You guys didn’t like the last thread? Well Merry Christmas, here is a new one.

Barring any big news/hires I’ll be back Jan 1. Use this as a general thread until then.

Enjoy the holiday break, and remember to spike your eggnog, and if Angry@angry’s siblings post here, please give him an atomic wedgie and kick him in the nuts for me.

I liked the last thread, provoked some good points to consider, I thought.

In regards to the loss of recruits due to the defection of KS: the converse may also be true. Bringing in a good recruiting DC may also cause recruits to ride in on his coattails. One can hope, right?

And a very merry Christmas to all of you.

OK…. Here is my final offer! A 2 for 1 special. Make me the OC and I will throw in a free well established defensive coordinator, to be named later. As it looks like I may be coming into a little unexpected cash soon, we will split the salary.

Address offers to: Cutty Sark ? Serenity Lane, Los Angeles

bcc: jWil ? Parents’s basement Junction City, Oregon

OUCH! FWIW – I’ve found that when bad things happened to me they forced me out of my complacency and into a state where I was willing to evaluate myself and my situation. Anything to get me out of my psychological pain. Speaking for myself I can truthfully say that in hindsight the bad times caused better times to happen which wouldn’t have happened otherwise because of my complacency.

          I’m not joking, btw.

Get a dog. I would say a GSD is a safe bet always. A border collie is the easiest ever because they are so damn smart and loyal. A Vizsla would be the same.

When my guy dies, I’m gonna go American Alsation (Alsation, of course, being the root for GSDs).

Or I’m going to visit the pound every day until I find the dog I know will live happily with me.

Not one peep on the OSU DC search yet. Would like to know if Orlando and GA have spoken. I think Aranda and GA likely have had some contact. Really think it would benefit the Beavs to get someone like Orlando who is very used to working as DC across McGiven as OC. Don’t think Orlando could turn down 750K.

The delay could be due to his prep for the Peach Bowl on New Year’s Eve vs FSU and also Aranda’s Holiday Bowl matchup vs USC on the 30th. Big games for both these targets. Orlando to me is more likely but a perfect start of the New Year would be hearing Oregon State has a deal with one of them to become our DC in the Pac-12.

And what looks to be a very tough schedule next year. Read on a BYU site that they think it’s a schedule that will get them a New Year’s Six Bowl with one loss or even the playoffs if they run the table. Of course, it’s delusional thinking, but as an independent you have to have that type of schedule to be delusional to begin with.

According to that second article, bronco was the D coordinator. Why can’t GA do the same thing? And what is the difference between a head coach calling offensive plays vs. defensive plays? Seems like he could do it and maybe hire a full time special teams coach, or an extra defense coach.

Based on this ESPN scouting report about Handsome Tanielu (Could be a good starter for lower Power-5, Group-of-5 program) which I found on SB Nation. I’m sure glad the Beavs didn’t waste a scholarship on him. Just kidding but it does bring home the fact that currently the OSU DL is nothing better than a lower tier unit. As an aside, on some message boards “we didn’t want him anyway” seems to be the reasoning by some Beav fans when a recruited player decides to play elsewhere. Imo, pretending it didn’t matter as a way of dealing with it is not the way to improve a program.

    http://www.vanquishthefoe.com/2015/12/23/10310532/byu-football-recruiting-snow-dt-handsome-tanielu-signs-with-cougars

    snip
Here is the scouting report on Handsome according to ESPN.com.

STRENGTHS: Thickly built with very good bulk as well as playing strength. Does good job of shooting hands with upper body strength to press blockers and hold ground when he stays low. Flashes adequate lateral mobility to be active between the tackles. Displays good bull rush ability…

AREAS OF IMPROVEMENT: May not be quite as tall as listed. Can give ground when doesn’t win with quickness and leverage. Active with hands as pass rusher, but needs to continue to refine usage… BOTTOM LINE: Tanielu is an active and strong interior DL. Not a real dynamic, quick penetrating presence, but can be stout versus run and work as an interior pass rusher. Could be a good starter for lower Power-5, Group-of-5 program or quickly add quality depth to a higher tier Power-5 program.
    snip

Based on the following excerpt from the same article I’m wondering who else KT will be going after.

    snip
The addition of Tanielu will shore up a position that desperately needed some depth. With the departure of Bronson Kaufusi, BYU needs all the defensive line help they can get. Logan Taele has been granted another year of eligibility and Travis Tuiloma will return but beyond that the Cougars will be relatively inexperienced up front.
    snip

Noticed one of our coaches started following Stanford DL coach Randy Hart. Not saying he’s a candidate for DC, but he does have ties to Urban Meyer. (I know, a stretch, but still) Only problem is he’s 68 years old, so not sure how much he has left in the tank for coaching. Has a ton of solid experience at DL and DC. Just wanted to put his name out there since we have heard nothing regarding the coaching search.

