Greetings Beavlettes, and welcome to another exciting year of Beaver football!
So I've been looking over the final depth chart, and the only issues I have with the starters are Colin Kelly and Colby Prince. Now, I know why these two players are starting (experience, plus Caleb Smith/Gavin Andrews didn't do enough in camp), but still, those two are weak links. I'd personally rather see Tyler Anderson at FB, but some say he missed blocks, so I get it. On defense, Watkins over Zimmerman is the lone error, though with Watkins injured Zim will get the start this weekend. Sweet serendipity. Overall, this is the closest Riley's ever come to putting the right guys on the field.
Regarding Nicholls State, I've heard the same things you guys have: they incorporate elements of the spread and pistol, didn't score much last year, and now have incorporated more pro sets. I typed in "Nicholls State Football Preview" trying to find more info and possibly game film to analyze, but couldn't find anything. Nicholls State–the Simi Kuli of the Southland Conference?? Maybe they don't exist, and that, not Hurricane Isaac, is why they're not going to show up on Saturday. Speaking of Hurricane Isaac, that should be Seumalo's nickname–it can't be coincidence that he's playing his first game vs a team from that area, right? The odds are against that. I declare him Hurricane Isaac!
So, I expect the Beavs to have a vanilla game plan. Run left, run right, figure who on the O-line can run block, and then throw in a play action here and there. I know the pass game is the Beavs' strength, but they need to figure out who can block and who can't (I'm looking at you, Colin Kelly) before playing Wisconsin. That's not something to figure out in-game. They also need to establish an identity from the first play of the season, something Riley has never done, but he's also never put 90% of the right players on the field, so maybe after 12 years something is finally clicking in his slow, laconic brain. Riley will get to within 2 wins of Lon Stiner on Saturday. Lon had higher highs, like all the other successful OSU coaches, and for that reason I think it's a tarnished stat.
There's actually a lot of pressure on Riley and the Beavs this weekend. The Sac St debacle has to be in the back of their minds, and they've heard all the negative press this off season…plus, Riley feels his seat getting hotter (you can tell, because he's finally working again (e.g. taking over play calling, actually trying lol, etc).
I honestly believe the Beavs will dominate this entire game and put up 40+ points. I don't see Nicholls State scoring more than 10. So…how about something like 45-10? Maybe the vanilla game plan keeps them in the 30s.
Oh, and I usually am not one for sentimental gestures, but the Beavs will be wearing "FT 92" on their helmets this year in honor of Fred Thompson. Loved that guy (as much as a straight, angry writer can love a fellow male and football player from afar). It's classy in a good way. Good job getting something right, Beavs.
Can’t wait. Go Beavs!

I still don’t get the game on xfinity…I noticed they added CNN and HLM today. Are they making us sweat, or are they really going to renege? I’d hate to have to rely on Mike Parker all season…I think the blog would suffer if I can’t see/observe
Isn’t xfinity supposed to have the all-games-on-the-interweb feed set up before this weekend? You *should* be able to watch on your computer right?
Then we just need to have a computer super geek show us how to set up the angrybeavs private pirate feed. For OG forumites who can’t get the games any other way. :)
Yeah, they said they’ll be up by the weekend, but we’re getting down to the wire..
You might be able to find a feed on firstrow
Don’t you have a sports bar near you?
Going to a sports bar for a football game is not a solution for people with responsibilities… or even people with alcohol issues now that I think about it.
**Going to a sports bar for a football game is a solution for people with priorities.**
Fixed it for ya Jack.
More true.
Just trying to combine the words Saturdays and responsibilities makes my head hurt.
Hopefully First Row Sports is an option until the Pac-12 Networks get on satellite. I think Comcast should have used the regular Pac-12.com setup, like the other 3 main cable providers, instead of doing it on their own with Xfinity. Would have been better for Comcast subscribers and the Pac-12.
Oregon State should be able to get a large margin victory against Nicholls St. The Colonels haven’t been able to practice like the Beavs. Looks like this one is going to get played on time. Storm Woods needs to show he can be the man and get on track for 1000+ season yards. Mannion just has to play smart and lead a productive offensive unit. Defensively, I hope we are aggressive and can make plays on the ball. This needs to be a feel good win but also needs to start to erase past demons by being well and aggressively played from start to finish. Keep the petal down until late in the 4th and we should be able to score 42+ points and instill belief we can play with the Badgers.
