  1. Zona up on the ducks 28-9 at halftime. And FCS Georgia Southern just beat Floriduh 26-20 guaranteeing the gators of a losing season. My heart bleeds.

  2. Mabye the Beavs can beat Oregon this year afterall. Haven’t watched this game or their loss–have teams figured out the read option or what?

    • Oregon looks soft. If the opposing D lays the wood to them, they will turn it over. DAT, Mariota and Tyner are not durable at all (injury prone). And they lost another RB to an ankle injury (Addison?)

      • Oh, did Byron Marshall get hurt? Tyner looks far from a 5* running back out their. Dcks moved the ball, but also turning it over with fumbles and failing to convert 4th downs. they also are letting Arizona move the ball fairly easily. 28 in a half great.

    • Clear indication that the Kelly era is over. Kelly never let his guys get complacent against a subpar opponent.

Sad thing is, that could have been us. If they beat the Wildcats comfortably this week and Riley brings his A-game next week, we could have caught them offguard and wrangled an upset. This week proves it.

But now they’ll be angry and fired up, and it’ll be a same-old, same-old civil war.

  3. Question from Jill: Coach Leach, Utah scored on two big explosive plays. What will you do about that?

Leach: Well, we just need to stop big explosive plays.

Why do I get the feeling he doesn’t suffer fools gladly?

  4. LMAO!! UO getting its ass kicked! Dont care to go to the Rose Bowl again??…..well, dont worry about it ….

God I hope they dont find some way to pull this out…..

    • not happening. 42-16 with less than 8 minutes left. That loud crashing sound is the bandwagon in Eugene going off a cliff

  5. Mariotas helmet off on sidelines. Soundslike concussion possible. With short week for civil war, he would need to heal pretty quickly

    • Or OSU could end up making the second string look like first team all american..

If the Ducks are hurting and Mariota is out, that’s bad for Riley, because then OSU should compete.

  6. The key? No big plays … no long runs/passes … no quick scores. Well, that and A playing about a perfect game. WAY TO GO, ARIZONA!!

  7. Longest play from scrimage for the ducks was 30 yards.

Best line of the day from my daughter. When I texted her that I was surprised that Huff wasn’t on the sideline crying she replied, “it’s only for the Rose Bowl, no reason to cry about it!”

And Florida loses to an FCS school today. Will miss playing in a bowl game for the first time since 1990.

  8. Duck fans are already jumping off of bridges. My only hope, as a concerned citizen and humanitarian, is that Lane county has enought bridges for everyone.

  9. Just got home from a long ride to find the Ducks got crushed. Fascinating. I wonder how long it is before they call for the coach’s head. I bet it’s started already.

    • Not only are some already calling for the head of Helfrich, one guy on O-live even says, “You can’t compare Helfrich’s sideline demeanor to Mike Riley’s. At least, Riley shows some sign of emotion and excitement during games.”

Others then chime in, saying Helfrich acts like a ” tired and polite administrator observing the game as if he has nothing better to do. ” Hmmmm, sounds a bit like what we’ve seen from our own MR!

  10. This will mark 1st time @WinTheDay has consecutive road losses since 2007 (at Ariz & UCLA) #GoDucks

A repeat of the 2007 Civil War anybody?

  11. It’s a shame that Oregon State hasn’t proven capable of doing any of the things on offense or defense that Stanford and Arizona were doing successfully in dominating Oregon. The Ducks look as vulnerable going into Civil War as they have in years.

I can’t imagine a Chip Kelly led Oregon team looking anything like they did today against Arizona. Will be interesting to see if Mark Helfrich can keep up the level of success they’ve had over the next couple of years, or if they’ll start trending back towards the Mike Bellotti level of success.

      • Why do you say that? Wulff was 9-40 with a max of 4 wins in his career.

Leach is a .620 career win %, and 10 straight winning seasons.

I don’t see why you’d diss Leach and tout Wulff. Leach is using Wulff’s recruiting classes and after one year is winning with them. Once he gets his own guys, I think WSU will be pretty good (if he doesn’t abuse someone and get canned first).

        • I’m not saying Wulff was a better coach, but I am saying that that team took a significant step back in the short term. I’m pretty confident that Leach has more upside, due to recruiting prowess if nothing else.

