  1. Not even close to the end.

Program is positioned to hire a big time coach. Don’t have to settle for an up and comer from a small school.

Tcu coach may be looking to get out and would be a huge hire. He checked out miss St last year but went back to tcu.

  2. Thank you, Pat, for all you gave, and thank you Susan and the kids for all the Pat they gave…

I’m fine with another Pat for the transition.

  3. There are 3 possible guys that will be hired after next season.
Pat Bailey (If he wins in bunches, he’ll stay)
    Scott Brosius
Pat Casey (just needs a year in Margaritaville)

      • It will not be Scott Brosius. He wants to be a coach in the MLB where he is right now. Won’t come back to college.

Should check out Jim Schlossnagle at TCU. He may be available.

        • Casey will hand Bailey, his loyal asst. the keys to a potential Omaha team led by a potential POY, Adley R. The timing of the announcement assured this of happening. So if the team does well, the AD is pretty much forced to hire him permanently. Bo Ryan pulled this at Wisconsin with his b ball program. Hopefully this is OK with Yeskie.

        • Probably have to agree with Brosius. Once a big timer goes back to the big time, it’s hard to get him to let go. He seems to have a clear pathway to a managerial position on that level eventually. So I’m thinking his love for teaching the game doesn’t outweigh that goal.

I would also think Schlossnagle’s salary prevents him from going anywhere. If we were willing to pay that much, we could spend enough to entice Brosius’ love for teaching the game a lot more than I was thinking.

Dan McDonnell is priced out for the same reason. We’d have a better shot at someone like Monte Lee if it weren’t for his regional ties. Whatstheirnames at TTech and oSu are coaching their alma maters. Rodriguez at Baylor might need saving from Whacko. If we hired Vanderhook, does that mean we get stuck with Horton as an assistant?

Checketts followed up his unexpected CWS run with two lousy seasons. I hear Cliff Godwin’s name a lot in prospective searches. But neither of those two have managed to win their respective conferences.

I’ve always liked the approach of Machtolf’s teams. And I’d take a long look at lower conference coaches like Dan Heefner and Jeff Duncan.

  4. The odd thing in all of this is the interim tag followed by a national search. Pat Casey doesn’t retire without getting to hand pick his successor and ensure one of his loyal assistants gets the job. Pat is too loyal and stubborn to not protect his guys.

  5. Damn it. He’s only fucking 59. I wish he could have waited until this shitty football season was over, but I guess we may as well take the pain now. Luck O’ the Beavs.

  6. No reason for doom and gloom. Pat B won a national championship at George Fox and has been running the day to day practices. The interim title gives Pat C a chance to come back if he’s recharged by taking a year off or he may decide that he doesn’t need it.

    • Yes, but the interim title still puzzles me. Casey is/was the face of the organization, even though Bailey ran day to day, how does that NOT effect recruiting? “Hey, kid, the Beavs don’t even know who’ll be running the show when you get there”

Also, if Casey seriously plans to return it seems out of character to put Bailey in this situation.

As wannabeav pointed out, Barnes really stumbled with his answer to the question about “interim”.
I took it as Barnes just being a hack politician, but do wonder if there is more to it.

I keep coming back to Casey’s statement that, “I’m a coach”. If he ends up coaching coaches (as AD) maybe that is enough and he doesn’t return to being a HC. I can’t see him being happy if OSU expects him to only smooze and fund raise. I also don’t see him ever coaching at any other level than college ball.

Didja know: Unlike Casey, Bailey writes his own tweets? You can learn a lot about the guy by reading them. He’s solid.

  7. ONE OT, ONE NOT:

Per Bob Lundeberg: ” …I’ll be covering Oregon, Oregon State and prep sports as a freelancer for The Oregonian. VERY excited to be back at it as football season ramps up!”

Per Ben Wetzler: “Would be an absolute shame if it came down to a national search. That’s a family built program and should stay as such. Plenty of well groomed coaches right in house to lead the ship “

  8. “Interim”, “National Search”= Barnes and his past failures hitting OSU squarely in the face of the most successful program in the Athletic Department.

Someone commented that those words are code for Barne’s search firm buddies getting paid. If Baley, Yeskie, Canham, or even Casey are named coach after next year, the search firm concept is a complete scam of CYA politicians charading as AD’s.

