Quote that Reminded Me of Riley and his Beavs

143

Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn’t go away. -Phillip K Dick

On the quote:
“One day a girl college student in Canada asked me to define reality for her, for a paper she was writing for her philosophy class. She wanted a one-sentence answer. I thought about it and finally said, “Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn’t go away.” That’s all I could come up with. That was back in 1972. Since then I haven’t been able to define reality any more lucidly.”

The quote relates to the thread below; that there will be more games like Saturday’s.

    • Just a recap here:

Fat shirtless guy on the sideline with a chainsaw.

      Lose to an FCS school.

Really, really, really, really bad “rap” about some skeezy white trash stereotype of loggers (?) using a chainsaw?

      Lose to an FCS school.

Methinks the great Beaver in the sky is trying to tell us something.

Now I’m going to go derive some explanation for my new found faith and how that relates to reality. It will possibly involve a divine book and door to door peddling of some sort.

      • Wait… Randy may not have been shirtless. I may have just averted my eyes too quickly because I had already seen enough.

At least he was a real logger. It was still a really bad idea. But “genuine” gets some points.

      • When that song strated cranking and came up on the big screen at Reser, most of the crowd was stunned, even, seemingly, the student section. They did show 6-8 people cranking it though, so there’s a win, I guess. Although the total blank stare from the blue hairs in my section made it worth while.

        • Yeah, if the goal was to get everyone standing around starring at each other not knowing what to do then it was “a great success!”

Kind of an Andy Kaufman moment…

  1. Riley still is not allowing live tackling in practice despite last saturdays attempt to get thier first win of the season. My thinking on this is stupid:

    1) by not live tackling, you don’t allow your offensive players to learn/re-learn how to take a hit/hard hit in practice speed. So you will leave yourself with more room for getting hurt in a game due to the differences in speed of the game.

    2) The defense can’t practice playing hard. If they can’t hit(main purpose in football), then what’s their motivation to go all out in practices just to have to slow down at the last second or RUN PAST the offensive player?! Why do you think our DL over pursued in the game?! It’s not because of not playing their assignment, it’s that they’ve been practicing to run past the QB and just touch him. Which creates TERRIBLE angles and reverts those to memory for the Defense.

    3) football is 80% mental 20% physical. In practice, go at a fast walk instead of running? Find an alternative rather than disregarding it all together.

    • Not sure how many other programs go with full-tackling during the season. I would be good to know before conclusions are made about this being an extension of Riley being an uber-wuss. The issue in the EWU game was that no one was around to tackle the guy, not so much that tackles were missed.

      • There was a story in the Tacoma paper today stipulating the Huskies had two full contact scrimmages in camp. This was within a context of Wilcox, the DC, being disappointed with all the missed tackles in the game against Boise. Which is sadly ironic given the OSU situation.

  2. Read that in the first half Riley left 3 timeouts on the board….all of that defensive confusion, EWU scoring on nearly every possession, and no timeout to regroup or try to get them off of their roll?

Does he get to redeem unused timeouts somewhere in Corvallis? Free watch battery replacements at the local shop?!?

My brother wants to see the UW game; not sure I could stomach that with the pace they’re playing now, and Banker’s liabilities.

  3. DJ Welch/Alexander in pads now and feeling good, Josh Mitchell still sitting out.
Practice w/o hits may be ok, but I hope DJ is not put into a game before being completely healed, really don’t think he will be needed against UH, but if Seumalo isn’t able to help the run game, who knows?

  4. Something that occurs to me is that the offense, which looked great against a D2 defense, might start letting off on the gas, figuring that if the defense is going to be shit, why should they put out. You put up 46 damn points, and lose….why work so hard?

Riley needs a blowout, shutout to redeem the situation. Conference play is going to be tough.

  5. Week 1 games – Offensive time per Play stats:

    Oregon 00:17
    CAL 00:18
    UCLA 00:19
    WASH 00:21
    WSU 00:21
    HAWAII 00:22
    EWU 00:24
    ARIZONA 00:25
    USC 00:27
    OSU 00:28

    GO BEAVS!

    • This matters why? Score on most of your possessions and stop your opponent from scoring on theirs and you win the game. Longer TOP should keep your d fresh and wear the other teams d out. 46 points should win every game. Just don’t suck on d.