But Wulff in 2011 was right on the cusp of something good. He inherited a trainwreck, and showed steady year over year improvement. I would have expected a 6-7 win team in 2012 had he stayed on. And maybe even more improvement this year

Leach wasted no time in alienating a lot of players, including their best player in Marquess Wilson, and Jeff Tuel as well. He benched/suspended a lot of talent to make a point. He really didn’t play to the personnel and strengths that he had, instead implementing his own schemes and plans.

He’s recruited well and as you said, I expect him to continue to improve as he’s able to bring in more talented guys, and guys that fit his schemes better. But still, there’s no question in my mind that they were far worse last year than they would have been.

          • Specifically, Wulff’s players played hard and gave 110%, all the time. Even when they were an awful 1-2 win team they still came out fired up every game, and usually could hang in for anyone for at least a quarter before their dismal talent exposed itself. I remember admiring that compared to a lot of our flat, uninspired Beav performances.

Compare that to the 2012 Cougs. Remember that game where Leach called out his whole team as a bunch of zombies?

          • Not saying Wilson was the victim. But Leach obviously didn’t care too much about making things work with their best player.

And even if kicking Wilson off needed to happen, you can’t tell me losing him didn’t cost them at least a game or two, in and of itself. Personally, I’m most surprised that Jeff Tuel was underutilized so badly. For many years he was the only good player on that awful, awful team. And he is in the NFL this year.

          • The only thing Leach was trying to do was to get rid of the loser mentality in pullman. If that meant roster turnover, so be it.

          • But that’s it exactly…WSU did NOT have a loser mentality in 2011. Those guys fought like maniacs. Angry even commented on that more than once.

It was the 2012 Cougs that appeared to have a loser mentality.

          • In 2010 and previous to that they fought hard. In 2011 they were dysfunctional and there was a ton of infighting on the team. Oddly it was Wulff’s best year. But it came at the cost of his team absolutely imploding. And a 2012 Wulff led Wazzu would have resembled a Jay John led Beavs team… with a bunch of police blotter appearances.

          • I prefer that approach from a coach.

This is what we do, and it’s my way or the highway. This is our identity, buy in 100% or I’ll fuckin bench your bitch ass and play someone who wants to be part of this team.

Chip Kelly was the same way, and it works in college ball.

          • It may work, but with a team as devoid of talent as the Cougs were, no question it hurt them in the short term.

2012 was “the year” for the Cougs under Wulff, and they wound up having to punt it away with Leach coming on board. In the long term, I think it’ll pay dividends. I think Leach has much higher upside. But I think it cost them a decent season last year.

          • OK, I fact checked and he did not inherit a trainwreck. His first couple years were disastrous. But he was clearly improving and the Tuel/Wilson connection was legit. I stand by them being bowl eligible in 2012.

          • Wulff’s overall 4 year record speaks for itself. 9-40 in 4 years. 4-32 in the Pac-12. In 2011 in his FOURTH year they went 4-8 and 2-7 in conference play. I’ll give you one thing. The 4 wins they achieved that year was one less win than they had in the previous 3. But imo, it didn’t warrant a 5th year. Wazzu wasn’t willing to wait another year and it obvious they made the right choice in cutting Wulff loose and going a different direction.

  12. I think Oregon’s loss today nearly guarantees a Civil War win, as they will be angry, motivated, and not complacent.

That being said, if we win tonight (coin flip IMO) and find a way to pull the upset next week, we’d not only beat the Ducks but also finish above them in the PAC12 standings.

  13. I did mention before the season that Helfrich is not an innovator, the best he could do was manage the systems already in place. We see the result, the end of the Ducks as a national powerhouse. It happened a year before I expected though.

    • I expected them to slowly decline and it would take 3 or 4 years. I honestly did not expect them to lose twice or more this season

    • They’ve lost TWO games. Geezus christ. They’re pulling in good, fast recruits, correct? How about waiting for some consecutive, non – BCS seasons first? I imagine Mariota returns next year (?) because this season is unsatisfying.

Wouldn’t we love if 8-2 was an under achievement for OSU?

All that said, I do think their emotional responses to recent losses is Un Kelly like and could be problematic for them if it becomes a pattern. THEN I think the descent would start.

      • 8-2 was an underachievement for the Beavs last year, and I didn’t like it so much. It was okay, but there was a lot left on the table in those two losses.

  14. fwiw – Eastern Washington barely pulled out a win vs. Portland State. I wonder if EW’s coach would consider coaching at Oregon State – although I fear Riley will fossilize in place.

