Lots of good speculation on the last long thread on who’ll take the mound today…..if the game is played today.
First, check out the long version of the Mississippi State fan telling the TV reporter, with a straight face, how his wife’s boyfriend funded his trip and his go-fund-me account to replace the leg! Fun stuff.
Back to Beavs……Lots to discuss beyond how to best use pitchers. Kwan’s status, how do Malone, Preston Jones, and Andy Armstrong fit in; and, of course, what’s the latest official word on Nice Guy Mike’s career?
Seems too easy to say that one less HBP and one less error would have avoided this whole “losers bracket” business…..but I think it’s true. Hard to imagine another sloppy performance vs UNC. But, that’s why they play the games.
GO BEAVS!
I could claim #1 but I chose to defer to someone who needs it more than me. JB
…. of is it “more than I”
It’s not a linking verb, and the pronoun isn’t the object of a preposition.
goo goo g’ joob

Team designated at visitor are 5-2. Looks to be 6-2 if ark holds on.
PC’s comments regarding who our pitcher might be:
“Somebody’s going to have to do it, maybe a reliever that hasn’t started. There (are) a few guys that you can look at that have been in games that started. … There’s a bunch of options.”
I got my money on Jake Mulholland to start tonight.
Britton. Has the most experience starting of all the options.
Jake M. went 4.1 hitless innings vs Fullerton last year in Omaha so there’s good confidence in him.
I don’t like LH starting — he seems to be a headcase right now, probably putting way too much weight on his own shoulders to pitch a complete game….trying to be too perfect. Re-watched Saturday’s game and that was probably the worst I’ve seen him….ever. Maybe he was worse at Utah or Arizona, but I didn’t see him. Still think he is best as a middle relief role going forward. Maybe it was the heat, who knows.
Extending hopefulness of Riley’s departure – how could he not resign from the Beavs (yet again) if the league goes through April and he wouldn’t be available for spring practice?
NCAA baseball twitter page posted the wind is blowing straight out to center. Beneficial to the teams with better power numbers I suppose.
Go Beavs with balls and sticks
Can this game just end already…
Arkansas pitching dominating a pretty good Texas Tech line-up.
Close to game time. What’s the forecast?
Decent. Some light showers forecast this evening.
Oh no! They are wearing black tops. I know it’s cooler, but does that signify Luke?
Per Lundeberg, “I can confirm that Steven Kwan now has baseball pants on, which means about as much as the shorts did 45 minutes ago.”
Ten minutes later, Lundeberg observes, “Kwan not moving around too well.”
Perv…
5:05 pacific is the new start time per OSU Baseball twitter.
Luke gets the start, Malone DH, Zak at 1b, Nick leading off.
Good move. Luke should get the start. Go with your best guy and worry about the next game if/when you get there.
Interesting.
Luke gets a shot at redemption, UNC has to beat your best twice to send you home.
Yes, smart, even if it doesn’t pan out.
Luke might be his own worst enemy….hope I’m wrong.
He will be fine. He’s had 4 days to refocus…everyone has an off night, we’ve just haven’t seen too many from him.
Agree, he’ll be fine mentally.
Per Casey (not a direct quote)…rest is no problem due to the limited number of pitches Luke threw Saturday, he even wanted to close on Monday.
Now will he be sharp?……..Casey says that depends on his mental state.
Even if that’s true you have to go down with your best guy. If they lost tonight and he never pitched that would be worse than him pitching and getting beat.
I think not having a 20-30 mph tail wind will be the best thing for all the pitchers that don’t just throw fastballs.
I’m 50/50 on the start. Would rather have someone else start to mix it up a bit, then have him come in the 3rd or 4th inning. UNC has seen him once already.
Offense needs to get off to a hot start. Can’t play from behind here.
Casey must be hoping he can go with the weekend rotation starting today and if they get through to the title series, guys can go on short rest.
Luke is starting
Jack Anderson in Center field, no Kwan
Nobach in left field. Malone is DH.
I sure like having Nobach and Malone both in the lineup.
Malone setting himself up to be in the top half of the lineup next year. He’ll have to win a position battle if he wants to get drafted though.
Grenier!
First pitch I watch goes out. Nice.
Adley!
Uh-oh
2-0 Beavs.
This UNC pitcher is so predictable.
Don’t like Madrigal being too aggressive there. Pitcher throwing balls and he is swinging away.
Casey is setting up the pitching to not just advance, but advance with a chance to win the whole thing. Advancing is not good enough for him and this team. Been there, done that.
