Who is the 50 Million Donor?

238

There’s a list of maybe five people this could be. Anyone have insight into who it is? I’d take the info personally via email if you don’t want to say on the board.

50 mil seems like too much for our usual donor, the Resers. It made me wonder if it’s the finance guy or Nvidia guy. Seems one of these two is more likely.

Also, if they could afford 50 mil, why couldn’t they make a generous recurring, monthly donation to AB???

Could be Phil Knight. He would have good reason to want to remain anonymous, and it actually benefits Nike U to have a solid rival program.

Or it could be Kevin Plank as part of a quid pro quo deal to get OSU to switch to Under Armor…

Nike is one of the largest corporate donors to OSU athletics.

Under Armour is a sinking ship. They had to revoke their deal with UCLA because they couldn’t afford it.

The only other big player out there is Adidas. UW switched to Adidas recently

  2. It was exactly 50 million. Also think was Mr. Knight. Appreciate the gift. Shouldn’t be as much of a chasm between the facilities as it had become. Rivals should both be strong.

  3. Did Knight donate to science facilities development at UO, AND OSU and OHSU? Seems like he has a history of donating to more than UO, so it could be him.

I thought the NVIDUA alum was a basketball guy? Seems like he might have been more interested in Gill upgrades?

Why could it only be five people? How could you possibly know how many ultra wealthy OSU alums there are?

I bet you didn’t (and probably still don’t) know who Gary Carlson was before he donated $50 million to the OSU veterinary school a couple of years ago.

  5. Angry, you should update the thread title to 50 million. It has been confirmed in numerous official press releases. 45 million was an unofficial undersell from Canzano from the day before the official release. 50 million is important because it tied the Veterinary program donation of 50 million as the largest single gifts in OSU history.

  6. Reser’s. Been giving anonymously to athletics for several years now after receiving some unseemly attention after previous public donations.

  7. I doubt it’s the Austin Family (A-DEC) but they are awesome, have given a lot to the university, and the founder was the first ever Benny the Beaver.

    • Since Ken Austin passed away there’s been some nasty infighting over control of A-DEC; I seriously doubt they or his estate is the anonymous donor. For one thing, Ken and his wife (also deceased) have not minded publicity for past donations (to more than just OSU).
Agree, they are (were) awesome !

Related: if you are a car guy and get to Newberg, you should try to visit Ken’s auto collection.

      • That’s too bad to hear about the fighting for control. Seems like such a family oriented company. I’ve toured the campus (it is a campus) a few times. Most building a had a traeger. They would bbq on some fridays and have bday parties for employees at the department buildings. I always said if I was looking for a job in that industry, I’d highly consider working there. Hopefully they can stick to their A-DEC ways and keep the company thriving. They have a dentist chair in the White House and at the Grand Canyon.

    • Yeah I was just looking at the numbers on them.
It looks like A-DECs annual revenue is 250mil. Hard to believe they’d give 20% to a floundering football program. Especially since control of the business seems up in the air (as of 2019 at least).

  8. F.King lauded by Wilner.
Whatever you think of Wilner, you have to know he was instrumental in publicizing the shortcomings of Larry Scott; for that alone he deserves a listen.
Here’s what he says about F.Kings statement yesterday:
Asked about the optics of promoting the gift and the project during a pandemic, Alexander offered the best explanation for athletic facility investment from a university president that we’ve ever heard.
And we’ve been at this for a long time.
The 257-word, 84-second answer could have been about an major project, at any time, on any campus. But with COVID as the backdrop, Alexander’s response carried exponentially more impact.

F.Kings response to that question begins at 26:12
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WcjlTiLM5tE

      • Having a good athletic program helps with attracting and retaining students while giving them a full university experience. Planting seeds so that 20-30 years down the road, those students have an attachment to the university and make large gifts like the one they received possible.

I think it was Barnes who also said, while athletics is not the most important room in the house, they are the front porch. It’s how the university brand gets seen and heard.

basic message – people like winners and will support them

I mean I donate because I still have an attachment to the university. If I had 50 million to spare, I’d probably donate it too to help the program.

I loved Alexander’s entire presentation at the announcement. He seems to be a no BS kind of guy. A rare thing in academia these days. No apologies and no double talk. He seemed very engaged in the discourse, not just up there to give stock answers. I think he did his worst at the beginning reading his scripted presentation. He does much better engaging in dialogue. I think OSU (both the University and the Athletic Department are in good hands for the next decade.

Scott Barnes got an email from a Nigerian Prince. The Prince said he had to get all his cash out of the Country and was asking Barnes for help. The Prince offered Barnes $50 million dollars. But first; for Barnes to get the money, the Prince needed a direct deposit to his account in the amount of $5 million to verify the account number.

So OSU and zona were the only Pac schools to not land a 4 star recruit. That’s pretty disappointing. Does anyone think that a couple of successful years allows them to start to land some better players? Riley was never able to capitalize with better recruiting classes when he haf 8,9, 10 win seasons. Now there are definitely facilities that are at least somewhat comparable to the rest of the Pac.

