being patient and checking down to his second and third options. Hopefully our defense can keep it up too.

  4. hehehehe On the last wildcat punt I thought it could have been blocked but the rusher didn’t try to block it. This time they went for the block.

  5. Couple bad throws.. but still really happy with the protections and overall QB play so far. Also, the D is playing really well…

  6. Didn’t like the play calling. They were having success running the ball and just just went away from it. Arizona hasn’t really stopped it, gotta keep going with it.

  7. Everyone is seeing why I’ve said Arizona is a bad team but the Beavers are making their own breaks. Crichton worked his ass off to get to Foles, genius of a fake punt call and Mannion is making some great throws. I felt very confident about this game and they aren’t disappointing. They just need to play a good second half and finish strong, then they’ll have a lot of confidence moving forward.

  8. No excuse for a loss like this. Arizona has no business being in this game. Typical Mike Riley game. Team starts out playing well and then they proceed to give it back

  9. I’m not convinced the Beavs lose. Arizona has looked like crap most of this game, and the Beavs have played better all game. Just need a couple stops to seal it.

  10. I can see why the Beavers would go for it and I could see why they’d kick the field goal. Personally I’d go for it. It’s at the 2 and if you don’t get it the Wildcats are pinned inside the 5 yard life and if you get the touchdown you give basically the knockout punch.

  11. I’ll take the somewhat ugly win against a team that that underachieved almost worse than us this year. Lance Mitchell for player of the game.
Sadly, this gives Riley a chance smile and feel good about his coaching staff. I can live with that only because he didnt ruin another Saturday for me in October.

  12. This is a Mike Riley win. Jump out big early, play not to lose for a while afterwards, then once it gets tight make the plays to hang on.

  13. There were some good calls early; the fake punt, a few good fly sweeps, the draw plays that were working well.

HOWEVER, Langsdorf ALWAYS plays conservatively in the 2nd half, and we always choke these leads away because of it. Look at the number of fly sweeps and trick plays after halftime, it’s not close, vs the number of conservative, junk runs with Jenkins. Those plays don’t win games.

  14. Love Mannion, he is going to be so good assuming we can get the line play together. Good day for the defense too, holding Arizona to 27 points is impressive.

  15. Bad 3rd quarter, but overall they played a good game. Better team won.

I also agree that the beaverbiceps.com banner and that chainsaw are an embarrassment.

    • I don’t mind the chainsaw but the beaverbiceps thing is probably the worst PR move I’ve ever seen. You’re telling me of all the people in our athletic department nobody could come up with something better than that?

    • I like the chainsaw more so than the stupid ASU third down thing. They do a modified tomahawk chop with the fingers in their trident thing and then they do the chop 3 times and then they start yelling….the chainsaw actaully gets people on their feet at Reser and gets people to cheer.

  16. I have a question from the experts. There was an AZ throw to the 1 yard line that was reviewed and confirmed on the one instead of a TD. But the receiver didn’t hold onto the ball. It looked a lot like a TD we had in the last sunbowl, that was ruled an incomplete pass because it came out when he hit the ground. To me it looked like an incomplete pass, just like the one in sunbowl

    • Different circumstance. He had full possession and reached for the goal line and ball came out after he was already down. Ground can’t cause a fumble.

      • Should say also that the process of the catch was much different. Bucknet caught it on the move and ran toward the end zone, process was finished once he took two steps forward. If he dove for the ball and once he fell to the turf it squirted out they would say it was incomplete but it was nothing like that.

  17. I felt Mannion played really well. His INT’s weren’t too bad. First one he had a guy in his face unblocked and he was a little off target, most likely didn’t see the defender. The second one he appeared to throw just barely late and it was a pick. Wasn’t really bad throw, just didn’t have nearly as good of timing has he would have liked. Overall I felt he was much better.

  18. Just back from Reser.

I thought Mannion played well, but still lots of room to improve. Mannion missed several wide open receivers. He also threw a number of passes that were catchable but off-target. He misread some coverages, too. But, on the positive side, I love how Mannion keeps his poise under pressure, how he is able to slide around in the pocket to buy time, and how he is able to find and deliver the ball to secondary and tertiary receivers (all weakpoints for Ryan Katz).

