Home Athletics Rebranding Thoughts

Rebranding Thoughts

233

The Good:

  • Adding bronze to the color palette
  • Orange uniforms + helmet
  • White uniforms + helmet (stripe is somewhat busy and distracting but logo looks sweet)
  • Replacing the old logo
  • Block font

The Bad:

  • The Beaver gloves
  • The BeaVer font (i.e. the dropped "v")
  • The black uniforms and black helmet (not sure what they were thinking…horrible)

Overall I am content and don't mind it. The one thing I hate is that the black uniform sucks, and it's the one we'll probably see the most. Ugh. I'm hoping they listen to feedback and fix that one before the first game. Just put black matte on the helmet–the stripe is too busy and distracting, and it also clashes stylistically (too retro against the modern uniform).

  1. Overall my reaction was meh. Nothing really blew me away. I’d rate it as a slight improvement. Doubt any national media will take notice for a while.

    Winners –
Basketball team – Unis look solid.
Women’s soccer – Unis look like what pro teams would wear.

    Losers –
Men’s Soccer – The sash is back! Terrible look. And half and half?? wtf is that?
White football helmet – I don’t think these will see much time. Looks like a 1994 helmet.

    Other –
Should have put numbers on the black helmets.
Helmets have one too many stripes.

  2. Crazy idea, but I’d like to see an metallic copper helmet and instead of a large stripe, place some Giant white teeth right in the front/center of the helmet above the face opening. maybe some black coloring for the vents to look like eyes. in essence, a giant beaver head that looks like its chomping when you look at it head on.

  3. Baseball is 12-0. Who the fcuk cares what they were wearing this weekend? I couldn’t give half a sh!t if they were wearing tutus, as long as they can perform.

I understand the philosophy that no news is bad news; we’re getting talked up right now because of our clothes. Peel away that layer, and maybe folks will see, for example, the basketball teams underneath. Yeah, baby, I don’t care if they suck, but I want to play in those funky new threads!

Great Jumpin’ Jesus. Is this what the endeavor has come to – if we can’t succeed on the field, at least we can make a splash during fashion week.

Baseball is 12-0. How nice we’re spending the time and effort to promote success.

    • Dontt agree at all and suspect the players wouldnt either. I feel certain the players would like to be playing in good lookin uniforms, not something they themselves or even the fans, think looks silly……or funny,…. or just bad.

Pics are taken of even bad teams, and if you are losing, you can at least look good.

No, having good unis and at the same time being a losing team isnt good. But both bad unis and losing is worse.

The rebranding comes when several programs are having real success. Good timing imo.

  4. Love the orange football uniforms but especially the helmet!
The script beavers with the dropped “v” has to go. It looks like the word “beaners”.
Mens and women’s soccer may have the best uniforms of any group.
Women’s track is just plain awful and there are no men’\s track uniforms, what is up with that?

    • Maybe the best version of them all, but for limited use(?). Like day home games? As somebody else pointed out, black unis, even withe breathable fabric, are probably not the best color to be wearing on earlier season, warmer game days and might be better for night games.

  5. So is the inter-locking OS gone now? Hope so. White stripes on the black helmet still look too wide, just like they did on the giant killers.

If OSU can find a QB that can take care of the ball and throw it to the guys in these new uniforms, all will be better.

  6. I hate the white lid…in order of preference I would rate the 1)bronze/orange 2) black 3) white w/so-so logo. Numbers on the black would be nice but the center stripes are WIDE.

Like all the unis and the font/numbers. Actually like the tartan idea. Love the hip hip hooray, shows a sense of knowing who they are instead of hoping to be another program. In fact, the whole roll out speaks to that. Updated but subdued.

    • I love love love that orange helmet. When I heard there were going to be three, I thought I would like it the least depending on what they did with the logo on the white one. But it is far and away my favorite.

It’s too bad the black tops have so much white on them. If they stuck with the GK tops, that orange helmet would look great on top.

What is it with all the white on that shirt (and pants)? It’s a decent uni. But it really limits the utility of all the helmets. I would have liked one set of black pants like the Steelers’ throwbacks with the really wide yellow stripe, only orange. That would work with all the tops… again not so much with the black one since it has so much white on it.