OSU vs Nicholls St. Preview:
http://beaverbyte.com
Sounds like Nicholls State needs to find their identity…
I agree OSU needs to run at least 60% of the time and find out who can block. I’d like to see Storm Woods get a 100+ yards by early-mid-third quarter, and then see some other people run the ball. Agnew should get some carries and demonstrate he’s hanging on to the ball this year.
I’d like to see the D playing fast, tackling well, and finishing all game, I hope they don’t get sloppy if it gets out of hand.
Without the usual practices, I think the opponent should look fairly ragged in execution.
OT – WSU at BYU could be interesting Thursday night, a preview of what Leach is going to be doing.
From Cliff:
“The Beavers hope to color coordinate with their fans by announcing the jersey colors ahead of time. They are wearing orange against Nicholls State, Wisconsin, Washington State, Arizona State and Oregon, and black for Utah and California.”
Only black twice? That’s disappointing. CW’s a home game. Wear black.
Are those black uni’s longer?
I remember hearing something last year about the coaches letting the players choose what colors to wear, and the results were pretty much unanimous that the players preferred the orange. That could be the reason they are wearing them five times, and the black only twice.
Local sports bar in Springfield is showing the Beaver game and that is where I will be watching the game. Direct TV just hasn’t come through yet. I can see this is going to be an example of college football (at least Pac 12) blackmail.
I’m a little disappointed with Angry’s remarks about Nicholls State. They do exist and their community is going through a pretty tough time of it now. I just hope, if they make it to Corvallis, that Beaver fans don’t act like uck fans and treat them bad. The Colonels have as much pride for their school as we do ours. I agree that OSU should dominate the game and win by a good 20+ points. But if Riley stacks points up against them it doesn’t really prove anything relating to how good our team is. This game is going to be a contact practice, nothing more. I am looking to see how much Riley sends RB up the middle, how many down the field passes there are and how many passes on 1st down. Remember, one of the failures of OSU over the years is their play calling and game plan have been very predictable, this has to change.
I agree with wearing black more at games. I’d rather our team be called the “black death” rather than the “orange pumpkins”. I also think the WSU vs. BYU game should be very interesting. Let’s see how much improvement there is with WSU. I think you will be impressed with what a NEW coach can do with a team, especially when the coach instills in his team CHAMPIONSHIP thoughts. Wait and see.
I’ve been to many the game at reser Fighting Beav, and I’ve never seen the type of behavior you get from Duck fans from Beaver fans. I expect that those visiting fans that make the trip will be treated politely, like we always treat our visiting fans. I’m actually surprised you even mentioned the possibility.
What Bob, like Beaver fans Boooooing visiting team when they come onto field. That shows no class at all, and our fans do it. I’m just saying, after what the school and their community is going through maybe we can refrain from doing this at the game. Yes, deal with it, not all Beaver fans act with respect to other visiting fans. I agree the majority of Beaver fans don’t act like childish idiots like uck fans but some do, especially some drunk OSU students.
Really? Booing? That’s your ultimate measure on a home crowd’s level of maturity? I thought you were talking about drunk losers picking fights with children in the crowd who come with their parents decked out in the opposition’s colors. And I’m not talking teens. I’m talking six and eight year old kids who have drunk 20, 30 and 40-somethings in their face and pushing them around. I’m talking leaving a stadium and watching a bully shove an opposing fan to the ground in the middle of a crowd and running away laughing like it was good sport. I’m talking about fans who scream obscenities about the female members of the other team’s families… obscenities so lewd that they actually get in fights with some of the reasonable fans of their own team in the middle of a sporting event… so obscene that people who witnessed these instances still talk about them years after attending that venue.
And you’re talking about booing.
Get a grip. OSU fans as bad as Duck fans? That’s comparing apples and rocks.
And stop it with the pretend concern for hurricane victims. Bad things happen everywhere. And people pick up the pieces. Some of us have been there to help with that after some of these incidents. Many more will be there again. Don’t try to take the joy and light distraction of playing a game from them. Your pity is an insult to them.
Well said Jack, this was the context in which I was referring.
Incredibly well said.
Can you just pretend to be a Beav fan for once? Treat NS fans poorly? This is a fan base that did nothing when Duck losers stormed our own field and decided to burn the turf… after they ripped off the TV show they so love to welcome to their own home.