Surprised to see Dylan Wynn subbing in to play nose tackle on goal line defense. But watching Wynn on plays near the goal line, he was very effective. What Wynn gives away in size, he makes up for in grit and fight and determination (areas in which he already leads the Beavers…)

  19. Hi BN; Your friend the old coach.
Well the Benton County miracle has created a problem. I am now receiving pressure from Arizona to rescue them. Don’t worry my first allegiance is OSU and those of you that made my first experience so mutually memorable.
The only problem would be if somehow Riley manages to win more games. The Arizona win moves them up from crappy to lousy so there is still hope. I was there after the big win over Wyoming in 92.
Don’t forget our mantra; Remember the 2 win glory years! I can help! Call me. JB

  20. Henry did not look good in the first half. Wynn and Chrichton both outplayed him. U guys notice are d-line looks very undersized.

    • Dylan Wynn is crazy-undersized to play nose-tackle in a goal-line defense. But he more than held his own. He’s a very special player….

  21. I felt this team could win 4 straight games and after watching WSU and Utah today I feel very confident they’ll be 4-4 with Stanford coming to town. I think 6 wins is definitely possible. Beavers will continue to improve, especially Mannion. Don’t think they have a prayer vs Stanford to be honest but I think they’ll be 6-5 heading into the Civil War. That would be hard to believe after the horrible start to the season.

    • I would love for you to be right, but I don’t see it. I still haven’t seen enough to say that I’m sold on our team’s ability to finish games. All of these games are coin flips in my mind.

  22. good win for a young team with no experience of winning. a few notes for the after hours crowd

    1. if this was an experienced team expected to win the late game collapse would be inexcusable (although poor play in a game you win is only inexcusable if you proceeded to go on to lose a later game with similar poor play). for this team, young and untested with a lead, against a quality passer and most of a half to play, some kind of comeback is to be expected (and remember 6 of those points came on a pick 6). in the end, while a loss would have been miserable, these players are better off for having to have gone on an important 4th quarter drive to score and held on an important 4th quarter goal line stand. everybody on this football team now has a better understanding of what it takes to win a pac-12 football game. (on the other hand, if mark banker really did go into a kind of prevent defense at the beginning of the 4th quarter even i may join in the calls for his head)

    2. this is not Mannion’s coming of age game. he made some great plays, in particular finding Halahoni on the last TD pass and making the pass so only he could catch it. He had time for most of the game, however, and was late on a lot of balls, particularly in the first half. against a better pass rush that means sacks and a better secondary, picks and incompletions. at this point i don’t see the type of raw talent that Anderson, Moore, and Katz had, nor the natural accuracy that Canfield had. I see him as a cross between Anderson and Moevau (sp?). but he has one great advantage going for him – 4 years a starter. i believe that coming of age game will happen, though maybe not till next year, and i have that expectation that he will learn enough football to eventually prove me wrong.

    3. Riley has always been a less conservative play caller/game manager than his reputation admits. For years i’ve been listening to expressions of mock surprise when he fake punts or goes on 4th down, or pulls out some trick play. granted there are some high profile decisions, like not going for it on 4th down the second time we had it inside the 5 in last years Civil War Game, but he has more gunslinger in him than people allow, until a play fails and everyone yells that he should just run the ball. which brings me to all the complaining about the conservative play calling in the 4th quarter today (and really, was it that conservative?). I recall over the last 3 years that whenever we had the ball with the lead if we passed and it was incomplete the boos all came out (we are winning in this scenario remember) along with calls to just run the ball! not a bad option with quizz, yet i can remember myriad times when we went 3 and out handing off to quizz 3 times in a row with a lead. complaints like these always run in circles around themselves, and its for reasons like this that someone like me ends up posting on the angrybeaver

  23. Mannion will have a coming of age game THIS year, not next. He’ll put it together and hit the throws he should have today. Next year, the game will look much slower for him. All of this depends on the line keeping him upright.

This made me pretty happy: http://cliffkirkpatrick.mvourtown.com/2011/10/08/arizona-postgame-5/

Watch the videos, and the players are saying this is not enough, they need to keep improving. I like that.

