  1. The “3’s” bit the Beavs today; only 3 BB’s and 3 errors committed. BB’s not typical of the season so far, sadly the 3 E’s not so unusual…..so far.

Hamilton and Morrison combine for 5 of the Beavs 7 hits!

Oh well, WBB streams tonight at 7. Go gals! Go Hammer!

    • Meanwhile, Fitt tweeted at 4pm, “I spoke with Kevin Lennon of the NCAA a few minutes ago; he said the NCAA did not receive Wetzler’s reinstatement request until last week.”

Didn’t receive request till last week?

The OSU response linked above seemed spot on and classy to me; the cleaner writes a good piece; that it comes over the signature of Clark and BDC shows the professionalism that comes with the big bucks.

  2. Why does Oregon State even have to ask for reinstatement? That is absolutely crazy. Does the NCAA have an obligation to settle the matter fairly in a timely manner? This is not 17th century Europe ruled by a king and queen where you must bow down and ask for permission to exist in the presence of royalty. I have never been to court. But if one of us peasants does not take these thieves to court, then we will repeat this groundhog story again and again. Please do not settle out of court with the NCAA.

    • Kinda what I was getting at over on O-live:

So, OSU receives inquiries in late fall from NCAA officials regarding dealings between Ben Wetzler and a financial adviser, and yet, doesn’t request reinstatement till last week. Question is, when did the NCAA go from “inquiring” to ruling Ben ineligible and thus creating a need to request reinstatement? How long can the NCAA “inquire” without actually making a decision….knowing that Casey would risk forfeiting any games involving Ben in the meantime?

  3. OSU not gonna go quietly, can’t be BDC, must be “The Cleaner”.

Steve Clark says @GoBeavers2014 will appeal @benwetzler28 penalty to NCAA, which will re-hear case “probably Wednesday or Thursday”…per Eggers

  4. PAC 12 0, B1G 3. Not a great beginning in the challenge. Wetzler being out means Schultz has to face a very good hitting team in Indiana on Sunday.

  5. Today’s lineup change features Morrison and Hamilton as one-two, together they collected 5 of the Beavs 7 hits yesterday. Peterson hitting 9th, Casey really disappointed in his performance yesterday.

EDIT: and…striking out to end the 2nd won’t help Andy’s stock, Beavs now down 4-2 going to t3

  6. Fry has only been ahead of the count about 4 of the 20-21 batters faced, no one up in the pen.

EDIT: Fry escapes on a foul out to Conforto and a highlight reel throw from Rulli. Not the inning Beavs needed. Fry not sharp at all and yet no one up in the pen Can’t worry about Fry’s mental state, get someone up!

  7. Beavs hoops falling apart for the time being against the Fuskies…down 7 now late in the first half. Did anybody catch CR’s last press conference where he was talking about the importance of this game and his Beavs being relevant this late in the season?

Since when is fighting for a NIT berth have anything to do with relevancy? I know it’s improbable, but it makes me think BDC grew a pair and gave CR a “NIT or bust” ultimatum or more likely CR is just delusional again.

  8. I checked in o basketball a few minutes ago and I think the Beavs were up 9. That was with about 10 minutes to go in half. Just checked again and with 2:35 left Huskies lead by 7.

  9. Beavs down 9 in hoops, being outrebounded by about 10 boards and the Huskies are shooting over 50%, so much for “relevancy”. Will be waiting breathlessly for CR’s halftime adjustments.

  10. Funny, Nelson gets fouled on a 3 as time expires but doesnt hear whistle so he keepa running to The locker room. Has to come back from the tunnel to get his foul shots, but then replay sjows it came after the buzzer so he has to go back to the locker room. Thanks for playing!

  11. Max E relieves Flemer with two on and one out. Slow roller to Morrison and he boots the DP ball and the sacks are juiced with one out.

  12. Angry’s favorite guy Casper is up next with 1 out and 2 on. Beavs trail 1 run in bottom of 8th. Spartans changing pitcher for Casper. Big at bat here.

    • No bail out. Casey is doing situational tests of his guys for future games. Small ball equals big brain. Swing away equals small brain with no consideration of future events and games.

  13. Suckfest is over for the day. At least baseball has a chance to get over this quickly. CR should be going into psycho babble mode shortly to explain his debacle.