My list of favorite DC candidates in order
    1. Dave Aranda- Would be a huge get and make our defense a lot better.Probably much better than Sitake. But would likely leave in 1-3 years.
    2. Todd Orlando- Good coach and seems to be a good recruiter(might be Herman not him). Would be a good get.
    3. Joe Saleve’a- Good DL coach and great recruiter. I would like to see what he could do with our DL and LB commits.
    4. Kevin Clune- Good LB coach. Coached Bobby Wagner and a few other good LBs at Utah State. Not sure if I want him as our DC. He’s the DC at Utah State now… unsure if he would want our LB coaching job.
    5. Justin Wilcox- Was once considered a good young up and coming coach. Good recruiter and he’s from Oregon.Still pretty young.

Once OSU football starts recovering from his wake of destruction, my anti-Riley passion will diminish. Maybe.

During the press conference Holmoe said, paraphrasing here, he knew what it was like when a person is given their first HC job and he was going to do what he could to help KS with the transition. Hiring Lamb with his 8 years experience as a head coach might be part of Holmoe’s way of making the transition easier.

Also, Lamb might be a fall back position if it turns out that KS can’t hack it.

On the face of it it would seem that this isn’t a very good career move for Lamb so there must have been other promises made in order to make him want to take the job. 30 virgins instead of 21 or something like that perhaps.

I see a lot of level-headed and tongue in cheek comments in that thread.

What is quintessential Riley is the despair he institutes at the beginning of the season, which can’t help but lead to improvement during the course of the season (i.e. finding identity), and hope from the fan base returns- pointing to a brighter future. However, the entire cycle repeats itself every season. Riley’s tenure at NU has not been long enough for the more astute fans to recognize this, yet. The non-astute fans never will.

The really good news, though, is the quality of the team asserted itself in the latter part of the season, which appeared to come from both the players (who showed great character in not bailing on the season) and the coaches. So at least the future looks good.

Talking about how well-compensated Aranda is and that he should be satisfied with that compensation is odd. However, the most interesting line is when Alvarez says “if your wife’s not happy, you’re not happy” and I think that is the imperative we’ve overlooked in Andersen’s decision to leave.

For Classified Staff positions, they don’t/can’t conduct formal interviews until after the closing date, and I believe that the same rule applies to Administrative/Faculty positions, such as DC, as well. I can’t imagine, however, that GA hasn’t reached out to potential hires to gauge interest. The most likely scenario is that GA and company already know who will be formally invited to interview, including minority candidates. Of course, that short-list could easily change if a current applicant withdraws or a surprise candidate submits their application by the deadline.

McWilliams made a couple of free throws with a second on the clock for the final score. Weisner had another poor game shooting, as did Hamblin. OSU played them closer than I thought they would, but still it is hard to beat a good team shooting <40% from the field, especially on the road.

Had trouble logging on to ESPN, so I was forced to settle for Ron Callan (sp?) over the radio. Sounded like Katie performed like the Frosh she is and that Gabby, as a Jr., gave us lots to look forward to. Hamblin seemed to be a disappointment.

I’m with “thatguy”, tired of coming close, battling, and still ending with a loss. That said, conference play is most important and these games vs Tenn and ND are good preparation. No reason for the gals to think anything other than full effort will be needed EVERY night from now on.

If they will avoid looking past ANYONE, I think they can repeat as conf champs.
And, Ron calls a pretty good game, IMHO.

I am with your analysis. Everybody wants us to win these games and become a powerhouse. However, sometimes teams have to grow throughout the season, and can become better as they learn from tough wins and loses. I am not giving any moral victories for close play here. They have performed poorly down the stretch of two most competitive games of the season. Wiesner seems to be putting too much pressure on herself that she can’t handle. She has not handled the clutch times well this season.

With all that being said, the team two executed possessions away from being undefeated. Is it something that needs improvement? Most definitely, Is it cause for concern? Yes. Can they turn it around? we shall see.

Now they’re pumped that it’s the first time in 15 seasons they didn’t lose a game by 20 or more points. Don’t worry huskers, Riley will show you what he’s all about… Just give it time. The sunshine pumping, lowered expectations, and rationalizations are mindboggling.

Oh, and thanks scotty, for the link the other day to the Nebraska sports talk show. NU football is interesting because they seem to be a program that somehow lost its “eliteness” and try as they may, just can’t get it back. The NU fans are insufferable because they still behave like they are relevant. Programs like Ohio St or Alabama must drive them crazy because they have had down years, but always come roaring back to greatness. NU can’t get there.