The d-line is going to be fun to watch the next 3 years. Combined with the speed at LB, we’re going to be reminded of earlier OSU defenses. A holiday bowl would be nice 2 years from now….

    • Holiday Bowl in two years? In two years I think they can do much better than a Holiday Bowl. Next season I think they can make a Holiday Bowl. Next year, as long as they keep improving I could see them win 9 games or so and be the second best team in the North, not too far behind the Ducks. Stanford loses Luck, Cal is mediocre, UW will held back by Sark’s bad coaching, Cougars will be the Cougars. Will be a UO-OSU battle. Next year’s southern division doesn’t figure to be a whole lot better as well.

Key will be how well the inexperienced O-Line will play. I think they may struggle as a group a little bit early on with the likes of Wisconsin, but they’ll get better and better. Josh Andrews I expect to be the leader. He’ll play well from the start, just the rest of the guys will need to pick it up.

Next year I am hoping the Beavers can finally get off to a quick start. They’ll have 3 of 4 starters in secondary back, 2 of three linebackers back, both defensive ends, RB back, QB back, receiving core aside from James back. If the the young guys on the O-Line can get into a decent groove the middle of the year I think the Beavers could get into a bowl as good as the Alamo Bowl. They do have Oregon @ home so you never know.

Riley will need to finally get his shit together in the offseason so the team doesn’t have a slow start. It happens every year, I’m hoping the Beavers can finally get off to a solid start. If they get a real soft early Pac-12 schedule that could help. I suppose me asking for a decent start is asking too much of Riley. Just don’t want the Beavers blowing an opportunity.

      • As a great man once said, “you can hope in one hand and shit in the other, see which one fills up first.”
Why in the world do you think Riley would magically change, after all these years, and get the team off to a fast start? Why? What do you see?
Of course I would love the scenario you propose, but let’s be realistic.

      • One thing to consider for the future is that the NCAA investigation might well bring UO back to just being “good”, much as it did to USC. Thus, if we can improve we could well be very competitive with them again, as soon as next year.

Also, if the coaches dont work HARD on getting linemen for next year, then write them off. I think they know they have screwed up badly, recently, in letting the O Line get this bad.

With a mature Mannion starting next year, I would suppose the players themselves will get it going early in the season. Surely, no more losses to a Sac State?

    • You’re fooling yourself if you believe the grand illusion that Foles looks like Shaw. Or maybe you’re snowblind or suffering from metal poisoning… or you just have too much time on your hands. Even in the best of times Foles looked like a man in the wilderness, not a renegade who would sing for the day. But it’s because Arizona is living on borrowed time. Nothing ever goes as planned for them.

And how about that halftime show. Fanfare for the common man? Don’t let it end. It’s not the first time lonely people have pretended to be superstars by saying, “I’m gonna make you feel it,” in a Beavs halftime show. Haven’t we been here before?

  24. The halftime show was the best I’ve ever seen at any football game, ever.
Those that tell you it was lame are clueless kids with no exposure to culture.
“Fanfare for the common man” performed ala Elmer Fudd and Bugs Bunny is epic American culture. You tell me that you think singing “kill the wabbit” is lame and you have lost all credibility.

  25. Putting this year’s squad in a Riley context, they’re really only a game off of expectations. With Riley’s inability to get his team’s going early, I think we’d have to expect this team to be 2-3 at this point, with one of the expected wins over Sac State.

I’m not saying that’s ok, just that in the context of this coaching staff.

Mannion has 4 straight games of 200+ yards passing. I think the INT issues are going to clear up, and if the line doesn’t get him killed, he could be the first Riley QB to perform at a high level in his second true season of game time. I think the light will go on for him this season, and next year he’ll come out of the gate being able to perform at the level of what we normally wouldn’t see from a Riley QB until they’re Junior or Senior season.

I’m going to go with my gut and say that OSU is going to give Stanford the play-out-of-our-heads treatment they usually reserve for USC every other year, and defeat stanford at Reser.

    • In context yes, but if Riley is going to be held accountable they should be 3-2. They have equal if not better talent than UCLA (and played them at home). If they manage to finish 5-7 or 4-8, like you said “it’s not ok”. 7-5 or 6-6 was the fair expectation for the talent level.

