So, things have been quiet, and I don't want to force the issue by writing about topics not worth discussing. Also, I've been working on some other hobbies during this slow period, and I'll be taking some vacation time this week (going to Sequoia and King's Canyon National Parks). Okay, that's enough about me.

You all can use this post to discuss anything you want or break any news that might spring up while I'm gone. Just over two weeks before things start picking up…get your weekend trips and chores out of the way now, fellas.

    • It is nice that OS has a high profile “good guy”. My only fear is that the media loves to tear down the “good guys”, so I hope MR is extra dilligent in keeping the program clean.

  1. I’m not sure what to think of this one yet. I knew some of the people mentioned in this article once upon a time.
    http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/bk/bkc/men/7657991.html

There are going to be a lot of stories told about this situation which nobody can verify. Salinas royally screwed his associations on the hoops side of his life by not being there for them now. He could have been the straightest arrow in AAU history, but now other people and what appears to be some hard financial numbers get to paint him in a different light.

  2. Going to be in Oregon during the Labor Day Weekend, trying to get the feel if some of the family would want to go watch the Sac State intersquad game, or just BBQ and watch it at home as a group…can’t decide.

  3. I’ve heard Darius Powe has dropped the Beavs from consideration after listing them in a top three previously. Apparently Riley is firm on 2 WR’s for this class, and both spots are filled. So Powe never got an offer, and he was told why. Not sure if he wanted to be a Beav, but he isn’t sticking with the other schools he listed as his primary focus. He’s now saying he’s wide open… except for the Beavs.

    So… Kenny Lawler?

    • That’s interesting JackBeav. Where are you hearing this?

I would think, that if Riley could pull in more 4-star guys, that he would go over the limit just to increase the overall talent/star-rating of the class…

The recruiting sites say Powe is the better of the two between him and Gilmore, as well.

Whats the news on the ASU commits switching over to the Beavs …. Kenny Lawler and Richard Smith?

Gilmore said he’s heavily recruiting 5-8, 165-pound Richard Smith, a shifty four-star receiver from Long Beach (Calif.) Poly, who ranks as the 34th-best wideout by ESPN.

I would like to add a speed WR. Apparently Gilmore isn’t that fast:

Malik Gilmore was a big target for Jake Rodrigues on Team Land Sharks. His tall frame and knack for finding the open pocket gave him the chance to haul in a lot of catches. He won’t win many footraces but is a great addition to an already solid Oregon State class. His stock is certainly up following the event, and it will be interesting to see if the Beavers can keep him locked up.

      • It’s just rumors at this point, but the person who told me this rarely passes on rumors, and he’s usually right when he does. The Lawler question was my speculation on top of his rumors.

I like Gilmore a lot because he’s a receiver first. He runs routes and catches the ball with his hands. Sure speed helps, but it’s useless if the secondary knows where you’re going to go. Besides, we have full package kids with speed to burn in Cooks and Zimmerman. If Lawler is added as another speed guy, we have a pretty full stable.

Remember that Gilmore was working Powe as well as Smith. If Smith has value in special teams, Riley would likely extend his limits for an ATH at WR. But I’ve only heard that the WR spots are filled… so my assumption that it stopped at two was also my own. I guess it could be three in your scenario. But I don’t think the rumors stay this quiet when we start talking numbers versus an individual.

Perhaps Lawler is in, and he’s working Smith with Gilmore to decommitt from the Tridents and move our way? That would satisfy both rumor and conspiracy.

        • I hope turning away Powe won’t piss Gilmore off too much to where he thinks about going elsewhere …. I don’t know how good of friends they are even if they play on the same HS team.

If the WR spots are filled, I would hope the other(s) would get confirmed by the recruiting sites soon.

          More:

Kenny Lawler did not show up good or bad in any way at the event. Lawler had one of the top quarterbacks at the event in Zach Kline but the two could not establish any chemistry. The current “soft” ASU commit will look around and take several visits before signing day. Nebraska, UCLA and Oregon State are all in the mix for the 6-foot-3 wideout.

Darius Powe also didn’t show up big in any one way at the event. Powe was also teamed up with high school teammate Malik Gilmore, on Team Land Sharks at ‘The Opening.’ He’s big and strong and has a slew of offers from the entire Pac-12 except for USC and ASU. Gilmore has been working on Powe to join him at Oregon State, but he is not in any rush to decide soon.

Richard Smith also did not show up in any big way at the event. It doesn’t mean he’s not talented nonetheless since the wide receiver position was stacked with talent. Smith is committed to Arizona State and is a bit of a sleeper in this class. He’s fast with speed to burn and runs clean routes. The current ASU commit may take some visits but remains solid to the Sun Devils.

I would like to hear more about OSU’s chances at some of the higher ranked RBs they have offered:

          Byron Marshall
          Keivarae Russell
          D.J. Foster
          Chris Brown
          etc.

For once, I would love it if OSU got a speedster at RB.

          • Of those RB’s, I like Brown best. I have a hard time watching fast kids like Marshall or Foster rely on speed to get to the edge play after play. They just seem to be afraid to play the whole field.

It’s like my dad told me when I was a kid trying to hammer in a nail by holding the neck of the hammer, “You know, Jack, I paid for the whole hammer.”

All I know is that Marshall looks like a typical Cal RB, and we’re not on Foster’s radar anymore.

          • Maybe Marshall will go to Oregon…

They may be in need after this year.

            LaMichael (gone)
            Barner (gone)
            Seastrunk (possible transfer/DQ)
            Dontae W. (Transferred)
            DeAnthony T. (pending investigation?)

          • I can’t find any video of Brown.

Out of the other guys, I like D.J. Foster the best, but I don’t think he has interest so that’s moot. Russell runs like a smaller version of Darren McFadden. Not seeing a lot of toughness in his highlights, but his skills are solid. Not a huge fan of Marshall, but I’d take him–he’s probably better than anyone currently on the roster. David Smith is high on the Beavers, but he runs upright/stiff and doesn’t have breakaway speed. He’s so stiff I wonder how he’d do as a blocker and pass catcher…

I say let’s skip on a RB this year and use that scholie on a CB. The time to parlay Quizz into a 4 or 5-star recruit was last season, and Riley didn’t seize it.

          • Yep…..find a burner at WR, and RB. I dont think Rogers is going to be healthy.