  14. Phillies on Wetzler: “The Phillies did participate in the NCAA investigation and a ruling has been issued. We believe it is inappropriate to comment further on either the negotiation with the player or the action taken by the NCAA.”

Translation: baseball world performs bukakke on the Phillies.

Actually, they will probably be fine because nobody has a spine. They sell their souls for Federal Reserve debt notes.

  15. Now two games under .500 in conference and two games over .500 overall. I am so ready to see these seniors finish this season, and get the hell out of Corvallis. CR wants to talk about the enormity of the situation? What exactly was enormous? #8 vs #9 is hardly enormous. This was a god damn must win game for these a-holes and this is how they play?!?! Holy sh_t!!!!!

  16. I fucking well give the fuck up. (Let’s be clear: File under “Men’s Hoops”) While I’m opining on the state of the men’s basketball program, let me add: Fuck all!

If this was a horse, I’d shoot it it – and I’m not sure we can even salvage some French cuisine from the carcass.

First pitch at home at 5:35 on Friday. Things are looking up in Corn Valley for spring, soon to be upon us…

    • I think they should go after a big name, bdc needs to make a few calls to Calipari, Izzo, coach K at Duke, and Ken Bone. Maybe we can find out if one of them has a brother. Next, he needs to call every politician and cabinet member, and everyone in congress and see if they have a brother that coaches basketball. Next, he needs to call Chevy Chase, Leonardo DiCaprio, and the entire cast of Seinfeld, Friends, and Desperate Housewives and see if any of them have a brother that likes basketball. Then, move to Canada and Mexico and look closely at the relatives of their government officials and famous people. We need to keep the spotlight burning on Corvallis as long as we can. If ESPN won’t broadcast all of our games, we need to push our brand on to other network like C-Span, CNBC, CNN, and OPB. Next we need to call the crew of extreme home make over, and have them come in and do a “arena edition” show and let them put some lipstick on Gill. Next, we need to have Obama start talking less about health care and debt ceilings, and more about OSU. Once we took on Robinson, I figured we would be getting more shout outs during the speeches at the Whitehouse, but it doesn’t look like bdc is holding anyone accountable. And unless baseball starts to turn around, we may need to go a similar route to replace Casey.

      • What I don’t understand is that you have a handle most of us would disagree with not because you think is insulting to Beavs fans, but because you have zero clue about Kristick in the first place. The guy was a cheap shot. We wish he would have whiffed more.

I’m going to go to educk and make a name for myself with a monicker like “Mariota sits down again.” That should make them think about things for a while.

Ha!… Nm… I would be banned because they’re stupid cowards incapable of thinking. But the handle is comparable.

      • And I hope you weren’t being paid for the five hours it took to type this weird attempt at a… not rant… not humor… not sanity… um… thing?… I guess ting is correct.

  17. A timely loss to keep the dream of CBI glory intact for another week!

I’m wondering…does the CBI issue a championship trophy or just a paper certificate and participation ribbons for each player? JB

        • Jack,

You are joking right? You know that I graduated in 1922 Back then OSU was called Oregon Agricultural College. In my day we were not very good at basketball and had four different coaches in four seasons! Luckily better years followed.

          LP

          • Ha! Made you google Linus Pauling…. You’re funny boner.

I would have bet money on you arguing that Nikegon’s “NCAA Tournament” championship was in any way affiliated wit the NCAA first. But you went with that which was wrong first.

Maybe you’re not as banal as you present yourself to be.

  18. I’m not a big combine guy, but sounds like Cooks is killing it. Tied for fastest 40 at 4.3 and making great catches. Also had 16 bench reps

  19. Casey juggles the lineup again, that’s what spring is for I suppose.
No Hendrix today, hammy? Keyes hitting in 5th behind Conforto and Davis. Peterson leading off, haven’t seen his skill at bunting much so far.
As a reliever, Schultz picked up K’s pretty often, not so much last time out; I’m looking for better stats there today.

    WBB at 2 today.

  20. Going to t4, Schultz has 3 K’s and Peterson a bunt single. Lots of solid contact by Indiana.
Indiana played 15 innings late last night.
    0-0

  21. Peterson is struggling all the way around. Casey seems to trust him to move him back to the 1 spot after Morrison looked good yesterday

  22. Beavers score 2 to take a 2-1 lead after 4 but leaving runs out there. Had runners on 2nd and third with 1 out after taking the lead and didn’t push any more runs across

    • Keyes is more of a 2 or 3 hitter than a 5. I’d like Hendrix, Keyes, Davis, Conforto. I’m not sure who the 5 would be yet–need to see more of the new guys and on TV. But that’s the best use of each player.