I would hope he keeps him to about 70 pitchers
Might be a slugfest. ball seems to be jumping off the bats in the 1st inning..
Any of you guys with Sling getting a shitty/slow connection?
You’re a slinger?
Greg Street is that you?
That pitch to Gretler was a foot outside! Greg Street lives.
Heimlich had two pitches that were at least 6 inches closer to the plate!!!
I think they are f’ing with him.
The punch out antics/exclamation point made this dick look even worse.
Parker sees it this way: 3 of Lukes strikes have been called balls, 1 pitch called strike was a ball.
These hitters not fooled by Heimlich — already 3 hits after only 2 innings.
hes getting squeezed on pitches too.
3-0 Beavs.
The predictable pitcher gets yanked. Angels drafted a dud in that guy.
ump sucks ass calling 6-8″ off the plate into the other batters box. Great adjustment by Granier.
yet LH is getting squeezed on some of his pitches. Agreed. This ump is worse than garbage. Is he Greg Street’s brother or something?
Jax, was that you waking up end of last inning?
haha
Nope.
But I’m touched that you allow me to rent free space in your head.
I love you too.
Grenier wakes up! Looks like UNC is using last years scouting report on Trevor.
Eek.
Heimlich needs the Heimlich maneuver…..he’s choking.
Huge mistake not going home with that. He had him, and now you have runners on 2nd 3rd with only 1 out.
getting screwed again by the umps.
3-3.
Might be time to get Luke out of there.
Wow, horrible call by the umpire. Fair ball my ass.
Fucking terrible call
Wow. Another rare play goes against the Beavs.
Luck O da Beavs. I seriously think the refs will fuck with us whenever Heimlich is on the mound.
Why let Heimlich go 1-0 on the batter then take him out?
Casey came jumping out of the dugout there when Luke missed with that pitch. He’s lost his patience with Luke’s inconsistency.
LH shouldn’t have started…. his pitching was borderline, but that error really showed he’s rushing — mentally he’s just not slowing down the game.
3 zip. Thought they had this games by the balls.
Tough outing. The two swinging bunts, the bad call, and grenier not going home made it worse.
Well shit.
GoBeavs….
The umps have decided that the Beavs must win the whole thing without Heimlich pitching. It wasn’t going to happen last year and won’t happen this year either. He gets not only no benefit of the doubt, but is squeezed from the first batter of the game. Worse than that, first base ump misses an easy fair/foul call. Just like last year, a questionable fair/foul ball gets called against the Beavs.
Fix may be in even if Beavs can win this one. MSU is the tourney darling and the SEC won’t allow the Beavs to beat them twice anyway.
Need to get to 7-8 runs to win this game.
There is something wrong with LH, either mentally or physically. Almost every breaking ball, or slider was in the dirt, same as last start. Nothing like the same kid we know. Going to have to win this without him and his stuff..
Such a bummer, because this will confirm to MLB GM’s that they shouldn’t have drafted him. He’ll probably never pitch again after Omaha except in beer leagues if he can’t show more than this in the CWS.
Beavs getting tight now, and this UNC pitcher looks better than the starter.
Normally a tight Beav is good thing.
If the beavs win this game, they will have shown they can win a championship.
Baseball really needs robo umps behind the dish.
Are any companies close to field testing this? I still think human umps should rule on other stuff, but balls n strikes should be computer consistent in the 21st century…
Answered my own question…man I would love to see this get more traction.
https://youtu.be/bT8gCVaXC4Q
What a headcase of a team lately
This is starting to feel like a loss. Frustrating ump, botched a double play ball, look tight…
Team has lost it.
Agree, except that its a bullpen game, the OBrien’s arm might fall off any time now…
4-3 UNC
Turned to my lady and said “feels like the floodgates are going to open very soon.” right before the hit (which of course had a Beaver bobbling as well).
UNC very patient at the plate, milking every at bat. Beavs need to be swing here.
Terrible AB by Malone.
Yikes.
Goodnight, guys.
Why is Anderson in centerfield? That’s two plays today that someone else could’ve made. Some seriously questionable calls made by Casey today…
Agree with that.
We’re so afraid to let Preston hit
At this point he couldn’t be worse than anyone else in the line up.
Well so much for this year.
Holding the fat lady’s mouth shut right now, but not sure for how much longer…
Need a spark soon, Beavs…
Horrible decision to start Heimlich tonight. He’s never been good on short rest. Killed our early momentum.
keystone comedy act again and I didn’t think the beavs could repeat their first comedy act.
Too Late Nate with his final appearance of the season? Chamberlain should have been out before that home run.
