Canham with a decent series. 7-1 start looks highly probable.
Moving forward, if a baseball series ends on a Sunday, do you think Monday morning put up a general thread until the following Friday?
This week will stray from that with the Monday game and a Thursday game. Feel free to go general until then.
Dates and times:
Feb 25 (Thu) 5:00 PM Away Grand Canyon Phoenix, AZ
Feb 26 (Fri) 5:00 PM Away Grand Canyon Phoenix, AZ
Feb 27 (Sat) 1:00 PM Away Grand Canyon Phoenix, AZ
Feb 28 (Sun) 11:00 AM Away Grand Canyon Phoenix, AZ
GCU will livestream the series, link in comment #3 below
Let’s hope so but GCCC has a solid baseball program or at least used to.
7-1 looks highly probable ??
Not so fast, buddy. GCU took 3 of 4 vs Missouri. Tallied 9 runs/game, 3 errors in the series, had a three to one K:BB ratio.
I’d say 6-2 is more likely, 5-3 not out of the question (and not necessarily reason to throw in the towel either).
GO BEAVS
I didn’t realize they’re decent. With that name I just figured they’re not.
Interesting…Andy Stankiewicz their HC? 261–197 career record there. Had no idea. That guy is feisty as anything and has a lifetime of baseball under him so I’ll lower expectations to 6-2.
Beavs pitching coach Rich Dorman had the same role at GCU from ’17 thru ’19.
GCU is a private Christian University, kinda similar to George Fox, and we know what kind of wart laden coaches have come from Fox. :)
I think GC might have a few national championships under their belt too.
GCU will be livestreaming the series here:

Rad. Good find! Thx
Looks like GCU should be a good test for our pitching. They have some bats. I’m also assuming they’ve been able to play more in the preseason like KSU, which will probably help them early on.
Their Missouri series win is pretty good, but Missouri was also picked second to last in the SEC. I think a 3-1 weekend would be successful. 4-0 would be great. The biggest non-scoreboard thing to watch for will be if the bats can keep going.
I will be paying close attention to errors. I think that directly correlates to the coaching staff. Can Canham get them focused and playing sound fundamentally?
WBB:
Check Rueck’s twitter, says 3 hours after Aleah made that 3/4 court basket incoming commit Greta Kampschroeder did the same thing in her HS game.
Videos of both shots.
Golly, Neat Deal!!

With Katin Hauser pretty much off the board after receiving his UW offer today, my Burrito Gut is predicting the Beavs will next offer 2022 QB Carson May out of Oklahoma.
6’5″ pro-style QB.
Washington has a history of bringing in multiple highly ranked qbs in the same class. We might not be his first choice but could be his best opportunity for playing time.
He may like getting calls from the refs though and steer clear of the Beavs.
I don’t know if you saw it but my alternative to “Burrito Gut” was “Toothsayer” instead of “Soothsayer.”
I guess your predictions will depend on the quality and freshness of your burrito contents, and likely any salsas used…
I missed it. Damn power outage
Are you still out?
Got it back on day 5, after we had moved all of our fridge/freezer items into new temporary homes of course.
What kind of generator is needed for this type of situation?
It depends on how much power you’re going to be running. Most things don’t take much but if you’re going to run heaters, oven, toaster or anything that produces heat those use up a lot of power. I have a 2200 and it works fine for what I need. I would recommend Honda and then Yamaha for longevity and are usually quieter.
You just need to keep fridges and freezers going. It’s even easier if you have NG. You can heat and cook with NG and run cold stuff on a generator.
Cycling the generator makes your fuel last even longer.
May not need to be said, but just in case: If you use a generator to power any portion of the house you MUST have the proper installation which basically isolates you and your generator from the power grid. You don’t want to back feed generated power into the utility system…..could zap a lineman who is trying to restore power.
Oob, very true. They do make kits to hook directly to your distribution box and shut out power from the utility lines.
Thanks. We have NG…so cooking is just a matter of lighting the stove’s burner/pilot with a match?
BB, when you say heat, are you talking just food or a furnace? I didn’t think a NG furnace would work during a power outage.
You can also get fridges and freezers that run on NG or propane. I live off grid so I’m not hooked up to NG or power. I run my stove and a small fridge on propane and use solar for power. If I ever need I just switch a plugin from solar to my generator very easily.
I don’t know how practical it would be for any of you but if you have a large cooler you can use that too for food if you don’t think you’ll be out of power too long. I use a large one for a lot of my food and fully stocked with ice lasts about 4 days and that’s in maui so I would imagine you could go close to a week. Also if it’s cold enough you could probably build a natural outdoor cooler.
Angry, I’m talking NG stove for heat. some have fans that can be used with a 12v battery for back up in a power outage , and some don’t need electricity at all. Plus nothing beats hanging out with the lady next to a fire during a power outage.
Not sure where you all live but NG is likely to be out for an extended period of time in a large earthquake.