      • Yeah, who knew Nike could actually come up with a respectible hat for the football team. After the leak, and based on the clown costumes they put together for the quacks, there wasn’t much goodwill in the bank.

  7. Was just watching talkin ball on comcast and they had some nice HD footage from the uniform unveiling tonight. Have to say, they all looked pretty slick. It looked much better in full resolution than it did in the live video feed. the orange helmet was getting lots of praise from the panel (none of which were beaver homers). I actually liked the black uniforms too. one detail Isaac Ropp pointed out was theyve painted the center of the grill on the facemask to stand out and look like Beaver teeth. this is most evident with the black helmet. the guys on the show thought they were the nicest looking uniforms in the pac and that they kept a nice classic feel while still being fresh and new. like them or not, that good publicity is exactly what this whole thing was about.

    • They talked about is last year, and I think what they said is that before the game the players decide what ones they want to wear.

  8. I personally like the black helmets, maybe it is because I haven’t seen a pic with the logo on it yet. Logo and cursive writing is a fail, the new type face is nice and the jerseys have grown on me a bit, still think the Cincy Bengals want their practice jerseys back.
Please never wear the white helmet, spring game only if there is a contractual obligation. Technically it will be on TV, though no one will see it.

  9. I really like it. While the Beaver isn’t really better or worse, it goes okay on the helmet, but worse on a shirt. I was trying to picture different combos for away games. I like the idea of the black hats, white tops, and black pants. I suppose they’ll go all white for most of the games.

yahoo guy likes the new look, and he is a Doctor:
    http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/ncaaf-dr-saturday/oregon-state-gets-rebeaved-beavers-look-lot-different-045048032–ncaaf.html

  10. Yup. Some limp wristed Nike faggot (along with that dip-shit bobby d) has just about put feathers on the logo. Kinda gives it that airy, fruit of the loom look doesn’t it. Something a hint of mint fag and a dip-shit would like.

Oh yeah and that hip hip bull shit will really pull in the top recruits. Yeah, right.

I still say if Dr. Ray gave a flying fuck about OSU athletics he’d fire that dip-shit bobby d.

  11. Overall I’m not elated, probably underwhelmed, is the right word.

The uniforms are an improvement and they could use some small adjustments that others have pointed out (stripes to wide etc).

I don’t like the new beaver.

The things that stand out the most are
    • Missed opportunity to make a logo that has national recognition. Like the ‘O’ at Oregon, the ‘S’ at Stanford, the Penn State Logo, the ‘A’ at Alabama, Texas Longhorn Logo etc. All are instantly recognized. I neither hate nor like the new beaver, but I don’t think it will have the national recognition many were hoping for. My wife commented that it looked like the shape of New England Patriot Logo with a beaver stuffed in it.
    • Cohesiveness across the sports. Why this was promoted as such a big deal. It shouldn’t have taken a rebranding effort to make this happen. This is something you just do.
    • Baseball/Softball absent from the uniforms presented. Why?
    • Beaver script is not new, it’s just a tweak on an already existing one that was on the football uniforms in 2001, and it had the ‘dropped’ V then too.
    • We returned to the block lettering. It seemed a common objection when we became OS that we went away from this lettering, now it’s back with a slight twist.
    • Will these fonts/logos/scripts be just used in the Athletic Dept or the University as a whole? It seems that the schools that use their logo/fonts/scripts consistently throughout the university also have the greatest recognition.

I think the biggest let down was the missed opportunity.

  12. I’m buying the logo, but I’m ditching the outline when I buy anything. I’m not quite sure why they have the pointy outline. I guess they’re the experts. It doesn’t have to be the best it can. It just has to appeal to someone. It’s still a thousand times better than the angry muskrat.

I like the BeaVers script. I do think the V is overstated, but the script is similar to what it was before the late 70’s when they came up with the ugly broken one we eventually stuck under the angry muskrat… because two uglies make it un-ugly (dis-ugly?).

