Is this a good time to mention I found the name Jordan Williams in the student directory? And there’s a current Clemson DT transfer by the same name?

Only catch, we actually have 2 Jordan Williams in the student directory…….so obviously we’re getting 2 Clemson DTs named Jordan Williams!!

  2. Jordan Williams would be huge. Possibly the best DT in the transfer portal.

How about this for a training program: he put on 65 lbs while at Clemson!

  3. Well, Derek Mason is not coming to Oregon State. Hired by Auburn to be their DC. Was considering nfl jobs and broadcasting opportunities. LSU wanted him but told him he had to join their staff for their bowl game or else.

  4. Been asked a couple times if I know what Coach Smith’s press conference will be about today.
I’m not aware of a press conference, or a topic, or a time.
Anybody else care to fill in the details?

  5. Lindor to the Mets. I imagine that helps Conforto some. Still be interesting to see if the Mets work out an extension for him, sounds like ownership is willing to spend.

  6. Dunn, Rashed and Montibon are the only seniors gone, Bradford, Keobounnam, Eldridge and Andrezj among the returners. Big to return all starting line

      • I don’t think so…I didn’t get a chance to watch all the games but my recollection is the guys getting burned in coverage were usually our safeties. Our CBs were decent. I could see us taking a big step back this year. Am I off base on that?

        • Wright and Grant were pretty good. Dunn was replaceable.

I’d agree the safeties were generally worse, but I thought Julian played well when he got more time later in the year. I think he was replacing Arnold, who stuck out to me as being especially bad the first few games. Grant is solid at safety, but when he slid over to nickel, there wasn’t anyone good to replace him. I don’t think Oladipo was expected to see the field at all before the opt-outs, so hopefully we’ll see more of the JC guys next season.

    • That transfer is a lot more important now. Hopefully beasons brother also end up in Corvallis. Then will basically be a wash.

What ever happened to forrest? Played a lot as a freshman but didn’t see him at all last year.

    • No mention of hardge hopefully he still plans on playing. Hopefully clarke comes back.

Morris needs to retire. It’s probably the best thing for him and his body as well as the team he’s just wasting a scholarship at this point. I feel bad for the kid but sometimes it’s just not in the cards.

  7. Here’s what I posted in the prior threads about Bloomfield.

“Technically he’s a Matt Wells guy rather than GA:

Originally from the 2017 class although it looks like his clock started in 2018, and he’s technically a redshirt Sophomore next year.
Also, his surname was Avendano rather than Bloomfield coming out of HS.
I’m just a little surprised we’re trying to find transfer OL players, unless we have one or more players leaving.

    https://247sports.com/Player/Heneli-Avendano-93402/high-school-178728/

And here’s his Utah State profile:

    https://utahstateaggies.com/sports/football/roster/heneli-bloomfield/8525

    6’3? 300lbs OG

    • I think this is mostly due to the fact he has 3 to play 3. He may not crack the starting lineup this year, but it’s so nice to have him for 3 years to develop under Coach M.

    • Daschel mentioned that Keli’i Montibon is not returning and Onesimus Clarke is still up-in-the-air, so this seems like good insurance.

    • See that he was a good DT in highschool as well. Maybe a conversion? Didn’t they do that with quillen? I doubt they will but you never know he has 3 years.

  8. So the first 2 transfers I’ve predicted in the new year have come through. Does this mean Jordan Williams is next?

Maybe coach Lose’ tweets are the pre-Dam Right tweets to look out for.

  9. I hope the transfers from South Carolina and Kansas are the “best of the worst”. The teams they played for this season were a combined 2-17. It’s nice that they are seeing The Beavs as an upgrade.

I feel like if Tongue and Fenwick can’t get significant playing time then we are on a significant up track in 2021. If Jones and Bloomfield are definitive starters we are probably in serious trouble in 2021.

      • I don’t see it with Fenwick especially when we have Newell who is faster, better ability to make defenders miss….as well as Baylor and other RBs

      • Jones is probably on par with Wright. By all accounts he was a solid starter in the Big 12. Wright was HM All-P12, which is definitely a weaker conference.

Fenwick seems like a good role player, but we probably need Baylor or someone else to step up as the feature back.

    • I think the narrative our local media heads are spinning about OSU doing a great job with the transfer portal is a little overstated. It’s not like we’re the only Pac12 team picking up players. I’ve seen Utah, ASU and even Arizona recently, picking up higher calibur transfers than OSU. OSU just has a little higher number in terms of quantity.

My main hope is to see an upgrade in talent across the board when it comes to transfers. When we lose a guy, my hope is we pick up someone else with equal or more talent.

For instance, losing Taylor hurt, but replacing him with a younger 4* but less proven talent in Tongue is an acceptable tradeoff.
Losing Jefferson for Fenwick is backwards move, but Jefferson was gone regardless, so the hope is somone else will be ready to step up.
Losing Wright for Jones is a wash in my mind.
Losing for Dawkins for Bloomfield is a slight upgrade.
I need to see a real step up with Moran, Garcia and Dunn recently leaving too.

To me, we’re essentially keeping our talent at the same level overall, when my hope would be to see significant upgrades.

      • Agreed. I would love to get to the point where transfers are possible starters with time in the system or depth players. Overall talent pool has definitely increased under Smith through recruiting and transfers.

      • Dawkins was D line tho. Wright was our best corner so this guy would have to come in and be the teams best corner to be a wash.

      • Hmm, but clearly we’re winning at the transfer game. Garcia would be the only exiting transfer that would seem to be a loss, and we’ve had many good to great players transferring in.

It seems like an unfair comparison if you’re looking at normal losses due to graduation and NFL aspirations and comparing that against incoming transfers. Those are “normal” losses and are normally offset by younger players maturing and developing.

I think you have to look at transfers in vs transfers out. And I think we’re looking great in that camp. Maybe other conf teams are playing that game well also, but clearly there are teams out there losing at the transfer game, and they aren’t us.

        • Agree, probably unfair to include the NFL exits, but I was only counting the ones who left early. If we’re replacing those bodies with transfers in, it seems like the best 1 to 1 comparison.
In the case of the OL transfer, Dawkins wasn’t OLine, but he was depth at one position being replaced by a body at another position, so I was trying to be consistent with the potential level of usage lost for Dawkins vs how much I expect to see Bloomfield used. It’s not perfect, but what I would hope to see is a significant upgrade at 3 spots to replace the scholarships for Moran/Dunn/Garcia, which shouldn’t be a tall order. Will be disappointing if their replacements are on par.

          • I would think and hope that Smith will do what he has in the past and not try to fill those spots with just anybody. He’s done well being patient and finding guys that are better than our average recruits late in the game. The worst transfers so far production wise would be lightbourn, lindsay, and Sorenson. The jury is still out on gumbs. Generally the transfers have been much higher rated than the normal commits. Hopefully he can continue that trend.

          • Those may be the worst production wise of the ones that have played, but there’s also guys like Quillen, Sorensen, Fisher, Scarton, Brewer. Did any of these guys play this year? I think Fisher had Covid so can’t really know what we have there.

          • I think Brewer was on the two deep as well as Sorenson so I think you could argue that they helped with depth. Does quillen play OL and doesn’t he have a talented brother about to graduate? Fisher who knows yet? Who is scarton?

Think it’s a little early to judge Brewer also. I think he can play tackle where we don’t have very good depth.

      • I think the best player on a bad team can still be pretty great. We have had some really really bad teams with some really great plaeyrs.

      • CB is one of those positions too where you can have all the talent in the world and if your team sucks you are gonna struggle to make a very big impact.

  10. I have nothing to go on but intuition and from following recruiting for a very long time, but my gut is telling me we are getting Jordan Williams.

Good news. He really belongs on a ducks blog anyway but he’s probably been banned by them too. Thanks for flushing that turd….

        1

I remember your name from the ducks blogs as well. He wasn’t wrong when he called you out for doing exactly the same thing that you’re complaining about. It’s a little bit hypocritical don’t you think?

          • It means you’re going to get banned again Turdman. Give it up as you’ve been found out yet again. You’re like a dog that keeps crapping all over the place….why….because you just like to be an annoying a-hole.

        • It means Swammiturd was obsessed with GreatSwammi posting on that site, you’re using a Yandex email account, your IP string is similar to turd’s, etc. We’ll see where it goes. I like the username.

          • 6
            1

            1) I’ve only ever used Yandex as my email
            2) by the looks of things and many others responses to him, Greatswammi isn’t very likeable and appears to be confrontational, but that has nothing to do with me
            3) I used to frequent both sides of Oregonlive when it existed and distinctly remember him as a trouble maker so I pointed out his hypocritical post very simply

          • So, let me see….this new guy with a new userid shows up 1 day after The Turdmeister gets banned….yeah, that’s pretty clever Turdmeister. You know how I know bc his first reaction was about me. That’s a tell right there. The other thing about your comment is….in the other forum that shall go unnamed, there were articles about the Beavers and Ducks combined in the same article that I often responded to. Suggesting that my volume of comments were anywhere near that of yours is just freaking laughable. Of course you conveniently used the “follow” feature on that other forum to stalk me virtually anytime I made a comment. You had at least 50-75 different userIDs and with each one, you would use the follow option to stalk me. For every 1 comment I posted, you would post 20-30 per day more in volume than mine and yours were always the same…..rude, obsessive, indignant and completely petulant….much like you’ve posted on AngryBeavs ad nauseum. Furthermore, you twice now been banned from AB and, yet, you persist to continue your BS. You are so pitifully transparent it’s embarrassing. Can’t you take the hint that you’re not a Beaver fan and AB has banned you twice. You must have been banned 50-60 times over on the other forum and that’s why you changed userIDs so often as a workaround to feed your narcissistic need for attention. Angry is right, you are obsessed and it’s very, very creepy. It’s one thing to go to one site and obsess over one person, but it lunatic fringe when it’s another site. Seek help to overcome your pitiful existence but this isn’t the place to do it. For once, get a freaking life Sally and stop with the creepy internet stalking.

          • Oh, I forgot….your Ducks WBB team lost to a short-handed Stanford team and your DC went to Boise State. Tough time to be a duck fan hey there Turdman? LOL

          • Sorry Charlie, I have certainly been here more that one day. You sound unhinged and paranoid which likely leads to your unlikeable personality. “My team” didn’t play today bud although to be accurate, both teams were short handed due to injuries and Covid protocol. It’s going around. I would certainly rather be playing as opposed to not as most teams on lengthy Covid protocols will be less likely to make the dance. We should have had more stringent protocols in place and managed things better in that regard.

I wonder if we could figure out a way for his posts to only show up in his browser. That way he doesn’t think he’s banned. You’d have to generate custom HTML based on IP address. To him it would only look like he’s being ignored.

I think it’s the right call. He is immature and a distraction. We pretty much have civil debates/analysis here without personal name-calling. Also, when he went dark after the Civil War loss, he lost me.

    • He’s back again under the new name Rileysbike in case you weren’t aware. He’s figured out another rear entry point, but that’s not unusual…that’s his MO. He’s attempt to disguise who he is but he’s been stalking me for so long now….he just won’t quit. He’s in desperate need of attention. As I’ve previously commented, it’s your blog site and he’s here to do one thing and one thing only….spread his toxic comments over and over and over. I’d ban him yet again.

That being banned in here is such a rarity is a good sign and tip o the hat to self-regulating angry beavs committing to the number one rule in life: don’t be an asshole.

I took the plunge and paid the $7 for access to PFF’s player grades. Their process is they have hundreds of analyst/scout types that watch every play of every game and give them a grade on each play based on how well they accomplished what they were doing. I think it’s a better approach than just looking at stats because not every pass that should be an INT is an INT, etc. Obviously there’s some subjectivity at play, too, but it’s another data point beyond traditional stats and our own eye test and it’s interesting for stat-light positions like OL and DB. It seems to be weighted more toward consistency.