Other teams like UO can score on any play…..while OSU has to grind it down the field. It aint fair! Is Steven Jackson the last breakaway threat that OSU had?

  4. The trick with Kelley will be to phrase a question that is in THE GRAY AREA as duck fans love to say. A clever person might lead him into something. Certainly he has the balls to step over the line when he shouldnt, just like he did with Canzano, lying about knowing Lyles. Get his hubris going and see what happens…

    • I heard it on the radio as I was driving home, but the specifics were vague. Is LSU getting any kind of substantial punishment?

      • 1 year probation, loss of two scholarships: http://www.oregonlive.com/collegefootball/index.ssf/2011/07/ncaa_to_discuss_lsu_football_i.html

Traditional big-10 and SEC powers are getting hit, USC already has, GT too, and they’re not done with Auburn. it makes it difficult for me to believe UO doesn’t get something serious. I just can’t see an upstart program, impatient to be big time, getting off free, even with Knight’s backing.

The “Cowboy Classic” could be feature two teams with nothing to play for at the end of the season…if they’re any justice.

OSU is going to be loaded with WR’s and has some good Qb’s in the pipe. Time to give Mike Leach a 3-4 year stint as an O-coordinator so OSU can take advantage of all of this talent. Leach would get back in good graces after OSU’s first rose bowl in forever and move on to a head coaching gig somewhere else. : )

  5. @rsteve
Wheaton is a burner, and Rodgers isn’t far behind.

I think speed is more important at RB than WR. WRs can get open using technique and smarts…plus Gilmore is a beast, physically. He’ll be solid if not great.

FWIW, Mamma Machado is reporting Powe has OSU and Michigan State in his top 2…

        • Yeah, Aluesi is going on his mission.

Henry is going to Arizona Western JC. I’m not sure if he’s going to try to get qualified early or if he’ll stay for a couple years. Kid need to bulk up, so maybe he redshirts and tries to get qualified.

  6. Since we’re talking RB prospects here…

    … here’s a kid I think is WAAYYY underrated.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hkBv731JmyI

I think he’s a shade under 5’10”, but I don’t know why he’s only a minor Big East target. I see big time in this kid’s game. And he already runs a pro set zone blocking scheme. He just looks like your typical 1000 yard plus OSU RB.

    Remember the name Nigel Jones.

    • They list Marty Lees as a replacement. That would be the end of the baseball program as we know it. Scott Brosious would be the hire.

Also, once kids hear Casey say “it’s something I’ve been thinking about” you have to part ways…can’t have a coach who admits to having one foot out the door. I know he’s done it in the past, but I don’t think it was this blatant where he comes out and says he wants an administrative job.

      • Agree completely. I would hate to see Lees be the next head coach, I have no confidence in him. Brosius would be the perfect fit for the program.

I think Casey is resigning. He does this stuff every year but never to this extent before. He sounds like a guy who’s worn out and probably needs a few years away from coaching. He’ll probably return to coaching in a few years but needs time off now. Wish he could stay for many more years but that just doesn’t appear to be the best decision. I’ll always love him as a coach but it’s best for both sides to part ways.

        • I’m worried about keeping this recruiting class now. We just landed Andrew Moore (over Oregon)…Casey was the difference in his decision. I bet that’s true of a lot of these guys. Could be in for some dark years unless they hire the perfect guy who can stop the bleeding and instill confidence. An Ex-Yankee/Oregonian would do that.

          • I agree. I think even without Pat Casey next year’s team will be tremendous and probably so will the squad in 2013 because of all the young talent they have right now, but after that if they don’t hire the right guy they’re in trouble. It is important they get a guy like Brosius who commands respect being a native Oregonian and played in the big leagues. High school kids will want to play for him.

          • As a Linfield alum, I’d hate to see Brosius to, but he’d be better off at OSU. Maybe Casey could step into an associate head coaching type thing like Carnahan did at Linfiield when Brosius took over for him. Still in the mix for a while.

        • I’m not sure why the down sentiment on Lees. The team takes a hit no matter who takes over. I would worry more about who the next assistant will be.

Would Yeskie and Bailey stay on as happy assistants? Does Lees carry their blessings as well as Casey’s?

His first move should be to correctly gauge their sentiments and act accordingly… if it ever comes to this scenario.

Lees’ hiring does not preclude Brosius’ hiring as an assistant, which which would be a promotion for him. So he could always fill the open spot left by Lees as INF/recruiting assistant.

I also like Mike Grahovac of Concordia Irvine as a potential future assistant.

    • This is funny, maybe they can call the LSU/Oregon game “The Complete Scouting Services” Probation Bowl and Willy and associates can take video footage of the game using an old Betacam and sell it back to the Ducks and Tigers for 25k.

      • And the Oregon videos from Willy never did materialize, right? I wonder if they were also of such poor quality and usless information that the Duck powers that be thought it best to just play dumb as to what happened to them because if they were found and viewed it would hurt their argument further?

        • This actually REALLY hurts their argument, and it peels a couple layers off of an actual cover-up.

Nikegon has said repeatedly that they can’t find the tapes Lyles sent them because they were somehow swallowed by their video database and magnificent filing system–apparently a system which allows total forgetfulness with no ability to source.

Now that we know what Lyles sent as a video package to LSU (and we will find out about Cal’s as well), the NCAA can compare everything and find the Ducks’ videos for them.

LSU stepped in this one as well. Though it’s nowhere as serious unless he was some LSU player’s “mentor” along the way as well. Still, since they were recruiting Seastrunk, their contacts with Lyles would be illegal.

The NCAA giving LSU that one major violation the other day starts the clock on their death penalty watch. If Lyles uncovers another major violation over the next couple years, I don’t think the NCAA walks away without another 10-15 scholarships and several years of post season bans.

It already doesn’t help Nikegon that Gary Campbell is front and center in this one given his propensity to commit fraud.

  7. LOL….the full story on Lyles sure hasnt been told yet.

UO got a series of good players from Texas, and it cost them $25k. Cal and LSU got fewer and paid $5k and $6k. Makes sense.

I cant see UO getting off lightly, when big wheels USC and tOSU are getting whacked. Go….NCAA!

I noticed in the comments that some are moaning that all the big time programs will get it, leaving nothing…..yeah, just the honest guys. Level that playing field!

