I've been talking what Comcast and this is what I've gathered:
1 National Network channel. Broadcast in standard definition
6 regional channels available in HD.
Regional channels will be free with the digital starter package. National channel is part of the sports entertainment package ($9.99 per month).
OSU broadcasts out of Portland, OU broadcasts out of Eugene. Both share the same channel. What I want to know is this: what happens if the Beavs and Ducks both kickoff at the same time? We know the Oregon Regional network will show the Ducks, so does that mean the Beavs aren't on TV that week?
Can anyone confirm what Comcast told me? They are idiots so…

Speaking of scheduling, anyone else getting fed up with the Beav’s ridiculous OOC schedules?
There’s no reason the Beavs should be playing Wisconsin and BYU out of schedule. Part of modern football philosophy is generating a strategic schedule. One that (a) guarantees two wins OOC (b) one game vs a mid-tier opponent (c) brings the team to fertile recruiting areas (d) schedule games vs a historic team in decline–Oregon is fantastic at this, (e) gradually up the competition over the first three games, etc. I realize an AD can’t generate the perfect schedule every year, but the Beavs have been making life difficult for themselves. Difficult schedules aren’t rewarded.
Ducks first three games:
Sep. 1 Arkansas St.
Sep. 8 Fresno State
Sep. 15 Tennessee Tech
Beavs first three games:
Sep. 1 Nicholls St.
Sep. 8 Wisconsin
Sep. 22 @ UCLA
And of course BYU later in the year.
I believe originally they had an easier opponent than BYU (PSU maybe? or MN?) and got out of that game to play BYU. I don’t get it.
Ducks are going to score close to 200 points in the first three games and generate buzz from the get go…Beavs will likely be 1-2. Doesn’t make sense.
I guess I could look at the Beavs/Ducks schedules and see if there’s any overlap…
Hopefully they factor having only one regional network into future scheduling
Looks like a lot of TBA still on both schedules.
Sept 8 looks like a potential problem, though.
Beavs vs Wisconsin 1pm. Ducks vs Fresno 3:30. That can overlap. Unless that Beav game is on ESPN. Anyone know?
Game is on FX. Not the worst but pretty telling of the lack of respect when a matchup like this isn’t on ESPN or ESPN2.
Nov 24 is definitely an overlap, but I guarantee they’ll broadcast the game at Reser. :)
Here is what I know:
This topic is irrelevant to me as a Direct TV subscriber. Which sucks.
Can’t you get out of that subscription and switch over? What are you going to do, not watch games all year?
Can’t get out without penalty. Haven’t been with them for 2 years yet.
I can get out but my options are dish network and charter cable. Fucked all around and not impressed at this point.
I thought as a Direct TV subscriber you could put your service on “HOLD” or suspend it temporarily?
Here, I just found this page: http://support.directv.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2430/~/suspending-your-directv-service
Maybe you should tell them you’re going on vacation during football season and pick up one of the other options on a month to month basis through January, then switch back? Unless you want basketball season too, you could do it through mid March. Just an idea and it shouldn’t cost you anything extra, although setting up new service is a bit of a hassle.
Thanks, my other option is Charter, which is not really an option. I think I will be fine for most of football. Basketball is what I’m really excited about the Network.

What bets do you like here for making money Angry?
I think I would bet against Cal at 20:1 and against OSU at 60:1 to win the conference. I feel confident OSU won’t do any better than a Sun Bowl this year and will be mildly surpised if they make a Vegas Bowl or better.
I’d bet against Stanford. They will not win more than 5 games.
I also think Oregon is the favorite.
Washington’s defense is going to hold them back.
OSU scheduling —
I agree with angry’s anger. But I think a lot of Beaver scheduling was to get whatever games they could that would make money. Thus we get used as the roadkill for some other school to use to go 2-1 OOC.
But now with the TV money, we shouldnt be so desperate.
UO really got it right this year. When BCS was all there is, strength of schedule meant something in BCS rankings. Now, looking at a playoff in the future, maybe that isnt the deal….just W-L?
Anyway, for a long time it seems our OOC scheduling just sucked. Esp with the rep that we soon got for starting slow. A slow starter like us should concentrate on patsies in the OOC.
When BCS was all there is, strength of schedule meant something in BCS rankings
Did it, though? Boise State never played anyone. OSU was considered their difficult game a few years ago.
SOS is like currency…it’s all relative. When the powerhouses in the SEC have three cupcakes each (and then beat up on each other), SOS becomes skewed.
Didn’t Boise State play Oregon, Oregon, Virginia Tech (same year as State) and Georgia in consecutive years? And all were ranked. And this year they play Michigan State and BYU.
Maybe I’m misunderstanding your point and you’re saying their conference schedule had them playing nobody, which I agree with. But they at least have scheduled tough games in the non-conference to make themselves relevant in the nations eyes.
Yes, so one or two hard (Oregon/Georgia) and mid-tier (VaTech/OSU) opponents over a few years. That’s a weak SOS.
Angry,
For the record, VaTech was a ranked team (and I want to say top 10) when they played them.