  6. Ed Ray is being strongly considered to take over for Gee at tOSU. The school and Ray have mutual feelings for one another. President Ray was not in Corvallis this weekend for the home football opener, and instead flew into Knox County, Ohio on Friday evening.

        • I saw Ed Ray speak at graduation last year. Canned speech. I know that he has done well at Corvallis, but I am suspicious of any aparatchik of the NCAA. I have slightly known (thru work) the last two Presidents of our local college. The foreign born guy was always on campus and on a first name basis with students, professors and janitors. The American is never here, does his work thru subordinates, and when here is always bragging about his trips abroad and his important kumbaya get togethers with other members of the privileged class.

        • Prof, so the campus believes he was at the Horseshoe instead of Reser. I got blasted by a homer on another site when I brought this up. “Quit torching ER!” Is it just me? I have a problem with the president of our own University electing to attend another institutions home opener over his own. I don’t give a sh*t if it is his alma mater – terrible perception and bad choice on his part. So we know for sure he was there?

  7. Snell article, says DB’s were chewed out by Poyer. Said they were out of position and gave them tips on how to get leverage on playing in the nickel. Also, read the DB’s were blaming each other and not letting their mistakes go. So, if Poyer could see this 3,000 miles away why couldn’t the coaches?

    • That all reinforces the complete coaching fail. They had three timeouts in the first half and all of halftime to gang these guys up and get them on the same page. Not to mention fucking spring and fall practice.

      • ….and….. when Riley might well have pulled the game out, by applying some coaching and clock management at the end, he didnt. bother…. Coaching failure, for sure.

          • Right….but what is most disturbing to me is that it doesnt take much imagination to see that we need to let them score with enough time left for us to do the same, while running out the clock. So I cant believe Riley doesnt see that……just doesnt give a shit.

Riley does just enough to keep his “good” stature with the admin and polyannas, and will never exert himself enough for a whole season to get a conference title or a BCS bowl….

  8. Reality iis whatever doesnt go away when you stop believing in it…..

Oh, no!! So when we stop believing, or HAVE stopped believing, Riley can get er done, he will still be there……sheeeiiiiit…. …we are doomed….

  9. FWIW – CFN Preview of this weekends game:

    “Hawaii (0-1) at Oregon State (0-1) Sept. 7, 8:00, Pac-12 Network

Why You Should Give A Hoot: It was a solid opening week in the Pac-12 … unless you reside around Corvallis. Oregon State suffered arguably its lowest point in the Mike Riley era, falling to Eastern Washington of the FCS on a touchdown with 18 seconds left. The Beavers were in the same position two years, losing to Sacramento State, and never recovered in what would become a 3-9 campaign. Riley needs to avoid a repeat with a swift recovery in September. Hawaii will be playing its second straight game against a Pac-12 opponent, dropping last Thursday’s opener to USC, 30-13.

Why Hawaii Might Win: The Warriors showed a lot of heart and grit against the Trojans, keeping things competitive into the second half. Their defense, led by LB Art Laurel and DT Siasau Matagiese, prevented Troy’s quarterbacks and skill players from taking the game over. Hawaii now faces an Oregon State team whose defense and psyche are in shambles.

Why Oregon State Might Win: Okay, deep breath. Yeah, it was bad, but the Beavers aren’t as futile as they looked on Saturday. This is a program with plenty of talent on both sides of the ball, and a chance to regroup. Lost in the final score was the performance of the passing. QB Sean Mannion went 37-of-43 for 422 yards, three touchdowns and no picks, hitting three different receivers at least eight times.

Who To Watch Out For: Oregon State couldn’t stop athletic EWU QB Vernon Adams. Hawaii QB Taylor Graham doesn’t present the same problems.

    – The Beavers are getting back one of the Pac-12 top centers, Isaac Seumalo, who missed the opener with an injury.

    – Mannion to Brandin Cooks is going to be one of the most dynamic pitch-and-catch combos all season long. Cooks was unstoppable last week, making 13 grabs for 196 yards and two scores.

    – LB Michael Doctor was everywhere for the Beavers last weekend, but where was DE Scott Crichton? Oregon State needs more production from its best pass rusher.

