When that song strated cranking and came up on the big screen at Reser, most of the crowd was stunned, even, seemingly, the student section. They did show 6-8 people cranking it though, so there’s a win, I guess. Although the total blank stare from the blue hairs in my section made it worth while.

Riley still is not allowing live tackling in practice despite last saturdays attempt to get thier first win of the season. My thinking on this is stupid:
1) by not live tackling, you don’t allow your offensive players to learn/re-learn how to take a hit/hard hit in practice speed. So you will leave yourself with more room for getting hurt in a game due to the differences in speed of the game.
2) The defense can’t practice playing hard. If they can’t hit(main purpose in football), then what’s their motivation to go all out in practices just to have to slow down at the last second or RUN PAST the offensive player?! Why do you think our DL over pursued in the game?! It’s not because of not playing their assignment, it’s that they’ve been practicing to run past the QB and just touch him. Which creates TERRIBLE angles and reverts those to memory for the Defense.
3) football is 80% mental 20% physical. In practice, go at a fast walk instead of running? Find an alternative rather than disregarding it all together.
Not sure how many other programs go with full-tackling during the season. I would be good to know before conclusions are made about this being an extension of Riley being an uber-wuss. The issue in the EWU game was that no one was around to tackle the guy, not so much that tackles were missed.
There was a story in the Tacoma paper today stipulating the Huskies had two full contact scrimmages in camp. This was within a context of Wilcox, the DC, being disappointed with all the missed tackles in the game against Boise. Which is sadly ironic given the OSU situation.
Read that in the first half Riley left 3 timeouts on the board….all of that defensive confusion, EWU scoring on nearly every possession, and no timeout to regroup or try to get them off of their roll?
Does he get to redeem unused timeouts somewhere in Corvallis? Free watch battery replacements at the local shop?!?

Something that occurs to me is that the offense, which looked great against a D2 defense, might start letting off on the gas, figuring that if the defense is going to be shit, why should they put out. You put up 46 damn points, and lose….why work so hard?

I saw Ed Ray speak at graduation last year. Canned speech. I know that he has done well at Corvallis, but I am suspicious of any aparatchik of the NCAA. I have slightly known (thru work) the last two Presidents of our local college. The foreign born guy was always on campus and on a first name basis with students, professors and janitors. The American is never here, does his work thru subordinates, and when here is always bragging about his trips abroad and his important kumbaya get togethers with other members of the privileged class.

I have a problem with the president of our own University electing to attend another institutions home opener over his own. Snell article, says DB’s were chewed out by Poyer. Said they were out of position and gave them tips on how to get leverage on playing in the nickel. Also, read the DB’s were blaming each other and not letting their mistakes go. So, if Poyer could see this 3,000 miles away why couldn’t the coaches?
That all reinforces the complete coaching fail. They had three timeouts in the first half and all of halftime to gang these guys up and get them on the same page. Not to mention fucking spring and fall practice.

I guess it’s a worse loss in the sense that this team was ranked in the top 25 and predicted by most to be undefeated top 10 going into the Stanford game, and that team of 11′ (although had some juice going due to Katz,James) was built of walk-ons and freshman so expectations weren’t that great to start with.
EWU is obviously a better team then Sac State and will probably go onto battle North Dakota State for the FCS national championship. They have some Pac 12 players/starters that transferred playing for them. They would probably beat Colorado and have a punchers chance at several other Pac 12 teams. That being said, we didn’t stop they’re starting QB on a single series. They rolled up more yards on last years defense that returned 7 starters then the Ducks.
I’d just put them both on Riley’s list of all time terrible. Throw in the Las Vegas bowl vs. BYU and 2010’s loss to WSU where the teams just gave up and showed 0 heart.

On the Nikegon/KSU series being all Nikegon backing out… since what I said was not that, then I guess we’re good here.
The answer to my question is $0 because both schools had reasons for mutually cancelling the home and home. KSU needed to expand their conference schedule and wanted to retain all home dates for revenue. Nikegon wanted to play at Jerry World the previous year and had to lose a home date to do it. That home date was made up the next year by “backing out” of the visit to UNM and plugging in a body bag game at home.
But see, I don’t think of Nikegon having really backed out of the UNM contract even if they did pay the buy-out for it. It was all a part of the mutual agreement between Nikegon and KSU made two years previous. It was just business.
The joke was that Nikegon fans were going around saying it was because KSU was scared or some such dumbshit idea. It sounded cool to Duck fan, but it was also a complete lie.

Arizona State is whipping Sacramento St. 35-0 barely halfway through the 2nd quarter. Unbelievable Riley couldn’t beat Sac St. or EWU and has back to back losses against FCS opponents at home to open the season.
Mentioned I liked Justin Wilcox and Gary Andersen as 1A and 1B options for OSU last year. Andersen was not as popular at the time as he was coach of Utah State but was gettable. Now he is at Wisconsin and was considered a good hire for them. Wilcox’s defense looked great against Boise State in a dominating performance and he is a very good recruiter. I chose him as 1A because I thought more of a defensive mindset, a quality recruiter, and younger face for the program that would really sell well to recruits and turn Oregon State into more of a destination program would serve us very well if we gave him a 5 year deal with smart incentives for winning.
Best advice I heard from somebody is for OSU to only grant extensions for Alamo Bowl or better and BCS Bowls are worth 3 year extensions. If we had this deal with Riley instead of New Mexico Bowls being just as effective for Riley’s tenure at OSU then we would be in a thousand times healthier situation then we find ourselves in.