As for the Beavs approach at the plate, when the ump is inconsistent, it results in a rattled approach rather than a settled and patient approach. Guys can’t go up expecting a fair shake and bergin feeling the necessity to hit anything that is close. I don’t think the Beavs are ever call out looking because they are letting strikes go by. They aren’t strikes and umps that are familiar with the beavs know it. These umps don’t know the Beavs are that discriminating and therefore ring them up looking.
How to adjust in the last 3 games of the year when is a departure from the approach all year long?
this game is over. Lots of talent but didn’t show any moxie on the big stage…goes to show how difficult it is to win the title.
It seems we have failed to get the lead off runner on base every inning. No wonder we can’t get any momentum going.
What a kick in the nuts. Who would have though that our pitching and defense would have been our downfall.
No kidding.
Guess those of you who thought Mulholland should start had it right.
Still think starting Heimlich was the right move. He just choked and showed that this all has gotten to him (can’t blame him). Gotta go with the guy who is what 27-2 or something like that over the past two years? Just have to. Kwan injury was big. Umps sucked both ways but more so against the Beavs. Luck ‘o da Beavs strikes again. I look forward to next year w/o Heimlich and all this distraction and anti-OSU bias.
Oh, and gotta tip the hat to this UNC reliever. He’s been great. Their starter was junk. My good friend lives in NC and said their fanbase is the absolute worst in the Nation…he lives and breaths NC culture but was rooting for OSU because of how bad the fans are.
“w/o Heimlich and all of this distraction and anti-OSU bias.” —will the ragers of the twitter mob ever drop the subject or will the anger be focused onto the university that allowed him to ever play in the first place?
Pretty sure they will drop it once he’s gone. Nobody even knows what OSU is.
Oklahoma State?
Mullholland was the better choice all along. Most of it on him and the fielding. Again, the errors being the downfall, with Luke’s being the first nail in the coffin. The umps plain suck, and the rules need to change. Bottom line — this team choked!
Taylor chases OBrien. New game here in the 8th?
Why do we auto-bench Zak Taylor when he’s got one of our only hits?
HERE WE GO!! Some Beaver Mojo!! 2 on no outs runners at the corners!
“Cody” Grenier with a great at bat
That was impressive.
Holy shit Adley is good
CLUTCHMAN!!!
Fucking stud,
Gets the 1 hole up in the 9th, guaranteed
Blue sphincters are puckering..
Hell yeah. 7-6 Beavs.
Need more.
Well, thud.
Gotta get six more outs…
WTF WAS THAT?
If Casey called that bunt…huge wart.
The guy can’t throw a strike a nd he pops up a bunt?
I don’t think he did…he turned and started explaining himself to the dugout immediately
Trying to get cute…’no one will expect this’
Why bunt with a pitcher struggling to hit the zone
No shit!,,,
That bunt killed the mood. Could be a momentum changer. Makes no sense on any level. It was also ball 2. If that winds up costing us the game Casey should retire.
You are officially nuts!!
Nope. That was the worst coaching decision in baseball history.
Nope. You don’t fire Casey.
I said he should retire.
If you call for a bunt there you should retire.
Nope. You don’t fire Casey.
That would mean he would fire himself. It sounded from the commentary that Andy Armstrong might have got a sign confused the way he was holding his arms up to the dugout.
I hate gretler at 1st…
Here come the umpires to influence the outcome…
We didn’t trust Armstrong to hit. He hadn’t batted in a month but he should have got a shot
Then have him take a strike before pulling that shit…
Why aren’t the announcers talking about the atrocity of that bunt? Might be the worst baseball play I have ever seen in hundreds of thousands of innings watched.
Wow, now bad umps again.
Casey has nobody but himself to blame.
3 outs left..
This pitcher Baum threw last night
Nick setting the table
New pitcher Hiatt got hit hard by us and by Miss St.
He threw only 9 pitches yesterday and gave up 3 hits
Excellent observation! And the trend continues tonight!
Home plate ump blows…..all over the place with his zone.
Fuck yeah!
MALONE!!
Apparently this team needs rain to play well.
They’re like Eskimos in snow.
Like a Chia Pet..just add water.
Or like a gremlin, don’t get them wet!
Holy shit what a beautiful inside out swing by Malone
This is awesome. Like I said, buddy said UNC has THE WORST fanbase in the entire nation.
Casey’s huge bunt wart will go unnoticed thanks to the bats.