Btw… ESPN Gameday personnel expressed to OSU an extreme pleasure in working with the kids who volunteered and meeting the people around the OSU campus. One person I know (personally) told me that the attitudes were a 100% turnaround from their preconceived notions of what they would be dealing with based on their experiences at Nikegon. They thought they would have to tell their volunteers to do things twice… if they could find them doing something other than standing around chatting with their buds.
And buy a sense of humor you droll little mind!
Wow, someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed in his mom’s basement this morning. The Ducks do take the cake on being the worst fans of all, but we have plenty of childish fans too. (Remember the BYU game?). I think it is a west coast thing. I’ve been to many games in other parts of the country and the fans are so much more hospitable to the visiting fans than they are here on the West Coast.
First, my mother doesn’t have a basement.
Second, what about the BYU game?
Third, West Coast thing? Didn’t a Bama fan go and destroy a couple trees in Auburn which were century old icons of the town and university? And then, in true Bama booster fashion, didn’t he get free tickets to the BCS CG? And, in true Bama fandom, didn’t he get stopped by many many Bama fans so they could take pictures with him?
There are idiosyncrasies, good and bad, in every fan base. But the extremes are an exception. And Nikegon is extreme by construct. OSU tailgating can be as gracious as anywhere else despite the school’s attempts to dampen fun. And there are immature fans here as well as anywhere else you might go. These are college campuses full of kids. But very few go out of their way to be fully antagonistic for a full three hours, let alone taking their actions to levels of extremely lewd and physically aberrant behavior.
It’s unfair to label the silent majority of Duck fans with these tendencies. But the extremely vocal and physical minority overshadow them by a large margin.
Fourth, who says Nicholls State will have any fans at Reser? FB says they have as much pride in their school as we do in ours. But you would be hard pressed to find fans at any of their home games, let alone away games 2000 miles from home. I have news for y’all who haven’t been down in that part of the country to witness football season. Most Nicholls State would-be fans (students, alumni, employees) are LSU fans. LSU football is king in the bayou, and most Nicholls State state students and alumni will be watching their favorite team beat up on a Texas school this weekend and a Pac 12 school next weekend.
I’m a little disappointed in your use of the term “black death.” Many communities struggled during the plague, they had a pretty tough time of it.
Heh heh.
Black plague is what the defense used to be called. I prefer the orange jerseys over the black ones because orange is not a popular color to use; black is. ASU, Washington, Oregon, and many other universities have introduced black as an alternate color. There are only about 5-10universities who use orange as their school color. It will help distinguish us from Oklahoma state by wearing orange more than black.
WTF? This is what I get when I google “black plague oregon state.”
http://www.kmtr.com/news/local/story/Bubonic-plague-case-confirmed-in-Prineville/Co9wqODGC0q1acmBQl1CuQ.cspx
I thought we were kidding here. I googled this because I have never heard of “black death” or “black plague” when talking about, viewing, listening to OSU football. When was that?
Ew. They immunized us against that shit before we went overseas. I wonder how long the immunization is good for? That was 94-95.
Apparently it’s the fifth case in Oregon since 1995. And it’s easily treatable with streptomycin.
I guess I’ll have to be sure to bite my tongue around the couple hypochondriacs I know. Talk about cat scratch fever.
The phrase “Black Plague” and the “BLACK SWARM!” was coined in the 2000 era y some people due to the near all black uniforms OSU wore and also how the defense would “swarm” to the ball and “collapse” on the ball carrier. That’s how I knew of the phrase(s) growing up around OSU football.
I remember swarm.
Black lung? I guess that’s more of a West Virginia/Pennsylvania thing.
I’m just being stupid now. The season needs to start already!
“Black Lung” I’m really upset to see that term in use on here, so many communities have had such a rough go of it…
Stop! I just spit coffee on my keyboard!
What about San Diego State vs. Washington? Katz against the dogs!!!