  8. This is kind of an interesting read for this slow period:

    http://www.portlandtribune.com/sports/story.php?story_id=131119424692053600

I think its a positive that receivers are learning the routes of all 3 positions, and wonder if that isn’t a result of the coaching change.

I imagine Katz running read-option like Dalton at TCU as opposed to a qb at Oregon – keeping the chains moving and keeping D’s slightly off balance (Dalton managed to keep OSU off balance all day long….).

    • I agree we need to add an option/running element for the QB, but given OSU’s history with injuries it makes me cringe, too.

  9. The Stanford blog, Gomightycard, asked me for a Beaver prediction…that might be available later today if anyone wants to check it out.

          • To summarize, Otis Yelverton was a high school coach in North Carolina. He coached at a couple of regular high schools (where he was fired for illegally recruiting kids to transfer to the two schools where he coached.) Later, he became the coach of Oak Ridge Military Academy – a prep school. At that time, he used his relationship with Phil Knight to solicit a $40,000 a year donation of uniforms and equipment for the academy football team. He also helped Gabe King transfer to South Eugene High School and arranged for a whirlwind west coast recruiting trip for King and four other players. At that time, 2009, Mike Bellotti stopped recruiting King. Hmmm…a top recruit transfers from across the country practically to your doorstep…and you stop recruiting him? Really? Maybe because he was living with Otis Yelverton’s cousin and former Duck player Dino Philyaw? Speculation was that Yelverton was also asking for ‘favors’ to deliver those players. One of those players committed to Oregon. The other 4 to Cal.

Coincidentally(?) Yelverton now lives in Berkeley. Wonder what favors he was asking for?

So for the Oregon State related part…last year, we recruited Kenzel Doe, Chris Lampkins and Jeremy Reynolds and all three committed to us from Oak Ridge. Then Yelverton started dicking around with Doe and he switched commitments to Wisconsin. We pulled our offers to the other two kids, which is something Riley never does. He was absolutely livid.

When Jeff Tedford goes down for this, I bet he rats out Oregon for everything he knows about.

          • Pretty good summary.

Yelverton will continue to “mentor” the 20 or so kids he steered toward colleges, and he will “mentor” 15% of the salaries those who make it to the NFL get.

          • Granted Riley doesn’t flip obscenities at everything that moves like the side-mouth breather down here in Eugene. But that’s because his fuse isn’t 1.05 inches long.

          • Cal should be screwed, but something tells me they’ve covered their tracks…otherwise Oregon wouldn’t be petrified of Tedford. I’d be worried if I were a Cal fan, but more so going forward now that they’ll be under the microscope.

    • Hey Angry, is there any way you can change a setting on this site to make links open in a new window? I always click a link, read/watch it, then close the window only to realize I forgot for the 100th time to back out back to this site?
      Just a suggestion.

    • I must say that I’ve been a bit suspicious of the way that CAL seems to get high profile recruits year after year and yet underperform every year. I would have thought that would have caught up to them by now. I would think recruits would be saying, no thanks.

  10. Picked up an article from PO:
    http://paloalto.patch.com/articles/football-seniors-suit-up-one-last-time-in-charlie-wedemeyer-all-star-game
    _____
Another player getting ready to make a big college decision is Westmont tailback Alex Kamara. Kamara carried the ball six times for 28 yards on Wednesday night.

“I’m flying up to Oregon on July 30th,” Kamara said. “I’m either going to go play for Oregon State University or I’ll come back down here and play for Foothill (College).
    _____

    Interesting stuff. 6’2″, 225#… ran an 11.32 100m and a 23.16 200m this past spring. Yikes!
    Kamara’s senior tape:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ubCyiJTgzu4
Lower level of competition, but he puts up the gaudy numbers you should expect if you’re truly a baller at that level.

    • I wonder how many tackles he ran through. I realize it is just high school, but how many times was he hit by 2+ guys and just run through them? Awesome

    • DANG! He drives his legs and doesn’t stop! Love that! Also, he has great vision and he’s able to do the things he does because he’s able to play at a faster speed than the rest of his competition. The fans know that once he has open space, he’s either gone for a TD or he won’t be stopped until he runs out of real estate. I sure hope we get him to commit to OSU!!!!

  11. This has been going on since yesterday:
    https://twitter.com/#!/finebaum/status/93762215609503744

    Fascinating if true.
    http://aol.sportingnews.com/ncaa-football/story/2011-07-21/pay-for-play-allegations-wont-go-away-auburn-gene-chizik

I shall begin the whole “What happens if *sniff* all the cheaters *sniff* get caught? *WHAAAAAA!!!*”

You know there are morons out there trying to float this as a rational justification against catching and/or punishing cheaters.

  12. I am spending this week with the Boys of Summer.

A stubborn, cold, rainy, snowy spring has wafted into some poetry-inspiring summer days. Visiting family came and left. I travelled elsewhere and returned.
I was ready for a baseball game. Green grass, sunshine, hot dogs. Bliss! The Legion JV and Varsity teams were playing four days in a row. Including double headers, that would be six games. I love baseball at this level. The JV players are still skinny and sweet and having a grand time. The seniors on the Varsity were playing their last home game before the state tournament – moments to be savored by players and parents alike. Wasn’t it only yesterday I took him to T-ball? The weekend’s record was 5W-1L. I thought the skill level was excellent; true throws, timely hits, and even a double steal. The kid who looked least likely to hit a home run, hit one. I think the men who coach these teams deserve all the credit anyone can give to them.

The Kindrick Legion ballpark here is a gem. Stan Musial was reported to have pronounced it one of the most beautiful small ball parks in the US. I don’t know when he would have been in it, but . . . http://www.littleballparks.com/Stadium/2007/Helena/Helena.htm
It is named for Ace Kindrick. He and some friends kept Legion ball alive after WWII. I think Margaret Mead’s statement about never doubting what a few committed people can do, applied to him although she probably didn’t have baseball in mind. He drove the bus, coached, raised money – spearheaded the Pioneer League affiliation and maybe cooked the hot dogs.
Two players have died whilst playing ball there. I think that is an extraordinary sadness. Many years ago a 2nd baseman from Anaconda was struck and killed by lightning. His parents were the only ones who had journeyed over to see the game. Eight years ago, a batted ball hit a Miles City pitcher, Brandon Patch. He died shortly thereafter. His parents sued Louisville Slugger. As I understand it, there have been changes to the aluminum bats as a result.
Montana’s high schools don’t have baseball, so it’s all Legion. Furthermore, there isn’t any college baseball in the state. The only superstar from Montana would have been Dave McNally – who, l believe, was one of only a few pitchers to ever hit a bases-loaded home run – in a World Series, no less.
There is presently a catcher for the Padres – Rob Johnson – from Butte. Butians are tough. The Bulldogs had a fabled wrestling coach – Jim Street. His teams travelled internationally and once, when someone set up a bank account for donations, he allowed that the team would be working for their money, not begging for it, so they made picnic tables, washed windows, etc.

