Hey Beavlettes, I will be gone (for business, not pleasure, unfortunately) the entire week starting tonight.

Try to behave and all that. OldBeavs and NiceBeav, feel free to make any topic you wish while I’m gone. If the spam protectors blocks anyone, sorry, but I won’t be able to approve you until Saturday morning.

Go Beavs.

  1. Comparing Oregon State and Oregon, which do you think is the better sport to be dominant in: baseball or track and field? Which sport do you think is more relevant nationally?

I don’t think either is a “revenue sport” but both, I would imagine, earn more than the respective average. I wonder how much Oregon benefits/earns from hosting the Olympic trials and other professional/non-NCAA meets?

That said, baseball is one of the 3 core sports (sorry, hockey) in the USA and is the damn national past time for Christ sakes.

Trying to be objective as possible, and it seems pretty even to me… I think it’s a really tough call!

  2. Does the f’ing SEC totally run the baseball and softball tourney selections? Beav baseball gets hosed last year and the Gopher softball team got royally screwed this year.

Not one of the sixteen hosts despite….
Best record in the nation at 52-3
#2 ranking in the coaches poll
    #11RPI
Won regular season and conf. tournament.
    25 game win streak
    # 8 last week in the NCAA self ranking.

    • Partly….the SEC has a lot of pull due to fan base, perception(coverage), and bias in the ranks. It helps when you are on TV all the time — thank ESPN!!!

        • The bias of these NCAA selection committees truly has become ridiculous. This year, thirteen SEC schools fielded softball teams. The selection committee awards tournament berths to every one of those thirteen SEC schools. The selection committee then awards eight of those SEC schools with top-16 seeds — and first-round hosting privileges. Meanwhile, Minnesota — the #1 team in the coaches’ poll — is denied a spot in the top-16 and is being sent to Alabama for first-round/regional play. Would love to hear the head of the selection committee try to justify these obviously biased and unfair decisions. Would probably sound a lot like the specious explanations offered up last year by the head of the NCAA baseball selection committee (Joel Erdmann of South Alabama) for screwing Oregon State out of a berth in the 2016 tournament. http://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/index.ssf/2016/05/oregon_state_baseball_coach_pa_2.html

          • Don’t forget that Joel Erdmann South Alabama got one of the last tourney spots as well. With a worst rpi. Curious what others have to say about Minnestoa getting hosed like this.

    • thanks for the link there is a lot of stuff there; I’m still worried about hitting I want to see more runs out of these bats runner on 2nd no out you should get a run in more times than not and this team seem to have trouble with this. Yes the hits are there but the scoring is not.

  3. FWIW – Moore ranked as #2 backup QB in NFL:

“When Ryan Tannehill went down with a torn ACL in Week 14 of the 2017 NFL season, Moore was forced to take the reins of the playoff-bound Dolphins (a position both McCarron and Stanton have been dealt in the past two years). His performance for the rest of that season—a career-best 63.2%, eight touchdowns and three picks—was impressive enough to make him the biggest year-over-year riser in these rankings….”

    https://www.si.com/nfl/2017/05/15/ranking-nfl-backup-quarterbacks

      • Its true of almost any employment field…but yeah, Moore got quite a gig. Back up QB in Miami.

As long he doesn’t get his leg stomped on in practice by Suh, he should be good…

      • Hey good to hear about Moore. Anderson is still in Carolina and that is not half bad. Wonder how much media attention back up QBs get if nothing happens with the starter and they are not bone heads ie drink too much

    • Always thought he was a good NFL QB prospect (better than Canfield or Mannion) and could never understand why he never got a shot.

  4. Does anybody else use “Beaver Sports Now” to find OSU sports articles on line? I find it a convenient aggregate. A few months ago, it would list Angry Beavs threads and Portland Tribune articles (some of the better Beav reporting), now it no longer does. I find that a little interesting, not sure who owns it. I wondering it I should stop giving it the clicks if there is some censorship going on?