Hopefully they can be successful with their local walk ons kind of like a Wisconsin. It seems like they’re making good in state connections that will hopefully pay off in the future. Really need to keep the big time in state recruits home and away fro. The sucks.

I don’t get how Utah is able to land such highly rated qbs. They haven’t had a good offense in damn near forever and certainly not very good QB play.

        • I’m looking at 247, which has them both as 3’s. FWIW ESPN still has Mascarenas as a 4-star.

There’s a 247 article from May that literally refers to “4-star LB Easton Mascarenas,” yet he ended up as a 3-star. There are multiple places that refer to Damir Collins as a “4-star recruit per 247,” and he also ended up as a 3-star. I wouldn’t sweat the thin margins between 4-stars and high 3-stars.

The Schmucks are living proof that stars don’t really matter. They continue to under achieve since the departure of the Chipper.

          • I’m not worried about it. Just lends to the fact that OSU still can’t pull players from other pac 12 schools on a regular basis. Especially if you consider the fact that they were being more selective with the smaller class. They’ve really been struggling recruiting the lines. The white flip was a huge win.

          • Ya but not really. The guys had maybe 1 or 2 pac 12 or P5 offers not a whole slew of them. Collins probably wouldn’t have come had he been able to go to the dux. Omarion I have to wonder if his LSU off was committable because whenever they land a guy like that it’s usually because it wasn’t on the table anymore.

informed thinking down in Eugene thinks it’s Knight. He has the means plus the incentive for anonymity, as noted above. Plus, he has a history of making very strategic gifts, like giving OSU the money it needed to keep Pat Casey from fleeing to Notre Dame.

It’s also worthy of remark that F. King equaled Ed Ray’s largest gift after being on the job 7 months. A completed football stadium is only one of the rewards OSU sports fans are going to reap with him in the presidency in lieu of Ed Ray

    • As posted yesterday, ICYMI:
For those wondering if fans will be allowed in Surprise for the 4 games Feb 19-22, here is Eggers responding to a reader who wanted a link to information and “curious how Eggers had the inside scoop” that fans would be allowed:
“There’s no “link.” Just call the stadium box office like I did…”

Take note wannab and beavergopher !!

      • I’m glad to hear it, OOBie, but the news arrives too late to make plans. Other demands have filled the schedule in the mean time, including the vaccination timetable. nature abhors a vacuum, including human nature.

        • 2
          1

Thanks for the link. They didn’t really get into details on pay structure, and whether that was THE reason why Norte Dame was turned down…. but it is a start. Good for Beaver baseball, now Knight needs to throw some pocket change at the Beaver football team!

          • The deal actually dealt more with Nike (and I’m sure orchestrated by Phil). OSU previously had used DeMarini (located in Wilsonville, Or) bats in their rise to National prominence. Nike created a contract with OSU to use Nike bats exclusively and also gave Casey an additional bonus of around $100k a year. George Horton was given the same contact at UofO. After a couple of years, the team realized that the bats sucked. Nike released OSU from the exclusive use part but honored the contract and bonus.

So the narrative seems to be that the Beavs are killing it in the transfer portal and everyone seems to buy it. It’s just simply not true. Most of the pac 12 has gotten more highly rated transfers than the Beavs. Originally before the new rules were in place I think they were benefiting more than other schools with the timing of registration but that advantage doesn’t really seem to be there anymore. It’s unfortunate because that seemed to be a good equalizer.

    • 1
      1

We definitely need to bring in a few more impact transfers for this period to be a success. JS and co. seem to recognize that based on the number of open scholarships they held back through the HS signing period. RB, DB, and DT should all be priorities.

I’m surprised we haven’t heard more or seen more effort around the safety positions. With Morris retired, we have some JC’s who are unproven and the two younger guys that looked bad last year (Arnold and Oladipo). Julian looked decent in his limited time.

      • Oladipo played ok I thought. Former walk on that’s worked his way up the depth chart. I think he had a 9 or 10 tackle game and a few big hits and sacks. But I think that also shows lack of talent there. They tried to address that but the two JC guy’s opted out. Safety has the highest amoun6of turnover in Smith’s tenure. Moran left too and Watson hasn’t done anything is his whole career. So I agree with you there.

RB has a lot pf talent that just isn’t proven. Madison, Newell, and Collins were all the highest rated committ in there classes I believe. Then you have Baylor, Fenwick, and Lowe. Out of those 6 I would hope you could find a solid starter and a couple of contributors.

DT obviously has been a big need for awhile. I think we’re all hoping for something big there. Also DE could use a guy as well.

      • I feel like they picked up 3 impact transfers and 1 potential.