We were out for five days. We have gas for the fireplace, water heater, and stove, so we were good until my fireplace crapped out on day four and I couldn’t get the pilot reignited. My contractor friend lent us his generator for the fridges. He also took an extension cord and created another male end and ran it from the generator to an electrical outlet and it gave most of the house power at times. Of course, we turned off the main breaker, so we were bypassing the electrical grid. It worked, but I’m dubious because now it seems to have fried the outlet in the garage that we were using which I discovered after the power came back on.
We lucked into a smallish 120V, 3600w generator on day 2. It ran the fridges which probably paid for the generator several times. The extension cords are annoying. Day 7 or so, a contractor friend offered us his 7000w generator, after he got a bigger one, and hot wired it to our main breaker panel (master breaker was switched off, proper interlock would be code appropriate). Needed 220V to do this. This ran the heat pump, well, and lights, but not the water heater, which was a bit too much. Didn’t even try the oven or washer or dryer. The generators were loud, at least as loud as my push mower when standing next to it. They say ~70db at 7m, but I don’t know, they seemed as loud as the mower at 5m. Supposedly inverter generators are quieter but only go up to ~5000w.
Not many earthquakes in Colorado. I’m talking about heat during a power outage like we saw last week. NG will still flow once the powers out.
In oregon I would agree and say go propane.
You could call your predictions “gut bombs”.
I like it.
And then when the player ultimately flips from us to another team I’ll call it a Nut Shot.
Old Dominion and Western Michigan will be tough competition.
What does your Burrito Gut say about Jonah Coleman?
It says to consider that we didnt have a RB coach until a few days ago, and that new RB coach doesn’t have a relationship with Coleman and didnt even follow Coleman on twitter until AFTER Coleman announced he would be committing soon.
My gastric juices say don’t get your hopes up.
He has an “odd final 6,” very diverse programs spatially and in terms of their program status and performance.
D1 is putting less and less in front of their paywall, I see they have a review of the Beavs past weekend up today. Any subscribers here have a summary for the rest of us freeloaders?
And, non-D1, for free, here’s a short piece on Ben Holmes/Wetzler who stays tight with Logan Ice and Max Gordon:

Before tomorrow’s game with Cal, get caught up on the past weekend with the latest episode of The Payton Years! The only podcast in existence dedicated solely to Oregon State men’s basketball! This week Sam and Andy celebrate the Beaver’s a ascension to the middle class of the pac 12, do a little KenPom Pondering, and examine the defeatist attitude that plaguing Beaver Nation. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-payton-years/id1536831436?i=1000510099644
Thank you for posting your podcast. OSU basketball is fairly irrelevant due to years of mediocrity, so it’s nice to hear someone at least discussing it. I’m not so inclined to hypothesize on the psychology of Beav hoops fans having a defeatist attitude when the empirical evidence suggests the program is stuck in the proverbial mud. How long do you think Tinkle deserves to put a consistent NCAA or even NIT team on the court?
The Beavs will go 2-2.
And I won’t throw in the towel, at least not solely due to going 2-2.
OT: This article talks about Tom Brady’s accomplishments and records. I like the chart that shows the history of each franchise and their superbowl wins/losses.
https://www.usatoday.com/in-depth/sports/nfl/columnist/nate-davis/2021/01/31/tom-brady-records-super-bowl-buccaneers-patriots/4294526001/
Brady is proof to me how important leadership is. Football is a dumb game, in order to be the best you have to sacrifice your future health and play as physically as possible. Brady inspires his teammates to run through walls… that to me is his most impressive trait. From a pure QB perspective he isn’t the GOAT, factoring in leadership puts him to GOAT status. Even things like taking a few million less are huge… I mean a bit of cap savings but it encourages every other guy to settle for a bit less too.
The whole Belichick vs Brady debate is dumb though. Of course the Pats are bad, they mortgaged their future to win in Brady’s twilight. They were planning on him being retired and rebuilding by now so when Brady stuck around they had few picks to work with. The Patriots dynasty was both guys. Brady never would have had 2 decades of elite D behind him in NE without the absolutely savage personnel moves by Belichick. He never got guys paid for past performances, if you had a big year and were likely to see decline some other team was paying them big money.
“…sacrifice your future health and play as physically as possible. “
It seems to me Brady is very disciplined in trying to maximize his long term health, at least those factors he can control: diet, exercise, probably quick to throw ball and reduce sack potential. Throw in a generous dose of good fortune so far. Don’t think he’s ever had a serious injury(?).
He’s been hurt once or twice for the season. Matt Cassell took over.
He got taken out at the knee. Now it’s a penalty to hit the QBs below the knee.
Oh he doesn’t necessarily have to put his body on the line himself, he just inspires the team to do that is what I meant.
GC is good. Return 8 of 9 position players and solid rotation. Lost some power from last year’s squad but they can hit and pitch. Picked to win their conference. They lack a true ace but have 5-6 decent arms that can start. I expect close games… we’ll need to score some runs to win. If I had to wager, I’d bet on a split but optimistic we can squeak out 3-1 series win. If we go 4-0, that would be a big accomplishment early in season
Noticed several recruits have been receiving little graphics from the OSU coaches about the bells and whistles of the Valley Center players lounge.