What Will Happen: Oregon State is set to restore some order after the opening week debacle at Reser Stadium. The good news is that Hawaii presents fewer challenges for the Beavers D than Eastern Washington did. Mannion and the offense will take care of the rest, strafing the Warriors with an array of pretty passes to the wide receivers and tight ends.
    Prediction: Oregon State 45 … Hawaii 17

    Line: Oregon State -27 o/u: 53.5”

Most interesting part to me: “Oregon State suffered arguably its lowest point in the Mike Riley era…”

Was last weekend’s loss really worse than Sac State or others?

    http://cfn.scout.com/2/1323190.html

    • I guess it’s a worse loss in the sense that this team was ranked in the top 25 and predicted by most to be undefeated top 10 going into the Stanford game, and that team of 11′ (although had some juice going due to Katz,James) was built of walk-ons and freshman so expectations weren’t that great to start with.

EWU is obviously a better team then Sac State and will probably go onto battle North Dakota State for the FCS national championship. They have some Pac 12 players/starters that transferred playing for them. They would probably beat Colorado and have a punchers chance at several other Pac 12 teams. That being said, we didn’t stop they’re starting QB on a single series. They rolled up more yards on last years defense that returned 7 starters then the Ducks.

I’d just put them both on Riley’s list of all time terrible. Throw in the Las Vegas bowl vs. BYU and 2010’s loss to WSU where the teams just gave up and showed 0 heart.

    • Was it a ‘worse loss than sac st?’

Yes, based on the expectations alone.

An FBS top 25 school should NOT lose to an FCS school, even if they are highly regarded.

The media attention EWU has received this week on every sports radio show, tv and internet venue says so too.

Banker sucks and this team in general wasn’t prepared properly. Truly an embarrassing display.

      • Plus….. given the expectations by the players for a good bowl, even talk of aiming for a BCS bowl., a loss that should have been a win has tossed a monkey wrench in those dreams, right at the start of the season. It must be really deflating for the players. Thanks a lot, Riley and Banker…

  10. http://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/index.ssf/2013/09/oregon_states_next_opponent_5.html

Per the scribe from the Honolulu paper, “The defensive line was able to crash down and bracket the USC’s offense. While UH wasn’t able harass either USC quarterback, it did protect against screens, quick throws to the flats, and stretch runs to the perimeter.”

If Riley sees this on film, will he adjust his plan and cut back on screens and flat passes? Will he eschew the fly sweep and still establish a run game?

    • Fuck that!

      And fuck you!

We don’t need this shit. My father might like it… never mind.

He was an athlete there in the late 60’s. And he gives less than one shit about this.

        • Is Lancaster an “Avenue?”

Yeah, he was there in the late 60’s. It’s always nice when we beat them at anything. Then again, it sucks when we lose.

      • Most people give less than one shit about your posts. What a fuckin’ know-it-all bloviating bullshitting blowhard! In addition, an occasionally untruthful BBB. Such as the time your “friend” at the UO AD told you it was the Ducks who actually backed out of the Kansas State opener. Those of us that really do have friends with high connections at UO(from my grad school days) got many laughs when I informed them of this. Just one example would be my good buddy the Hall of Fame NFL QB informing me how totally full of shit you are concerning this subject. Why don’t you get yourself something of a life so you won’t have to constantly blog all day trying to impress us with your great “wealth”(or in your case lack) of knowledge. The Marine on here a few days ago has you pegged perfectly. One more thing out of many. Doug Oxsen, whom you’ve described as awesome a couple times on here as if he is your buddy doesn’t know who the hell you are! You have some real issues. Try easing them a bit by shutting the fuck up once in a while.Have a lovely evening Jack.

        • you lost all credibility with this

Those of us that really do have friends with high connections at UO(from my grad school days)

Most of your “connections” probably are high. Put the bong down Bubba

        • Tee hee.

          You’re silly.

Please do tell me. How much did KSU pay Nikegon in order to “back out” of that game?

I’ll wait for your answer. Go ahead and ask your buddies.

          • First of all, reply to Beaver Byte for simply posting the UCLA unis was totally uncalled for and out of line. Secondly, if you’re still mataining that UO asked out of this game you’re the one who’s silly. That is simply not true.

          • Was I comparatively mean to Byte for posting yet another of his infinite “branding” posts?

I guess. It wasn’t uncalled for. But it was uncommonly vulgar. So for that I apologize.