As if the Legion games weren’t enough (and they would have been), the Helena (Milwaukee) Brewers, featuring none other than Parker Berberet catching are opening a 4-game home stand. I can’t make it tonight –but I’m there for the other three and so looking forward to it.

    • I didn’t know you were in Helena. My sister lives in Montana City.

Musial could have been through Helena for any number of reasons. He could have traveled through while he was in the minors or while he was the GM of the Cards. He might have just vacationed there while the AABC regionals were taking place… if they ever occurred there. He might have gone there on one of many speaking tours.

I’m headed to the Ems game tomorrow night against Vancouver. Baseball is always best live.

  13. I was listening to a sports show on KPAM (Beaver flagship) last night and they had a reporter on for KVAL Eugene CBS affiliate if memory serves (drawing a blank on his name), and he was definitely not a Chipster fan.

Apparently, Kelly treats the local media like crap, but always puts on the dog when he is on ESPN. This guy sounded fairly bitter about it, Chippy could use some friends in the media at this point. Maybe he should have been a little nicer to the local guys!

      • Yeah,by contrast he talked about the love-fest the Eugene media had with Belotti…even when Mike said “no comment”, he still talked for 15 minutes after that. He called Kelly out and said he should have done some one on one’s with the local stations by now. Speaks volumes that he is non-responsive.

    • We’ll be there! We’re taking our ‘Flat Tailgate Society’ on the road. Well not really but we’re gonna wade in knee-deep in Badgerville tailgates and see what it’s like on game day at a college that takes football WAY more seriously than OSU does.

        • We are renting a car and staying near campus that weekend so we won’t be putting on our own tailgate. But I’m in contact with a few groups that have offered to let us join them. As I get more details I will pass them along to any Beavers making the trip.
The latest info will be posted at the Flat Tailgate Society facebook page so it’s best to head there and ‘like’ it.

  14. Since this is open forum…my recent cross country travels were kind of sports themed for awhile. At the PDX airport waiting for a flight to MPLS, I sat across from N. Suh at the gate. I guess he was going back to Detroit. Not as tall as I expected, but built like a brick with a nasty scar on on of his knees I didn’t bother him, I was with my family anyway. A poor smuck came up to him just before boarding and said “Mr.Suh, can I have your autograph”. Suh blew him off! Maybe he was pissed about the lock out! I really wanted to tell him f-off, you should have gone to OSU, but I thought I would like to live a little longer!

Then my family and I were getting on a tram at the MPLS airport and right in front of us was Colin Cowherd. One of my boys and Delta pilot started chatting and something came up about Portland and Colin jumped right in talking to my wife and I about when he lived in Portland. His radio show can annoy me, but he was a really nice, personable guy. No pretensions at all. I did not let on that I knew who is was.

Thanks for indulging me…you guys at least know the people I am talking about!

    • I think the “rb by committee” points ate intetesting, and the coaching challenge is avoiding predictability. Similarly, the note in Katz remarks that wrs are learning each other’s routes leads me to hope that personnel packages will be more difficult to interpert.

Now thay Collins is out for fall camp, who’ll get his reps? Akina welch? I think collins for the most part picks up whete he left off when he returns.

      • Wow, this would be pretty amazing.

Definitely a better get for the track team than football…and he’s got to be a pretty huge get in football.

        • Be fair. If he was a senior last year he would have likely been a four star RB prospect if only because of his speed. But he has more skill than just speed. In two years he will be an elite national football prospect. Even if he is set on coming to OSU, there will be skeez galore in his ear until he doesn’t know if his own thoughts are his anymore.

But yeah, if it wasn’t for a strained hammy he would havecompeted in the world youths in France, and probably the Pan Am Juniors, which start today. He’s that good as a runner.

          • 2 years is a super long time and he’ll probably get a ton of offers between now and then. Hopefully he wants to stay in state. I could see how a running back would choose OSU over Oregon right now considering how stocked Oregon is at that position. The guy could come to OSU and start as a freshman like Quizz. Wouldn’t have to redshirt a year like Lache Seastrunk did at Oregon. Doesn’t hurt that he and Quizz seem to be connected.

          • I don’t love the idea that he is connected to Quizz. The NCAA has not been in love with recent connections between college and pro players. I think it is great for recruiting but I would hate to see them rule Quizz as a booster.

          • No, because I don’t care about LSU.

I do worry because irregardless of initiated contact a lot of things can still go wrong. If he ever lies about talking to Quizz, trouble can ensue. Also, you mentioned in another post its on the up and up for players who were friends in college, the caveat is that friends can’t buy friends anything. See UNC’s football team. A player enters the pros, invites friends to a party and pays their expenses. UNC players are then declared ineligible.

      • That’s astounding, I never would have thought an elite in state recruit would be such a die hard Beav. Two years is a long time though.

    • So what are the NCAA rules regarding a booster contacting someone like Thomas Tyner? I mean since I’m a booster is it ok for me to tweet him? Encourage him to come to OSU? I’ve never met him but this is a question that I’ve had whenever I attend high school games and chat it up with the players after a game.

      • It’s a gray area.

You’re allowed to sell Oregon links to Tyner’s youtube clips for $25,000 though. That much I know.

      • I think you can talk it up all you want, but no benefits.

Well, ok on the benefits…but nothing tracable. And wear a Nixon mask and use a false name….

      • I think this is an interesting question. It’s certainly commonplace for prospects to be bombarded on social networking sites by fans of schools. And a lot of boards will remind their members and readers to cool it during dead periods and the like.

Strictly enforced, it’s against the rules for anyone who is a student or a booster of a school to initiate contact with a prospect for anything besides a cursory greeting. This applies to even passing them in the airport or at the local sub shop. But the NCAA isn’t going to enforce the little rule infractions that take place all the time.

