The ASU series went as expected for me with the Beavs going 2-1. Acceptable, but ideally you don’t like feast or famine from an offense. Law of averages, I guess. They’re averaging 9.8 runs per game, but I’d like to see that average attained more consistently rather than boom and bust.
Is there any reason, other than Mitch ;), we shouldn’t win the next four games?
3-1 works for me. Regarding offense, it’s pretty consistent if you look at the scores game by game… last game of asu was the outlier
5 or more runs in 16 of 18 games.
I want to see a closer make the close in the next four games. Give me some close games where the bullpen has to perform on a pressure situation. 3-1 Is expected but more interested about problem solving for the long run. I know some of it is injuries.
Yes that would be nice. We’d be 17-1 with a closer
They should of swept both pac 12 series so far, losing games to the bottom feeders of the conference is going to come back and bite them in the arse later on.
Pitching depth is still an issue. Game 3 of the weekend series’ is always going to be a toss-up at best until Pfennigs is back.
Pitching depth is the biggest issue. Some guys at the back end are seeing action that they wouldn’t if not for injuries.
Have to win today. Can’t have bad losses. Seattle is not a good team.
Online says game has been postponed
That’s the first Seattle agme
whoops
Hunter to start, Fuchs moves down to #8 in the order.
This team is 3-3 over the last 6 games, as Bill said, “Have to win today…”

Boyd safe on that third steal attempt??
Yup, he’s on it!
Jaren clean through 5. 2 hits, 1K, 0 free bases and 70% strike outs on 45 tosses
So, of course, they take him out of the game on 45 pitches. I don’t get it. Especially when they’ve got a butt ton of games coming up and need to save the arms in the bull pen.
I stopped watching I think I’m bad luck. Everytime I watch they lose. Lol. I’ll just come here for updates that seems to work better.
I’m going to stop watching as well. Each time I tune in they begin to choke a lead. Compounded misery of being a Beaver fan. Can’t handle watching them if they are bad, and can’t enjoy watching them if they are good.
We’ll see it it works! Lol
Was there some story behind Joey Wong going to Seattle U?
Might’ve gotten a paid position. Don’t think he was on payroll at OSU. Perhaps I’m wrong though
Perhaps you’re Wong!
His SU bio says he’s a volunteer assistant. Don’t know if he finished his degree, maybe he’s working on it at SU or he or the wife got a better gig in Seattle that helps pay the bills.
Boyd on, 3-3 today with Melton up. Tie game
Beavs do damage. 6-3 good guys
6-3 Beavs heading into the eighth. Offense playing small ball tonight with just singles and walks.
Thanks to all who stopped watching
Don’t come back though. If angry tunes in Mitch will probably sub in Gretler to pitch the 9th.
Lol
Bazzana doubles, 8-3
Ring ring ring ring ring ring ring ring Bazzana phone!
I like it but a bit of a stretch lolol
Hats off to the O. Todays game preview “Here are details about tonight’s game: Oregon State Beavers (14-4) vs. Another College Mascot (6-10)”
I’m just happy the mid week pitching held the Mascots to 3 runs.
Jaren Hunter had an exceptional outing. He jumps to the front of the starter search today.
Against a shitty opponent and you’re ready to anoint him a starter?
You deep in the asshole bottle tonight? We are looking for a fourth starter to cover for Pfennings and the only guys who have shown the ability to do solid innings with quality so far are Hunter, Ferrer, and Townsend. No one else has had an outing over 3 innings and of those three Townsend has definitely been rough.
Hunter gave up 2 hits in 5 innings and no free bases.
Brown who has been one of our better relievers this year gave up 4 hits and 3 runs against the same dudes. That’s in 1.1 innings.
Verberg took 3.8 pitches per out, Hunter took 3.
Carpenter took 7 pitches per out.
I get they are different types of pitchers but Hunter had a great outing compared to the other 4 who have all been atleast middle of the pack in our bullpen this year. If you cut out the awful outing he had against GC hes pitched 10 innings giving up 7H, 5ER, 2BB, 8K. He averages 49 pitches per game with highs of 69 and 59. Outside of Ferrer he is the best candidate for the #4 spot and Sundays on the roster right now. Ferrer showed he can go the distance against ASU in game 3 but that was also his longest outing by 2 full innings with his average outing being 1.9 innings.
So yeah Hunter looks like the best candidate ya big whiskey soaked asshat.
Id prefer seeing Ferrer or Lattery as our closer as they are both very strong strike out pitchers with nasty stuff.