Scores are on a scale from 1-100. For most positions, serviceable guys tend to be low 60’s. 70ish puts you in contention for All-Conference honors.

Some interesting progression/regressions for the Beavs and a few other notes:
    Offense
Gebbia, at 79, is in the top 20 for P5 QB’s, (notably ahead of Brock “The one that got away” Purdy)
Nolan was rated a 60 on passing (in line with Tyler Shough and Chase Garbers)
Shockingly, JJ has been consistently 70-80 his whole career
Baylor was rated a 66, compared to Fenwick’s 73 in limited action at SC (Fenwick was a 75 last year)
Every receiver except Champ (57) was rated 64-66
Kolby Taylor went from being a 58-59 his whole career to a 66 this year.
Our TE tandem (56) are the third worst in the P12
Eldridge’s All-PAC season at Arizona he was a 70, last year he was a 63, this year a 72. Definite injury bounceback.
Kipper went from 70 last year to 59 this year. Ouch.
The OL as a whole get really solid run block grades but poor pass pro grades

    Defense
They highlight safety (ex. Grant) and DE/OLB as the major weaknesses on defense. As a group, the edge guys averaged a 54.
Dunn went from 75(!) last year to 59 this year.
Roberts went from 63 last year to 77 this year.
Speights was a 59 last year and this year. That’s surprising to me based on his tackle numbers last year.
Hodgins went from a 51 last year to 69 this year
Sandberg went from 55 last year to 68 this year
Rawls was a 65 this year
AHM has gotten steadily better over his career (50-55-62)
Rashed’s progression/regression: 69-79-58. He actually had a solid grade on run defense this year, which was surprising.
Stover only played 35 snaps, but he had a surprisingly high 65 grade. Could be a guy that steps up next year

The general story of the defense seems to be that the LB group way underachieved compared to expectations, and the DT/DL group was actually pretty solid. Half the secondary was good (Wright, Grant), half was below average (Dunn and the rest of the rotation).

    • That’s super interesting. I’d love to hear commentary on the DL from the analyst. I would agree that they did a good job of holding gaps and one on one bit I did not see anyone who required a double team. IMO the lack of a double team threat on DL hurt the EDGE production.

Really cool stuff, thanks for sharing OH

      • Sandberg’s pass rush grade was top 10 in the conference. Hodgins and Rawls were below average.

Even if Sandberg is requiring a double team, we just don’t have the size/athleticism at the other positions to generate much of a pass rush without committing big numbers.

      • Yeah, I think this casts the ‘QB competition’ narrative in a different light. Nolan’s run rating was also only marginally better than Gebbia’s. I think because he scrambles earlier it makes him look like a more effective runner, but he’s giving up possible yards from throwing that Gebbia gains with patience.

For what it’s worth, Gulbranson’s 11 plays of dominance make him the highest rated QB in the conference.

      • Changing the first play of the 20 CW resulting in JJ 82 yard TD run is a great example of his value.

I did not see Gulbranson play. Was he playing against ASU’s first string? What did he do well?

        • 2
          1

No, it was garbage time, but he has a quick release and the ball comes out like a rocket! The TD pass could have been an INT, but Beason outfought a couple of DB’s for the ball. Gulbranson threw because there were no other options, but at least he put it in the right area.

    • “Shockingly, JJ has been consistently 70-80 his whole career.” Is that a bit of sarcasm given the scale (70+ all conference honors) or do you think it should have been higher?

Generally, his decision making is good, right? Seems like the 2019 CW was an exception.

Did his blocking/pass protection figure into this? And how was that scored?

I imagine his score could have been higher if he had been targeted more in the passing game and caught more passes?

      • I was just saying we all know he’s great.

The scale seems to be a bit different for skill position players. I’m guessing because they have more opportunities for game-breaking plays, but I’m not sure. 75ish seems to be the cutoff for all-conference, so the standard is a bit higher.

JJ is rated as the #49 back in the country. He’s a top 20 pass blocker (which I’m sure factored into the decision to enter the draft), but his receiving score is pretty average and his rushing score is outside the top 50. My guesses would be they’re saying the OL did a good job blocking and he picked up a lot of yards just running through a big hole or he gets knocked a bit for not breaking as many tackles as some guys do. Maybe the difference between taking yards and creating yards.

As far as the draft goes, if you assume NFL teams have to have a guy that’s a good pass blocker, it looks like he’s in the top 10-15 backs in the draft. If you consider some strength of competition factor, he’s top 10.

        • 2
          3

My knock on JJ is he is kind of a home run hitter with running the ball. Lots of HRs but also lots of strike outs. Think he needed to turn a few more of those stuffed at the line plays into 2 or 3 yard gains. Still he works on his receiving chops a bit and I think he is a solid NFL 3rd down back. On the flip side was Quizz, dudes YPC was never overly impressive but he’d constantly turn plays that should have been no gain into 3 or 4 yard runs, sure it’d be nice to have the HR threat but if you think about it if you can run for 4 yards every single play you are unstoppable.

          • I agree. He had a lot of big runs but didn’t really create those on his own. Most of his big ones you could have driven a truck through and most guys would have scored. That just won’t happen in the NFL. He ball security and injury history is also a concern

  12. So when I put on my bitcoin trade a month ago 42k was my gut feeling. We just hit it this morning. Torn on selling…but it hit target. Anyone?

    • There’s a lot of push from institutional buyers right now, so it FEELS like there’s a little more meat to the case for a structural move higher. Dems in the Senate have everyone worried about money printing (lol). I think it’s also getting push from expected stimulus buying, which should be close to priced in now.

Do you use any momentum indicators for your buy/sell timing? Looking at RSI, it’s entered overbought territory now, so you’d think the growth would come to a halt sometime soon.

Just depends on your original plan. Is this a long position or just a short trade? If it’s a short trade, I’d get out now. I think it still has more potential over a longer time frame, though.

      • Yes my goal here is to sell and buy back lower. I think it goes up more over the long-run. I put this trade on in early Dec and gut was 42k. I don’t really use charts…just decades of following markets. Can’t believe it hit it on the nose today. I sold.

          • I use GBTC in my brokerage account, and then I have an account on coinbase with actual BTC in it (I still have these, sold the GBTC trade).

          • GDLC is an easy crypto ETF to trade that tracks Bitcoin, Ethereum, and a few of the other most liquid ones. The expense ratio is high, but that’s the price you pay for convenience.

          • I highly recommend staying away from any ETF that invests in crypto. They all trade at steep premiums to Net Asset Value (NAV) meaning you are paying a steep premium – often +50% or more – on the underlying assets. If you bullish on crypto just purchase through Coinbase Pro (~0.5% transaction fee) or Robinhood.

I’ve sold off most of my bitcoin but still have some left over. Over the long-term, bitcoin is dictated by the marginal cost of production (i.e. cost to mine a bitcoin) which is just a fraction of the current price. The marginal cost will continue to go up, but it’s much too high in the short term which is why I’m happy to take profits at these levels.

          • Just depends on your strategy. If you’re trading, the NAV issue matters less, as long as the ETF is tracking actual price movement closely.

          • Touchdown, I know of those risks, and it factored into the sell today. GBTC has traded at a premium since launch. The bigger issue for me is if a better product comes along that is better than GBTC (and trades on an exchange more legit like the NYSE) it can severely lag the BTC price. Greatest risk, imo.

        • Selling was a good move IMHO.
Headline on Yahoo home page today, “Why Joe Biden’s $3T Stimulus Package Could Add Fuel to Bitcoin’s Rally
Good indicator of nearing a peak whenever there are headlines.

Still waiting to move on CAT…………lol

          • Good move OOB. An infrastructure package is going to be early low hanging fruit with tons of support for this admin and congress. I expect a 1.5-2 trillion package for power infrastructure, Transpo and sewer/water.

          • NB, don’t forget the package will include a strong clean energy component too which should impact oil markets. With Saudi Arabia squeezing supply and the price of oil on the rise, stock positions in the oil sector could be very attractive. I have some investment in CDEV and it’s fine from sub $1 to $2.10 in the past 6-8 weeks and it appears it could hit anywhere between $3-$5 soon. I realize that oil is volitale, but looks like much room for growth especially with a new green deal on the horizon. Oil is on the rebound and when this stupid virus is under control and demand surges, there will be opportunity for further growth. .

        • Not sure why it would be Dems. But to the question: it’s very easy to regulate at the on/off ramps like Coinbase. IRS pulled all records a few years ago (under Republicans).

          • I believe it was Warren who was exploring regulations. This was back in March or April of last year. The article made it sound like she had a few senators behind her if I remember right. She says a lot of bullshit so who knows how serious it is, but thats really the last time I heard anything about it. Thats why I asked.

          • What would regulating it change though? I mean that would be a big blow to money launderers and other criminals and be a bit of a drag on law abiding people but tough to see that having a huge impact on the price of something that is growing 10x+ a year.

    • Weekends tend to be extreme moves, and it seems the pressure is down here, which I agree with. Even though I’m bullish on it, it was too much too fast. Need to retest low 30ks (33k maybe) before the next leg.

  13. Sounds like Boise is planning to announce their new coach fairly soon. Likely between Mont. St coach Choate and Oregon DC Andy Avalos.
Will be interesting to see how they shuffle the deck again in Eugene if it is Avalos. They can’t seem to hang onto a DC down there.

    • Surprised Moore isn’t a contender. Avalos’s Oregon defense has not been fantastic and the MSU coach has been average as an FCS coach.

Hate to say it, but I think BSU’s run of relevance is coming to an end.

      • Krol makes the obvious choice, I think Heyward is likely.
OTOH, how about Rocky Long disciple Zach Arnett? Bet he is considering leaving Leach in the lurch. Might fit the “tough guy” image Cristo goes for, and his Bulldog D showed improvement in his year there.

        • It will have to be Heyward. He was already passed up once when Avalon’s came on board. If they pass on him again, he bolts unless then double his salary or something. Heyward is the best recruiter that they have and they will feel like they can’t lose him, especially after Donte Williams to USC. They think recruiting is the all everything there. So it will be Heyward and the rest of the PAC-12 will rejoice as all know, he is one of the very best recruiters but absolutely one of the worst on-field coaches as his units have already been undisciplined, use bad technique, don’t understand simple concepts like leverage, and generally underperformed their star ratings.

        • Wasn’t coach Joe also being considered back when Heyward was passed up for Avolos?
And Coach Joe was also being considered by Arizona for their HC opening recently.
If they pick one of those 2 guys, the other is going to feel slighted. Maybe they’ll go with Co-DCs?

          • Isaac and suk talked about Joe today. Said he is a strong recruiter but not seen as a good coach. Said he is basically a recruiter. Made a good point Mario needs really good o and d coordinators because some of the other guys on the staff are not going to improve players through coaching once they arrive.

  14. Harbaugh re ups at half salary. Good deal for Michigan to keep him and getting value. Otherwise they’ll end up like Nebraska, forever searching for past glory.

    • Pretty underwhelming. He lost his starting spot at ecu no reason to think he will perform better at Oregon state. It would be one thing if he was a 300lber.

        • NB, do you know anything about this Justyn Martin one of the top QB recruits in the country that apparently has OSU and Cal on his final list? Do you know what the chances are for OSU to land him? I always appreciate your insights on Beaver recruiting so….

          • Seems Cal is the favorite to get him. If Greg Biggens is predicting it, you can pretty much count on it. Still a long way till 2022 signing day though, so I wouldnt put too much stock in an early commitment anyway

          • NB, thanks. I read his comments that he just loved Cal but didn’t seem to use the same level of endearment towards OSU. We’re set anyway for a pretty good stretch at QB but never hurts to have more potential quality talent at that position. You’re also right…there’s a lot of time left and early commitments don’t hold much weight anyway. Again, thanks.