It’s not a phenomenon. It’s human nature. We always try to find positive aspects in things we can’t control but have a vested interest. This was the first year of Riley for the Huskers so it makes sense for them to do whatever it takes to create hope. But if Riley is still there in 3 years and he’s performing the same as he always does, then hope is out the window and they will get smacked in the face with reality. I guess we could say the same about our own coaching situation.

As pointed out above, the DC job posting doesn’t close until Jan. 04. They can’t formally interview, much less hire anyone until then. That’s not to say, however, that either of the aforementioned aren’t primary targets. Also don’t know whether a job opening announcement has to remain posted for a minimum amount of time and the closing date coincidentally fell on Jan. 4, or if it was chosen purposely to coincide with the end of bowl season. The plot thickens.

Unless the source specifically asked to not be named, I’m can’t take that as an excuse. What puzzles me is that you always are so skeptical and feel a need for evidence when you’re the one being told information, but you get mad when us readers here are skeptical in return.

I (and probably many others, too) don’t like your double standard of “Be VERY skeptical of whatever Riley/Banker/people in authority say! But if I say it, take it at my word because I said so.”

            Oh whatever.

Recruits are going to be upset about coaching changes. I don’t think that’s any big revelation. And some of them are going to grumble under their breaths… again, not a revelation.

Decisive moves were made without ego soothing communications. But they were made in the express context of putting the best players on the field, running them at their best positions and realizing their greatest potentials. I can live with that if it’s what has brought GA past success and is what it takes to get us there. I don’t mind the constant tinkering method when decisions aren’t protracted. Rosters change from year to year. Constant tinkering is required.

So the context implies there are coaches who are willing to take star-shaped pegs and go find or create star-shaped holes in which to fit them. And there are some who think star-shaped pegs can simply fit in a round hole if you make the hole big enough.

If Baldwin is still on the staff why would Thompson care what position Dave Baldwin has? Baldwin wouldn’t even coach Thompson because he’s a safety. He was probably going to take that visit anyway. Most recruits take visits to see all of their options and make sure they’re making the right decision.

There is a good series on the NFL network that covers Belichick and the Browns if that is what you are talking about wannabeav. It’s also a must watch for the Browns fans in the league, but you may want to hide all the sharp objects, keep animals out of kicking distance, and purchase some earmuffs for the kids.

According to this documentary, Belichick assembled the same team of people in Cleveland that he later had at the Pats. He was in the impossible process of turning the Browns into what the Patriots became in the 2000s. In 1994, they were 11-5 and had won a playoff game. The reason they fell apart in 1995 was due to some dumb ass deciding to move the team after 4 or 5 games.

Here’s a list of Belichick’s staff: 1) Ozzy Newsome, famous for building the two Ravens’
championship teams as GM, 2) Nick Sabin, famous for failing at the Dolphins and dominating the SEC, 3) Kurt Ferentz , not really household name famous but is the coach of the 12-1 Iowa Hawkeyes, 4) and a whole bunch of other people who went on to success.

And…..Art Modell fired them all, except for Ozzie Newsome, for having a bad season with a self imposed distraction of moving in the MIDDLE of the season to Baltimore. And everyone, except Cowboy fans, scratch their head about Jerry Jones about being a bad owner.

Sorry about your luck Cleveland fans.

Chip Kelly balked at less control

ESPN’s Sal Paolantonio says Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie had been thinking about making changes in the organization for weeks, including stripping Kelly of personnel control. Lurie decided to part ways with Kelly when he balked at the idea, so the team could get a jump on some available assistant coaches. Kelly told Fox Sports he didn’t fight the decision and he wants to stay in the NFL and not return to college.

And this piece of yellow journalism is pure horseshit. Rattling off six college gigs that already have head coaches? Nice piece of hard hitting work there

Andersen probably felt that McGiven and Woods were better options than Baldwin for the team. Is this a mistake, could be and time will tell. But, it seems,to me, to be a bigger mistake to wait to make the decision (obviously Andersen believes in the decision) just because of possible recruiting difficulties. He wants the staff to have their new defined roles in January when the team meets again, not in February after siging day. If you waited until February to make changes then you have the signed recruits who are now in your system, but upset with how the system works.

I’m kind of in the “better now than later” on the Baldwin demotion. The results on the field were not pretty against a lot of shitty defenses. Yes, freshmen quarterbacks, but lots of programs play them and score more than 16 points a game. In today’s college game, you should be able to score 16 playing blindfolded. It’s probably not just Baldwin’s fault, but it was needed change.