The cb from Kansas, rb from South Carolina and wr from Georgia are immediate starters in my mind(maybe rb will split time with Baylor)

The oline from Utah state has the frame and size to potentially play, especially if 1 of the 3 interior guys gets hurt. If he doesn’t play this year much, he will next season a ton

        • 3 impact transfers, but no more impressive than the average transfer additions other Pac12 teams have had, so basically keeping pace, at best.
At least that’s how I see it currently, and I think that’s what Bleedorange is saying.
We had a strategy that worked temporarily, but if everybody ia granted a transfer waiver this year, OSU has no advantage over any other teams, so the transfer portal is not advantageous this year.
Look at thrle transfers Utah, Arizona and Colorado has picked up this year and you’ll see similar or better results than OSU, at least so far.

The good news, I think we still have several scholarship spots to fill. Wish I knew exactly how many…

It wasn’t a pretty finish and the beavers fortunate after getting hammered on the offensive boards and too many turnovers in the first half, but the beavers get it done. despite not playing very well, the beavers beat a good WSU team. Of course the ducks can’t say the same thing. Go beavers!

  14. 1
    3

Alatishe almost single-handily gives the game away at the end. He will learn from the mistakes and hopefully not repeat them in the future. I forgot the beavers were picked to finish last in the conference this year so just keep winning.

    • 3
      1

Those were pretty shockingly dumb plays. I thought it was funny how the one announcer was trying to play it down due to Alatishe’s lack of basketball experience and Eldridge Recasner was having none of it. It can’t happen again.

  15. Interesting article in the Chronicle for Higher Education about which state funded schools are leveraged by their reliance on tuition and auxiliary income ( dorms, food plans, athletics fees & income) in an era when students are in shorter than expected supply because of COVID ,

The Chronicle lists 7 Pac 12 schools in the top 100. Leading the charge at # 4: UO with 60.3% of its budget being student-reliant (as opposed to state funding, grants, indirect income, philanthropy) #8 Arizona State, 57.6%; #18 Colorado, 54.2% [Portland State @ 27–51.9%]; # 60 OSU, 42.4%. Zona, WSU and Cal are also in the top 100.

The story relates, as state support began to diminish in the 1990’s “diversified revenue streams were a way of hedging their bets,” quoting an official from higher ed. At the tactical level, this entailed luring out of state and international students to campus, since they pay multiples of what is charged for in-state tuition.

The primary case study cited for this development is UO: “The University of Oregon had hired a senior vice provost, Gerald R. Kissler, who had previously worked in California. That state’s master plan for higher education was beginning to strain at the seams. There were too few places for all the students clamoring–and qualified–for admission, particularly at the prestigious University of California campuses. If Oregon could recruit just a percentage of that population, the university could reap the benefits of higher-paying out of state residents, Kissler proposed. The question was, how? One piece of the answer turned out to be football. . . . Drawing the line between cause and effect is tricky, but it’s clear Oregon’s student body changed. In a single year, 1992, the number of Californians enrolled there doubled. By the mid-1990’s, four in 10 students were non-residents, now nearly half are from out of state.”

Elsewhere in the article: “Michael Schill, Oregon’s current president, has called athletics the university’s ‘front porch’, the welcome mat for prospective applicants. Even for students for whom sports is not a major reason for attending the university, the Ducks are frequently their introduction.”

From the foregoing, once can see the logic of OSU folding both a student health & wellness center and student welcoming center in the new football stadium. Nevertheless, a key line from the article stands out: “no one ever really considered what would happen to major universities if no one could come to campus.” In the short term, that’s a reference to Covid, but the succession of “birth dearths” in the demographic pipeline augur severe problems for the entire higher ed ecosystem.

    • The demographic time bomb is close to inevitable, but it will take a long time to play out. The bigger concern is COVID accelerating a move away from the traditional on-campus college experience (which had already started with enrollment falling pre-COVID due to the increasingly dubious financial case for a 4-year degree for many people).

      • Especially true is the increasingly dubious financial case for a 4-year degree …
Also, schools built much of their business model on the increasing student loan piggybank, that’s not likely to continue.

      • I concur, BiOH, but it now seems likely that Covid is going to change the trajectory of higher ed, even before the time bombs go off. (The birth rate in the US in 2020 dropped dramatically, but there’s one ahead of it from the Great Recession of 08-09.) The Chronicle is replete with stories of colleges closing down low demand majors and even severely titrating admission to grad schools because with several colleges closing every year nowadays, there’s no place for new PhD’s to go.

Considering how they played without Ethan in the game much Saturday – I’m actually looking forward to seeing how the Beavs do next season. But then again, I assumed Tinkle would bring a strong defensive team that could win games at the free-throw line – so I was wrong there. Good win though. And kind of nice of the Beavs to give Terry Porter one of his last wins as a coach on the bluff.

    • Isn’t Ethan allowed back due to COVID? Or is basketball not doing the free year thing?

Either way, they need one of the bigs to step up and get rebounding out of someone other than Alatishe.

        • Players stocks don’t usually go up in basketball if they stay past their senior year. The good players come out early and have more upside because they’re young. Staying just makes them older and hurts their development. He’s probably only a G league or European player anyways and even then probably not for long.

    • Depends if they do anything in the Pac-12 tournament and postseason. Ducks routinely get better late, play well in tournament and can usually win a game or two in the NCAAs. Beavers have made like 1 NIT in the last almost 30 years.