Made me think, some school needs to develop a virtual(or real) champagne room to add to their player facilities. A barber chair is neat and all, but a lapdance would really bring the recruits in. Who says no?
Partnership with Acropolis? Mary’s if they want to save a few bucks?
I can offer up my extra basement space as a test environment, if they need it. Would be convenient since I live only a couple of miles from Acrop.
I remember the acropolis! Its been a long time and I had no idea it was still open. You could get a mediocre steak and eggs breakfast with a bloody mary for about 10 bucks at one time. I believe it would be a strong recruitment tool. Great idea though i think you might have a hard time convincing coach Smith.
I’m right there with you. In fact, a buddy of mine and I came up with a pretty novel idea several months ago…..stripper poles….throughout the stadium. I think that would bring in a lot more fans and ticket sales would be off the hook. LOL
Did I hear right, that Casey already has 3 HR through 5 games?
Michael Conforto 2.0?
I guess more like 4.25 games rather than 5
If he doesn’t homer, he strikes out.
Shit, Oscar da Silva is out against the Quacks tonight. I’m sure he will be fully recovered and go for 30/10 against the Beavs on Saturday. I would love to see the Quacks miss the tourney.
after loading the bases in the B5 with no outs, Abel strikeout the side to end the threat. Beavs up 1-0 after 5.
Abel with 11 K’s so far. Nice.
And 3 HBP, not nice, he gone.
Abel finishes the night with 11 Ks after 5 innings.
Wow, pretty professional broadcast for a college stream. I’ve heard this university has some money. Nice basketball arena also.
All that sweet, sweet, online student money. Margins are good when 70% of your students are online.
Beavers up 4-0 after Kyler McMahon and Melton deliver with 2 outs. Kyler delivered on an 0-2 count w/bases loaded and two outs.
Beavers pitching staff has K’d 14 GC batters and 3 hits.
4-0 after 7.5 innings….the good guys getting it done again. So far it looks like Casey’s solo HR will be the winner if the Beavers pen can shut them out the remaining 6 batters.
Beaver hoops looking like crap against Cal so far. Down 26-16 with about six minutes left in the first half. Cal is shooting 71%.
4-0 T9 Beavers staff have K’d 16 batters. Beavers have K’d 11 times but have 8 hits.
Winner winner, chicken dinner…..Casey’s solo dinger makes Kevin Abel a winner.
Weird hoops game. Beavs now up 45-41 with nine minutes left. No three-pointers yet, only one by Cal.
Nice win for the baseball squad. Picture quality from the feed was outstanding and no Jon Warren. Win, win!
Does Ethan T dribble the ball off his foot in the last two minutes of every game? And….adds another offensive foul for good measure.
Yes, statistical analysis shows that he does.
Wow, what horrible basketball by both teams in the last two minutes. Cal out shitty’d us, so Beav’s win.
Beavs try to lose it down the stretch, but somehow win 59-57 as Matt Bradley loses the ball going for the last shot. Two-win day for Beav sports.
I’ll be shocked if they win any more games.
Currently 6th in the standings and would face Cal again in the PAC-12 tournament. You can expect a drop after 3 straight losses to end the season. Probably going to face Utah or Arizona St in the 8/9 matchup.
Also, Arizona is not eligible for the postseason so only the top 3 seeds get a bye this year.
I don’t really see any playmakers on this team. Just a bunch of role players and one trick ponies.
But Stinkle is building something. It’s called mediocrity.
Tinks had his chance a few years back and didn’t produce anything but mediocrity. I didn’t realize he had FOUR Top 100 players on his squad at one point with McLaughlin, Lil’Tinks, and the Thompson Twins. That’s not going to come around again.
Kind of funny that McLoughlin is going to win another conference title and end up experiencing the most college success out of that group.
I had forgotten he was a Top 100 player too. Shit, there are over 300 D-1 teams and Tinks had four Top 100 players!
“I’ll be shocked if they win any more games”
And the Beavers just tinkled all over this comment and beat Stanford a day later.
Silva has big game for beavers….i couldn’t figure out why they didn’t go back inside to Silvs in the last 1:30 bc he was unguardable inside the paint in the second half due to his length.
He’s not a bad foul shooter either. I don’t know, what was that last play with Lucas dribbling around the perimeter and then taking a low percentage shot? Was Tinks hoping he would get fouled? I thought for sure that Bradley was going to hit the game winning three.
Me too about Bradley….it seems to me you go with what works until the other team proves they can stop it and they never proved they could stop Silva. Head scratcher but a win is a win….
It’s called tinkle ball.
So we’re back to firing Tinkle?
Isn’t the back and forth a sign he’s never going to be the answer?
Like Whiskey said, mediocrity. That’s the ceiling
How long did CR get? Six years? Is this Tink’s 7th season? I guess with COVID, I would give him next year to make the tourney or the NIT. Seems like 8 years is generous for building a consistently competitive program (20 wins, above .500 in league play).