Booing your home team, what do you guys think?
Some people call it classless, and I’ve been witness to boo-ers getting shouted down in the stands at Reser.
Personally I don’t have a problem with it, how else should I voice my displeasure at the lack of effort being displayed on the field? It takes quite a bit for me to boo the Beavs but I’ve certainly done it.
Booing your team always rubs me the wrong way. I understand booing a coaching decision, but if you’re on the field, the guy on the team may not be able to discern that the boo was for the coach and not the players. By and large, the majority of the team are busting their butts 100% and shouldn’t be booed. The worst they should get is quiet indifference.
Well, you gotta be smart enough to know why the boos are coming. If your feelings get hurt because we boo after seeing a fcs school march up and down the field at will then you need to toughen up a bit.

Booing kids who are technically amateurs is tough to justify. Booing coaches who do this for a living is different. The problem is that it is impossible to know who the boos are targeting.
It’s not a problem at all. If you’re screwing up then just assume the boos are meant for you. If you’re giving full effort then ignore it.

Given previous comments about the strength of Hawaii’s D – sealing the edges and not letting things get outside – it will be interesting to see if Riley and Langs take this approach and how it works out:

Interesting too is Riley saying UH disrupted SC by limiting them to 4.3 yds/rush while Langs says 4 yds is a “manageable” performance.
At any rate, it will be good to have Isaac back in the game, may make “burying it up the middle” more productive. Especially if Tyler Anderson is allowed to carry the ball. I like him and Ward for that kind of hard nosed football.
BTW, Ken Goe (who doesn’t go to practice and relies on Conner and Lindsay’s reports) thinks Isaac is good to go for the balance of the season barring another injury separate from the recent (current?) knee bruise. I hope he is correct.
People have brought up the topic before of hitting read option QBs as often as possible, treating them as runners. NFL says treating a read-option QB as a runner until it’s clear he does not have the ball is acceptable; is this true in NCAA football as well? PAC – 12 refs seem so flakey:

just read that Oregon had school record yardage vs. Nichols and averaged 10.9 yards per play.
Heck that’s only 2 yards more per play than EWA ran up against the Beavs (as if anyone needed numeric confirmation about how bad our defense played).
And for those taking comfort in our 46 points of offense (the de facto oasis this past week for many); anyone notice that ASU scored 42 in the first half vs. our old nemesis Sac State. Now

Advice please. Old or new side of Reser, what do you guys prefer and why?
New side has better seats as far as comfort goes. Your chair will have a back and arm rests, plus cup holders. Old side has bleacher style benches still, as do they end zones.
New side also has better restrooms/concessions/etc.
Only negative of new side, is you’ll likely be facing the sun if it’s a day game (and it’s actually sunny)
Also, the band plays to the old side during half time if you care about that stuff.
I can’t make it to the game this weekend if you looking for tickets. I’ve got 2, on the old side. Old aluminum bench style seating. It’s low enough that people do stand the whole game so if your a sitter, I’d recommend going above row 40. Judging by last weekend, the sun will be shining on your back until it goes down.

The only advantage the old side has is that it’s closer to the parking lot to escape during halftime to keep your buzz going.

Compare this to Stanford’s DC Derek Mason who also calls for less defensive calls and sticking with basic schemes. Of course, Mason really emphasizes fundamentals….probably does some actual tackling in practice.

Too much of the media will give credit for beating a Hawaii team as if another clearly expected win makes up for a FCS loss. Tomorrow won’t tell us enough but we will see how much Banker will work to wrap the game and his defense’s performance against a relatively slow pocket passer up in a bow. Don’t think this game is going to prepare the players enough for Erickson and Utah and Banker sure has a long way to climb.

If Banker isn’t motivated now he must have no pride at all. Passed over by UH for their head coaching position and publicly called out by the HC of Utah last season. Can’t believe he will sleep walk through the next two weeks.

If Banker coached a game during the Aztec era he would have been beheaded eons ago. They were smart and only had to deal with bad coaches for a day, not 1/4 of their entire lives.
I despise BDC for allowing this to continue. Banker needs to go.

That’s a valid question. Without knowing who is in charge of what during practice and games it’s hard to pinpoint, but it’s obvious that the DBs and safeties were unprepared.
You have to wonder how much of the young DBacks frustration was trickle down from the D Line and Linebackers lack of pass rush and inability to contain runners. I can imagine it didn’t take long for them to start concentrating on the QB running rather than covering their man since he had a free pass thru the D line any time he wanted it.
I’d also like to add that as much as I like Trent Bray as a coach I saw a couple of critical flailbacker moments last Saturday.

Good get by Larry Scott and just in time for fans to enjoy basically the entire football season. Boost for the money each school will bring in so we can get a new D-Coordinator for next year.
