That was a fun game to watch and they looked good. The only thing that was irking me was the minutes Schafty was getting. He’s too much of a softy on D.
The biggest flaw is people calling the site out when it’s wrong? The blog critical of OSU sports can’t take posts critical of said blog?
I think it’s pretty sad when a site trying to be objective edits posts in order to not look foolish.
Although, I guess I am assuming the critical view is supposed to be objective. If the critical views are emotion based then they are no better than the emotional based optimism that is rampant on other sites.
My point is, this post was not based on any rational arguments. It was simply a “OSU at everything sucks so we will obviously lose!” type post. Lazy, sloppy and dishonest to then edit out the “going to be ugly” when OSU basketball actually manages to play well.
That’s great you don’t think this site is up to your standards, but be sure to keep coming back you fucking care bear. Maybe the pollyanna circle jerk over at PO is more your speed.
I tend to agree with some of this. It wasn’t sad that the edit occurred for the same reason the original post was wrong. It wasn’t an edit in order to not look foolish. It was an edit to not be wrong. It was lazy, but it wasn’t sloppy given historical performances. It was objectively an incorrect sentiment, but it’s not dishonest to edit that sentiment given what it was. Now… if he had gone into some actual analysis and said why it would be ugly then deleted all that… then I would agree.
And let’s be smart about this even in critique. If I’m critical of those who claim to be critical, then I’m a cynic looking at the long game and how I know people will respond and follow sentiments I think they only follow because they’re sheeple. That long game would include angry leaving that original post intact and following it up with a ,”Well now, there might be some hope for this program after all. I was wrong about how I saw this game unfolding.”
That’s a perfect set-up for a reinforcing Lucy Van Pelt type post later in the hoops season. Something like, “Dammit! I got sucked in again, and Lucy took the football away… again.”
I think you’re reading too much between the lines. Criticism and grumbling occurs everywhere whether teams win or lose or are perennial champions or not. Alabama football fans are some of the most hypercritical fans you can find on this earth. They are also considered some of the most loyal and intelligent fans in football. But they complain four hundred times worse over a close win than this site does over a football team who acts like it’s just mailing it in.
The actual topics differ though. And I think you dislike those topics. Guess what… so do we. We didn’t start the fire. So don’t go saying the smoke is our fault. We just know that blind faith in fandom is as stupid as it is anywhere in life.
Murphy’s Law is probably a maxim you would want to apply to what you see as negativity. If anything can go wrong, it will. Where we differ is that I believe that to be a highly optimistic and intelligent outlook. If I know my strengths and weaknesses, then I work on my weaknesses in order to make myself better as a whole. Self-awareness is liberating.
“Rah-rah, our players suck so that makes our coaches great for getting them to not suck more than half the time,” is about as negative as you can get in my eyes. Pollyanna is not a term applied to optimists. It’s a cynical term applied to those who are in denial about their own deficiencies… making them pessimists at heart.
Anyway… I do agree that the post shouldn’t have been altered just for the sake of transparency.
I’ll put this thought out there: people on this page should be careful that they’re not so locked into driving the agenda that BDC must go! so that it clouds their perception. As long as everything sucks about hoops and football, they they’re confirming that. What if it looks like the basketball team might sniff 3rd or 4th in the conference and get a tourney bid? The issue is that people may just stay committed to the notion that basketball sucks so they’re comfortable with rallying BDC to leave.
One win in basketball has given you enough confidence to write things like this, huh? That one win excuses a handful of bad contracts, an AD who makes snide comments like “I guess you learned how to coach” (@Riley, who then forgot how to coach AGAIN), an AD who keeps putting the team in a position to be embarrassed via poor scheduling, etc etc etc. Okay.
I’m sure if they finish 3rd a lot of people who post here will be content (until Bob D locks up CR for 20 years). Point being this isn’t because of one issue; it’s a string of issues that never seem to end, and that he never learns from…
Those would be some of the valid points for his moving on. And while I was at first uncomfortable with people talking about him leaving because of Parkinsons, it was explained to me by someone who brought it up that alone is worrisome because he’s being paid an amount which precludes worry of any kind. It’s unfair to say he can’t care for himself whether he’s healthy or diseased. But when a disease is known to exist it’s fair to insist he doesn’t take time away from his job beyond that he would take when he is healthy.
