Nicholls State — Postponed

91

The game has been postponed. The trend continues–if the Beavs didn't have bad luck, they wouldn't have any luck at all.

Ramifications:

  • Lower attendance if/when they do make this game up.
  • No tuneup for Wisconsin
  • Likely start 0-1 instead of 1-0

The positives are they'll have two weeks to prepare for Wisconsin and should be healthier.

  1. What a way to get excited about this season. We suck ass at getting any sort of early season excitement. So pissed and we haven’t even played a game yet. We fn better beat Wisconsin!

  2. Wouldn’t it be the Beavs luck that they would agree to play this game midweek before Wisconsin? We would have less time to prepare for Wisconsin and god forbid we lose our mojo and lost to another FCS team.

  3. If the Beavs had rolled ’em what would have been the benefit? If Nicholls St hadn’t provided much, if any, competition how much preparation does that give the Beavs for their next game?

If the Beavs rolled over them, imo it would be like a kid that’s big for his age picking on some other kid who’s 3 years younger and a runt for his age. Would that help the teams mental preparation for the next game? Would it help them physically?

Worse yet, what if the game had been close or what if the Beavs got beat?

Never could come up with many reasons that justified even playing this game. The main one is it would/should have been a win. Now as far as the quality of the win…………

    • Benefits? I think the most important is that the O line would have learned something about cohesiveness by playing at game speed against a pretty good sized D line.

    • Benefits??? Like a one game of game- experience for our new players? And a warmup before taking on Wisconsin, who will have had a warmup game???

  4. Isn’t the question now whether or not the lack of game experience against N.State is offset by the additional practice/prep/healing time now available?

While I might be able to argue either side, I sure hate for the team to miss out on the confidence and “game speed” experience which would have likely come from playing this Saturday. At least having the decision made this early does free up time which would have gone toward N.State specific preparation.

  5. Temple, the only other FBS school with only 11 games scheduled, has the same bye week as us. We need to spread this around so it gets up to DeCarolis.

  6. The other positive in addition to the two week prep time and health is that the Wiscy game is a home game. I can’t remember the last time OSU started a season with against a big program at home. The early season games against LSU, Penn State, etc. have always been on the road. I think this could lead to an interesting dynamic, energy, and sold out stadium (with decent Wisc representation). I expect the team to be very amped up, good or bad.

I think the toughest challenges are for Woods (a game under his belt would have been nice before Wisc) and the offensive line. The rest of the team should do fine.

What’s the best thing for the Beavs to do Saturday? Some scrimmaging, 1’s against the 1’s to get Woods and the Oline ready? Extra Wisconsin prep?

    • Best thing for Saturday? A real nit-picking session on fundamental tackling and blocking followed by an exhausting cardio workout. Throw in viewing the Badger game and a pep talk about playing the cards you are dealt.

With the depth issues, I’d hold off on any 1’s vs 1’s.

    • We do not get another week to prepare for Wisconsin, unless we have secretly been preparing for them all along. Only a couple extra days. Meanwhile they get a warmup game and we get none.

There isnt much positive in this.

  7. We could have used the game as a confidence booster. But maybe we will pick up a game later.. Guess we will see. Hopefully it doesn;t mean missing out on a bowl.

  8. The prep time for Wisconsin, the team getting healthier, and most importantly, the team getting a chance to see what this years Wisconsin team is like by watching game film starting Saturday watching the game live! We won’t have any film to give them and the playbook/ game plan is still unknown to Wisconsin at this point. This gives us a competitive edge against Wisconsin. I like our chances more now than having of played a game this weekend to give away any weaknesses we may have besides the questionable positions. I’m disappointed in this occurrence, but perhaps it’s a blessing in disguise?

  9. What happened to CraigBeav? Last I heard he was gonna be out making me proud about the postponement… Strategy wise I do believe there is an element in not showing your hand by playing the patsy the week prior. I believe this advantage is offset by our unoriginal staff, but in my opinion is still enough to even out this lack of game speed practice. The atmosphere for Wisconsin as the opener should be really great.