The block wordmark is fine. It’s not special. But it’s block, and it’s OSU. Buh-bye Operating System logo which looked like oSu’s pre-2000 baseball logo.

Most of the non-football unis look fine except for the logo with the outline sticking out like it’s an afterthought. It’s the same on the white helmet, which can get tossed now. The white and orange tops are good. I think I favor the whites. The black helmet and top have white separating the orange from the black. We had this discussion. Apparently Nike can’t let orange touch black. I can’t remember who it was, but someone called the white outlines on the orange numbers. Take away the white on the helmets and the jersey, and they can be sharp. But it looks goofy now.

Orange or white tops on black pants will work. Even white on white or white on orange might work well. But the black helmets look like they’ll only work on the all black unis. The white helmet won’t work anywhere. And the orange helmets are awesome (note: no white). I’m willing to the orange helmets had a white stripey in the middle until someone had a bout of sanity and thought they looked goofy. They amazingly used black and orange with negative space on one of the helmets. It’s too bad they won’t work with the black tops since all that white is on them.

    • The orange helmet should be their primary helmet, with the black used for black out ocassions and night games. The white helmets (because of the logo) should go in the waste bin.

  13. The unis are fine…cool, just like every other team that has updated recently.

The new rat, however, looks like the flat dead possum I drove by yesterday. I would love to have that on a piece of gear. Perfect for any occasion. JB

    • From the Nike website- logo will be phased out for athletics purposes, but will still exist in other parts of the university. doesn’t exactly fit with the idea to unify the school’s identity, but the whole athletic department will be unified.

      “Primary Identity – Beaver Logo

A refined Beaver logo will serve as the primary representation of the brand, and will be used as the main identifying device for Oregon State Athletics. The new mark is a contemporary evolution of the current Beaver mark, and supports the goal of respecting the past while representing the future. The use of the OS logo will remain part of the University’s overall program, but will be phased out by Athletics.”

  14. does the baseball team not play UP today at Joe Etzel? i was thinking about playing hookie and going, but it’s just such an awful day outside.

  15. It just occurred to me that this re-brand/logo/uniform effort was just like the past football season; an improvement, but execution and details lacking to make it special. The helmet stripes = Stanford, Texas losses, the logo might be UW or Oregon, not sure.

    Perfect.

Maybe that’s why the baseball team didn’t participate last evening.

  16. Hey…..seemed to me they could have done this the good ol OSU way and really fucked it up. But they didnt. No obvious sports bras, turquoise or helmet sphincters. We be SAaa-eved!

  17. In the “baseball is a funny game” dept, Elon hammers #12 NC State 24-12 and had 13 LOB. They scored 17 in the first 3 innings. Dirtbags had the winning run on with one out but lose to ucla, 3-2. Dirtbag reliever walked in the winning run when the bruins load the bases in the top of the 9th.

  18. Has anyone seen any examples of the tartan application? There had been talk about the endzones maybe have a hatched or waffle pattern similar to a beaver tail. I wonder if the tartan won’t show up in there somehow?

  19. Beaver Baseball ?@Beaver_Baseball
This season, yes. Nothing changes for Baseball in 2013 RT @dparra985: @Beaver_Baseball is baseball team still going to use “OS” logo?

  20. I guess I’m just not into the whole re-branding thing anymore. I think what we got was a ton better than what we had. But I wonder whatever happened to classic. Uni designs can change, But identity is uniform. And only time will make the new marks recognizable.

I have to ask, other than Benny being brown what’s wrong with what we once had?
    http://www.collegevault.com/Properties/Schools/Oregon-State.aspx

It’s pretty. It’s classic. I do like the updated Benny more http://newspaper.li/static/6baade2467348cdb542ecfc399add436.jpg except that it’s brown. How hard would it be to make a white cap on Benny and color him orange?

    • If only they were recruiting you Jack…..but they’re not. This whole thing was designed to get us some publicity and put our brand on the map for high school kids. If you just redo the classic look, it won’t make the news, it won’t make it onto twitter, it won’t make it onto facebook and there will be no #hashtags trending.
The Yahoo article from yesterday already has thousands of comments on it. Those hits wouldn’t have existed if we just made our logo back into something it used to be. I still like old school Benny and will mostly buy gear with him on it, and it’s not going away. But the new gear will help attract some new fans.