So quality of opponent had nothing do do with it?
Or you deep in the dipshit bottle tonight?
As I stated below, stats aren’t the be all end all.
The only part of your incoherent rambling that I agree with is Ben Ferrer should be the closer. Due to his stats no matter the opponent.
Plus I watched this dude last summer.
He’s legit.
Verburg can suck it.
Normally I don’t respond to your idiocy. Just stop. Not everything can be gleaned from stats alone.
Angry would agree.
Who’s a better candidate than Hunter for midweek?
Carpenter, Brown and Verberg all performed worse against the same competition, guess my rambling is incoherent when you can’t read in the first place. I also never claimed data is everything, it’s a component of analysis if you bother to use it.
Are you mad you that GWH had the oldest comment and you didn’t? Those napkins must have been strong last night. This teams legit, quit acting like a spoiled duck fan and just enjoy the season Whiskey.
angry would probably also disagree with your appeal to authority (or maybe not?)
Disapproves in public but gets some pep in his step the rest of the day? He’s only human, I think.
A solid win today with only a little scariness.
One third of the way into the season. Let’s check in with the stats and see if the team has any underlying faults that are being propped up by the offense. Doesn’t include today’s game.
Fielding % – #1 in the country. A little overrated but not as much as angry says it is. A team that makes all the routine plays is going to save a lot of runs.
Pitching –
Walks per 9 – #16 with only 3 per game. Much much better.
HBP – #267 out of 292 teams! Have only hit 13 batters this year.
Free bases are not being given up!
However there is a tradeoff,
Hits per 9 – #91 at 8.57 h/9. Last year was 7 hits per 9.
Runs allowed per game – 3.9 vs 4 per game last year.
So pitching has traded off walks for hits but it has made no significant difference in the runs allowed.
The biggest change so far for the team is the offense. Could they be better than the 2017 team or the 2018 team? The 2018 was probably the best offensive team in the history of the program and I don’t think there are that many 1st round picks on this year’s team.
So far the 2022 team is outpacing the 2018 team. But I think we know they will come down to a more realistic number the further into conference season they go.
Runs per game
2018 – 7.6
2022 – 9.8
OPS
2018 – .906
2022 – .963
They are also nearly even in walks + HBP to strikeouts.
It looks like the team is on solid footing on all fronts even with injuries. The team still has some upside left in it too. Pfennings coming back would be huge as weaker arms can slide out of the weekend series. Wheeler is another solid bat if he recovers. If Trosky can show he’s a better fielder than Dernedde, there could be a change there. Dernedde’s glove is keeping him in the lineup.
On offense, its several players that are carrying the team and the backups are performing well which makes them dangerous. If one guy has a bad game it doesn’t tank the team. Everyone is a tough out.
There’s not much to nitpick at. To be at this level with the pitching injuries is pretty good. The concerns would be if the guys can come back and contribute. Pitching depth is key for a long postseason run. I said before, if the starters don’t contribute a lot of innings, it could start a vicious cycle. This next week will be a good test of that depth.
You forgot something. Which matters in a close game.
Who is the closer?
Comparing stats isn’t the be all end all.
OT: Did a quick search on Brandin Cooks (one of my favorite Beaver players). He’s had two 1,000 yard seasons with Houston. While a 1,000 yard season is maybe not it once was given 16 and 17 game seasons, point is he’s working hard and producing for a franchise in disarray without a maquee QB. There’s trade speculation, either that he goes as a compliment to a team like Buffalo, or, that a rebuilding franchise needs a quality, character guy like him on the roster.
With KC trading Tyreek Hill to Miami, I think it’d be fun to see Cooks go to KC and be successful in that offense. He may not be as fast as Hill, but he’s got to be damn close, and in that scheme he’d put up some great numbers…
Note: Cooks has apparently had at least six 1,000 yard seasons with four different teams (NO, NE, LA Rams, Houston) and if traded again would be one of the most traded players in the league.
Thanks Obj… Cooks is one of my all-time favs too. Good read.
It’s really too bad for him he’s had so many concussions and bounced around like he has. His combination of speed, hands, shiftiness, and football smarts is rare. He could have had a HOF career.
Green Bay needs to get him!
Zona lost to New Mexico
https://mobile.twitter.com/KendallRogers/status/1506990139523977219?cxt=HHwWhsC-pYXj8-kpAAAA
Beavs rpi is lower than one would expect at #28. But it’s mostly due to not having played many true road games.