FWIW, Parker immediately said that Armstrong was arguing with Casey after the bunt attempt. Apparently Casey was chewing him out for bunting and Andy was coming right back. Parker takes the exchange as a strong indication that Casey did not call for a bunt. Again, FWIW
Sounds like maybe a missed sign? Though, you shouldn’t even need signs with bases loaded and 2 outs. .
Post game radio with Pat pretty clear that Armstrong made the decision on his own.
This rain looks to be getting worse. They going to finish this game?
Yes. There is barely anything on the radar.
Okay, good.
Good grief…when the bats come alive they come alive I guess.
Pretty gritty to turn a patchwork pitching effort into what should be a W.
I had turned the game off…my son asked to turn it back on. Glad I didn’t find out about this comeback in the morning.
You’ve got a good kid!
Put Tweedt in
Save mulholland for long relief vs miss st
UnFuckingBeaverable….fuck you umpires….great comeback win.
When it rains, it pours boys. Another gutsy win
Umps (aka ESPN) going to let us beat an SEC team?
Unlikely
They’ll allow one win over MSU, the second………no way if they can control it. It will take swinging strikeouts by Beavs pitchers and solid offensive effort, cannot leave anything to doubt.
Sadly I have to agree. They want an all SEC finals again. I don’t see the Beavs winning close games where 50/50 calls go their way.
Gotta love a moist beaver…..
The bats just need 6 inches closer to the plate and they take off!!!!
So much doom and gloom in this place. Our team doesn’t give up!
This win kind of reminds me of the 2016 Civil War when the Beavers were down 24-14 and then the rain started to fall and then the Ducks quacked themselves to a loss. The same thing tonight as the rain started and NC couldn’t close the Beavers out.
Miss St is going to start their #3 guy on Friday, Billingsley. He’a got a 4.92 ERA and a batting avg against of .270, the lowest stats of anybody we’ve seen in a while
Casey got asked in the press conference about the bunt and he said they did not have a drag bunt called. It was the player who thought he had an opportunity, but it didn’t turn out that way per Casey.
That’s what I figured
To repeat: “The Beaver has awakened!”
Am I the only one who’d like to hear Angry’s explanation of his dislike for Casey? Jealousy?
I don’t dislike Casey…
Just to piss you off. You still haven’t figured that out?
Maybe he’s covered in warts and it triggers him when angry mentions them?
Beavs are the designated home team on Friday. If this is “we landed on the moon”, my apologies
https://i.turner.ncaa.com/sites/default/files/external/gametool/brackets/baseball_d1_2018.pdf
Good news, just feels “right” to be home team.
I’m thinking Fehmel can fool the bulldogs for at least the first two times through the order. If the Beavs bats perform against Billingsley the way other opponents have, they’ll have a good chance of forcing a game Saturday.
As for a Saturday game, I think ohiobeav has it right above when said, “MSU is the tourney darling and the SEC won’t allow the Beavs to beat them twice anyway.
IDK about the rest of you but that home plate ump was once again, fucking atrocious. That called 3rd strike on Malone in the 8th that was CLEARLY up and ball four made me want to find and choke out Greg Street just for being Greg Street in 2017.
Even Malone thought it was ball four. I know Casey trusts his guys but I would have gone ballistic on some of those calls.
I understand ESPN has a controlling interest in this thing and it’s money driven. But can we get some fucking umpires that are competent? Please?
How many called 3rd strikes on the Beavs? Gretler’s called 3rd in the 2nd was atrocious.
There were plenty of atrocious strikes called against Beavs batters that were clearly not strikes.
Can’t get competent ones with integrity. As I said last year regarding greg street, this isn’t competition, this is a WWF-like managed appearance of such. There are desired outcomes controlled by the distribution network.
I want to disagree with you. But when a conference gets 11 of its 14 teams into the tournament it’s really hard to debate that. Something needs to change because it puts the other conferences at a disadvantage no matter how much they win during the regular season.
“Something needs to change….” is based on a desire for fair COMPETITION and CONTESTS that many viewers in target markets don’t share; most viewers want their views of their conferences and teams affirmed by the network, not challenged by competitive play. The notion of competition and contests has largely been lost. When “other teams” like OSU are winning in the regular season, its unlikley a significant market share is watching. 11/14 is absurd.
Not disagreeing
When I stated I want to disagree it’s because a part of me still wants to still believe in the purity of said competition. May the best team win. But I’ve seen enough with my own eyes these last few years that I know this tournament is heavily weighted towards teams from the southeast. Particularly the ACC and SEC. When those two conferences compile 1/4 of the field, it’s not a competition. It’s stacking the deck.