Interspersed wins are ok, but you have to turn it into something or some narrative. That happens when you show up in Vegas and seize the bull by its horns. This team has some pieces, but question is will they be cold blooded enough when it matters.

    • 3
      1

He’s like a slightly worse version of Riley at this point, in my mind. Not a great recruiter, but has proven he can keep the program mediocre even with a talent deficit. They’ll have some nice wins during the year, but post-season will usually be disappointing. There’s no reason to think the program is going to make a step forward under him.

If you throw out the 16-17 basketball season, Riley and Tinkle have almost identical conference winning %’s.

    • 1
      12

With coaches kids almost gone, we are now starting to see WT ability to attract some pretty good talent recruiting transfers and HS players. We’re also seeing much better movement and schemes on offense. Despite the WSU defensive performance, this team is really starting to play some solid defense too. The pendulum between OSU and the Schmucks has started to swing the way of the beavers.. I’m pleasantly surprised by this teams development.

    • I think the frustration is about whether Tinkle can coach the team to be a regular contender. Always seems to be one player away. Always does just enough to justify keeping him around, the team has not been not been the conference doormat but is also one injury away from last place.

Going forward, the question will be, what upside is left in Tinkle? Even getting to the NIT would be nice. With college finances in shambles, coaching changes will be less likely. Look at UW, went from 2 time coach of the year to back to back last place finishes. They can’t afford make a change at this point.

As for Tinkle’s future, he’s signed through the 22-23 season. Barnes should make it a requirement to make the tourney before extending him.

      • I tend to think he’ll benefit from not having any son favoritism on his teams after this year. Recruits who may have passed us up because of the favoritism may start coming here after seeing guys like Alitshe and Lucas have some success here.

So last night I had an edible (just 10mg) and watched the Mary Tyler Moore show for the first time ever. I always assumed it was a dated, crappy show like most old things that people glorify. But holy cow…that show was incredible and seemed so modern. It was like Seinfeld meets Sex in the City. I had no idea it was that good. At least Season 1. I’ll have to see if it stands up as I work through the seasons.

    • 3
      8

Might I suggest watching Taxi. . that was a great sitcom too. Christopher Lloyd as Jim Ignatowski was spectacular along with Danny Devito, Judd Hirsch, Tony Danza and several others…i used to watch MTM too and it was a great sitcom. Today’s sitcoms are few and far between but The Office and Seinfeld were quality sitcoms back in the day.

    • 8
      2

I think you were just high. What did Seinfeld ever do to you to be compared to that show and mentioned in the same sentence as sex and the city? Lol

      • 3
        4

I’m not a fan of sex and the city, but given MTM was 1970 it was way ahead of it’s time. That’s all I’m saying. Great show. In some ways better than Seinfeld (less mean humor and not as loud/wacky ala Seinfeld Seasons 6-9). Seinfeld season 1-5 is almost untouchable. Totally different show after that, with Kramer becoming absurd to the point of unwatchable.

    • 4
      3

I’m old enough to remember watching MTM in real time, and we watched the whole series over the course of two months during the initial onset of the pandemic. That show was very much ahead of its time, and the humor has held up over the decades.

  18. Bray in the mix for HC job at Montana State. It would be a big hit to our recruiting braintrust to lose Pitre and Bray in one cycle.

Then again, it’s always easier to replace quality with quality when the outgoing guy is taking a step up, and maybe the defense needs to be shaken up a bit? LB’s were disappointing this year, other than Roberts.

    • Too bad quacks coach didn’t take the job. I guess it’s a good sign programs want guys from the staff? This could be leverage for a raise if he truly doesn’t want that job.

      • Seems like a tough HC job to me, but it’s a high-risk/high-reward career move that would skip the DC step.

The Nike LB coach leveraged it into a co-DC title, so maybe Bray gets the same?

        • Mmmmm – Bobcats have a solid fan base – University president is committed to athletics – soaring population – not sure how much of it would translate to more fans or donors – stadium is near downtown – terrific restaurants – talk of an indoor practice facility.

      • I don’t see that being a huge risk on defense. We already lost Pitre. Coach M is really the only position coach it would really hurt to lose, and he seems like a OL for life kinda guy. He’s already the highest paid position coach, right?

  19. 2

Not one post about the SB? “MTM,” Taxi… investments, Beaver coaching changes…love this site.

I didn’t watch SB either, went skiing and it was great.

      • Defenses win championships. Mahomes has incredible talent but had no time to display it yesterday. Poor guy was playing street ball out there. Brady is the GOAT but his defense was the MVP.

        • Specifically the Bucs D-line. The Chiefs O-line was completely dominated all night long. Mahomes was running for his life on every play. Still managed to make some crazy plays but he couldn’t do it on every snap. Really impressive performance- only time the Mahomes-led Chiefs have ever been shut down like this. Zero touchdowns!

          • It was nice to see the RT struggle so much so the blame isn’t all pinned in Remmers like that Denver-Carolina Super Bowl. Feel a bit bad for the guy. He might make a decent guard but his lack of foot speed makes him a walking disaster at OT.