      • The appalling loss to Sac State in the season opener is on the coaches. OSU never should have lost to a middling FCS team.

The UCLA loss is mostly on the coaches, too (esp. Banker, for failing to stop UCLA’s one-dimensional offense from running 40+ dive plays for 5 yards a pop).

Those two losses probably killed the Beavers’ chances of going to a bowl game this year. Too bad….

Still, there is reason to be excited about the Beavers’ future (with players like Sean Mannion, Scott Crichton, Dylan Wynn, and Brandin Cooks learning on the job this year, and with a strong recruiting class coming in next year).

If OSU continues to improve each week — and if our key players stay healthy — the Beavers may also have a puncher’s chance in this year’s season-ending Civil War game at Autzen. As each week goes by, that possibility will likely seem increasingly less “insane”.

        • This season isn’t lost yet. I’m looking at how the season could play out for some of the other teams in the Pac12.

I’m picturing Washington losing to Standford and USC on the road. Then, they’ll come to Corvallis to face a hot Beaver team that’s on a crazy winning streak. Washington loses @ Reser and wins vs WSU to finish the Pac 12 with a 6-3 record.

UCLA will lose to Arizona next week for UA’s first much needed win. UCLA will also lose to ASU, CAL, USC and possibly Utah. I see them finishing with a 4-5 or 3-6 Pac12 record.

CAL only wins 2 more games this season. Maynard is not a quality QB and they will have trouble scoring. The finish the Pac12 at 2-7.

Stanford will come into Corvallis riding high at with 6-0 Pac12 record. Huge if, but IF Oregon State can pull a win out of their ass that day, and Oregon can beat Stanford the next week, Stanford will end the Pac12 schedule with 7-2 record.

This is where it gets really interesting: Oregon is very beatable without The Michael James. I see them losing to ASU next week. I also see Oregon losing to UW in a few weeks. The game is at Husky stadium, and Washington may have enough pieces this year on offense to keep up with Oregon in the scoring column, especially if James is still out for the 4th straight week. Oregon will be looking forward to Standford too so that UW game is really looking like a trap game if there ever was one. James should be back for the Stanford game and at that point, I’m actually hoping Oregon can overcome Stanford. I see Oregon going into the Civil War with a 6-2 Pac 12 record.

Oregon State’s schedule actually sets up nicely for a strong finish. The next 3 opponents present very winnable games, based on how the opponents have been playing.
          BYU=W
WSU=W in Seattle (Beav fans really need to go to this game, if for no other reason than to see a game in the Seahawks stadium)
UTAH=W (hopefully Jordan Wynn is still out)
STAN=W (trap game for Stanford, they’re looking ahead to the Oregon game and underestimate the Beavs @ Reser.
          CAL=W
          UW=W
Suddenly, Oregon State has built a very nice win streak and have been growing as a team all season. The pieces are falling into place and they are heading into the Civil War with a 6-2 Pac 12 record. Oregon State has a puncher’s chance to beat Oregon @ Autzen against a wounded Duck’s team.

If ASU can beat Oregon next week, which I think is very possible since James will most likely be out, I see ASU winning out the rest of the Pac 12 games, except the Pac 12 Championship game.

If Oregon State can pull off the upset in Autzen, we’ll be seeing a Pac 12 championship game @ Tempe with Oregon State at 7-2 and ASU at 9-0. Oregon State has proven they can hang with ASU in Tempe. Osweiler faces pressure all night from Chrighton and Wynn and Oregon State comes away Pac 12 champs. Rose Bowl vs Wisconsin for the 2nd of 3 games in 1 year vs the Badgers. Beavers lose a close one to Wisconsin as Russell Wilson runs for the game winner.

How’s that for some predictions through Orange tinted glasses?
Ok, I don’t seriously think it will all fall out that way, but the potential is there. That loss to UCLA is really gonna hurt when all is said and done this season. I think Oregon State finishes top 2 or 3 in the Pac 12 North regardless.

  26. Just rewatched yesterday’s game. Great to see OSU finally win a game in the trenches. Being realistic, that’s in large part because AZ was weak up front (e.g., lost all 5 o-line starters in off-season). But it’s also because our guys are playing better (especially the young guys in our front seven on defense). Win the trenches, and the rest of the game gets a lot easier. Nice to be able to take advantage of that for a change….