I wonder how much coaches look at “untapped potential” in some of these portal transfers or is that even a thing when a player gets to that stage in his college career? I’m sure all coaches have some level of ego and think they can do better with a player, seeing something that can be improved upon with better coaching or scheme.

      • I’m with you, just putting everything in here that has a remote chance of happening.
So far, of the 22 potential transfer I’m watching, only Jordan Williams pops in the directory. But the rest all have at least some OSU connection. Bloomfield wasn’t in the directory when he committed, so it’s not a super reliable resource, but it’s something.

      • Did Williams have a prior connection to anybody at OSU? I’m trying to figure out the motivation? Is it to become a full-time starter to increase his NFL potential? Is he looking for more snaps?

        • I was looking back recently to see which of our coaches he follows and since when. Found that Smith was the only recent follow, but he has followed Bray/Tibesar/Cookus/Adams, all since the days when he was being recruited out of highschool a couple of years ago.

      • 1
        3

But he’s recruiting some of players isn’t he. If he has recruited some of the players and they’ve developed a relationship with him, it might affect their decision…i know they’ve got all the bling but sometimes a player will commit bc of a coach. I guess we’ll see…

        • 2
          1

          That was a good one.

Other thing to note that I’m guessing scares Nemec the most is the potential for a Avalos to take a couple of the position coach’s and promote them to dc/oc or such…. nemec would have a mental breakdown if anything happened to Oregon’s class

          • Boise would pay more for a dc than Oregon pays for safeties coach. Plus it’s an opportunity to have your own defense. You’d be crazy to not accept.

Boise state has 1 family with deep pockets too, that owner of Simplot is a big one, not Phil knight rich but not far behind. And that company is just as scummy if not more so than Phil knight and Howard shlescher those pricks.

    • For what it’s worth, Avalos was the primary recruiter for two of the 2021 commits and was not the secondary recruiter for any player. Surprised they signed 4 linebackers (3 I think inside lb) in this class and 4 offensive guards. When will some of these guys ever play? Don’t they have a young line already? I guess the new idea is try out for a team and if I’m not at the top of the depth chart I’ll go to plan B(eavers). Still could be that a player liked playing for Avalos’ defense though and will leave if the scheme or something changes.

OT: Saw the following headline: “Tennessee’s Jarrett Guarantano — once considered the nation’s No. 1 dual-threat QB — transferring to Washington State”

Don’t know anything about the kid, or how much he played at Tennessee, or if he can unseat the WSU starter, but thought his transfer might be of interest here.

      • Yes, they are being investigated for recruiting violations. Pruitt is on the hot seat and he is losing assistants like crazy. Fulmer looks like a fool for signing him to an extension, and word is Fulmer is trying to use the recruiting violations to can him and avoid the buyout.

      • The best part is the main recruit at the center of the investigation signed with Georgia, despite the “improper benefits” offered. You literally couldn’t pay him to play for Tennessee!

Yes, yes, I know. This is the SEC. Georgia just payed him more.

All free flow of information is choked by corporate elitists. Is Trump really the problem now?

Baseball season is drawing near and I’ve read some great reports about the beavers pitching staff and the development of some the player’s abilities at the plate. I’m anxious to see what kind of improvement has been made and how the beavs season unfolds providing there is a season. The pitching staff appears to be loaded with talent, depth and experience. It also sounds like the outfield will have plenty of talent and speed. I expect the infield to be solid defensively too. I’m anxious for the season to start. Go beavs!

      • 1
        4

Agreed but it was a transitional year and the hitting was just anemic but from what I’ve read the beavers have some excellent talent at the plate coming in. You’re right though as it all starts on the mound and that’s where the beavers strength will be. Since Yeskie has left, I expect there will be fewer injuries to the staff too.

      • 2
        5

He really didn’t have a lot of talent to work with in comparison to Casey’s teams. I think we’ll see dramatic improvement this season though it at least I’m hoping so…..

        • 5
          3

Yeah, but his decision making and his mindset (pro player and acting as their psychologist) were off, and they have nothing to do with talent.

          • 2
            9

You’re correct, it’s much different game at the college level than pro level so he’s got a big learning curve with the college game. As far as talent is concerned, he’s got to develop trust with his players and that’s an ongoing thing on order for them to buy into his coaching style and philosophy. I’m friends with John Sipple who is pretty close to the program being a former pitching great for the beavers, and he agrees that Mitch has a learning curve but also states the talent just wasn’t the last year. Time will tell….and hopefully it tells a much improved story over the very short season last year.

  18. 1
    5

From what I’ve read, Kevin Abel has returned to his 2018 performance and has fully recovered per Fall ball. Jake Pfennings is really supposed to be the guy with the mist dynamic stuff on the staff and we have some very experienced kids in the pen too. .Hitting should be much improved too with some new talent on the roster… Hoping the season won’t be interrupted by covid like basketball though as both men’s and women’s teams might be shutting the season down from what I’m hearing….

    • 6
      1

I just don’t see a lot of wins happening on the women’s side so it’s probably a good idea. Only wins would be against Cal and UW. The mountain teams have both improved and I don’t see them beating any of the other teams so probably a good idea to shut down. Regroup and keep everyone healthy. This year doesn’t count anyway. Hopefully they are protecting their high risk player with her heart condition.

  19. OT: Poyer playing today, go Bills!

Didn’t quite realize the numbers Bills QB Allen put up:

“Josh Allen. During the six-game winning streak that Buffalo carries into the franchise’s first home playoff game in a quarter-century, the Bills have averaged 36.5 points per game. That’s yet another reflection of Allen’s dramatic improvement this season, which pushed him into the MVP conversation. Allen passed for more than 4,500 yards with 37 touchdowns, while running for eight more scores and adding a receiving TD.

The numbers say much about the additional layer of polish for the third-year pro, who has impressed with his command of the nuances. Sure, it helps to add a phenomenal playmaker to the mix in Stefon Diggs, but somebody had to throw all of the passes that allowed Diggs to lead the league with 127 catches.”

He was viewed I think as a strong armed QB well suited for the Buffalo weather, but a a bit of a risk coming from a smaller school, lower level of competition, with a high ceiling. Fun to see him doing well and hope Hodgins is catching his passes next year.

        • Just needs to get a chair better in the pocket. I think back to the year Russel Wilson played through a knee injury, ended up being a blessing in disguise for him.

    • Poyer just caused what should have been a game-ending fumble but the replay refs (incorrectly in my opinion) let the call on the field of no fumble stand.

  20. Back to baseball for a moment, has anyone seen or heard anything in the wire about the start of the season, schedule, etc.? Also, can’t wait till I put my mitts on that Dennis Erickson vintage Block O hat that OOBie saved for me.

    • We’ll probably hear an official announcement from the Pac-12 sometime soon. Almost every conference (other than the Pac-12) has finalized the rules around conference and non-conference scheduling. The final schedule probably won’t be finalized for at least another month I’m guessing.

    • 3
      4

Exactly…that was a fumble…the receivers knee was off the ground when buffalo touched him..glad it turned out the way it did though.

10 potential candidates shown on that other site for ducks DC but I didn’t see Brady Hoke as one of them. I think they should go back to him.

  22. 6
    3

Anyone heard any updates on the basketball programs health status? They are getting passed up in the world of relevance right now with Covid. Players? Coaches? Other team the issue? Last I heard Stanford caused the men’s program to shut down but haven’t heard anything about the women. Everything is so hush hush

  23. JS said they’re looking to add a few more transfers: DL, DB, and RB.

The first two seem obvious. The last doesn’t bode well for our RB depth. You have to think Fenwick and Baylor figure in significantly, but if Lowe, Newell and Madison can’t get carries, position changes or transfers seem likely. That or there’s an interested guy that’s just too good to pass on, but that seems less likely.

    • I heard that in the presser and wondered if that was before fenwick was official. I think it was right after it was announced but I don’t think he can talk about him yet so maybe he was implying they were adding him. Another possibility is one of the guys already is intending on transferring and needs to be replaced. I know tyler said in a post game that transferring isn’t in his mind and never has been.

Madison played some qb after injuries out of necessity I think. Put your best athlete at qb and let him make plays kind of thing.

      • 1
        1

        Tyler should transfer and should
Not be top three on the depth chart (no disrespect, he is a d1 athlete). If he is then I’m guessing the younger guys don’t know the pass protection.

    • Perhaps Lowe will be more of a utility, multi-threat player rather than a true RB?

Here’s how Angry rated Newell: “Isaiah Newell — Surprisingly difficult to rate since we don’t know his position for sure, and there isn’t a lot of film on him (strange given his prestigious offer sheet). I’d put him low 4-star/high 3-star. If I had a 3.5 rating I’d put him there. So I’ll just make him my #1 3-star prospect. Rare combination of size, agility, and nimble feet (looks like Fred Astaire out there!). Speed looks good. Maybe not breakaway, but good speed.”

Not sure how he rated Madison?

So that could leave Baylor, Fenwick, and incoming Collins.

Sometimes for even non-football reasons, things don’t work out for young-student athletes and changes are necessary. Maybe this is whey JS sees a need at RB?

      • I ranked him as a CB:

Arnez Madison – the worst of the 3-star guys for me. Not seeing any huge upside here. Runs upright, on film his INTs are all bad passes, and he has a tall/lanky body not really suited for CB. Washington offered him, so we’re not alone. Hopefully that means he can play in the Conference. I see a backup, though.

Newell was a weird one…best attribute was his feet. Maybe he’s not progressing? Haven’t heard much positive about him.

      • “Taron Madison – He’s our highest ranked recruit on most sites, but I’m not seeing anything special. 3-star is correct, but some downside here. I’m not sure where he ultimately plays, but to me his skill set looks best suited to CB or somewhere in the secondary. He can be better there than on offense.”

Both Madison and Newell were highly ranked guys that didn’t look like pure RB prospects on film. They’re good athletes with decent size, the kind of players that would usually end up at LB or S if they don’t pan out at RB. FWIW I saw Madison was named Scout Team POW at least once this season. Newell was supposedly the only RB we really recruited last year.

Rewatching their film, Newell is a big guy with good balance and good feet, but he doesn’t have great burst and doesn’t use his size at all. Instead of running people over, he wants to dance. Madison has quick feet, too, and looks faster. Still, for a big guy, you’d expect him to be more physical.

As Obj pointed out, maybe things just aren’t working out for other reasons.

  24. The NFL must be hard up for viewers. Im currently watching the Bears/saints game on….Nickelodeon. Yes the children’s channel advertised all week that they were showing a game with all their popular characters making cameos. My kids naturally got sucked in because tv ads work on dummies.
Also watched Nall get stuffed on a 3rd and 3, nice to see him play at least.

  25. NB, saw your Twitter post of the Purdue RB entering the portal. Sounds like Purdue will be lacking RB depth. They are our season opening opponent so thought it was worth noting.

    • On a sad note, I have just been notified by a reliable source that The Great Swammi passed away unexpectedly from a broken heart due to so many down votes. I’m thinking about creating a Go Fund Me Account for the poor bastard. Please let me know if anyone else is interested in contributing. RIP Swammi, you were well liked and much respected. LMAO.

  26. A bit off topic, but I remember a while back someone was talking about a relative of their’s (maybe their Mom) was making and selling Beaver logo masks. My wife bought me a Beaver mask from “Designs by Marie”, just wondering if it’s the same person.

  27. Really hoping for an impact DT transfer it sux they missed out on William’s. If they could get a 4 star caliber transfer there I feel like the impact on the D would be tremendous. I honestly believe it would be enough that they probably would’ve won most of those close games. Anyone else feel like that or am I delusional.?

  28. Anyone else forget the championship game is this evening? Anyone else bored with same 4 or 5 teams being in it every year? I’m guessing viewership is going to be way down this year.

