That Might Have Been the Worst Half of D1 Football I Ever Watched

76

And I grew up watching Rutgers. And I watched Fordham earlier today.

I'm absolutely embarrassed to (a) be a Beaver fan and (b) to have picked the Beavers to win the game.

We apply FMO (fooled me once) to Beaver Byte's spam. I think we should start applying it to Riley & Crew. I mean, I thought Utah would be in this game and could win it, but not by 4 scores (and counting). I'm taking the stance I took last year with Craig Robinson–every game is a loss until they prove otherwise.

If OSU looked well-coached, well-prepared, and the players progressed, I'd have no problem with losing. But this is absolutely awful, a complete embarrassment to every alum. Someone in the other thread made this comment: We are playing the exact way Riley portrayed we would to the media all week.

I used to talk about that last season. It's spot on. As soon as the ante is upped, Riley assumes the scared, loser mentality.

  1. The battle in the trenches has been all the difference again. Can’t stop Utahs ball carrier and can’t protect our own QB. Utah is working us on both sides of the ball.

    • Yup. OSU got dominated in the trenches so badly that Utah’s lack of a D1 QB didn’t matter. Hard to believe, and harder to stomach…that was awful.

  2. Do you guys notice how the offense is just walking back to the huddle? I hate that shit…they are down by 24 points and every second counts. Do the Beavs even have a no huddle package?

  3. So beavs have scored 6 and utah has scored 26 (24 for themselves and 2 for the Beavs) and Riley is all smiles on the sidelines?

  4. Wittingham is great. Game on the line, he attacks the Beavers’ horrible O-line with two blitzes. It’s just refreshing to see a logical coach. Can we hire this guy? Oh wait, the kidney and lifetime contract…

    • Whittingham is a great coach, but even he’s taking some heat in SLC for not having a solid back up plan for the QB situation, especially since Wynn is proving to be less than durable.

  5. Poyer having to fair catch almost every punt tonight has not helped. Guy has had no protection back there and utahs gunners are always right on him when he catches the ball.

    • I was commenting early that they don’t seem to have any return game anymore. Kick offs are all the same, Poyer cuts once up field and either falls down or gets tackled between the 20 and 25 yard line.

  6. I’m disgraced by our showing. Vote with your checkbook this next year. When OSU representatives call for donations, refuse until the product on the field improves. As a donor to OSU for over 35 years I’m gonna take a pause this next year, and tell the rep to forward my refusal to BDC.

    • Congrats on becoming empowered. Did you see what Bank of America did after people canceled their accounts due to the $5 ATM fees? They backtracked and got nervous. What about Netflix? They reverted their DVD plan. It’s all about the dollar. That’s your vote. As long as fans donate, Bob D and Riley will do the same ol’…

    • Not fair to punish other OSU athletes because Riley and company can’t function. Fans can still donate with explicit instructions as to where the funds should go; track, basketball facility, etc. Clearly state where the money is to be used and explain why it shouldn’t go to football. Bank of America and Netflix are commercial entities and are not charged with (hopefully) enlightening a generation.

      • I feel bad for James R. seeing how far his team has fallen and how he somehow has to make himself look good for the NFL scouts on this debacle of a team.

Beaver U just got kicked in the nuts. Wait, we don’t have any balls. My mistake.

  7. Beavs with another blush worthy bullet on their resume. Utah’s first pac-12 win.

My guess is that Colorado doesn’t win a game this year, and next year they pick off the Beavs for their first Pac-12 win…

    • Angry, you know we always joke that the Beavs always get teams on the upswing. I wonder if the Buffs recruiting classes are any good or maybe they will just get a juco RB and a D2 QB and they will be just fine.

  8. This game was a pure disgrace to Beaver Nation. The offense was horrible, just horrible. Mannion looked terrible mostly because he was asked to do EVERYTHING. Wheaton, IMO hasn’t proven to me to be an upper echelon receiver. Top notch recievers make the catches that he routinely drops (see James Rogers before injury). Rogers was the only bright spot in tonights game and he comes out after every play that he’s involved in. Why?
Everytime the Beavs get punched in the face we drop into the fetal position…WTF? This team can’t play from behind.
Oh, and finally WHY CAN’T WE MAKE IN GAME ADJUSTMENTS ON DEFENSE, BANKER? Are our players too stupid or are you? Maybe both.

    • “…Rogers was the only bright spot in tonights game and he comes out after every play that he’s involved in. Why?…”

My wag is he’s probably playing when he really shouldn’t be. In other words he hasn’t healed up yet.

      • That’s what I was thinking too. He’s still our best receiver and he’s not 100%. He’s a competitor and “wants” the win more than the rest. I have a feeling that Mannion’s the same way but he can’t do it alone. I also don’t think we have found our future RB yet. Agnew gets fumblitis at the worse times.

  9. I went to my first Ducks game today (Beaver fan here) and the atmosphere is 100x better than an OSU game (don’t worry I’m not converting). But, the fans weren’t actually the stereotyped I hear about.. anyways.. my main point is seeing how the players can actually play with some motivation and get into the game with the crowd, from what I just watched OSU has just embarrassed themselves and where is that confidence and urgency to win? Jesus.

  10. I hope BDC cans Riley’s ass this offseason. We aren’t headed anywhere with him. Get Leach or someone with some attitude. Riley put the panties on all week with the media and wore em’ tonight as well. Absolutely disgraceful for all of Beaver Nation. Disgusting performance.

  11. Damn, the Quacks have to be salivating right now. Stanford is behind and Clemson is getting rolled by Ga.Tech. It’s going to be insult on injury if they get back into the NC conversation again. They just need OSU to get beat by Oklahoma and then who knows.