  5. For anyone that needs an update on the game 3-1 Beavers bottom of the 5th Grenier with a solo shoot to make it 3-1

I’m not sure if it is all wind but this park is hitter friendly

    • Indiana takes them down. Watched several innings. IU should have had a couple more runs early if not for some egregious baserunning errors. L’ville blew a couple routine defensive plays.
Beavs look better in my highly biased opinion.

  6. I thought it was interesting – and positive – that Andersen, Rueck and Tinkle attended last night’s game. Perhaps with the crowd sizes the baseball team is getting, the attendance by Portland/I-5 corridor metro area fans, they figure its a good time to be seen and to talk to fans (donors?)? Or is it less strategic than that and more just about following a great team:

“In a game that that Oregon State football coach Gary Andersen, men’s basketball coach Wayne Tinkle and women’s basketball coach Scott Rueck each attended, Andersen reserved special praise for the baseball team as he stopped near the press box while circling the concourse.

“I love these dudes,” he said.”

    • The pregame event at the nearby Beavs Store was to be attended by all the coaches you mentioned as well as Barnes. A strategic move to tag on to the popularity of the baseball team right now and to visit with fans/donors.
Some of these guys do show up at home baseball without the fanfare, that’s more about following a great team.
      It’s all good, IMHO.

  7. So is anyone else giggling a little as we head into this weekend?

I’m thinking the season worked out such that we get the equivalent of an SEC type 1AA set-up headed for the playoffs. The team can play its depth and maybe juice a couple stat lines to finish the season. Fine tuning and rest.

I was wondering at the beginning of the year why this series was where it was. Now it doesn’t matter.

    • Here’s how I’d plan it out the rest of the way

WSU – Same rotation. Luke, Drew, Jake. Drew limited to 75 pitches, others at 90. Go with the A lineup for the first two games. If they win those first two, sit Adley and others and mix in some bench guys in the 3rd game.

ACU – Same rotation. Fehmel start on Thurs if his arm is good to go, otherwise Britton. Max pitch count for any guy is 80 -85. Mix in bench guys in the lineup for the first two games. Go with the A lineup for the last two to have them sharp into the regionals.

Going to need 4 solid starters for the regionals.

This is a tough part of coaching. The team is doing too good but you can’t pull them back because they will lose all the momentum.

      • You just have to give enough to stretch your legs. And you also want the bench guys to come in and give some enthusiasm, some new energy headed into the post season.

It’s hard to see any tough part about coaching this team. Putting them together was the hard part. But they just have this edge to them that if they play their best, you can’t beat them.

      • Decisions about who to rest and how that effects their mental and physical performance seem to me to be among the most difficult for a head coach.
But, I think Casey has a pretty good handle on it, he said this regarding allowing Adley to play vs ucks and holding him out vs Portland:

“Maybe he can push me around one time, but the next time, maybe not quite,”

One trick vs WSU and ACU will be to get just the right amount of exposure for arms like: Tweedt, Englebrekt, Gambrell, and Mulholland, guys who need to be sharp coming out of the pen.

BTW, Danny up with a piece where he quotes Casey as saying he may move Jake Thompson to Saturday and have Drew go on Sunday this weekend.

        http://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/index.ssf/2017/05/oregon_state_baseball_could_ma.html#incart_river_index

    • We will lose RPI playing Abeline Christian, etc. Last night we lost 35 points against Portland. That is if anyone cares about being #1 in RPI as NC has the possibility to overtake us.

    • I saw the Long Beach State Dirtbags, another projected host, last weekend here in Minneapolis. Their Friday guy was pretty impressive. Easy throwing motion and great movement on the pitches. They beat my Gophs 3-2, but were helped by a couple DP’s in the last two innings with men on. Gophs killed them in game two and they killed the Goph’s in game three. Their bullpen guys were not super impressive.

    • I hate saying it, but BYU will be tough. They’ve played a lot of close games, and can really hit the ball. They’ve split games with Utah, lost to Oregon close, and lead the West Coast conference with a 20-4 conference record over the likes of San Diego, San Francisco, Gonzaga, and Pepperdine. Their pitching sucks, so not a bad match-up overall, but anything can happen in baseball.