  10. You guys sound like a bunch of crybaby football fans to me. You remind me of Duck fans with all your crying. “I’m going to take my ball and go home”……….what a shame. The postponement is no one’s fault. Shi# happens. I don’t hear anyone on here as of yet wish Nicholls State players, coaches, families or community well after all they are going through. My prayers go out to them and the people of Louisiana. So selfish on your part.

Beating Nicholls State would not have gained our football program much except full contact practice and the win Mike Riley wanted so desperately wanted under his belt.

Don’t blame not playing this game on a loss to Wisconsin. A win with Wisconsin was in doubt from the start. This will definitely show us how good or not good MR is in preparing team for the game.

    • another negative is that the “regularly scheduled” bye is the week after the Wisconsin game. That means for the conference opener UCLA would have played 3 games, the Beavs one. I heard Neuheisel the other day on Jack Arute’s show say that a college football team reaches it’s improvement efficiency level after 3 games; meaning, the improvement curve is greatest over those 3 games. On that theory UCLA will be way ahead.

        • I might disagree with you there. New staff as well, so I expect some growing pains. Talent is also in the eye of the beholder. UCLA has proven beatable even in OSU down years, so I am not concerned. If we get trounced by Wisconsin, then I might have concerns.

    • Fighting beav, am I missing something? People in here are naturally disappointed that the game isn’t happening, but I’m not seeing blaming or crybabying. Of course people are talking about the pros and cons of not having the game, which is appropriate for here. If you want to see embarrassing comments, look on the osu football facebook page (and some of the real classy comments were deleted).

    • I see you didn’t waste any time incorporating the Ducks into this comment. Next time, you should just lead with them. It would tell the reader that self-righteous drivel is imminent instead of having to read two of your sentences.

    • Hah, you are already counting Wisconsin in the loss column? You are a Duck troll. I was at that game last year. We can definitely play with these guys. We just can’t make mistakes like giving them punts for negative yards in our own territory. This years team is LEAPS and BOUNDS better then the last, so I have higher expectations. With MR calling the plays I except a great season and to be competitive right up till the last game.

    • Look on the last thread bucko. There was best wishes to Nicholls St. Secondly, it’s been lowered to a tropical storm. Have you been looking at the photos? It really isn’t that bad over there. Just heavy rain, wind and a few inches of water in most areas.

    • You sound like a fool.

We are missing a game of experience before starting serious play, for no reason (other games, IN New Orleans are going ahead) and you see no downdide.

      Very foolish, imo.

    • Yes, the game could have been played, but if N.State truely had players scattered to help their families then this is the best decision. We all know life is more than FB.

It is, though, a net disadvantage to the Beavs season to have only one game then a bye and then the balance of the season. Wannabeav made this point well at 6:32 above.

      • Yeah, true, but originally they were going to wait until Thursday to decide. Those players might be done helping their families by tonight. Just seems like they should have waited…no harm in doing so, and possibly could have got the game in.

  11. Compared to last year we’re already ahead!

Instead of heading to Big-10 Wisconsin after a deflating loss to an FCS team, we are waiting at home undefeated! It gives Danny L. another week to devise a highly creative attack. No wait…he won’t do that.

The Nicholls State game may have been a good tune-up but there is nothing wrong with opening up with a big meaningful game.

I’m not joining the “no 6 wins” bowl lament. Even with a likely win over Nicholls I don’t see an additional 5 wins. No bowl this year.

PS: I was so looking forward to using the new and expanded Lost and Found. I went to Goodwill yesterday and bought 10 wallets to scatter around the stadium.

    • another positive, for those with such a world view, is that this postponement/cancellation diminishes the prospect of a year’s extention for Riley.

    • I’ve seen reports that they’re considering moving the game to the same weekend as the Pac-12 Championship game. Doesn’t that mean they’re already planning on not playing in that game? If I were on the team and the administration was already sending messages my way that they don’t believe in me, why would I want to play hard for the school? Seriously, why can’t they just do something right? LSU and Tulane are both playing home games that weekend (as of the current plan at least). No the Nicolls State game is effectively our bowl game. We need to get that game in prior to the Pac-12 championship game to help the Beavs even be considered for a bowl.