      • It’s been almost a generation since those marks were used. It would be new all over again.

I did this with my kids and their toys. I would just box up the stuff they stopped playing with and stuck it in the garage. They asked for it one day, and something else was ignored, relegating it to a box. But you’d think it was Christmas morning when I pulled out the forgotten toys.

It’s not science. It’s just kids.

        • were your kids 17-18 years old at the time? Did they send instagram photos of their “new” toys and send them to their friends? Did they have any idea that their were other toys available to choose from?

          • Are you asking if my kids will be smart enough when they’re 17-18 to know that the same old is in fact the same old?

            I sure hope so.

I would consider my time on this earth a failure if they didn’t know this. Putting it into effect is a different matter, but knowing it is important.

  21. I took a second look at the tartan, and I like it more. It’s not that having a tartan is cool or different. It’s that they did something never done in a tartan before by putting notches in the black bands.

Then again, I’ve always been partial to tartan shirts, especially wool ones. I have a ton of old Pendeltons I got from Goodwill for $5 a shot over time. I would buy a Pendelton made of the OSU tartan.

I might like them to also make it in the USA, but I know what that entails these days.

    • I saw Ed Ray in San Antonio wearing a Pendleton issued orange dominant tartan wool shirt; though I don’t know if it’s the new look.

      • I think there is a (more than one?) registered OSU tartan already. But I like this one because it takes the old and makes it new. I’ve never seen a tartan which deviates from pattern like this one. I’ve seen outrageous colors, designs within bands and even non-square tartans (does that make it a tartan anymore?). But I’ve never seen a notch or non-square deviation in a band.

It’s really really simple, but it’s almost revolutionary.

        • Oregon State had an official tartan when I was in school, but I didn’t see it very often. Hopefully they use this new one. I’d love to get a plaid Pendleton shirt in the new tartan.

  22. 1. anything would be an upgrade over all old logo, and we’ve survived that for 15 years so I can take anything.
    2. New logo is an upgrade, as most any logo would. But overall its a piece of trash. Thankfully it doesn’t seem to be a predominant thing with our overall look
    3. Tartan print in endzone would be the best
    4. Jerseys get a a-. Logo D+/
    5. Really like both orange football and basketball jerseys. The others are solid too.
    6. we’re back to being OSU hooray!
    7. I think we look better than we did last week and thats all you can ask for at this point

    • Which one?

Hasn’t he been to three schools already this season?

I hope he gets himself right. While I condone what caused him problems, I don’t really think an athlete needs to diminish his abilities with substances. Become a professional and use that stuff. Until then, abide by your team rules.

I knew in high school which kids would go out and party over the weekend. I would breeze through the conditioning parts of practice, and they would break a sweat 30 seconds in while huffing and puffing about it being unfair. I grew up and partied myself. But I never complained about the condition I created on my own when asked to work.

I think he’s a victim of himself first and the man second. So I don’t have any sympathy. While the man is wrong on this one, he was wrong first as an athlete who wanted to play at the next level.

  23. playing around a little with the NIKE website’s download of the new Beaver logo. tell me what you think. I’m a complete novice with graphic editing. The lettering needs to be cleaned up or given an outline, but what do you think of the head graphic?

    • Gives an idea of what it could look like on the black helmet without…also, could flip the black and orange and stick it on the orange helmets; black beaver, orange whiskers (stop chuckling you juveniles)…

    • Its the same….

You cant do away with the black outline on a white background or the teeth get lost.

…or is your suggestion, to change the black outline? It does look different when you cant see that outline (on a black surface). But what is the NIKE intent for black backgrounds? A white outline outside the black outline? The black outline is part of the design.

        • Two wrongs don’t make a right.

Beavblazer’s gravatar is what the logo should be. With the border, it’s Arena League at best. Without, it looks well done.

I’m thinking the best way to purchase gear for now is to get a black fitted cap with an embroidered logo. Then I’ll see if the outline can be cut away first. If not, I’ll just take a Sharpie to it and black it out.