8 years? I don’t know…I view it like a girl…you know pretty early on if she’s good or you’re just ignoring the problems to delay the inevitable.
Tinkle should have been gone long ago.
I’ve heard Ethan’s not coming back, so “Coaches Son-Ball” will be over. If Tinks loses out the rest of the way and they finish 12-15, seems like the time is right. I know he will say that the team was predicted to finish last, so they overachieved. Then you get into the cost of a buyout.
8 years in a sport where you can turn a program around in 1-2 years is way too long. It’s clear by now the NCAA tourney year was a product of circumstance and not any brilliance on Tinkle’s part.
That was all Payton, no? And wasn’t he a CR recruit?
Yeah, but the core from the following years was there, too (Coaches’ Kids and Eubanks). The next year, Tres got hurt and there was no one to pick up the rebounding slack from GP3, so we ended up with the awful 16-17 season that killed the program’s momentum.
Rebounding is the easiest part of the game, and is 90% will. I remember those teams would stand around and watch …sure sign of poor coaching
The biggest alarming concern for me is player development. If you can’t make players better individually and bring them together to be a solid team, then when will there ever be success? We aren’t Duke, UNC, etc where you get already great talent. Even those programs struggle some with talent not coming together. The amount of players staying the same skill wise and/or leaving the program is alarming. The advantage should be the core of the team staying together since none will be leaving after 1 or 2 years for the draft and yet the two most experienced players are very inconsistent with their contributions (Thompson and Reichle). Some of that I blame on Thompson playing out of position. So, my answer is get a new coach. I’ve heard Tinkle shows some good stuff in practices but doesn’t use it in games. It’s head scratching the times when the offenses doesn’t look like it has a plan. Miss the shots, sure. But have an offense. Watch the women’s team. They run the offense and make the pass. The players don’t always make the shot. But you can see there is a plan!!!!!!!!!!
And to illustrate your point, Reichle has now regressed, just like Hollins did earlier.
The better question is why keep him? His average conference finish is 7.8. Even if you toss out his highest finish (4th) and the year they lost Tres and finished dead last, that average only improves to 7.75.
So why is OSU paying a guy millions of dollars to an average 8th place finish on a consistent basis???
Any other power conference school that gets you fired.
Just to get on the NIT bubble this team is gonna have to win these last 3 regular season games and win at least 2 in the conference tournament.
Anyone here confident Stinkle can pull that rabbit out of his ass?
Didn’t think so.
Is there another Power Five MBB example of a seven-year tenured HC with an overall .500 record currently? I don’t think it says much about OSU’s MBB aspirations that this is allowed to begin with. There’s not even hot seat conversation that I can tell. Maybe it starts next year with it being the final year of his contract (I think)? Barnes should come out and say what improvement he expects.
I see two possibilities. Either the buyout is protecting Tinkle, or Barnes is just accepting mediocrity at this point.
Do we have evidence Barnes isn’t the type of guy to settle for “good enough”? None of his coaching moves around the major sports have been ballsy high-risk, high-reward calls. He’s basically just hired alumni that will get donors excited because of their glory days on the field, or “safe choices” like Tinkle.
Does this mean Teo Alibegovic will be our next coach?
According to Wikipedia, he’s available!
Are you joking? He actually did some coaching in Europe! His nephew is that star player at Iowa, Luka Garza.
He was the first OSU player I remember from watching Far West Classic games as a little Nicebeaver. I credit him with being the reason I ever started my path towards being an OSU alum.
So if he becomes our coach, my OSU sports fandom will have come full circle.
Does that mean you’ll be released from the spell and you can move on to something happier?
I have a hunch that all the folks who want to see Tinks gone are going to be disappointed.
If you think he will suddenly have an improved trajectory, then how so?
We usually finish in the middle of the pac 12. There has been 1 season at last place under Tinkle.
Tinkle did make a change last year hiring Marlon Stewart as assistant coach. Since then recruiting has been trending up. I would prefer to see if we can go mediocre to good in the next year than starting over.
Not so much that he’ll suddenly become great — just the contract issues plus my perception that he (or his staff) seems to have done a reasonable job of getting a bunch of new people to jell over the course of the season. Enough so that he’ll probably be back next year.
He has another season on his deal. I fully expect he’ll work through the end of that, but I would be shocked if he’s retained unless they somehow manage to make the tournament next year. Ok, let’s be honest: the NIT.
Are we going to go from perrenial 11th or 12th place finishes to 13th?
Hard to be more disappointed than we are now
I think his average league finish is 7th or 8th. I will give him this: things could be worse. We experienced that during the JJ era (and several years prior.)
It’s the consistent mediocrity with no reason to hope that’s disappointing.
Disappointed because we can’t do any better or disappointed because Tinks will be kept around too long? I just want someone that can coach. Tinks and CR were both good at running a program and shaping young men into good citizens… they just sucked at everything else and never hired real great player development or X and Os guys. Really both seemed in denial of their personal shortcomings.