Obviously the OSU special teams also played a big part in yesterday’s victory. Hekker made some clutch kicks (as well as the 4th down pass to Lance Mitchell). Romaine did a good job on kickoffs as well as on field goals (although Romaine came uncomfortably close to missing a couple of extra points). Coverage was good all day (with Dylan Wynn making a great hustle play to recover that squib kick near the end of the first half). And no glaring special team errors the whole game (another nice change…)

On the down side, Langsdorf continues to be predictable and overly cautious, especially when OSU has a lead. For example, if an OSU tailback makes a good gain, it’s 90% certain that he gets the ball again on the next play. The play choices near the end — giving Jordan Jenkins the ball over and over for little or no gain — were classic Langsdorf. Ugh.

More importantly, Arizona’s weakness up front disguised continuing problems with our o-line. AZ didn’t get a sack yesterday, but AZ still generated a fair amount of pressure on Mannion. It will be interesting to see how our o-line performs against BYU (both in pass protection and with the running game). Hopefully, Josh Andrews will return — we need him.

One other point. Despite everything else, if Juron Criner hadn’t gotten injured in the first quarter, AZ might well have won yesterday’s game. Poyer had his hands full all game with Dan Buckner. If Criner had stayed in the game, Rashaad Reynolds would have had to cover either Criner or Buckner. RR is getting better each game (RR is already better than Brandon Hardin ever was, IMO). But Foles and Criner would surely have hooked up for some big plays. The Beavs have to continue to improve in the secondary if we are going to have a chance against the better teams to come…..

    • Spot on about the secondary, particularly our luck with injuring opposing players (Locker, Best, Riley, Criner, etc…).

My favorite player has to be Dylan Wynn, his hustle is outstanding. Everytime I see a big play it is a virtual guarentee that he was involved somehow, that kid is all world in my book.

      • Rewatching the game last night, Dylan Wynn was even better than I remembered in those goal line stands. For most of those plays, Wynn played nose tackle, and lined up — helmet-on-helmet — against AZ’s 300 pound junior center. Despite giving away at least 50 pounds, Wynn dominated that match-up. One one play, he drove AZ’s center into the backfield. On another play, he stood the center straight up. Amazing to watch. Wynn is special.

Feti Unga is playing well at MLB. But I wonder whether Wynn’s natural and best position might be MLB. Wynn’s speed, ferocity, and motor remind me of Ray Nitschke and Dick Butkus (dating myself) and also of Ray Lewis. I suspect that Dylan Wynn may end up playing MLB in the NFL some day. Just a thought….

        • I think Wynn fits most in a 3-4 type system. He seems to have a nose for the ball that is outstanding which would make him a great OLB that can just go find the play. On the other hand, his tackling ability would make him a great ILB. Either way, Wynn’s is about as pure of a football player as I have seen on the defense in a long time. Whatever he does, he will be outstanding at it because he is a natural football player and athlete.

Regarding the play at NT which was outstanding, was it just me or was Wynn at RE when he made that key goalline tackle? I am pretty sure he used a “rip move” to move across two defenders and into the hole.

          • I think Wynn would fit perfectly as an OLB in a 3-4 scheme. Have him stand up and find a gap to rush the QB and it allows him to stick his nose in there on running plays. I think you have to have him on the field as much as possible. Also need Crichton on the field as much as possible. Those two make big plays, definitely a real bright future with those two.

          • Yes, on the particular play you mention, Wynn was at RE and moved across two defenders to stuff the runner. Great play by DW…..

    • Not a Langsdorf supporter, but He (or Riley) seemed to open the playbook a bit in the last two weeks. Maybe they feel the team is now better able to handle more variety.

As to the point late in the game where (with Stevenson out) Jenkins was run over and over; I believe that was meant to run time. Sure, a sweep or two would have made some sense but the risk of losing yardage has to be factored in.

All in all an educational and motivating game for this young team. How they won is more significant to me than the W.

      • OSU got the ball w/ less than 3:00 to go inside their own 5. UA had one time out. Jenkins was given the ball to gain as many yards as possible and run the clock. No incompletions, no turnovers. A first down would’ve been nice but not all that important.