I like the logo. I hate the outline.

          • I’ve found several online tshirt printing companies who will take any design you send the and print it on a shirt, all for around $25 w/shipping. it may not be legal, but if you keep it small scale i doubt anybody will notice. if Nike wants to start capitalizing on that design, theyll need to cater to the fans more. Ive done this before with that O state logo that used to be my avatar. It was really simple

          • I was thinking along the same wavelength last night. Wanted to somehow incorporate the block O as the outline for the new logo. (Give the Beaver a big O…lol)
It’s difficult though because the space inside the O is more narrow than wide, so the new logo doesn’t fill up that space very well. The result is either a really large “O” outlining your design, or a really small beaver inside it. Maybe if you leave off the inner circle of the “O”?

While working on this I got to wondering, is Reser stadium (in it’s future finalized Phase III configuration) supposed to be in the shape of that “O”. It sort of has that same shape from above. Are the Beavs trying to mimic what Oregon has done with their O and Autzen?(except in the opposite order of events)

That long sleeved shirt you linked has been on my wishlist all year, but I just can’t justify spending $45-$55 for it. It’s a freaking shirt….

          • I see what you’re saying with Reser. But the wings on the east side bend inward, so it’s not a true square like the block O. Nice idea though. I wish they would have thought a little more in those terms when the track facility was built. Google maps would show a nice satellite block O there if they had thought about it.

And the logo inside the O would have to be either small to fit inside, or it can just overlap the O… I’m thinking either dead center or on the bottom right corner. A small black line where it overlaps should give it the same effect. I don’t know. I think I’d have to see what it looks like if it melted into the O instead of breaking it with that line.

          • What I was thinking, was like the old school duck “O” with “Donald Duck” coming out of the “O”, but in this case, it being the new “Beaver” logo coming out of the Block “O”. This will show that the beaver head logo is actually in “motion”. Wich apparently is supposed to be what is going on with the logo.

My uncle who helped design the Beaver head logo said that not many will like it when it gets released, but it’s what the university decided upon anyways. They were presented with 2 other options…I’m curious as to what those other 2 options were and if the University chose the right one.

  24. I go osubeavers.com, click on the the new gear tab and what do I see? The interlocking OS, the old beaver logo, and our new logo scattered about. The 2013 Championship wrestling t-shirt has the OS, there are deck chairs with the old lettering and beaver logo, and every baseball item with the old logo and lettering. Simplify? Not yet. Unify? Not yet. Amplify? Sure. Whatever your opinions are of the rebranding, I think we can all agree that it has to be in with the new and out with the old. To have a huge unveiling of the new stuff yet still have the website prominently featuring the old does not make a lick of sense to me.

I wasn’t a huge fan of the rebranding but I like it better than the old stuff and I think it will continue to grow on me. I am also holding out opinion on the uniforms until I see them on the field during games and what they look like on t.v. because that ultimately will be how most people see them.

    • They’ve gotta sell out of the old stuff first. I don’t think they planned on the unveiling happening this early in the year, but the leaked logo forced them to reveal it ahead of schedule. I’ve read there will be a more wide variety of merchandise available in April, but right now it’s just limited to mostly t-shirts. Also, Nike has exclusive rights to the new logo merchandise for 2 years. All other manufacturers (Adidas, Columbia, etc.) will have to sell a version of our old logo’s/lettering, so you won’t see that flushed out of the stores for another couple years.

    • I heard an interview with the Nike dude from the reveal(Van Horn?) and he said they are still working on the Baseball gear. Also saw a tweet that Casey’s team will continue with the old gear this season. really.

Monday’s announcement was forced on the parties involved due to the ‘leaks.’ The actual announcement was supposed to be 4+ weeks out and the first teams wearing gear were supposed to start in the fall.

Given all that, I’m not surprised that everything isn’t in full blown new logo mode. Given how slow OSU is on most issues, they have actually impressed me with some things recently, including how much web space HAS been updated.

  25. Black helmet facemask got milk? Black helmet stripe looks like skid marks on a pair of tighty whiteys. White helmet stripe is a plotcher. Orange helmet, now this is good.