      • So did I! I was actually turning on the news, and there it was. Fortunately my dear wife quickly changed her dinner plan and produced turkey burgers and a tossed salad on a lap tray. I have to say, watching those two teams is different then watching PAC 12 and Alabama was a level above THE Ohio State University (as they like to say).

    • Ya it would be cool if Cincy would’ve made it in or someone else like that. Hopefully with the transfer portal talent will be spread out more and we’ll start to see some other teams in it. Also I think they’ll expand it to 8 teams hopefully.

Guess ill root for Ohio State. The lesser of two evils.

    • The way to watch the championship game tonight is to watch the coaches film room feed where they have current coaches analyze the game in real time.

They are able to point out tendencies or tells pretty quickly. Like how a guard lines up means a certain running play, no matter what the rest of the formation looks like. They can point out when other coaches might go for fakes, certain play calls, etc. They talk about coaching strategies, player substitutions, schemes. Why a starter might not be playing at an important time. Gives a lot of insight to the game and super helpful when watching games later.

    • Hard to watch. Those aren’t bad athletes out there obviously, and spreading the game out has changed things, but its not the best viewing product. If Alabama wanted to, they could go off for 60+ tonight.

  29. See the Beavs offered some new players. One of whom it’s his first d1 offer. Moving forward, should Smith be taking class sizes of 15 or so and fill in with transfers and JC guys? From my understanding this eligible right away after a transfer is a one year rule. It seems many of our better players have come through the transfer portal. Alabama recruits really good and they kick everyone’s ass. Maybe we can catch up!!

  30. 1
    2

This is boring and predictable. Bama should be playing The Jaguars with Luton as the starter. Bama could probably win that game too.

  31. Alabama is just in a league of their own. I don’t think this is an indictment of college football as much as it is a testament to how good that program is. Everyone can cheat and get good recruits. Everyone can pay guys under the table. They have to recruit to Tuscaloosa, which isn’t even as nice a city to live in as Columbus.

I am curious as to whether they can keep it at this level after Saban retires. They went through a stretch from 2000-2007 where they were very mediocre. I recently read an article about their loss to Louisiana-Monroe during his first year there.

      • I doubt it. There’s nothing inherently better about Alabama. Just like Bowden, Paterno, Carroll, Chipster, etc. it’s unlikely a legendary coach’s success will be emulated by whoever comes behind him, even at programs that can throw big money at the next guy.

  32. what was OSU at OSU a few years back under anderson? 60+ to 35? this could be similar.

Pierce showed serious speed in that game though…

  33. 1
    1

Looking at the stats, Alabama has 621 yards of offense.

For entertainment purposes, might be time to start making defensive plays worth points. An INT or fumble recovery? 3+ plus you get possession. A TFL 5 yards, 2 points…

Oh, it was 77-31 when Ohio State defeated OSU….Blount the starting QB.

      • Purdue’s defense has been kind of a mess, and now the coaches on that side are getting the boot. Beavs will be more dialed in and Purdue out of sync. I plan on being there – Beavs by 14.

        • “Kind of a mess” would be a generous description of our defense, too.

Purdue did beat Iowa this year, so they shouldn’t be taken likely. I think it will be a good game. I’m considering driving over, but given our record in away non-conference games, I’m worried it would be a waste of time.

  34. 2

My youngest son asked me how come college football is so unfair, he said “at least bad NFL teams get the higher draft picks”. I didn’t have an answer.

    • Reduce the number of scholarships per school to something like 53 (same as an NFL roster). Or, pay the players and implement something like a hard salary cap. (I don’t know how you would do the latter to keep things like endorsements from boosters out of the picture.)
      Spread the talent around.

      • Alabama would have 50 5-star walk ons, though.

This from a 2011 discussion on AB about this very issue:

“And how can you make a level playing field when there are always going to be private donations involved.”

Handicaps. Teams in the top 5 lose x scholarships per year. Or, if you don’t like penalizing a good showing, give teams outside the top 25 five extra per year. There are plenty of ways to handicap schools that are naturally fertile. Also, revenue sharing.

I’d rather see a small % of revenue sharing over pay for play – the latter would be the final nail.

        • I had a nice long post that I accidentally closed…basically if you look every 5 years going back to 1990, there’s an average of 70% turnover in the top 10. Even if you look at 2010, the CFP would have been Auburn, Nike, TCU, Stanford.

Coaches have 5-10 year windows where they sustain programs. Beyond that it’s very rare to have sustained success. The perceived competition problem has only been an issue with Alabama and Clemson in the last 10 years. There’s been a relatively high level of turnover throughout the rest of the rankings, even during that time.

Saban and Swinney’s dominance is staggering and they’ve definitely benefited from more national recruiting, but there’s no reason to think once Saban retires football will continue to have the same kind of competition problem. Programs with lots of money and prestige fail to hire the coach that can take them to the promised land all the time (see Texas, Michigan, Tennessee, FSU, Miami…)

          • Also, Clemson and Alabama were mid-tier P5 programs before their respective coaches showed up. Traditionally the NFL has stolen these coaches away and robbed them of their college mojo (e.g. Harbaugh). It just hasn’t happened with those two.

        • Those 50 5-star walk-ons would have to pay for their college and get none of the benefits scholarship athletes get. The price of college is a significant dis-incentive to play for a particular team.

          • Free college coming soon.

I used to be against it, but after seeing what stupidity does to a Country, it’s the price we have to pay.

          • I think this would actually be detrimental to college football. There are a lot of guys that really do play to get into college and don’t have any hope of making the NFL. Take away those guys and the talent pool shrinks, which should benefit the teams at the top as the talent pyramid narrows.

          • 3
            1

Free college is a bad idea. When everyone has a college degree then its not a marker for further success and will muddy the waters of haves and have nots. Middle management will need masters degrees and night shift mangers at McDonald’s will need 4yr business management degrees. But you won’t make anymore then what that position paid before free college and then tack on the inflation. The wealth gap will widen.
If they want to get serious about it, trade schools are the future. Green new deal? start training solar and wind technicians, we’ll need electricians, engineers, heavy construction, Welders, pipe fitters, lubrication techs, millwrights the list goes on. This also includes the automation of our industries. Lots of need there. I know I’ll be directing my kids that way as they get onto highschool.

          • When I think of free college I think free vocational training for the skills you listed should absolutely be included. That said I still think everyone would benefit from an associates degree. Looking back it would be crazy to have just quit learning at 18, now a good number of folks don’t need school to learn but a lot of people (myself more than I’d like to admit) occupy themselves with pretty brainless activities.

          • Well by “free” are they talking associates degree or 4 years at a university? I assumed they were talking about a 4 year. Most community Colleges have some sort of trade training attached, I would be fine with it if thats the plan.

          • “Free college coming soon.

I used to be against it, but after seeing what stupidity does to a Country, it’s the price we have to pay”

            This just in:

Only people who have gone to college are smart.

            Liberalelitesayswhat?

          • Here’s the problem with “free” vocational school. The gov will only give the $$ to community colleges that require 2 years of school and 57 bullshit classes that in no way apply to the vocational training.

I’ve taught vocational training at the community college level and at the private school level. The 3 month $7500 school graduate directly competes with the 2 year $20k+ community college graduate. The technical geometry class is the only thing that the community college has over the private vocational school.

It’s a great theory and I’m all for it. Technical trades are screaming for bodies. But the federal government ruins everything. So I have no high hopes.

          • WFO, I don’t think learning things that doesn’t directly apply to your trade is worthless. From talking with a lot of folks in trades it is apparent that a lot of them could use more training in certain areas that are ancillary to their profession. Don’t get my wrong lots of smart, good folks but certain writing and communication skills are at times lacking.

No one is saying you have to go to college to be smart or educated but a lot of people think graduating HS means you are done learning, pushing those people into a few more years of education seems super worthwhile to me.

FWIW I advocate 2 free years college being an associates degree or technical training.

          • Not everyone who doesn’t attend college is stupid. The problem is more with critical thinking and logic, and those are taught in college more than they are at lower levels. We could just teach people logic at a lower level.

And stop calling me a liberal. Not even close, and they’re already beginning to annoy me before they’re in.

  35. Staff still seems to be pursuing kickers pretty hard. Kind of weird to me with Hayes being relatively young unless they just don’t feel totally confident in him. Maybe these are PWO offers?

  36. Yeah I get too anxious doing stuff like that. This was just a hobby for the summer. Nows its kind of getting serious. I will admit I’m over my head right now.

So the women will play their first game in 29 days when they face Arizona. As I wrote in ’12 or so, college football is dying. Same handful of teams = death of entire sport.

College Football Playoff title game drew 18.7 million viewers total, the smallest audience for a national title game in 23 years.

    • Looking at conference champs in P5 conferences, the lack of competitive balance the last few years is striking. P12 has the most parity by far.

OU has owned the Big 12; ISU is trending up (until Campbell leaves), who knows about TT
tOSU has owned the Big 10 the last few years, but there was a lot of parity before that (PSU, Wisconsin, MSU)
Alabama has owned the SEC with a few interruptions from LSU and UGA
Clemson has owned the ACC; UNC seems to be trending up and ND’s involvement has made it more interesting

Taking a step back, general interest in the sport is sustained by narrative. The narrative around different programs is different, so when you have the same ones every year, it’s just the same story over and over. There used to be more interesting stories with teams that played different styles. Now it’s basically all the same. Heck, the top teams almost all wear the same color now!

All sports have seen their ratings of championships drop to their lowest levels this past year. And recent national events overshadowed the game as well.

      • Yeah, I’d like to compare how far ratings are down relative to other sports to come to the conclusion college football is dying vs. all televised sports dying. Think I saw hockey was down bigly too and they were pretty good at avoiding politics and social justice.

    • 3
      1

Sports aren’t that important anymore. Maybe college kids still watch football all day with their roommates as I did, but there are not many other things I’d rather spend my time doing and holding my attention for an entire game is not likely. The political crossover is also exhausting, mostly by the ESPNs of the world that have their pregame guys all chiming in with their political thoughts. Maybe that’s appropriate but I can get that elsewhere, if I want to.

        • 1
          2

Watching sports makes me bored, lol. I think I’d following more sports if it was easier to turn on the radio and listen to a game. I know there are apps, etc but it seems more work than it’s worth. We use to travel during spring break. I loved listening to March Madness on the radio. It was almost better than watching games live. I sound old.

        • Not sure if ratings account for people watching through different channels like apple tv, youtube tv, espn+, etc.

But there are many more ways to view a game now and I’d also add that the number of people who have cable is declining as well.

          • It seems like cutting the cord so to speak has gained more and more steam. 10 years ago streaming sports was a headache. So much buffer and lag. For me it has only been a few years since streams were reliable enough to dump cable. I held on to cable for a long time solely because of sports. I am not that worried about lesser quality for movies or shows but not being able to tell if a guy caught a ball or not in real time because of stream quality was what kept me on cable longer than I should have been.

    • even in a perfect world, this doesn’t make sense. Some conference shuffling makes sense for the acc and big12 but G5 schools are unlikely to make a jump to P5 conferences. Always about money and reputation.

    • The Knight Commission recommendation of splitting football off as a separate entity would definitely help with realignment. Conferences could just be football-based and not have to worry about basketball, etc. or academics (that topic came up a lot around the last P12 expansion).

  40. Very off topic. Any have experience with Redfin? More so the part about someone requesting a showing on their site and ending up being a total creep and trying to look at your house that is for sale? My wife came home today and “caught” a Redfin agent trying to enter our home using the key box and was with his “client” who had a backpack and showed up on foot. Our house is under contract so no idea how it was even approved for them to do a showing. I’m curious how easy it is just to “request a showing” on a site like Redfin. Seems like some major security issues. Our realtor never was contacted by Redfin for the showing request so then how did the agent get the approval to be able to show the house…maybe always ask potential buyers to have a letter showing proof of funds so you don’t get a creep trying to enter your home.