Update from Nicholls State coach:
http://www.gazettetimes.com/sports/beavers-sports/football/osu-football-nicholls-state-plans-to-make-saturday-s-game/article_7c68c570-f12e-11e1-b446-0019bb2963f4.html?comment_form=true
LSU is still planning to play their home game Saturday. If they can hold a home game, seems like Nicholls state should be able to fly out of town on time to make our game. Really don’t want this to become our “bowl” game this year….
http://www.wbrz.com/news/les-miles-planning-to-play-saturday/
Some notes from the Portland Tribune:
This answers my question about Noa Aluesi “Have any practice watchers seen promise in this young player:”
“True freshman Noa Aluesi — the former Jefferson High quarterback now playing defensive end at Oregon State — has caught Riley’s eye. “We want to redshirt him because he needs extra strength training, but he’s an exciting prospect,” the OSU coach said of Aluesi, now 6-6 and 275 pounds. … ”
While a bit of a project, I think this kid has exciting potential to be a relatively unusual DE for OSU -his height and weight are above the norm for what the Beavs usually stock at DE and he’s not done adding weight yet. His potential for blocking passes seems good, hope he has the quickness and can provide run support.
“Jordan Poyer will return punts and Brandin Cooks is the No. 1 man for kickoff returns.”
I really wish they wouldn’t risk Poyer at this, particularly in a game like this. To me, Cooks’s quickness seems to lend well to PR duties.
“Besides starting center Isaac Seumalo, tight end Caleb Smith, linebacker Joel Skotte and offensive linemen Josh Mitchell and Gavin Andrews are slated for duty for the Beavers this season. All other true freshmen are expected to redshirt, Riley said.”
Looking forward to Smith, and the Skotte debate begins on AngryBeavs….hope he’s not another Robinson. The fact that Bray seems to like him gives me some optimism. If there’s a blowout victory this weekend, maybe Skotte will get more than ST duty.
I’ve always liked Skotte. He plays downhill and low at the point of attack. The only thing I worry about with him is injury because of how hard he plays.
They should only use Poyer in special situations. Too valuable to get hurt returning punts every time.
Hard to believe some of the backup WR’s can’t be trusted to field a punt?
He’s a baller. Let him play. Why hamstring him?
I agree. There are two modes to a football game, you’re either trying to win, or you’ve already won and now you’re trying to run out the clock/get playing time for the scrubs/avoid injuries to your starters.
If you’re trying to win, put your best players on the field, like Poyer returning punts! Once it’s a blowout, then pull him for someone else. People say don’t risk injury, but if he presents the best chance for additional return yards (better starting field position) and TDs then WTF would you be saving him for?
This is like when a basketball coach benches a player when he gets in foul trouble, WITH 30 SECONDS LEFT IN THE GAME! Or better yet, Riley not using his timeouts so he can save them up at the end of the year to boost his paid time off.
I’d be more concerned with the player’s mental state after the coach explains to him why he’s being overly conservative. Doesn’t that send a message to the player that he should also be overly conservative?
I liken it to the difference between trying to win and trying not to lose.
I’d “hamstring” him in this game because depth at CB is thin and Poyer is probably one of the Beavers top 3 defenders (Chricton, Wynn the others).
I’d hamstring him because this should be a game the Beavers control, and it allows for experience for and development of another player.
And if it is a blowout, I’d pull him in the fourth and get Handford and Martin needed reps.
When “depth” is shallow, and gametime for inexperienced players hard to come by, you need to give those inexperienced players reps to improve depth when you have the opportunity. This weekend should be such an opportunity.
Very worthwhile discussion going here, I agree with Jack’s point about the mental state aspect. Also see Critic’s point about getting experience for others and avoiding injury, the final paragraph is spot on.
So, to reconcile the two, I’d suggest that it is important that Riley fully explain to Capt. Poyer that in this game he will not be returning punts. Use Critic’s points to avoid any damage to Poyer’s psyche.
I could have sworn last night on Talkin’ Beavs they said Wheaton would also return some kicks. Maybe I misheard them or maybe they meant Cooks? They were saying you might as well put your fastest guys in position to make plays where the speed will help.
I heard that Wheaton will be returning punts, so I don’t think you misheard. It seemed pretty discrete; Cooks on KR, Wheaton on PR.
Here’s my take on the game,
Sounds like Nicholls State is just showing up and playing with minimal game prep. Make no mistake, the effort level will be there. Might see some trickery to get a free score. There will be no repeat of last year. With the exception of D line, all positions are better than last year at this point.
I expect somewhat of a blowout. I think Riley will hold back on offense when the game gets out of control to respect the adversity the other team has experienced this week. I think the D will be unleashed all game to get their confidence up for Wisconsin.
I’m expecting a lot of power running, over 200yds on the ground. Have the Oline exert their will over Nicholls St. Mannion should have a vanilla game, 200yds, couple TDs.