  26. Black helmet is boring…BORING. Needs something added. Love the white helmet with new logo (agree that it looks like a hockey logo) and really love the orange helmet except for the number on the side. Come on, drop the friggin number on the helmet retro is not cool.
Over all I give the make over a B minus. Fix the black and orange helmets and I’ll up the grade to B+. Thought ASU had a better exciting makeover. Disapointed overall.

    • I’m thinking you’re joking. Everything you write is just about the opposite of truth (except that the logo with the outline looks like a hockey logo).

I’ve been writing for years that a number on the helmet would be cool, yes retro, but also cool. I feel somewhat vindicated for that since the numbered helmet was something the players were begging for the most. Apparently they think it’s cool too.

And plain black helmets are awesome. Maybe one with an orange stripe is fine. Too bad we have to have half the helmet not black, it makes it look like a tootsie roll pop. But no logo is still awesome.

And even the wedge slapped on the white helmet is better than the poop smear with a caption we had for 15 years. So even that’s a win, albeit a gimme.

  27. Maybe Angry can get together another petition to address the logo. I think without the outline it looks miles ahead and I won’t think I am watching the Phoenix Cardinals. I think all the changes look good except the two tone black/white and the logo. Start a petition to erase the outline.

  28. So…

Is there anything exciting happening this week?

I sort of expect the hoops team to win tonight, so I may be disappointed by the end of the day for once. I certainly don’t expect them to win at CU. I would be nervous for a game at Boulder were we at full strength and ranked in the top 20. So my expectations are for a split this weekend.

I do expect the baseball team to win every tilt this weekend. I know it’s baseball, and losses just happen every once in a while. But this team is coming into its own early. I’m really happy to see Davis is who I thought he’d be last year and really protecting Conforto. I like Peterson at the lead-off spot also. The kid has a knack for getting on when he’s up early in an inning.

Gordon has been slow to come around, so I’m thinking Hendrix should get extended time in CF with Conforto and Davis in LF and RF. Maybe Clark, Jansen or Matthews get that look, but I think Hendrix is a gamer, and I think he was a hometown sleeper in terms of recruiting. And as much as I love Davis at the plate, I really like having that arm in RF.

It’s too bad our best CF prospects are always grabbed early in the draft. Hopefully Casey finally gets someone who pulls a Conforto/Davis with MLB scouts and just tells them there’s no way they go pro no matter how high they’re rated.

I also love that Keyes has found his glove. He’s still slow to come around at the plate. But he’s made some really nice plays on the corner. And with a middle of Smith and Peterson and Hayes at 1B and Jake the gun behind the plate… this looks like one more than solid team.

    • Yes, Hendrix is a gamer. Last summer, Jeff Hendrix played on the Corvallis American Legion team with my son. Having watched Jeff play in 50 games last summer, and having spent quite a bit of time with Jeff and his family, I can testify that Jeff is the real deal in terms of character (integrity, heart, competitiveness, values) and raw athletic talent (speed, arm strength, coordination). With proper training (which I assume Jeff is getting at OSU), Jeff should improve a lot as a baseball player over the next several years. And, really, you will never meet a nicer kid.

      • Good info, as always, silver. Hope you are building up some comp days at work so that you’ll be able to give several practice reports on FB come spring (and fall). Thanks.

        • Hoping and planning to attend some spring and fall FB practices.

Meanwhile, here’s a little more on Jeff Hendrix.

Last summer in American Legion, Jeff’s biggest problem was hitting curveballs from lefthanders (Jeff is a LH batter). Of course, Jeff is not the only LH hitter with that weakness, but it was pretty glaring, leading to a lot of strikeouts. I’m guessing OSU has worked hard with Jeff to fix that.

The good news is that Jeff has natural pop in his bat — the kind of thing you can’t really teach. Although Jeff is only 5’11” and 180 lbs, he hit quite a few homers and long line drives last summer. And when Jeff hits one in the gap, he has the speed to turn it into extra bases most of the time — Jeff can really fly around the bases (and can cover a lot of ground in center field).