      • Haha, good point. Just trying to think of how to make it a little tougher for someone to just roam around your house. My wife followed the backpack dude out of the neighborhood as he continued to wander about smoking cigs. I asked the Redfin dude, did this guy look like he was going to be buying a half a million dollar house? Not to judge but yes to judge. There has to be some sort of process.

      • I guess when you request a showing through redfin they then confirm the showing with the listing agent. Our agent told them it was under contract and did not approve the showing but yet someone it went on the redfin agents schedule to come and do the showing. Someone messed up and/or is not telling the truth. Our realtor reported the redfin agent but I feel like it’s more of a redfin company problem. It could have been very bad if was home and they tried entering.

        • Ah. Well things happen…

As the Breakfast Club poignantly said, “screws fall out all the time, the world’s an imperfect place.”

  41. Saw a dead body today on my lunch break, while driving down 82nd ave in Portland.
Just laying there in the middle of a parking lot with a sheet partially covering it. Police and fire truck were on the scene. No idea what happened. I’d recommend delaying your shopping trip to the Deseret Industries thrift store for another day, if you were planning to go there this afternoon.

    • I used to live in that area. The beginning of the war zone of southeast Portland. Couldn’t get into my house or block because some guy had thrown pipe bombs and ordinance all over the area as he was being chased by cops….cocaine is a helluva drug!

    • 1
      1

I was driving south on 82nd a few months ago and encountered a huge backup starting at Foster. As I finally reached Flavel, there was a lady pushing her shopping cart in the middle of the right-hand lane while flipping everyone off. She looked like she was having a good time. I ran her over (just kidding). You never know what you’re going to find in deep SE PDX!

      • I belueve it. That same specific area by Flavel I got stuck in a similar traffic backup and a guy was driving his rascal scooter down the right hand lane as if he was in a car. Not a care in the world.

  42. A few more roster updates from JS:
-All opt-outs are expected back for the Spring
-Roberts, Gumbs, and Morris are all expected to participate
-Gebbia “won’t be close to participating”
-Sounds like at least 25% of the incoming class is already on campus, if not more

  43. Found out today I’m already eligible for the covid vaccine and can set up an appointment now.
Has anybody here already had it? Curious how it went. Any allergic reaction?

  44. 1
    1

Last Redfin Post…turns out our realtor is to blame and had dates mixed up. Still don’t agree with the lack of vetting to assure someone should be touring my house to potentially buy it but that’s not the point. Redfin has had good customer service. Just glad everyone was fine and the wife didn’t get too freaked out. Thanks for listening to my rants.

  45. I’m finding the scheduling a vaccine appointment is similar to trying to track down the hot concert ticket on ticketmaster.
You go through the hoops of answering the questions to show you’re eligible and input your code, and then they give you 1 or 2 openings. But by the time you choose an appointment time, it’s already been snagged by somebody else.
Them it’s back to square 1 and you try again and again. So far, no success here.

How many spots are left for the football team? I’m guessing around 5. What would be on the wishlist? The obvious is a DT or 2 aside from that I would say DE, and then secondary. A big time OL would be great especially tackle. Could probably use another big wideout.

Smith said they could be looking for a RB but i don’t see it unless Madison, and Newell just aren’t getting it. I think they’re in a good spot right now with no real immediate holes except for maybe DT. It’s a good opportunity to try to get big impact guys or add depth without reaching.

Here’s to hoping for a big time transfer that sticks!

  47. 3
    2

Got my first shot of the vaccine today. I had to wait at the facility for 15 minutes after the shot just in case I had an adverse reaction. I have a little soreness in my arm like a flu shot would do but other than that no other issue.

  48. This looks like a team that has tuned out the coaching. The defense reminds me of the Washington Generals playing the Globetrotters.

  49. Hey NB, not sure if you saw this, but the USC de commit OT, Saia Makai, that da Beavs were after committed to my Gophers. Is it just me, or does it seem JS is getting the leftovers for his OL recruits. We have great line coach, so I don’t get why we are not getting some prime targets.

    • Same story different year
For both of our lines, the recruiting keeps falling back on the Beavs taking the leftovers of the table scraps

    • It’s a numbers game. The pool for top-end OL talent is smaller than skill positions because of the requisite body type AND there are more spots to fill.

The best strategy for OSU is probably to go quantity over quality and hope enough of those bodies pan out while the ones that don’t move on after a few years to open up new spots.

    • Less stress. Ha! Guessing he wanted a new challenge. He might want to try Angry’s edibles and dosage if he doesn’t want to have stress-related health issues again.

It occurs to me if he had come to the PAC, the conference would get more attention and maybe be a bigger threat to make play offs.

I suppose right now Shaw and Cristobal are the PAC coaches with the biggest reps, w/Herm Edwards s kind of NFL novelty that hasn’t done too much yet? Wuite a few younger coaches w/out a lot of accomplishments.

      • Cristobal doesn’t really have much of a reputation outside of the Oregon brand.

Chip probably still has the most name recognition, but it’s definitely been tarnished by his NFL experience. Herm is up there, as well. Kyle Whittingham has been around long enough that he’s probably up there, as well.

Yeah, he was the golden local boy at FIU at first, but his act wore thin. I remember the AD took some heat for letting him go, but his record was 20 games under .500 and regressing. He made an interesting comeback through the assistant ranks working at high-level programs.

Hadn’t watched one iota of men’s hoops this season until this game. DVR’d it and turned it on this morning after I got home. Took less than 10 real minutes before I fast forwarded on warp speed to see the final score. Absolutely pathetic.

I just watched 8 minutes of basketball. The most unathletic, slowest, gang that couldn’t shoot straight let alone even take a good shot team since the Ritchie Mckay or Jimmy Anderson years get absolutely buttfucked by the most unathletic, slowest Arizona team I’ve seen in decades.

How in the fuck Wayne Tinkle still has a job is inexcusable. Tuning out for the rest of the season just like football. I know how this is going to end.

I’ve suffered through so many losing seasons my patience and give a fuck meter with ALL things beaver sports related has reached a point where I just no longer really care.

I’ll tune in for the beginning of baseball season. If they sack up and actually play one.

      • 6
        1

Given the crappy teams Big Tinks has put on the court, I was a little surprised to read that this was the worst home loss during his tenure. I doubt there’s much appetite for change this season, but something has to happen. Maybe give someone like Gary Payton a shot, even if it’s just for the interest and hype? Men’s Hoops is a dead program walking.

        • I actually think there is some talent there but it just has not developed and Tinkle doesn’t know how to scheme for the players he has. Even a team with “bad” players can be decent with good coaching. The beavs will always need a coach to do more with less.

          • 3
            1

I thought I read where Lil’ Tinks and the Thompson Bros. were Top 100 recruits. Seems like that was Big Tinks’ best chance to do something and it produced the same mediocre results. That goes to your point about coaching. We saw it the season Tres was injured, they went from average to god awful with no depth. This season has the same feel.

          • Amazing that recruiting services had ET as a top 40 recruit in the 2017 class. Espn had him at #41, Rivals had him as #36 and 247 had him as #25(!)
So either Tinkle and staff are just that bad at player development, or the services were way off, or some combination of the 2. I’m going with C

          • We seem to be competing with Providence on just about every recruit these days, so I think they’re a good program comp. They’re way ahead of us, at least for the past few years. I don’t think it’s a matter of talent.

Tinkle’s average finish in the conference is 8th. That will never get you into the tourney. The one year we finished 4th (which brings the average up) we still didn’t make the tourney. 6-7 years is more than enough to prove what his program will look like. It’s obviously time to move on.

I can’t believe we had the chance to hire Eric Musselman and passed. Who knows what happened with Ben Howland. Maybe Randy Bennett would still consider us?

          • 4
            1

Tinkle is just that bad as a developer. Period. Those three would have been better with another coach. Stevie now in Europe and Tres will languish in the G league for a while before heading there. Ethan will go there immediately

    • 10

I don’t think it’s fair to put Jimmy Anderson in the same sentence Richie. There’s not a more loyal beav than Jimmy and not many have done as much in their lives to contribute to our legacy. Ralph doesn’t have the level of success he had without Jimmy who was primarily responsible for running practices, game planning and recruiting during that era. The problem Jimmy had was he didn’t have himself as an assistant. Hard to replace a legend and he struggled to surround himself with top notch staff but he’s an incredible person and tremendous coach that doesn’t get the respect he deserves for his contributions to Beavs basketball. Agree that Tinkle and Richie are crap though. My 2 cents.

Does anybody have the raising Reser info that was shared at the OSU Senate meeting yesterday? I guess there’s a drawing of the proposed design as well as construction info. But the project hasn’t been greenlit yet. Was told the new West side design is a complete replacement of the old stands and would look similar in style to the East side, but would feature 4 tiers of seating with less depth to each tier.
I’m picturing something like what they did at Providence Park in Portland, but without the roof and a press box instead.
If anybody has the pics, please share.

    http://www.nextportland.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/providence_park_dar1_img_06.jpg

    • Sounds about right. Pretty similar to what a lot of stadiums are doing. Providence park is a good example. USC and WSU did similar renovations. Costs may even keep dropping due to COVID. Might as well just ask to throw some pork into the stimulus bills to fund construction. It’ll stimulate the economy!

  52. Angry, I lost track of the crypto conversation that was higher up in this thread. I’m new to investing in crypto, where do you guess a good buy in point for bitcoin would be?

      • Thanks for the tip, I’ll keep an eye on it. Any thoughts on other crypto like ethereum? Worth doing or stick with the aloha in BTC?

        • I actually think ETH protocol has more practical uses, like voting, smart contracts, etc, but in terms of financial uses I don’t love it. BTC has a lot of problems as a currency, too…very slow to transact being the biggest one. So it’s a speculative “store of value.” The underlying blockchain is extremely valuable. The coins themselves? Not worth much at all. But the market thinks they are, so…

I have a theory it’s a lot of old guys and computer illiterate people getting in now. Because if you’re IT savvy you can see there’s not much value here. At the end of the day it’s a protocol, and we’re not paying jack for other internet protocols.

          • Lots of people like to speculate. Pre-COVID I always liked to chat with Uber drivers and at least 50% of them consider themselves traders. One guy told me he had sold everything to move from the South to San Jose (never having been there), but had a change of heart and invested everything into small cap, alternative cryptos. He was avoiding paying his bills so he could invest in worthless stuff. Almost all of them were convinced they would get rich trading cryptos if they could figure out the right system and time it right. I tried to give them all a more conservative investing crash course…hopefully at least one listened!

Lately, institutional buyers and newsletter writers have been hyping crypto more and more. These guys have amazing sway with individual investors in the top 10-15%. I think the average investor knows just enough about crypto to be dangerous, but doesn’t know enough to understand long-term value.

How long until Lance Leipold gets poached by a P5 program?

It took him a few years, but his Buffalo teams have been really impressive lately. Looking through PFF grades, Buffalo players are in the top 30 at almost every position, which tells me they’re incredibly well coached. If you can win in Buffalo, you can win anywhere with the right kind of player. I do think certain coaches excel more with underdog-type players and don’t do as well handling the egos that come along with the higher-rated recruits.

      • You also have to take into account recruiting cachet, of which OSU has considerably more than UB. A P12 athlete should have a similar chance of earning high marks against P12 competition as a MAC athlete against MAC competition. It’s not like Buffalo has been recruiting above their level. They’ve had middle of the conference recruiting classes the last few years and their 2020 class ranked last in the MAC!

I’m not saying Buffalo is the best team in the country. There are plenty of factors at work and this is just one way of looking at the data. But PFF is grading the success of each individual player on every play and that’s not a system you can cheat just by being a better athlete than the other guy. Even teams with really good records at similar levels (e.g. Ball State, SJSU), don’t have NEAR the grades Buffalo players do.

Leipold is 24-10 the last 3 years at BUFFALO. That deserves respect if his six DIII National Championships don’t.