If the Beavs are going to win this thing, they are going to have to beat the SEC, ESPN and umpires. Don’t expect that to happen. Especially when Luke is pitching. That was clearly evident tonight.
I liked how the Beavers adjusted and started to protect the opposite batters box with 2 strikes.
One last request for the night. I love Jack Anderson’s moxie but he should NOT be in center field on Friday. Preston Jones has way better range. Keep Malone as the DH for his bat in the line up. If Kwan is able to go put him in left or right.
Watching Kwan jog to 1st after his intentional BB speaks volume about his running ability (not much). Preston is probably a good option w/ Anderson in LF. Of course, need to look at MSU pitchers (L vs. R).
I agree but the problem is that we need Nobachs bat in the lineup too. Nobach is at his best when he’s DH
Grenier has a bone to pick with the 2nd base ump.
Hope there aren’t rules against criticizing the officials.
https://twitter.com/Kdyn2Cadyn/status/1009663984587493381?s=19
Whats a dirty slide to that ump? Rounding first with the bat in your hand ready to Nancy Carrigan the second baseman.
Cadyn appears to only be quoting the 2b ump, not that that will matter if the ESPN/SEC/NCAA decides discipline is in order.
I hope the Beavs continue to call out these umpires.
I agree, but, just as many here are disillusioned with the lack of honest competition at the CWS; most will also agree that you won’t catch Barnes calling out these umps!
Now, Casey? That remains to be seen AFTER the season is over or certainly whenever he finally decides to hang ’em up. BTW, didja notice him complementing the UofW players and pointedly not referring to Meggs?………I don’t think Casey forgets easily.
Anyone seen a video of the 2-run foul/fair ball that put UNC ahead?
Nigel Burton posted it last night.
https://twitter.com/CoachNBurton/status/1009616424719941632?s=19
lol… I didn’t notice it watching the replay last night but look at the batter. He is slowly jogging to first and then the ump calls fair and he has like a half second delay where he is all surprised then kicks it into high gear.
By definition of “Fair Ball”, the ruling should be foul because it never settled in fair territory between home plate and first and third base. It did slam into the ground, but it must hit fair territory past the 1st base line; not prior to first and then crossing 1st base.
SECTION 27. A legally batted ball that settles on or over fair territory (see
7-6-a-e):
a. Settles on fair territory between home plate and first or third bases;
b. Bounds past first or third base on or over fair territory;
c. Touches first, second, or third base, or that first falls on fair territory on or
beyond first or third base, including the foul pole;
d. First touches a player, umpire or any piece of equipment while over fair
territory. A batted ball that hits the pitcher’s rubber and rebounds untouched
to foul territory between first and home or third and home is a foul ball.
Fair Territory
SECTION 28. That part of the playing field within and including the first- and
third-base lines from home plate to the bottom of the playing-field fence and
perpendicularly upwards. Both foul lines are in fair territory.
Note: A ball shall be judged fair or foul according to the relative position of the
ball and the foul line, including the foul pole, and not as to whether the fielder is
on fair or foul territory at the time the ball is touched.
The new replay review should state that a replay/challenge is available on determining fair/foul balls when the ball is struck into the ground in front of home plate or is hit past 1st or 3rd base and ends in foul territory before a player or umpire touches the ball.
In the foul ball section 35b is the ruling that should have been enforced for foul ball.
Foul Ball
SECTION 35. A batted ball that (see 7-7-a-f):
a. Settles on foul territory between home plate and first base or third base;
b. Bounds past first or third base on or over foul territory;
c. First touches foul territory beyond first or third base; or
d. First touches a player, umpire or any object not part of the playing field while
over foul territory.
A.R.?A ball is to be judged fair or foul with respect to its position relative to the foul
lines and not with respect to the position of the fielder at the time of contact.
It’s the Subsection b that they’re interpreting. The ump had the best angle to judge whether or not the ball was over first. It wasn’t a great angle, but it was better than the relay angle.
It’s like watching the NFL try to get replay angles on the goal line. You would think billionaires who make billions more off football would have relay angles set up directly on and over the goal line.
But no. They can’t get the simplest of ideas correct.
I would have asked for a replay on where the ball first made contact with the ground. If it was behind the front of the batter’s box, that ball is foul all day.
Not gonna link the article………………..
“I always tell guys there is a difference between activity and achievement,” OSU coach Pat Casey said. “Activity is shadow boxing. Achievement is knocking somebody out.”
Dear OSU football and men’s hoops programs,
You hear that?
Some co-workers of mine were debating whether to start Heimlich on Wednesday before the game. I mentioned that LH hasn’t looked sharp on short rest (<6 days) and odds aren't good when facing a team for the 2nd time (they've already seen his stuff).