    • Jake “the gun”…..I like it!
As for Keyes, at .281 with an OBP of .344, he seems to be on the edge of returning to his form of the year before last. I really thought he was gonna break out about 4 games ago. Easy to cheer this kid on, he always seems to keep his head in the game.

As to the question, “…anything exciting…this week?” Coach Rueck’s gals could make some noise in the PAC12 tourney.

  29. Anyone have a projected line-up for tomorrow? This is what I expect.

    Peterson
    Smith
    Conforto
    Davis
    Jake
    Keyes
    Danny
    CF
    DH

    Does 5-7 matter?

    • That is the best part of this team’s offensive lineup, we look to have 7-8 solid options for 4 positions (1B, 3B, CF & DH). There are no easy outs 1-9.

    • Lineup likely will be:

      Max Gordon
      Tyler Smith
      Michael Conforto
      Dylan Davis
      Gabe Clark
      Danny Hayes
      Kavin Keyes
      Jake Rodriguez
      Andy Peterson

      • Gordon at lead-off worries me. I understand keeping him in for his glove and hoping he comes out of his slump. But he’s not the kind of stick you would expect to lay down a first pitch bunt for a hit, a common tool to break a slump for a batter like him. Every time I look up at my stream, I see #14 leading off an inning by getting on base. He’ll get a hit or a walk, or he’ll get plunked and just trot to first like he belongs there. And I don’t see a weakness for his approach yet. So it’s going to take some time before anyone figures him out.

Question: Can someone give me odds on Casper getting his one hit per week in this homestand? I know that’s a little mean, but how does a slump and a sieve get you on the field in anything but garbage time… if such a thing really exists in baseball.

        • Anyone know when Barnes will be back?

I like Peterson at the top of the lineup. I think Gordon is going to find himself sitting unless he picks it up real soon.

When pac 12 play starts, I think we’ll see something like this.

          Peterson 2b
          Smith SS
          Conforto LF
          Hayes 1B
          Davis RF/DH
          Rodriguez C
          Keyes 3b
          Barnes CF
          Gordon, Casper, Jansen Matthews DH/RF

This is a pretty strong lineup. Should be provide more than enough offense for picthing since it’s obviously unlikely they keep the ERA under 3 for the season.

The only thing I see that worries me a bit is the high pitch count the starters are getting early in the season. They get 6 days of rest vs 4 in the pros but anytime your over 100, it takes its toll on the arm no matter how long of a rest there is.

  30. Absolutely pathetic showing from the Beavs basketball team tonight. I’m embarrased to say I’m watching this shit. CR should be ashamed that this team has regressed over the course of the year.

  31. If we lose at Colorado on Saturday and WSU beats USC, we can wrap up an undisputed last place finish in basketball. This after 5 seasons of CR bringing in his own players.
But I think that the regular season has just been a ruse to lull the rest of the conference to sleep and the Beavs will win the Pac-12 tourney and a birth in the NCAA Dance with a losing record. This could be history making for the Beavs as we could be the first team to do this!

  32. pollyanna here: That was the worst effort of the season…I told the wife that’s the first time I’ve seen them give up.

    • I will say that the refs sucked eggs. I think we get the scrubs. We got maybe two calls all game long. If this were the NBA, #43 and Loveridge would both be fined for excessive flops upon review… multiple times for both.

But what really bothered me was that Loveridge would grab players and not flop, then pull them out of the play and get the call his way.

That takes a rare breed of shitty refereeing.

Barton got called for a phantom foul when #5 cut then flopped, untouched, at the foul line. Burton got called for one late when he was vertical and after he was smacked in the head by Olsen.

I might get my teams in trouble if I were the coach. There have been about four games this year which were just horribly (and I mean beyond bad Pac ref standards here) officiated. The tape on OSU is to cheat. Nikegon did it. Utah did it. I fully expect CU to do it.

What are you going to lose?

When the Woods foul last week or the Olsen foul tonight occur and nothing is done, I think I would instruct my team to perform a sit-in until an actual review and correct call is made.

It wouldn’t be a forfeit. It would just be what the refs want to call it… a refusal to do their job.