NB, has the coaching staff started following any new qbs lately? I feel like that’s the sign if they miss out on someone. I saw a qb from Texas State entered the portal. That seems more our flavor.
AB trivia
Here’s one for ya to consider while waiting for WBB at 7 tonight or baseball at 6 Friday:
What’s the significance to this blog of “The Partial Ingrediants” ?
WBB 78-73 over New Mexico. Play UCLA next
Came back from 18 down in 2nd qtr.
Hey, only 7 TO’s!
Getting deep into the tournament should be good for them.
They lost to UCLA 72-58 in January…
Better check again. Beav gals beat UCLA January 30th in Gill.
The players who spoke after the New Mexico win acknowledged that UCLA was short handed that afternoon. This Sunday’s game could be a lot closer.
Ahh, thanks for clarifying. I misread the schedule results obviously.
Davis in portal
Time for WT to go
Don’t blame him. Hopefully the mens team was there supporting the women’s team last night.
Losing Davis really hurts, I think. He would have been the Leader to build around.
Akin to being captain of the Titanic!
Agree. It will be harder to replicate another 3 win season next year without Davis.
So you’re think 2? or maybe 1? Hopefully we can at least hold on to the good freshman.
I hope women’s hoops keeps playing until all the open coaching gigs are filled.
Also – remember when the men’s job came down to Tinkle or Musselman?
I wanted Musselman. But would he have had similar success here given the lack of support from the athletic department? Sure Tinkle isn’t near the coach he is.
I do think Musselman would be better at getting better players from everywhere.
Musselman was successful at Nevada. Pretty sure he could have done well here.
I agree although much of his success was getting two highly rated transfers that were brothers and wanted to play somewhere together. Could
Happen for the Beavs. Just disappointing the athletic department doesn’t put more into sports compared to other pac 12 programs. I’d take a new coach tomorrow.
Musselman was on the Rome show today and descttribed some of his college job interviews – one AD in Florida (don’t think it was the Gators) fell asleep during his interview, other schools – like SJ State and Campbell wouldn’t even interview him (remember he is a former NBA coach) and he mentioned a “Pac-12 AD” who kept fiddling with his phone during the interview.
There are a lot of good basketball coaches out there who really don’t care where they coach – they just want a job and can make it work and get the players they need through contacts they have.
I’m hopeful Tinkle will bring in some A level recruiters – or someone who has a four-star or better son or two – to fill these positions.
Nepotism is not the long term solution to the MBB woes. If the last 6 years hasn’t taught us that, it may be a long lesson to repeat.
Beavs will always be a day late and a dollar short on coaching hires for most sports. The AD lacks a visionary approach and generally makes reactionary decisions.
Tinkle was a decent coach at Montana in the Big Sky with a small sample size, but he has been exposed as a poor developer, poor recruiter, poor in game manager, poor offensive strategist, poor talent assessment, doesn’t recognize the value of a true point guard;
On the flip side, he has been a good representative of the program, a recognizable figurehead for the program, a top shelf sweater, big time arm waver, unmatched at glaring at refs, and has been to the NCAA tournament 2 times in his tenure.
Barnes made the mistake of giving him a nice bump after each NCAA rather than seeing him as the first step back to respectability for the once great MBB program.
Parting ways with Tinkle wouldn’t be the worst thing to happen, although he has no cache for any other programs to come and poach him now. Barnes is the bigger problem.
OSU has an interim president. I don’t know the name or the person but it occurs to me that interim defines only placeholding. If OSU selects a president that does more than repeat “A-game” lines and realizes the importance of athletics, perhaps there will be hope.
Go back and read the tourney run, everyone wanted to extend him. I got downvoted to hell for calling him Mike Riley.
Last year’s NCAA was a fun run, but I was still skeptical of Tinkle’s coaching abilities. It is a common thread of OSU sports and a loser mentality/concept of fearing to lose what you have, even if it is less than stellar, because you aren’t certain that you could ever find something better. This mindset plagues a lot of decision makers at OSU.
Instead of giving every coach a 3 year extension once they finish a year above .500, or make a decent post-season (after a long absence), OSU needs to gain some confidence and let Stanford or some other school finally poach your tired retread of a coach while he is hot, and you get off the hook for that extra money, then go to work and actually find another guy who can do better, is hungry to succeed and is looking for a P5 shot to lead a program rebuild.