  15. Think we’ll see any of the “trickery” Riley showed earlier this season? RB passes, throwback to Mannion, etc. or some other unexpected play? Maybe the “bull backfield” with Wynn at FB, Anderson at RB?!?

I’d like to see Cooks in the backfield deep with a pitchout like they did with James Rodgers in 07(?).

Redundantly, I again repeat my request for some carries for Brown….

  16. so let me ask this. Why in the fuck are our defensive backs playing their receivers 10 yards off the line of scrimmage with a QB making his first career start? Can someone explain it to me because I fail to understand this logic.

  17. Start with ST fail and the defense looks like swiss cheese. Sack, incomplete pass, batted down pass, punt. Way to answer the bell offense.

    • Hey! The coach looking more depressed than Tony Soprano didn’t mean anything! He just hates losing and was masterminding those fails as part of his genius game plan.

  18. At some point it is up to the players to step up and compete regardless of what looks to be a defeated head coach and incompetent staff..

They are showing no fight right now.

  19. Fire DeCareLess NOW and have the new AD pick a new head coach!!! Riley is a bad joke and has tanked the last half of the season and doesn’t care with his hopes of a Heart O’ Dallas Bowl. He has hid chances and always fell short. He is getting worse and can’t recruit worth shit. NEXT!!!! Blow up this BDC-Riley crapfest!!!!!

  20. Playing a NW rival at home, and to come out SOOOO flat…… This is ridiculous!!

I guess either the players collect themselves and put up some kind of fight, or this is going to be super embarassing. Of course, Riley is never embarassed…..doesnt care, obviously.

    What a shitty situation.

  21. Did I just see what I thought I saw. It’s 4th down and Riley sends in the kicking them. He’s standing there and suddenly realizes he’s holding some paper in his hand So he starts looking at the paper like WTF is this and then realizes — Oh, we’re kicking.

Wouldn’t surprise me if the only reason he’s holding that paper is because someone pointed out last week that all he was doing was standing there with his hands behind his back (with no paperwork) and the Beavs were on offense.

In other words someone else was calling the plays.

    Langsdork perhaps?

  22. Thanks for the Sun Bowls, but it’s time for Riley and Co. to go. Makes me sad, but this is just depressing this year… and there is no reason to think it will get better.

  23. I haven’t found any bright spot. Special teams…NOT! Offense….NOT! Defense…..NOT! Punting….NOT Play calling…..NOT! Maybe Jessica Mendoza on the sideline….

  24. wow. just wow. I think they’ve mailed it in. Totally quit. Zero emotion. I hope they get booed off the field at halftime and those that paid for their tickets don’t come back. This is utterly fucking pathetic. This is on your head Bob DeCareless you prick. I’ve got better things to do than watch horrible football.

    • This was the first game ever, in 4+ years of writing this blog, that I didn’t waste a second of my life drafting a pre-game thread (usually put these out on Tuesdays). I just had nothing to say after watching that Riley video. The one everyone said I overreacted to….

  25. Screw You BDC! Screw you Ed Ray! Screw you Riley! Cowards, all of them!! FIRE these fools! No accountability!!! Canzano, please fire the final salvo! WE HAVE HAD ENOUGH!!!!!

  26. I flipped over to Boise/SDSU on CBS college sports. 14-7 Aztecs in the 2nd quarter. I’m done watching our joke of a football team this year. I can only hope that wholesale changes are made to the coaching staff when the season is over.

  27. From a UO fan at Olive:

“Just when I think this can’t get any funnier, I realize that the beavos have recruits in the stands. 3* RB Harris Ross, 3* FB/OLB Devante Downs, and 3* OT Kaleb McGary (6’8″ 280). Think you will sign any of them to LOIs?”

  28. BDC and Riley both need to go. Retire, no one else will want them. Not even Willamette. Beyond pathetic. The team has given up on Riley. Wholesale changes need to happen to put an end to this crap. Ed Ray you are a bitch to not fire BDC tomorrow!

  29. I felt that Sark should’ve called a timeout before the punt there. He was smart enough to know the Beavs would hike it with plenty to spare on the play clock though

  30. Put Cody in there. It’s senior night…let the guy play. Mannion is done. I’m so sick of watching him play. Wasn’t the right call to play him over Katz, and he’s only been good against bad teams since.

  31. Curious how what out record in all black units. Games that come to mind: Sac St, EWU, Stanford, a cpl CWs. I know it doesn’t matter but I don’t remember seeing much of a win in the all Blacks.