Stoops really shot himself in the foot by not getting at least a FG on 4th down at the end. He needed two scores anyway, might as well go with a higher percentage.

  27. I like the fact that they “held court” at home and took advantage of another struggling program, but as Silverstream points out the margin between success and failure is very slim with this young team. The Beavs also were able to recover all three of their fumbles which you can’t count on every game.
BYU looks very beatable, they have benched Jake Heaps for now, so the Beavs will face running QB Riley Nelson, they need to contain him and smack him hard. He makes plays in the passing game by scrambling. BYU will field a better defense than Arizona also. If Beav improvement continues on this arc, they should win next week

    • I think the Beavers win by two touchdowns. BYU wasn’t really all that impressive against a bad San Jose St team at home. Nelson had three touchdowns passes but he struggled throwing at times. Some of the throws Nelson had success with he won’t have success with against an improving Beavers secondary. He threw some really bad passes, had two INT’s. Beavers I think will force some turnovers. He’s a better runner than thrower. I don’t think he will have a big day running with the improved speed on the Beavers defense. He’ll have a a decent run once in a while but I don’t see any real big gains. I think the Beavers for the most part shutdown the BYU running game and makes them fairly one dimensional.

SJSU had success throwing the ball on BYU, I think Mannion will play even better next week and will hit some throws he missed on against UA and will have a big day. If Agnew were to come back I think they’d have some success on the ground but I don’t think he’ll be back until the WSU game.

I think the Beavers beat BYU 34-20.

  28. WOW! Huge props for the folks who kept their outlook up, and could see this as a win, going in. For me, I can now get on board, and think we are more than a blown play waiting to happen. Arizona didnt lay down but came back strong in the second half, and we had to respond, AND DID. WAY TO GO, BEAVERS!!

This should build on itself. Players suddenly see what it takes to win, and expect more from each other. Ride that high, Beavers, and get no 2 next week!!

    Man, this feels good!!

  29. I have always been happy that they replaced Katz with Mannion for the very reason we saw yesterday…. Mannion check primary, secondary, and went to the third option more then a couple times. The checking down ability is a huge improvement over Katz.

Plus Mannion has balls of steal standing in the pocket like he does knowing the hits are coming.

I’m not concerned with the 2 interceptions yesterday. The first one Mannion had a guy right in his face who nailed him as he threw and the second one was a tipped throw.

My only concern with Mannion is his throwing accuracy. He needs to throw into the numbers better but I’m hoping that improves as he gets out of diapers.

    • Most of Mannion’s misses are overthrows (passes that are too high to catch). Noticed that in Fall camp, and it remains true (e.g., Mannion’s first interception yesterday; Mannion’s two overthrows where Wheaton was open for TD catches). As Mannion matures and gains confidence, we can expect fewer overthrows. It’s a common and fixable problem among young QBs.

  30. JackBeav, or Angry, or anyone have any idea who the JUCO D-linemen that were visiting this past weekend were? I can’t seem to find their names. Reported by Rivals that a handful were visiting for the AZ game.

  31. Was anyone paying attention to the times the ball did or may have hit the ground yesterday? I haven’t looked at the replay yet, but it looked like Ward dropped the ball when he hit the ground. Anyone have a definitive look at it. One I did look at time and again was UA’s first TD catch. It looked to me like the ball hit the ground next to his hip when he fell then bounced over his shoulder (and may have hit the ground again) before he held it up. The announcers were clueless, one even saying time and again that he “tucked it away” or “tucked it in” while the replays showed he had very little control. Usually when the producer keeps playing the same play from four different angles, s/he’s looking at the same thing I’m looking at.

Beavs in the NFL scored some TD’s today. Barnett and Browner with big pick-sixes this week.

  32. Sorry, but I believe Tyner will go UO. He never says anything about OSU, only “I wish I could be in Autzen right now” and “Oregon always has the best uniforms”.

      • Regardless, OSU needs to secure a quality RB this year. I doubt Agnew will every be able to get through an entire season, and while Woods and Ward may yet develop, there’s nothing wrong with having competition and depth a quality RB would provide.