        • I did see that Lousiana Tech’s game at Texas A&M got postponed too, but they had a backup plan and already rescheduled for an October date. That makes sense, since both schools had a date available. Our game got cancelled before a back up plan was even available.

        • this may be the low point of my dozen or so years as a beav fan. An AD from a I-AA team pushes us around. Pathetic doesn’t begin to describe this situation.

          • I wouldn’t say he got pushed around. This game’s payday means alot to the Nicholls State program as well. They depend on this extra revenue to keep their program running. It’s gonna hurt them as much as it will hurt us. Instead of saying Decarolis got pushed around, I would say he just made a bad/rushed decision which he can’t go back on now.

          • No ….he got pushed around! This postponement is in NS’s favor, not ours at all. They get development time before playing us, we get none before playing Wisconsin. They still get their money, and maybe the prestige of playing us competitively with a better chance to beat us.

If we play them at season’s end, it REALLY sucks, because its a bowl game for them, and probably meaningless for us. If we are already bowl eligible, what upper tier bowl is going to give us much credit for adding a 1-AA win, and if beating NS takes us to 6 wins, what kind of consideration is that going to get us?

NS bent Bobby D over a chair and pounded it to him-us. What a moron (no disrespect intended).

          • How do they get paid anyway? Only way they get paid is if they actually do reschedule the game. It seems at this point a better option would be to schedule a game on our bye week (september 15?) and offer to let anybody who also has a bye week come play us.

    • Guess I will be calling DTV. This sucks… Comcast peeps, what tier do I have to subscribe to to get the games? Maybe its worth throwing some cash in for a 3 months basic cable subscription. Hopefully I can get DTV to drop my bill a bit to compensate.

  12. This is bullshit. On Saturday as regularly scheduled, Tulane is playing in New Orleans and LSU is playing in Baton Rouge. Nichols St. could have flown out here tomorrow as originally planned.

  13. Eggers, writing before the canx, says it, “would be disastrous for Oregon State. The Beavers desperately need a warmup game …, especially for the development of their offensive line…and Woods”

    http/portlandtribune.com/pt-rss/12-sports/114355-kerry-says-osu-must-make-sure

    • The only bad part I see is that there is no rollout planned for a googletv/appletv/xbox app. HBO and Netflix have apps I would use on that format. I know some of the cable/fee based networks like TNT also have an app. If google/apple get their crap together, they can add the major networks, ESPN, etc. as a la carte apps, and I’m done with bundling content with some middle man. They’ve added Hulu recently. They’re just one Pac 12 app away from me stripping my DTV bill down to bare bones so I can add just the network apps I watch. Since all Pac content will be available on demand after the fact, I can do what I do with NASCAR. I’ll just do the things I like to do on weekends and wait until I settle in for the evening to watch an ad free event. All I would need is an internet feed and a one time set top unit purchase.

      • This is exactly what i’d like to do. Record them shits or stream it and watch it on a Wednesday afternoon when I have time.

Jack you may want to repost your directv info from the other thread on this one too. What you’re saying makes sense and hopefully directv will have their shit together next week.

  14. My buddy just sent me this from the rivals publisher:

So the Rutgers-Tulane go is a go as of this morning. Rutgers is flying TO New Orleans…into the heart of the storm so to speak. The Superdome sustained some damage, but they indicate they will be ready to play the game Saturday. The airport is open. Tulane’s AD is quoted as saying “we have concluded it is not only appropriate to move ahead with this event but essential to show he nation the resolve and resiliency of our community when faced with enormous adversity”.

Nothing about any safety concerns for home or visiting team. Nothing about missed practices.

LSU, a few miles up the road, is set to host a game on Saturday.

Anyone think the Oregon State and
Nicholls State ADs acted a bit hastily, especially in light of games that are being played in the area?

Since it’s written by a rivals publisher on their site, can we now admit the game was called too soon? I know people rarely take my word for things and need the backing of rivals, scout, or some “official” source to cement their opinions.