        • I like Davis ahead of Conforto. I’ve mentioned here a lot that I used to compete in National competitive simulation/stat leagues. Davis puts up the quintessential #3 hitter stats. Conforto is such a good hitter that I don’t believe he needs protection, though I think some of the new guys will step up soon and be able to fill that roll. I’m not against Conforto followed by Davis, but only if nobody steps up to claim the 5 hole. I think we will know more once we see these guys on TV. I really don’t like Keyes #5, though….he needs to be in one of the top 3 slots. If we can find a #2 hitter, Keyes could slide to 3, then bat Conforto-Davis 4 and 5.

      • keep in mind folks that Casey likes to tinker with the lineup in these non-conference games to find out who he can count on when Pac-12 play rolls around. Just my 2 pesos

  23. ICYMI: Beav gals whip Huskies by 20! That’s 7 straight double digit wins for Rueck’s crew.

And this from Kendall Rogers, “Pat Casey: “I told Ben that they can try all they want, but they can’t hold you down. At the end of day, you’re still Ben Wetzler.””

  24. Cooks moved himself into the first round today. Excellent workout all around. Faster than anyone really expected . Not sure if he’ll even need to work out on pro day. Probably just individual workout with teams now. Hopefully he doesn’t land on a really crappy team.

    • Crappy teams throw a lot so it wouldn’t be a big deal. Plus the NFL is cyclical and easy for crappy teams to become good. I wouldn’t worry about it. I hope he goes to NE, though. Brady would make him a star very fast. I could see Bill B falling in love with Cooks due to work ethic.

      • Wow! I never thought he would do that. :/

Next you’ll be telling me that QBs like Manziel and Mariota aren’t suited for the NFL.

Oh how I will just start eating crow when that happens.

  25. More on Cooks. “Oregon State WR Brandin Cooks’ time in the 60-yard shuttle (10.72) is the fastest time ever in http://NFL.com combine database.” as tweeted by Kyle Bonagura of ESPN.

Also, apparently USA Today captioned Cooks picture with the note that he played for the Oregon Ducks !!! per tweet from Aaron Fentress

  26. 2 scoreless innings for Jake Thompson today against UW so far. He’s allowed just 6 baserunners in 9 innings this season, 3 hits and no runs

  27. Ice keeps coming on with RISP, doesn’t always come through but often enough to be a factor. Five RBI’s to start the day, now totals 7. His D has been OK too.
    2-1 good guys!

  28. Logan Ice with a two run double and Billy King with an RBI single. Young players have been impressive at the dish this season. 3-1 Beavers after 4

  29. I just have to say we are a very very very weak critical site compared to what I saw on the East Coast. What sets off self-righteous pollyana here would be considered pollyanna-speak out there.

I don’t get West Coast fans sometimes.

  30. Hoo boy. Please tell us how objective Bostonians, New Yorkers or Filadelphians are. If you talk to a transplant from anywhere on earth, perhaps they are objective. Otherwise not so much. Jack, you must have ignored the Filly fans defending Amaro. There were lots of them dropping bombs on Wetzler based on nothing more than geography and regionalism. Early on, Coach Rob has gotten much scorn that he did not deserve. However, when you come on board a place with thin credentials, others will assume you got there thru connections and are protected by connections rather than merit. Rob does not seem like a guy flaunting his family. But why does he not think about defense or ball movement on offense?

    • I really don’t care how Rob got to OSU. Care a lot more about his performance. It’s especially bad since he has such political connections and celebrity.

        • And I’ll take it a step further.

Coach Rob didn’t have the same luxury Rueck had in starting over. He was given a mandate to shepherd the remaining team in place. That meant he had to deal with everything Asshat John left ingrained in the program, including the lack of talent taking up ships. Rueck got to make his own team from scratch. That’s what most coaches do anyway. But he didn’t have to do all the politicking required to make it seem like so-and-so+ were all leaving because it was their idea.

I challenge anyone here and in the hoops world to go get elite players when you’re limited on offers and you have to tell them some of the guys who remained would still be on the team. You have to pull a lot of covers off the bed before you can make it.