This year’s team should be able to shake off any mistakes they make during the game and just over power Nicholls St.
Final score – OSU 48 – Nicholls St – 3.
Also as for the Poyer argument on returning kicks. I heard no complaints when Stroughter or James was returning kicks. You put the player you trust the most back there.
“I heard no complaints when Stroughter or James was returning kicks. You put the player you trust the most back there.”
True, but Stroughter and James were not the Beavs’ best CB. It’s easier for OSU to replace a PR than it is to replace a CB. I’d love to see Cooks returning punts as well as kicks.
They were only the best WRs on the team……Cooks has ball control issues. Remember he fumbled last year. Riley does not put people who fumble.
He has a tendency to overuse players. See our running backs. Let some of the guys that are not playing much get a chance to contribute. Returners take a lot of big hits. Poyer should be making, not taking hits.
Yes! Football season is finally upon us! Am I the only one mildy worried here. Call it the Sac St. effect but I am a tad worried that this game could be closer than people think.
42-3?
Angry, I’m not a huge Colby Prince fan based on his on-field performance last year.
I remember seeing Connor Hamlett in fall practice last year and was impressed, though he needed to bulk up a bit. I remember him catching passes over the middle that Joe Halahuni was having trouble with. With Hamlett having a whole year under his belt do you really think true freshman Caleb Smith is the way to go?
Should be some big gains off of fly sweeps, reverses. Than nice runs up the middle. Wheaton and cooks should have some nice running plays.
If I knew how I’d attach a link, but the Olympia, WA newspaper yesterday had a big feature on Ajamu, the TE recruit from nearby Shelton. Highlights: he attended the following camps: NW Elite on Mercer Island; Nike SPARQ in Tigard; Nike in Eugene. In addition to the offers already attributed (Wyoming, Nevada, PSU) he says he was offered by WSU. As to why he chose Corvallis, he said “What they run is a perfect offense for me. They use tight ends a lot. There were a few schools I was leaning toward, but once I went to OSU, I felt wanted, I felt welcomed, I felt loved.”
http://www.theolympian.com/2012/08/28/2227792/campaign-works-for-shelton-pair.html
It’s only Wednesday :( Can’t wait til gameday.
OT: I took WSU getting 13.5 tomorrow night, so look forward to BYU blowing them out by halftime and 2 quarters of garbage time.
I took the 13.5 on WSU also and I don’t see a blowout. I see the Cougars keeping it close.
I think that this should be a close game but my golden touch of betting on a game will almost certainly backfire on this one.
Outstanding 5 minute video about Mizzu athletics. OSU needs to have someone make something like this for us.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w-i0l4Xq5Vk&feature=player_embedded
The credits are the only funny part. Way too many anachronisms to suspend reality.
They’re not related to you… are they?
They’re not related to me, but you’re wrong, it’s incredibly funny. Especially since I clicked on it thinking it was a legitimate video about to sing the praises of the university. Just like when someone told me the movie “Top Secret” was a realistic WW2 movie when it first came out. Love it when someone sets it up like that.
Thanks for wasting your time watching it though.
It’s not terrible. I just couldn’t get over the “1920’s hoopster” with the black nike high-tops on… or the myth about height in the 1920’s. I guess I was lost after that.
I did like the quizzical shrug while pointing at the sculpture. That was pretty good.
Was Hauck the coach when we played UNLV?
No… Sanford
Fred? Lamont Asst Head Coach lol.
Ahhhh…. they play UM this weekend eh?
Yup
@ angry
Don’t know if this has already been discussed but if it hasn’t then, the Aug 20 issue of SI has an article about Nick Saban “The Sabanization of College Football”.
One of the things that’s emphasized in the article is the importance of a sports psychiatrist which I remember you and others talking about last season.
I thought “The Sabanization of College Football” might be a topic which you and the others might offer your comments about the article from the perspective of “perhaps OSU should consider incorporating this item, that item, etc. etc. into the program.
Obviously the Beavers can’t spend the kind of money that Alabama is spending but that doesn’t mean they couldn’t incorporate at least some of what Saban is doing.
Yes, Beavs could incorporate some of what Saban is doing, it has been reported that Beavs baseball and another sport (gymnastics??) have already found ways to involve a sports shrink, Mike Riley may have also but I’ve never seen that in print.