My father is a booster at both OSU and UCLA. While he sees some of the things angry listed here and thinks the OSU AD job now outpaces Bobby D’s abilities, he still donates to OSU. He will not give UCLA one red cent until Dan the man is gone. So I guess there’s some perspective to be had.
I’ll agree with this. The argument seems to be borne more of vitriol at times. Some posters actually look like they’re Pollyanna trolls trying to be extremist to the point of being silly about it. There are valid arguments for and against Bobby D moving on. Winning and/or losing one or two games shouldn’t fall on either side as a valid argument. I’d like to see a comprehensive discussion rather than emotion-laden burps (or cynical extremist troll posts) from those who are just looking for affirmation.
There are good reasons for some of the things people have used to rail on Bobby D. Wagner’s firing is one of them, but I don’t think some people understand the immense liability issues that were at play during that firing process. They were only whining about how long it took as if Bobby D could have moved more quickly and more decisively. They also forget we were cash-strapped at that time and didn’t know we were going to be flush within two years. That situation and those details are what Bobby D is good at. He’s a bean counter who knows policy and can navigate it thoroughly. He’s not averse to vision, but he’ll crunch the numbers and tell those with vision what he needs from them to make it reality.
All this means is that he’s not a dreamer. He was good for OSU when all we needed was a super-accountant extraordinaire. But the landscape has changed drastically, and he’s still just a super-accountant extraordinaire. I’m not disavowing pragmatism. But I’m also wanting some vision and construction rather than just pragmatism and maintenance.
Is he really a good accountant? He gives the perception we’re broke when that isn’t the case. So he’s either a liar or a bad accountant.
My biggest issue with Bob D is his scheduling and not understanding his personnel, specifically Riley. His scheduling puts the team in a position to look bad. And despite how many times they do look bad, he won’t accept RIley nor the program is ready for those games. The disasters like paying Sac State and EWU 100k for loses is terrible, but those are more on Riley than the AD. I am thinking more like Penn State, TCU, etc. The program is not ready for that stage. So either get the program ready via improvement, accountability, etc etc etc, or don’t schedule those games.
I do take huge issue with the infinite Riley contract, too.
When I started this blog, I actually was pro Bob D. Jack, you and I defended him on several occasions. Like most people on a job too long, he exposed himself and wore out his welcome. Like Riley, he was good for stabilization and whatnot, but these guys have all peeked. The next AD will have to be a bit of a dreamer, and a creative one at that, to take the ever elusive “next step”…
You must not know many accountants. The lack of vision and insistence that one is constantly broke no matter the reality is pretty much the description of a good accountant. They are the biggest penny-pinchers there are.
We did support Bobby D except for the Riley lifetime contract. That was a different world though. And even that contract had some validity in that world despite its lack of vision. That was a world where we had to ask, “Is there anyone better we can get for this kind of money?” That world has given way to one where penny-pinchers are devalued as administrators. And previously conservative moves which wouldn’t harm our future are now rightfully seen as lacking in both vision and (to a degree) honesty.
The one thing I can point to is the proposed construction at Goss. Why does Pat Casey need to yet again take his plea to the boosters in order to get something done for his program? Hasn’t he proven that he can succeed not only with less, but with more? OSU should build his building and ask for donations during and after its construction. They should be giving boosters something tangible and gathering revenues from them with dreams of being a part of a vision the OSU AD has for not only a highly successful coach like Casey, but also for the future of OSU baseball.
But we’re still stuck in the old ways, waiting for others to help us instead of taking the reins. That’s the difference between then and now.
Can you give some examples of posts by “Pollyanna trolls” where they were “trying to be extremist to the point of being silly about it.” You can even use the search function if you want.