  12. Everyone in the stadium knew that Utah would hand the ball to White on almost every play in the first half. That’s what Utah did. And for some reason OSU couldn’t stop this completely predictable, one-dimensional Utah offense. That’s on Banker, 100%. And it’s grounds for termination (as if grounds for termination didn’t already exist….)

    • They way I look at it either the players aren’t Pac-12 caliber players on D or Banker and the rest of the defensive coaches aren’t making adjustments that gives them the best chance to be successful. Fundamentals are lacking. All this circles back to coaches responsibility. TIme for fresh blood in the booth.

BTW, why is Banker on the field instead of in the booth? He can’t see shit from the field and as a result doesn’t make in game adjustments.

In this economy I would really like something to look forward to in football season. The Beavs and Seahawks are killing me. Thanks…

      • It is all coaching. Riley and his staff are just horrible. They didn’t recruit the O-Line and look what has happened there. Didn’t recruit DT and now they have nobody decent available to play there at the moment. Recruiting in past years has doomed this year along with some horrible coaching. Banker needs to go and Langsdorf is absolutely clueless. Riley never seems to have his guys motivated and there just is no sense of urgency. Far too often his teams have games where they just don’t even show up. Unacceptable.

  13. Yep….this apathy by the coach is amazing. No sense of urgency at 24- zip….

Thats a man with a long term contract for a school he knows is too poor to buy him out, and who has lost any real competitive urge. Pitiful. I feel for the players.

Cant wait for this to be the only win Utah gets this year……from us good ol doormat Beavers…

      • Arizona jumping all over UW in Seattle. They could beat Utah with the way they’re playing. Imagine that, Stoops is fired and suddenly they have a pulse.

  14. This coaching staff talks about the need for the players to grow within the season (the tired “find their identity diatribe), but the staff never talks about THEIR need to improve season to season in terms of performing better early in the season, or even in making in-game adjustments; both demonstrable, empirical problems.

Each year, the team shows what is capable of – e.g. a victory over highly ranked USC, CAL, etc. – and each year the staff demonstrates their inability to motivate players, game plan, and make within-game adjustments, so that the players perform at a high level consistently. The problem is compounded by the staff’s inability to admit their wrong on certain players (Pankey, Robinson, etc.).

All they do is blame it on the players. Its getting old. I hope to god the talent on this team doesn’t adopt a loser mentality, the commits don’t de-committ, and that Riley is forced to make changes at the coordinator positions this off season.

    Embarrassing.

  15. Stanford beats USC 56-48 in 3 Overtimes. Absolutely incredible game. Andrew Luck was a monster at the end of the game. I’m really terrified of next Saturday. USC is pretty good though. Really impressed with them.

  16. Utah coach Wittingham post game quote “I cant believe they didn’t stuff the box. They used the same defensive sets they’ve used all year”

Neither can we coach…..neither can we……

    • You know it’s bad when the opposing coach is basically saying the Beavers coaching staff has no idea what they’re doing. Man………..

      • I kind of like that Whittingham throws out that subtle dig at the Beav coaching staff. It validates some of the criticism here. Obviously, Kyle had an excellent defensive plan in place and bewildered the O-line and Mannion with multiple looks. Being new to the P-12, Kyle could give two shits about the “Riley persona” and calls it how he sees it.

    • You beat me to it.

I was just going to post the same stunning Wittingham after-game quote. Coaches don’t usually say stuff like this in post-game press conferences. But Banker’s failure to stuff the box against Utah today was such a head-scratcher — was so clearly and so blatantly incompetent — that Wittingham couldn’t resist.

Let’s hope that BDC and MR remember this at season’s end, when the time comes to consider the changes that obviously need to be made…

      • Whittingham has been taking some heat in the SLC press as to whether he underestimated the P-12 competition and what the hell he was doing with his QB recruiting to be in their current situation, so he’s probably relishing the chance to deflect a little of the negative attention and point out a P-12 team that is underachieving worse than the Utes.

    • Nice to see Buker put that quote in his Oregonlive article title too. Maybe this is a start to chipping away at our geriatric and enabling fanbase and their never ending/blind support of Riley.

It’s not a sin to hold your coach accountable, not matter how much you think he’s done for the program!!!

  17. As others have noted, I too was bothered when seeing Riley yukking it up on the sidelines while his team is getting embarrassed. A coach needs to keep a level head during good times & bad, but how can you have such a heartfelt, deep, lasting smile when your utter failure is manifesting itself right before your eyes?
Imagine you’re a player who just busted his ass on any particular play during this beatdown, and as you struggle to un-pile yourself and get to your feet again, you look to the sideline and see your leader having a good long chuckle with one of his assistants. How do you not quit on the spot?

Back in my high school basketball playing days we got our ass chewed on the bus ride home after a loss when the coach heard us screwing around and joking, laughing, etc. That coach was the best leader I’d ever seen, even to this day because of that kind of attitude. He went on to become the highest paid hs coach in Oregon, won state titles, and now coaches at the collegiate level.

I’m just a basf donor now, but I want our coach to be someone that I would follow. A leader. Riley is an outstanding human being, but I want a leader. It’s time for change people.

  18. Here’s something funny…my brother texted me before the game asking how I thought it would go.

My exact text back to him:

“I’m guessing they’ll stack the box and stuff the run to make them throw. Shitty QB will hafta chuck it up and the dbacks should feast. Especially if the offense can score early and make them play catchup.”

Funny that I could see it and Whittingham could see it but the guys getting paid 5 figures a year can’t figure this shit out til the second half?

I agree with Banker needing to be in the booth so he can see how bad his defense sucks shit.