I think they mean just disappointed in general, same as the folks who don’t want to see him gone. You know, just general Beaver disappointment.
So basically beaver fans gonna beaver fan
I was going to say that he does seem to be well-liked in league circles. To hear Bill Walton tell it, Tinkle-coached teams are apparently fighting for first place every season! I don’t even excuse his 5-27 season, because what was the plan without Lil’ Tinks? Teams rise up all the time when a key player gets injured. His team melted down.
Probably both.
Comment for (Ean)
Game 2 lineup: I like Preston Jones leading off, a little surprised Andy Armstrong is still batting ninth eventhough his performance so far makes that understandable. Hamilton catching and Claunch batting cleanup playing 1B. “Home Run Casey” batting 5th.
A little soon to judge, but if Claunch isn’t gonna catch, wouldn’t DH be a better place? Not sure I like his D at 1B.
GCU pitcher getting getting the calls from the ump so far.
Probably need to be a little more aggressive at the plate.
Arizona, screw masks? At least it looks like they are social distancing. Probably no worse than the college hoops coaches who wear the mask BELOW their noses half the game!
Their cardboard cutouts are too close to each other.
It was weird seeing an in-person interview with no masks.
Refreshing
Hjerpe is getting a pretty tight strike zone.
GCU pitcher is legit.
Same with their guy last night.
Yup. Good team.
19-22 first pitch strikes and 77% strikes through the first 6 innings. Beavers have just 2 hits and down 1-0 middle of 7. Hjerpe pitching a gem too with a 2 hitter and a few walks but no offensive support.
Mundt shuts the door in the 7th but did give up a two-out double. T8 and Beavers have got to get their bats going. 2 freaking hits in 7 innings….that’s not going to cut it.
Beavers leave Melton at 3rd base….still down 1-zip. B8
Last opportunity for the Beavers…..T9. Beavers pitching is going to keep them in a lot of games, but if their lineup can’t produce at the plate….well, it’s going to be a tough season.
Casey delivers a 2-run double with 2-out in the T9. Beavs 2-1 still batting.
Casey at the bat!!!
Count on Casey! 2 RBI double!
Did the announcer just say “big boy pants”….awwwwww….triggered!
Oh yeah…
Announcers trippin over themselves to praise the beavs now after they said their offense “wasn’t dynamic” earlier in the game lol
I like the production values of the stream more than the announcers, they are all over the place and over-dramatic.
Kate ain’t bad
Fox 10 plus?
Good one!
Need the ‘18-19 Jake M.
Looked good in the 9th. 1-2-3….Beavers win again. Nice start to the season at 5-1!
That was a great game. GCU has very good team.
Their starting pitcher was lights out. Hjerpe wasn’t too bad either. Beavers quality pitching depth should be advantage this season…i wish we had a little more pop and power in the lineup though.
Agree. Their starter tonight was dealing. I was impressed with our approach even though we didn’t score on him. Scrapped for couple base hits and finally got to bullpen. Then great at bats in 9th led to some clutch hits. Defense was good again although I expect they’ll get better as the season progresses. GCU is good. Would be a mid level team in SEC or Pac-12.
I think we got him!
McMahon comes thru with a run scoring, two out single. 3-1. Mulholland closes the door in the 9th. 3-1 Beavers!
Great win tonight to come back in the 9th! Go Beavs!
WHAT HAVE WE LEARNED ABOUT RICH DORMAN?
Do y’all agree that the Beavs have faced 3 outstanding starting pitchers in the first 6 games? There should be little doubt about the kid from K-State but, maybe, some argument over the two antelopes.
Anyway, it strikes me that both the antelope arms were at the school while Rich Dorman was the pitching coach there.
Does this convince you that Rich is just what the Beavs need? A coach that develops and, likely, recruits very well? Or are ya disappointed that he didn’t have a “book” on those two guys, a sufficient knowledge of their approach to help Beav hitters?
How about Rich’s use of the Beav staff, has he been smart to use so little of Mulholland? Did he leave Abel in too long in the game vs K-State?
Sure, it’s a small sample, but I think he is gonna be OK. I really didn’t expect yesterdays pitcher to be so tough, looking forward to seeing what the ‘lopes have for today.
Oh, and can we say that Joe Casey is responsible for half the Beavs wins so far? Naw, not really.
Dorman had decent MILB numbers as a pitcher. I’m surprised he never made it to the majors.
As a coach, he seems okay so far.
I haven’t watched more than maybe 1 full game worth of innings so far, but the pitching has been really solid in what I’ve seen so far. It seems we have a deeper bullpen this season than with some of the Casey/Yeskie staffs. Is that your impression too? We haven’t been leaving the starter in for extra innings after they wear down, and there hasn’t been much of a drop off when the starter leaves the game.
Also, it helps to have Abel back another year. If he hadnt been injured the past 2 season, he wouldn’t be playing for the Beavs this year. And his rehab from TJ surgery seems to have gone well so far. Nice to have a bonus ace to put out there.