          • Wow. Does Suh play for Bucs? If so, good game?

KC w/no TDS is pretty odd. Reid simply out coached, or missing starting LT too much to overcome given the matchups?

          • I thought the game plan was kind of dumb. I dunno that Reid was outcoached necessarily and it was a lost cause anyway but he could have done stuff differently. I thought they should have gone with the run more. Clyde Edwards-Hilario looked good and with playing 2 backup tackles letting them cut their teeth by delivering the run block blows would have been the smart move IMO. KC doesn’t really have a good blocking TE but they should have done something to help buy Mahomes a few more seconds. Suh looked alright, definitely not the player he once was. It was more so the OLB edge rush that was wreaking havoc.

        • Yeah, Bucs basically played the entire game with 2 deep safeties and nothing but vanilla on D and still put a ton of pressure on Mahomes. Most boring SB I can remember. At least I won a free dinner off a bet.

      • 1
        1

If I could give this multiple thumbs up I would.

If Jayden were here, each of his thumbs ups would count as two because his hands are so big.

    • Hitting the transfer portal in 5-4-3-2-1….”I’d like the thank the coaches and fans at WSU for the love and tremendous experience, but I’ve decided to re-open my recruitment….”

He might even be worth it. College kids drink. Put him on a practice squad, get him through diversion, see if he shapes up. If he doesn’t mature, let him go. Otherwise, you’ve got someone to test your D and maybe a future QB.

I drank in college, but didn’t drive. Could walk everywhere. He’s lucky he didn’t kill someone.

Think he ends up at UH, maybe after a year off?

  20. Re Tinkle. I still don’t think he is a great coach. But I don’t think he is so bad that I would root against him in order for him to be shown the door. I still hope the team wins every game.

  21. Tinkle sucks at knowing when to call a timeout. He let the buffs go on too long of a run while the Beavs were completely discombobulated.

    • You could’ve ended that paragraph after “Tinkle sucks”

Saw they swept the Washington schools on the news over the weekend. Checked the remaining schedule. 2 against CU, 2 against Utah, 1 at Stanford, Arizona schools on the road and another civil war.

Only winnable games look like maybe Utah at home. Maybe Cal and ASU on the road.

Point being the schedule is not favorable and the season will predictably end with a thud.

Why Stinkle continues to try and put square pegs in round holes is beyond me. Trying to beat schools doing the same shit with better players.

If he’d just go back to the blueprint from the first season (playing lockdown defense and everyone buying in) he’d probably have better success/results. But no. That’s boring and no fun.

This is what, year 8??? And only one ncaa tournament to show for it. And none of the other years were even close. Not even one fucking NIT???

Guy sucks. Mediocre coach and recruiter. At best.

Why he still has a job is beyond me. Anywhere else in the PAC his ass would’ve been canned at least two years ago.

      • 4
        2

To piggyback off of my earlier comment…………..”If he’d just go back to the blueprint from the first season (playing lockdown defense and everyone buying in) he’d probably have better success/results. But no. That’s boring and no fun.”

Let’s examine Washington State’s mens basketball program. I think we can all agree on the similarities of the two programs. WSU has not had anywhere near the success that the Bennett’s did (Dad Dick Bennett and Son Tony after he retired again) while in Pullman. The standing joke in Pullman during Bennett ball was if you’re going to a WSU game, bring a pillow. 52-51 games were not uncommon.

Ken Bone was an utter failure. Then they tried retread Ernie Kent who could not replicate the success he initially had in Eugene. Neither were defensive minded coaches and tried the same shit everyone else was/is doing.

I cannot speak about Kyle Smith as I know very little of his coaching acumen. He may get them going again. He may be another failure.

When you have apparent disadvantages in the recruiting world, you have to do something different from everyone else. When you run the same style of play that other programs are running, recruiting against, practicing against EVERY day, you aren’t going to beat the teams with better athletes and coaches. It’s just not going to happen very often. It’s not a recipe for success.

It’s not any different for OSU in football. Outside of Stanford, EVERYONE in the Pac is running a variation of the same spread offense. It’s why OSU SHOULD go back to a run oriented, pro style offense. But no. That’s boring.

Who gives a fuck? If your team is boring AND winning? Folks will get on board.

I went to several games at Gill in Stinkle’s first year and enjoyed quite a few of those wins. I seem to recall they started 5-4 in the first half of conference play and fizzled out the last 9 games due to lack of depth. But that was a team that outside of GP2 didn’t have a whole lot of talent. Tinkle realized they weren’t going to out talent anyone. So the guys bought in playing lock down defense. And if I recall, they managed to go 7-11 when they were picked to finish dead last in the conference.

If it worked once, why can’t it work again? With a little better talent?

And don’t even get me started on the accepting losing/mediocrity culture in Corvallis. Went to Reno again in late October and watched the Nevada/UNLV game at a casino sports bar. The atmosphere there was 100 times better than anything I’ve witnessed Oregon St related.