Tinkle is a tired retread of a coach and has run out of chances in my book, but Barnes is just as responsible for all of his mis-steps in overpaying and over-valuing these coaches that can’t break the .500 mark in career wins.
MBB fires Rupp & Thompson Sr.
Time to find some guys with highly rated sons!
Nice to let Thompson’s boys at least finish their careers and graduate before blaming him as the scapegoat for Tinkle’s failures.
Another fail by the AD and Tinkle still is a terrible coach at the helm. He can’t coach in game worth anything. I’ve never seen a coach who calls timeouts only to stop his own team’s momentum after big shots.
Tinkle has no point guard, no strategy, no continuity and plays the wrong guys most of the time in the wrong situations and out of position. Remind me why he is still head coach…
Money
Yes, money…a day late and always several million short to buyout the 6′ 11″ albatross.
Tinkle needs to go. Desperate move by a desperate man.
When asked, “Are you having a postseason conversation with Wayne about prior/upcoming year?”
Eggers responded “Stay tuned”
Will be interested to learn how that goes…..staying tuned!
Given their tenure – surprised Tinkle didn’t allow Rupp to “retire” and Thompson to “take a new role with the program.” Unless the point was that Tinkle had to dismiss both coaches on HIS terms to appease the AD and alums.
Watched some of the ISU game tonight – they kind of had the same deal – Big Year, extend the coach, then dumpster fire – but they ended up getting rid of the coach and made it to the 16 this year after an even worse season than the Beavs had this year.
I thought I read that Thompson Jr was given a “non-coaching” role in the program for what that’s worth.
I know I may be in the minority on this, but I am going to say I am not as upset as I thought I would be that we lost Davis. I mean, it’s great he was Pac-12 assists leader and all, but we won 3 games with him at point guard. Good point guards get you assists. Great point guards get you wins. He was lazy on defense at times and his hustle… was subpar. The reason Oregon State went to the Elite 8 last year was because everyone who hit the floor played like their fucking dignity was on the line. They played disrespected. They played excellent defense and hustled their asses off. It just feels like they brought in too many guys with baggage that were more concerned with being the guy than being a team. Their defense was horrendous. Oregon State needs to build their identity on the backs of guys like Taylor Jr. Someone who plays their fucking ass off to better the team. It’s Tinkle’s job to bring in the guys who are willing to do that. This year, he failed. I saw Oregon State has landed a handful of overlooked prep recruits for next year and that’s a good start. But if he can’t produce some wins next year. Let’s bring in the next guy.
Let’s be honest: they’re going to be terrible unless they get some major portal pickups
Tinkle threw his assistants under the bus, next year it will be his turn. Not sure why he was given an extension last season was a fluke. He can’t recruit.
Can one be overlooked in this day and age? And land at Oregon State? Questionable that Tinkle lands quality overlooked guys IMO. Outside the coaches’ kids and GP2 there hasn’t been much of that from what I’ve seen.
And remember GP-2 was a Craig Robinson recruit, he fell into Tinkle’s lap. To be fair, I guess Tinkle gets some credit for retaining GP-2, but he certainly did not recruit him. Given some of Tinkle’s transfers, he appears to be a suspect judge of talent, not to mention character.
Don’t know if any else saw it but I live TN and Kiffin threw out the first pitch tonight for Ole Miss vs UT and he threw a golf ball instead of a baseball. Amazing Troll job, Love it.
Lolol
Be a a lot of good pitching tonight. #1 and #2 strike out leaders in the PAC.
Boyd gets a 2 out single, guy is on a tear. T1
Anybody no how a guy without a Pac-12 Network account can watch the game?
Watch the live stream and cast to your TV.
St Peters to the elite 8
Gretler gives us the lead T3rd with a solo shot!
After 4 full, Hjerpe at 82 pitches and has given NO FREE BASES, one more inning?
3-2 good guys.
98 pitches. Not his best outing. It 0 freebies is essential.
Top of the order due up t7; feels like the time for the O to give Sebby a little breathing room.
4-3 Beavs
7-4 now with runners on the corners and 2 outs. Cals 3rd pitcher on. Gretler strikes out.
Brilliant mound visit by Dorman!
Helps Sebby recover from 2 ISP with only 1 out.
t8 7-3 Beavs
Not so brilliant move by Dorman; pulls Sebby in the b8 with two on/two out. With a 6 run lead not the move to make at this point, give him one more batter.
Good win, hjerpe with a short outing but the offense again produces more than enough to keep pitchers out of high stress situations. Interesting that Townsend made an appearance. Guess he’s out as the Sunday guy. Need him for the weekday games next week.