There are kids who walk down the street in their hometowns getting bombarded by fans who yell out in favor of their favorite schools all the time. Harrison Barnes commented a couple years ago about not being able to go to the grocery store without the checkers and baggers all telling him to go to Iowa. I think that sort of thing goes on everywhere, but the NCAA turns a blind eye because they know the prospects can shrug it off with a chuckle.

It’s when a noted booster gets involved that they take notice. Tyner has obviously met a lot of the OSU players as well as someone like Quizz. And he has a back and forth with Quizz on Twitter as well. Since that conversation was initiated by Tyner (and they became friends before Quizz left school) everything’s on the up and up. In fact, the prospect can initiate contact any time they want to do so. They are not bound by the NCAA to do anything yet. They can lose their eligibility before they become a member of the NCAA, but simple contacts are a free speech issue which the NCAA would never touch.

In the case of a meet and greet with players before, during and after games, it again depends on the big fish/little fish scenario. But since it’s also an in-person contact, you should limit discussions to congratulations and small talk rather than anything related to the school you support. There’s a big difference between sitting in the crowd and yelling “Go Beavs” and meeting face to face and discussing a prospect’s future.

        • “But since it’s also an in-person contact, you should limit discussions to congratulations and small talk rather than anything related to the school you support. There’s a big difference between sitting in the crowd and yelling “Go Beavs” and meeting face to face and discussing a prospect’s future.”

Thanks JackBeav, I think this sums it up perfectly for me.

  15. Being reported that Pat Casey will stepping down as head coach. Program in good shape the next two years but not sure beyond. Interesting to see who De Carolis hires.

    • WHAT!?!?!?! Really!? I didn’t think he’d be stepping down so soon!!! :'( Sad day for Beaver Baseball if true! Great Catholic man…Man of faith he is.

    • That’s just from reading his bio. He’s definitely a Beaver for right now. Hopefully he stays that way. If he does the Beavers would be getting an enormous get. He’s big time.

      • Yeah, I wonder if they had conversations about that. Something tells me Pat Casey will be as the head coach though. We’ll see if that happens. Heard Marty Lees got a head coach offer from another school, if Casey stays for another year Lees probably accepts that job. Not sure what school it is right now though.

        • There are no open D1 jobs right now. Who would have offered Lees? I heard his name mentioned when UCSB, UCSC and Fullerton had openings. And I’ve heard Gary Henderson might be on his way out at Kentucky, so Barnhart might poach Lees the same way he did Henderson.

  16. Rivals has their 2012 recruiting class rankings up on their recruiting homepage and all the usual suspects are at the top Texas, Florida, Oklahoma, etc. Now if you scroll down the list to number 21 you will find the Oregon State Beavers. I know we only have six recruits so far, signing day is half a year away, and rankings like this are completely arbitrary but this shocked me a bit. I never thought I would see Oregon State ranked anywhere near a top 25 recruiting class. There are any number of explanations for this years recruiting prowess. One of our coach’s son being a top national recruit, the program down south being in the news for good and now bad reasons, finally discarding some dead weight on the coaching staff, or who knows, maybe Riley is writing 25k checks to any Will Lyles or Bob Styles he can get ahold of. Or it’s just early and the rest of this years class will be filled out with 1* and 2* guys. I have faith the last two aren’t happening and wont be happening. Regardless of what it is, I hope it continues this year and beyond.

    • Even though it’s early, who would have thought the Beavers would be ranked higher for this year’s recruiting class than Oregon right now? I’m betting nobody. Hopefully the staff keeps up the good work and Oregon State pulls in a terrific overall class.

  17. This article discusses some off-workouts, improved consistency and work ethic.

    http://oregonstate.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1242871

Interesting remarks at bottom of the article:

“Another group that Miller and his staff work with are the incoming freshmen. We already know that they are a competitive bunch and Miller had nothing but praise to heap upon the youngsters.

“I’d say as a group they are the best physical looking group we’ve had,” he said. “There are some guys that look like they have great physical potential for growth and some that are already there. Malcolm Agnew looks really put together and is probably up to 195 pounds. Dylan Wynn is another guy like Malcolm, who has a big frame and definitely can add weight.”

Miller said that while he only has the freshmen for three weeks in July, he’s already had to accelerate the program because the guys either came in developed or simply worked so hard they were ready to advance.

“Out of this class Brandin Cooks is probably the most prepared to be a D1 wide receiver in our style of offense,” Miller said. “And then there is Tyrequek Zimmerman who is a gifted athlete.””

If Agnew continues to grow, I’m thinking the combination of him, Storm Woods, and Terron Ward makes for a pretty stable and effective future. Throw in Tyner in a few years, and you have the speed too.

The receiver position, as mentioned on this board several times, seem unusually loaded for the next 3-4 years.

    • Good article! I enjoyed that quite a bit! I wonder if the strength and conditioning coaches working with Ariko Iso is what is making their program even better? I bet that she adds a lot more than “Put Ice on it and see me in the morning” Barney Graff.

  18. The Bob DeCarolis announcement of a Parkinson’s diagnosis is big for OSU. Even if Bob D. can continue in his AD job through 2016 (his current contract), it puts in everyone’s mind that a successor is needed, sooner than later. It is a very interesting context to the Pat Casey retirement pondering. If a current coach was going to be OSU’s next AD, who do you think would be better – Mike Riley or Pat Casey? Of course, we know how the UO experiment went with Bellotti as AD – very bad.

The Bob D. announcement has the sound of a “leak” in the OSU athletic dept. So far it only appears that Bob has spoken to Kerry Eggers at Port. Tribune. The Oregonian and G-T are citing the Tribune’s article.

    • My hunch is that Bob might want to step down and focus on his health/family, and he probably talked with Casey to gauge his interest in the job. My opinion is based on the timing of all this and just reading between the lines…

    • Nice to see Dockery get picked up. I figured Linnenkohl would be snapped up pretty quickly and Chicago seems like a good fit. Olin Kreuz is not exactly a guarantee to stick with the Bears so hopefully Linnenkohl can seize this opportunity and make the team.

Ugh…Jeremiah Masoli to my beloved 49ers. I’m not liking that.