I’ll get off my soapbox and crawl back under my rock until baseball season now.

        • Oh, and Stinkle will say, “well, we were picked to finish last. I promised you we wouldn’t and we didn’t.”

Season is a SUCCESS! You only have to finish 11th to make good on that promise, coach. Way to set the bar high. Lofty goal.

  22. Looks like it was too much to hope for an inspired performance under difficult circumstances. No defense and they’ve committed 11 turnovers already. Down 13 at halftime. Let’s see if they fold or can step up in the 2nd half and at least be competitive.

  23. Welcome to the Bobcat Family, Coach Brent Vigen!
Brent Vigen, offensive coordinator at the University of Wyoming since 2014 and a former player and assistant coach at North Dakota State, has become Montana State University’s 33rd head football coach!

    • Unless you’re a masochist, stay away. Here’s a couple of numbers for you…they shot 33% from the field AND committed 20 turnovers. Thank God I just had it on in the background while I was working and didn’t commit any time to the debacle.

Thx for the summary. The last two games turnovers have been an issue. Ugly loss kind of like what happened to the lady ducks tonight in Eugene vs zona got spanked.

Not that I expected them to win but this was their 3rd game since Thursday, on the road, and at altitude. They aren’t as bad as the result.

        • Last seen in the XFL. Maybe he’ll come back once The Rock reboots it?

His Nebraska run probably torpedoed his HC career, unless he goes the Rick Pitino/Jim Calhoun route and ends up at a small school somewhere that he can win with coaching instead of recruiting. I could see someone bringing him in as a OC or “consultant” ala Dennis Erickson. Apparently Wyoming needs a new OC now.

          • 2
            1

            Being the XFL didn’t help…

People barely watch the NFL anymore. No way they’re going to go do that. I think NFL was down ~10%, and this with people at home and nothing to do…

          • BTW, did anyone notice the strange angles during the super bowl? I guess it was drones? Not sure. But the angles looked really strange and like something out of Arena football. Not a good look…

          • They were apparently experimenting with more “cinematic” camera work. I guess they think depth of field and more camera angles will bring TV viewers back?

          • The XFL was doing well and ratings were trending up with each consecutive week, and then COVID killed it. I knew a bunch of people that were getting really into it. Too bad, timing couldn’t have been worse for them.

          • Ratings could have been up out of curiosity, and wasn’t there zero sports (from memory) at the time? If the NFL ratings are down almost 10% hard to believe the XFL would trend up over any large sample size.

  24. OT stock discussion for the day: I bought ExOne at 9.99 like a month ago. Crazy to see the rise the past few weeks (+500%…jeez).

3D printing at the corporate/manufacturing level made so much sense once Covid hit, but it took the market forever to figure it out. Everyone threw out 3D printing with the bathwater once it was evident that consumers weren’t buying. They weren’t buying because of unreliability that’s mostly been solved, and all along the biggest use was one-off parts at the corporate level. I bought SSYS in April for $12, too, and Protolabs for $119. This sector is one of the largest beneficiaries of the Covid supply shock, imo.

Anyone buy the names I mentioned in April? I posted a list of ~25 names I loved. They are absolutely crushing/outperforming the overall market.

    • Curious about how much time you spend per week or month on reviewing the necessary information and taking actions? Do you enjoy the process and the time you put towards it?

      • I’m not sure. It depends what’s going on in markets and how difficult it is to read. But definitely hours, and I do love it. A lot of it is intuition at this point. E.g. I called the last btc top at 42k using zero charts. Called the retrace to 30k. Etc. No charts, just feeling the pulse of markets/gut. This makes sense when you realize a lot of the moves are pi cycle, fibonacci sequence, etc. So after a while you can intuitively feel these very predictable mathematics.

    • My Tilray stock is moving nicely I was excited to see a 300% return a few days ago. It’s at 600% for me at close today. Should have dumped everything I had into it at 3.50 a share. But compared to most I’m playing with pocket change.

      • Good. I bought TOKE (ETF) the day Dems won the Senate. Been good to me, and I can stop looking for the individual weed winners. Still difficult to make sense of who will take most in that space. I’m up like 40% nothing like 300%, but I have zero risk of picking (wrong) names in a nascent space.

        • Tilray was the first stock I invested in without outside help. I just did some studying of the bigger weed companies knowing at some point soon the US would be federally legalizing it (just wasn’t sure when). Tilray has deals in place with Inbev to distribute cannabis infused drinks (the beverage markets are enormous cannabis or not). They are set to merge in June with another cannabis company Aphria making it the largest weed company in the world. They also signed distribution rights for the medical side in Portugal and Great Britain all in the last few days. It also help that the cocaine Mitch is open to reclassifiing cannabis in the US (news from last week).
It seems the stars are aligning for weed to go ligit right now.
I’m sure I’m just lucky with this stock, but it sure is satisfying to be able to do it on my own. And I’m not dealing with life changing amounts of money (wish I was) but its still fun seeing those stocks fly.

          • Congrats.