Coach Rob has finally made his.

There is a ton of talent on this team. They are young and in need of direction. I don’t know if he can do this. But he sure as shit has brought this program out of the dark ages. And if he leaves this year he’s just one GP short of leaving it better than anyone has left it in my lifetime.

That being said, I want them to win now. And it sucks that they don’t. But I’m not going to blame my stupid beliefs that darkie shouldn’t be in the White House… especially when he was born in Kenya… because his birth certificate as presented by those who would say so say that he was born in a city which wasn’t a part of a country which was not yet named for the patriarch who freed it after darkie was born.

The fucking birthers are stupid racist fucks. And anyone who gave them the time of day are worse.

  31. So then you do care about how he got to OSU and are only semi interested in performance. You, we all throw crap into the equation that has nothing to do with performance. We all want a big name and lots of stars, so we can claim to be part of the noise. We all prefer fluff rather than substance. We just prefer our fluff and not the other guys fluff. We want succes now. If our guys, lie, cheat, and steal…well as long as they win now, and do not get too much blow back, then it’s all good.

    • Speak for yourself. I prefer substance over fluff.

I want efficiency, intelligence, discipline, etc. I don’t advocate cheating. I do make jokes that we have the only coach (Riley) unwilling to do it, and that is luck o’ the Beavs. But that’s a joke. I would take a Coach Peterson BSU team in a heartbeat. Wish OSU could put together something like BSU in their prime but with Pac-12 talent.

  32. OT but this is a cool read if you have the time or interest:
    http://grantland.com/features/nba-dleague-rgv-vipers-houston-rockets-future-of-basketball/

Looking at where this Nevada Smith guy came from and what his philosophies are, he seems a lot like a basketball version of Chip Kelly or maybe Mike Leach. Maybe his style can’t work but at the very least he would fill the seats with some exciting basketball. Could be a cool under the radar/bargain hire whenever Robinson leaves.

      • It was fun when Gill was full. Avg attendance in 14 home games this year, 4,011 away games 9,212. No better stat to express the state of MBB.

        • There are other factors as well. But the general malaise of our fans contributes the most.
          http://seattletimes.com/html/sports/2022886679_withers12xml.html

Some personal observations on some of those numbers:

The numbers at ASU and UW are just bad. There is no excuse for them to not put butts in seats except for the fair-weather motives we’re talking about.

The disparity between SU and Cal isn’t really the product on the floor (which can’t be said for football). It’s the fan attitude toward sports in general. If the product is equal at both places in any sport, this is about the right percentage for attendance at either school.

USC’s and Nikegon’s numbers reflect about a 25% overage on turnstyle counts due to season ticket tie-ins to new construction and gifting and all that. UCLA and SU had some of the same incentives, but they structured their new construction so as to not displace students and die-hards (that’s all there is at SU anyway).

There is nothing to do in Tucson besides go to the movies during the day and go to a hoops game at night… or just get drunk. It is an ugly, overgrown burg in a desolate hell hole where nobody should live. The crowd at McKale is worse than the crowd at Reser who yells at you to sit down. It’s one big student section and ten thousand crotchety blue-hairs gettin’ their golf clap on. Ironically, that demographic may change once the highly corrupt and huge waste of money that is the F35 rolls off production lines. If they send the A10 to the boneyard, DM dries up and closes, leaving Tucson with a huge retiree/snowbird population now dependent on base services looking for somewhere else to live. And that wouldn’t be a bad thing for them despite what I’m sure will be some future whining from them might say about it.

Utah is the same way as UA, but there’s just nothing to do in SLC during winter. At least it’s a somewhat decent place to live… so long as you submit to the culture.

CU is really the only outlier here. They have good program support while the town and people are diverse in activity and demographics.

          • Thanks for the link Jack. Nike U isn’t going to pay off bonds with those kind of numbers. I wonder if Killwrestling has cashed in on his property deal.

    • I’ve had people tell me “God told me to ______”, but they’ve never really been able to describe the experience very well. They’ve just been general, like “oh, I just know”. I’m curious how it’s different than intuition.

