I only view this site through the prism of a laptop and firefox, and for me everything works great.
However, 30% of this site's visitors use Safari (Ipad/Iphone/Mac) and Droid. So, my question to you guys: is the site okay on the mobile platforms, or do I need an updated theme? Keep in mind I don't want to redo the site; it's a lot of work, and I like the minimal feel right now. So if it's little ticky-tack stuff then cowboy up and deal with it. ;) If there are any major issues let me know here.
The only issue with viewing on my droid is having to scroll down when there are 100+ posts, serious pain. Otherwise it’s good for me.
Okay. I’m not sure how to fix that. I could make the most recent comments at the top, but that would be awkward for everyone else. It would be akin to reading right to left.
Another option is to put up a “recent comments” link…they look ugly, but they’d take you to the most recent comment.
I know someone asked for a button that goes straight to the bottom..I don’t have the knowledge to make that, though, so we could either stick with what we have or try one of the options I mentioned.
Adding a link to the bottom is pretty easy using anchors:
http://www.hypergurl.com/anchors.html
Awesome. I added it.
Jumping to the bottom works on Firefox for Mac, but not on Safari. Doesn’t bother me too much, but figured you were looking for feedback.
That new button is awesome. Those 500+ posts last civil war week were such a pain. Thanks!
I can deal with it. It borders on the ticky-tack side.
Scrolling can take a bit longer on some devices like Ipads, but overall everything is solid and the social function is great. As long as comments don’t go well past 200+ it stays plenty manageable for almost all devices.
Before Riley signs his new DB coach I hope we take a close look at what the priorities are. OSU can’t afford to lose out on future recruiting battles because we are okay with stale and tired in Corvallis.

I wonder if those devices themselves have an “app” that allows them to fast scroll?? That could be a solution. Surely this isn’t the only site on the internet with many comments, so I wonder how users and the manufacturers deal with that problem…
e.g. My laptop keyboard has a “page down” button…it goes right to the bottom with one click. There’s nothing like that on the mobile hardware itself?
The ideal solution, and one you should be able to do in Javascript is a scrollbar function that is self adapting. As the area covered gets larger it increases its scroll range per movement. Would be a fairly standard equation. I am reading some Javascript material in the next few days. I’ll let you know if I can pass on anything more concrete. The other thing is if WordPress will allow it and it might not.
Prepare to be underwhelmed.
this might help the apple Safari browser users.

For Android users, try that little 4-way arrow thing on your screen. It makes scrolling to the bottom of the screen a snap.

Still no pope? No smoke from the VFC chimney?
Mobile users, check out the “Jump to Bottom” button now under “Comments”. It works for me in Firefox, but test it out on your devices.
Hopefully this will help you out.
I get a scrolling bar, but it works much better and faster. IPhone
Try moving your name=”bottom” anchor down further in the source. If possible, within the Footer div.
I moved it as far down as possible in the WP “comment” page. Any better?
WP is all PHP, so getting HTML to behave correctly can be tricky.
The “Jump” link has to be in the comment page, and I don’t think you can link that to a footer page. i.e. The “bottom” has to be in the comment page. So, since it’s as far down as possible, I think it’s the best I can do. Is it worth having? Any other suggestions?
I could add br tags to lower things if that’ll help.
When WordPress renders the page it uses both the comment and footer pieces. Try putting the bottom anchor in footer.php, within the footer div. It doesn’t have to be in your comment.php file.
Moved it to the footer within the Div tags. Any better?
Yup, works for me now in Chrome, IE, FF and Safari.
Sweet. Thanks for the tip, dood.
If people can retest on mobile devices and give feedback…
Works on the iPad, don’t have an Android device with me.
Works like a charm on my Android – HTC Inspire. Thanks!
Mike Riley thinks the site is just fine! He has something called a PC tower on the floor of his office and a 17 inch CRT monitor on his desk and can read this blog just fine.
He does have the IT guy come in once an hour to refresh his screen for him.
When asked why he did not get himself a Droid, he said that he never has been into Star Wars.
Nice.
According to Analytics, one user here has a Unix system. No doubt it’s Riley.
I was seriously thinking about going UNIX. I have Ubuntu set up on an old Toshiba laptop that was slower than gum on a cold day on Windows. And it is REALLY pretty. I have several peripherals connected, but I have no wireless card for UNIX. Since I have all my personal stuff on that platform, I figured it would be impure of me to taint it with networking. So now I use this $200 laptop I bought three years ago for cruising the web. It comes with no bells and whistles. It also has not crashed on me once… something I couldn’t say for more expensive units I’ve had in the past.
It’s supremely easy to download UNIX material onto a disk and upload it to my (now) desktop. It’s almost as easy to just read up on glitches and fix them on your own.
I’ve tried three times to switch to Linux and constantly have driver compatibility issues or software compatibility issues. I give up, though I love it in theory. I still tinker with it on a virtual machine.
Sorry… Linux. I had mega problems trying to get it to work on the same unit when I tried formatting 75% Linux with Windows accessibility. I wanted to cruise the net, but I figured the unit was responsible. But when I scrubbed Windows and did a full Ubuntu upload it worked like a dream.
I just can’t cruise the net on that machine anymore.
And now i don’t want to. It’s so uncluttered that I fell in love with it offline. I gotta say, it’s a little harder finding games for the kids. But I don’t have to worry about them stumbling onto weird stuff on their own.
It (and a third hard drive crash on another unit) prompted me to try going el cheapo for the networking unit. I don’t play online games, so video capability is all I need to survive.
Anyone using CPM? If so, that is MR.
*Staring at the CPM*

The Unix user would be me :) I visit regularly on systems running Ubuntu, Fedora, and CentOS.