I studied weed a lot in ’18, and could never figure out a clear winner. I thought Canopy was setup well with the Constellation deal. But never liked that CEO. Then he got canned, and they haven’t done much without him. Weed was overproduced, driving down price. Industry problem. Too much of a commodity. The specialty drinks and all that are key – less of a commodity. But I’m not sure Tilray/Alphria is the play. I think for now Toke is the play and you just take the muted returns (which are still good compared to the SPY500).

Companies like Coke will get involved once weed is legal, too, so I’m not sure what you wrote above will remain true. It’s true…for now.

          • I agree coke (and other beverage companies) will invest in it. But tilray/inbev will most likely be first to market on a large scale (nationally). At least that’s what I’m banking on. Reading into canopy/cronos/aurora and a few other players, there’s talk of beverage but no real action on it. Tilray is positioned well if and when it’s federally legalized. Im geared up for it to make the big jump then sell and wait for the retraction back to reality.
BTW this is me totally playing over my skill level, I’m make assumptions and gambling on them and its worked so far. If I’m right my wife might get that remodel on the house, if I’m wrong I’m still set up to make a nice chunk of change and dream about what could have been.

          • My approach was to try to find who had a competitive advantage already. With a commodity, it’s usually about scale or some kind of unique access. Most players LOOKED overpriced at the time, but Green Thumb Industries (GTBIF) was one that caught my eye based on their existing footprint as a distributor in a lot of states where weed was legal or would soon be legal. I waited for the price to come down, but it never did and it’s up something like 6x since I was doing my research. C’est la vie.

  25. Not really news worthy, but recruiting related. It appears the football team is looking at one of our 2022 baseball commits, Dallas Macias. He has played varsity WR all 3 years so far in HS, but seems to be primarily focused on his baseball career.
I dont have anything definitive to say about this relationship though, as it’s still pretty early on.

    • Looks like the games will be streamed, but at a cost:
Beavs Baseball schedule shows “Flosports”, from the surprise site, “Plans from $12.49/month”

  26. Question for those of you who are dedicated to purchasing products made in the USA. I’m curious if anybody knows any good domestic producers of stainless steel camping dishware?
How do you go about researching what to buy when looking for products made here?
Any time I search on Amazon, I’m almost never can find the place where a product was manufactured. Seems like that should be part of every product’s description.
I’m trying to do my part and focus on US products where I can. Any help would be appreciated

    • I’d look on Etsy. Found a handmade steel hatchet on there. They seemed to have a lot of people hand-making things like that.

It’s possible they get the steel from China, then forge it here, though…

      • Etsy’s been pissing me off lately. Last two items I’ve purchased on there were advertised as handmade, but one was shipped directly from Bangladesh and the other from China.
They get you thinking your purchasing from some person making crafts in their home shop, but now it’s being taken over by people serving as middle men for foreign products

        • E-bay doesn’t provide manufacturing info either (or if they do, it doesn’t stare you in the face, which is what I would like) and in an effort to avoid Amazon – as though I am affecting bezo’s billions – I’ve learned many e-bay sellers stock up on amazon products – not sure how they profit.

      • Just family campground camping. It doesnt need to be lighweight or high tech. I’m finding it to be pretty much impossible to find any domestic manufacturers of metal camping dishware.
It it’s steel, it’s from China or Japan.
If it’s American, it’s plastic or some type of silicon.

The Finex cast iron stuff I have that’s made in Portland is awesome and weighs a ton. Probably not what you’re looking for but I thought I’d plug it anyway.

          • That Finex stuff is great for backpacking, helps build leg strength, can be used as a weapon for bear defense, and oh, you can cook with it.

Seriously, great looking stuff, thanks for pointing it out.

          • I should have mentioned, I’m only trying to track down dinner plates/bowls. We actually have pretty much only all-clad cooking pots/pans in our house. they’ve been great.

I spent way too much time looking at this stuff yesterday. Like Helmsley mentioned above earlier, most sites bury the “made in” information, if they bother offering that information up at all. Just digging in on this one type of product has been pretty interesting as I surf the net. For instance, if you look on Amazon, you’ll see the same exact product marketed multiple times, with different “manufacturers” each time. but it’s almost always the same exact shit, with poorly photoshopped pictures of white people sitting around their plates, or oversized food cut and pasted onto the plate. Poor photoshop = China.

There are also a ton of “american” brands that market these types of plates, or claim to be earth friendly/sustainable options, but their stuff is almost always made overseas too. The main complaint i keep seeing with the Chinese stainless steel is that it stains, pretty easily. There’s some pretty nice looking Japanese steel products, but I’m going to keep trying to find something domestic, just not very optimistic I’ll find it.

check out the product pics on this page for some of the photoshopping I’m talking about. it’s so bad.

            https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07XY3P5XY/

          • Well, I would say go titanium if your backpacking but your not so I’m useless. I will say back around 1989 or so I was camping with the family at diamond lake for the trout fishing opener when I burned my hand on an old school aluminum camping plate my mother had just scooped mashed potatoes and a nice 16 inch trout on too.
I have one finger with very little finger print left. Heat transfer is a thing.