Are you merely referring to posts where people criticize Angry (of which there are obviously quite a few) or are you referring to posts where people suggest/argue some version of “Riley/BDC are infallible and the perfect guys for the job” (what I would call extreme pollyannaism)? Because the Angryannas around here (you included?) seem to conflate the two.
I think many of the folks you and others label Pollyannas exist in the middle ground you refer to in your post. Of course it would not be nearly as fun to agree on that.
FireBDCnow is a suspect. He’s come from nowhere with no supporting statements and posts with vitriol. This is a common “wolf in sheep’s clothing” tactic used on the interwebs. He’s so extremist that his posts smack of some Pollyanna from any other Pollyanna site looking to color the body of this discussion as one which is also extremist and lacking any validity.
He can then show up here as himself or anonymously as some other poster and rail against posts like that as silly, extremist or lacking validity. Or he can just stay on his own Pollyanna site and link this conversation and say something similar there with an air of “shake my head” while he’s the actual culprit.
It’s a troll fallacy as old as the interwebs itself. It’s as dishonest as me posting something under your handle which would take your thoughts and run them to the point of ridiculous. But it doesn’t stop people from doing it. And in my experience, true believers are guilty of this tactic to almost a unanimous degree.
Yes Jeff Perry, we’re talking about you… you slimy jerk.
There is also another phenomenon where true believers have either gained a certain status within their like-minded community, but they begin to see validity in what they previously thought was anti-them, or they reach the bottom limit of what they thought it took to be a loyalist, and they snap. One can live vicariously on “anti-them” sites, and the other will just jump in with both feet. But both have no idea what the actual conversation is because they only lived and thought in one way. So their posts while they try to find reason and their voice can be considered silly and extremist as well.
Those who evolve become reasonable over time. Those remain trolls fail to change because they never did and never will understand the conversation.
Couldn’t be further from the truth for me. I am very anti-Pollyanna and nothing would make me happier than to see BDC fired or resign. I have enough time spent under the BDC regime to feel I have a good read on his serious limitations and just too much insistence on a stale status quo.
I feel like a real good hire at AD could do more than anything else to help Oregon State. I can’t stand Riley;s lifetime contract but I be OK with a new AD evaluating him for 2-3 years without the buddy relationship Riley has with BDC and his assistants.
Robinson despite some poor seasons could have made a good leap with either Cunningham staying or securing Jahii Carson. I am not big on whatifs but there is still reason for some hope that Robinson could get one more right recruit that would make a difference and have OSU basketball more fun again like we see in glimpses like last night. Maybe GP2 and Payton being around more can help. I am much less worried about his deal than Riley’s because there is a known end to it so long as BDC doesn’t get carried away again as he too often as when it comes to extensions.
Riley is only an average at best coach and can be worse and may be trending that way so I really think OSU is not in a great spot going forward. His ability to land good classes will trend a bit lower IMO so there isn’t much to get excited about and there the civil war among the fanbase as far as him will likely continue to fester and grow worse if anything as he has already been here a very long time as it is.
Bottom line is there is nothing that crucial that we need BDC for and he is bad at rallying support among the fanbase and gathering new donors and excitement among the younger generation. Within the next year is an optimal time to have BDC resign or be fired and for OSU to turn on a new leaf from one piece of the Athletics puzzle since we know we are stuck with Riley for a few years atleast most likely and also with Robinson. However, a new AD can change the credibility of the department overall and have these next few years properly evaluated to make good decisions closing out this decade.
Very few seem compelled by the prospect of BDC making another series of decisions at OSU. The department needs to sell more to younger professionals and much less the 60+ crowd it does now. There needs to be a rebirth and regeneration of the department in this respect and a new AD has a great opportunity to accomplish that as well as get fresh ideas about Reser expansion, recapturing basketball as an important sport of pride, and eventually deciding on our next head football coach. Let a new AD work on improving the overall sports culture at OSU and maybe we can get a renaissance with a united fanbase that we already know won’t happen under BDC.