I’d hate being a pitcher, having your career depend so much on that arm’s health. My cousin who played for oregon and current is in the diamondbacks minor league system just had his second TJ surgery this winter. First was during highschool. The rehab process is grueling
Sorry to hear about him having those issues…all surgery sucks and wish it on nobody. TJ does seem especially brutal in terms of sports injuries.
He’s a mentally tough guy and will get through it. Just sucks for his career years though to be on the shelf so much. He was on his way to AA ball after playing single A short and Single A a couple of seasons, but got sidetracked by back to back injuries, TJ being the latest development.
To be a high-level pitcher is sort of a “deal with the devil”. Throwing a ball 90 miles an hour overhand is not a natural motion. Some strain is inevitable, those unlucky have more serious issues.
Ask that question AFTER the 3 games against Arizona.
Even then it will still be debated for years
Our football team’s recruiting sure seems like it’s on life support lately. There’s been so little buzz, even compared what I’ve come to consider “normal” the last 5-6 years.
Kids are releasing top ___ lists and the Beavs are almost never mentioned. The one time we do get mentioned is Jonah Coleman, who is only putting us in there because we’re a Pac12 offer, so it looks good(I guess) but he’s not coming here.
Then there’s the transfer portal, which fans generally think is OSU’s secret weapon. But it just isn’t like that, especially anymore. Sure, we did ok when OSU snagged several Nebraska players. But that was more related to our connections to those players from the Nebraska recruiting days and guys not meshing with Scott Frost. Bottom line is OSU doesn’t get talent upgrades via the portal anymore than maybe the occasional guy like Makiya Tongue. And that’s because of a legacy connection moreso than recruiting.(thanks Pettibone)
Bottom line, Oregon State needs to kick things up several notches because right now they’re getting lapped by the rest of the Pac12.
What are the primary causes for it being below normal? I’m sure the lack of winning seasons is problematic, but there’s also opportunity to play early. Smith and staff just not resonating with kids? Lack of effort?
Pitre was far and away the top recruiter, right? Who do we have left? Bray? Cookus is good at getting in-state PWO’s.
Our recruiting didnt have to be very good last cycle since we were only signing a class of around 12-13 guys. And 1 was a mission returner, and the 2 best recruits in the class were either in state(and couldnt play for oregon by ncaa rule) or a family connection.
But this year we need to have a larger class, and i just dont see much progress. Maybe it’s just too early, but with classes basically being completed in December now, it’s pretty concerning that we dont have a single verbal commitment yet and we’re still chasing quarterbacks
They’ve had quite a few transfers and not much in return for this class. Still waiting on a solid DL.
We really didn’t lose any meaningful production in the transfer portal.
Right but ideally you would hope they get equal pr better talent. The transfers that they’ve gotten is along that line but just haven’t gotten enough.
Whatever happened to beasons brother?
Lineup is posted; Casey hitting 3rd, Armstrong sixth, Jones remains at leadoff. Kyle Dernedde playing 2b hitting ninth.

Wow a lot of shakeup. Is canham trying to still figure out who is going to play and bat where or what?
I guess that’s what preseason is for?
First time I’ve had time to watch this series. Impressive GCU has a live stream and on YT. Well, everyone should have been doing this ten years ago, but impressive in the sense they actually made it happen.
It’s pretty disappointing that they can do it and not us with our 3 championships.
It shouldn’t cost a lot. Put a GoPro ($300?) up and stream it on YT (free).
Though, I guess we do have it for our home games. OSU should bring a GoPro on the road and stream the series like the one in Surprize, AZ.
I was mentioning how professional it was yesterday. It is affiliated with the local Fox station? They mentioned Fox-plus and they have actual commercials, so they must be selling ad slots.
0-0 T5. From what I’ve seen it two games, there’s really no one in the Beaver’s lineup that would scare me if I was an opposing pitcher. Pfenning is pitching a no-hit game so far….well, that just ended in B5. T6 0-0.
What about Joe Casey? :D
Casey?…….the only Left handed hitter in the Beavs lineup today.
hitting .286
Why did GCU take out their starter? What was his pitch count?
70
I guess early in the year that makes sense.
Bases loaded walk gives the beavs a 1-0 lead
And Armstrong scores on a wild pitch to make it 2-0
Casey pegged with the bases loaded to make it 3-0
Count on Casey, willing to take one for the team!
Claunch with a 2 run single makes it 5-0 as the beaver half of the 6th ends
My 4-0 prediction looking pretty good. Beavs are way better than these guys.
I was able to watch the first two games and would not say way better, those first two ‘lope arms made things look kinda close.
Now that we are past the first two games I’ll agree with the 4-0 prediction looking good.
I wouldn’t say way better but the Beavers have been getting some timely hits. GC pitching has been solid so that’s where I think GC is a little closer to the Beavers…..at the plate, not so much thougn.
Beavers must have heard me…..they put up 5 runs in the 6th and lead 5-zippo. Big hit was a 2-run single by Claunch on a two strike count.
