Comments, updates, etc for the Utah game.
I keep thinking these games don't matter, and the season is just about the young guys growing. But mathematically, the Beavs can still win the North. For that reason, I'm excited to see if they can string together two wins and begin playing their best ball as they head into that part of the schedule. Just a thought.
Regarding today's game, my greatest concern is the Beavs come out flat. Weird time slot, on the road, Utah looking for their first conference win…eh. I've got a worse feeling about this game today than I did yesterday. Beavs should win it, though.

Dylan Wynn made the big play on that drive. Forced Utah into 3rd and 6 and they just get a FG. If the Beavers can put Utah in third and long situations, the defense will have plenty of success.
If the first series was any indication, Utah doesn’t seem like they’ll have too much trouble running the ball. Pretty big holes on most of those plays.

That was Wheaton’s fault again. That is exactly where that pass has to be thrown, but Wheaton can’t adjust mid-air.

He isn’t a good passer. That was maybe his 2nd good throw. But, eventually a QB will make a halfway decent throw. Wouldn’t even be a big deal if not for horrible play calling , Wheaton dropping a touchdown and Romaine missing a FG. Everything has gone wrong.

Good run game, Utah has not impressed with pass defense. Horrible play calling makes most defenses look really good. Don’t give the Utes too much credit. Beavers didn’t show up.
Again, I think we were lulled into belief by good performances against two teams with really bad defenses or else the Beavs just can’t beat teams with 25 year olds.

Poyer really isn’t that good of a returner. He had the punt return vs UCLA for a score but that was the exception. He’s not a good returner. They just don’t have a guy for that with James not having the same speed. Brandin Cooks could be an option though.
I’m not an expert, but it seems like he just does the same thing on every return…make one cut and go down around the 25 yard line.

There is not enough beer in the world for me to keep watching this snuff. I have never seen a team look so disorganized in every facet of the game. There is literally nothing positive about this game. What I find most disconcerting is that the game was up for grabs in the first quarter, all the Beavs needed to do was make some plays (Wheaton not dropping that TD) instead, Utah started making the plays and there was no counter punch by the Beavs.
They could come out fired up in the second half but I don’t expect anything other than a repeat of the first half. So embarrassing.

What is annoying is, I haven’t seen any counters and there has been what, two stretch plays? I get they wanna throw the ball but if you aren’t running it throwing will be difficult.

Hey, we TRIED running up the middle 3 times against a superior front line. That means we cannot run the ball, at all, anywhere, and now its time to throw the ball 3 yards 63 times, and hope that Wheaton remembers which endzone he’s running to.
I agree they’re doing nothing to spread the defense. Ran the fly sweep once. They can bring the house on every play cuz there’s no outside threat.

Where are the linebackers on defense? The only ones making a tackle on DL and Safeties. The DL is doing and OK job with their line, but the LB’s are no where to be found! Horrible.
Riley lost this game on Monday, he had everybody believing we were going to get mauled, and it came to be.

Time to rip the coaching staff a new asshole this week. They deserve plenty of flack for playing as dreadful as they are. Penalties, long 3rd downs leading to constant stalled drives and picks and inability to stop the run when we know Utah doesn’t want to pass that much. Couldn’t have been an uglier 1st half for the Beavs. If teh 2nd half is almost as bad I am prepared to end the Riley II era midseason if necessary. This is worse than pathetic to let a poor Utah team dominate us like this.
Imo Utah isn’t that bad of a team and to me it seems obvious they have a better coaching staff when it comes to recruiting, play calling, etc.

Not on Mannion, it’s on Langsdorf and Riley. If you run a lot of slants they will stop blitzing as much. Never see the Beavers run slants. Plus, Utah is getting two guys free in the backfield with a 4 man rush.
You see so many huge plays in college football with the three step drop and quick slant. Apparently, that does not fit with a “pro-style” offense.
For Riley and Langsdorf it sure don’t make sense. But to every other coach running the pro-style offense has slants being ran. So frustrating to see the coaching staff not run a simple slant route. Against man defense it is highly successful. If teams blitz you and you run a slant, there’s a good chance you can house it.

Tonight just showed we can not win against a tough defense. They annihilated our o-line, and we could not move the ball. It would have been nice to see some hustle from the players when there was a chance at a comeback, but I should not expect it from this crew. I am always hoping for it, but its just not OSU style. I still think this team will be great next year, but this coaching staff definitively needs an attitude adjustment. Just a bit of hustle would make a big difference.. or at least throwing in some no huddle.. there is very little reason to really huddle these days.
Well multiple dropped passes, a game-killing fumble…it’s hard to rally from those. We left 14 points on the field between Agnew’s fumble and Wheaton’s drop.