      • god told me to thumb this post down. But I’m not listening to him now. Especially after god told me to masturbate last night. Now I can’t go in to that Piggly Wiggly anymore

    • Now the whole country will know what a first class asshole he is. A pig coaching the Razorbacks.
How appropriate. Even the Wisconsin fans did not like him, they tolerated him because he won.

  33. Rashaad Reynolds with a decent combine. Did nothing to help or hurt his draft stock.

All three guys backed up what their tape says so that’s a win for them.

    My predictions now –
    Cooks – First round
Chrichton – Mid 2nd round. And also nice to hear that he declared early so he could help his family. That is going to help him a lot in sticking in the league.
    Reynolds – 6th or 7th round pick.

Only other player I could see teams taking a flyer on is Phillip. He’s got the size to play but it would have to be at guard. Likely a practice squad player at best.

  34. Really great article… lots of interesting information on many topics!

    One thing to note:

“Langsdorf wound up calling plays for the Beavers’ final two games of last season, including the Hawaii Bowl victory over Boise State. Riley isn’t sure who will call plays next season.”

What do you guys think of that? Our offense actually looked pretty solid in those two games… We could actually run the ball.

Maybe losing Langs isn’t so great if he possibly grew as a play caller over the year he was removed from it.

Luck o’ the Beavs? Lose the OC that had been terrible right when he learned to be decent? O_O

    http://www.pamplinmedia.com/pt/12-sports/212177-70628-inside-oregon-state-beavers-football

    • I question whether Langs called plays or Riley was just managing a positive transition for him. And even if he was, that alone would not explain the difference in the run game; the blocking had been missing all season.

Dissappointing to see Garret has never called plays before. Sounds like he’s essentially going to be a QB coach/”offensive quality control” coach. Saying he gets to critically analyze what OSU does, and suggest changes – but not too much because Sean’s a senior qb – leads me to believe we won’t see anything significant from him. I’d like to see more slants, some shovel passes, multi-TE running sets…more opportunities for what should be a fully recovered Tyler Anderson….

      • I tend to believe that we won’t see any changes but theoretically Garrett can offer some nice changes. He can implement slants, shovel passes, multi-TE sets, etc provided the language of the offensive system allows for it. It sounded like Riley was mostly tied to the language and major passing concepts. Riley has always been recognized for his offensive passing concepts. He will be tied to those same plays/packages but it doesn’t mean that they can’t be tweaked or a handful of new plays couldn’t be added (provided the language allows it). It be troubling to me (and probably many NFL scouts) if Mannion couldn’t handle changes to the playbook.

        • Theoretically is about as finr as you can get when talking about Garrett. He has a lot of Oline and RB talent to deal with now. Let’s see how he might utilize them.

    • I always thought that Langsdorf called the plays and Riley overruled him at times since it’s hard to remember seeing Riley hold a play card.

After seeing all the interviews, I think Garrett will make a positive impact. It definitely seems like he’s going to try to parlay this job into something bigger.

      • Yeah. I like a lot of what’s being said/Riley is saying most of the right things. Especially liked him acknowledging the inbreeding and getting away from it for some fresh perspective.

      • Do you remember any time in the last three years Riley has held a play card/chart/whatever? There were people watching him intently these past couple seasons who would say he was detached from the offense for most of the time… to the point where he was just looking around at various stuff all by is lonesome while games were going on. I find it hard to believe he was calling anything for the last couple years based on what I and others have seen.

Maybe he has some magical play-calling system where he just stands there and looks at the scoreboard and Mannion reads the play-call off the angle at which he stands? That would work. The same could be said about the defense while Riley and Banker were standing away from the team and coaches while the play went on, and they were just giggling with each other about whatever while the game went on.

  35. Looks like LJ Moore is leaving the Sooners. Weren’t the Beavs his #2 option a year ago? Wonder if he could be transferring to the west coast? I think he’s from Fresno.

  36. Eggers visits w/Casey: http://www.pamplinmedia.com/pt/12-sports/212179-70641-osus-pat-casey-we-feel-like-were-going-to-get-better

Re: Keyes performance, Casey says, “It’s good to see, … When ‘Kav’ is juiced up and excited, he’s a pretty good player. It’s been inspiring to see him get after it like that.” Sounds like Keyes hasn’t always been as focused as Casey would like. He sure wasn’t the last time the Beavs played at Goss, admiring a deep fly when he should have been running the bases. The senior seems to have his head right now, hopefully that lasts all year!