At this point, I think Luke should be held until the Beavers can possibly make the finals. Fehmel starts Friday. If OSU wins, then probably Abel on Saturday. There are a lot of ifs in there, but LH might have decent rest by Monday. It seems that Casey/Yeskie have gone with a very short rotation/bullpen. Abel, Eisert, Pearce, Chamberlain, and Mullholland. Going to need a long start from a starter at some point.
Fehmel only went 4.0 innings on Monday and we need to be ready if he only goes 4 again on Friday. Eisert should be fresh for long relief by Friday after throwing 81 pitches last Saturday.
Abel should be good to go on Saturday after throwing 58 on Monday but I’m a little worried about our Saturday pen since Chamberlain threw 55 last night. Don’t want to have to use Mulholland for long relief on Saturday since he could be the only rested guy ready for Monday. We don’t want to put Heimlich back out on short rest again on Monday but we might have to.
Ideally I’d say:
Friday: Fehmel then Eisert then Mulholland
Saturday: Abel then Pearce then Chamberlain then Mulholland
Monday: A combo of Eisert/Mulholland/Chamberlain
Tuesday: Heimlich for 7+ innings and Abel to close
Wednesday if necessary: Fehmel then whoever can still feel their arm
right now Eisert, Pearce, and Gambrell are our most rested pitchers. We need to use all available rested arms at some point when our normal starting rotation are getting down to short rest. Rely on your strength and then rely on the rested pitchers. GO BEAVS!
What about Jordan Britton?
I like the lineup!!
What about Gambrell? Eisert should be well rested by tomorrow or for sure Saturday after throwing 81 pitches against UNC last Saturday. Pearce only threw 15 pitches against UNC so he’s very fresh at this point.
Gambrell should be thrown in this mix somewhere, but Ideally I’d say:
Friday: Eisert then Fehmel then Mulholland
Saturday: Pearce then Abel then Mulholland
Monday: Chamberlain then Eisert then Mulholland
Tuesday: Heimlich for 7+ innings and Abel to close
Wednesday if necessary: Fehmel then whoever can still feel their arm

Casey is such a class act. He didn’t throw Andy under the bus, nor did he put him down; he made a point to say, you as a player have the chance to learn by just playing the game and allows his players to make mistakes. That’s how you learn, by making mistakes. The way Casey phrased it by saying, “He’s still young, he’s still learning, but we had a good discussion afterwards about it.” He wants his players to play the game naturally and gives direction when needed. I see a lot of coaches out there that force their players to follow their every call and not deviate in any way or you’ll be benched. Bench for poor play, not bad decisions.
Thanks for posting, I heard the interview on radio but appreciate the chance to listen again.
Not only is Casey a class act as pointed out by beavers4life, but I have noticed all season how humble and team focused is Adley. All Casey’s players seem team oriented but Adley stands out in this area.
Adley learns it from his dad. Dadley
He’s become more then just Clutchman in my eyes and will now be officially referred to as Big Balls Adley. BBA for short
Being clutch is as good as it gets in sports. Consistently coming up big on the big stage is the dream and the goal. There’s no better compliment than to be considered clutch by your teammates.
I’d stick with Clutchman.
Eggers reports the Riley deal is official:
https://portlandtribune.com/pt/12-sports/399012-294028-riley-takes-san-antonio-football-job
So technically, if Smith brings him back as a partial year consultant, it will be tue 4th time OSU will have hired Riley(3 times after quitting on them) Would have to be some sort of record.
If a person keeps banging their head on a wall, do they eventually break through?
The wall or the skull?
You imply they’re mutually exclusive. Could be both!
Part of me wants to be stubborn and harbor some animosity, but honestly this has all worked out very nicely.
I don’t mind if he’s a consultant, especially if it’s mainly focused on QB’s (they still seem to love him) as long as he’s not really collecting a pay check.
Just glad he’s no longer on the coaching staff. If he helped get J.Smith the shot (I still think he’s worth the opportunity over 1/2 the coaches proposed,) and helped him feel more comfortable setting things up then I’m in a good place now with the program direction now.
JUST NEED TO LAND A FUCKING GAME CHANGING QB ALREADY!!!!
Riley hasn’t helped us land our QB yet….so now that we don’t have the “QB Whisperer” on staff, maybe now Riley won’t influence kids’ decision to look elsewhere. Is it possible that we’ve lost QB’s to other programs because of the notion that if you commit with OSU, you’re 100% committed and kids just aren’t willing to pull the trigger with that notion? I think we’ll get a project QB this season until we play a full season and show what offense this coaching staff will be running. I really feel this is what is holding us back from landing a game changing QB.