On the Nikegon/KSU series being all Nikegon backing out… since what I said was not that, then I guess we’re good here.

The answer to my question is $0 because both schools had reasons for mutually cancelling the home and home. KSU needed to expand their conference schedule and wanted to retain all home dates for revenue. Nikegon wanted to play at Jerry World the previous year and had to lose a home date to do it. That home date was made up the next year by “backing out” of the visit to UNM and plugging in a body bag game at home.

But see, I don’t think of Nikegon having really backed out of the UNM contract even if they did pay the buy-out for it. It was all a part of the mutual agreement between Nikegon and KSU made two years previous. It was just business.

The joke was that Nikegon fans were going around saying it was because KSU was scared or some such dumbshit idea. It sounded cool to Duck fan, but it was also a complete lie.

          • Oh good…a “I rub elbows with famous people” thread. This pleases Joe Avezzano immensely.

Joe Avezzano’s neighbor’s first name is Linus, and he is your grandson.

Linus Pauling does not have the same cachet as a “Hall of Fame NFL qb”, but it fills Joe Avezzano with hubris nonetheless.

  11. Arizona State is whipping Sacramento St. 35-0 barely halfway through the 2nd quarter. Unbelievable Riley couldn’t beat Sac St. or EWU and has back to back losses against FCS opponents at home to open the season.

Mentioned I liked Justin Wilcox and Gary Andersen as 1A and 1B options for OSU last year. Andersen was not as popular at the time as he was coach of Utah State but was gettable. Now he is at Wisconsin and was considered a good hire for them. Wilcox’s defense looked great against Boise State in a dominating performance and he is a very good recruiter. I chose him as 1A because I thought more of a defensive mindset, a quality recruiter, and younger face for the program that would really sell well to recruits and turn Oregon State into more of a destination program would serve us very well if we gave him a 5 year deal with smart incentives for winning.

Best advice I heard from somebody is for OSU to only grant extensions for Alamo Bowl or better and BCS Bowls are worth 3 year extensions. If we had this deal with Riley instead of New Mexico Bowls being just as effective for Riley’s tenure at OSU then we would be in a thousand times healthier situation then we find ourselves in.

  12. Booing your home team, what do you guys think?
Some people call it classless, and I’ve been witness to boo-ers getting shouted down in the stands at Reser.
Personally I don’t have a problem with it, how else should I voice my displeasure at the lack of effort being displayed on the field? It takes quite a bit for me to boo the Beavs but I’ve certainly done it.

    • Booing your team always rubs me the wrong way. I understand booing a coaching decision, but if you’re on the field, the guy on the team may not be able to discern that the boo was for the coach and not the players. By and large, the majority of the team are busting their butts 100% and shouldn’t be booed. The worst they should get is quiet indifference.

      • Agreed. College football is big boy football. They don’t need to care about your feelings, make sure you get equal playing time, trophies and post game snacks.

I definitely think that the coaches deserve some hearty booing after their lack of effort. Imagine if the entire stadium actually participated. I could actually foresee change in the future.

    • it’s definitively considered taboo behavior; I’ve never hesitated booing bad calls by the refs, and
I’ll boo during the course of play action if it’s within the context of bungled coaching–e.g., time-outs
not called; too many men on the field because Banker has guys sprint 40 yards merely to get in position while the opposing team is already at the line (thrice last Saturday)–that kind of thing. I’ll say this: if things don’t get well Saturday, you’ll hear at lot of booing. As it is, you’ll see a LOT
      of empty seats.

    • Booing kids who are technically amateurs is tough to justify. Booing coaches who do this for a living is different. The problem is that it is impossible to know who the boos are targeting.

  13. Given previous comments about the strength of Hawaii’s D – sealing the edges and not letting things get outside – it will be interesting to see if Riley and Langs take this approach and how it works out:

“Riley talked earlier this week about how “disruptive” the Rainbow Warriors were to USC’s offense, which tallied 192 rushing yards on 45 attempts.

The key, said Langsdorf, will be to bounce outside and get a little more production instead of “burying it up the middle.”

    http://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/index.ssf/2013/09/oregon_state_football_beavers_38.html#incart_river

    • I noticed that too. Does this mean Langs is gonna go right at a strength of the UH D or that he doesn’t believe reports about their ability to contain runs to the perimeter? We’ll see.