Nicholls State isn’t without their own surprises:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8qtIP05-Am8
I have to say, this is shaping up to be a feel-good disaster for the Beavs. Poor Nichols State, battered by the hurricane, forced to miss practice all week. They came straggling into a strange land, unpracticed, scared and unwashed. They rose above it, and pulled off the biggest upset in they Country. This will be the feel good story of the college football world. And you know something like that would happen to the Beavs. Fuck.
LOL …. wow, some really dark thoughts there.
I dont think so……but hold this cheery thought — if that happens, Riley can pack his bags.
We surprised Wisc. with our trick backwards punt. They never saw it coming.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fez5_Ee4fww
While I didn’t predict the negative punt, I did, twice, mention to Badger fans in the stands that our punter is known as shank-a-game.
http://www.stubhub.com/oregon-state-football-tickets/oregon-state-vs-nicholls-state-9-1-2012-4014475/
Tickets in the upper level only $1 on stubhub! I’m leaving for my Honeymoon that morning, or I’d be there!
Hopefully you’ll be enjoying the upper, and other levels, wherever you are.
Hopefully he will be in the box. It’s all downhill from there so have fun. Take a page from Chip Kelly and go for two LOL!
Haha! Thanks!
Going to play the fight song after the score?
It’s another O-S-U… never mind.
Jon Wilner?@wilnerhotline
Source: No deal between the Pac-12 and DirecTV this week. (Trying to get info on other providers.)
*C’mon Dish Network! Would love to see you steal the limelight and probably pick up quite a few subscribers as well. :)
Jon Wilner?@wilnerhotline
Also: There will be no deals this week btwn Pac12 and Charter and Fios. (Checking on Dish and U-verse)
I called DishNetwork yesterday, and the rep on the phone told me they are currently not even talking to PAC12 reps about any sort of package, and they have no plans to any time soon.
If that is indeed the case, when my house closes in Corvallis in October, I intend to drop DISH during the move and go with Comcast. I find the idea that they are “not even talking to PAC 12” reps offensive. I pay to much anyway, I just need an excuse…
Thanks for the memories! It was a hot day at Camp Randall. Just when I thought it couldn’t get worse, got a text from a buddy saying U of M lost to New Mexico State and our coach had a major medical emergency. That was a bad day to be a Beaver and a Gopher. Last year really sucked.
Langsdorf says, about Riley now calling the plays:
“I think (Riley) missed it, and I enjoyed doing it, too,” Langsdorf said. “I think we work together closely on the game plan, so I don’t think it’s a major deal. I don’t think you’re going to see – you’re not going to notice it, I don’t believe.”
I hope he is dead wrong!
No shit. We better notice something.
You don’t suppose that it’s going to be a case where langsdork is still calling the plays (or a majority of them) and Riley is taking the responsibility do you? One of them “you call the plays and I’ll take the heat” deals.
If we run more than five plays, then Danny is out of the loop.
You also see in the article them talking about how they will be able to open up the playbook just based on added experience of the offense (Mannion in particular), and presumably based on a better run game. Point being, might be difficult to tell what is Riley and what is just the natural progression in playcalling with a better equipped offense.
There was a game last year (WSU?) where the play calling suddenly went creative. Then in later games it lapsed back into predictability. If predictability was because of Mannion’s and other’s inexperience, how could that have happened?
Predictability isnt a matter of the number of plays, anyway. Even if you screw up a trick play, it can serve to put the defense off.
To me, bottom line is that our ultra conservative Riley wouldnt make that change if there was no reason.
OT: Oregon State basketball schedule http://www.osubeavers.com/sports/m-baskbl/sched/orst-m-baskbl-sched.html
No Georgetown, unfortunately. Playing San Diego in Vegas and playing @ Portland State. Hopefully that’s at the RG. Tough games in nonconference all in November
My friend is a big PSU guy, and he said he had heard about the Oregon State @ PSU game back in spring. He says it sounds like they’re planning to have it at the PSU gymnasium. Anybody who’s ever been there knows it’s not much bigger than a large high school gym. It’s gonna be packed. Better get your tickets early.
Best I can tell it will be at the Stotts Center which is about 1500 seats. If the Beavers win the 2K Classic and can pull off the upset in KC, a ranked OSU team would be playing there and it will be packed. I’m surprised the Beavers would play there though.
Ugh!