I have zero problem with him being an unpaid consultant, a “friend of the program,” if you will.
That’s a completely viable solution. so long as he does it on his dime and has zero responsibility at the end of the day.
HIP HIP HOORAY!
Well said!
“….didn’t want to abandon ship so quickly.”
“It just seems to get easier the more I do it! Plus I figure once the league folds OSU will take me back again, so there’s that.”
Good riddance. Wonder if a Smith sighed in relief when alone…
Beavs showed they are championship material by overcoming some pretty bad calls and their #1 starter imploding again.
Bryce will need to turn into big game Bryce again and save arms for a second game vs MSU.
Two unlucky swinging bunts and a bad call on the first base line…would have made his outing look a lot better. He wasn’t great, but those plays put runs across and extended his innings. We’ve seen him get into trouble before then settle in for solid games. I think those plays did him in.
It’s clear he couldn’t handle the big stage. There was no media scrutiny prior to the game, no protests, nothing. The best rise to the occasion on the biggest stages.
Adley is showing why he’ll be a top 5 pick with his leadership and production at the cws.
Heimlich not being able to handle the big stage is clear? He hasn’t had any big games over the last two years? It couldn’t possibly be that he just physically and mentally is exhausted? It couldn’t possibly be the constant turmoil punctuated by not getting drafted couldn’t be part of his struggles?
I think we should not pile on to a guy that has quite frankly handled a lot more pressure than I’ve ever been asked to and done so quite admirably. We would likely not be here without Luke and I feel awful for him.
These were the biggest games of his career and he didn’t show up in either. There are no excuses for the performances he had. Thompson had the same thing happen last year, couldn’t rise to the occasion after a great season.
Maybe with a strong performance he would have won over a few critics and maybe even a MLB GM.
Everyone goes through slumps, add on the weight of the world..
Meanwhile, ex-sister-in-law and BT might have the last say.
It is easy to money morning quarterback, but you aren’t in the dugout and you don’t know his mental state. He looked much better last night than the first game, bounces didn’t go his way. Being an elite athlete is not as easy as they make it look. The difference between elite pitching and hittable pitching at this level is literally inches.
Luke has nothing more to prove to MLB, he esd not passed over because of a question of his talent.
NBA draft tonight. Eubanks not expected to get drafted. He has been to a few tryouts with teams. Would expect him to get a training camp invite and be signed to the g league. If he wants money, he needs to go overseas.
It just doesn’t seem like he has a position in the NBA and anymore you got to shoot to play any position.
Fuck that dude.
MSU with strong coaching ties to Casey, OSU:

That kid should be suspended… after replay showed he was intentionally trying to injure someone.
Zero tolerance on that shit.
Have they ever announced where guys are playing summer ball?
Congrats to Coach Riley for being named Head Coach of the new San Antonio… to be named laters.
Fast forward to about March of 2020 when the franchisee folds because; 1.) They can’t afford to send the team on the road. 2.) The opponent is locked out of their stadium because they can’t pay the rent or. 3.) they can’t get their uniforms out of the laundry, due to lack of payment.
Riley… can’t see this train wreck coming???
I thought I read the NFL was going to keep the league propped up and used like a developmental league.
I haven’t found anything that says the NFL is funding it. It wouldn’t surprise me, given it looks like they’re forming it as one, an they would eventually sell (or announce equity holdings) to the NFL.
It’s a solid business plan. College ball is doing them no favors right now, except for throwing out freakish receivers. What good is that if you don’t have anyone to throw to them?
No NFL funding but the idea that the league won’t be able to pay its bills is absurd.
Its got plenty of financial backing and a sound business plan.
The business plan is perfect. I’m saying I wouldn’t be surprised to see current owners financing it through some back-channels. I wouldn’t think a non-compete would keep their family from investing in it.
Is anyone privy to that info?
Riley will be jobless and out of work in 2020, so it seems. Let’s start a GoFundMe to cover the cost of the welcome back to Corvallis banner, chewing gum, new bike, and roll-out the orange carpet. Welcome back Riley 2020!!!
It seems to me, now that Riley is gone officially, will people renew their season tickets now? At least, all those who didn’t renew or get season tickets because Riley was back?
They might as well wait until the season approaches, when some packs are thrown out.
All right, my baseball prediction sucked this year, but I DID call in to the JB show after the Riley re-rehire to go on record that he’ll bolt AGAIN at the first opportunity. And we’ll be pathetic enough to welcome him back. Again.