A simple study of this site alone would give a fairly broad but useful list of names. Pick the best guy. I’m not convinced that the search for JS was anything more than window dressing. The money was wasted as if there was a search beyond the one candidate that had been decided long before-hand. Why would the baseball coaching situation be shrouded on some mystery when there are guys on the staff that would be hired by anybody in the country if they could convince them to leave OSU?

    • …code for Barne’s search firm buddies getting paid

I’ll buy that explanation for Barnes stumbling answer to the “interim” question. Follow the money.

  9. Some things I was thinking about last night after hearing the news:

    1. Casey has said that he regrets the way he coached his son Brett and maybe he didn’t fulfill his potential with his Dad as coach. Youngest son Joe has 2+ years left at OSU and seems ready to step into a role as everyday player. Maybe Pat wants to step away and let Joe have a chance to play for someone else for a bit?

    2. Had heard in the past that Casey always saw Andy Jenkins as his heir to the throne. If Bailey, Yeskie and Jenkins all stay on staff for this year and next, it will be a major coup for OSU in keeping the band together.

    3. Barnes announcing that the rightfield deck will be named “Casey’s Corner” seems underwhelming, hokey and not well thought out. The decision to honor Casey should be given more time to marinate and I hope they do something more meaningful than a plastic sign in a beer garden. (Unless he ends up coaching somewhere else like USC, then he’s choosing to forgo his legacy at OSU.)

At this point, I think most of us would be okay if they re-named Corvallis as “Caseyville”, assuming there aren’t any nefarious reasons for his retirement.

    • #3: Well, “underwhelming, hokey, not well thought out” kinda describes Barnes. (except that well though out may relate to the $ headed to his search firm friends)

Pat Casey Diamond in Goss Stadium at Coleman Field………hmmm

  10. Barnes needs to go before he screws it up.

Casey in the AD seat with JS, Rueck, Baley and Tinkle would be a long term competitive line-up of like-minded AD department leaders. I think it could be a great change for Casey to become the face of OSU and push for real cultural changes beyond the mediocre is ok mentality.

Tinkle may be on the hot seat this year, but I think they turn the corner this year. Talent is coming in, beyond the coaches kids. Prediction: Beavs are surprise team of PAC12 and make the tourney again.

Rueck is on the verge of his best squad yet. Now he has the floor leader, athleticism and shooting. It will be wide open run and shoot with lock down defenders. Great shot to win the National Championship for the gals in the next 2-3 years. Prediction: Beavs return to Final Four

Is JS the right guy? Maybe. I’m not yet convinced, but I like the staff, and willing to wait and see how things go. Hoping for 4 wins as a harbinger of things to come.

Baley is now set for a return to the CWS. Pitching will be lights out and talent will restock. Hopefully Adley is the stud next year with a surrounding cast to help him. No distractions this year like last year.

    • As much as people would like see Barnes go, he’s not going anywhere anytime soon. He signed a 6 year $850k deal last year. In comparison, Stansbury was only making $500k/year. Maybe we get lucky and Barnes schedules a few more bodybag games to pay his own buyout. Doh! :-)

  11. Truly a loss for OSU, but Coach Casey was an incredible coach, mentor and leadership (despite the final shot about Luke Heimlich had to be put into the article by John Canzano…the day that guy (whose parent’s misnamed him when they had space to put Richard on the birth certificate) has a moral failure, the karma train will hit hard…

But OSU will do fine with a new coach whether internal or outside, the culture to win is established.

  12. According to a parent that spoke with Bailey today, Bailey is the guy moving forward but the door is open for Casey to return if he desires. This was implied, not said directly. That would explain Barnes’ awkward answer regarding the interim tag and national search. I think the national search response was off the cuff but not a good response on his part.

  13. Anybody here ever used one of those powered drain augers to clean out a massive clog from you home’s plumbing?
Hell of a way to spend a Friday.

      • My guess is the same thing caused this clog. None of the chemical products could bust through it, but i think(hope) this auger fixed it up. So far so good. Crossing fingers it isn’t tree roots

    • I’ve broken a couple toilets in my day. It teaches one the value of easily accessible clean-outs.

It also teaches one that it’s sometimes easier to just remove the toilet altogether and reach into the drain to remove a clump of blech.

      • I put in one of those “it’ll flush a bucket of golf balls” crappers when I remodeled the bathroom. 99% of the time it’s better than sliced bread. In this instance the toilet flushed the wet wipes and they stopped up farther down the drain pipe. I had to run the rooter in to the wall under my kitchen sink since it was farther down stream.