OSU hoops will play in Vegas on the same day as the MAACO Bowl Las Vegas.
Decisions, decisions, decisions….
I’m always up for a Vegas trip. December is a good time to go because the hotels are so cheap. I think I’ll have to seriously consider taking in a road game (or 2). The football game starts at 12:30 and the basketball game is at 6:00.
If both teams are playing in Vegas on that day, I think I may have to go. My wife loves Vegas… and I love roller coasters.
At the last Vegas Bowl we went to in 2008 (the BYU debacle) I froze my balls off by halftime. Dress warmly, my friend…..
Is it safe to assume that you and the wife will be there in March 13th for the Pac12 tourney?
To help pass the time until kickoff. Let’s have everyone relive the feeling they experienced the instant the Sac St player caught that pass in the end zone for the 2 point conversion, and the win.
I’ll start:
“He pushed off! That was clearly pass interference!” The refs really hosed us out of a 4-8 season.
Who’s next?
Visions of swallowing my 45
LOL @ being cheated out of 4-8.
45, old school. The ones we qualified on in the Navy were so inaccurate, you had better have been doing your best Linda Lovelace impression rsteve or you were liable to miss.
Also like the 4-8!
Yeah, I have no illusions on that. And aiming at your temple, you might flinch a bit and just do a lobotomy.
But then that might allow me to take to liking Langsdorf’s play calling…lol.
The game could be postponed until Sunday or Monday?! Thank God for a 3 day weekend! lol

God I hope not. It might be a long weekend, but people make hotel reservations and other plans around the scheduled date. Moving it 1 or 2 days back will be chaotic for the fans. Of course I want what’s best for the players, but I don’t see the difference moving it to Sunday would make. The team has a chartered flight prepared.
While we’re on the subject, has anybody else read about the floating coffins in Louisiana due to rising flood waters? Apparently they’re coming out of their graves. eghhh……
That happens a lot. That’s why New Orleans cemeteries are all above ground.
I think the above ground burial thing in Louisiana is more of a tradition dating back to their Spanish connection days than it is to prevent coffins from floating out of their graves when floods occur. (Although that does happen.) Above ground burials were popular in Spain at the time.
Actually, the above ground burials in the delta were a matter of common sense. Even without flooding, coffins would float out of the silty earth all on their own. I’m sure technology has found ways to anchor or weigh them down now, but part of New Orleans lore is about this phenomenon and how it freaked the original French settlers out.
I think “lore” is where you’re right. Dig into the origins more and you’ll find a Spanish influence. My wife has studied this stuff.
Yes, I know the story of the fire, floods, epidemics and Governor Miso (?) being a Spaniard who “just wanted to honor his culture.” But that’s secondary to the reality of burial at the time. The first cemetery had constant problems with bodies, bones and caskets floating out of the earth. And you can only imagine what rains and floods did to them. The solution for 70 years was to build a big brick wall around the cemetery, so it became one massive pool of mixed dead people and dead people parts.
There were a couple other cemeteries in outlying areas which were other settlements at the time. New Orleans has since expanded well beyond the French Quarter. And those cemeteries were paved over like the original just outside the Quarter. To this day, people have bones rise out of the ground in those areas.
I looked it up, and they drained the water table to 15 feet underground around 1900… and they keep it there… when they can. So below ground burials are possible due to this.
Back to Miso and his cemetery layout. It wasn’t strictly a Spanish custom to intern the dead above ground. It was common all across Mediterranean Europe (and in many other cultures around the world in different ways). It is considered a Latin method, but the story of New Orleans somehow turned Latin into Spanish.
Above ground internment was just a solution to mass burial which worked in New Orleans at the time. That it happened to conform to Portuguese, Spanish, French and Italian customs was just a bonus.
Damn!
Esteban Rodriguez Miró y Sabater
That reminds me… I have fresh corn on the cob. I need to go get some shiromiso.
I’m trying to remember the story of Miro stopping the Spanish Inquisition. But this conversation has gone on long enough for an OT, and nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition.
Word.
No, NO ….no delays. Get this one over and work on what showed up wrong. Lets make a good showing on Wisconsin…..
No, no…
Maybe reading too much into it, but the idea that you would go for a “guaranteed” victory on Sunday/Monday and play Wisconsin on Saturday tells me that think they can beat Nicholls state, the AD or Coaching staff lack confidence they can beat Wisconsin, and they want to make sure they get the Nicholls state W to improve their chances of getting to 6 wins.