I would suggest you change your handle though. There are those who might see, not take the time to read what you wrote above and dismiss you as a one topic hack. I was certainly guilty of this. You might find yourself pigeon-holed in discussions because of this.
Lack of self-awareness doesn’t only lead to a disingenuous claim of exclusive loyalty and optimism when poor or mediocre performances occur. It also leads to leads to a false sense of entitlement and a lack of humility when success occurs. It’s very Calvinistic.
In other words, it’s simply moronic.
This is why I brought up Alabama instead of… oh… a school who wants Bama.
I got agitated reading the line, so I took it down, because I didn’t want needless agitation.
Each member here has the right to edit their posts, and this is no different. That being said, this is probably the 2nd or 3rd time I’ve ever edited an opening post, and I knew it would bring out the AB critics. I guess part of me likes them.
It will take Angus about 10 games to really get his old self back. He looked sharp in the UP game but was still trying to get a feel for things yesterday. I liked what I saw from Gomis and Nydai from the short time they were in there. Olaf has to quit being soft and become more confident with his shot. Good to have Collier back!!
Don’t be fooled. BDC and the top AD staff must go. I am not fully on the train to fire Riley and Robinson. Every coach has strengths and weaknesses. Where the BDC staff is continually failing, is in recognizing the obvious need to supplement the head coaches blatant weaknesses with assistants who are known for strengths in those areas. It’s so simple, that only an incompetent/lazy bunch wouldn’t make these changes.
Furthermore BDC and staff, are consistently misses opportunities to set our programs up for success. From contracts, to schedules, to game time input, to ridiculous costume redesigns. It goes on and on. If it can be screwed up via complacency, count on the AD staff to go above and beyond with those mistakes. I wish we had a thinking AD staff that strategically could set our teams up for success.
You miss on who has the final say. There are discussions about all this during appropriate periods during the year. Future revenue opportunities are seen by many within the AD, but current money issues rule every decision… which turns them into perennial money issues which rule the future as well.
It’s very early in the season so I’m reserving judgment. Didn’t they play Kansas very tough last year and we thought Starks was going to be a world beater? I’m skeptical that Nelson and Collier can have those kind of games consistently.
Here’s what impressed me, I thought the team played very smart for a huge portion of the game. No ill-timed Joe Burton no look pass into two defenders, no quick Starks fall back three from 27 feet away. No Jared Cunningham driving aimlessly down the lane with no plan other than to try to draw a foul. They played smart last night and they won.
They did play smart ball. And that was sort of a surprise. They still made some mistakes when faced with pressure or when trying to do too much. But most of them were frosh mistakes made by frosh. Angus was the only player (at 1-3) who shot under .500. You don’t do that by taking poor shots. We were 5-8 on treys, and two of them were poor shots (Berto’s and Cooke’s were both out of range, out of synch and forced), but there were no more than that. Previously we would be 5-20 with many poor decisions and zero confidence in the good decisions. It really helps to play inside-out ball. And that we did it against another really long team on their floor was pretty impressive.
We’ll see how it plays out going forward. Will they finally understand they have the tools and talent to succeed if they play with aggression and confidence?
Btw… did anyone else catch the tOSU@Marquette game on Saturday? That was probably the worst game I have ever seen… in my life… on any level. Maybe the second ASU game in Coach Rob’s first year was close. But at least we were trying to keep the scoring down on both ends in that season. I thought I was tuning in to see the #10 team take on the #17 team in the nation, and it looked worse than us losing to TAMU CC.
Spot on statement there. Especially when you have the size to do that. If this team is jacking up more than say 7 to 10 three’s a game, that’s a problem.
One last thing. I cringe every time Olaf is in there. Slow and cannot defend. Having him guard someone on the perimeter is a recipe for disaster. He is a one trick pony (Tajaun Porter anyone) and not a very good one at that. Wasted schollie imo. We now return you to your regularly scheduled beaver lovey dovey fest following an unexpected win over Maryland.