And they’ve played more good teams than that. They’ve long had a “we’ll play anyone, anywhere” scheduling policy. It’s just that few teams will take them up on it- and why would they? Playing Boise State (while they were a mid major) is high risk, no reward. Winning vs a mid major will not help you in the rankings, and losing to one will hurt you significantly.
No, Oregon State is the only one that kept coming back for more.
And for the record, playing good mid majors is in my opinion a far, far worse scheduling move than playing premium teams.
You lose to Penn State or LSU…it’s embarassing, but everyone knows you lost to a very good team. BYU, Boise St, Utah, TCU… your chance of winning may be just as low, but perception is way worse.
And that’s been our bread and butter in scheduling over the last 10 years.
VaTech are perennial poseurs, though. Their offense stinks. They lost to James Madison!
Angry and Steve makes some good points here and I wish to emphasize either the genius or simple dumb luck for Oregon to schedule both Michigan and Tennessee, for example, while those programs were on the downtick, while at the same time OSU is playing the following at the peak of their effectiveness: LSU, Fresno State, Louisville, Cincinnati, Boise, Wisconsin, and Penn State at the near top. The ONLY program that both UO and OSU scheduled while on the rise was Boise, but as someone else pointed out, only OSU signed up for additional servings. concur on the motivation too: $$$$. Thanks to Larry Scott we won’t have to offer ourselve up as much to balance the budget.
Oregon played Boise State twice, once at home and once away and lost both.
Oregon State has played them 5 times in the last decade, but at least they got a couple wins in there.
Georgia signed up to play them twice also (2005, 2011)
Angry, FYI- I think the comments are disabled on the newest post
Thanks
Rumor about Ducks sanctions is they would basically get what USC got. 2 year bowl ban and 30 scholarship reduction over 3 years. Doubt it’s legitimate though.
Enough with the duck rumors already. Not a fuckin thing is going to happen until it’s announced.
Wait, this just in… U of O will probably get some kind of penalty sometime in the future. It will be between the death penalty and vacating one win last year.
What’s the old saying? If it sounds to good to be true, it probably is…
But it’s what they deserve. Fking cheaters.
Where is this rumor being floated? here?
To play devil’s advocate…as a fan I appreciate the non-conference games. I’m a season ticket holder and attend every home game, and I would much rather see Wisconsin than Tennessee Tech or Ark State or whoever. The uck fans I’m friends with have no interest in the first three games and many of them are looking to sell their tickets to 2 or 3 of the games.
Also, our program is not exactly prominent nationally so we need games like the Wisconsin match-up to get in the spotlight even if it’s just for one week. And a win in a game like that will create some national buzz about OSU (or maybe just about how bad it was for Wisconsin) where beating down three I-AA schools could not.
Not to mention the more I-AA schools we play the greater the odds we lose to another one of them. At least when we lose to Wisconsin it’s a loss to a good I-A program. HA!
Overall, I agree that our non-conference scheduling sucks. The multiple games with BSU, ridiculous!
Stupid weak scheduling is a direct result of the BCS. That idiotic system placed more emphasis on not losing than it did on playing a real schedule. At least under the old system teams would play real non con games then still get to rep their conference by winning it in league play. Yes, that can still be done. But there is more emphasis on being an at-large BCS team or even getting to the BCS CG now then there is actually going to bowls which conferences have had somewhat regular tie-ins.
And now those bowls and all the others pretty much suck. Hell, half of them aren’t even on the same days they used to be. I remember when I used to wake up on New Year’s Day and listen to the Rose Bowl Parade while doing morning things. Then I would watch four consecutive games played in major bowls regardless of who was playing in them. And there were always a couple minor bowls playing on other channels if I wanted to surf for variety.
Now?
The parade is useless without the anticipation of any games. I don’t watch just one game because it’s been moved to prime time in order to get what they think is the biggest audience. By the time the New Year’s Day games roll around I’m doing something else, not caring about football. Over the next week, I couldn’t care less who plays in what game because it’s not my team, and it’s not my day off. If it was my team I would watch… obviously. But I don’t care otherwise.
And to top it off I haven’t seen anyone play for over a month. I don’t bother with lesser bowls played in the weeks leading up to New Year’s unless it’s my team. They’re all played at weird times on weird days, and they can get really boring.
On the flip side, I watch anything with a tourney. Win or go home means something. Who these teams played, won and lost to in the regular season means something if they want to get to that position. Sure, lesser teams from lesser conferences get in. But if they don’t play a respectable non con slate and do it fairly well they get their 14, 15 and 16 seeds… if they don’t have to play in.
And having an RPI-important tourney means fans of these schools don’t have to sit through boring games against Suck U. Who wants to spend good money on season tickets when they don’t even want to half the games?
More on SOS. From CFBmatrix:
Why does four teams at 804 hurt? Credibility and power. 8-4 gets you votes in the top 25, maybe even a spot from 21-25, but 9-3 is top 20. It’s all about wins and though the PAC12, in the CFBMatrix, has a near equal SOS to the SEC teams the system is about winning football games not the schedule. Boise State, TCU, Houston, USM, etc. have proven that many times over. So instead of 6 possible top 25 teams, you are now looking at 2-3 even though the talent is the same and schedules are harder.