Anybody know what’s going on at Goss Stadium? The outfield wall is gone, replaced by (i’m guessing temporary) cyclone fencing.

  55. Has anyone figured out the total amount of players entered into the transfer portal? Is it extraordinarily high this year? What is the likelihood of all these players actually being able to find a new school to play? How many will not be able to find a new roster/school with available scholarships or do a lot of these guys just become walk-ons after transferring?

Very curious for solid info after watching all of Nicebeav twitter feed about the next 8-10 guys entering the portal nearly daily.

      • He actually looks very good. Will be a great pass rushing and run stopping outside linebacker. Should be pretty good in coverage also, as he seems to be a good receiver also. Only downside to this kid is his top end speed. His initial burst looks outstanding. Could be a really good find

      • Saw mention that he’s a mission kid?
If so, makes sense why they felt they had enough 2021 scholarships for him. He wont count this year or next.

    • Three offers and the Beavs were able to swoop in and get him. I guess all we can do is spin it as the staff was able to see something in him not many others did.

      • Seems like a good player to me honestly. And with an additional 2 years to develop his body could be a really good pickup. Worse case he comes back out of shape-no harm no foul. Semisi gives me some hope this upcoming season, so we will see.

Signing a player that is going on a mission is more of a show than anything. 2 years we will see if he is even on the team, and 4 years it will take before this young man is making an impact.

        • Riley sharp was on that mode. He has turned out alright!

Most of our recruits are higher ranking/quality than the top 50% we used to get. A few hidden gems/development are fine with me

          • I don’t recall Riley sharp being an impact player this year. Did he opt out? I know he made some plays last year on a terrible defense. I hope every player turns out and has success. But it seems we are still picking up some borderline power 5 talent.

          • None of the EDGE rushers were impact players this year. I am still holding that the lack of size on the interior was hugely detrimental to their ability to get in the backfield.

He had 7 tackles in 10 tackles in 5 games. 2019 he had 36 tackles and 3 sacks in 10 games.

Ham had 23 tackles in 7 games and zero sacks. 2019 he had 62 tackles and 22.5 TOL and 14 sacks (11 games).. 2018 he had 53 tackles 12.5 TOL and 2.5 sacks.

McCartan had 6 tackles in 4 games. 2019 he had 34 tackles, 5.5 TOL and 3.5 sacks.

All of our best EDGE had absolute shit 2020’s. Our best pressure on the front 5 was Hughes-Murray who managed 23 tackles , 4 TOL and a sack.

          • Hopefully Whitley is healthy enough and in good enough shape to make an impact. Hopefully they get a big time transfer as well. I’m going to keep beating that drum.

Help is already on campus for OSU WBB team with the addition of Talia von Oelhoffen, 5* star recruit out of Tri Cities. Once she clears Covid-19 protocols, she’ll be eligible immediately. Really dynamic player in HS averaging over 30 PPG. I’ve seen limited videos of her and she is an exceptional passer, very good shooter and ball handler. She reminds of Slocum but I think she has potentially more upside bc of her size and also passing skills. I’m anxious to see her play and I hope Coach Rueck gets her some PT to start developing experience. There will most likely being some growing pains as their are with most freshman, but Talia’s ceiling is high so we shall see.

    • 1
      1

Can’t ever recall something like this happening before. A recruit joins mid season and is eligible to play. Free season though so her development should accelerate faster than if she played another hs or aau season.

      • 1
        3

Due to covid shutting down HS ball….but you’re right in that getting her early PT will accelerate her development. I think she’s going to be very, very good…..think Slocum good or better in due time.

    • It’s been the deferred pay for play model for years. A big advantage for the schools that have “exclusive” gear and large fanbases willing to shell out big money for gear.
Sure, any school can get away with it, like OSU players do sell some of their Nike gear after finishing college. But schools like oregon where they get the newest and shinest gear have that carrot dangling in front of recruits.
Would you rather sell your OSU sneakers for a few hundred dollars a pop, or sell your duck Tinker Hatfield Jordan exclusives for several thousand a pop?
How much do you suppose actually gets counted as income for the former athletes and gets taxed?

  57. 3

I’m not big on Facebook, but I noticed since the MBB shit-fest against Arizona my homepage is filled with positive feeds (or whatever you call them) about the team from the official site. I must have subscribed at some point? It’s laughable. Are they doing a preemptive strike? I’m not sure anybody has the energy to care, but just stop. It doesn’t mean shit that the team is “third in assists in league play”. Whoever comes up with these should have a career in politics.

      • 2
        4

Problem is, they finished second by a lot. The beavers have some talent but compared to Zona’s talent they looked like an NAIA school…Cats have some outstanding players. I’m still amazed how Reichle starts or even plays in the PAC 12. And the “prolific” scorer from Cali for the Beavers is so inconsistent shooting. Thompson’s game really hasn’t improved much from his entire career at OSU. if you can’t bring in better talent, this is what you get. With just very few exceptions, players do not seem to improve their game under tinkle and that’s on mostly the coach. Time to course correct and bring in a guy that can recruit and get the most out of the talent he’s got to work with.

    • Also if you’ve ever seen the movie little big league they have a wonderful stats guy in there. “He leads the league in batting avg vs left handers at home in the eighth inning!”.

  58. I think we’re close to having another Dam Right tweet from Smith. If it happens today, it’s most likely a local PWO Tight End, originally from California.
I’ll post the name later after it’s been announced.

    • On 2nd glance, he may be more of a tall WR than a short TE.
Could see him develop as either, but without getting to play a senior season, it’s hard to say how he looks now vs his junior year film, which was mostly WR and some defense.

    • I was a doubter also Beav in Ohio, but they proved us wrong. I expect Ariz will be all over ASU tho — their bigger team seems about as quick as those ASU guards.

      • Lucas hit some shots tonight, Silva gave them an extra big body, Thompson had a solid second half and beavs finally win a close game. ASU biggest issue is a lack of length but they do have some decent talent….just not enough. Despite the big loss to Arizona, beabs have lost 3-4 close games this year so maybe this gets them going….or maybe not.

      • I’ll try to summon the courage to watch a game. Does Tinkle still do that bit where beavs score and he immediately calls a time-out? Imo interrupting game flow.

        • 4
          2

LOL, I think he may have done that once in the second half possibly? I remember a weird time out. I was watching off and on, missed the first ten minutes.

  59. 1
    1

Anyone try to watch WBB vs AZ? Sure, the PAC is a media outfit…….but the broadcast quality is just as bad as the announcers. I prefer Ron Callan anyway and he is doing a good job using whatever stream he gets. Gals can’t seem to overcome poor RB’s and, of course, TO’s.

BTW: checked in on the previous thread, wow, over 1,000 comments; pretty sure all the political problems must have been solved by now.
    GO BEAVS!

First time Rueck has had a losing record overall and in conference in a while. I thought they would have kept it closer with all the prep time and fresher legs

      • I don’t really follow WBB. What the hell happened? I keep hearing about 5-star recruits. Are they not playing like it? I know Slocum left, that had to leave a hole. Football better improve next season or we may end up with nothing at the top end of the conference.

        • 2
          9

Well look, goforth is a freshman, Samuel was a 4* and she’s a freshman…so two FR are seeing significant PT but still learning how to play at this level…losing brown to injury who is one of the best defenders in the conference really was a major setback for the beavers…corosdale first year back from an early season injury where she missed nearly the entire season, and finally, losing destiny Slocum to the transfer route left a big hole on the beavers roster. Major disappointment from about the midpoint of last year is Goodman and she appears to have lost her shooting touch. With the addition of a true PG in Talia who averaged over 30 PPG in HS as junior, I expect she’ll see some PT after she passes covid protocol and she’s a 5*. Hell, look at the ducks with all of their 5* players and Zona hammered them too and the ducks have 3 losses. If you’re going to have a down season, it might as well be one with an asterisk by it due to covid. Plus, today was the beavers first game in 29 days so that’s what I consider game time rust. The only thing that makes up for a lack of playing games is actually playing games…”fresh legs” is just a complete lack of knowledge about the game especially considering the season is about what 10-12 games 0into the season so everyone had “fresh legs.” I’m still laughing over that comment that someone posted..

          • 2
            8

Forgot to add this was their only 7th game this year with a major shake up on the roster for reasons mentioned above, so Rueck will get them back on track. This year is a transitional year for the program. Kennedy comes back from injury next season and everyone else returns. .This team will be back in the thick of it next season guaranteed…

          • Arizona just played on Thursday. Are you suggesting that fresh legs shouldn’t have made a difference? You don’t know sports if so. We had a month to prepare and watch film. More prep time than anyone in the conference and still lost by the same amount the Ducks lost by who didn’t have the prep time. That’s a clear lack of talent and underdevelopment of players plain and simple. You make a lot of excuses as per your usual, but name a player on the current roster that has improved.

          • 2
            10

Time for you to change your user ID again…your continued desperation for attention by hanging on the beaver board makes you look just as desperate as you have always been…..very sad. Go hang on a duck board and get over your obsession with me and the beavers…it’s very creepy you are still stalking me. Rent free boot licker, rent free.

          • Lol….time of day posts, same adjectives, etc, like Angry indicated, you’re using multiple IP addresses and you were called out on it when you just magically reappeared after being banned again..it”s just a matter of time before it happens again.. It must be very tempting for you but you have to tone it down or the inevitable will happen again. Your obsession continues like it has since 2013….by now most “normal people” would have just let it go but not you…another strong signal regarding your transparent obsession. Can you tell us exactly what year you played for the Ducks men’s basketball team and how we watched you “light up” the beavers on TV as you previously posted on another forum? I really enjoyed that story. Or your coaching stories or of how rich you are? Never mind, I’ve read it all before from one of your other many different user names. Now that I’ve pretty much summed up some of your major fabricated stories for everyone else’s reading pleasure, I’ll just let you wallow in your own fantastic fantasies.. For someone that has admitted they “hate everything about the beavers,” isn’t is odd that you hang on a beavers blog…..rhetorical question…Good luck kid and get a grip on reality. SFDF. one last thing for you 41-38!

There is a rubber room waiting for you on Center Street in Salem. You should probably check that out. All of this because Ruecks team got hammered by Arizona? What will you do when they lose to UCLA, Stanford and the ducks again? Your head may pop off. Calm down my friend it’s just a game. Nobody wants his teams to win more than me, but they aren’t the best team in the state anymore. He had his run but it appears to be over now.

          • You might want to start paying attention to your ducks WBB team as they’re continuing to drop in the polls…..not a good look for a team with all of those 5* all Americans. Maybe that’s the problem….there are just too many stars on the team and too few balls to go around..I’mi sure you can relate to having too few balls that’s why you change your identity. ..no balls to stand behind your foolishness. Go figure though as you’re a duck fan so that’s to be expected.

          • 7
            1

They aren’t “my team” so I don’t really care where they are in the polls. Looks like they will make the tourney though. I wish the beaver team would this year but I think they have several more losses coming until they play Cal or UW. You get really wound up over this stuff and start to sling unnecessary insults which is a dead giveaway of your immaturity. You act like a bitch on here quite frankly and it’s embarrassing to the rest of us. Check yourself before you get banned

          • Lol… these are 18-23 year old women. 3 days between games is fresh as can be. I always have the most fresh legs 3 days after a big leg workout day and I am approaching middle age.

    • Browns throw a lot to try and catch up? Looks like they could’ve used their running game more but i didn’t see it.

Would have preferred Browns at Bills…

    • Home field advantage eliminated this season in NFL based on records…Mahomes and Chiefs don’t look so hot lately… Bills could win…

Then end up facing Brady in SB…”Damn it. Just when he left the AFC East!”