  32. Finish the half with -1 yards rushing on 9 attempts. 109 yards passing with 2 INT. As bad a half of Beaver football as I’ve seen and I’ve seen alot of bad Beaver football.

  33. God this is disgusting. If Vaz and Vanderveen have any brains, they have left the stadium and gone home.

Cant wait to hear how Riley spins this … The man has given up — no other way to see this.

  34. Kristick Whiffs Again says:

Riley has quit. As much as it pisses me off, he’s DONE. And now that Stevenson has completely grenaded the locker room chemistry, this team won’t follow him anymore. We are lucky Washington isn’t starting Price. With the mood of the players and coaches, it’s basically our beat chance for another win this season.

Interesting. Looking like maybe this dude knew what he was talking about????

    • It’s really confusing right now. I mean the Beavers are not passing the eyeball test athletically against the Huskies right now. In fact, the Huskies look like the best team the Beavers have played all year. There’s something going on psychologically with the Beavs. Riley and staff have lost this team and someone on his staff needs to go at the end of the year as a first step that this is not acceptable. Riley take your pick from your buddies.

  35. I actually hope we lose by 60. Got to shake up the pollyannas. There is absolutely no spinning this performance. We’re healthy. We’re playing to make a bowl. It’s senior night. On national TV. Civil War dress rehearsal. What the heck else do you need for motivation? Where is the fire?

  36. I’m tired of the 28 year bullshit. Kragthorpe had some teams that were competitive and played with heart. Pettibone had some defenses that played with their hair on fire. A bounce here or there and the streak would have ended before Riley and we would not have to be dealing with this “Riley the savior” crap. Riley left the Beavers after two years and Erickson ended the damn streak!!!!!

  37. Ward shows some heart, too little – too late; needed some passion from the entire team early on. As someone said, team passion reflects that of the coach.

  38. Fire BDC and Riley tomorrow!!! Enough of all the uber bullshit. Riley id a joke and BDC is an idiot. This regime is down the shitter. OSU needs a fresh start with new leaders! ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!!

  39. Cooks with a good run after the catch and then they botch the PAT. Comedy of errors. Though it looked like the second string secondary for the huskies.

  40. Zero effort on those two runs. We can say all we want about the coaches, these kids, no, these men have got to act like they have some pride. Grow the fuck up. Zero effort by a bunch of players. I know the coach is ultimately responsible for motivating your team, but you have to show up and do your job.

    • Not if Riley and BDC aren’t doing theirs. They have quit on This regime and tens of thousands of fans that have left don’t blame them. It’s past time for a change.

  41. If anyone is interested, flip over to CBS college sports for a good game. SDSU just ran a punt back for a TD. Tied @ 28, 4 minutes to go

  42. serious question. How did this team manage to win 6 games? They have obviously gotten much much worse over the last 4-6 weeks. It’s perplexing why they have regressed. If this team has quit on it’s coaching staff, the question is why?

  43. Brown is such a better runner. He should have gotten his rookie reps against the cream puffs early in the season and been really solid by now

    • A lot should have happened against the cream puffs. Brown, the run game, the run game, 3-4 defense, Mannion roll outs, the run game, anyone who arm tackled benched for a game, the run game, hurry up offense, the run game, etc.

      • Yeah, but its infuriating to think Brown, though better, is not first string cause of fumbles. This when his first real action is coming in cold on a cold night, down by 50 at the end of the season.

  44. By the way, the stadium shots of a mostly-empty stadium with sleeping fans HAS to be helping recruiting.

    Right along with the score.

Another long run for a td….

Riley may be finally heartbroken tomorrow if not monday after CW.

519 rushing yards for UW…so much for Banker’s resurgence.

    • Who gives a shit if he’s a better runner, the guy can’t hold on to the ball. He dropped it twice in the Spring game, and I thought “he’s not going to see the field”. Now look what he’s done in an actual game.

    • Thanks, Angry. I really needed a chuckle!

BTW, I’m betting Lindsay comes up with an article on “will a win in the CW salvage the season?”. Sure, beat the Ucks and that over-rides all the poor coaching and missed opportunities. BS!

  45. Not really a conspiracy theorist, but the way the defense was playing has me wondering about what’s going on in that locker room. You can’t play football at that level and be that poor at tackling can you?