Good win. Always good to start the series with a W!
One of my friends knows family of someone close to the program. I finally got her to pry with Davis leaving. Turns out she said she was told Davis was known for refusing to run plays called, swore at coaches and got into actual fights w players during practice and even skipped workouts. Tinkle wouldn’t do anything. Ever. Wanted players to “step up” and handle things instead of him. Tre Williams was a total POS. Swore at coaches, also got into fights and we know he couldn’t shoot at all. Rand was another thug and like Williams and Davis, skipped team workouts and fought. Tinkle would just explain “can’t get the guys to come together.” I mean I tend to believe this since this was information that she asked for. Not someone bragging they had inside info for attention. Plus it does sort of explain how they were SO MUCH worse in one year.
Coach K would have ripped their asses and booted them to the bench off the team. Ofc he’s coach K and one of the greatest leaders in sports history. Tinkle is a weird NCAA tourny jeopardy question at best.
Heck even Craig Robinson would have probably cut them on the spot.
Tinkle is also a coward then. No excuse to lose the entire season to a couple of guys you took a chance on. If he didn’t want those guys to be disruptive, he needs to deal with it rather than putting that on the players. Why is he paid his salary if not to lead and give clear direction to the program, including owning his own recruiting mistakes once it is apparent to all in the locker-room. Instead, he waits for the players to deal with garbage all year as the train comes off the tracks, then throws out 2 of his assistants for cover.
Tinkle should do the program a favor and go GA, leave the buyout on the table and go back to Montana.
Thanks for the info on Davis. I guess it’s not surprising, and kind of sad to hear the amount of disarray internally for the team.
I think you worded that very accurately. You hit the nail on the head for sure. This is ultimately all on Tinkle. He allowed a terrible atmosphere to go untreated. Btw some of the guys sat out for so long at the end because they just didn’t want to play anymore. A few had legit conditions. But some just acted hurt since they didn’t care. That’s how far he lost the team.
Who was faking it??
Williams for sure and at least one other.
Meg Ryan
Sounds like WT effed up his jackpot recruiting window even more than we thought. Surely those guys didn’t just turn into problems once they made it to Corvallis.
What’s interesting is Marlon Williams is the only assistant who appears to be keeping his job, and he seemed to be the main recruiter of transfers last year.
This begs the question: does WT just have low self-esteem and low confidence in the program? It sure seems like he’s never really aimed high with recruiting, HS or transfers.
This sounds highly questionable for any program in this day and age. Nonetheless it falls on the HC and they need to establish standards.
Townsend closing, surprisingly effective?
Regarding Big Tinks, we saw this before with the 5-27 season, but we all gave him a pass because of the Tres injury. A head coach is paid a lot of money to have a backup plan, obviously, he didn’t. We should have paid closer attention that this was going to happen again once all the coach’s sons were gone. Sounds like he’s getting another year to try to right the ship thanks to the extension, I just don’t want the media to praise him for some 14-17 “turnaround”. They seem to love him just like with Smilin’ Mike and are ready to make excuses for him.
for me tinkle gets a years pass, the elite 8, and pac tournament run was awesome, and not to be forgotten what he did at omaha in 18. #human shield
F those pigs fans
Tinkle has fielded the 2 worst teams in the last 15 years AFTER going to the NCAA tourney. He isn’t a builder, and has been quite lucky to accomplish those NCAA opportunities. On the whole of his tenure, he has become a recognizable face for the program but an easy out for most coaches in the conference. His career winning percentage at OSU is .438 after 8 years!!
I thought he would bring a lot of depth to the big guys and OSU would have a sound disciplined offense with fundamentals and shooters. All we’ve seen for the last 5-6 years has been coaches son’s ball hogging and chucking up 3 pointers out a 1-4 set at the end of shot clock. Ethan was masterful and it worked for a 3 week miracle run, but the rest of the tenure is now obscured because of it.
Tres/Stevie/Ethen were disastrous for team chemistry and it has been exposed, coaches won’t or can’t develop a tema oriented mindset because they have laid the foundation of a 2-tiered system already for the “stars” and the laborers.
