A friend of mine was in the Seahawks locker room before game, halftime, aftergame and on sidelines for several games last year. He told me that Wilson is about 5’10, Earl Thomas about 5’9″ and Golden Tate even smaller, I guess they cannot play. My friend and I watched the State/National jc championsip together and saw Beav recruit Teshon Broughton play well. The best player on the field was a freshman 5’10” qb (qualifier but no stars at he time), now on the roster of Boise. No size, no stars, no good? Kyle Haley was a qualifier and was all league jc as a freshman in arguably the toughest conference in America. No size, no stars, no good? Thank God for UConn. They had more size and more starred players than Kentucky. Otherwise they would have lost.

I said “so far”, meaning he could get stars eventually. They usually don’t look at the JC guys until later. I think Texas AM had interest in him.

Loved Russell Wilson since he was a freshman at NC State. I don’t know what the point of your post is, but I never hate on a guy just for lack of size.

Not sure what height has to do with 2pm, but oh well.

Haley was all California Region IV first team defense. Also on that first team were 24 other players, including seven other LBs. in the final assessment, he was one of the best 40 or 50 LBs in the Cali JUCO ranks?

      Yay!

Not all were freshmen and not all are instant qualifiers in your statistical basket Jack. That is the point about Bray spotting a trend early and jumping on it. I like big, fast guys as much as anyone. But some guys here automatically discount prospects due to size, jc heritage or amount of hype. They review the player films having been prejudiced by hype, heritage or branding. These guys would have OS repeat the Kellen Moore mistake. Angry is right to ask the question as to why commit to Haley so soon with other options? We need to dig a bit to figure out what the thought process includes. Bray has put his nuts on the line which is not the normal OS deal. This reminds me of Texas A&M last year signing Jeremy Stuckey out from under the noses of the PAC 12 before he hit the radar.

        • Jack says:
          VA:F [1.9.22_1171]

The review of this player’s film is only biased by his play on said film.

You mean Jeremiah Stuckey who was a well known quantity out of HS but had grade issues so he grey shirted then spent an entire year becoming fully qualified, playing well the following year and then committing to eaTme over offers from Cal, Ole Miss and Nikegon… late in the season… while he was officially a sophomore in terms of school but only a frosh because he grey shirted?

          That Jeremiah Stuckey?

I’m not arguing against the process. I’m just saying the need plus the questionable play don’t equal a good offer for OSU IMO. If he proves me wrong, good on him. But I doubt it.

Haley plays at Golden West which is about 5 minutes from my in laws. Let me tell you the tape doesn’t even do this dude justice. And Im not sure Jack why you are so down on him. Look at some of the progressions you see this kid make where he is covering 2-3 dudes and then transitions from coverage to make an open field tackle.

As was stated this is one of the better leagues in the country so its even more impressive than high school film. This kids just needs to bulk up and he could be special

I’m only down on him because of the tape, nothing else. I looked at his stats, and the tape pretty much covers his whole season. If those are his highlights, I don’t want to see his lowlights.

There was one dude on the tape who looked really good, so I looked him up.

It’s also disingenuous to claim a RS frosh is enticing because he’s a full qualifier. He’s 3X3 after 2013, not 4X3 like Stuckey was after 2012.

So when is he coming to OSU? Was he an injury RS in 2012, so he can RS in 2014 and still have three years eligibility?

Check out this game between Central Catholic/Jesuit up in the Portland area yesterday. (Future OSU pitcher Martinek was pitching)
Game was canceled after both benches cleared following some base running collisions. The first collision at home plate looked more just circumstantial than anything, and didn’t appear to be dirty (at least from this angle). But after that, the Jesuit 3B ran over to get in the face of the baserunner who initiated the contact, only to get leveled by the next base runner. Holy War baseball at it’s best.

Wow. That third baseman really caused a ruckus there. Really all his fault. AND then he runs away!! He’s the guy who crosses the video at the end.

The first collision is just what happens, no one at fault. The catcher initiated the contact, the runner stayed in the baseline and slid to the plate. Ball gets away and Jesuit just stands there. The play is still alive so credit the other runner for being heads up and continue to run. If the fielder is standing the basepath, the runner should initiate contact to get the obstruction call.

Looked like good hard baseball at first but the third baseman really took things to a new level.