When the going gets tough, Riley bails. Not shocking, I guess.

Riley stuff hits me hard because I used to be a Pollyanna. Realizing Riley stopped being good was like a protracted “there is no Santa.” I feel kinda duped, but at least I wised up, even if it took until Civil War 2012.

I think that’s why it will be interesting to follow Riley at NU for at least a couple of years because on the surface he seems like an inexplicable hire for NU. I can’t completely buy the “nice guy counterpart to Pelini” argument because NU wants so badly to win football games, so one would think the NU adminsitration did due diligence and understood that Riley and his coaching staff LOST games at OSU because of their coaching decisions and strategies (and surprise, surprise, it happend this year at Nebraska).

Right now, from what I’m reading, NU nation is still buying into the “Riley does more with less” narrative and with the presumed talent advantage at NU, Riley will achieve great things. They are calling all of the close losses “bad luck”. I think NU’s schedule is harder next season, so we will see how patient they are in the end.

I think the Beaver offense is going to be much more interesting and effective next year, with more clearly defined roles (Nall, Lucas, Collins) and more experienced QB play (Garretson, McM). The depth and diversity at RB is also very encouraging, and I expect Isaac to stick around and lead the OLine; the running game should be formidable and create balance and opportunity in the passing game.

Also, regarding the D Coordinator and recruits and recruiting. I think its important to remember that while Sitake’s departure may affect some recruits, the incoming DC and LB coaches (if both are brought from outside) may pull some talent with them. Now where the DC comes from is obviously important (for example, if Clune, are his recruits to Utah State really Pac material?), and new staff doesn’t necessarily mean a zero sum result in recruiting (brining in as much talent as may have left due to Sitake departure), but it isn’t negative, and recruits may be reassured by and like the new DC.

Hold onto this class, including those highly ranked DBs, and things will be much better in year two.

I’m having a bit of a problem in accepting the notion that Mr. Clune has demonstrated that he deserves to be a DC at the Pac-12 level. All he has on his resume is being a DC for one year at Hawaii and one year at Utah State. That does not impress me for whatever that’s worth.

Also, he hasn’t shown that he has the chops to compete against top level recruiters. Recruiting to Utah State is one thing but that’s no where near what it takes to get top notch kids to attend a school that has no airport.

    http://www.utahstateaggies.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/kevin_clune_395651.html

Kevin Clune, who has 23 years of coaching experience, including seven as a coordinator, is in his first year as Utah State’s defensive coordinator and sixth year overall with the program.

Clune spent the 2014 season as the defensive coordinator at Hawai’i as the Rainbow Warriors defense gave up 26.8 points and 418.2 yards per game, an improvement from the 2013 season, when Hawai’i allowed 38.8 points and 494.7 yards a game.

Clune previously spent five years at Utah State (2009-13) as its linebackers coach, helping the Aggies to three-straight bowl games and a 2012 Western Athletic Conference championship.

Detmer was being mentioned as the OC well before McGiven, so I’m not sure where that idea came from.

If Clune can’t recruit he shouldn’t be hired. My guess is GA thinks he can recruit Poly players and Utah players. I think we can now see the pattern that GA is going to his comfort zone for all hires. Here’s Clune when he was hired a year ago. He seems fine. Don’t like how he jokes so much.

I feel like GA wants to pay all his buddies at OSU’s expense. Giving this unproven guy more than 300k to be DC won’t help that perception of mine. I don’t think you bump a guy to 500-600k just because he’s in the PAC. Maybe after a couple years of great D you do that.

I wouldn’t mind a low base salary with performance enhancing bonuses that would equal any in the Pac should he do as well as any in the Pac. You can pay your buddies all you want if they wildly succeed.

I don’t disagree that unproven should get paid as unproven. But the perception of halving the salary of the last guy does what for expectations from those outside the program? At least make it clear that he could be paid as well as anyone when he performs as well as anyone. That way you still give the perception that we will pay fairly, if nothing else.

What I don’t like is when someone comes in low, succeeds, then gets a major bump in pay. Expectations are relieved due to initial success, and then it turns into another struggle for stability. I’m fine with paying a competitive salary for the position rather than the coach himself so long as expectations are set to match that salary, and consequences are meted if they’re not met.

It is what it is. You hire the best you can get and deal with turnover. Success brings with it one of three things:
            1. A successful head coach who brings stability at a higher bar for a sustained time.
            2. A head coach who is poached.
            3. A head coach who loses coordinators to promotion and doesn’t reach #1 because of it.