Guys who ha ve transferred out of OSU are my bigger concern because they seemed to be the guys that outplayed or threatened the status quo of the 2 tier system:
Kendall Manuel – 3 pt shooter and defensive guard
JaQuori McGlaughlin- ball handler and scoring point guard
Alfred Hollins- athletic wing, defensive effort, could score from mid-range
Jack Wilson- 7′ post man with a lot of hype who never played
Warren Washington- Slender PF, with range and always hustled
Sean Miller Moore- Athletic wing, rebounder
Dareon Tucker- Post player
Tariq Silver- 3 pt shooter and defensive guard
Deshaun Davis- JC point guard/scoring guard
I’d like to see this roster against Tinkle’s guys and see how they fare. It looks like Tinkle brings in some guys to support “his guys” and doesn’t accept them if they begin to outhustle and outshine “his guys”. I’ll be forever skeptical of Tinkle as a salesman for any recruits he is bringing in because he chases off as many as he keeps.
His comments recently are all about returning to the status quo of OSU basketball and high character guys…blah blah blah. Well who identified the “low character guys” that got us to this point? And who is going to now tell those low character guys to hit the road? And who takes responsibility for not benchiung the low character guys throughout the season if they were the problem? It would have been better to cut 7 guys and have an all campus tryout for walk-ons to fill the roster and still go 3-28 with effort and context than to produce the charade of what just happened.
So Tinkle has had two seasons with a combined 8-55 record……47 games under .500!!!! Is there another D-1 coach who has produced those kind of results in recent NCAA history? Only at OSU would a coach survive with that record. No wonder Beaver Nation has a self-esteem issue!
I saw tucker is on the portal again. Him and silver didn’t do much this year and transferred to smaller schools. Kinda makes you wonder if they regret leaving.
Silver averaged 10 points a game for mid-major Austin Peay this season, looks like he at least received consistent playing time. Only shot 37% from the field though. I doubt he regrets leaving Tinks and his WTF pattern of substitutions.
It is odd – that between COVID and the gradual decline of interest in the program by the mediocrity is probably the thing that makes the Tinkle situation palatable for the administration. Men’s hoops hasn’t been a hot ticket for a long time – except when Oregon fans buy a bunch once a season. So the empty seats have kind of become accepted rather than a problem.
Speaking of pitching, this video of Randy Johnson hitting a bird on a pitch is looney tunes funny:
https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/2022/03/24/randy-johnson-hit-bird-baseball/7154161001/
Steven Kwan having a good spring. Has a decent shot to make the opening day roster. If not, he’ll certainly make his big league debut this year.
Guerra returns to 3b today; guess Gretler’s 2 hits (1 a HR) yesterday were outweighed by the 3 K’s.
Or, maybe that foul off the ankle has him slowed.
Gret has a minor injury
Oof. 2 errors by Guerra allows at least 1 to score.
Rough inning for Guerra. Throwing error allows for a runner to 2nd. Error on the grounder with next batter allows the first runner to score. Then he follows that up with an ugly at bat. Strikes out on a ball that nearly hit him in the shoulder. Might not be bad to put Dukart in.
Elvis struck out swinging, WTF?
Feel bad for Kmatz. Has been really, really good thru 4. No help offensively. Guerra has been replaced by Trosky at 3rd. Wonder if Dukart is hurt as well? Trosky pretty highly rated but feels like subbing 1 freshman for another if Dukart is healthy seems more like a mid-week series move vs game 2 in Pac 12 play.
Jesus. 3 errors today. Forrester with a terrible throw ranging to his right. Too bad a really good game by Kmatz being wasted with atrocious fielding. Still plenty of game left but has the feel of nothing going right today. 6 error all year and now 3 in 1 game. Wow. Grand slam right as I’m typing this. 5-0 Cal. Game over.
Minor in the total scheme, but Logan made his worst throw of the season on Lomavita’s steal. Maybe, just maybe a general lack of focus today? We’ll see.
Game over?………..not so fast, my friend.
I’d love to be wrong but team doesn’t seem in it mentally today. Still some time obviously. Just has that feeling is all
B8: Melton falls to give up a triple! You called it, game over awhile back.
4 errors. 3rd base again. Pretty sharply hit ball but he was in position. Still a few innings to double our season total in errors in 1 game. Kmatz only gave up 4 hits…unfortunate 1 was a grand slam.
Turd game
6-1 cal going into the bottom of 8th. Been a pretty ugly game for the Beavs. Cal has played really well defensively and should give some tips to the Beavs. Unfortunately we have not looked like a top 5 fielding team today. Wow. Now Melton misplays, slips on a hit to center and they give Cal a triple.