    • Angry – I think the main issue was that they told all of the players to go home. They could fly out to Oregon tomorrow morning as planned, but their players are spread out all over Louisiana and they can’t get all of them back on campus in time to leave. Nicholls St AD said that they are concerned about the players’ safety traveling back to campus, and not necessarily the travel to Oregon. The should have never let the players leave campus. What a joke!

    • Fuk….its a BIT HASTY, even by BDC statdards, as I recall it said they would talk TONIGHT. Heavy rain causes game cancellation 2500 miles away…….wow — that is soem far-reaching damn rain.

  15. Yes Angry, the game was called too soon. But golly gee, it is going to be sunny in Corvallis on Saturday and through the entire Labor Day weekend so now we can celebrate the true meaning of the holiday. I will be in a hammock with a beer for 3 straight days watching college football. If the Beavs aren’t playing, it can’t get any better than this.

  16. the optics of this are just awful. Amateurish AD; Portland State taking pity on us by allowing Nicholls ticket holders to get in that game free. Actively pursuing a strategy that overtly admits that we would play a make up game the week of the conference championship. To someone with a background in psychology–why am I more agitated about all this than LOSING to Sac State last year.?

  17. Why do we get played like this??

For Nichols State this is win, win. — the game is proably played at the end of the season, as a bowl game for them, and a meaningless one for us. Either we are already bowl eligible or we use it to get into a garbage bowl. If it gets us into a bowl, we will be ridiculed.

Playing a low tier school at the end of a season? (oor at alny time after conference play starts) what the hell

Why is our AD so dumbass?.

And the odds of us beating Wisconsin just got smaller, …They get a warmup game, we dont.

    • I think that’s it, rsteve. The Nicholls guys “read” BDC’s lack of confidence somewhere in the dialogue about playing a game championship weekend and just decided to press his advantage. There is no way that game should have been postponed to any later than Monday.

  18. While the football team schedules a non-conference game during the P-12 championship weekend the baseball team has higer goals, this from Yeskie’s twitter account:

Beaver Nation – We are about a week away from the lots of returners and some new guys reporting for #Operation Omaha! Excited to do work!

    • Before I could afford season tix to the Beavs I used to go to many PSU games. Remember when they played a season at Hillsboro stadium? That place was jammed to the rafters with the most energetic football crowds ever, game after game. They had the Oregon National Guard touching off a cannon after every score too… loved those days.
I will certainly be at Jeld-Wen field at 5pm this Saturday to support the local team.
PSU is the new Boise State! Remember the Pokey Allen days?!

  19. I’m not saying anything that hasn’t been said already, but in true Jack-fashion I must weigh in.

Playing Nicholls State at the end of the year doesn’t seem to help us unless we need one more win to go to a bowl. Would this game then be our senior day? Or just start all the scrubs to get them game experience, or do an aerial assault game to see if we can get Mannion some kind of yardage record.
To be honest, if we’re that close to being bowl eligible then that means it’s a crappy bowl that I’m sick of going to… yes, I’d rather stay home than go to another hurricane bowl in Vegas (Beavs basketball team playing in the area not withstanding) or sit in the expensive rain of the San Francisco.
I’ve never been to El Paso and that might be my chance to score a donkey show across the border but I can do that in Tijuana or Nogales much cheaper anyway.
Anybody have a good reason to play the game at the end of the year that I haven’t thought of?

  20. This Portland State offer is a great example of an athletic department seizing an opportunity. Those of you who were deriding UO for selling their tix on Groupon take note. PSU is offering tix for free just to get people in the stadium because they know the value. They’ll fill seats that were going to be empty anyway, sell more concessions, and expose their program to a bunch of local football fans who have probably otherwise skipped over them.

  21. Obviously this helps our Strength of Schedule component in the BCS standings. Good move on BDC’s part. This could be the difference between the NATTY and going to the Alamo bowl. There can be no other reason.

    • Sarcasm? Because I hate, nay, loathe the phrase natty!!! It’s the fucking national championship game!!! Natty is the nickname you give to a girl who is called Natalie!!! It’s fucking feminine!!! Ok, my rant is over.