      • Masoli is a proven winner. I wouldn’t sweat that at all. He may never crack the depth chart but if he does he could bring winning to a team that needs it.

  19. Ok, the media conference has come and gone…. Riley still sounds passive, Kelly was articulate in stonewalling, the UO issue release said nothing.

Question…..since some of you guys know the history — is this consistent stonewalling (we have done nothing wrong and want to continue following the rules…yata yata) going to have a positive effect on the NCAA? Is it going to accomplish something beyond all the media and real fans calling you liars when violations are found?

Seems to me some violations are for sure — your recruiting service, to be legit, has to list product and price quarterly, and only be offering info. tOSU went for self sanctions….should UO?

    • Actually, except for the first answer Riley looked like the most comfortable of all the coaches up there. He wasn’t asked much of anything, but he was thorough and direct on what he was asked.

This is the first time I’ve seen Kelly visibly shaken. He put on a front for the cameras. But knowing who he is and how he normally acts, he was a sheepish version of himself. It was likely more to do with the school telling him to just shut it than it was anything to do with potential questions he might be asked. But he still looked like he wished he didn’t need to be there.

I especially liked his body language when he said (more than once), “I wish I could talk about all of it, and I will once the outside lawyer’s report comes in.”

Dude should be taught some basic no-no’s in non-verbal communication.

  20. He did keep it together, though…..I was hoping for some ego to come busting thru.

I thought the media was fairly kind to him. They could have asked Q’s like — do you think you will get fired over this? His reaction to that would be interesting.

I recall the conference when Bellotti was bought out. He was getting an outrageous chunk of $$ but sure didnt look happy.

    • Any reporter who asked a question like “do you think you will be fired” would have been escorted from the room and never invited back. Plus, you might have seen Kelly come unhinged. It’s just not the forum for getting deep into the Willie Lyles weeds.

      • Really? You can treat the media that way with no consequences? I doubt it. Then each other reporter in turn asks the same question…..then there is no media in the room…..and its a press conference. You, the conference, have just screwed the pooch.

  21. LOL!! I am watching the Chipster’s press conference and his demeanor is this, “I am saying as much as I can before your questions in the hopes of getting off of this podium sooner!”

Also, did anyone catch this line from Chippy around the 2:30 mark he’s talking about current recruits and he slips up by saying, “We had a birth to the Rose Bowl 2 years ago, and a birth to the National Championship game last year and I would think…I understand that our recruits….” LOL He said I would think meaning he has no clue about the current recruits! WOW!!! No wonder Chip Kelly doesn’t like talking to the media! He doesn’t want say something that he’s not supposed to or that would get him into trouble! Really Chip Kelly?! Really?! YOU THINK?!

  22. Why can’t we have the Colorado coach?! He wants to improve the identity of his football team. He wants people to know they are physical and a hard running team….why can’t Riley get on board with an identity?

    • What identity does rhetoric provide? I would much rather have Riley than an unproven “raa raa” guy. Because we don’t have some overtly stated identity doesn’t mean we lack one or are a bad program. We don’t need to be attention whores, we can leave that to the program down south.

    • I think you misunderstood my point about the Colorado coach comment. I meant, why can’t we have a coach with that much energy, drive, and wanting to be known for something….what is OSU known for besides getting good to great running backs every 4 years, having a slow defense, and getting a 4* recruit every 2-4 years? Grant it, our recruiting has gotten a lot better with the coaching changes, but just because recruiting goes up, doesn’t mean the philosophy as a team will change.

What needs to change with this team is that they are comfortable with each other and that if a player goes down, it’s not the end of the season…that was our problem last year when James Rodgers got hurt. We fell apart and lost in 2 OT by 2 to UW because Halahuni couldn’t hold onto the ball. Getting tired cannot happen this season with only 1 BYE and having it the 3rd/4th week of the season! We play what, 3 games then a BYE and then we play 9-10 games straight without a break? That makes for a very long season!

I realize i went on a tangent, but I’m worried about this upcoming season in the fact that if the boys don’t show up for even 1 down or especially on a single drive, then we will lose games. :\

      • And what is Colorado known for in recent memory? This coach hasn’t accomplished anything yet, its all rhetoric. I am not sure what your point is, you want a coach who is boastful and arrogant? Again, I will leave that to the yucks. I know that Riley is not without his flaws but so are so many other coaches. Riley has to coach as the person he is and no one else.

I don’t think Riley yelling will make this team better. This team needs to be intrinsically motivated if they want to win. A coach can motivate but that is “extrinsic” but that follows the law of diminishing returns.

Regarding depth, when a player likes James goes down there will always be a dip in talent. Simply believing in one’s self is not enough, instead those players have to be actually talented.

p.s. We lost by one point to UW.

        • To me it is less the “raa raa” but you still want a coach who is confident and acts that way and believes he can beat anyone and get the players to also believe it. That wasn’t the case last year in that we didn’t come back from behind in any Pac-10 game to win. I am hoping Brennan will help. He seems to be well liked by the players. Hard to know how much theimproved recruiting is him or if it is more because of the Pac-12 and Larry Scott. I honestly feel it is a little more to do with the conference becoming sexier and much richer. The ultimate exposure Larry Scott is providing with ESPN and the new Pac-12 networks sure don’t hurt either since anyone in the country can now see every Oregon St. football and basketball game.

          • You think Riley is unconfident? I am not so much a Riley apologist as much as confused by the comparison between Riley and a first time head coach. I also don’t know that coach confidence has that much to do with come back wins. Our team was awful last year and it will be this year, this is almost exclusively due to recruiting. Coaching isn’t enough, we need better players. I think Riley is just fine; he should be himself and no one else when he coaches. Instead, he should hire assistants who are different than his personality so that they can yell when its needed (like he has).

  23. “[OSU’s defense] was ranked eighth in the conference last season, allowing 407.9 yards per game, and returns only four starters”

    ….Mark Banker sucks.

  24. I dont care if Riley is laid back in public, but he needs to impress on his players in private, that they are good enough, and CAN WIN. And when someone comes in all fired up, like WSU last year, have something ready to use, to fire up your guys. Pick on a Ref call, a dirty play, … something…

    • Great comment, Steve. Actually last season Riley didn’t need to have “something ready to use”, there were a number of dirty hits (see Burfit, and Jame’s injury, and…..) and bad calls to which he should have reacted. I like Riley but coaching should include motivation and an “I’ve got your back” attitude. He hasn’t shown either lately.