Baseball is ridiculous. 7-4 with bases loaded and Meckler up. Aslong as he avoids a double Melton will get a shot too.
7-6 on Cal error
7-7 on wild pitch. New ballgame!
Al with an error 6-7 beavs 1 out with 2 on for….ducking Melton lol
Can we go to extras? Cal imploding there.
Nope, total random Cal scrub with the walk-off HR. 8-7 bad guys.
Carpenter definitely should not be closing. 2 pitches and he gives up a bottom of the order homer. What.
Coaches definitely need rethink who to use as a closer, as so far this season they are 0-4 in closing out 1 run games or ties. Closers have given up 2 go ahead home runs in those games. Got to be someone better than that on the pitching staff.
Mitch bein’ Mitch…
Dorman.
What exactly did Mitch do?
Good question, I thought he showed some appropriate emotion on a couple calls. Understand he chewed a little ass in the post game meeting on the field. Good to see him go with his gut rather than only analytics.
Of course, I always liked it when Pat lit into the dudes in blue.
Let’s see, Canham subbed out the guy who made two errors in one inning that cost the team a run. Trosky, who came in, hit an RBI double. Trosky did have an error but it led to no runs.
Disastrous
They didn’t deserve to win with all the errors. Cal nearly gifted them the game but the baseball gods stopped that.
Well, those errors did answer angry’s question from the start of this thread!
“Is there any reason, other than Mitch ;), we shouldn’t win the next four games?”
The Mitch thing is getting played out. He’s not making obvious coaching errors and pitching decisions have been fine this year. You could complain about pulling a pitcher that’s doing well for another reliever closer but frankly none of us have enough info on our pitchers to judge that effectively.
Most our losses have been cause the players didn’t perform. That’s baseball.
I feel like the team is playing exactly how we expect them to. We know now the offense is good. Pitching depth is suspect. We should be good enough to expect 2/3 every weekend. That should be good enough to get us into the tournament. Anything above a .600ish win percentage in conference would exceed expectations.
There is only one person driving the Mitch narrative
Angry should ban the troll who is the culprit.
OT: utah got a 2023 commitment from 4* QB Mack Howard out of Mississippi. They seem to be taking advantage of their bowl season.
It’s frustrating they’re in the PAC 10 years(?) and get to Rose Bowl before the Beavers…
Guerra returns as DH. A smart move by Mitch to keep the youngster engaged?…..I think so.
Tanner Smith to C, not sure about that one.
Ferrer gets the start, could be a very good pick based on season to date.
WBB starts same time as baseball, livestreamed by the school with baseball on PAC12-Oregon
Any updates to Wheeler or Pfennings? Need the pitching help more than Wheeler returning but I thought both injuries were minor and a couple weeks for recovery. Pfennings has been out a month with a back strain right?
Hopes for a return by Pfennings for the Stanford series are fading, based on radio comment yesterday. How many time have we heard “couple weeks”.

2 weeks 2 weeks you sound like a parakeet haha
Yeah, that’s my concern. Seems like there’s more to it. I get they keep stuff vague for all sorts of reasons but now I’m almost resigned to season ending or extended period of time with any injury. “He’ll be fine. Just a small papercut”. 2 months later has surgery.
Boyd leg double, bad throw on steal to 3rd, scores! That is what Mitch touted pre season.
It’s all Mitch’s fault. Melton puts pressure on the D, worth 180 feet!
t5 4-1 on a WP with Melton on 3rd.
Missed catch by Melton bites team in the ass.
wbb loses to ucla 74-66
softball loses to stanford 1-0
Nice series win by softball over a ranked opponent though.
I thought the bullpen was supposed to be a strong point? I know starting pitching injuries deplete the bullpen some but it’s been rough from the 5th inning or so on.
Too bad, I read after UCLA, there were no P5 teams left. OSU WBB apparently had the 14th toughest schedule in the country and toughest of the WNIT.
A win over UCLA today wouldn’t have guaranteed tournament victory, but they would have been well positioned. Today’s loss to UCLA may have been something of a de facto WNIT championship.
Slow starts vs hot shooting teams have made this team nerve wracking to watch.
How about UCLA’s Charisma? Heck of a player and she has her pic in the dictionary…under “How to Flop”.
I don’t feel safe with a 5 run lead in the 9th. Need this W
They did it. Series win. Yeesh. We need to score a ton of runs to win this season it looks like.
Washburn transferred so he could be a starter and then ended up in the same role he was projected to have here. He’d be our Saturday guy now and help a lot with our pitching questions.