        VA:F [1.9.22_1171]
        Rating: -3 (from 3 votes)

I agree with the first collision being no-fault or even the catcher’s fault. But the second collision warrants ejection and suspension for the second runner. And if the game would have continued the run would have been disallowed and the runner out. There is absolutely zero place in any sport for that kind of hit… any sport. If a fielder is in the path, the runner can exit the path to progress. If the umps are on the ball, the call would still be obstruction.

And if you look again, the home ump was clearly waving time-out as the second runner was running straight at him. That was a cheap shot of monumental proportions.

…. how can the ump call time out with a play in progress? And why should any base runner be watching the home plate ump?

The ump can do what he wants. It’s his field. In this case, he called it to gain control of a dumb charging 3B.

Ummm… because the ump was standing on the plate waving time-out? The second runner actually had to run off the base path to make the cheap shot. The path is outside the line, and the victim was standing to the infield side of the line when he was cheap-shotted.

Actually, the ump was right to call time-out because there was a non-player on the field and in play. Before play resumed, he then could have assessed the play and awarded the runner whatever base he deemed proper, including home plate.

I think we’ll be better. We may lose a lot of experience, but we also lose a lot of weaknesses. The players coming in and those still on the roster have much more defined roles and talents than the outgoing classes over the last couple years.

Think about it. We got better when Moreland came back, but not right away. It was Cooke and LMW (and later Duvivier) who really got the ball rolling. They will not have to take a back seat to anyone next year. And there will be no more offense/defense rotations at the end of games. Even GP2 will compliment, not play above or instead of them.

Gomis can play and take Moreland’s minutes. N’diaye will get on the floor. And the frosh are a good looking group.

Then they reeled off six straight wins as now-departed Brandin Cooks rose to become one of the best receivers in the country. Then they dropped six in a row to the better defenses in the Pac-12 before rallying for a Hawaii Bowl victory over a Chris Petersen-less Boise State team on Dec. 24.”

Still waiting for the deceiving part….

It sounds sensational to say they lost 6 straight. Sometimes math is hard?

Beavers fail to score more than 1 run in an inning yet again. Team just can’t put together big innings and it puts enormous pressure on pitchers.

4-2 Beavs after 3.5, while Parker says getting the leadoff batter on in the t4 didn’t accomplish much, I think pressure was put on the Coug pitcher. Several throws to first and stressed all inning with a baserunner to think about. Keep the pressure on, maybe we see the BP.
Sadly, same could be said of Moore. Andrew not looking sharp and can’t blame the ump today.

It worked! Coug starter leaves with 1 out t5. Runners at corners, Keyes needs to make this guy throw strikes.

And, he can’t throw strikes. Keyes RBI SAC fly, then two HBP and a BB.

Nice 6-4-3 DP to end the b5. Beavs up 6-3.

Moore pulled one batter too late. Parker pointed it out, Moore hadn’t fooled Tanielu all day and gives up a 2 RBI single to make it 8-5 Beavs with 2 out in b6, runners at 1 and 2.
Reser on to try to put on the brakes.

Moore is not the same guy as last year. He dominated last year with great control and staying ahead in the count. Mental or physical?

Or maybe just better scouting reports and the batters making adjustments. Get better or get hammered.

I fear Casper is the Gwachum of the baseball team. When he’s at ease with lesser competition or during practice, he does well. Poor guy; an error and then hits into a double play.

Big 7th for the Beavs, score 4 with two down and nobody on. Peterson and Davis with 1 RBI, Conforto with 2 in the inning. 8-0 Beavs

Fry’s shutout ended in the 8th when he gives up a leadoff triple and scores on 5-3 groundout. Fry did end Rosen’s hitting streak though.

8-1 Beavs going to the 9th

I know when you have a 7 run lead in the b9 you tend to pitch to contact and might not be as focused as you should be but the BP continues to struggle as Schultz gives up a leadoff 2b and a BB. But a DP and then a looking K finishes off the cougs.

Point taken. Must be Normalcy Bias. I think though it’s 5 games (the 6th was a CG by Wetzler and the 7th would be the Portland game).

Some interesting comments from Luke Del Rio, contrasting OSU and Alabama. I like the remark about needing to develop a culture of winning. The comment regarding the complexity of OSU’s offense (more complex than Alabama’s) is interesting. Speaks to the issue of OSU probably needing to simplify the game for the players:

Conforto is second in the nation in OBP. 4th in walks.

Wetzler 4th in nation for ERA.

Still only 1 home run given up all year.

The freshman seem to be wearing down so getting the next weekend off hopefully will help recharge the batteries. Morrison and Hamilton need to try to get back to what they were doing earlier in the season.