Canzano now questioning the Riley nice guy thing…lol. Took him two decades to figure it out!

You reckon he’s trying to get on our good side?
Looks like my Oregon State Athletic boycott will be shorter than I thought it was going to be.
Please let this be the last time we ever hire Riley again. I’m fine with Smith talking to him and getting advice, but no more official coaching positions for him. Ever.
Do you think this is actually the end of Riley re-re-re-rehirings?
Asking for a friend who has some oceanfront property in New Mexico for sale……cheap!
Depends. If the old fuddy-duddies who still think it’s the 90s are allowed anywhere near the hiring process for coaches again, then of course we’ll probably hire Riley again in the future.
If they’re finally ignored like they should’ve been since the start though, there may be some hope yet.
When I got the call from the Athletic Dept to renew my donation, I told the women straight out that I was not giving any money as long as Rilllley was employed. She seemed rather put off. Guess I can renew.
Hopefully you can speak with the same rep.
So Riley was reportedly working for a mere $80,000.00. Based on that he sucked about $47,000.00 out of OSU’s budget in the last seven months. Your contribution will go a long way toward reimbursing that waste. Cheers. JB
OT: From the “Small World” file,
My sister in law, a non baseball fan, just arrived from Gulfport, Mississippi. I showed her the video posted above of the “my wife’s boyfriend sold his leg….”
Her response?……..Hey, that guy comes into our vets office all the time, he’s always like that! Funny in a clean good humored way. No comment on whether or not he actually lives in a soon to be single wide trailer.
Oh man, I was stationed in Gulfpit, MS in the Navy. I met a totally hammered Brett Farve in a bar. He had just graduated from Southern Miss. If I had only known he would become Brett Farve, this Packer fan would have had him sign something.
Is that how he spelled it back then? Should have stuck with it.
Good catch! It’s how I spell it after a few very strong Belgian beers.
Remarks by Grenier, per Lundeberg:
““I knew I couldn’t give up the eight inches off the outside of the plate that (Sylvester) was giving,” … “You just adjust to that…”
Mississippi State is a Jekyl and Hyde kind of team. They are 11-5 against the top25, yet are 5-13 against the 26-50. Winning close low scoring one-run games is not their specialty — the Washington game being one of thirteen such games, they are a combined 7-6 overall. They’ve lost 4 games to teams ranked 100-200. This is very telling about their mid-week starters, their pitching will be suspect, as will the Beavers’. They will score a lot of runs if the Beavs get the kind of strike zone they had with UNC, but the Beavs should be able keep up as the Beavs have better batting average at almost every position. UNC had a better OBP percentage than MSU not by much, so look for MSU batters to be looking for just as many walks/ freebies. Beavs have better D over the season, but we’ve all seen the uncharacteristic errors in every game of the CWS. Expect the same kind of high scoring games if both teams are at their averages, with a bit of their current form.
9-6 flip a coin.

Hard to take the top 25 record seriously when almost your whole conference is automatically in the top 25.
OT drew ew not drafted, there’s a surprise
Beavs should land their 1st QB of the 2019 class this weekend. Not necessarily their last either. Nate Lamb will be on an official visit.
So, mr leaves THEN qbs commit? There’s a vote of confidence.
Not a surprise seeing as how OSU had a super solid 4* QB that bolted for Purdue as soon as Simple Jack hit the payroll.
Golly, round 3’s been swell but San Antonio calls! See ya, suck- errrrr I mean right place right time?
Miss St starter Billingsley has an ERA of about 6 over his last four starts so we could get on him. MSUs pen is hot though. Cole Gordon will probably come in next, he has thrown in almost all their postseason games and he could go 3 to 6 innings and 100 pitches. He’s a 6’5″ righty and I think the key is going to be how we can get to him, he’s given up 0 runs in his last 10+ innings over 4 appearances.
Reminds me of MSU back in 2013 CWS. Their starting pitching was horrendous, but somehow their bullpen decided to show up and knock the Beavs out. Could be similar to the last UNC game, look for Beav scoring in the first 3 innings, shut-down for 4 innings, followed by scoring in the later innings.
https://beaver.hypothetical.net/audio/joe-beaver-show_2484_20180621.mp3 This has clutch and grenier’s interviews, pretty good listen, plus DFT call in,
Beavs need fehmel to step up here. No starter has gone more than 4 innings. Need to get a quality start here to play tomorrow and let Abel start.
If Bryce can’t step up here, Abel will be the first out of the pen.
Gretler is not being Gretler.