Can’t count on Tyner – he’s a junior who’s going to be swimming in offers. I think they should continue to recruit him hard, and tell him he’d be a big piece of the puzzle to along with Mannion, a fleet of receivers, and an improving offensive line.

    • Go back a few months during fall camp, Tyner had Oregon State wallpaper on his twitter account and his bio said “will be a Beaver” or something to that effect. He wrote about not liking the Ducks because they were the type of team that had everything handed to them.

Since then he has been slightly enamored with the Ducks, and that’s what you’re seeing now.

I’ve even seen recent posts hyping USC.

Don’t worry, there’s more than a full year for him to change his mind 7 or 8 times.

      • tyners not realistic for the beavers, that kid can go anywhere he wants. i know riley says he backs off guys once they verbally commit, but im kind of hoping that its possible riley can steal steven long from portland state.

    • From an article by Cliff in this morning’s G-T:

“Freshman defensive end Dylan Wynn recovered a fumble at the end of the first half. He needs one more to tie the single-season school record of four with Osia Lewis (1985), Mitch Meeuwsen (2001) and Alan Darlin (2006).”

    • I really liked Wynn’s hustle on that squib kick. It would have been easy for anyone else to think “the half’s almost over, no need, probably won’t recover it anyway..” etc. He put on a burst to take that ball.

Before they’re done, Wynn and Chricton will be feared – probably as soon as mid-season next year.

  33. From the Portland Tribune: “• Though Sean Mannion twice overthrew Markus Wheaton on what would have been touchdown passes, the redshirt freshman still had “a very good day” against Arizona, Riley says.

“He made some big plays,” Riley says. “On both touchdown passes (to Joe Halahuni), Sean showed a lot of poise. He made some good throws down the field, some good angle throws to (Jordan) Bishop. If we can protect him and give him some time, he’s pretty good.””

I think Sean is going to start hitting those passes in the next few weeks. With Wheaton and Rodgers serving as deep threats, OSU will start taking advantage of those opportunities.

Anybody know about the quality of these kids:

“• Four prospects were in Corvallis this weekend on official visits, three from Mt. SAC College in Walnut, Calif. – offensive linemen Stan Hasiak and Visesio Salt and defensive end Koliniasi Leota “

    • The Tribune always seems to have some of the best articles, I guess Egger’s man-crush on Riley gives him some access the others don’t have. You just can’t expect him to beat Riley up as a coach.

Mannion’s last TD throw to Tank was NFL quality. The receiver was smothered, but Mannion was able to throw to the only area possible and understood the angle and Tank’s size advantage. Kind of like a perfect entry pass to the low post!

  34. Hi BN; Your friend the old coach here. I have a bold suggestion. Lets shock the football world and announce me as the new head coach effective immediately! Lets capture the spirit of the unexpected victory over Arizona and storm our way into a BCS Bowl.

Think big! I can be there before practice this afternoon. Call me!

    • Jerry, I think you need to head over to Atlanta and kiss the foot (or ass if you prefer) of Paul Johnson, who unlike you actually found a way to make the option successful and win some D-1 level games.

        • Did Pettibone ever coach again after OSU? I think he runs a recruiting service now. His Beavers won more games with defense than with that flexbone and I give Rocky Long credit for the D’s.

          • If you look at Pettibone’s success at Northern Illinois, his option QBs were big and fast. Once he got to OSU, the only option QBs he successfully recruited were little skinny guys from Texas.

  35. Big question of the week is what to do with Enger, assuming that Andrews comes back. Do you slide Enger over to RG and bench Ellis? Do you move him to RT and bench Kelly? Do you move him to LT and bench Remmers? Or do you do the unthinkable and take Enger out of the lineup. So many options.

      • No… I am saying Enger can play Tackle or Guard… but that we have not had much problem with Johnson and Center is not a position worth messing with sometimes. I am not a huge Johnson fan but he really hasn’t stood out in a bad way so I think it is worth keeping him in.

