There Will be More Games like Saturday’s

By rationalizing these losses as one time events and by fearing change, boosters have guaranteed more results like Saturday’s.

There will be more FCS loses.
There will be more blowouts vs spread offenses.

Nothing will change; there will only be the illusion. Job descriptions/titles will be reworked, and the parts shifted around, but it is all to give the illusion of change while maintaining the status quo.

You reap what you sow, and by replanting the Riley/Banker seed we are guaranteed that weed continues to grow.

I fear 28 more years of Banker more than anything from the past.

  1. In almost a masochistic way, I hope Hawaii beats OSU next weekend. As much as I hate saying that, I feel the only way for anything to change is if there’s a major melt down. Granted there was one a couple seasons ago but everyone chalked it up as just a single bad year. Perhaps if there’s another, we can finally go after Riley to change things. It grows tiring watching us look like fools against spread offenses. It’s only going to get worse.

    • Yes, people will say it’s being the anti-fan to think like this, but to sacrifice some short-term pain for long-term gain probably makes that person an even better fan. There are a lot of analogies to this in day to day life. Maybe I will make a post about it at some point because it’s an interesting thought and viewpoint.

  2. The Canzano column has a chance to be a game changer. Nothing this high profile has ever appeared in the “main stream.” Not that you want to, Angry, but you should feel totally vindicated at this point.

As to this week’s game, it really does present one of the most dramatic moments in recent OSU football history. IF things dont’ go well early there will be a melt down in the stands; though I understand some folks have already started a boycott.

    • Thanks.

The Beavs will BLOWOUT Hawaii. I am predicting it right now. Why? Because that is how this ship sails. As the seat warms the coaches pull off something to cool it down. We will see this pattern forever.

      • I still maintain the Canzano column is the provervial tipping point, and predicted it yesterday. Either things change, or there will be a change in the coaching structure; at the top or otherwise. Regardless, it will be the EWA game and the Canzano column that future historians will cite, though, it is equally true that Canzano appropriated his whole argument from you.

        • I don’t think it will be a game changer because you see the same two sides arguing in the comments. The guys who bury their head in the sand and the guys who see reality yet can’t do anything about it. Nothing has changed; it’s just being discussed openly instead of here.

But I don’t see anyone saying “hey, you have a point and I changed my mind, Banker does need to go.” Instead it’s the Pollyannas and Cassandras digging in and defending their viewpionts. Nothing has changed. That piece is like a guy farting in a library. It’ll make a brief ruckus over the political incorrectness but at the end of the day people will still hold in their farts while in quiet, public places.

  3. It is less about the assistant and more about the head man. He sets the agenda, sets the standards, and determines the means and methods. But why were no assistants kicking and screaming about lack of preparation and scrimmaging? Why does the head guy need to review film before figuring out what went wrong? The head coach needs the film sessions because he is only semi familiar with the nuts and bolts of the Beaver operation and needs the deputies to provide detailed analysis during the film sessions. A CEO head coach really is not knowledgeable about the details of play, and may not really know strengths and weakness of second tier subordinates (players). The clue is clock management, or lack there of. He has little direct responsibility for any nuts and bolts aspect of the game. Subordinates are tasked with the details. It worked when OSU needed an image makeover after years in the wilderness. Image crafting is not what the Beavers currently need. They need an engineer and not a marketing specialist.

  4. This is about the only real platform where you can voice a candid opinion so I thank you angrybeav. Like many, I subscribe to some OS pay sites but I think I’m done. Too many Riley homers that defend and say the same old crap and they actually do it in a condescending manner. Sorry to moan.

  5. How would we go about researching other programs who have been in similar situations that we fans currently find ourselves in? Is it all about money? Is getting donors to tighten their purse strings the quickest, most effective way to send Ed Ray and/or BDC the message that we want change? What methods have other schools used?
Think of programs like ours, how would they react, seriously, if they experienced these happenings? I guess the answer is some programs just accept it and slowly slide down the ranks (just like Canzano stated), and other programs force change. So… how do we force change?!

    • I think it takes an AD with balls. Chris Hill at Utah got rid of fan and player favorite Ron McBride after 10 plus years of ups and downs and maddening losses. The 5-6 season that got McBride fired could have actually become 6-6 but Hill backed off of a game against Weber St, so that McBride would have a losing season again (Weber offered to play the Utes towards the end of the season and Hill nixed it).

Cincinnati got rid of Rick Minter after a decade of inconsistency also. Both programs did reach unprecedented heights after making the changes.. Southern Miss got rid of Jeff Bower who I believe never had a losing season in 17 years a few years ago and their results have been mixed. I guess the theme is that the AD’s knew inconsistency when they saw it and after giving ample time to reach higher benchmarks they were courageous enough to pull the trigger on well tenured head coaches. Mediocrity should never be rewarded.

    • Look, you can only do what you can do. Bemoaning the perceived prejudices of the heavy hitting donors is whining and wimpy. First thing that needs to be done is to identify other programs/models that have similar characteristics but are consistently successful. Discuss and argue them here. Identify the common ingredients that lead to success. This will lead to answers that the administration can’t avoid. I remember many years ago living as a Peace Corps volunteer in a poor little country. the attitude of the citizens at the time was “Poor us, we are small and have no money.” The country was virtually cut off from handouts from the USA for a period of time and had to develop its own self sufficiency. It opened its economy to be the freest in the world. Short term results were harsh. Today it is an economic powerhouse, but it still has problems to overcome. Yet it is consistently excellent and is still a small little country. Beaver expertise in ag, forestry and fisheries helped it grow.

  6. Stop buying tickets and going to the games. For those with season tickets tell them your reasons why you aren’t renewing. Send an email to DeCareless and Ed ray telling them those same reasons why you won’t be renewing. Until the masses start doing this nothing will change

  7. I think something that is being missed in the analysis is that Riley is calling plays again this year. I just listened to his post game pressed and he was asked who is calling plays and he said he was. When asked what was said to the defense at halftime Riley said he was with the offense and didn’t specifically know. What good is an O-coordinator who doesn’t call plays? This also keeps Banker being fully in control of the defense, which is not what we need.

Riley is a decent play caller, but that isn’t his job.

    • Riley was with the offense??? What the hell for? He needed to go and SCREAM at the defense……throw a damn tantrum…..threaten to withdraw half the scholarships…….do SOMETHING to fire them up.

But not our Riley. Guy is WAY too detached.

Yes, I am also hoping for another 3-9 season…..its the only thing that will shake this up.

      • Careful what you ask for. We need Riley calling the plays for offense. Have you seen how incapable langsdorf is? I wonder if langs had a part in the 3 & outs… I’m curious if any coaches lit up any players since most of the d deserved a good chewing. Where was the fire? Who brought the fire last year? Poyer, Castro, seumalo, or unga? Y no spy? Did skotte even play? Shoot me.