LoL , I was thinking the same thing throughout the game yesterday. Where was Joe zinging passes right by guys who weren’t expecting the ball at the time, only to see it sail out of bounds? I missed the commentators calling him a Charles Barkley/Magic Johnson hybrid.
He really did have a knack for passing, although some were ill advised. Too bad our guards can’t see the same things. Joe was entertaining and frustrating.
I gotta say, Burton did make some beautiful passes. But at the same time he made just as many boneheaded plays. And I do not miss his “drive in under the basket too deep, behind the backboard and try to flip in in there shots” that missed badly 9 out of 10 times. He played too out of control too much. I don’t miss Burton. At all.
Beavs got to meet Obama again yesterday. Makes getting blasted by Maryland totally worth it. At least it looks better to get beaten by Maryland than Howard, which would likely happen too.
Blasted.
Have you blocked out Towson, which pivoted off their oregon state game into a best ever NCAA men’s basketball turnabout? BTW, Luke Murray is now with the University of Rhode Island.
thinking about a full money dump on Maryland at 13.5

Still embarrassed?
regardless of today’s result. BDC still needs to go. I’d be more than willing to bet that he doesn’t finish out his contract.

where do I go to sign up for the bring Gary Williams to Corvallis train?
Ben Howland
rick barnes?
I doubt OSU would pay any of those guys even if they wanted to come. And they certainly don’t wanna come
rick barnes?

Barnes would not leave Texas for OSU
he might get fired

Where’s Brandt?
That’s true. Brandt’s injury was the reason last year supposedly fell apart, but he’s hardly playing against an ACC team? CR has the Moreland fall back this year.
Two quick fouls early put him on the bench.
Its nice to watch bigs not named Burton
Although that Gomis pass was Burtonesque
He was our most consistent player last season.
OSU has been guilty of a couple of lazy passes.
Did that shot count? Clearly after buzzer
What’s the score?
41 – 38 them
should be tied @ 38. Watch, we will lose by 3 or less now. It’s the luck o the beavs as Angry calls it
someone from the OS coaching staff better tell the officials to review that. I thought all of those end of half/game shots were automatically reviewed. Clearly was still in his hand when the red light came on.
They did, said it counted. Was a bad call.
HORRIBLE FUCKING CALL. OMFG! CLEARLY was still in his hand

BDC sitting at home saying ‘nice shot’. Could care less that video evidence shows ball was clearly in players hands well aftwr red light came on and clock showed 0.0. 41-38 Maryland. They got a 3 at the buzzer that shouldn’t have counted. OSU playing well, and mAryland making some mistakes.
They fixed it
they finally got it right. 38 all, start to the 2nd half
Thank you AC Green. They fixed the call. FU BDC!!
Holy Shit! 8-0 run to start the 2nd half.46-38 Beavs. Who is this team and what have they done with the real beavers?????
Beavs outscore MD 8-0 to start 2nd half. Up 8. Why do they have to fuck with us?
It sucks to get into a game and watch home cookin take over
Waiting for the Riley-esque “let’s go conservative guys” to kick in at any moment.
Beavs dominating this half
Believe me, I want to be wrong in the worst way. OSU has done this to us before. Remember both the CW games last year?
same here but I’m with you. My beaver pessimistic side is just waiting for the epic monumental collapse.
So far Gomis has my hopes up.
I’m going to quote Pat Casey and say that if Maryland wins this game, they will have to take the jerseys off our backs. That’s exactly what I would tell the team right now.
well, here we go. Under 4 timeout and a 6 pt lead. Still expecting them to find a way to lose this game.
I wish CR had substituted Gomis for Brandt. BWDIK
How good is Maryland actually supposed to be this year?
Don’t know but I’ll wager they were taking the Beavs for granted.
I don’t care.

Picked fifth or sixth in the ACC depending on whose list you look at. Also picked to be better than a bubble team for the dance.
Holy shit they actually pulled I off! Nice win
Nice. Good work Beavs.
90-83 final. Good job tonight beavs
I don’t know, but it was a good win against a well-known team and I’m happy to say that I will gladly eat crow as I chalked this one up as a loss. Still want to see BDC gone though!!

