Beavs vs Trojans – series thread

65

First game starts in about an hour, 5:35 pacific.  The entire series will be streamed by the school, the rest of the conference schedule is set for PAC12 Net.

Trojan pitching, with a team ERA over 5 and having given up 7+ runs in EACH of their last five games, is at the opposite end of the scale from last weekends tussle with the Bruins. Will the Beavs bats gain confidence this weekend? Adley? KJ?

The long awaited return of Drew Rasmussen should occur in a relief role this weekend, if you believe Nate and Eggers. Let’s see if Fehmel has a good outing, if not Saturday could be the day.

And, a couple other questions for y’all to mull over:

1)Which Mighty Kwan will show up? 0/4 last Saturday, but 7 hits in his last 15 AB’s.

2)D1 rates Larnach as the 73rd best outfielder in the country, highest of all Beav OF’s, agree?

GO BEAVS!

    • Yeah, it sure ain’t an exact science, this rating thing.
But (in conference) both Kwan and Anderson share Larnach’s 1.000 fielding % and each has a higher Batting Avg as well as a higher Slg %.

  1. Shit, thanks for making the thread. I had a cocktail for the first time in a while, was talking music/shop in the other thread, and totally forgot.

  2. FEAR THE ORANGE BAT!
Mighty Kwan, after a first inning double went for naught, with a two out bunt single which ends up with two runs across on a throwing error.
    2-1 Beavs b2, 2 down.

EDIT: Kwan looks to be coming up lame from the collision at 1b, thrown out trying to score from second on a single by Larnach.

  3. Wonder if the new casino in Ridgefield, Illani, will pay OSU to advertise in Reser? I remember when OSU first refused Spirit Mountain’s $1 million offer to advertise in the stadium. The school first said no but obviously have softened their approach as they have Spirit Mountain banners in the end zones or on the scoreboard.

    • A healthy Kwan would have been safe on that first one, IMHO. He looks to have a slight charlie horse from that collision.

  4. Guys have been taking advantage of the opposing teams weak bullpen all season, not sure if they will get the same kind of late inning magic in the post-season as better bullpens come to play.

  5. Drew with the save. 10 pitches. 2 batters. 6 strikes.

Don’t think he’ll make another appearance this weekend. Let’s see how the arm responds after pitching in game conditions.

        • He had 5 pitches vs UCLA, but has missed more time than I’d like due to ill defined back and sore arm issues. When he is “on” he often is lights out for even 2 innings or so.
He recently said that he is 100%, hope so. Put he and Mulholland together and you’ve got left side relievers who’ve been darned impressive.

  6. A couple post game things you may have missed:

1-Rasmussen was “94-97 and up to 98 with his fastball” according to D1 Baseball.

2-Casey said he wasn’t surprised at the Trojans play, the GT says he feels “every team in this conference is a top 30 team”. Um, take that Meggs!

3-Heimlich did a great job, but it looks like the ucks Peterson is a lock for POW. 20 k’s in a complete game vs ASU. Thursday May 11 is the first game of the conference series; Heimlich vs Peterson should be something to see, actually worth spending time in Eugene for this one!

One more: Jacoby picked up his first career salami yesterday! HR #100 for him, Madras Proud!

  7. OT: I watched the UCLA vs OS football 60 minute replay on Pac12 Network this morning. MM really didn’t play well at all, he held the ball too long and mostly only completed dump off passes. I think that game was early in the season, but it was a good reminder of where we were at the beginning of last year. Also, Nall was hurt that game, but the running game was still strong. If he is the guy, I hope he has made strides.

    • I think he has and i think luton will push him if luton comes out on top cuz he earned it i think its a good thing but i feel good with an improved mm. We just need the ol to be solid like last year. Defense will be this years staple.

      • I would love it if, as reported, MM is a cerebral (said to be 4.0 gpa or very close) qb who will use this intelligence to get better and better. He just needs to do his job.

        • I wonder if being cerebral is MM’s biggest challenge. He holds the ball a little long. I have a kid with that approach to sports and while he does things with a perfectionists approach, his thinking can sometimes make him half a step slow.

          • Yeah i think i read andersen saying the qbs need to get the ball out within 2 seconds. I feel mm is coachable and we’ll see improvement. Either way still in better shape at the position than llast year. If they could lock up brevin white i would feel really good about the future.

  8. Beavs get 2 guys drafted (Harlow/Decoud) and so far a handful have signed free agency deals (Bolden, Navarro, Stanton, Ortiz, Chapelle)
Surprised no Gavin Andrews. Is it the injury hostory? I thought he would have been considered one of our top prospects coming into the draft?

    • For those keeping track, oregon was shut out of the draft amd had 1 guy sign a free agent deal (Brown)

Not too shabby for a team that regularly has a top 20 recruiting class…..Great return on investment.

    • And Tim Cook. I hadn’t realized his impressive combine #s. I am especially pleased for him. Injury – out in 2015 – after his monster game in 2016 (don’t recall which one) – and before Nall had returned in full – I thought Cook didn’t get enough chances to play.

Ortiz? The avocado farm can wait, for now.

  9. Jarimillo committs to oregon and says they’re going to put oregon back on the map. Just in case u guys need a little comedy.

    • So much for Eubanks or more accurately, Eubank’s dad’ss assertion a few weeks back that the “intention is to make it to the NBA” (paraphrasing slightly). Hopefully, we have heard the last of this nonsense and Drew is back for another much needed season of seasoning!

      • I don’t understand why anyone thinks that attitude is poor. I tell my children that they need to apply themselves fully to any task. I’ve seen nothing from the father that conflicts with this premise.

If your child is going to do something that you think is incorrect, you are not likely to dissuade them. So the proper tactic is to have their back and to tell them they better commit to that decision fully. When it turns out you were right all along, you’re still there for them.

    • Yup. One of the things they need to change, though, is to aim a speaker from the scoreboard to the GA section just to the left of it (as looking from the scoreboard to home plate). The sound over there is awful.

Madrigal is tiny but he sure put a few dents in the ball.

My 11 year old son asked me if the Beaver pitcher was any good. I told him I’d have to ask the people on this site first before I answered.

  10. Thinking Beavs go 12-4 the rest of the way. I hate saying it, but UOs Peterson is lights out right now. A mid-week loss and Friday loss to Schmucks is likely. Then lose a game to Cal and WSU, or ABCU (guys being rested, etc) should wrap up the season. Beavs will be 1st or 2nd seed to end the season, which is great.

  11. Beavs magic number is 6 to clinch pac12 outright.

Earliest team could clinch is likely at Oregon which would be pretty sweet.

  12. Bryce Fehmel seems to be going through the Sophomore pitching slump in conference (Jorge Reyes, Andrew Moore). Conference teams have caught-up to him, hopefully he rights the ship in the postseason, and surprises some unsuspecting teams.
Casey/Yeskie may need to look to Rasmussen for that Saturday pitcher….but is it too early yet to start him….? Be nice to see Rasmussen get the nod either way….against the Schmucks.