Little bit of danger for Pfennings in the B6 with two runners on but he K’s the hitter to get the 3rd out. Beavs up T7, 5-zippo!
better clarify….GC starting pitching has been very good….bullpen not so much.
Yabthe key so far in the is series has been seeing a lotbof pitches and getting into their bullpen.
5-0 T8. Hunter makes short work of GC in the B7th.
Bases loaded 1 out T8 and Claunch hits into an inning ending DP. Third DP Beavers have hit into today and second one w/bases loaded (I think).
It’s been a while since I’ve watched much OSU baseball, but wasn’t Casey’s strategy usually to bunt the guy over in that situation?
4 consecutive hits off Hunter, 5-2. They should have pulled Hunter after the 3rd hit but waited too long. Now pulling him with runners on 1 and 2 with 1 out B8.
Watkins comes in and closes the door with runners on….5-2 Beavers T9.
Armstrong double drives in McMahon to make it 6-2
B-to-B doubles in the T9th Beavs runners on 1st and 3rd up 6-2.
Ober RBI single makes it 8-2
Followed by a Casey RBI double, 9-2
Beavers score 4 more in T9 and now lead 9-2 going into B9th.
how do you “salvage” your third win in a 4 game series when you’re up 2-0 to start with?
Beavers win 9-2 now 6-1 on the season.
In addition to being picked to win the conference, GCU also has the preseason POY pick, who we’ve held to 1-7 so far this series.
Who is that?
Colato, the 2B. He didn’t start today.
MBBeavs with a nice road win at Stanford. Inching closer to that first round bye…
Lucas went off for 26 and we won the rebound battle. Those seem to be our two keys to victory this year. We really don’t have anyone else that can fill it up opposite ET’s 10-12 points and we don’t score enough period to win without winning in most other categories.
Now do we want to keep Tinkle?
Stanford was without their best player, so one could say at least the Beavs took advantage of the gift that was given to them. I will be more impressed if they win that weird middle of the week road game against Utah. Not sure they can handle a healthy Quack squad.
Nope! But this season has given me hope he won’t drive the program into the ground. What I am worried about is his reliance on transfers and JC players. We don’t have many HS recruits on the roster after next year. We’ll be mediocre to average the next few seasons and hopefully allow Tinkle to walk.
Still a pass for me.
While yesterday was a good win, keep in mind Stanford was without Oscar Da Silva. He torched the Beavs for 31 points in Corvallis in January.
Stinkle’s conference winning percentage doesn’t lie.
At this point he is what he is. And IMO that isn’t good enough.
Beavs baseball is good
It’s a good start. Schedule is favorable to them early. Only out of state road trip is to uw until mid april.. The rest of the games are in the state of oregon. That road trip will be a test, uc irvine, loyala and ucla.
We will find out just how good when they start conference play. Their pitching depth is very strong and they play solid defense. My only concern is offensive production….if this team develops some consistent contact guys, they couldn’t make a run at the conference title but that’s a big if right now. So far, so good and just keep putting up w’s.
I figured this season wouldn’t “count” against Tinkle in any regard – but it is nice to see the team pick up some wins. I still think the program has a very modest ceiling, perhaps it would be that way for any coach. The program is respectable, but I can see fan interest waning as they realize this is as good as its going to get – somewhere between 7-11 and 10-8 in conference. Win a game they shouldn’t, lose two games they shouldn’t.
And btw – the last four-star Beaver recruit Jack Wilson has left the Idaho program after being used sparingly avg. less than 2 points and 2 rebounds a game this year.
I think the local media like Big Tinks also. There is a lot of extolling the virtues of current mediocre performance over crappier season of the past. The latest stat being hyped is something about him having the only nine-win plus conference seasons in the past 30 years. I remember when CR was padding the wins via the CBI tourney there was a lot of that going on also.
I think attendance could become a barometer for Tinkle once things are back to normal.
Did you see yesterday’s headline from the win in the Boregonian?
Something about this being only the 2nd conference road sweep since 2009 or so?
The other was in 2019 at Utah and Colorado.
Look, you should be able to get a conference road sweep at least once every 3 years. I don’t care who you are.
That’s not an accomplishment. It’s pathetic the bar has been set that low.
This^^^^
Not to mention Tinkle has been head coach since 2014, so most of that ineptitude is on his watch. We are supposed to give him credit for sucking slightly less than he sucked in the past.
The worst offense of the Tinkle era is that his son is now the program’s all-time leading scorer, ahead of some guy named Gary Payton. This fact absolutely kills me.
OT: I forgot FCS was playing football. OK, I didn’t care, but I still forgot.

Meckler double drives in the first run of the day 1-0 Beavs T2
Is this their budget broadcast today? I’m not seeing any graphics (ball/strikes, score).
Looks like they got it figured out. Seeing it now in the 3rd inning.
GCU ties it up in the 3rd, 1-1 T4
GCU takes the lead, 2-1 T7
Sloppy baserunning in the T7, still think the Beavs are WAY better angry?
Armstrong solo he ties it up!
HR
Andy Armstrong with a home run ties it at 2!