  27. NB, I see the slew of offer Tweets from this morning on C/O ’23 and ’24 guys. To my knowledge, we haven’t typically offered guys this early in the past. Could this be a change in recruiting strategy?

    • It’s not too unusual. We often offer a handful of guys a few years early. I think it might help get in the door with certain coaches and programs because it helps get their guys some early recognition, but these guys rarely end up coming to OSU. Might help us get other players later though, from the same programs.
GA’s staff offered an 8th grader once, and a couple of HS freshmen too.

      • There have been a few guys that have mentioned they liked us because we were their first offer, but, of course, the guys getting early offers are almost always the guys getting 20+ high-level offers.

  28. Well that sucks. oregon just hired one of our recruiting staffers, JR Moala, to be their director of recruiting operations.
So we have lost 2 of our main recruiting staff in the last week.

      • 4
        2

That’s a promotion for him. Good for him. Again guys leaving for betters roles is fine. JS can sell the spot as a jumping off point to potential candidates.

His position will see a lot of turnover anyway. Moala came on board just last year. And the guy he’s replacing at Oregon only lasted one year as well. So is the loss big? not really. Could be if they don’t replace the position which they might to save costs.

  29. JP morgan, Goldman Sachs and Bank of America are calling for a Supercycle in the commodities, more specifically oil, as demand will surge once more vaccines are available, squeeze on oil supply tightens due to policies for clean energy….the last supercycle seen was about 12 years ago. CDEV is oil and NG production and has gone from $0.52 to $3,36 in just the past 6-8 weeks. I got in last year @$0.82 and then pandemic hit after it went up to $2.21 and then dropped as low as $0.52. I hung in there and it sounds like thing are set to go off very soon. WTI expextd to hit $80 a barrel this spring. $3.36 could be a bargain based on oil trending up and supply and demand starting to come back into balance.

    • I wouldn’t listen to anything those banks say. They notoriously and consistently trade against their clients.

This idea there will be huge demand is a half truth. I might go back to eating out once a month, but I’m not going to eat out a week straight to make up for past demand, nor will I eat out twice a month in some attempt to make up lost experiences. The base case is we go back to prior to covid, maybe even a little less as many people will be afraid to do things still. On top of that, many people are still (structurally) unemployed and won’t be returning to any job.

      • Partially agree but the proof is in the pudding or in this case, the oil…..and right now with a squeeze on supply (OPEC continuing to hold the line on production levels), a cold snap in Asia, and increased demand in China, has resulted in the WTI ppbl and CDEV has taken off. But you are correct, big corps will often send signals that are misleading. Is all I know for certain is my stock has gone up from $0.52 last March to $3.36 today and all indications suggest it will go higher once more vaccines are available, stabilizing Covid, and another round stimulus funding.

        • I think the top for oil is around $80 until it gets the inflation push (likely next year). I like other commodities more, but I bought those in April…

        • Because of shale oil production, gas supply goes up (prices go down) when oil prices go up. Many oil wells produce more gas than the E&P’s can collect, process, and transport, so they just burn it. The reason gas prices are high is lower oil production due to E&P margins getting squeezed, and thus lower gas production. Also, the cold weather this winter caught most people by surprise, so that extra demand wasn’t baked into futures pricing.

OPEC+ Russia have so much production capacity it’s highly unlikely prices will stay at $80 for long, if they ever get there. It’s unclear how the shale producers will react, but they need cash to pay off the debt coming due in the next two years, so they’ll probably turn on the spigots, too. There is absolutely not a lack of oil to the extent that prices will remain elevated for a significant period of time.

Also, as angry alluded to, The End of COVID is likely to be gradual in the spring and commuting is not going to suddenly revert back to what it was (likely ever again). There’s a lot of pent up travel demand, so the summer vacation season should see a travel boom, but, again, E&P’s around the world have enough capacity to meet the demand (and you can bet the whole supply chain will be ready for a surge in demand).

There are plenty of other commodities that are poised to boom like copper, nickel, tin, zinc, possibly iron ore. Those are generally more straightforward to try and trade/go long than oil and less volatile.

    • Sorry, but I just couldn’t help myself after reading who penned the article…..

“Elizabeth Sheehan and Megan Ward, both associate professors of English at Oregon State University, wrote this commentary in collaboration with other concerned faculty members in the College of Liberal Arts.”

    • I run a non-profit and you don’t always get to determine who donates what and for what project. You can have a number of projects available for donors to pick and choose from. The Reser project existed before the pandemic. Bottom line if someone wants to give you money for a designated project you say thank you and take it. These two are idiots.

  30. Steel dish update.
In my quest to find US produced steel dishware, I came across one company so far. They make really nice looking stuff. The only catch, they only make bowls…..and they’re for pets.
But honestly, I wouldn’t be opposed to buying pet bowls for my family to eat from. They’d never know.
Adding a link in case any of you have any pets who may need a new set of dishes. Give them a look.