      • I think what I meant by “ready to use”, is to have a “role” in mind, ready to use, that is not his normal personality. Just because you are a laid back person doesnt mean you cant assume a role when need be. And if you are nromally laid back, it might strike your players even more, if you suddenly lay into the Refs. In life you need to be able to assume different roles.

        • Rsteve, I think I understood your meaning, however, I am not sure Riley fits the “Just because you are a laid back person doesnt mean you cant assume a role …” concept. I should have said that since MR can’t get excited when he really should, he is unlikely to be able to assume a planned role.

I am in agreement with your approach, just not sure there is any reason to think Riley could pull it off.

      • Agreed. I still think it’s fair to blame him for the way the Rodgers brothers were constantly receiving cheap hits. Opposing teams have all gotten the memo lately that you can punch OSU in the mouth with many, many cheap hits and then you’ll win the game.

    • So UNC acted in time for players to transfer before school begins. The timing may suck in terms of football. The ACC had their media day last week, and fall camps open up next week. But it was done at the right time for the student athletes who might want to leave.

  25. I’m just pointing to an easily identifiable app which appears on every set-top box you can imagine. HBO might be a more suitable and broad app if Netflix brings a stigma with it.

  26. I’m trying to think of things I dislike more than Netflix…probably Keith Pankey’s LB play, our (walk-on) offensive line, and the Tea Party.

  27. So I feel a bit like a voyeur, skimming Thomas Tyner’s twitter page. Some interesting things come up though. He responds to a critical duck fan in the following exchange:

    Nolan Kane
    NolanKane Nolan Kane
I get upset when a kid(@Thomas_Tyner) w/ blazing speed in football &track commits to the 1st school he visits & it doesn’t have a track team
    5 hours ago
    in reply to ?
    Thomas J. Tyner
    @Thomas_Tyner Thomas J. Tyner
@NolanKane haha so much more to it man. They just got a track team too

He also retweets some positive OSU messages that he’s come across and he appears to be in contact with James Rodgers. I’m wondering if the Rodgers brothers being buddies with Thomas is what swayed him towards Oregon State? Or maybe the lure of being the face of the renewed Men’s track&field team? Whatever it is, I look forward to 2013 with great anticipation. But I also don’t feel right reading a 16 year old kid’s twitter posts. Any thoughts on the subject?

    • I agree. We know enough for now. It’s a year and a half until he signs anywhere, so we can revisit the question later.

Still, it’s nice to hear that a mega-star has us solidly in the lead as of now. That kind of determination will prove useful when the snakes come slithering up to his door.

    • Good question.

It’s probably alright to look around and gather information, but if you’re becoming involved in their life or having emotional/vicarious reactions to their tweets then that’s a bad sign.

What you’re doing sounds fine. You’re just curious/excited about the recruit so you want to see what’s happening.

    • Why do I think the Oregon administration will figure out a way to keep Chip? I mean this is the same school that can hire an AD without a contract, pay him an outrageous buyout and get away with it.

        • Looks to me like that is true. They are not doing the self sanctioning that tOSU did. Given that they are a public institution, seems to me it should all be transparent. But it sure isnt.

To keep him they would need to whitewash his direct involvement, or the media will dance on it all the do-da-day.

But keeping a cheating coach isnt the way it seems to come down. Like Doyal said, the admin are the last to know he has to go.

  28. From Cliff Kirkpatrick’s article:

Pac-12 Media Enterprises is also expected to eventually announce distribution arrangements covering satellite and telco transmission.

  29. Just to complete the cycle, UNC’s AD, Dick Baddour was canned today… or last night.

That’s what you get for incompetently wishing a problem would go away (for months on end) while you vocally oppose the easiest way for the problem to go away–firing your cheatin’ coach.

  30. Totally unrelated topic, but the other day I met up with the Kavanaughs (Taylor’s parents) on a business deal and of course our conversation drifted to Taylor’s playing days. They told me about the work he has been doing in the Beavers without Borders program. I had heard of it before but to hear from someone closer to the program was interesting. I cannot wait for the film to debut August 12th.
This trailer gave me a chill and makes me that much prouder to be a Beaver supporter.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=30VeXpYG4EU

  31. *sigh*

It’s as if nobody who covers NCAA sports knows how the NCAA works. But I’m doubly surprised that Nikegon had no idea either given who the last NCAA prez was.
    http://twitter.com/#!/JohnCanzanoBFT/status/96628035859652609

This is the way the NCAA works:
They come into your program and look at everything. Then they go home and research that everything to the Nth degree. They drill down into every link, and they make sure they don’t miss anything. Then they come back with a letter of inquiry, a clean bill of health or a final analysis of minor infractions. If some potential violations come to light before they return to the school with findings, then they start all over again with the new info, and they re-drill every link with that info in mind to see if it changes what they previously found. It doesn’t matter if it’s totally unrelated (rental car violation) or wholly related (Lyles’ Yahoo! interview). They restart their fact-finding phase.

LSU is in a more precarious position regarding Lyles (in terms of getting a more serious punishment than might be warranted otherwise) since the NCAA completed one investigation before starting the Lyles fact-finding. If they’re found to have committed more major violations, their probation will have been violated before they were found to have been on probation. This works because LSU was not forthcoming about Lyles during their previous investigation.

  32. While looking for something else I stumbled across this and it made me laugh. From ESPN.COM, the 49ers acquistions (Signed FB Bruce Miller and Daniel Kilgore to four-year contracts and C Chase Beeler, WR Tyler Beiler, OL Donovan Edwards, T Derek Hall, WR Joe Hastings, WR Chris Hogan, RB Jeremiah Masoli, TE Konrad Reuland, LB Kenny Rowe, NT Sealver Siliga, DB Anthony West, T Kenny Wiggins, NT Ian Williams, WR Dontavia Bogan, DE Brian Bulcke, DE Demarcus Dobbs, CB Corey Nelms and RB Seth Smith.) Does this mean they drafted Masoli as a running back? lol Probably just a typo but still kind of funny.