      • 1
        1

I can’t see the Bills winning…maybe if Mahomes can’t go. They are crazy one-dimensional, can’t run the ball at all. They set a record yesterday- fewest rush attempts in a playoff game, ever. In a game where they held a lead for the entire game!! They never trailed. Crazy. And a testament to Josh Allen that he’s been able to pull it off. OTOH. they only scored 10 offensive points yesterday and I’m not sure the Chiefs D is much of a dropoff from the Ravens D.

        • Chiefs have terrible RedZone defense. Coming into today gave up a td on something like 30 Of 36 trips. But yeah bills miss Moss. If mahomes can’t go, bills have plenty of Film on henne although Reid is a magician.

        • You think Moss is better than Singletary? I don’t see a big difference, Moss may be a hair stronger runner but Singletary is the better all around player.

    • it was the right call for Andy Reid, and it was the right call for Smith in Pullman. Heck, Reid went for it on his side of the 50!

    • That was a weird call given the backup QB was in, but since it worked, people will think it was correct. It definitely had an element of surprise that’s hard to handicap. Everyone thought they were trying to draw the Browns offsides, and the Browns players looked a step slow when it actually snapped.

  61. It was reported pregame that he was retiring regardless of the outcome. And if you watched him play this year, it seems pretty clear that the arm strength has suffered quite a bit – definitely not the same player he used to be.

In addition, I’m not sure that the Saints can or would pay him for next year. They are in the worst projected cap situation in the league, and it’ll be ugly. I think if he unretired he’d have to do it on a new team, which would further sap his motivation.

All that said, that was a super, super crappy way to go out.

    • Yeah, they’re super-bowl close team (obviously), so close to one more, and that sounded like a pretty terrible last-game-of-the-career if it was…I think it would be tempting to come back to the Saints at a reduced salary, though they’re going to have to make some pretty drastic cuts and maybe those cuts take them out of contention.

      • If he really doesn’t want to go out on that note, come back at a highly reduced rate. TB did it for years and years so the team could
Sign other players that helped him win. Brees has plenty of sponsorship deals to help him make enough next year for it to be worth it. Or maybe he’s at peace.

Rileysbike (Swammiturd v7.0) has been banned. He’s using a VPN routed through Mexico, and a Russian email address…yeah, that’s not going to fly.

Liked the username a lot so was hesitant to ban it, but F that.

        • 1
          6

His MO is to create a new User ID and attempt to regain entry within the next week or so or maybe even sooner. Therefore, I’d be wary of any new request to create a new User ID and access the blog. That’s one of the ways I was able to quickly identify who we was among other little pieces of information about his identity. Stalkers will resort to any means necessary to continue stalking. That’s what they do and that’s who they are. Someone recently suggested it was my fault for him even being here which was totally laughable comment. I didn’t invite him here, didn’t want him here and asked him to leave on several occasions. I did attempt to advocate for him on one rare occasion because of some his comments seemed reasonable, therefore, I thought maybe, just maybe that he’d finally realized how to become more reasonable. Unfortunately, I was wrong in my thoughts but that’s water under the bridge. He’s gone but I don’t think it will be for too long because he just doesn’t know he shouldn’t be here. He belongs in a Duck site where he can slobber all over the ducks with the rest of their myopic fan base.

          • I don’t approve any accounts. So he can do that if he figures out the VPN situation. But I’ll likely just ban him unless he has a funny username like Rileysbike. I’ll still ban him, but it will take a while to stop laughing at the username before I do.

Interesting why even a few beaver fans would like this guy. Go figure plus a guy that lied through his teeth about not being who I knew he was not to mention he essentially denounced his allegiance to the Ducks trying to disguise his identity…yep, what a guy. I’m glad he’s gone and that I was probably the only one in addition to Angry that was able clearly see through his line of BS. Good riddance to the stalking DS duck fan. If you all haven’t figured out what a lying fake POS he is, well, now you know. Again, thanks Angry for your due diligence. A well deserved banning for that goof ball stalker.

On another note, I see where Tinkle has landed another high impact JC xfer from USC Salkehatchie. He averaged 9.8 PPG and 8.2 rebounds per game playing for that JC national power….LOL. He did end up at Memphis but saw a total of 18 minutes in three games. Well, maybe he’ll be a nice role player….

    • Based on his highlight film, there are two givens. He should shoot 70+% from the field as almost every shot is at the cup. And he will win a slam dunk contest with those springs. They say you can’t teach height. Well, with this guy, you can’t teach that kind of athleticism.

        • He averaged 5 blocks per game during both his freshman and sophomore seasons. At any level, that is a tremendous average. He won’t be a scorer. Probably more of a mop-up guy who will score on mostly offensive rebounds, back door cuts and ally-oops. Will probably have a Kylor Kelly role even though he is only 6’8 and not 7’1. Not saying this guy will turn the program around, but looks like the type of guy the Beavs need right now as they can’t stop anyone in the paint. He should help in that regard. Plus, he was Penny Hardway’s first 2020 recruit and the way that guy he recruits, Rand must have some good potential.

          • now I’m intrigued so I’ll have to really check out his videos…..thanks for further clarity on this player. You can never have too many quality defensive players that are athletic so…

      • It’s not against the rules to take 2 QBs in one class. And if they are missing out on 2022 guys, a good one from 2021 can make that up.

        • I think most people would love to have Millen. I thought he looked slightly better than Vidlak. But we have a logjam at QB already, and depth needs at other positions for the remaining scholarships, which makes it less likely we would take a second QB in an already small class.

I’ll be first in line to celebrate if Millen ends up with us.

“I’m just trying to keep a lot of kids happy and give them a chance and I get it, this is what I wanted to do. …
We’ve got to make practices more competitive. I think the time has come for me to really just kind of tighten the rotation and say you know what, this is what we’re going with. If you’re not in the rotation, work harder and find a way in and find a way to contribute.”

“trying to keep a lot of kids happy”, that’s Kelly Graves with an admission of a downside of attracting a flock of five stars. A challenge somewhat shared by Rueck and unlikely to be faced by Smith.

      5

Pretty similar to what I posted yesterday regarding too few balls to go around…thats what happens when you have too many stars on your team and not enough role players. I expect they will see some players hit the transfer portal after the season.. Who knows and maybe the beavers can pick up a few players that leave the Ducks.

I don’t have Pac-12 Network. OSU vs. USC on ESPN2 right now so first game I’ve got to watch and I got to say OSU needs to hire a coach that can teach these guys how to shoot the ball. It has to be less then 50% right now going in.

    • Good win over a solid USC squad. Reminded me of WT first years with solid D and not so good offense. Silva looked great and I hope he gets more PT as he can be a difference maker in the paint. If WT had any offensive identity, aside from Ethan dribbling for 20 seconds, we would have 10 wins.

      • Silva had a solid game and know what to do when he gets the ball in the low post. He doesn’t hesitate and quickly commits to make his move negating double teams. Beavers played decent defense tonight too. I wish these guys would learn how to shoot the mid range jumpers though. Dome of their attempts are just plain ugly.

I could only tolerate about 90 seconds of Bill Walton; muted the broadcast, turned on MP broadcast which was a little ahead of the video – so I knew what was coming. If there is another nationally televised MBB I might do the same thing. Most announcers seem to champion whatever team the Beavs are playing.

    • Ditto – not having Pac-12 and being able to watch the game because it was on ESPN2. I withstood about 90 seconds of Bill Walton and ?. Muted them, turned into the Mike Parker broadcast. The MP broadcast was ahead of the video – 3-4 seconds – so I knew the plays beforehand. Pleased for the Beavs.

I just saw your comment and posted the same thing below.. And for gosh sakes, when you have an open shot, don’t hesitate and think about….just take the damned shot. Drives me crazy when they pass up open shots in the lane…..

  67. The new commit is the PWO WR/TE I hinted about the other day, Bryce Caufield.
He’a an intriguing prospect from the film I saw. About 6’5″, and has some speed.

  68. OT- Angry you’re a guitar guy ya? My wife got me a guitar for Christmas. Any good places on the good old internet to learn how to play?

Good win by the fellas, and Walton is entertaining with his love of Oregon and his enthusiasm. Beats the usual milquetoast guys.

Bill Walton is an American treasure. I’d probably try to murder him with my fork if we ever had dinner together, BUT he is great on TV. I’d listen to him read the phonebook.

just read that 5* guard Talia von Oelhoffen has now joined the team and is immediately eligible to begin practice and play for the Beavs. I’m anxious to see how she does…..

  71. Something interesting possibly to keep an eye on for the 2021 class as we approach signing day #2.
DT Victory Vaka, who has previously been committed to Texas A&M, and then flipped to Colorado. He has not decommitted from Colorado.
Soon after, a bunch of OSU coaches and him followed each other. So could be a sign that we are the reason he decommitted from CO.
We had been recruiting him before he chose Colorado and A&M, so this is not a new relationship.

  72. 2
    1

Viktory Vaka back on the market AGAIN….he has decommitted from Texas A and M and now Colorado. Any chance we could nab him? I see Michigan, FSU, etc are after him. I’d take any DT at this point.

      • So that means he’s going to commit only to decommit. Luck I’m da beavs.

I would be surprised if that’s why tho. Just because Smith has been solid at getting all of his players qualified and eligible thus far. Not like the previous coach that would always gamble and lose.

        • i was told by a rivals writer for the CO region in the past that the only reason we landed the Wright brothers and Julian was because of the higher academic standards at CO. Apparently one of them wasn’t going to make the cut at CO, but could at OSU, so they all moved to OSU together. Otherwise they all would have been at CO. Julian had already been a CO commit prior to flipping to OSU

          • 1
            1

I’ll take it. But I don’t see that being the case with Nashon tho. Think he wasn’t as highly recruited and not sure if he was recruited by CO. I could see that being the case with rezjohn tho. From watching last chance u he doesn’t seem like a guy who takes academics very seriously.

My point was more so that Smith doesn’t seem to recruit guys that won’t qualify at Oregon State.

How much higher standards are there at CO.

          • On acceptance rates it’s close but still Idk if I believe that.. OSU acceptance rate is 80.6 and Colorado is 81.5, they would have qualified for either university I’m guessing.

One last thought on the recent banning of Turdman….you know, I think we might want to memorialize his departure by erecting a statute or a likeness of him. I just dropped a deuce and could have it glazed in his image and pay homage to the little turd. BTW, it was a skidder too….Turdman would have enjoyed the energy I put into that effort. LOL. Don’t let the swirling water flush you on the way down Turdman! I feel like I’ve dropped 25 lbs….plop, plop, plop.

      1

Dude, you claim he’s a stalker but you talk about him more than he ever talked about you…I don’t get what’s going on here. How do you know him?

Angry, what was the deal with the two of them sharing an IP? If so, how did you ban Turd?

      • 1
        11

I don’t know him, he followed me over here from another forum for some reason unbeknownst to me. He’s not a beaver fan, never will be a beaver fan and hates the Beavers as he admitted. This started back in 2013 in another forum and he took it immediately to another level and often hit below the belt and had no sense of boundaries with his comments.

While he was here after being banned at least twice, I decided to try to distract his efforts onto me so he would leave other commenters alone on this blog site. Sometimes my strategy worked, other times it didn’t. So my parting shot to this goof was my above post.

I know he still reads comments from this blog but is unable to comment now so it’s my parting shot to a guy that most often went out of bounds in the other forum and often in here too. Some of his comments were occasionally reasonable, but he often reverted back to his old, nasty commentary that I found highly offensive.

The tipping point for me with his comments was during the Luke Heimlich situation a few years back when I disclosed that I had been molested as a child by by older female cousin (I was 5 and she was about 15) and could understand what a child goes through when something like that happens. He thought that was funny and made several rude and crass comments on the other forum about it before the forum shut him down. Then when he followed me here, he made a similar comment about 9 months ago or so before he was banned the first time by Angry.

As of today, this is my final thoughts on this guy and I want everyone here to know exactly what kind of character to this guy really is. And, BTW, he claims to coach girls basketball somewhere in Oregon and that’s a very scary thought IMO.