Then with a poor showing against Wisconsin, you can say “Our guys only had four days to prepare, not a neat deal.”
Yes, you’re reading way too much into it.
Thats what we need, even less time prior to Wisc.
Isn’t everyone taking Labor Day off from practices on Monday? or do they always practice on Labor Day?
But it does provide a nice excuse.
I also like the last part of this article, “No lead should feel comfortable.” That is the key to this teams success. Not letting you think you’ve won it before the clock strikes 0:00.
I’m so pumped for the season to finally start. I’ve officially allowed myself to get my hopes up for this season, as I do every season, knowing I could very well be bitterly disappointed before we get to the middle. Let’s go beavs!
I keep seeing headlines related to hurricane Isaac and my mind wanders to how they would apply to Isaac Seumalo. A few examples of current headlines we could see again during the season.
“Pounding continues from slow-moving Isaac”
“The story: Isaac still packs a punch”
“Intentional breach weighed as Isaac batters La.”
“Isaac Threatens the Gulf Coast, Potentially Affecting Vacationers”
“Isaac videos records overnight action in New Orleans …”
“Isaac rips roof off Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser’s house”
On a positive note, it sounds like the brunt of the storm side stepped the greater New Orleans area and hit harder in smaller coastal communities.
I’ll be able to stomach Kelly playing if the freshman’s redshirts are preserved.
What do you mean by “if redshirts are perserved”. A player could redshirt as a soph or as a junior or even as a senior. I’m guessing what you’re not wanting is only a little playing time?
Angry, your post is a little disturbing. I think you try and find flaws where there are none. Case in point you complain about the starting of Zimmerman over Watkins. However earlier in the comments of one of your posts you were asked which starters should not be starting. You said that Zimmerman should be starting over Watkins. Odd that now you don’t believe that and try and make the coaches sound bad. So which is it, the coaches should be starting Watkins, and you lied earlier, or Zimmerman should be starting and you must find problems where there are none?
It should have read “On defense, Watkins over Zimmerman is the lone error”…changed it. Thanks for catching it.

The OSU football game is officially postponed. The game will not be made up this weekend. Dec. 1 the first chance. More out soon.
Shit! Hope all is well down there, darn it.
Extra week to prepare for Wisconsin, but would’ve liked some live game time, not to mention game day experience. Bummed.
WIsh everybody down there good health
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!…. Im disapointed.
Maybe if we would of picked someone tougher than Nicholls St. to begin with..
Like Sac State!
I feel like they need a real game as part of the prep. I don’t want to open against Wisconsin. This blows.
seriously… once again the Beavers find a way to screw themselves over
How did the Beavers screw themselves? Did you say that when the Montana game was canceled in 2001? Sh!t happens, life’s a b!tch…suck it up and move on.
I guaran-damn-tee you that folks aren’t sitting around VFC shaking their heads saying “we’ve screwed ourselves…”
Nut up. A tune up would be nice, but this could give us an edge – now, more than ever, we don’t have to worry about Sac St. II – just go at those Badgers!
Looks like during championship week when all the big time schools are jockeying for BCS bowls the Beavs might have their own high stakes game to see if they can make a bowl.
GAME POSTPONED – Totally saw this coming. Kept thinking “why doesn’t Nicholls St. leave early and beat Isaac?” Whatever….There are bigger things than football.
Hopefully OSU puts the extra time to good use. How about a scrimmage for the fans who won’t get to see a game this weekend?
Damn !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Silver lining: Comcast gets another week to get its s*** together for online viewing…
And the general shit storm about to hit Directv on the west coast might spur them to make a hasty decision within the next couple days as well.
Hmmm… sifting through emails, and I run into a reply from a friend who works in the TV industry. He essentially says Directv deal will be done, but they are playing hardball now because they want to seem to relent into the deal they always wanted. He’s heard from contacts that Directv wants to mitigate cash outlays in the first year, and they would do this by skipping the first week.
Apparently TV finds little value in the first week of games? Go figure.
But they also want to assign the same value to that week as they would for rivalry week. So they are drawing a hard line now in order to relent and say, “Fine. We’ve heard from our customers, and we underestimated them and the Pac 12 Network. We will accept the terms as discussed except we want a 7.7% reduction in cost for this year since we just can’t have it up and running until next week.”