  33. Heading down to Rickreall in a few hours for Barbecue with the Beavs. Like last year, they will have a low level assistant there to say all the right things. Tickets sales are only about half of last year. I was told it was the economy. They were told “horseshit.” 5-7 and losses to the 3 worst teams in the league = a lot of disgusted Beavers, including me. The economy wasn’t any better last year. I was told I had made my point However, Katz and Poyer are supposed to be there. I intend to ask Ryan how the hell Barney needed a whole month to discover his broken bone. He won’t answer my other question but I will ask him why after James went down the vast majority of his passes went to Wheaton with Nichols, Halahuni and Bishop being virtually ignored for long stretches. Was it his inexperience at not checking off to secondary receivers or Danny’s shitty play calling. Perhaps some of both. I’ll hoist one to all on this blog!!

  34. Since the topic is general discussion….

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a2BWd0e986E&feature=player_embedded

This song apparently is by former Beaver basketball point guard Lamar Hurd and Travis Jones. Should I know who Travis is? Is he a former Beaver athelete? I can’t find much information about him. Anyway, not that there’s much competition out there, but this is probably the best OSU related song out there I’ve found. Anybody have any others?

Here’s the original version. You can find parodied version’s for many other NCAA teams out there, but the Hurd and Jones version actually holds up with the best.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UePtoxDhJSw

    • Bibbee is rumored to have some academic issues and Dilbeck had a nasty injury injury last year, and might end up playing small-time football somewhere if he even plays again at all.

  35. Read the newest Pac-12 cbssports article today. Was very glad to hear Larry Scott and Riley walked together to the big Pac-12 Networks press conference yesterday and talked the whole way. My hope is he is asking Larry advice on how to better market and promote Oregon St to assure Reser sellouts every game. I just don’t know if Riley is that proactive in all aspects like that though. A man can hope though. Whatever rubs off on Riley can only serve us well. I think Oregon St. can be about as attractive as any Pac-12 team if it really wants to.

    http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball/story/15367320/with-unique-network-deal-pac12-goes-from-stale-to-cuttingedge

    • I am not sure asking Larry Scott advice is proper nor is it proper to ask in that forum. Are you serious? I don’t think that it is a coaches job to worry about sellouts, it is his job to worry about winning.

  36. The annual Riley approach to slow starts and mediocrity:

From the G-T: “The general summary about our team, we have to grow a lot through fall camp and through our season.”

    Read more: http://www.gazettetimes.com/sports/article_6a892504-b7b7-11e0-b8ce-001cc4c03286.html#ixzz1TT11pr1a

    From the Portland Trib:

“He is looking for growth from game to game and, by the end of the season, a plus number in the column of wins to losses.

“We’re a mystery right now,” he says, “but the opportunity for this team is big. I like the group. I’ve liked it from the start of our offseason program.”

    • A lot of the national publications have the Beavs at 6-6 with a minor bowl. They will not be able to afford a Wazzu type effort this year. They will need to win every game they are the favorites just to break even.

  37. It gets a little old. You MUST be prepared before the season not warm up during the season.

    More EXCITING NEWS:

    GSwaimBigTime TV/Radio Tweet

    “It appears #Pac12 offer forthcoming to four current #B12 teams, if it hasn’t already. #OKState #Aggies #Sooners #RedRaider #Mizzou”

(Weird tweet. Says four teams then mentions 5 teams. Later he says the PAC prefers TT and the SEC Mizzou as Team 16s. So maybe Scott still wants A&M and will fall back to MU)

  38. “Position change

The Beavers released an updated roster on its online media guide. There was one change with junior Rueben Robinson moving from middle linebacker to outside linebacker.

He had seven starts last year, platooning with junior Tony Wilson. That leaves Wilson and Kevin Unga to compete for the job this season.’

    Read more: http://www.gazettetimes.com/sports/article_e83b7d76-b9a6-11e0-ac5f-001cc4c002e0.html#ixzz1TVP7MVZ3

well, hopefully Robinson gets buried on the depth chart and doesn’t see the field. Still a waste of a scholarship, but at least its not a waste of a scholarship and MLB play. OR, maybe he becomes a good reserve at OLB, though I don’t ever recall thinking he was particularly speedy.

      • I’m just saying I’ve heard a rumor. I just went and looked at PO, and it looks like they heard the same rumor. They think it’s a DB… maybe Chris Santini.

I know it’s not Seth Jacobs, because he is visiting Cal this weekend and will give a top five after that. I’m not going to hope for Kevon Seymour or Ismail Adams since they sound like sure things for USC and Cal. But I would love to see Dalis Bruce on our sideline.

          • Why would we want him? Because he’s good.

But his father went to Cal, and he grew up in Danville. So Cal’s on his short list. But his love isn’t such that he’s going to wait forever for an offer. And Cal fans are going bonkers wanting him to get an offer. Last I heard, he was headed to SoCal for his senior year because his family moved. So Weasel will probably take a look at him as well. I think his mother went to UCLA.

A couple months ago, his list was Cal on top but no offer, the two Oregon schools and CU. He was going to camp at the other three and think about things after that.

    • I’m starting to think the friend who passed the rumor was asking because he saw the PO post. I just noticed the timestamp on PO was hours ago. He didn’t specify a DB, but nobody I know who would know anything knows anything.

  39. Great news on Robinson, I am very relieved to hear that. Although, with Bibbee apparently gone, are we only two deep at MLB? Do we have a true freshman that will serve as #3?

    • Wondering if Welch can play MLB? Did he play that in high school, and/or is he too light at DI level? If he can play the middle, there’d be a tremendous amount of speed on the field.

    • Maybe this Alex Kamara kid is being recruited as an ATH who will take the MLB spot?

I sure like his tape as a RB, and I wonder why nobody recruited him. Cali recruiting is strange sometimes. The NoCal offensive POY in 2009 (Ward) gets ignored, and this kid isn’t even a blip on anyone’s radar.

Maybe these kids need to get together, make a video package and sell it to schools for $25k a pop.

Or is their info too current?

      • I like this idea. Hopefully Kamara makes it in somehow, very interesting athlete.

He posted something on FB about waiting until the 15th for football. Which would be a week after we start fall practice. Who knows if he’s still in the mix.

        • The article referenced earlier says he’s in Oregon today. I wonder if that’s changed.

Another idea is that someone like Rusty Fernando moves to the MLB position. I thought all of last year that Gabe Miller should have been there.

If I ever see Mana Rosa on the field, I’ll be shocked. But he once had the skills to play as an athletic DE or a MLB.