Melton double drives in Meckler to give the beavs a 3-2 lead
Gretler doing some Golden Glove work at 3rd in B8. Steals at least two hits away from GC.
Claunch with his first Launch of the year 4-2 Beavs T9
Mulholland come in to close it out, I like his chances.
Claunch solo shot, 4-2 Beavs B9th.
Mulholland does close it out on 9 pitches with big assists from Armstrong.
Beav Win 4-2
Angry, congrats….you called it. Winner, winner, chicken dinner. Beavers 4-2 and now 7-1. Great pitching, timely hitting, and solid defense. Up next….jack up the BYU Mormons…I mean Cougars!.
Something tells me A@A won’t show up muttering about my “bad predictions”……
Apparently, he’s hiding in the shadows, that was a quick downvote!
Hows that gold recommendation working out?
Lol. Great. I recommended gold at $1050-1100, literally at the bottom of the last bear market. It’s up nearly 80% since the recommendation. Lolol.
I have no idea what you’re talking about. Nobody listens to Jerome Powell about inflation unless it’s to laugh.
But anyway, gold is doing exactly what you’d expect given interest rates went up and bitcoin is getting its flow. It’s consolidating right at major support. Huge nothing burger setting up for the next breakout later this year.
Why are five different usernames posting from this IP?
And yes, I’m deleting your lies. A quick search shows my gold recommendations were March through June of 2019.
Probably that Beavblows character. Can somebody you’ve banned still downvote comments? I’ve noticed that whenever Swammi posts he gets an immediate downvote. So mature.
No, it’s someone who’s usually okay (Doozeldorf)…but he’s using 4 other names.
I’m Dooz, Gobeavs92, Dwill03, and Issaquahbeav.
Why do people who are seemingly normal lose their minds over the strangest things? This guy is so upset I predicted a 4-0 series and nailed gold that he’s outing his five personalities. Does anyone remember his multiple personalities being this nuts? I don’t.
via GIPHY
Lol you even said yourself you knew nothing about GCU and assumed they’re a bad program (they aren’t). Great sweep. Lucky call on your part and admittedly a shot in the dark on your part.
“I didn’t realize they’re decent. With that name I just figured they’re not.”
Yah great analysis and prediction there, sport.
WBB ahead of the Quacks 38-35 at the half despite some questionable officiating that has put Taylor Jones in foul trouble. This game seems like a must for any tourney hopes unless they make it to the finals of the P-12 tournament.
Corosdale 3/3 from 3 pt, 2 RB’s
Where’s that douchebag that said the WBB season was over in January? Just took it to the Ducks on the road.
Tournament clinching win for the ladies, regardless of what happens in the Pac-12 tournament.
Same a-hole who downvoted me above. WBB does it in style despite Jones having to sit half of the game! Perfect Beav weekend for baseball, MBB, and WBB!
Where’s that rascal who diss’ed Corosdale? 33 minutes, 4/5 3pt, 14 pts
Team=96% on FT’s, (nike 85%)
Lead for over 35 minutes, a nice 11 pt victory.
88 points is the most given up all year by Oregon.
Women’s soccer also beat #3 and defending Champs, Stanford this afternoon.
Great day to be a Beaver.
OSU Wrestling has 5 athletes competing in PAC 12 championship matches and I believe a couple others wrestling for 3/4 starting at 6:00 PM. Currently sitting in second behind ASU going into 1/2 and 3/4 matches for the PAC 12 Championship.
Awesome to see the boys competing hard and encourage fellow wrestling fans to tune in!
Thorn to ASU
Rose to Coach Pendleton and his Staff
Go Beavs!
Thats great news. Sounds like the new coach has got them wrestling tough. A great day to be a beaver.
Was Nike playing at full strength in WBB? I don’t follow WBB that closely, but I’m pretty impressed we were able to win by double digits on the road. Seems to bode well for tourney hopes.
Their starting PG, Paopao, didn’t play.
As far as the tournament is concerned, I don’t see any reason why they aren’t in now. Oregon was #7 in NET so that road win was huge. We’re 36th currently and this win should move them into the low 30s.
I don’t get the net ranking thing. Oregon hasn’t beat a ranked team all season. Their best win was against the Beavs. How is their net ranking so high? Is this another case of you start the season rankled high (Norte dame and Texas in football every year) and then you lose some games but you are still ranked because of where you started not because you beat anybody? Sounds like a likely rematch in the conference tourney. Corosdale offensively played very well. Big addition in the grad transfer of Mack. She does a little bit of everything.
There must be something wrong with the IP function. A@A is coming up as OldBeav now.
Yeah, there is something wrong because it certainly wasn’t me inquiring about your gold recommendation earlier.
Imagine being this obsessed about anything
Seriously. He used a VPN to downvote me 22 times and counting.
Maybe if he didn’t delete / edit posts and engaged in actual dialog based on facts crap like this would not happen.
Mark Campbell here to exact his revenge!
Dude, you need help and should seek some professional help for an extended period of time.
Yah he’s losing it. Can’t recover from 149 downvotes
