  1. Last night I didn’t notice Wetzler’s usual enthusiasm and wondered if he was depressed/distracted/not himself. Good to see his performance so far today. Only 62 pitches through 5, he’ll be ready to go an inning or two if the Beavs play tonight, you know he has the heart.

    • Not surprised Wetzler is getting it done. He’s a big time player and no doubt he would be at his best. Would be nice if he could get a little help from the lineup

  2. The freshmen are the only ones producing at this point. If they somehow win this game, Casey will need to make some changes at the top of the lineup. It’s pretty shocking how bad Conforto has been. He has usually has been big time in the postseason for Oregon State. Looks so lost at the plate

  3. First game in the regionals to which I’ve been able to listen – Mike Parker has the loquacious, maddening habit of describing the play – even though it has ended – before telling the result.

  4. Scott Schultz came back for the opportunity that presents itself tonight. The game he pitched in relief against LSU in the regional two years ago was one of the most clutch performances ever by a Beaver pitcher. I hope that same pitcher shows up tonight.

  5. Hey Angry!

Just got home from fishing for the weekend and saw your post on the previous thread about OSU should be fine against UC Irvine’s middle tier finesse pitching last night. Ummm, when I heard Friday night that Elliot Surrey was going to be pitching for the Eaters last night I got extremely worried. You see, I watched Surrey pitch for the Corvallis Knights last summer and he was arguably the best pitcher in the West Coast Conference. Middle tier and finesse my ass. Either way, I hope our boys are pissed after that butt raping UCI gave them last night. Go Beavs!

  6. Beavs a bit unlucky as Conforto just misses. Then makes a baserunning blunder, probably would’ve scored on Keyes base hit.

  7. Really bad baserunning by Hamilton. Only thing they haven’t done well is run the bases. It has cost them two runs

  8. Wasted opportunity, Hamilton at 3b on a steal and throwing error with one out and gets stranded. Hendrix with IBB and Peterson grounds out. 1-16 in the tourney

  9. For tomorrow, does UCI have any MORE Corvallis Knights pitchers? It would be nice if their pitcher wasn’t familiar with our ball park… Geez

  10. Designated home team will be decided by a coin flip. Beaver defense was stellar behind Schultz. At least 4 excellent plays and Conforto’s throw to the plate. It would’ve been nice to get to their pen but the Eater thrower put in quite a performance himself.

  11. Pitching predictions: Davis starts and goes 3 assuming he can find the plate. Thompson for three or four and Max in for the last couple. Get some early runs boys!

    • 5 innings and a quality start. Dylan picks up the win. Karma since he got screwed out of a win earlier in the year.

      • Only has a couple pitches so 2nd time through the lineup gets tricky unless he is really lighting up the radar gun.

        • “Moore, Fry, Wetzler & Schultz May be good for an inning. Davis, Thompson, Jackson, Engelbrekt & Reser must limit ‘Eaters to 4 runs”………per Jim Wilson.

          • Just say no to Reser. He has gone in the tank the last month. He did deliver earlier in the season, but those days are long gone.

  12. It’s all going to come down to who can get to today’s starters early and which bullpen can hang on.

Looking at UC Irivine’s stats, their 4th starter is Manarino. 3-3 on the year with a 2.94 ERA.

Beavs should go with Davis. While he does have walk issues, he’s the best chance to win. Plus if he starts in the RF, and comes into pitch, they’ll risk losing his bat for the game if he doesn’t finish the game on the mound.

If whoever the Beavs start can go 6, they have a great shot at advancing.

    • Can someone clarify that rule for me? I remember the announcers made a comment last night too implying the Beavs would be in danger of losing Davis’ bat late in the game is he was used as a reliever and I didn’t understand why.
Scenario: If “Pitcher X” starts the game and goes three innings before he is pulled for Davis, why couldn’t the substitution be “outfielder 4” into the game for “pitcher x” with Davis moving from RF to pitcher? Then in the 7th, couldn’t “pitcher Y” come out of the bullpen with the substition being made for “outfielder 4”, having Davis and “pitcher Y” switch positions, putting Davis back in RF and keeping his bat in the lineup?

      • My thoughts as well. Seems to me the guy who plays RF in place of Dylan is the one whose bat is at risk of being lost if Dylan is pulled from the mound (or the “bump” for you young pups). The question I haven’t thought much about is, how does the DH come into play here?

        • I’d like a clarification too, I was always under the impression two guys could rotate between pitcher and outfield the whole game every other batter. Maybe not be entitled to warmup pitches is all. But alas my expertise is in track, not baseball.

          • Here’s how the DH rule works,

            1. A player can be both the DH or P. He can be replaced as either and stay in the game as the other. (Say Davis starts as the DH/P, he can stay in the game as the DH when relieved. If he’s pinch hit as DH, he can still pitch.) This only applies when the player starts the game as P/DH.