Interesting too is Riley saying UH disrupted SC by limiting them to 4.3 yds/rush while Langs says 4 yds is a “manageable” performance.

At any rate, it will be good to have Isaac back in the game, may make “burying it up the middle” more productive. Especially if Tyler Anderson is allowed to carry the ball. I like him and Ward for that kind of hard nosed football.

BTW, Ken Goe (who doesn’t go to practice and relies on Conner and Lindsay’s reports) thinks Isaac is good to go for the balance of the season barring another injury separate from the recent (current?) knee bruise. I hope he is correct.

    • I say knock the best player out of the game….it works for Boise State (see Masoli, and Rodgers a few years back) — too bad we didn’t take a couple of cheap shots on Adams (Riley could have made Sean Martin the hit man — not like it would have made a difference should he have gotten ejected — he would be the hero instead of the goat at this stage). :(

  14. just read that Oregon had school record yardage vs. Nichols and averaged 10.9 yards per play.
Heck that’s only 2 yards more per play than EWA ran up against the Beavs (as if anyone needed numeric confirmation about how bad our defense played).

And for those taking comfort in our 46 points of offense (the de facto oasis this past week for many); anyone notice that ASU scored 42 in the first half vs. our old nemesis Sac State. Now
THAT is effective offensive performance vs. a I-AA school.

    • New side has better seats as far as comfort goes. Your chair will have a back and arm rests, plus cup holders. Old side has bleacher style benches still, as do they end zones.

New side also has better restrooms/concessions/etc.

Only negative of new side, is you’ll likely be facing the sun if it’s a day game (and it’s actually sunny)

Also, the band plays to the old side during half time if you care about that stuff.

    • I can’t make it to the game this weekend if you looking for tickets. I’ve got 2, on the old side. Old aluminum bench style seating. It’s low enough that people do stand the whole game so if your a sitter, I’d recommend going above row 40. Judging by last weekend, the sun will be shining on your back until it goes down.

      • are you gonna give these away, throw in a $20 for fuel and a bottle of choice to ease the pain? Cause if so you’ll still have a hard time getting rid of them.

    • The only advantage the old side has is that it’s closer to the parking lot to escape during halftime to keep your buzz going.
The seating is not as steep either which means someone standing 47 rows in front of you still blocks your view.

  15. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6IMBk0fijjM&feature=player_embedded

Watch Banker at about 4:10, saying maybe he tried too many schemes and that “less is more”; he also puts some of the problems on himself and other coaches. A faint glimmer of hope?

Compare this to Stanford’s DC Derek Mason who also calls for less defensive calls and sticking with basic schemes. Of course, Mason really emphasizes fundamentals….probably does some actual tackling in practice.

Many here have probably already read the article on Mason, he is worth listening to when he says, “”We were trying to be smarter and we were putting our kids at a disadvantage. We had to give our kids a chance to play. Let’s align fast. Lets have less calls. Let’s let less be more. Our guys weren’t mired in defensive calls. ”

    http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball/story/22036654/masons-top-down-defensive-approach-a-big-reason-stanford-in-top-tier

  16. Apparently Ed Ray is NOT on the OSU campus again for the second weekend in a row. He is back in Ohio. Take that information for what you will.

  17. Too much of the media will give credit for beating a Hawaii team as if another clearly expected win makes up for a FCS loss. Tomorrow won’t tell us enough but we will see how much Banker will work to wrap the game and his defense’s performance against a relatively slow pocket passer up in a bow. Don’t think this game is going to prepare the players enough for Erickson and Utah and Banker sure has a long way to climb.

    Beavers vs. Rainbow Warriors:
    http://beaverbyte.com

    • If Banker isn’t motivated now he must have no pride at all. Passed over by UH for their head coaching position and publicly called out by the HC of Utah last season. Can’t believe he will sleep walk through the next two weeks.
Too bad motivation doesn’t = ability.

    • That’s a valid question. Without knowing who is in charge of what during practice and games it’s hard to pinpoint, but it’s obvious that the DBs and safeties were unprepared.

You have to wonder how much of the young DBacks frustration was trickle down from the D Line and Linebackers lack of pass rush and inability to contain runners. I can imagine it didn’t take long for them to start concentrating on the QB running rather than covering their man since he had a free pass thru the D line any time he wanted it.