    • I don’t think the point is to have a name in mind. I think a good AD would have a vision for fielding a competitive team that plays the game well in all three phases, have a well written job description, and facilitate a competitive hiring process.

There are things to like about Corvallis and PAC football. Riley has provided a foundation to build on (minimum bowl qualification) and a creative, aspiring coach would have many reasons to want to coach at OSU and compete in the Pac.

      • Since OSU us stuck with Riley’s contract, I think you are right. Maybe a smart AD would let Riley keep the title in exchange for replacing coordinators and giving the new coordinators control over staff and game management. Let Riley only talk to recruits selected by new coordinators in order to close the deal with his “family” schtick……….not saying Riley is at all phony with the family thing.

BREAKING NEWS: Just heard that Riley didn’t force players to speak to the media and took it on himself to deal with the media postgame. I’ll give him points for that; but not enough to offset the lack of heart shown by the Beavs tonight.

        • wow. there’s some accountability. Anyone ask him why he stuck with Mannion for so long? Why the poor clock management? Again? Why Banker’s defense gave up 530 yards rushing and still can’t tackle? Oh and yeah, those mindless dolts still clapped after the interview was over.

          • which netted a first down might I add. Is letting the play clock run down too far to get the following play off not poor clock management?

          • since it has been a recurring problem, yes. Everything is on the table with me right now. I am so fucking fed up with seeing the same mistakes made repeatedly. If you or I fucked up at our jobs and made the same repeated mistakes we would have our asses kicked out on the street.

      • I concur. I don’t want BDC involved in any more decisions when it comes to hiring head coaches. Most of his hires have been shaky at best.

      • I DIDN’T SEE BDC THROW ALL OF THOSE PICKS! HELL! I DON’T THINK HE EVEN RECORDED ONE TACKLE!!! WITH THAT PRODUCTION, FIRE BDC!!!!!!!!

        • BDC has enabled Riley to hire and keep a staff of good buddy friends. It’s all mutual respect on that staff and no one will step on the others toes when a deficiency is apparent. So as Riley said, they go through the whole week feeling really good about their effort and then come game time are shocked at the lack of preparedness. If BDC was out there doing his job, the coaching staff wouldn’t be all buddies, and would approach their jobs with intensity and individual thought. An even better AD would ensure that this staff had individual strengths which balance individual weaknesses.

        • bobby? is that you bobby? If it is why the f* don’t you pack your bags and exit stage left? Imo you’ve f*’ed this program up enough. Time to move on and deal with your physical issues.

Oh, and don’t let the door hit you in the ass on your way out.

      • I’ve always liked Leipold. He should be our next OC. His teams do not fool around.

Since special teams were so special… forever… Leipold could take that $260k salary paid to Read. I think that more than doubles his current salary.

        • I also suggest Scott Stoker for the DC position. I know he’s being paid more in El Paso than he was paid at SHSU, but it’s got to be killing him that his SHSU boys played aTm better than his new hot mess at UTEP.

      • Yeah, I want LL.
Sign a 2 or 3 year deal and just see where it goes.

Troy Calhoun, who is from Oregon, could be had for cheap after the past few down seasons. I think he has 5 good years left in him.

  46. Luck O’ the Beavs….I really think that the Ducks are in the process of slipping a little, but I think that the Beavs are going to slip even more by comparison, so it still won’t be competitive. This season was fool’s gold with those narrow wins over SDSU and Utah.

  47. Good time to hire a new coach. Get rid of BDC first and have new AD go through the process. Wilcox is a reasonable idea depending on what other names stand out. Offer 2 million a year and a 5 year deal with option for early buyout. Wilcox atleast would restore fresh energy into the program and would at worst be mediocre. Possibly though the breath of fresh aur is exactly what OSU needs and everyone rallies around him or the new coach and we could get an Orgeron like outcome where it is far healthier and we wonder why it took us so long to move on and so grateful to be doing something new and having newfound success. It’s time for a change. We need a leader capable of rallying the entire base, capturing new fans and preparing to fill an eventual upgraded stadium. No way is that Riley. Wilcox could be had for 1.8 million with a annual slight increase. Well worth the shot under the terms outlined above.

  48. Joe Avezzano took this opportunity to personally witness his first Beaver game in two years. Nice seats on the 40, 13 rows up. Partied with old friends on a beautiful day. Saw some UO folks talking about how they had feelings of harming themselves, things were going good.

Joe will not darken Reser’s door for the foreseeable future.