Do you get over Beaver loses by writing phat C-shell scripts?
On the Android browser, all that seems to happen after clicking the “jump to bottom” link is the page is reformatted to have that link lined up with the bottom of the screen, which really is just a jump to the top. But it doesn’t really matter because the 4 way arrow button I spoke about earlier allows you to scroll to the bottom of a 500 post blog entry faster than you can say “Scroll to the bottom,” so it’s really a non-issue.
Refresh the page and try it again. Some browsers were positioning the target anchor differently.
the button works now for my android browser
Works great with Google Chrome.
i use the dolphin HD browser in droid and just touch V to go to bottom, no scrolling
Android user should also be able to just hold down the space bar key and after a second or 2 it will automatically shift down to the bottom of the page.
Much better, thanks
What have you nerds done to my BN brethern? GO AWAY!!. I want them to come back and talk about important “stuff” like football and basketball. JB
Ya! Jump to bottom works for me now too on my Incredible.
I don’t seem to have the 4 way arrow others are talking about.
Now can you add a button to automatically respond with the comment, “You’re an asshole”?
Been needing that one a lot lately.
The site works fine in all of my browsers, which are numerous in quantity as indicated above. One thing I’d suggest, however, is including the Chat link in the main write-up of each game thread. It’s easy to overlook in the nav-bar, and leads to it not being used much.
Craig, what do you know about computers and programming?
I mean, what are you, a computer science PhD student visitor?
The Chat function is basically for games indirectly related or if I want to share something with registered users. I don’t like to use it for our games because these posts create a better archive than the chat.
e.g of chat use: If Stanford/Oregon are playing, and the Beavs have a chance at the #1 slot, we’d gather in chat to talk during that game. Nothing like that has happened of late, which is why it hasn’t been used. So on that note, it’ll probably next be used during the Pac-12 Tournament.
I kind of like the comment log so that I can follow along afterwards if I am busy while the game is on.
Angry:
Just wanted you to know that I love the site layout, the simplicity makes it great for work and phone use. It is plain and thusly easy to load on my phone. Additionally, the plain look of the website doesn’t stand out in a work environment. Please don’t change it, broke my heart when Grantland changed their website (and I would bet more changes are coming).
Thanks, agree I like the simplicity. I don’t want to change it, but sometimes WordPress themes don’t work (as WP rolls out updates). I fear this theme might start to lag behind as smartphones do more, which is why I had to check in and make sure it’s all working still. As long as the theme can keep up, I won’t change it.
I spent months hacking/moding the code, too, and I don’t want to go through that again. For those interested, Google “Rising Sun WordPress” to see the theme backbone. It’s sooo bad.
Agree about Rising Sun, nice work. You didn’t like the orange from it though? I don’t mind the red(ish) color that you have now but just curious.
It’s probably user error, but when I click on my Angry Beavs bookmark on my Android, I immediately go to a post from back in October 2011 (Arizona thread). However, when I “refresh” the link, it doesn’t update to the most recent post. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.
You probably bookmarked that old link rather than the main page. Delete the current bookmark. Go to the main page and add it as your new bookmark.
Ah, thank you, Angry.

Details Sources tell us former Colts asst Rod Perry will get this one “@AFoster13: @footballscoop Any word on candidates for Oregon State DBs job?”
FootballScoop:
Oregon State: Sources tell us to look for Mike Riley to name former Indianapolis Colts assistant Rod Perry his new defensive backs coach.
I’ve been away. Have you guys already been talking about this guy? What is the scoop on him?
Found this:
Posted 19 January 2012 – 03:35 PM
Just found out that today the team cut the assistant secondary coach Rod Perry.
The question we should really start asking isnt “whos going to be fired” its “whos NOT going to be fired” around the team.
Not sure I’m happy about getting a guy that just got fired.
PS – Angry, love the simple text blog thing you got going here. Thanks for the bottom link.
Other than the fact that he’s old and has never recruited college players? No.
Oh good. Sounds like he’ll fit right in. PS – Riley really sucks!
Somehow I am able to get this site on my Timex Sinclair computer I purchased in 1981.

Rod Perry’s job title with the Colts: assistant secondary coach
It figures.
Now to see how much OSU is going to be paying him. Will his pay exceed $120K?
his position was Special assistant to the Defense.
I have no idea what that means.
I so wish we had a young up and coming coach coming in. I’d even be happy with Riley being there a couple more years if he had a young one on staff that could take over one day.
In order to take my mind off things I think I’ll pick a favorite Pac-12 south team. I’ve hated USC for the longest time but I got to tell you I’m considering them because of their passion, and willingness to make changes to win.
USC played harder than the Beavs the past two years, and they had nothing to play for. Kiffin is a horrible coach, but I give him and the players all the credit in the world for that.
Yea Kiffin is an idiot. But everything else about the program is only something to be jealous of, strong fan base, strong strong alumni base, and administration that wants to win baby win. And if Kiffin doesn’t win he will be out faster then La Michael James. No lifetime contracts there.
“HappyBeaver” says:
Perry is extremely experienced [old]
He has never had difficulty recruiting [no track record recruiting]
Colts secondary used poor technique, there was no problem with scheme or coaching [was never very good]
Adds to coaching staff synergy [Another guy from Riley’s good ol’ boy network]
Is a stabilizing influence for young, impressionable men [Seems to have a passive, laid back personality]