So, sorry if my posted offended you, but I thought I’d get one final poke at the guy as he was very deserving of my last and final comment about him. And, no, he responded to my every comment when several of those comments were never intended for him or even mentioned him. Only when he engaged in his usual rants, did I comment back to him with the intention of drawing his attention away from other commenters here on the blog. He was toxic, he knew it, he thrived on it and he went down with it.

        • 1
          10

I think he meant that S-Turd had the same IP address as Riles-B and the reason they did was, they were one in the same person. Like Angry posted somewhere up above, he was obsessed with me and the Beavers and that’s why he found me on this blog. Of course, he attempted on several occasions to disguise his identity, but I was always able to figure out it was him. Anyway, that hopefully gives you context for the back n forth because my intention was always to get him banned and thrown out of this blog site.

      • He really infatuated with this guy. What mentally stable person continues to post to a person who has been banned then claims he’s not obsessed. It’s pretty evident who the douche here is. Sounds like he needs more counseling following his own personal Heimlich incident. Nobody here cares bro, move the fuck on

      • 10

For real. Protecting the other commenters on here? LMAO. Whatever you have to tell yourself. You’re clearly obsessed with him too.

        • Whatever, you’re entitled to your opinion. Bottom line is he is gone and that’s a big hurrah in my book..Let’s just say before he showed up in this blog nearly a year ago, things were fine. After he arrived, not so much and that’s what I tried to get him banned by calling him out. It worked on several occasions in another forum.so believe what you want. He’s gone and I’m not….funny how that worked yet again..

        • 10

Think what you like. Proof is in the pudding and he’s gone and I’m still here. It looks like everything worked out just fine and that’s a big hurrah in my book. What’s done is done, objective achieved.and mission accomplished. Go beavers and keep the ducks out of a beaver blog unless they’re reasonable…..

    • 2
      8

So, if you had your choice of anyone, I mean anyone, who would it be? IMO, it should be someone that has been around the Pac-12 and maybe even a former Pac-12 athlete although not mandatory. We definitely someone who will advocate and be outspoken for the conference and try to restore some prestige for the Pac12. Certainly not an easy mission but very necessary in order to make the conference viable again on a national level. Under Scott, the Pac-12 became the equivalent of a mid-major conference especially in football and basketball (men’s). With the new revenue sharing about to unfold in a few years, things are going to become very interesting for the Pac-12 and how does a diminished conference compete with the SEC’s, Big-10, etc., and survive. Realignment of conferences, addition by subtraction, etc., you have to attract the talented coaches, assistants and players to want to play in the Pac-12. Oregon and USC have figured out the player portion of that equation, but coaching….not so much IMO. Not to say that the PAC doesn’t have quality coaches, it does, but not elite coaches like some of the SEC and a few other conferences. Tough job for anyone to take on, but whoever it turns out to be, they’ve got to be much, much better than Scott. Good luck

    • 10 years too late. Now thanks to him we are more then 10 years behind the rest of the power 5 conferences. Except for luxurious office spaces, we win that.

  74. You may remember a couple of Alaskan OL guys I mentioned a couple weeks back. It looks like OSU is fairly interested in one of them(also plays DE)
Could be a guy worth keeping an eye on as we approach signing day. He was down in Tacoma a couple of weeks ago for a skills camp, so I’m assuming they got a chance to see him in person then.

    https://247sports.com/Player/Isaako-Manu-46111918/

  75. I don’t think familiarity with the Pac-12 or west coast should be that big of a criteria for the next commish. If anything – someone with strong ties back east and accustomed to getting their calls to Fox and ESPN returned would be a better choice.

Big East Commissioner Val Ackerman would be a solid pick. Oliver Luck as well.

  76. I’m guessing the best candidates aren’t people that are household names, so speculation is mostly pointless.

Some oddball candidates that could work:
    Condoleezza Rice
    Craig Robinson

    Who we’ll probably get:
Some Silicon Valley burnout with no sports experience
    A “businessman”!
    Mike Bellotti

    • Unverified report, could just be someone trying to trade, but there are definite near-term headwinds. Janet Yellen also said she wants to restrict cryptos because they’re mostly for “illicit uses.”

Near-term, you have stimulus checks and major investors like Blackrock talking about taking positions, so that could be positive.

      • I wouldn’t say Bitmex is a bad source on the double spend.

The checks, major investors, etc are what drove it to 42k. I sold 2/3 of my position I think we’re going to retest 22k now after Yellen’s comments + the double spend (much more major news).

    • He wrote like 50+ of them and he certainly wasn’t alone. I don’t think columnists have much influence over any decision making at the pac12.

  77. 2
    5

Ducks minus leading scorer and another starter vs beavers this weelend. I think beavs have won 4 out of last 6 vs ducks so maybe can make it 5 of 7. Home court advantage pretty much irrelevant this season.

  78. Another interesting guy popped up in 2021 recruiting tonight. Dual Threat QB Ben Ford out of Idaho. OSU coaches hoster him for a virtual visit tonight.
Was the player of the year in the state of Idaho this year. Currently no offers.
Strange OSU is recruiting another QB, unless they are looking at him as a pure athlete rather than a specific position.
That’s 2 guys the last 2 days who I’ve seen OSU recruiting activity with who were the players of the year in their respective states. (Idaho and Alaska)

    https://twitter.com/ford14_ben/status/1352445959968485376?s=19

      • Looks legit fast but not 4.4 fast. PWO offer is what I would expect as he is undersized for pretty much all positions. He could probably grab a G5 offer somewhere if he gets his film out. Otherwise he can take a chance to earn a scholarship at a P5 school.

        • I wouldn’t call him undersized fro rb, wr, or db even the way teams are going with smaller quicker QBs that’s not really off the table at 5’11 190. I agree a PWO tho.

You would think DL would be a position to load up on some PWOs at to see if they can develop into starting or rotation players in 4,5,6 years. Bring in a kid that has a good frame and athleticism and see if he can fill out and maintain some of that agility and quickness.

    • Those guys just don’t get the same kind of exposure as kids from the bigger states and hit all the camps. Could potentially find some hidden gems and not have to fight competition.

      • Especially in a year like this one where kids were limited in how much they could play, if at all. And nobody could make official visits and coaches couldnt make road trips. Lots of potential for guys to fall through the cracks

        • I think there’s potential for some kind of offer going out to any of Isaako Manu(OT/DE), Ben Ford(RB) and Carter Neuman(local TE from Eugene who recently decommitted from Air Force and also picked up a PWO offer from UW)

Ford also plays baseball and has a partial scholarship offer to UW in that sport.

All 3 probably fall into the PWO category

          • Doing well in the PWOs is important for building a program and culture. When those guys work hard and rise up the depth chart they earn a lot of respect from their teammates and sets a good example. Coach Smith and jaydon grant are perfect examples of this. It was too bad to see more and chryst leave. I thought they were pretty solid for walk ons with good bloodlines.

          • Sounds like a good athlete obviously, but I wonder about the level of competition he’s faced. If he has legitimate 4.41 speed, it seems like BSU would have offered him, an in-state player?

          • Some guys are fast, but don’t necessarily have the skills to stick at any particular position. Irish and Gould are the two fastest players on our team and neither really got any real receiver reps this year.

Thinking back to guys I ran against in HS track who were some of the best in the state, a few went on to play big time football (Ohio State, Cincinnati, etc.) and a few went to MAC schools, but never even sniffed the field.

          • Wasn’t gould a RS freshman? O wouldn’t expect him to play much last year. I was hoping to see more Irish tho. He should be returning kicks instead of flemings.

  79. As helmsley and Bill have pointed out, Canzano was active in publicizing problems with Larry Scott’s time at the helm of the PAC. Jon Wilner has done the same; he writes that Scott will be replaced at the end of June this year BUT he’ll be paid till the end of June, 2022. No word on when he’ll begin paying on that $1.9 million interest free loan.

Wilner writes that the search for a new commish will be led by the Executive Committee of the CEO Group. The Committee is made up of the Presidents of UoW, nike, and WSU; chosen based on seniority. They’ve not said whether they want a media guy or an administrator experienced with college sports.

It will be interesting to see how the search pans out; Wilner suggests taking a shot at the current commissioner of the Big 12, Bob Bowlsby, a guy who spent 6 years as Stanford AD. He’s got experience in media and sports, he also just turned 69. I’m not one to look at age but this sounds like the definition of a Long Shot.
Then again, he was hired in his present job by the WSU president…..the one on the Exec Committee.

    GO BEAVS, GO F.KING

    • I think bringing in someone with some AD experience would be good. As far as Networks the Pac-12 Network sucks! I think it would be cool if we struck some kind of deal withan existing Network like the Big-10 network. There is obviously rivalry history there… Rose bowl games of the past. And maybe it would cause more out of conference games to happen.

    • Rivalry games are unpredictable….it was a good game though. The offensive call on Arizona near the end was a bad call but zona finished the job.

    • “Universally liked and respected within the profession, DeRuyter’s hire is expected to be very well received by players, coaches and administrators.” per The Scoop.
Sounds a lot like the way Riley was described.

Wonder if turncoat Heyward will stay. Young family and swoosh cash must be taken into account.

    • Well, beavers beat Cal last year and the schmucks lost to Cal….good pickup be the ducks for the beavers offense for future rivalry games. Pendulum tipping in beavers direction now.

I’m not someone who likes musicals generally, buy my wife and i watched Hamilton on Disney+ last night. It lived up to the hype and was really well done. If you have nothing to watch, it’s worth checking out.
(I know I cant be the only one who is about 5 years behind the times)

          • It’s basically a telling of his story since he seems to be the forgotten founding father.

The whole concept when described doesnt sound like something that should work, but somehow they make it pretty interesting.
            It’s hip/hop musical about a founding father.
But even if you don’t care for hip/hop or the founding fathers, you can still appreciate the amount of detail that went into the writing and music/choreography to make the whole thing work.

I very much liked it and it does do a good job of keeping to the real history. It also shows you that USA politics have been ugly since day one.

    • Hamilton is amazing. Seen it live (not with the original cast) and the recorded version which is of the original cast. Brilliant brilliant brilliant.

  81. You may have noticed in the twitter feed that Mike Doctor was promoted to OSU’s Recruiting Coordinator today. Not sure what that means for Pitre, who was the RB Coach/Recruiting Coordinator prior to this. Have to assume his role will be modified slightly too.

    • This reminds me, I was hoping to see a change in the coaching staff with special teams. Do most programs have a special teams coordinator? I didn’t see much on special teams that got me excited. I know there has been the onside kick or something tricky here and there but the overall execution doesn’t seem good.

      • Cookus seems like a fairly important recruiter. ST results aren’t stellar, but I’m guessing with Serna around he’s pitching in with some extra PK coaching.

    • Seems like Pitre has still been acting as lead recruiter. Maybe Doctor is taking on more of a strategic role (going from just on-campus coordinator to “Director”) to free up Pitre for more Sales time.

  82. Nice article today about Roman Silva on OLive. He’s turning out to be a pretty competent player in the low post and certainly knows what to do with the ball around the basket. His progress and developmemt has certainly been a surprise. I’ll be interested to see how he does this weekend. Also too bad that beavers WBB game cancelled vs dawns or we could have possibly seen Talia’s debut on the court. Hi beavers!

  84. Looks like WR Ishawn Stewart is in the portal now.
Another opportunity to add some more WR talent. It’s too bad Smori Toure already is at Nebraska.

  85. Anyone (NB) know how we are doing with 2022 guys from the state of Oregon? I see Utah just offered Trejon Williams. It seems the top guys usually head out of state.

    • As far as I know, only one guy so far is pretty much an OSU lock. 2022 OT, Keith Olson.
Trejon Williams will have his choice of pretty much any school in the nation when all is said and done. OSU never wins those battles, and I don’t anticipate that trend changing.