      • ….also their players are 35 years old, very mature, and wearing the special undies….so superstition level off the charts….

      • Was reading that whichever regional BYU plays in, will have their schedule moved around so that BYU can avoid playing on Sunday. Would start on Thursday and a Sunday final could by moved to Monday if the series falls out that way. Could affect pitching rotations slightly, so hopefully we dont end up playing them

  8. Way OT: Inside a story about the Baylor mess, was a nugget about our fearless leader. Not Angry……..Ed Ray. Not good for the NCAA or Ray. Concerning Ped State.

NCAA wound up walking back the penalties, and the organization was further embarrassed when Oregon State president Ed Ray, the chair of the committee that issued the penalties, admitted he couldn’t even be bothered to read the Freeh Report, the investigation upon which the sanctions were based, while on vacation.

    • A nugget, you say? More like a friggin bombshell!

When you are the chairman of that committee, taking a vacation from your responsibilities in this kind of matter is not an option.

      If true, very disappointing.

        • It is interesting that the NCAA considers this type of case beyond it’s scope, however they’ll punish a kid for having a dirty piss test?
I understand the importance of due process here, but I also feel the NCAA can and should punish the staff/admin at Baylor for their attempt to cover up these incidents (allegedly), which shows a lack of institutional control. That should be within their scope, even if the rape charges stay on the state/federal jurisdiction.

And Ed Ray, wtf? The biggest and most disgusting institutional cover up the NCAA has faced, and you can’t even read the report? Maybe he already considered it beyond his scope and didnt think it was the NCAA responsibility? But just spend a few hours on the plane and read the damn thing.

          • Agreed. You should read it. But in all fairness, the first section is bad enough. And the abstract says it only gets worse as you read the details. If I could get away with not knowing some of that stuff that I now can’t unknow, I’d go back and do that.

But that’s why you get paid the big bucks. You bear that burden.

    • Ed Ray has been the absolute worst thing to ever happen to Oregon State University. Many people, including myself, cannot wait til he retires or moves on.

    • Very disappointing about robinette not sure why he would transfer he saw time as a freshman. He probably wouldn’t play this year but could see substantial time next year. Its kind of weird maybe his heart is in defense.

      • Couple of guesses, he was pushed down the depth chart at OLB and doesn’t see himself as a TE.

Didn’t put on enough weight to play at DE, which seemed like his natural position out of high school, but his play there was contingent on carrying a higher weight.

Maybe homesick? He’s from San Diego, so that part of the move makes sense.

Suck to see him go, because what little we saw of him was at least promising

      • That is a bummer. Loved his potential with that length on D. It did seem like a cause for concern when he was moved to TE though.

  9. So Eubanks and Thompson returning to school and the JM transfer “rumor” ends up being nothing? Wow who coulda predicted that? LOL

    • Unrelated, but I saw this morning that UW has a 4* and a 5* QB commit in the 2018 class. Oregon State has none.
Seems crazy to me that a guy would pass up being the #1 guy at Oregon State to be the 2nd guy at UW. (Both have Oregon State offers) I suppose coach Peterson has a slightly better track record when it comes to QBs and overall offensive gameplay, but….c’mon….

      https://youtu.be/8c7U5pyKh0E

      • Coming out of a College Football Playoff year probably helps with the draw to UW. But I agree, it’s a bit concerning that GA can’t attract an upper level QB, especially since we don’t even have an established starter.

  10. WSU Preview –

A decent hitting team, not much pop but scores runs. Pitching and fielding is their weakness. Little pitching depth.

They are a scrappy team, and with Lees and Spencer there, we know they have good coaches. If they start landing some good talent, this will be a team to watch out for.

  11. Watching a little post season softball while i work today. My first time watching the Beavs play. Just learned we have a player with the last name Areola?

Beavs up 2-1, bottom of the 5th
    Game is on ESPN3