The true test will be on the assistants that move on. If they succeed, more coordinators will be hired away. But if they falter and end up in exile in the NFL or FCS, people will stop looking our way for a time.

Aranda if he comes will make 900K+. Orlando around 750K. If Corey Raymond from LSU you probably don’t go higher than 530K which is what I would cap Clune at. Here’s hoping Aranda or Orlando will listen to a significant pay hike in a premier conference.

Bottom line, a DC at OSU is not worth 750k unless they are an instant game changer. Changer as in……, just because of their superior coaching technique the team goes from giving up 35 points a game to 25 points a game in one year. I wasn’t convinced that was ever going to be Sitake. Now if Sitake was making 400k, give him some time.

Winning and sell-outs are more important than what we pay. I agree, there is a need to be responsible with the budget. These are good points. I think the deal is we think we deserve to hire someone who warrants the higher salary. And if Clune doesn’t warrant that salary, then he isn’t who we should be hiring. So if he gets the higher pay from us, the perception would be that OSU is paying friends of the coach in excess when they don’t warrant that pay.

And we’ve been down that road before.

I like to think Stansbury and Ray are in touch enough with that idea that they have had that discussion with GA.

We’ve also seen OSU go cheap before and that almost never works. Rueck being the exception. Coaching is like a fraternity, people hire others “from the family” far more often than not. The other side of going cheap is what does that say to others in coaching circles, that we won’t pay? Not what we want to be known for. Get the best guy you can get, and pay him in respect to his peers.

So the question would be, “Who are [so-and-so]’s peers?

Is the pay commensurate with those peers? Is it in a range we want to continue to attract future coaches and recruits? Or is it inflated for someone who is not a peer simply because we want the perception of the position to be more “respectable” than the person who actually holds the position?

Last comment of the year for me,

Football – Seems like Andersen is going deep into his coaching tree to find replacements. Does he need to make an outside hire? Not necessarily but the risk is much higher if it doesn’t work out.

I think the best place to look is the NFL. Those guys will have the most experience running a 3-4 defense, assuming Andersen wants to keep that scheme. The d coordinator strength should be his coaching. The linebacker coach strength can be recruiting. The second place to look for a d coordinator is the fcs schools. Probably a lot of good candidates there.

Also hopefully recruiting can pick up. Loss of Sitake/Tuiaki should be minimal. Right now the class is probably in the top 50. It’s the bottom of the class that is bringing it down. Doesn’t seem like there are any top recruits interested right now that could save the class.

Basketball – Pretty close to what I expected in non conference. The freshman have showed flashes but have yet to perform consistently. They tend to disappear at times. If the team approaches every game like they did vs Kansas, post season is a very realistic option. Probably will have to go 10-8 in conference play to make it into the big dance.

Women’s bball – should make the postseason. finish top 3 in the conference. Would have been nice if they won their high profile non conf games.

Baseball – I wonder when they are going to publish the roster. Earlier news reports said that they were at 35 guys already so no one is going to be cut. A big season is in store for them. Should be in the top 10 all year long. Non conf isn’t that exciting.

I think you’re the first to mention the NFL. I’m all in considering who it might be. You still have to consider turnover as a possibility. And you would need to hire someone who can recruit by reputation if he can’t do the legwork at first.

Bringing up the NFL and FCS, why is nobody talking about JUCO coaches? Would someone like Jerry Dominguez at Arizona Western consider this kind of move? He runs a very good D. He knows recruiting and does so in many of the same circles our coaches already target. He has worked with our coaches for over a decade. And he runs the academic program for the team.

I’m posting this here because it will probably never be seen by almost all of the AB’ers but it allows me to get this off my chest without having to burden the others with my cinical (?) thoughts on this.

My big concern is this recruiting class, especially on D and specifically the D line and linebackers, becomes a clusterfuck and is set back another year.

Not sure what clusterfuck means but it sure sounds apt.

      snip
clusterfuck – definition of clusterfuck in English from the Oxford …
A disastrously mishandled situation or undertaking.
      snip

Yup, clusterfuck is the right word.

Another concern is imo, image wise, the new DC is a step down from KS and that too could hurt recruiting. Being taught by someone who’s advertised as being one of the best vs some guy who has a total of 2 years experience at Hawaii and Utah State.

Well kid, what is it – – Do you want to be taught by “our guy” or by some nobody that has no real track record?

Also, I suspect Clune has had no contact with the kids OSU is currently recruiting because talent wise they’re a better caliber than the kids that Utah State recruits on a regular basis.

Oh yeah I think my low/no talent friend said Coach Clune had called him about playing at Utah State. Woooo!!! Snicker. Snicker.