ESPN win never hurts…glad I bailed out and took equal amounts Maryland -13.5 (L), and Maryland over 82.5 (Putback with 1.5 left to W!) I’ll take that split everytime….
Even better was that OSU had more points in the paint and made more free throws than Maryland despite having more turnovers and fewer rebounds.
Eastern Washington up 9 at Washington at half…hope they close the deal
they didn’t
Wow, they won. Never saw that coming. Collier played great.
Rodents in the BCS! Goph’s at #25. Beavs beat Maryland on the road in hoops? I need to buy a lottery ticket.
Dez Wells scored 23 for the Terrapins (1-2), whose 30-game nonconference winning streak at home ended.
Did not know that! Makes the win even sweeter!
http://scores.espn.go.com/ncb/recap?gameId=400502683
also read it was the beavs first win over an ACC team since 1999.
Luck O’ the… Terrapins?
That was a fun game to watch and they looked good. The only thing that was irking me was the minutes Schafty was getting. He’s too much of a softy on D.
I guess Schaft was in there becasue of Brandt’s foul trouble? He doesn’t look anything like a D-1 player on defense, but he did hit a big three.
I like how the text of the OP was edited… It used to say “3pm tip. gonna be ugly” or something like that…
Biggest flaw of this site is that it’s overly negative for the sake of being contrarian.
You’re right, my email says:
“3pm tip.
This is going to be ugly.”
I guess Angry was just trying out the new “edit” features?
I got thumbed down for that? Sheesh…..tough crowd….
Nope, the biggest flaw of this site is people like you who give a shit.
I think you just made his point. Well done.
Amen, GOBeavs.
Point being this isn’t because of one issue; it’s a string of issues that never seem to end, and that he never learns from…
I’m not sure that’s what he said. Not surprising the message was missed though (sort of his point in the first place I think).
Sorry Jack,
Couldn’t be further from the truth for me.
Well said. I wrote that I suspected you before I scrolled up and saw you supported a weird claim with an Olive chat. That was a good find btw.
Thanks for the post. It does make your position very clear.
I would suggest you change your handle though. There are those who might see, not take the time to read what you wrote above and dismiss you as a one topic hack. I was certainly guilty of this. You might find yourself pigeon-holed in discussions because of this.
Am I right NCAA viOlation?
It’s also why I wish I had never chosen “BeardedBeaver77@_____.com back when I chose my email address 14 years ago. Now I’m stuck with it.
I’ll also say this.
Masochism is an OSU fan’s reality?
That’s a question?
This makes me so happy. What a clown.
I bet it does.
did it make you so happy you had a boner?
It will take Angus about 10 games to really get his old self back. He looked sharp in the UP game but was still trying to get a feel for things yesterday. I liked what I saw from Gomis and Nydai from the short time they were in there. Olaf has to quit being soft and become more confident with his shot. Good to have Collier back!!
noticed that too…I’m on record of losing money on my initial wager for this game. If you proffer an opinion on a game result, you should own it.
I was wrong, Angry was wrong…good to be wrong if/when the Beavs succeed.
I predicted a loss too. Safe to say we were all wrong. Is it too late to edit my post?
CR himself probably thought we’d lose
No biggie being wrong on this one, good job beavs :)
CR still hoarding TO’s. Even the Lady Beavergopher was yelling at the TV to call a TO when the twelve point lead went to three.
“It really helps to play inside-out ball”
Spot on statement there. Especially when you have the size to do that. If this team is jacking up more than say 7 to 10 three’s a game, that’s a problem.
One last thing. I cringe every time Olaf is in there. Slow and cannot defend. Having him guard someone on the perimeter is a recipe for disaster. He is a one trick pony (Tajaun Porter anyone) and not a very good one at that. Wasted schollie imo. We now return you to your regularly scheduled beaver lovey dovey fest following an unexpected win over Maryland.
I miss the Burton triple axel, double solchow, fall away, triple flip shots. Dude had style LOL.
At all.