        • Ummm… Johnson has been bad. He’s slow. He can’t move anyone out of the way by himself. I watched him pull to the left on first and goal, and he tried running over (and just fell) a guy already knocked to the ground by the WR instead of leading through the obvious hole off Tank’s flank. If Stevenson would have waited for Johnson to actually get to the hole and hit his assignment, we would all be old old men before the play was done. And that 4th and 1 against UCLA was a Johnson line call gone wrong. As a C, he’s supposed to block the rush in support of his OG’s. But he’s sometimes nowhere to be found when defenders are released to his level.

And there was one snap against UA that was just weird. What was all about? I agree that messing with the position can have drawbacks. But I think putting Johnson there in the first place is enough of a mess to warrant a good lineman taking his place. Now that Kelly looks like he’s getting a little more comfortable with each game, Ellis is doing the same. I don’t know what it is with Ellis, but he’s only good when he has someone good next to him. And I’m not going to bother about Remmers.

          • I was speaking of Johnson mostly about his snaps which have been good for the most part. I am not a big Remmer’s fan either but keep in mind he is drawing the toughest assignment almost every game.

    • It’s probably a weird game for the oddsmakers unless they think OSU has improved and will continue to improve. I’ve seen almost every BYU game on TV and am not that impressed, but their defensive plays hard, so a Beaver miscue here and there and who knows. I think it boils down to stopping the run and keeping turnovers at a minimum like so many games.

        • Anemic pass rush, decent pass protection. Though I guess different now with a running QB. I think they maybe have 4 or 5 sacks on the season and have given up about the same. I would think Mannion will have a good day. I don’t know the numbers, but it looks like BYU’s back seven hit hard and have caused some fumbles this year. I don’t like Ward’s ball security.

          • Thanks for the BYU scouting info. Agreed that Mannion should have a good day, assuming a weak BYU pass rush.

As for Ward’s ball security, it appears that Mike Riley agrees. Ward was picking up good yardage early against AZ, but MR yanked Ward quickly after that fumble, and left him on the bench. I’m guessing that Ward will be focusing a LOT on ball security in practice this week….

          • You kind of have to throw out the Utah game because they lost six fumbles. Otherwise, they have been in every game and the games have been low scoring defensive struggles for the most part.. This is not the 2009 BYU team, the Beavs can handle this team.

          • Yeah, I’m not sure the average Beav fan appreciates how often college RB’s fumble and how lucky we were to watch Jacquizz for three years and whatever alien mojo he was working with! He never fumbled the ball (I don’t count Canfield’s sloppy backwards pass!)
I like how Riley is not going to put up with that nonsense from Ward. Even when he scored the TD against ASU it was damn near a fumble. I wonder if McCants fumbled a lot in practice and that is why he is persona non grata now?

  36. Interesting to skim the AZ blogs today. AZ fans criticizing Stoops and his staff for unimaginative play calling. Fans calling for Stoops to be fired. Fans calling for AZ to offer the head coaching job to Chris Petersen or Mike Leach.

On the subject of Mike Leach, the following posting by an AZ fan was also of interest:

“Have you ever listend to Mike Leach on his daily radio program on Fox radio? If anyone has – they would never want this guy representing our university. He is a negative, sour, defensive, and antagonistic guy – who is bitter at the world. Ever wonder why no other football program the last two years hasn’t hired him? He is a malcontent….”

    • I catch his radio show with Jack Arute on sateillite when I am driving around for my job, I kind of find him refreshing, he is definitely no BS. He is also a little weird, kind of a idiot savant genius.

It was funny the other day, he was going through all of his peers who came up the ranks with him (and had the same philosphies) like Hal Mumme and Guy Morris and he was proud of them, but I was thinking….they all flunked out at the d-1 level and now they are at d-3 backwaters plying their pass happy trade. Leach is the only one who had any success.

He’s also not shy about going after Craig James when they let a caller through who wants to talk about his firing. I think he is still well loved in Lubbock.

    • “Have you ever listend to Mike Leach on his daily radio program on Fox radio? If anyone has – they would never want this guy representing our university. He is a negative, sour, defensive, and antagonistic guy – who is bitter at the world.”

Yes, because the Zonies wouldn’t want to give up the calm and respected demeanor of Mike Stoops for someone who was negative and/or antagonistic.

Why in the world would Peterson even consider moving from Boise to a trailer park in the desert? That experiment has already been tried and failed.