      • Jack, that’s all well and good, but here’s the question…why don’t the Beavs get any calls? In otherwords, what has CR done to piss off the officials and can the “relationships” be repaired? The team is not very good (especially on defense), but they should be getting a fair shake, last night I saw looks of bewilderment on Nelson and Moreland’s faces as they were knocked around. CR may have to move on if he’s the reason the team gets zero respect out on the floor.

        • Collier and Barton got called for mysterious fouls as well. They all just looked like they had no idea what sport the refs were calling.

Is it a coach thing when the refs are tilted? That might be worth investigating. But I think it’s just hard to find good officials to call all the 400 or so D1 games every week, and the bottom-dwellers in each conference at the end of the season just get the dregs of the league’s officiating crews. The officiating was good in Boulder last night, and the other team from Oregon was just as bad (worse actually) in effort. They gave up ten minutes in.

          • Yeah, I don’t know if it is really a coach thing, but CR has a loud voice and maybe the attitude among the officials is that he is showing them up on a regular basis. And I’m not saying the Beavs even win any of these games, but if it’s shitty officiating it should be on both sides.

The avalanche of traveling calls against the Beavs in the Duck game still piss me off and last night the Utes were mugging the Beavs as if they knew they would not get called on it. I’m tired off Moreland getting body checked on a rebound, he loses the ball and there is no call. Then the other team hits a three.

It’s all most like the officials have the mindset that because the Beavs aren’t a very good team, or maybe not a well coached team, they don’t deserve to get the benefit of the doubt.

  33. Well, if CR needs to go, a season like this will move that along. Seems clear he is not developing as an in-game coach or teacher or motivator….

  34. I think John Calipari needs to be fired.

I mean… he has a top five recruiting class for years on end, and he can’t even make the tourney?

I think this warrants a petition. Then we can all go whine about it on various message boards.

    ;)

  35. I have giving up, dropped the OSU basketball Hoops feed on twitter (was never following Coach Robinson). Far cry from last Summer when we talked about booking a trip to Vegas for the conference tourney. Sure glad we didn’t do that.

    Thank God, for Baseball!!

  36. from today’s Salt Lake Tribune: This was an old-fashioned whipping of OSU, a win that drove the Beavers into submission. By the middle of the second half, Oregon State’s Craig Robinson was finished coaching, sitting motionless on the bench other than hastily waving a sub into the game.

I didn’t see the game but assuming the refereeing was as awful as Jack says it was, it’s little wonder they all gave up. I also don’t understand whatever happened after almost every halftime break – usually with a lead and then collapse.

This is so sad – one wonders where it all went wrong. Women’s basketball wasn’t very good either.

At least there will now be a practice facility but who’s coming?

    • The reffing was terrible, but this team has faced as bad or worse over the last couple months and still didn’t give up. I don’t condone mailing it in for one game. You can only imagine how I felt for the duration of the 2010 football season. This one game was as bad as many of those games in terms of effort and frustration.

      • Saw a show where they were talking to one of the Pro Bowl corners. They asked him who he thought the best corner in the league was not including himself or Revis, and his answer was Kennan Lewis.

  37. Beavs were getting hammered the entire game-WTF with refs? This ain’t the NBA.

There has been some brilliant passing this year–frustrating to see our front line dribbling heads-down into a wild shot or turnover.

I feel bad for Collier – his injuries must screwed him up mentally. All his point blank shots are a bent elbow double clutch.

However, Moreland is a BEAST on the boards-I laugh at some of his rebounds and rejections.

    • I didn’t know about Collier’s injuries. What and when? I wondered why he didn’t seem to be getting much playing time.

      • He’s taken some hard spills the last couple of years. I believe even a couple of minor knee dislocations. He does not seem to have the any vertical explosiveness or the quick first step anymore. I really thought he would be a dominate P-12 forward by this point in his career. Injuries aside, I think he can be faulted for still not developing a reliable 12-15 foot jumper (which other teams seem to be giving him). He took one against Utah that looked ugly on release. Lastly, I’m not sure he really bought into being a sixth man. It would be nice to see a big comeback his senior season.