Flummoxed by both him and Claunch leaving for worse situations.
BBQ fans?
Dont know if anyone has mentioned this but the Beav wrestlers finished 12th at the NCAA tourney. 4 of them earned All-America honors with Grant Willets taking 4th at 141 . They still have a ways to go but they are on the way back after some down years. Hiring Chris Pendleton as head coach was the right move.
Kind of a brutal series even with the two wins. Five games this week. Wonder how canham will piece together the pitching staff. Need some heroic outings from the weekday starters.
And some solid D, along with no let down from the offense.
Any idea how the Nevada pitching staff measures up?
They have some pretty bad numbers but they will be playing at home where they have a much better record. Beavs with a short staff will need the offense to carry them through these games.
Best ERA for a guy over 3 innings is 3.57.
Hitting looks pretty good but who knows the quality of those pitchers. 50 SOS and 57 RPI
https://www.kerryeggers.com/stories/wayne-tinkle-after-season-to-forget-were-going-to-try-to-fix-it-now
Tinkle sounds like a typical politician.
Eggers is giving him a pass again and even says Tinkle is a great person.
So barring an impact transfer, which could realistically happen just based on the promise of immediate playing time, our starting lineup looks like:
Akanno
Johnson
Taylor
Bilodeau
Andela
Bench:
Rand
Rataj
Kass
Stevens
Marial(?)
The starters averaged 38 PPG last year, but over half those were in Washington HS ball, so really only 18 college points.
Is Lucas leaving? Not terrible if he does. I thought he was a junior.
Wouldn’t be surprised if everyone left. Pretty similar situation to uw last year. They had a pretty epic collapse for two straight years and then had around 8-9 transfers out. Couldn’t afford to fire Hopkins because they gave him a huge extension the year before. Came back this year with an ok record and saved himself for another year.
I agree, however recruiting to Washington is a huge difference compared to Corvallis. Washington has 4 and 5 star guys in their backyard.
I’m wondering if Lucas will be talked into staying once some of the attitude issues leave. He might be included in that though.
Reading between the lines, it sounded like Lucas and Calloo tried to be leaders, but the rest of the team didn’t take to it.
Eggers said he thinks he’ll enter the portal
It would be huge if he stayed. He’s still a great shooter and capable defender. If you look at our projected starting lineup above, as of today our backcourt is VERY limited.
Even getting Hunt back, assuming he’s okay with a bench role, would be helpful.
Tinkle is facing a 2-3 year dumpster fire and a few cast off transfers won’t get it done. He has his work cut out and no more sons to bail him out…
“…3 year extension until 2026-2027” Yikes- Barnes should be questioned on that decision as well.
This is basketball. “A few cast off transfers” can absolutely transform a program in one year. There were at least a few programs in the tourney for whom that was the case.
The question is whether WT can evaluate and recruit talent well enough to find the right guys. There’s absolutely no indication that’s the case.
The guys in the tourney were recruited transfers that everyone wanted, and those guys can turn around a program. But Tinks isn’t ever going to land those guys. GP2 was the last of those types OSU will get, and he wasn’t going D1 program to D1 program.
The guys that Tinkle identifies are the guys at the end of the list. ‘…a few cast off transfers’ was my phrase regarding Tinkle’s program. At this point, he is left choosing among flawed (lacking a well rounded game), selfish guys, and selling playing time/stardom rather than team.
If the portal is a basic numbers game of more players than spots available, you eventually get to the guys who have limited options and they decide to come to OSU. At that point, Tinkle is desperate to make some kind of splash to have a media buzz, so he takes a flyer on athletic me-first guys, presents them as team guys, and then is shocked that the team chemistry didn’t materialize. Tinkle seems to make a repeating mistake of bringing in guys who need developed but he hasn’t shown he ruins a program that can develop players. Drew Eubanks had less court savvy after 2 years than when he arrived, and never developed a post game. How many wing players have come and gone without any marked improvement in their game? For the last 6 years, the main goal seemed to center around getting Tres/Stevie/Ethan shots at NBA tryouts, but I may be too skeptical.
“Drew Eubanks had less court savvy after 2 years than when he arrived and never developed a post game.” Amen to that. Does Tinkle have total control over the choice of the two new coaches? I fear that.
Been on the road and mostly offline the last 10 days. Anything newsworthy I missed in football/spring practice updates?
Cricket’s
They didn’t practice the last two weeks for finals week and spring break
New thread up.