This is why Davis has only started in the games he’s pitched.

            2. If Davis starts in RF, the lineup will have a DH in the lineup. If Davis relieves the starter, he becomes the P/DH and whoever the DH was is now the RF. Davis can’t go back to RF unless another player in the field comes on to pitch. If Davis is relieved, he is out of the game and the place in the order is now occupied by the pitcher.

This is where it essentially becomes the AL DH rule. A fielder comes into pitch and the “DH” goes out into the field. Thereby losing the DH for the rest of the game. Unless the pitcher switches with Davis.

It’s a hybrid rule between high school and MLB. Designed to keep the good hitting pitchers in the game.

  13. Here is a bit more information re UC Irvine pitching and tonight’s game.

Junior left-hander Evan Manarino, UC’s 4th starter this season, appeared in 19 games, started 10 games, pitched 52 innings, walked only 7 batters, and struck out 42. However, opposing batters hit .317 against him. He is the likely starter for UCI tonight.

UCI’s star pitcher, Andrew Morales, threw 107 pitches on Friday against UNLV. With two day’s rest, Morales might be able to go a couple of innings in relief if UCI needs him.

Other than that, the likely relievers tonight for UCI are as follows:

Sam Moore (closer, threw 13 pitches against OSU on Saturday)

    31 games
    43 innings pitched
    1.88 ERA
    .223 batting average against

Jimmy Litchfield (threw 21 pitches vs OSU on Saturday)

    26 games
    37 innings pitched
    3.58 ERA
    .248 batting average against

    Matt Fielding

    23 games
    27 innings pitched
    4.00 ERA
    .262 batting average against

Mitch Merten (threw 10 pitches vs OSU on Saturday)

    21 games
    24 innings pitched
    6.20 ERA
    .287 batting average against

Kyle Davis (has a live arm and good stats, but coming back from injury and has not pitched that much this season — could be a wild card in tonight’s game….)

    11 games
    19 innings pitched
    1.37 ERA
    .156 batting average against

    • Davis makes more sense to start but if Casey thinks his walk issues are too much, then Thompson is the next guy up.

I doubt Moore will come in and pitch. He’s not quite Jonah Nickerson yet. Maybe maybe he closes the game out.

  14. Gregg Gottlieb hired by Tinkle… not the first Gottlieb to be an assistant here.

Question: Does this mean Doug will stop being a shit about the real OSU?

  15. Andy Peterson is basically another Max Gordon who gets on base less at this point. No idea why he hits second. He’s a 9 hole hitter. Automatic out

  16. Can’t give them extra outs, those four last inning lead to a run. Ice has been good, but he needed to get those.

  17. Coach Casey is a great coach, but Gillespie is beating him bad. Yeskie finally gets to go to the mound about 4 batters too late. This is on the coaches at this point….I am so disappointed, we are just giving these guys the opportunity to go on. 5 innings is all you wanted out of Jackson (and we got it)….not impressed at all with the management of this fiasco at this point!

  18. Yeskie looks as lost as the rest of this set of pitchers……something wrong with Andrew Moore at the end of 5 to finish our side of this? No we go with fr, hbp man, now englebreck….we did not develop a bullpen during the season an it shows big time now….Most disappointed I have been with Beaver baseball in a long time!!!

    • Offense stinks right now and the bullpen has been an issue for years. Yeskie doesn’t develop bullpen arms. You don’t win a title with a crap pen, yet it’s been a problem for a few seasons. Probably won’t change any time soon either.

    • Looking at how they went through relievers in the 6th, it looks like the plan was get to the 7th and let Moore finish it. It wish they went to Max earlier in the 6th, instead of trying to save him in case Andrew struggled.

  19. Pitching has not been the problem. Our offense is dead, the best swings we have had are from our freshmen. Peterson and Clark have had horrible at bats.

    • Morrison should have been in the 2 hole a while ago. Peterson cannot hit. Amazing that Casey didn’t realize how much of a liability Peterson is. Conforto never has anyone on base when he’s up and never gets a pitch to hit then.

  20. Shocked by how poor the offense has been…I figured 5-6 runs tonight but nope…Look like they are pressing just as bad as Friday and Saturday…Casey has to learn how to keep his guys lose. They aren’t the unknowns anymore. They are the hunted.

  21. This is the most I have commented ever. Yeskie needs to follow Lees and leave….we need a different mindset than complete game starts or nothing (no bullpen). UCI looks good, but I would be surprised if they win one at Okie State. They so far are the better team!!!

  22. Damn, if Davis hits that to left it may have gone off the wall or gotten out. Bummer. Can’t remember the last time a ball went out to dead center at Goss. Balls just die in front of the track there
